Fraser's Hill ( Bukit Fraser ) is a colonial-era hill station in Pahang state, Peninsular Malaysia . Fraser's Hill has a wonderfully weird mixed-up character, where locals eat curries off banana leaves in an English cottage next to a golf course while the call to prayer sounds from the mosque.

Understand [ edit ]

Fraser's Hill is named after Louis James Fraser, a Scotsman who prospected for gold in Australia but eventually struck tin here instead in the 1890s. Employing Chinese miners to do the hard work for him and earning his keep by operating mule trains down the mountain, Fraser set up opium and gambling dens to increase his profits, which may have had something to do with his subsequent mysterious disappearance. The tin ran out in 1913, but the lush valley within was rediscovered as a colonial hill resort that, thanks to its 1524-m elevation, enjoys considerably cooler temperatures than Kuala Lumpur . By 1922 a road had been cut through the mountains to the valley, which soon sprouted bungalows and even one of Malaya's first golf courses.

Orientation [ edit ]

Orienting yourself in Fraser's Hill is easy enough: the entrance via the Gap is at the southwest corner of the valley and the "center" as such is at the intersection of Jalan Genting and Jalan Lady Guillemard, with the much-photographed clock tower marking the spot. Most restaurants and shops are clustered here, while the golf course takes up the bottom of the valley and bungalows and swanky residences dot the hills all around.

Get in [ edit ]

Map

Public transport on the Hill is non-existent (the bus from Kuala Kubu Bharu no longer runs) and you'll have to arrange your own wheels in some form or another.

By road [ edit ]

Fraser's Hill is 105 km north of Kuala Lumpur , around 2 hours by car. All downward traffic uses the new road, while the old Gap road is designated for upward traffic.

For road conditions from Kuala Kubu Bahru (KKB) or Raub to Fraser's Hill, contact the police station in Fraser's Hill at ☏ +60 9 3622222 .

By train [ edit ]

The KTM Komuter's northern run from Kuala Lumpur now reaches Kuala Kubu Baru, although you'll need to switch trains in Rawang (platform 2 for trains to KKB). From Kuala Kubu Baru, you can hire a taxi or local driver for the going rate of RM80 one way. Arrange to have your driver pick you up when you want to return, as getting a taxi back otherwise will be tough.

By taxi [ edit ]

Apart from your own car, the easiest way is by using taxi from Kuala Lumpur. Normal KL taxis can't do the trip, but you can arrange one from the Puduraya bus station, or call up Selangor Radio Taxi ( ☏ +60 3-2936213 ) or Comfort Taxi ( ☏ +60 3-7330495 ). You can expect to be quoted around RM200 for a one-way transfer, but this can be negotiated down, even more so for a return trip.

Get around [ edit ]

tourism pahang bukit fraser

For getting around Fraser's Hill, your own car is the best option. However, there is no petrol station up in Fraser's Hill so remember to fill your tank before going uphill. Should you get caught without sufficient petrol in Fraser's Hill, ask the locals and they may sell some petrol to you in 1-litre bottles.

Most distances are, however, walkable if you're not in hurry and don't mind going up/downhill or taking the trails through the jungle.

See [ edit ]

Fraser's Hill is famed worldwide as a birdwatching destination, with over 250 species recorded. Winners during the annual Bird Race have spotted as many as 70 species within 24 hours!

  • 3.712175 101.734732 1 Clock Tower . The central point of Fraser's Hill, this exceedingly British-looking little stone building covered with creeper vines is the most popular place to get your picture taken. The clock tower was designed by Malaysian Landscape Architect Z. Jaal and built by the Frasers Hill Development Corporation in 1989. ( updated Aug 2020 )
  • Jeriau Waterfalls , 5 km (3.1 mi) (30-min drive) from the town centre and then a 15-min walk. The falls are 6 m high and fall into a shallow pool suitable for bathing. The area is equipped with restrooms and shelters for picnics.

Do [ edit ]

tourism pahang bukit fraser

The top activities in Fraser's Hill are hiking , golf and birdwatching .

Birdwatching [ edit ]

One of the most popular activities in Fraser's Hill is bird watching given the many different species of birds in the locality, particularly in June when the International Bird Race event is held here due to many migratory species passing through.

Hiking [ edit ]

There are eight signposted trails around Fraser's Hill, although some have been closed at least temporarily after a well-publicized incident in 2005 when three young boys were lost in the jungle. Watch out for leeches.

  • Hemmant Trail . An easy 20-minute trail along the north side of the golf course.
  • Bishop's Trail . Effectively a continuation of the Hemmant Trail, this is a slightly more challenging half-hour track through the jungle. Slippery when wet.
  • Pine Tree Trail . A challenging 6-km trail up and down hills to the eponymous Pine Tree Hill, and you'll have to return the way you came to boot. This is a full-day hike that will take 7-8 hours at a moderate pace.

Golf [ edit ]

  • Fraser's Hill Golf Club . (All day 9-hole walking course) A short but very tight course. Open daily 8AM-7PM, green fees RM30/40 weekdays/weekends (whole day). Carry fee RM10. Golf sets available for rent at the Sports Complex.

Tennis [ edit ]

With such a delightful climate, Fraser's Hill ought to be perfect for tennis, but the courts have been neglected. Pines Resorts and SilverPark have courts, but they have fallen into disrepair. There are two public courts on the Pines Road (next to the Pahang Instana), but they are barely playable. The courts are filthy, so be prepared to discard your balls after a few plays (they turn from yellow to black).

Buy [ edit ]

tourism pahang bukit fraser

While you can get your fill of Fraser's Hill T-shirts and fridge magnets from the souvenir shops around the clock tower, the most useful local fashion accessory in these parts is a pair of leech socks . Baggy stockings of unbleached cotton worn over your pants, these not only prevent unwanted blood transfusions, but also double as handy Christmas decorations if you paint on a reindeer or two.

  • Kraftangan & Cenderamata Bukit Fraser , a souvenir shop at the Sports Complex. T-shirts (RM19.90 to 35.90), fridge magnets, accessories (3 for RM10), and local souvenirs. Open on weekends/holidays only.

