MANGEKYO by DRUM TAO: Wadaiko drumming in Tokyo
One of Japan’s premiere taiko groups impresses at its own exclusive theater in Tokyo
Taiko drumming is something you have to hear - and see - in person to understand why it leaves so many in awe.
In the last several decades, the performance art known in Japan as wadaiko, literally meaning "Japanese drum," has become an iconic part of Japanese culture: huge thundering drums athletically attacked by muscular men wearing Edo Period outfits - or simply a loincloth for extra effect. Traditional taiko drums have been used throughout Japan for centuries, but a new modernization in the taiko world has catapulted the instrument from the esoteric rituals of Buddhist temples to the mainstages of international venues.
At just over 60 years old, even this relatively new artform is constantly evolving. And perhaps no other taiko group in Japan embodies the bleeding edge of "taiko" as a stage art more than the group DRUM TAO .
The first time I saw a video of DRUM TAO on the Internet, I was both impressed and a bit shocked. More often than not, taiko groups both in Japan and internationally generally approach their performance styles, costuming and staging in a way that evokes a mythos of taiko as an ancient, "traditional" artform.
Not so with Tao. Often clad in suits, black leather trench coats and elaborate, colorful costumes evocative of Cirque du Soleil in posters and teaser videos, gracing stages that seem more at home in a science fiction movie than your neighborhood temple, the group's members send a clear message: this isn't your grandfather's taiko.
With this image in mind, I was extremely curious to see Tao peform in real life.
At a venue called the Alternative Theater in Tokyo's Yurakucho neighborhood (not far from Ginza), the group stages a show they call MANGEKYO . With near daily performances, reasonable ticket prices, and signage and programs in both Japanese and English, it was clear that the group intended this show to be widely accessible.
Once the house lights dimmed, the show began with soft dancing lights all around the theater accompanied by a mysterious melody played on bamboo flute by a soloist in a flowing white gown. But it wasn't long until a loud boom reverberated across the room. Taiko drums never miss an opportunity to enter with a bang.
The group's members quickly arranged themselves with tight syncronization, dressed in stylish, Japanese-inspired but very modern outfits carrying portable okedo drums slung around their shoulders. The rhythms were fast, catchy and loud, but always in control. But perhaps even more striking was how they moved: always in sync and with the grace of trained dancers, but with a presence and confidence that really left an impression.
As the pieces changed, so did the stage. Custom-fitted with a projection mapping system, the theater itself became a part of the show, projecting images from crashing ocean waves to kaleidescopic shapes to a bamboo forest across the backdrop and walls. The digital art projections were designed by teamLab , an interdisciplinary group of artists and technologists behind popular exhibits such as "Borderless" in Tokyo's Odaiba and elsewhere around the world.
With almost every piece, the players' costumes changed as well, from hyper-futuristic asymmetric robes that seemed almost metallic, to silky dresses, to (as I'd eagerly awaited) spike-studded leather trenches. For particularly intense pieces, cast members weren't afraid to show off their muscles a bit, driving home just how physically demanding their performances were.
As the show continued, I was impressed to see that the cast didn't simply limit themselves to being a troupe of taiko drummers. Almost every member of the group had multiple talents they showcased on stage, from dancing to playing multiple instruments to incredible circus art performances.
The show bristled with restless energy and reveled in its fast-paced action and transitions.
When the 80-minute show finally came to an end, it was no surprise the audience quickly demanded an encore. Thankfully, the group was ready to deliver and pull out all the stops for their final number. Interestingly, audience members were actually encouraged to take photos and video during this short finale, which they readily enjoyed doing.
All in all, for me, MANGEKYO excitingly lived up to the "hype." The group doesn't apologize for its modern vision for taking taiko into the 21st century, but it also hasn't lost the heart of what makes taiko such a visceral, timeless, inspiring experience.

