Garment bags are designed to keep your clothing crease-free and perfectly organized every time you travel.

Whether you’re going away on business, traveling somewhere fancy, or like to always go out in style, invest in one of these useful bags to keep your clothes fresh and wrinkle-free every time.

If you want your clothing to be ship-shape and ready to wear when you reach your destination, the very best way is to invest in a dedicated garment carrier.

A perfect garment bag will bridge the gap between a suitcase and a suit protector by offering useful pockets, compartments, and storage spaces that are designed to hold every bit of clothing safely and securely while you’re in transit.

Garment bags offer many benefits over and above a regular duffel bag or suitcase. With a garment bag, you can:

  • Hang your garments upright. Keep your clothes crease-free by hanging them in the car, on the bus, on the train, and in the hotel when you get there. The only place you can’t hang them up is on the plane. But, there’s a solution for that, too — merely lie them flat to keep your clothes wrinkle-free and ready to go.
  • Choose from a variety of transport options. You can have a rolling garment bag, a shoulder garment bag, or a garment duffel bag, depending on your needs and carrying preference when in transit. There are lots of different garment bags to choose from. There’s no “one size fits all” solution when it comes to carrying your clothing, as every traveler will have different-sized clothing to accommodate.
  • Fit in the overhead . Most garment bags are designed to be used as carry-on luggage and will meet airline regulations when rolled or folded. No checked luggage means faster boarding and no luggage carousels.

Before you rush out a buy a garment bag to keep your gear safe in transit, consider the following:

Size and Capacity

Modoker bags

Deciding whether you want to check your garment bag or not will dictate the size of the bag that works best for you. For carry-on bags , the maximum measurements will usually be around 22 x 14 x 9 inches — so be sure to consider that before you buy.

When it comes to capacity, some bags will offer lots of room for added extras like shoes, wash bags, and casual clothing, while others will be designed to keep your suit crease-free and ready for the boardroom.

You may also want to consider the length of the carrier. If you’re packing a ball gown, wedding dress, or another type of fancy outfit, you’ll want to look for one that can fit full-length items without squishing them.

Compartments and Organization

Modoker shoe compartment

While your clothes will be kept neatly arranged and hanging nicely, you should also consider what extra storage spaces you’ll need to carry all your belongings.

From basic suit covers, right through to collapsible wardrobe bags, there will be the right type of interior organization for you.

Dedicated spaces for shoes, ties, and underwear, for example, are useful for business travelers, while zippered compartments for smaller items, wet compartments for toiletries, and even external compartments that take the place of your handbag can be useful depending on your individual needs and preferences.

Material and Durability

Modoker materials

As with any luggage, you want a garment bag that will be lightweight enough to carry with you, yet strong enough to not rip or tear at the first sign of travel fatigue. These bags are also designed to fold, so the fabric will need to be flexible, yet strong enough to keep your clothing secure.

Most garment bags are made from the same type of tough nylon or synthetic material that laptop bags and travel duffels are made from, which may even offer some protection against wet weather. Be sure you know exactly what your garment bag can and can’t do before you buy it.

Wheels vs. No Wheels

Amazon Basics Luggage Wheels

Wheeled garment bags are easy to pull behind you through the never-ending maze of an airport concourse and are perfect for urban adventures and public transport. They’re not, however, quite so effective on rough terrain, unpaved roads, beaches, or open countryside.

Garment bags without wheels will need to be carried with a hand or shoulder strap, which can be tiresome over long distances. They are, however, usually a little lighter and easier to place in the overhead cabin.

Wheels or no wheels? It’s really up to you as there are pros and cons to both.

Modoker garment carrier

Simply put, there are 3 main types of garment bags to choose from. They include:

  • Bi-Fold Bags — This type of garment bag folds in the middle for compact carrying. When they fold up, the bottom will zip, tie, or attach to the top so it can be carried or hung as 1 piece. These types of garment carriers are the most commonly available and come in a variety of designs and materials to suit all budgets.
  • Tri-Fold Bags — Tri-fold bags are incredibly lightweight and so compact that they can be attached to the pullout handle of your suitcase. Typically small, this type of garment bag only holds enough to last you for a day or so, but they can be folded for transit and immediately hung up when you reach your destination.
  • Rolling Garment Bags — The clue is in the name with these types of bags, as not only do they fold, they also roll! With wheels and a handle, these bags are bigger and heavier than their bi- or tri-fold counterparts but can carry more for longer trips.

Handles and Zippers

Modoker handles

Whether you need a long handle to pull your bag behind you, oversized straps for carrying over your shoulder, or a grab handle for quick pick-ups; quality is key.

Sturdy metal handles, leather, or nylon straps, and durable designs are all vital to ensuring your handle stays intact as long as the bag is in use.

The same rules apply to zippers. You need high-quality zippers (and locks) that will keep your garments secure. Small zippers can break easily, so choose a garment bag with big, durable zippers and zipper pulls to keep your belongings safely tucked away.

Your garment bag has been designed to keep your clothing crease-free and perfectly organized in transit. If you aren’t going to pack it correctly, you may as well throw all your gear in a backpack and be done with it.

Follow these top tips for perfect packing, every time:

Pack It Flat

Garment Bags

Lay your garment bag out on a flat surface before you start to fill it. You could use your bed, your floor, or even your kitchen table — where you pack it isn’t important, but how you pack it is.

Work in Reverse

To ensure that your clothing is ready to wear the minute you reach your destination, pack it in the opposite order of how you would dress. For example, if you put your jacket on last, it should be the very first thing you pack. On top of your jacket, you’d pack your shirt, your pants, and so on.

Pack Facing the Back

Creases can happen, and to avoid them wrecking the look of your outfit, pack your clothing facing the back so that any creases only occur on the back of your clothing.

Follow the 1 to 6 Rule

This little rule is useful, and one used by professional packers all over the world. Pack the essentials in the following quantity: 1 hat, 2 pairs of shoes, 3 pairs of pants, 4 shirts, 5 pairs of socks, and 6 pairs of underwear. Scale this up or down to suit the length of your trip.

Tie it Down

If your garment bag has compression straps, use them to keep your clothing in place and laying flat while you travel. Don’t tighten these too much as this might create the creases you’re trying to avoid.

Pack Your Pockets Last

Modoker pockets

Those handy little pockets that are designed to hold ties, shoes, toiletries, and other accessories should be packed last after you have folded or rolled your garments.

Plus the stellar reputation that’s associated with the  Briggs and Riley  brand and its  lifetime warranty  means this luggage is incredibly durable and is worth your investment.

What we don’t  like

For one, the Briggs & Riley Baseline Essential Carry-on is definitely on the expensive side. And at 9.7 lbs, it’s also a little heavier than some of the other options out there. So if you’re looking for a lightweight and inexpensive option, this probably isn’t the best choice.

That said, this carry-on luggage for suits offers great value not only for its useful features but also for quality ensuring it will last even when used heavily over time.

Travelpro Platinum Elite Expandable Carry-On

Best Carry-on Luggage for Suits: Travelpro Platinum Elite Expandable Carry-On

For frequent  travelers , Travelpro’s  Platinum Elite Carry-On  is kind of a no-brainer when it comes to top-quality carry-on suitcases for suits. This beauty comes with a  suiter (although it’s not removable)  to keep your suits or dresses in pristine condition while you travel.

But that’s not all – the well-lined inner compartment has small interior pockets , a  TSA-compliant wet pocket  for toiletries, a  tie-down system , and an expansion system that provides up to  2 more inches  of extra packing space.

I also like that it’s made from tough nylon fabric  with duraguard coating and reinforced corners, which goes to show that this is a well-made bag you can rely on to survive many trips. What we also like

This 21” x 14” x 9” carry-on has a unique PowerScope extension handle that offers  adjustable height settings , spinner wheels that roll in multi directions and is backed by a  lifetime warranty . Plus this is another best carry-on luggage with a suit compartment that features a  built-in USB port  so that all your devices are always powered. What we don’t like

The biggest downside is that this bag can get  quite large once it’s expanded , and may end up exceeding the airline’s restrictions on size. Therefore, my advice would be to exercise caution and avoid overpacking, as it could result in your bag being checked at the gate.

Swissgear 6590 Garment Carry On Luggage

Best Carry-on Luggage for Suits: Swissgear 6590 Garment Carry On Luggage

Say goodbye to disheveled suits with the Swissgear 6590 Carry-On Garment Bag – the ultimate solution for stress-free packing and transportation of your precious wardrobe. Let’s start with its impressive organization.

This beast of a bag boasts a  tri-fold garment bag  and clothing hanger attachment points , keeping your suits wrinkle-free and looking sharp throughout your journey. And that’s not all – with compression straps, multiple pockets, and pouches for smaller items, you can pack all your essentials with ease and stay organized on the go.

What we also like The best part is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get your hands on this bag; even though it is made of polyester  (a fabric that is somewhat less resilient than nylon), it is still incredibly durable and costs significantly less than other options in this category.

What we don’t like

A complaint about this bag has to do with its delicate retractable handle. A customer expressed dissatisfaction, highlighting that the handle extension feels flimsy and does not function smoothly when extending or retracting.

While this might be tolerable for individuals who engage in occasional trips over short distances, it would be advisable to seek a sturdier alternative when considering international travel.

Travelpro Crew 11 22″ Expandable Rollaboard Suiter

Best Carry-on Luggage for Suits: Travelpro Crew 11 22

The Travelpro Crew Rollaboard Suiter has a built-in deluxe suit carrier  that keeps your suits and dresses wrinkle-free and looking their best during travel, making it one of the best carry-on luggage for suits.

This suitcase also features a roomy main compartment with dividers, adjustable tie-down straps, a built-in wet pocket, as well as external pockets to keep your items organized and within easy reach.

Plus, the  expandable zipper design  which allows you to add adds 2-inches of extra space means you can pack even more into this suitcase, while still staying within carry-on size requirements.

Compared to the Briggs and Riley Essential Luggage, The Crew 11 is  easier on the pocket  and also comes with a limited lifetime warranty. Also, I like that this suitcase features a dedicated pocket to hold your power bank as well as an  external USB port  so you can charge your electronic devices on the go.

Plus, the wheels are smooth rolling while the integrated top and side handles make it easy to lift onto overhead bins or into cars.

There are a few reviews on  Amazon  that suggest the Travelpro Crew 11 Luggage is not as sturdy as the original version. Based on this feedback, I would recommend buying from an authorized Travelpro dealer only. Authorized dealers typically have better customer service and are more likely to stand behind their products.

C38 Carry-On Luggage

Best Carry-on Luggage for Suits: Vocier C38 Carry-On Luggage

The Vocier C38 suitcase is another sophisticated rolling garment suitcase that can also be used as carry-on luggage on most airlines. It features an innovative zero-crease system that makes traveling with 2 suits or dresses much easier than ever before!

When unlocked, the bag opens in a way that allows it to be hung like a normal suit bag, making it easy to unpack as soon as you check into your room. And the best part is, this  suit compartment can be   removed  to make it lighter weight or allow more packing space on days you are not traveling with your suit!

I realize I’ve been harping on about the suiter, so my apologies for that. But here’s something else you’ll be happy to hear – this bag has ample space for all your travel essentials, including clothes, shoes, and even a  Dopp kit .

Furthermore, there is an easy-access pocket for your toiletries or other personal items you may need through security as well as additional areas inside where chargers or power banks can go.  Let’s just say this bag will help you to stay organized while on the go.

What we also like This C38 is also extremely well-made. It is made from a  water & abrasion-resistant nylon Hybrid shell  and features  YKK zippers  and Italian leather handles that add to its luxurious appeal. It also comes with a limited  lifetime warranty  so you can rest assured that your investment will last for years to come.

Plus, the C38 is all business when you need to get from point A to B courtesy of smooth rolling wheels with steal bearings that make it durable and easy to maneuver. Not to mention, this carry-on looks so good, that you’ll probably be tired of admiring glances and occasional compliments.

The Vocier C38 is one of the best carry-on luggage for suits with mostly positive reviews, but that is partly because it’s a relatively new product reviewed only on the manufacturer’s website. The major con I could point to perhaps is that it’s currently only available in Europe, and is quite pricey.

And when it comes to carrying it, you have the option to use the detachable  shoulder strap  or  roll it like a suitcase  – talk about versatility!

Some  reviewers  have noted that it may exceed some airline garment bag dimensions and since it has inline wheels , you can only pull the bag behind you, and not rotate, which can make maneuvering through tight spaces a bit of a challenge.

But with many positive reviews on  Amazon and an affordable price tag, I still think this rolling garment bag is a great choice for your next trip.

While it’s a pretty solid choice, a few customers on Amazon have reported some issues about the zippers on this wheeled bag breaking or not working properly. So, if you’re packing up some delicate items, you may want to give those zippers a little extra TLC to avoid any mishaps.

And if you’re someone who likes to bring their whole wardrobe on their travels, this rolling garment bag might be a tad on the small side for your needs. In her own words, she expressed, “ With all of my essentials packed inside, I assumed that the dress, essentially wrapped around my belongings, would end up wrinkled by the time I unpacked. However, I am delighted to report that my gown remained in pristine condition, just as it was before being placed inside the duffel .”

In addition to being cheap (less than $60), it is also incredibly light (only 2 lbs, can you believe it?). But that’s not all – this bag offers so many carrying options! You can easily grab it by the  sturdy handles , wear it on your shoulder or across your body with the  detachable shoulder strap , or even attach it to your suitcase with the  trolley sleeve . The choice is yours!

Ah, the fine print—well, let’s get into it! The shoe compartment in this garment bag, while beneficial, takes up room in the interior, so don’t go crazy with many outfits. And well, some customers have complained about the fabric and zipper quality . So that’s something to keep in mind.

Travelpro Crew VersaPack Weekender Carry-on Duffel Bag with Suiter

The bag has a  split case design that allows you to organize your belongings into two separate compartments, as well as several pockets which allow you to organize your items efficiently. There is a front pocket with a key leash, a magnetic pocket for your phone, an external water bottle pocket, and even a padded tablet pocket .

Also, the dual handles are great for carrying the bag short distances, while the removable,  adjustable shoulder strap  makes it easy to carry over your shoulder so your hand doesn’t get fatigued after hours on end carrying heavy items around town!

The main complaint I have seen about this VersaPack duffel is that it’s quite small. The size means that you can’t pack very much in it after your suits. It might not be a problem if you’re only planning on using it for day trips, but if you want to pack for a weekend getaway, you’ll probably need something bigger.

Indeed, over 3000 Amazon reviewers expressed their satisfaction with the bag’s capacity to accommodate two suits or dresses while ensuring that their clothing items remained in impeccable condition, completely free from wrinkles. The positive feedback from these reviewers underscores the bag’s ability to effectively preserve the pristine state of garments during travel.

It also satisfies the size specifications for carry-on luggage set forth by the majority of airlines and is made of water-resistant PU leather that is sturdy and easy to clean. And the bag has an  adjustable shoulder strap  that makes carrying it comfortable.

