Sumida River Cruise & Tokyo Bay Cruise: Enjoy Sightseeing and Dining on Tokyo's Beloved Waterway (+Cherry Blossom Tours & Tickets)

Tokyo, a city famed for its vibrant streets and rich history, also boasts a lesser-known aquatic side. The city's heart is cradled by Tokyo Bay and the Sumida River , which have been central to its development and culture. These waters are not just busy trade routes but also home to the 'suijo bus' or water buses. More than just a mode of transport, these water buses offer unique views of Tokyo and sometimes, culinary delights. Let's dive into the world of Tokyo's stylish water buses, blending sightseeing with gourmet experiences on its historic waterways.

Tokyo Cruise – The Standard of Tokyo’s Water Buses

Tokyo mizube line – taking you to the edge of tokyo, japan’s first “on demand” water bus taxi – in tokyo, urban launch – tokyo’s fanciest water bus experience, symphony tokyo bay cruise – enjoy gorgeous views and amazing food, other cruises, cherry blossom cruises.

Tokyo Cruise – The Standard of Tokyo’s Water Buses

Tokyo Cruise, the emblematic name in Tokyo's water bus service, is synonymous with the scenic journeys along the Sumida River . It connects key locations such as Asakusa with Hinode Pier in Hamamatsucho, Toyosu, and Odaiba Kaihin Park . The company operating Tokyo Cruise has a storied history, dating back a century to its origins as the "Sumida River Steamship Company." Back then, it was famed for its issenjoki , or "one sen steamboats," so named because a single journey cost just one sen—a modest sum that translates to about 100 yen in today's terms. These affordable steamboats were a popular mode of transportation among the city's populace, providing an accessible and efficient way to traverse Tokyo's most active areas.

sumida river trip

Today, Tokyo Cruise operates several routes to cater to different interests. The Sumida River Line makes the journey from Asakusa to Hinode Pier, right where the river meets Tokyo Bay. For those looking to explore further, the Odaiba Line connects Hinode Pier directly to Odaiba Kaihin Park . Additionally, the Tokyo Big Sight & Palette Town Line offers a route from Hinode Pier to two of Odaiba 's attractions: Tokyo Big Sight and Palette Town. One of the conveniences of these water buses is that they do not require prior booking. With frequent departures, they provide a seamless and enjoyable way to experience Tokyo's sights from the water. Whether you're traveling between Asakusa and Odaiba or exploring local landmarks , these cruises offer a laid-back sightseeing adventure. While the Asakusa - Odaiba course is particularly recommended for sightseers, it is good to note that Hamarikyu Gardens and Toyosu (home of the Toyosu Fish Market) are also destinations reachable from Asakusa , though there is a limited number of daily departures. For an enhanced experience, the Sumida River Line features an audio guide available for 300 yen in English, Chinese, and Korean. This guide highlights some of Tokyo's iconic landmarks visible from the water, like Tokyo Skytree (R) and the Rainbow Bridge, offering a unique perspective of Japan's bustling capital from aboard a Tokyo Cruise.

Tokyo Cruise boasts two standout vessels in its fleet, the Himiko and the Hotaluna , both crafted under the visionary design of Leiji Matsumoto, the famed mangaka behind iconic series such as Space Battleship Yamato , Space Pirate Captain Harlock , and Galaxy Express 999 . These ships, with their distinctive sci-fi-inspired aesthetics, have become the defining symbols of Tokyo's water bus service. The Himiko and Hotaluna each serve specific routes. The Himiko line ferries passengers from Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park and Toyosu , offering a direct link between these bustling districts. The Hotaluna, on the other hand, operates from Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park , making a stop at Hinode Pier en route. Aboard the Himiko, travelers are treated to more than just scenic views; an onboard café serves unique sweets and cocktails, enhancing the journey with flavors as adventurous as the vessel's design. Additionally, an audio guide features characters from Leiji Matsumoto's celebrated work, Galaxy Express 999 , enriching the experience with a touch of interstellar fantasy. Finally, special seasonal cruises are also available (see the website here ). In spring , from March 30 to April 3, you can enjoy a cherry blossom cruise in Tokyo. These may be only available via online reservation ahead of the desired cruise date.

