TD Travel Insurance Review

  • About TD Travel Insurance

TD travel insurance features

Td travel insurance product rating: 2.5 stars, the pros of td travel insurance, the cons of td travel insurance, td travel insurance alternatives.

Kalleigh Lane

TD travel insurance is a convenient option for Canadians who are already customers of the big bank, letting you get insurance coverage from a familiar name. You have 3 options when it comes to what type of plan you can get: single trip, an annual plan, or trip cancellation and interruption coverage. Each plan offers your basics to keep you covered on your next trip.

But as we continue to adjust to our pandemic lives, TD travel insurance still hasn't adapted to offer COVID-related insurance, though other banks and insurance companies have. You also may find you're charged a bit more from a big bank than you would be from a smaller company.

Below are the basic features of TD travel insurance.

  • Includes pet return and return of dependent children
  • Canadian resident

TD travel insurance offers all the basics you need in 3 simple plans. There may not be as many customization options as your other options, but things are streamlined and much simpler when you don't have to choose all the details. You'll also get some less common coverage included, like pet return and return of dependent children.

Being a big bank, TD may not have the cheapest prices on the planet. Usually, you pay a little more for the convenience of working with a big bank. Make sure to shop around before committing to any insurance cost.

Rating methodology

Wondering how we calculate our product rating? First we break down the product into its main features, then give each feature a score out of 5. These scores are based on how it performs relative to similar products on the market, and averaged together to get a final score.

So what are some reasons you'd go for TD travel insurance over your other Canadian options?

Backed by a big bank you trust

As one of the 5 biggest banks in Canada, chances are you already know TD as a reputable company – and this trust is even better if you also have products with them.

3 straightforward plans available

Big banks are all about convenience, and TD travel insurance definitely fits the bill. There may not be very many choices for you, but the quote process is very simple and streamlined – you either get single trip coverage (with or without travel cancellation and interruption) or an annual plan for unlimited trips. Click here to get your quote.

Some unusual coverage included

Though the TD travel insurance plans are pretty straightforward, they do advertise some interesting coverage that you won't see everywhere. The best examples of this are pet return and the return of dependent children. On top of that, they also hit most of the main boxes: medical emergency coverage, hospital accommodations, and bills.

Save 10% with the TD U.S. Dollar account

If you have a TD U.S. Dollar account , there's actually a special discount available for you. You'll get 10% off the premium for the Travel Medical Insurance, which isn't a significant savings, but still a nice touch.

24/7 emergency assistance

If you ever need to contact TD while travelling, they have 24/7 support from anywhere in the world. This is ideal, because it means you don't have to worry about time zones when calling to make a claim.

Join over 45,000 Canadians

And of course, there will be a few reasons to encourage you to price-check other travel insurance providers as well.

Trip cancellation and interruption is at extra cost

If you want trip cancellation and interruption insurance, the cost is calculated separately from the standard premium, which is good to keep in mind. In our trial, this part of the insurance cost more than double the standard insurance ($79 for a $1,000 trip, on top of the $39 premium). And since the cost depends on the estimated price of the specific trip, you can't purchase this extra coverage for the annual plans.

No option to cover COVID-related claims

TD has an announcement front-and-center on their website that none of their plans will cover COVID-related claims. There have been other travel insurance companies that have stepped up to provide coronavirus coverage, so it would've been nice to see the same here.

Might not have the cheapest premiums

And since big banks are in favour of convenience, they can sometimes cost more than other online travel insurance companies. As an example, our test run was a 26 year old from New Brunswick going on a $1,000 trip for 8 days. TD didn't ask the destination country, but did give a mid-range price of $39 plus $79.60 for trip cancellation and interruption.

Here's how TD travel insurance compares to other options on the market.

Sun Life Go Life Insurance

What's covered by TD travel insurance?

TD travel insurance can cover you for all the basics: medical emergency coverage, hospital accommodations, physician's bills, transportation to bedside, pet return, and return of dependent children. If you're buying a simple trip plan, you can also add on trip cancellation and interruption insurance for an extra cost.

How do I get a TD travel insurance quote?

Getting a TD travel insurance quote is actually very easy. All you have to do is answer a few quick questions on the TD website, and you'll get your quote within minutes. Click here for more info .

