Places to Visit in Salasar, Churu, Rajasthan, India

Salasar is situated in Churu district in Rajasthan on the National Highway 65 coordinates with 27.72’ degree North Latitude and 74.71’ degree East Longitude. Salasar is famous for Salasar Balaji which has a temple dedicated to lord Hanuman. It is said that the deity is formed of its own and is also known as Shakthi Sthal. The temple was built in the year 1754 A.D. by Mohandas Maharaj and draws large devotees throughout the year. The lord located in this temple is quite different from the ones we get to see in other temples. One can notice that the lord has a round face and sporting a moustache.

The temple was built using materials like sand, stones, bricks, cement, lime, jelly and marble. As the white marble is fully used for the construction of the temple, the Sanctum Sanctorum is made up off gold and silver. The temple is open for devotees from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. and during Hanuman Jayanthi it is kept open throughout the day. The Salasar Balaji temple undertakes some of the regular activities like performing aartis on particular days, recitation of Ramayan and Hanuman Chalisa, singing of kirtans and bhajans in glory of the lord and feeding the poor with lunch and prasadam.

Tal Chhapar Sanctuary:

Tal Chhapar Sanctuary is famous for its wildlife sanctuary and rich in flora and fauna covering an area of 719 hectares. The sanctuary is home for the endangered black bucks and attracts many visitors from all parts of the country.

Malji Ka Kamra:

This is one of the ancient havelis located in Shekhawati town in north Rajasthan which displays fine examples of Indian architecture and style built in 19 th century by a renowned Oswal Jain merchant. The palestial haveli exhibits true blend of Rajput and Italian style of architecture.

Sethani Ka Johara:

This is one of the reservoirs built by widow of Bhagwan Das Bagla lies few kms away from Ratangarh Road. The tourist visiting the place can spot many birds and animals like deers, black bucks and nilgais.

Surana Haveli:

The haveli is built by Surana community of people in early 18 th century that has broad doorways and consists of 1111 windows is a popular tourist spot near Salasar.

Ratangarh Fort:

Ratangarh Fort lies on Agra-Bikaner Highway built by Maharaja Ratan Singh in the year 1820. There is also a huge clock tower, also called as Ghanta Ghar situated at the close vicinity of the fort.

Kanhaiyalal Bagla Haveli:

The Haveli portrays fine example of Indian style of architecture built during 1880 which displays some of the ancient paintings done using lattice work. One can also visit the Jama Masjid and Muslim Haveli located near the Kanhaiyalal Bagla Haveli.

Raghunathji Mandir:

The temple is dedicated to lord Raghunathji or Rama which is said to be built during 1812 and attracts many devotees during Ramnavami festival. It is also one of the popular tourist spot in Salasar.

Aath Kambh Chhatri and Godia Chhatri:

These structures are off great significance which consists of 8 pillared domes facing the northern side said to be constructed in 1776. The interiors of the structure are crafted with beautiful carvings and paintings which is worth a visit to this site.

When to visit Salasar in Rajasthan?

The best time to visit Salasar and adjoining places in Rajasthan would be during months of winter i.e. from October to February, where the weather remains cool and friendly. The temperature during this point of time hovers around 20 degrees and is a good time to visit the place. Summers are generally hot and dry with maximum temperature exceeding over 40 degrees.

Salasar is well linked by roadways and railways quite efficiently. Salasar lies close to National Highway 65 which is a main mode of connectivity by road. The nearest railway station and airport is Jaipur which is approx 170 kms from Salasar. Bus services are available in plenty from Salasar to Ratangarh, Jaipur, Bikaner, Jodhpur and other cities and towns at regular intervals.

Salasar Balaji, Churu Overview

Salasar Balaji or Salasar Dham is a temple located in the small town of Salasar near Sujangarh in Churu district, Rajasthan. Dedicated to Balaji, another name for Hanuman, this temple attracts innumerable devotees throughout the year. Salasar Dham is in a religious circuit of centers of Khatu Shyamji temple and Rani Sati Dadiji (Jhunjhunu) temple and the Salasar Dham (or Balaji). All are located at a close proximity to each Other. 

