Hand and finger hearts: Tom Cruise gives ultimate fan service for ‘Top Gun’ South Korea premiere

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Hollywood star Tom Cruise gave South Koreans the ultimate fan service, including lots of finger hearts and heartfelt words, while visiting the country to promote his newest film, “ Top Gun : Maverick.”

During a press conference at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul on June 20, Cruise expressed his love for South Korea in what marked his 10th official visit to the country. His last was four years ago to promote “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” in 2018.

Throughout his trip, Cruise made finger hearts, face hearts and hand hearts along with the other members of the cast, pleasing Korean fans.

“It’s such a beautiful culture, and it’s such a privilege to be here,” he said.

The star also emphasized that he had spent long hours in hotel rooms thinking of what the sequel could be about after fans from “every country” he would visit, would “ask for the sequel.”

“There was a tremendous amount of pressure,” said Cruise, alluding to the three decades it took to release a “Top Gun” sequel since the first film premiered in 1986.

Korea was the final leg of the tour for the movie’s cast and crew, including producer Jerry Bruckheimer and fellow actors Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jay Ellis and Greg Tarzan Davis, all of whom were also present at the conference.

The Korean press also gifted the cast with a recreation of the aviation bomber jackets from the film in the style of royal Korean robes.

“So beautiful,” replied a grateful Cruise with a hand to his heart when asked whether he liked it.

It’s stunning. It’s absolutely beautiful. — Tom Cruise

A  gonryongpo is a traditional attire worn by royal kings of the ancient Korean dynasties, though the design of this  hanbok is rather familiar to international fans as well, thanks to historic K-Dramas.

The cast tried on their gifts—the filmmaker in red, Tom Cruise in blue, and the co-stars in white—and even posed in what Miles Teller called a  “K-Pop idol”  pose.

Miles Teller : We’re the newest K-Pop band. Park Kyung Lim (Host): You’re now looking at their K-Pop “ending pose.” Park Kyung Lim : TeamTopGun, everyone!

Seeing the gifts, Koreans praised the event organizers for putting together something so unique and thoughtful…

  • “They look great. Those are such thoughtful gifts.”
  • “Wow, no wonder these are movie stars. They pull off those bombers like models.”

  • “[Jay Ellis] looks really good in the white jacket.”
  • “What a great idea!”
  • “The jackets are gorgeous and the stars are too cute.”
  • “Nice.”
  • “OMG, I always thought these jackets are cute. I did not expect to see them wearing it though.”

‘Top Gun’ Tom Cruise tells long-waiting Korean fans: ‘It’s OK to cry’

Tom Cruise

Hollywood star Tom Cruise on Monday said he hopes long-waiting Korean fans of “Top Gun” who watched the action film as kids back in 1986 will fully enjoy the new sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick.”

“Grown-up man, you can enjoy that film, and you can cry in that movie, and that‘s OK. It’s for you and it’s for everybody, so enjoy,” Cruise said during a press conference held at Lotte Hotel in Seoul on Monday.

Along with Cruise, four of the stars of “Top Gun: Maverick” — Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jay Ellis and Greg Tarzan Davis – as well as the film’s producer Jerry Bruckheimer participated in the press conference.

The new movie is directed by Joseph Kosinski, whose “Spiderhead” was also released earlier this month on Netflix. Cruise reprises his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who is now a captain in the United States Navy.

During the conference, Cruise said that he felts a lot of pressure returning with the “Top Gun” franchise after more than three decades.

“Every country I would go to, they would ask for the sequel. Jerry (Bruckheimer) and I’ve been talking about it for many years. There was a tremendous amount of pressure,” he said.

The Hollywood star said he spent many hours in hotel rooms thinking of ideas to make the sequel for fans of the original film. He explained that the goal was to make fans feel that the two films have the same world, characters and emotional tones.

“Jerry and I, we agreed that we are not going to stop until we get it right,” he said. “I don’t ever want to disappoint fans.”

