12th World Medical Tourism & Global Healthcare Congress

The 12th edition of the World Medical Tourism & Global Healthcare Congress (WMTC) will be hosted in Abu Dhabi, bringing together a number of the healthcare industry’s stakeholders and largest buyers, key leaders, insurance companies, ministries and health authorities to share the most current field-related case studies and latest developments. The Congress, the annual conference for the Medical Tourism Association, is being held outside of the USA for the first time in 12 years. It will run for three days in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi. The Congress will see more than 100 experts and leaders from the healthcare industry where they will discuss the latest developments in the field of healthcare and medical tourism.

Our history

The HTI Conference was launched in Zagreb in 2011 as a specialised B2B event endorsed by the Croatian Chamber of Economy, and it became international in 2015 hosting more than 300 participants from 40 countries. After the Tourism Unit of the European Commission supported HTI Vienna 2016, the European Parliament endorsed the European HTI Summit by offering the events in its premises in Brussels since 2018, thus reinforcing the HTI leadership in Europe. By today, HTI offered ten editions of the Previous HTI Events  in Europe and the Middle East and several HTI Partner Events . The HTI today represents a truly European brand and a hub that aims to create synergies and boost health travel while strengthening the communication among the public sector and service providers.

Discover south florida at the 5th world medical tourism and global healthcare congress.

The 5th World Medical Tourism and Global Healthcare Congress (WMT & GHC) will be bringing up to 2,000 people from over 90 different countries to the South Florida area this October. But South Florida is no stranger to diversity, world-class healthcare, international business and, of course, fun.  This beautiful tropical metropolis will provide the perfect backdrop for a successful conference – 85 percent business with 15 percent fun!

The term “South Florida” refers to the metropolitan area that covers the counties of Miami Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. The principal cities include Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, West Palm Beach and Boca Raton.

The Congress will take place at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa nestled between Fort Lauderdale and Miami in the vibrant city of Hollywood. As of the 2005 United States Census, there were 5,334,685 people living in the South Florida metropolitan area, making it the most populous metropolis in the Southeastern U.S. and the eighth most populous metropolitan area in the country. ‍

Melting pot

South Florida is a very diverse community with a large plurality of foreign-born Americans, in large part from its proximity to Latin America. Of the people living in the South Florida metro area, 37 percent are foreign-born.

An astonishing 48 percent of the population speaks a language other than English at home, including Spanish, Haitian Creole, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, Russian and Yiddish. Countless other languages are also spoken in the area. ‍

Booming economy

According to a 2009 UBS study of 73 world cities, Miami was ranked as the richest city in the U.S. and the world’s fifth richest city in terms of purchasing power. Although South Florida’s economy is largely based on international trade and tourism, a number of companies are based in the area, many with connections to Latin America.

Because of their proximity, Miami and South Florida serve as headquarters of Latin American operations for more than 1,100 multinational corporations; that adds up to more than $221 billion in annual revenues. A few examples are AIG, American Airlines, Cisco, Disney, Exxon, FedEx, Kraft Foods, Microsoft, Oracle, SBC Communications, Sony, Visa International and Wal-Mart.

Many Fortune 500 companies are based in the metropolitan area, including FPL Group ($15.6 billion), Office Depot ($12.1 billion), World Fuel Services ($11.3 billion), AutoNation ($11 billion) and Ryder System ($5 billion). Many of these employers will be attending the conference to look for quality of healthcare options for their employees. ‍

For more than two decades, the Port of Miami has been headquarters to the world’s largest cruise ships and operations, including Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruises and Carnival Cruise Lines. Cruise lines have unique advantages and interesting target markets for medical tourism opportunities as well.

Many are targeting patients for comprehensive trips on the seas. Some of the challenges this presents for inbound and outbound patients will be addressed at the conference by Dr. Arthur Diskin, the VP & Global Chief Medical Officer of Royal Caribbean Cruises. ‍

Fun in the sun

After three days of intense networking, attendees will have the chance to unwind in the South Florida sun.  South Florida offers a great combination of beautiful nature, fabulous shopping and exciting city life. With the conference venue right on the beach, attendees will have an easy transition from business to fun. Who says that you can’t network with your toes in the sand? ‍

South Florida has a unique ecosystem with both the ocean and the everglades minutes away. Appropriately called “The Sunshine State,” Florida is blessed with a year-round tropical climate, making a full range of outdoor activities available all year long, including water sports, boating, fishing, diving, snorkeling, jet skiing, surfing, parasailing and canoeing or kayaking along paddling trails just a short walk from the seashore.

Award-winning beaches, warm Atlantic waters and soft ocean breezes make South Florida an appealing seaside destination. ‍

The conference will take place during the tail end of sea turtle nesting season. Each year from March through October sea turtles return to South Florida beaches to lay eggs. Nearly 90 percent of sea turtle nesting in the U.S. occurs in Florida. Sea turtle hatchlings use light and reflections from the moon to find their way to the water at night.

