Difficulty Ratings

Easy, moderate, challenging … What does this really mean? Below you can read the definitions we use for our ratings. We hope this will help you get an idea of the trip difficulty to make sure you choose a trip that suits you best.

Easy Suitable for most people in fair condition. You have to be able to walk on uneven surfaces and hike for at least 2 – 3 hours at a slow pace, with breaks. Trails are generally of good quality and glaciers travel at a relatively low angle.

Moderate Suitable for those in good condition who are able to walk for about 4 hours at a low or moderate pace. Trails are generally of good quality and glaciers travel at a relatively low angle.

Challenging For someone in good hiking condition and with experience of hiking. Trails are generally in fair conditions but some parts of the tour might be off track. Glacier/snow travel can be on uneven ground with challenging sections. Increased distance. We recommend guests have the ability to cover 12 km a day on rugged trails and snow.

Demanding Only a few of our trips are defined as Demanding. Hence most of our tours are rated Easy, moderate, or challenging.

Demanding tours are for someone in very good hiking and physical condition. Trails are generally in fair conditions but large sections of the tour might be off track. Glacier/snow travel on uneven ground with some challenging sections. Increased distance. We recommend guests have the ability to cover 20 km a day on uneven trails and snow. A significant increase in elevation and some technical difficulty should be expected.

Equipment list

Equipment needed can vary greatly from season to season as well as the length of your tour. The following list can be used as a guideline for our trekking, hiking, and longer Snowmobile tours in Iceland.

Try to pack as lightly as possible and take only essentials. Excess baggage can be a burden to you and to our support crew. Keep in mind that there are limits on how much your duffel bag can weigh because the weight restrictions on international and domestic flights are usually around 20 kg.

Luggage for Multiday tours and longer journeys with assistance vehicle An extra bag clearly marked with your name can be kept at your Reykjavik accommodation. Large duffel bag (60/80 liters) sturdy and water-resistant, not exceeding 15 kg Daypack (30 to 50 liters)

Clothing You will need to bring comfortable and adequate clothing to protect you from the cold and wet weather. Wool, synthetics, and wool/synthetic blends are good. We discourage the use of cotton, as this does not insulate against cold or wet conditions. When camping, tents are provided. You will be responsible for bringing your mattress and sleeping bag.

When layering, the innermost layer should be long underwear. The middle layer can be a synthetic turtleneck or wool shirt, and pants. The outermost layer should be a synthetic jacket, and/or a good quality Gore-Tex wind/rain parka and over-pants.

For quantities for each item listed, use your own judgment, based on the expected weather conditions and overall packing/weight restrictions for your luggage.

  • Synthetic or wool thermal underwear
  • Long-sleeved, synthetic, or wool shirt

Fantastic experience

"We had an amazing experience on this tour. Our driver (Elias) was knowledgeable and had the perfect balance of sharing information but also giving us time to reflect and enjoy the breathtaking landscape of Iceland. Highly recommend this company, tour, and driver!"

Glacier hike with Alberto Marini

"We had a private guided glacier walk for 3 active senior friends with Alberto Marini who is an Italian-born mountain/rock climber. Though cautious by nature, I felt completely comfortable with Alberto who apparently trained many of the other guides we encountered. He was knowledgeable about glaciers and the natural history of Iceland-verified by my geologist husband. Definitely worth doing especially if with Alberto."

Snowmobiling gone wild on a glacier

"We had a private tour with 2 couples to do snowmobiling on a glacier. Magnus was a very skilled ATV driver taking us on an adventurous 1hour drive to get to the glacier to meet snowmobiles. We enjoyed the vantage point even on a cloudy windy day to ride around to see the surrounding volcanoes. Quite a fun 3 hour tour."

Private Tour to Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach

" We took a private tour from Hotel Ranga out to Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. We rented a car but decided it was too far to drive on our own there and back in one day so we booked a tour with Southcoast.

