As a veteran of the iconic Vans Warped Tour, I absolutely could not believe it when an epic event was announced: When We Were Young Festival in Las Vegas. I was there at the first edition in 2022 and had such a great time that I returned in 2023 (and I’ll be back in 2024). So I can share my experience with you.

Here are all the details about the When We Were Young (WWWY) Festival in Las Vegas.

Overview — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas

Here are the basics :

• Annual music festival
• Emo/punk/pop-punk music
• 1-day festival with multiple dates
• Around 80,000 attendees per day
• 50+ bands on 4 stages
• At the Las Vegas Festival Grounds
• Held every year since 2022
• There was an edition in 2017 that was very different

Here are the basics of the 2024 edition of When We Were Young Festival:

• October 19, 2024 AND October 20, 2024
• Special full album sets (with a few exceptions)
• Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance as headliners
• US$325 for General Admission
• US$550 for GA +

Here are the logistics of traveling for When We Were Young:

• Flights to Las Vegas (LAS) are usually very affordable 
• Start looking early to seize a good flight deal
• Hotels can be pricey (and don’t forget the shitty resort fees )
• It’s easy to get around if you stay in the Strip area, including downtown
• Any other location will involve pricey Ubers or pricey parking for a rental car
• Food options in Vegas can be very cheap if you know where to go
• There are plenty of other attractions in Vegas, even if you don’t like gambling

Here are the basics of traveling for any festival or event:

• Don’t fly the day of (even the day before is risky depending on the airline)
• Plan a buffer in case of a postponement or cancelation (#WindWeWereYoung)
• It’s almost always cheaper to book flights and hotels on your own
• Hotels will be more expensive due to the festival
• Book hotels as early as possible
• They’re almost always fully refundable if plans change or prices go down

Basics — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas 

When We Were Young is an emo/punk/pop-punk music festival that is organized by Live Nation, one of the biggest companies in this industry.

The festival broke the internet when it was first announced in early 2022. There were so many amazing bands that it seemed too good to be true. After the Fyre Festival scam , so many were skeptical. I almost had to pinch myself, too, when I saw all the band names.

It was true, and it was very good. It has been described as the Woodstock for the emo scene. It was so popular they added 2 days. It has been quite the phenomenon. It returned in 2023, albeit for 2 days instead of 3. It’s now back for 2024.

WWWY is a one-day music festival that offers 2 possible dates to choose from. To be clear, the dates are ticketed separately and are just duplicate dates — all bands play all dates.

Dates — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas 

The 2024 edition takes place Saturday, October 19, and Sunday, October 20. All editions have always taken place on weekends.

Location — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas 

The 2024 edition, like the 2 previous ones, takes place at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds.

That is located directly on the Las Vegas Strip, at the very north end of the Strip, opposite the SAHARA Las Vegas. Fun fact: the Strip isn’t technically in Las Vegas, Nevada. The festival, therefore, takes place in Winchester, Nevada.

Lineup — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas 

In 2024, there’s a new theme: almost all bands will be playing a full album.

In 2022 and 2023, most bands got a 30-minute set, while the headliners played longer sets. I’m really not sure how the logistics will work out for 2024 with the full album concept. The precise schedule is always announced in advance so you can plan out your day.

I included the 2022 and 2023 posters at the bottom of this guide if you’re interested in past lineups.

Tickets — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas 

This is the 1st year that tickets haven’t sold out instantly. You can still buy official tickets  for Day 2 on the When We Were Young Festival website .

Both years, I ended up going with resale tickets I bought on those websites the day of or the day before, for a lot cheaper than face value. But I’m more risk-tolerant than most, and there really is no guarantee that the prices will be lower.

Hours — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas

The first concerts usually start just before noon and end just before midnight, for a solid and intense 12 hours of epic music.

Doors usually open 1 hour before the first show. 

Access — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas

The main entrance is located on Las Vegas Boulevard, just north of the Hilton Grand Vacations Club on the Las Vegas Strip.

If you’re staying relatively close, the simplest option is really to walk. If you’re further, the Las Vegas Monorail can take you all the way to the SAHARA across the street.

