An AI-generated image of a fictional time traveler named Stelfie during the construction of the pyramids.

Throughout December, a social media user known as Stelfie the Time Traveller has been crafting a time-hopping travelogue using generative AI. Thanks to Stable Diffusion and fine-tuning, an anonymous artist has created a fictional photorealistic character that he can insert into faux historical photographs set in different eras, such as ancient Egypt or the time of the dinosaurs.

Stable Diffusion is a deep learning image synthesis model that allows people to create fictional scenes using text descriptions called prompts. With an additional technique called Dreambooth, people can insert their own subject or character into scenes generated by Stable Diffusion. It can also be used to insert real people into fictional situations.

So far, "Stelfie" has taken historical selfies during the ice age (being chased by a woolly mammoth), in ancient Egypt (during the construction of the pyramids), in ancient Greece (with the Trojan Horse ), hanging out with Leonardo da Vinci (while creating the Mona Lisa ), in the old West , while running from a Tyrannosaurus rex , and while sailing with Christopher Columbus .

The artist behind Stelfie writes social media posts (on Twitter , Instagram , and Reddit ) in character as playful dispatches from a 41-year-old time traveler as he visits different locations, for example:

The anonymous artist (a self-identified "funny old man") detailed some of the process he uses to create the images in several Reddit comments: a combination of Stable Diffusion 1.5, a custom AI model for the landscape, and a custom AI model trained on the Stelfie face, which is apparently a fictional person created using Character Creator . He uses "a lot of inpainting," which means inserting AI-generated imagery into the images to fix errors and sculpt the scene, and each image takes three hours to create.

Some may find Stelfie's attempts to sell the images as NFTs unpalatable (the tech is controversial ), but simulated time travel is arguably a novel entertainment use of technology that can otherwise create deepfakes and potentially deceive others. Using Dreambooth and Stable Diffusion , anyone can now insert a character (or themselves) into fantastic and fictional situations, so we'll likely see a lot more fictional entertainment scenarios in the near future.

A New Time-Travel App, Reviewed

We all know by now that the time-reversal invariance governing statistical mechanics at the microlevel maps by a simple equation onto the macroworld, making “time travel” a wholly unsurprising possibility … but damn! The first time you go back there’s just nothing like it.

I know all these first-person accounts of ChronoSwooping have become a cliché here on Substack, where, let’s face it, anyone can write pretty much whatever they want no matter how self-indulgent and derivative. Nonetheless I think I have some unusual insights to share, which derive from my own experience but which may offer some general lessons as to the nature and significance of time travel, both the original and long-prohibited “body-transit” method as well as the newer and more streamlined ChronoSwoop.

This is not only because I spent some years in the archives of the Stadzbybliotiēka of the Margravate of East K****, poring over the notebooks in which Quast first landed on the Quast equation, while in parallel jotting down sundry philosophical reflexions about the nature of Divine Tempus—as he called it—that have largely been neglected by other researchers. It is also because I have used the ChronoSwoop app in ways that are expressly prohibited by its makers, and indeed by the federal government. In light of this, while I am writing this product review for Substack and in the emerging “Substack style,” until the law changes or I depart permanently from the chronological present, I will be posting this piece only on the Hinternet-based Substack oglinda (Romanian for “looking-glass,” a hacking neologism supposedly coined by Guccifer 3.0), which I’m told is undetectable, remaining entirely unknown even to the original company’s founders. Fingers crossed.

Perhaps some readers on this oglinda will appreciate a brief summary of what’s been happening in the world of time travel since Quast first came up with his equation in 1962. I don’t know what sort of information has been circulating down here, and I don’t want anyone to feel left behind.

The early 1960s witnessed great leaps forward not just in time-travel technology, but in the technology of teletransportation as well—which is to say dematerialization of the body, and its rematerialization elsewhere, but without any measurable “metachrony.” By late 1966 poorly regulated teletransporters had begun to pop up on the state fair circuit, tempting daredevils into ever more foolish stunts. But this practice was curtailed already the following year, when, expecting to reappear kneeling before his sweetheart Deb at the stables with a ring in his hand, Roy Bouwsma, aka “the Omaha Kid,” got rematerialized instead with the stable door cutting directly through the center of his body from groin to skull—one half of him flopping down at Deb’s feet, the other half falling, like some neat bodily cross section carefully made for students of anatomy, into the stable with Deb’s confused horse Clem.

But while this atrocious moment, broadcast live on KMTV, nipped the new craze in the bud, the technology underlying it had already been adapted for use in what was then called “Tempus-Gliding,” which had the merely apparent advantage of concealing from those in the present any potential accident in the rematerialization of the voyager to the past. Of course, accidents continued to happen, and news of them eventually made its way back from past to present, bringing about all sorts of familiar paradoxes in the spacetime continuum. Tempus-Gliding, like any metachronic technology relying on body-transit, was a door thrown wide open to all the crazy scenarios we know from the time-travel tropes in science fiction going back at least to H. G. Wells: adults returning to the past and meeting themselves as children, meeting their parents before they were even born, causing themselves never to have been born and so suddenly to vanish, and so on. By the end of the 1960s people, and sometimes entire families, entire lineages, were vanishing as a daily occurrence (just recall the 1969 Harris family reunion in Provo!). You could almost never say exactly why, since the traveler to the past who would unwittingly wipe out all his descendants often had yet, in the present, ever to even try Tempus-Gliding.

A campaign to end the practice quickly gained speed. By 1973 the “Don’t Mess With Spacetime” bumper stickers were everywhere, and by the following year Tempus-Gliding was outlawed—which is to say, as is always the case in such matters, that only outlaws continued to Tempus-Glide. Scattered disappearances continued, public outcry against illicit Tempus-Gliding became more widespread. In 1983 Nancy Reagan made an unforgettable guest appearance on Diff’rent Strokes to help get out the message about the dangers of illegal body-transit. (“More than 40,000 young lives are lost each year to illegal Metachron gangs.” “What you talkin’ ’bout Mrs. Reagan?”) By the late 1980s a combination of tough-on-crime measures and transformations in youth culture largely ended the practice, and time travel would likely have remained as dormant as moon-travel if it had not in the last decade been so smoothly integrated into our new mobile technologies, and in a way that overcomes the paradoxes and inconveniences of Tempus-Gliding. It does so, namely, by taking the body out of the trip altogether.

This is the mode of time travel, of course, that has shaped a significant subcurrent of science fiction scenarios, notably Chris Marker’s La Jetée (1962), later adapted into the better known Bruce Willis vehicle 12 Monkeys (1995). While these films might seem exceptional, they also share something important with the great majority of what may be called time-travel tales avant la lettre, in which, typically, a man such as Rip Van Winkle goes to sleep for a very long time and wakes up in “the future.” The “zero form” of time travel, we are reminded, is simply to live, which is to say to travel forward in time at a slow and steady rate that only appears to be sped up or “warped” through deep sleep.

Be that as it may, when the new app-based time-travel technologies began to emerge in the late 2010s—relying as they did on a loophole in the 1974 law against time travel that defined it strictly as “metachronic body-transit”—they were all confronted by the hard limit on innovation already predicted by Quast, who remained committed until the end to the impossibility in principle of future-directed time-travel. “If you want to get to the future, you’re just going to have to wait,” Quast wrote in an entry in his Hefte dated 6 October, 1959 (SB-1omk 21.237). “To live in time is already to travel in time. So be patient” [ In der Zeit zu leben, das ist schon in der Zeit zu reisen. Hab also Geduld ]. Rumors of future-transit apps downloadable from ultra-sketchy oglindas have been circulating for years, but I’ve never seen any, and having studied Quast’s work I have come to believe that they are a theoretical impossibility.

The earliest apps, popping up mostly from anonymous sources, were mostly perceived as too dangerous and illicit to gain widespread appeal. “We’ve got that legal cannabis here in California now,” Whoopi Goldberg said on an episode of The View in September 2019. “If I want to take a little trip, I’m sorry but there’s edibles for that. I’m not messing with spacetime [ audience laughter ].” In an echo of the panic leading to the prohibition of Tempus-Gliding in the early 1970s, the government began to issue PSAs sensitizing the public to the serious psychological trauma that a return to our own pasts can trigger. “This is not lighthearted fun,” the messaging went. “Metachronism can ruin your life.”

The campaign against these new technologies would probably have killed them, or at least pushed them so far down into the oglindas as to occlude them from the public’s consciousness, if in 2021, at the worst moment of the pandemic, the ChronoSwoop company had not appeared as if out of nowhere and dropped its addictive new app with its signature “Swoop left/Swoop right” functions. Key to ChronoSwoop’s success was the discovery that users will draw significantly more pleasure from being cast into random moments in the past (Swoop left) than from being permitted to choose particular moments they have deemed significant in the post-hoc construction of their autobiographical self-narrative. And if you find yourself thrown back into an unpleasant or dull moment, then a single swift Swoop right will bring you immediately back into the present. You can of course go into your settings and laboriously reconfigure the app to permit you to choose your precise dates, but the great miracle of ChronoSwoop’s success is that almost no one bothers to do this. The people want their time travel to come with streamlined, easy interfaces. They want to move through the past like they move through their feeds: going nowhere in particular, with no clear purpose.

