Top-rated guided bike tours of London

Hey there, and welcome to my Red Bike Tours.  Friendly, personal guided bike tours of London, which reveal a living, breathing city, not just the tourist highlights.

My name is Owain and all my tours are personally led by me. Whether you're visiting for the first time or a local keen to explore what's on your doorstep, you’ll get the insider track on all sorts of London life.  I mix quirky stories and surprising facts with useful local knowledge to create the kind of personal curated experience you won’t find anywhere else.

Choose me as your personal tour guide to London and I’ll do everything I can to ensure you have a great time.

Why a bike tour is the best way to discover London

There’s something about the freedom of being on a bike - the wind in your hair, diving off into tiny back streets and getting to experience the place like a true Londoner.   Faster than walking, a bike allows you a leisurely pace but you can still cover a lot of ground.

My British-made red bikes are comfortable and really easy to ride.  My tour follows safe routes through quiet back streets and parks, avoiding busy areas wherever possible.  So even if you haven't been on a bike in a while, you'll be fine.

Let me introduce London to you in a way which makes you feel like you are flying around the city, really taking in its energy and vibe.  I promise, you, you'll end up loving it as much as I do.

Who’s doing all this?

Tally Ho sprung from the ingenious mind of a chap named Jack, a visionary who decided that the ordinary is vastly overrated and the extraordinary should be as commonplace as tea in London. Like a fine brew, Tally Ho has fermented into the quintessential confluence of British charm and adventure.

Innovation Meets Tradition

London bike tours.

Iconic London is the centerpoint of British tradition, royalty and politics, and England's extraordinary capital. With its famous mix of innovative urbanity, boho backstreets, and resplendent regal architecture, London is a legendary city of diverse and dynamic appeal.

On the banks of the romantic River Thames, the Palace of Westminster casts its commanding reflection into one of the world's most famous waterways. As the cosmopolitan caterpillar of commuters cross London Bridge each morning, so the resplendent red jackets of the Guards reshuffle outside Buckingham Palace, royal residence to the King of England. London is one of the biggest players in world economics, a city of incredible wealth, but also of diversity, culture, and staggering history.

A bicycle tour is an efficient and exhilarating way to discover England's captivating capital in a day, taking you to some of the oldest palaces, picturesque parks, and symbolic squares via a pedal through the midst of modernity. Explore St. Paul's Cathedral, Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park, Covent Garden, Soho, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Shakespeare's New Globe Theatre, and the Dockyards, amongst other iconic London landmarks, all in a single day!

You'll have the added benefit of bike rental, and tours that can accommodate a family day trip with children. Whichever adventure you select, England's capital will be eager to enchant!

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

Fantastic pub tour with our guide Jamie yesterday, despite the crazy London weather. Jamie was extremely knowledgeable, with great tidbits of information on both the history of beer and the culture of beer drinking in England. He had wonderful humor, was captivating with his stories, attentive to the questions posed by those on the tour, and simply provided a wonderful and unique experience. I cannot more highly recommend this tour for anyone traveling to London and looking for something unique and fun to do! Well done! My 21 year old son had a blast as well. Lori C. London on a Self Guide Bike Tour

London is a go-to destination for travelers from all over the world. We’re drawn to historic buildings like Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, and St. Paul’s Cathedral. And why not? This cosmopolitan city is alive with history and grandeur.

But if you’re a frequent visitor to London, you may want to dive deeper into the city to discover its quirkier side. With a Santander rental bike on nearly every corner, there’s no easier – or more relaxing – way to get an intimate glimpse of the “other” London than on a self-guided bike tour.

Download the Transport for London (TFL) app to your mobile phone and choose Quirky London . You’ll find a unique self-guided tour for yourself or a group of family or friends.

guided bike tour london

Cross Bones Graveyard

Up first is Cross Bones Graveyard, the resting place of London’s historical misfits, outcasts, and paupers – including medieval licenced sex workers. There were approximately 15,000 souls resting here by the graveyard’s 1853 closing.

Today, it is a refurbished sacred memorial dedicated to the imperfect lives of all of London’s downtrodden over the centuries. The Southwark Mysteries are literary lore based on the famous Cross Bones Graveyard with performances at The Globe.

St. Bartholomew-the-Great

St. Bart’s is London’s oldest continuously operating church, founded in 1123. The church offers an oasis of calm in fast-paced 21 st -century London. This living church was inspired by a dream of Rahere, a courtier of King Henry I, where St. Bartholomew came to him and told him where to build it.

The church welcomes everyone to admire its architectural beauty regardless of faith (or no particular faith). It’s also popular for frequent choral performances including lunchtime concerts.

The Golden Boy of Pye Corner

The iconic statue of the Golden Boy marks the end point of the 1666 Great Fire of London. The fire was said to start in a small bakery and burned for four days destroying 13,000 homes, 90 churches, 44 livery companies, the Royal Exchange, and the original St Paul’s Cathedral. The statue was built as a cautionary reminder to Londoner’s to avoid gluttony, thought by Christians 350 years ago to be the reason God allowed the fire.

