Welcome to Swift City: When Taylor Swift comes to town, businesses build new bars, prepare thousands of cookies, and welcome over 150,000 Swifties

  • Taylor Swift's highly anticipated, record-breaking "Eras Tour" kicks off Friday.
  • Glendale, Arizona, which hosts the first two dates, has renamed itself Swift City in her honor.
  • In Glendale, hotels are booked, businesses are making more room, and the cookies are flowing.

Insider Today

Welcome to Swift City, population 250,000 — plus over 100,000 Swifties.

Usually, it's known as Glendale, Arizona, but the city hosting the kick-off show for Taylor Swift's "Eras Tour" has fully embraced Swiftsanity, renaming itself Swift City for Friday and Saturday .

"One of my jobs is to promote my city by being a cheerleader. This ceremonial renaming of Glendale doesn't cost the taxpayers," Mayor Jerry P. Weiers of Glendale said in a statement to Insider. "And it shows that we're serious about our sports and entertainment district, while having fun at the same time."

It's sure to be fun, but it's a lot of work: An estimated 150,000-Swiftie swarm means local businesses are stocking extra ingredients, bringing on more staff, and planning themed events.

Swift's tour is already record-breaking, selling over 2 million tickets on Ticketmaster alone the first day they were available . Now that Swifties have faced hours-long queues, hefty resale prices, and the twists and turns of trying to get tickets to spring's hottest tour, they're ready for it — and to spend their money.

Glendale is no stranger to big events. You may remember it hosted the Super Bowl last month. This time around, fans are enchanted to see the singer, songwriter, and director kick off her first tour since 2018, and local businesses are preparing for an influx of Swifties. It's a microcosm of the huge economic power that the estimated $570 million Swift business wields .

"The beginning of The Eras Tour puts the City of Glendale in the national spotlight again a month after Super Bowl LVII," Weiers said. "We are expecting more than 150,000 Swifties to visit our sports and entertainment district for meals, the concerts, and a hotel room."

Morgan Milardo, the managing director of the Berklee Popular Music Institute , which focuses on the touring industry, told Insider that the influence of concertgoers perusing little businesses, like thrift stores, was "just huge."

"It just really positively impacts the local economy," Milardo said. "In addition to all the concertgoers, these huge tours, they oftentimes are amazing spectacles and incredible productions, and it requires local support from local unions and production vendors."

Booked out hotels, brand-new bars, and thousands of cookies

While concertgoers may not want to stray from the entertainment district to hit a dive bar on the east side , local eateries near the stadium are preparing for the influx of Swifties — and ready to quench their thirst.

Then Burger , which is all booked up, is hosting a pre-party and moving furniture out to accommodate more people. It's setting up a satellite bar and ordering more alcohol. Expect some custom Swift cocktails and playlists. It'll also have more servers and hosts working.

"I'm excited for it to be busy and excited to make money," Kayla Bybee, a host at Then Burger, told Insider.

Meanwhile, Crumbl Cookies in Glendale is ensuring its fridges are full and will stay full throughout the weekend. Chyna Murphy, its manager, said that it would have more workers than usual and was gearing up to sell thousands of cookies.

During a recent Carrie Underwood concert, Crumbl sold about 1,500 cookies in one day, Murphy said. It's anticipating selling between 3,000 and 5,000 cookies during Swift's weekend.

"It takes a lot for us to prepare, but we always have it under control," Murphy said.

Danielle Dutsch of the Glendale Convention and Visitors Bureau said there were "a ton of people here." Hotels are at capacity, restaurants are bustling, and Glendale is anticipating a lot of foot traffic.

"We've got folks that will travel far and wide to see Tay Tay," Dutsch said. "It's just mind-blowing to know this amazing woman can come and help us from an economic-impact standpoint by just being here."

Dutsch herself is feeling the trickle-down effect of Swiftmania: During her lunch breaks and late nights at the office, she's heard Swift practicing in the nearby stadium.

On the day the tour was announced, in the fall, the Holiday Inn Glendale sold out, according to a representative. But it's stocked and prepared, the rep told Insider. The Super Bowl and years of Arizona's peak tourism season were good practice. TownePlace Suites in Glendale has been booked out since about the start of March, according to a worker. The people calling in for reservations now are too late.

The Hampton Inn & Suites in Glendale is also booked solid from Friday to Sunday, as are Home2 Suites and Tru by Hilton. Meanwhile, at the Renaissance Phoenix Glendale Hotel & Spa, you might be able to secure one of the few rooms remaining — for $1,500 a night.

Usually, a room there will run you about $300 to $400, Tony S, who works at the Renaissance, said. The Swift-adjusted rates are comparable to the prices at the hotel during the Super Bowl, which were in the $1,600 range, according to Tony.

At the Renaissance, "we welcome" Swifties, the Renaissance worker said.

"Now, Glendale is Swift City, so we welcome them with open arms," he added.

Taylor Swift review, Arizona: On the first night of her Eras tour, Swift seems as liberated as she’s ever been

When Taylor Swift released her second album, Fearless , back in 2008, she was a bright-eyed singer-songwriter hoping to make it big in Nashville. Fifteen years later, it’s evident that she’s made it big everywhere. “I don’t know how it gets better than this,” the 33-year-old sings to a stadium of 70,000 people. Every last one of them shares the sentiment.