How do I contact TD travel insurance to make a claim?

If you need to contact TD travel insurance, you can call 1-800-359-6704 if you're in North America, or (416) 977‑5040 if you're anywhere else in the world. They have 24/7 emergency assistance, so you can call them at any time.

Is TD travel insurance good?

Going with TD travel insurance is a safe choice because it's offered by a big Canadian bank that you're likely already familiar with. It offers standard protection with a very straightforward quote tool and plans. But if you're looking for the cheapest plan around, you may want to do some shopping around first.

Visiting another country or province without travel insurance can be a costly mistake. Indeed, did you know that an overnight stay in a hospital in the United States can exceed $14,000 CAD? Some countries might even refuse to help you if you are unable to prepay for treatment.

It is not fun to think about, but travel insurance is a necessity when you are away from home . It guarantees your ability to get and pay for health care, if and when you need it. Beyond medical emergencies, travel insurance can also help with flight issues and lost luggage, amongst other things.

That being said, what to think about TD travel insurance in Canana? What coverage is TD providing? For what price? What are its pros and cons? Read our review on TD's medical travel insurance, get a quote, and see how the competitors fare.

Travel medical insurance for visitors to the U.S. provides short-term medical coverage It compensates you up to the policy limits for medical expenses if you get sick or injured during your trip.

Sometimes called visitors insurance, these policies are designed for non-U.S. citizens traveling to the U.S. for trips lasting a few weeks or a few months, up to a year. For example, travel medical insurance is a common type of travel insurance for parents visiting the U.S . whose adult children live here.

Americans traveling abroad can also buy travel medical insurance for themselves, often as part of comprehensive travel insurance policies that cover trip cancellation, travel delays and much more.

A comprehensive travel medical insurance policy for visitors to the U.S. generally covers inpatient and outpatient services, urgent and emergency medical services and other health care, as well as a range of other types of care. This can include:

  • Emergency dental coverage
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Emergency medical treatment for pregnancy complications
  • Mental disorders
  • Prescriptions/medication

The list of exclusions varies by insurance policy but can include:

  • Cosmetic and elective surgeries
  • Injuries due to extreme sports
  • Intentional self-inflicted injuries
  • Suicide or attempted suicide
  • Injury or illness while over the legal limits for alcohol

Be sure to review your policy for details on what conditions and activities are not covered.

Some travel medical insurance policies cover pre-existing medical conditions—and it’s usually with coverage caps—but not all do.

Many travel medical insurance plans for visitors to the U.S. cover the acute onset of pre-existing medical conditions. This coverage generally provides necessary emergency care for a medical emergency that is life threatening or requires immediate medical treatment if you experience a sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence of a pre-existing condition. There are coverage limits, so be sure to read the details of the policy.

Compare & Buy Travel Insurance

Travel medical insurance is relatively affordable considering that you can buy high coverage amounts for long trips to the U.S. Costs will depend mainly on the visitor’s age, trip length and the medical coverage amount and deductible chosen.

To identify the best travel medical insurance for visitors coming to the U.S ., we scored only comprehensive travel medical plans on the following criteria:

Cost (50% of score): Plans with lower costs were awarded the most points. We analyzed average rates for:

  • A 70-year-old traveler from India coming to the U.S. for 90 days, with coverage of $100,000 with a $250 deductible (or closest deductible).
  • Two travelers ages 60 and 65 coming from India to the U.S. for 30 days, with coverage of $50,000 with a $100 deductible (or closest deductible).

Trip interruption benefits (10% of score): Points were awarded if policies included $10,000 or more in trip interruption benefits. If a visitor has to cut their trip to the U.S. short and return home, this coverage can pay the costs. The reason for the trip interruption must be listed in the policy in order to make a claim.

Choices of policy maximum coverage amounts (10% of score): Points were awarded if the policy had maximum medical coverage amounts of $500,000 and up.

Urgent care out-of-network reimbursement (10% of score): Policies that cover out-of-network urgent care at 100% (after copay) earned points.

Emergency room out-of-network reimbursement (10% of score): Policies that cover out-of-network emergency room care at 100% (after copay) earned points.

Emergency dental care (10% of score): Points were awarded if emergency dental care coverage was $300 or more.

Do I need travel medical insurance if I have health insurance?

