The Kooks: Inside In/Inside Out 15th Anniversary Tour, Festival Hall, Melbourne, October 6, 2022 – Live Review
Celebrating their 15th anniversary of their iconic debut album ‘ Inside In/Inside Out ’ (really their 16th due to Covid delays), The Kooks finally took to the stage at Melbourne’s Festival Hall for an intimate celebration of an album that helped shape their career and their journey thus far.
Admittedly, I hadn’t initially listened to their album when it was first released in 2006. Shameful, I know. But there is always a music artist that you discover much later and still fall in love with, and for me, that is The Kooks .
Taking to the stage to a keen, diverse Melbourne audience, Luke Pritchard came out first with an acoustic guitar to serenade every ear he could reach with ‘Seaside’ . Pritchard ’s clear and beautiful vocals instantly enchanted the entirety of the venue, to the point that when he was joined by his fellow bandmates; Hugh Harris on the keyboard and guitar, Jonathan Harvey on the bass, and Alexis Nunez on the drums, the crowd were already eating out of the palm of his hand.
As this tour is in celebration of ‘Inside In/Inside Out’ with majority of the setlist from that album; ‘See The World’ , ‘Ooh La’ , and ‘She Moves In Her Own Way’ , I found that the gems of the night weren’t actually from the debut album. ‘Bad Habit’ is already phenomenal with its melody, harmonisation, the way the drums kick in, and how every instrument and every vocal of the track comes together to create magic. I daresay, it is even better when performed live. ‘Do You Wanna’ oozes excellence with its catchy question and guitar riffs, and the song ‘Connection’ from The Kooks ’ latest and sixth studio album ‘10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark’ was also excellent live as it showcased Pritchard ’s incredible mutant lungs ( this is a compliment ), leaving many in the audience in awe.
Over the last few days of my Kooks education, I learnt very quickly that part of The Kooks ’ charm is that lyrically everything is simple, straightforward, and honest, but also extremely eloquent, heartfelt, and poetic. Their songs are so well written, yet super catchy, and are never too difficult to learn or be captivated by, whether it be an impressive guitar riff or the sweet melody of a chorus. Although these songs that kickstarted The Kooks ’ career continue to provide fun nostalgia trips to both fans and the band alike, while they have grown, The Kooks have never lost their identity and their unique sound.
Regardless of whether a song was new or old on the setlist, everything felt consistent and seamless. If I didn’t know any better, you could have fooled me that they were all part of the same album. And while most are, there is a clear consistency and sincerity to The Kooks ’ music and evolution that I haven’t seen in most artists these days. This is among the many reasons on why this band is so beloved.
Overjoyed, for some fans, like me, this was their first time seeing The Kooks perform live. For others, this performance may have been their first concert coming out of the Covid restriction era. For everyone, witnessing The Kooks live was pure joy. Like a choir and almost religious experience, everyone was happy swaying, dancing, bopping along and singing to every number. While lyrically stunning, their songs are also very upbeat and uplifting. Even ‘You Don’t Love Me’ despite it’s serious, painful and romantic undertones, the still somehow left me beaming.
Disappearing from the stage momentarily around the end of the set. The Melbourne audience stomped their feet together on the Festival Hall floor to create a thunderous call for The Kooks to return. I could feel the floor move, like a mini earthquake, but instead of fear, it was filled with a united love for the incredible English pop-rock band. The Kooks acknowledged the atmosphere too, sharing that the energy in venue and performing in Melbourne felt like they were ‘coming home’ . This soon followed with their final and most famous number ‘Naïve’ , which inspired the Melbourne audience to erupt with happiness.
As a new fan, I was surprised by how diverse the crowd was, and yet when we were all singing along to the same songs, I was reminded that we weren’t so different after all. It didn’t matter if you were a new or old, we were just having a good time (no pressure, but pun intended). To quote The Kooks themselves, “I wanna make you happy” , and they most certainly did.

The Kooks are set to celebrate their debut album with a 2022 UK tour.
The Brighton outfit will mark 15 years since Inside In/Inside Out was released with gigs which will take them across the country and include two dates at The 02 Academy Brixton.
Fans can sign up to the O2 and presale ticket sale via The Kooks website, with tickets which will go on sale on Wednesday 26 May from 9am.
Meanwhile, general sale tickets will go on sale from Friday 28 May at 9am from www.gigsandtours.com , www.ticketmaster.co.uk and www.thekooks.com .