The five years since Swift’s last tour have been among her most prolific. She’s made four additions to her “family” of albums: 2019’s Lover , 2020’s Folklore and Evermore, and 2022’s Midnights . At the same time, she’s been busy re-recording her first six albums as part of her plan to reclaim the master recordings, following a very public battle with her former record label.

Her “Eras Tour” was designed as a journey through that staggering back catalogue of 10 albums, from her earlier country twang on her self-titled debut to the shift to synth-pop on 1989 , then to the subdued folk and alt-rock of Folklore and Evermore . Throughout the opening night of the tour, it frequently feels as though the audience is being caught up with Swift’s past, present and future. In the 44-song setlist that spans three hours and 15 minutes, she shows why the “era” concept is so integral to who she is. Each chapter marks a specific shift in her artistry.

There’s a palpable elation at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Costumes are emblazoned with hand-painted lyrics; faces are bright with glitter; hands are covered in Swift’s lucky number 13. The fans I speak to say the concert feels like “coming home”. Swift herself admits to feeling a little overwhelmed: “I’ll be trying to keep it together all night.”

Plenty of Swift’s biggest hits make it onto the setlist, of course, but there are surprises, too. Like the fact that she opens on “Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince”, the hazy synth-driven track from Lover , inspired by Swift’s political disillusionment. On it, she cast herself as a high school student dealing with bullies as an allegory for the right-wing gaining power in the US, and the heartbreak and despair that came with it. Deeper album cuts appear in the form of “Illicit Affairs”, the haunting track on which Swift battles her inner emotions, and a striking acoustic version of “Mirrorball”, which she dedicates to her fans. Later, they get the chance to scream-sing along to some of her most cutting lyrics on “Vigilante S***” (“I don’t dress for women/ I don’t dress for men/ Lately I’ve been dressing for revenge”).

  • U2, Songs of Surrender review: These elevator muzak versions of past hits are a faux-hipster slog
  • Miley Cyrus, Endless Summer Vacation review: A lovely, long bask in the pop star’s maturing talent
  • Taylor Swift’s ‘All of the Girls You Loved Before’ seems to be a love letter to all of Joe Alwyn’s exes

Each era transition is marked by both a costume and set change. “Look What You Made Me Do”, the 2017 single that heralded her return after a lengthy hiatus, sees different versions of Swift inside glass boxes: a nod to a time when she grappled to reconcile her sense of self with her public image. For songs from the autumnal, insular Folklore and Evermore, the stage is overtaken by trees and a cosy, moss-covered cabin. At one point, the stage is bare aside from a long wooden table that she arranges for two people. It’s sparse and cold, reflecting the stark sound of “tolerate it”, where she pleads for another person’s attention.

It’s telling that Swift closes on “Karma”, a tongue-in-cheek nod to how she ultimately rose above the tabloid headlines, feuds and rivalries that once circled her like vultures. Dressed in a shimmering fringed jacket, joining in with her troupe of dancers, she seems as liberated as she’s ever been. “Ask me why so many fade/ but I’m still here,” she sings. The answer is right there for all to see.

Taylor Swift rewards fans with 44 songs at Eras Tour opener: Inside her triumphant return

taylor swift tour in arizona

GLENDALE, Ariz. – When Taylor Swift says she’s going to bring the eras of her career to the stage, believe her.

Not since the most vigorous days of Bruce Springsteen and his legendary live concerts has a mainstream artist packed so much music into one show. On Friday night at State Farm Stadium near Phoenix, Swift kicked off The Eras Tour with a staggering 44 songs presented over a span of three hours and 15 minutes.

But more than just a roll call of her ubiquitous smash singles and fan-beloved album cuts, Swift’s show is as ambitious as a Broadway musical. Numerous moving set pieces, squads of dancers and backup singers, a quick-change costume parade, confetti, pyro, synchronized blinking wristbands and a gorgeous curved video screen to blanket her always-smiling visage to those in the farthest rafters complemented her songs, while her multifaceted band perched unobtrusively on a corner of the stage.

True to its title, The Eras Tour indeed covered every facet of Swift’s career, from a low-key rendition of her 2006 debut single, “Tim McGraw,” to the set-closing “Karma” from her current “Midnights” album. (Only her 2010 “Speak Now” album received a single representation, the lovely “Enchanted.”)

Swift commented early in the concert that she knew her fans – about 70,000 of them on this night – went through “considerable effort” to attend the show, and through her singing, dancing, storytelling, sweating and strutting both on the main stage and the lengthy catwalk, she rewarded them mightily.

The Eras Tour spans the country for 51 more dates through August, including a second round in Glendale on Saturday. As spunky as Swift is at 33, this is a grueling show that will require enormous stamina for the next five months.

But if any artist can achieve the level of perfection she demands of herself, it’s Swift.

Here are some highlights from Swift’s career overview:

‘Lover’ Era

As Lesley Gore’s 1963 statement song “You Don’t Own Me” blasted through the stadium, a clock ticked the countdown to show time – as if these Swifty disciples needed their anticipation amped.

“Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince” served as the opening salvo as Swift, willowy in silver sequined boots and a leotard invoking the pastel color motif of her “Lover” album, rose from underneath the catwalk on a massive platform that would be a frequent set piece throughout the show.

Since Swift never toured behind her 2019 album because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this marked the live debut of “Cruel Summer” and also allowed for a sassy presentation of “The Man” with Swift donning an oversized sparkly jacket to frolic on a sleek office set and a cool remix of “You Need to Calm Down.”