Eat [ edit ]

  • 3.71451 101.73165 1 Arzed Cafe , 2, Jalan High Pines ( Food Garden ). Rotis, local ala carte, ice creams, smoothies. RM 4.50 - RM 6.50 . ( updated Aug 2020 )
  • 3.714597 101.731754 2 Food Garden , Jalan Genting ( just south of the mosque, uphill from clock tower ). This is actually just a small cluster of hawker stalls serving up cheap and tasty, if somewhat flyblown, local food. Most meals under RM5, but prices may add up if you order off the menu. ( updated Aug 2020 )
  • 3.718526 101.725686 3 Hillview Restaurant , Puncak Inn 1, Jalan Genting ( Food Garden in a food court near the playground. From Puncak Inn, drive all the way straight till you see a roundabout, take a left turn. The restaurant is directly on your left ), ☏ +6093622231 . serves Chinese and Western food. Tasty and relatively good value; Chinese meal for four at RM60. Serves excellent hot soup which is perfect for such cold weather. ( updated Aug 2020 )
  • Smokehouse Restaurant ( inside Smokehouse hotel ). An expensive place for a western food but well worth a visit. A ribeye steak costs about RM55. There is a corkage charge of RM40 if you decide to BYO. ( updated Aug 2020 )

Drink [ edit ]

tourism pahang bukit fraser

Nightlife in Fraser's Hill is basically nonexistent, but the Smokehouse can serve you a pint of Guinness.

Sleep [ edit ]

Most visitors come during the weekend, so it's not unusual for rates to be discounted as much as 50% on weekdays.

Mid-range [ edit ]

  • Jelai Highlands Resort , Jalan Ampang, ☏ +60 9-3622600 . This aging resort looks more appealing from afar than up close, but it's comparatively economical and functional. Standard (twin) room RM90/110, double (queen) room RM130/160 weekdays/weekends.
  • Fraser's Pine Resort about less than 10 minutes drive from the clock tower. The units are poorly maintained, facilities are old, dirty and dusty.
  • Puncak Inn/Puncak Apartment/Puncak Bungalow: at the town centre opposite the clock tower offers a well good night sleep. Well maintained, with affordable rates.

Splurge [ edit ]

The best way to splurge on Fraser's Hill is to rent a private bungalow . Rates vary widely, from under RM300/day for a small, crumbling bungalow to RM1500/day for a top-of-the-line outfit complete with housekeeper. All bungalow have multiple bedrooms and can easily fit 4 or more people. Book directly with the Fraser's Hill Development Corporation/Information Counter /Puncak Inn, ☏ +60 9-36220007 .

  • 3.7178 101.7298 1 Ye Olde Smokehouse , ☏ +60 9-3622226 , fax : +60 9-3622035 . Jalan Jeriau. This Tudor-style house is the best choice for a spot of colonial swank. Rooms from RM280, including English breakfast. Avoid ground floor rooms -- you won't be able to sleep from the noise of the guests above walking around. Breakfast is great, but dinner is overpriced.

Connect [ edit ]

Start your visit by dropping into the Fraser's Hill Tourist Information Centre on Jalan Genting, to your left past the top gate of the Gap. They hand out a useful (albeit scaleless) map and can advise on trails and such.

Stay safe [ edit ]

The trails are fairly well marked but not trivial, so register your intentions with the Tourist Information Centre ( ☏ +60 9 3622007 ) if you plan on tackling the longer ones. Watch out for muddy trails after rain and take precautions against leeches. Malayan tigers have been spotted very occasionally, but they shy away from humans.

Be careful not to leave anything of value in your car or trunk of value when you are visiting places like the waterfall, as there have been cases of cars being burgled.

About Fraser's Hill

Fraser’s Hill , also known as Bukit Fraser (in Bahasa) or 福隆港 (in Chinese) is a hill station located on the mountain ridge of the Peninsula Malaysia (Banjaran Titiwangsa or Titiwangsa Mountain), about a 2.5-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur.

If you’re looking for a popular weekend and holiday getaway spot, do check out Fraser’s Hill. It is a hidden gem more commonly known to locals. It’s less commercialized and touristy than the other hill/highlands i.e. Cameron Highlands and Genting Highland. If lush greeneries and enjoying the chilly breeaze is your cup of tea, do check out this hidden gem over the weekend!

Fraser's Hill Itinerary at a Glance

Things to know before going to fraser's hill.

Fraser's Hill

Weather is cooling since it’s located on the hill. According to https://www.fraserhill.info/, temperature ranges between 22 – 28°C during the day and 16°C to 20°C at night. So do bring along your hoodie, jacket, and favourite blanket for the trip. However, since it’s closer to the sun, don’t forget to  wear your sunscreen as it could get really sunny, and bring an umbrella along as it rains pretty often up there.

Things to Do in Fraser's Hill:-

1. kuala kubu bharu - breakfast at sun sun nam cheong.

Fraser's Hill - Sun Sun Nam Cheong

On our way to Fraser’s Hill, we’ve made a breakfast stop at Kuala Kubu Bharu, a small quaint town at the foothill of Fraser’s Hill. There is a classic old-school Hainanese restaurant called Sun Sun Nam Cheong 新南昌 serving local cuisine.  We arrived around 9.00am, which is a perfect time for breakfast.   We’ve ordered their signature Hainanese chicken chop , a Roti Bakar (Toast bread) served with Kaya and butter, along with two half boiled eggs. The food here has a very homey feel, a basic kopitian food with lovely setting, just brings us back in time.

What we’ve ordered:-

  • Hainanese Chicken Chop
  • Roti Bakar (Toast with Kaya and Butter)
  • Half Boiled Eggs
  • Orange Juice

2. Look Out Point at Sungai Selangor Dam

Fraser's Hill - Kuala Kubu Bharu Sungai Selangor Dam

After our breakfast, we’ve stopped by the Look out point at Sungai Selangor Dam . On the way to Fraser’s Hill coming from Kuala Kubu Bharu, you will definitely would pass by this amazing view of the Sungai Selangor Dam. We stopped by the Lookout Point to have a grasp of the scenic view. We do notice some people picnic here, as there are some tables and chairs available for the public. Plus it’s free! The dam was pretty filled this round, whereas the water level could be lower during dry seasons.

