The M62 motorway is a major eastwest transportation route through Northern England, connecting Liverpool, Manchester and Hull. It starts at the junction of the M60 and the M62 near Manchester, and terminates at Clifton, near Brighouse in West Yorkshire. It was built between 1964 and 1976.

Safety on the M62 has historically been a concern, with the road having a higher than average number of fatalities and serious injuries. In 2004, the Highways Agency set up a safety scheme on the M62 known as Operation Edgeware, which resulted in a reduction of fatalities and serious injury accidents by around 50%.

In recent years the M62 has seen several improvements in safety, including the introduction of dedicated hard shoulder running systems and an Automated Incident Detection System. In the 2016/17 financial year statistics indicate that the road saw a total of 408 accidents resulting in personal injury, of which 43 resulted in fatalities.

Information: Very heavy congestion on M62 Eastbound at Junction 20 due to workforce on the road. Down to one lane out of four. Best to turn off and look for an alternative route.

WITHOUT a doubt. the people who the overhead gantry signs in the greater Manchester are the most incompetent lot of articles i have ever come across. Take W/E 15 17 OCT. I tried to get home from A627M from the ROYTON ROUNDABOUT. about midnight on 15/10/2021. i found the whole roundabout down to one lane the slip road entrance to the A627M was blocked off . AS USUAL no warnings of any sort of the SIGNS on THE MOTORWAY M62 EAST or anywhere else. LAST FRIDAY 22/2021 IT GOT WORST driving from J17 WHITEFIELD TO J20 EAST i went of the M62 to the roundabout expecting to travel along the A 627M TO OLDHAM i found the entrance to the A627M OLDHAM was blocked off. not one warning sign on the M60 OR M62 EAST. it got worse on my way home from ROYTON i found the entrance to the A627M TOWARDS J20 WEST blocked off. it was about midnight. So PICKED UP THE M62 WEST AT HEYWOOD. on my way home to J17 at WHITEFIELD. guest what J17 SLIP ROAD WAS CLOSED. not one warning sign was lit up i was trying to get home to WHITEFIELD. The people of PRESTWITCH AND WHITEFIELD has suffer 6 years of misery while these motorways were turned into smart motorways. it is still going on. some of it was caused by the people giving out the info of the motorway closures . they caused chaos with misleading information caused accidents when they put out warning signs -motorways closed when they were open. motorways open A ND when motorways open when they were closed. Take J17 M60 EAST/WEST it has been the most shut down than any other part of the whole motorway system most cases no warning signs on these clever brightly lit matrix information. EVEN now i travel the M60/M62 EAST WEST and what do i see. warnings signs lit up telling people of roadworks ahead on M1 M6 hundreds of miles away from my area when they can not even tell us what is happening in the local area. a few weeks ago i went east from J17 TO J20 about 9pm as i past J18 the overhead gantries were lit up warning drivers to slow down, as there were 3 lanes closed it showed 3 lanes with red crosses on eveybody slowed down. a queue formed. A couple of miles down the road the 3 lanes were never shut down. The bloody warning signs had been left on from an earlier incident do you see what i am getting at ANYHOW whose bothered hundreds of millions of pounds has been spent on these motorways. it is only taxpayers money no one regulates how it is spent. if these things keep happening it does not matter there is plenty more money where thay comes from/

  • Published 18 May 2022

With May Approaching, Pump Prices Stick to the Slow Lane

By: andrew gross.

Andrew Gross 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 25, 2024)—With domestic gasoline demand decidedly in the doldrums and the cost of oil retreating, the national average dipped two cents since last week to $3.65.

“Domestic gas demand is pretty pokey at the moment, which is often the case in the runup to Memorial Day and the traditional start of summer driving season,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “The recent national average price of  $3.67 could be the peak until hurricane season is well underway. But as always, the wildcard will be the cost of oil, so stay tuned.”

Overnight drone attack on Moscow injures 1, temporarily closes airport for traffic

Russian authorities say three Ukrainian drones attacked Moscow in the early hours on Sunday, injuring one person and prompting a temporary closure for traffic at one of four airports around the Russian capital.

It was the fourth such attempt at a strike on the capital region this month and the third this week, fueling concerns about Moscow’s vulnerability to attacks as Russia's war in Ukraine drags into its 18th month.

The Russian Defense Ministry referred to the incident as an “attempted terrorist attack by the Kyiv regime" and said three drones targeted the city. One was shot down in the surrounding Moscow region by air defense systems and two others were jammed. Those two crashed into the Moscow City business district in the capital.

Photos from the site of the crash showed the facade of a skyscraper damaged on one floor. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the attack “insignificantly damaged” the outsides of two buildings in the Moscow City district. A security guard was injured, Russia's state news agency Tass reported, citing emergency officials.

No flights went into or out of the Vnukovo airport on the city's southern outskirts for about an hour, according to Tass, and the air space over Moscow and the outlying regions was temporarily closed for any aircraft. Those restrictions have since been lifted.

Moscow authorities have also closed a street for traffic near the crash site in the Moscow City area.

