Carvoeiro is a great holiday destination

Who should visit Carvoeiro?

Carvoeiro is a great holiday destination for a variety of different tourists. During the peak summer months, Carvoeiro is primarily a family holiday destination (as with the majority of the Algarve). Outside of the school holidays (May-Jul and Sep-Oct), the town is popular with couples young and old, while attracting a diverse mix of nationalities.

During the low season (Oct-Apr) Carvoeiro is very quiet, but mostly caters for the more mature visitors, who come for the good weather and relaxed social ambience, where the days are spent socialising with like-minded visitors.

Carvoeiro has great facilities and an enjoyable holiday atmosphere

The Carvoeiro region will appeal to outdoor types, with activities including; sea kayaking, hiking, cycle or a round of golf on the region’s famed courses. If you want beautiful natural, then there are unspoilt cliffs heading both east and west, the Praia da Marinha beach, or the Praia dos Caneiros headland.

The one group of tourists Carvoeiro is not really suited for are groups looking to party and have a drink-fuelled holiday, for this head to the Strip in Albufeira or Praia da Rocha. On initial view, Carvoeiro may not seem like a destination for older children and teenagers (12-16), but during the summer the town is surprisingly good for this age range.

The town is close to the major theme parks of Zoomarine and Slide and Splash (but they are expensive day trips), and Carvoeiro does not experience the night-time rowdiness or drunkenness of the larger resorts.

Carvoeiro does have significant tourist development, but the region does not feel as overrun as with many other locations along the Algarve.

Carvoeiro for 2024

Carvoeiro is expecting a sell-out summer season for 2024, as visitors seek holidays to safe and established destinations within Europe.

The combination of returning visitors (who know how good the Algarve is), and new tourists, means that Carvoeiro will sell out. We highly recommend that you book accommodation and flights as soon as possible, before prices increase and sell-out.

Use the map below to discover the best accommodation in Carvoeiro, if you adjust the dates to your holiday it will display current prices and availability.

Carvoeiro for families and young children

Carvoeiro is ideal for families, the beach is safe and calm, while the town’s restaurants and hotels are welcoming of children. Carvoeiro is a favourite with families, as there is a wide selection of sensibly priced self-catering accommodation and this makes the town popular with returning visitors.

For older children and teenagers, the best waterpark of the Algarve, Slide and Splash, is close by, in the town of Lagoa.

The beaches of Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro has one of the most beautiful beaches of the region, with the town opening out onto the soft golden sands that are surrounded by the steep sandstone cliffs.

The beach has an idyllic setting, but it is not one of the largest beaches of the Algarve, and it can get crowded during the summer.

Unlike many other Algarve resort towns, Carvoeiro has no sensible alternative beach within walking distance of the town centre. The only other choice of beach in Carvoeiro is the small Praia do Paraíso (paradise beach), which has very little sand at high tide.

Praia de Carvoeiro

The Praia de Carvoeiro may be small but it is beautiful

The next significant beach is 2km to the east of Carvoeiro, and is the beautiful Praia do Vale de Centeanes. The stunning setting of Centeanes is at the base of massive sandstone cliffs that tower around the golden sands and turquoise waters. Centeanes beach is a long walk from Carvoeiro but the picturesque location is worthy of the effort. Related articles: The beaches of Carvoeiro

Praia de Vale Centeanes

Carvoeiro is ideal for hiking

Carvoeiro boasts numerous hiking routes that follow the steep hills and sheer cliffs of the coastline. One of the most famous trails is the O Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos, which navigates the cliff tops from the Praia da Centeanes beach to the Praia da Marinha, and passes the Benagil Cave.

A more leisurely route is the Carvoeiro Boardwalk, which leads from Carvoeiro town to the fascinating Algar Seco rock formations. Related articles: The Carvoeiro Boardwalk to Algar Seco - The Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos hike

Our opinion: We so highly rate the Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos, that we placed it at number 1 in our “Top 10 of the Algarve.” Related articles: Top 10 Algarve

Boat tours of the coastline

One of the most popular activities while on holiday in Carvoeiro is to join one of the boat tours, as they weave through the caves, arches and large swells of the dramatic Carvoeiro coastline.

The tour boats that depart from Carvoeiro tend to be much smaller, so can navigate through the highly-weathered cliffs, and this includes the outstanding Grutas de Benagil cave. The Algarve sea waters are the migratory route for dolphins heading from the warm Mediterranean to the food-rich Atlantic Ocean. There are daily sightings of dolphins in their natural environment, and they can be seen via the boat tours.

Warning: When booking a boat tour make sure it leaves from Carvoeiro. Most boat tours depart from Albufeira Marina (19km to the west) or Portimão (11km drive). Often the best idea is to book the tour directly from Carvoeiro beach, where the boats depart from.

Grutas de Benagil cave

Benagil cave is a spectacular domed cave that has three arch openings and a vaulted holed roof. The cave walls are lined with beautiful sandstone strata, while at the base of the cave is a small beach; it is easy to see why this is the most photographed natural feature in the Algarve.

The small boat tours from Carvoeiro are able to enter the cave, and depending on the tides, are able to land on the small beach. Benagil Cave is a popular destination for kayak tours. Some people even swim from the nearby beach of Praia de Benagil, but this could never be recommended for obvious safety reasons.

Benagil Cave

Benagil Cave is an amazing natural feature, but expect lots of other tourists to be there also…

When to visit

The Algarve has long hot summers, pleasant springs and autumns, and unpredictable winters that have an equal number of grey days as sunny days. The height of the summer season aligns with the school holidays of July and August.

June and September are as equally busy with holidaymakers who do not have children – if visiting during the peak season it is essential to pre-book accommodation and flights as they will sell out. The autumn and spring months provide an excellent time to discover the Algarve; the weather is bright and sunny, but without the summertime crowds.

During the winter months Carvoeiro closes down and will feel very quiet, but a small selection of restaurants and bars will remain open. In the winter it is better to visit the larger resort towns, which have a permanent population, such as Albufeira or Lagos. Related articles: Albufeira guide – Lagos guide

Day trips from Carvoeiro

From Carvoeiro there is a number of interesting day trips which include; Silves, Ferragudo and Portimão. Silves is the ancient capital of the Algarve and this glorious past is reflected by the numerous impressive historical monuments, which include the imposing castle, town walls and gothic cathedral.

Ferragudo is a traditional fishing village that overlooks the busy Portimão estuary, while to the south of Ferragudo are glorious sandy beaches.

Portimão is a largely residential city, which has a surprisingly pleasant urban centre, filled with great shopping venues and the characteristic Portuguese charm. During the summer a small ferry connects Portimão to Ferragudo. Related articles: Carvoeiro day trips - Ferragudo day trip – Introduction to Silves – Portimão introduction

Faro airport and travel to Carvoeiro

The main airport of southern Portugal is Faro airport, and is located 64 km to the east of Carvoeiro.

There is very poor public transport from the airport to Carvoeiro, and the time-consuming journey requires three different buses. To travel from the airport to Carvoeiro, we would always recommend either pre-booking a private transfer (€50) or taking a shared minibus transfer (€25) on arriving in Portugal. A taxi hired directly from the airport will be very expensive (€85+), while demand for Uber in the summer is very high.

The most respected transfer company of the Algarve is Yellow Fish, which is routinely used by all expats and long term residents; their transfer costs €49.

Alternatives to Carvoeiro

Here our suggestions for resort towns which are similar to Carvoeiro (a medium sized town, which main focus is tourism and is close to a great beach). Our recommendations are: In the Algarve – Alvor , Praia da Luz , Olhos de Agua and Monte Gordo Around the rest of Portugal – Sesimbra , Cascais , Nazaré , Ericeira , Espinho Yet to be fully discovered by foreign tourists - Vila Nova de Milfontes , Costa Nova (Aveiro) and Vila do Conde

(links to destination guide and open a new tabs)

Warning, please read

There have been a number of sham residential letting websites, which have appeared on the internet, with bogus or copied listings (often of real apartments). These websites look professional (with guarantees and refund policies) and the prices are significantly cheaper. Only ever book an apartment through a trusted website (booking.com, homeaway.co.uk etc) and never pay for accommodation by bank transfer. For more details please see the TripAdvisor forum post: www.tripadvisor.com/../Villas_Algarve.html (link opens new link) Note: This type of scam is not just limited to the Algarve but is found in all major tourist destinations. The Algarve is just ripe for it, as demand for accommodation outstrips supply.

Carvoeiro Portugal

Carvoeiro, Portugal: The Ultimate Guide to Carvoeiro [2024]

Located on a small cove in the central Algarve is the picturesque resort town of Carvoeiro. It’s situated on a small beach which is a stunning break along the dramatic coastline of the Algar Seco . An area of natural beauty made up of cliffs, rock formations and stunning views. Carvoeiro is a great destination if you’re seeking a more relaxed holiday experience, with the full resort facilities but little of the drama that comes with nearby much larger resort towns. The ambience of Carvoeiro is a town of small restaurants and cafes, alfresco dining, and a family friendly beach.

What to See and Do in Carvoeiro?

Most visitors to Carvoeiro are seeking a traditional resort holiday in the Algarve – a great beach, great weather, and great dining, and Carvoeiro offers all of this and more. However, that’s not all there is to the town and wider area. Despite being small you’ll still find exciting trips and activities to pack your day with, as well as access to the wider Algarve region! Traditional towns, hiking, water parks, and boat trips are all within easy reach!

Carvoeiro Street

Praia de Carvoeiro – Carvoeiro Beach

Carvoeiro’s town opens on to one of the most beautiful beaches of the region along this coastline. An enticing stretch of golden sands surrounded by the ochre sandstone cliffs of the Algarve. It’s not vast by any means but has more than enough space to offer two sections, one concessioned with sunbed and parasol rental, and a large free area for anyone to place their towels.

Carvoeiro Beach

Praia de Carvoeiro’s Beach Facilities

  • Lifeguards, during the bathing season (June – September)
  • Toilets and changing rooms
  • Cafés, Restaurants and Bars – There’s a couple of beach bars, and as its so close to the town there’s lots of variety.
  • Watersports and activities like Kayak / SUP rental
  • Tours and tickets, various operators offer boat trips and tours to the surrounding region
  • Wheelchair accessible – ramps directly from the town

As it’s so close to the town, you get the full benefits of the town like being able to buy anything you might have forgotten to bring, and refreshments from local supermarkets.

Carvoeiro Beach

Does Carvoeiro have other beaches?

Carvoeiro has one other beach within a reasonable distance from the town – Praia do Paraíso.  It’s walking distance for active people, following the road west out of town and up the steep hill will lead you to it. From its small car park is a steep set of stairs so this is not an accessible beach either. However, if you’re looking for something a little less busy, and much less commercial it’s a great beach. Just be aware that during hightide the beach can all but disappear. There are no facilities either so it’s not recommended as beach for families or long durations!

