Situated on the Dominsel, the city's Cathedral Island, and located between the River Havel and the Beetzsee, Brandenburg Cathedral (Dom St.Peter und Paul) is the perfect place to begin exploring.

Dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, this picturesque Romanesque basilica with its Gothic alterations was constructed in 1165 and boasts many notable features, including a memorial chapel built in 1953 commemorating Christians murdered during WWII.

Brandenburg an der Havel's Old Town Hall (Altstädtische Rathaus) dates from 1470 and is an attractive two-story Late Gothic brick building. Notable exterior features include its stepped gable, a tower and doorway with rich brick tracery, as well as a large pointed-arched doorway in the east gable.

Another important feature is the statue of Roland , Germany's most famous knight. Located directly in front of the Old Town Hall, it was sculpted in 1474 as a symbol of municipal authority. Other highlights include centuries-old weapons and jewelry, along with numerous interesting multi-media displays and presentations. Split between two locations, the main exhibits of the City Museum Brandenburg an der Havel (Stadtmuseum Brandenburg) are found in the Frey-Haus, a lovely Baroque building constructed in 1723 with a fine staircase hall. In addition to its material illustrating the city's rich history, the museum was established in 1868 and also has an important collection of European graphic art from the 16th - 20th centuries.

Highlights of this collection include an almost complete representation of the work of Daniel Chodowiecki, the famous Polish-German painter and printmaker. There's also a fascinating collection of toys, many of them made in the Brandenburg region.

Large parts of the old city walls in Brandenburg an der Havel still survive. So, too, do a number of well-preserved gate towers. These include the Rathenower Torturm, with its lovely Gothic arcading; the Plauer Torturm, famous for its openwork crown; the Mühltorturm; and the Steintorturm, used to host exhibits from the Brandenburg an der Havel City Museum.

Said to be among the best-preserved medieval fortifications in central Germany, the majority of these stone walls were built in the 14th century. Given the extent of their preservation, it can take the best part of a day to explore them as part of a great walking tour of the old city.

The parish church of St. Catherine (St.-Katharinen-Kirche) dates from 1395 and lies in the center of Brandenburg's new town. A masterpiece of Hinrich Brunsberg, this vaulted hall-church was designed in what's called the "Rich" style. As such, it's an outstanding example of brick-built Gothic architecture.

Of particular interest are the fine gables of the Fronleichnamskapelle, as well as its Late Gothic double-winged altar from 1474. Other highlights include St. Hedwig's Altar from 1457, the font from 1440, the pulpit from 1668, and numerous epitaphs.

Projecting from Marienberg Park like a huge metallic popsicle, the 32.5-meter-high Friedenswarte, Brandenburg an der Havel's highest point, offers superb views of the city and the surrounding countryside. It was built in 1974 and dubbed the "Peace Tower."

More than 180 steps take visitors up to the tower's five observation decks with their panoramic views. It's well worth the effort, and on a clear day, you can expect to see stunning vistas reaching all the way to the city of Potsdam , some 50 kilometers away.

Lehnin Abbey (Kloster Lehnin), the first Cistercian house in Brandenburg an der Havel, was founded in 1180 by Margrave Otto I in Lehnin, just a few miles south of the city. An Early Gothic basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the church was begun in 1190 and consecrated in 1262 and is one of the earliest and most important examples of North German brick-built architecture.

Highlights of a visit include seeing the monks' rooms, the royal lodgings, the granary, and the falconer's house. Be sure to allow time to explore the abbey walls with their triple-arched gatehouse.

The Industrial Museum Brandenburg (Industriemuseum) showcases more than 100 years of the city's important role in Germany's steelmaking industry. The focal point of its many exhibits is its Siemens-Martin open-hearth furnace, the only piece of machinery of its kind in Europe that's still open to the public.

The museum's three main exhibits deal with the social and political impacts of the steel industry, the history of steel production, and the invention of the open-hearth process. Other highlights include workshops, a blacksmith shop, a laboratory, and a steel worker's home. There's also an impressive collection of vintage cars and motorcycles.

