Yangon to Bagan By Air

A flight from Yangon to Bagan is definitely the most convenient way to travel. The flight only takes 1 hour and 20 minutes. There are five different airlines offering service for this route, depending on time of year: Air KBZ, Golden Myanmar Airlines, Mann Yadanarpon Airlines, Myanmar National Airlines, and Air Thanlwin (formerly Yangon Airways).

Airfare is more expensive but it saves much of your travel time. There are not budget airlines in Myanmar at the moment, so it costs you from US$ 80 one way. Price is depending on booking time and each airway company. However, compare to other options. Flying is the most comfortable levels and save much of your time.

In additional, when you land at Nyaung U Airport, you get amazing views of Bagan field from above. It is also big benefit you fly. So make sure you don’t fall asleep in the last 5 minutes of this flight and a window seat is highly recommended.

If you choose this option, you should book the hotel in Bagan in advance and also airport transfer from Bagan Airport to your hotel.

Note : You are required to buy Bagan Archaeological ticket of 25,000 MMK ($22USD) when landing. Bagan airport does not have ATMs or exchange services so make sure you have enough cash (Myanmar kyat or US Dollar) for your entrance fee in this city.

Yangon to Bagan By Bus

This is also a good choice for getting from Yangon to Bagan for both foreign travelers and domestic tourists. It’s the perfect option as it is pretty comfortable and price is affordable. Besides, it provides more options for departure time than the train. The ride takes about ten hours and road condition is quite good.

There are both day and night buses. Due to long journey, night bus is preferable option. It helps not to waste precious daytime hours and save money for accommodation. You’ll find blankets on board but wear a jumper because the buses are always over-air conditioned.

Bagan Min Tha and JJ Express are the two most reputable companies and you can also upgrade to VIP options for a slightly comfier ride. If you choose an Express bus , you’ll have standard seats and the benefit of toilets onboard, steward service, and snacks, but when traveling overnight it’s usually advisable to spend a little more and take a VIP bus instead. Both companies mentioned above do have VIP buses, but for a slightly more luxurious journey, consider traveling with JJ Express. It costs about US$ 20 per person.

All buses will depart from Aung Mingalar Bus Station and check in time is one hour prior to departure. Normally, it takes around 1 hour to get there from downtown. But during rush-hour in Yangon (6.00 -7.00 PM), you should expect for an hour and a half ride. Taxi would cost around US$ 7 – 10.

When you arrive in Nyaung U Bus station in Bagan , it is also easy to find a taxi or tuk tuk to your hotel. Depending on location of your hotel, price range is from 5 to 10 USD. The main road leading from Nyuang-U bus station to the other areas has a checkpoint, where all foreigners have to pay zone fee to enter the Bagan Archeological Zone.

As Yangon is the country’s busiest international airport and most of you will arrive in Yangon on the first day, so few nights in Yangon will help you to have brief introduction about Myanmar. And the next destination we highly recommend you to visit is Bagan, which is recently recognized as UNESCO World Heritage with more than 3000 ancient temples constructed in the 11th -13th century.

Traveling with overnight bus can save you quite a lot of money (the bus ticket is around 20USD/person for a VIP bus with air conditioned, plus you can save 1 night hotel). Dear Private Holiday People, I’m planning to spend about 20 days in Myanmar at the end of March and in early April this year. Starting in Yangon (4 nights), I wish to visit the Bagan Area, Nay Pyi Taw, Inle Lake and Mandalay (3 nights) from where I am scheduled to depart the country again. Here is my question, asking for your expert advice: What would be the best routing — starting from Yangon — to visit Nay Pyi Taw (2 or 3 nights), Bagan (4 or 5 nights) and Inle (3 or 4 nights) without unnecessary detours in order to not lose too much time travelling between destinations and to arrive at Mandalay as the end-point of my journey? Many thanks in advance for your route proposal. Kind regards Sebastian

Hi, Sebastian

We recommend you to cut out 1 or 2 days in Yangon for spending more time in Inle Lake, especially for trekking from Inle to Kalaw. For itinerary request, please contact our travel consultant to get more details.

What is the best way to go to Loikaw from Yangon and to visit the hill villages from/around Loikaw?

To get to Loikaw from Yangon, you should take overnight bus of which duration is about 13 hours. For getting around, tuk-tuk and taxi are the best recommendation at the present. Besides, you also can hire bicycle or simply just walking around.

If interested, don’t hesitate to contact us to customize your favourite trip at best price.

Hi, I will be arriving Yangon on 31 August and will be staying for 4 days ( until 3 September). I am thinking to go Bagan the next day and do the visit before go back to Yangon. My questions is:

1. I read most of the bus will be leaving at 6pm and reach Bagan at 4am, that means 1 day visit in Bagan is it alright?

2. After the visit, is there any bus on the same day to go back to Yangon?

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Chelsea,

Hi Rebecca Lau,

Hi there, we have roughly 6 days for Yangon and Bagan in March. Would it be enough to cover both places? Also, what is the most comfortable way of getting to Bagan from Yangon? Is it train or bus?

Looking forward to hearing back from you. Thanks.

You only need 4 days for the famous places in both Yangon and Bagan. Thus, you could visit additional Inle Lake or Mandalay. Flight is the best way to transfer from Yangon to Bagan. However, you could transfer by overnight bus to save money. We do not recommend to transfer by train.

Have a nice day!

Hi Chong ML,

You are completely to enjoy 4 places from 10 – 15 Apr as the itinerary below. But it is very rush and tired for you. Only 1-night stay at hotel and 4 nights on overnight bus. Hence, if possible, I recommend enjoying 3 of them only.

Brief itinerary for 6 days in Yangon, Bagan, Inle and Mandalay

10-Apr Yangon Arrival in the afternoon – take an overnight bus to Bagan 11-Apr Bagan Arrival in the early morning – explore temples, pagodas – overnight in Bagan 12-Apr Mt. popa – take an overnight bus to Inle 13-Apr Arrival in Inle around 06.00AM – Inle + Indein sightseeing – take overnight bus to Mandalay 14-Apr Mandalay city tour – sunset at U Bein Bridge – take an overnight bus to Yangon 15-Apr Yangon city tour – Shwedagon Pagoda – departure in the evening

I hope the above information is useful.

Yangon to Bagan: The Best Way to Get There (+ Bonus)

Bagan is an ancient city situated on the bank of the Irrawaddy River in the Mandalay region of Myanmar (Burma). It was rightly known as ‘The Land of Thousand Pagodas’ as it was the home to around 10,000 brick temples till the 13th century.

This was the Golden Era of the then capital city of Burma. However, several causes like natural calamities (earthquakes), time-period, and external forces like the Mongolian invasion led to the demolition of the pagodas, which couldn’t be recovered to date. So, before talking about how to get from Yangon to Bagan, let’s check what you should know about this fantastic city.

In the middle of planning your Myanmar trip? Check here our Myanmar backpacking itinerary

What to Know about Bagan

Bagan is said to be built in the 9th to 13th centuries by Burmans. It was the then capital of Burma, being the wealthiest of all. It was ruled by the Pagan Empire back then, which contributed to building no less than 10,000 pagodas or temples and 3,000 monasteries. However, due to the frequent attacks of Mongols, the Pagan Empire was demolished in 1287.

Bagan is also known for being a hub of religious and cultural learning. Scholars from all over Asia still come to Bagan for their research and education.

Bagan, over the years, has managed to survive around 2220 pagodas spread around 40 square miles, now referred to as Bagan Archeological Zone, which still persists in nourishing the essence of the Burmese culture intact and is mulled over to be a sacred area. The destroyed ruins are being restored by the government.

The regular restorations are the major reason, while Bagan has still not been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Things To Keep In Mind While Traveling To Bagan

Bagan is a fairly friendly city to travel to. Life in Bagan is quite simple, and once you find a perfect vehicle suitable for you to travel, the journey won’t stop. However, if you’re completely new to the city, there are some points that you need to keep in mind while traveling to the city. These include:

  • It is hotter compared to most of the other countries. Therefore, we advise you to keep drinking a good amount of water, else it might dehydrate your body fully and ruin your trip.
  • You will notice that the same routes and temples might be called different and sign-boarded differently in many places. Hence, it is advised to know the city well.
  • Route planning is a good way to make your travel easier in a city like Bagan.
  • Bagan is a religious city. Therefore, short dresses like skirts, frocks, shorts, and strapless tops are prohibited in temples. Also, wearing shoes and socks in temples is forbidden too.
  • It gets chilly in the morning. So for visiting temples like sunrise temples, dress up warm because the stones at temples get really cold before sunrise.
  • The 2016 Earthquake has ruined the city completely. The city is under reconstruction. You’ll find some scaffoldings made of bamboo. Do not enter these areas as they might lead you into areas that might be life-taking.
  • There are thousands of pagodas in Bagan. You cannot cover all of it. Hence, it is advised to be specific. Many temples are famous but do not forget to cover the unexplored ones as they might be more eye-catching.
  • Don’t miss the chance to watch the sunrise and sunset at Bagan.

Best Time To Visit Bagan

backpacking myanmar - yangon to bagan

Summer Months

Being in a tropical country, Bagan has a hot and dry climate almost throughout the year. Unfortunately, there happens to be a minimal probability of rainfall throughout.

The summer months in Burma include April, May, and June, with May being the hottest month. The average temperature during summers goes as high as 45˚C as low to 25˚-27˚C during the nighttime.

The scorching heat gets unbearable during the noontime. Therefore, it is not favorable to visit places after 12 PM till the evening time. So, it is advised not to visit the city during the summers. But, if in case you do, wake up as early as you can and start exploring the city from 6 AM in the morning till 11 AM.

Relax for the rest of the day and resume your visit from 4 PM onwards.

Monsoon Months

There’s fairly less precipitation that takes place during the monsoon months in Bagan. Even if it rains, the climate turns too humid to enjoy traveling. Monsoons are unfit to visit due to the hot and humid weather.

