Diving into the depths of the Carmel Market and the backstreets of its neighboring historic Yemenite quarter, we learn about the development of Israeli cuisine through the country's history and how four generations of vendors are able to maintain their shops after almost 100 years. We will hear stories from vendors whose families were the first in the market to new shops revitalizing the hip neighborhood. Our 7+ tastings will include some of the country's freshest hummus, street food, produce, baked goods and Yemenite cuisine.

Welcome to Tel Aviv's foodie paradise! Join us for a grazing tour of the market to enjoy 7+ delicacies in an area best known for its Turkish, Greek and Persian immigrant heritage, dating back to the 1920s.

Today, gourmet chefs visit Levinsky's timeless shops for their fresh spices, dried fruits, hand-roasted coffees and deli goodies. We will visit grandfathers at their third- and fourth-generation shops as well as young and inspired trendy spots bringing a new vibe to this hipster-forward neighborhood.

Eat Tel Aviv

Length of tour: 4.5 hours, jaffa port → carmel market.

Join us for a walk (long, but relatively flat) that weaves its way from the historic Jaffa Port to the diverse neighborhoods of Jaffa and Tel Aviv. Through the lens of food, we learn about the history and development of the Israeli culinary scene. Throughout the tour we will taste 10+ different delicacies, ranging from hummus at Israel's top hole-in-the-wall to street food to modern gastronomy. We will explore the neighborhoods of the Jaffa Flea Market, Neve Tzedek and cap off the tour in the Yemenite quarter and Carmel Market to taste what's in season. While a camera is highly suggested, the only thing we require of guests is that they come prepared with a big appetite (i.e., please eat a light breakfast ☺)!

The Carmel Market, stretching southwards from Allenby St. to less than a km from the Inter Continental David Hotel, is the largest and busiest market in Tel Aviv - or in Israel for that matter. Spices, pickled treats, fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, meat and fish, household goods, baking goods and more: quantities are enormous and the prices are low.

Rub shoulders with a cross-section of Israel in this market’s crowded and bustling streets and lanes; enjoy the stall vendors as they pitch their wares. You may not understand the language, but there's no escaping the exuberance. It is the essence of Tel Aviv’s Middle Eastern character and also the place to find excellent bargains.

Savor the noise, smells and excitement. The friendly vendors best patter in Hebrew, usually praising their goods, but will also enjoy babbling in English, or bits and pieces of other languages if they notice a visitor and guess where he or she is from.

 Exploring the market for its local fast food counters and range of informal restaurants can make any visit to that more enjoyable, and combining it with a tour of the adjoining Yemenite Quarter (“Kerem HaTemanim”), which offers an excellent choice of casual ethnic restaurants for dining throughout the day - a sense of Tel Aviv from before the time the city was even founded - will only enhance the experience.

About Jon's Carmel Market Cooking Class & Food Tour

This cooking class experience all together will present you to a cultural adventure which reflects the Israeli mentality to its fullest. The Carmel Market tour will leave you with a feeling you were a part of the market and not an outsider taking a look. At the workshop there is a rare atmosphere, it can't be described only felt. There you’ll cook authentic Israeli food from scratch.

Carmel market 10:00 AM We will meet at 10 AM at the entrance of the Carmel market.  

Shop for ingredients 10:00 AM - 11:00 PM We will shop for ingredients for our cooking class as well as taste some stuff at the market for about one hour.  

Cooking class studio 11:00 PM - 2:00 PM Then we will take a short walk to my studio where we will learn how to cook.

Cooking a 7-course meal

Beer wine   and cocktails.

And dessert of course

We will be finished at approximately 2:00 PM - 2:30 PM After dessert.

Essell Studio

You'll find Essell Studio in an industrial-chic space that offers a slick contrast to its location in Tel Aviv's historic Yafo neighborhood. Here, a selection of men's and women's fashion and accessories, art, and collectibles for the home has been thoughtfully curated and arranged in the space. There are contemporary pieces from contemporary labels (Miu Miu, Moschino, Docle and Gabbana) from the ’90s to present, but there are also pieces from the ’60s-’80s.

Lulu Vintage

You'll find the cozy but well-stocked Lulu Vintage in Yafo, where vintage and secondhand designer pieces intermingle with more contemporary brands. Pop Crimes Vintage

Here's a vintage store with a distinct point of view. Don't expect TikTok-ready ’90s throwbacks at Pop Crimes. Instead, you'll find sophisticated boho pieces—think Brooklyn-meets-Tel Aviv-meets cottage core. The dreamy space, which is well-designed with plants, rugs, and antique decor, sells cotton maxi dresses, oversized blazers, and vintage belts.

Seekers Vintage

No, you're not in the Midwest; you're at Seekers Vintage! At this boutique, founded by Daniel Bar-On in 2017, you'll find pre-owned and vintage designer pieces, lots of denim, and a wide assortment of accessories. The vibe? Totally Americana—think oodles of Levi’s and snap-button shirts. Plus, there are sneakers, men's jerseys, and leather goods. And did we mention the cowboy boots?

Former Israeli model Micky Mamon runs a vintage store out of her home in Tel Aviv and the pieces are just as serious as the runways she once walked. She offers both vintage and more recent secondhand fashions.

Vintage Me Up

Vintage Me Up is an event series run by Elad Hoffman (considered Mr. Vintage in Israel). Every three or four months, vendors from around Israel come to Tel Aviv for a multi-day fair. After the fair's success, Elad opened a Vintage Me Up shop for a steady rotation of pop-ups for vintage vendors from around the country. The merch keeps rotating, and so do the details—check the Instagram account to stay up to date on how, where, and when to shop.

Market at Givon Square

Every Friday, flea market vendors from all around the country come to Givon Square in Tel Aviv to set up shop for the day.