If you’re looking for a high-quality, dependable carry-on bag you can use frequently, the Seyfocnia Carry-on Bag won’t be your best choice. Although  affordable , the bag doesn’t seem to be made to withstand repeated usage, according to multiple reviews. If you want your bag to last longer, you might need to invest in a higher-quality model like the Briggs & Riley Baseline Suiter Duffle.

One of the best features of this particular bag is its ease of use. It can quickly and easily be transformed from a  duffle into a hanging garment bag,  making it perfect for business or leisure travel. And the suiter system included in the bag can carry up to 1-2 suits .

There is also plenty of space in the bag for your other personal items as well as a  side shoe pocket  so you can keep your kicks separate from your other items.

Its stylish design means it will look great no matter where you take it, and yes, that includes business trips. The dual handles are padded for added comfort and the  shoulder strap is adjustable  so that customize to fit. Plus when it comes down decision between fashion and function, Briggs & Riley has made sure this versatile travel companion meets all of my criteria (and then some).

Like most Briggs & Riley bags , the Suiter Duffle is expensive and so not for those on a budget. Also, some customers were not thrilled with the fact that the suit compartment doesn’t open fully so you have to slide your suit in, which may cause minor creases, especially for larger-sized suits.

With that being said, if you’re in the market for high-quality tri-fold garment bags, you can’t go wrong with the Briggs & Riley Suiter Carry-on Garment Bag.

Buyer’s Guide: how to choose the best carry-on luggage for suits

Best Carry-on Luggage for Suits: Vocier C38 Carry-On Luggage

The following are some important factors you must consider before making a decision while looking for the best carry-on luggage for suits.

Choose the right type of carry-on luggage for suits

Below, I’ll outline the top three types of suit carry-on luggage:

Carry-on suitcases with built-in suiter compartment

These bags often include a separate section for suits in addition to having plenty of space for other necessities. To keep your garment looking as beautiful as it can, some even include special features like hooks or pockets.

And because they have wheels and handles, they are extremely easy to move around crowded airports. Just make sure the carry-on you choose has a built-in suiter compartment and meets the size restrictions set forth by your airline.

Carry-On Garment Bags (Rolling & Non-rolling)

Some garment bags come with wheels, others do not.

If you’re someone who doesn’t want to lug around extra weight, then options with wheels are perfect for you! No more struggling to lug around heavy items – you just  gotta  roll and take the weight off your shoulders (literally!). Furthermore, they typically have a large carrying capacity with room for an extra pair of shoes, some extra clothing, and other items.

The travel garment bags without wheels, however, are more adaptable because they can be used both for daily use and airline travel. I should point out that while some garment bags are bigger and can contain more, others are solely intended to accommodate dresses or suits.

Carry-On Duffles with Suiter Compartments (Suiter Duffles)

Suiter duffles, a unique hybrid of a duffel bag and a suit bag are the final option. These bags feature a unique design that unfolds to fit your suit before zipping back together to change into a standard duffel bag.

They include a ton of storage and organizing compartments as well, so everything can be kept in its place. On days when you aren’t wearing a suit or a dress, you can even leave it behind because certain models like the  S.C Holdall  feature a detachable suiter carrier.

Pockets & Compartments

Aside from a designated suit compartment, having extra storage features and pockets for shoes, laptops, toiletries, and other accessories are important in the best carry-on luggage for suits. This will help to keep your clothes and belongings organized and easily accessible while you’re on the go.

Your bag should not exceed the common size limit for a carry-on, which is 22 x 14 x 9 inches.   Larger bags may be subject to additional fees, or they may be gate-checked and not allowed on the plane with you. It’s therefore important to check with your airline before packing your carry-on luggage, to avoid any surprises at the airport.

Material & durability

Durable and water-resistant luggage is important when you are traveling with suits because it will protect your items from getting wet or damaged. The best material to go for is  ballistic nylon  because it is durable, water-resistant, and flexible enough to fold.

You want a bag that will help keep your clothes wrinkle-free and safe from any unexpected spills or accidents while being durable enough to survive more than a few trips.

Handles and Zippers

Let’s talk about the unsung heroes of quality bags: handles and zippers. These little details can make a BIG difference when it comes to keeping your sharp suits and other important items safe and sound.

You know that sinking feeling when you’re fumbling with a cheap zipper and it suddenly gives out, spilling your suit and ties all over the airport floor? Yeah, we don’t want that.

That’s why you need zippers that can handle the weight of all your important items without breaking a sweat (or breaking, period). And then there’s the grab handle –  a total game-changer for gracefully maneuvering your bag in and out of overhead compartments and taxis with one hand like it’s no big deal. You know, looking sharp and confident,  James Bond , style.

Wheels vs. No Wheels

When it comes to the best carry-on luggage for suits, both wheels, and no wheels have their pros and cons. Wheeled suitcases are better when you have a lot of luggage to haul around because they distribute the weight evenly and are much easier to move. However, some people find that wheeled suitcases can be a bit cumbersome to navigate in tight spaces, or over uneven surfaces. Non-wheeled bags are generally lighter and easier to maneuver in small spaces but can be a pain to carry around for long distances. Other advantages of non-wheeled carry-on luggage for suits are that they take up less space and fit in the overhead compartment better. Ultimately, the decision between wheeled vs. non-wheeled luggage comes down to personal preference – just make sure you test out both options before making your final decision!

Can a suit bag be a carry-on?

Do airlines allow garment bags as a carry-on?  Yes, you can now bring your beloved suit or garment bag on your flight as a carry-on item ! But before you get too excited and start packing, it’s essential to know the airline’s size limitations. Most airlines have strict carry-on bag dimensions, usually hovering around 22 x 14 x 9 inches . As long as your suit bag falls within these size requirements, you’re all set to fly in ultimate style. However, before you start strutting your stuff down the aisle like a runway model, it’s always best to double-check the airline’s rules and regulations. After all, you don’t want to be caught with an oversized bag that won’t fit in the overhead bin.

Do airlines hang garment bags?

Well, here’s the scoop: generally, garment bags are considered carry-on items and can be stowed in the overhead bin. But if you’re flying business or first class, you may be lucky enough to have access to a special hanging storage area for your fancy schmancy garment bag. And if you’re worried about your wedding dress or other fancy outfit getting wrinkled or damaged, don’t hesitate to ask your friendly flight attendant if they can hang your garment bag for you.

What size garment bag can you carry-on?

Most airlines allow a maximum size of 22 x 14 x 9 inches for your garment bags. But here’s the thing: different airlines may have slightly different rules, so it’s always best to double-check before you start packing. The last thing you want is to arrive at the gate and be told that your beloved suit bag won’t fit in the overhead bin. If you’re looking to save some space, try finding a bag that can fold up or compress easily. That way, you can maximize the room in your overhead bin and avoid having to check your precious cargo. However, if your garment bag is on the larger or bulkier side, you may have to bite the bullet and check it in as luggage.

Where do you put a garment bag on a plane?

In most cases, garment bags can be rolled or folded up to fit comfortably in the overhead compartments on the plane. However, it’s important to double-check with your airline to make sure your bag’s dimensions meet their carry-on luggage size requirements. You definitely don’t want to risk having to check your precious garments at the last minute and risk them getting lost or damaged in the process. So, give your airline a quick call or check their website before you fly to ensure a smooth and wrinkle-free journey for your clothes.

Do garment bags prevent wrinkles?

Now, let’s be real – no garment bag can promise a completely wrinkle-free wardrobe. But what they can do is give your clothes the VIP treatment they deserve. How does this magic work, you ask? Well, garment bags are designed with dimensions and folding techniques that cater specifically to your precious threads. By giving your garments room to breathe and hang freely, they’re less likely to get squished and creased up like a paper ball. Plus, many garment bags come with extra features like padding, compression straps, and pockets to keep your clothes even more protected and organized. So, while garment bags may not be miracle workers, they’re definitely a smart investment for any traveler looking to keep their wardrobe looking sharp.

How do you carry a suit when traveling?

Final thoughts.

Phew! Thanks for sticking around and reading my post about the best carry-on luggage for suits. I hope you found it super helpful and feel ready to take on your next trip with confidence!

2 thoughts on “15 best carry-on luggage for suits (our top picks for crisp & wrinkle-free travel)”.

Thanks for this in-depth comparison of business travel bags. I know how annoying it can be when traveling on a business trip and your suit is smashed like some cow ate it and then spilled it out. I like the Briggs-Riley bag, but as you said it is on the expensive side. So, for people on a budget, the travel options seem to be more suitable. I am going in 30 days’ time to Mauritius, this will be leisure trip but soon I will need one suit luggage, then I’ll come again to your great post. Cheers

Thank you for such a terrific, exhaustive article Wole. You have really opened my eyes to the options available when in need of new luggage! I especially like how you have shown us the inner workings of so many of these rather than simply seeing the view of the baggage in the closed position. Seeing how folded clothes for instance, can fit alongside typically hung items like pressed shirts and sites was invaluable. I really like the versatility of the Travelpro Crew VersaPack Weekender as a carry-on seems to fit my needs best. Keep up the good work!

8 best garment bags for reducing wrinkles, according to travel pros

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

Garment bags can take many forms, from shoulder-strapped to rolling to flat inserts — but regardless of the style, there's a few different reasons you might opt for a garment bag instead of a suitcase. They're ideal for keeping suits well-pressed and wrinkle-free in transit, and great for business trips where you might not need (or want) a full suitcase just for a couple days. And with all of the drama that comes with checked luggage getting lost, you might want one for special occasion dresses — like a wedding dress, a bridesmaid dress or a special uniform — so you can keep them near you instead of checking them.

If you're checking a larger bag, a garment bag that fits inside of your suitcase instead of a carry-on is an option if you already have something you'd like to bring on the plane. The Centerfold Garment Sleeve from Away is designed to fit into their Bigger Carry-On, but it would be a great addition to any suitcase. It clips inside of luggage and has tiered loops to accommodate multiple hangers . It can also be carried if you prefer to not fold it up. When you reach your destination, unzip the bottom to allow your garment to fully hang instead of staying bunched up at the base. There's only two zippered pockets for accessories or other small items. The nylon is water-resistant, but not fully waterproof.

About the size of a briefcase, this compact garment bag has a strap across the back of the bag that you can slide over your suitcase handle so there's less for you to hold as you make your way around the airport. If you do choose to carry it, there's an adjustable shoulder strap as well. There's a front organizing pocket for easy access to smaller electronics like a phone and a tablet, making it a convenient carry-on bag . Unfolded, this water-resistant bag hangs at 47 inches, so it's too short for full-length dresses, but it's a great size for jackets, short dresses and dress shirts. The panel that flips out is also full of pockets for stashing jewelry, accessories, shoes and ties.

Long or voluminous formal dresses can be a real pain to travel with because they're so big and cumbersome. Not to mention, if you're traveling to an important event with a wedding or bridesmaid dress, you do not want to keep it in checked luggage, lest you be stuck in an airport — sans dress — at the customer service counter trying to track down your suitcase. For full-length dresses, you need a long garment bag to fit the entire garment without it bunching up and wrinkling at the bottom of the bag. This 72-inch-long garment bag has a 10-inch gusset so it can expand to accommodate styles with a particularly puffy lower half (like dresses designed with layers of tulle, crinoline or a train). Available in five different colors and patterns, the water-resistant polyethylene material will protect clothing from damage. Keep in mind that it is a pretty bare-bones garment bag, so there are no extra pockets or other bells and whistles like the other bags on our list.

Calpak finds a nice balance between functionality and fashion with unique styles that are well-made with plenty of features. The Compakt Large Garment Bag can either be carried on its own or it can be placed inside luggage and unpacked upon arrival. Made of water-resistant ripstop nylon, it's 48 inches long when unfolded, so it's a great size for short dresses , and there are seven pockets that fit two pairs of shoes and other accessories. Long dresses will hang out the bottom of the bag, but once the bag is folded up it will cover the hem. The Calpak garment bag comes six fashionable colors and prints that are mostly the same across their product line, so you can coordinate your luggage and bags to match, too.

Hartmann is definitely on the expensive side, but their classic nylon tweed fabric never goes out of style, plus it's treated to be water- and stain-resistant. But what's really great is the Tweed Legend Voyager Spinner has four spinning wheels so you get the ease of a spinner suitcase with the function of a garment bag to make whizzing through the airport terminal a breeze. There are plenty of compartments to keep organized, along with two triangle-shaped pockets to utilize the space by the shoulders of the garments. Hartmann is a top performer in our tests and it even landed as "best for frequent fliers" in our best luggage brands of 2023 . While we haven't tested this specific garment bag, we love their spacious interiors that are easy to pack and wheels that are smooth and comfortable to maneuver.

If you're looking for a no-frills, grab-and-go garment bag, this water-resistant Amazon Basics one is a great option. It comes with a shoulder strap for comfortable carrying and multiple pockets for shoes, undergarments and other items . There's also a front pocket for additional storage and a strap along the back for hooking on your luggage handle. In our testing, we've found the luggage from Amazon Basics to be easy to pack. While it might not be the best quality out there, you can't beat their price.

Briggs & Riley 22" Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag

Most wheeled garment bags unfold from the top or bottom, so you end up with luggage that's wider than it is tall, which can get weird when trying to shove in an overhead bin (especially for airlines that are strangely particular about how you put bags up there). Briggs & Riley's 22" Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag folds out from the side, so it's shaped like a regular suitcase — taller than it is wide . There are two sections, one for flat packing and one for hanging garments, with lots of little pockets in the unused space to make maximum use of the bag. While Briggs & Riley bags are pricey, they come with a lifetime guarantee that will cover all repairs if the luggage is broken or damaged. They have authorized repair centers to fix luggage, will repair or replace with the closest matching part and they even have DIY repair kits if you're feeling a little handy.

When you think "garment bag," the first thing that comes to mind probably isn't a compression cube, but this one from Eagle Creek is designed to compress your clothes to take up less space while keeping them looking sharp. The water-resistant polyester case comes with a folding board with printed instructions on how to fold dress shirts and slacks to fit into the bag and how to use it to reduce wrinkles . If you're using a duffle bag or a backpack, packing cubes keep all of your times organized, and with this one, now you can take your fancy threads in the duffle, too.

How we chose the best garment bags

line break

To get a sense of what makes a good garment bag, our Textiles Lab pros weighed in using their years of expertise in their field. We combed through online reviews of the most popular garment bags on the market, considering material, size, extra features, durability and ease of use to determine top picks. This list includes our experts' top-tested picks, as well as popular products with rave reviews from brands we trust.

Are garment bags worth it?

line break

Garment bags help keep your clothing pressed and wrinkle-free while traveling, so you can just take out and hang clothing once upon arrival. They're ideal for clothing you don't want to fold or roll into a suitcase, like a suit, dress shirts, dresses and skirts. Some are designed to be folded compactly and placed inside a suitcase, while others can be carried as luggage. Most bags will fold in half or thirds, but they are made with padded interior straps to keep clothes from shifting around in transit and prevent creases. Just be sure to lay garments completely flat before folding into a bag to help reduce wrinkles.