The best way to get around the Strip is The Deuce double-decker bus. It goes up and down the Strip continually 24 hours a day, every 15 minutes. It is very affordable. 

If you use Uber/Lyft/taxis, there is a designated dropoff area but it can get pretty chaotic as you’d expect. It might be faster to ask to be dropped off a little further away from the actual official spot.

If you are driving, there is no parking at the venue. Casino resorts around the venue offer paid parking.

Entry — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas

Lineups and wait times to get into the general admission area can be lengthy, so be there early if you want to catch the first bands.

In past years, there has been a priority lane for those who had their tickets on their Google Pixel phone’s Google Wallet. But that didn’t work with resale tickets — and honestly, it didn’t seem to be that much faster than regular lanes.

There are multiple stages to enter the venue: security check (they don’t really look at bags thoroughly, but they could ), ID check (if you wat a bracelet to get alcohol inside), and then finally the ticket scan.

You are allowed re-entry during the entire day, but just make sure you get a bracelet upon exit.

Layout — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas

The Las Vegas Festival Grounds is a pretty big venue and apart from the main stage area, didn’t feel too crowded despite the astonishing number of music lovers in attendance.

Here’s what the set-up looked like in 2023, which was a bit different than 2022 so there could be some changes.

Stages — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas

The 2 main stages are in the northeast corner, side by side. Bands alternate on both stages for minimal downtime in between sets.

The 2 other stages in 2023 are a quick walk away, along the northwest corner of the venue. These are further apart and in a slightly different orientation, so bands would play simultaneously on these.

Unless you go to the very front of the main stages area, it’s really easy to move around to go to the other stages: I must have went from one to the other a dozen times effortlessly in both years.

Shade — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas

There are designated areas for shade and even misty water sprays, which is particularly useful in the sunny afternoon hours.

Don’t let the desert setting fool you though: at night, Las Vegas can be very cold. I was freezing in 2022, whereas 2023 was okay at night (and very hot during the day). Both were on the 3rd weekend of October so the weather can vary really quite a bit in Vegas.

Merchandise  — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas

Lineups for merchandise were positively insane both years. I didn’t even bother trying to get some and miss out on so many bands due to the hour-long wait. But the merchandise booths are at least all conveniently located in one spot.

Food — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas

Food is expensive, as is the case in all festivals. Among your options, there are tacos, burgers, fries, pulled pork sandwiches, pizza, chicken fingers, turkey drumsticks, etc. A variety of vendors are on location, so the quality really depends on what you choose.

As for beverages, water is offered for free throughout the venue. Alcohol and soft drinks were readily available in multiple booths. I’m a sparkling water enthusiast, so I can tell you a large can of Liquid Death was $5.

Activations — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas

There were plenty of brand activations and various booths if you wanted a break from the music.

For example, in 2023 Tony Hawk came out to skateboard at the X Games section.

There was a Google booth where you could create your own album cover, among other things.

There are also spaces to just chill.

There was a Netflix booth.

Restrooms — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas

There were plenty of restrooms near each stage, and at least as a male, there really wasn’t much of a wait to use them.

VIP experience — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas

If you want to splurge, the VIP tickets come with special designated areas at each stage.

Lodging — When We Were Young Festival Las Vegas

There is no shortage of hotels on the Las Vegas Strip or very close to it. If you’re like me and prefer a slightly less touristy experience than the artificiality of the Strip, there are also plenty of options. Don’t miss our guide soon .

It was the best festival I have ever been to. It was quite the adventure too, as I held tickets for all 3 days at some point.

At first, I got tickets for Day 3, thinking bands and logistics would be better after 2 trial runs. But then I was invited to speak at travel rewards conference on that date, so I changed to Day 1 because they were the cheapest.

Then, Day 1 was canceled an hour before the doors opened, to our collective dismay. I got a refund at least. But resale prices for Day 2 immediately skyrocketed and were over $1000 for general admission (I had paid $250 for my original tickets).

I waited for Day 2, withdrew $400 cash at the ATM (with my Wise Debit Card ), headed to the venue, and scoured the Facebook groups for available tickets. I couldn’t believe it when I found someone willing to sell me a ticket for $100 at the door!!! I ended up saving money and still getting in. It was perfect.