Visitors to the U.S. need travel medical insurance if they want to be reimbursed for medical expenses if they get sick or injured here. Health plans from other countries aren’t usually accepted in the U.S.

You also need travel medical insurance if you are a U.S. citizen taking a trip to another country. U.S.-based health plans will have limited or no coverage in foreign countries, so it’s prudent to consider medical insurance for trips abroad.

Does travel medical insurance cover Covid?

Many travel medical plans cover Covid-related medical expenses, but not all do. For example, the Travel Medical Basic – USA plan by Seven Corners does not cover Covid. Be sure to check the details of your policy to see if Covid is covered like any other illness.

How far in advance should I purchase travel medical insurance if I’m coming to the U.S.?

It’s prudent to purchase travel medical insurance before you get to the U.S., so that you have medical coverage in place. Occasionally a policy will require purchase at least 30 days in advance if you want certain features, such as a rider to cover pre-existing conditions.

Is travel health insurance ever required?

Travel health insurance isn’t required to enter the U.S. Still, it can be a smart purchase so that you don’t end up with thousands of dollars in medical bills after an injury or unexpected illness while you’re visiting the U.S.

What types of travel insurance are available for visitors to the U.S.?

Visitors travel insurance most commonly refers to international travel medical insurance plans designed for non-U.S. citizens who are visiting the U.S. for a period of time—typically less than one year.

There are two main types of visitors travel insurance:

• A limited policy, also called a fixed benefits policy. Fixed benefit plans are more affordable but have limited coverage. These plans have a maximum fixed coverage amount for each medical service or condition.

• A comprehensive policy. Comprehensive plans are more expensive but provide more robust coverage than limited plans.

TD incresed ny home monthly by 50% 6 months after start of contract !!!

This is my 2nd year with TD and never submitted any claims with them. They decide to increase my home insurance monthly payment by more than 50 % 6 months after the start of my second year contract . I have been trying hard to convince them to cancel the contract with no penalties but no answer. People who answer you do not have the authority or the competence to make decisions. A complete disappointment.

Stay away from TD if you have an EV

I would give negative stars if i can. Looking to switch auto and ome insurance after 15+ years. I have an auto claim where i was rear ended by the truck on a hwy and with police report, a few weeks later I still have no proof I am not at fault from TD insurance. I provided the other driver insurance during the initial call. Stalling, not providing information, refusing to communicate in person, email corespondence vague and incorrect and not answering simple questions like apraiser estiamte document that my body shop needs to see why such a big difference in cost estimate. The "best" part is that my adjustor who refuse to provide the apraiser contact and TD cost estimate document, pushes me to the point of being threathening, to repair my brand new EV in the TD body shop that didn't repair a single vehicle model I own. There is only one body shop for my EV in the whole province with licensed tecnhicians for my EV and this adjustor is implying TD will not pay. It looks to me that at least TD auto insurance is lagging behind when it comes to EV vehicle repairs since the repairs also include recalibrations and full system reset that may not be included in the estimate.

I just had a claim with td insurance

I just had a claim with td insurance. I had the worst adjuster ever. Her communication was lacking and she was soo rude. I called her and her call disconnected. She then called Me on a private line and was so rude to me. She said I was racist because I was having a hard time understanding her speech. She then tried to preach the Bible on me and tried to talk me out of being gay. Td hire more professional people. CHARMAINE SHETTLESWORTH BE A HUMAN.

Horrible communication

Our house flooded 3 months ago. We have just had a contractor start, the house is still un-livable. We are on our second advisor and he is worse than the first. There is no communication. Our dog sitter has not been paid in 5 weeks. We don't know from one week to the next where we will be staying as they wait last minute to approve extensions at our airbnb. We can't access our clothes because we can't reach our advisor. We have called his boss and then we get an email but it doesn't last. The people they sent to evaluate and fear down have broken our front door, back door and kitchen window. If I could give them minus stars I would. I am not giving up and will be trying to reach our advisor's boss which I really hate having to do. I would not recommend them. STAY AWAY!

