Take That (formed in 1990) is the most successful English boy band in UK chart history, specialising in their own style of pop balladry, the band hails from Manchester, England.

Band manager Nigel Martin-Smith in 1989 had a vision to create a youthful and highly appealing male singing group based on New Kids on the Block. Introduced to young singer Gary Barlow, Martin-Smith decided to design the group around Barlow’s talents, subsequently inviting Howard Donald, Jason Orange, Mark Owen and 16-year-old Robbie Williams. Originally performing under the moniker Kick It, Take That’s breakthrough came with a cover of the Tavares hit “It Only Takes a Minute”, followed by “I Found Heaven” and “A Million Love Songs”. Take That later released the album “Take That & Party” in 1992 which featured all of the hit singles theretofore released.

In 1993 the band released their second full-length album “Everything Changes” garnering generous amounts of popular appeal. The album peaked at No.1 and spawned six singles including “Pray”, “Relight My Fire” and “Babe”. Nominated for the Mercury prize the band saw some international esteem however wasn’t enough to break into the U.S. market.

On the wake of Take That’s third studio album “Nobody Else”, Robbie Williams came under some criticism from other band members for his drug use and was offered an ultimatum: sort himself out or hit the road. Williams chose the latter and Take That embarked on their first worldwide tour and released the album “Nobody Else” in America with Williams removed.

Sensing an opportunity to continue his solo careers in the shadow of artists like Elton John an George Michael, Gary Barlow and the group disbanded in 1996. Barlow’s debut solo single reached the No. 2 spot in the UK chart and Mark Owen began working on a solo album influenced by Paul Weller and Radiohead. In 1997 Robbie issued his solo album “Life Thru a Lens” which topped the charts as did his sophomore release “I’ve Been Expecting You” a year later.

In 2005 a new compilation of Take That hits “Never Forget - The Ultimate Collection” arrived which led to an ITV documentary where the band discussed things past. In late 2005 the post-Williams line-up announced they would tour around the UK in 2006 and released the album “Beautiful World”. The album shot straight to the No. 1 spot, sold over 2.8 million copies and is the UK’s 25th best selling album in chart history. The album was led by the single “Patience” which hit the No. 1 spot, the group’s ninth single to do so.

In 2008 Take That released their new single “Greatest Day” ahead of their fifth studio album “The Circus”. Like its predecessors the album broke many records and earned many awards, afterwards the band embarked on their Take That Present - The Circus Tour Live”.

Robbie Williams returned in 2010 with the single written by both Barlow and Williams entitled “Shame”. Subsequently the band released the single “The Flood” ahead of the group’s 2010 album “Progress”. In 2014 the group released the album “III” led by the No. 1 single “These Days".

Live reviews

Take That was A M A Z I N G! We had seats in Block 420, Row C, and had the BEST view we've ever had at the O2! The support band, All Saints, were quite good and a great introduction to how the stage in the middle worked and what our view would be like for the main act. We found by watching them that Take That wouldn't be little ants like we thought they would, we could in fact see them clearly. I cannot fault the start of the main act as it was just so good. The visuals were superb, and my mind was blown as I watched. As someone who is a die hard Take That fan and loves all of the new songs as well as the old, I stood up for nearly every song and got goosebumps all the time. The visuals again, throughout, were especailly good in the songs Giants, relight my fire and shine. Take That also did a medley of old or obscure songs in the middle, which was amazing for me, even though I was the only one standing up in Block 420! Their new dance song called 'Cry' really got the crowd hyped, as it was amazing to witness. Never forget and rule the world were beautiful, with phone flashlights illuminating the whole arena.

I also cannot fault the secruity, as it was like being in an airport and I felt very safe. However, we had to go to level 1 to get chips as there is not much vareity on level 4 and we do not like going to a big resturant on the ground floor before a concert.

My favourite songs live were: Cry, Shine, wonderland, it's all for you and rule the world.

Back in 2011 Take That played a stint of gigs at London’s Wembley Stadium. They were certainly impressive shows. Since their 2005 comeback the English pop group (it no longer seems fitting to describe them as a boy band) have been famed for the dramatic scale of their arena performances.

Take That drew upon their by-now vast repertoire of work. They had released no less than three studio albums since their much-anticipated comeback n 2005. Of course, the latest album and tour had been particularly exciting because it marked the belated return of Robbie Williams. The largely female crowd was an excitable screaming mass throughout the evening, letting out deafening yells, whoops and screams as the Take That four-piece opened with ‘Rule the World.’ Five songs later, Robbie Williams took to the stage to perform five of his own solo tracks. And then it was time for what we were all waiting for. THE ORIGINAL TAKE THAT LINE-UP PERFORMING TOGETHER. They began with ‘The Flood,’ the leading single of their 2010 album, ‘Progress’. Soon the reunited five-piece were transporting us back to the nineties with a fine rendition of ‘Want You Back’. Take That delivered an impressive spectacle of a performance. And with an encore featuring ‘Relight My Fire’ it would have been difficult to please their audience any more!

A nation went into mourning when boyband Take That announced their breakup in the mid 90s. However they delighted the devoted fanbase announcing a reunion in 2006 as they reappeared as a more mature, grown up band with a new approach to pop music. The tours have also changed with age, there and no more cheesy dance routines of the 90s videos and instead they have been replaced with more considered, sophisticated production values.

The fully reformed lineup took to Wembley stadium to delight fans with a barrage of dancers, lights, video interludes and an infamous illuminating elephant. With so much to focus on, you could review a Take That show without having to mention the incredible track list which includes mega-hits such as 'Relight My Fire' 'Never Forget' and 'Could It Be Magic'. The original reformed four piece also perform modern hit singles including 'Rule the World' and 'Patience' before Robbie arrives to play a number of his solo tracks including 'Rock DJ'. This show really is a masterclass in pop majesty.

What an absolutely wonderful time we had at Take That's Thursday night concert at Take That Arena.

Rick Astley was brilliant a trip right back to the 80s. I'd quite forgotten how many hits there were. Then bang up to date with some of his contemporary work. Great voice great music!!!