In the opposite direction, is Praia do Vale de Centeanes. It’s around 2km by road, or a similar distance by adventurous hike along the beautiful cliffs. Praia do Vale de Centeanes is another stunning beach surrounded by cliffs. The viewpoints of the beach make the walk worth it alone, and at the base of the cliffs you’ll find a bar that’s perfect for refreshments – O Stop. It’s a lovely beach, but if you’re based in Carvoeiro, it’s not the ideal destination for long days on the beach due to the effort involved to get there.

Carvoeiro Algarve

Boat Tours from Carvoeiro

One of the most popular things to do in Carvoeiro is a boat tour along the coast. Carvoeiro is the departing point for many of the major trips that head along the coastline, making their way through stacks, arches and large sea caves. The most famous being Benagil, but if you take a boat trip you’ll find many many others to discover.

Boat trips Algarve

The benefits of departing on a tour from Carvoeiro is that the boats located in Carvoeiro are much smaller – there’s no commercial harbour unlike Portimão or Albufeira. These boats offer tours that get much closer to the caves and sea stacks and really enhance the experience. However, they don’t offer the same level of service – dining, drinks, and sometimes music.

Looking further out to sea and not directly at the coastline, you’ll also be able to find dolphin watching tours. The waters along the coastline here are on a migratory route for dolphins heading to and from the Strait of Gibraltar and the warm Mediterranean waters. There are near guaranteed sightings of dolphins and Carvoeiro is a great place to depart from!

Algar Seco Boat

Here’s a quick list of our favourite tours from Carvoeiro!

  • From Carvoeiro: Benagil Caves and Praia da Marinha Boat Trip
  • Algarve: Carvoerio and Benagil Walking Tour and Cruise

Top Tip : When browsing various tour websites looking for boat tours and trips in the region, it’s really important to make sure to check the departure point is Carvoeiro. The bigger ports of Albufeira and Portimão generally have a much wider variety, and sometimes cheaper selection of tours, but these will rely on you traveling to the marinas yourself.

Forte de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação – Carvoeiro’s Fortress

From the beach, if you head up the steep western road, you’ll soon make your way to Carvoeiro’s fortress. Despite the fortress name, there’s not much of the fortress remaining and from the front it also looks more distinctly like a chapel. Originally the chapel would have been surrounded by the thick walls of a 17 th century fort, built to deter any would be raiders from attacking the town.

Fort Carvoeiro

What remains is a small part of the exterior wall and one of the main portals. It’s a unique focal point, but don’t be fooled by its name, or the sign posts directing you to a ‘fortress’. If you’re interested in visiting fortresses that are much more complete, then nearby Fortaleza de Santa Catarina is a much more complete example open to visitors in Praia da Rocha . From behind the chapel, you’ll also find the start of the Carvoeiro Boardwalk.

Carvoeiro Fortress

Carvoeiro Boardwalk and Algar Seco

The boardwalk officially called the Passadiços do Carvoeiro , is a short but stunning boardwalk along the cliffs of the Algar Seco. It’s here that the Algar Seco is suitable for all ages, and at 570m long it’s a quick and easy walk. Along the way, you’ll be introduced to the flora and fauna of this part of the Algarve through detailed signposts in sections covering the cliff tops, shrubbery, cliffs, and lastly the sea itself.

Carvoeiro Boardwalk

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also take the optional detours to the cliffs and almost the waterfront. This area is called the Algar Seco and it is absolutely stunning! Through several steep sets of staircases, you’ll make your way down to the miradouros. From here you can take the winding paths and explore multiple caves and sea stacks and get an upfront view that’s simply not possible on any of the boat trips and tours.

Algar Seco Carvoeiro

Top tip: There is no shade so your usual sun essentials should be brought with you. If you intend to visit the accessible caves and grottos, then good footwear is also advised. There’s an element of scrambling along rocky pathways to access some of the most beautiful areas.

Day Trips from Carvoeiro

Looking away from the coastline and more inland, Carvoeiro is a great place to explore a more authentic side of the Algarve. Silves is a short drive inland and puts the history of the Algarve front and centre with its imposing castle. Perhaps, you’re more interested in seeing another fishing village like the picturesque Ferragudo with its rows of fisherman’s houses. Alternatively, for those that want to see a more hectic version of the Algarve, the beach resort of Praia da Rocha , it’s bars, clubs and casino are just a short drive away!

How to Get to Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro is around 65km east of Faro Airport, and Faro airport is the main route for the majority of visitors looking to visit the Algarve. Now for the tricky bit, despite its popularity Carvoeiro is underserved when it comes to public transport. The nearest train station is Estombar-Lagoa, which is on the regional line of the Algarve railway system. This regional line connects you to Faro and all major cities in the Algarve. However, Estombar-Lagoa is still 7km from Carvoeiro, and you’ll need to rely on local buses or taxis to get you into Carvoeiro.

The local bus is the 107 that runs from Portimão to Praia do Carvalho, full timetables should be looked up on the Vamus Algarve website. Before making any firm plans based on public transport, we really recommend looking fully at all the latest times and schedules. The combination of bus and train can be used to get to Carvoeiro from pretty much any major town or city in the Algarve or further away.

Alternatively, hire cars and private transfers are available at Faro Airport. If you plan on renting a car, you should read our guide that covers the ins and outs of car rental in the Algarve first!

For a supreme luxury stay then one of the best option’s is Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort . The hotel is 1km from the town centre and feels like it’s located on its own exclusive section of the cliffs. Your Complete Guide to Carvoeiro in the Algarve, Portugal

If you are looking for a new affordable place to go on summer holidays, you may have just found it.

Carvoeiro in the Algarve is a small village in the south of Portugal, right by the ocean. This means you can enjoy some nice days on the beach and also delight yourself with wonderful Portuguese cuisine.

A guide to Carvoeiro holidays

We are going to tell you all about Carvoeiro as it’s not as well known as some other places in the Algarve which means you can have a quieter and more authentic Portuguese holiday.

So let me tell you about Cavoeiro.

Where is Carvoeiro?

Carvoeiro is also known as “Praia do Carvoeiro” (which literally means Carvoeiro Beach). This village can be found somewhere in the centre of the Algarve , more to the west side if we were to be more precise.

It belongs to Lagoa, which is in Faro . There, you can find the most typical Portuguese beach there is – with lots of rocks and reefs surrounding the sandy beach area.

How to get to Carveiro, Algarve

Let’s say it how it is: if you can, go there by car. It is indeed the most expensive way there is, but it’s also the fastest and most comfortable of all. Getting to Carvoeiro in the Algarve can be difficult by public transport, although it is possible.

In a most “general view”, Carvoeiro belongs to Faro, which can be reached by train from Braga , Porto , Coimbra or Lisbon . You will need to change trains, but you can get to Carvoeiro like that.

However, even if you leave Faro’s station, you will need to get in a car to get to Carvoeiro beach and that journey can take up to one hour. There aren’t direct trains from one place to the other, but you can take the bus if you wish.

Buses leave many times during the day and are operated by Eva bus company. They can take up to one hour and a half between Faro and Carvoeiro and often cost around  €7.

If you come from other countries, there are a lot of plane routes coming to Faro International Airport (also known as the Algarve Airport)

When is the best time to visit Carvoeiro

Without question, the best time to visit Carvoeiro in the Algarve is during the summer. The Algarve is known to be a perfect spot to catch some sun and enjoy hot summer days by the beach.

The rest of the year is also enjoyable, but not as warm as in summer months. You can find dry days and nice weather in other months.

History of Carvoeiro: All You Should Know

Carvoeiro, a charming fishing village located in the Algarve region of Portugal, has become a popular tourist destination over the years. This picturesque town is characterized by its white-washed buildings perched on golden cliffs, with gentle hills surrounding the area. The small stretch of beach located in the heart of the town serves as a focal point, while holiday villas extend across the hillsides beyond.

The history of Carvoeiro dates back centuries, when the area experienced numerous military and pirate attacks. The town has witnessed several naval battles, such as the one in 1544 between a fleet of ships commanded by Dom Pedro da Cunha and the Turkish corsair named Xarramet. This historical context has contributed to the unique charm that attracts tourists to the area today.

As a traditional fishing village, Carvoeiro has maintained its authenticity while adapting to the needs of the increasing number of tourists. Despite its popularity, the town remains relatively underserved by public transport, with the closest train station being Estombar-Lagoa. However, this lack of accessibility only adds to the appeal of this hidden gem in the Algarve region.

Visitors to Carvoeiro can expect a high concentration of shops, bars, and restaurants, all within close proximity to the beach. The town’s quaint atmosphere, combined with its interesting history, make it an ideal destination for those looking to explore a unique and captivating part of Portugal’s Algarve region.

When is the Best Time to Visit Carvoeiro

We love Carvoeiro during autumn and spring but the most popular time is summer, from late May to October, for sunny beach days. Peak summer months of June, July, and August are great for family vacations with many activities. For a quieter experience, consider May, early June, September, or October.

  • Summer (June to August) is hot and sunny, ideal for beach outings.
  • Late spring (May, early June) and early autumn (September, October) offer milder weather, perfect for exploring.
  • Winter months ( November to February) are cooler with some rainy days, suitable for fewer crowds.

Where to Stay in Carvoeiro

If you are staying just for a week or two, the best hotel in Carvoeiro is definitely  Quinta Nova Vale Del Rey , where  they have a beautiful pool and tasty breakfast. The hotel is close to one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve –  Praia da Marinha.

What is the Best Way to Get Around Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro, with its quaint charm and scenic views, has always been a delightful retreat for us. Over the years, we’ve found that the best way to unravel the beauty of this town and the surrounding Algarve region is by hitting the road. We strongly recommend renting a car, as car rentals are quite affordable in Portugal.

Renting a Car Is the Best Option

No matter if you land in Lisbon, Porto, or Faro, you’ll find a plethora of car rental options awaiting at each airport. Driving through the picturesque landscapes, quaint towns, and along the golden beaches of the Algarve has been nothing short of a visual feast. However, a word to the wise: adhering to local driving rules is key to ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey.

Carvoeiro’s narrow streets and limited parking can be challenging during summer season, but we found that parking our rental car at a designated car park near the town’s center or beach was a convenient workaround.

Public Transport

While Carvoeiro lacks direct access to train services, the nearest train station is the Estombar-Lagoa station, which is approximately 8 km away. From there, regional train services connect to Lisbon, Porto, and Faro – among other destinations, allowing you to explore various parts of Portugal.

Local buses are available in Carvoeiro, but the network may not sufficiently cover all the popular tourist sites. Nonetheless, public transport is an affordable option for travellers on a budget. For a more flexible and convenient experience, consider renting a car or using taxi services in Carvoeiro and the surrounding Algarve area.