Luke Pritchard said of the news: "After this long hibernation we are so excited to finally announce a tour in 2022 to celebrate 15 years of our first record ‘inside in/inside out’. We wanted to play all the songs from the album along with some fan favourites spanning our entire career as a thank you to our fans for all the love that’s kept the album alive, growing and finding new ears since we put it out in the noughties. The Kooks' debut album was released on 23 January 2006 with singles which included Sofa Song, Ooh La , You Don't Love Me, She Moves in Her Own Wa y and Naive.
The record, which reached number two in the UK album charts, is among the most-loved indie albums of the noughties, reaching quadruple-platinum when it was released and in recently years, thanks to streaming, growing a whole new cult following.

The Kooks just announced that they're heading back to the US, "the first time in a long time", in celebration of their iconic debut album "Inside In/Inside Out". The British pop-rockers are all set to perform the acclaimed album in its entirety at every stop for its 15th anniversary. They're also bringing along a special guest, The Vaccines, who also happens to be celebrating their new record, "Pick-Up Full Of Pink Carnations". Back in 2021, The Kooks released a 15th Anniversary deluxe edition reissue of their debut record, including bonus tracks featuring alternate takes and demos. This time around, everyone's in for a live treat.
"Inside In/Inside Out" is definitely one heck of a banger, striking the feels of every teenager-at-heart going through life's pains, it spoke to listeners on a whole other level. Though the record coincided with the massive release and media attention to Artic Monkeys' debut "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not", The Kooks' debut offering entered the UK Albums Chart at #9 and peaked at #2. The hit record went on to become certified 5x Platinum by the BPI, with sales crossing over 1.5 million records.
In a revisit by uDiscoverMusic, "These are anthems for the coming-of-age listener, driven by love, lust, and infatuation," wrote Harriot Smith. The record definitely tackles jarring adolescent reflections with the album's unique energy and vibe. "Inside In/Inside Out" shares memorable hits and fan favorites including "Time Awaits", "Sofa Song", "You Don't Love Me", "She Moves in Her Own Way", "Ooh La", and "Naïve".
The record definitely remains to be a hard-hitter, something that generations of listeners will find themselves to keep relating to. Smith continued to write "It’s impressive to hear how relatable it all still sounds. Multiple generations have now come to Inside In/Inside Out, and still feel its power," sharing how its tracks such as "25" still share the same nostalgic force to the youth.
Though the record was met with a few setbacks by critics such as Pitchfork describing the album as "youthful overconfidence" and a lack of direction at the time, Inside In/Inside Out's success wasn't about the technicalities of producing a "perfect" debut. It's about the power that music holds to influence and strike the feels.
"We didn’t sit down with a blueprint," frontman Pritchard shared in an interview with Sunday Business Post in 2008. "We just naturally developed and we didn’t try to shape or mould ourselves to anything.." Hopping into the studio with a multitude of tracks inspired by a variety of genres, the record just fell into place, albeit with an "incredible amount of patience" from their producer Tony Hoffer.
An album that divided critics' opinions, some praising its exploration and uniqueness while some targeting its sonic disorganization, The Kooks proved that great music isn't about appeasing critics or putting out perfect melodies. It's about every listener being able to relate and feel every message weaved by the band.

The Kooks have announced that they’ll be coming to the United States for “the first time in a long time” for a 16-stop 2024 tour with The Vaccines .
Kicking off on February 29th with a performance in Atlanta, the tour will will take the two beloved British alt bands to cities like Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more, with The Kooks indicating that they’ll play their seminal debut album, Inside In / Inside Out , in its entirety at each stop in celebration of its 15th anniversary. Tickets for the shows go on sale to the general public via Ticketmaster on Friday, October 13th, at 10:00 a.m. local time, following a Live Nation pre-sale which opens on Thursday, October 12th, at 10:00 a.m. local time (use access code VOCALS ). Once tickets are on sale, you can also find them at StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program.
Joining The Kooks for the duration of the tour will be The Vaccines, who are currently gearing up to release their sixth studio album, Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations on January 12th via Thirty Tigers. On Wednesday, October 11th, they shared the album’s latest single, “Sometimes, I Swear,” a cathartic tune that grapples with the deep questions of life, over a soundscape of guitars, of course.
Speaking about the new single, The Vaccines’ lead singer Justin Young said: “Like many songs before it, ‘Sometimes, I Swear’ began life as Tim [Lanham, keyboardist] and I sat on my sofa in London. I don’t think there are many places on the planet where I feel so at peace as sitting in my own home, but even there I constantly question my place in the world. I think the innate human need to be part of something — to connect with each other in a community or a congregation — is what keeps driving us forward and searching for meaning. Inside In/Inside Out is, without a doubt, the best set of anthems for anyone experiencing growing pains. Centered around the complex emotions almost every teenager encounters, The Kooks’ debut album was bound to be a hit. Back when it was first released, a Pitchfork review described the album as “youthful overconfidence” and lacking a sense of direction. This exact sentiment is why the album remains so compelling today.