Then the boys landed!!!

The set and special effects were incredible. The lads worked so hard for over 2 hours and treated us to a catalogue of hits and routines from their previous tours. Even the outfits were authentic.

It was so fantastic to see such a show and be able to sing along to of the music.

Very hoarse today !

And a final surprise guest Lulu.

The little pocket rocket with the huge voice. Hasn't lost any of it!!

If you get the chance to see the tour my advise just do it.

We celebrated our wedding anniversary in style xxxxxx

I am a heavy metal fan who goes along with his wife to Take That concerts. Joy!

To be honest, Joy is the correct word to use. Take That always put on an excellent show and even thought it is so different from let’s say the upcoming Rammstein concert at the same venue I am so looking forward too in July, these guys show is exciting and so well presented that I found myself bopping like a 16 year old kid out on the kip for his first conquest. Loved it. I would say that of the 5 TT tours I have been to, this one rates second after the Circus show at Wembley all those years ago.

Well done lads. Loved it!

Yet again, a fantastic show. Take That never fail to entertain. They sounded fabulous, the stage was a masterpiece and Lulu was amazing! Rick Astley was the perfect set-up for the boys, getting everyone dancing and singing. The crowd were all in good spirits with everyone being friendly and polite to each other. It was an amazing tribute to the past 30 years with a real mixture of old and new songs. The guys may be 30 years older now but they ooze energy! Certainly my favourite gig since The Circus tour in 2009!!

The concert was stunning and amazing *-*

It was huge, even it was only the 'little' show of them.

Me and my friend both got a plec from Kevin, the best tour manager ever! And we never thought that Howard, Mark and Gary would look at us that much! All three of them looked at us several times and grinned when we grinned or laughed or winked or what ever. We botj saw that they have really much fun with that what they do! :)

This concert was just awesome! <3

Thank you for the great night! <3

Fabulous show!!. A million costume changes, loads of stage props and pyrotechnics fireworks ldancing girls and flames. All the hits were covered and appeared I went. Rick Astley is still as fab as he ever was though he did say" I'm 53 and knackered" lol. Surprise guest was Lulu . "Rule the world" a little tear ran down my face. All had our torches on and my dad's dear face on my phone was lit up like he was there. The stars are coming out tonight...for you Dad. He'd have loved it ❤

Take That will return on tour in two years, but which members will making a comeback with Gary Barlow?

Listen to this article

Gary Barlow has confirmed that Take That are getting back together and will go on tour in 2023.

He said that he will reunite with bandmates Mark Owen and Howard Donald for a series of live dates in a year's time.

  • Inside Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow's feud and friendship over the years
  • Take That's 6 most historic moments, from their 2006 reunion to Jason Orange's final performance
  • Where is Jason Orange now?

However, he had hoped to get Jason Orange back on board, but despite the group's attempts to convince him, the band are returning as a trio.

Robbie Williams will also likely be absent from the line-up, He returned to the group in 2010 and for some sporadic appearance here and there, but a full-time reunion is not on the cards.

Take That as a five-piece in 2011

Speaking to The Sun , Gary said: “Jason isn’t coming back. Take That is Mark, Howard and me for the next few years.

“By the time Christmas comes, it will be the end of a big chapter for me. I’ll have toured two albums and it’ll be the end of this solo chapter for me and I’ll be getting ready for the next wave of Take That.

“We’ll have a nice planning year in 2022. I don’t think we’ll release anything or tour, but the following year – 2023 – will be a big year for Take That.

"It’s been a while since 2019. I’m ready to get back to my day job now. That’s my thing, being in the group."

The last time Take That performed together was back in 2019, during their sold-out Odyssey: Greatest Hits Live Tour. Jason and Robbie also did not appear during that campaign.

Take That will return as a trio

After parting ways in 1996, Take That reunited to great fanfare in 2005, minus Robbie. Five years later, Robbie returned to the fold for the Progress album and tour, but they have not performed with Jason since their Olympics Closing Ceremony show in 2012.

Gary Barlow is currently on tour in support of his new festive album The Dream of Christmas , released this Friday (November 26).

Earlier this week, Gary unveiled his latest single - 'How Christmas Is Supposed To Be' - a duet with actor Sheridan Smith.

Although they were stylised initially as a classic boy band the Manchester-based quintet who wowed a generation from 1990 onwards were always far more than a customised or manufactured outfit. In Gary Barlow, they had – still have – a ready-made talent, a singer-songwriter of genuine ability who would be nobody’s puppet. The addition of Howard Donald, Jason Orange, Mark Owen and Robbie Williams added fortuitous completeness – here were five lads who could sing, dance and entertain the masses while offering classic teenage pop that filled arenas with screaming fans and shifted dizzying amounts of discs.  In time all five members would prove to be expert and commercial pop tunesmiths.

The most successful act of their era, Take That have thus far had 27 top 40 singles and 11 number one hits in the UK alone. Internationally the figures are far more impressive: 54 number one singles and 35 number-one albums. Their awards cabinet overflows with BRITS, Ivor Novello Awards and accolades connected to sales and career earnings. They are the most successful boy band in chart history but of course, they are no longer just that since their reunion tour of 2006 simply picked up where they’d left off and consequent minor shifts in the line-up haven’t diminished their pulling power or their draw as musicians. In a business where tastes change – everything changes – and pop music enjoys rapid shifts of name and fame Take That proves to be made of a far more durable metal than their competition.

The origins of Take That go back to 1990 when the entrepreneur Nigel Martin-Smith sought characters for a British male vocal troupe loosely fashioned as a British answer to New Kids on the Block. But once Gary Barlow appeared Martin-Smith realized he had something even better than a copycat idea – he had real talent. Once the other boys were in place TV shows were booked and the then fashionable blend of New Jack Swing and urban R&B were worked into a formidable act. Assiduous appearance gigs built a fan base with the relevant age group and after some test-the-water singles bubbled promisingly it fell to their debut album to make the auspicious breakthrough.

How To Write A Catchy Song: Anatomy Of An Earworm

‘e=mc2’: mariah carey’s 2008 album is a celebration.

