How To Properly Clean a Thermos Lid (Instructions)

I use my thermos for both drinks and food. Sometimes I fill it with coffee, sometimes soup and sometimes water or smoothies. But this means it can get dirty really quickly, especially in the ridges and seals on the lid.

If you don't clean it properly (and most people don't) it can collect mold so knowing how to properly clean your thermos lid is really important.

To properly clean a thermos lid, you will need to take apart all the pieces that make up the lid. Soak the pieces of the lid in warm soapy water for 10 minutes. Rinse and wash the lid with a solution of baking soda and white distilled vinegar to get rid of stubborn stains.

Mold and bacteria love dark, damp places, and unfortunately, the ridges and grooves of your thermos lid are the ideal breeding ground for them.

Knowing how to clean a thermos lid is so important because black mold is very dangerous if ingested, and a dirty lid can make your contents smell bad.

What You Will Need To Get Started

Cleaning a thermos lid can be done quite easily using the things you already have lying around at home.

Cleaners you will need:

  • Dish soap. Any brand will work
  • Baking soda
  • Lemon juice (optional)
  • White distilled vinegar
  • Home bleach

As you can see, there’s no need to go out and spend money on fancy cleaners when you can use these common household items.

Tools you will need to clean with:

  • Dish sponge
  • Bottle or spout brush (optional)
  • Q-tips (optional)
  • Cotton swabs (optional)
  • Toothbrush (optional)
  • Pipe cleaner (optional)

These cleaning tools can be used for those hard-to-reach places in the thermos lid.

How To Properly Clean a Thermos Lid

Here’s how to properly clean your thermos lid.

Step 1: Disassemble The Lid

To properly clean, you will need to take apart all parts of your thermos lid.

There are a few common styles of lids found on your thermos. There's a regular twist top lid (which is the easiest to clean), a push button lid or a fastener ring.

How To Disassemble Regular Thermos Lid:

If you have one of the large Thermoses with a regular lid that twists on these are simple to disassemble and clean.

  • Unscrew the lid and take it off the bottle
  • Remove rubber gasket with your finger

How To Disassemble a Push Button Thermos Lid

Disassembling a push button thermos lid can be tricky and involves quite a few steps. Below is a video showing exactly how to do it:

How To Disassemble Twist Top Thermos Tumbler Lid

There are 2 different ways to disassemble your Thermos twist top tumbler lid. This requires a fair few steps so I've included the partial and full breakdown videos below:

Partial Breakdown:

Full Breakdown:

When you have taken apart your thermos lid be sure not to lose any of the lid components.

Step 2: Soak The Lid

The first part of cleaning the lid is to let it just soak in hot water with dish soap for 10 minutes. Any dishwashing soap will work for this.

Sometimes beverages like coffee with milk, if left in a thermos or wasn’t washed properly after use, can start to smell like sour milk, which can make drinking from your thermos rather unpleasant.

To help with the smell, you can soak the lid in a baking soda, white distilled vinegar, and lemon juice solution. Use one teaspoon of baking soda, ½ cup of vinegar, and one teaspoon of lemon juice. The juice is optional.

If you are going to be using vinegar in your cleaning solution, do not use brown vinegar as the smell is very strong, and your drinks will constantly smell of vinegar. Trust me, just avoid it!

Once the 10 minutes is up, you can clean the lid with a gentle dishwashing sponge and rinse the soap off.

Step 3: Scrub The Lid

If your thermos is particularly dirty or if you have black mold growing, you will need to scrub the lid thoroughly.

First, you will need to make another baking soda and vinegar cleaning solution. You will notice a chemical reaction occur when you mix the ingredient, this is totally normal.

Using your choice of cleaning accessories like a brush or q-tip, start scrubbing all the components of the thermos lid, paying extra attention to under the valve and in the ridges of the lid. Scrub until the lid is clean.

I personally like to use this bottle brush cleaning kit from Amazon as it's affordable and features a bottle brush for easily cleaning inside my thermos as well as smaller brushes which allow me to get into all the gaskets and little crevices to clean them well.

3-in-1 Stainless Steel Water Bottle Brush Set

Three tools in one. Includes a long bottle brush, straw brush and detail cleaner (great for cleaning inside lid gaskets). Comes with organizer ring and storage hook,

Sometimes mold can be stubborn, so you may need to bring out the household bleach and use one teaspoon of bleach with hot water. Let the lid soak for 5 minutes before scrubbing the mold off.

This is only recommended for very stubborn mold and not just general cleaning of the thermos lid.

Step 4: Rinse and Reassemble The Lid

When you are happy with the cleanliness of your thermos lid, you can rinse off the cleaning mixture. I suggest doing this twice. There is nothing worse than soapy coffee or vinegar in your coffee.