Our driver, Stefan, was fantastic! It was a 10-hour journey (including a stop for lunch) so it was nice to have a guide that was a great conversationalist and very knowledgeable about Iceland. He answered all of our questions about Iceland and stopped at a few places we never would have found on our own.

We had a gorgeous day and the pictures we got on Diamond Beach were out of this world. Would highly recommend this company and this guide, especially if you're interested in a private tour. "

No matter what time of year it is, a journey to Landmannalaugar is always amazing.

During summer you see multicolored rhyolite mountains known for dramatic lighting and array of colors, including yellow, pink, fluorescent green and purple, brown, black and white.

The area offers several shorter hikes in this stunning scenery, giving you a spectacular view of everything Landmannalaugar has to offer. You will also be stunned by old lava fields, inactive explosion craters, waterfalls, and the unforgettable hot pool, so don’t forget your bathing suits and towel.

During winter months, the whole area is covered in deep snow, giving it a truly magical feel. The way to Landmannalaugar is ill accessible, making this the ultimate super jeep tour, utilizing the vehicle to its’ full potential!

Once you get there, act like a local and take a dip in the hot pool, surrounded by banks of melting ice and snow. It will be a mix of hot and cold, and truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

On a clear day, Mt. Hekla will show herself to you. She is the most active volcano in Iceland and since the time of settlement, around 1000 years ago, Mt. Hekla has erupted numerous times blanketing Iceland with thick layers of ash and pumice. It is no wonder that early settlers in Iceland believed Mt. Hekla to be the gateway to hell! In the past few decades Mt. Hekla has erupted roughly every ten years, the last one in the year 2000, so she is slightly overdue!

Your Super Jeep tour in Iceland day by day itinerary

Reykjavik - golden circle - hekla volcano region.

approx. 240km

Your driver guide will pick you up in the morning at your accommodation in Reykjavík. Then it´s off to the sites of the Golden Circle, the most iconic and essential of Iceland´s attractions: Discover the effects of the oceanic rift at Thingvellir, also the historic site of the Icelandic parliament, the geyser Strokkurat Geysir, gushing up to twenty meters high every 5 – 8 minutes like a metronome and then the great waterfall Gullfoss where the Hvita river has carved an impressive canyon. Then follows the valley Thjorsardalur as we join the foothills of Mount Hekla and our hotel for the night.

Accommodationwith dinner included at Hotel Leirubakki.  Lunch en route (not included).

Hekla Region - Landmannalaugar - Hvolsvöllur Region

approx. 230km

Depart for the highland´s uninhabited and inaccessible regions in winter. Inaccessible? Not for our super jeep vehicles and their experienced drivers! Through snow-covered regions where the track is sometimes non-existent, these machines will lead you to the heart of Iceland´s volcanic land mass-Landmannalaugar. Here, an unlikely swim in a river of hot water is waiting for you! Along the way, discover the Tungnaa River canyon and the explosion craters of Ljotipollur and Blahylur which is one of the largest in Iceland! At the end of the day we take a drive through the southern farmlands to Hotel Selid which will be our accommodation for the next two nights.

Accommodation with dinner included at Hotel Selid.  Picnic lunch included.

The Thorsmork Valley

approx. 110km

This day is dedicated to the exploration of Thorsmork undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and spectacular areas of Iceland. Wedged between three volcanic glacial peaks and carved by ancient ice flows, the beauty this valley is only overshadowed by the massive umbrella of the glaciers. The Thorsmork valley is only accessible by a 4×4 track which is interrupted by many fords, but don´t worry, our vehicles cross these without fear as we take you to discover the landscapes that inspired the backdrop to Tolkien´s novels such as the beautiful waterfall Seljalandsfoss, the glacier tongue Gigjokull and the hidden canyon wonder of Stakkholtsgja. Then of course, the forest of Thorsmork itself, which is likely buried under a thick layer of snow. Here, we will find the foothills of the volcano “Eyjafjallajökull”, the one that, at its last eruption in 2010 was the subject of much talk and for most, impossible to pronounce! (Well, not for Icelanders of course!) On this adventure we may even teach you to pronounce this infamous name! Short hikes will be on offer, including the ascent of Valahnjukur that even though it appears small, offers spectacular views of the entire valley. At the end of the day, we head back to Hotel Selid to relax and enjoy another good meal.