Fraser's Hill - Kuala Kubu Bharu Sungai Selangor Dam

3. Chiling River

Fraser's Hill - Chiling River

Just 5 minutes away from the Sungai Selangor Dam is the Chilling River .  There is a waterfall called the chilling waterfall where you have to hike for about an hour. It is open from Fridays to Sundays but we totally skipped that plan.  We could already hear the sound of the river from the parking area. There’s a little bit of stairs to go down to the stream about 2 minutes. However we were a little disappointed along the way as the place was littered with leftover food packagings and it really spoils the atmosphere. Luckily it was much cleaner at the stream. The water from the dam actually comes from this river. I t’s a famous for a picnic spot, and you could even take a dip since the water was rather shallow.

4. Fraser's Hill Clock Tower

Fraser's Hill - Clock Tower

After our stop at Chilling River , we headed up to Fraser’s Hill. It takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour from the foothill.

As we reach closer to our destination, we notice there were more Pine Trees along the way. Once we arrived at Fraser’s Hill, we were greeted by the iconic Fraser’s Hill Clock Tower . There were many tourists circling that roundabout, trying to take photos with the town’s famous icon, and of course we had to take some photo and videos ourselves too!

5. Lunch at The Pines Resort

Fraser's Hill - The Pines Resort

Initially, we wanted to have lunch at Aida Daniya Restaurant but unfortunately, it was closed, so we headed to The Pines Resort as they have a cafe in the resort itself that is open to the public.

The Pines Resort cafe serves quite a variety of Chinese dishes.  We’ve ordered three dishes: cantonese fried noodles,  seafood fried rice and also some mixed vegetables.

Fraser's Hill - The Pines Resort Cafe

  • Cantonese Fried Noodles
  • Seafood Fried Rice
  • Mixed Vegetables

Birdwatching in Fraser's Hill

The Pines Resort café has a beautiful view and this spot is well-known to birdwatchers as there are many pine trees around with some rare birds apparently. We are not bird watchers so we won’t be able to appreciate as much the thrill of looking at birds.

In fact, Fraser’s Hill is one of the top spots in the world for bird watching.

6. Ye Olde Smokehouse

Fraser's Hill - Ye Olde Smokehouse

Around 6pm, we’ve made our way to Ye Olde Smokehouse for dinner.

It has a very vintage English decoration, super cute and very lovely environment. It feels like we’ve just travelled through time. Ye Olde Smokehouse do provide  accommodations as well.

Fraser's Hill - Ye Olde Smokehouse

  • Roast Lamb Leg (RM65.00)
  • Beef Wellington (RM78.00)
  • Cream of Pumpkin (RM18.00)

7. Hiking in Fraser's Hill - Hemmant Trail

Fraser's Hill - Hiking Hermant Trail

Fraser’s Hill is a popular spots for hikers. There are quite a number of trails, each has its own challenges and difficulty level. Well, we’re not so much of a hiker ourselves, so we took the easiest trail, called the Hemmant Trail .

Fraser's Hill - Hiking Hermant Trail

In front of every trail, there’ a signboard and a little map to indicate what kind of challenge you would be facing in the trail.

Fraser's Hill - Hiking Hermant Trail

Hemmant trail takes about 40 minutes hike, that is if you’re slow like us but for a good reason –  Hemmant trail is a scenic trail . Along the hike, it was very breezy, some paths were paved, and we barely break a sweat. Going downwards, we have the forest on our right while the golf course on our left. Among the branches, you could easily spot many types of birds during the hike. One of the best part is there were no nasty-blood-sucking leeches along this trail.

Fraser's Hill - Hiking Hermant Trail

After probably more than 40 minutes and many stops later, we’ve completed our trail and arrived at the main road, next to Fraser’s Hill mosque and restaurant called Hamzah where we had our breakfast.

Fraser's Hill - Hiking Hermant Trail

8. Walking Around Fraser's Hill

Fraser's Hill - Walking Around

We’ve continued our exercise by walking around the town in Fraser’s Hill, and take some photos while enjoying the weather and the view.

Fraser's Hill - Walking Around

One thing we love about Fraser’s Hill is the cute vintage colonial buildings, like the post office and police stations, which are still functioning up till today. They were built about 100 years ago, 1919 for the police station for example.

Fraser's Hill - Walking Around

There’s this spot where you actually get to stand between the border of two states, Selangor and Pahang, which we had to take a picture with!

During the weekends, vendors would set up stalls selling snacks along the the golf course areas.

Fraser's Hill - Walking Around

Most of the attractions on Fraser’s Hill uses cash. If you’re running low on hard cash, do not worry, you would be able to find an ATM to withdraw your cash from the Maybank Branch located at Shazan Inn near the town area.

Around Fraser’s Hill, there are lots of gardens and picnic spots. We do enjoy walking along the golf course area.

There’s also a food court here in Fraser’s Hill called the Food Garden. You can find a lot of local food choices over here and they’re all pretty affordable.

Fraser's Hill - Playground

This is probably one of the biggest playground areas in Fraser’s Hill, right next to the food court. There’s a little mini golf area where you can rent a mini golf set for RM8.

Fraser's Hill - Walking Around

9. Breakfast at Hamzah Restaurant

Fraser's Hill - Kedai Makan Hamzah

After our morning hike, we’ve stopped by Hamzah (Kedai Makan dan Minuman Hamzah) for breakfast. This little spot is right beside the mosque, Masjid Sultan Mahmud.

Fraser's Hill - Kedai Makan Hamzah

  • Nasi Lemak with Ayam Rendang
  • Nasi Lemak with fried egg
  • Horlicks drink (hot)

Fraser's Hill - Kedai Makan Hamzah

10. Allan's Water - Paddling and Fish Feeding

Fraser's Hill - Allan's Water

Next, we’ve went to a lake called Allan’s Water for paddling and fish feeding.

We rented a paddle boat for RM10 which gave us 15 minutes to enjoy the serene surrounding of the lake while pedaling.

Over here you can buy some fish pallet to feed the fishes, and apparently there were a few cute ducks hanging around the lake too! These fishes were really well fed and they’re expecting food whenever they see human passing by.