If you want to dig yourself into deep Japanese culture and have a fun and exciting moment at the same time, playing Japanese drum (“Taiko” in Japanese) is one of the best ways! Have you heard of Taiko??
Taiko is Japanese drum, one of the traditional instruments to creates Japanese folk music. Although the origin of Taiko itself came from outside Japan, after it was introduced to Japan through Korea and China in early 6th century, Taiko became one of the most important instruments to create the significant sound of Japanese folk music and traditional performing arts, and it’s been played for military action, theatrical accompaniment, and religious ceremony, etc for many centuries. Today, Taiko is most commonly played for traditional festivals as it creates the dynamic and powerful sound to boost up the excitements once people hear its sound.
Taiko is nowadays becoming a popular cultural attraction among foreign visitors as it’s one of the most remarkable and fascinating Japanese culture. And by listening to its powerful sounds, you can immerse yourself into Japanese folk music and feel deeply connected to Japanese history and culture through the rhythm and the strong vibration.
If you wish to explore the world of Taiko in Japan, one of the best ways is to watch live Taiko performance shows held at several locations in Japan by different organisations. You can enjoyed the powerful and groovy sounds of the drum as well as the dynamic and energetic movements of performers.
Or for more unique and immersive experiences, I’d highly recommend you to join one of the Taiko learning classes. Some of the performing groups in Japan open Taiko workshops for visitors to learn how to play Taiko and feel the excitements of the drum sounds directly by hands with no previous experience required.
TAWOO is a Japanese drum group who organises various activities related to Taiko such as Taiko class (TAWOO Taiko Dojo), performances, workshop and special program for children. TAWOO’s Taiko workshop is held occasionally at numbers of locations in Japan including Tokyo, and it would be the most accessible and convenient way to play Taiko for Taiko beginners.
I have recently joined a workshop in Tokyo hosted by TAWOO, and I’d like to share my first Taiko experience with my readers!
This time, the Taiko workshop was held at a venue in the east area of Tokyo. The spacious practice room was situated at the basement of the building, and when I arrived there were sets of drums placed in a circular shape. It was a group lesson with over 20 participants from with men and women of all age including small kids, and most of us had no previous Taiko experience before!
As the class begun, each of us stood in front of the set of two drums (large and small) and a pair of drumsticks. The class was led by the teacher JERA who is a member of GOCOO, a well-known Japanese drum group who performs shows across the world, and a few other members to support the workshop. The lesson started off from simply tapping the drum by the drumstick (called Bachi in Japanese), and gradually making beats and rhythms with two drums by following the teacher who livened up and encouraged us to beat the drums using our whole body. I personally thought beating the drum was actually a really good relaxation for body and mind to release stress and concentrate, and as the drum sound vibrates, you can feel the sound through the body and feel connected.
The teacher instructed us not only how to create the drum beat but also how to make the dynamic movements, shouting out loud and posing while playing drums. We went through several different verses, and the atmosphere in the room was heating up and becoming very energetic. More we create the beats together, I really started enjoying the class more and also felt connected with other participants. As the time went by, I noticed everyone smiled and feeling the joy of playing Taiko from the bottom of hearts.
It’s one hour lesson, and we only started from beating the drum randomly, but at the end of the class, we put verses together and managed to perform one whole Taiko session. When we complete the last performance at the very end of the lesson, it was pretty overwhelming and we enjoyed a feeling of accomplishment.
Through the lesson, I really thought Taiko lesson was a great way to immerse in Japanese culture, but it also felt amazing creating a thing (drum performance) with others as a group from one simple beat.
If you wish to have an amazing TAIKO experience with TAWOO just like I did, please check the information about TAWOO and their upcoming activities and events below!

How to Join the Taiko Class
TAWOO hosts Taiko classes regularly in Tokyo, but if you are travelling to Japan and wish to experience TAWOO’s Taiko lesson for a single session, it’s recommended to join their workshop which is held several times a month. Anybody who wish to join the workshop and learn how to play Taiko are welcome regardless of generation and nationality. The workshop is usually held in Japanese, but language would not be a big deal during the lesson. It’s really manageable without understanding the language as it’s more important to feel the vibes by motion and connecting to the sound by heart!

Exploring the limitless possibilities of the traditional Japanese drum, the taiko, Kodo is forging new directions for a vibrant living art-form. Since the group’s debut at the Berlin Festival in 1981, Kodo has given over 6,500 performances on all five continents, spending about a third of the year overseas, a third touring in Japan and a third rehearsing and preparing new material on Sado Island. Kodo strives to both preserve and re-interpret traditional Japanese performing arts. Beyond this, members on tours and research trips all over the globe have brought back to Sado a kaleidoscope of world music and experiences which now exerts a strong influence on the group’s performances and compositions. Collaborations with other artists and composers extend right across the musical spectrum, and Kodo’s lack of preconceptions about its music continues to produce startling new fusion and forms.