Since this is the American actor’s 10th visit to Korea, he emphasized that it is special, especially after going through the difficult time of the pandemic.

His first visit came in 1994 with promotions for “Interview With the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles,” and he most recently visited Korea four years ago to promote “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” in 2018.

“It’s a privilege to be here. I am so happy to see everyone, I missed you all, and as I said earlier I’m going to come back next summer, and next summer,” Cruise said. “It was important to all of us that we are able to come here in person and to have that communal experience of watching the movie in a theater together. It was actually beautiful after the time that we’ve been through and very special, so thank you for your warm welcome.”

Cruise talked further about the red carpet and the Korean premiere that was held in Lotte World Tower in Seoul the day before.

“It’s just been four years since I’ve been here and I could feel the energy. We all could. I think we are all connecting again. So it had an added level of joy that I felt,” Cruise said. “I’ve seen people there that were in every single premiere that I’ve done in Korea. It’s just a beautiful thing. It really is amazing, so it was magical. The whole evening it was just a great time. We all had a lot of fun together.”

Tom Cruise Flexes Biceps As He Meets Fans In South Korea While Promoting ‘Top Gun: Maverick’: Photos

Tom showed off his good looks and muscular physique as he greeted his adoring fans with his megawatt smile.

tom cruise south korea

Tom Cruise is still riding sky high after his Top Gun: Maverick became a box-office smash when it kicked off the summer movie season with some ’80s throwback panache. The movie star, who will be turning 60 in two weeks, was spotted greeting his adoring fans in South Korea during a promotional tour for the action sequel on Friday, June 17. Flashing his megawatt smile and flexing his bulging biceps, Tom rocked a tight polo shirt, jeans and a set of designer shades for the event.

Tom Cruise

The scene was quite reminiscent of Tom’s recent trip to South Africa , where he was all smiles as he applauded a group of locals who were singing the theme song to 1986’s  Top Gun . Tom was in the country to continue filming the  latest  Mission Impossible . Per usual, Tom was handling his own stunts, as he has done so on past productions, including Mission: Impossible 7 , which is scheduled to be released in 2022 and stars his rumored  now ex-girlfriend  Hayley Atwell ,   Rebecca Ferguson  and  Vanessa Kirby .

However, the eighth chapter in the series, scheduled for a July 22, 2023 release, had Tom taking his stunt performing one step further by investing in flying lessons to deftly handle a Boeing Stearman plane for some action scenes. At the time, Tom gave a sneak peek into how all the action unfolds, as he was spotted on the ground in a jumpsuit and helmet. Surrounded by the production crew, the actor was placed in a harness, which was secured to the wing of the Boeing Stearman biplane with a series of metal rods.  Movie-making magic  at its finest!

Tom Cruise

Meanwhile, Tom recently  made a rare public appearance  with his son   Connor , 26, at a baseball game in San Francisco. He shares Connor with ex-wife  Nicole Kidman,  whom he was married to from 1990 and 2001. The former couple also share daughter  Isabella , 28. Tom also shares daughter  Suri , 15, with ex  Katie Holmes.  The two split in 2016 after six years of marriage.

Tom Cruise Turns Photographer for 'Mission Impossible' Costars: 'The Moment vs The Photo'

The Hollywood star stepped behind the lens to photograph Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff and Vanessa Kirby at the Seoul premiere of 'Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One'

Hayley Atwell/Instagram

Tom Cruise is stepping behind the lens for a new mission — capturing images of his beautiful co-stars!

The Hollywood legend delighted fans at the premiere of his new movie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , in Seoul, South Korea on Thursday when he briefly commandeered a photographer’s camera to take a snap of his co-stars in the movie — Hayley Atwell , Pom Klementieff and Vanessa Kirby .

“This guy loves to give his leading ladies the spotlight 🌟” Atwell captioned a video of the moment she shared on Instagram Friday.

In the clip, a dapper-looking Cruise is handed a camera as he stands among a group of photographers at the event. Text over the screen reads “The Moment Vs The Photo,” as the actor familiarizes himself with the camera’s settings.