The monsoon months are at the end of June, July and August, and September. However, the most humid month is said to be October (75% humidity). Therefore, if visiting during Monsoons, go out during the evenings.

Winter Months

Winters are the best suited to visit a country like Bagan, preferably in November, December, January and, February. Though the chilly winds’ intensity is too strong, the sunshine compensates for the weather.

The winter months are the most popular and bearable months among the visitors, the peak ones being December and January. Therefore, one can enjoy the complete day wholeheartedly without being troubled by the too hot or dry climate.

How To Travel From Yangon To Bagan

It is around 630 kilometers or 390 miles from Yangon to Bagan. However, there are various traveling options equally convenient. You can opt for the ones according to your budget and travel preferences:

Yangon To Bagan By Bus

The road distance from Yangon (Rangoon) to Bagan is around 615 kilometers. The road conditions are pretty good, and it takes anywhere around 7 to 10 hours to reach Bagan by bus . If you do not wish to pay high traveling costs, a bus is the best option for being convenient and cheap. You can either go for a luxury VIP bus or a local bus, both being perfectly air-conditioned.

backpacking myanmar - yangon to bagan

VIP buses are more luxurious and comfortable. These VIP buses are named ‘Elite Express.’ They provide standard recliner seats with enough leg space and 2+1 seatings, toilet options, small TV, snacks, and even steward services. The price is almost the same as the local buses, but VIP buses are more comfortable than the latter.

Local Buses

Local buses in Myanmar are popular but crowded, which makes them uncomfortable to travel in. However, they are the cheapest and most convenient of all. They, too, are air-conditioned and have recliner seats just as the VIP ones. Moreover, the bus schedules operate overnight.

There are many traveling companies, the most popular being Bagan Min Tha and JJ Express. Both provide luxury as well as local buses. Night buses are the best because you tend to spend the whole journey sleeping and it doesn’t get hectic at all.

Also, unlike day buses where you need to book a hotel to spend the rest of the night after the hectic journey, there is no extra hotel charge. Therefore, you do not waste your daylight hours traveling.

However, if you like traveling during days, Bagan Min Tha departs at 8 in the morning and reaches at 6 in the evening, taking 10 hours in total.

Bus stops and costs

Yangon Bus Stand is Aung Mingalar Highway Bus Stop, and Bagan Bus Stop is Shwe Pyi bus station (at Nyaung U)

The busses would cost you € 10 to € 20, which is cheap and cost-efficient.

Yangon To Bagan By Train

Trains are somewhat equally cost-effective as buses. It, however, takes more time, that is, around 17 to 18 hours which is even more than buses’ duration. If you need full seats to sleep on or you’re traveling with family, trains are the best option to opt for.

The number of trains available to travel from Yangon to Bagan is less in number than busses and flights.

Yangon Central Railway Station is here . The railway  station at Bagan is here (at Nyaung U)

The only train available between Yangon and Bagan is ‘Myanmar Express’ that leaves at 16:00 PM every day. It is bookable on Myanmar Railways .

Yangon To Bagan By Flight

A costlier option, it takes just a couple of hours to reach Bagan by flights, most comfortably. If crowded, time taking and an uncomfortable journey by buses and trains is not your thing, the flight is the ultimate option.

Board a plane at Yangon International Airport and land at Nyaung U Airport. While landing, the mesmerizing view of numerous pagodas can be seen. Precisely speaking, it takes 1 hour and 20 minutes to fly to Bagan.

A few of the airways that take you to Bagan are Air KBZ, Asian Wings Airways, Mann Yatanarpon Airlines, Myanmar National Airlines, and Yangon Airways, which costs you about € 100.

Depending on the distance of your hotel, book a cab service that’ll take you to your destination.

What to do when you arrive at Bagan

Bagan is not just the Ancient Capital of Myanmar, but it has more to it. It is still home to around 2000 temples of all types and sizes dating back to the 10th century. The tour to Bagan always turns out to be the most captivating one in Myanmar. It would take around three days to cover the Bagan Archeological Zone, which is the main attraction at Bagan. The entry fee for the Bagan Archeological Zone is € 16, which offers to visit all the temples in the zone. The ticket is valid for five days.

Getting around in Bagan

Interestingly, there are many vehicle options that you can opt to travel to the town.

Means of Transport

  • Bicycle: The cheapest option, bicycles come really handy to travel to the town. It costs just € 1.28 per day to rent the pushbike. However, no matter how pocket-friendly it is, keeping the sunny weather in mind, it gets tedious to opt for this option.
  • Taxis: The coziest way to travel the city charges anywhere between € 13 – € 20 per day.
  • Electric Bike: One can get e-bikes for € 5.8 per day. The only drawback is that it might run out of charge, and it will be the most troublesome situation in between a tour.
  • Horse carriage: A unique way of traveling, Bagan offers Horse carts to travel the city costing around € 12.78 for the whole day. It is a budget-friendly option and is an experience in itself.

What you should visit

Visit temples like Ananda Temple (the most famous Temple of Bagan) and Dhammayan Gyi Temple (largest temple of Bagan), Alodawpyl (has a roof made up of gold), Shweshandaw Pagoda (famous for sunrise), and Pyathetgyi Pagoda (famous for sunset). These temples are at a height, so you need to climb uphill, which is an experience in itself. Try to cover as many temples as you can.

Visit Nyang U markets for buying traditional Burmese articles. Shop until you drop. Book a cruise at Ji Harmony to chill and wait for the sunset time.

Few attractions which are not included in the entry ticket of the Archeological Zone include The Archeological Museum, which has information about the history of the city and various famous temples. The entry fee for the same is € 3.20.

The Golden Palace of Bagan offers you traditional food, music, and cultural shows of Burma, the entry fee of which is € 2.5. Maha Bodhi is a white-stoned temple with carvings of Buddha.

Apart from temples, Bagan possesses the most beautiful view of Sunrise and Sunsets. Though these venues are fairly crowded, do not miss a chance to watch the heavenly view. Few of the temples from which you may enjoy the Sun are:

Ballooning in Bagan

While enjoying the trip to Bagan, take a trip to the skies. Ballooning in Bagan should be a must on your to-do list. Explore details of the ancient city from heights. It is an experience to be.

One of the most famous firms that provide the best ballooning experience is ‘Ballooning over Bagan.’ A 20-year-old firm, it provides a great package which costs €315 per person. The package includes pick-up, breakfast, and refreshments paired with wine while floating.

The balloons usually fit 10-15 riders at most, accompanied by a trained crew. In all, it is one of the most mesmerizing experiences. So, if your pockets allow, rent a hot air balloon at least once.

Here is Map of Bagan with my chosen attractions. In addition, you will find what temples you should visit and where you can eat or spend the evening.

How to choose your hotel

Booking a hotel in Bagan depends on your budget as well as your preference of hotel type. All types of hotels are available, mostly Grand and luxurious and even at not very high prices. There are three options to stay at Bagan:

The main ancient town of Bagan is the place where the Archeological Zone of Bagan lies, that is, a 40 sq miles area. It is home to thousands of temples, pagodas, and monasteries. This area has the Burmese cultural flavor all over and isn’t as urban as New Bagan.

You’ll find many excellent options to stay in Old Bagan, where temples are in the vicinity of the hotels. Moreover, you can find many luxurious resorts at Old Bagan, which is the best place I recommended. You will for sure admire the grandness of the hotels.

Hotels at Old Bagan are available at an average cost of € 30 to € 60.

We know that New Bagan was built to resettle the affected families during earthquakes while Old Bagan was being restored. It, later, became a small town in itself. It is, however, away from the temples and tourist attractions but has plenty of shopping and food spots.

New Bagan, unlike Old Bagan, has new hotels at cheaper costs. However, not many hotels are nearby the temples. Therefore, it is Old Bagan that gets the upper hand in staying over New Bagan.

Hotels at New Bagan are comparatively cheaper than Old Bagan. The average cost of hotels at New Bagan is 25€.

Here is where you should go next:  how to get to Inle Lake in Myanmar

Nyang U is the area where the airport and bus stand is located. It has much of an urban setup. It is around 20 kilometers away from Old Bagan city. There is no nightlife in Bagan lest in Nyang U.

Many luxury and cost-effective hotels are available at Nyang U with eating points that can be found everywhere.

You can even get luxurious hotels at lower prices of € 20 to € 30.

All the options are apt to stay. However, I recommend you stay at Old Bagan as that is the area with the real essence of Bagan culture, unlike the other two. Cheaper options are available in Old Bagan too. Nyang U is another option that has urban luxury hotels. Foreigners will like Nyang U more than the formers.

A few hotel recommendations are Amata Garden Resort , Innwa Motel , Aureum Palace Hotel and Resort, Morning Star Guesthouse, Aye Yar River View Resort, and Heritage Bagan Hotel.

Yangon To Bagan in Myanmar – The Best Ways to Travel

Yangon to Bagan by Bus

If you are wondering how to get from Yangon to Bagan , I got you covered. On your Myanmar trip, it is very likely that you will visit Yangon , the former capital city. Some just use the city to arrive or depart by flight, which is a shame because this city has so much to offer. But Bagan is on everybody’s list.

Its 2000+ temples beckon travelers for its rich history and architecture. In this post, I’ll share the details of all the options available travel from Yangon to Bagan, comparing between the cheapest and most comfortable ways of reaching Bagan.

Yangon to Bagan by bus

Traveling from Yangon to Bagan by Bus was not a popular option among many travelers until a few years ago, but this has changed for better. Now, taking Yangon to Bagan bus is the preferred choice because there are well air-conditioned buses( which are rather over-air-conditioned), affordable, and there are night as well as buses during the day time.

Yangon to Bagan

If you are a backpacker on a budget, then you can opt for a night bus to save on accommodation for a night as well as daytime. If you travel during the day by bus from Yangon to Bagan, you can avoid the hot and humid outdoors, enjoy the scenic route and appreciate the countryside.