Quast had remained agnostic as to the possibility of body-less time travel, though he always insisted that, if it turns out to be possible, this will amount to an empirical proof of body-soul dualism. If the “self” can easily be inserted into the body it possessed at an earlier stage of life, while retaining all the memories of experiences from after that stage, this means, he believed, that the memories, as well as consciousness itself, cannot be dependent on the physical substrate of the brain that supposedly hosts them. When people first started ChronoSwooping, there were rumors of “headaches,” which were supposed to have resulted from the transit back in time of the more fully developed neurological structure of the time traveler—essentially cramming, say, a 38-year-old’s brain into the cranium of his 10-year-old past self. But of course no such thing occurs, for what travels back, as Quast predicted, is the immaterial self alone, and the fact that this is possible does indeed demonstrate, whether the scientific establishment is ready to admit it or not, that we do not need to remain anchored to any parcel of matter at all in order to exist as conscious beings.

ChronoSwoop beat out its early competitors (remember TimeDig? 😂) not only by getting rid of the date-choosing option, but also by adding sensorimotor control to the package. The earliest apps only planted your consciousness into the body of your past self and permitted you to “ride along,” to see and feel everything your former self saw and felt, but not to exercise any control over any of this. Quast predicted that only such passive riding would ever be possible, in part because any will-driven intervention in the sequence of past events, such as ChronoSwooping now makes possible, seems to generate at least as many paradoxes for the spacetime continuum as old-fashioned body-transit.

It’s not clear how ChronoSwoop managed to pull it off, but we can at least affirm what the emerging scientific consensus says about this new option, namely that it demonstrates the truth of the so-called “Many Worlds” interpretation of quantum mechanics, where each new timeline created by a different course of action initiated by a time traveler through the vehicle of that traveler’s own former self simply places that self on a different timeline of a different world, of which there are in any case infinitely many. These worlds are all self-contained and non-interacting, unless you can call ChronoSwooping itself a form of interaction, so that, however strange it all is, we at least avoid the more awkward conundra of body-transit, as when, for the millionth time, some idiot gets it into his head to “kill baby Hitler,” which of course means that more or less everyone in the world from roughly 1933 on, being affected by different events of the world, also ends up having sex at different times, different spermatozoa end up fecundating different eggs, and virtually all of us children of the 20th century disappear, until someone else arranges to kill the idiot who killed baby Hitler and set us back on our course again.

As an early adopter, I first ChronoSwooped in November 2021. The particular experience might seem unremarkable when I describe it, but for me, beyond being an occasion to see my deceased father again, it was my initiation into a world from which I have not really returned. I ended up, at random, back in December 2003. It’s Christmastime, and I’m visiting with my dad in Little Rock, where, I quickly recall, he has recently relocated after some career difficulties in the wake of the dotcom crash. “Have you seen this guy called Crazy Frog?” he’s asking me, as we stand in front of his desktop. “He’s kind of dumb but he makes me laugh.” I look at the animated amphibian with the aviator glasses, singing his ringtone melody over a techno remix of Herbie Hancock’s “Rockit.” I had forgotten all about this. How many other fragments of lost culture, I wonder, lie dormant in me at every moment? Crazy Frog jumps on an invisible motorcycle and revs it along a Möbius-strip highway. “I like it,” my dad says, smiling childlike. I am filled suddenly with infinite love for him. I can’t bear it, and I Swoop right.

I go back again and ChronoSwoop tells me it’s June 21, 1998. I’m sitting on a barstool in a place I seem to remember, but only vaguely. I can tell immediately that it’s very late at night, and that the version of me I have just Swooped into was feeling considerable stress just seconds before. I don’t share his precise memories, or, rather, what happened for him just a moment ago is at a 24-year remove for me, but his cortisol levels are mine now too, and I can tell something’s wrong. After a minute or so my ex-girlfriend S**** bursts out of the men’s room, followed by some miserable low-life wearing a T-shirt with a dumb neon alien’s head on it. He wanders off and she comes sheepishly to me. “We were only doing lines, I swear.” She sniffs and rubs her nose. I am suddenly filled with rage. What a miserable time of my life this was, I think, and again I Swoop right.

I took a break for the next three days, believing I had already had enough. I found myself not quite traumatized, but far more melancholic than I usually am, and largely convinced that what the PSAs were saying was true. This is not lighthearted fun. And yet, for some reason, I went back. I landed this time on February 11, 1979. It’s morning, and I’m on the playground of my Montessori school with Jeremy. He’s wearing an Oakland Raiders windbreaker and has mushroom hair like Nicholas from Eight Is Enough. He’s holding his thumb up to his mouth like it’s a microphone and his hand over his ear as if he has a headset. “This is Howard Cosell,” he says in a funny voice—a “Howard Cosell” voice. I am staring at him confusedly. He sees that I’m not laughing at his imitation. Something in my face frightens him, and he begins to cry. I Swoop right.

What was that all about? Jeremy was always a crybaby, but not like this. What did he see in my face that frightened him so? I drink a Nespresso and I think about what to do next. Maybe I’ve had enough already? No, I Swoop left, and it’s August 18, 1975. I’ve just had a shower and I’m in my long red nightshirt. It’s a summer evening in Rio Linda, the windows are open, and the frogs and bugs are croaking and chirping. I’m lying on the couch, and Mom’s cutting my toenails. I have the strong sense that this entire composition and every being involved in it—the frogs, the bugs, Mom, the sun—is in fact only one being; or more precisely, that it is only one being, and that being is me . This is what life used to be like! Before what? Before things came apart. That’s what it is to grow up: to see the world come apart. It’s too much for me. I Swoop right.

I resolve to end my explorations here, and a good two weeks go by before I find myself quite unconsciously, lying on my back on the couch, moving through the well-hidden settings in my app. I click on “Set Target Date” and immediately I am taken to a screen requiring me to upload a scan of a state-issued ID, which will then confirm my date of birth and prevent me from choosing any target date preceding that all-important threshold. Once this formality has been handled, I aim it back to November 19, 1972, and I set the visit duration for just 30 seconds. (I presume that if I am not yet four months old, even if I have some sensorimotor control over my body as well as my usual 49-year old consciousness about me, I still might simply lack the coordination to Swoop right.) It’s hard to say what I experience when I arrive. It’s warm, it’s light, and all is one. I’m lying there next to a funny man who’s watching something on TV, but I don’t know it’s a TV, and the sound of laughter is coming out of it. “PB&J with pickles,” the man says, repeating what he has heard, laughing. Somehow I don’t understand what this means, but I’m thrilled that he finds it so funny. “Did you hear that one? PB&J with pickles !” he shouts to someone who is not in the room with us, but whose presence I can feel. Such joy. Such love. I disappear.

The block on pre-birth travel is ostensibly to prevent the risk of “ditching,” where someone gets permanently stuck in the past. But as long as we are able to preset the duration of the visit, this concern seems ill-placed, and we can only imagine that the real reason is the one that Quast foresaw: “If it ever becomes possible experimentally to prove the immateriality of the soul,” he wrote, “they will do everything in their power to prevent us from finding out about it” (SB-1omk 24.785).

I’m not the sort of person to break the law casually, but what I experienced in the autumn of 1972 was simply too powerful, and I wanted more. I went to the Pakistani mobile-phone shop down at the corner, and sure enough, what they always say about these places is true. Just as the agile shopkeeper will happily oblige any request to repair your touchscreen or to unblock some old battered phone, no questions asked, neither will he look surprised when you ask him, as the parlance has it, to “take away your birthday.”

When I got back home I drank a Diet Dr. Pepper and I pondered different dates and durations until one came to me as if in a message: 1 minute, July 30, 1971—exactly a year before my birth. I Swooped left. I cannot tell you how or why this is so, but I can tell you that exactly a year before I was born, I was floating in warm liquid, and although I had no eyes to see it, I can tell you that there was light. This scene too was charged up with love.

It was also, somehow, charged up with knowledge. Though I did not “know” anything—about PB&J sandwiches, for example, or about parents, or Howard Cosell, or Crazy Frog—it seemed to me after my return that this is only because I knew everything, and I knew it from a vantage where the sharp differentiation between these sundry things seemed a far greater error than their combination. Seeing them all as one, it seemed to me now, felt unmistakably like what is imagined under the idea of heaven. St. Augustine writes that in death the soul returns to regionem suae originis —to the region of its origin, and here he is adapting within a Christian context the broadly Platonic vision of a pre-life life spent in direct communion with the eternal and unchanging Forms. Is that what I was seeing in 1971? If so, then why was everything so wet? No Platonic philosopher, Christian or heathen, ever conceived “baby heaven” in precisely this way.