There was no immediate comment from Ukrainian officials, who rarely, if ever, take responsibility for attacks on Russian soil.

More: Russia blames US for alleged drone attack on Kremlin, considers retribution

Russia's Defense Ministry reported shooting down a Ukrainian drone outside Moscow on Friday. Two more drones  struck the Russian capital on Monday , one of them falling in the center of the city near the Defense Ministry’s headquarters along the Moscow River about 2 miles from the Kremlin. The other drone hit an office building in southern Moscow, gutting several upper floors.

In another attack  on July 4, the Russian military said four drones were downed by air defenses on the outskirts of Moscow and a fifth was jammed by electronic warfare means and forced down.

Download Festival organisers announce new traffic measures after 2023 travel chaos

Major delays on roads leading to Donington Park and complaints about deafening noise levels have prompted Download Festival organisers to introduce new measures to prevent some of the chaos caused in 2023, as Phil Brewster reports.

Organisers of Download Festival 2024 have announced new measures to help reduce traffic delays.

It comes after last year's event, held at Donington Park in Leicestershire and attended by 100,000 people, caused chaos on the surrounding roads and motorways, with up to five hours of tailbacks reported by drivers.

Festival organisers have told ITV News Central that this year they will be introducing new measures - including having two arrival days and a new team of traffic coordinators.

100,000 rock fans made their way to the site for the festival's 20th anniversary last year - many driving on the M1, A50, A42, A38 and A453.

Drivers were warned of "severe congestion" by National Highways with a minimum of two hour delays - many drivers reported they're were stuck for up to five hours.

2024 festival organiser, Jess Shields, said this year there will be two arrival days so traffic will be spread out, as well as less than 100,000 attendees.

An investigation by North West Leicestershire District Council was launched in July 2023, following over 200 complaints about traffic and noise from the festival.

It concluded that festival organisers did not breach noise and traffic licence conditions

The tailbacks also caused delays to journeys for those travelling to East Midlands Airport.

A spokesperson for East Midlands Airport said it's working with Download Festival this year on their plans to minimise disruption:

"We are liaising with Download organisers around their plans to minimise disruption in the area. We would advise anyone coming to the airport that weekend to allow plenty of time to get here and check travel reports and social media for latest advice."

Download Festival 2024 is being held on the 14th - 16th of June, with headliners Fall Out Boy, Queens of the Stone Age and Avenged Sevenfold.

Adopt a Highway volunteers remove 42,100 bags of trash from highways in 2023

More than 900 sections of Minnesota highway currently available for adoption statewide ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation thanks the thousands of Adopt a Highway volunteers who help us keep Minnesota roadsides clean and free of litter each year and we invite more people to join this important program.

During 2023, Adopt a Highway volunteers removed more than 42,100 bags of trash from Minnesota highways and rest areas. MnDOT currently works with 2,021 volunteer groups statewide, collectively those groups volunteered almost 100,000 hours to pick up litter for the program. With at least 900 sections currently available for adoption across Minnesota, MnDOT welcomes more groups to volunteer.

Groups who want to volunteer should visit MnDOT’s Adopt a Highway website to connect with their local program coordinator. Volunteers are asked to commit to the Adopt a Highway program for at least two years and should pick up litter from both sides of their roadway section at least twice a year. The average length of an adopted roadway is about two miles. MnDOT posts signs along the adopted segments to recognize the name of volunteer groups.

There are also opportunities to pick-up litter at certain rest areas, or sign-up for a one-day Pick a Highway event.

MnDOT does provide safety information, trash bags and safety vests to every volunteer. Our maintenance crews will pick up the filled bags of trash that volunteers leave along the side of the road. Motorists are encouraged to slow down, move over and use caution whenever they see an Adopt a Highway volunteer group or maintenance crew picking up trash along the roadway.

The Adopt a Highway program has been part of MnDOT’s maintenance operations since 1990.

Drones Disrupt Moscow Airport Traffic for a Second Day

Russia said it had intercepted drones in two parts of the country, in what appeared to be the latest in a string of Ukrainian attacks intended to bring the war home to Russia’s citizens.

Ukrainian drones were intercepted over two parts of Russia, including near Moscow, Russian officials said early Tuesday morning, the latest in a Ukrainian campaign to bring the war to Russia’s citizens across their border. Flights at airports serving the capital were stopped temporarily.

In the Moscow region, two drones were shot down, Andrey Vorobyov, the regional governor, said on the messaging app Telegram . One fell in Krasnogorsk, a town outside the capital, where windows shattered in a high-rise building and cars were damaged, though no one was injured, he wrote.

The damaged high-rise was an apartment building , according to Tass, the state news agency. The other drone fell in nearby Chastsy, Mr. Vorobyov said.

The statements could not be independently verified. Ukrainian officials did not immediately comment on the drones, but Kyiv has increasingly demonstrated its ability to strike hundreds of miles inside Russia’s borders.

Flights were halted at Vnukovo, Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo airports, but service at all three had resumed by 6 a.m., according to Tass . Drones also briefly disrupted flights at two Moscow airports on Monday .

