New Zealand - Private Travel

New Zealand delivers infinite natural beauty, outdoor adventure, urban charm and exceptional cuisine.

Cinema tourism is big in New Zealand, thanks to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies – find more than 150 locations.

The two islands of New Zealand offer a world of pleasurable pursuits, whether you’re looking for robust adventure or peaceful down-time. Maybe a bit of both? Auckland at the top of the North Island enjoys sunny weather, iconic Polynesian culture, terrific food and wine, and excellent shopping. Beautiful beaches and plentiful hiking trails are just a short drive away, as are ferries to a number of outlying islands. The wineries of Hawke’s Bay entice visitors with tantalizing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, while the beaches and luxury resorts get them to stay for a while. Other pastimes here include birdwatching at Cape Kidnappers and hiking the trails around Lake Waikaremoana. New Zealand’s capital city of Wellington is at the southern tip of the North Island, replete with a splendid waterfront, sandy beaches, bakeries and boutiques, and a renowned coffee culture. On the South Island, the hospitality of Christchurch never fails to impress, as do the inlets and beaches of nearby Banks Peninsula. Visitors can embark on wildlife cruises, explore the vineyards of Waipara Valley or drink in the pastoral perfection of Canterbury Plains. New Zealand cuisine delivers a flavourful mix of European, Asian and Polynesian influences. The lamb of course is legendary, with pork and venison not that far behind. Seafood splendour includes salmon and lobster, oysters and scallops. The national dish? Pavlova, a meringue dessert topped with berries, passionfruit and – kiwis.

The 10 Best Tour Companies in New Zealand 🏅 [2024]

Touring New Zealand is easy. No matter who you are, what you are into or where you want to go in New Zealand; there’s a tour company in New Zealand ready to show you the way. From companies that specialise in small-group tours for the young backpacker to luxury tours for the mature traveller, you have plenty of New Zealand tour companies to choose from. We go through some of our top picks in this guide to the best tour companies in New Zealand!

While you’re here, you might be interested in browsing some specific tours in The Best 7-Day Tours of New Zealand , The Best 10-12-Day Tours of New Zealand and The Best 20+ Days Tours of New Zealand . Plus, don’t forget to bookmark Travel by Bus in New Zealand: The Ultimate Guide for even more tips.

6 Tips for Planning a Tour of New Zealand

  • Allow a day or two on either end of your tour  for your travel time to New Zealand, as well as time to get over the jet lag and explore your arrival city
  • Pack light : many of the tours are in twin or multi-share rooms where you will not only want to take up a lot of room but be able to keep a track of all your luggage! See our New Zealand Packing List  for more packing advice.
  • Use websites like Tourradar to easily compare tour companies. Another advantage of using these websites is that they have standard cancellation policies should your travel plans change
  • There will always be optional activities to take part in at an extra cost. Decide on a few of these before your trip departs so you are able to budget correctly
  • On a similar note, allow room in your budget for meals , as most New Zealand tours don’t have all meals included – see How Much Does a Trip to New Zealand Cost? for typical food prices in New Zealand
  • Virtually meet your fellow tour-goers before your trip by joining your tour company’s Facebook Group (if they have one).

Luxury New Zealand Tours and Vacations

Travel to New Zealand, not just for its breathtaking natural beauty, but also for its unique towns and cities. Take in Christchurch’s Victorian-Gothic architecture as well as gorgeous alpine scenery from a gondola. In cosmopolitan Auckland learn about indigenous  Maori  culture, and make day trips to golden beaches and boutique vineyards. Wherever you look in the capital city Wellington, there is art, theater, and a vibrant food and nightlife scene catering to all ages. Queenstown is considered the adventure capital of the world with everything, from zip lining to zorbing to skydiving on offer.

You will find that New Zealanders, known as Kiwis, are among the most laid-back and friendly people anywhere. In New Zealand  manaakitanga  refers to the native Maori way of welcoming guests, a unique style of extending kindness and hospitality. It’s exactly the kind of dedicated service we aspire to provide at Enchanting Travels. At every stage of your interaction with our team of consultants you will feel the warmth and hospitality that is at the core of Maori culture.