The downside is travel time, which is around 9 to 10 hours. If long journeys aren’t your cup of tea, you might feel uncomfortable. One way of overcoming this is to take the night bus from Yangon to Bagan so that you can try sleeping!

Editor’s note: How to travel from Yangon to Mandalay

Where to book a bus from Yangon to Bagan?

There are many bus companies offering services, but the top ones are Min Thar and JJ Express Bus. I used both on different routes and liked JJ Express Bus better as the seats are better, blankets, water and snacks are provided, and they run on time.

Yangon to Bagan

There are two kinds of buses, regular and VIP buses. Both are air-conditioned, have reclining seats and are comfortable. The VIP buses have 2+1 layout though, and have extra leg space and are better. The price difference between the two is not much, so I would highly recommend you to book VIP buses while traveling in Myanmar if buses are your choice. The VIP buses of JJ express sell out very soon because of their popularity, especially during the peak season. Hence it is better to book a few days in advance.

  • You can buy the tickets on Bookaway or Myanmar bus tickets websites. You can compare different rates and timings as well. The cost of the bus depends on timings, the bus company and the type of bus. It ranges from 7 to 25 USD per person.
  • Reach Aung Mingalar Bus Station at least 30 to 45 minutes before the scheduled departure. The bus station is quite huge and it takes time to find out where your bus would come. Book your bus tickets here .
  • The traffic jam in Yangon is too bad, and if you take a public bus to reach the bus station, it takes a lot of time. Local cabs reach faster but are expensive. Either way, it is best to leave early to not miss the bus.
  • The bus station at Bagan is Bagan Shwe Pyi Bus Station. There are many taxis available to get to your hotel, but since it is out of town, they can be expensive if you are alone. Find some people from your bus and try to go in a group to share cab prices.
  • When you enter the town, you will have to pay 25,000 MKyat as entry fees for foreigners to Bagan. Keep the entry ticket with you at all times when in Bagan. It is valid for 5 days, but there is no strict imposition for renewal if you extend your stay in Bagan.

Editor’s note: Best Places to View Sunrise and sunset in Bagan in 2019

If budget is not your constraint or time is, taking a flight is the best option to reach Bagan from Yangon. There are many scary stories on the internet about the safety of these local airlines though, and hence might not be an option if you are afraid of flying or don’t feel confident about safety.

Yangon to Bagan

Here are some of the airlines that make a trip from Yangon to Bagan – Myanmar National Airlines, Yangon Airways , Air KBZ and Asian Wings Airways. The flight costs around 120 to 150 USD per person, which is quite expensive. If you book in advance or travel during the off-season, the prices are better.

You will reach Bagan in less than 1.5 hours for the hefty price, and also, you get to see stunning bird views of Bagan temples from the top. So make sure to grab a window seat on your flight.

If you are flying from Yangon to Bagan, make sure to reach Yangon airport early, as it is far away and the traffic in Yangon is bad.

Editor’s Note: Check out this travel guide to the Best Temples in Bagan

It is not possible for foreigners to rent a motorbike or a car in Myanmar. So the next possible thing is to hire a taxi with a driver if you wish to travel by car from Yangon to Bagan.

Bagan bus

The price is less than flights and higher than buses. It takes about the same time of around 10 hours to reach, which could go longer if you stop for visiting any attractions on the way. If you don’t like traveling in a bus or a flight and prefer private, comfortable transport, then this could be your choice.

You can hire a cab through your hotel or guesthouse, or they can be booked online. They quote higher prices and you have to bargain to get the best prices. Expect to pay around 70 to 120 USD for a one way trip per day. You can also negotiate for a deal if you want to use a cab to explore Bagan or to travel further.

Editor’s note: How to reach from Yangon to Inle Lake – A total guide

By Train From Yangon to Bagan

Trains are one of the best ways to experience life in SE Asia, no matter what the country is. However, it comes with cons when it comes to Myanmar. The trains in Myanmar are very slow, seats or toilets are not comfortable and are not on time.

Yangon train station

One way to have a comfortable journey is to book first-class section seats which offer the best seats possible, along with manageable toilets and crowd. The train ticket costs around 15 to 25 USD. The train from Yangon to Bagan starts at Yangon central railway station and takes around 17 to 20 hours! Yes, you will have to spend almost a day on the train, and hence it is the least popular mode of reaching Bagan.

If you want to enjoy a train journey nevertheless, book a first-class seat on a night train in advance missing which you will have to sit for the entire duration.

Note that if you are traveling during the low season, there might be no sleeper coaches in the train. So check before you plan to book.

The Bagan Railway Station is about 10km from New Bagan and taxis are available to get into town. As mentioned earlier, try to find some companions to share your cab ride to cut costs.

So now you know what are the available options to travel from Yangon to Bagan and back. In my opinion, buses are the best way to go. Take your pick and have a happy journey. Read other posts below to plan your Bagan and Myanmar trip.

How to Get From Yangon to Bagan (4 Ways)

By: Author Jess Esa

Posted on Last updated: 4th January 2024

Yangon is an exciting city with streets full of colonial heritage buildings to explore and exciting culture to get stuck into. But when you’re done, most people head off to one of the greenest and most fascinating spots in the country, where you can hop from pagoda to pagoda, watch marionette shows and cruise along the Irrawaddy River.

Bagan is a fascinating place, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the perfect stop on any Myanmar Itinerary. But with a few ways to get there, what’s the best way to travel from Yangon to Bagan? Of course, any of these routes will also work just as well if you’re traveling from Bagan to Yangon.

The Fast Way – Yangon to Bagan by Plane

Undoubtedly the fastest way to travel between the two cities is by plane. You can be in Bagan one hour and twenty minutes after leaving Yangon which is pretty impressive considering it takes ten hours by bus.

Unfortunately, you do pay for this premium. There aren’t any budget airlines in Myanmar at the moment so you’re looking at a minimum of $60 but if you’re short on time and just want to see the magical spot than is Bagan, it’s more than worth it.

I found the flight very comfortable, the airport was straight forward to organised and we even got a small meal on the plane which, considering the short time, I wasn’t expecting. They also weren’t fussy about my luggage considering I had bits and pieces all over the place at one point.

Of course, you can also expect amazing views of the temples as you land which honestly is almost worth the cost fo the flight alone. Book in advance and be as flexible as possible with which day for the cheapest flights.

Note: you can actually fly directly to and from Bagan with Bangkok Airlines now which is a perfect way to extend your trip.

Book your transfer to the airport

The airport is just under an hour from downtown Yangon, you can book an easy transfer in advance.

Yangon to Bagan by Boat

You won’t be able to take a boat as Bagan is on the Irrawady River whereas Yangon is on the Yangon River. If you’d love to arrive in Bagan by boat specifically then consider travelling to Mandalay first and then going on to Bagan by river.

Yangon to Bagan by Bus

This is the most popular choice for getting from Yangon to Bagan, it’s the perfect budget option and is comfier and offers more departure times than the train. Yes, it takes ten hours but you can watch the wonderful scenery go by and have a snooze.

You can also get the night bus which is a popular option for saving on accommodation and time. You’ll find blankets on board but wear a jumper because they love to crank that AC right up. Bagan Min Tha and JJ Express are the two most reputable companies and you can also upgrade to VIP options for a slightly comfier ride.

You can book your bus tickets to Bagan here .

Yangon Train Station

Yangon to Bagan by Train

Catching a train in Myanmar is a wonderful experience you should have at least once (if you have time in Yangon, ride the circular railway) but maybe Yangon to Bagan isn’t the best time to try that. The journey takes a whopping seventeen hours and really isn’t the most comfortable journey, seriously it’s an incredibly bumpy journey.

However, the scenery is gorgeous, the experience is unique and there’s wonderful cross-section of society on the trains. The trains themselves, normally old Japanese trains are a sight in themselves.

During the low season, you probably won’t be able to get a sleeper car so bear that mind if you were hoping to get some shut-eye. Depending on which class you choose, this will be the absolute cheapest option available so if you’re on a budget and have plenty of time, why not?

You can book train tickets online here or you can go to the station a few days ahead and pick one up in person. You need a paper ticket to board no e-tickets which could be an issue.

Yangon to Bagan by Car

You can absolutely drive to Bagan from Yangon but bear in mind that rentals for foreigners are currently not allowed so unless you have a designated local driver then this probably isn’t an option.

You can hire a private taxi, however, and at 620 kilometers (390 miles) the journey will take about nine hours. Hiring your own driver will cost you around $60 so it isn’t the cheapest but can still be cheaper than flying and will keep you in relative comfort. They drive on the right in Myanmar but you’ll notice a lot of the cars are left-hand drive as many are imported from Japan.

They’re phasing these out slowly but that does make the roads somewhat challenging and people often have an assistant driver to help them watch the roads properly. It’s a fact worth bearing in mind before taking to the roads yourself!

2024 update: Myanmar is still going through a period of civil unrest, according to the US State Dept. at travel.state.gov. Travelers are asked to “reconsider traveling to Myanmar (Burma) due to armed conflict and the risk of wrongful detention of foreigners. The Travel Advisory for Myanmar (Burma) was renewed on July 24, 2023, as “Level 4: Do Not Travel.” For more information on this topic as well as developments, please visit the US Dept. of State website .

Bagan lives up to its captivating expectation and that’s why it’s part of any Myanmar trip! We did our research beforehand, somewhat, but it couldn’t have even prepared us for the variety of temples and pagodas to see, views for sunset and sunrise and the adventure of getting around the Bagan area.

Things we’re glad we had with us during our Southeast Asia trip

  • Get a Lonely Planet guide (on Amazon or Bookshop.org ), which for us is always an indispensable part of a trip.
  • Make sure you have sandals like Birkstenstocks that slide on and off easily for visiting temples where shoes are not allowed.
  • Do you have a travel camera that you trust?
  • Use our checklist of travel camera accessories in case you want to be using a tripod, or get a new memory card.
  • Bookmark our list for how to prepare for traveling abroad, whether it’s your first or 99th time!