Dry all the parts of the lid well before reassembling the lid, and when you are doing this, you simply need to work backward from when you removed the lid.

Everything should slot easily back into place.

Now you can use your thermos without worrying about any nasty germs or smells!

What Are The Best Ways To Clean Thermos Gaskets?

thermos travel mug lid cleaning

The gasket on the Thermos lid is the biggest culprit when it comes to horrible odors in your thermos. Luckily cleaning the gasket is really simple.

First pull the rubber gasket off the lid with your fingers. It comes off pretty effortlessly.

If there is mold or gunk on there then give it a bit of a rinse and scrub before soaking the gasket in vinegar to kill any mold.

I like to soak my gasket in 1-2 cups of white vinegar and scrub the grooves and nooks with a small brush.

Be sure to rinse thoroughly to remove any leftover vinegar.

You can use a baking soda and water paste which you put on the gasket and can scrub the gasket gently. Rinse well when done.

Should I Clean My Thermos Lid Or Just Replace It?

You can pretty much always salvage a thermos lid and shouldn't throw it out. However, sometimes you may need to replace it.

Giving your thermos lid a deep clean can do wonders, it will look brand new and it is pretty easy to clean. Even for lazy people like me.

However, if the lid is still leaking this might mean a broken gasket which you’re better off just replacing then trying to fix it.

Where To Buy Replacement Thermos Lids

Brands like YETI, Hydro Flask and Camelbak will have replacement lids available to purchase from their websites.

Amazon also sells replacement lids for many of the popular thermos brands. Make sure you get one with a good rating and some of them have terrible rating and seem really poor quality.

This replacement lid at Amazon for a classic 1.1-quart or 2-quart thermos seems like a good option.

How to Safely Clean Your Gross Travel Mug Lid

Ditch the dishwasher and use these simple solutions instead.

It seems I collect to-go mugs; bonafide, for-the-car containers to keep hot beverages hot at school functions, as gifts, and at the store when mine start to smell bad or stop working properly.

Most travel-mug lids have a rubbery seal made of polypropylene, a food-safe plastic that has a high tolerance for heat—including the type of heat it receives in the top rack of a dishwasher. Many travel mug manufacturers’ product care guidelines recommend top-rack dishwashing as the safest and best way to clean their lids. Not all lids, however, are created equally. Some are made of other, less durable material.

If you’ve had (and dishwashed) a travel mug for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed that the seal begins to break down or warp. Your hot beverage doesn’t stay so hot, and the potential for leaks increases. You might also notice a funky smell. That’s because old coffee and bacteria can hide in all those grooves—more bacteria, in fact, than what’s in a dog bowl. Oh, and not to mention, your travel mug lid can actually grow mold.

So while these mugs are great for the environment, they’re not so hot for our health. Follow these steps to keep your gasket and lid in tip-top shape:

How to Clean Your Travel Mug

  • Always rinse out the lid (and mug) with warm water after every use. Open and close all the parts while running the lid under the tap. If you’re like me, however, and you end up forgetting your mug in the car (and it sits in there all day and/or night), then read on.
  • Take apart any pieces of the lid that you can. Soak them and the lid in warm dish-soapy water for 10 minutes. This will help soften and loosen whatever may be clinging to the lid. If the lid has an open/close mechanism, set it to “open.” Avoid cleansers or anything chlorine-based, but if your lid is particularly stinky, you can soak it in a warm water-baking soda solution for a couple hours instead.
  • Rinse under warm water, opening and closing the seal to ensure all the soap gets washed away. For very complicated lids, consider using a bottle or spout brush, clean toothbrush, cotton swab, or pipe cleaner to get at all those hidden places.
  • For the occasional deep clean, put 1 teaspoon baking soda in the mug and add ½ cup distilled white vinegar. (This is a great science experiment for the kiddos, too!) After the bubbles settle down, cap the mug, leaving the drinking spout open but covered with your thumb or finger, and shake it. Be warned, as this will really agitate those bubbles. Pour it out, then follow steps 1-3.
  • Allow the lid to dry completely, separately from the mug.

What causes mold to grow in the lid?

Mold thrives in dark, damp places—just like that hidden crease between your lid and the removable seal that rarely (if ever) sees the sunlight. And if you never take the seal off when you're washing your tumbler, moisture gets trapped inside, making it the perfect environment for mold spores to grow.

Eek! There's mold in my tumbler. Should I panic?

Tumbler

Mold-free tumblers, FTW.

Not necessarily. "Dirt/mold is gross (and obviously everyone should be keeping things clean) but unless you have a compromised immune system or literally never clean out your bottle, you're probably also not going to get sick from it," our Kitchen & Cooking Editor Cassidy Olsen says. "Stay on top of things, sure, but there's no need to panic."