Brandenburg an der Havel is the third-largest town in the German state of Brandenburg . The town of some 72,000 inhabitants (2019) focuses on culture, gardens and tourism, having hosted the federal horticultural show in 2015.

Understand [ edit ]

Brandenburg an der Havel (sometimes called Brandenburg City to distinguish it from the eponymous state) is considered the nucleus or cradle of the historical Margraviate and today's State of Brandenburg. It was populated first by Slavs, then conquered by the troops of German King Henry I in 928 or 929. 20 years later, Otto I established the Bishopric of Brandenburg that held both religious and secular power in the region. During the 983 Great Slav Rising, it was reconquered by pagan Slavs, until Albert the Bear founded the Margraviate of Brandenburg in 1157, populating it with Christian, German-speaking settlers. The Brandenburg cathedral was started in 1165.

From the 12th to 18th century, Brandenburg actually consisted of two cities, separated by the River Havel and each protected by its own walls: one centred around the castle, serving as the capital of the secular Margraviate of Brandenburg; and one containing the cathedral, being the residence of the religious Prince-Bishopric of Brandenburg. After the Reformation, the Bishopric was annexed by the Margraviate. The Hohenzollern dynasty moved the capital of the Margraviate to Berlin after 1415, nevertheless Brandenburg an der Havel long claimed to be the higher-ranking city due to its old age. During the Thirty Years War , Brandenburg was severely damaged, lost most of its population and importance.

The town experienced a second boom during industrialisation. The Brennabor works were a famous producer of bicycles, prams, cars and motorcycles; and the town's population doubled within a few decades. Under East Germany's communist rule, Brandenburg again was a site of heavy industries, having major steelworks and mills. After reunification, it was deindustrialised, many people lost their jobs and moved away.

Berlin's most famous landmark, the Brandenburg Gate, is named after Brandenburg an der Havel.

Brandenburg is on the Berlin–Magdeburg railway route, but intercity trains rarely stop here. Instead it is served by half-hourly regional express trains from Potsdam (taking 20–25 minutes) and Berlin (45–55 minutes), hourly from Magdeburg (50 minutes) and Frankfurt (Oder) (two hours).

The closest airport is Berlin Brandenburg Airport ( BER  IATA ), 90 km east of Brandenburg. It takes about 1 hr 20 min to go from the airport to Brandenburg by train (via Potsdam Park Sanssouci).

Brandenburg is on the B 1 highway, 70 km from Berlin's Brandenburg Gate and 40 km west of Potsdam. From the Autobahn A 2 (Berlin–Hanover) you may take the exits Brandenburg or Wollin .

Stadtmarketing- und tourismusgesellschaft brandenburg an der havel.

Die Stadtmarketing- und Tourismusgesellschaft Brandenburg an der Havel (STG) zeigt sich für die touristische Vermarktung der ältesten Stadt der Mark Brandenburg verantwortlich. Ziel ist es, die touristische Entwicklung der Havelstadt weiter voranzutreiben, um somit die Stadt Brandenburg an der Havel als Marke weiter zu etablieren und sie als Urlaubs- und Ausflugsziel noch interessanter zu gestalten.

Die drei Bereiche - Stadtmarketing, Citymanagement und Tourismus - der STG nutzen die gleiche Vorgehensweise und produzieren verschiedene Angebote für unterschiedliche Zielgruppen. Ein attraktives Stadtbild gepaart mit Freizeitangeboten und einem intelligenten Verkehrsmanagement sind zielführende Faktoren für: Touristen, Bewohner und Unternehmen mit ihren Beschäftigten.

Im Stadtmarketing gilt es, die Attraktivität und das Erscheinungsbild der Havelstadt als Wirtschaftsstandort und als Lebensraum für Besucher und Einwohner gleichermaßen zu erhalten sowie stetig weiter zu entwickeln.

Das Citymanagement versteht sich als zentraler Anlaufpunkt und Ideengeber für die innerstädtischen Händler, um die Attraktivität und Vitalität der City maßgeblich zu koordinieren, zu festigen und neuen Gegebenheiten anzupassen.