Garment bags can make a great carry-on when flying. However, it's important to note the garment bag's dimensions to ensure that it complies with the airline's listed size restrictions. If you're taking a short trip and you'll be bringing nice clothing, you can use a garment bag as a carry-on along with a small duffle as your personal item to save you the trouble of having to check a bag. Plus, anyone who's felt the pain of an airline losing a suitcase knows that when it comes to important items that can't be replaced— special clothing like a uniform, bridesmaid dress or wedding dress, for example — you might just want to go with a garment bag and carry that clothing with you at all times.

What to look for when shopping for garment bags

✔️ Size and shape: Garment bags are available in different lengths, so it's important to consider the linear dimension to ensure the garment bag is long enough to accommodate your clothing. Otherwise, if the garment bag's length is on the short side, the bottom of your garments may have to be folded or bunched at the base of the bag, which will increase the chance of wrinkling. Longer garment bags are great to hold formal dresses, jumpsuits or a full suit. For shorter clothing like tops, jackets and mini dresses, a smaller bag should work just fine.

✔️ Materials: Just like any travel bag, you want a style made of durable materials. If fabric denier is listed in the product description, the higher the denier, the thicker and stronger the fabric is. Nylon is known to be durable and water resistant while polyester is more affordable. Leather is a luxury pick that should last long term, but make sure to follow the care closely. Opt for water-resistant finishes too, especially when traveling with your favorite clothing items.

✔️ Features: To make the garment bag more comfortable to carry around, choose features like a padded shoulder strap, easy access handles and accessible front pockets to hold necessities. If you're considering taking a garment bag instead of a suitcase, make sure it has large enough pockets to hold any other items that you're packing (like shoes, accessories and undergarments).

Some trips, like business travel or destination weddings , require a more thoughtful packing strategy—and this is where the best garment bags come into play. You can't just toss an evening gown, bridesmaid dress , or suit in your carry-on and expect it to remain wrinkle-free. Plus you don't always have the space to pack a portable steamer —or the time to steam!—and not all hotels have an iron when you need one. Wrinkles aside, when packing speciality clothing items, you also want to limit the possibility of any liquids spilling in your suitcase and onto your clothes. A protective, high-quality garment bag you can trust to keep dresses and suits as stain- and crease-free as possible is a must-have for travelers headed to formal events.

There are plenty of options on the market, so to help narrow down a list of only the top-recommended garment bags, we asked our editors and frequent travelers for their personal picks. Whether you're headed to your best friend's beach wedding or prepping for your own honeymoon , these are the tried-and-true garment bags that will keep your favorite pieces of clothing wrinkle-free and in tip-top shape.

This gallery has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Samsonite Just Right garment carrier

Most functional bag

This is my personal favorite garment bag for vacations. When zipped and folded up like a briefcase, it looks pretty slim and feels lightweight. But don't be fooled—this thing is supremely functional. I can fit three formal dresses inside (a few more if they're lightweight summer dresses ) and all of my accessories for the trip. What I love most about this nylon bag from Samsonite is how many thoughtful pockets it has. Inside, you'll find a few small zippered pockets for jewelry and hair accessories, two spacious shoe compartments for a pair of sandals or heels , and a hook to keep clothing items secure. The outside looks so sleek and features a zippered exterior pocket, top handle, and a long, adjustable shoulder strap so it can be easily carried. I love how it keeps everything for formal occasions organized and all in one place. This would be an ideal option to put your formalwear in for a cruise, too.

Calpak Compakt large garment bag

Best for destination weddings

Several Condé Nast Traveler editors are big fans of Calpak luggage , and the brand's large garment bag's thoughtful features illustrate why: It's made of water-resistant nylon and is collapsible thanks to a tri-fold design, making it easy to pack right in your suitcase. Take it from a former bride herself— Traveler contributor Erika Owen used Calpak's large garment bag for her destination wedding in Iceland and swears by it. She says of the bag: “The pockets were so handy and allowed me to keep all of my tiny wedding essentials (hair pins, deodorant, jewelry) safe.” When you open up the garment bag, you'll find four mesh, zippered pockets for small essentials and two roomy pockets for shoes. There's also adjustable closure straps, an exterior pocket, and a top handle that makes it easy to hang on a closet or bathroom door. This one's perfect to keep everything you need for the big day all in one place and separate from the rest of what you packed.

Halfday The Garment Duffel

Best weekender bag

In theory, I love the idea of being someone who packs light, of exuding a vibe of low-maintenance ease. Plus, there's so much cool gear out there that speaks to that energy, like this hybrid garment-bag-duffel-bag by Halfday. It's a garment bag that removes the stress of folding clothes like suits and dresses, but offers the added functionality of transforming into a weekender and carrying all your other must-haves like a Dopp kit with all your skincare and, I guess, underwear. So I took the Halfday for a test drive on a weekend in the Bahamas, and I can confidently say that, though your mileage may vary, it's perfect for short trips. I was able to pack two suits, some shirts, a pair of jeans, and some, but not all, of my essentials; I still had to bring a carry-on suitcase onto the plane. (I also brought three pairs of shoes. I am not, it should be said, someone who packs light.) So if you don't need six outfit options for a two-night trip, this is a perfect fit for you on its own. As for me, give me a shout when they invent garment bags that turn into a trunk. — Matt Ortile , associate editor

Monos Garment Sleeve

Best to fit in a carry-on

Another favorite of mine comes from Monos, one of our editors' go-to brands for chic and durable luggage . I turn to this slim, lightweight garment sleeve when I'm limited on packing space in my suitcase but still want to keep a special dress or two protected. It holds three pieces of clothing and can be folded down into the shape of a briefcase to fit neatly in a carry-on. (I've put it inside my Monos carry-on and still had room to put more clothes on top.) This one feels well-made and does a great job of preventing creases and wrinkles while in transit. I'd recommend this option for business travelers, wedding guests, or anyone short on space. I like the Check-In option for a little more room, but it's available in a Carry-On version , too.

Away The Garment Bag

Best to attach to your suitcase

When we asked travel experts to share their favorite garment bag, the response we heard most often was Away's The Garment Bag. Lexie Alford , the youngest recorded person to travel to every country , has definitely picked up plenty of packing tips on her travels. She likes this garment bag from Away specifically because of how it can be easily strapped to her carry-on luggage . “Checking garment bags can be a pain at the airport, especially if you have expensive pieces,” she says. “It's great for peace of mind to keep them with you during long travel days.”

Fashion writer and Traveler contributor Samantha Crompton Merinder was a bride herself last year and also recommends this one. She says it fits three full-length dresses and that the exterior pockets kept her jewelry and accessories organized during transit. “It makes getting dressed virtually stress-free because your look is in one place upon arrival,” she says. Away's sleek garment bag is made of water-resistant material and features a convenient trolley sleeve.

Modoker convertible garment bag with shoulder strap

Best Amazon find

A duffel bag and garment bag all in one, this convertible bag from Amazon can be used for all sorts of trips. When you're not using it as a classic garment bag to keep dresses and suits wrinkle-free, it doubles as a regular, tear-resistant weekender bag with a side compartment to store shoes and adjustable shoulder strap that makes it easy to carry. LNA Clothing co-founder Lauren Alexander loves this one for special occasions. “This convertible garment bag can fit so much stuff and is super affordable,” she says. “I have yet to find a name brand that makes one as good as this.” This waterproof duffel has plenty of smart features, like a trolley sleeve, detachable shoulder strap, handle buckle, and several small pockets for jewelry or other accessories.

Dimensions : 37.5" x 20.8" x 45" Weight: 2.5 lbs.

Travelpro Platinum Elite carry-on rolling garment bag

Best rolling garment bag

It looks like a small carry-on, but it's actually a garment bag on wheels. Lara Kramer , Traveler's former global associate director of audience development, used this rolling garment carry-on for her honeymoon in Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro a few summers ago. While smaller than an average carry-on, Kramer told us it holds way more than you think. “I was able to pack a few nice dresses and my husband fit an entire suit, all of which remained wrinkle-free, which was a game changer,” she says. Kramer also loves that when you purchase this bag, it comes with a plan that covers the cost of repairs or damage from airlines for up to one year, including shipping costs. “Yes, this bag glides seamlessly through airports and is incredibly durable thanks to its nylon fabric with Duraguard coating, but the lay-flat garment bag design is the real gem of this carry-on," says Kramer.

Dimensions : 14" x 22" x 9.5" Weight: 9.9 lbs.

OOO Traveling garment bag

Best lightweight bag

Made of polyester, the OOO Traveling garment bag is super lightweight at just 0.8 ounces and has a full-length center zip closure that keeps your nicer items in pristine condition. Alison Bruhn , stylist and co-founder of The Style That Binds Us , likes that the garment bag can be folded inside a suitcase or folded in three sections and slipped over the retractable handle of your luggage. We also love the under-$70 price tag of this light-as-air bag.

Dimensions : 19" x 37.5" Weight: 0.8 oz.

Tumi garment cover

Best durable cover

If you're looking for a simple, no-frills garment bag that will last for years to come, look no further than Tumi's garment cover. This one checks all the boxes—it features a top carry handle, has a sturdy zip closure, and is long enough to fit a formal gown or men’s suit. Plus, this nylon garment cover is durable enough to reuse again and again. At just over one pound, this garment cover is lightweight and folds flat for easy packing.

Dimensions: 18" x 12.5" x 1" Weight: 1.1 lbs.

Best Carry-On Garment Bags for Wrinkle-Free Travel in 2023

Does this happen to you? No matter how carefully you fold and pack your clothes, they still come out of the suitcase looking less than presentable.

Top Product Overview

Best carry-on garment bags, travelpro crew versapack carry-on rolling garment bag.

Travelpro Crew Versapack Carry-on Rolling Garment Bag (Jet Black)

The “10” in this bag means it’s on its 10th version, which means there are many aspects and features of a carry-on garment bag that they’ve perfected.

The Travelpro Crew Garment Bag  is one of the most stable wheeled garment bags out there. And absolutely great for business trips!

Its Powerscope telescopic handle is designed for comfort and minimizes wobble while on the move. It also locks mid-way so business travelers of different heights can use this bag comfortably.

There are two leather handles for hauling the bag. The top handle is for carriage while the bottom handle is for pulling the bag from the overhead bin.

Much thought has also been put into the material. It is 100% nylon with a protective Dura guard coating for water resistance. The interior is treated with a waterproof coating to keep all your garments safe. It’s also treated with Duraflex technology, making the bag almost indestructible and impossible to break into.

There are two external pockets for small items or jackets and documents. The main compartment has a metal hanger clamp at the top, in between two removable mesh pockets for small items and accessories. There are adjustable hold-down clamps and a foam-padded roll bar to keep suits in place and wrinkle-free. An extension panel also folds out of the bag for longer garments.

The inside of the lid has organization pockets and a compression strap to keep clothes on that side from falling out.

You’ll definitely have no problem bringing this as a carry-on as the Travelpro Crew 10 is most commonly used by airline cabin crew, and for good reason. At 22 x 14 x 9 inches, it will fit most size limitations for carry-on luggage. The biggest drawback of this bag is the weight at 10 lbs. It’s a hefty number and can be limiting especially on budget airlines.

  • Bag of choice of cabin crew and frequent travelers
  • Excellent build, quality, and materials
  • Many organizational pockets
  • Heavy at 11.6 lbs, but the features may make up for it

Briggs & Riley Baseline Carry-On Upright Garment Bag

Briggs & Riley Baseline-Softside Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag, Black, One SIze

Most wheeled garment bags you will find are made with a horizontal build, which makes the Briggs & Riley garment bag  unusual. The upright build is extremely useful, however, when you’re rolling your bag through the plane aisles and avoid hitting the seats. This is, after all, a post about carry-on garment bags.

The aluminum telescopic handles are fixed outside of the bag so it doesn’t eat up packing space. The durable ballistic nylon case also protects your items even if your bag ends up being tossed around.

There are two compartments that both open clam-shell style.

The front compartment holds the suits and is a tri-fold garment bag. It has restraining side panels to keep your suit in place. It can fit up to two suits (or three for the ladies).

There is a wally clamp to hold your own wire hangers. There are two removable zipped mesh pockets in the corners, good for underwear, socks, and a belt.

The main compartment has space for other items and clothing. It can also be opened while in the upright position. Side gusset straps keep the front section from opening all the way and spilling your items. A pair of adjustable restraining panels with two small interior pockets built-in keep all your clothes from falling out if you open this compartment while the case is upright.

Half of the lid of this compartment features a zipped mesh pocket for soiled garments and the other half features two elastic top slip pockets for shoes.

If you still need more space, there are two more pockets on the outside of the bag. It also has a Smartlink  strap that you can attach  to another wheeled bag if needed.

  • Many compartments and pockets for organization
  • One of the more lightweight options
  • Upright orientation makes it easy to roll the bag through-plane aisles
  • Smartlink strap lets you manage more than one luggage
  • Lifetime Warranty
  • The upright position makes the spacing awkward with the garment bag. It takes a little bit of getting used to before you learn to maximize the space well.
  • Material: 100% Ballistic Nylon
  • Weight: 9 lbs / 4 kg
  • Dimensions: 21.9 x 13.9 x 9.25 inches

Samsonite Leverage LTE Garment Bag

Samsonite Leverage LTE Softside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Charcoal, Garment Bag

Samsonite is well-known for its durable and long-wearing luggage products, so this is one of the most popular wheeled garment bags on the market.

This Samsonite Garment Bag is 100% polyester for a water-resistant finish. It measures 11.8 x 22.5 x 22.2 inches, which is beyond the size restrictions of some airlines. However, most of the time I am sure you will at least get it in the overhead. And many reviewers have stated the bag will still fit in the overhead bins.

At 13.2 lbs, this is also one of the heavier wheeled garment bags online. With these dimensions, it can be a bit awkward. It’s too big for ultra-light business travelers and too small for heavy packers. However, for some, it might still be the perfect travel garment bag!

A full zippered panel opens up to reveal the main compartment of the bag. The top part holds a hanger hook. There are zippered mesh corner pockets on either side for smaller items or accessories. There is a handy shoe compartment below the suit and smaller interior pockets at the top for things like ties.

The second portion of the fold-out can also accommodate neatly folded shirts, to help you start fresh and fast when you arrive. And the 3-panel suiter in this bag is perfect for those who want to arrive wrinkle-free and start work in a flash.

Tech-wise, Samsonite has also included a dedicated USB port so you can charge on the go too. Handy if you ask me!

  • Durable and relatively lightweight
  • Water-resistant
  • Expandable case with spinner wheels
  • Has extender panel for longer clothing
  • Bump in the center limits packing space
  • Heavy compared to others in this review
  • Material: 100% Polyester
  • Weight:13.2 lbs / 5.9 kg
  • Dimensions: 11.8 x 22.5 x 22.2 inches

Zegur 40-inch 3 Suit Carry-On Travel Garment Bag

If you’re a heavy traveler, it’s always good to invest in a sturdy suit carry-on bag that will last for years. That doesn’t mean, however, those good products are always expensive.