Here's how to clean your travel tumbler

WashingDishes

So fresh, so clean.

Because no one wants their coffee with a side of mold, we asked Olsen to share her top tips for washing out a travel tumbler. "I think being lazy and leaving those bits on is what leads to mold growth," she warns. Below is her simple four-step process for keeping your cups clean.

1. Take the whole thing apart.

Break your tumbler down into as many pieces as possible before you start washing. That includes disassembling any rubber seals and exterior protection as well.

2. Use warm water and dish soap.

Always use hot, soapy water to clean. While some people may use cold water in an attempt to save money, warm water actually makes dish detergent more effective at cutting through oil, bacteria, and, yes, mold.

3. Get into hard-to-reach places.

A haphazard swipe around the inside of your cup isn't going to get the job done. You'll need to thoroughly clean out every nook and cranny of the different parts, which Olsen recommends using pipe cleaners or Q-tips to tackle.

4. Dry all of the pieces thoroughly before you reassemble it.

You could have the most sparkling clean tumbler imaginable... but if you don't dry the parts before putting it back together, you'll end up with a moldy mess in no time. Let the pieces dry completely overnight or thoroughly towel-dry them, making sure there's no excess water hiding in the creases of the seal.

Can I use the dishwasher if I don't feel like hand-washing my tumbler?

How to Clean a Travel Mug or Water Bottle

A collection of different types of water bottles laid flat on a surface.

By Christine Ryan

Christine Ryan is an editor overseeing coverage of travel and outdoors gear, which has entailed testing down-filled vests in Iceland in June.

If you’re anything like me, the extent of cleaning your travel mug or water bottle is a quick rinse-out, swishing the water around before dumping it out, and then just putting the mug or bottle back on the shelf.

Until, that is, you peer inside the bottle and see … ewww, is that mold? Or until you leave your mug, not quite emptied of milky tea, in your car all day. Suddenly, doing a deep clean of that water bottle or mug becomes urgent.

Here’s how to effectively clean all your bottles and mugs.

What you’ll need

A bunch of water bottle cleaning supplies, including a cleaning brush, dish soap and a box of baking soda.

  • Dishwasher basket: You’ll want one that has a lid and small holes, such as the OXO Tot , to contain small parts.
  • Dish soap: We like Seventh Generation Dish Soap , but any dish soap should work.
  • Bottle-cleaning brush set: Our favorite is the OXO Good Grips Water Bottle Cleaning Set . It comes with a large bottle brush, a skinny straw brush, and a looped detail-cleaning brush, all linked with a handy ring.
  • Distilled white vinegar: Mix this with baking soda; the resulting fizz will help loosen caked-on drink residue.
  • Baking soda: Mix this with the vinegar (see above).
  • Denture tablets (as an alternative): If you don’t have vinegar and baking soda but you do have denture tablets, they’d be a good substitute. (We’ve used Target’s house brand .)
  • Baking sheet: Any flattish, oven-safe pan will work.

How long will this take?

This shouldn’t take more than 45 minutes, plus the time it takes to air-dry. If your mug or bottle is dishwasher-safe, cleaning will take only as long as a cycle in your machine.

Find out if your bottle or mug is dishwasher-safe

A plastic dishwasher basket with two water bottle caps inside.

This info should be embossed on the bottom of the container, but if it’s not, check the manufacturer’s website. If your mug or bottle can go through the dishwasher, all the better.

We’d still recommend removing any lids or other small pieces and securing them in a closeable dishwasher basket. This should keep them from washing down into the bottom of the tub, where they might get wedged against (and melted by) your dishwasher’s heating element (if it has one).

Insulated containers often aren’t labeled as being dishwasher-safe. The heat and water pressure inside a dishwasher can damage the container’s vacuum seal—and potentially degrade its ability to retain heat or cold over time. Dishwashers can also scratch or wear away the container’s finish.

How to hand-wash your bottle or mug

A person using a brush to scrub the inside of a water bottle that is visibly dirty.

Most of the time, dish soap and water will do the trick. Drip a little dish soap into the bottle or mug, add some warm water, and scrub away.

You can use a sponge, if it fits all the way into the vessel. But we’ve found that most mugs and bottles are too narrow to allow your hand in far enough to reach the bottom. That’s why we recommend bottle brushes.

Depending on the design of your mug or bottle, you may need a few brushes of different sizes to clean in and around the lid mechanism, the spout, and deep into the vacuum bottle or mug body itself.

We like OXO’s cleaning set because it has three brushes of different shapes and sizes—plus, the whole set can go through the dishwasher (brushes need cleaning too!). We bought a couple of sets in the course of researching our water bottle guide , to confirm their quality, and they are as good as we thought they would be.