Her joy at returning to the stage for the first time since 2018 was palpable Swift absorbed the adulation for a few moments.

“I don’t know how to address the way this is making me feel right now,” she said, visibly moved.

‘Fearless’ Era

Swift skipped out in a short gold dress and with a matching guitar, spinning through a trio of songs from her 2008 release.

A quartet of band members trailed her in formation as she roamed the catwalk during “You Belong With Me.” She ended the song with her arms slung around her four background singers before rolling into a spirited “Love Story.”

‘Evermore’ Era

A backdrop of trees and a darkly theatrical theme introduced “ ‘Tis the Damn Season,” another live debut.

In a rust-colored flowered frock and forest green cape, Swift sank into a cloud of dry ice for the ethereal “Willow” before edging down the catwalk and twirling as if inhabited by the spirit of Stevie Nicks.

But the highlight from the second of the pair of folk-inflected albums Swift released during the pandemic came with “Champagne Problems,” which she performed sitting at a moss-covered piano. As the emotions in the song escalated, the fervent crowd shouted along with every word, sharing in her gleeful venom.

‘Reputation’ Era

From the first glimpse of a snake on the video screens, it was apparent that Swift would next delve into her polarizing 2017 release and she came equipped with the perfect outfit – a fierce one-legged black and red bodysuit.

These songs have always been embedded with attitude, and Swift and her crew ably snarled and tossed out sultry looks while stomping through "...Ready For It?” Beams of lights encircled Swift as she roared during the pop-metal crunch of the anything-but “Delicate” and a cool display of outfits from throughout her career – worn by her dancers – paired with the electro-goth romp, “Look What You Made Me Do.”

The stage was framed, appropriately, in a crimson hue as Swift cavorted through the carefree vibe of “22” and threw in some mischievous stare-downs against the thundering pulse of “I Knew You Were Trouble.”

But it was the  10-minute version of “All Too Well,” which Swift said she was performing as a thank-you to fans, that captivated while the crowd heartily emoted the words of the labyrinthian story song.

‘Folklore’ Era

Swift plucked seven songs from her Grammy-winning 2020 release, dotting her selections including “Invisible String” and “My Tears Ricochet” with pretty simplicity to match her elegantly flowing purple dress.

While her voice easily swerved from gentle to robust throughout the show, Swift’s vocals on the gripping “Betty,” with its singalong chorus, soared as one of her best of the night.

Perhaps her most consistently perky album, the one named for the year of Swift’s birth contains myriad gems.

The gliding “Style” and the undiminished “Blank Space,” with its epic chorus, unfolded with a wink and a snap as dancers wielding Day Glo golf clubs took their best swings at a car (on video).

Hearing the giddy “Shake it Off” after the thoughtful characterizations from “Folklore” served as the sundae after the meal.

‘Midnights’ Era

Swift followed an acoustic segment – which she said she hopes to change up songs for each show – with an aquatic-themed segue that launched with the woozy feelings of “Lavender Haze” (and yes, she wore a lavender ensemble).

Her recent smash, “Anti-Hero,” positioned itself as another addition to her canon that will be heard on tours for years to come, while Swift and her dancers paid homage to Bob Fosse’s “Chicago” with a slinky chair routine to accompany “Vigilante S---.”

At the close of the show, as confetti rained onto the stage, Swift took her curtain call with her entire performance team before taking a victory lap, solo, to express her gratitude to her devotees one more time.

Paramore and Gayle

Opening the evening at 6:30 sharp was Gayle, who delivered a taut set of melodic rockers including the Grammy-nominated “abcdefu” and a solid cover of Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know.”

The pop-punk-rock stylings of Paramore followed just before 7 p.m., with frontwoman Hayley Williams , sporting red ankle boots and constantly swiveling hips, skipping around the stage and catwalk during their nine-song, 40-minute set.

Singalongs were rampant during “That’s What You Get,” “Misery Business” and set closer, “Ain’t It Fun,” while the band also broke out the swaying ballad – not a favorite of Williams’, she admitted – “The Only Exception.”

Taylor Swift kicks off Eras Tour with no direct shot at Ticketmaster, but thanks fans for ‘considerable effort’ to be there

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift opened her U.S. concert series with a three-hour tour of her career.

Swift kicked off the first concert of the 27-date Eras Tour with a six-song set from her album “Lover” on Friday night at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, where the Super Bowl was played a month ago.

“I don’t know how to address the way this is making me feel right now,” Swift, who hasn’t toured since 2018, said early in the show.

She ended the concert with a seven-song set from her latest album “Midnights,” closing with the song “Karma.”

In between she played clusters of songs from most of her albums — and just one, “Tim McGraw,” from her 2006 self-titled debut. In the end it took 44 songs and just over three hours for her to span her 17-year career.

Having not toured for her previous three albums, this concert series is intended to play catchup by providing the live debut of many of those songs. When  Swift announced the tour  in November she called it “a journey through the musical eras of my career (past and present!).”

Swift seemed to acknowledge the Ticketmaster furor  that sullied the run-up to the tour when she told the crowd of more than 70,000 that she understands it took  “considerable effort” for them to be there .

After another show at the same venue Saturday night, the tour moves on to Allegiant Stadium outside Las Vegas and then AT&T Stadium near Dallas.

It concludes with two Los Angeles-area shows in August.

Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour Is a 3-Hour Career-Spanning Victory Lap

By Waiss Aramesh

Waiss Aramesh

How do we measure the impact of a musician in 2023? Streams can be bought. Awards can be finessed. Is it when demand for show tickets leads to a congressional hearing about Ticketmaster’s policies? Or when flight attendants shout out a fanbase making a pilgrimage to see a tour opener? Or when TikToks of merch inspirations and setlist predictions rack up millions of views? Nearly a decade ago, a headline ran declaring ‘ Taylor Swift Is The Music Industry’ and those with even the slightest pulse on pop culture can tell she’s only grown more omnipresent since. It all led to a warm evening in Glendale, Arizona where months after delivering her most commercially-successful album to date, Midnights , Swift debuted a discography-spanning setlist that lasted over three hours and kicked off an aptly-named stadium run. The Eras Tour has arrived.

After night had fallen and GAYLE and Paramore revved the crowd up with a mix of recent chart-toppers (GAYLE’s “abcdefu”) and cultural anthems (Paramore’s “Misery Business”), it was time for the main event. At 7:57pm, a timer appeared on a massive screen prompting screams from all corners of State Farm Stadium. Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me” played as fans braced themselves for the arrival of Swift. When the timer hit 0:00, the house we’d seen in the “Lover” music video assembled on the screen, indicating that this evening was first and foremost about reviving the feelings each era evoked.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

It’s easy to compare one of Swift’s stadium shows to something you’d see on Broadway — never has that been more true than for The Eras Tour . The setlist is cut up into acts, grouped together by eras for each of Swift’s ten studio albums. For each era/act, Swift went full-send into that album’s look, feel, costume, color blocking, and more.

Many eras got a few songs. At one moment, it seemed like Swift’s soft spot for Folklore would mean we’d hear the entire album. On the opposite end, Speak Now ’s part of the show was short but impactful. Swift played only one song from her third studio album, “Enchanted,” while wearing a stunning floor-length ballroom gown designed by Nicole + Derr. Hopping from act to act, Swift made it extremely clear when she’s taking the audience out of one era and into another. This isn’t a hastily put together setlist with a vague thread of connective tissue — Swift is taking her audience on a nostalgic extravaganza.

Taylor Swift Dominates Entire Top 10 on Hot 100. Again

Taylor swift makes chart history with ‘the tortured poets department', how st. vincent unlocked her realest album yet.

For “The Man,” Swift completed her Versace look with a blazer and made sure everyone could see the red bottoms when she kicked her feet up on a conference room table as she delivered the masterfully written and scathing assessment of gender inequality in pop culture. Swift closed out the Lover era act with “You Need to Calm Down” and “The Archer,” the latter getting a beautifully stripped down rendition so Swift’s vocals echoed across the stadium: “Because all of my enemies started out friends / Help me hold onto you.”

At one point, as Swift ran through hits from her Fearless era, she flashed a smile and announced to the crowd that she was taking us back to high school with her. The nostalgia seeped into the show, resulting in some of the loudest crowd participation yet, especially from those old enough to have grown up with Swift and were in high school at the same time she was. The singer ran through “Fearless,” “You Belong With Me,” and “Love Story,” reminding us of a time when we discovered the pop phenomenon unbeknownst to the level of celebrity she’d achieve.

Something about Swift — she’s online. If the fact that she decided to end last night with the TikTok-friendly “Karma” doesn’t make that obvious enough, her joke about disliking Evermore hammers home the point.

Later on in the act reserved for her ninth studio album, in line with how theatrical the event was, Swift set up a beautiful dinner setting only to deliver a heart-wrenching rendition of “Tolerate It.” She also performed “Tis the Damn Season,” “Willow,” “Marjorie,” and “Champagne Problems,” giving fans a sizable taste of the Evermore live experience they weren’t able to receive when the project came out in 2020.

For the acts dedicated to Reputation and Red , fans were treated to a masterclass in visuals and hitmaking, two key elements that has assured Swift prolonged success for as long as she’s had it. The powerful, striking, snake motifs were an awesome callback for fans who attended the Reputation tour.

For Red , Swift went through “22,” “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” and “I Knew You Were Trouble. She closed out the act with a beautiful performance of the 10-minute “Taylor’s Version” of “All Too Well.” In the evening’s most ethereal moment, small white confetti made to look like snow blanketed the State Farm Stadium as she neared the end of her magnum opus, singing “Because in this city’s barren cold/I still remember the first fall of snow/And how it glistened how it fell/I remember it all too well.” Not only is Swift a savant for world-building, but she’s perfected the ability to translate those worlds into the live experience.

Swift wasn’t shy about making sure people got the full Folklore live experience. A makeshift cabin, not unlike the one made during Swift’s 2021 Grammys performance, sat on the stage with Swift perched on it during “Invisible String.” The star also discussed how she finally got comfortable crafting narratives for purely fictional characters, rather than ripping them from the headlines about her life.

1989’s era act turned the party up and restored the energy, with Swift donning a Roberto Cavalli top and skirt and going through “Style,” “Blank Space,” “Shake It Off,” “Wildest Dreams,” and “Bad Blood.”

To cap off the evening, Swift returned to Midnights , performing album highlights “Lavender Haze,” “Mastermind,” and more. It was hard to ignore the immense gratitude the singer continued to exude throughout the evening, with the “thank yous” coming more and more often the closer she got to the end.