The 60-year-old actor and producer then crouches down to capture the three women posing in their gowns on a stage above the event's red carpet.

Determined to get the right angle, Cruise leans down to his right to ensure he's nailed the perfect shot. An image of the photograph then appears in the clip.

“How does it look,” a voice asks Cruise as he walks away.

“Good,” the actor replies with a smile.

It's been a week of championing fellow stars for Cruise, who took a break from his action-packed schedule promoting his latest Mission Impossible movie — which is released in theaters next month — to tweet about some summer movies he's looking forward to watching himself.

“This summer is full of amazing movies to see in theaters,” the actor  wrote on Wednesday, alongside photos  of himself and his  Dead Reckoning director  Christopher McQuarrie  in front of each of the films' respective posters.

Never miss a story — sign up for  PEOPLE's free daily newsletter  to stay up to date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Among the films he praised were  Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny ,  the long-awaited sequel starring  Harrison Ford  as the legendary adventurer (out Friday), the atomic-bomb biographical thriller  Oppenheimer  starring  Cillian Murphy  as J. Robert Oppenheimer and  Barbie  with  Margot Robbie . The latter two films will be released on the same day: July 21.

"Congratulations, Harrison Ford, on 40 years of Indy and one of the most iconic characters in history," added Cruise. "I love a double feature, and it doesn't get more explosive  (or more pink)  than one with  Oppenheimer  and Barbie.”

Cruise also recently praised how people of different cultures "join together to enjoy cinema" at the Dead Reckoning  in Rome.

"It’s something that I grew up with, that made me and inspired me to dream and want to travel the world," Cruise said, reported Variety . “My  goal since I was little was to make movies  and travel. And not just be a tourist, but work in that world and understand their culture."

"Through my movies, I’ve been able to have that because everyone here has allowed me to entertain them. It’s a privilege that I have never taken for granted," he continued in his speech, highlighting the importance of seeing movies in theaters. "It’s my passion to entertain you, and I will always fight for big theaters and that kind of experience for everyone.”

New on Netflix in May 2024 — all the new shows and movies to watch

I t’s almost the start of a new month, so it's time to take a look at all the new movies and TV shows set to arrive on Netflix in May 2024.

The biggest new edition is the return of the romantic period drama “Bridgerton." The hugely popular Netflix original series is back with the first part of its third season on May 16, and will no doubt lead to us all speaking with a posh English accent for days after bingeing. Other top TV show picks this month include true crime-inspired thriller “Bodkin” and new episodes of the glossy reality show “Selling the OC.”

If you’re in the mood for a movie, Netflix has plenty to offer. There’s a rom-com pairing Brooke Shields with Miranda Cosgrove as a mother-daughter duo, and “Unfrosted” which is a ridiculous-looking spoof from Jerry Seinfeld about the creation of the humble Pop-Tart — yes, this is a real movie debuting on the streaming service this month and not an out-of-season April Fools joke.

It’s set to be a busy month for new arrivals on Netflix and to make sure you don’t miss anything we’ve got a full guide below. There’s also a list of what’s leaving in May so you have a final chance to watch before they’re gone for good (or at least, gone for now).

New on Netflix in May 2024: Top picks

'a man in full'.

Based on the best-selling novel by Tom Wolfe, “A Man in Full” sees Jeff Daniels play a real estate mogul named Charlie Croker who faces sudden bankruptcy and must defend his crumbling empire from politicians and businessmen looking to capitalize now they smell blood in the water. Croker is a crude and rude tycoon who doesn’t plan to fall from grace without a fight and is ready to deploy every dirty trick to protect what he has built. The limited series will also star Diane Lane, Lucy Liu, Tom Pelphrey and William Jackson Harper. This six-episode drama comes from Dave E. Kelley who also created “Big Little Lies” for HBO and “The Lincoln Lawyer“ for Netflix.