The Kooks released Inside In/Inside Out in January 2006. It was an immediate hit, landing the No.2 spot in the UK Albums Chart for two weeks. The band itself had only formed a year prior to the recording of the album. (Their name came from the group’s mutual admiration for Hunky Dory -era Bowie.) In 2005, they recorded their first demo, focused on landing gigs. But after being scouted at the Brighton Free Butt Festival, they quickly signed to Virgin and recorded their debut album.

Beloved Brighton indie band The Kooks are heading back to Australia, playing a stack of dates across the country this Autumn. Presented by XIII Touring and Untitled Group, the band will bring their huge back catalogue of epic singalong hits to Melbourne , Brisbane , Sydney and Perth alongside their Groovin the Moo festival run.
These dates mark The Kooks’ return to our shores after a sold-out run in 2022 celebrating the 15th anniversary of their debut album Inside In/Inside Out .

The Kooks just announced a huge 15th-anniversary tour of their debut album Inside In/Inside Out – with a special Leeds Valentine’s date.
The staple indie soundtrack that defined a whole generation will be back out on the road next year, giving fans a chance to hear all the old classics live again.
Known for hits such as ‘She Moves in Her Own Way’, ‘You Don’t Love Me’ and the top-five single ‘Naive’, the pillars of the UK indie-pop world have amassed over 1 billion streams across multiple platforms
Since their debut dropped, they’ve released four further LPs – with their most recent ‘Let’s Go Sunshine’ achieving top ten status.
Taking place from January 2022 onwards, the 15th-anniversary tour includes ten dates all across the UK including one at Leeds O2 Academy on 14th February.
Fans will have to sign up via The Kooks website to join the presale on the 26th of May, with the general sale to the public taking place on the 28 th .
“We wanted to play all the songs from the album along with some fan favorites spanning our entire career as a thank you to our fans for all the love that’s kept the album alive, growing and finding new ears since we put it out in the noughties.
“We are so excited to get playing again!”

The Kooks Announce US Tour with The Vaccines
Celebrating 15 years of The Kooks' Inside In / Inside Out as well as The Vaccines' new album
The Kooks have announced that they’ll be coming to the United States for “the first time in a long time” for a 16-stop 2024 tour with The Vaccines .
Kicking off on February 29th with a performance in Atlanta, the tour will will take the two beloved British alt bands to cities like Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more, with The Kooks indicating that they’ll play their seminal debut album, Inside In / Inside Out , in its entirety at each stop in celebration of its 15th anniversary. Tickets for the shows go on sale to the general public via Ticketmaster on Friday, October 13th, at 10:00 a.m. local time, following a Live Nation pre-sale which opens on Thursday, October 12th, at 10:00 a.m. local time (use access code VOCALS ). Once tickets are on sale, you can also find them at StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program.
Joining The Kooks for the duration of the tour will be The Vaccines, who are currently gearing up to release their sixth studio album, Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations on January 12th via Thirty Tigers. On Wednesday, October 11th, they shared the album’s latest single, “Sometimes, I Swear,” a cathartic tune that grapples with the deep questions of life, over a soundscape of guitars, of course.
Speaking about the new single, The Vaccines’ lead singer Justin Young said: “Like many songs before it, ‘Sometimes, I Swear’ began life as Tim [Lanham, keyboardist] and I sat on my sofa in London. I don’t think there are many places on the planet where I feel so at peace as sitting in my own home, but even there I constantly question my place in the world. I think the innate human need to be part of something — to connect with each other in a community or a congregation — is what keeps driving us forward and searching for meaning. It’s something many of us struggle with on a daily basis, but I hope when people hear this song they’ll feel less alone in that struggle.” Pre-orders for Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations are ongoing.

15th anniversary tour and reissue. To mark the 15th anniversary of Inside In/Inside Out, on 21 May 2021 The Kooks announced a January-February 2022 tour of the U.K. and Ireland in which the band's current line-up would perform the album in full. After the initial announcement, the band added more dates to the tour.

Celebrating their 15th anniversary of their iconic debut album 'Inside In/Inside Out' (really their 16th due to Covid delays), The Kooks finally took to the stage at Melbourne's Festival Hall for an intimate celebration of an album that helped shape their career and their journey thus far. Admittedly, I hadn't initially listened to their album when it was first released in 2006.