Some water bottles, such as those made by Purist , have linings that can be damaged by bottle brushes or abrasive sponges, though. For those bottles, we suggest rinsing them out with soap and warm water or (if they’re dishwasher-safe) putting them in the top rack for a cycle.

For stubborn residue, break out the bubbles

A glass pyrex measuring cup that is filled with a clear foamy solution of vinegar and baking soda.

If you’re drinking anything besides water in your water bottle or travel mug, gunk will build up over time. In our water bottles guide, we recommend using bottle brushes and a mixture of baking soda and vinegar . You don’t need much of either.

Drop just a half-teaspoon or so of baking soda into your mug or bottle, and add approximately half a cup of vinegar. It’ll foam vigorously for a few seconds but then die down. At that point, start scrubbing with your brush or sponge.

I’ve also had good results from using denture-cleaning tablets, whose main active ingredient is sodium bicarbonate—otherwise known as baking soda.

How to clean stinky silicone parts

A cleaning brush that has been placed inside of the dettached plastic lid of a water bottle.

If your bottle or mug comes with silicone gaskets or seals—like the ones on our favorite travel mug , the Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug —you may notice that over time they take on the smells of whatever you drink.

To remove the stink from your gaskets, many experts recommend burying them in fresh baking soda for two days. Marguerite Preston, our senior kitchen editor, has a better (and quicker) solution : Bake the silicone pieces in the oven. Here’s her method, adapted from a thread she saw on Reddit:

Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Most silicone cookware is oven-safe up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit or more. But because travel-mug gaskets don’t usually come with heat limits, Marguerite said she errs on the side of caution. Make sure that whatever you’re heating is 100% silicone. Do not put plastic or rubber in your oven.

A person holding a water bottle that has not been cleaned and has some visible stains on the inside.

While the oven is heating, carefully wash your silicone gaskets with dish soap and hot water. Then place the gaskets in the oven on a baking sheet. Set a timer for 20 minutes.

Pull the gaskets out of the oven every 10 minutes or so and carefully take a whiff. After about 40 minutes, most of the stink should be gone.

If you do notice a light lingering coffee scent, it might be due to residual coffee oils still clinging to the silicone. Marguerite said she gives the gaskets an extra quick scrub to remove that residue, and the scent disappears almost entirely.

Travel mugs are reusable mugs that allow you to make your favorite hot beverages at home and easily take them with you on-the-go. While travel mugs can both save you money and help reduce coffee cup waste, the materials they’re made of can be a bit tricky to clean. To remove residue and keep your travel mug sanitized, you can soak and scrub the mug parts with a dish soap solution or wash it with a baking soda and vinegar solution. To keep your travel mug clean between hand washes, you can rinse it after each use, do a quick vinegar soak, or run it through the dishwasher.

Using a Dish Soap Solution

Step 1 Take off the lid and remove the rubber seal, if possible.

  • In some cases, the rubber seal is permanently attached to the mug’s lid. If this is the case, leave the lid as is.
  • Dish soap is gentle on travel mug materials and won’t deteriorate the rubber seal. Since most travel mugs are made from stainless steel, dish soap will easily clean the stains up.
  • Avoid using any chlorine-based cleaning products, as these can start to break down the rubber seal.

Step 3 Soak the mug, lid, and rubber seal in the soapy water for 10 minutes.

  • Giving them time to soak will help soften and loosen any residue or germs.
  • Make sure that the toothbrush or bottle brush is clean and sanitized before using it to scrub your travel mug.

Step 5 Rinse all the mug, lid, and rubber seal with warm water.

  • If your travel mug lid has a drink opening, open and close the top to make sure the you wash off all the soap.

Step 6 Let the travel mug pieces air dry completely.

  • Replacing the lid before the mug is dry can trap moisture inside, which will allow bacteria to grow.
  • If you want to use your mug right after cleaning it, you can dry it with a clean paper towel or microfiber cloth. [7] X Research source
  • Repeat this process after every use if possible, or at least every other use.
  • If there are still stains remaining, add equal amounts of baking soda and salt. Let it sit in the mug for about 15 minutes before rinsing and wiping it clean.

Sanitizing with Baking Soda and Vinegar

  • Once you add the vinegar, the mixture will bubble up quite a bit. Wait for the bubbles to settle down for a few seconds before moving on to the next step. [9] X Research source
  • Make sure that the bubbles have settled down before replacing the lid. If it’s still bubbling up, the mixture could react and explode, leaving you with a mess.
  • If your mug has a drinking spout and you want to ensure it gets sanitized, you can leave the spout open and cover it tightly with your thumb while you shake. [12] X Research source

Step 4 Rinse the mug with warm water.

  • If the mug lid has a drinking opening, rinse it in both the open and closed positions to make sure you wash the dish soap out of the crevices. [14] X Research source

Step 6 Let your travel mug air dry completely before using it.