Huntarian Museum

The next stop on the Quirky London bike route is the Hunterian Museum. It is situated inside the Royal College of Surgeons. Here you’ll find strange collections of both non-human and human pathological and anatomical specimens, historical medical instruments and models, and sculptures and paintings. It spans four centuries of medicine, surgery, and natural history, as well as the arts. The museum hosts regular educational programs for London school children and is open to the public Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Neal’s Yard

The last, and possibly most fun stop is Neal’s Yard. It’s a quirky little street of colorful shops and cafés with plenty to explore. You’ll want to photograph this tiny courtyard surrounded by brightly colored shops. You’ll find loads of interesting things from raw chocolates and British cheeses to divine skincare products and vegan-friendly cafés.

Bike Trip from Central London, Trafalgar Square, England

DAYS 1 & 2. ARRIVE IN OXFORD

Optional ride: 19 km  Relax and enjoy Oxford ready for a full day of sightseeing, aside from your arrival day. It is a phenomenal city to discover with ancient buildings, lovely pubs, museums, magnificent architecture, galleries and more. There are many walking tours to join and cafes to visit. Or take a side trip to Blenheim Palace, ancestral home of Winston Churchill. An incredible city to explore, enjoy its ambience of lively students, great restaurants and many famous historical monuments. You will stay here for two nights. You will meet our representative tonight or in the morning of Day 2 to get set up on your bikes. You will find the day slips by quickly here but if still keen to do more cycling, there is a rest day ride to try out.

DAY 3. OXFORD TO STREATLEY

RIDE: 27 km or 38 km  Start the day in famous Oxford, seat of higher education which has seen 27 British Prime Ministers graduating from there and many more International heads of state and leaders of industry. Impressive. What an exciting day’s English cycle ride today. Follow the upper Thames and you view traditional English villages and rural landscape galore. Green pastures, graceful willows and bobbing skiffs. Streatley, a settlement for over a millennium, it was even mentioned in the Doomsday book (a census of towns in 1086, ordered by William the Conqueror). Many medieval buildings line the main street, making it a nice visual picture. Visit the enchanting 15th century pub, The Bull or even St. Mary’s Church, in which there is an Anglo-Saxon warrior buried in the cemetery. Please note: the shorter ride is only available in July and August. It also includes a boat hop at the start of the day to Abingdon and its ancient abbey.

DAY 4. STREATLEY TO HENLEY

RIDE: 30 km  There is a 5-minute train hop from your hotel in Streatley to start the day. Spot the area’s most charming English villages on today’s bike trip, from the small village of Streatley with its pretty situation on the Thames. Cycle along the Thames’ banks with fresh air and gliding waterfowl. Henley, your destination, is known for its rowing and regattas, so the Thames is an integral part of the lifestyle here. Visit its River and Rowing Museum to really understand its hold on this town. It is an attractive place with Tudor housing and nice river views. Take a pint in one of its atmospheric pubs. A great place to explore.

DAY 5. HENLEY TO MARLOW

RIDE : 18 km  Today it’s a shorter ride, so you will have time enough to explore The River and Rowing Museum in Henley before your departure. Your bike trip in this traditional area of England continues through the beautiful Chiltern Hills, home to green forests, vistas and birdlife. In August, you can take a boat trip to avoid the rolling hills. Although Mary Shelly put the finishing, horrifying touches on her masterpiece ‘Frankenstein’ in Marlow, it’s not a frightening place. In fact, her house, Albion House, is a tranquil spot on the river. Today Marlow has a bustling high street and has a reputation of some very fine eats with several gastropubs and even 3 Michelin starred restaurants. Try them out if your budget dares!

DAY 6. MARLOW TO WINDSOR

RIDE: 30 km OR 57 km Cycle beside the Thames today, traversing it several times today, criss-crossing via villages, hamlets and iron bridges. Bike along to Windsor and its incredible castle. This is a must visit to see one of the wonders of English Royal Heritage – King Charles maybe staying today! Pedal the magnificent Great Walk to the castle, scene of many royal parades and get some extra miles with a circular ride through the Great Park. Visit St George’s chapel, the place of Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding.

DAY 7. WINDSOR TO HAMPTON WICK

RIDE: 37 km Spend the morning sightseeing Windsor further. It’s a delightful place to wander, see if you can spot the famous Eton school across the river! Then start cycling towards, the Palace of former King Henry the 8th and his wives’ home and enjoy its laid-back ambience. Visit Hampton Court. Magnificent and sturdy, this palace housed the who’s who of British Royalty for 500 years. Most famously, the impressive and infamous King Henry VIII who never gave up his quest for a male heir. He also loved Hampton Court and built it to be a pleasure palace of modernity, remodelling it several times. All six of his wives spent time there and it is still a fascinating place to visit.

DAY 8. HAMPTON WICK CIRCULAR RIDE TO KEW

RIDE: 25 km or 32 km English castles & Palaces! Be prepared for stunning river scenes of swans and draping willows on today’s cycle. Pedal along by Kew Palace (longer ride option) and her famous gardens and on through Richmond, the royal gateway park to Hampton Court. It is a bike ride full of England’s popular sights the world recognises. There is an option to enjoy a boat ride as well along the scenic river.

DAY 9. DEPART FROM HAMPTON WICK

We wish you great onward travels today perhaps to London central a short train ride away to enjoy this great city!