Is Bagan worth visiting?

Bagan is worth visiting if you want to go to the #1 most popular attraction in Myanmar. Bagan is a collection of 2000 Buddhist pagodas, stupas and temples scattered across a flat area near the Irrawaddy River (alternatively spelled as the Ayeyarwady River).

Should I skip Bagan in my Myanmar itinerary?

Bagan is not worth visiting if you do not do well in the heat, if this type of attraction does not interest you or if you’d rather be engaging in adventure sports like hiking, or beaches. From what we saw, the Bagan region does not have much well-known outdoor activity aside from exploring the acres and acres of temples scattered on the plain.

If you choose to go, we do recommend that you visit Bagan first (after your city of entry) in a Myanmar itinerary. It’s smart to visit Bagan first and cool off afterward at Inle Lake, for example, as we mention in our Inle Lake travel guide .

Is Bagan popular for tourists?

No longer somewhere where you can actually avoid tourists , Bagan is indeed popular. For visitors to Bagan these days, the first thing you will probably note is that Bagan has experienced a very quick increase in popularity, and for that reason, there is a lot of less-than-charming development.

There’s an incredible amount of hotels to choose from, lots of restaurants to eat in, lots of tour options, lots of English and lots of visitors.

Why should you go to Bagan?

Having seen photos of Bagan on Instagram and online for the past seven or eight years, I knew this is somewhere I wanted to go. Bagan is a very unique place you can visit in Myanmar, and because there’s no specific temple to visit or specific way to take your trip, this is a really flexible experience to have.

We did meet travelers who skipped Bagan, for the reason above; they wanted to focus more on hiking, beaches and cities. For this reason, it’s up to you.

How do you get to Bagan from Yangon?

In our experience, taking a night bus was ideal! We left Yangon at 8 pm and arrived at 5 am in Bagan. See more about night bus travel at our Myanmar travel guide .

Is there a right way to visit Bagan?

Bagan can be slightly overwhelming due to the sheer number of pagodas, stupas and temples and that their locations are rarely walking distance from one another. From looking at a map, there’s no way to logically visit them all, and there’s even few ways to logically visit the ones you want without some pre-planning or going with a tour guide.

Remember: use minimalism techniques in your travel appetite and keep in mind you don’t have to see it all. I found that the best way to avoid being overwhelmed was to figure that there was no way I was going to be able to visit all the pagodas — I wasn’t even going to be able to see all the most famous ones.

If you consider Bagan an adventure with no ‘right way’ of seeing the places, then you’ll be fine and enjoy the experience of seeing this unique historical place.

What should I wear in Bagan?

What to wear in bagan.

Bagan is very hot, all year round. By ‘very hot,’ I mean temperatures of 92-96 degrees F during the day and a real feel of 106 F (this was what my Google Pixel told me). During the day, it’s not humid, so you feel kind of fried. At night, there’s a slight humidity that comes out, and that lasts until the end of sunrise.

Because Bagan is so hot, you’ll want to wear light, airy and breathable clothes. You’ll also want to keep in mind that entering the largest temples will require covering shoulders and usually covering legs (both men and women). The temples are places where Buddhist visitors will pray, and where locals go to pray as well. For this reason, it’s best to be prepared to respect the Buddhist custom of conservative dress.

What should women wear in Bagan?

So, what should you wear? Every day, I wore a maxi dress that was strapless or spaghetti-strap on top, and hit between my knees and ankles at the bottom. For visiting temples that had a dress code, I simply put on my sarong or shawl that I was carrying around for the day. This is perfectly acceptable.

What should men wear in Bagan?

Dan wore shorts and a T-shirt every day, and at temples, he would put on the longyi that we bought at a local shop in Yangon’s Chinatown . He kept this in his backpack for when it was required.

As soon as we left the temple grounds, we were able to wear whatever we wanted again, as we rode around the Bagan region either on E-bike, bicycle rentals or with a tuk-tuk driver.

How do you get around Bagan?

Bagan itself is a big region and making walking less of an option than the others we’ll list. Among the following options, we tried out three. We found various travelers mentioning the use of Maps.me, which you can learn about in our tools for travelers .

If you choose to go around on your own, note that having downloaded offline maps or a Google Fi plan will help with mobile data.

Rental bicycle

You can rent a bicycle from your accommodation or from a shop and bicycle around Bagan. We tried this, and saw lots of visitors doing it as well.

  • Pros: it’s a great way to be sustainable and to exercise your legs! Also, bicycles are free to take out for a day at most hostels and guesthouses that own 5 to 10 of them.
  • Cons: Once you’re off the main roads that connect the towns, the dirt roads are not so fun when you’re on a bicycle, and, if you experience a rental bike that is not maintained and needs a tune-up, it’ll make it even less fun. Another con is that you won’t be getting around so fast.

E-Bike, moto or scooter

Anywhere else, I’d refer to an E-bike as a scooter, but in Myanmar, they are called E-bikes. You will see signs for E-bike rentals, and this is the preferred word to use for the type of scooter that’s similar to a motorbike, but probably goes a little slower and is more usable for someone who’s less experienced in riding motorized bikes.

I pictured an E-bike to be an actual electronic bike, which I’ve seen in NYC, but no — it’s what you’d picture to be a scooter.

If you’ve never ridden a scooter or E-bike before, you’ll want to practice before you start driving among the locals on the main roads and dirt roads. For anyone who has done this before, it’s simple, but if it is your first time, definitely be cautious and be sensitive to your safety!

  • Pros: You can go faster than a bicycle. Also, the fees are usually very affordable, like 3000 Kyat ($1.43 USD) for a few hours. Lastly, you’ll be able to explore freely and independently.
  • Cons: You’ll need to trust yourself riding one, and, E-bikes don’t do so well going through sand or uneven dirt roads.

Planning to ride motos often around Myanmar? Consider getting travel insurance with World Nomads or SafetyWing to save you in case of an accident.

Tuk-Tuk Driver

The morning before we experimented with E-bike rentals, we ordered a tuk-tuk ride to a sunrise spot. The Baobabed Hostel desk staff helped us organize and had a driver in mind.

  • Pros: We didn’t have to worry about navigating and finding our way in the dark, before sunrise, to any spot. Come to think of it, this was really convenient! Also, our driver waited for us while we hung out at the pagoda taking as many photos as we wanted to. Lastly, this was totally safe!
  • Cons: The fee we had agreed upon was for ‘sunrise only, and in visiting a pagoda afterward, the driver charged us additional money. We were able to negotiate.

Guided Tour of Bagan or Tour Package

We did not take any guided tours, so we can’t speak to any recommendations or the quality of the tours in Bagan; we did, however, see lots of guides during our time there, and they were speaking German, Spanish, English and French! Wow!

  • Pros: You will learn way more than you would on your own, and the guides will take you to the best spots, all without you having to do any work to find them or stress over where they are.
  • Cons: If you’re into adventuring on your own, this is not the option for you.

Hot air balloon ride in Bagan

Before we left home, friends said, “OH! You’ll HAVE to do the hot air balloon over Bagan! It’s unforgettable!” We said sure, yes, sounds great, and then we learned about the price tag.

Completely unaligned with what other things cost in Myanmar (beers for $1, hostel privates for $30, meals for $2 and overnight buses for $22), hot air balloon rides over Bagan, which have a duration of 45-60 minutes, cost between $320 and $400. Yes, you read correctly - this is probably the most expensive thing you can do in the whole country!

Nevertheless, we saw lots of tourists dish out money for this unique experience. If you have it in your trip budget , then take a hot air balloon ride! Lucky for us, we were able to take a hot air balloon ride recently over Teotihuacan outside Mexico City, so we didn’t feel like we were missing too much.

  • Pros: This is a beautiful, unique and exciting way to see the Bagan pagodas from above.
  • Cons: It might cost you more money than you spend on everything else during your trip. We preferred saving money while traveling and supporting locals.

How many days do you need in Bagan?

We received various tips for how many days we ‘needed’ to spend in Bagan during our planning, before we left home. Friends who had done speed trips to Myanmar saw Bagan in one day. Some friends recommended two full days. Some recommended three or four.

The ‘tourist ticket’ that will be charged when you enter the Bagan region at a checkpoint upon arrival by your bus, shared taxi or flight is equivalent to approximately $15 and is good for five days, so we considered that the real limit.

Is three days enough for visiting Bagan?

We found that three days was the perfect amount of time in Bagan, giving us opportunities for three potential sunrises and three potential sunsets. During our time of travel, in October, the sun would set around 5:30 pm and would rise around 6 am.

Lucky for our planning and with our flexible three days, we actually were so tired from having arrived on night bus that we napped and slept through our first opportunity to see a Bagan sunset. Fortunately, we were able to see the sunset from the pagodas on both following days.

What to do during the day in Bagan (because it’s so hot)

We were perplexed about what to do during the day in Bagan because it was so hot. What was everyone doing?

Avoid bicycling during the hottest hours

Our first day, in a rookie move, we rented bicycles and figured we should take a ride to the nearby town of Nyaung-U, where I knew there were a bunch of hostels, guesthouses and restaurants. Our free bicycle rentals were not too great, with no gears, flat-ish tires and janky pedals, and biking in the heat was tiring and frustrating.

We were sweaty, riding through clouds of street dust and our sunscreen was dripping off our faces. We found out that this is what you should NOT be doing during the day in Bagan!

Take a nap or enjoy your hostel’s AC

The next two days we did one of two things from the hours of 9 am to 3 pm: napped, or hung out in our hostel lobby with WiFi, AC, coffee and the option to order some smoothies. For lunch on one of the days, we walked a short distance to a ‘fancy’ Thai restaurant, where we had lunch, despite not being so hungry.

It was something to do during these hours of extreme heat. On our last day, we played pool in the hostel lobby with two Burmese guys who were really nice and played a good game of pool as well.

Can you go out during the hottest hours in Bagan?