The  Zegur Garment Bag  is a steal, especially for the quality and organization you get with just this one bag.

This is another sleek and slim design, this bag will fit in any overhead bin. Again, make sure to check your airline restrictions on size limitations as the dimensions of this bag is not standard for all. But, it weighs a mere.

The dual-fold bag has several internal zippers and pockets to keep everything organized. It maximizes storage capacity for the interior of the bag and expands storage options with a big external pocket big enough for folders and electronics.

A cloth panel fully unzips to reveal the garment compartment. It has a hook at the top for the hangers, with three dual-buckle straps to keep the garments in place and wrinkle-free. Because there are no thick materials for the interior, the bag is flexible enough to hold up to three suits.

If it doesn’t fit your travel needs, they offer a 100% money-back guarantee Even better is the bag is made of 1800D Polyester making it sturdy and waterproof.

This bag is very well thought out.

  • Waterproof, lightweight, and durable
  • 100% money-back guarantee
  • Awkward sizing that may not suit all airline regulations
  • Material: 1800D Polyester
  • Weight: 2 lbs / 0.91 kg
  • Dimensions: 23 x 22 x 4 inches

Delsey Paris Helium Garment Bag

DELSEY Paris Garment Lightweight Hanging Travel Bag, Black, 52 Inch

A non-wheeled option is great if you need to be careful of weight limits for carry-on baggage. And who better to make it than the famous French luggage brand – Delsey Paris!

This garment bag is sleek and streamlined and is easy to carry around for long periods of time. It may seem too slim at 52 x 22 x 3 inches, but it’s very well designed and still fits in all the clothes you need plus miscellaneous travel accessories .

Portability is one of the key advantages of this bag are the organizational features. The front of the bag has a zippered pocket for smaller and quick items. The main compartment for your garments features a hanger clamp and adjustable bar/compression straps to keep your suits in place.

The garment bag folds out via the snaps at the top, which keeps it all in place. The first thing you notice inside is various large zippered compartments to store your goodies. There’s also a removable, padded shoulder strap for hands-free travel.

The main issue with this bag is you won’t be able to complete your look because there are no spaces to keep your shoes. While it’s possible to fit those in, you’ll have to have your own pouch or carrier for it (or throw them in your other luggage).

However, ignoring that issue, this is the perfect lightweight garment bag for business travelers, or your friend’s next wedding!

  • Sleek and slim
  • Can be unrolled to a full-sized garment bag without unpacking
  • Well-designed and portable
  • No space for shoes
  • Unused space above the garment shoulders
  • Weight: 2.4 pounds / 1.1 kg
  • Dimensions: 52 x 22 x 3 inches

AmazonBasics Premium Garment Bag

Amazon Basics Premium Garment Bag, 21.1-Inch, Solid, Black

AmazonBasics is of course Amazon’s own brand that is aimed at providing quality at affordable prices. And this bi-fold garment travel bag doesn’t disappoint.

It has ample room for up to 3 suits, with tie-downs to help keep things in place while on the go. It also comes with roomy interior pockets for all those extras that you will want to bring along. Even enough room for shoes. And because the pockets are made from mesh, you won’t have to worry about letting your clothing breathe.

Amazon has also provided pockets for those smaller items, in case you don’t have another bag for them. So, things like pens, smaller electronics, etc are stowed safely while you are traveling, but are still relatively easy access.

And best of all, it comes with Amazon’s limited one-year warranty should anything go wrong.

In terms of carrying, it comes with a decent carry handle but lacks a shoulder strap which is handy if you have other luggage with you.

  • Budget-friendly open
  • Adequate room for multiple suits
  • Only really good for business travel with suits, so you will need another bag with this one
  • Lacks a shoulder strap
  • Weight: 2.8 lbs / 1.27 kg
  • Dimensions: 43 x 20 x 3 inches

Important Features Of a Carry-On Garment Bag

When choosing the best carry-on garment bag you need to keep in mind a few specific features. The following is a quick guide to help you pick the best option for you.

In general, garment bags are not meant to be carry-on. Make sure you pay extra attention to the size of your bag and the size restrictions of the airline. The most common size limit for a carry-on is 22 x 14 x 9 Inches, so this is a safe bet. Some airlines will allow a bigger bag by an inch or two, but if you tend to fly with different airlines, better stick to the general size.

Garment Bag Type

There are bi-folds, tri-folds, and wheeled bags. While all these garment bags mainly keep everything wrinkle-free, it’s still up to your personal preference.

Bi-Fold Garment Bags – As the name suggests, this kind of bag folds in two, right down the middle. This means fewer creases, while still saving space. However, it is a compromise, as they are usually longer than tri-folds. However, once you hang them at your destination, the folds usually reduce. Especially once you wear them.

Tri-Fold Garment Bags – These garment bags fold twice, into three, to save even more space. However, as mentioned above, this means you get one more major fold. Whether this is an issue for you or not, I can’t say. Just be aware of it.

Non-Wheel Garment Bags – The non-wheeled bags are usually handy if you don’t want to unpack and just hang the garment bag right away. They are also considerably lighter, which will come in handy especially on budget airlines.

Wheeled or Rolling Garment Bags – A wheeled garment bag will give you a bit more space and comfort since you don’t have to carry it around. But they may not always be the best carry-on luggage for suits.

What’s the best Carry On Garment Bag for you?

The best travel garment bag for you depends on where you usually go. A big differentiating factor for these bags is the size and weight measurements. It also depends on how many suits you’re supposed to carry.

Frequent flyers and international travelers will never go wrong with the  Travelpro Crew 11 Garment Bag . It’s beyond sturdy and secure. You can bring this as a carry-on or toss it in with checked luggage without a problem. It also has more than enough space for your suits or formal wear plus extra clothing that are not as sensitive.

  • Extension panel accommodates longer dresses and suit jackets. Metal hanger clamp helps secure hanging garments. SUPRA Zipper heads are engineered to resist damage from daily use and abuse.
  • Hold-down straps keep contents in place. Foam padded roll bar helps prevent wrinkling.

A great affordable purchase is the  Zegur Garment Bag . It’s a lesser-known brand but delivers the same quality and performance. It’s also one of the most lightweight bags, which will save you from paying excess baggage on budget airlines.

  • HYBRID SOFT-BODY GARMENT BAG WITH SEMIRIGID STRUCTURE PIPING: Zegur's over-shoulder clothing carrier offers stress-free protection for your business trip, wedding, or weekend getaway. • KEEP CLOTHES CLEAN AND UNWRINKLED: Our heavy-duty hang-up bag protects clothing items large and small. An interior dual buckle holds your garments in place and partners with our unique piped design, ensuring that items don’t crease or crumple during travel

For something in-between, the Riley Upright Garment Bag is an excellent choice. Rolling it between aisles will never be a problem. It has enough space for your suits and clothes for a quick business trip. It can also double as your general travel bag even without the suits and formal wear. The dimensions are also within the limits of most airlines around the world.

  • Upright Wheeled Garment bag: Offering the versatility of a packing case in this 2-in-1 wheeled, upright carry-on, featuring a garment section that holds 1-2 suits and a packing compartment ideal for clothing and accessories
  • Durable Construction: Made with ballistic nylon outer fabric that resists wear, moisture, dirt and abrasion. Outsider handle provides greater interior capacity and a flat interior surface for packing so clothing arrives wrinkle-free

Frequently Asked Questions

Do garment bags actually prevent wrinkles.

Of course, no bag can completely prevent wrinkles. However, a carry-on garment bag does a great job of reducing wrinkles by keeping things flat and reducing the number of folds in your clothes. Keep in mind, a Bi-fold will have one less fold than a tri-fold too.

You can also take a travel steamer with you if you really want to ensure wrinkle-free garments.

How Many Suits Fit In A Garment Bag?

This is very dependent on the size of the garment bag you buy and you should definitely read the specifications and reviews before you buy one. In general, smaller/slimmer bags only fit one size, while more sizeable bags can fit two or three. So, you have options, you just need to pick the right one for how many suits you plan on carrying.

Do Garment Bags Count As Carry On?

In almost all cases, garment bags are considered a carry-on by airlines. As such, be aware of your carry-on limits when you are taking one.

One way to avoid this issue is to squeeze it into your carry-on bag if possible. However, in many cases, this will defeat the purpose of a carry-on completely. In that case, if you want to keep your garment bag as a carry-on, you may have to check in something else

Where Do You Put a Garment Bag on a Plane?

Carry-on garment bags usually easily fit into the overhead bins of most planes. In the case of a smaller inter-city plane, you may want to check ahead of time with the airline. Some have specific hanging space in the front of the plane. However, often this is reserved for first-class or business class passengers.

Packing for a trip can be stressful, especially if you’re trying to fit everything you need into a carry-on bag. With increasingly strict airline baggage allowances and common occurrences of lost/mishandled checked bags, finding the right carry-on suitcase is key to avoiding expensive checked baggage fees and ensuring your stuff makes it to your destination.

No one understands this struggle more than the SmarterTravel team. As travel editors, we travel a lot (and are firm carry-on only flyers.) We tested and reviewed the top carry-on luggage over hundreds of trips to help you find one perfectly suited for all your travels.

The carry-on bags we reviewed underwent rigorous testing to see how they held up to the realities of travel. We evaluated important factors like size and weight, wheeled performance, ease of packing, durability, and special features. Our testing process included packing each bag to capacity, carrying it through airports, stowing it in overhead bins, and taking it on planes, trains, and automobiles during real-world trips.

Ranging in price from affordable to splurge-worthy, the best carry-on suitcases earned top marks across all our tests for their optimal size, seamless maneuverability, handy organization, stylish looks, and resilience.

From a lightweight hard-sided spinner that fits easily in tiny overheads to a large carry-on that expands for over-packers, these are our travel editors’ picks for the best carry-on suitcases of 2024.

Best Carry-On Suitcase Overall: Samsonite Outline Pro Carry-On Suitcase

Outline Pro Carry-On Spinner

The Samsonite Outline Pro Carry-On Suitcase was our favorite of all the carry-on suitcases we tested. This smart and sleek suitcase is made from a durable polypropylene shell that helps contribute to its light weight of 6.4 lbs. Smooth spinner wheels and an adjustable handle make this bag easy to wheel even when fully packed.

The interior is just as nice, lined with a fabric made from 100 percent plastic bottles. There’s also a multi-functional panel divider that can compress clothes to create more space while providing pockets for organization. One of the pockets is water-resistant, so you can use it to separate swimsuits or wet clothing on the journey home.

Our favorite feature of the Samsonite Outline Pro is the antimicrobial handle technology used on the trolley grip and side handles, which helps keep us healthy while traveling.

Dimensions: 15” x 10” x 23”

Weight: 6.4 lbs

Best Large Carry-On Suitcase: Roam Large Carry-On Suitcase

Roam Large Carry-On Suitcase

If you want to test the limits of an airline’s carry-on policy, we recommend the Roam Large Carry-On Suitcase as the best large carry-on suitcase. We’ve taken this suitcase on hundreds of flights and have only ever had to check it on very small puddle-jumper planes. This roomy carry-on can hold up to 42 liters, making it a great suitcase for chronic overpackers.

This suitcase comes with two compression boards, which can be used to divide the two halves of the suitcase and help you fit even more in. The boards have large pockets perfect for packing cords and other small items.

We also love that all Roam luggage can be customized to suit your style—you can choose the color of every part of this suitcase, right down to the wheels, to create a unique bag that definitely won’t get mixed up at baggage claim.

Dimensions:  9” x 16.25” x 22”

Weight: 7.7 lbs

Best Expandable Carry-On Suitcase: Delsey Rempart Carry-On Suitcase

Limited Edition Carry-On Expandable Spinner

An expandable suitcase is like having two bags in one—keep it small and compact for a short trip or open it up for a longer journey (or for the return trip when you buy lots of souvenirs to bring home). Delsey’s Rempart Carry-On Suitcase is our favorite expandable bag due to its patented Securitech Zipper that’s three times more resistant than a standard zipper (so you don’t have to worry about it ripping open, even when it’s expanded to its maximum capacity).

Other thoughtful features include an integrated TSA-combination lock, two packing compartments with compression straps, zippered pockets, and a lined divider. We also love that the interior lining can be removed and washed—an innovation you’ll appreciate if you’ve ever come home with a sandy suitcase after a beach trip.

Three carrying handles allow this bag to be carried in various ways. If you have other Delsey suitcases, the Rempart’s modular design allows it to stack on top for easy carrying and storage.

Dimensions: 13.75” x 10.25” x 21.75”

Weight: 6.7 lbs

Best Soft-Sided Carry-On Suitcase: Travelpro Maxlite 5

Travelpro Maxlite 5

The best soft-sided carry-on suitcase is also one of the lightest weight options on our list. The Travelpro Maxlite 5 lives up to its name, weighing just 5.4 lbs. This model is the brand’s latest and is a full half-pound lighter than the previous iteration, the Travelpro Maxlite 5.

The suitcase has a unique tapered design that helps prevent it from tipping over when upright (a common problem with soft-sided suitcases). It also has a solid bottom tray design that helps increase the bag’s durability. The Travelpro Maxlite 5 can expand to 2 inches to provide extra space when needed. The interior is lined with a waterproof protectant that helps keep the bag dry.

This suitcase comes with Travelpro’s limited lifetime warranty, which will cover the cost of repairs if it’s damaged for one year after purchase.

Dimensions: 23” x 14.5” x 9”

Weight: 5.4 lbs

Best Luggage Trackers

Best Small Carry-On Suitcase: Eagle Creek Gear Warrior XE 4-Wheel Carry-On Luggage

Eagle Creek Gear Warrior XE 4-Wheel Carry-On Luggage

We love the Eagle Creek Gear Warrior XE 4-Wheel Carry-On because it’s deceptively spacious for its small size and light weight. It even expands slightly to give you a little bit of extra space when you need it. We’ve packed for week-long trips with just this bag and had no issues fitting everything in. Despite the diminutive size, this suitcase is packed with organizational features, like an exterior laptop sleeve and interior zippered pockets.

Made from 100 percent recycled, water-resistant fabric, this carry-on-sized spinner bag is easy to wipe clean and great for rainy destinations.

The Warrior is equipped with heavy-duty wheels that allow you to roll this bag over rough terrain—a perfect pick for navigating the cobblestone streets of Europe.

Dimensions: 21.65” x 14” x 10”

Weight: 8 lbs 12 oz

The Best Hardsided Carry-On Suitcase: Away The Carry-On

Away The Carry-On

Away’s The Carry-On Suitcase has won many awards and is beloved by travelers, and for good reason—it’s smartly designed. The Carry-On is Away’s smallest suitcase and will fit in most overhead compartments and pass all but the strictest baggage sizers at the gate.