Best Things To Do and See in Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro is a picturesque destination with a variety of scenic landmarks and beautiful beaches to visit.

1) Benagil Cave

We’ve always found a special kind of excitement in Carvoeiro, but our boat ride to Benagil Cave last February was truly magical. Despite the cool 20°C weather, the journey on the water was exhilarating.

The cave, with its majestic dome and natural skylight, was a sight to behold. The tour didn’t stop at just the cave, it also included an amazing dolphin watching experience that left us in awe. We booked the tour through GetYourGuide. ☺️

2) Algar seco

When my mum came over for a week-long visit, we took her to Algar Seco, a captivating spot not far from the town centre. As we strolled along the coastal paths, the intriguing rock formations, sculpted by years of erosion, offered us a serene yet fascinating walk. It was a simple, beautiful adventure that added a special touch to our visit, making our time together in Carvoeiro even more memorable.

3) Praia de Carvoeiro

The beaches in Carvoeiro are beautiful and varied and provide an excellent array of options for visitors. Head to Praia de Carvoeiro, the town’s central beach, which is perfect for a relaxing day on the golden sands. With its whitewashed buildings and picturesque views, it’s an ideal spot for soaking up the sun and witnessing the vibrant local ambience.

4) Praia do Vale de Centeanes

Praia do Vale de Centeanes was just a 20-minute walk from where we were staying. I made habit of running to this beach every morning. It’s surrounded by big cliffs, which makes it feel like a hidden gem. There’s also a bar right on the beach, making it our favorite spot to watch the sunset. ☺️

5) Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha is where I first fell in love with Algarve, its crystal-clear waters and incredible rock formations capturing my heart instantly . Over the years, we’ve made many trips back to this enchanting spot, especially to watch the sunset. The way the colors of the dusk dance on the waters is a spectacle that never gets old.

When we first visited, there were no regulations on the number of people on the beach, and parking was free. Luckily, we visit during the off-season, so we continue to enjoy this beach without any fees and with fewer people around. However, we’ve heard that in the summer, it can get quite crowded.

6) Praia do Paraíso

Finally, Praia do Paraíso is a small, hidden cove that offers visitors a more intimate beach experience. Surrounded by rocky cliffs and lush vegetation, it’s a secluded oasis perfect for those seeking tranquillity and picturesque views.

7) Alfanzina Lighthouse

Our holiday home in Carvoeiro was blissfully close to the Alfanzina Lighthouse, a landmark we grew fond of. It became our little tradition to take our dog for a walk to this iconic lighthouse, soaking in the local charm along the way.

Perched on the Algarvean cliffs, it has been a silent guardian over the Atlantic since 1920, its light guiding sailors through the night. We’d often imagine the life of the lighthouse keeper who once lived in the annex, surrounded by endless ocean views. Now, every Wednesday from 14:00-17:00, its doors open to the public, sharing a slice of Algarve’s maritime history.

The lighthouse is also a scenic point on The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, blending natural beauty with a touch of nostalgia . Each visit feels like stepping back in time, a personal journey we looked forward to on our escapes to Carvoeiro.

8) Kayaking

Embrace your adventurous side and take advantage of the various water sports available in Carvoeiro. Kayaking is a popular activity, allowing you to explore the numerous sea caves and beaches up close. Some tours even offer a 2-hour kayak adventure through the caves of Benagil, providing a unique experience amidst the majestic waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you prefer land-based activities, the golf courses in and around Carvoeiro cater to all skill levels. The picturesque settings and challenging courses are sure to please. Tee off under the warm Algarve sun and enjoy a relaxing yet invigorating golfing experience in Carvoeiro.

10) Surfing

While Carvoeiro might not be the prime spot for riding the waves, the quest for surfing led us to a nearby haven in Lagoa, the King Neptunos Surf School . Born out of a 25-year love affair with surfing, King Neptunos has been sharing the stoke and culture of this exhilarating sport since 2013.

It’s not just a school, but a community bonded over the thrill of surfing, accredited by the Portuguese Federation of Surf and Tourism of Portugal, and licensed by the Captaincy of the Port of Lagos.

11) Thai Massage

In the heart of Carvoeiro lies a sanctuary of tranquility that we’ve come to cherish over our visits – the local Thai massage center. It’s become a delightful ritual for us, to immerse in the ancient healing art of Thai massage at least once every time we’re in town. The ambiance in the center transports us to a realm of serenity, where skilled therapists work their magic, easing away the knots of stress with each rhythmic stretch and knead.

Our favorite spot to get thai massage in Carvoeiro is Senses Thaimassage Beauty.

12) Portugese Pottery

A trip to the Algarve is incomplete without immersing oneself in the region’s rich ceramic tradition. There are not that far from Carvoeiro. A good starting point is the renowned Porches Pottery , where you can witness the creation of classic Portuguese pottery, and perhaps enjoy a coffee amidst the summer breeze.

Another gem not to be missed is Olaria Pequena , a quaint workshop where a father-daughter duo spins magic with clay. We adore their unique creations and have several pieces adorning our home, showcasing a blend of traditional and contemporary craftsmanship.

Be warned though, a visit might tempt you to splurge as it did with us – we find ourselves leaving with cherished pottery and lighter wallets every time. 😁 Their pottery may not be traditional, but it carries a unique charm that captures the heart.

If you’re basing yourself in Carvoeiro, a day trip to Lagos and its enchanting surrounding beaches is a must-do. The journey from Carvoeiro to Lagos unveils a different facet of the Algarve, one that’s rich in maritime history nestled amidst quaint cobbled streets.

Our beach explorations led us to some magical shores. Among our favorites were Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo. Praia Dona Ana, with its stunning cliffs and clear waters, felt like stepping into a postcard, while the secluded charm of Praia do Camilo, accessible by a scenic wooden staircase, was nothing short of a serene retreat.

The awe-inspiring Ponta da Piedade is another spot we can’t help but recommend. Though not a beach, the breathtaking views of rugged coastline and the vast Atlantic from this point are surreal. The natural arches and the tranquil boat rides exploring the caves and grottoes along the coast were moments that got etched in our memories.

14) Ferragudo

Ferragudo, a traditional fishing village, retains its original allure and sits quite close to Carvoeiro. Its narrow, winding streets and picturesque waterfront square make it a wonderful exploration spot for anyone staying in Carvoeiro.

It’s a perfect destination to delve into the local culture and savor the delightful cuisine, offering a genuine taste of the region’s heritage. Venturing to Ferragudo adds a quaint and authentic flavor to your Carvoeiro getaway, allowing you to soak in the serene and rustic ambiance of the Algarve.

During our stays in Carvoeiro, we always made it a point to visit Silves, a historic town that charmed us with its impressive Moorish castle, known as Castelo dos Mouros, and its ancient red sandstone cathedral.

The town’s enchanting atmosphere and architecture have a way of whisking you back in time. We fell so much in love with Silves that this time, we’ve decided to soak in its old-world charm by spending an entire month here. Each day unveils a new facet of its rich history, making our Algarve experience all the more enriching.

16) Albufeira

Venturing further east from Carvoeiro, Albufeira unfolds as one of the largest and liveliest towns in the Algarve, with a charm that’s distinctly its own. It’s not just the bustling array of restaurants, bars, and clubs that captivate visitors, but also its stunning beaches that promise endless stretches of golden sands and azure waters.

These beautiful beaches form a picturesque backdrop to a town brimming with life. Besides lounging under the sun, the allure of dolphin watching and engaging boat tours add to the coastal magic, making Albufeira a vibrant blend of leisure, adventure, and natural beauty.

17) Portimão

Portimão, nestled a short drive away from Carvoeiro, is a lively coastal haven offering more than just a casual seaside retreat. Its sandy beaches beckon for relaxation under the sun, while the bustling marina adds a touch of elegance to the town’s scenic coastline.

For those with a penchant for retail therapy, the excellent shopping venues are a treasure trove of finds. But it’s the call of adventure that truly sets Portimão apart, especially for water sports enthusiasts. The exhilarating options of jet skiing, windsurfing, and sailing on the sparkling waters turn the town into a playground for the adventurous at heart, making every visit a blend of serene and exciting escapades.

Tavira is a charming town located further east in the Algarve. It’s famous for its stunning Roman bridge, historic churches, and elegant Moorish architecture. A visit to Tavira provides a delightful change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the larger towns.

Best Restaurants in Carvoeiro

We are vegetarians, so finding restaurants with vegetarian or vegan options is important for us. We usually check online to find such places. Our top picks in Carvoeiro are Organic , Earth Shop & Cafe , but the crown jewel is Chef’s Kitchen , where we had a memorable Valentine’s dinner last year. ❤️

We have a soft spot for Indian cuisine, and Carvoeiro didn’t disappoint. Our favorite spot for a curry fix is Gurkha Kitchen Nepalese & Indian Cuisine , which stands out as probably the best Indian food haven in town.

Best Cafes in Carvoeiro

If you’re a coffee aficionado like us, finding that perfect latte or flat white can be a bit of a quest in Carvoeiro. However, our search led us to a charming spot right by Carvoeiro beach named Levels. This place is a gem for coffee lovers, serving up a great cup alongside an amazing brunch menu.

Carvoeiro, Algarve, Portugal.

The history of Carvoeiro as a fishing port stretches back to Roman and Moorish times. In the medieval period the area escaped major pirate attacks and remained a sleepy backwater until the onset of mass tourism in the Algarve from the 1960s.

Visitors with a hire car can easily run out to two nearby amusement parks. Sand City Lagoa bills itself as the biggest sand sculpture park in the world. Slide & Splash is one of the Algarve's several water parks and great fun for the kids. Indeed the water park has been providing aquatic family fun for over 30 years. Carvoeiro tourism guide, how to get there and where to stay

Carvoeiro, Algarve, Portugal

Carvoeiro was once a typical Algarvian fishing village but has become a relaxed resort town and is home to a sizable British community. It preserves much of the natural scenery and some of the charm of a traditional village, but the fishing boats on its main beach are now used to take tourists around the coast. It’s a very small town but the perfect base to visit the splendid beaches of the Lagoa region. It appeals to all kinds of travelers, from families to couples on a romantic getaway. Families are the majority in July and August, but it’s mostly couples of all ages that visit at other times of the year (especially in June and September). In autumn and winter it’s very quiet, but still attracts mature visitors from northern Europe, looking for sunnier weather.

Carvoeiro, Algarve

The focus point is the small but very picturesque beach right in the center. It’s surrounded by white villas and low-rise apartment buildings perched on sandstone cliffs, and there are many restaurants, cafés, bars and shops in the vicinity. It’s lively in the summer, but not a “party town” like Albufeira . People come here to relax and to explore some of the best beaches and most stunning rock formations and caves in Algarve , like the Benagil Cave. Within walking distance of the center is also the region’s most scenic hiking trail, known as the Seven Hanging Valleys. In fact, Carvoeiro is a walker’s paradise, and there’s even a coastal boardwalk in the center, leading to the fascinating rock formations of Algar Seco.