Fraser's Hill - Allan's Water

11. Fraser's Edible Garden

Fraser's Hill - Fraser's Edible Garden

Right  next to the Allan’s Water is this little farm that you can actually buy some vegetables. There are flowers and strawberries here too. We’ve decided to buy some radish and cauliflower, and requested the seller to let us pluck our own vegetables.

Fraser's Hill - Fraser's Edible Garden

This was our first time harvesting radish and cauliflower, which was really cool, giving me Harvest Moon moments!

Fraser's Hill - Fraser's Edible Garden

12. Aida Daniya Restaurant and English Teahouse

Fraser's Hill - Aida Daniya Restaurant

Time passes real quick and it was lunch time! We’ve tried to go to the restaurant where we originally wanted to go the day before (Friday), and was glad it’s open today, Saturday 🙂

This restaurant is called Aida Daniya Restaurant and English Teahouse . It could get really crowded during the weekends and school holidays as this place is pretty popular.

Fraser's Hill - Aida Daniya Restaurant

O ne of the reason is because of the lovely view while you get to sip down on your tea and take a bite of your scone. The food is pretty decent, we’ve ordered a  tea set for one, it comes with two scones, strawberry jam and cream . We’ve also got the Spaghetti carbonara with beef and strawberry juice.

It’s very common for cyclists and bikers to come up to Fraser’s Hill.

Fraser's Hill - Aida Daniya Restaurant

13. The Paddock - Horse Riding

Fraser's Hill - The Paddock Horse Riding

After our lunch, we’ve headed to The Paddock for horse riding , which is another thing to do here in Fraser’s Hill.

Horse riding was fun, we didn’t expect how tall it was.

Fraser's Hill - The Paddock Horse Riding

14. The Paddock - Archery

Fraser's Hill - Archery

At The Paddock area, there is also an Archery Range, where we test our Archery skills and gauge our Hunger Games survivability. (Suffice to say, we will not survive :P)

Fraser's Hill - Archery

15. The Glasshouse

For our last stop, we went to the Glasshouse, which is another popular spot in Fraser’s Hill. We’ve took countless photos because the place was so beautiful. We ordered some dessert, highly recommend the Lemon Poppy Seed Cake , and the Matcha Cheesecake is good too. They sell succulent plans here as well.

Fraser's Hill - The Glasshouse

After that we’ve make our way back to Kuala Lumpur, so that’s concludes our 2 days 1 night trip to Fraser’s Hill.

Fraser's Hill - The Glasshouse

How to Get to Fraser's Hill

The journey to Fraser’s Hill takes about 2.5 hours from Kuala Lumpur. The only way to get to Fraser’s Hill is by road via private vehicle . We did read online that you could take a taxi up to Fraser’s Hill, but we’re not too sure about that.

There are basically two routes to get to the top of Fraser’s Hill: 1. from Kuala Kubu Bahru 2. from Bentong

Fraser's Hill - Kuala Kubu Bharu Sungai Selangor Dam

Where to Stay in Fraser's Hill

There isn’t much option when it comes to accommodation in Fraser’s Hill. You’ll find homestays, inns, resorts, and Airbnb here, but don’t have too high of an expectation as there aren’t any fancy hotels up here. We stayed in an apartment at Fraser’s Silverpark Resort.

It was a private property, so we did not take any photo or video in the apartment. There are other apartment/homestays within Silverpark Resort which were really beautifully decorated such as  Colonie Luxe 1121 Fraser’s Hill   which could accommodate up to 10 people.

Fraser's Hill

Fraser’s Hill is a highland resort destination nestled among the mountains of Pahang, located two hours away from Kuala Lumpur. Locally known as Bukit Fraser, this cooling holiday retreat is popular for its nature activities and cooling climate, being one of the last hill stations of Malaysia, an imprint by former British colonial masters.

Fraser’s Hill has its roots in the 1890s, when Scottish prospector Louis James Fraser opened up a tin mine but mysteriously vanished in 1915. In 1917, the bishop of Singapore rediscovered Fraser's Hill while on a hunt for the man, providing suggestions for the area to be developed into a hill station which was brought to fruition by authorities.

Travel Information

Fraser's Hill can be found in the central region of Peninsular Malaysia in the state of Pahang. It lies about two hours north of Kuala Lumpur and 400km away from Singapore in the south. Bukit Fraser has an average altitude of 1,200 meters high but its highest point rises at 1,500 meters at Telekoms loop. Generally, the months with least rainfall fall between April and September, a lapse in the monsoon season.

This would be the best time to travel if you dislike wet surroundings, but the weather can still be unpredictable. It is also recommended to go during off peak seasons, which are months that have no major public or school holidays, in order to enjoy cheap accommodation in hotels and smaller crowds. Temperatures usually range between 22 - 28°C during the day and 16°C to 20°C at night.

Among these eight trails, the most outstanding trails are Pine Tree Trail and Hemmant Trail . If your primary intention is hiking and trekking, you must stay at Fraser’s Hill for the night to explore all these trails.

Pine Tree Trail

Pine-Tree-Trail-fraser-hill-Malaysia

Pine Tree Trail is the longest and most challenging trail of Fraser’s Hill. This trail is pretty popular among local hiking enthusiasts. The length of this trail is 5 km above sea level,  and it takes nearly 5 to 8 hours to climb up.

To reach the top of the Pine Tree Trail, you must face many ups and downs of the hill. This shape of the terrain makes hiking most challenging. However, you will get facilities like stairs and ropes to help you down the track in this forest.

But the splendid view of the hilltop will make you forget all the hustle. And once you reach the top, you can relax and enjoy the refreshing atmosphere of Pine Tree Trail. The hilltop view also gives you many iconic photos to capture.

Note: You have to get an advance permit from department of forest to hike in Pine Tree Trail

Hemmant Trail

Hemmant-Trail-fraser-hill

If you’re a beginner or you’ve come with your family and don’t want to climb any challenging trail, then Hemmant Trail is best for you. This trail is fit for jungle trekking and much more accessible than any other trail in Fraser’s Hill.

To cover the whole Hemmant Trail, you only need 30 minutes as it has only a distance of 1 kilometre. In this forest area, you can experience the serene beauty of nature.