This durable carry-on suitcase is crafted from 100 percent polycarbonate for maximum impact resistance. It glides smoothly on premium 360-degree spinner wheels and features a telescoping trolley handle with two height settings for ergonomic maneuvering. The water-resistant shell safeguards your belongings, while convenient features like the TSA-approved lock, laundry bag, and color-matched luggage tag help streamline your packing routine.

Thoughtfully designed, the suitcase maximizes storage with a double-buckle compression pad and extensive interior organization like three mesh pockets and a handy hanging pocket. Reverse coil zippers grant easy access to the wide opening, and an underside grab handle aids lifting.

As a bonus, Away’s carry-on suitcase comes in a variety of beautiful colors, including glossy and matte options.

Dimensions: 21.7″ x 14.4″ x 9″

Weight: 7.5 lbs

The Best Luxury Carry-On Suitcase: Tumi Continental Dual Access 4-Wheeled Carry-On

Tumi Continental Dual Access 4-Wheeled Carry-On

The Tumi Continental Dual Access 4-Wheeled Carry-On is an organized packer’s dream. The design of this suitcase keeps suits, shoes, clothes, and toiletries neatly separated and wrinkle-free. Convenient amenities like the built-in USB port and built-in TSA lock maximize functionality.

This is a great suitcase choice for business travelers, as the interior features a removable garment sleeve and fiberglass rod that allows you to hang a suit or dress inside the case without getting crushed or wrinkled.

The Continental Dual Access features Tumi’s signature smooth-rolling wheels and a 3-stage telescoping handle for easy maneuverability. Protective features like molded bumpers and side panels guard against impacts, while built-in tracers and TSA-approved locks keep valuables secured. With options for top, side, or bottom access via well-designed zippers, this suitcase optimizes packing efficiency for several days of travel.

Dimensions: 22.0″ X 16.0″ X 9.0″

Weight: 11.1 lbs

The Best Carry-On Backpack: L.L. Bean Approach Travel Pack

L.L. Bean Approach Travel Pack

A carry-on doesn’t have to be limited to a suitcase. For the ultimate in mobility, opt for a backpack as your carry-on. You won’t have to worry about climbing stairs or pulling a bag over rough sidewalks, and a backpack can fit under your seat on a full plane when necessary, avoiding the dreaded gate-check.

Our favorite carry-on backpack is the L.L. Bean Approach Travel Pack . Use it on its own for a short trip, or combine it with a checked bag (put all the essentials in the backpack and carry it on the plane) for longer journeys.

The Approach Travel Pack opens flat and can be packed like a suitcase, unlike a traditional backpack where you’ll have to shove everything in through the top and dig through the entire bag to find something buried at the bottom.

Dimensions: 20” x 12.5” x 10”

Weight: 3.3 lbs

5 Simple Ways to Make Travel Easier in 2024

How We Tested These Carry-Ons

These are the carry-on suitcases that the SmarterTravel team uses on their own trips. We’ve taken them on countless flights, train trips, road trips, and cruises to find out the pros and cons of each bag.

When testing a carry-on, we consider the following factors:

  • Size and weight
  • Ease of transportation
  • Organizational features

We’ve tested out numerous suitcases that didn’t make the cut, which helped us narrow the list to the best carry-ons worth investing in.

What Size is a Carry-On Suitcase

The dimensions for a carry-on suitcase vary by airline and generally change depending on if it’s an international or domestic flight. For flights within the United States, the most common size limit for a carry-on suitcase is 22 inches long, 14 inches wide, and 9 inches high.

The international carry-on suitcase size limit is usually 21.7 inches by 15.7 inches wide by 9 inches high, but this will vary by airline.

Note that airline carry-on size limits include all aspects of the suitcase, including the handles and the wheels, so be sure to check the total dimensions of your bag and not just the interior measurements. If your suitcase meets the size limit but the wheels don’t, it will not pass the carry-on sizer test.

Always check with your airline for the correct carry-on size for your trip, as it can change by destination.

Is There a Weight Limit for Carry-Ons?

There usually isn’t a weight limit for carry-ons on domestic flights within the United States (unless you’re flying on a very small plane). However, you must be able to lift the suitcase into the overhead bin without assistance.

International flights are generally stricter with weight limits and will weigh your carry-on bag when you check-in. These weight restrictions vary quite a bit by airline but generally range from 15 to 35 lbs.

What Can’t You Pack in a Carry-On Suitcase?

Remember, carry-on suitcases are subject to stricter security restrictions than checked bags. You can’t pack these items in carry-on suitcases, but you can pack them in your checked luggage:

  • Liquids or gels bigger than 3.4 ounces
  • Sharp objects (including knives, hiking poles, and large scissors)
  • Certain sporting goods (such as baseball bats and hockey sticks)
  • Self-defense items (including pepper spray and brass knuckles)
  • Weapons (including firearms)

What our editors say:

I was extremely impressed from the moment I opened the box. It was nicely packaged in a blue ROAM-branded dust bag and the carry-on is beautifully constructed. It's made of high-quality materials, and I found the compression panels with mesh zippered compartments to be extremely useful for both maximizing space and keeping items in place while traveling. But what really sets this bag apart is how easy it is to maneuver when fully packed for a weeklong trip. It glides effortlessly over all types of terrain, even inlaid brick sidewalks! The customized color scheme (which is really easy to do) takes this carry-on to a new level. Plus, you can create a coordinating tote or backpack to match. – Rachael Hood, Senior Editor

Best Overall Runner-up: Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner in cream on a pathway outside.

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner in cream.

Price: $369.99 or less

Dimensions: 23 x 14.5 x 9.5 inches | Weight: 8.1 pounds Packing capacity: Up to 10 days; 45 liters | Color options: White, red, blue, green or gray Hard- or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Warranty: Limited lifetime

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner is a truly well-rounded carry-on with a plethora of unique features. USB A & C ports on the outside of the bag give easy access to charging. (A power bank is not included, though the bag does have a pocket for one inside the expansion zipper.) Self-aligning magnetic wheels – a reviewer-favorite feature – allow painless travel through the airport as well as on roads, sidewalks, uneven surfaces and more. A built-in TSA zipper lock offers ultimate protection for your possessions.

Even without the features listed above, this Travelpro spinner is, at its core, a high-quality piece. The hard outer shell is ultra-strong and 100% polycarbonate; aluminum corner guards further protect your belongings. The clamshell-style suitcase has two large interior compartments along with three extra pockets, one of which is water-resistant, and the expansion zipper allows for an extra 2 inches of packing room. Plus, this carry-on is made with genuine leather trim, so you can travel in style as well as comfort.

There are some amazing features on this carry-on, but my favorite is the wheels – as someone who typically prefers hands-free travel (primarily backpacks), I found that the way this suitcase easily glides around everywhere absolutely changed my mind about wheeled luggage. Just know that since this is one of the larger bags on this list, I would still check your airline's carry-on size requirements before traveling (though it's been tested for most major domestic airlines, and it fit perfectly on Delta). – Leilani Osmundson, Digital Producer

The Away The Carry-On in green.

Price: $275 or less

Dimensions: 21.7 x 14.4 x 9 inches | Weight: 7.5 pounds Packing capacity: Up to 5 days; 39.8 liters | Color options: Black, navy, blue gray or olive, plus 2 glossy options Hard- or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Warranty: Limited

In late 2023, Away launched a new iteration of The Carry-On that somehow made it even more efficient. The most notable new features are an additional underside grab handle, three extra interior compartments, and an enhanced compression system that upholds the bag's ability to accommodate nearly a week's worth of clothing. The bag's 360-degree wheels are also slimmer than those of its predecessor for improved maneuverability. While Away has long been known for its neutral colored matte options, glossy options of this bag are now available.

Samsonite SoLyte DLX Carry-On Spinner in blue in an alley.

Catriona Kendall | U.S. News

The Samsonite SoLyte DLX Carry-On Spinner in blue.

Price: $199.99 or less

Dimensions: 22 x 14 x 9.5 inches | Weight: 7.1 pounds Packing capacity: Up to 7 days; 32 liters | Color options: Black, gray, green, aqua blue or royal blue Hard- or soft-sided: Soft-sided | Warranty: 10-year limited

This classic soft-sided option from Samsonite offers everything you need for a smooth trip. There are three spacious pockets and a trolley strap on the outside so you can stack it on top of another rolling suitcase, as well as a USB port for charging your phone (though you'll have to purchase a battery separately).

Inside the suitcase, three more zippered pockets – including one for wet items – help you stay organized, while buckles keep the main compartment's tie-down straps out of your way while packing. This spinner can conveniently expand by 0.75 inches, but keep in mind if you're flying that overpacking may put it over your carry-on size allowance.

I've used other spinner suitcases in the past, but none of them glide as smoothly as this bag, with its 360-degree dual-spinner wheels. I also love the high-quality, lightweight material, but my favorite part is its organizational features – especially the WetPak pocket. I'd highly recommend the Samsonite SoLyte DLX for anyone who needs a trusty soft-sided carry-on for a flight; it definitely fits more than I thought it would. – Catriona Kendall, Associate Editor

July Carry On Light in black against a sunny window.

Price: $245 or less

Dimensions: 21.25 x 14.17 x 7.5 inches | Weight: 3.9 pounds Packing capacity: Up to 7 days; 32 liters | Color options: Beige, light green, dark green, lilac, charcoal or 3 others Hard- or soft-sided: Hard | Warranty: Lifetime with 100-day returns

Weighing just under 4 pounds, this bag is the lightest hard-sided carry-on we found on the market. It's constructed with an extremely durable German polycarbonate shell, and the interior has two mesh zippered compartments to keep your belongings from shifting. The inner nylon lining is also resistant to water and stains. To make the suitcase easy to maneuver, there's a top carry handle, a telescoping handle and dual-spinner wheels.

I was absolutely shocked by how light this suitcase is. While some lightweight designs can be extremely flimsy, this July carry-on is very durable and holds a good amount of clothing. With compression packing cubes I was able to pack enough clothing for a week. It was extremely easy to put in the plane's overhead compartment, and the wheels rolled very smoothly for my entire journey. The only thing I noticed is that since the bag is so lightweight, the trolley bag I had was making it want to topple. Next time, I'd use a smaller tote or a north-south design to avoid that issue. – Rachael Hood

The soft-sided top of the bag is made of water-resistant Base Camp material and nylon for extra durability. There are two zippered pockets on the outside to stash small items and a mesh pocket inside for some added organization.

I brought this duffel on a trip to New Zealand, and it held up very well. The Rolling Thunder had no issues after being checked on six different flights, and the flexibility of the style allowed me to easily store it out of the way in my campervan once I had unpacked. It's definitely a simpler style, but it does its job well. Be aware, though, that this wheeled style doesn't have straps that would allow you to carry it like a duffel; it can only be rolled. – Catriona Kendall

Organization is a breeze with a top zippered pocket – perfect for storing travel documents or a Cotopaxi hip pack – and a padded laptop sleeve on the outside. Internally, you'll find two mesh compartments, one large and one subdivided, that work great with Cotopaxi packing cubes . The backpack's straps can be tucked away for more streamlined travel, and the bag even comes with a rain cover (though the Allpa is already TPU-coated to be water-resistant).

Furthermore, Cotopaxi is dedicated to sustainability : 94% of Cotopaxi products contain repurposed, recycled or responsible materials. The vibrant, one-of-a-kind Del Dia Allpa backpacks , for example, use remnant fabric.

Besides being incredibly durable, I love how much this backpack can fit; my longest trip so far with only the Allpa 35L as my luggage has been a comfortable nine days, and that included packing bulky cold-weather gear. I just wish it had a water bottle pocket like the Allpa 42L does! – Leilani Osmundson

Solo New York Re:Serve Carry-On Spinner: While the Solo New York Re:Serve Carry-On Spinner is a solid (and sustainable) carry-on bag for less than $200, it doesn't offer quite enough space – especially for someone who may be traveling for longer.

Away The Aluminum Carry-On Bag: This is a well-built carry-on bag. The only downfall is that it's on the heavier side, weighing nearly 11 pounds. Away's Aluminum Carry-On is also more than twice the cost of the standard carry-on by Away, which works just as well.

Lipault Plume Cabin Size Spinner: This is a great soft-sided option if you're looking for a lightweight suitcase. Featuring a sleek nylon construction, a large front exterior pocket and internal zippered pockets, the Lipault Plume Cabin Size Spinner works well but isn't as lightweight as the July Carry-on Light.

Monos Carry-on Plus: It's a high-quality suitcase with a lot of internal details, but given its larger size this bag doesn't fit in the overhead compartment on multiple planes (especially regional jets). That said, if you're traveling domestically on larger planes, the Monos Carry-on Plus could be an option to consider. Or, the smaller standard Monos Carry-on could be a good option as well.

Pros and Cons of Hard-sided Luggage

Pros and cons of soft-sided luggage, frequently asked questions.

Aside from traditional rolling suitcases, the following items can be used as carry-on luggage provided they meet carry-on size limitations (which vary by airline) and fit in the overhead bin or fully under the seat (not sticking out) in front of you.

  • Duffel and weekender bags:  This includes weekenders and duffel bags with wheels . Just note that wheels are included in carry-on dimension restrictions.
  • Garment bags:  These are also considered carry-on baggage by most airlines. You can place your garment bag in the overhead bin, or in some cases, a small closet on the plane.
  • Pet carriers:  Some airlines consider pet carriers to be carry-on luggage. Check with your chosen airline when preparing for your trip with Fido.
  • Backpacks:  If your carry-on backpack fits under the seat, it will count toward your personal item allowance on most major airlines. This means you'll have the option to bring an additional bag for the overhead bin.
  • Diaper bags: If you're traveling with a baby, diaper bags and other baby travel gear generally don't count toward either allowance – meaning you can bring these items in addition to your carry-on bag and personal item.

Purses , briefcases and camera bags can be carried on the plane as well, but usually aren't considered carry-on bags and are instead labeled personal items. Underseater bags – often designed specifically to fit comfortably under a plane seat – are also ideal as a personal item.

Typically, travelers can bring one carry-on bag (for the overhead bin) and one personal item (for under the seat) on the plane, free of charge.

Carry-on luggage sizes can vary by airline. Several major U.S. carriers, such as American Airlines and United, impose a 22 x 14 x 9-inch rule. If you're buying new carry-on luggage, this is a good default size to choose – especially if you fly with a variety of airlines.

For international airlines, it's often 21.5 x 15.5 x 9 inches. To be sure about dimensions as well as any weight restrictions, see our guide to Carry-on Luggage Size & Weight by Airline . It usually doesn't matter how heavy your carry-on bag is, though some airlines do monitor the weight.

  • Hard-sided: The hard-sided July Carry On Light weighs less than 4 pounds, making it one of the most lightweight carry-on bags on the market. Other lightweight carry-on bags we recommend include the hard-sided Away The Carry-On (7.5 pounds) and the Amazon 20-Inch Hardside Spinner (7.3 pounds).
  • Soft-sided: If you're looking for a lightweight, soft-sided carry-on bag, consider the Lipault Plume Cabin Size Spinner (4.8 pounds) and the Samsonite SoLyte DLX Carry-On Spinner (7.1 pounds).