  • If possible, sanitize your travel mug after every use, or at least every other use.

Keeping Travel Mugs Clean Between Hand Washes

Step 1 Rinse your travel mug and lid with warm water after every use.

  • Allowing the bacteria to fester will not only make your mug harder to clean, it can also make you sick. Therefore, it’s important to rinse your mug after every use. [17] X Research source

Step 3 Run the mug and lid through the dishwasher if it’s dishwasher safe.

  • Many travel mugs have a rubber seal made of polypropylene, which has a high tolerance for heat. Therefore, these can generally withstand the heat of the dishwasher. To be on the safe side, however, it’s best to place it on the top rack since the top gets less hot than the bottom. [20] X Research source
  • Even if your travel mug is dishwasher safe, the high heat will likely start to deteriorate the rubber seal over time. Therefore, only run your travel mug through the dishwasher about once per week, and stop putting it in the dishwasher if the mug starts to leak.

Damp cloth to wipe down the lid

Once any loose particles have been removed from the travel mug lid, use a damp cloth to wipe down the lid. Make sure that the cloth is only ever slightly damp, as too much water could damage your travel mug lids. Once you’ve wiped down the lid, you can move on to the next step.

Cotton swab to reach hard-to-reach areas

If there are any hard-to-reach areas, such as the minute crevices and grooves of the travel mug lid, use a clean cotton swab to clean those areas. Make sure that the cotton swab is only slightly damp, so as not to damage the lid. Once you’ve cleaned all the hard-to-reach areas, you can move on to the next step.

Use a cleaning brush to scrub the lid

If there are any particularly stubborn stains, use a cleaning brush to scrub the travel mug lid. Make sure that the brush is only slightly damp, so as not to damage the travel mug lid. Once you’ve scrubbed the travel mug lid, you can move on to the next step.

Dry the lid with a clean towel

Once you’ve scrubbed the travel mug lid, make sure that you dry the lid with a clean towel. Once the travel mug lid is dry, you can move on to the next step.

If you’re a big coffee drinker, then chances are your thermos probably has some stains in it. Instead of buying a travel mug every couple of months, you simply need to learn the best way to clean and take care of your thermos.

You can clean your thermos with the same ingredients that you use for cleaning out a coffee maker and get the same great results. All you need are a few basic supplies and a few minutes of time.

The best way to have a stain-free coffee thermos is to understand how to wash it in the first place. If you have a vacuum flask, you should skip putting it in the dishwasher altogether. Instead, fill it with warm water and dish soap to wash. Do not submerge it in water, but allow it to soak for about five minutes.

After soaking, use a sponge or bottle brush to give it a thorough scrub to get rid of any residue. Rinse with hot water and dry it thoroughly with a clean dishcloth and let it drain with the lid off. To ensure your thermos is always fresh, give it a quick rinse with warm water before each use.

If you don’t have a vacuum flask, using the dishwasher with a homemade dishwasher detergent recipe or your regular commercial detergent is fine. Putting the thermos on the top shelf is best and safest.

Best Way to Clean a Coffee Thermos with Baking Soda and Vinegar

If you’ve neglected cleaning your coffee thermos and a simple wash with dish detergent and water doesn’t work, you need to step up your ingredients. A white vinegar and baking soda solution should do the trick on any stains your thermos has picked up. Use a variation of this recipe for cleaning a coffee maker with bake soda and vinegar, as well.

Baking Soda and Vinegar Cleaner

  • ½ cup of distilled white vinegar
  • 1 or 2 tablespoons of baking soda

Pour vinegar into your thermos and dump in one or two tablespoons of baking soda depending on how many cups your flask holds. Swish the thermos with the baking soda a vinegar cleaner inside, holding it over the sink in case the solution foams over. Do not place the cap on the spout.

Once the foam from the mixture settles down, pour hot water into the flask to fill it up. Allow the cleaning solution to sit for approximately ten minutes. To ensure you get every stain and to make the process easier, scrub the inside of the thermos with a bottle brush that is designed to reach those tight surfaces that you cannot get to by hand.

Pour out the mixture and rinse with hot water a few times, until it no longer smells of vinegar. Pat the thermos dry and let it air dry the rest of the way. This is not only the best way to clean glass coffee pot stains but is also perfect for a coffee maker or your favorite water bottle.

Take care of coffee pot stain removal with ease with vinegar and baking soda. This powerful combination makes a great coffee pot descaling solution to get rid of mineral buildup and debris that often accumulate on the interior of the machine. Vinegar and baking soda are the perfect home remedy for a variety of cleaning tasks around the home.