The magnificent temple was constructed in the year 1754 and is now considered as a shakti sthal (place of power), a place where all wishes come true. The idol of Lord Hanuman here is deemed to be swayambhu (self-created). It is believed that on Shravan Shukla-Navami in 1811 Samrat, a farmer in village Asia found a unique idol of Hanuman with beard and moustaches while ploughing the field. The idol was then sent to Salasar, and a temple was constructed in 1754 AD by Mohandas Maharaj. On Chaitra Purnima and Ashvin Purnima, large fairs are organized and devotees from all over the country flock to the Dham to pay their homage to the deity. They parade to the temple barefooted, to prove the intensity of their devotion or to complete some mannat (wishes).

The Legend of Salasar Balaji

According to popular belief, the story of Salasar Balaji Temple dates back to the 17th century. A farmer named Choudhary Salasar had a dream in which Lord Hanuman appeared to him and told him about the existence of his idol in a nearby pond. Salasar found the idol and decided to build a temple in his honor. However, he faced financial difficulties and did not know how to complete the construction.

Lord Hanuman again appeared in his dream and told him to approach a trader named Rathi, who would help him complete the temple. Salasar Balaji Temple or Salasar Dham is a hindu temple located in the small town of Salasar near Sujangarh in Churu district, Rajasthan . Dedicated to Balaji which is another name for Hanuman Ji , this temple attracts innumerable devotees throughout the year.

History of Salasar Balaji Temple

There are numerous stories associated with the Salasar Balaji Temple and how it came to be.  One such popular story dates back to 1 Saturday of Shravana Shukla, of Navami Samvat (1754 AD), once a Ginthala Jat farmer of Asota village in Nagaur unearthed a stone idol of Balaji while plowing his field. 

The news of this discovery shortly unfold throughout the village and reached the ears of the Thakur of Asota. it’s said that the Lord Balaji appeared in Thakur’s dream, asking him to send forth the idol to Salasar in Churu district.

It was on the same night that Mohandas Maharaj, a Hanuman devotee in Salasar, dreamt of Balaji too.

Mohandas sent forth a message to the Thakur of Asota, who was highly surprised to learn of all the tiny details that the prior had mentioned, without having visited Asota.

The idol was then consecrated at a place that’s currently recognized as Salasar Dham. As per another version of identical story, the Thakur of Asota once having the dream, ordered for the statue to be captive to Salasar and placed within a temple.

 For shifting the idol, the Thakur purchased 2 bulls tied to a cart. it absolutely was determined that a temple would be engineered on the spot where these bulls would stop.

Once the Salasar Balaji Temple was made, several traders and villagers moved to create their homes near to it, therefore forming a village that is currently recognized as Salasar.

Architecture of Salasar Balaji Temple

The Salasar Dham temple was created after a divine dream in which Balaji himself commanded Mohandas Maharaj to construct a temple for his idol. He built an initial mud-stone temple with the help of Muslim artisans Noora and Dau of Fatehpur Shekhawat.

The temple was later rebuilt in concrete with the help of the successor of Sikar Jagirdar Rao Devi Singh.

Later, Mohandas’ descendants Kaniram and Ishwardas developed and renovated the temple and gave it the present form of a giant temple complex.

It took 2 years to construct the mighty temple using bricks, stones, cement, lime mortar, and white marble.

The Sabha Mandap (prayer hall) and the Sanctum Sanctorum (garbha griha) are covered with artistic works of gold and silver, and the parikrama path is made from white marble. Various utensils used in puja, doors and vestibule are also made up of silver.

The Sanctum Santorum has beautiful floral decoration and mosaic works both done in gold and silver.

The temple is administered and maintained by the trust Hanuman Sewa Samiti, and the everyday puja is done by the Brahmin priest of the Dadhich clan.

Management of fairs, social works, public and private facilities such as the maintenance of the road, water supply, charitable hospitals, in the village is also looked after by Hanuman Sewa Samiti.

Jaipur International Airport is the nearest airport located at about 185KM from the temple. One can opt for a taxi to reach the temple.

The nearest railway station is Sujangarh Railway Station which is 27 Kms away from the temple.

The railway station is well connected to all the major cities and towns in India. Travellers can hire taxis/cabs or take buses to reach Dharmasthala from Mangalore.

Salasar Balaji is linked to neighbouring cities in Rajasthan by road and the nearby states by national highways.

RSRTC (Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation) and private buses run regularly to and from Churu to nearby cities.