The Tokyo Mizube Line is another favorite among both locals and tourists, known for its extensive network of stops. It boasts eighteen boarding points along the Sumida River , stretching from Asakusa to the far reaches of Azusawa and Itabashi , and even to the Saitama prefectural border. Additionally, the line extends along the Arakawa River , reaching as far as Kasai Rinkai Park in Edogawa, showcasing the eastern side of Tokyo. The convenience of no-reservation boarding and the availability of an English audio guide on board make the Tokyo Mizube Line an appealing option for easy and informative sightseeing along Tokyo's scenic waterways.

sumida river trip

The Tokyo Mizube Line operates three main routes. The Asakusa / Odaiba Cruise travels between Asakusa and Odaiba , offering six stops including Sumida Kuyakusho (City Hall), Ryogoku Rivercenter, Etchujima, St. Luke’s Garden , and Hamarikyu Gardens for flexible boarding and alighting. The Asakusa / Kasai Cruise takes you from Ryogoku upstream to Asakusa , then downstream towards Odaiba Seaside Park , and onwards to Kasai Rinkai Park in Tokyo's east, home to attractions like an aquarium and a Ferris wheel. Lastly, the Odaiba Kasai Tour connects Kasai Rinkai Park with Odaiba Seaside Park , traversing a wide swath of Tokyo's bay area. Both the Asakusa Kasai Cruise and the Odaiba Kasai Tour offer views of the Tokyo Gate Bridge, a stunning 8-kilometer-long structure that spans Tokyo Bay, a sight best appreciated from the water on the Tokyo Mizube Line.

Japan’s First “On Demand” Water Bus Taxi – in Tokyo!

In addition to the scenic water buses, Tokyo introduced a pioneering service in 2015: Japan's first "on-demand boats" known as Tokyo Water Taxi. Functioning similarly to traditional taxis, these water taxis offer personalized service across four key areas: Shinagawa , Tsukiji , Nihonbashi, and Asakusa , catering to passengers' specific destinations on demand. Visually, Tokyo Water Taxis stand out, mirroring the iconic look of classic taxis with their bright yellow exteriors. This nod to the famous yellow cabs of New York adds a distinctive charm to Tokyo's waterways. Their innovative approach to maritime transport is garnering significant interest from both locals and tourists, marking a fresh chapter in Tokyo's urban mobility.

Tokyo Water Taxi provides three enticing options for visitors looking to explore the city's waterways. The Basic Ride - Direct Plan is ideal for those seeking flexibility, allowing unlimited rides over seven days (weekdays only) across 19 different stops, including Tennozu Pier and Toyosu. Conveniently, you can summon a water taxi with a call or online request, similar to hailing a land taxi. This service supports English, Chinese, and Korean, making it accessible to a wide array of travelers. For a more expansive experience, the Basic Ride - Custom Plan offers extended access beyond seven days, including weekends. It features 27 boarding and alighting points, providing passengers the liberty to disembark at any desired location spotted during the journey. This plan is perfect for personalized itineraries, allowing detours and tailor-made cruise tours. The Basic Ride - Recommended Plan caters to those looking for a spontaneous adventure, operating between Tamachi and Tennozu Pier on Wednesday and Friday nights. Although reservations are needed (available in Japanese only), there's a chance for impromptu rides at a low price if spaces are available. This plan is an excellent introduction to Tokyo’s water taxi service for those not ready to commit to a full course. Finally, there are special cherry blossom cruises (operated from March 19 to April 7 in 2024) to enjoy. Since these are chartered, they are best for enjoying with friends or family. A lot of the development that allowed Tokyo to flourish was done around the Sumida River.

Asahi Beer Hall

The Asahi Beer Hall along the Sumida River is one of the most fascinating pieces of architecture you will ever see. The building is modeled after a beer mug, with a signature gold structure at the top to symbolize beer froth.

The building also houses the headquarters for Asahi Brewery, which produces popular Japanese beer and other products throughout Japan.

While the company has seen many changes over the years, it has been in existence since the late 1800s.

There is a lot of interesting history surrounding the island’s creation. It was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu who came to the area from Osaka with the help of Tsukada fisherman.

There’s a little area on the bridge where you can take a seat and take in all of your surroundings. You are also able to see a gorgeous view of the Sumida River, as well as some of the beautiful landscapes that Tokyo has to offer.

Eitai Bridge

This bridge has been a part of Tokyo for hundreds of years. You can either take a ferry ride below the bridge or take a stroll along the expansive bridge.

The bridge was originally built with timber, but unfortunately, it had collapsed in the 1800s and then was destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake.

When the bridge was rebuilt, it was made with blue steel, and the uniquely colorful bridge still stands sturdily today after seeing all that tragedy. It’s made even more beautiful at night when it lights up.

Basho Shrine And Statue

Basho was a monumental figure of Japanese history , as he is the person who developed haiku poetry. He is also celebrated in Japan for his overall contributions to literature and art. The statue commemorates all that he contributed to Japan, and he is an interesting figure to learn more about.