Nearby are the Slide & Splash and Aqualand water parks, with their slides, pools, and entertainment for the whole family.

Things to See and Do in Carvoeiro

Algar Seco, Carvoeiro, Algarve

The winds and waves joined forces over thousands of years and created a curious rocky landscape in Carvoeiro that looks like the surface of the moon. There are fantastic rock formations and rock pools, and a cave with “windows” opening to a picture-perfect view of the sea. The fascinating site can be reached from the center of town via a boardwalk, which offers sweeping views of the coast. Sit on one of the benches and take it all in. It’s the best sunset spot in town.

Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, Algarve

Seven Hanging Valleys Trail

You don’t have to be a keen walker to enjoy this trail over the cliffs by Carvoeiro. It starts at the beach of Vale Centeanes (see below) and ends at Praia da Marinha, which many will tell you is the must-see beach in Algarve. In between, you pass by the beaches of Carvalho and Benagil. In total, it covers close to 6km (just over 3.5 miles), and offers some truly breathtaking views .

Benagil Sea Cave, Algarve

Benagil Sea Cave

This spectacular cave has become the most popular tourist attraction in Algarve . It’s best accessed from Benagil Beach, which is 15 minutes by car from Carvoeiro. Boat tours also depart from Vale Centeanes Beach, which is within walking distance of the center of town. Sometimes there are also boats departing from Praia do Carvoeiro. The only way to reach it is by boat, kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Technically, you can also go swimming from Benagil Beach, but that’s not recommended.

Praia do Carvoeiro, Algarve

Praia do Carvoeiro

With its fishing boats on the sand and white houses perched on the cliff, this is one of Algarve’s most picturesque and photographed beaches . It’s quite small, but perfect to relax after a day around the coast, exploring the famous caves and bigger beaches. Its central location, with a number of restaurants and shops behind it, give it a lively atmosphere at any time of day.

Praia do Paraíso, Carvoeiro, Algarve

Praia do Paraíso

This small, sheltered beach is hidden down a long staircase. Very few people come here, and it almost disappears at high tide. However, when Praia do Carvoeiro is just too crowded, it’s a peaceful alternative.

Praia de Vale Centeanes, Carvoeiro, Algarve

Praia de Vale Centeanes

It takes 20 to 25 minutes to walk to this beach from the center of town, but all you have to do is follow the main road (by car, you’re there in just 5 minutes). It’s one of the main departure points of the boat tours to the Benagil Cave, as well as the starting point of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail. It can get crowded in the summer, as there are many apartments above it. It’s sheltered from the wind by the tall, golden cliffs surrounding it.

Carvoeiro Coast

In addition to the three beaches in central Carvoeiro listed above, you can explore the wonderful beaches of the Lagoa region. How to Get to Carvoeiro

From Faro Airport : If you’re going to Carvoeiro straight from the airport in Faro, a pre-booked transfer is the most convenient option. The driver waits for you at the arrivals hall and you don’t have to worry about final costs. The cost of a taxi varies, but could be over 85 euros, depending on the time and day (it’s more expensive at night, weekends, and public holidays). Uber should be slightly cheaper (between 50 and 65 euros). The journey by public transportation requires three different buses with poor connections, so that’s not really a viable alternative. These are the best transfer services from/to the airport to/from Carvoeiro: - From Faro Airport to Carvoeiro - From Carvoeiro to Faro Airport

By Car : Carvoeiro is 50 minutes from Faro and 35 minutes from Albufeira, heading west on highway A22. The closest major town is Portimão, about 20 minutes away. From Lisbon, the journey takes 2 hours and 30 minutes.

However, this is a very infrequent service, with just half a dozen departures on weekdays and only a couple on weekends. There’s also bus 52 from Alvor, Praia da Rocha (Portimão) and Armação de Pêra. Carvoeiro is a cluster of whitewashed buildings atop gold-tinged cliffs and backed by gentle hills. Shops, bars and restaurants rise steeply from the small arc of beach that is the focus of the town, with holiday villas sprawling across the hillsides beyond. It's prettier and more laid-back than many of the Algarve's bigger resorts, but its diminutive size means that it gets full to bursting in summer.

The History of Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro is a small village in the western Algarve. According to historical sources, the name of the village derives from “Caboiere”, an old name for a fishing village of the Arab-medieval period.

There is evidence pointing to the Roman presence in the village, as well as an extensive maritime activity. The area where Vila do Carvoeiro is located has a long history of military and pirate attacks, having witnessed a series of naval combats, among which stands out the battle of 1544 between a fleet of ships commanded by Dom Pedro da Cunha and the Turkish corsair named Xarramet.

Carvoeiro - Algarve Fun

The town is built on cliffs and hills, and it is surrounded by beautiful beaches, such as Praia de Carvoeiro, Praia da Marinha, and Praia do Carvalho. Carvoeiro has plenty of things to see and do, making it an ideal holiday destination. Some of the top attractions include:

Overall, Carvoeiro is a gem in the Algarve region, with its beauty and natural features making it one of my personal favorites. With its clear waters, golden sand beaches, and steep cliffs, it has become a preferred spot for many visitors to Portugal’s Algarve region.

Beaches in Carvoeiro, Portugal

Any visit to the beautiful town of Carvoeiro must include the stunning beaches that surround it! With their golden sand, clear water, and breathtaking cliffs, these beaches are a must-visit for anyone traveling to the Algarve region.

Here are some of my favorite beaches in Carvoeiro.

Praia de Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro Beach from viewpoint

The Praia de Carvoeiro is the main beach in town, and one of the most beautiful beaches in Algarve . With its calm waters and soft sand, it is the perfect place to relax and soak up the sun. The beach is surrounded by restaurants and bars, making it easy to grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink. I highly recommend taking a stroll along the boardwalk, which offers stunning views of the coastline.

There are viewpoints overlooking the beach on either side, where you can snap pictures of the picturesque town and its beachfront.

Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha

If you’re looking for a postcard-perfect beach, look no further than Praia da Marinha. This beach is famous for its clear blue waters, golden sand, and impressive rock formations. It is consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

If you want only to see the beach and coastline, you can take a boat tour which includes the Benagil Cave.  But for the best visit, drive or take a taxi and spend a few hours here, especially in the afternoon for sunset.

Sunset at Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha can also be seen on the coastal walk of the “Seven Hanging Valleys Trail.  It is also a perfect spot for sunset with several viewpoints overlooking the beach.

There is a small snack bar here on the beach that takes cash only.  A parking lot is available as well.

Praia do Paraíso

Praia do Paraiso - Carvoeiro Portugal

Next up, my personal favorite: Praia do Paraiso. This beach is named after the Portuguese word for paradise, and it’s not hard to see why. The sand is soft and golden, and the water is clear and calm. The beach is surrounded by cliffs, giving it a secluded and intimate feel.

There is a restaurant overlooking the beach here, Mar d’Fora , which has fantastic sunset views and excellent seafood.  (I’m allergic to shrimp and looked longingly at every dish of piri piri prawns that went by, destined for other tables!)

Praia do Paraiso is especially pretty at golden hour.  It is a short walk up from the town center.  There are concrete steps built into the cliffside to access the beach level.  A small parking lot is available, shared with the restaurant here.

Praia do Paraiso

Praia do Carvalho

Praia do Carvalho

For an even more secluded beach experience, head to Praia do Carvalho. This small beach is tucked away between cliffs, and is a bit more challenging to get to. The sand is golden, and the water is crystal clear, making it the perfect spot for swimming and snorkeling.

Access to Praia do Carvalho is via a tunnel with stairs that are carved through the rocky cliffs.

Parking is available in a lot above the beach, and there is a small restaurant, O Carcaça. (Although it is not very well-rated, so I recommend bringing your own snacks.)

Praia de Vale Covo

Praia de Vale Covo

Praia de Vale Covo is another small and secluded beach that is perfect for a peaceful day in the sun. This is another beach backed by high cliffs, with soft golden sands. The views from above are stunning!

Praia de Valo Covo is only accessible during low to medium tides, as the beach disappears entirely at high tide. There is also a cave that you can swim into at low tide.

It’s a bit tough to get to this beach: there are steps, but the last part is a scramble down the rocks.  Wear shoes to get to and back up from the beach.

The Tivoli Carvoeiro resort is here, but the beach is public.  There are no facilities on the beach, so be sure to bring everything you need for the day.

Praia de Vale Centeanes

Praia de Vale de Centianes

Praia de Vale Centeanes is the next beach down the coast from Praia de Vale Covo. With its golden sandy shores, high dramatic cliffs, and crystal-clear waters, it offers a less-busy and relaxing setting for beachgoers.

There is a small restaurant here, Restaurante O Stop , with great views. Limited parking is available along the road to the beach.

Benagil Beach and Cave

photo of Praia de Benagil beach in Algarve Portugal

Benagil Beach and its adjoining Benagil Cave is a natural wonder located along the Algarve coastline in Portugal. The beach is a popular spot for sunbathing and spending the day at a beach club.

However, the true highlight is the Benagil Cave, a sea cave with a cathedral-like dome and an natural skylight that allows sunlight to filter through. It’s best to visit the cave only by boat; the surf as well as the number of boats in the area make it unsafe for swimmers or kayakers.

At the beach, you can also visit the top rated Benagil Beach Club which offers food, cocktails, a sparkling pool and loungers.  (There is also a Benagil Beach Bar – less well-reviewed and without a pool!)

Parking is available in a lot above the cliffs.  Although this adds a bit of a walk, I recommend it instead of parking along the steep road down to the beach.

Benagil Beach

More Things to Do in Carvoeiro, Portugal

When it comes to activities in Carvoeiro, there is no shortage of options. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day on the beach or an adrenaline-filled adventure, I’ve got tips for the best things to do in Carvoeiro.

Boat Tours and Caves

boat tours in Carvoeiro

A boat tour is a must-do activity in Carvoeiro! You will be able to explore the beautiful coastline, caves, and rock formations that make this area so unique. Some of the caves are only accessible by boat, so this is a great opportunity to see them up close.

The most popular tour is to Praia da Marinha and Benagil Cave.  This is the tour I chose, which left directly from Carvoeiro Beach:

If you’d like to take a kayak tour that begins from Benagil Beach, here are two options with great reviews and easy online booking:

First Inside Benagil Cave – Sunrise or Sunset

Benagil Cave Safety

During peak season and busy tourist times, Benagil Cave gets very overcrowded with boats and the surf can sometimes be rough. For this reason, I do not recommend swimming or paddleboarding to the cave. Kayaking here is best done in the very early morning, before the boat tours begin.