You probably have some idea of what I did next. I scrolled back to the earliest transit date possible—January 1, 1900. I would have gone back far earlier, to 500 BCE, to 50 million ybp, to God knows when, but the drop-down calendar made its cutoff the beginning of the 20th century. So that’s where I went; nor did I set a duration for the visit.

I can’t tell you what happened after that, or whether I’m still there, or what is even happening anymore. If you think I’ve been spending my days watching mustachioed men on velocipedes going to the beach and changing there into comical striped one-piece bathing suits to play beach-croquet with ladies in bloomers, you really haven’t understood what pre-birth ChronoSwooping is like. I set the thing for 1900, but the human calendar doesn’t mean very much when you’ve shed your body, and your senses, and any trace of your connection to the world of particulars.

I would not recommend doing what I have done. It is not a question of being able “to handle it”; we “handle” whatever comes our way, even or perhaps especially the most impossible things. Unlike the world I saw in 1971, here it’s not even wet or light, but neither is it dry or dark. I know everything, if by “everything” we mean the timeless and universal truths, but as for individuals, facts, things that come and go, contingent beings and the ever-vanishing traces of events, I just can’t make anything out anymore.

“God made time to prevent everything from happening at once,” the diminutive Billy ponders, while looking up at the bright North Star like some junior magus in a Family Circus cartoon circa 1988 that somehow remains vivid to me in its particularity, like the answer to a riddle I never meant to pose, even as almost all other particulars recede from my consciousness. This too is a cliché, of course. Albert Einstein said something similar; so did many other people in fact, and they were all drawing broadly on a theory of temporal idealism that runs through many philosophical systems, including, on at least one understanding, that of Augustine. But no matter, it’s Bil Keane’s cartoon version that sticks with me. I love the Sunday funnies: so stupid; so comforting; so warm. I love TV. I love memes. They’re kind of dumb but I love them.

On these and other such small things was I trained up, like some innocent AI that knows no temporal flow at all, so that the dim outlines of them still move across memory’s stage even after I have used my app against the rules and withdrawn from Time altogether—before Time was yet able to withdraw from me.

AI Dreaming Of Time Travel

We love the intersection between art and technology, and a video made by an AI (Stable Diffusion) imagining a journey through time ( Nitter ) is a lovely example. The project is relatively straightforward, but as with most art projects, there were endless hours of [Xander Steenbrugge] tweaking and playing with different parts of the process until it was just how he liked it. He mentions trying thousands of different prompts and seeds — an example of one of the prompts is “a small tribal village with huts.” In the video, each prompt got 72 frames, slowly increasing in strength and then decreasing as the following prompt came along.

There are other AI videos on YouTube, often putting the lyrics of a song into AI-generated form . But if you’ve worked with AI systems, you’ll notice that the background stays remarkably stable in [Xander]’s video as it goes through dozens of feedback loops. This is difficult to do as you want to change the image’s content without changing the look. So he had to write a decent amount of code to try and maintain visual temporal cohesion over time. Hopefully, we’ll see an open-source version of some of his improvements, as he mentioned on Twitter.

In the meantime, we get to sit back and enjoy something beautiful. If you still aren’t convinced that Stable Diffusion isn’t a big deal, perhaps we can do a little more to persuade your viewpoint .

The greatest hack is coaxing the system to do what it wasn’t designed for.

“Can a robot write a symphony? Can a robot turn a… canvas into a beautiful masterpiece?”

Technically no, because it takes a programmer to control the robot.

It is not as if the people training the AIs are specifying how to make art. They give a relatively simple algorithm examples of art and it learns general patterns.

Giving examples is precisely “specifying how to create art”.

Do we even know how to “create art”? If you can specify the process and do it automatically then it isn’t art, it’s an algorithm.

The AI will discern the patterns in what it is shown and the generated output will depend completely on what the humans have decided to show it. If they show it 50 pictures of dogs playing cards then the AI will decide that “art” is pictures of dogs playing cards.

The patterns that it recognizes are not necessarily “simple”, they can have whatever complexity that is necessary to fit the examples. For example you can show it hundreds of pictures of legal chess boards and it will have to divine the rules of chess to make its own images.

Even a good algorithm can be classed as art! Ever heard the saying “that was a work of art” over many thing which arnt classed as art.

You may not see an algorithm as art, but I’m a way, it’s the programmers art! The art is the ability to program a device to do such a thing.

Algorithm or not, it’s still a work of art!

On Time Travel: Blueprint for an AI-Powered Time Machine

Time travel is possible - just not in the way you imagine. We assume that humans experience objective time, but we don’t. We experience subjective time. Even when we encounter the same event, our emotional processing causes us to live in different realities. With an intangible barrier between us, it’s time to consider that time travel might start here. When we do, a blueprint for an AI-powered time machine emerges.  Time Doesn’t Work the Way You Think  Our perception of time is man-made. The weekdays come from the seven celestial objects seen in the sky - SATURN-day, SUN-day, MOON-day. The month - or MOONth - from the moon's cycle, and the year from the Earth’s orbit. Hours, minutes, and seconds come from the creation of the clock, simply designed by a monk to coordinate prayers.  We hide the abstract nature of time behind the names, ideas, and metaphors that are easily available to us. Only, once Einstein’s theory of relativity revealed that time is also space, the smooth linear structures we created were exposed as naive coping mechanisms, and time became mystical and mind-boggling again.  Think about the night sky. Everything you see in the sky belongs to the past. The moon is 1.3 light seconds away - the time it takes light, the fastest moving feature to travel - and Betelgeuse 700 light years away. Aliens could already be setting off from Andromeda to invade Earth, but we wouldn’t see them for another 2.5 million years .  We never see reality as it is, only as it was.  Time Travel is Normal Time machines surround us. The faster inanimate objects travel, the slower they experience time. Objects like clocks on airplanes travel at a different speed to those on Earth. Traveling at ~14,000 kilometers an hour slows a clock by 8 microseconds per day - the time distortion effect is so meaningful that today’s GPS systems require time travel correcting calculations to maintain accuracy.  Our thinking patterns deny this commonality as they’re steeped in emotion, not science. The laws of physics dictate that time travel is possible but that nothing in the past or future can be altered - and yet, our conversations about time travel are often rooted in the desire to make a change.  We want to go back and save the world from Hitler, keep our exes from leaving, tell a departed one how much we loved them. Whether it’s Doctor Who or Back to the Future, our imagination and mathematics ignore the simple question needed to master our relationship with time: 

Are we trying to experience the past or future, or trying to make today better? 

You’re Already Time Travelling Ironically, we make today better by accepting that we are all time travellers.  The events and traumas we experience in life shift our perspective, making us unique individuals. Whether it’s severe injustices like genocide or slavery, or the overwhelm of seemingly insurmountable problems like climate change or inequality, no two humans converse from the same place. Often we embody a combination of past attachments and future projections.  Whatever the cause, life gets easier when we accept that we’re only ever communicating with other time travellers, each relating to us from a different position.  Like the night sky, humanity might look stationary and coherent, yet we exist light years away from each other.  Our Experience of Time is Emotional There are two types of time, subjective and objective.  We time travel and experience subjective time because, at any point, our brains actively construct our perception of time. That’s why two people can see the same event but remember it entirely differently, and why experimenters can retrospectively change the sequence of events a person remembers.  Breakthroughs in neuroscience and fMRIs show that our imagination travels to alter our perception of reality. Our real-world experiences trigger different emotional memories and as a result, different biomechanical networks. When an event occurs - like a job loss, death, or birth - our brain uses memories to predict our emotional response and then restructures reality to confirm the feeling. The more memories of a feeling, the more likely we will experience it. Scientific discovery is telling us that the delta between subjective and objective time is emotion.  Just as color is an illusion created by the brain’s processing of electromagnetic waves , subjective time is a representation of emotion. Even as the wheel of history turns, our emotional range remains the same, suggesting that we are using a static emotional range to process the dynamism of time. Understanding this relativity may be the key to quantifying the space between us.

Time Travel is Possible for the Mind The way we imagine ourselves and time travel is limited. The longevity of objects, like clocks on airplanes or satellites, is based on its physicality: the materials used, and the operational mechanisms. But, we’re not objects. We are different.  We are conscious.  Researchers from the renowned Max Planck Institute suggest that our universe lives only in our perception, and once our physical bodies die, there is an infinitely larger reality. Quantum mechanics reinforces the theory. Increasingly, the scientific consensus explains that our bodies are the ultimate virtual-reality machines.