Descale a Thermos with Lemon Juice

This descaling solution for thermos is also one of the best ways to clean your flask. Thermoses or appliances you use every day can quickly accumulate build up and stains. Using a natural descaling solution like lemon juice is an easy and safe way to wash away this dirt.

Mix equal parts lemon juice and water and pour it into your thermos. Let it sit for about five minutes and scrub with a bottle brush or sponge. Dump the mixture and then rinse it a few times to get rid of the lemon scent. This cleaning solution is also perfect for your coffee pot.

Remove Coffee Stains from Stainless Steel Thermos with Ice and Salt

This might not sound like any homemade stainless steel cleaner you’ve heard of, but it works! Make sure your thermos is empty and then fill it a quarter of the way with crushed ice cubes. Pour in two to three big spoonfuls of salt. It works best if you use larger grain salt, such as sea salt or coarse-ground salt.

Screw the lid on your thermos and shake it well. The coarse salt and hard shards of ice will scrape away stains and build up on the metal. Shake it until you feel the ice and salt have done their job.

Pour out the mixture and fill the flask with warm water. Swirl it around to loosen any leftover debris and pour it out. Rinse the bottle a couple of times to remove all traces of the salt and then leave it to dry.

Use Denture Tablets to Remove Stains from Coffee Thermos

This is another cleaning tip that might sound surprising. However, one of the main ingredients in denture cleaner tablets is sodium bicarbonate, otherwise known as baking soda. Denture cleaning tablets are also perfectly safe to use on your flask, as they are designed to clean an object that goes in the mouth.

Pour boiling water into your thermos to the halfway mark. Let it sit for a few minutes to loosen the stains and other residue. Swirl the water around, so every part of the interior is wet. Drop in one or two denture cleaner tablets.

The water will start to bubble and foam, so hold your thermos over the sink. Leave the cap off. Let the flask sit for about half an hour and then pour out the mixture. Rinse the container a few times with fresh water and then leave it to dry.

Clean Thermos Flask with Hydrogen Peroxide

If you try one of the other cleaning tips but find that your stain is too tough, then you might need a stronger cleaning agent. Hydrogen peroxide can be used instead of vinegar in the baking soda and vinegar cleaning solution.

Peroxide is also the main ingredient in a homemade antibacterial spray so you know it will sanitize the flask at the same time it cleans it. While hydrogen peroxide certainly works on coffee stains, it is particularly useful for food thermoses.

However, if you use hydrogen peroxide to clean your flask, be sure to rinse it thoroughly after cleaning. To be safe, you may want to give it a quick clean with water and dishwashing liquid before using it.

Use this solution for how to get stains out of coffee cups , too. It’s an ideal cleaner and sanitizer for all sorts of items in the kitchen and bathroom.

Remove Coffee Stains with Dishwasher Powder

Dishwasher powder is a powerful cleaning agent that can remove coffee stains and a variety of other stains, as well. Using a powder is more effective than a liquid because it is abrasive and can scrape at stains. For this cleaning method, you need one tablespoon of powder per quart that your thermos can hold.

Scoop the dishwasher powder into your thermos and pour in some hot water, but do not fill it to the top. Place the lid on your thermos and shake for a few seconds. Take off the lid and fill it to the brink with water.

Leave it overnight with the lid off. In the morning, pour about half of the solution out and scrub the inside with a bottle brush. Empty and rinse a few times before leaving it to air dry.

To prevent coffee stains , rinse your thermos as soon as you can after using. It’s when the dregs of your coffee sit in it for a while that the stains form.

Items that you use every day can quickly develop stains, and this is particularly true of your thermoses, coffee cups, and flasks. Instead of throwing out your favorite things, you can remove coffee stains from stainless steel thermos, get hard water stains off stainless steel and clean other items using cheap, accessible, and safe ingredients. All of our tips are fast-acting and easy to follow.

Learn the best ways to remove coffee stains from your travel mugs and thermoses! These cleaning tips all use household items that get rid of grime and build-up, leaving your coffee thermos looking good as new. #clean #coffeethermos #thermos

How to clean travel mugs after your iced latte on the go

Everything you need to know about cleaning travel mugs

Gray travel mug repeating on green background

Good to know

Here's what you'll need, how to clean travel mugs.

Kara Thompson

You're gonna need to know how to clean travel mugs after a few drinks in yours. Can’t leave home without your reusable water bottle? Or maybe you opt for a travel mug that keeps your coffee warm all morning. Either way, travel mugs have become our trusty sidekicks during a long day of errands and a must-have if you’re traveling.

While they certainly come in handy, when it comes to cleaning travel mugs, a quick rinse doesn’t always do the trick (and it doesn’t provide your cup with a deep clean). Plus, many reusable mugs and water bottles aren’t dishwasher safe.