3. Bird Watching

''Bird Watching' 'Fraser Hill Bird Interpretive Center

Bird watching is always an incredible activity that you can do on vacation. Malaysia has numerous rainforests and highlands that will give you bird watching experience. But Bukit Fraser is one of the most popular bird-watching destinations among them, especially in Peninsular Malaysia.

The core reason for being the first-class bird-watching destination is Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race and Fraser’s Hill Bird Interpretive center .

Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race

Frasers-Hill-International-Bird-Race

Bukit Fraser hosts the International Bird Race every year, and thousands of visitors come here only to watch this bird race. Even people from the neighbouring countries come to Bukit Fraser to watch the race. It is pretty well known among locals as well as foreigners.

Besides the bird race, people also participate in the bird photography contest and photography exhibition . This program is held for two days in the early part of the year.

Fraser Hill Bird Interpretive Center

Fraser-Hill-Bird-Interpretive-Center

Fraser’s Hill Bird Interpretive center is the soul of this highland destination. Whenever you take a vacation in Bukit Fraser, you must not miss the Bird center as it is a gallery of local as well as migratory bird species.

You can become acquainted with nearly 250 species of birds, including doves, eagles, hornbills, pheasants, and many other endemic species. A lot of migratory birds from Japan, China, and Russia come to Fraser’s Hill during a specific season to escape from the freezing winter and find some pasture. The Bird center allows visitors from 10 am to 7 pm, and you need no extra fee to get entry.

4. Archery & Horse riding @ The Paddock

The Paddock

Horse riding is quite exciting and traditional. Moreover, it is one of the must-do activities in Bukit Fraser. The Paddock Fraser Hill offers opportunities to those who have a craving for equestrian activities.

Under the supervision of a certified trainer, you can ride a horse in a controlled atmosphere. It will also give you a stunning view of the surroundings.

Bukit Fraser gives a second chance to the retired racehorses to live their lives in peace. Basically, at the Paddock, all the horses that are used for riding are retired racehorses. And the best part is you can ride those horses at a very cheap price, RM9.00 for adults and RM6.50 for children.

Besides horse riding, the Paddock also entertains with archery for those of you who like mild activities. Because not everyone has enthusiasm for horse riding and people might look for other activities that are less challenging. The charge fee for archery is also very reasonable as you can have ten arrows for only RM11.00.

5. Boating @ Allan’s Water

Allan's Water

Allan’s Water is a small lake that has been converted into a recreational park, and it has opened its door to the visitors to give an experience of paddle boating. It is the only lake in Fraser’s Hill that can give you a boating experience with a paddle boat run by two persons.

During boating, you can also feed the fish that live in this pond. The fish are very calm and friendly. To get a paddle boat for 15 minutes, you need to pay RM10.00. There is a counter where you can book boats, and it also comes with safety jackets.

If you think boating is the only activity that you can do at Allan’s Water, then you are wrong! It also has Zorbing, that giant water ball with which you can play. The waterball fee is RM15, and you can play only for 10 minutes at this price.

Meanwhile, many visitors come here to enjoy the enchanting atmosphere of the lakeside. The green trees and the sound of birds add a natural peace to this place.

6. Play Golf @ Fraser’s Hill Golf Club

Fraser's Hill Golf Club

How about playing golf at 1524 metres above sea level? If you want to have this experience, you must opt for the Royal Fraser’s Hill Golf Club . It is situated just opposite the Clock Tower and has the fame of being one of the earliest golf courses in Malaysia.

Although Bukit Fraser Royal Golf Club has only nine holes, don’t judge the course by its small size. Compared to other golf courses, this one has pretty challenging sections to engage you. Because of its cool temperature and relatively tough surface, you will find it difficult to play golf.

The best time to come here for golfing is during the weekdays as this place is less crowded on weekdays. The late morning makes the weather most suitable for playing golf.

The golf club has no buggy service, so you have to walk if you’re willing to visit each hole. But I can assure you that the beautiful surrounding forest scenery will not make you tired to walk throughout the golf course.

In case you feel tired and hungry, there is a small café that will offer you tea and snacks with a terrace view.

7. Explore Jeriau Waterfalls

Jeriau-Waterfalls

The waterfall is one of the most incredible gifts of nature, and no one of us wants to miss a single chance to admire the enchanting beauty of a waterfall. Here at Bukit Fraser, you can explore the beauty of Jeriau Waterfall though it is 4 km away from the main town.

Within 30 minutes, you can get to the Jeriau Waterfall by hiking. If you have kids with you and you’re anxious about whether it is safe for kids or not? Don’t worry! Jeriau Waterfall forms a shallow pool that has just enough quantity of water you need to bathe safely with kids.

Apart from taking a dip into the cool water, you can also get some rest at the nearby bench and set a picnic mat in the picnic area.

Avoid visiting the waterfall during the monsoon season from November to January. The rain is too heavy that the water turns murky in this season.

Note: Jeriau Waterfalls closed until further notice due to recent landslide

8. Spend a Night @ the Fraser Hill Smokehouse

Fraser Hill Smokehouse

Fraser Hill Smokehouse or Ye Olde Smokehouse , whatever you call it, is one of the best attractions in Bukit Fraser that will give you the old-world English vibe. It is a boutique hotel and restaurant and probably the earliest hotel available since 1937.

The restaurant serves some traditional and authentic English-Asian cuisine like Beef Wellington, Sunday Roast, Lamb Shank, and many more. But what you must try at the Smokehouse is the English tea and scones.

During weekends, it is so hard to get a schedule for afternoon tea as this place gets too busy. And if you decide to stay here for the night, try to book the hotel early because it has only 14 rooms and suites available.

9. Be Witness of Fascinating English-Style Bungalows

English-Style Bungalows

If any highland promises you to show the most English-style homes and bungalows , then it is Fraser’s Hill. As the Bukit Fraser was built under the observation of the English administration, the English people had made many bungalows and houses here to have some rest from the heat of Malaysia.

Though the English colonial era ended many years ago, their signature landmarks still remained here. Most of these bungalows are now used as hotels and rest houses. These accommodations will show you British architecture and style with its utmost beauty.