outh Coast - Reykjanes Peninsula - Reykjavik

approx. 300km

There are yet more highlights to see before ending our adventure! We begin this final day by exploring the south coast: the impressive 60m high waterfall -Skogafoss, the Reynishverfi beach with it´s cliffs of impeccable basalt formations, not to mention an unforgettable detour through the volcanic sand beach of Skogasandur. Our super jeeps will flirt with the waves of the North Atlantic that sweep away any trace of our passage as we cross vast stretch of this black sand beach. We continue to the Reykjanes Peninsula and the discovery of wild coastlines and lunar landscapes shaped by numerous volcanic eruptions. Here, geothermal energy is manifested in various forms, such as at Krysuvik, where dense vapourstouched with theodour of sulphur escape from bubbling mud pools. After skirting the lake – Kleifarvatn, we reach the end of the day and our journey, the Icelandic capital.

Lunch en route, not included.

super jeep trip iceland

Guided 10 Hour Super Jeep Tour of the South Coast & Eyjafjallajokull with Transfer from Reykjavik

Seljalandsfoss is a gorgeous, narrow waterfall located on Iceland's diverse South Coast.

Description

Hurry now and join this superb super-jeep tour exploring the many majestic attractions of Iceland's South Coast, as well as the frozen slopes of Eyjafjallajökull glacier.

You will start this adventurous day by being picked up at your Reykjavík accommodation in our modified super jeep, a vehicle capable of traversing even the most extreme Icelandic terrain. You will then be driven towards Gigjökull glacier, a glacier tongue coming down from the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano. Eyjafjallajökull erupted in 2010, causing turmoil to European air traffic.

During this enormous eruption, millions of litres of melted ice originating from Eyjafjallajokull came bursting down the mountainside, causing massive floods that would change the landscape for years to come. Before we arrive at Gígjökull, the super-jeep will cross a number of rivers, really showing off what this vehicle's large tyres are capable of.

At Gígjökull, you will have the opportunity to marvel at the staggering blue and black ice that covers the nearby mountainside. Seeing one of Iceland's glaciers up close is, truly, one of the most mesmerising experiences available in Iceland, and it is one of the key experiences that makes this country so special.

After enough time at the glacier, you will begin your return journey home; by no means the end of your adventure, however. You will next see Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most spectacular waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss is a rare example of where you can actually have a look behind the cascading water and come out on the other side

After a walk behind the waterfall we will head towards the black sandy beaches that reach as far as the eye; here, you will have even more fun with the super-jeep, driving past the rolling waves of the Atlantic. You will also make a lunch stop, though this will fit in as best with the attractions of the day.

On the way back, you will make the last stop for the day, Skógafoss. While the driver inflates the huge tires of the jeep, you will have the opportunity to take a closer look at this beautiful, 15 m wide waterfall before heading back to Reykjavík.

So what are you waiting for? Hurry now and you too can experience the incredible landscape of the South Coast, as well as the immense glacier, Eyjafjallajökull. Check availability by choosing a date.

Iceland Super Jeeps: Are They Really Necessary?

The majority of Iceland’s landscape is comprised of rough lava rock. Even the pathways that were established centuries ago across the country’s interior are difficult to navigate. As a result, there are still many areas where certain vehicles cannot travel. This has caused both visitors and locals to stick to Route 1, also called the Ring Road.