The shrine features a stone statue of Basho, as well as a reconfiguration of what Basho’s home looked like, and a monument with one of his famous poems.

Hama Rikyu Garden

Japan is known for its incredibly beautiful gardens , and the Hama Rikyu Garden is no exception. The garden being located so close to the river just adds to its charm. The garden also features relaxing ponds throughout the garden.

There is also a teahouse located in the garden where visitors are able to sit back and relax and take in all the lovely nature surrounding them. As with many landmark locations in Japan, the garden also has an interesting history.

It was opened to the public eventually and still is today, but you can still see old relics from its origins scattered throughout the garden.

Umaya Bridge

There are so many bridges around Sumida River, but there are none quite like the Umaya Bridge. The bridge features signature triple arches unlike any of the other bridges in the area.

The name translates to horse stable, and thus, there are many horse statues decorating the bridge. The reason for the name dates back to the Edo period, where there were horse stables in the area.

You can take a stroll on the bridge and take in the surroundings, or travel underneath the bridge on a cruise down the river. It’s also a great vantage point if you are planning on visiting the Sumida River during the fireworks festival.

Sumida River Water Bus Route

Foreign Footsteps in Yokohama 22 - Aimé Humbert

Tomoko Kamishima

Three big rivers run through east Tokyo and eventually pour into Tokyo Bay. If you only take subways in Tokyo, you won’t realize that it has so many bridges connecting its many districts. Taking a Water Bus and experiencing Tokyo from the river is a great way to grasp how water-centric this city really is.

Aimé Humbert

About 150 years ago, one Swiss man spent ten months in Japan observing Tokyo (Edo) and Yokohama very carefully. His name was Aimé Humbert. Humbert was born in the canton of Neuchatel in Switzerland in 1819. Later in life, Humbert was sent to Japan as a representative of the Swiss government to help negotiate a treaty between Switzerland and Japan. Humbert arrived at Nagasaki on April 9th 1863 and then headed to Yokohama.

While in Japan, Humbert researched and collected information on the culture of Japan and lifestyle of the Japanese people. He concentrated his efforts mainly in Yokohama and Tokyo. He especially liked the rivers. He hired Felice Beato to take pictures, and artists such as Charles Wirgman to give life to hundreds of his observations for an enormous project, “Le Japon Illustre”, which he published in Paris in 1870. It was comprised of 856 pages in two volumes, 62 chapters, and 476 photos or illustrations. The book was extremely popular and was soon translated into English and Russian—although in shorter editions.

Observing Tokyo by Water Bus ( please check the schedule and price).

I highly recommend that you enjoy the Sumida River route from Asakusa to Hama-rikyu Garden (near Shimbashi). It takes about 30 minutes. The dock at Hama-rikyu is actually inside the garden, and so you also need to pay the garden entrance fee when you buy your boat ticket. Coming from the hustle and bustle of Asakusa into the quiet and serene Hama-rikyu Garden is quite a refreshing experience. And you will also have a spectacular view of the new Tokyo Sky Tree tower along the way.

Cruising the Sumida River 150 years ago

When Humbert cruised the Sumida River, most of the ships were roofed pleasure boats. And boatmen rowed it with long paddles (see photo). Humbert must have enjoyed a slow, relaxing cruise. Here are two short excerpt from “Le Japon Illustre” (this writer’s translation).

“A huge number of canals connect like a web, and these waterways put life into the city. Among them, the most important one is the canal running under Nihonbashi Bridge. It goes straight through the center of the city…”

“Groups of ordinary people are quite busy on and around Eitaibashi Bridge, along the riverside and on the streets nearby. Kids are always running around and playing between them. Kids never care how much trouble they cause others.”

His observations seem to be quite accurate and insightful, despite the many restrictions placed on Humbert’s movements. His observations are compatible with the sketches we usually hear and see about that period from Japanese novels, pictures and movies.

The views from pleasure boats today are quite different from what Humbert saw in 1863. But we can still enjoy the city and people watching from a Water Bus. Why don’t you discover something new about Japan from the Sumida River?

The Sumida River is Tokyo's best known river and is a great place to see as visitors to the Japanese capital, offering numerous cruise options, and dotted with a medley of photogenic bridges.

Sumida River, Tokyo 隅田川

The Sumida River ( Sumidagawa ) is one of Tokyo's main rivers, and the most familiar Tokyo river to visitors to the city. The Sumida River starts directly north of Tokyo, then goes out eastward through eastern Tokyo.