''Food Garden'' Bukit Fraser

On any vacation or trip, the must-do activity is to try its local food, and the Food Garden is the local food heaven of Bukit Fraser. It is a large food counter in this highland and serves the best Malay, Chinese, and Indian local cuisine.

The Food Garden is situated in Taman Awam park and gets popular because of its size, facilities, and variety of choices. Here you’ll find simple rice and noodles served in entirely different ways with local textures. The colourful snacks, delicious cakes, and pastries are must-try items here. And all these dishes come at a very reasonable price, so make yourself full at the Food Garden.

12. Learn Agriculture @ Edible Garden

Edible Garden

Located next to Allan’s Water, Edible Garden is an agricultural farm where you will get a free gardening workshop to do. This garden is not so big in size, but it houses numerous ornamental plants, flowers, vegetables, and obtained seeds.

The vegetables that are available here are tomatoes, salads, green leafy and these are grown in the selected area of this compound. On the other hand, there is a large greenhouse to plant strawberries, flowers, and other ornamental plants.

This strawberry cafe is purely Halah, so Muslim visitors can opt for it without any hesitation. If you want to have local cuisine, don’t worry, it’s also available here. Even you can buy strawberry jam from this cafe as a souvenir. The cafe is currently under renovation and once complete it will be operate from 08:00 am to 06:00 pm, and you will get free entry here.

14. Buy Some Souvenir

Gift-shop

Whenever we visit a new place, we want to have some memories of it. Yes, pictures are a great way to collect memories. But besides pictures, the other option that we love most is to collect the souvenirs from the local shops. Buying souvenirs for family, friends, or even for yourself is a must-do activity on any trip.

At Bukit Fraser, you will find these local souvenir shops in the Food Garden. From t-shirts caps to daily necessities, snacks and drinks all are available in those shops. But you have to make your purchases in the daylight as after dark all shops and restaurants get closed.

15. Play Gasing

Playing gasing is a fun activity at Fraser’s Hill. It is a traditional game and most famous among local village children. At Bukit Fraser, there is a small complex where visitors can try this easy but interesting game at cheap rates.

16. Visit the Exotic Orchids @ Sanyi Orchid Garden

Sanyi Orchid Garden

17. Try Coffee and Cakes @ the GlassHouse Fraser’s Hill

GlassHouse Fraser's Hill

If you have a sweet tooth and are also a coffee lover, you should at least once visit GlassHouse Fraser’s Hill . It is a small café that will give you an elegant vibe of a greenhouse. Basically, the cafe is built with the concept of a greenhouse, and here they have a collection of cacti that they kept on display.

With delicious cakes and coffee, you will also get many spots to click photos for your Instagram. The place is only open on weekends from 10:00 am to 06:00 pm.

18. Play Indoor Games @ Sports Complex

The Sports Complex is situated in the same building where the Bird Interpretive Center is and offers visitors so many activities to be fit and have fun. It is also a kind of fitness center where you can have a gym, sauna, and play table tennis, squash, and snooker.

And if you haven’t got enough pictures yet, you can take photos in that small flower garden which is located in front of the Sports Complex.

How to Go to Fraser’s Hill

PRIVATE TRANSFER

In spite of being one of the most popular holiday destinations, Fraser’s Hill has no direct public transport to this highland from Kuala Lumpur. The only way to get to Bukit Fraser from the capital is by car, and it takes only two hours to reach.

The highland is nearly 100 km away north from Kuala Lumpur , and most visitors come here in their personal car, though you can also take a taxi to get there. But the taxi cost is too high.

Booking a trip from a tour company can be helpful to get there. Moreover, they will also guide you on your trip.

Some History about Frasers Hill

History about Frasers Hill

There is an interesting and mysterious history around Fraser’s Hill. Louis James Fraser was a Scottish adventurer who came to this land in search of gold. But instead of gold, he found tin and made a tin mine here in the 1890s.

As this highland was discovered by Louis James Fraser, it was also named after him. Unfortunately, after 25 years, Fraser disappeared without leaving any trace.

In 1917, a search team came here to search Fraser, but they failed to find him. However, they found this highland has less heat than the other parts of Malaysia and thought that the area was highly suitable for a hill station.

By 1922, this team had built an access road to the top and opened it to the public. Since that time, it has been one of the great highland destinations in Malaysia because of its cool weather and numerous attractions and activities.

Best Time to Visit Frasers Hill

Fraser’s Hill is an excellent place for a short-time holiday, and anytime whenever you feel you need some cool atmosphere, you can opt for Bukit Fraser. But the monsoon season from November to January can be a good time to visit this place as the temperature gets cooler and more mist is seen in this time.

However, the monsoon also comes with heavy rain, which can ruin your vacation, so be careful of that.  If you don’t like overcrowding, you should avoid visiting on weekends or public holidays.

Things to do in Fraser’s Hill- comprehensive guide to all attractions

Posted on Last updated: January 26, 2024

Categories Pahang , Visit Malaysia

Fraser's HIll

Our recent trip to Fraser’s Hill was a mesmerizing experience. Having visited the place over 30 years ago, we were eager to see what had changed. During our two-night stay, we explored every nook and cranny of this quaint town, taking in the breathtaking scenery and misty environment. The serenity of the trails was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, and every breath we took was refreshing.

While some places met our expectations, we also faced a few disappointments.

If you’re interested in our real experience and every place we visited, keep reading to discover more.

1. Drive to Fraser’s Hill from Kuala Lumpur

We started our journey from Kuala Lumpur via Kuala Kubu Bharu and arrived at the Gap, a mountain pass serving as the gateway to the narrow, winding road leading up to Fraser’s Hill. This journey was similar to our last trip many years ago.

Things to do in Fraser's Hill

More than thirty years ago, we visited Fraser’s Hill, where the Gap was the point at which the two-way road became a one-way road. Traffic went up on even hours and came down on odd hours. You had to wait at the Gap Resthouse if you missed the gate time. However, the Gap Resthouse is no longer in operation as a second road from Fraser’s Hill to the Gap was constructed in 2001.

Things to do in Fraser's Hill

The old road from the Gap to Fraser’s Hill is now permanently open to traffic heading up, while the new road is the one-way route down. This backyard exit takes you back on the trunk route just about a minute driving distance away from the road going up to Fraser’s Hill.