Eventually, the singer asked the crowd if they had time for one more and launched into her finale, “Karma,” a track with a passionate chorus that’s begging to be scream-sung in a room of over 70,000 who’ve been waiting for this exact moment for years. Maybe it’s fitting that an artist who’s had more than her fair share of ups and downs, and at times has been the most polarizing musician alive, ends her stadium tour opener with a song about how she can finally protect her peace. Karma’s a relaxing thought, indeed.

Taylor Swift performs on the opening night of the Eras tour.

Taylor Swift review – pop’s hardest-working star gives Eras tour her all

State Farm Stadium, Glendale, Arizona

The electrifying start of the singer-songwriter’s first tour in five years saw a mammoth, fan-pleasing 44-song set and extravagant staging

B y Friday afternoon, there was a new destination in Arizona: Swift City, population 70,000 fans in town for the first stop on Taylor Swift’s Eras tour, and designated by some of them on Google Maps as a place of worship. “Welcome to ERAzona,” the 33-year-old pop star’s publicist emailed me hours before the show, referring to one of the hashtags Swifties developed to tag their arrival for what was billed – and delivered – as an expansive celebration of her undeniably prolific catalog. Team Swift is, as ever, attuned to the online conversation around her; you cannot consume Taylor Swift music without dipping (or diving) into Taylor Swift content. This is an artist who, as some have argued, has come closer than Mark Zuckerberg to building a true metaverse and cultivated a famously chatty, close virtual relationship with her fans.

Those fans turned out in force on Friday night in Glendale – fittingly for the base of her popularity, a suburb, roughly the same distance from Phoenix as Hendersonville, the town in Tennessee where Swift attended her one year of high school, is from Nashville, home of the country music industry that shaped her early career. Mostly women and gay men (along with a few good sport boyfriends/husbands) dressed in the instantly recognizable iconography of her 10 albums – Reputation-era black leotards, Lover-era pastels, mock-ups of her 2021 Folklore Grammy dress, rhinestone-adorned bodysuits a la Bejeweled music video, and at least two men in “sexy baby” T-shirts (see: Anti-Hero ).

From the outside, such intensity, courted by Swift with notorious Easter egging and rewarding, can be eye roll-inducing. But when viewed from inside the Swiftieverse, in a deafening stadium she comfortably commanded for over three hours, it is rapturous, especially for those who have grown up with her 17 years of diaristic music, and particularly for white suburban women for whom Swift is the most famous avatar.

Taylor Swift on the opening night of the Eras tour.

The Eras tour, as a show, is possibly the best-case scenario for fan service. Those who battled Ticketmaster and won were rewarded with a staggering 44-song setlist (about twice the number in her previous shows), some cut second verses but no mash-ups, that lasted the length of the movie Titanic (three hours and 12 minutes). It was a flex of unmatched productivity – since her last tour in 2018, Swift has released four original albums (or, as she put it, “we added four new members to the family” with Lover , Folklore , Evermore and Midnights ) on top of two album re-recordings. And she dipped substantially into all of them. Going album by album (or, era by era) in color-blocked, outfit-delineated segments (including two sparkling bodysuits, a ballgown, two ethereal dresses, a one-legged snake suit, and the outfit from the 22 music video), Swift packed more than many TikTok speculators thought possible into one show, with almost no breaks and seemingly endless stamina.

The production was more Broadway extravaganza than singular concert – multiple set changes, from mossy Folklore cabin to high-rise office for The Man; a phalanx of backup dancers and four backup singers; color-synced bracelets for every audience member timed with the full array of stadium lights. The T-shaped stage with rising platforms provided each area of the floor with ample chances to ogle and photograph her; visuals (not subtle, as is her style) and staging drawn from her music videos blared on a giant curved screen behind her. Save for a few numbers, it was a less heavily choreographed routine than the Reputation tour (a good thing), more an enthusiastic acting out by Swift of each of her songs, as if engaging in a dead-serious karaoke battle with each of her screaming fans for 44 straight songs. (I mean this in the best way – her commitment to each bit did not waver.)

There wasn’t time for much banter in between all this, though she made sure to cover the bases: gratitude for the crowd (“I don’t know how to process all of this and how it’s making me feel”), cheeky crowd-pleaser lines (“I love to explain to men how to apologize”), a nod at criticism of the woodsy Evermore (“an album that I absolutely love despite what some of y’all say on TikTok”). On that note, the scale of the production did make the earthy, whispery numbers on Folklore and Evermore (five and seven songs live, respectively), somehow work for a stadium (it helped that people sang along, as with almost every number, almost as loud as her vocals).

Taylor Swift on the opening night of the Eras tour.

There were some sound issues, which seems less like a tour or performance problem than the challenge of projecting sound to a stadium full of 70,000 people screaming at the top of their lungs. When dialed up for the heavier, harder, synthier numbers (ie, anything not on Folklore or Evermore but especially Reputation, 1989 and Red), it could be difficult to hear her enunciate, or just grasp texture within the wall of cathartic sound. At one point, the volume on her mic seemed to go wildly up and down.

The best showcases for her vocal abilities, then, were when she returned to her roots: one woman and an instrument, as on the acoustic versions of Mirrorball and her first-ever single, Tim McGraw. And, most effectively, on the 10-minute version of All Too Well – the crown jewel in her songwriting catalog and the emotional highpoint of the evening, a number she commanded from silence to goosebump-inducing crescendo and back with guitar pick in hand.

Or, at least, my emotional highpoint. Pick any fan in the stadium, and they will probably name another song, maybe one not even sung (sorry to Speak Now fans, which got one track), as their favorite. In sheer scope of songs and devotion to lyrics, no artist can match her – a point she stomped home, from Miss Americana through the aptly titled Mastermind (with a dose of Karma at the end), in an indisputably epic start to the Eras era.