The cleverly named Take That & Party was a revelation and captured the zeitgeist. It contained a string of hit singles: “It Only Takes a Minute”, “I Found Heaven”, “A Million Love Songs” and a cover of Barry Manilow’s “Could It Be Magic” (smart move since it drew in the mums and daughters) and would stay in the album charts for over a year with 2xPlatinum sales. Look out for it now on the Expanded release.  This is where they came in and it’s quite an entrance.

If that was Act One, then the follow up was and is a sensation. Everything Changes (1993) stormed the charts and won a Mercury Prize nomination while the stark fact was that this 4xPlatinum masterpiece also holds the record for the number of top 10 singles for a group plucked from one album in the UK. The whole thing was a roaring success from start – “Everything Changes” – to finish –  “Babe”. In between the Take That boys could bask in the brilliance of “Pray”, “Relight My Fire”, “Love Ain’t Here Any and “Why Can’t I Wake Up With You”, all written by Barlow with the exception of a cute cover of Dan Hartman’s “Relight…”  a choice that put the group in Michael Jackson territory. No point aiming low. Again, check out the Expanded version for extra mixes. And note that like The Beatles before them Take That made significant inroads into the major European markets of Germany, Italy and Holland. The mania was underway.

1995’s Nobody Else was their last before they shocked the world by disbanding for ten years but there was no let-up in quality and class. How could there be when “Sure”, “Never Forget” and the ultimate anthem “Back for Good” were in the can? Adding extra frisson to the control room Take That were joined by Jim Steinman and David Morales while Brothers in Rhythm added a house element that kept Take That on the dance floors at night and in the charts by day.

Momentarily gone but never forgotten the Greatest Hits would sell over 5 million copies thanks to the inclusion of everything one could want – from their cover of The Bee Gees “How Deep Is Your Love” to the US version of “Love Ain’t Here Anymore”. Recommending this collection is a no-brainer. It’s an instant party classic. Following Never Forget – The Ultimate Collection Take That reconvened as a four-piece for Beautiful World , minus Robbie Williams who was doing fairly well for himself elsewhere! No matter because the old Barlow magic hadn’t dimmed and they returned to their 1990s sound with a contemporary flair. Mark Owen helms the vocal on “Shine” – a very Manchester sounding piece while Will Malone adds some sparkling arrangements with the London Session Orchestra. The fans hadn’t forgotten and Beautiful World is as big as they get with 9xPlatinum sales and further tip-top hits via “Patience”, “I’d Wait For Life” and “Rule the World”. They ruled the airwaves again.

By now Take That have taken their original crowd along with them and the parent album for all these goodies is a constant source of delight.

The Circus (2008) is another stunning album. We heartily recommend immediate rediscovery for the epic “Greatest Day” alone – pop perfection personified. But it’s all good and doesn’t rely on nostalgia and goodwill to sustain it. Barlow has become a genuine contender in the ballad field and rivals Elton John and the old school singer-songwriters for immaculate melodic flair. That is backed up by the kind of reviews Take That get now when even highbrow publications sit up and notice of what they do and report on it favourably and fairly.

After the second coming, the hallelujahs ring loud for The Greatest Day –Take That Present: The Circus . Their first one of two live albums this captures them live at Wembley Stadium in summer 2009 and also in intimate close-up In Session at Abbey Road . Their last album as a quartet before Robbie Williams’ return this is a priceless document.

And so to Progress , and the return of the prodigal; Mr Williams, we’ve been expecting you. They could hardly fail with that news and they didn’t. Recording in New York, Los Angeles, and London and in Peter Gabriel’s Wiltshire facility they came back as if they’d never been away. The singles “The Flood”, “Kidz” and “Happy Now” accompanied a groundswell of interest that is manifest in the huge pre-release orders, the amount of airplay received and the Five Star across the board rave-up reviews. Check this out as the double-disc Progressed where their noteworthy modernity can be heard to full advantage on tracks like “When We Were Young” (sung by Robbie and Gary) and  “Love Love”) vocals shared with Gary and Mark). A fully rounded triumph, this disc puts Take That in the limelight again.

Progress Live is the perfect and obvious accompaniment, recorded before their natural fan base in London and Manchester in July 2011. Not only does this contain all the big That hits, it also finds time for a Williams section where his versions of “Let Me Entertain You”, “Angels” et al signal a true reunification.

And so to the immediate present and III  (2014), the group’s seventh studio album, arriving in time for Christmas. With production coming from Greg Kurstin (Katy Perry, Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen), John Shanks, Stuart Price and – amid much secrecy – Jeff Lynne, this was the most eagerly awaited album of the season.

An amalgamation of the last eight years of the band’s sound, the disc took its title from the reconfigured line-up, distilled to Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald. This holy trinity was more than capable of springing further surprises, to judge by the lead-off single “These Days”, and the shared credits on “Fall Down At Your Feet” and the exquisite and euphoric “Get Ready For It”, which sounded like a future smash.

Its follow-up, Wonderland , released in March 2017, is available in standard and deluxe editions, and to celebrate its release the boys will undertake a summer tour where they will be appearing in the round. Meanwhile, Mr Barlow continues his own high-profile multi-media career as the host of the talent show Let It Shine for the BBC. A new greatest hits set is also in the pipeline.

We’ll let you chew it over and make up your own minds. The smart money says Take That are back… for good? Watch this space. It’s just great to have them around again.

Fans think Take That will be reuniting with the FULL line-up after cryptic posts

Will they be back for good?

Take That fans around the world were left very excited recently after it seemed as if the band could be about to reunite with the FULL original line-up of current members Gary Barlow , Howard Donald, Mark Owen and former members Robbie Williams and Jason Orange .

Over the couple of weeks in particular, Take That's official social media accounts have been sharing old videos and photos of the original group of five. The most recent video to be uploaded by the group sees all five singing 'Never Forget' back in 2011 on their 'Progress' Tour.

They captioned their throwback video: 'Never forget we will have fun like this again… someday soon 💙'

Following this post, fans thought that 'someday soon', could be sooner than we think. One fan wrote: 'is this a hint, I wonder?', with another saying: '🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞 that would be a dream come true! 😍😍😍😍😍'.