We traveled along the narrow, winding road flanked by lush rainforests and majestic mountain ridges, which made us feel close to nature.

This journey from Kuala Lumpur takes approximately two hours and forty-five minutes, but we took much more time than that because we took a break at the Lookout Point Sungai Selangor Dam and the Chiling Waterfalls.

Note: No public transport is available going up to Fraser Hill, so the best way is to rent a car if you are coming from abroad.

2. Attractions at Fraser’s Hill that we have visited

Below is a list of the places we have visited, and we truly enjoy visiting them.

Things to do in Fraser's Hill

a. Town Centre

Fraser’s Hill is a picturesque English village surrounded by lush rainforest. During our entire trip, it was often covered in a thick mist and frequent drizzles, adding a touch of mystery to this quaint township.

Things to do in Fraser's Hill

The charming clock tower is a unique landmark that is the starting point for all explorations in Bukit Fraser. It branches out in different directions across the valley from a small roundabout.

Things to do in Fraser's Hill, (The library)

We found that the township has remained frozen in time, precisely the same as when we first visited years ago. The post office, the library, and the police station are all old English-style houses and bungalows.

b. The Sports Complex

The Sports Complex is a well-known indoor recreation center opposite the town’s roundabout and clock tower in Bukit Fraser. The building’s contemporary architecture facade is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the town. It houses the reception counter for golfing activities and the Bird Center. It is a popular spot for photographs.

Things to do in Fraser's Hill

c. Bird Interpretive Center

The Bird Interpretive Center is a place that exhibits a wide range of local and migratory bird species in the area. It is situated on the first floor of the Sports Complex, opposite Puncak Inn Hotel, at the town roundabout. The entry is free of charge between 10 am and 7 pm.

Things to do in Fraser's Hill

Fraser’s Hill is a haven for bird watchers, with the best bird watching season being around June to July when migrating birds are present. However, bird watching activities are available throughout the year. During our visit in January, there were still a few groups of bird watchers, but they may have been disappointed with the thick mist hindering their effort to capture stunning photographs of the birds.

Things to do in Fraser's Hill, bire watching

Note : Fraser’s Hill is a well-known destination for bird-watching enthusiasts, with over 250 species of birds recorded in the area, including hornbills, doves, pheasants, eagles, and other endemic species. During certain seasons, migratory birds from Russia, Japan, and China visit Fraser’s Hill to escape the harsh winter weather and find food. These birds stay for a few months before continuing their journey south towards warmer regions like Australia and New Zealand before eventually returning to their native lands.

d. Bungalow to take photographs:

Fraser’s Hill is a place that has a lot of English bungalows that date back to the colonial era. Many of these bungalows have been renovated and transformed into tourist accommodations. Some have been turned into boutique hotels, while others are privately owned.

These bungalows have a unique design and name, with most of them using rough stone slabs to create patchy grey frames, interiors, and sharp triangular roofs typical of English countryside cottages. It is an ideal location to take photographs that remind you of the old times during the colonial era.

Things to do in Fraser's Hill, Sultan Mahmud Mosque

The Cottage. A charming colonial-era Tudor bungalow called The Cottage, also known as Banglo Bentong, is located near the Fraser’s Hill town center. It is situated behind Kedai Makan Hamzah, close to the mosque. Puncak Inn Hotel manages the bungalow and is an ideal boutique family accommodation for up to 8 people. It features a living hall, kitchen, dining room, and comfortable bedrooms with attached bathrooms and hot water shower facilities.

Things to do in Fraser's Hilln Abu Suradi

Abu Suradi. Abu Suradi is a charming colonial bungalow known as Banglo Tioman. It is situated on the main road near the mosque and PKBF building. The unique bungalow has two spacious bedrooms next to each other from the entrance. The bungalow is near the town, and guests can easily access the Food Garden and Kedai Makan Hamzah.

Things to do in Fraser's Hill, Hollebeke

Hollebeke. Located on a hill near the town, Hollebeke, also known as Banglo Cini, is a beautiful colonial-era bungalow that features Tudor architecture. The bungalow offers a stunning backdrop of apartment buildings at Fraser’s Silverpark Resort, and it can be reached via a steep road that begins from the right of the roundabout after the Tourist Information Centre.

Things to do in Fraser's Hill, Ye Olde Smokehouse.

Ye Olde Smokehouse. The Smokehouse Inn is a bungalow mansion on the Heritage Trail. We stayed there for a night and will write a separate article about our experience.

e. The Jungle Trails

Fraser’s Hill offers a variety of jungle trails for hikers to explore. We took on a few trails during our visit.

The Hemmant Trail

The Hemmant Trail is a popular hiking trail from a grassy clearing behind the mosque along Genting Road. The trail ends at a paved road just before it forks towards Muar Cottage on the left and Glen Bungalow on the right.

Abu Suradi Trail:

Abu Suradi Trail: A 500m trail that is suitable for beginners and offers a relatively easy hike.

Mager Trail:

Mager Trail: A trail that begins at the end of the Abu Surad Trail, eventually leading us back to the border of Pahang and Selangor.

Rompin Trail

Rompin Trail is near Smokehouse Inn, where we were staying. Unfortunately, the trail is poorly maintained, with a broken path, and it appeared that no one had hiked it in a long time. At the beginning of the trail, there was a steep descent with no clear path. As a result, we decided to turn back after a few minutes and did not complete the trail.

Pine Tree Trail

After abandoning the Rompin Trail, we attempted to access Pine Tree Trail but found it prohibited from entering.

Fraser’s Hill has three additional trails: Bishop, Kindlesley, and Maxwell. We chose not to attempt these trails as we had other plans.

f. The Royal Fraser’s Hill Golf Club

Fraser’s Hill is a well-known spot for golf enthusiasts. We had a round of golf once before, but we don’t plan to play this time. We plan to enjoy Fraser’s Hill’s cool weather and the beautiful scenery.

The Royal Fraser's Hill Golf Club

It is one of the country’s oldest and most challenging golf courses. Although it is a 9-hole walking course, the hilly forest terrain is challenging. If you intend to play golf here, no buggies are available.

g. Taman Awam

Taman Awam is a lovely recreational park near the Food Garden. This park is a popular spot for families with young children on weekends, and there is no entrance fee. The park features a colorful playground situated on a mound, a small tarmac circuit, benches, and gazebos. It has a backdrop of exotic conifer trees.