The advantage of a small country is that you can reach a remote wilderness location in a short drive from almost any city. From Dunedin on the South Island, an easy half-hour drive gets you to the Otago Peninsula awash with clusters of yellow-eyed and blue penguins, albatrosses, sea lions, and fur seals. The Canterbury Plains and Southern Alps are but a short distance out of Christchurch, while a quick ferry ride from Auckland brings you to the seaside lifestyle and wineries of Waiheke Island.

Few countries match New Zealand in outdoor pursuits and pristine natural beauty. Choose from stunning glaciers like Fox and Franz Josef, volcanoes of North Island’s Tongariro National Park, or the mud pools, geysers, and hot springs in Wai-O-Tapu. Chase waterfalls among towering peaks and blue waters at Milford Sound, watch giant sperm whales in Kaikoura, or explore limestone caves with dark depths illuminated by glow worms at Waitomo Caves. We know it seems like your options are unlimited. That’s why we’re at hand, to help curate an itinerary that best suits your needs.

What Our Guests Say

New Zealand

Best Time To Visit

Seasons in New Zealand are the exact opposite of what they are in the northern hemisphere. While the climate in the country is generally quite pleasant, it varies significantly depending on which region of the country you’re in. Here are some tips from our experts.

Things To Do

Although New Zealand is a relatively small country, it’s an incredibly diverse one, filled with great grasslands, towering mountains, warm pacific waters, and a vibrant metropolitan culture. Thanks to this diversity, there is no shortage of things to do in New Zealand.

While New Zealand is generally thought of as a pretty safe country to visit, it’s still a good idea to take the same level of care and caution as you would at home. Read the top tips from our experts before starting on your New Zealand travel plans.

Although Rod, the driver was very nice I felt that Intrepid had not organised the tour as well as previous Intrepid tours I have done. It was very overpriced for what was provided. The van had a broken seat belt attachment with a sharp edge which ruined a down jacket I had bought for the trip. I have asked Intrepid about it but received no reply.

Best of New Zealand: Mountain Biking & Black-Sand Beaches Tour

Best of New Zealand: Mountain Biking & Black-Sand Beaches

This is the best tour I have done so far in my travelling. It is very well organized and everything works seamlessly. The accommodation is one of the best parts because you get the opportunity to stay at some really cool places that are very different and definitely not places you would get to go if you were a solo traveller. The only thing I would recommend is to budget a little extra for this tour. The included activities are great, but there are a lot of optional activities that are amazing and you will end up really wanting to do them. Plus, since you are moving around so much, buying groceries is difficult so you end up eating out quite a bit which gets expensive if you are doing it for three weeks. Overall, the tour was amazing and you will meet so many great people :)

NEW ZEALAND – 10 Days Highlights of North and South Islands Tour

NEW ZEALAND – 10 Days Highlights of North and South Islands

Everything was very well organized and according to the description on the site, all transfers, attractions and accomodation. Hotels were well chosen (with one exception), clean and comfortable, guided tours had very knowledgeable and professional guides, busses of good quality. i was well informed about each step through the app. My questions were answered almost immediately through whatsapp. The only improvement point i can see is the chosen accomodation in Franz Josef (Montrose hostel): the room was not clean (bedsheet not changed, with hair on pillows and quilt) and the receptionist attitude very unpolite; i found myself another last minute accomodation and paid extra for it. All in all, thank you for a great experience in a beautiful country.

Classic South Island Adventure Tour

  • Mountain Hikes

Classic South Island Adventure

The Active Adventures Tui trip taken January 2020 fulfilled all our hopes for an amazing vacation! 8 days to traverse the itinerary meant a few long driving days, but all drives included beautiful scenery, as well as stops for bathrooms, photos, and short hikes. Both guides were "local" extremely knowledgeable, congenially women. Our group of 9 included 8 Americans and 1 Kiwi. Activities were well planned and modified for each person in the group. The only improvement that could be made was the bus; too many rows of seats for the space meant very little leg room. I would take this trip again, and certainly will try another route with the same company.