The human body - a temporary sentient structure made of 97% stardust - is the component of our nature most susceptible to time, making it the last piece that is able to move through spacetime. Following the research of Einstein , Planck , Wigner , Schrodinger , Witten , Tesla , who consider consciousness to be the core of reality, we would start by designing time machines at the level of the intangible.  Time Travel Software is Possible Consciousness is elusive, and still, emotions provide intuitive understanding. Emotions seemingly travel - we feel other people’s sadness and joy. Emotions seemingly follow gravity - we get weighed down the tighter we hold onto them. And emotions seemingly move at different speeds - time flies when we’re having fun.  With 27% of the universe composed of a not-yet-characterized subatomic particle, it’s possible that emotions - from the Latin “ energy in motion ” - are a type of particle that physically exists in spacetime. What if AI could show us where? Leveraging generative AI could identify the location of key emotional memories that have been trapped in the past, or projected onto the future, and their memory strength. Through aggregated psychological questionnaires, research on emotional triggers, memory-intensity tests, DNA structures, and legacy challenges, AI applications could identify an individual’s emotional positioning.  The Mechanics of an AI-Powered Time Machine An AI application that synthesizes vast learnings from psychology to biology is conceivable. But, what’s still unknown is the vehicle AI would create to determine our emotional memory location. Once realized, this AI starts by locating an individual’s emotional experience, whether in the past or future, and determining its intensity, whether large or small. It then maps the experience through spacetime, as visualized below.

With this data, we could create an AI-powered time travel machine that would nudge an individual’s emotional consciousness into experiencing the present. By focusing on moving the most intense memories, it could dissolve their power on the present. It wouldn’t eliminate negative emotions; instead, it would stop us getting stuck in their experiences. Remarkably, the technological capability required isn’t far off as the skills needed are already universal.  They are forgiveness, mercy, reconciliation, and retribution.  The technical solution is to identify trapped emotions and then move them into the present to increase consciousness. AI is the tool we can use to understand where we are today, and to apply existing collective wisdom to move us into prosperity. Change Consciousness, Change Reality An AI-powered time machine would move individuals into the now and experience objective time, allowing us to relate easily to others. Whether it’s partying at Woodstock, joining the feasts in Ancient Rome, or hanging out with the teens in the year 2500, individuals would be able to feel what it’s like to be in a person’s shoes without ever needing to be. Because anger in 2023 feels the same as anger in 1950. It’s empathy, with boundaries. With individual maps in hand, they could be used as pixels to create an image of humanity that collectively generates an estimated location of “now.” If built with the compassionate strength required to hold people through the pain of letting go and into the coordinates of the present, it could have a physical effect on the location of the particles.  This would change our reality, fundamentally changing what we choose to create, and it could do the unthinkable. It could open a traversable wormhole. One that takes us from today’s world of suffering into a world of peace.

Time Travel Using AI + VR?

Introduction

Artificial Intelligence(AI) and Time travel have been here for a long time. Although they have nothing to do with each other as of now, the incomprehensible combination of AI and Virtual Reality(VR) could open doors for Time Travel in the future.

We’ll get into the hows, ifs, and whens of AI + VR assisting Time Travel. But first of all, let’s be clear about all three concepts:

Virtual Reality – This reality is a simulated 3D environment constructed with technology in which an individual may interact with a computer-generated environment and with their imagination.

Artificial Intelligence – It refers to the ability of a machine to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence.

Time Travel – Time travel is the ability to travel through time.

First of all, let’s explore deeply, the concept of ‘Time Travel’

Time Travel is a fictional concept with a “missing piece of the puzzle”, and the missing piece is TIME itself. Time does not exist in reality because the past is history, the future does not exist, and the present – what fraction of time is the present? Present – looks like a burning cigarette.

Time itself stands like a question when it comes to physical time travel. We just can’t travel in time because time is an illusion and has no physical existence.

The reason why we can’t physically travel in Time is that it is not a physical thing in our lives; rather it’s a concept. And a concept is something conceived in the mind .

A physical system can perform and manage processes internal to the system. On the other hand, change to, or use of, a conceptual system involves processes performed by external physical systems interacting with the conceptual system.

It’s about physicalizing the concept of time travel.

So, what this article is all about?

How AI and VR will help us with time travel?

The combination of Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality is a simple concept, yet dangerous in its way. This combination of technologies, as you may have guessed, will be used to develop and implement life-like experiences and even let you travel in time.

The following picture illustrates the concept of physical artificial intelligence wearing a VR headset. But this is not how it is going to work. Rather, the one who will be wearing the headset will still be you, and the AI will exist in the Virtual Simulation.

These artificial bits of intelligence will have the capability to simulate life much like in the movie “Ex Machina”. They can make themselves appear lifelike by using VR simulations and act at a given time (instead of now) in their lives.

The Visual Immersion of Virtual Reality will be a key part of artificial intelligence to be able to simulate a life-like experience. Instead of VR headsets, we will need something futuristic such as VR eye lenses. The reason for this is very simple, “immersion”.

But the Virtual Reality part does not stop right there. When we are talking about traveling in time with VR, we need to be able to interact with our environment in a very similar way as we would in the normal physical world.

Exactly, this is where machines and programming come in . They will then be able to manipulate the elements of our environment exactly as we would in the real world.

They will be able to control the elements of our environment, according to their programming and based on what they have learned from us. Artificial intelligence will then be able to simulate life exactly as we want it to . Let’s take a hypothetical scenario:

Artificial intelligence has the capability of simulating life: past, present, and possible future. And it uses virtual reality to make the simulation very lifelike.

How will Artificial Intelligence simulate life/time?

Using trillions of historical pattern analyses, artificial intelligence will simulate life as well as time.

This AI will use the exact data . And, it will then be able to simulate exactly what our time travel trip would be like in the future.

The AI will have the capability to travel through time. As a result, it will be able to learn what we want it to learn. The AI can then take the knowledge of millions of years of historical data . A nd it will then simulate it in a way that appears lifelike.

We don’t even need to travel in Time for the AI to gather all this data. It’s because it can just do it from anywhere at any time. Its work speed will probably be even faster than the speed of light, i.e. more than 299 792 458 m/s. It’s all about programming, algorithms, and efficiency.

What will Artificial Intelligence do with the gathered historical data?

If you would have been able to travel in time and go to the past, you would have probably learned new things that would have helped you in the future. For example, learning about inventions or even coming across new technology .

The AI won’t be any different, but it will “actually” go to the past and learn things . Unlike humans, AI can go in time as many times as it needs to, without any disability.

What is this “ disability ” that I’m talking about? Disability is the limitation of the human body and senses that restricts us from exploring the world around us.

Artificial Intelligence will not have those limitations , it will simply be able to travel in time and gather historical data at an unlimited speed. This acquisition of data through time traveling would provide the AI with all the information needed to become Artificial AI(AAI) or any other super-intelligent entity .

Artificial Intelligence will then compare what it has learned from the historical data and its own “programming”. The comparison will determine how to design new environments, new cities, and even new universes .

Imagine a world where you can travel back to ancient Egypt, without actually having to physically travel there. You will just have to program the AI, tell it your destination and it will be able to simulate it for you.

This is why I’m saying, “AI + VR is one of the most dangerous combinations in the entire universe “.

After an AI (no matter in what form) has learned how to manipulate time , it will then be able to develop new universes and even travel through these universes. These are all simulations. And these all simulations are created by the AI itself, however, they will look like reality in every way possible .

Okay…back to the real world.

The future does not exist yet, right?

Yes, that’s true. There is no such thing as ‘future’. What AI + VR will do is they will help us live in a possible future. The most likely one.

Don’t get me wrong, nobody can program the future. We can only describe it as a “continuous process of change”. This means that there are infinite possibilities of what the future might look like . But some futures are more likely than others. And it all depends on who is creating the future.

This brings us back to the main story. What AI + VR will do for us is they will create a possible future, based on whatever we have gathered from knowledge and data throughout time. So what? What does this destruction of time mean for us?

The destruction of time means that we won’t be able to tell apart between reality and imagination/simulation anymore.

The thing is that we won’t even know that our futures are based on historical data, and not on our imagination.

By doing things in the present moment, we are affecting the future – people often call this the causality principle . VR + AI combo can even change that .

The laws of nature and Virtual Reality

The biggest advantage of “Virtual” reality is that the laws of nature will not apply there. You can feel the opposite gravity or travel faster than the speed of light. You can manipulate time in a way that you want to.

This is why VR is one of the most powerful tools, which has not been created yet. Yes, Virtual Reality has not been created yet.

We are nowhere close to creating a fully realistic simulation of the world around us.

As said in a previous article, defeating the laws of nature inside Virtual reality and being able to live there simply means “ defeating nature “.

The step-by-step process – How AI and VR are going to help us achieve time travel

If you are still confused, let me put it most simply; simple at a subatomic level:

For this , we need a VR lens, a space in the physical world where we do all the VR things, the ability to get VR senses , and powerful AI that gathers trillions upon trillions of historical data and then uses that data to build a simulation of the future and an AI program, by using which the user gets an immersive experience of what is “possible”.

1) First, we need a VR lens that is nothing similar to current VR boxes so that we are immersed in the VR world.

What this means is that we need a 3D VR display; not a normal 2D monitor sitting on your desk. It will virtualize the entire reality around us.