Taman Awam

3. Our disappointments

We had a great time exploring the places mentioned earlier. However, we encountered some disappointment as some places were closed. It could be because of the low season with fewer visitors, or it might have just been a matter of being closed on that particular day.

a. Jeriau Waterfall

The journey to Jeriau waterfall, located roughly 4km from the heart of Bukit Fraser, is an adventure. The steep, narrow road that descends sharply after the Smokehouse Inn adds a thrilling element to the visit, making the two-way traffic route, which accommodates only a single lane for most of its length, an exciting part of the experience.

Jeriau Waterfall

Upon arrival at the parking area and entrance gate, we were greeted by a notice that it was closed due to the monsoon season 🙁

It also means that the best season to visit Fraser Hill is not during the monsoon season, from October until March.

Nonetheless, we enjoy riding on the narrow road leading to the waterfall. It was tranquil, with no pollution and no Internet. We were the only car throughout the journey.

The Paddock is a popular destination for horse-riding enthusiasts. In addition to the horse-riding track, it has a small garden area with comfortable benches, providing a perfect spot to rest and enjoy the surrounding greenery, including majestic conifer trees. If you’re interested in archery, practice at the range at the bottom of the slope near the entrance.

Paddock

We arrived there at about 10:00 am on a Thursday, but unfortunately, the gate was locked, and nobody was there. We tried to call the phone number on the signboard, but nobody answered. We’re not sure why it was closed, but since we weren’t mainly there for horse riding, we decided to continue to our next destination.

Paddock

c. Allan’s Water

Allan’s Water is a small lake in a little nook before Jelai Highland Resort at Jalan Ampang Road, next to Edible Garden. It was turned into a park for recreational activities and paddle boating from a reservoir that fell into disuse over the years.

Allan's Water

Open daily from 9 am till 4.30 pm (with a lunch break for staff, closes at 7 pm on weekends), the park is a popular tourist attraction that gets crowded during public holidays. We arrived too late in the afternoon, and the gate was already closed. However, we managed to take some photos of the lake from outside.

Allan's Water

d. Edible Garden and Strawberry Garden

We decided not to visit the Edible Garden and the Strawberry Garden as we had been to Cameron Highlands before and had already seen several similar gardens. However, if you haven’t visited any strawberry gardens before, it’s worth making a trip.

4. Accommodation and eateries:

We will write a separate article about accommodations and eateries in Fraser’s Hill and include the link once done.

5. Conclusion: Is Fraser’s Hill worth visiting?

It’s a difficult question to answer because it depends on your preferences. If you love nature, it’s an excellent place to visit. However, there are a few downsides to be aware of. Some of the trails we visited were not well-maintained and had broken handrails. Other trails were overgrown with plants, making them hard to find. Despite these issues, exploring the forest is still worth it if you’re feeling adventurous and don’t mind these obstacles.

On the other hand, if you enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere of an old English village, you’ll love it here. The cozy ambiance, misty weather, cool breeze, and Tudor-style homes will transport you out of Malaysia. Take a break from the city’s hustle and bustle, relish the natural surroundings, and you’ll find peace, tranquility, and serenity.

A Brief History of Fraser’s Hill

Fraser’s Hill is a picturesque hill station in Pahang state, Malaysia. The hill station is named after Louis James Fraser, a Scottish trader and accountant who migrated to the Federated Malay States in 1890 after a failed gold mining venture in Australia. Fraser was looking for new opportunities in tin mining when he stumbled upon the hill that would later be named after him. Fraser’s Hill was once a hub for mining activity, and it was during this time that Fraser decided to explore the upper ridges for valuable minerals such as gold. To aid him in his expedition, Fraser hired local guides and coolies to accompany him. It was during this exploration that Fraser discovered rich tin deposits on the hill. He then recruited Chinese miners to help him establish a mine, which would later become the present-day location of Fraser’s Hill golf course, known as Pamah Lebar. However, the tin ore was depleted quickly by 1913, leading to a decline in mining activity. Many Chinese miners and farmers moved away from the town, leaving Fraser’s Hill abandoned. It was not until C. J. Ferguson-Davie, the bishop of Singapore, discovered the place that it was deemed suitable for building a hill station to retreat from the hot climate. In 1919, F.W. Mager, the state engineer of Pahang, initiated the construction of Fraser’s Hill by surveying the area for building construction and clearing the land surrounding Fraser’s former bungalow. He also constructed a road from The Gap to access the hill station. The site was renamed Fraser’s Hill and was made available for visitors in 1922.

If you enjoy hill resorts, you might also love visiting Cameron Highlands. We’ve written some articles about it, and here’s the link.

Exotic species flags differentiate locally introduced species from native species.

Naturalized : Exotic population is self-sustaining, breeding in the wild, persisting for many years, and not maintained through ongoing releases (including vagrants from Naturalized populations). These count in official eBird totals and, where applicable, have been accepted by regional bird records committee(s).

Provisional : Either: 1) member of exotic population that is breeding in the wild, self-propagating, and has persisted for multiple years, but not yet Naturalized; 2) rarity of uncertain provenance, with natural vagrancy or captive provenance both considered plausible. When applicable, eBird generally defers to bird records committees for records formally considered to be of "uncertain provenance". Provisional species count in official eBird totals.

Escapee : Exotic species known or suspected to be escaped or released, including those that have bred but don't yet fulfill the criteria for Provisional. Escapee exotics do not count in official eBird totals.

Public information for Sensitive Species is restricted due to potential harmful impact to these birds. Site-specific information is visible only to the observer and eBird reviewer(s) for the region. Hide this Checklist

Hiding a checklist will exclude the taxa on it from all forms of eBird output that show a location (including bar charts, maps, and arrival/departure tables), but the observation will still be accessible to you, and will appear on your lists.

It will be considered not public in the eBird database since we cannot approve bird records without accurate location information.

Although we understand that some checklists need to be excluded from eBird's public output due to privacy concerns or other issues, we strongly recommend against this unless absolutely necessary.