This article was amended on 18 March, 2023 to remove a reference to a backing track. Swift and four backing vocalists all sang live.

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour setlist: All 44 songs, from 'All Too Well' to 'Anti-Hero'

taylor swift tour in arizona

Nearly 140,000 people celebrated Taylor Swift’s long-anticipated return to the stage at two sold-out State Farm Stadium shows in Glendale , Arizona, on March 17-18.

She performed songs from across her 10 albums (and two rerecords), leaning on her biggest hits for older records and wading into new territory with the four new albums she has released since her last tour in 2018.

The biggest winners of the night were Swifties from across the world who watched their idol perform in person and on livestreams. The losers were her "Speak Now" and "Taylor Swift" albums, which had the least representation on the set list.

Bucking the trend from her past decade of tours — and proving our set list prediction wrong — Swift did not begin The Eras Tour with the first track from her most recent album, “Midnights.” Instead, she gave “Lover” the honor as the album whose tour never came to fruition due to the pandemic.

Review: Welcome to Taylor Swift's Eras era. How her kickoff concert stunned Arizona

She then launched into a 44-song set list that was divided by album. One surprise that fans can expect for each show is a different acoustic duo before she launches into the "Midnights" portion, as Swift vowed to perform two different tracks for every tour date.

Despite some fans’ speculation that Swift wouldn’t show some love to her alternative sister albums, “Folklore” and “Evermore,” she gave them their due “despite what some of you say on TikTok. I’ve seen it. I’ve seen all of it!” she said during night one.

Here’s every song Taylor Swift sang during her first Eras Tour shows on March 17-18 in Arizona.

Since the Hot 100 launched in 1958, there has only been one week out of thousands when a single musician has occupied the entire top 10 on the ranking of the most-consumed songs in America. Now, that same artist has managed the same showing again, matching–and even exceeding–her historic performance in a show of unparalleled dominance.

Taylor Swift claims the entire top 10 on the Hot 100 for herself this week. Ten tracks from her new album The Tortured Poets Department debut inside the region, pushing every other hit outside the tier and helping the singer-songwriter make history once more.

The “Cruel Summer” chart-topper doesn’t stop at No. 10, though. Swift occupies the top 14 positions on the Hot 100 this week. That’s a new record , and the singer beats her own best showing, which she managed just a few years back.

The superstar earns another No. 1 single with “Fortnight,” the lead cut from The Tortured Poets Department . That tune easily opens atop the Hot 100, bringing both her and Post Malone back to the summit.

Swift has now collected twelve No. 1s on the Hot 100. More than half of those have debuted atop the tally, including this latest champion. Malone collects his fifth career winner, thanks to his partnership with the biggest artist on the planet.

Just one other collaboration from The Tortured Poets Department hits the top 10 this week. Swift helps Florence + the Machine reach the loftiest region on the chart for the first time with “Florida!!!,” the Florence Welch-led band’s joint effort with the powerhouse. That cut launches at No. 8.

When she released her 2022 album Midnights , Swift became the first artist to dominate the top 10 on the Hot 100 in this manner. Other stars, like Drake and The Beatles, had come close, but none had quite accomplished the full feat until then.

In addition to owning the top 14 spots on the Hot 100, Swift fills a total of 32 spaces on the competitive tally this time around. That’s a new best showing among female musicians, and it’s one of the most impressive accumulations of simultaneous hits on the chart.

Here is a look at where Swift’s 14 highest-ranking songs from The Tortured Poets Department debut on this week’s Hot 100:

  • “Fortnight” with Post Malone
  • “I Can Do it with a Broken Heart”
  • “The Tortured Poets Department”
  • “So Long, London”
  • “My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys”
  • “But Daddy I Love Him”
  • “Florida!!!” with Florence + the Machine
  • “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?”
  • “Guilty as Sin?”
  • “Fresh Out the Slammer”
  • “The Alchemy”
  • “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived”

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Fans theorize that Taylor Swift is changing her Eras Tour setlist to include songs from her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department.”

Swift shared a black-and-white video collage of her practicing for the upcoming leg of her tour and added her new single, “Fortnight,” in the background to YouTube Shorts on Thursday.

The Grammy winner, 34, included several snippets of her wearing different athleisure outfits while holding a microphone, singing and dancing on different parts of the stage.

The “Cruel Summer” songstress even featured a snap of her playing her acoustic guitar and sitting at her signature mossy piano.

However, some eagle-eyed fans noticed a few differences in some of the clips from what she’s done in her past shows –– such as her background dancers wearing black top hats and canes.

Swift also appeared to be leaning on a silver pole that seemed to have a white “TTPD” sign hanging on the side of it. Fans additionally pointed out her white guitar and matching microphone.

Swift will resume her tour in Paris in two weeks –– aka a fortnight –– on May 9.

Several fans flooded the comments pointing out the changes and wrote about how convinced they are she’ll be swapping some songs for “TTPD” hits.

Swift has not released the setlist for her upcoming shows and she did not share the setlist before she kicked off the tour in Arizona in March 2023.

The “Shake it Off” songstress previously sang 44 songs on every show and swapped out two songs each concert that were acoustic “surprise songs” not included in the same setlist.

After Paris, Swift will hit several European countries, including Sweden, Spain and Portugal, before wrapping up in London in August.