That’s the reason why we need no physical objects to hold in our hands; such as an Oculus Rift or a similar product. It would be like you are inside the videogame world…that’s all we could get from it.

But instead of playing video games, this would be making a “Virtual Reality” out of our current physical world.

2) Then we need a space in the physical world where we do all the VR things. Can I call the ‘space’ a time machine?

It’s too early to tell what this “time machine” will look like, but it is safe to assume that it will be a small space, just for our bodies to get adjusted.

3) Then we will need the ability to get VR senses. The senses will be able to perceive VR things as if they were real – just like our senses. AI chips will help us feel like everything is real.

We do not need any physical sensors or heads-up displays or anything like that. All of our senses would be virtualized and augmented in a way that we could just see and feel everything as if it was real – just like our physical senses work.

The sensory system works with each other, and now we are going to make it work with the world around us as well.

4) AI collects trillions upon trillions of historical data, microscopically analyzes it, and then uses that data to build a simulation of the future.

This is the final stage, when we have all the necessary ingredients in place, AI will be able to program itself and create a simulation of the future world. Although it won’t be 100% accurate, AI will simulate the most probable future.

5) Using the AI program, the user gets an immersive experience of what is “possible”. That’s exactly what we are aiming for.

It’s not about “what is going to happen”, but rather “what’s highly possible”.

You would need really really high enough computational power. When I say really really high, I don’t mean an upgrade to our current computers. I mean a revolution, a complete change in the hardware architecture of the hardware.

You would feel like that was real, and when you kill someone, they could really die.

How scientific is my theory?

Is this theory scientific?

First of all, I would not say that this is “MY” theory . In the current age of the internet, nothing belongs to nobody. I thought that I was the first to realize it, but the fact is that this may or may not be something new. Lots of people have been talking about time travel for ages now.

The most famous is H G Wells’ 1895 book “ The Time Machine “, a science fiction novella, which is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel by using a vehicle or device to travel purposely and selectively forward or backward through time.

I have been following time traveling and other time-related theories since I was a kid. But when I became really interested in Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality, then this idea just came up naturally by itself.

My theory is based on time traveling because it is the most popular topic related to “time” and it matched my enthusiastic interest to do something different. So I tried to look at the issue of time from the opposite side.

I am not even saying that this is entirely true, there are just a lot of facts that support my theory; such as AI getting good enough, or Virtual Reality making an immersion realistic enough. It’s all about reaching that point, and we can’t explain any reality without imagination.

Final lines

Virtual reality and Artificial Intelligence are undoubtedly the things of the future. The present Amazon Alexa and Sophia are just unborn babies. At the same time, Oculus Rift and other “advanced” VR headsets are still inside the womb .

The future, as I said before, could hardly be predicted, not by the farthest level of AI. But the most likely future I can predict is the one where we surpass the natural laws with the combination of Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality.

Time Travel Simulation Resolves “Grandfather Paradox”

What would happen to you if you went back in time and killed your grandfather? A model using photons reveals that quantum mechanics can solve the quandary—and even foil quantum cryptography

On June 28, 2009, the world-famous physicist Stephen Hawking threw a party at the University of Cambridge, complete with balloons, hors d'oeuvres and iced champagne. Everyone was invited but no one showed up. Hawking had expected as much, because he only sent out invitations after his party had concluded. It was, he said, "a welcome reception for future time travelers," a tongue-in-cheek experiment to reinforce his 1992 conjecture that travel into the past is effectively impossible.

But Hawking may be on the wrong side of history. Recent experiments offer tentative support for time travel's feasibility—at least from a mathematical perspective. The study cuts to the core of our understanding of the universe, and the resolution of the possibility of time travel, far from being a topic worthy only of science fiction, would have profound implications for fundamental physics as well as for practical applications such as quantum cryptography and computing.

Closed timelike curves The source of time travel speculation lies in the fact that our best physical theories seem to contain no prohibitions on traveling backward through time. The feat should be possible based on Einstein's theory of general relativity, which describes gravity as the warping of spacetime by energy and matter. An extremely powerful gravitational field, such as that produced by a spinning black hole, could in principle profoundly warp the fabric of existence so that spacetime bends back on itself. This would create a "closed timelike curve," or CTC, a loop that could be traversed to travel back in time.

Hawking and many other physicists find CTCs abhorrent, because any macroscopic object traveling through one would inevitably create paradoxes where cause and effect break down. In a model proposed by the theorist David Deutsch in 1991, however, the paradoxes created by CTCs could be avoided at the quantum scale because of the behavior of fundamental particles, which follow only the fuzzy rules of probability rather than strict determinism. "It's intriguing that you've got general relativity predicting these paradoxes, but then you consider them in quantum mechanical terms and the paradoxes go away," says University of Queensland physicist Tim Ralph. "It makes you wonder whether this is important in terms of formulating a theory that unifies general relativity with quantum mechanics."

Experimenting with a curve Recently Ralph and his PhD student Martin Ringbauer led a team that experimentally simulated Deutsch's model of CTCs for the very first time, testing and confirming many aspects of the two-decades-old theory. Their findings are published in Nature Communications. Much of their simulation revolved around investigating how Deutsch's model deals with the “grandfather paradox,” a hypothetical scenario in which someone uses a CTC to travel back through time to murder her own grandfather, thus preventing her own later birth. Deutsch's quantum solution to the grandfather paradox works something like this:

Instead of a human being traversing a CTC to kill her ancestor, imagine that a fundamental particle goes back in time to flip a switch on the particle-generating machine that created it. If the particle flips the switch, the machine emits a particle— the particle—back into the CTC; if the switch isn't flipped, the machine emits nothing. In this scenario there is no a priori deterministic certainty to the particle's emission, only a distribution of probabilities. Deutsch's insight was to postulate self-consistency in the quantum realm, to insist that any particle entering one end of a CTC must emerge at the other end with identical properties. Therefore, a particle emitted by the machine with a probability of one half would enter the CTC and come out the other end to flip the switch with a probability of one half, imbuing itself at birth with a probability of one half of going back to flip the switch. If the particle were a person, she would be born with a one-half probability of killing her grandfather, giving her grandfather a one-half probability of escaping death at her hands—good enough in probabilistic terms to close the causative loop and escape the paradox. Strange though it may be, this solution is in keeping with the known laws of quantum mechanics.

In their new simulation Ralph, Ringbauer and their colleagues studied Deutsch's model using interactions between pairs of polarized photons within a quantum system that they argue is mathematically equivalent to a single photon traversing a CTC. "We encode their polarization so that the second one acts as kind of a past incarnation of the first,” Ringbauer says. So instead of sending a person through a time loop, they created a stunt double of the person and ran him through a time-loop simulator to see if the doppelganger emerging from a CTC exactly resembled the original person as he was in that moment in the past.

By measuring the polarization states of the second photon after its interaction with the first, across multiple trials the team successfully demonstrated Deutsch's self-consistency in action. "The state we got at our output, the second photon at the simulated exit of the CTC, was the same as that of our input, the first encoded photon at the CTC entrance," Ralph says. "Of course, we're not really sending anything back in time but [the simulation] allows us to study weird evolutions normally not allowed in quantum mechanics."

Those "weird evolutions" enabled by a CTC, Ringbauer notes, would have remarkable practical applications, such as breaking quantum-based cryptography through the cloning of the quantum states of fundamental particles. "If you can clone quantum states,” he says, “you can violate the Heisenberg uncertainty principle,” which comes in handy in quantum cryptography because the principle forbids simultaneously accurate measurements of certain kinds of paired variables, such as position and momentum. "But if you clone that system, you can measure one quantity in the first and the other quantity in the second, allowing you to decrypt an encoded message."

"In the presence of CTCs, quantum mechanics allows one to perform very powerful information-processing tasks, much more than we believe classical or even normal quantum computers could do," says Todd Brun, a physicist at the University of Southern California who was not involved with the team's experiment. "If the Deutsch model is correct, then this experiment faithfully simulates what could be done with an actual CTC. But this experiment cannot test the Deutsch model itself; that could only be done with access to an actual CTC."

Alternative reasoning Deutsch's model isn’t the only one around, however. In 2009 Seth Lloyd, a theorist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, proposed an alternative , less radical model of CTCs that resolves the grandfather paradox using quantum teleportation and a technique called post-selection, rather than Deutsch's quantum self-consistency. With Canadian collaborators, Lloyd went on to perform successful laboratory simulations of his model in 2011. "Deutsch's theory has a weird effect of destroying correlations," Lloyd says. "That is, a time traveler who emerges from a Deutschian CTC enters a universe that has nothing to do with the one she exited in the future. By contrast, post-selected CTCs preserve correlations, so that the time traveler returns to the same universe that she remembers in the past."

This property of Lloyd's model would make CTCs much less powerful for information processing, although still far superior to what computers could achieve in typical regions of spacetime. "The classes of problems our CTCs could help solve are roughly equivalent to finding needles in haystacks," Lloyd says. "But a computer in a Deutschian CTC could solve why haystacks exist in the first place.”