Hard-sided luggage is often heavier than soft-sided luggage – but only by a few pounds. If you're planning to purchase a hard-sided carry-on bag, look for something that's made of polycarbonate or polypropylene, both of which are lightweight yet durable materials.

How We Tested

Our team tested 26 carry-on bags across several price points and on a variety of trips spanning overseas flights, weekend getaways, overnight trips and more. How To Pack A Suit In A Carry-On

T here's no denying that travel has gotten a little more unpredictable. There has a been a substantial increase in flight delays and cancellations, unruly passengers, and damaged or lost luggage . When traveling, there are fewer things more stressful than arriving to your destination only to realize your luggage did not make it with you. Because of this, many travelers have opted to go for a carry-on only. But what does this mean for travelers who only want to bring a carry-on but have a bulky, wrinkle-prone item to pack, like a suit? Can a suit be packed into a carry-on bag without ruining it?

There are many tips and tricks to fit a suit in a carry-on without it getting wrinkled or taking up too much space. If you need to bring a suit, whether it be for a destination wedding or a night out on the town at a Michelin-star restaurant, read on to see how you can do so without having to check a bag.

Read more: 10 Items Better To Buy Than Pack

Different Ways To Pack Your Suit

There are a few steps you can take to successfully pack a suit in your carry-on. First, the way you pack your suit can make all the difference. Instead of just throwing it in the bag, try folding it inside out. To do this, simply pop the shoulders inside out so the lining of the inner suit is on the outside. From there, fold it the way you typically would. This will help prevent wrinkles.Another option is to roll your suit. This is a common packing method when you need to save space, and it can work just as well for suits as it can for other clothing items. Simply roll your suit as tightly as possible to avoid taking up too much space.

One of the best packing hacks out there is using compression bags. Compression bags act as vacuums that allow travelers to pack big, bulky items while taking up minimal space. This is a great option for packing a suit to save space, but note, the use of compression bags does not prevent wrinkles. If you are to take this route, make sure you have strategies to unwrinkle your suit when you arrive (like using a steamer or an iron).

Alternative Options To Pack Your Suit

If you're still unsure about how to pack your suit and would rather use your minimal suitcase space for other items, there are more options. The easiest thing to do is simply wear your suit on the airplane. Show up looking like a million bucks when you fly! It might not be the most comfortable option, but this is a great way to ensure your suit arrives at your destination wrinkle-free. This trick is especially beneficial if your travel time is not too long.

Another option is to ask if you really need the suit at all and, if so, look into options for renting one at your final destination. The Black Tux is a rental company that can have a suit delivered right to your doorstep. Stitch & Tie is another option for suit rentals. If you have any friends or family in the area where you're traveling to, ask them if they know of a place that can help with suit rentals (or borrow a suit from them, if you are similar sizes).

If you do decide to pack your suit in your carry-on, make sure you'll have access to a steamer or iron when you arrive at your destination. Most hotels offer these, so even if your suit gets a little wrinkly en route, there are still ways to salvage it and make your looks and trip as smooth as ever.

The Best Aluminum Suitcases for Every Trip

Aluminum suitcases are a travel conundrum. In some ways, they offer what every hard-sided suitcase buyer cares about – i.e., the ultimate amount of protection for their personal items. Many are also very repairable, allowing them to last for decades.

But these unique bags are also tremendously impractical and expensive compared to  other luggage options . The truth is, most aluminum suitcases ding easily, aren’t expandable, and weigh a hefty 9 to 12 pounds.

Still, denying their  aesthetic appeal  and sense of substance in a world increasingly drowning in plastics is difficult.

If you’re interested in traveling with an aluminum suitcase on your next adventure, here are the carry-on options we’ve tested, researched, and recommend to suit various budgets and use cases.

How We Tested Our Aluminum Suitcase Recommendations

sterling pacific

Our tester took several suitcases all over the continental US — from Austin, Texas to New York City. They assessed how easy the suitcases were to pack, but also roll through security, lift into the overhead bin, lock, load back into the car and unload, too. They also surveyed how the suitcases faired after a fall down a luggage carousel or after being pushed into the rear of a luggage hold.

  • Has hidden pockets and comes with a laundry bag
  • Simple and stylish design
  • Divider easily becomes misshapen through use
  • Wheels aren’t as solid as other options on this list
  • $645 at Away

If you’re a serial over-packer, turn to the roomy interior of Away’s The Carry-On: Aluminum Edition , a heavy-duty option that’ll earn its fair share of dents and dings. Because Away sells directly to consumers, they can drop costs by cutting out the middlemen. That makes Away an excellent value.

Our tester found the hidden pockets and included laundry bag helpful, and the bag comes case comes with a complimentary leather name tag, too. Plus, these wheels are some of the best of the bunch, but not quite as sturdy as Sterling Pacific’s.

away suitcase

As for packing it, it’s easy to do, but it’d be easier if both sides were identical, our tester says. The mesh, tube-formed divider eventually becomes misshapen, especially if you overpack it a few times. The other side, on the other hand, stays true to form, and helps keep the contents packed tightly down.

Rimowa Classic Cabin Carry-On

  • Built to last, thanks to its grooved aluminum body and ball-bearing mounted wheels
  • Interior dividers help compress excess cargo
  • Network includes warranty service from in-hotel concierges
  • Spacious and roomy for packing however you’d like
  • Telescopic handle doesn't feel on par with the rest of the suitcase
  • Despite its price, it’s still prone to dings and scratches
  • $1,430 at Rimowa

This is the status suitcase. Recognizable by its ridged aluminum exterior, Rimowa’s Original Cabin Carry-On is a go-to for first-class, full-time and famous travelers. (You’ve probably seen plenty of touring musicians with theirs covered in stickers. It’s the cool thing to do.) The German brand dates back the late 19th century and production still takes place in Cologne, where the company is headquartered. It is now, however, owned by luxury conglomerate LVMH.

What does that mean? Well, the quality hasn’t changed, but the conversations around the suitcases have. LVMH elevated the brand, making it as much a cultural touchpoint as it is a celebrated titan of consumer product design. You’ll appreciate its all-aluminum exterior, but the handles, which are hard plastic, feel lackluster in comparison.

rimowa

But Rimowa’s aluminum suitcases are well-regarded for good reason. The shiny silver cases can take a beating, but they show their bruises boldly. This look’s not for everyone, especially if they bought the $1,400 suitcase for how it looks mint , fresh out of the box upon delivery.

The dents and dings, though, are a good thing, a constant reminder your case is actually working. These dents could’ve been cracks if you were rolling a polycarbonate option. As such, think of aluminum, despite its connotations, as the ultimate choice: a material meant to be put to the test, because it’ll pass with flying colors.

An Affordable Option with Aluminum-Aesthetics

Monos Carry-On Hybrid Aluminum suitcase standing on ground with white background

Monos Hybrid Carry-On

  • Boasts plenty of scuff protection and corner bumpers
  • Solid styling and available in multiple colors
  • Telescopic handle has four height settings, including one appropriate for children
  • Easily acquires scuffs
  • Not actually made from Aluminum
  • $325.00 at Monos

(Shhhhh… this bag is actually polycarbonate. How else could it be this affordable?) OK, the secret’s out. This option isn’t aluminum and as such, we debated whether it should be even included in this list. However, it has an aluminum frame. The front and back plates are cut from aerospace-grade polycarbonate, which Monos says proves just as indestructible. Everything’s tonal here, too, meaning all aluminum-colored everything.

Our tester says it’s nearly indistinguishable, though, and despite only taking it on a few trips so far, they haven’t run into any issues, even when they were forced to check it at the gate. It arrived with fewer literal dents, but it did show signs of damage nonetheless: a few dark-colored scuffs.

A Truly All-Aluminum Suitcase

cabin travel case

Sterling Pacific 35L Cabin Travel Case

  • Made from 100% Aluminum
  • Minimal two-wheel design reduces the number of possible failure points
  • Rectangular design makes it easy to pack
  • Attractive, eye-catching design and leather handles
  • Quickly attracts scuffs
  • Very expensive
  • Two-wheel design can be more of a hassle to roll vs. four-wheel options
  • $1,950 at sterlingpacific.com
  • $1,950 at Amazon

Unlike many options on this list which liberally integrate plastic into their designs, Sterling Pacific’s 35L Cabin Travel Case is made from 100 percent aluminum: an aerospace-grade aluminum body, reinforced aluminum corners, aluminum wheel housings and an aluminum trolley. It also stands out for its two wheel design and unusual shape: a slender lid offsets a deep trunk, where you can stow quite a lot. But its deviations from the norm, if you will, aren’t without reason. The two-wheel design reduces the number of possible failure points, and the rectangular shape makes it easier to pack.

Sure, it’s a little wonky-looking, but it was easy to adjust to after a few rolls, our tester says, plus the suitcase is less likely to snag on a cracked sidewalk or tile floor, like four-wheeled designs do.

sterling pacific

The $1,950 suitcase is extremely expensive and may not come with the luxury recognition of a brand like Rimowa , for example, but that’s also part of its appeal. Sterling Pacific is carving its own lane, catering to elite travelers with high standards — and staying with them through the life of their suitcase, offering a lifetime warranty and endless complimentary repairs.

A Great Aluminum Suitcase for Charging Modern Devices

aluminum suitcase

Arlo Skye The Frame Carry-On Max: Aluminum Edition

  • The shell, wraparound frame, corner caps and hinges are all made from aluminum alloys
  • Full grain leather handles
  • Very smooth, quiet wheels
  • Antimicrobial odor-fighting lining
  • Has built-in USB-C and USB-A charging ports
  • Thinner aluminum shell
  • Battery must be removed before each flight
  • $695.00 at arloskye.com

Founded by former execs from luggage specialists Tumi and Louis Vuitton, Arlo Skye brings luxurious touches to its approach-ably priced bags. Its aluminum carry-on features an antimicrobial lining, sports a built-in USB-C and -A charging port and some of the quietest wheels of all the bags on the market, reviewers say. It also boasts the largest capacity of any bag on this list, is available in champagne and all-black aluminum color ways too, and features more parts made from aluminum as well as premium-feeling full grain leather handles. One of our testers wished the aluminum shell was slightly thicker, though, which would help deter dents. They were upset that the suitcase returned from its first journey with a sizable wound, even though that’s a part of the art of aluminum suitcases.

An Affordable Option Actually Made from Aluminum

level8 aluminum carry on

Level8 Gibralter Aluminum Carry-On

  • Mesh interior pocket divider
  • Handles made of metal alloy, not plastic
  • Noiseless handles with slow release to prevent pinching
  • Line-free exterior that looks different
  • Some users say internal straps broke after a few uses
  • Several users say its frame and depth is not large enough
  • $430 at level8cases.com
  • $429 at Amazon

Aerospace-grade aluminum magnesium alloy is a material known for its lightweight and its ability to resist corrosion and other damage. As such, it makes for an ideal frame for any suitcase. Level8 applies it to its zipper-less lock closure suitcase, which has super-quiet wheels and an alloy handle, too.

The interior dividers were identical, too, which made packing easy, but they can be removed as well if you prefer to pack without them. Our tester found despite the slight frame of this suitcase, it still packed quite a bit. This bag is also the most affordable option on our list that’s actually made from an aluminum magnesium alloy, instead of using plastic to merely mimic aluminum’s metallic look. To some degree, you’ll get what you pay for quality-wise, but we appreciate that Level8 includes a 4-piece packing cube set and suitcase cover protector with the purchase price.

The Most Distinctive Aluminum Suitcase

aluminum suitcase

Tumi 19 Degree Continental Carry-On

  • Smooth, 360-degree wheels
  • Unique style makes it stand out from others on this list
  • Option for Monogramming
  • Can be too small for longer trips
  • Heavy for its size
  • $1,295 at Tumi
  • $1,295 at Nordstrom

There’s a kinetic beauty to the fluid lines of Tumi’s aluminum luggage — it looks like it’s moving even when it’s standing still. With a 35L capacity, it can comfortably hold everything you need for a few days away, but not much longer, and that’s the primary complaint from reviewers. That and this suitcase’s weight.

It’s fairly heavy for a small-sized suitcase, but that helps it roll smoother, a perk plenty praised online. If you want the lightest suitcase, this isn’t it. This suitcase does also technically have the shortest listed warranty of the options on this list (along with Zero Haliburton), but then again, it’s hard to know how some of the newer luggage brands will follow through on their promises, and Tumi has been in business since 1975. The bottom line is if you want something different from a brand that’s made luggage longer than any other company on this list save Rimowa, Tumi’s the right fit for you.

A More Durable Aluminum Suitcase Option

aluminum suitcases

Zero Haliburton Pursuit Aluminum International Carry-On

  • Solid, heavy-duty construction
  • Comes with plenty of internal dividers and pockets
  • Heftier dividers would better support packing
  • Distracting blue-hued handles
  • $1,045 at Zero Haliburton
  • $1,045 at Amazon

Zero Halliburton is one of a handful of American-made brands whose wares have been to space. Its latest edition features the same hard-sided protection as the bags it started making in 1938 and carries a 5-year warranty.

Reviewers like that the suitcase has handles on all sides, making lifting it into an overhead bin or up off of a luggage carousel easy. But some cited the coated handles as, well, a little too distracting from the silver suitcase. Many say it’d fare better if the handles were leather or even silver plastic, not the distracting, shiny blue hue. As for packing it, heftier, more helpful dividers would’ve been nice, they say, to keep everything in its correct place.

One Bag to Be Wary Of

Anyone researching aluminum luggage will likely come across the  MVST. Select Trek Aluminum Suitcase . The luggage looks quite similar to the iconic Rimowa Classic Cabin carry-on included in this guide but costs a mere $395, making it immediately appealing to many.

While we have yet to test the bag directly, there is  enough online chatter from previous customers  to indicate the bag may be too good to be true.

Previous buyers complain of not being notified about long shipping delays and more concerning quality control issues such as broken wheels and hinges after only a few trips.

The Main Benefits of Traveling with Aluminum Suitcases

rimowa luggage hard shell

  • Aluminum suitcases tend to protect packed contents better and won’t crack like polycarbonate suitcases or tear like soft-sided options.
  • Aluminum suitcases are repairable, meaning they can have a much longer usable lifespan if they are maintained well. Many polycarbonate suitcases aren’t repairable at all and will wind up in the trash sooner.
  • Aluminum suitcases will patina overtime as you take on adventures, creating a unique look that’s all your own.

The Main Downsides of Using Aluminum Suitcases

rimowa luggage hard shell

  • Aluminum suitcases are usually more expensive than similarly-sized hard-sided plastic luggage.
  • Aluminum suitcases will show dings and dents over time.
  • Aluminum suitcases are often heavier than plastic hard-sided suitcases.
  • Aluminum suitcases cannot be overpacked, even more so than other hard-sided bags made of plastic.
  • Aluminum suitcases tend to be more flashy and may draw unwanted attention to your belongings while traveling.