Coastal Walks

Carvoeiro Boardwalk - Algar Seco

If you’re looking to explore the natural beauty of Carvoeiro, a coastal walk is the perfect way to do so! With its dramatic cliffs and stunning ocean views, Carvoeiro’s coastline is a hiker’s paradise. Here are two of the best coastal walks in Carvoeiro that you won’t want to miss:

Carvoeiro Boardwalk + Algar Seco

The Carvoeiro Boardwalk is a short and easy coastal walk that takes you along the town’s rugged coastline. This boardwalk starts at the town center and takes you 1 mile along the cliffs to the nearby Algar Seco.

tourist map of carvoeiro portugal

Walking along the boardwalk allows you to explore the different paths and tunnels that lead to hidden caves and pools.  Along the way, you’ll see sweeping views of the ocean and coast, as well as colorful boats bobbing in the water below.

The Algar Seco is a series of rock formations that have been eroded by the sea, creating a unique landscape. The most famous stop is at the end of the trail: a cave called “A Boneca” (The Doll).

Inside A Boneca there are two eroded natural windows with a view to the ocean.  Legends say from the water, this cave looks like a doll with two eyes peering over the sea – hence its name!

A Boneca cave

A Boneca is a very popular photo spot during the summer months.  You can also have lunch, dinner or drinks at the Restaurante Boneca Bar here (be sure to check their hours during low season).

A few parking spaces are available on the road at the restaurant, if you prefer to drive.

Carvoeiro Boardwalk route on AllTrails

Seven Hanging Valleys Trail

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is a longer coastal walk that takes you along some of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the Algarve region. Forte de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação

Forte de Nossa Senhora da Encarnacao detail

Forte de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação is the remains of a historic fortress built in the 17th century to defend against pirates and invaders. The chapel here, Our Lady of the Incarnation, was almost completely destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The fortress and chapel were restored, but later fell into ruin again over the centuries.

Since then, the chapel has again been restored and is now used as a daycare. The site has little of the original fortress remaining. Still, you can stop here along the Carvoeiro Boardwalk trail for photos and ocean views, making it a great spot to learn about history and enjoy beautiful sunsets.

Dining in Carvoeiro, Portugal

When it comes to dining in Carvoeiro, there are plenty of options to choose from. Whether you’re looking for local cuisine or international flavors, you’ll find something to satisfy your appetite.

restaurants and dining in Carvoeiro

Local Food and Drink

One of the best things about dining in Carvoeiro is the chance to try traditional Portuguese dishes. Seafood is of course a staple of the local cuisine, and you’ll find fresh catches of the day at many restaurants.

Some of the most popular dishes include grilled sardines, octopus salad, and cataplana (a seafood stew). Don’t forget to try a glass of Vinho Verde, a refreshing Portuguese white wine that pairs perfectly with seafood.

Restaurants

Carvoeiro is home to many excellent restaurants, ranging from casual beachside cafes to upscale fine dining establishments. Reservations can be needed for the busy season, so pop in to reserve a table for an upcoming evening. Keep in mind that restaurants also might be closed one or two nights each week for staff days off.

In general, you’ll find the best restaurants aren’t beachfront, but it is really nice to dine right on the beach in the evenings!  Note also that some of the smaller places might take cash only.

Here are a few of my top picks:

  • Gurkha Kitchen : This Nepalese restaurant serves up delicious curries and momos in a cozy atmosphere.
  • Happy’s : Local favorite serving Portuguese dishes, seafood and fish and chips; cash only, and reservations are usually needed.
  • Bon Bon : For a special occasion, head to this Michelin-starred restaurant for an unforgettable dining experience.
  • Tapas da Vila : Friendly, family-run tapas and wine bar overlooking the beach.
  • Le Cro Portugal : Small restaurant serving tapas and wine. Temporarily closed.
  • Pani : Top-rated Indian restaurant with great service and views overlooking the beach.

Silves is a historic town just a short drive from Carvoeiro. It was once the capital of the Algarve and is home to a beautiful castle that dates back to the 8th century.

The castle is well-preserved and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The town also has a charming historic center with narrow streets and traditional architecture.

Best Time to Visit Carvoeiro, Portugal

Restaurante a Boneca

Carvoeiro is a popular destination year-round, but the best time to visit depends on your preferences. The summer months (June-August) are the busiest and most expensive, with high temperatures and lots of crowds.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed and affordable trip, consider visiting in the spring (March-May) or fall (September-November). These months offer milder temperatures, fewer crowds, and lower prices.

Weather and Seasons

Summer (june to august).

  • High Tourist Season
  • Average Temperature: 75°F to 86°F (24°C to 30°C)

Carvoeiro’s summer is the peak tourist season, attracting a large number of visitors from all over the world. With warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the stunning beaches and take part in outdoor activities. However, it’s essential to keep in mind that the summer months can be quite crowded, and accommodation and activity prices may be higher.

Fall (September to November)

  • Shoulder Season
  • Average Temperature: 68°F to 79°F (20°C to 26°C)

Fall is a delightful time to visit Carvoeiro, as the weather remains pleasant, and the crowds start to thin out. The sea is often still warm enough for swimming, and you can enjoy exploring the town and nearby attractions without the summer rush. Plus, hotel rates and tour prices are generally more budget-friendly during this time.

Winter (December to February)

  • Average Temperature: 54°F to 63°F (12°C to 17°C)

Winter in Carvoeiro is mild, making it an attractive option for travelers seeking a quieter and more relaxed experience. While the temperatures are cooler, it rarely gets freezing, and you can still enjoy outdoor activities during the day. However, keep in mind that some restaurants and attractions might have reduced hours or closures during the low season.

Spring (March to May)

  • Average Temperature: 61°F to 72°F (16°C to 22°C)

Spring is another ideal time to visit Carvoeiro, as the weather starts to warm up, and the town comes to life with colorful blooms and festivals. It’s a perfect season for hiking, exploring the coastal trails, and enjoying the natural beauty of the area. The shoulder season offers a great balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

Getting to Carvoeiro, Portugal

Viewpoint over Carvoeiro Beach

Getting to Carvoeiro is relatively easy, with several transportation options available depending on your preferences and budget. Here’s a breakdown of how to get to Carvoeiro by bus, train, and car.

If you’re traveling from Lisbon or Faro, taking a bus to Carvoeiro is a convenient and affordable option. There are several bus companies that offer routes to Carvoeiro, including EVA Transportes, Rede Expressos, and FlixBus. Prices and schedules vary depending on the time of year and the company you choose, but you can expect to pay around €20-€30 for a one-way ticket.

While there is no train station in Carvoeiro, you can take a train to the nearby town of Lagoa and then transfer to a bus or taxi to reach Carvoeiro. The train journey from Lisbon or Faro to Lagoa takes approximately 2-3 hours, and tickets can be purchased online or at the train station. From Lagoa, you can take a bus or taxi to Carvoeiro, which is only a short distance away.

If you prefer to travel by car, renting a car is a great option to explore the Algarve region at your own pace. Car rental companies are available at both Lisbon and Faro airports, and it’s a straightforward drive to Carvoeiro via the A22 motorway. The journey from Lisbon takes approximately 2.5 hours, while the journey from Faro takes only 45 minutes.

Driving in Portugal - rental cars

Car Rental in Portugal

Thinking of renting a car for your trip? I’ve driven in Portugal many times and find it relatively easy, except in cities where roads can be narrow and parking limited! Another issue is that car rental agencies sometimes try to add on extra fees at the pickup counter or damage charges at the end of your trip. My last few trips I’ve booked with Zest, a car rental aggregator, to find the best availability and pricing. It’s also another level of customer service in case of issues, plus the agencies want to keep their good star rating on the platform. Be sure to read recent reviews from other travelers about their experiences with individual companies, but Zest is the website that I use and recommend for renting cars in Portugal. ⫸ Search Portugal rental cars on Zest

Carvoeiro, a charming fishing village on the golden coastline of the Algarve region, is rich in history and natural beauty. This present-day town sought after by tourists from all over the world was once a place for frequent pirate and military assaults, which often had some ongoing naval battles fought off the shore.

This former humble fishing hamlet has evolved graciously into a charming town that offers the Algarvian charm together with modern comforts. Its rugged coastline with dramatic limestone cliffs, picturesque golden beaches, unique rock formations, and the azure embrace of the Atlantic Ocean makes it a must-visit place on your trip to the Algarve region.

Is a Day Trip Sufficient to See Carvoeiro?

Well, it would be perfect to spend a night in one of the cozy rentals in Carvoeiro (I have listed the best stays for you later in the end). It could also be an excellent base location to explore the Algarve region if you rent a car. However, Carvoeiro may not be the ideal base location if you use public transport and taxis like we did. Or if you have only a few days to explore this region (I would at least recommend spending 4 days in the Algarve), then a day trip will be sufficient to explore everything this charming town has to offer.

One day is perfect for exploring this part of the Algarve region, but if you are interested in doing one or more of the hikes, you might need a little more time than that.

A few buildings overlooking Praia de Carvoeiro in Carvoeiro, Algarve.

How to Reach Carvoeiro?

Carvoeiro is around 62 km from  Faro International Airport  and about an hour’s drive by car. It takes approximately  30 – 40 minutes  to reach Carvoeiro by car from  Lagos  and  Albufeira .

Public Transport

Traveling only by public transport to explore the Algarve might be challenging, but it is possible with some planning. Always check the bus timing in advance as they are less frequent. Reaching Carvoeiro requires you to take a transfer to Lagoa or Parchal (the bus stop next to Ferragudo Train station), depending on whether you are starting from Faro, Albufeira, or Lagos.

Tip! This is how we traveled to Carvoeiro from Lagos. This can apply to any base location like Albufeira, Portimão, or Faro. Check for the train timings to get to the closest train station and take a taxi so you need not wait long for your bus. For reaching Carvoeiro, the nearest station is  Estombar-Lagoa,  which has connections from all major base locations. The taxi to Carvoeiro from Estombar-Lagoa takes around 7-8 Eur.

The Estombar Lago train station in Lagoa, Algarve.

Good to know! If you are taking the train from a smaller station like  Estombar-Lagoa,  you might not find any ticket vending machine or a ticket office where you can purchase the ticket. Do not worry! As soon as you board the train, look for a conductor and buy the ticket on board. Only cash is accepted when purchasing the ticket on board, so carry some. If you cannot get to the conductor, check for a notice stuck near the train’s doors with a telephone number to call and inform that you need to purchase your tickets on board.

How to Get Around Carvoeiro?

You can explore this town mostly by foot and boat tours to nearby places, so you don’t need to worry about public transport. However, if you are driving, I suggest you park near one of the main beaches or during your stay and explore the place on foot to enjoy an immersive experience.

Best Things to Do on Your Day Trip to Carvoeiro

Let’s dive in and explore the best things to do in Carvoeiro.