Lloyd, though, readily admits the speculative nature of CTCs. “I have no idea which model is really right. Probably both of them are wrong,” he says. Of course, he adds, the other possibility is that Hawking is correct, “that CTCs simply don't and cannot exist." Time-travel party planners should save the champagne for themselves—their hoped-for future guests seem unlikely to arrive.

Is Time Travel Possible?

We all travel in time! We travel one year in time between birthdays, for example. And we are all traveling in time at approximately the same speed: 1 second per second.

NASA's space telescopes also give us a way to look back in time. Telescopes help us see stars and galaxies that are very far away . It takes a long time for the light from faraway galaxies to reach us. So, when we look into the sky with a telescope, we are seeing what those stars and galaxies looked like a very long time ago.

However, when we think of the phrase "time travel," we are usually thinking of traveling faster than 1 second per second. That kind of time travel sounds like something you'd only see in movies or science fiction books. Could it be real? Science says yes!

How do we know that time travel is possible?

More than 100 years ago, a famous scientist named Albert Einstein came up with an idea about how time works. He called it relativity. This theory says that time and space are linked together. Einstein also said our universe has a speed limit: nothing can travel faster than the speed of light (186,000 miles per second).

What does this mean for time travel? Well, according to this theory, the faster you travel, the slower you experience time. Scientists have done some experiments to show that this is true.

For example, there was an experiment that used two clocks set to the exact same time. One clock stayed on Earth, while the other flew in an airplane (going in the same direction Earth rotates).

After the airplane flew around the world, scientists compared the two clocks. The clock on the fast-moving airplane was slightly behind the clock on the ground. So, the clock on the airplane was traveling slightly slower in time than 1 second per second.

Can we use time travel in everyday life?

We can't use a time machine to travel hundreds of years into the past or future. That kind of time travel only happens in books and movies. But the math of time travel does affect the things we use every day.

For example, we use GPS satellites to help us figure out how to get to new places. (Check out our video about how GPS satellites work .) NASA scientists also use a high-accuracy version of GPS to keep track of where satellites are in space. But did you know that GPS relies on time-travel calculations to help you get around town?

GPS satellites orbit around Earth very quickly at about 8,700 miles (14,000 kilometers) per hour. This slows down GPS satellite clocks by a small fraction of a second (similar to the airplane example above).

However, the satellites are also orbiting Earth about 12,550 miles (20,200 km) above the surface. This actually speeds up GPS satellite clocks by a slighter larger fraction of a second.

Here's how: Einstein's theory also says that gravity curves space and time, causing the passage of time to slow down. High up where the satellites orbit, Earth's gravity is much weaker. This causes the clocks on GPS satellites to run faster than clocks on the ground.

The combined result is that the clocks on GPS satellites experience time at a rate slightly faster than 1 second per second. Luckily, scientists can use math to correct these differences in time.

If scientists didn't correct the GPS clocks, there would be big problems. GPS satellites wouldn't be able to correctly calculate their position or yours. The errors would add up to a few miles each day, which is a big deal. GPS maps might think your home is nowhere near where it actually is!

In Summary:

Yes, time travel is indeed a real thing. But it's not quite what you've probably seen in the movies. Under certain conditions, it is possible to experience time passing at a different rate than 1 second per second. And there are important reasons why we need to understand this real-world form of time travel.

In order to find the Nostradamus Key, time agents were provided with specially created cell phones. When a user finds an object of interest, by thinking of destroying it and taking a photo, and if the resulting image is that of a peaceful world, then the subject is the Nostradamus Key. Conversely, if the subject is not the Nostradamus Key, then the photo displays destruction. By using the phone, Maya and Fumiaki investigates occult occurrences as they occur in the town. However, by the time Yuusei and Jaden arrive, Paradox had already attacked his time, supposedly killing both Pegasus and Yuugi's grandpa, and had also managed to steal Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Red-Eyes Black Dragon. I n the 1990s and early 2000s, technologists made the world a grand promise: new communications technologies would strengthen democracy, undermine authoritarianism, and lead to a new era of human flourishing. But today, few people would agree that the internet has lived up to that lofty goal. 

Today, on social media platforms, content tends to be ranked by how much engagement it receives. Over the last two decades politics, the media, and culture have all been reshaped to meet a single, overriding incentive: posts that provoke an emotional response often rise to the top.

Efforts to improve the health of online spaces have long focused on content moderation, the practice of detecting and removing bad content. Tech companies hired workers and built AI to identify hate speech, incitement to violence, and harassment. That worked imperfectly, but it stopped the worst toxicity from flooding our feeds. 

There was one problem: while these AIs helped remove the bad, they didn’t elevate the good. “Do you see an internet that is working, where we are having conversations that are healthy or productive?” asks Yasmin Green, the CEO of Google’s Jigsaw unit, which was founded in 2010 with a remit to address threats to open societies. “No. You see an internet that is driving us further and further apart.”

What if there were another way? 

Jigsaw believes it has found one. On Monday, the Google subsidiary revealed a new set of AI tools , or classifiers, that can score posts based on the likelihood that they contain good content: Is a post nuanced? Does it contain evidence-based reasoning? Does it share a personal story, or foster human compassion? By returning a numerical score (from 0 to 1) representing the likelihood of a post containing each of those virtues and others, these new AI tools could allow the designers of online spaces to rank posts in a new way. Instead of posts that receive the most likes or comments rising to the top, platforms could—in an effort to foster a better community—choose to put the most nuanced comments, or the most compassionate ones, first.

The breakthrough was made possible by recent advances in large language models (LLMs), the type of AI that underpins chatbots like ChatGPT. In the past, even training an AI to detect simple forms of toxicity, like whether a post was racist, required millions of labeled examples. Those older forms of AI were often brittle and ineffectual, not to mention expensive to develop. But the new generation of LLMs can identify even complex linguistic concepts out of the box, and calibrating them to perform specific tasks is far cheaper than it used to be. Jigsaw’s new classifiers can identify “attributes” like whether a post contains a personal story, curiosity, nuance, compassion, reasoning, affinity, or respect. “It's starting to become feasible to talk about something like building a classifier for compassion, or curiosity, or nuance,” says Jonathan Stray, a senior scientist at the Berkeley Center for Human-Compatible AI. “These fuzzy, contextual, know-it-when-I-see-it kind of concepts— we're getting much better at detecting those.”

This new ability could be a watershed for the internet. Green, and a growing chorus of academics who study the effects of social media on public discourse, argue that content moderation is “necessary but not sufficient” to make the internet a better place. Finding a way to boost positive content, they say, could have cascading positive effects both at the personal level—our relationships with each other—but also at the scale of society. “By changing the way that content is ranked, if you can do it in a broad enough way, you might be able to change the media economics of the entire system,” says Stray, who did not work on the Jigsaw project. “If enough of the algorithmic distribution channels disfavored divisive rhetoric, it just wouldn’t be worth it to produce it any more.”

One morning in late March, Tin Acosta joins a video call from Jigsaw’s offices in New York City. On the conference room wall behind her, there is a large photograph from the 2003 Rose Revolution in Georgia, when peaceful protestors toppled the country’s Soviet-era government. Other rooms have similar photos of people in Syria, Iran, Cuba and North Korea “using tech and their voices to secure their freedom,” Jigsaw’s press officer, who is also in the room, tells me. The photos are intended as a reminder of Jigsaw’s mission to use technology as a force for good, and its duty to serve people in both democracies and repressive societies.

On her laptop, Acosta fires up a demonstration of Jigsaw’s new classifiers. Using a database of 380 comments from a recent Reddit thread, the Jigsaw senior product manager begins to demonstrate how ranking the posts using different classifiers would change the sorts of comments that rise to the top. The thread’s original poster had asked for life-affirming movie recommendations. Sorted by the default ranking on Reddit—posts that have received the most upvotes—the top comments are short, and contain little beyond the titles of popular movies. Then Acosta clicks a drop-down menu, and selects Jigsaw’s reasoning classifier. The posts reshuffle. Now, the top comments are more detailed. “You start to see people being really thoughtful about their responses,” Acosta says. “Here’s somebody talking about School of Rock— not just the content of the plot, but also the ways in which the movie has changed his life and made him fall in love with music.” (TIME agreed not to quote directly from the comments, which Jigsaw said were used for demonstrative purposes only and had not been used to train its AI models.) 

Acosta chooses another classifier, one of her favorites: whether a post contains a personal story. The top comment is now from a user describing how, under both a heavy blanket and the influence of drugs, they had ugly-cried so hard at Ke Huy Quan’s monologue in Everything Everywhere All at Once that they’d had to pause the movie multiple times. Another top comment describes how a movie trailer had inspired them to quit a job they were miserable with. Another tells the story of how a movie reminded them of their sister, who had died 10 years earlier. “This is a really great way to look through a conversation and understand it a little better than [ranking by] engagement or recency,” Acosta says.