But what if you want to visit the more remote parts of the Land of Fire and Ice? How do you get there, and what type of vehicle do you need? Well, if you want to leave the bumpy driving to someone else, there’s always the option to head out on a super jeep Iceland tour. However, are they really necessary? Can you do this same kind of trip, but autonomously? Let’s find out.

Iceland Super jeep company

What is a Super Jeep?

There’s not an exact definition for a super jeep, as it doesn’t describe a specific vehicle. Simply put, a super jeep is a big vehicle with four-wheel drive that is able to tackle rougher roads. These cars are well-equipped for off-roading, traversing through uneven terrain, crossing rivers and even climbing hills. That being said, do you actually need one of these for Iceland?

There are many parts of Iceland that boast roads which are still unpaved and covered with gravel. While regular-sized, 2WD drive cars can generally handle these, the going isn’t smooth. Big 4WD vehicles will allow for an easier journey and reduce the chances of getting stuck.

Areas like the Westfjords and Eastfjords are where you’ll have to contend with unpaved, fairly flat roads. But if you venture in the country’s interior (known as the highlands), there are more considerations. Most of the highland roads—F-roads—involve river crossings, and there will be potholes and hills to contend with. Here's further information on driving Iceland's F-Roads .

F-Roads warning post

So, do you need a super jeep to journey into the highlands? This depends on the specific F-road and the weather conditions. You won’t need to worry about driving them in winter because F-roads are only open from June to August. Additionally, since off-road driving is illegal here, that’s not a concern either.

If your highland route involves crossing a deep river, it is imperative to have a raised vehicle that is designed for such a task. Take our word for it- it’s very easy to get stuck if heavy rainfall was predominant in recent days.

Is an Iceland Super Jeep Necessary?

For the vast majority of places you will travel to in Iceland, you won’t need a super jeep . Their off-road capabilities will go unused here , due to the previously mentioned laws against them.

If you wish to hire what is considered a super jeep, you’re of course welcome to do so. In fact, Cars Iceland offers its own version, a Land Rover Defender 4x4 or similar model. Notice that on our listing of vehicles online, ‘Suitable for F-roads’ is written next to certain cars. Only these cars should be taken into the Highlands.

You’re probably wondering: if you do hire our version of a super jeep, what are the benefits?

Due to the excellent suspension, those gravel roads won’t feel nearly as bumpy. Additionally, the driving overall is more comfortable than in a smaller car.

You’ll have increased security when crossing rivers.

You’ll have more storage space for supplies and camping equipment.

You’ll have more seats for big family trips; the Defender is a seven-seater.

The bigger engine means more horsepower, making hill climbs much easier.

4x4 vehicle on snowy ground

If you fancy taking advantage of a super jeep rental in Iceland, one thing’s for certain: you’ll have an absolute ball behind the wheel. This experience will give you a chance to get away from the well-traveled tourist routes and see remote Iceland for all it’s worth. But what if you just want a small car for your holiday, and want to sample a super jeep briefly?

Super Jeep Tours

Generally speaking, there are two types of super jeep tours and super jeep rentals in Iceland. There are those where you sit back and enjoy the journey while an experienced guide drives, and then then there are convoy-like Jeep tours, in which you drive your own vehicle but follow behind a guide who is doing the same.

So should you join a super jeep tour in Iceland , and if so, what type? Well, if you’re nervous about driving a big vehicle through rough terrain, the first option will suit you best. With this one, you don’t have to focus on navigation, freeing your senses up to take in your surroundings.

A convoy super jeep tour would allow you to experience driving one of the big vehicles yourself, but also eliminate the chance of getting lost. Although Google Maps makes losing connection much harder, it’s still possible, especially with incomplete/outdated routes and loss of signal. Thankfully, you’ll have an expert close by to assist you if something goes wrong.

When choosing whether to join a tour, the first step is to research where you’d like to go in Iceland. Look at the route to get there, what the obstacles are on your way, as well as recommendations from other travelers. If you’re experienced in driving roads of this type and are confident about doing it for yourself in Iceland, a tour is largely unnecessary .