It seemed like other travelers were either braving the heat and seeing temples despite the high temperatures (maybe they were pressed for time?) or napping in their rooms. Engaging in any type of physical activity in what felt like a desert was too exhausting.

Where to stay in Bagan

Hotel or hostel? Choosing accommodation type is entirely up to you, but then, which town of Bagan do you choose?

Any website will tell you that Bagan has three main regions for accommodations: New Bagan, Old Bagan and Nyaung-U. Without having researched this at all, we went by hostel ratings and went with Baobabed Hostel Bagan .

Upon arriving, we found out that it was located along the side of the road that connects Nyaung-U with Old Bagan, and wasn’t really in either town. The hostel property was in a slight dead zone, town-wise, but faced an E-bike rental shop, was next to another hotel and had a restaurant-laundry service-souvenir shop to the other side.

If you got on a bicycle and rode even five minutes, you’d probably see a pagoda in a field, which was pretty cool. Where else in the world can you do that? For this reason, we didn’t mind not staying in the center of any of the three towns.

What’s the difference between the Bagan towns?

Which is the best Bagan town for travelers? As for the three towns, Old Bagan is the oldest (hence the name), New Bagan was built in order to support more tourism and is built in a grid pattern of small streets and Nyaung-U is a cluster of streets with guesthouses and some shops. All are dusty. All are hot. All have proximity to temples, so you can’t go wrong, no matter what you choose.

Best sunset and sunrise spots in Bagan (after climbing ban)

Once upon a time before 2019, you could climb all the pagodas, temples and stupas if you could figure out a way how to. During our visit, we found out that this was no longer the case, and most blogs we read for our research listed heaps of climbable temples and pagodas for wonderful views that were no longer options for us due to new (somewhat enforced) regulations.

We found sunrise and sunset spots by asking hostel staff, who were most aware of the current situation and climbing ban. They were able to recommend a few options, but for times when they ran out of ideas, we ventured off on our own and sometimes lucked out.

The first morning, we went to Sulamuni Manmade Sunset Hill , which was built as a man-made hill to be a tourist viewpoint once the climbing ban was in place. We didn’t think the view was so impressive, so we wouldn’t recommend it.

The second morning, we went to Mimalaung Kyaung Temple , which was recommended by the hostel staff at Baobabed . This pagoda indeed had a viewing deck, and it wasn’t overcrowded or anything. We were the first ones there, at 5:30 am, and got to see the starry sky. Use our guide for how to take photos at night .

How to take star photos at night pagoda temple Bagan Myanmar Burma

By 6:00 am there were about 15-20 visitors, but not much more. All things considered, this wasn’t bad at all.

For sunset on day two, we were recommended to get in touch with the father of one of the girls in the hostel in her village, which we did! After giving us a village tour, he took us to a collection of renovated pagodas outside the village, and took us to one we could climb via an internal stone staircase. To our surprise, we were joined by three other travelers who found the same place.

Secret pagodas for view of sunset Bagan Myanmar Burma

For sunrise on day three, this is when we kinda-sorta got scammed, as we detailed more in our Myanmar travel guide . We had taken a rented E-bike down the dirt road near the hostel and were feeling a dab lost, until a man on a motorbike asked if we wanted a recommendation of a sunrise spot, and we naturally said yes.

He led the way to a cluster of secret pagodas and stupas we never otherwise would have found, and after the sun rose, he brought us into a pagoda and showed us paintings that he was selling, saying, of course, he really wanted us to buy one. We actually did buy one, because they were nice, and we negotiated a price. It’s currently hanging in our living room and reminds us of this day.

For sunset on day three, we chose to stay close to the hostel and aimed to find a spot within a 10-minute radius. We had seen a few clusters of pagodas, some more populated with tourists than others, and pulled into the driveway of a collection of pagodas and a larger temple (which turned out to be Khaymingha Pagoda).

Dan and I split up and went to find good photos, and I found a lone pagoda , with a location pin, facing a field with a view toward the West and some stupas that were outlined against the sky. It’s here that we saw a fiery sunset with another couple who was on the hunt for this type of view. In conclusion, sometimes you have to find your own views and luck out in your own way.

Can you climb the temples and pagodas in Bagan?

Since 2018, you can only climb a select few. Below, we’ll share the locations of the pagodas we were able to climb. We saved the locations of them

Which temples have a good view in Bagan?

While we didn’t get to climb so many pagodas because of the ban, we did find a small pagoda with no name that was a few feet on a tiny hill above a field, and it was here that we watched an epic sunset with three stupas outlined against the sky. The location in Google Maps is here.

Mimalaung Kyaung was a great place to see sunrise, and because there were only 20 other visitors there by the time the sun was up, it wasn’t overwhelming or crowded at all.

Best Instagrammable temples to visit in Bagan

In a combination of avoiding massive tourist groups and seeing a variety of Buddhist temple architecture, we visited three temples that were very much alive with worshipers, and made great photo locations. We’ll detail them here.

Ananda Temple

Well worth a visit because it’s been renovated in the past few decades and is made of white stone, this temple is pretty big, and built symmetrically, so we had some fun finding our way out. There were some tour groups here, but not so many, and there’s parking for your E-bike right outside the entrance. There are no epic views to be had because there’s nowhere to climb and no lookout points, but we liked walking around the exterior.

Bu Paya (Bupaya Pagoda)

Bu Paya has a big gold stupa and faces the river. You could alternatively go here for sunset. At the time when we went, it was busy with locals and other Buddhist visitors who were praying.

Manuha Temple

Manuha Temple was recommended to us by locals, so you know it’s legit! It was really busy with Buddhist worshippers and seemed more authentic than the others, which were rebuilt and renovated to look beautiful for tourism (it seemed).

Shwesandaw Pagoda

Shwesandaw Pagoda was formerly one of the popular pagodas to climb, but alas, no more — all its stairways have been closed off and maybe it’s even lost its popularity for that reason. We went here after sunrise and liked being some of the only visitors. This made it a really serene visit. We also liked the pagodas that framed the dirt road, even more as a scene for taking photos.

Which temples can you still climb in Bagan?

If you are defining temples as the largest and most famous temples, we did not hear that any are still able to be climbed. We did not climb any. We climbed smaller, shorter pagodas (and got some solid views), which we’re mentioning below.

Which pagodas can you climb in Bagan? (Climbing ban update)

Since 2018 (so we heard while were in Bagan), many pagodas are now closed for climbing. We visited Shwesandaw Pagoda, listed as a pagoda to climb from reports before 2018, and it was gated off for climbing. We were the only foreign travelers there.

As mentioned, we did not find so many pagodas to climb because of the ban, but a local brought us to this pagoda that has an inside staircase and you can sit on the top platform (hope you’re not afraid of heights!). This pagoda is in a cluster of pagodas outside the village of Myin Ka Bar Village, Sein Gone Quarter, Bagan.

How to go from Yangon to Bagan

travel from yangon to bagan

While Yangon is no longer the capital of Myanmar, it remains the largest city in the country, and is a popular starting point for many visitors. Also known as Rangoon, travelers flock to the city to take in its colonial architecture, which sits side by side with stunning, ancient Buddhist temples and pagodas, some of which are believed to be over 2,000 years old.

There’s much to explore in Myanmar however, and one of the most popular choices is the breathtaking city of Bagan. Nestled in a curve of the mighty Ayeyarwady River, the city is famed for ever more ancient temples and pagodas, authentic Burmese cuisine, and a stunning backdrop. It’s the ideal place to soak up the local culture and escape the more touristy attractions.

It’s a long way from Yangon to Bagan, with around 390 miles between the two cities. However, sites comparable to Machu Picchu and Angkor Wat await, making it well worth the trek. Overland routes take in an array of bustling villages, humble countryside, and ancient wonders, whereas flying can massively reduce journey times. Here’s what you need to know.

Yangon to Bagan by bus

Yangon to Bagan by bus

Time  – 9 to 10 hours Cost  – tickets start at $12 but can go up to $23, depending on the bus company Comfort – 4/5

There are four bus providers that will take you from Yangon to Bagan, including JJ Express and Bagan Min Tha. All buses provide amenities such as air conditioning, while VIP services include additional features such as snacks, movies, and an onboard steward. JJ Express runs a VIP service once daily; leaving at 20:00, it takes almost 10 hours to reach Bagan Shwe Pyi Highway Bus Terminal, and, at $23 per adult, it is also the high-end option.

If you’re looking for a more flexible schedule, Bagan Min Tha is a good choice, with four buses per day: 8:00, 19:00, 20:00, and 21:00, and the latter arriving in Bagan Shwe Pyi in as little as 9 hours. Bagan Min Tha is also a cheaper option, at $12 if you buy in advance. E-tickets for these companies and more can be booked online at 12Go.asia . Other companies offer more services, most of which depart in the evening and travel through the night. There are 2 daytime buses however, departing at 07:30 and 08:00 respectively.

A night bus might be your best option since the road is quite long. However you’ll miss out on some of the scenery.

Buses depart daily from the Highway Bus Station on Aung Mingalar Street, near the junction with Sa Gaing Street. The bus station is located 2.5 miles from the Wai Bar Gi Train Station and 13 miles from the Yangon Central Railway Station, and is best reached by taxi. It’s good to bear in mind that the bus station is quite far from the city center, and getting there will be easier if you depart to Bagan with a night bus, in order to avoid most of the daytime traffic in the city.

The road from Yangon to Bagan is tarmacked, which means that the journey there will be fairly smooth and without too many bumps. There are no toilet facilities on the buses, however, there are two or three stops along the way, and the staff are accommodating. Day buses also include a half hour lunch break. It’s worth noting that the AC is always on, and while this will be great during the day, you may find it rather cold on night buses. Blankets are provided, but it’s best to bring warm clothes along.