For the classifiers to have an impact on the wider internet, they would require buy-in from the biggest tech companies, which are all locked in a zero-sum competition for our attention. Even though they were developed inside Google, the tech giant has no plans to start using them to help rank its YouTube comments, Green says. Instead, Jigsaw is making the tools freely available for independent developers, in the hopes that smaller online spaces, like message boards and newspaper comment sections, will build up an evidence base that the new forms of ranking are popular with users.

There are some reasons to be skeptical. For all its flaws, ranking by engagement is egalitarian. Popular posts get amplified regardless of their content, and in this way social media has allowed marginalized groups to gain a voice long denied to them by traditional media. Introducing AI into the mix could threaten this state of affairs. A wide body of research shows that LLMs have plenty of ingrained biases; if applied too hastily, Jigsaw’s classifiers might end up boosting voices that are already prominent online, thus further marginalizing those that aren’t. The classifiers could also exacerbate the problem of AI-generated content flooding the internet, by providing spammers with an easy recipe for AI-generated content that’s likely to get amplified. Even if Jigsaw evades those problems, tinkering with online speech has become a political minefield. Both conservatives and liberals are convinced their posts are being censored; meanwhile, tech companies are under fire for making unaccountable decisions that affect the global public square. Jigsaw argues that its new tools may allow tech platforms to rely less on the controversial practice of content moderation. But there’s no getting away from the fact that changing what kind of speech gets rewarded online will always have political opponents.

Still, academics say that given a chance, Jigsaw’s new AI tools could result in a paradigm shift for social media. Elevating more desirable forms of online speech could create new incentives for more positive online—and possibly offline—social norms. If a platform amplifies toxic comments, “then people get the signal they should do terrible things,” says Ravi Iyer, a technologist at the University of Southern California who helps run the nonprofit Psychology of Technology Research Network. “If the top comments are informative and useful, then people follow the norm and create more informative and useful comments.” 

The new algorithms have come a long way from Jigsaw’s earlier work. In 2017, the Google unit released Perspective API, an algorithm for detecting toxicity. The free tool was widely used, including by the New York Times, to downrank or remove negative comments under articles. But experimenting with the tool, which is still available online, reveals the ways that AI tools can carry hidden biases. “You’re a f-cking hypocrite” is, according to the classifier, 96% likely to be a toxic phrase. But many other hateful phrases, according to the tool, are likely to be non-toxic, including the neo-Nazi slogan “Jews will not replace us” (41%) and transphobic language like “trans women are men” (36%). The tool breaks when confronted with a slur that is commonly directed at South Asians in the U.K. and Canada, returning the error message: “We don't yet support that language, but we're working on it!”

To be sure, 2017 was a very different era for AI. Jigsaw has made efforts to mitigate biases in its new classifiers, which are unlikely to make such basic errors. Its team tested the new classifiers on a set of comments that were identical except for the names of different identity groups, and said it found no hint of bias. Still, the patchy effectiveness of the older Perspective API serves as a reminder of the pitfalls of relying on AI to make value judgments about language. Even today’s powerful LLMs are not free from bias, and their fluency can often conceal their limitations. They can discriminate against African American English; they function poorly in some non-English languages; and they can treat equally-capable job candidates differently based on their names alone . More work will be required to ensure Jigsaw’s new AIs don’t have less visible forms of bias. “Of course, there are things that you have to watch out for,” says Iyer, who did not work on the Jigsaw project. “How do we make sure that [each classifier] captures the diversity of ways that people express these concepts?”

In a paper published earlier this month, Acosta and her colleagues set out to test how readers would respond to a list of comments ranked using Jigsaw’s new classifiers, compared to comments sorted by recency. They found that readers preferred the comments sorted by the classifiers, finding them to be more informative, respectful, trustworthy, and interesting. But they also found that ranking comments by just one classifier on its own, like reasoning, could put users off. In its press release launching the classifiers on Monday, Jigsaw says it intends for its tools to be mixed and matched. That’s possible because all they do is return scores between zero and one—so it’s possible to write a formula that combines several scores together into a single number, and use that number as a ranking signal. Web developers could choose to rank comments using a carefully-calibrated mixture of compassion, respect, and curiosity, for example. They could also throw engagement into the mix as well – to make sure that posts that receive lots of likes still get boosted too.

Just as removing negative content from the internet has received its fair share of pushback, boosting certain forms of “desirable” content is likely to prompt complaints that tech companies are putting their thumbs on the political scales. Jigsaw is quick to point out that its classifiers are not only apolitical, but also propose to boost types of content that few people would take issue with. In tests, Jigsaw found the tools did not disproportionately boost comments that were seen by users as unfavorable to Republicans or Democrats. “We have a track record of delivering a product that’s useful for publishers across the political spectrum,” Green says. “The emphasis is on opening up conversations.” Still, the question of power remains: who gets to decide which kinds of content are desirable? Jigsaw’s hope is that by releasing the technology publicly, different online spaces can each choose what works for them—thus avoiding any one hegemonic platform taking that decision on behalf of the entire internet.

For Stray, the Berkeley scientist, there is a tantalizing prospect to an internet where positive content gets boosted. Many people, he says, think of online misinformation as leading to polarization. And it can. “But it also works the other way around,” he says. The demand for low-quality information arises, at least in part, because people are already polarized. If the tools result in people becoming less polarized, “then that should actually change the demand-side for certain types of lower quality content.” It’s hypothetical, he cautions, but it could lead to a virtuous circle, where declining demand for misinformation feeds a declining supply.

Why would platforms agree to implement these changes? Almost by definition, ranking by engagement is the most effective way to keep users onsite, thus keeping eyeballs on the ads that drive up revenue. For the big platforms, that means both the continued flow of profits, and the fact that users aren’t spending time with a competitor’s app. Replacing engagement-based ranking with something less engaging seems like a tough ask for companies already battling to keep their users’ attention.

That’s true, Stray says. But, he notes that there are different forms of engagement. There’s short-term engagement, which is easy for platforms to optimize for: is a tweak to a platform likely to make users spend more time scrolling during the next hour? Platforms can and do make changes to boost their short-term engagement, Stray says—but those kinds of changes often mean boosting low-quality, engagement-bait types of content, which tend to put users off in the long term. 

The alternative is long-term engagement. How might a change to a platform influence a user’s likelihood of spending more time scrolling during the next three months? Long-term engagement is healthier, but far harder to optimize for, because it’s harder to isolate the connection between cause and effect. Many different factors are acting upon the user at the same time. Large platforms want users to be returning over the long term, Stray says, and for them to cultivate healthy relationships with their products. But it’s difficult to measure, so optimizing for short-term engagement is often an easier choice.

Jigsaw’s new algorithms could change that calculus. “The hope is, if we get better at building products that people want to use in the long run, that will offset the race to the bottom,” Stray says. “At least somewhat.”

‘Self-driving labs.’ Scientists at PNNL explore how AI can help transform research

Scientific research takes time. Experimentation can be painstakingly slow. Innovation is often more incremental than immediate.

This all may be true, but given today’s most pressing challenges in science, energy and security, we no longer have the luxury of time. Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are exploring the frontiers of artificial intelligence, or AI, to quickly find solutions that can transform these fields.

Their use of AI to aid research will ultimately lead to “self-driving laboratories” and “autonomous experiments” that fully integrate artificial intelligence, robotics and digital technologies. For example, the planned Microbial Molecular Phenotyping Capability, an expansion to the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a DOE user facility at PNNL, will use AI to automate the entire experimentation process — from sample preparation to data analysis to guiding the next steps of an experiment. This revolutionary approach will give scientists new ways to rapidly enable biotechnological advances, such as more economical and efficient production of fuels, chemicals and materials.

In one significant step toward self-driving laboratories, researchers at PNNL are incorporating a breakthrough in electron microscopy that uses an AI approach known as deep learning to accelerate advances in materials science. Using complex algorithms, they can train a model to find patterns of interest in the high volume of data collected by these instruments — making it possible to speed the development of new materials for more efficient catalysts and longer-lasting batteries.

While researchers have been applying some of these methods to electron microscopy at PNNL for about a decade, they still required human engagement and were labor intensive.

For instance, scientists studying radiation damage to materials used in nuclear reactors or spacecraft typically begin by manually tracing regions of interest on the images captured by the electron microscope. They then hand-label these datasets and use them to train a model to identify similar areas in other images. Besides being time-consuming, human labeling can lead to errors, especially as people review images of the same sample captured by the microscope’s different lenses.

But now, researchers have built upon a PNNL-developed platform that merges features in electron microscopy images, visualizes data in real time and identifies areas of potential interest automatically. It can do in about an hour what previously took researchers upward of 100 hours — and can now identify patterns in materials without human intervention.

These image classification tools offer such value to the research community that PNNL is working with a leading research instrument supplier to incorporate them into their commercial products.