Ultimate North Island Adventure Tour

Ultimate North Island Adventure

This was a great tour! The guides (Lauren and Jonathan) were very accommodating with the different fitness levels of the guests and weather conditions. I loved that the guides cooked some of the meals which allowed us the freedom to relax and share wine and experiences. The hikes were excellent and liked the other activities. Sandboarding, cave tubing and mountain biking were a must do. This tour hit all the great places on the North Island. Highly recommend!

Southern Highlights - 9 Day Self Drive Tour

After a "misstep" by your team in the beginning, canceling my trip the very next day after confirmation, Jules appeared to go significantly above the routine and made sure EVERYTHING else went PERFECT. She spent alot of phone time with me. Every place we went had the reservation, ticket, tour, seats ready and instantly available. She booked a few extras I did not request that were very enjoyable. I was able to easily book some things advertised we thought would be too crowded over the Christmas break making the whole trip the best one ever. THANK YOU JULES- and Marianna as well.

Queenstown to Wellington Highlights - 7 Day Self Drive Tour

The overall experience of working with tour radar was amazing. The help with planning to fit our needs, the support around the clock, the seamless process of everything was fantastic. But we have to say that the hotel accommodations were subpar. Queenstown was okay, but Christchurch was a huge disappointment. We were so glad we only stayed there one night because it was old, the beds weren’t comfortable and it just wasn’t a good experience. Perhaps there should be a package with the opportunity to upgrade accommodations.

Reviews of Small Group tours to New Zealand

One of the best experiences of my life, made possible by the incredibly talented and charismatic Daisy! This was well organized with all of the logistics taken care of for you while having the freedom to pick what activities interest you most. The group setting was fun and a nice bonding expensive of people from around the world. Some of the hostel stays were great, some were just ok, but all were clean and had the essentials.
Summer did an excellent job guiding us around and telling us all about her home country.

Boeing execs were using the company's private jets for personal trips more than we thought

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Boeing execs used an additional $545,520 for personal travel expenses in 2021 and 2022.

The Wall Street Journal first reported Boeing had improperly classified personal trips on private jets as business travel.

The IRS said in February it was beginning to audit corporate jet usage.

Boeing's execs have been using the company's private jets for personal travel — and it's more than we thought.

Top Boeing executives used an additional $545,520 for personal jet travel in 2021 and 2022 than was initially reported, according to an amended SEC filing .

The Wall Street Journal reports Boeing made the revisions after an investigation last year into the use of private jets by its top executives.

The Journal found that, in some cases, personal trips had been improperly classified as business travel.

"Following a review commenced by the company in 2023, we found certain items, primarily aircraft, and ground transportation costs … were not previously classified as perquisites by the Company but should have been classified as such in accordance with SEC rules and guidance," the company said in its proxy statement .

The revised stats for Boeing's outgoing CEO, Dave Calhoun, amounted to an additional $142,315 in personal travel in 2021 and 2022.

That said, Boeing wrote in the filing that its CEO "is required to use company aircraft for all business and personal travel for security reasons."

The other execs whose travel was revised in the filing include CFO Brian West, former president and CEO of commercial airplanes Stanley Deal, and president and CEO of Boeing defense, space, and security Theodore Colbert.

Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Calhoun recently said he would step down at the end of 2024 after he faced significant scrutiny following the Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 door blowout in January.

The Journal notes there are tax implications when company jets are taken for personal travel and that the IRS said it will begin auditing corporate jet usage this year.

The Journal's 2023 investigation found that Boeing's fleet of private jets had made around 400 trips to or from airports near Calhoun's two homes in New Hampshire and South Carolina since roughly 2020 after Boeing moved its headquarters from Chicago to Arlington, VA., in 2022, and attempted to get staff to return to the office.

Maps of the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

By Jonathan Corum

On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.

By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.

Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.

Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?

The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

Viewers inside the path of the total eclipse may notice a drop in temperature , a lull or shift in the wind , the appearance of bright planets in the sky, and the quieting of birds and other wildlife.

Many cities lie inside the path of the total eclipse, as shown below, the width of which varies from 108 miles to 122 miles.

If the sky is clear, viewers in the path of the total eclipse should see a “diamond ring” effect a few seconds before and after the total eclipse, as the edge of the sun slips in and out of view.

The sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sun’s glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sun’s swirling magnetic field.