The river branches off the larger Arakawa River at the Iwabuchi Watergate in Tokyo's Kita ward, and goes about 24 km down to Tokyo Bay via Adachi, Arakawa, Sumida, Taito, Koto and Chuo wards.

There are 37 bridges on the Sumida River, most of them for road traffic, but there are several train bridges, a pedestrian bridge, and a pipe bridge, as well. Most of the bridges across the Sumida River join Taito ward (west bank) with Sumida ward (east bank). (Note that the  kanji  for the Sumida river 隅田川 and for Sumida ward 墨田区 are different.)

Sumida River Walk

If you've ever taken the train from Tobu-Asakusa station to Nikko, you'll certainly remember the magnificent view, especially in the morning and evening, of the Sumida River just after departure. Since summer 2020, it has also been possible to enjoy this view without taking the train, as a pedestrian path, called the Sumida River Walk , has been built under the iron railway bridge. In addition to the varied views of the river and cityscape, this also shortens the walk from Asakusa to the Tokyo Skytree, especially if you walk along the Kitajukken River. You also pass Tokyo Mizumachi, a new open-air shopping mall, as well as restaurants and cafés directly on the Kitajukken, beneath the railway line.

The Sumida River branches off the larger Arakawa River at the Iwabuchi Watergate in Tokyo's Kita ward, and goes about 24 km down to Tokyo Bay via Adachi, Arakawa, Sumida, Taito, Koto and Chuo wards. The stretch of the river that gets the most tourist traffic is between Taito and Sumida wards , only about 2.5km east of the Imperial Palace, and just a short train ride from Tokyo Station .

The Sumida River promenade

Sumida-gawa is around 160 m wide at this point, and you naturally get a much better impression on foot than by briefly looking down from a train window. While trains cross the bridge upside down, the wooden plank path, accessible between 7 and 10 p.m., stretches to the side. In some places, glass panes have been embedded in the floor, to create a glass floor for viewing the river through the glass. A sign reading "Yumi Katsura Lover's Sancturary", also allows love padlocks to be affixed to the fence.

The Sumida River promenade is therefore an ideal place for couples in love, especially at sunset, and of course for long-married people. The walkway is fully wheelchair-accessible, thanks to low-angle ramps.

The Sumida River Promenade links the two parts of Sumida Park , stretching along both banks of the river. Very popular, and not just during the cherry blossom season, the southern part of the park has been redeveloped with numerous family-friendly amenities.

Sumida River Attractions

Along its length are numerous sights and attractions. The Asakusa district in Taito ward, served by the two main Tokyo water cruise companies' ferries, is famous for its bustling old-time Tokyo atmosphere and ancient, picturesque Sensoji Temple . The towering, elegant Tokyo Skytree in Sumida ward, offering unparalleled panoramas of the metropolis, and lots of fun shopping, is accessible from the same point in the river, a little east from Asakusa, over Azuma Bridge.

A few minutes by boat south of Asakusa you glide past the  Ryogoku  district - the heart of  sumo wrestling  in Japan , with its green hexagonal-roofed Kokugikan Stadium, and, behind it, the excellent  Edo-Tokyo Museum . Futher down near the mouth of the river is the elegant, green oasis of  Hamarikyu Garden , which many ferries serve.  Odaiba , even further downriver where it meets Tokyo Bay, is a broad, spacious island offering various enjoyable ways to spend your time in Tokyo.

The  Sumida River Fireworks Festival  happens towards the end of July on the stretch of the river between Shirahige Bridge and Ryogoku Bridge. This is the biggest of Tokyo's fireworks festivals and is extremely popular with the locals. However, unless your idea of fun is hours waiting in a hot crush of people for a 90-minute display that, while spectacular, is an hour and a half of being tightly stuck in a dense crowd while bossy marshals' megaphones constantly blare, then it is best enjoyed from afar.

Tokyo Mizumachi, for food and shopping

At the southern end of the park, beneath the Tobu-Isesaki railroad line, lies the Tokyo Mizumachi . In fine weather, you can even sit out in the open air, right on the water's edge, for a bite to eat or simply a cup of coffee. The canal-lined Kitajukken connects the Sumida and Kyunaka rivers, which in turn flows into the great Arakawa River. There are currently 13 stores, restaurants, cafés and even a youth hostel below the railway line. The Kontent design boutique is a must-see, as some of the products it sells cannot be found in other stores. For a good cup of coffee, it's worth stopping off at Deus Ex Machina Asakusa or Muya . Fans of Japanese sweets and desserts will be delighted at ichiya. For a hearty lunch or dinner, Shake Tree Diner, LAND_A and Jack's Wife Frida are three other stops offering Western cuisine. For those wishing to choose from a wider range of number of restaurants, nearby Solamachi, below the Tokyo Skytree, offers a vast choice.