Gary Barlow also shared a video of the band performing, adding more speculation that they could be reuniting soon, telling his fans: 'The lads ❤️'.

With Take That already set to appear at BST Hyde Park this year in July , fans were speculating that the full group could be set to reunite for the Coronation of King Charles III on 6th May.

After rumours have been swirling for a number of weeks that Take That could be due to perform at the special event, it has now been confirmed that the band (with the current line-up) will be performing over the Coronation weekend.

Now take a look through Take That's amazing career:

Starting with a line-up of five young men, Take That consisted of Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Robbie Williams, with the original (short lived) name of Kick It.

Take That's original line-up of Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Robbie Williams. Thankfully they changed their name and after a few unsuccessful songs in the early 90s Take That's breakthrough hit 'It Only Takes A Minute' was released. The song was a cover of a 1975 song by Taveres and reached number 7 in the charts.

In 1992 Take That had hits with 'A Million Love Songs' and 'Could It Be Magic'. The boys' follow-up single 'Could It Be Magic' quickly propelled them to super-stardom with a string of number 1s not far away.

Take That had huge success in 1993 with 'Pray', 'Relight My Fire' (featuring Lulu) and 'Babe'.

The band's success continued in 1994 with 'Everything Changes' and 'Sure'. Here they are performing at The BRITs 1994.

However, in July 1995 after countless hits, fans heard the devastating news; Robbie Williams would be leaving the band following friction with other band members. Robbie later admitted in a TV documentary in 2005, that he did some "stupid stuff" after parting ways with the band over 20 years ago, but said he didn't regret it because he was young.

The remaining members of Take That continued to perform as a quartet.

Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Mark Owen and Jason Orange performed at The BRITs in 1996. The remaining group of four continued to tour and release songs for another year, releasing 'Never Forget' and the Bee Gees cover 'How Deep Is Your Love', finally announcing they would be disbanding in February 1996. 'How Deep Is Your Love' became the band's final number 1 before they reformed 10 years later.

Late 90's

During the late 90s three of the band members, Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Robbie Williams, enjoyed solo singing careers with varying degrees of success. Jason Orange went into acting and Howard Donald, despite being the lead singer on a number of Take That songs, made a name for himself as a club DJ across Europe.

Skip nearly a decade and ITV reunited the group for a documentary called Take That: For the Record in which the former members of the boyband were interviewed, discussing how they were discovered and looking back at their experiences in the band.

Following the successful reception of the documentary by fans and the press, the decision was made to reunite with the 'post Robbie' line-up and a 2006 tour titled the 'The Ultimate Tour' was announced. After a break of nearly 10 years, Take That members Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Mark Owen and Jason Orange reformed in 2005.

Take That performed on The X Factor in 2006. In 2006 they had a Number 1 single with 'Patience'. Gone were the cheesy pop tunes of the 90s, Take That had grown up with their fans and the men, now in their 30s revealed a much more mature sound, with their 2006 comeback single 'Patience'. The song quickly hit the top spot in the UK and around Europe becoming the eighth best-selling single of 2006 spending a massive 11 weeks in the top 10.

In 2007 Take That embarked on their 'Beautiful World' tour. Since their reunion as a four-piece, it was clear that they hadn't lost the momentum they had in the 90s with another string of hits including 'Shine', 'Rule the World' and 'Greatest Day'.

After the release of fifth album 'The Circus' in December 2008, the boys headed out on their 'Take That Present: The Circus Live' tour to promote it - and what a spectacle it was! Tickets to the entire tour sold it in less than five hours, making it the fastest-selling tour in UK history.

Robbie Williams made an unexpected return to the group in 2010, joining forces with Gary Barlow - the first time since 1995 - writing a song that would feature on both Take That and Robbie's albums. Then, later that year, the news that all Take That fans had been waiting for was confirmed, the original line-up would be reforming for the wildly successful album, 'Progress' and its live tour. Their lead single 'The Flood' was released and peaked at number 2 featuring both Gary and Robbie as lead vocals.

Following the band's 'Progress Live' tour in 2011 they then decided to take a break.

A couple of years later Take That reformed as a group to record their seventh studio album, but it was short-lived, in 2014 both Robbie and Jason decided to leave. Robbie had recently become a dad for the second time and saying he would find it difficult "logistically". The band continued as a trio made up of Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen.

Take That returned earlier this year with their new album 'Wonderland' and their single 'Giants' which peaked at number 13. 'Giants' was written by the remaining three members of Take That along with some co-writers and the lyric video can be seen below.

After celebrating Take That's 30th anniversary in 2019, the band put out a Greatest Hits album called 'Odyssey', which featured song "re-imagined with new arrangements and production". It debuted at Number 1, and the group embarked on a huge UK tour in 2019.

Take That reunited with former member Robbie Williams for a very special performance in May 2020 during the lockdown amid the global pandemic of Coronavirus, performing a 40-minute set.

The band's musical film Greatest Day was confirmed in June 2020! Although it had been in the pipeline for a couple of years, things started to get in motion in the summer, which is based on the jukebox musical The Band, containing Take That songs.

November 2020

Gary released his fifth solo studio album on 27th November, 'Music Played By Humans', which debuted at Number 1 in the UK! It features singles 'Elita' featuring Michael Bublé and Sebastián Yatra, 'Incredible' and 'This Is My Time'. Other album tracks feature vocals from the likes of Beverley Knight, Alesha Dixon and James Corden among others.

On 7th October 2021, Gary surprised fans with the announcement that he was launching his own wine company. He shared photos from his new company Gary Barlow Wines on his social media.

In October 2021, Gary announced his first Christmas album 'The Dream Of Christmas' would come out on 26th November. The album includes new songs like 'How Christmas Is Supposed To Be' as well as Gary's take on some classic tunes. 'Sleigh Ride' and 'The Dream Of Christmas' were released on 28th October ahead of the album.

In January 2022, Gary Barlow announced he would be putting on a theatre performance show called ' A Different Stage ', with dates being added throughout the year.