The sun is relatively active this year and is nearing the expected peak of its 11-year solar cycle . Researchers at Predictive Science are using data about the sun’s magnetic field to predict and model a dramatic corona for the April eclipse.

What Colors Should I Wear?

As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.

To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, Solar Eyeglasses suggests wearing green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.

What If I Miss It?

The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.

Luckily, we’ve compared dozens of VPNs to ensure they tick all these boxes for a fair price, while also delivering fast speeds and good customer service. So keep reading to find out our pick of the best travel VPNs.

The best travel VPN overall: ExpressVPN

1. expressvpn.

The best travel VPN, and great for beginners

Number of servers: 3,000+ | Speed: Up to 750 Mbps | VPN locations: 160 in 105 countries | Maximum devices supported: 8 | 24/7 live chat: Yes | 30 day money back guarantee: Yes

✔️ You want to access sites and services from around the world while you’re traveling . ExpressVPN boasts 160 server locations across 94 countries, so you’ll have plenty of secure options that can unblock the content you want.

✔️ This is your first VPN and you want something that’s easy to use. ExpressVPN’s intuitive interface is ideal for beginners, and its 24/7 customer support is very reassuring and helpful.

✔️ You want a secure VPN with plenty of features. ExpressVPN comes with a sophisticated kill switch, DNS leak protection, and an auto-connect feature.

❌ You're on a budget. ExpressVPN is definitely one of the more expensive options out there. So you might want to look at Surfshark or PIA if you’re on a budget.

❌ You want the fastest speeds around. Although ExpressVPN shouldn’t slow you down for most everyday activities, if you game or stream a lot, you might be better off with NordVPN or Surfshark.

ExpressVPN  is the best travel VPN around, thanks to its large fleet of secure servers, excellent security features, and ability to unblock region-restricted content from anywhere.

If you want the best VPN for travel, you’d struggle to find better than ExpressVPN. With an impressive fleet of over 3,000 servers across 160 locations in 94 countries, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from.

It even has servers in locations that have restrictive rules around VPNs, such as China, Iran, and Indonesia. This means that you can still protect your data while traveling to these countries without impacting your speed.

Speaking of protecting your data, ExpressVPN is one of the most privacy-focused VPNs on the market.

ExpressVPN can unblock location-restricted content from other parts of the world. It has the best coverage we’ve found in the US and Europe. And it has servers across 26 Asia-Pacific regions, giving you no end of options when it comes to accessing the content you want.

Unfortunately, ExpressVPN is one of the more expensive options out there, and it only comes with eight simultaneous connections, which is frustrating, considering the price, but this will probably be sufficient for a lot of users. It comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it before committing to a lengthy subscription.

The best cheap travel VPN: Surfshark

2. surfshark.

The best cheap travel VPN available

Number of servers: 3,200+ | Server locations: 160+ in 100+ countries | Maximum devices supported: Unlimited | 24/7 live chat: Yes | 30 day money back guarantee: Yes

✔️ You want the fastest speeds a VPN can offer. Surfshark is the fastest VPN we’ve tested, getting up to 950 Mbps. So you’ll be able to enjoy a smooth, lag-free experience.

✔️ You want a VPN solution for your whole travel party in one subscription. Surfshark offers unlimited simultaneous connections, meaning that everyone going with you will be covered on all their devices with the same subscription.

✔️ You’re after a cheap VPN that doesn’t skimp on features. Despite Surfshark’s low monthly cost, it comes stuffed full of security features, as well as unlimited simultaneous connections and unrivaled speeds.

❌ You feel the need for a particularly robust kill switch. Although it works reasonably well, we found it struggled under intense testing. If you need one that’s completely foolproof, NordVPN and ExpressVPN would suit you better.

❌ You have an older Windows device. Surfshark doesn’t support Windows versions below 8.1, and Windows users don’t get a free 7-day trial option.

Surfshark offers incredible value for money, with very reasonable low monthly subscriptions that come with unlimited simultaneous connections and access to 3,200+ servers across the globe.

If you want a solid VPN for travel without breaking the bank, Surfshark is an excellent choice, particularly if you’re going with a large group of people. That’s because Surfshark offers unlimited simultaneous connections, so you can all use the same subscription on all your devices at once.