1. Soak Up the Sun in Praia De Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro’s main beach is nestled between two cliffs upon which the town’s houses are perched, spreading all around the beach and making it easily accessible. The tourists and the locals love this beach as it has all the facilities from sun beds to the bars and restaurants so close by. The view of the town from the beach is lovely, and you could just lie there on the sand and enjoy the ocean breeze.

Tip!   Try to visit this beach first thing in the day as it tends to get crowded, and it is not a very big beach either.

2. Capture the Views of the Town

You can get the perfect view of Carvoeiro from the cliffs on either side of the beach, and they are both so beautiful.

Miradouro da Senhora da Encarnação

This is the viewpoint located on top of the cliff on the left side of the beach. You can easily access this viewpoint by walking uphill on the road or by taking the stairs from the beach. You can see the entire town of Carvoeiro and the beach from up there. The views are simply spectacular.

The view of Carvoeiro from a cliff.

Alto da Praia do Carvoeiro

This is the viewpoint from the cliff on the right side of the beach. This view is as beautiful as the other view and gives a different perspective. If you have time, try to do both (it wouldn’t take much time). You can reach this viewpoint by just walking up the road on the right side for around  170 meters  from the beach.

3. Visit the Forte de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação

The Fort of Our Lady of the Incarnation is a small fortification in Carvoeiro built in 1675. It was mostly destroyed by the massive earthquake that shook Portugal in 1755, and currently, only the  Chapel of Our Lady of the Incarnation  exists here. You could also see a small arch, which is what is left of the former fortification. The small chapel is located on top of a cliff overlooking the ocean. This is located just a few hundred meters from the viewpoint  of Miradouro da Senhora da Encarnação.

4. Take a Stroll on the Carvoeiro Boardwalk

The Algarve region is renowned for its charming boardwalks, which consist of wooden pathways tracing the rugged coastline. These thoughtfully constructed walkways provide accessible routes for people of all ages to relish the breathtaking vistas. You need not have any hiking experience, as without these pathways, you will have to have some level of physical fitness to be able to walk along the coast. It’s common to spot joggers and dog walkers having the best of their mornings on these boardwalks.

Kiki from RooKiExplorers posing on the Carvoeiro Boardwalk.

Carvoeiro’s own boardwalk spans a modest distance of around 500 meters. However, this short stretch unveils some of the most exquisite coastal panoramas. As you walk this trail, you’ll encounter awe-inspiring rock formations sculpted by the relentless crashing of waves against limestone cliffs. I admire how you can see that they are constantly trying to construct more of these boardwalks across the Algarve region to allow people to experience the beautiful coast, irrespective of age and physical fitness.

Tip!   If possible, try to visit during sunrise or sunset when the sky puts up the best show for you. Also, as it becomes dark, the lights on the boardwalks look stunning.

5. Enjoy the Views in Miradouro da Falésia do Carvoeiro

This will be the first stop when you walk along the boardwalk of Carvoeiro. About 350 m from the boardwalk’s starting point, you’ll notice a branching point that diverges from the main path. One of these branches guides you down the cliff via a series of stairs. As you descend, you’ll catch glimpses of the captivating rock formations nestled within the limestone below.

The wooden plank stairs seamlessly transition into rough-hewn steps etched into the natural rocks of the cliff, offering a stunning landscape to explore. There aren’t many well-defined paths, but you can still easily walk into the rock formations to different vantage points from where you can enjoy a nice coast view. Amid these formations, you can even find spots to sit, take in the scenery, and appreciate the beauty around you.

The View from Miradouro da Falesia do Carvoeiro.

There is not much space to hold many people, and I wouldn’t recommend it if it is crowded (I’m not sure it is safe when there are many people, so approach with caution). You can check the crowd above the boardwalk and wait until it clears. You will definitely appreciate it.

Kiki from RooKiExplorers posing from the rock formations in Miradouro da Falésia do Carvoeiro.

Regrettably, I observed many discarded soft drink and beer cans wedged into the crevices of the rocks. Please be respectful and do not litter the place. Additionally, it’s not advisable to try squeezing cans into these gaps. Disrupting the stability of even one rock could potentially trigger a hazardous landslide, so it’s a matter of utmost importance to preserve the environment’s integrity.

A leftover beer can on the rock formations in Miradouro da Falesia do Carvoeiro.

Tip!   Watching the golden hour reflecting through the limestone rock formations will be spectacular if you can visit during sunset.

6. Admire the Algar Seco Rocks

Algar Seco is another set of beautiful rock formations that you can find at the end of the boardwalk. Unlike the previous one, this spot can also be accessed directly from the road. You can park the car nearby and just hop down a few flights of stairs to reach the rock formations. The boardwalk ends here as well.

A nice restaurant with a bar ( Boneca Bar ) is conveniently perched midway along the stairs, where you can enjoy outdoor seating and refresh with a cold drink. Their lemonade was so refreshing after a long walk in the hot sun.

Kiki from RooKiExplorers in a small cave in Algar Seco Rocks in Carvoeiro, Algarve.

It is closed on Sundays and open on all other days between 12 pm and 10 pm. So, if you are here during sunrise, you may not be able to find this place open, so it is good to bring some snacks and drinks along.

The menu in Boneca Bar, Carvoeiro.

When you reach the end of the boardwalk, you can see that the stairway fans out in two directions. The route going towards the restaurant is where Algar Seco is located. A little further after the bar, you will see an entrance to a tunnel. At the end of it, there are two arch-shaped formations, which look more like a set of windows crowned with curves. These arches frame the ocean’s hues, glistening in the sunlight.

Roopesh from RooKiExplorers in a small cave in Algar Seco Rocks in Carvoeiro, Algarve.

This spot garners popularity among tourists as it is easily accessible and a famous Instagram photo spot. The tunnel is very narrow and can only hold a few people at a time. Unless you are here in the early mornings or late evenings, you will probably not be alone; you’ll likely catch only a fleeting glimpse of the views through the rock formations and perhaps manage to snap a couple of photographs amidst the queue of fellow visitors waiting their turn.

Sitting there and enjoying the views would be lovely, which might be possible during off-peak seasons.

Bonus Photo Spot

If the crowds at Algar Seco become overwhelming and you’re seeking a more secluded spot for capturing great pictures or simply unwinding, then do not miss this one. This is just hidden in plain sight. As I mentioned, when you reach the end of the boardwalk and the stairs branch into two directions, choose the narrower path on your left. This will lead you to a small cove, a secret sanctuary where you can descend and even take a refreshing dip in the water.

While the space might not suffice for a full swim, the tranquility of this place is unparalleled. Gazing through a petite archway, you’ll witness each wave delicately surging in, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. You will find a lot of boats stopping at the archway entrance showcasing this area to the tourists, but since the path is very narrow, they cannot enter. Be sure to gauge the tide levels before venturing here, as high tides can elevate water levels and intensify wave activity. Check out this place with a bit of caution, as nature is unpredictable.

Kiki from RooKiExplorers posing in the photo spot (cove) in Algar Seco Rocks in Carvoeiro, Algarve.

Curiously, most visitors seemed more captivated by the grandeur of the Algar Seco formations, scarcely sparing a thought for descending this particular route, but we were glad we did. It is one of our favorite spots; we hope you will like it too!

7. Visit the Farol de Alfanzina

This beautiful lighthouse is located around 3 km further from Algar Seco’s coast. This lighthouse also falls in the Seven Hanging Valleys hiking trail path. This can also be easily accessed by car, or you can just walk a part of the trail, which starts from Praia do Vale de Centeanes, and it is only about 1.6 km to the lighthouse from this beach. You will need comfortable hiking shoes to walk the trail as the trails could be slippery.

8. Hike the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is an absolute must-try if you’re an avid hiker. This trail, spanning approximately 6 kilometers in one direction, offers the flexibility to be done in either direction. The trail starts at Marinha Beach, Lagoa, and ends at Praia do Vale de Centeanes in Carvoeiro. Praia do Vale de Centeanes is just around 2 Km from Algar Seco, where the boardwalk ends. Most people start the trail at Marinha Beach and finish it in Carvoeiro. But, you can do it in any way comfortably.

View of the cliffs from the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail in the Algarve.

The trail winds its way through a multitude of beaches. Bringing your swimsuit and towels is highly recommended because it is the best way to enjoy some of the lesser-known beaches, and you will definitely appreciate it. The hike should take close to 2 hours one way, not including the stops at various beaches. If you plan to take a dip, consider it a one-day activity where you can take multiple stops along the way on the serene beaches. You can enjoy some of the beaches in solitude, even during peak seasons.

View of the cliffs from the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail in the Algarve.

But if you do it in peak season, start very early in the morning or late afternoon as the sun could be quite harsh during midday. Bring some drinks and snacks with you and enjoy a nice picnic up the cliffs. Some restaurants and bars are on the way, especially close to the Marinha beach but not on the other half of the trail.

View of the Marinha Beach from the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail in the Algarve.

Length:  6 km (one way)

Difficulty:  Moderately challenging

Tip!   If you are not sure that you can complete the hike, you can always do a part of the hike, stop at any of the beaches, and take an Uber back.

9. Hike the Trail of Headlands

Carvoeiro is a convenient location to set up a base for hiking enthusiasts as it sits at the midpoint of two enticing trails’ starting and ending locations. The Trail of Headlands is the hiking trail along the brilliant rugged coastline of the Algarve but in the other direction. When you set off from Carvoeiro, the Trail of Headlands veers to the right, while the Seven Hanging Valley Trail beckons from the left. This counterpart trail also spans approximately 6 kilometers and presents a comparable level of challenge to the Seven Hanging Valley Trail.

Praia do Torrado in the Algarve.

However, unlike the Marinha Beach and the Benagil Caves, it wends its way through lesser-known beaches. It is an advantage or disadvantage based on your own perspective. But obviously, this one is the lesser known of the two, and you will find fewer people.

The trail starts at  Praia do Paraíso  and goes up to  Praia do Molhe  in  Ferragudo , a charming fishing village known for its pretty streets and whitewashed houses.

Praia dos Caneiros in the Algarve.

Psst!   Check out our guide to plan your perfect day trip to Ferragudo and where to take the best photos in this picturesque village.

Much like the previous trail, the Trail of Headlands also goes through several beautiful golden beaches, which is definitely worth stopping by. All the trails in the Algarve region are well marked by half-sized poles with yellow and red stripes. You can just follow the signs, and you will be fine. You just have to watch out for the signs.

10. Go on a Boat Tour to Benagil Caves

If you are visiting the Algarve region, I am pretty sure that you know about the famous Benagil Caves, the most popular tourist sights of the region known for its beautiful hole in the roof of the cave-like formation. Well, it is not very far from Carvoeiro, and you could easily visit Benagil Caves by going on a boat tour, which will show you more than just one cave.