Beach visitors can help them during the nesting season by keeping beaches clean, being aware of nesting sites and reducing artificial lighting near beaches that can discourage adult females from nesting on the beach and confuse mothers and hatchlings. Although it is entirely unpredictable, a lucky attendee may get a chance to witness this natural phenomenon firsthand. ‍ South Florida is also home to The Seminole Tribe of Florida, which serves as the “Gateway to the Everglades.” At the Seminole’s Billie Swamp Safari within the Seminole Indian Reservation, history comes alive as explorers make their way through more than 2,200 lush acres of the Big Cypress Reservation.

The most exciting way to explore the “River of Grass” is by air boat. An airboat, also known as a fan boat, is a flat-bottomed vessel propelled in a forward direction by an aircraft-type propeller and powered by either an aircraft or automotive engine.

Speeding through the Florida Everglades, guides will point out the wildlife such as deer, water buffalo, bison, wild hogs, hawks, eagles and alligators in their natural habitat. ‍

People from around the world flock to South Florida to find the best deals at the Sawgrass Mills Mall, located just minutes away from the conference hotel. Sawgrass Mills is the largest outlet, value retail and entertainment destination in the U.S.

With more than 350 retailers including internationally recognized brand-name stores, full service-restaurants, entertainment venues and the region’s most sought-after luxury outlets, Sawgrass Mills offers something for the entire family to enjoy. ‍

For a more quaint shopping experience, head to the Downtown Hollywood Art & Design District.   A stroll down Hollywood Boulevard leads to a place where charming, brick-lined sidewalks intersect with trendy new boutiques, bistros and sidewalk cafes. Enjoy shopping, dining and weekly events. ‍

With the mix of cultures in the South Florida area, dining is like entering a new world of tastes, sights, aromas, seasonings and sensations. It’s a place where everyone brings something to the table as the flavors of countless cultures are showcased on dining tables everywhere.

DR RICHARD ABDALLAH

Richard Abdallah, founder of Medical Audit Professionals, Inc. (MAP) a leader in the healthcare industry for over 14 years. His career began in the clinical areas that include medical care. On the business side of healthcare, Richard has expertise in the area of International Risk Management and cost containment in the areas of catastrophic case management, long term care, medical innovations. Through each of these experiences, Dr. Abdallah has been an advocate for the patient which has allowed him to have a broad scope of the practice and an understanding of how and why the area of professional patient advocacy is emerging as a key tool to engage patients to be active participants in their health. Dr. Richard Abdallah’s uses his expertise and leadership abilities to provide direction that supports numerous other organizations, so it meets the broad needs of the patients at the point of care. He holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from St. Petersburg State Pavlov Medical University- Russia. Richard holds a registered patent in biotechnology with the United States Patent and trademark office (USPTO).

GUNNA B REDDY

Bhagvanth R Gunna is Surgeon by Profession working in Canada. He studied Medicine (MBBS) in KMC, Warangal, India and graduated in 1978. After Graduation, he was trained in Jamaica, Ireland and United Kingdom in Surgery and Surgical Specialties and obtained his FRCS from Royal College of Glasgow in 1987. After surgical training, he worked as Consultant Surgeon in Ireland for almost 5 Years till 1995.  Later he returned to Hyderabad, India and worked as Laparoscopic Surgeon and Surgical Gastroenterologist at Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, till 2008. In 2009, he got an offer from LG Health, NL, Canada and moved there. Presently he is working in Canada as a Laparoscopic Surgeon and Surgical Gastroenterologist. In 2001, he was awarded Fellowship (FRCS) without Examination by Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK. He was then appointed as Examiner and Surgical Tutor for MRCS, by Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was also Inspector for National Board of Examination and visited and Inspected several Private Healthcare facilities in India in view of granting DNB seats. He has MBA degree from Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, Germany in International Healthcare Management.

DR. CORINNE ISNARD BAGNIS

Corinne Isnard Bagnis is Professor in Nephrology (2006) at Pitié Salpetrière Hospital, the largest hospital in Europe, were she is in charge of the ambulatory renal care. She recently created the first research group in OncoNephrology in France to promote better care for renal patients with cancer. She introduced patient's empowerment at Sorbonne Medical University by creating the first diploma for patients in the field of patient's education in 2010 (Special Prize IDS from the French Academy of Medicine). In 2015, she implemented the first CME course for clinicians on Mindfulness training to improve quality of care, decrease burnout and promote compassion (over 300 HCP's in 7 years). Since 2017, she has actively been promoting e Health in the field of Nephrology with the first MOOC on renal diseases (EIT Health grant) and is conducting research projects using the AP-HP data lake. She acts as scientific partner at the Digital Medical Hub at AP-HP.

• Victor Mukhin

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