Two other drones were electronically jammed and crashed in the Bryansk region, which shares a border with Ukraine, Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement .

Last week, Moscow said it intercepted a Ukrainian drone that then hit an exhibition center in Moscow’s financial district. Russia’s Defense Ministry has reported that more than two dozen drones have targeted Moscow and the surrounding region since the beginning of July — an apparent attempt to make everyday Russians feel vulnerable, though they have caused only minor damage and few casualties.

Separately, the ministry said Tuesday morning in a statement on Telegram that a Russian plane had destroyed a Ukrainian intelligence vessel near a Russian gas facility in the Black Sea. Ukrainian officials did not immediately comment and the claim could not be independently confirmed.

The Black Sea has been a vital theater of the war since Russia’s full-scale invasion almost a year and a half ago, with Russian warships there firing cruise missiles at Ukraine. But the naval conflict has heated up recently as Ukraine has expanded the size and reach of its drone force.

Raising the stakes still higher, Russia withdrew last month from a deal allowing grain ships to pass to and from Ukraine, stepped up its bombardment of Ukrainian ports and made threats against civilian shipping from other nations trying to reach Ukraine.

The damaged facade of an office building in Moscow hit by a drone attack that Russia blames on Ukraine.

Moscow buildings damaged in overnight drone attacks that Russia blames on Kyiv

Officials say one person is injured in the latest in a series of strikes on the Russian capital that Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for

Three Ukrainian drones were downed over Moscow early on Sunday, Russia’s defence ministry said, in an attack that briefly shut an international airport.

While one of the drones was shot down on the city’s outskirts, two others were “suppressed by electronic warfare” and smashed into an office complex. A security guard was injured, Russia’s state news agency Tass reported, citing emergency officials.

“Ukrainian drones attacked tonight. Facades of two city office towers were slightly damaged,” Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin posted on Telegram.

Moscow and its surrounding area are more than 500km from the Ukrainian border and the ongoing conflict there, but have been targeted in several drone attacks this year .

The attack reported Sunday is the latest in a series of recent drone assaults – including on the Kremlin and Russian towns near the border with Ukraine – that Moscow has blamed on Kyiv.

Kyiv is yet to comment, but Ukraine typically declines to claim responsibility for attacks on Russia.

The defence ministry called it an “attempted terrorist attack”.

“One Ukrainian UAV was destroyed in the air by air defence systems over the territory of the Odintsovo district of Moscow region,” it said on Telegram.

“Two more drones were suppressed by electronic warfare and, having lost control, crashed on the territory of Moscow-City’s non-residential building complex.”

The TASS state news agency reported that the capital’s Vnukovo airport was “closed for departures and arrivals, flights are redirected to other airports”.

Within less than an hour, operations appeared to have returned to normal.

Earlier this month, a volley of drone attacks briefly disrupted air traffic at the same airport, to the city’s south-west.

The attacks on Moscow come several weeks into a Ukrainian counter-offensive to claw back territory captured by Russia since large-scale hostilities erupted in February 2022.

On Friday, Russia said it had intercepted two Ukrainian missiles over its southern Rostov region bordering Ukraine, with at least 16 people wounded by debris falling on the city of Taganrog.

Regions bordering Ukraine have seen regular drone strikes and shelling since Moscow launched its military campaign in February last year, but have rarely been targeted by missiles.

The ministry said the first S-200 missile was aimed at the “residential infrastructure” of Taganrog, a city of about 250,000 people.

On the other side of the border, at least one civilian was killed in a Russian missile attack on the north-east Ukrainian city of Sumy on Saturday evening, according to national police, who added that there were five injured.

Changes coming to fish barrier work zones on US 12 in Grays Harbor County

  • Olympic Region , communications, 3603572600

Bridge construction between Montesano and Elma nears halfway mark

MONTESANO – People who travel on US 12 between Montesano and Elma will start using two new bridges the week of April 29. The bridges are part of a fish barrier removal project that corrects five culverts under US 12 and State Route 8 in Grays Harbor County.

What to expect

On Wednesday, May 1, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will move one lane of US 12 onto the new bridges. Travelers will see daytime rolling slowdowns on US 12 during this work. The bridges are located near Monte-Brady Road and Schouweiler Road. Work is weather dependent and subject to change. WSDOT encourages people to stay alert in work zones as work continues.

Upcoming temporary changes to US 12, SR 8

Throughout spring and summer, travelers will see more changes in work zones on both highways. Crews will slow traffic down at times to reconfigure lanes and set up new work zones. Travelers will continue to cross over the median from one side of the highway to the other at all five locations.

The temporary changes will remain until all bridge structures are complete. To keep people moving around the work zones, one lane in each direction will remain open. The project is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2025.

The work will allow fish at all stages of life to cross under the highways to access spawning and rearing habitat as well as improve highway resilience for people.

Travel tools

While travelers will see a lot of construction around the Olympic Peninsula this summer, WSDOT has tools to help everyone get where they are going. Sign up for email updates for projects in Grays Harbor County. Real-time travel information is available on the WSDOT app and statewide travel map .