A Quick Word on What Aluminum Luggage Warranties Actually Cover

Many luggage companies proudly tout lifetime warranties, but in most cases, these lifetime warranties apply only to defects that may result in critical components breaking.

They do not cover the dings, dents, and scratches a piece of aluminum luggage will invariably pick up over time, which may look alarming but are just cosmetic issues.

Traveling Light: How to Pack a Carry-on

An illustration depicts the back of a person with curly dark hair and headphones wearing a backpack that is transparent. The items inside -- sneakers, clothing, separate small bags containing things like glasses, toothpaste, medications -- are all neatly arranged. The person is standing in a windowed corridor, and, in one corner of the illustration, a plane can be seen rising in the sky.

By Stephanie Rosenbloom

For some travelers, the mere thought of packing a carry-on bag can sour even the most potent vacation anticipation . But packing light can also be a creative endeavor that helps build excitement for your upcoming getaway. And with fees for checked bags on the rise, it makes economic sense to master the art of packing a carry-on. Here are some tips on how to save space — and your sanity.

Get in the minimalist mind-set

If you tend to over-pack, begin by thinking about why you’re traveling in the first place. Doing so may help you focus on the many sights, sounds, scents and tastes you’re about to experience instead of the many outfits you’re unable to cram into your bag.

“It’s all about the mind-set,” said Pauline Frommer, co-president of the Frommer’s Guidebooks and Frommers.com , who has not checked a bag in more than 20 years. “When you’re traveling,” she explained, “it’s more about you seeing the world than the world seeing you.”

Pack colors that coordinate so you can bring fewer items yet still have options, like re-wearing the same pants with various shirts. Darker colors mean a stain won’t render something unwearable. And invest in some technical clothing. Such pieces keep you warm without being bulky, are easy to move in, have pockets for necessities like glasses and cellphones, and resist water as well as odors so they can be worn more than once. Many outdoor apparel brands ( Patagonia and Arc’teryx , to name a couple) make clothes that are great for hiking yet sleek enough to dress up when the sun goes down. Just pack some eye-catching accessories.

“I tend to maybe throw in a necklace,” Ms. Frommer said, which she wears on top of her day clothing “to make it look more dressy.”

Choose your bag

There is no perfect carry-on for everyone. To determine the bag that’s best for you, ask yourself how you’ll be using it. Will you be carrying it long distances, through subway turnstiles and city streets? Or will you typically be rolling off a plane and into a car? Bags with wheels tend to be less taxing on your body, though if you’ll be taking public transportation or flights of stairs, a backpack or lightweight duffel can keep you hands-free and may make for smoother transitions. Also consider the things you’ll be bringing. Structured, harder luggage is often best for keeping dress clothes wrinkle-free and organizing unwieldy items like high heels. That said, a soft duffel bag without wheels has a better chance of being able to squish into an overhead bin.

Nerissa Settie, who, as the butler executive at Raffles Doha in Qatar trains the butler team and oversees day-to-day operations, wrote in an email that “each option offers a different benefit,” with duffel bags providing more depth, and wheeled bags providing more compartments and less strain on your shoulders. If you opt for the latter, buy a bag with four wheels, Ms. Settie advised, which is easier to maneuver along an aircraft aisle.

Whatever bag you choose, know the rules. Carry-on bag dimensions vary by airline, so be sure to check your specific airline’s size and weight requirements, including those of any connecting carriers.

Also pay attention to your route and fare class, which can affect the number of bags you’re allowed to carry on, as well as their weight. And remember: While your bag may comply with the carry-on policy, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be allowed to bring it on. For instance, if you’re in a low boarding group, you’re more likely to have to gate-check your bag. With that in mind, keep essential items like medicines in a small bag that can easily fit under the seat in front of you. If you’re unsure about whether you’re allowed to pack a particular item, check out the government websites for the places you plan to travel through, such as the Transportation Security Administration’s What Can I Bring? page and the European Commission’s Information for Air Travellers page.

Know when to fold ‘em

When it comes to packing your clothes, the question is: Should you fold them flat or roll them? Ms. Settie recommends rolling because it uses less space and results in fewer creases. That’s easy enough with T-shirts, but what about a suit jacket? The butlers at Raffles Doha use a technique that involves turning one shoulder of the jacket inside-out and then tucking the opposite shoulder inside it, aligning the sleeves and then folding the jacket in half while inside-out, which minimizes wrinkling and helps protect the outer layer of the jacket (Ms. Settie shared instructions here ). Or simply wear your blazer onto the plane, something Ms. Settie suggests because jackets and jeans take up a lot of space and weigh more. Besides, she said, doing so gives you “the added benefit of traveling in style.”

As you place items in your bag, think about balance. Put heavier items, like shoes, at the bottom (near the wheels, if your bag has them). Ms. Frommer said she typically packs two pairs and stashes things such as socks and jewelry in them.

Clothing should go toward the top of your bag to reduce creases created from weight, with jackets going in last, Ms. Settie said. You can also add a layer of protection from wrinkles by putting skirts and blouses in plastic dry cleaning bags before folding them flat and then placing them at the top of your bag.

Borrow and buy

A bit of research ahead of time can free up a lot of room. Call your hotel or vacation rental to find out if items like hair dryers and sunscreen are provided so you don’t have to pack your own, and ask if they have washing machines or offer cleaning at reasonable prices.

And don’t worry about packing for every possible eventuality. Buying practical things while you’re away can be great fun. It’s an opportunity to talk with locals, try regional products (like the affordable beauty elixirs found in Parisian pharmacies) and, of course, bring a few treasures home, thanks to all that room that’s left in your bag.

You're Packing Your Carry-On Luggage Wrong. How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Bag

Your step-by-step guide to packing your carry-on to get you swiftly through TSA.

suit bag travel carry on

Make the most of that overhead bin space by finding the right carry-on suitcase, and learning the best way to pack it.

A carry-on bag is most people's security blanket, best friend and lifeline when traveling. Your carry-on often has essentials for the airplane - for me, that means mostly snacks but a carry-on may also include valuables such as passports, medicine, toiletries and cash. If you choose the  right carry-on bag  and pack it strategically, you can fit more and be hassled less as you move through the airport and TSA.

Following Transportation Security Administration guidelines for each major US airline is a must, and doing a little research on the latest rules and regulations can help you ace the experience without getting held up. (For more travel tips, explore the 12 travel essentials you need for every vacation and take a look at  this travel checklist .)

What TSA officials do isn't in your control, but what you pack and how how you pack it for your next trip is. Here's how to pack your carry-on bag efficiently for your next business or pleasure travel.

The best carry-on travel bags

Before you start packing, you'll have to find the right carry-on bag. Here are a few important things to keep in mind.

What size carry-on should you get?

The first and most important aspect to think about is size. Federal Aviation Administration regulations say carry-on items can't exceed dimensions of 22 by 14 by 9 inches, though you might find an inch or two of difference depending on the airline. The general rule is that it must fit under your seat or in the overhead enclosed storage compartment on the plane.

Here's a quick reference for size limits for the most popular US airlines.

Carry-on items by airline

Carry-ons should have an easy access tech compartment.

If you decide to bring electronics like a laptop , iPad , Kindle or other tablet on board, your carry-on should ideally have a separate, padded compartment for secure packing. Be sure these compartments are easily accessible, since at security checkpoints, the TSA will require you to remove your electronic devices and place them in the plastic X-ray tray.

Make sure you're carry-on is comfortable on your back or shoulder

Remember, you'll need to lug your carry-on bag or suitcase across the airport and down long corridors, and you might even need to run with it so you don't miss your connection. Consider whether you need padded handles or cushioned straps or a backpack or a rolling suitcase for ease.

Airplane passenger stowing his carry-on luggage under the seat in front of him.

The general rule is that all carry-ons must fit under your seat or in the overhead enclosed storage compartment on the plane.

How to pack your carry-on the right way

Though what to pack in your carry-on ultimately depends on your preferences, there are a few guidelines for the best way to pack your luggage:

  • Pack items in layers (shoes one layer, clothes one layer, electronics one layer, etc.).
  • Pack the things you'll use the least at the bottom of the bag.
  • Keep most of your valuables in your carry-on luggage, and store them in side compartments or safely padded around other items.
  • Place valuables at the bottom of your bag, away from the opening.
  • Keep your wallet, credit cards and cash in an inner pocket so they'll be harder to steal.
  • Pack a small, separate bag for toiletries. (Liquids, gels and aerosols packed in carry-on must follow the  3-1-1 liquids rule : 3.4 ounces or less per container; all liquids must fit in one quart size, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; one bag per passenger.)
  • Roll your clothes tightly to save space in your luggage.

Sometimes you lose your luggage. It happens. Though it's frustrating, it's important to pack a spare set of clothes (including socks and underwear!) in your carry-on to hold you over until your bags are found and returned. Pack clothing that can easily be rolled up and put in the bottom of your bag.

Rolled clothing can save space in your tight bag or suitcase.

Essential items for your carry-on bag

There's some items that are just better in your carry-on luggage. If you do decide to check a bag, be sure to keep these items with you on the flight. Most of these carry-on essentials are items that would be hard to replace or purchase when you get to your destination.

  • Prescriptions and medications
  • Contact lenses or glasses
  • Valuables like jewelry, wallets, passports, IDs and boarding passes
  • Cameras and smartphones
  • Entertainment like tablets, books and laptops
  • Headphones to watch TV or movies if a longer flight
  • Chargers for electronics
  • Printed itinerary, or hotel and flight confirmations

Explore this complete guide for essential travel items you may forget to pack.

Place your larger electronics in secure yet easily accessible compartments, since you'll need to pull them out at TSA security checkpoints.

What you should never pack in your carry-on bag

The TSA has specific guidelines covering which items are banned from flights, and the agency takes those rules very seriously. In 2022 alone, the TSA screened nearly 761 million passengers and crew members nationwide, and it confiscated a record number of firearms (6,301) and many other items. TSA policy says that individuals carrying weapons, especially loaded firearms, can face fines or criminal penalties.

These are some of the most commonly confiscated items:

  • Box cutters, utility knives and razors
  • Bats, clubs and blades
  • Swiss Army knives
  • Sharp

If in doubt, always refer to the  TSA's guidelines on packing for flights, to ensure you have safe and easy travels.

It's easier said than done to "pack light," but it is a wise sentiment. When you want to bring plenty of outfit options (plus shoes and accessories to match), your full skincare routine, workout gear, and must-haves for working remotely, lightweight luggage can help balance out your load.

But the best suitcases, weekenders, backpacks, underseat bags, and duffels aren't just lightweight. They're also durable, easy to maneuver, and spacious, with lots of compartments and standout features like expanders, compression panels, laptop sleeves, TSA-approved locks, and USB charging ports.

To help you narrow down your options, we've tested over 450 pieces of luggage and sorted through our insights to choose the best lightweight options. Our Travel + Leisure editors packed the bags full, rolled them over different flooring materials, carried them for extended periods of time, threw them off tables, hit them with baseball bats and even built an airplane set where we could lift the bags into overhead bins. We then put together this list of notably lightweight carry-ons, checked bags, personal items, and other types of bags with high scores and low weights.

Best Overall

Delsey paris hardside expandable luggage with spinner wheels.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 4 /5
  • Durability 4.7 /5

At 5.3 pounds, this hardside suitcase is perfectly lightweight and compact while fitting a surprising amount of clothes — no expander needed.

The handle is somewhat short, and it sustained a minor dent from our bat swings.

Weighing 5.3 pounds, the Delsey Paris Clavel was one of the lightest suitcases we tried. At 22 by 14 by 10 inches, it's nice and compact, too. But while this carry-on looks small , we were pleasantly surprised by how many clothes we could fit inside. We didn't even need to use the expander, which adds another three-quarters of an inch to the depth. We also like that there are two main compartments separated by a zippered divider, plus tie-down straps and shoe pockets. Lifting it overhead was a piece of cake compared to heavier models, and it should easily fit into any overhead bin.

This hardside suitcase has a polypropylene (thermoplastic) exterior that stood up well to our baseball bat tests, although it sustained a minor dent from one particularly enthusiastic swing. The rigid shell gives it a modern, high-end appearance. Beyond the basic luggage colors, the brand offers the option for a statement hue or something a little easier to spot at baggage claim, like blush, teal, or stark white.

Thanks to the four-wheel spinner design, the Clavel has good maneuverability and rolls smoothly over bumps, cracks, and carpet. One drawback is that we felt the handle was a little short and slightly loose. Still, we were thoroughly impressed with this suitcase and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to pretty much anyone looking for a piece of lightweight carry-on luggage . The price is right on point, too, and Delsey backs it with a five-year warranty.

Best Carry-on

Samsonite freeform carry-on spinner.

  • Maneuverability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

Boasting a spacious capacity, smooth-rolling wheels, and an exceptionally durable shell, this 6.5-pound spinner earned perfect scores in all our tests.

It doesn't come with a laundry bag or have a zippered section for dirty clothes.

Samsonite's Freeform Carry-on clocked perfect scores in all testing categories. While this 6.5-pounder is conveniently compact, we could fit enough clothes to get through a four-day trip without having to expand it. There's no removable satchel for dirty clothes, but it does have a zippered separator for shoes, plus a few pockets and cross straps.

We found the Freeform easy to maneuver on both hard flooring and carpet. We were also fans of the adjustable aluminum handle, which locks in place with the press of a button. After whacking it with a bat, the exterior sustained zero dents, scuffs, or scratches. Considering the durable construction, minimalist-modern design, spacious capacity, and reasonable price tag, we think this carry-on is a prime choice for frequent fliers and short getaways.

Best Checked

July checked plus light.

This 105-liter hardside bag is incredibly spacious while still weighing under 10 pounds.

Although it does have some pockets inside, we’d add more organizational features.

Checked bags can get heavy quickly, especially hardside ones, but this 105-liter suitcase from July is noticeably lightweight for its large size, weighing in at around nine pounds. The first thing we noticed during our tests was how spacious it was, with two large compartments inside (one on each side) and several zippered pockets for stashing smaller items. We also found its curved eggshell design to be slimmer and less bulky than similar checked bags from other brands, making it super easy to maneuver through our obstacle course — which should translate well when you’re trying to navigate through crowded airports or hotel lobbies. Even though it’s lightweight like many July luggage pieces , the outer shell still feels extremely durable, surviving our baseball bat and drop tests with no dents or scratches. Though its by no means the lightest option on this list, we think this is your best bet if you’re looking for a large-capacity checked bag that won’t weigh you down.

Best Softside

It luggage softside carry-on spinner.

  • Durability 4 /5

This monochromatic carry-on is exceptionally easy to lift by its thick carrying handles, and it has a two-inch expander zipper.

The bag scratches more easily than we’d like.

It’s hard to find attractive softside suitcases these days, but we love this stylish carry-on that comes in monochromatic colors like harbour blue, lavender, or charcoal — including colored wheels, zippers, and handles. This felt spacious for a carry-on, and if you do a little more shopping than expected on your trip or just want to squeeze in a few extra outfits, it has an expandable zipper for an extra two inches and a large, padded pocket on the front.