So, how can you truly get a deep clean without throwing your cup into the dishwasher? We’ve put together a step-by-step guide to help you ensure your go-to kitchen accessory stays sparkly clean. Don't forget to wash the straws that come in your water bottles and tumblers like these Stanley Cup alternatives or Shay Mitchell's favorite tumbler .

Time: 10 minutes (not including drying time)

Difficulty: Easy

Helpful hints: If you have a dishwasher-safe mug and don’t have the time or supplies for a deep hand wash, place your mug on the top shelf of the dishwasher for the best clean possible. Placing it on the top shelf can help eliminate potential damage in the dishwasher.

  •  Dish soap (you can't go wrong with Mrs. Meyer's liquid dish soap available at Amazon )
  • Distilled white vinegar (try Aunt Fannie's white vinegar available at Amazon )
  •  Warm water
  • Baking soda (stock up on this 12-pack of Arm & Hammer baking soda available at Amazon )
  • Mixing bowl (we like these Figmint glass mixing bowls from Target )

Step 1: Add your cleaning ingredients to your mug

Pour 1⁄2 cup of distilled white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of baking soda directly into your mug. We recommend pouring the contents into the mug while it’s held over the sink in case there’s any spillage.

Let the mixture sit for a few minutes. It should bubble together, creating a light foam consistency.

 Step 2: Seal and shake

Replace the lid on your travel cup. If it has a sliding opening, make sure it is completely closed and sealed. If it has a straw opening, make sure you cover the opening tightly. Shake the mixture inside your travel mug, almost as if you’re mixing a margarita in a cocktail shaker.

 Step 3: Rinse it out

Dispose of the vinegar and baking soda mixture into your sink and rinse the cup with warm water.

Step 4: Get ready to soak

Fill a bowl with hot water and a few drops of dish soap. Soak your mug in this mixture for approximately 10 minutes. Add all components of your travel mug into the bowl. If you have a lid with a rubber seal or detachable parts, remove those and soak them together.

Step 5: Give it a final rinse

Rinse off any remaining residue off the mug and lid.

Step 6: Dry your mug

The best method is to allow your mug to air dry overnight, but if you’re in a rush, drying it with a clean dish towel or paper towel will work just fine.

How do I know if my travel mug is dishwasher safe?

When you purchase a new travel mug, be sure to look at the packaging to see if it notes that the product is dishwasher safe. If you don’t remember or already tossed the packaging, then look for a dishwasher-safe symbol, stamp, or label. On mugs, these labels are typically located on the bottom and look like a square box containing plates, glasses, or both symbols.

How often do I need to clean my travel mug?

In an ideal world, we recommend rinsing it out after every use but life happens, right? One day your travel mug might be filled with water, the next it might be used to house coffee, then back to water. If you can get one deep clean in at least once a week, you should be good to go.

Tip: If you want a good, but not necessarily deep clean, soak the mug in warm soapy water overnight. When you are ready to fill it in the morning, rinse it out to get all the suds out.

Put those cleaning supplies to work and get started with our fool-proof method.  While you're at it, look around the kitchen for other items you may be forgetting to clean like attachments and accessories.

There's Mold Hiding in Your Travel Tumbler Lid — Here's Exactly How to Clean It Before You Get Sick

When was the last time you hand washed your YETI mug? Exactly.

Yeti Tumbler Mold

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

In fact, many travel mugs have removable seals to trap in heat or cold — and if they aren't properly cleaned and dried, these seals also trap moisture. Mold, which is a type of fungus, flourishes in moist, dark areas. Yep, that means with every sip of coffee, you're probably also drinking mold if your lid hasn't been properly cleaned.

After hearing that this was causing people to get sick, Veronica Lucas took a closer look at her travel mug and discovered tons of mold hidden underneath the lid's removable seal. She shared photos to Facebook, and the post went viral with 16,000 likes and more than 2,000 comments.

Veronica's not alone. In October 2018, Dr. Beau Pierce , a sports chiropractor based in Santa Maria, California, posted a now-viral video titled "A Yeti Style Cup Almost Killed My Patient." In the video, he explains how one of his patients mentioned how he was struggling to beat an ongoing sickness. After asking a series of questions, Dr. Beau noticed his patient's tumbler sitting on the counter and upon taking a closer look, discovered mold hidden underneath the lid.

It's a bit extreme to say that a tumbler was killing his patient, but the connection between a moldy lid and sickness is very likely. Consuming mold, at any degree, isn't good for your health. "Some molds cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems. And a few molds, in the right conditions, produce 'mycotoxins,' poisonous substances that can make you sick," according to the USDA .