Die Aufgaben im Tourismus erweisen sich als vielfältig und zukunftsorientiert. Im Fokus stehen die Vermarktung eigener touristischer Destinationen/Angebote und das Ausschöpfen vorhandener Potentiale, um Besucher anzulocken und dadurch steigende Umsatz für alle lokalen Akteure aus Handel und Tourismus zu akquirieren.

Havelland Land am Fluss

Ribbeck im Havelland kennen viele Menschen aus Fontanes berühmtem Gedicht. Im Havelland verbindet die Havel Berlin mit Potsdam und Brandenburg an der Havel . Vom Nordwesten Berlins bis zur Mündung in die Elbe bei Havelberg legt der Strom fast 150 km zurück. Kennzeichnend für seinen Verlauf sind große Seenketten, zahlreiche Flussschlingen und Inseln. Für Wassersportfreunde ein ideales Revier: Hier finden Angler, Segler, Ruderer und Kanufahrer traumhafte Bedingungen.

In Potsdam und Caputh liegen reizvolle Schlösser und Gärten der preußischen Könige dicht am Ufer. Flussbegleitend verläuft auch der Havelradweg, der fantastische Ausblicke in dieses einmalige Wasserrevier der Potsdamer und Brandenburger Havelseen beim Radfahren ermöglicht.

Weiter nördlich, in der Flusslandschaft Untere Havelniederung, fließt die Havel durch die weitestgehend unberührte Naturlandschaft des Naturparks Westhavelland und verzweigt sich in viele Neben- und Seitenarme. Im Herbst wird der  Naturpark Westhavelland zum Rastplatz für zehntausende Zugvögel.

Auf entdeckungsreise wie einst fontane.

Schon Theodor Fontane war von den Begegnungen mit Land, Menschen und Geschichte begeistert und beschrieb sie in seinen "Wanderungen". Reizvolle Schlösser und Gärten wie das Schloss Caputh und das Paretzer "Schloss Still im Land" sind auch in unmittelbarer Umgebung der Landeshauptstadt Potsdam zu finden.

Direkt am Havelland-Radweg liegt das malerische Dorf Ribbeck, das durch Fontanes Gedicht seit Generationen weit über seine Grenzen bekannt geworden ist. Auf dem Rundweg geht es auf den Spuren der Birne durch das Dorf, so manche Gaumenfreude inbegriffen, wie z. B. die legendäre Birnentorte im Alten Waschhaus. Das Fontane-Museum im Schloss Ribbeck widmet sich auch seinem berühmten Gedicht.

Brandenburg an der Havel

Wie eine Lebensader verbindet die Havel mit zahlreichen Wasserarmen die drei historischen Inselstädte, wobei die Dominsel als ältester Siedlungskern auf eine über 1000-jährige Geschichte zurückblickt. Mit historischen Kleinoden empfangen Alt- und Neustadt, die jeweils im 12. Jahrhundert gegründet und 1715 vereinigt wurden, die Besucher. 41,2 Quadratkilometer der Stadtfläche, das entspricht 18 Prozent, sind vom Wasser bedeckt. Wer möchte da nicht Kapitän und mit den eigenen vier Wänden unterwegs sein? Selbst die historische Innenstadt, lässt sich vom Wasser aus erkunden. Denn der Fluss, den in der Stadt 58 Brücken überspannen, verbindet die drei Inselstädte mit seinen Nebenarmen, Gräben sowie Kanälen und schlängelt sich so an über 400 historischen Baudenkmälern vorbei. Auf dem 7 km langen Rundkurs bieten sich viele Anlegemöglichkeiten für einen Landgang mitten in der Stadt an. Aber aufgepasst, Sie werden beobachtet: Die Waldmöpse vom Brandenburger Ehrenbürger Vicco von Bülow alias Loriot schauen Ihnen interessiert zu. Die possierlichen Tierchen sind im gesamten Innenstadtbereich ausgewildert, an der Johanniskirche sind sie sogar im Rudel anzutreffen.

Rathaus mit Roland

Von 1470 bis 1480 errichtet, wurde das Rathaus 1904 wegen Baufälligkeit geschlossen. 1910 bis 1912 wurde es in der heutigen Ansicht wieder aufgebaut. Der Roland ist ein Symbol und stand als Zeichen mittel­alter­licher Rechts­ordnung. Die aus Sand­stein 1474 gestal­tete 5,35 m hohe Statue gehört zu den schönsten Figuren dieser Art in Norddeutschland.