The handle has three different heights and felt strong enough that we could lift the fully packed bag easily by the handle without it feeling loose. We also took notice of how large and padded the top and side carry handles are, which made it easy to lift the bag into the overhead bins on our airplane set; this will make it easy if you have to carry this bag up or down the stairs at any point during your travels. After we threw the bag off a table several times in our lab, it did get a few light scratches, but the softside material stood up well. We also thought there were some thoughtful touches, like waterproof material inside to safeguard against spills and a loop on the front of the bag to attach a luggage tag.

Best Budget

Amazon basics hardside spinner.

This budget-friendly spinner weighs just over seven pounds and has an unexpectedly spacious interior.

There are only a few colors, and it doesn't have a TSA lock.

On a budget? Amazon has you covered. After trying it out first-hand, we can confirm that the Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner has excellent maneuverability, even when we rolled it over bumps and carpeted floors. It also turns and spins like a champ. What's more: the thermoplastic shell lives up to its scratch-resistant claims, with no signs of damage from our drop tests and bat swings.

We were able to fit all items on our packing list, including clothes, coats, shoes, and toiletries. Expanding it wasn't necessary, but it's nice to know there's room to spare. While this wallet-friendly suitcase doesn't have a TSA lock or any smart features, its functionality blew our expectations out of the water. And although there are only a few colors available, we like the sleek, pared-down design.

Travelpro Maxlite Hardside Spinner

  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Design 4 /5
  • Maneuverability 3.5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

With a shiny textured shell that conceals scratches and resists cracks, this suitcase is the perfect balance of stylish and durable.

The capacity is somewhat small without the expander, and it can be slightly unstable on all four wheels.

The 6.3-pound Travelpro Maxlite Air really stood out in terms of aesthetics. It has a crack-resistant polycarbonate shell and a shiny ribbed exterior with a denim-like texture that's supposed to help conceal scratches and scuffs. Sure enough, we saw no damage whatsoever after shoving it off a table and whacking it with a bat.

We were able to fit everything into the dual interior compartments but had to expand it, which could make it too big to pass as a carry-on. With that said, a compression pad or cross straps would have been nice. This suitcase boasts eight wheels, but it's actually four sets of dual casters. It rolled nicely on two casters, even over bumps and around sharp turns, though it was less stable on all four. All things considered, we think the price is fair and would recommend this to someone looking for stylish, durable luggage.

The Details: 6.3 pounds | 23 x 14.5 x 9.5 inches | 46-liter capacity | Carry-on | Expandable

Most Durable

Coolife abs+pc spinner trolley.

The exceptionally sturdy yet flexible shell can be knocked around without damage while making it easy to pack all the essentials for a getaway.

This carry-on isn't expandable, and it doesn't take corners as well on two wheels.

At 6.7 pounds, the Coolife Spinner Trolley isn't the lightest of the lightweight luggage we tested, but it's undoubtedly the most durable. The ABS+PC (acrylonitrile butadiene and polycarbonate) shell is an exceptionally sturdy thermoplastic blend. After shoving it off multiple surfaces and giving it a few good hits with a bat, there was no visible damage.

This carry-on isn't expandable, but thanks to the strong yet slightly flexible exterior, stretchy cross bands, and smooth zippers, we were able to stuff in all the essentials for a four-day trip. It also has a double TSA lock for extra protection. Maneuvering the Spinner Trolley was a breeze, though it doesn't take corners as tightly on two wheels. We'd expect it to last several years and think it's a stellar option for such an affordable price.

The Details: 6.7 pounds | 21 x 14 x 9.5 inches | 38-liter capacity | Carry-on

Best Carry-on Duffel

Bellroy classic weekender 45l.

  • Organization 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5

This 45-liter, barrel-shaped bag is water-resistant and has a slip pocket for an Apple AirTag.

The clips that attach the crossbody strap to the bag are plastic rather than metal.

This spacious duffel bag easily fit our full packing list during testing, including four shirts, a jacket, pants, a toiletry kit, a makeup kit, a laptop, chargers, two pairs of shoes, and more, with plenty of room to spare. The bag has two top handles; a detachable, padded shoulder strap; a luggage pass-through, internal slip pockets for smaller items; an external pocket with a key clip; and an internal Apple AirTag slip pocket. Some large bags can't help but feel bulky when you're wearing them as a crossbody, but this 45-liter bag has a barrel shape that makes it slim and easy to carry, and we noticed that it managed to feel more lightweight and portable than some other bags we tested that had the same exact packing list. You can also feel safe if you have to carry this bag in the rain thanks to the water-resistant polyester material (made from 100 percent recycled PET plastic bottles) and storm flaps that protect the main zipper.

Best Checked Duffel

Eagle creek cargo hauler.

  • Maneuverability 3 /5

This extra-large and incredibly durable wheeled duffel is under five pounds, with a generous capacity and comfortable shoulder straps.

There's no proper handle, and it would be nice if there were a couple more pockets.

The Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler is an excellent checked luggage option, and at 4.7 pounds, it weighs less than most carry-ons. We could easily fit all items on the packing list, though a couple more pockets or separators would have helped keep things organized. This extra-large duffel has two wheels and glides pretty well, but since it doesn't have an extendable handle, rolling it around isn't very comfortable. However, the shoulder straps allow you to carry it like a backpack.

This durable duffel bag showed no signs of damage during our whacking and shoving tests. The bold monochrome colors add a tasteful touch to the rugged design while helping you quickly recognize it at baggage claim . While it's a bit pricey for this type of luggage, the Cargo Hauler seems like it'll last a long time. We think it's a solid choice for camping, hiking, backpacking, and other outdoor excursions.

The Details: 4.7 pounds | 34 x 15 x 14 inches | 130-liter capacity | Checked

Best Underseat

Travelpro carry-on travel tote bag.

  • Maneuverability 4.5 /5
  • Functionality 3.5 /5

This 1.6-pound tote is conveniently compact yet spacious, with comfortable straps and a trolley sleeve.

It may only fit under the seat of larger planes and might not be big enough to replace a suitcase.

If you need luggage you can stow beneath the seat in front of you, the Maxlite 5 Tote is a solid choice. Measuring 18 x 11 x 8 inches, it's conveniently compact — and under two pounds when empty! This softside bag fit all the necessities for a two-day trip, including clothes, toiletries, and a laptop, with room to spare. One thing to note is that it was too big to fit into the underseat compartment we tested it with, but it should work on a larger plane. And you can always stash it overhead if needed.

The wheel-free design has a padded shoulder strap and comfortable handles so it's not awkward to carry around. There's also a trolley sleeve that slides over the handle of a larger suitcase. The price is a little high for the size, but if you can swing it, we think it's a great travel companion. It's also good as supplemental luggage to checked baggage.

The Details: 1.6 pounds | 18 x 11 x 8 inches | 28-liter capacity | Underseat bag

Best Weekender

Mz wallace nik.

This versatile bag has so many organizational features, including seven exterior pockets, nine interior pockets, and a laptop sleeve.

Although the bag is comfortable to carry, we would add padding to the straps.

The most lightweight option on this list, the MZ Wallace Nik Duffel Bag is so resourceful for travel: it’s compact enough to use as an overnight bag or even a daily commuter bag, but you can also use it for a longer four or five day trip if you maximize packing space with all the pockets and compartments. This weekender shines when it comes to organization since there are tons of pockets and storage space, including seven pockets on the outside, nine pockets on the inside, a 16-inch laptop sleeve, a detachable pouch, and a key ring strap. Even when we packed this bag full, it still felt comfortable to carry because of the quilted material that has a natural padding, although the crossbody strap doesn’t have any padding on it. It has long top handles; a detachable, adjustable crossbody strap; and a trolley sleeve, giving you the option to carry it in so many different ways. All in all, we think the high price tag is well worth it for this versatile weekender.

The Details: 2.1 pounds | 16.93 x 7.09 x 12.2 inches | Underseat bag

Best Expandable

Samsonite virtuosa expandable carry-on.

  • Design 3.5 /5

This felt spacious for a carry-on, and you can expand it even more if needed.

It took some effort to adjust the handle when the bag was packed full.

One of Samsonite’s newest launches from the Virtuosa collection, this stylish carry-on felt pleasantly portable and spacious, with wheels that spun around seamlessly over different terrains and through our obstacle course. This is one of the largest carry-ons on this list, and you can make it even larger if you use the expandable zipper, but keep in mind that it may not fit in the overhead bin on every airline if you fill it to capacity.

We found the organizational features to be extremely helpful when packing the bag: one side has adjustable compression straps and the other has a waterproof plastic divider with two pockets that would be ideal for toiletries. The handle has the ability to raise up or down in one-inch height adjustments for a customizable fit, though we found it required some effort to adjust when you fully pack the bag.

The Details: 6.4 pounds | 23 x 15 x 10 inches | Carry-on | Expandable

Best Colors

Samsonite omni pc carry-on.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Maneuverability 3.8 /5

This expandable carry-on makes it easy to pack and organize your stuff, and its rigid shell seems almost impossible to damage.

The small wheels sometimes get caught, and it seems to work a little better on two wheels than on four.

The 6.8-pound Samsonite Omni PC is one of our favorite hardside suitcase. It's not only lightweight, but also compact, fitting snugly into an overhead bin — and it has an expander if you need some wiggle room. With zippered compartments, pockets, and cross straps, we found it easy to fit and organize everything on our packing list. Stuffing it to the brim doesn't affect maneuverability — it rolls well on carpeted floors and turns easily.

However, the small-ish wheels sometimes get caught in ruts, and the suitcase is not quite up to par with how a spinner should move. This carry-on held up well to our bat swings, with no scratches or dents in sight. The price is sharp, too. We'd recommend it to anyone looking for affordable luggage, as well as overpackers and those who don't want to worry about damage. We especially love it for all the fun colorways that will make you stand out at any airport, including Caribbean blue, army green, red, pink, purple, and more (including some neutral options, too).

The Details: 6.8 pounds | 22 x 15 x 9.5 inches | Carry-on | Expandable

Best Backpack

Osprey farpoint 40 backpack.

  • Comfort 5 /5

This exceptionally durable backpack weighs barely more than three pounds and is large enough to fit everything for a three-day trip.

This popular pack sells out often.

The Osprey Farpoint 40 weighs barely more than three pounds when empty, and it's nearly as spacious as a carry-on suitcase. With a generously sized main compartment and ample pockets, there's plenty of room to pack for a three-day trip — maybe longer. Not only that, but this backpack is extremely durable. The rip-stop nylon held up to our whacks and shoves like it was nothing. Even after packing it full, it zipped closed without a fuss, and the seams showed no signs of stress. Carrying it around was a cakewalk, too. If you're heading on a backpacking trip or just like traveling light with the freedom to speed-walk hands-free through the airport , the Farpoint 40 is for you.

The Details: 3.1 pounds | 19.5 x 14 x 8 inches | 40-liter capacity | Backpack

Our T+L team has tested more than 450 pieces of luggage in our New York City lab, choosing the most lightweight options that performed well for this particular article. During our tests, we weigh the bags, then assess the maneuverability, portability, capacity, durability, and value. We pack each bag with a predetermined packing to see what the capacity looks like and to assess organizational features like pockets and compression straps.

To see how the bags would perform in a real-life setting, we rolled them around on different types of flooring, raced them through obstacle courses, slung them over our shoulders to carry them around, and hoisted them over our heads into overhead bins on our airplane set. Next, we hit each piece a few times with a baseball bat and shoved it off a table to evaluate durability and potential wear and tear, taking notes of any scuff marks or dents.

We also test each bag on our real-world travels for an additional six months after our lab tests to make sure they perform just as well on real flights, car rides, train rides, and more. With size, price, and weight in mind, the luggage options with the highest ratings and the lightest weights were selected for this roundup, and we will continue to update this article as we test new bags.

Other Lightweight Luggage We Liked

Three pieces of lightweight luggage we tested couldn’t quite earn a spot on our list but had standout features that may meet the needs of some travelers.

Hartmann Luxe II Carry-on Spinner : This 6.8-pound suitcase has a spacious main compartment and a retro yet high-end appearance. It works well on two wheels but not so much on four, and it's a bit too bulky for an overhead bin.

Kipling Darcey Small Carry-on Rolling Luggage : Weighing just over five pounds, this carry-on is lightweight, spacious enough for a four-day trip, and compact enough to fit in an overhead compartment. That said, the maneuverability is clunky compared to others we tried.

People / Tamara Staples

Lipault Plume Cabin Spinner : This duffel-suitcase hybrid weighs only 4.8 pounds and comes in stylish color options, but we found it difficult to access the exterior pocket when the suitcase is packed full, and the handle felt a little wobbly.

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside Carry-on Spinner : This 5.4-pound spinner rolls smoothly for the most part and didn't sustain any scuffs from our bat test. However, it has a somewhat outdated appearance, and in the end, we liked the hardside carry-on and tote from the Maxlite line better.

Tips for Buying Lightweight Luggage

Remember that durability still matters.

Prioritizing a lightweight design doesn't mean you have to sacrifice durability. Hardside luggage tends to be better for safeguarding electronics and preventing your stuff from getting crushed. And while they’re usually easy to wipe clean, some rigid suitcases are prone to scuffing. Believe it or not, softside carriers are often just as sturdy. Although textile exteriors can be trickier to keep clean, they also usually don't scuff as easily or show dirt.

Look for comfort features

Besides staying within any potential weight limits for plane travel, one of the main points of lightweight luggage is to make your trip easier and more efficient . With this in mind, you'll want to look for models with various comfort features. These may include easy-to-push spinner wheels, a telescoping handle, padded grab handles, an adjustable strap, or even a trolley sleeve.

The lightest-weight carry-ons are usually anywhere from 4.5 to 6.5 pounds. For checked suitcases, you're looking at closer to eight to 10 pounds. However, alternative luggage options, such as duffels, weekenders, and carry-on backpacks , can be as light as two or three pounds when empty.

Hardside luggage made from polycarbonate, ABS, and polypropylene tend to be the most durable bags, but softside luggage can be just as protective when it comes to storing your items for takeoff.

Our tests proved that lightweight luggage can be just as durable as other bags. In our lab, we hit the luggage pieces with a baseball bat and pushed them off a table to evaluate potential wear and tear. We found that most of these bags easily stood up to our tests with no visible damage.

It depends on the airline. Some set the weight limit for carry-on luggage at about 35 pounds, though international flights may be more restrictive. But unlike checked baggage that's weighed in at the counter, weight limits are often not enforced very strictly. And some domestic airlines don't have any restrictions.

This also varies among airlines. Many set the weight limit for checked baggage at 50 pounds. But in many cases, you can go up to 70 pounds for an extra fee . At any rate, it's a good idea to check the airline's website before packing, as rules and guidelines are subject to change .

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

For this story, commerce writer Theresa Holland combed through in-house testing insights, then referenced product descriptions and luggage manuals to create a comprehensive roundup of the best lightweight luggage available today.