It is a pleasant experience and the best way to visit Benagil if you are not interested in a SUP or kayaking adventure, as Benagil Caves are not directly accessible. Usually, you can visit it as part of a kayak or SUP tour. The other way to visit is to take a boat tour.

The Benagil Caves in the Algarve.

Good to know!   During the high season, most boat tours don’t stop at the Benagil Caves. You can visit it but can’t get out of the boat for a swim, so check before booking your trip.

Boat Tours to Benagil Caves from Carvoeiro :

  • From Carvoeiro: Benagil Caves and Praia da Marinha Boat Trip
  • Benagil Long Boat Tour (From Carvoeiro to Praia da Marinha)

11. Do Something Adventurous

If you would love something more adventurous than going on a boat trip, you should go on a kayaking or SUP tour. You can hire them and get your exploration on if you are very good at kayaking or get on with one of the group tours if you are a newbie like us but still want to experience the fun of water sports. Most Kayak and SUP tours start from Benagil Beach or Marinha Beach, where you can hire Kayaks or SUPs or join group tours. During peak seasons, the tours and the rentals get booked super quick, so make sure to book yours well ahead of time.

12. Go Handicraft Shopping

I love shopping for handicrafts in Portugal, especially the work and items I found while visiting Cavoeiro. There were so many things I wanted to take back with me. However, considering my limited baggage allowance, I stuffed as many items as possible. My favorites were the beautifully painted bowls, plates, cups, and saucers. They also have a variety of smaller dishes which are hand painted as well. They are so beautiful; some are just plain terracotta colored on the outside, but the insides of the dishes are painted so beautifully.

Several hand crafted items near the entrance of a shop in Carvoeiro, Algarve.

I found very unique wall hangings of paintings of the streets of the Algarve region, but it was kind of etched on a slab of terracotta. There are so many items that you could shop for in this little coastal town. The lanes leading from the town center are filled with so many shops that you could spend half a day just in these shops.

A shop that I loved more than the others was  Loja da Fabrica .

What Are the Best Photo Spots in Carvoeiro?

Carvoeiro is filled with many picturesque views, and I have listed some of my favorites below. If you are looking for some of the best locations for your Instagram, this list has got you covered.

  • Miradouro da Senhora da Encarnação and Alto da Praia do Carvoeiro are the best places to get the aerial shot of the town filled with cute little whitewashed houses and the beach view.

The town of Carvoeiro in the Algarve.

  • The stairs from Miradouro da Senhora da Encarnação down to the beach have great views, and the whitewashed stairs against the town’s backdrop combined with the beach are perfect for personal pictures. Also, there is a nice platform in the midway where you sit and enjoy the views.

  • You could find a similar stairway at the entrance to Praia do Paraíso. Still, I loved the first one better, and it’s more easily accessible.
  • Get to the boardwalk during the golden hour or sunrise to capture some great pictures. Also, the boardwalk is lit at night, which is also quite magical.
  • Another excellent spot for your pictures and views is  Miradouro da Falésia do Carvoeiro.  You can take great photos of the rock formations and sea views.

  • Algar Seco  is more famous for being a photo spot, but the cove next to Algar Seco is something I liked better.

If you are keen on capturing more pictures, visit the nearby village of Ferragudo, whose narrow cobblestone streets and beautiful clustered whitewashed houses are what you are looking for in your photoshoot.

Carvoeiro is an absolute gem in the Algarve region, with so much to explore. It is not as busy as Albufeira or  Portimão.  It is a perfect day trip option for explorers traveling car-free and could be a great location to camp or set up your base for people on a road trip.

Carvoeiro: A Guide to the Algarve Beach Town

Carvoeiro: A Guide to the Algarve Beach Town

Whilst Carvoeiro was once a fishing village, it’s now very much a resort town. The beach remains picturesque, nestled between dramatic cliffs and with the shimmering Atlantic Ocean extending as far as the eye can see. The town is beautifully white-washed and from the outside looks quaint. In the town itself, however, you’ll find a plethora of Superbock branded bars, burger joints, and more Brits abroad than Portuguese locals.

It may be less touristy than Albufeira and Lagos, but Carvoeiro is a growing resort area. Whilst Carvoeiro attracts fewer stag and hen holidaymakers than the other big towns on the Algarve, you’re likely to still see a few out in town. In our experience, the tourists here were a friendly and mixed crowd of couples, families, retirees, package holidayers and more affluent resort-goers.

What you can expect from Carvoeiro is nice beaches, great coastal hikes, fantastic limestone rock formations, kayaking adventures into caves and coves, and a smattering of decent restaurants. Let’s get started…

tourist map of carvoeiro portugal

Best Beaches in Carvoeiro

Praia de Carvoeiro – The main beach in town, Praia do Carvoeiro, is a small and picturesque sandy bay between two limestone cliffs. It’s the beach with the most plentiful amenities right on the main strip of Carvoeiro. The beach is ideal for families with small children and those not wanting to venture too far. Unfortunately, during our visit, there was a significant seaweed problem on the beach where the mounting seaweed was blocking access to the water.

tourist map of carvoeiro portugal

Praia do Vale de Centeanes – Our favourite beach in the area was neighbouring Praia do Vale de Centeanes. It was less seaweedy than the other beaches in the area so it was possible to swim here when the water wasn’t too rough. The sand is soft and there’s an unpretentious beach-front restaurant called O Stop where we stopped for lunch salads and chips (Luke may or may not have made a chip butty out of his bread and chips).

tourist map of carvoeiro portugal

Praia do Paraíso – A spiral staircase on the cliff side leads you down to a near-deserted beach. Rockier than the other two beaches mentioned, there are very few people on this beach. Ideal if your beach day plan is to sit and read on the rocks rather than swim or sunbathe on the sand.

Best Things To Do in Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro Boardwalk – This 570m-long wooden boardwalk runs across the clifftop and provides easy access to some of the coolest caves and rock formations in the area, including Algar Seco. The boardwalk starts at the top of the steps up from town by the quaint chapel and fort and extends over to Algar Seco. We also preferred to walk this route into town from the Tivoli Hotel to avoid part of the tourist strip leading into Carvoeiro.

Algar Seco – The famed Algar Seco is a small set of rock formations and caves and scenic viewpoints on the coastline. It’s pretty other-worldly and a good place to explore. Stop by Boneca Bar situated there for a beer to enjoy some shade and views of the impressive rock formations.

Kayaking to Benagil Caves – The best day trip from Carvoiro has to be a day-out kayaking. The best thing about this area of the Algarve is the impressive rock formations, cliffs and caves that run along the coastline. Kayaking is the best way to see these impressive caves, as you’ll kayak right into them and be able to hop off on the beach at the famous Benagil Caves. Tours can be organised at your hotel or you can book online . If you’re not a keen kayaker, then boat tours are also available but it’s worth noting that you cannot get off the boat at Benagil Caves or any other spots if you’re on a boat.

Hike the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail – This rugged cliff-top trail runs from Praia do Vale de Centeanes to Praia da Marinha in the west. Whilst the total trail is 6km, we opted to do a shorter stretch given the high temperatures during the day in June. We passed the beautiful Alfanzina lighthouse and walked along to Praia do Carvalho , a beach that can only be accessed via cave tunnels. Don’t miss the fresh juice stand by this beach (cash only).

Sky Bar at the Tivoli Carvoeiro – The magical sunset view from the rooftop of the Tivoli Hotel is not to be missed. You don’t need a reservation and can rock up at any time during the afternoon or evening, but it’s best to get there a little earlier so you can get one of the sofa seats with the best views. From the bar, you’ll have gorgeous sea views over a cove and the cliffs.

Day Trips from Carvoeiro

Alvor – Praia de Alvor is by far the best beach we saw on our Algarve trip. This expansive stretch of soft golden-white sand runs along the edge of the beautiful Alvor Nature Reserve . This beach feels the most out-in-nature and away from the hustle-and-bustle of the resort towns that we found in the area. The sea here was flat as a pancake, making it a good swimming spot. However, just on the other side of the nature reserve, the thin beach area has enough wind for beginner windsurfers. The town itself is fairly nice, if a little touristy, with a beautiful blue and white church that is worth stopping by.

tourist map of carvoeiro portugal

Ferragudo – A small fishing village, Ferragudo is a quaint place to while away an hour or two. The small town centre has a selection of good restaurants, patisseries and an ice cream parlor. Enjoy a leisurely walk along the coastline or head to the beach of Praia da Angrinha which is flanked by the São João do Arade castle.

Faro – The gateway to the Algarve, Faro is a destination best known for cheap flights and easy access to many of Portugal’s best beaches. But there’s so much more to this city and we were pleasantly surprised by how lovely it is. Faro’s old town is a beauty with its neoclassical arch, Gothic cathedral, quaint cafes and rooftop views of saltwater lagoons. Scale the cathedral’s tower, admire the views, enjoy an espresso at a cute cafe and spend time soaking up the old town. The airport is just 10 minutes away from the city, making it an ideal place to visit before or after a flight. Here’s a sneaky peek of our visit to Faro .

Where To Eat in Carvoeiro

There’s a real mix of restaurants in Carvoeiro, ranging from cheap and cheerful burger joints to 5-star dining experiences. We’re more mid-range eaters, preferring a nice meal without luxury price tags. Whilst fish and meat dishes are staples for the region, it’s possible to eat well as a vegetarian in Carvoeiro if you eat cheese. Vegan cuisine in the town (and the Algarve region) is limited.

Earth Shop & Cafe – Our favourite lunch spot was hands down Earth Cafe. This cafe has a friendly, lovely vibe with its yellow-painted walls and distant sea views. Serving lots of fresh and homemade goods, this cafe is a good spot for all eaters, including vegetarians and vegans. I highly recommend the vegan quesadilla! The best coffee in town is here too – including oat milk coffees which is a rarity in Portugal. The shop inside the cafe stocks beautiful local ceramics and wines from across Portugal.

Villa Medici – This unassuming Italian restaurant doesn’t look like much from the outside but was one of the best places we ate in Carvoeiro. The restaurant is a tardis with a few tables on the balcony leading through to an unexpectedly expansive inside and back courtyard. When we visited, we were surprised to find almost all the tables full. The open kitchen is a good sign, with homemade fresh pasta being made by talented chefs. We ordered the pasta arrabbiata which was perfectly spicy and the house white wine was the best we had in Carvoeiro. A real classic Italian!

Chef’s Kitchen Carvoeiro – Whilst we ate at Chef’s Kitchen Carvoeiro because the menu was one of the few in town that included vegetarian and vegan options, we wouldn’t recommend it. The food was fine but at €20 for a main and more for a meat or fish dish, it’s one of the more expensive restaurants in town without the quality to match.

Touriga Wine & Dine – This small wine bar serves a selection of plates alongside great wines. There’s no wine menu – just let the friendly staff know what kind of wine you like and they’ll give you a taste of one of the open wines on rotation that best fits the bill. We enjoyed some lovely vinho verde (a Portuguese specialty made from young grapes). Food includes cheese boards, pimientos de padron and other meat, fish and vegetarian plates.