Enjoy the river from a boat

Thanks to the many available  Sumida River pleasure cruises , the most easily accessed section of the river is from Asakusa southwards. The sightseeing highlights of the Sumida River are the Tokyo Skytree and the many bridges, varying in color and design, that span the Sumida. The Sumida River also provides easy access by sightseeing cruise boat to the shopping and amusements of the Toyosu district in Tokyo Bay.

Putachuan is a small river near Asakusa in Tokyo. Although it is not a big river, the river is clear and there are many bridges of different shapes. We live near Putianchuan. The scenery in the morning and night is very beautiful.

user-icon

Putianchuan is actually a small river, but it is not a stinky ditch, it is very clean, and it is very close to the Skytree and My Wife Bridge and other attractions. The two sides of the river are basically bustling commercial areas.

user-icon

At 19-21 p.m. on the last Saturday evening of July every year, it is a large-scale fire sacrifice in Japan. Hotels, cruise ships and watchtowers with sparks were booked up early. So we have to go ahead to occupy our seats. It's better to occupy the position on the right bank of Yakuda Kawabata, which is on the side of Tokyo Sky Tree. At that time, the Transportation Bureau controlled many subway entrances, which were also closed and crowded. So it's better for the hotel to set up a place nearby for walking, otherwise it's really hard. In fact, there are too many people here and many of them are still covered by buildings. The experience of seeing sparks is not very good. It's better to go to other cities. Although there are many people, the planning and management of road traffic in Japan are very good, and there is no chaos and congestion at all.

user-icon

Starting from Shallow Cao Temple, I walked to Yutianchuan and stood on my wife's red bridge to enjoy the beautiful scenery on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. In fact, I have been here many times. Cherry blossoms are blooming along the bank in spring and fireworks meetings are very lively in summer. This time, it is winter. Yutianchuan has a special flavor against the blue sky and white clouds.

user-icon

Beautiful skyline in Smida, walking along the river, you can see a lot of nice buildings

user-icon

When I was a child, I learned to sing "Yutian River Spring comes, a beautiful scenery". This time, it is not spring, but also a good scenery. Blue sky and white clouds, all kinds of bridges and buildings reflect each other. You can also travel by boat, enjoy the metropolitan Tokyo from different angles, even enjoy flowers, invite the moon, enjoy delicacies and watch fireworks.

Good atmosphere A short walk from Asakusa Station.

73m superyacht Yalla launched by CRN

Italian yacht builder CRN has launched its 73m superyacht Yalla .

CRN welcomed more than 1,000 guests to the launching ceremony of CRN 132 Yalla , held late this morning at its shipyard in Ancona, Italy. The launch ceremony included speeches from Alberto Galassi, new CEO of the Ferretti Group , Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN, Xinyu Xu, Vice-chairman of Weichai Group, and the Mayor of Ancona Valeria Mancinelli.

Part of the Ferretti Group,  CRN  specialises in custom yachts up to 90 metres in steel and aluminium. Yalla is the first yacht built by CRN on its new 12.5m beam platform. More than 430,000 hours from CRN and its subcontractors were spent on Yalla 's build, with contributions from 150 employees.

Exterior styling comes from Omega Architects in The Netherlands, in close collaboration with the CRN Engineering Department. The five-deck motor yacht features sleek, sporty lines and a streamlined profile. Superyacht Yalla 's interiors are by Droulers Architecture, working with CRN's Interiors and Design Office. She hosts up to 12 guests in its six cabins, including an owner's suite and VIP cabins, along with 22 crew members.

'Following the launch of CRN 133 61m superyacht a few months ago, we are proud to celebrate the launch of the new Yalla of 73m, which represents a challenge and an objective for the whole CRN shipyard,' says Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN. ' Yalla will mark another important result for the development of CRN in the world. A sincere thanks for the trust of the owner and for the work of all employees and subcontractors who have worked on the project, to the architects Franck Laupman of Omega Architects and to Droulers Architecture. I also thank our shareholder Weichai Group and the new CEO of the Group Alberto Galassi for their participation in this important event for CRN and for the whole Ferretti Group.'

The Ferretti Group currently has five superyachts underway at the Ancona shipyard, including the 74m CRN 131, 55m CRN 134, a Ferretti Custom Line CL 124, the 61m CRN 133 and the Riva 122 Mythos , which are at the delivery stage.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