It has a fleet of 3,200 servers in 143 locations across 100 countries. Although this isn’t the largest offering around, it’ll give you plenty of options while you’re traveling abroad.

It’s a particularly strong choice if you’re visiting a country where VPNs are restricted, such as China. This is thanks to Surfshark’s NoBorders mode, which switches on automatically whenever it detects restrictions on your network. It will then present you with a list of servers that are strong enough to bypass the restrictions.

Surfshark is also brilliant at accessing geo-blocked sites and services. Plus, if streaming is important to you, you’ll really appreciate Surfshark’s unbeatable speeds. You can try it out risk-free thanks to Surfshark’s 30-day money-back guarantee.

The best travel VPN for groups: Private Internet Access

3. private internet access.

A great travel VPN for group holidays

Number of servers: 20,000+ | Server locations: 84 countries | Maximum devices supported: Unlimited | 24/7 live chat: Yes | 30 day money back guarantee: Yes

✔️ You want a huge selection of servers to choose from. PIA boasts an incredible fleet of 20,000+ servers. So wherever you are in the world, you’ll be sure to find plenty of options nearby that you can connect to.

✔️ You’re looking for one VPN subscription for everyone you’re traveling with. PIA gives you unlimited simultaneous connections, which means that everyone going on holiday with you will be able to use the same subscription.

✔️ Your privacy is important to you.  PIA operates a strict zero logs policy, which has been proven in court twice now, So you can trust that PIA really is as secure as it claims to be.

❌ This is your first VPN and you want something user-friendly. PIA has lots of customizable options, which is great if you know what you’re doing. But it’s not the easiest one to use if you’re not used to VPNs.

❌ You want to watch 10Play. While PIA is great at unblocking most region-restricted content, we weren’t able to use it to access 10Play.

Private Internet Access offers fantastic value for money, with low monthly costs and unlimited simultaneous connections.

If you’re after a VPN while you’re abroad, you won’t go far wrong with PIA. With over 20,000 servers across 84 countries, you’ll never be far away from a server. It even has a server in every single US state, making it a fantastic choice if you’re traveling around the US.

Even though it doesn’t have servers in quite as many countries as some of the other providers on our list, it has them in many locations where VPNs are restricted, such as China and Turkey. However, if you’re traveling to Iran, Cuba, Syria, or Myanmar, PIA won’t be able to bypass the restrictions. So make sure you check it works in your destination before you sign up,

PIA comes with unlimited simultaneous connections. So you and your travel companions can all use it on as many devices as you like while only paying for one subscription. Considering how cheap PIA is, this gives you excellent value for money.

Sadly, it’s not as fast as NordVPN or Surfshark. But its speeds are adequate for most online activities, including streaming. Speaking of which, PIA was able to bypass region restrictions on every streaming service we tested, apart from 10Play.

If you want to try it out, PIA offers a free 30-day money-back guarantee.

Other quality travel VPNs I've tested

The very best VPN I've tested

Number of servers: 6,000+ | Server locations: 140 in 110+ countries | Maximum devices supported: 6 | 24/7 live chat: Yes | 30 day money back guarantee: Yes

✔️ You want robust security. NordVPN is one of the most privacy-focused VPNs on the market, with features like Double VPN, Onion over VPN, and built-in antivirus protection.

✔️ You want to unblock region-restricted content while you’re traveling. Whatever you want to watch, NordVPN will help you access the content you want in seconds.

✔️ You need fast internet speeds. Thanks to NordVPN’s own NordLynx protocol, you’ll be able to enjoy fast and reliable speeds that are ideal for streaming and gaming.

❌ You want to access servers from the largest range of countries. Although NordVPN has servers in 60 countries around the world, Surfshark and ExpressVPN offer significantly more options.

❌ You need unlimited simultaneous connections . A NordVPN subscription only comes with six simultaneous connections. So you’ll need to pay for more than one subscription if you’re traveling in a large group or sign up to Surfshark or PIA instead.

NordVPN is one of the most reputable VPNs on the market, and with its outstanding security features, strong unblocking capabilities, and consistently fast speeds, it more than lives up to its reputation as being one of the best all-round solutions.