2024 RBC Heritage Full Field: After the Masters, a Signature Event in Hilton Head

  • Author: John Schwarb

The post-Masters hangover is real.

If you’re reading this (and thank you), chances are you’ve been glued to your devices for days, watching every feed and taking in every piece of content around the year’s first major. There’s just nothing like Augusta National, whether you’re a fan or now-two-time champion Scottie Scheffler .

Now, sigh, we have to wait 51 weeks to do it again.

But on the bright side, most of the players you saw last week will be teeing it up again with barely enough time to run home for a change of clothes.

The RBC Heritage, the traditional week-after-Masters relaxation stop in Hilton Head Island, S.C., is a signature event. So the PGA Tour’s best will get another $20 million purse and elevated FedEx Cup points—and a plaid jacket, not a green one.

As tempting as it may be to catch a nap this Sunday, the 55-year-old event has delivered some great finishes in recent years. Matt Fitzpatrick won in a playoff last year over Jordan Spieth, and Spieth won the year before that over Patrick Cantlay.

Those three are all scheduled to play this week along with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, though the Masters champ may bail if wife Meredith goes into labor with their first child. Only Viktor Hovland is sitting this out among OWGR top-10 ranked players on Tour.

The venue is Harbour Town Golf Links, a change of pace from many weeks on Tour. The 7,213-yard par-71 layout off Calibogue Sound is tree-lined tight with tiny greens, requiring precision and a great short game. Players like Stewart Cink and Jim Furyk are no bombers but are among the champions who have won twice at Harbour Town.

Below is the full field courtesy of the PGA Tour. Keep an eye on this X post for field changes leading up to Thursday’s first round.

Solid-state batteries

Nissan steps up all-solid-state ev battery plans as pilot line construction kicks off.

Avatar for Peter Johnson

Will all-solid-state batteries be a “game-changer for EVs?” Nissan believes so. The automaker is accelerating all-solid-state EV battery development, hoping to make its electric models more competitive. Nissan kicked off construction on its all-solid-state EV battery pilot line this week with plans to introduce them in a wide range of models, including pickups.

Nissan preps for all-solid-state EV battery development

This week, Nissan showed off its all-solid-state battery pilot line at its Yokohama Plant. Under its Ambition 2030 strategy, Nissan plans to launch solid-state battery-powered EVs by early 2029.

By 2030, Nissan plans to introduce 19 new EVs with electrified vehicles (including hybrids) accounting for 55% of global sales.

A big part of Nissan’s strategy includes advanced battery tech. Nissan unveiled plans to launch EVs with all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) made in-house by fiscal year 2028. Nissan says it can introduce better-performing EVs across more segments with ASSBs.

Nissan believes the new tech will be a “game-changer for EVs,” with the potential to offer twice the energy density of traditional lithium-ion batteries at a lower cost.

Nissan also believes solid-state batteries can reduce charging times by one-third. The company is involved in “wide-ranging research and development,” including molecular-level material research.

Nissan-all-solid-state-EV-battery

Using this info, Nissan is stepping up development with plans to introduce the new tech at mass scale.

Since launching the LEAF in 2010, Nissan’s Yokohama Plant has been producing electric motors. However, the plant’s biggest transformation is underway.

In October, Nissan unveiled the Hyper Force EV concept. Powered by all-solid-state batteries, Nissan claims the electric supercar can crank out up to 1,341 hp (1,000 kW).

Nissan-all-solid-state-EV-battery

With a shrunken Tesla Cybertruck-like feel, the exterior was designed with its NISMO racing team for maximum aerodynamics.

Nissan doesn’t refer to it as an electric GT-R, but you can see the blurred-out logo up front. The automaker hinted its electric supercar could launch by 2030.

Nissan-electric-truck

Electrek’s Take

Nissan isn’t the only one planning to introduce solid-state batteries in its next-gen EVs. Japanese rival Toyota is also planning to launch advanced batteries.

However, Toyota has promised to launch solid-state battery-powered EVs several times now. Its first was due in 2021, then 2022, and mass production isn’t expected until after 2030.

Toyota claims its next-gen batteries will offer a 10-minute fast charge and significantly more range. Two versions are expected: a 621-mile (1,000-km) WLTP range and a further evolution 750-mile (1,200-km) model.

This could allow Nissan to get ahead. Meanwhile, several other companies, such as Volkswagen, Hyundai, and BMW, are advancing their plans.

Chinese EV makers are already rolling out advanced battery tech. For example, pre-orders for NIO’s new ET7, powered by a 150 kWh semi-solid state battery, opened today.

NIO is holding an endurance challenge to see if the luxury electric sedan can break CEO William Li’s 650-mile (1,044-km) range record.

Nissan, and other legacy automakers will need to get moving to prevent falling further behind.

2024 Masters one and done picks, DFS lineups, sleepers, fantasy golf projections, longshots by PGA expert

Mike mcclure locked in his expert pga golf picks, daily fantasy lineups, fantasy golf projections and sleepers for masters 2024 at augusta national.

scheffler.jpg

The 2024 Masters gets underway on Thursday from Augusta National Golf Club at 10:30 a.m. ET, a two-and-a-half hour delay due to storms. No golfer around the world is playing better right now than World No. 1, Scottie Scheffler. The 2022 winner of this event, Scheffler won the elevated Arnold Palmer Invitational in March and again the following week at the Players Championship. He then nearly won for the third straight tournament, missing a putt on the 72nd hole to force a playoff at the Houston Open. The tee-to-green specialist gained 17 strokes on the field when he won here in 2022 and will try to continue his torrid run. Given his run of dominant play, should Scheffler be the top choice when constructing your 2024 Masters DFS picks, 2024 Masters fantasy golf rankings, and 2024 Masters one and done strategy? Before locking in your 2024 Masters one and done picks, Masters DFS lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel, and fantasy golf projections, you need to see what SportsLine DFS pro and PGA expert Mike McClure has to say .