Filed a claim

Filed a claim. The service was so bad. They do not return calls and they do not answer questions. The adjusters were blaming each other and they did not know where our vehicle was. It took 15 days to get vehicle from storage to repair shop

Worst Travel Insurance Ever - Stay way from TD

If I could give negative stars I would. Absolutely the worst customer service experience ever!! I submitted a travel claim with all the proper documentation in August and it's now March and have yet to hear anything about my claim. I call every couple of weeks and am given the run around. This company should not be in business. Shame on TD for partnering with them. It looks very bad on you.

Early home insurance premium deduction

I recently applied for home insurance with TD Insurance. The received policy is to start on February 6, 2024. Contained on the policy is a billing date of February 6, 2024, however my credit was debited on January 8, 2024. How can they take payment for almost a whole month without providing coverage? This does not appear to be fair to me so I have today submitted a complaint to TD Insurance for an explanation. Edit: I am updating my score from 1 to 3 star because TD Insurance called me, even though I requested an email response, and provided an explanation to my complaint. Apparently a policy is billed at the time an online application is made. This was not made clear to me at the time when I made the online application. However, I appreciate that TD Insurance did not ignore my complaint.

Awful Customer Experience... Slime Fest

Moved my home insurance over to TD to bundle with my two vehicles. The first payment was security flagged and by the time I found out and called to rectify 2 weeks later, the TD advisor said that I could only keep the policy by paying for one full year in advance instead of month-to-month. I pushed back to no avail. So, I reluctantly went ahead to avoid ~$500 in penalties that would apply if I cancelled the policies & switched to another insurance provider. The agent was apologetic but ultimately this was a 'mask off' moment and quite frankly I regret bundling my insurance with TD.

HOME INSURANCE CLAIM FOR TORNADO DAMAGE

HOME INSURANCE CLAIM FOR TORNADO DAMAGE My property was damaged during by a tornado which occurred in May 2022 in Bell's Corners, Ottawa. The claim involved the removal of two damaged trees and replacement of the roof. The biggest complain I have was having to go through 5 different claim assessor during the whole process (TD hired temporary help to go through the large number of claims that resulted from the storm). This resulted in information being lost between assessors. But despite a few screw-ups, TD ultimately honored their insurance and paid up for all damages, minus the $2000 deductible which was part of my insurance package. I think you only really find out how good (or bad) your insurance provider is when YOU call THEM to make a claim. The process was not smooth, in large part because my file was shuffled from assessor to assessor. But in the end, TD paid up and that is what ultimately matters.

Deal with this company was in the end…

Deal with this company was in the end great. My claim of travel cancellation due to sickness was accepted and they refunded the money as soon as I submitted the whole documentation need it. Initially, I was a little frustrated but in the end, I realize this was a hectic process. My claim took 3 months. I got the travel insurance through Td visa aeroplan infinite and I highly recommend it

Submitted an auto claim - disaster!

Submitted an auto claim, website makes it sound like a concierge service. Nothing could be further from the truth! Passed from department to department, only given 1 email for contact at any time. If they choose to ignore you for a week at a time, that's your problem. Calls constantly go to voicemail - agents do not call back. To actually talk to a person means you are on hold for 30-90 minutes - this is with a filed claim. Sent us a pay out document only to be told a week later that the numbers were inaccurate an we owned money back and the initial agreement (signed) was not valid. Asked to speak to another advisor (note you get one, no one else will talk to you), was told a manager would call me back today, didn't happen. Mechanic is asking us what is going on! All we know is that our pay out has been rescinded and no one will get back to us. There is a complaint system, but you need to reach a conclusion with the department you are talking to, who are not willing to communicate.

I went online to get a quote for home insurance…

I went online to get a quote for home insurance (already have car insurance). The computer told me to enter my address. I did several times and it told me each time to enter a valid address. I tried calling and the automated voice would not accept my birthdate. I tried calling my TD bank branch in Fredericton and was treated as a total idiot. "Did you put in your correct address, (TD has been sending my bank statements here for 35 years) did you give them your real birthdate?" I asked for a Tel # that I could speak to someone and got the same phone numbers I had already tried. I am so fed up I am cancelling everything with TD. I know I am a senior but they treated me like I was totally stupid. They are Ignorant, disrespectful and downright rude.