The ultimate guide to When We Were Young festival

The emo and pop punk fest returns this weekend with Blink-182, Green Day and more.

The T-shirts said it all: “Emo’s not dead,” “Make America emo again,” “Every nite is emo nite,” “Sad music.”

And that pretty much encapsulates When We Were Young, where those shirts were spotted last fall.

This weekend, the two-day emo- and pop punk-leaning fest returns to the Las Vegas Festival Grounds after three sold-out shows last October. (The first day was ultimately canceled because of high winds.)

Here’s a paradox, though: How can emos sustain their trademark sadness amid more than 60 bands playing each day, offering the concert equivalent of an all-you-can-eat buffet of pleading vocals, endless breakup songs and tunes that soundtracked many a high school prom circa 2004?

Ah well, you might as well just show up and have a great time. Here’s your guide to doing so:

How to get there

There’s no parking at the venue, and with most of the nearby casinos limiting their parking garages to guests only during the festival, you’ll have to rideshare or perhaps attach a household cooling device to your back and parachute into the place “Fan Man”-style. (Go ahead and laugh, it’s been done before in these parts.)

Pro tip for locals: Park at a casino at the south end of the Strip (MGM Grand, Flamingo, Horseshoe) and take the monorail to the Sahara right across the street from the venue.

What should you wear?

Rhetorical question.

We all know you’re going to come dressed head to toe in black, looking like one of Something Corporate’s piano keys incarnate.

Just remember, it starts getting cold at night right about now.

At When We Were Young last year, temperatures dipped into the high 40s on the fest’s opening weekend, causing some fans to crowd around a fire-spewing octopus art installation for heat on Sunday night.

At a festival that’s all about wearing your heart on your sleeve, it might be wise to make sure those sleeves are attached to a hoodie.

How will you see every band you want to see?

Well, you might not.

With so many bands playing on five stages, often simultaneously, there are bound to be conflicts that are enough to make an emo even more melancholic somehow, which is kind of like finding a way to make water more wet.

Still, the fest is set up to minimize said conflicts: The two main stages are positioned right next to each other, with one band getting ready to perform as another one plays nearby, so there’s no downtime between sets and you can stand in one spot and see both stages.

Also, the smaller stages rotate. So again, bands can ready themselves to perform while another plays, limiting downtime.

You might not be able to see everything , but you can still see a lot.

10 bands not to miss

■ Blink-182: The alternately puerile and zeppelin-hearted pop punk favorites play Vegas for the first time in a decade with singer-guitarist Tom Delonge, who rejoined the band this year. Expect the diarrhea jokes to flow from the stage like, well, you know …

■ Green Day : Start learning the chords to Operation Ivy’s “Knowledge” now: Green Day has been bringing up a fan from the crowd to play the ska-punk classic at its shows for years now.

■ Sum 41: This may be your last chance to see the once-hard-partying pop punk troupe. Sum 41 announced that it’s calling it a day after a farewell album and tour.

■ Thrice : The SoCal quartet is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its third and best-selling album, “The Artist in the Ambulance,” which is among the most definitive post-punk records of the early aughts.

■ The Front Bottoms : Laugh till you cry with this spirit-boosting folk punk duo (which expands its lineup live). The group’s songbook is equally wry and winsome, a good-time-in-waiting with tunes often delivered with a wink.

■ Beach Bunny : Beach Bunny frontwoman Lili Trifilio dissects her self-doubts in song in such open, infectious fashion, it almost makes insecurity endearing. We’re calling it now: The indie popsters’ “Prom Queen” will inspire one of the most full-throated crowd singalongs of the weekend.

■ Joyce Manor : Most of this acclaimed pop punk trio’s albums clock in around 20 minutes or less, which means they can pack a whole lot of hooks and heartache into a half-hour set.

■ Michelle Branch: This veteran singer-songwriter feels like some welcome counterprogramming here. She’s plenty emotive, if not exactly emo. Does that count?

■ The Offspring : Don’t be a sucker with low self-esteem and miss your chance to shout along to one ’90s punk anthem after the next when The Offspring air plenty of MTV staples from back when Furbies were still a thing.