McClure is a DFS legend with over $2 million in career winnings, and he's been red-hot on his PGA picks dating back to the PGA Tour restart in June of 2020. McClure uses his proprietary simulation model to analyze the field and crush his  golf picks . He is up almost $9,500 on his best bets since the restart.

McClure's model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scottie Scheffler winning in 2022.

McClure has been on fire with his One and Done picks in 2024. At The American Express, he backed Justin Thomas, who finished in third place and took home $635,600. At the Genesis Invitational, McClure tabbed Patrick Cantlay, who finished in fourth place at the signature event, as his top OAD pick. At the Cognizant Classic, McClure's top one and done pick, Min Woo Lee, finished in a tie for second place. Finally, at the Arnold Palmer Invitation, another signature event, McClure recommended using Scheffler and Will Zalatoris. The result: Scheffler won the event by five strokes, and Zalatoris finished in fourth place.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed McClure's picks has seen massive returns.

Now, McClure has dialed in on the 2024 Masters golf tournament and just locked in his one and done picks, DFS projections and Fantasy Golf predictions. They are a must-see for any player looking for an edge. You can only see McClure's Masters 2024 one and done picks, DFS lineups and Fantasy Golf plays at SportsLine .

Top 2024 Masters One and Done picks

One of McClure's top One and Done picks for the Masters is Brooks Koepka. Though his recent form hasn't been overly impressive, with only one top-10 finish in 2024, Koepka is a 'big game hunter' who thrives in major tournaments. In his last five Masters Tournaments, the American has two second place finishes and a seventh.

The winner of last year's PGA Championship, Koepka has four wins and 12 top-10 finishes in his last 21 majors. With a green jacket because his most treasured goal going forward, Koepka is a viable play again at Augusta. McClure is once again confident in the five-time major champion's chances this week.  You can see who else to back at SportsLine .

Top 2024 Masters DFS picks, lineup advice

One golfer McClure is targeting in his 2024 Masters DFS lineups is Justin Thomas. The 15-time PGA Tour winner has long been considered one of the top ball-strikers and irons players in the world and has a proven track record of success in big events. Thomas has two career major championships and six top-25 finishes in eight career starts at Augusta National.

Thomas' ability to card birdies and eagles makes him standout among the field when building Masters DFS lineups. He enters Masters week ranked sixth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained on approach (0.795) and 12th in strokes gained tee-to-green (1.124). After a disappointing 2023 season, Thomas has bounced back with four top-12 finishes already in 2024.  You can see the rest of McClure's Masters DFS picks at SportsLine .

Top 2024 Masters Fantasy Golf picks, projections

One of McClure's top fantasy golf picks is Scottie Scheffler. He's won eight times in the last 26 months and been No. 1 in the world for the last 47 weeks in a row (81 total). You'll pay a premium for Scheffler and he'll be highly rostered in Masters DFS tournaments as well as the first player off the board in any draft format, but that's a price you should be willing to play considering how dominant he's been of late.

Scheffler has two wins and a runner-up finish over his last three starts, which happens to coincide with a putter change that has helped make him nearly a tour-average putter. Considering that he's already the world's best ball-striker (2.798 strokes gained: tee-to-green per round), his game could be elevated. Scheffler has never finished worse than 19th in four starts at Augusta and the 2022 Masters champion is a +325 favorite (bet $100 to win $325) in the 2024 Masters odds.  You can see the rest of McClure's Masters fantasy golf picks at SportsLine .

How to make Masters 2024 picks, long shot bets

McClure is also targeting targeting six other golfers with odds of 20-1 or longer who will make a strong run at the green jacket. You can find out who they are, and check out all of McClure's Masters picks and best bets at SportsLine .

Little Big Town and Sugarland Collaboration on CMT Awards Wasn’t a One-Off: LBT Members Talk Covering Phil Collins for Joint Single, Plus Fall Tour

little big town sugarland joint tour take me home single

For the group’s 25th anniversary, Little Big Town is pouring some sugar on it. Some Sugarland , actually, as the two country groups will be spending some quality time together later this year, in the wake of their joint performance Sunday night on the CMT Music Awards , where they hooked up to sing their newly arranged cover of Phil Collins ‘ 1985 smash “Take Me Home.”

Popular on Variety

There’s a throwback element to the new single and tour, as well as Sunday’s CMTs appearance: The two groups toured together in the late 2000s, and they sang a cover of the Dream Academy’s “Life in a Northern Town” (then joined by Jake Owen as well) on the 2008 show that at the time went under the name of the CMT Flameworthy Awards.

Backstage at Austin’s Moody Center during CMT Awards rehearsals, the four members of Little Big Town sat down to discuss with Variety their feelings about reuniting with their old vocal-harmony pals.

The tour plan preceded choosing which song to do together, says Karen Fairchild. “When we were on the road together years ago, we would really learn songs in the afternoon and then sing ’em,” she recalls. “Like, if we were in Memphis, we’d do ‘Walking in Memphis.’ So it was just something fun that we did on the road. So when this tour was gonna be announced and we were gonna get to do a song, then it was like, what do we do? And this song was Kristian Bush’s (of Sugarland) idea. and then we decided that we should get in the studio, because it sounded so good, and make it our own.”

There’s a more personal, if slightly indirect, connection as well. “We should tell you: Akil Thompson that plays in the band — he’s on keys, but he plays everything — his dad is Chester Thompson. Well, Chester, created the drum part on this. There are so many followers of drummers of just his part on that, on YouTube. So that’s why there’s so many drums out there on the CMTs stage — because Hubert (Payne, the group’s drummer) is channeling his inner Chester Thompson… with Akil sitting next to him. Akil showed us a picture of himself standing side-stage at a Phil Collins concert, watching his dad play on this song, so it’s kind of a full-circle moment for him.”

There is plenty of full circling happening now with the Little Big Town/Sugarland reconnection, which couldn’t have happened that many times in other recent years, since the latter duo’s Jennifer Nettles and Bush have been pursuing solo activities more than band work for the most part.

Says Fairchild, “We used to hang out with them because we went to see them open up for Brooks and Dunn, and we played cards one night, and then we just became fast friends.” Although LBT has been in existence as a unit slightly longer, Sugarland broke big in country first, so she tells a story of Nettles and Bush being helpful as they struggled.