Decadente Lounge – For drinks and picky bits only, Decadente Lounge is the loveliest place to be. This well-decorated courtyard bar is surrounded by light stone walls with a fountain and an olive tree too. Wine is €5 by the glass, making the bottles which start at €15 much better value. We had a great bottle of red from the Douro region here. Olives, bread and small bar snacks are available. Make reservations for evenings as it gets busy right up until closing.

Where To Stay in Carvoeiro

Tivoli Carvoeiro Hotel – We stayed at Tivoli Carvoeiro Hotel courtesy of Jet2. The hotel is perfectly situated just a 15-minute walk from town at the top of what’s locally known as ‘restaurant hill’ (where the best restaurants in town are) and 5 minutes walk to Vale de Centeanes beach. This 5-star resort is large with the majority of rooms being sea-facing and includes gym, sauna, indoor and outdoor pools, and a fantastic breakfast buffet. Rooms are very comfortable and the staff are lovely.

tourist map of carvoeiro portugal

Castelo Guest House – With views over Carvoeiro beach, this charming, family-run guest house is an ideal option for those wanting to wake up to sea views and fall asleep to the sound of the waves. The hotel also offers shuttles to the airport.

Quinta do Ourives – This beautiful white-washed villa is a converted farmhouse lovingly restored by the family who runs it. The quinta is the best-rated place to stay in Carvoeiro! Set outside of the main town, the villa has mountain views all around.

How To Get To Carvoeiro

Faro is the closest airport to Carvoeiro and can be reached directly by flights from London airports. Carvoeiro can also be reached from Lisbon airport, but it’s closer and more convenient to arrive at Faro airport.

For UK travellers, flights go from London Stansted airport , as well as London Gatwick airport. We took flights to Faro with Jet2 from London Stansted. The total flight time is just 2.5 hours.

From Faro Airport to Carvoeiro

  • Pre-Arranged Transfer – If you’ve booked a package deal to the Algarve, then transfers by coach or minibus are usually included. These are convenient but depending on the number of stops and passengers can vary in time taken.
  • Bus – There are no direct buses running from Faro Airport to Carvoeiro. Instead, you would need to take the 56 towards Lagos and change in Lagoa for the 107 to Carvoeiro. Buses do not run consistently, so you would need to check Google Maps for bus times ahead of schedule. If you have a flight arriving in the evening or later, we’d recommend an alternate transport option.
  • Taxi –  Ubers from Faro airport to Carvoeiro start at €50. Expect fares to be higher on evenings, weekends and holidays.

We were kindly invited to visit Carvoeiro in the Algarve with Jet2holidays . Jet2 offers package holidays to Portugal , including to Carvoeiro. If you are booking a package holiday, we recommend making sure you support local businesses during your stay, including enjoying local restaurants and activities during your holiday.

Carvoeiro - Portugal holiday guide

Carvoeiro beach

Carvoeiro is an Algarve fishing village turned tourist hot spot located five kilometers south of Lagoa. Built into steep red sea cliffs, the once-attractive village has mushroomed since the 1960s to accommodate (mainly in self-catering apartment blocks) the hordes of tourists who come every Summer to soak up the sun and escape the more hectic pace of towns such as Lagoa, Albufeira and Portimao .

Backed by hills, Carvoeiro centres around a picturesque cove with a sandy and sheltered beach, although it does get very busy in high season. Better and quieter beaches can be found close by at Praia do Centeanes and Benagil . The village (technically a town since 2001) was formerly known as Praia do Carvoeiro .

The name is thought to derive from 'Caboiere' , the old word for an Islamic-Medieval hamlet of fishermen. Carvoeiro has a colourful history of pirates and naval attacks, stretching back to Roman times. The most famous battle took place in 1544 between a fleet of Portuguese ships and the notorious Turkish pirate Xarramet.

To the west of the town is an old ruined fort, which was built in 1670 as part of the Algarve's coastal defences. Very little of the fort survives although the site is also home to the shrine of Nossa Senhora, a chapel overlooking the sea which is said to pre-date the fort.

Boat trip around Algar Seco - Carvoeiro

One kilometer east of the beach are the impressive rock formations of Algar Seco. Steps cut into the dusty cliff lead down to a series of dramatic overhangs above blow holes and grottoes.

Like so many other areas across the Algarve, one of the best things to do in Carvoeiro is to bum on the beach. Carvoeiro Beach does not disappoint. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in the region, with soft golden sand and cliff-lined shores.

It’s also incredibly accessible from the city center. The beautiful white houses from town spill out onto the shore, which adds a layer of convenience and attractiveness to the beach.

Crowds on Carvoeiro Beach one of the things to do in Carvoeiro

Because of its central location, the facilities on Carvoeiro Beach are top-notch. Lifeguards are available in the summer, between mid-May and mid-October.

A boardwalk also leads to panoramic views from the top of the cliffs. Once you’ve had enough fun in the sun, you can head to one of the many bars, restaurants, or cafes that line the shore.

Carvoeiro Beach gets extremely busy in the summer. Plan to arrive early to snag a good parking spot and stretch sand to lay your towel.

While you’re in Carvoeiro, take some time to meander around town. Lovely white-washed buildings with colorful details line the streets and house countless restaurants, bars, cafes, and ice cream parlors.

Carvoeiro is the perfect place for sampling local cuisine and sipping Portuguese beers on terrace bars.

Walking downtown is one of the things to do in Carvoeiro

During the summer, the town features live music and events. The Black & White Night is one of the most popular festivals of the year and features numerous stages for live music and dance performances. The festival takes place in June and is completely free—make sure to wear black or white!

Some quick restaurant recommendations:

  • Decadente – cute cafe for small bites and drinks
  • Earth cafe – quaint coffee and cake shop
  • Donna Maria – sunset dinner and drinks on the beach
  • Happy’s – tasty Portuguese fare at good prices

Strolling along the boardwalk is another one of the best things to do in Carvoeiro. The boardwalk is built into the cliffs above the town and offers epic views of the coast and the village below.

Carvoeiro boardwalk with cliff view one of the things to do in Carvoeiro

The warm hues of the cliffs combined with the bright blue water in the distance are a sight for sore eyes. As you walk, you’ll also see some caves, interesting rock formations, and various bird species.

You can access the boardwalk from the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação or Algo Seco.

The Algar Seco sea caves are perhaps the most spectacular of all the things to do in Carvoeiro. The area is comprised of caves, tunnels, and otherworldly rock formations formed by wind and seawater over thousands of years.

Woman sitting in rock windows at Algar Seco one of the things to do in Carvoeiro

The highlight of Algar Seco is the Boneca Eyes—two holes in a rock formation facing out to sea. There are many fantastic formations, passageways, and a natural pool to discover here.

Once you’ve explored the area, you can refresh yourself with a cold drink and a bite to eat from the nearby Boneca Bar. Pro tip—come in the later afternoon to enjoy a colorful sunset from the clifftop terrace!

You can access Algar Seco from the Carvoeiro Boardwalk or take a boat or kayak tour.

5. Trail of Headlands

No one would judge you for lazing on the gorgeous beaches of the Algarve for the whole of your trip. But those searching for more adventurous things to do in Carvoeiro can hit the rugged Trail of Headlands.

Trail of Headlands one of the things to do in Carvoeiro

This 13km/8 mile (round trip) route follows the coast from Carvoeiro north to Ferragudo and features some of the best scenery in the Algarve. The jagged coastline is an obvious highlight, but you’ll also pass by clandestine beaches, little valleys, and giant sea stacks.

This is an out-and-back trail, so if you don’t feel like trekking the whole thing, you can always turn around and head back the way you came. This map can help you understand more but I’d end the trail a bit sooner than it shows!

Even if you’re short on time, Carvoeiro is still worth experiencing. You can squeeze in Carvoeiro and some of the surroundings with a Carvoeiro and Benagil walking tour .

Praia do Carvalho is another pristine Algarve beach that deserves a spot on every beach bum’s bucket list. This is a slight stretch of sand surrounded by towering cliffs.

Aerial view of Praia do Carvalho for things to do in Carvoeiro

In addition to sunbathing and soaking in the views, this gorgeous spot is excellent for snorkeling, cave exploring, and cliff walking. The best part is, it’s never overly crowded!

Sete Vales, or Seven Hanging Valleys, is another epic hiking trail that hugs the coastline on the outskirts of Carvoeiro. Spanning from Algar Seco to Marinha Beach, this 6km (one-way) hike is one of the most scenic in the Algarve.

Aerial view of Sete Vale Hiking Trail one of the things to do in Carvoeiro

In fact, this trail connects Carvoeiro to Benagil, and the walk is a stunner! It will bring you to the top of Benagil Cave as well, so you can peer down inside.

If you were impressed by Algar Seco, then you’ll love Benagil Cave. This sea cave is one of the most famous landmarks in the country, with a cathedral-like roof and various windows looking out into the ocean.

Kayaking at Benagil Cave for things to do in Carvoeiro

Since you’ll need a boat or kayak to reach the cave, a guided boat tour or kayak rental is the best way to explore it. Benagil Cave is extremely popular, so try to get there as early as possible to beat the majority of the crowds.

Also, I think getting there by kayak is best as you can explore on your own. With a boat tour, you can’t get off the boat. Sometimes, they can’t even take you into the cave because of the tides. So if you want more freedom to roam the cave, kayak here!

By now, you know that the Algarve is full of breathtaking beaches. But it’s hard to overstate the beauty of Marinha Beach.

It’s been nominated as the most beautiful beach in Europe several times, thanks to its golden sand, staggering cliffs, and magnificent sea stacks.

View over Praia da Marinha one of the things to do in Carvoeiro

It may not be as convenient as a beach day at Carvoeiro Beach, but those who make the trek to Marinha Beach won’t be disappointed. Remember, you can even WALK here if you’re up for it!

The coastal trails connect almost every epic place in the Algarve. Just take the boardwalk I mentioned above and keep on walking, this map shows you more.

Of course, if you have a rental car, it will be much easier to get here as it’s only 15 minutes away.

From Faro, it’s only about an hour’s drive to Carvoeiro. If you’re flying into Faro, you can rent a car or hop on a bus. When you arrive at the bus station, there will be quite a few options but booking online is usually way easier.

If you’re coming in from Lisbon, your ride will be around five or so hours. Unless you’re renting a car, you’ll head to the Sete Rios Bus Station in Lisbon. From here, you can hop on a bus easily and head south.

This is the easiest and best site to use for booking any bus transportation within Portugal.

Once you’re in Carvoeiro, it’s relatively easy to walk pretty much anywhere! Some of the places on my list above will be best on a tour or if you have a rental car, but the town itself can be done on foot.