Taylor Swift Is Not Attending the 2024 Met Gala to Focus on European Tour Dates

Swift kicks off her Europe tour in Paris on May 9

Melody Chiu is an Executive Editor at PEOPLE overseeing music, events and emerging content. She has been with the brand since 2009, editing, writing and reporting across all entertainment verticals. She has written cover stories on Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Melissa McCarthy, Blake Shelton, Jordan Turpin and Sandra Oh. The Los Angeles native graduated from the University of Southern California and has appeared on Extra! , The Talk, Access Hollywood and Good Morning America .

Taylor Swift is skipping the 2024 Met Gala , PEOPLE can confirm.

Despite reports that she would be attending , the singer, who just dropped her Tortured Poets Department album on April 19, is sitting out fashion's biggest night. Instead, she'll be focusing on rehearsals and tour prep ahead of her Eras Tour dates picking back up on May 9 in Paris before traveling all over Europe during the spring and summer.

The Met Gala, which always takes place on the first Monday in May, will be held on May 6, which would have been a tight squeeze ahead of the tour for Swift, 34.

Emma McIntyre/TAS23/Getty

TMZ previously reported that Swift and her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, would not be attending the Met Gala this year.

Swift has already attended the prestigious night six times (her most recent appearance was in 2016) while Kelce has yet to make his debut at the prestigious event.

The Grammy winner has had a huge couple of weeks, following the release of The Tortured Poets Department as she prepares to head back out on tour. She has taken over the Billboard chart (again!), has seen her album rack up 1 billion Spotify streams in a week and emotionally shared glowing reviews for her work .

No big deal, right?

John Shearer/Getty

While there’s going to be a blank space with Swift absent, the Met Gala is sure to bring out all the heavy hitters in fashion.

This year’s theme is centered on the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibit, which will feature approximately 250 items — including 15 significant pieces such as an 1877 Charles Frederick Worth silk satin ball gown — that span over 400 years of history. “It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion,” said Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute.

Expectedly, the dress code is themed “The Garden of Time” and is inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name. The story follows a count and countess living “in their utopia of leisure, art, and beauty,” as noted by Vogue , who predicts that stars will show up in ensembles paying homage to florals, music and time.

John Lamparski/Getty

Zendaya , Jennifer Lopez , Chris Hemsworth and Bad Bunny will lead the pack as the four co-chairs of the night. Despite the Met Gala being a few weeks away, some of them have yet to finalize their looks (who can blame them, it’s a lot of pressure).

The Challengers actress, an already five-time attendee (her insane Cinderella transformations on the famous steps is simply unforgettable) told Vanity Fair recently that she still doesn’t “really know” what she’s wearing, but she has “ideas.”

Meanwhile, the This is Me…Now singer is still ruminating over a few potentials. “I have a few different sketches. I’m still deciding,” Lopez told Vogue this week. “I’m also one of those people who chooses at the last minute. Like, I like choices, and then I go, ‘Okay, this is how I feel today,’ and then we try to kinda create some type of amazing look — ‘cause that is the night for looks!”

Taylor Swift makes history, sweeping the top 14 spots on the Billboard Hot 100

(Gray News) – Taylor Swift has once again made history on the Billboard charts, thanks to the massive debut of her new album “The Tortured Poets Department.”

On Monday, Billboard announced that Swift has swept the top 14 spots on the Billboard Hot 100, a new record for any artist in history.

Swift was already the record holder, being the only artist to ever claim the top 10 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 when she released her album “Midnights” in 2022.

Now, not only has she done it a second time, but she also pushed herself to greater heights by claiming the top 14.

Here are the top 14 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, dated May 4, all by Swift:

  • “Fortnight,” feat. Post Malone
  • “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart”
  • “The Tortured Poets Department”
  • “So Long, London”
  • “My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys”
  • “But Daddy I Love Him”
  • “Florida!!!,” feat. Florence + The Machine
  • “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?”
  • “Guilty as Sin?”
  • “Fresh Out the Slammer”
  • “The Alchemy”
  • “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived”

Another artist does not touch this week’s chart until No. 15 with Benson Boone’s song “Beautiful Things.”

The online chart will refresh the newest updates starting Tuesday.

“Fortnight” became Swift’s 12th No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Fortnight” joins these other Swift songs that hit No. 1:

  • “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” 2012
  • “Shake It Off,” 2014
  • “Blank Space,” 2014
  • “Bad Blood” feat. Kendrick Lamar, 2015
  • “Look What You Made Me Do,” 2017
  • “Cardigan,” 2020
  • “Willow,” 2020
  • “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version),” 2021
  • “Anti-Hero,” 2022
  • “Cruel Summer,” 2023
  • “Is It Over Now?” 2023

Swift is only the eighth artist in history to have 12 or more No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, joining the ranks of artists like The Beatles and Michael Jackson.

The only artists in history to achieve such a feat are:

  • The Beatles (20 No. 1 hits)
  • Mariah Carey (19 No. 1 hits)
  • Rihanna (14 No. 1 hits)
  • Michael Jackson (13 No. 1 hits)
  • Drake (13 No. 1 hits)
  • Madonna (12 No. 1 hits)
  • The Supremes (12 No. 1 hits)
  • Taylor Swift (12 No. 1 hits)

“Fortnight” hitting No. 1 pushed Swift past Whitney Houston, who has 11 No. 1 hits.