■ Thirty Seconds to Mars: These Jared Leto-fronted rockers collaborated with Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds on a song from their new record, “It’s the End of the World but It’s a Beautiful Day.” Maybe Reynolds will join the band on stage in his hometown? Probably not, but perhaps you can find a way to corner Leto and get him to sign your “Morbius” poster.

What to do before/after the fest

You mean aside from stocking up on waterproof mascara?

Well, in addition to the fest itself, a number of sideshows affiliated with the event are taking place at various venues around town, because, you know, 60-plus bands and 12 to 13 hours of music in one day is merely an appetizer of sadness.

Fit for a King and The Devil Wears Prada, House of Blues at Mandalay Bay, 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

■ Something Corporate , House of Blues at Mandalay Bay, 7:30 p.m. Friday.

■ All Time Low , The Pearl at the Palms, 8 p.m. Friday.

■ Sum 41 , Brooklyn Bowl at the Linq Promenade, 8 p.m. Friday.

■ Emo Night Brooklyn with special guests, Brooklyn Bowl, 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

When We Were Young Merch Review

Since Vans Warped Tour's closure last year, alternative music fans have expressed concern as to whether another event can provide the same sense of community for fans. Enter When We Were Young Festival; already it's becoming a hit due to its unrivaled lineups. Over 6,000 self-described "elder emos" gathered this past weekend at Las Vegas festival grounds as proof that emo culture still lives on.

As soon as When We Were Young's initial lineup was unveiled in January, many fans immediately nicknamed it "Emo Fyre Fest." These worries were justified; given the number of bands scheduled to play (an unprecedented record for any US festival), even without cancellations on day one it would still be tight - an unfortunate reality that was apparent during planning for When We Were Young itself.

However, when the first day of WWWY had to be cancelled due to unfavorable weather conditions it was devastating for fans who had come from all around to attend this dream lineup. But the show continued and after selling out its initial date a second date was added in its place.

Thanks to official events outside the main festival grounds, lineups were more manageable and everyone enjoyed themselves more fully. Still, first-year issues existed: lines for merchandise purchases snaked throughout the entire venue; those intent on picking up T-shirts or hoodies missed many sets during that process.

The When We Were Young Festival is back in Las Vegas for a weekend full of fun! 

Here's what to expect before making your way down to the venue.

GENERAL INFO

Dates: Saturday, October 21 & Sunday, October 22

Time: 11 a.m. to 12 a.m.

Location: Las Vegas Festival Grounds

Box office hours: October 21st: 10 AM-12 AM (midnight), October 22nd: 10 AM-12 AM (midnight) and located at the corner of Las Vegas Blvd and Circus Circus Drive

Re-entry: Will be permitted until the box office closes for the night

Age restrictions: The festival is open to everyone of all ages but all attendees must have a ticket. VIP Cabanas are only for those 21 and older.

EARLY MERCH

A stand for fans to purchase merchandise early will be available during the following times:

• Friday, October 20 at 11 a.m.
• Saturday, October 21 at 8 a.m.
• Sunday, October 22 at 8 a.m.

It will be located outside the festival gates on the corner of Circus Circus Drive and Las Vegas Blvd.

Merch will also be available inside.

PROHIBITED ITEMS

The festival does not allow backpacks, purses or bags inside the venue unless they meet the following criteria:

• Small clutch purses and fanny packs that are 6" x 9" or smaller do not need to be clear, but can have no more than one pocket.
• All other bags larger than 6" x 9" must be smaller than 12" x 6" x 12" and clear.
• Hydration packs are allowed and do not need to be clear, but must be emptied of all liquid and have no more than two pockets in addition to the one holding the water reservoir.

For the avoidance of doubt, larger iridescent, color-tinted, and opalescent bags are NOT allowed; they must be clear.

When We Were Young 2023 in Las Vegas: Set times, lineup, tickets, how to get there

When We Were Young 2023 returns to Las Vegas this weekend for two days of pop-punk with headlining sets by Green Day and Blink-182 .

It’s the same lineup both days with artists performing on four stages — Green, Pink, Ghost and Stripe.