Yangon to Bagan by plane

Yangon to Bagan by plane

Time – 1.5 hours + transfers to and from airport Price – $110-130 Comfort – 4/5

Given the fact that there’s 390 miles between the two cities, the fastest way to get from Yangon to Bagan is by plane. The flight itself takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes, and there are several airline companies with departures throughout the day, such as Air KBZ and Air Thanlwin. However, with prices starting at $110, flights can be quite expensive. You can try booking them in advance, or check for deals during the off-season. Prices, availability, and ticket purchases for a variety of airlines can be found online at 12Go .

Yangon Airport is located 11 miles north of the train station, and the best way to get there is by taxi, as there are no public transport options that will take you all the way there. If you do decide to use public transport, look for buses heading to Sel Maing Kone or Maha Si, and from there, you can either walk the 1.5 miles to the terminal, or grab a taxi, which costs around $1.

Yangon to Bagan Yangon Airport

Flying is fast, comfortable, rarely delayed and saves you time that is better used to explore the hidden gems the ancient city has to offer.

It’s best to take out some cash from the ATM or use the exchange offices in the Yangon Airport, as the Bagan airport in Nyaung U does not provide these services. Also, if you’ve booked accommodation with the top or mid-range hotels in Bagan, ask if they also provide transfer from the airport – the majority of them will provide this service for free.

Yangon to Bagan by train

Yangon to Bagan by train

Time – 17.5 hours Price – $4-18 Comfort – 2/5 to 4/5 (depending on ticket type)

Although there’s a direct railway line connecting Yangon and Bagan, getting there by train is the most time consuming option, with the trip lasting up to 17 hours. There is currently only one train route available, the daily train #61, which departs Yangon at 4pm and arrives at the Nyaung U station at 10am the following day. It has several carriages with varying classes, from the unpadded, wooden seats of the ordinary class, to the spacious sleeping cars.

The price for a train ticket is just as varied, ranging from $4 to $18, depending on the type of seat, as well as where you buy them from. Tickets are usually cheaper if you buy them directly from the train station, although it’s best to book sleeping cars in advance at sites such as 12Go.asia , as they are often in short supply. It’s also good to bear in mind that sleeping cars are not available during the off-season.

Taking the train is a great way to immerse yourself in the Burmese culture, whether it’s by interacting with the local passengers, or simply enjoying the views.

Given the long road by train, it pays to invest in a bit of comfort, and even if you don’t want to treat yourself to a sleeping car, it’s best to get at least a second class seat. Your back will thank you, and in the morning you’ll feel ready to start your adventure in Bagan. You can also buy snacks on the train, yet it’s good to remember that, unlike on VIP buses, blankets are not provided unless you’re in a sleeping car. This is an important detail to remember, as nights can be quite chilly. On the other hand, there’s no AC on the trains, and even though upper class cars might have a fan, you will need to dress accordingly for both hot and cold.

Yangon Central railway station

The Yangon Central Railway Station is, as the name implies, located very centrally, and easy to get to. In Bagan, you will be dropped off at the Bagan Railway Station, which is located 2 miles away from the airport, and about half a mile away from the Highway Bus Station. Taxis are available on site, although it’s often better to walk the short distance to the highway and get a cheaper taxi ride from there.

Whether you take to the skies, rumble along on the train, or journey by bus, we hope you enjoy the ride and wish you safe travels!

Yangon to Bagan FAQ

The cheapest way to get from Yangon to Bagan is to take the train. While the journey is long at 17 and a half hours, it’s a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture. You can browse ticket options and book online at 12Go.asia , with tickets starting at around $4 for ordinary class seating, and increasing to $18 for a bed in a sleeper car.

3-Day Bagan Itinerary: The Best Route to Explore Myanmar’s Ancient City on E-Bikes

travel from yangon to bagan

The best temple hopping route in Bagan — from iconic pagodas to photographers’ secret sunset/sunrise spots!

Team Shot Above Monastery - Bagan Itinerary

I thought I understood the meaning of the word dazzling before I came to Bagan — turns out I did not. Much like the victims of Medusa, the glorious sight of infinite pagodas smothered across acres of golden sand bedazzled me into static stone.

The undisputed best way to explore Bagan is by an e-bike, which is essentially a seated scooter powered by an electric engine. It looks like a motorbike to the inexperienced eye, but slower, safer, and easier to balance on.

We’ve put together a comprehensive e-bike route to guide you along the roads you can take, the food you can eat, and the attractions worth visiting in this charming city where the movement of the sun takes center stage. For how to get to Bagan  and tips for first-time e-bike riders , click on the links or head to the bottom of this article.

The Best Route for Exploring Bagan’s Temples

E-Biking in Bagan - Bagan Itinerary

The Google Map below shows you the route we recommend to explore Bagan with on an e-bike — with different temples, sunrise/sunset spots, and food places for each day. If you have three days in the city, this guide is the ideal one to follow. Feel free to save it onto your phone for easier navigation.

Bagan is split into three main towns: Nyaung-U , Old Bagan , and New Bagan . In and around Old Bagan is where most of its ancient structures reside, while New Bagan is now home to most of the city’s residents. The local airport, bus station and various budget hostels reside in Nyaung-U.

Without further ado, let us break down the best way to explore Bagan on an e-bike.

Day 1: An Introduction to Bagan

Ebikes in Bagan Myanmar - Bagan Itinerary

We begin in New Bagan, where plenty of affordable tourist-friendly hostels reside. You’ll be able to find plenty of e-bike rental stalls that will set you back K5,000–K8,000 a day. We stayed at the Ostello Bello Hostel , which had one right in front of it.

Day 1 will focus on the most popular destinations in the city, the perfect introduction to this charming ol’ paradise.

Lawka Nanda Pagoda

Lawka Nanda Pagoda - Bagan Itinerary

This magnificent golden structure is located right next to the Irrawaddy River and is the popular subject of worship for many locals around the area. You’ll find many improvised stalls on the way up, a feature of most well-known temples in Bagan.

Bagan Archaeological Museum

Bagan Archaeological Museum - Bagan Itinerary

I believe that to truly understand a country’s culture, you have to visit its museums. The Bagan Archaeological Museum gave us an insight into the city’s history, languages, religious evolution, and even the hairstyles that were trendy in previous centuries. We recommend this as one of your first stops to provide context of cultural heritage you will come across during your time here.

Entrance Fee: K5,000 Opening Hours: 8AM – 4PM

Ananda Temple

Ananda Temple - Bagan Itinerary

This particular temple was built by a king who ordered its architects executed as well. The reason? He didn’t want anything else like it to be built anywhere else — and it worked. The complex is shaped like a Greek cross and its structures are wonderfully preserved till today.

Lunch at The Moon Vegetarian Restaurant

The Moon Restaurant - Bagan Itinerary

We wouldn’t have recommended a vegetarian restaurant if it wasn’t so darn good. The Moon (Be Kind to Animals) offers up 20 pages worth of great vegetarian food in its menu, and even better pancakes with ice cream (K,3000). To get there, head towards the centre of Old Bagan where several restaurants can be found within a kilometre of each other.

Shwesandaw Pagoda

Shwesandaw Pagoda - Bagan Itinerary

A majestic pagoda made up of five terraces leading up to a small golden stupa above. It is now forbidden to climb up its inviting staircases, but makes for intriguing viewing nonetheless.

Shwegu Gyi Phaya

Shwegu Gyi Phaya Drone - Bagan Itinerary

Covered in riveting shades of raven black, the Shwegu Gyi is an odd gem compared to its shiny golden friends. Get your face painted with thanaka (a traditional Burmese cosmetic) for free, and buy custom-made lacquerware from locals who have set up shop here.

Sunset at Bu Paya Pagoda

Bu Paya Sunset- Bagan Itinerary

The word “Bu” stands for gourd, and “Paya” means pagoda, so what you see here speaks for itself. The current structure is a reconstructed version of the original Bu Paya believed to have been built around 200AD, but was unfortunately badly damaged in the 1975 earthquake. It remains a popular place of worship and many flock to the area to catch the beautiful sunsets daily.

*Pro-tip: Many boatsmen by the beach will offer to take you out into the river to witness the sunset for around K5,000. Try asking your hostel if they have any partner vendors first — our hostel, Ostello Bello, offered the same rides for only K800 per pax.

Dinner by the Irrawaddy River

Dinner by Irrawaddy River - Bagan Itinerary

Just beneath the Bu Paya are several food stalls serving up fresh, simple Burmese food by the riverside. After soaking in your first Bagan sunset, order a bowl of rice with several small curry dishes for about K1,500.

Day 2: Off the Beaten Track

Backpack around Asia - Bagan Itinerary

Get ready for a long day ahead, as we’ll be venturing into more exciting, off-beat places further away from the cluster in Old Bagan. From here on, some pagodas will only have numbers and coordinates attached to them as they don’t currently have a name.

Sunrise at Ta Wet Hpaya

Photo Taking at Ta Wet Hpaya - Bagan Itinerary

The sun rises early at 5:55AM in Bagan (April 2019), so the true golden hour to catch its ascent is at about 5:30AM. Get up early and make your way to Ta Wet Hpaya to witness one of the most glorious sights there is — an amazing combination of hot air balloons rising over the horizon in perfect tandem with the amber glow of the sun. You could stay here for at least an hour, taking pretty portraits underneath a picture perfect sky.

Pagoda 761 - 3 - Bagan Itinerary

As we were leaving Ta Wet Hpaya, several clear paths of sand to our left led towards an enticing entrance to this cluster of pagodas. Biking through the large clearing leading up to these structures felt as if we’ve chanced upon an undiscovered village.

Winido Temple

Winido - Liberating The Spirit - Bagan Itinerary

Winido is actually a congregation of several small, but delightful temples. Its interior contains impressive paintings that date back to the late period of Bagan.

Lunch at Starbeam Bistro (Old Bagan)

Starbeam Bistro - TripAdvisor - Bagan Itinerary

This neat little bistro has two outlets in Bagan. It goes to show how well the first one must have done initially! We didn’t patronise this particular restaurant during our time here, but the raving reviews online made us regret we didn’t.