“We ran into them again at a festival, back in the day when we were broke and we didn’t have any gear. The guys were locked down on wired packs and we really wanted to invest in some wireless packs — ad this seems really silly now, but back then that was an important thing; we didn’t have any freedom to move around the stage. Sugarland had just had their first big No. 1 or something. And they bought us wireless packs — gave ’em to us and said, ‘Just pay the kindness forward.'”

Says Westbook, “They were so sweet, and I know they felt like they were investing in in our future and helping us out, because they know what that means.”

“And then they bought us wardrobe cases!” adds Fairchild. “And then we gifted those wardrobe cases to Old Dominion, but they kept our names on there, so the guys had Kimberly, Karen, Phillip and Jimi on their wardrobe cases. They just gave those cases away — I don’t know who they gave the old ones to — but we’re trying to just keep the tradition going.”

As for their collaborating now… four-part harmony is hard enough. Isn’t six-part harmony going to be tougher?

They laugh. There isn’t quite so much of that, in actuality, as usually someone is singing a lead vocal that doesn’t have to fit in with the background parts. “The great thing about that is, there’s so many like ad libs in this song,” Schlapman says. “The rest of us keep the harmonies going while the ad libs also go along, so that’s where the six voices come in really handy.” But, as CMT Awards viewers say, all six members of the two groups got in at least a little lead-vocal time as the song went on.

The concluding night of the tour at Nashville’s big arena will mark the first time Little Big Town has headlined in Music City since a multi-night residency at the Ryman in 2017.

“With COVID, we didn’t plan on staying away that long,” says Fairchild. “But touring in the last few years, we did play there with George Strait, but yeah, we have not headlined anything until this Bridgestone show coming up. And that’s gonna be the last night of the tour. So it’s gonna be a party.” Chimes in Schlapman: “Katy-bar the door.”

After the CMTs, Fairchild was trying to figure out how to stick around Austin long enough to get in some vintage clothes-shopping, as is her habit when visiting the city. “This is one of my favorite places to shop, and I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to do that because they have us pretty busy. The vintage shopping here is phenomenal. I could stay and watch the eclipse, I guess, and shop.”

It’s suggested that she could shop in the dark, during the blackout. “She brought a headlamp,” quips Westbrook.

“Spelunking?” says Fairchild. “No, shopping.”

Take a closer look at the plans for the main regions of Neom, Saudi's epic megacity project

  • Saudi Arabia is plowing on with its ambitious Neom project, despite reported setbacks.
  • The Kingdom has said "millions of cubic meters of earth and water" are being moved each week.
  • Here's a closer look at the main regions that officials plan to build as part of the project.

Insider Today

Saudi Arabia 's futuristic and highly ambitious Neom megacity has been billed by officials as a place where people can "dream big."

First announced in 2017, Neom is being constructed in Tabuk, located on the northern tip of the Red Sea.

In February, the Kingdom released a promotional video sharing updates on Neom's progress. The video claimed the project was "progressing rapidly," adding that "millions of cubic meters of earth and water" were being moved each week.

Denis Hickey, the chief development officer for The Line, said: "We've done a lot of the foundation work literally and figuratively. We are ready to go. I think the construction of The Line is unique in terms of its industrialization and its modularized approach."

"We think there's an opportunity to create a better model for a city to interact with the landscape and nature and the environment and we think The Line is going to be an example to the rest of the world," Hickey said.

The kingdom has been funneling money into the 26,500 km² megacity, with costs projected to reach around $1.5 trillion for the development . The Line — a key part of the project — was planned to be finished by 2030, but recent reports suggest developers may be facing financial difficulties.

In February, The Wall Street Journal reported that Saudi Arabia was borrowing to help fund an array of ambitious projects, including Neom. A month later, Bloomberg reported that the Gulf kingdom has significantly reduced estimates for the number of people expected to settle in The Line .

Neom is the flagship project of the Vision 2030 plan announced by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Saudi wants its Vision 2030 projects to boost residency, provide better opportunities, and help the nation diversify beyond fossil fuels — but it remains to be seen whether expectations will match up with reality.

Neom is designed to comprise several regions. Here's how officials say the city will be laid out.

The Line is the most well-known section of Neom.

Officials say the city is set to be contained within two 1640-foot-high mirrored skyscrapers positioned 656 feet apart. According to Neom's website, the city will have no roads, cars, or emissions and run on 100% renewable energy.

The city was originally planned to accommodate nine million people by 2030. However, Bloomberg reported that this estimate was recently downgraded to less than 300,000 people by the same deadline.

US studio Morphosis is reportedly working on the glossy city, with several more architects on board to design smaller sections .

Related stories

Several e xperts have raised ethical issues about the city, claiming it could be fitted with Chinese technology to gather data on residents as part of a sweeping surveillance program.

Located on the coast of the Red Sea, Neom officials have announced plans for an octagonal city, which they claim will house a "next-generation" sustainable port.

If completed, the plan is for Oxagon, as it's being called, to spill partly into the sea, with a section set to float above on the shore. Neom officials have made the bold claim the floating part of the city will be the "world's largest floating structure."

Planners have also claimed the city will cover 48km² and house 90,000 people by 2030, as set out in the Vision 2030 plans .

Saudi officials claim Sindalah, a luxury island resort, will be the first region of Neom to be completed.

Developers have said they want the island to act as an "exclusive gateway to the stunning Red Sea," adding that they planned to welcome the global yachting community and luxury visitors.

The resort is set to feature several luxury spots, including a beach club, a spa and wellness center, and a yacht club.

Located in the mountains of the Tabuk region, Trojena has been designed to be Neom's ski and adventure resort.

Neom's website says the region will host 36 km of ski slopes. The site is also aiming to generate 10,000 jobs, per Neom's promotional site.

Saudi plans for Trojena to play host to 700,000 tourists annually by 2030.

The Gulf Of Aqaba

Saudi plans for the Gulf of Aqaba coast include several of Neom's main tourist destinations, including Epicon.