Iceland super jeep tour

On the other hand, if the thought of driving gravel roads full of potholes and river crossings makes you nervous, consider joining a tour. That way you’ll be able to see places your small rental car can’t take you. You also have the added bonus of a knowledgeable guide to serve up local information and historical context.

For some people, a super jeep tour is a good option, with less personal risk and responsibility. But let’s say you want to drive your own car, on your own terms. Where do you go then?

Wild Places to Visit in Iceland with a 4x4 Yourself

The westfjords.

The Westfjords, located in the north-west of Iceland, are one of the least-populated areas, featuring just over 7,000 people. Very few of the tourists who visit the country make it up here.Even though there are paved highways to allow access to and from Ísafjörður, the region’s capital, many roads are still unpaved.

If you want to see some of the most incredible bird cliffs and extremely small settlements, visit the Westfjords. Most of the area’s income derives from fishing, but they cater well to the tourists who make it all the way up. You’ll have a good selection of hotels, BnBs and restaurants in Ísafjörður, although not so much in other parts.

The Highlands

The highlands are the interior region of Iceland, which is only accessible via the aforementioned gravel F-roads. Some of the best hiking trails are located here, and there are a few campsites to stay at as well. You’ll see multicolored rhyolite mountains, lava fields, volcanoes and natural hot springs. However, there will be limited access to supplies and fuel, so come well-prepared.

The Highlands of Iceland

Note that the interior of Iceland is only open for visitors in the summer, from and to specific dates. Check the weather forecast before taking a route that involves an F-road.

If there was recently heavy rain, some rivers may not be able to be crossed, even for the most well-intentioned of vehicles. Additionally, dress warmly, no matter the weather forecast of time of year.

The Eastfjords

The country’s largest forest is found in the Eastfjords, as is Iceland’s population of reindeer, which are curiously not native. While the Ring Road will take you alongside the beautiful fjords, you’ll have to leave it to fully explore them.

The shortcuts to various waterfalls often involve driving steep, winding cliff roads. As such, your car type should determine your route; a super jeep is not a must.

You’ll have no trouble finding food and accommodation at Egilsstaðir, the capital of the east of Iceland. But once you leave that small settlement, urban areas are few and far between so fill up your gas tank/charge your engine whenever you’re half-full, just in case.

The Diamond Circle

The Diamond Circle is the jewel of Iceland’s north when it comes to day trips. Several roads connect into a rough circle in the northeast of the country, encompassing some great sites. Do check our Diamond Circle guide . This includes Goðafoss and Dettifoss waterfalls, Lake Mývatn, Húsavík town, Ásbyrgi Canyon and Dimmuborgir lava field .

Iceland Super jeep trip: Godafoss

A large section of Iceland’s Diamond Circle is, at the time of writing, unpaved. Factor this into your travel time, because the going is always slower on gravel roads. At times, sections of gravel road may be closed due to maintenance or unsafe passage. Húsavík is a good place to start/end your trip, and has some of the best whale watching in Iceland.

Super Jeep In Iceland Vs a 4x4 Vehicle

In summary, a super jeep is not strictly necessary to travel through most parts of Iceland, and neither is a super jeep tour . Renting a super jeep in Iceland is more of a luxury, allowing you to maximize your space and comfort while driving. If that sounds good to you, by all means, hire a super jeep! It will certainly make driving those F-roads less nail-biting.

A 4x4 vehicle will nonetheless be well-suited to most rough roads in Iceland, without the need for a super jeep . One rule of thumb: the vehicle you drive is just as important as the way you drive. Take greater care on gravel roads, pay attention to signs and don’t take unnecessary risks. Make your journey as smooth as possible by planning a little in advance and not rushing.

For your own off-beat Iceland adventure, book your rental at Cars Iceland to guarantee you’ll have the vehicle type of your choice for your trip.