Lemyethna Temple

Lemyethna Temple - Fine Art America - Bagan Itinerary

The Lemyethna is also known as the Temple of Four Faces. Resting on a platform, it’s decked out in pure white and decorated with bits of gold tips. You’ll also be able to find remnants of ancient Buddhist stories inside.

Shwezigon Pagoda

Shwezigon Pagoda - Justgola and Stefan Munder - Bagan Itinerary

The Shwezigon Pagoda may be someways off Old Bagan, but it’s certainly one of the most sacred places in the city. The entirely gold-plated temple houses many precious Buddhist relics and is an important pilgrimage site. In December, thousands of devotees flock to Shwezigon to pay respect to the Nat spirits believed to reside here.

Sunset at Pagoda North of Htilominlo

Sunset Above Pagoda in Bagan - Bagan Itinerary

This particular pagoda doesn’t have a name, but it’s home to a spectacular view of the sunset. We found ourselves huddled together at the narrow platforms on top together with 10+ other people that evening, but it’s certainly less crowded than some of the other pagodas closer to the centre of town. Follow the coordinates below as Google Maps doesn’t have it listed as a location just yet.

( Coordinates:  21°10’55.4″N 94°52’39.1″E)

Dinner at Bibo Restaurant

The streets of Nyaung-U can get pretty busy at night, but this classy outdoor restaurant exudes a calmer persona to help you unwind after a long day of temple hopping. The food may take a while to come, but the Arakan Fisherman’s Soup (K3,000) and Bagan Styled Pork Curry (K4,000) is worth the wait.

Day 3: Finding Hidden Gems

Overview of Bagan - Bagan Itinerary

When it comes to locating places that are fascinating and not already hogged by tourists, sometimes the best way is simply to follow the advice of those who live there. Day 3 is all about the less-frequented, but nonetheless charming sights Bagan has to offer.

Sunrise at Pagoda 669

Bagan Sunrise Atop Monastery - Bagan Itinerary

Whilst we were frantically scampering around on our bikes looking for an ideal spot to capture more picturesque shots of the morning sun, a young Burmese man caught up beside us and asked if we wanted him to show us a secret  place. Although skeptical, we lacked a better plan, and agreed for him to take the lead. True to his word, he led us to this uninhabited pagoda with a great view far from anyone else.

Breakfast at Shwe Ou Food Garden

Shwe Ou Food Garden - Bagan Itinerary

Head back to New Bagan for a hearty breakfast at Shwe Ou Food Garden. We recommend having the Irrawaddy River Prawn Curry (K7,000), Butter Curry Chicken with Potato (K3,000) and their wide selection of ice-cream (K2,000) and coffees.

Htilominlo Temple

Htilominlo Temple - Tour Yangon - Bagan Itinerary

The Htilominlo Temple was named after the King who built it, and it stands three storeys high on the spot where he was chosen to be the successor of the throne. The terraces used to contain images depicting stories of the various lives of the Buddha, until an earthquake consigned them to the past.

Alotawpyae Pagoda

Alo Daw Pyi Pagoda - TripAdvisor - Bagan Itinerary

Unlike most of the other pagodas you’ll encounter, the Alotawpyae Pagoda tends to be occupied by monks and other devotees performing their prayers. It’s an interesting glimpse into the life of a local.

Myazigon Pagoda

Myazigon Pagoda - Liberating the Spirit - Bagan Itinerary

This pagoda is quite the beauty. Though relatively short, the three short flights of white stairs surrounded by its protective guardians on each side serve as a flawless base for its golden stupa centrepiece.

Lunch at Yar Pyi Restaurant

Yar Pyi Restaurant - Bagan Itinerary

You might have noticed the Yar Pyi restaurant opposite Day 1’s lunch spot. The food here is equally delicious, and the lady boss (who doubles as chef) loves to strike a good conversation. Make sure you order the Guacamole & Papadoms (K3,500).

Dhammayangyi Temple

Dhammayangyi Temple - World Top Top - Bagan Itinerary

The uncompleted Dhammayangyi Temple is the largest of them all here in Bagan. The story goes that King Narathu had attempted to build a humungous temple to make up for the bad karma he gained from killing his father and brother to take the throne, although we’re not sure it works that way, tbh.

Sunset at Thitsarwadi Temple

Thitsarwadi Temple - TripSavvy - Bagan Itinerary

Hidden in the outskirts, it’s unlikely you’ll find many tourists venturing out here. But that’s precisely what would make this a great alternative place to catch the sunset. You’ll also be able to view the neighbouring majestic Dhammayazaka Pagoda nearby.

Dinner at La Pizza

La Pizza Bagan - La Terrazza - Bagan Itinerary

This marks the end of your biking adventure, so celebrate with some freshly-made, wood-fired pizza! Located along Kayay Street in New Bagan, La Pizza serves up a feast worthy of commendation from all of us food lovers. Order the Margherita and Seafood Pizzas (K7,000–K12,000).

Alternative Route: Roam Free Like the Wind

Drone Shot Above Old Bagan - Bagan Itinerary

To many sensible travellers (and my editor when she reads this), travelling in a place you’re not familiar with without a plan is blasphemy. That’s why we put this guide together. But frankly… the times I’ve felt most enchanted by the beauty of Bagan were when pagoda after gorgeous pagoda dawned on me without a name.

After all, we’re not travelling to tick boxes of a checklist, we travel to experience the unknown. I’d rather not have a destination in mind and let the unbeaten paths take me on a bronzy adventure, to places I didn’t have to label in my head. So feel free to roam around if that’s what your daredevil heart desires.

Important Notes on Exploring Bagan

Bagan Drone Shot - Bagan Itinerary

Here’s the part where we’ll sound like overprotective mothers, but bear with us.

Be Respectful of Signs and Customs

It is customary to remove your shoes before you enter any temple or religious monument in Bagan. You will also come across several structures with signs that forbid you to climb them. There are legitimate reasons for doing so (e.g. preservation efforts due to increase in tourism), so follow these formalities.

Be Careful While Climbing and Riding

There were several instances while climbing up the pagodas when loose bricks either chipped off or gave way. Exercise caution or make your way up slowly. These structures are centuries old and aren’t as sturdy as they used to be.

Also, always adhere to the standard traffic rules and be gracious on the roads. Zooming across dusty roads will get your spectacles or contact lenses perpetually murdered with sand, so don’t hesitate to stop safely by the road if your vision gets blurry.

Getting to Bagan

Sunrise over Bagan - Bagan Itinerary

There are currently no direct international flights to Bagan’s Nyaung-U Airport. So the fastest way to get to there is to first fly to Yangon, then take a subsequent flight to Bagan. If you’re looking for something more affordable, pre-book an overnight bus from Yangon to Bagan for just under S$25.

The bus leaves at two timings (8PM and 9PM) daily from the Aung Mingalar Highway Bus Station. The ride is 10 hours long with toilet stops throughout the night, and you’ll arrive at the bus terminal in Nyaung-U at 6AM/7AM the next morning. The taxi ride from the bus terminal to your accommodation should fall somewhere between K2,000 and K8,000.

Note:  All tourists visiting Bagan will have to pay a fee of K25,000 (~S$22.40) for an  “Archaeological Zone Pass”  that entitles visitors entry into four main settlements within three days. Remember to always carry the ticket with you as you may be stopped for random checks by the local police.

Suggestions for First-Time E-Bike Riders

Bagan E-Bike Facing Sunrise - Bagan Itinerary

Non-bikers, let’s get one thing straight: You don’t need to know how to ride a bike. You need to learn how to. About 15 minutes of falling, clumsy imbalance and passers-by laughing later, you’ll forget you were afraid of jumping on that bike in the first place. Here are some tips having once been an e-bike virgin myself:

Go Light on the Throttle

The handle on your right doubles up as the throttle, and twisting it towards you propels you forward. Don’t crank it all the way back straight. Twist it ever so slightly, then rest your feet in front of you the moment the bike inches forward.

Allow the Momentum to Help You Balance

Riding an e-bike is very similar to riding a bicycle. The initial stumbling block for many is the fear that you’ll fall off the bike. When the bike starts moving initially, your instinctive reaction might be to put your feet back down on the ground. Counter this by balancing with your body and handles, and simply  have faith that you will not fall . And you won’t.

Twist the Throttle Forward When You Break

This might be a little unconventional, but it works for me. Somehow, my instinct is to twist the throttle back (accelerating) when I panic, which results in me losing whatever control I already had of the bike and fly forwards. By periodically twisting it forward whilst I’m cruising along, I’m training my brain to associate that motion with braking and not accelerating.

However, if you’re insistent on an alternative form of transport because you simply can’t trust your motor-skills, you can always hire a private taxi to bring you around for approximately S$25 a day.

Team Shot - Bagan Itinerary

And there you have it! After three days of non-stop temple hopping in the ancient city of Bagan, my heart sank in its soft sand just thinking about leaving the place behind. The ancient city has countless more precious gems waiting to be uncovered, but we’ll leave that to the explorer in you to find and share with the rest of the world.

Plan a trip to Bagan - 2 to 3 days itineraries

Start planning, best known temples and pagodas list, tips for traveling in bagan.

Bagan, a historical ancient city of Myanmar(Burma), a Buddhist cultural relic, and a famous tourist resort, is located on the west bank of the Irrawaddy River in central Myanmar.

The ideal time-frame for a first trip to Bagan is 2–3 days, for seeing pagodas and the spectacular sunrise or sunset. Investigate the historic pagoda jungle by horse-driven cart, enjoying the sunset from the top of a pagoda. Do not miss the hot-air-balloon ride over the Bagan plains at sunrise – definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

For many foreigners, Bagan is the gateway for them to start learning about Myanmar, and some of them even learn more about Bagan than they do of the country as a whole.

As for the locals, Bagan is where their pride comes from, and they always say that Bagan is the landmark of their country.

Between the 11th and 13th centuries, about 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were built in the Bagan plains. But at present, only 2,200 temples and pagodas still remain to tell you about its history.