NordVPN might be the perfect travel VPN for you but it depends on where you’re going. Due to the fact it has servers in a comparatively small number of countries, it may not suit your plans. So make sure you check your destination is covered before choosing NordVPN.

However, if you’re happy with the list of server locations, NordVPN is a fantastic choice. Its obfuscated servers make it a perfect VPN for China, Iran, and other locations where VPNs are restricted. It works by disguising VPN traffic to make it look like regular traffic, so it can go undetected. This also makes it ideal for unblocking region-restricted content.

Elsewhere, it delivers consistently fast speeds thanks to NordVPN’s unique Wireguard-based protocol, NordLynx. If you’re traveling solo or with one or two others, it’s a strong and reliable solution that won’t let you down. You can try it out before committing, thanks to its 30-day money-back guarantee.

5. CyberGhost

A good travel VPN with a long money-back-guarantee

Number of servers: 9,700+ | Server locations: 91 countries | Maximum devices supported: 7 | 24/7 live chat: Yes | 45 day money back guarantee: Yes

✔️ You want time to make up your mind. While most providers offer 30 days, CyberGhost gives a generous 45-day money-back guarantee. This gives you plenty of time to try it out before deciding if it’s the right provider for you.

✔️ You’ve never used a VPN before. CyberGhost is easy to use with plenty of tutorials and handy guides to help you get to grips with all CyberGhost has to offer.

✔️ You’re on a tight budget. Price-wise, CyberGhost is comparable with other great-value solutions, such as Surfshark and PIA. It also offers plenty of features, giving you great value for money.

❌ You want a wide selection of streaming options. In testing, CyberGhost struggled to bypass region restrictions on some of the most popular streaming services, such as the UK versions of Netflix and Disney Plus.

❌ You want one subscription for your whole travel party. Unless you’re traveling alone or with one or two other people, you might find that CyberGhost’s seven simultaneous connections aren’t sufficient for you. Instead, you might be better off with Sufshark or PIA

CyberGhost is a brilliant travel VPN for beginners as it’s easy to use and is a very affordable solution.

If you’re looking for your first travel VPN, CyberGhost is a solid choice, thanks to its simple, intuitive interface, cheap price plans, and generous 45-day money-back guarantee. On top of this, it offers a huge selection of 11,700+ servers in 91 countries, so you’ll almost certainly be able to access secure servers at your destination.

Despite its low monthly cost, CyberGhost has some of the fastest speeds around, beating the likes of ExpressVPN and PIA. Better yet, CyberGhost can unblock local banking apps with ease, which means you can do secure online banking without worrying about hackers.

However, it’s not quite as adept at unblocking location-restricted streaming services. In our testing, we found that it struggled to unblock the UK versions of Disney Plus and Netflix.

It also doesn’t have the most reliable customer service, unlike NordVPN and ExpressVPN. It’s pretty good for the price, however, and if you want to try it out, you get a full 45-day money-back guarantee, giving you plenty of time to decide.

How to choose the right travel VPN

When choosing the best travel VPN, you’ll need one that will successfully spoof your true IP address and make it appear as though you’re in a different location. This will prevent third parties, including foreign governments, from being able to see your online activity or restrict your internet usage. Therefore, you’ll want a VPN with plenty of robust security features to prevent anyone from being able to view any of your data.

It’s also important to check whether or not it has a good range of secure servers at your destination. If you’re headed somewhere that restricts VPNs, such as China, Iran, or Russia, you’ll also need one that has obfuscated servers so you can access the content you want without detection.

On top of this, a good travel VPN will be able to unblock region-restricted sites and services from around the world. If you’re traveling as part of a large group, it’s a sensible idea to pick a provider that offers enough simultaneous connections for everyone.

How we test travel VPNs

Before recommending the best VPNs for travel, we put all the market-leading providers through a rigorous testing process before selecting the best options.

Our expert team of in-house testers try out a huge range of options and decide on the best ones. We trial desktop and mobile apps on all major operating systems and check all of the settings in each app to ensure it works well.

We also run further tests every six months to keep our findings completely up to date and to ensure we’ve tested out any new features. And we test each VPN to see if it can consistently unblock all the major streaming services.