PRESS COMMENTS
“Traditional rituals recast as theater, and contemporary thoughts about ancient instruments both figure in Kodo’s performance, which includes ancient and modern compositions. Yet with tense, angular postures, with stylized, frozen gestures and, in one playful piece, with animal-like scampering and slithering, Kodo reminds its audience that, above all, its music is a matter of flesh and blood, wood and stretched skin. Kodo can raise the roof, but the group can also show extraordinary finesse.” —The New York Times
“Having spent some time with them, jazz drummer and composer Max Roach thinks of the Japanese drummers of Kodo as regular guys. On stage it’s another story – clad in sweatbands and loincloths, they are like percussionist kamikazes. You expect them to drum till they drop. ‘The technique they use to play percussion instruments is totally different from anything I’ve ever seen,’ he says… ‘They deal with that ‘visual sound’ more than anyone I’ve ever known.’” —The Village Voice
“Indeed, if there is such a thing as perfection in music, Kodo comes as near to it as any group in the world.” —The Boston Globe
“Superlatives don’t really exist to convey the primal power and bravura beauty of Kodo. … Throughout, the devil of it is the combination of the discipline of a surgeon’s scalpel with the primitive, muscular endurance of a cavalry charge. The speed and dexterity are as impressive as the physical tenacity is breathtaking.” —Chicago Tribune
“Balancing a deadly aggression with utter tranquility, their sound stretches from the lightest of rainfall to cataclysmic thunderclaps, from pleasant laughter to discordant fear and from silence to – just once here – a wall of sound, as high, frightening and impregnable as a mountain. Musicians, theatre directors and all interested in the sheer power of sound to feed emotions should take note.” —The Guardian / UK
“The spectator is crushed by their power and then suddenly, silence. Complete silence as if life had stopped in an instant, no applause, not even a breath. I have never seen a show where the audience was so close to suffocating. Don’t miss this, the sound of their drums will be engraved forever on your memory.” —Le Quotidien de Paris / FRANCE
Dynamic, electrifying vision ….Nothing will prepare you for the 1,000 lb. drum assault, the precise timing or the wall of sound. An essential experience.” —Time Out / UK

Matsumoto Grand Taiko Festival 2024
The sound and the fury
Each year on the last weekend in July the city of Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture, the "city of music", already renowned for its historic castle, adds to its fame by hosting the raw and elegant sound and fury that is the annual Matsumoto Grand Taiko (the art of traditional Japanese drumming) Festival. The rhythmic pulse of the city can be heard and felt over two days and nights through the passion of the drummers and the depth of power of the drums which they strike. Taiko groups from all over Japan come to Matsumoto to participate in the festival, which takes place throughout the city and within the grounds of Matsumoto castle.
The festival comprises, in addition to the castle, of multiple open air designated areas in different parts of the city, which play host to multiple taiko performances during the afternoon starting from 1:30pm. With groups from various parts of Japan performing, it is a pleasure to see the differences in regional styles as well as fluid combinations of showmanship and technical proficiency. Some groups are tremendously well drilled teams, while others are passionate community groups made up of kids, mums & dads, and grandparents. Regardless of their age or experience, all performers and performances are filled with the special precision, grace and passion unique to taiko. Each performance is an event in itself and all applause and words of congratulation are humbly received by the performers.
At 5:30pm, as the day gets longer and the sun begins to set, the festivities move to the main event stage inside Matsumoto Castle. No fee is charged and no ticket is required. A raised stage is constructed in the shadow of the castle where the performances take place from 5:30pm until approximately 9:00pm. An area of approximately 25m from the front of the stage is neatly divided into free-seating areas on the lawn. There is plenty of room to relax and get a good view of the stage and the castle. Beyond the lawn seating is a section of individual outdoor chairs organised into a gallery for those with difficulty sitting on the floor.
The atmosphere is wonderful. Young and old alike sit mesmerised, captivated by the intricacies of each performance, some of which take on a theatrical element with vibrant costumes and singing. Even the youngest of performers, of primary school age, hold themselves with great character and commitment to the performance. Moreover, as the sun sinks lower, pastel reds and oranges are thrown across the summer sky and clouds, and create an unreal effect as they are projected upon and contrasted with the famous white and black surfaces of the castle. Perhaps only if you are particularly sentimental, but at this time it is difficult not to appreciate the weight of history and marvel at the impressive visual and aural intersection of Japanese history and culture.
The programme begins with individual groups giving 2 or 3 performances each, building up throughout the evening. The penultimate performance is reserved for a professional taiko group (this year: Kodō (鼓童)) to take the stage and, as part of their showmanship, bring the performance into the crowd. The finale can only be described as a taiko tour de force with all groups joining each other on stage for a combined performance of raw power that exceeds even the wildest expectations. A blur of hands and drums from start to finish, each performer exhausts themselves in a union of fierce passion, rigour and enjoyment in the final performance of the night, which leaves the audience in an equal state of breathlessness. If you're lucky you might even be able to also catch a glimpse of summer fireworks in the distant night sky to cap off a special evening.
All the groups reassemble the next day, with a slight change, to repeat their sensational efforts. The groups are rotated so that those who performed in the castle during the previous evening will perform in the city's open-air areas and vice versa.
In its mythological origin story, taiko is said to have been born when the Shinto goddess Ame-no-Uzume danced wildly atop an empty sake barrel. An experience not to be missed, the festival and its historical setting within Japan's second oldest extant castle will certainly have you dancing to the beat of a different (taiko) drum.