This week, Swift also landed her 14th No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with “The Tortured Poets Department,” tying her with Jay-Z. To date, only The Beatles have more, with 19.

Swift is on a short break from touring right now but will begin the next leg of the Eras Tour in Paris on May 9.

Billboard has a running list of every record Swift has made on its charts.

'Taylor Swift' bills would crack down on bot ticket purchases, inflated resale prices

taylor swift tour in arizona

Lansing — Michigan lawmakers on Wednesday introduced bills to crack down on the use of automated software programs snarling concert ticket sales and driving up prices for big name performers.

The legislation is similar to the so-called “Taylor Swift” laws recently passed in Arizona after tickets were gobbled up for Swift's Eras concert tour by automated bots that later resold the tickets for higher prices.

While there are laws at the federal level preventing the practice, they are rarely enforced, said GOP state Rep. Graham Filler, who sponsored the legislation with Rep. Mike McFall, D-Hazel Park.

“I’m trying to make Michigan a really unattractive state for these bots to do business,” Filler said. “It’s unfair to people, it’s anti-competitive, anti-capitalist, it’s anti-consumer.”

It's not clear that Michigan concerts have been plagued by the same problems seen in Arizona, but Filler and McFall said they want to take a proactive approach to prevent against a similar event.

The Event Online Ticket Sales Act would prohibit an automated software application from creating multiple IP addresses, email addresses or accounts to buy up tickets for an event that exceed the posted ticket limit. The entertainment events protected by the act include theater performances, concerts, exhibitions or sporting events that are open to the public.

The legislation also would prevent individuals from using software to disable a ticket seller's security measure or circumvent a waiting period, electronic queue or other sales volume limitation programs.

Violations of the act would be investigated by the attorney general and would be punishable by a civil fine of up to $5,000 per ticket. The attorney general also could seek to recover restitution.

“Michiganders are tired of these scalping bots who purchase and hoard tickets for resale, often pricing them out of reach for many hardworking families,” McFall said in a statement Wednesday.

The introduction of the legislation comes more than three years after the Michigan Legislature voted to repeal a 1931 ban on ticket scalping.

The 2020 law — passed after roughly six years of debate — repealed a state ban that was rarely enforced and left the door open to bad actor ticket scalpers who never had a ticket in the first place.

The repeal allowed individuals and businesses to scalp tickets so long as the businesses’ names and websites did not resemble the venue or event for which the tickets are sold. Ticket sellers, under the 2020 law, must have the ticket in their possession at the time of sale or inform the purchaser if he or she does not have the ticket 48 hours ahead of the event.

The legislation at that time prohibited the practice of using “ticketing bot” software, making it subject to a 93-day misdemeanor and/or $1,000 fine.

The legislation introduced Wednesday differs because it allows the attorney general to bring a civil action, not a criminal one, with a higher fine of $5,000 per ticket.

Taylor Swift's 'Tortured Poets Department' debuts at No. 1 on Billboard, hits largest streaming week ever

Taylor Swift's “mind is blown” after her latest album hit record streaming numbers on top of selling nearly 2 million physical records in what Billboard described Sunday as a “historic” debut.

“The Tortured Poets Department” hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 200 chart after it was released last week. According to the music publication, Swift's latest album sold more than 2.6 million units in its first week, when calculating equivalent units through streaming.

Traditional album sales accounted for more than 1.9 million records across digital downloads and physical units.

“She is the only act with seven different albums to each sell at least 1 million copies in a single week in the modern era,” the outlet wrote.

Adele's 2015 album “25” still beats Swift's with 3.4 million units sold in a single week, and 'NSYNC is close behind with 2.4 million one-week sales of their 2000 album “No Strings Attached.”

But Swift's latest release also had the biggest streaming debut for an album in history. Billboard reports that the combined totals for all 31 tracks hit 891.37 million official streams.

Swift posted a thank-you to fans on X, saying that not only was her mind blown but that she was “fired up” to continue her worldwide tour in a few weeks.

“I’m completely floored by the love you’ve shown this album,” Swift wrote. “2.6 million ARE YOU ACTUALLY SERIOUS?? Thank you for listening, streaming, and welcoming Tortured Poets into your life. Feeling completely overwhelmed.”

“The Tortured Poets Department” is available in four different variants, each of which features an exclusive bonus track, on CD, cassette and vinyl. She also sells Target-exclusive versions of the vinyl and CDs, as well as limited collector's edition CDs that were sold on her website. And Swift dropped a surprise 31-track deluxe version at 2 a.m. on April 19, which was available for digital download as well as streaming.

Her album marked a banner week for vinyl sales, with 859,000 vinyl units sold. That's the largest single-week vinyl sale for an album in the modern era, according to Billboard.

This album is the 14th No. 1 album for Swift, tying her in second place with rapper Jay-Z. The pair are only topped by The Beatles, who have 19 chart-topping albums.

Since 2019, Swift has released five studio albums, plus re-recorded four of her previous releases with exclusive new tracks to gain ownership of her masters. Her prolific output has built momentum over the last few years, making her one of the biggest acts in the music industry. Her sold-out “Eras Tour” began in Arizona last year and will resume in Paris on May 9. Fans speculated that some of her new album will be performed onstage after Swift released a video on YouTube Shorts that appeared to show her touching a railing with the logo of her album's abbreviation, “TTPD.”

“I was already so fired up to get back to the tour but you doing THIS?? May 9th can’t come soon enough,” Swift told fans Sunday.