Stream on Netflix from May 2

'Selling the OC' season 3

“Selling the OC” is back for its third season with the agents of The Oppenheim Group’s Orange County office ready to compete for the top listing in the cut-throat world of luxury real estate all over again. Of course, these brokers won’t just be attempting to sell multi-million dollar houses in sun-soaked California, expect more office drama as these workers definitely don’t leave their personal lives at the door. This spin-off from “Selling Sunset” has become just as popular as its parent series, and the return of “Selling the OC” is sure to be the month’s highlight for many Netflix subscribers. If you want even more reality TV set in the world of real estate, be sure to check out “Buying London” which is also set to land on Netflix in May (date TBC).

Stream on Netflix from May 3

'Unfrosted'

When I first heard about “Unfrosted,” I assumed it was a gag rather than a real movie, but nope, this comedy about the race to win the breakfast war between Kellogg’s and Post in the 1960s is totally legit. Directed, co-written by and starring Jerry Seinfeld, “Unfrosted” is a hilarious spoof of movies like “Blackberry” and “Air”. It chronicles the creation of the Pop-Tart, a "revolutionary" toaster pastry that is still enjoyed by families across the world to this day. Seinfeld has assembled a comedy super cast for this ridiculously silly flick with plenty of very funny people joining him including Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Hugh Grant, Peter Dinklage, Bill Burr, Dan Levy, James Marsden and Max Greenfield.

Stream on Netflix from May 3

'Bodkin'

Inspired by our society's current true crime obsession, but based on an original idea rather than a true story, “Bodkin” sees a group of podcasters travel to a seemingly idyllic town in the gorgeous Irish countryside to investigate a string of strange disappearances that occurred decades previously. Once the true crime investigators arrive on the scene they quickly realize there’s something more sinister hiding beneath the surface and are drawn into a twisting mystery. A dark thriller, with comedic elements (Though creator Jez Scharf is keen to stress it’s “not a comedy”), Bodkin stars Will Forte, Siobhán Cullen, and Robyn Cara.

Stream on Netflix from May 9

'Mother of the Bride'

From Mark Waters, the director of “Mean Girls” and “Freaky Friday”, comes a new romantic comedy starring Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove alongside Benjamin Bratt and Chad Michael Murray. In this glossy flick, Lana (Shields) is stunned when her daughter Emma (Cosgrove) returns from a trip aboard with the news she’s getting married, in Thailand, in a month. If the shock engagement wasn’t enough to process, Lana is even more blind-sighted when she learns that Emma’s fiancé is the son of the man who broke her heart years earlier. Traveling to the destination wedding, what follows is several awkward encounters and maybe even a second chance at finding love. “Mother of the Bride” looks very cliché but also great fun.

‘Bridgerton’ season 3 (part 1)

For fans of Netflix’s hugely popular period drama, the wait is almost over, it’s time to break out your best fine China afternoon tea set as “Bridgerton” is (nearly) back after a hiatus of more than two years. “Bridgerton” season 3 will be released in two parts, with the first four episodes arriving in May, and the second half of the third season dropping in June. There will be plenty of juicy drama this season encompassing the entire cast but the big focus will be on Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgeton (Luke Newtown), and there’s more than friendship brewing between this wallflower and the dashing world traveler. If you’ve yet to sample the delights of “Bridgerton” now is a good time to get caught up before May 16.

Stream on Netflix from May 16

Move over “Rebel Moon” there’s a new blockbuster science-fiction epic in town and it’s called “Atlas”. This action movie stars Jennifer Lopez as Atlas Shepherd, a brilliant but unsociable data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence. She signs up to join a mission to the stars to capture a rebellious robot that is linked to her mysterious past. But when the mission takes a turn, Atlas is forced to trust AI to help her save all of humanity. Expect a fast-paced plot, and some timely themes, as well as a satisfying message about the importance of trusting others and letting your guard down. I'm not totally sold yet but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that “Atlas” is a little better received by critics than Zack Snyder’s aforementioned sci-fi flop.