For more details, see our full methodology on how we test VPNs .

‘Full’ GP clinics enrol more patients after clinics bought by healthcare company

Corporate ownership of GP practices in New Zealand is growing rapidly . Many GPs welcome the change because it gives them financial certainty and lets them get on with their jobs. But some clinics say an ownership change led to new pressures.

GP practices that were bought by a corporate owner reopened their books to new patients despite struggling to care for their existing patients.

That led to a rush of new enrolments, creating more pressure on the staff and a rise in wait-times for patients.

Papakura East Medical Centre stopped taking new patients last year because it was at capacity, with about 6000 patients for four GPs, some of whom worked part-time.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that after Green Cross Health purchased the practice five months ago the books were reopened despite no changes being made to staffing levels.

The Papakura practice was one of only a few clinics taking new patients in South Auckland, and enrolments increased rapidly.

This added stress for the GPs and increased wait times for a routine appointment, the source claimed. Staff faced increased frustration and occasional abuse from patients who could not be seen by a doctor.

It was not an isolated case. The Royal NZ College of General Practitioners said some members had also reported being directed to take on more patients after a buyout by various healthcare companies.

GPs’ advocates say the recommended “safe” ratio is a maximum of 1200 to 1300 patients per doctor . This ensured doctors had time to check results, make referrals and other key tasks. The recommended number was lower for doctors with high-needs patients.

However, this recommendation was being revised to take into account the growing complexity of patient needs in New Zealand.

Papakura East Medical Centre is a Very Low Cost Access practice, which means its patients have high needs.

Green Cross Health general manager Wayne Woolrich said in a statement that the company sought to ensure staffing levels could support and sustain appropriate levels of patient numbers.

Each practice was reviewed differently depending on patient needs, demographics, location and other support services, he said.

Papakura East Medical Centre’s enrolments had risen by 300 since it was purchased, and Green Cross said this was “in line with clinical capacity”.

The company challenged the claims made about wait times, saying the average wait for a routine appointment was between three days and a week, which was comparable to other GP clinics.

Woolrich said leadership teams at each practice reviewed their books regularly to make sure they maintained a balance between patient access and workload.

Asked whether the decision was motivated by funding shortages, Woolrich acknowledged all GPs were facing financial challenges.

“With funding not keeping up with the increasing costs of operating a medical practice, and growing challenges to recruit and retain GPs and nurses, medical practices and urgent care centres across New Zealand are faced [with] decisions on how they operate to remain viable.”

the private travel company new zealand

Royal NZ College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) president Dr Samantha Murton said she believed most privately-owned practices would be cautious about not enrolling too many patients.

“If you are increasing volume to the point that staff are overwhelmed then that is not appropriate,” she said.

She also said practice owners could be put in a difficult position in areas where doctors were scarce.

“There are places where there might be 1800 people living in your community and getting other staff is really difficult but there is nowhere else in town. So you may have more patients than you can provide the services for.”

More doctors selling up

Corporate ownership of GP practices has doubled in the last decade in New Zealand, and 14 per cent of GPs reported in 2022 that they worked in a partially or fully corporate-owned practice.

Green Cross Health and Tamaki Health are the largest providers. Green Cross now owns 66 practices. Its growth has been rapid, doubling the clinics under ownership since 2016. Tamaki Health has 50 partially or fully owned clinics.

The changing ownership of primary care practices was being driven by a number of factors, including underfunding and understaffing .

Murton said a large number of GPs were set to retire in the next decade and the younger generation of family doctors may be more hesitant to take a stake in their practice.

“The people who are coming in young have families at a slightly later age, have two people working in their family, they’re buying a house and have a student loan.

“So the ability to buy into practice may be different from what it was years ago. I think we are a little bit more risk-averse and the corporates seem to have the capacity and the power to buy stuff up that we doctors may not.”

She said being bought out appealed to some GPs because a company could take over the financial risk of the business and the non-medical parts of the job, freeing them up to focus on their patients.

But GP advocacy groups have also raised concerns about profit-driven healthcare and the potential demise of the family doctor.

RNZCGP and GPNZ, which represent GPs, want a national discussion about the possible impacts of changing ownership on primary care.