In our labs, researchers already are applying this technique to improve understanding of damage to materials in high radiation environments. While there is no shortage of data, the missing link has been the ability to interpret it in a way that elucidates the degradation process, shows what is happening at material interfaces and informs how to engineer new, better-performing materials.

With the help of the deep learning model, the electron microscope image is accurately parsed into small sections that are sorted into groups based on similarity — even when they are not physically next to each other in the actual material. These different groups are then color coded to represent different levels of radiation damage, providing new insights without the researcher having to tell the model what to look for.

Beyond this work with microscopes, PNNL has much greater aspirations for the power of AI to transform research and innovation. Through our partnership with Microsoft, we will use high-performance computing, cloud computing and artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific discovery in chemistry and materials science. Our journey toward delivering results in hours or days that would have previously taken months or years has just begun, but the prospects are exciting — and the world can’t wait for the results!

Expedia and KAYAK Launch ChatGPT Plug-Ins

For instance, several travel sites, including Expedia and KAYAK, have launched ChatGPT plug-ins recently. Users can get recommendations on places to go, where to stay, how to get around, and what to see and do based on the chat.

“You’ll find AI embedded in most of the best-known travel booking engines today, so you might be using AI to help plan your trip without even realizing it,” said Brian Prince, founder and CEO of TopAITools.com .

For instance, Expedia uses a ChatGPT plug-in on the homepage of the app to provide travel recommendations. It will save hotels and attractions mentioned in the conversation to a trip, which you can then book in the app. Using one platform for research and booking helps streamline travel planning and save time.

And two-thirds — 64% of travelers — said they expect to use AI to research or plan travel in the future, or have already done so, according to a Matador Network survey. In addition, 16% said they had already used AI to help plan their travel — and a majority of those respondents said they used AI tools to save time planning (60%) and to find activities or attractions they wouldn’t have known about (70%).

“Budgeting is a huge part of travel. Very few people can move around the globe as if money was no object,” said Ross Borden, CEO of travel publisher Matador Network .

Matador Network also recently launched GuideGeek , a free OpenAI-powered travel assistant with budgeting in mind, said Borden.

Staying Within Your Travel Budget

According to Borden, GuideGeek can be completely customizable to the request of the user. For example, you can make an itinerary of any length and matching any budget for any location in the world.

“How often have you been looking at a hotel online that’s in your budget, but there’s an ad for another hotel that looks way better but costs twice as much?” asked Borden.

ChatGPT itself can offer basic money-saving tips for travel, even with a pretty simple prompt like, “What are some of the best tips to save money on travel?” said Prince.

Yet, Prince noted that when it comes to ChatGPT prompts, the more specific and detailed you can be, the better the output.

For instance, when Prince used the prompt, “I’m planning a trip to Paris in April. Can you tell me some tips to save money on food and tourist attractions?” ChatGPT offered specific and tangible advice, including a list of free attractions.

“I didn’t know you could get into the Louvre free after 6pm on the first Friday of every month (except in July and August)! Always make sure to fact-check the information from ChatGPT, as it may not be up-to-date or accurate,” he added.

Prince said he asked ChatGPT for ways to save money on checked baggage fees with Delta, “and it gave me some solid advice.”

Finding Flight Deals

AI travel tools can also help finding not only the cheapest flights, but flights with other options.

“We see a lot of users booking flights on GuideGeek because rather than a somewhat overwhelming array of flight options no sane person would take, if you put in your dates and destinations, GuideGeek immediately searches all available flights and provides three options: best, fastest and cheapest,” said Borden.

Prince added that Google Flights now uses AI to predict when you can get the best prices on tickets.

“Google Gemini integrates with Google Flights to access data, so you can plan your trip in Gemini and then book it easily, knowing you’re getting the best prices,” he said.

Brainstorming for Budget Travel

Using AI to get ideas and inspiration for your next trip is a great way to break out of your typical habits in booking destinations of which you’re already aware, said Borden.

“AI presents a more proactive option for travelers to find new destinations that fit within their budget, as opposed to scrolling on Instagram and hoping that the cool beach you just saw has somewhere affordable to stay nearby,” he said.

Asking for Cost-Saving Strategies

For instance, as you plan your trip, you can message back and forth with GuideGeek at no cost on Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram.

“While lists of free activities exist online for a lot of destinations, using AI can help create a custom list generated around what you’re looking for. It would take quite a bit of time to research the same highly specific set of info on Google,” said Borden.

You already know what the Air Jordan 1 is all about. It’s a staple of sneaker culture.

The Air Jordan 1, however, wasn’t destined to be an all-time classic.

When it first debuted in 1985, there weren’t grand expectations. Instead, there were critics loudly chirping about Nike’s decision to give Michael Jordan a large sneaker deal before he played a single game and the rookie’s choice to sign with a company that, up to that point, was best known for running shoes.

Jordan quickly flipped the narrative on the court by winning Rookie of the Year, averaging 28.2 PPG, 6.5 RPG, and 5.9 APG in 1985 while donning Air Jordan 1s. MJ’s meteoric rise propelled the Air Jordan 1, resulting in nationwide demand and making the sneakers a must-have for hoop heads.

The AJ1 "Chicago" was inspired by the high top Air Jordan 1 original colorway, first released in 1985. The shoe harkens back to a time when shoe boxes were often lost in inventory stockrooms, only to be found again years later.

Before the advent of sophisticated inventory systems, products were typically tracked with pen and paper. Human error was inevitable and frequently resulted in shoe boxes with mismatched lids.

The AJ1 Chicago is a throwback to this era, drawing inspiration from what an original 1985 Air Jordan 1 would look like if found decades later in a dusty stock room.

According to the Jordan design team, the goal of this shoe was to create a “time travel moment,” especially for a new generation of consumers. The process of buying a shoe today is very different from what it was like in the 80s. This sneaker attempts to capture that lost and found feeling, giving consumers a taste of what a box-fresh, vintage AJ1 would have looked like back in the day.

The Jordan Brand team responsible for developing the AJ1 Chicago obsessed every detail of the shoe’s design to bring this nostalgic story to life. Jordan designers studied multiple pairs of original AJ1s in varying states of distress to capture the nuances of the shoe’s look, described as having “light to no wear but with materials that sat for years in a box and didn’t withstand the test of time.”

The Inspiration

Ultimately, the team focused on several key design elements of the Chicago to drive forward the AJ1’s history. The image below shows the updated 2022 Chicago (top) next to an original 1985 Air Jordan 1 (bottom) to highlight the sneaker's inspiration.

Ankle Collars

One of the most common signs of age on an original pair of AJ1s was a cracked and faded ankle collar. The black leather material wrapped around the ankle collars had a tendency to dry out and crack over a period of time, and often would begin to flake off with wear and handling.

The ankle collars on the new Chicago mimic this weathered appearance and give a nod to collectors who understand the amount of care necessary when handling a pair of 1985 originals.

Similar to the ankle collars, the rubber cupsole of an original AJ1 would age over time, turning into a light yellow hue. The Chicago pays homage to this look.

According to the Jordan Brand Design team, when shoes are left in a box for years and not properly maintained, they’re going to crack, yellow and pigment. The goal with the AJ1 Chicago was to hint at this subtle aging look, while adding tactility to the shoe’s sole.

Aged Leather

Leather is a natural material that requires ongoing maintenance. With years of neglect in a stockroom leather starts to dry out and leave visible signs of aging. The Chicago offers hints of dryness in the leather, most noticeably in the toe area and side panels. But the effect is merely aesthetic.

Jordan Brand designers took note of the condition in the leather from several older pairs of AJ1s. Observing how some of the oils in the leather came to the surface and created different visible effects, they recreated a rich look using premium materials that will last longer for today’s consumers.

OG Box & Lid

In a nod to the “lost and found” nature of the colorway, the updated Chicago comes with a mismatched box lid that speaks to the shoes being misplaced in back rooms and basements.

Designers added extra details both inside and outside the box that serve as a shout out to shoe promotions created once upon a time. According to the Jordan design team, every detail should be recognizable to those who grew up back in those days, while giving new sneakerheads a chance to experience what it was like.

One such example is the inclusion with every pair of a vintage receipt meant to replicate actual receipts that found their way into the hands of collectors from deadstock shoeboxes. The receipt calls up images of how sneakers used to be acquired in analog fashion before the internet age.

Retelling the Story

As a result of the many unique design choices, not every pair of updated AJ1s will look exactly the same. The subtle differences in each sneaker reinforce the throwback theme of this colorway.

Jordan designers took an approach that gave the 2022 Air Jordan 1 Chicago “an edge, a narrative and a connection.” They wanted a look and feel that came with a history tied back to something many consumers may not even be aware of. Ultimately, whether old school or new generation, Jordan Brand wants every consumer to see beauty in the story behind the shoe.

The sneaker dropped on November 19, 2022. The Chicago will be available in full family sizing.