Jahrtausendbrücke mit Salzhof- und Heinrich-Heine-Ufer

Die Jahr­tausend­brücke erhielt ihren Namen 1929, als die Brücke an­lässlich der 1000-Jahr­feier der Stadt einge­weiht wurde. Mitte der 90iger Jahre erfolgte der Neubau der anspruchsvoll gestalteten Brücke. Sie verbindet Alt- und Neustadt sowie Salzhof- und Heinrich-Ufer. Beide Ufer direkt an der Havel gelegen, laden zum Flanieren und Verweilen ein.

Waldmöpse von Loriot

Die gehörnten, plattnasigen Waldmöpse mit Ringelschwänzen, die unlängst ausgewildert wurden, erinnern an den Loriot. Die etwa 50 Zentimeter großen Bronzefiguren sitzen, stehen, schlafen, schnüffeln und heben das Bein. Die possierlichen Tierchen vermehren sich im gesamten Innenstadtbereich, an der Johanniskirche sind sie sogar im Rudel anzutreffen.

Dom St. Peter und Paul

Baubeginn des Domes war 1165, seither ist das Gebäude, nicht zuletzt bedingt durch statische Probleme, vielfach umge­staltet und restau­riert worden. So finden sich viele Spuren vergangener architek­tonischer Gesin­nungen und litur­gischer Nutzungen, die den Dom zu einem einzigartigen Zeugnis der Kultur- und Frömmig­keits­geschichte machen. 

St. Katharinenkirche

Die St. Katharinen­kirche, ist ein her­aus­ragendes Meister­werk nord­deutscher Back­steingotik und zugleich größte Kirche der Havelstadt. Der Bau begann in den 1380er Jahren unter Mitwirkung des Baumeisters Heinrich Brunsberg. Sie ist reich an Innen­aus­stat­tungen und Kunst­werken, wie dem Bronze-Tauf­kessel von 1440 und dem reich­haltigen Figuren­schmuck.

Anreisemöglichkeiten

Aus Richtung Hamburg kommend, folgen Sie der Autobahn A10 bis zur Ausfahrt Groß Kreutz (Nr. 22). Von dort aus fahren Sie weiter auf der Bundesstraße B1 in Richtung Brandenburg an der Havel.

Aus Richtung Hannover/Magdeburg kommend, folgen Sie der Autobahn A2 bis zur Ausfahrt Brandenburg an der Havel (Nr. 78). Aus Richtung Magdeburg/Genthin kommend, folgen Sie der Bundesstraße B1 bis Brandenburg an der Havel.

Aus Richtung Leipzig kommend, folgen Sie der Autobahn A9 bis zum Berliner Ring. Am Dreieck Posdam wechseln Sie auf die A10 und später am Dreieck Werder auf die A2 Richtung Magdeburg. Der A2 folgen Sie bis zur Ausfahrt Brandenburg an der Havel (Nr. 78).

Aus Richtung Berlin/Potsdam/Werder kommend, folgen Sie der Autobahn A2 bis zur Ausfahrt Brandenburg an der Havel (Nr. 78).  Aus Richtung Berlin/Potsdam/Werder kommend, folgen Sie der Bundesstraße B1 bis Brandenburg an der Havel.

Vom Regionalbahnhof Berlin Zoologischer Garten und vom Berliner Hauptbahnhof fahren halbstündlich RegionalExpress-Züge (RE1) nach Brandenburg an der Havel (Hauptbahnhof). Die Fahrtzeit beträgt ca. 40 Minuten.

Sehens­wert sind die drei historischen Stadt­kerne - Altstadt, Neu­stadt sowie Dominsel – mit den imposanten Zeit­zeugen Dom St. Peter und Paul, Pauli­kloster sowie den Kirchen St. Katharinen und St. Gotthardt. Ebenso das Archäologische Landes­museum, Stadt- und Dom­museum sowie Industrie­museum.