Green Day will, of course, be headlining the Green Stage.

At last year's When We Were Young festival, My Chemical Romance and a reunited Paramore topped a bill that also featured two of Arizona's biggest bands you might expect to find in such company, Jimmy Eat World and the Maine .

The 2023 festival also features two great Arizona artists — folk-punk legends AJJ (formerly known as Andrew Jackson Jihad) and Michelle Branch, the Sedona native who named her double-platinum breakthrough, 2001's "The Spirit Room," after a corner saloon in a haunted historic hotel in Jerome.

Getting to When We Were Young

Flying to Vegas?

The Las Vegas Festival Grounds are a few miles from Harry Reid International Airport.

Walking to When We Were Young?

If you are staying on The Strip, it’s an easy walk to the festival, with views of the city along the way.

• It's a 12-minute walk from Encore at Wynn Las Vegas.
• A 25-minute walk from the Venetian and the Mirage.
• A 30-minute walk from Caesars Palace.

Public Transportation to When We Were Young

Ride the  Las Vegas Monorail  to the Sahara Las Vegas Station. Upon arrival, take the Monorail pedestrian bridge across Paradise Avenue and walk through Sahara before crossing Las Vegas Boulevard to enter the festival grounds.

If you’re coming from the other side of the Las Vegas Strip, check out the  Deuce , a 24-hour bus service that picks up every 15 minutes. Buy a ticket ahead of time on the rideRTC mobile app. You can also pre-purchase your pass at one of the RTC's ticket vending machines located at  many of their stops . Taxis and limousines

You can get dropped off by a taxi or limousine in the festival’s transportation lot at 810 Circus Circus Drive at the south end of the Festival Grounds, just across the street from Circus Circus Hotel & Resort. At the end of the night, there will be a taxi queue there.

At the end of the night, Las Vegas Boulevard will be closed to through traffic and patrons will be directed south on the Strip. When heading south, you will be able to use existing rideshare operations.

When We Were Young Festival 2023 bag policy Vegas

Guests and their belongings are subject to search upon entry. You can help keep the lines moving by leaving large bags at home.

Backpacks, purses and bags must meet the following requirements:

• Small clutch purses and fanny packs that are 6 inches by 9 inches or smaller do not need to be clear and can have no more than one pocket.
• Bags larger than 6 by 9 inches must be clear and smaller than 12 by 12 by 6 inches.
• Hydration packs are allowed and do not need to be clear, but must be empty and have no more than two pockets in addition to the one holding the water reservoir.

Larger iridescent, color-tinted and opalescent bags are not allowed; they must be clear.

Security screening at When We Were Young

All patrons are subject to a search prior to entry. By purchasing a ticket, you agree to submit to a full body pat-down and magnetometer screening.

If you would like to be screened by personnel of your same gender, please let security know prior to the search process.

Screening of children will always take place with the consent of a parent or guardian.

Persons who do not comply with the search policy will be refused entry.

When We Were Young Festival Adds Second 2023 Date

UPDATE (Feb. 22, 2023): The When We Were Young Festival has just added a second date (Oct. 22) featuring the exact same lineup as the original Oct. 21 event. Hopeful attendees can now register for a pre-sale which will begin on Feb. 24 at 2PM PT. Get more information at the festival website .

With this year's installment of the When We Were Young Festival set to take place in just a couple of weeks, the event's organizers are already looking toward next year, having just announced an impressive 2023 lineup that includes over 50 bands with Blink-182 (now featuring Tom DeLonge ) tabbed as the headliner.

Earlier today (Oct. 11), Blink-182 officially announced the return of DeLonge, who left the group in 2015 and had not been featured on a Blink album since 2011's  Neighborhoods . There's a new record on the way with an appearance at the When We Were Young Festival being one of dozens on the books amid a 2023 and 2024 world tour.

It's not the only reunion destined for the WWWY stage next year, with Say Anything, Something Corporate and Finch all returning to action at this emo oasis taking place at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds on Oct. 21. Other high profile artists include Green Day, Good Charlotte, Rise Against, Sum 41, Simple Plan, New Found Glory and many more.