Plans for Epicon include an "ultra-luxury" hotel and resort and include a residential offering. Official statements say it will feature two towers, one 738 feet tall and another 902 feet tall.

If completed, the Gulf of Aqaba will include Leyka, a natural valley with three boutique hotels; Xaynor, an exclusive beach club; Siranna, a "luxury hospitality experience," and Aquellum, a community built inside a 1,476-feet high mountain range.

There are plans for the region to also host several other luxury escapes and wellness retreats.

Satisfaction Way: Glendale renames street for Rolling Stones concert at State Farm Stadium

take that tour line up

Glendale, Arizona, is taking a page from its Taylor Swift playbook .

The city is ceremonially renaming a portion of 95th Avenue in Westgate Entertainment District Satisfaction Way in honor of the Rolling Stones ' concert on Tuesday, May 7 , at State Farm Stadium.

On Monday, April 15, Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers proclaimed May 7 to be Ruby Tuesday. He read the proclamation at a news conference that featured students from the School of Rock getting their ya-ya’s out on a cover of “Sympathy for the Devil.”

The mayor then boarded a cherry picker and was lifted up to uncover the Satisfaction Way sign.

Unlike any other street sign in the city, this one has the "Hackney Diamonds" update of the Stones' iconic tongue-and-lips logo.

Why Glendale is renaming a street for the Rolling Stones

If you're wondering why they're making all this fuss around a concert by the Rolling Stones in 2024, there are several reasons.

“This is the first act ever to bring three separate stadium tours to State Farm Stadium and Glendale,” City Manager Kevin Phelps says.

Plus, as city spokeswoman Sue Breding notes, they are "the world's great rock 'n' roll band."

Phelps himself is a bit of a Stones fan, having seen one of their earliest stadium shows in 1981 at the Kingdome in Seattle.

“When you think about how long ago 1981 was, I think it’s remarkable just the longevity and the fact that they’ve been able to span multiple generations of the same family who follow the music,” Phelps says. “I think it’s really unique.”

Mayor Weiers was thrilled to be involved in honoring the Rolling Stones.

"I grew up with the Stones," he says.

"I don’t think there’s too many people alive who don’t know who the Rolling Stones are. And whether you love them or not, you can’t argue the fact that they are one of the most — if not the most — popular rock ‘n’ roll bands ever. They cut across a lot of different groups of people. And how do you not like a guy who’s still performing more than 60 years later. It’s pretty incredible."

The Stones last played the stadium in 2019, a sold-out date on their No Filter Tour.

State Farm Stadium general manager Andy Gorchov says, "We are thrilled to be hosting The Rolling Stones for a third time. This marks another exciting addition to our lineup of prestigious events, reaffirming our commitment to delivering unforgettable experiences to fans.”

The Rolling Stones agreed to Glendale using their iconic logo

The Rolling Stones were very agreeable to allowing the city to use their logo on the sign for Satisfaction Way, which stretches from Camelback Road to Glendale Avenue.

“When I first got to Glendale, we typically would try to reach out to artists coming in and we would have to do a lot of arm-twisting just to get them involved in any kind of additional promotion or opportunity,” Phelps says.

That’s before the Swift City campaign the city rolled out in honor of Taylor Swift launching The Eras Tour with two performances at State Farm Stadium in 2023, for which the city won a national marketing award.

Ruby Tuesday will be celebrated all along Satisfaction Way. You've got the concert to the south, of course. But on the north end, merchants in the Westgate Entertainment District will have special Ruby Tuesday offerings, ranging from Pour Some Brown Sugar on Me Wings at Shane’s Rib Shack to Paint it Black punch at Johnny’s Chicken & Waffles.

Phelps says the city has been very “entrepreneurial” in how it tries to leverage these opportunities.

“I think it’s important to understand why we’re doing this,” Phelps says. “The main reason is that there’s been this shift from just being a concert to now being an event. And that event is now going longer. People are staying in hotel rooms overnight.

"So part of what we’re doing, having fun with promoting the artist coming to Glendale, is just to remind them this is special, take some time off of work, come in and don’t just spend a few hours but maybe spend a few days here in Glendale.”

Glendale has done similar campaigns for Guns N' Roses, Taylor Swift

The first campaign Phelps recalls doing was for a Guns N’ Roses concert in 2016 . Glendale renamed itself Paradise City for that one.

At the time, he recalls, “it was hard to get the band and the manager engaged in that campaign.”

How does the city go about deciding when a concert rises to the level that suggests this type of campaign?

“We’re looking for that unique component to it,” Phelps says. “State Farm Stadium has been very successful the past couple years at bringing a whole host of artists that have filled up the stadium.”

'You don't want to hand out a thousand keys to the city'

There needs to be an angle, whether it’s a tour launch or the Stones becoming the first band to bring three separate tours to State Farm Stadium.

“You can go to the well too often,” Phelps says. “You don’t want to hand out a thousand keys to the city.

"But I would say this: We probably won’t force-feed what we can do as a city to help promote an event. It’s going to take a partnership with us and the artist and their management.”

The Stones were willing to lean into it and get creative, including allowing the use of their iconic lips logo.

“That really showed us that they were willing to assist us and it wasn’t just, ‘What can you do for us?’" Phelps said.

"It was, ‘How can we help you really have some fun with this?’ I think in the future, we’ll need to have that kind of partner. And then as long as we continue to show success with these types of campaigns, I think it’ll be easier to get the artist engaged.”

How Satisfaction Way is helping Glendale build its brand

To Phelps, this represents a long-term vision for the future of the city.

“This is helping the city of Glendale to build its brand around the Entertainment District,” Phelps says. “We’re putting this effort in to help our merchants and our hotels in the area really leverage what we’re doing. I’m just fortunate to have a really creative team in our media department that really thinks out of the box on this stuff.”

The Rolling Stones' Hackney Diamonds Tour comes to Glendale on Tuesday, May 7. Doors open at 6 p.m. Music starts at 8.

State Farm Stadium is a cashless venue with a clear bag policy. Tickets are available at SeatGeek.com .