While the YETI name is being thrown around, this is a common problem with all tumblers that have removable seals, no matter the brand. YETI, however, responded to GoodHousekeeping.com with the following statement:

We take our customer safety very seriously here at YETI and encourage customers to follow all product usage instructions, including proper cleaning of Rambler lids. For a thorough cleaning, we recommend removing the lid gasket and MagSlider, which should both be washed and dried separately before reinstalling. Learn more about how to clean YETI Rambler products here .

On their FAQ page , YETI explains that just sticking it in the dishwasher won't necessarily do the dirty work: "And here's an extra tip to prolong the life of your YETI cup: before it goes in the dishwasher, remove the rubber lid gasket to prevent any grime build up in the lid. Then throw it in the silverware basket." So, there. The solution has been in front of our faces all along.

To prevent mold, Carolyn Forte , Director of the Home Appliances and Cleaning Products Labs at the Good Housekeeping Institute , recommends that you scrub any areas that the dishwasher can't reach. "To get rid of all the residue and resulting mold, you should totally disassemble the tumbler and scrub all the pieces by hand in hot, soapy water to be sure they are clean," she explains. "These cups and thermal carafes have removable seals for a reason."

Her top tip: Stick it in the dishwasher before you wash it by hand. "While the dishwasher is great, it can’t do everything, and it can’t clean under these seals. In fact, water from the dishwasher can actually get trapped in there, which causes mold to grow." No, thanks!

To be clear: We're not telling you to ditch your tumblers altogether. This is simply a friendly reminder to give your reusable to-go cups a regular deep clean.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a travel mug.

Travel mugs are portable, compact, and easy-to-use drink containers for hot or cold drinks on the go. They’re designed to maintain your beverage at the desired temperature for a long period. They are reusable, sustainable, and made of durable and usually leak-free materials. Travel mugs are as easy as carrying water bottles while maintaining the temperature of your liquid.

What to look for when buying a travel mug?

A travel mug is designed to keep your favorite beverage at its desired temperature when traveling or running errands. Therefore, it is important to note several important factors before buying.

  • Construction: Most travel cups come in either stainless steel, BPA-free plastic, or silicone. Stainless steel offers durability and vacuum-insulated construction that helps keep your beverage either hot or cold for several hours.
  • Portability: Since it is meant for traveling, portability is extremely important. Try to look for cups that are small, lightweight, and easy to carry. However, ensure that the travel mug has more capacity than your ordinary ‌ ceramic mug.

How long can a travel mug keep beverages hot or cold?

It varies from mug to mug. Good travel mugs usually keep drinks hot for four to six hours, and cold for six to eight hours.

What color is better for travel mugs?

Darker colors are better for mugs since they provide good insulation. They can keep beverages cold or hot for a longer period. Some people also believe that darker colors enhance the taste of the drink. However, it is essential to know that color is not a big deal for travel mugs since the inner wall construction and insulation are important to keep the drink to their temperature.

How do I clean my travel mug?

Most of the travel mugs are top-rack dishwasher safe, though some manufacturers say to use the dishwasher only for lids. Handwashing the body of the mug increases the lifespan of the mug.

Print Technique

Sublimation is a process of printing to fabric (and other substances) that provides the best quality, most durable printing option. In sublimation, the inks are fused into the fabric as opposed to sitting on top of the basic such as in inkjet or screen printing. The process not only gives fabrics a softer touch after the printing, but it is also very durable. The color remains strong in outdoor lighting and after extensive washing so it’s the ideal process for Mugs.

Everything on the Artistshot Marketplace is printed just for you, so a lot of thought goes into the way each item is made and shipped. We work with a global team of manufacturers and shipping partners to get your order from the site to your door.

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk travel guide.

  • 2. Attractions
  • 3. Cultural life
  • 4. Souvenirs

Khabarovsk, Russia fascinates visitors with its unusual heritage and fabulous untouched nature. Tourists are drawn to the native culture, eclectic architecture and mesmerizing waters in this off-the-beaten-track destination, which promises a unique and memorable vacation.

As the center of Russia’s far eastern region of Khabarovsk Krai, the city offers celebrations throughout the year which are sure to give added flair to your trip, from traditional culture days to large-scale food fests. It is easy to keep a full itinerary during your stay thanks to its many theaters, museums, restaurants, workshops and quest rooms. Guests who want a more relaxed holiday can venture into the serenity of Khabarovsk nature, including the coast of the Sea of Japan or one of the region’s many picturesque lakes .

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

  • Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
  • Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

Khabarovsk, Russia

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

  • Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
  • Triad Pantomime Theater;
  • Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
  • White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.

    1. Pour baking soda and distilled white vinegar into the mug. Remove the lid on your travel mug. Pour 1 teaspoon (5 grams) of baking soda into the mug first, then add 1⁄2 cup (120 mL) of distilled white vinegar. [8] Once you add the vinegar, the mixture will bubble up quite a bit.

  9. Best way to clean a TRAVEL MUG