Customer experience - on a downward spiral

I have 2 policies with TD that renew at different times. For the ease of renewal, I have a valid CC on file. One policy was automatically renewed using the CC on file but the other was not. Why the 2nd policy was not automatically renewed using the CC file remains a mystery. TD instead thought it wiser to send me threatening letters (by post! regular and registered) without considering the fact that I may be out of country and cannot receive/see any mailed correspondence. In addition, I agree their premiums are also beginning to go up and I'm not likely to renew any of my policies going forward with them. And even if their premiums are competitive, their customer service sucks! And that's enough to still make switch.

After years as loyal customer with TD…

After years as loyal customer with TD Home and Auto Insurance without any claim, they doubled the value of my house to double my premium, even if my house doesn't worth the new value of TD, I just changed TD to another company to save a lot of money. I don't recommend TD.

Worst TD travel insurance service - GlobalExcel

I reported a medical claim during my travel at the beginning of January 2023 with my TD First Class Travel Visa and waited for 1.5 hours to get the phone answered. They didn't want to take time to record my claim and just transferred me to another line which never got answered by anyone. I had to file a claim online later but never heard anything back after submitting all documents except a confirmation email that said the files were received. There's no other way to contact TD Insurance/Global Excel except by phone call which takes about 1 hour to wait. This is very disappointing. I will cancel my card and move to another bank.

Date of experience : January 01, 2023

Poor communication and processing; untimely

I filed a modest claim for trip delay expenses, and months later received an emailed letter stating there was missing information. I called Global Excel to see what was missing, as all receipts and filings had been done, and was advised to call TD for verification of coverage. Upon doing so, the TD agent referred me back to Global, stating they don't do that. Likely the hang-up in the system was caused by a change in my Visa number after the trip purchase, but that shouldn't leave me without a way to get reimbursement. Long hold times, nice agents, but no progress after being ping-ponged between Global and TD. Currently on hold and re-evaluating my credit card loyalty.

Date of experience : January 26, 2023

Poor knowledge, high prices

I needed a car insurance, so I got a quote online. I tried to call, because I wanted a trailer insured as well, but could hardly understand the person due to extremely poor sound quality. In addition, the representative had poor knowledge of even the very basics, telling me that a G licence is not a full licence (false) and that they can't take my 30-year experince into account if I have a G licence. Then I was cut off on their end and they never called me back, which is just as well, as I have absilutely no reson to deal with them. The rate quoted was double of the next company I called. The automated answering system is absolutely useless, it does not understand even clearly spoken English and makes it virtually impossible to get through to a representative. There are just too many red flags with this company. I tried to call the claim department, which shoudl be open 24/7, only to be told that their office closes at 4pm. I thikn the automated system is misdirecting calls to the regular office, so good luck calling your insurance in the case of an accident after business hours.

Date of experience : June 01, 2023

Horrible to deal with and expensive

Horrible to deal with and expensive. All their jobs shipped to India, so always speaking with people who's first language is not English (which may be part of the problem). They have no interest in you as a long-term client, just short-term transactional focused. We were home+auto customers for 18+ years but the rates kept creeping higher and higher than competition. They act offended when you ask them to lower their rates to at least competitive levels. After you cancel they deny you cancelled, and will bill you for time you were insurance with someone else. (We asked them to play back the call where we cancelled but they can't find the call..which they say they record "quality assurance"). Then they send that bill to collections to affect your credit rating (even though they can see you were covered by a different carrier). Then they mark you as a 'delinquent' customer on database shared with other insurers which doubles all your insurance rates. I made countless calls to them but no one seems to care. I am fighting with a debt collector now, and the internal insurance "customer" database. They just want your money, anything else they just forward you around the call center. TD used to be a good company, but this is not the same company it was 20 years ago. Look elsewhere. In my opinion TD Insurance has become a fly-by-night Indian insurance company with poor ethics, poor customer service, high rates, and terrible business practices.

Disappointed, angry and taken advantage of by TD Insurance

I've purchased TD Insurance for my Condo for the past 6 years. The renewal letter and rate for May 31, 2023 showed the annual premium had increased by 53%. I went online to make changes (reduce coverage) and was not successful, so I phoned. I was told I could not Decrease the insurance! So I paid the premium that was on my renewal letter. I then received in the Mail, a bill for an additional $46. that I wanted to dispute... they have NO Email and the chat bot was useless. Needless to say, they got me this year, but Never Again.