No one can guarantee that the remaining temples or pagodas are free from any geologic hazard, so the city deserves a visit before they become history too.

Imagine ascending in a hot-air balloon over 2,000 pagodas and temples that are scattered across the 25-square-kilometer plains, just like gemstones dropped on a jade plate. That may be one of the most memorable moments in your life.

It was reported that the Myanmar government will submit its draft application to UNESCO's World Heritage Center in September 2017. If the application and the inspection go well, the Bagan Archaeological Zone may become the first World Heritage Site in Myanmar in 2019.

Don't miss the chance to get close to the next World Heritage Site.

Discover real reviews of Highlights Travel Family 's best-rated service across trusted platforms.

If you travel by regular means, such as private car or bike, you may soon get temple fatigue.

However, if you take other forms of transport, such as a hot-air balloon, horse-drawn cart, or cruise, when visiting them it will make your tour more interesting and allow you to enjoy the beauty of Bagan from different perspectives.

What can't be missed

Enjoy sunrises or sunsets on the pagodas

In September 2017, Myanmar will formally submit the application to the UNESCO's World Heritage Center and, in order to protect the temples and pagodas while the application goes through, the activity of climbing up the pagodas may be slowly banned.

In December 2016, Ms. Aung San Suu Kyialso appealed to the tourists to stop climbing on the pagodas.

That is to say, being able to climb up a temple or pagoda to watch the sunrise or sunset will also become part of Bagan's history.

Enjoy a sunrise from a hot-air balloon

A hot-air balloon ride is not a budget-friendly experience but most people consider it to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is also the only way to experience the breathtaking scale of Bagan's historical district.

When the hot-air balloon gently takes off into the morning sky, everything is covered by the dark. But when the balloon unceasingly ascends and is flying, the sun's rays slowly break through the clouds, and the outlines of the temples and pagodas gradually appear. The sun rises slowly, and the view becomes wider and wider.

The mist embraces the temples and pagodas, just like a fairyland. The sunshine son the red-brick temples and pagodas, and they look as though they are twin kling with golden lights.

It's not only spectacular but also magical. When you are flying over the historical district, it's like you are engaging in dialogues with history.

The flight will definitely be safe and smooth with Western pilots and modern equipment. The pilots are all exceptionally qualified. They will also be considerate and rotate the balloon so that everybody can see the red-brick temples whilst the other balloons are dotted in the sky around you.

Travel by different means

If you are afraid of seeing too many temples and pagodas, which might give you aesthetic fatigue, traveling by different means, such as private car, cycling, hot-air balloon, horse-drawn cart, or even trekking, may pull you slightly out of this type of fatigue.

These are the different ways to show you the beauty of Bagan from different angles, and each of them has its own merits.

Day 1 pagodas and sunset

Bagan arrival

Proposal 1: Visit pagodas in the afternoon and before the sunset, by boarding a boat and cruising across the Irrawaddy River. The boatman will prepare some refreshments and the boat will reach the center of the river to stop before sunset.

You will be away from the noise and dust, quietly sitting in the boat, watching the glittering river, enjoying delicious snacks, listening to the wind blowing over the trees and the lake as well as the birdsong. When the sun slowly sinks, the clouds become colorful due to the reflection of the sunlight.

Proposal 2: Visit pagodas in the afternoon by horse-drawn cart. The surrounding pagodas are all more than 800 years old and there is no sign of modernization.

As the horse-drawn cart gallops through the forest of temples, the dust is blowing and the hooves are clattering.Imagine you have stepped into a time tunnel and are witnessing history.

One hour before the sunset, you can climb up a high pagoda, such as the Shwezigon Pagoda, and wait for one of the most breathtaking sunsets of your life.

Day 2 Sunrise and pagodas

There are two ways to enjoy the sunrise in Bagan: climb up a pagoda or fly in a hot-air balloon.

If you prefer to watch the sunrise on a pagoda, the best time to leave your hotel is at about 6 am. If you prefer to enjoy the sunrise from a different angle, then a hot-air balloon adventure is highly recommended.

You will be collected from your hotel at about 5:20 am and, at the launch site, there will be fruit and cakes as well as coffee. When the balloon ascends with the sun, the breathtaking site of stupa after stupa will appear through the delicate mist, which will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

After the balloon has landed, champagne and pastries will be served to celebrate the safe landing and a certificate will also be awarded to you to celebrate your courage. This will be one of the highlights of your trip to Bagan, as well as to Myanmar.

The Asia Highlights team has handpicked some of the 2,200 pagodas, which are either the most famous of the temples or the most distinctive. In short, they are absolutely not to be missed for your Bagan trip.

1. Shwezigon Pagoda

This standswith Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon as one of the sacred pagodas in Myanmar. It's the most efficacious pagoda in Bagan, and the prayers are the most frequently answered. It is the oldest pagoda in Bagan and the best pagoda from which to enjoy the sunset.

2. Thatbyinnyu Phaya

This is the highest pagoda, standing at 67 meters. It used to be the best place to watch a sunrise and sunset; however, in order to protect the pagoda, the stairs to the top have been blocked.

3. Ananda Temple

This features a standing statue of Buddha with perfect proportions. However, since September 2016, a large-scale repair has ruined its natural beauty.

It's usually very hot at noon in Bagan. It's a good choice to choose a restaurant to enjoy lunch or to go back to your hotel for a swim in the pool.

You need to stand barefoot or sit on the cold ground while waiting for the sunrise, so it's necessary to take warm clothing.

Do not hide your excitement from the camera when taking a trip in a hot-air balloon. If you ask politely, other passengers will take a photo of you, which will be a good memory for you.

All About The Yangon to Bagan Sleeper Train

Oh the infamous journey from Yangon to Bagan by sleeper train. From honest reviews to train bookings and ticket prices, we’re here to tell you all about the sleeper train from Yangon to Bagan in Myanmar. Traveling is all about experiences and this train ride is one to say the least.

All aboard to Bagan, Myanmar!

The Yangon to Bagan Sleeper Train

Jump Ahead To:

Yangon To Bagan Train Ticket Booking

First things first, where to buy your train tickets for the Yangon to Bagan sleeper train. Well, you have two options . Regardless which option you go with, it’s best to buy tickets 1-3 days in advance of your desired departure date.

Option 1 – Buy Tickets In Person

Don’t ask us why, but tickets for the Yangon to Bagan train are NOT sold at Yangon’s Central Train Station. Instead, they are sold at the “ Myanma Railways Booking Office ” – and no, that was not a typo, “Myanma” is the actual name.

Once at the Booking Office, wait in the queue and approach the window once it’s your turn. Let the teller know which ticket option you would like and what day you want to book your sleeper / night train for.

IMPORTANT: You must have your passport with you and bookings must be made in Kyat (Myanmar currency) – Debit and credit cards are not accepted

If you’re a little worried about going to right location to buy tickets for the sleeper train, check the map below. The Myanma Railways Booking Office (purple pin) is located a few blocks away from Bogyoke Aung San market.

Option 2 – Buy Tickets Online

While there is no official site to book online through , you are able to book with a tour agency like 12go Asia . To reserve your Yangon to Bagan train ticket, book below.

–> Book your train ticket here

Sleeper Train Ticket Prices

Now, before you book your sleeper train tickets from Yangon to Bagan, understand you have several ticket options to choose from.

  • Upper Class Sleeper Car – $16 USD per person
  • Upper Class Seat – $10 USD per person
  • Second Class Seat – $8 USD per person
  • Third Class Seat – $5 USD per person
  • Children: Children 3 years old and under travel for free where children under 10 pay half fare.

NOTE: Prices may fluctuate and you may pay more as a “foreigner” but you can expect to pay, on average, around the prices listed above.

First class sleeper car is the option we went with. We know what you may be thinking “oh sleeper car, sounds lovely”, right? Ha, well in comparison to the other options, yes. But don’t you worry, we’ll get to that a bit more a little further down in the post.

When To Buy The Bagan Sleeper Train Tickets?

Like we said above, do your best to buy your Yangon to Bagan train tickets a few days ahead of your desired departure date. We tried to buy tickets the day before our desired departure date and no luck – sold out.

With the tickets being so out, we had to leave 4 days later than originally planned or intended. We took every advantage of those extra days and did a few day trip to Hpa An – so no loss for us.

However, if you are on a strict timeline and itinerary, w e advise buying your tickets as soon as you can to avoid any potential delays.

Yangon to Bagan Sleeper Train Timetable

Looking for a train schedule? It’s a short one. There is one train that departs daily at 4:00pm from Yangon to Bagan. This is the sleeper train / night train.

There are no trains that travel during the day from Yangon to Bagan. If you would like to travel during the day, may we suggest traveling from Yangon to Bagan by bus .

How Long is The Train Ride from Yangon to Bagan

Around 17 hours – yes, you read that correctly, 17 hours . For us, that 17 hours ride turned into a 20 hours ride. We left Yangon at 4:30 pm and arrived at Bagan’s train station around 1:00 pm the next day.

From what we understand, this is typical. The train always ends up running behind and takes longer than expected .

That bring’s us to our next point. The train from Yangon to Bagan is not a direct line . There are numerous stops along the way for locals to get on and off and for goods to be loaded and unloaded off the train.

While these stop add to your train ride, the stops are not long, which is nice.

Where Does The Sleeper Train Depart From in Yangon?

Now, to not add to any confusion or stress on the day you leave, understand where you buy your train ticket is NOT where you depart from.

You bought your tickets from Myanma Railways Booking Office and you’ll depart from Yangon’s Central Train Station located on Kun Chan Road.

What To Pack For The Sleeper Train to Bagan?

The biggest thing to pack is FOOD . You’re on the train for 17+ hours, so you’ll be getting hungry. Snacks are a must if you’re going to survive the sleeper train from Yangon to Bagan.

You can pick up snacks from a local market or a convenient store in Yangon. Some snack options that we picked up was a loaf of bread and some jam.

Once on the train, there really isn’t much of an opportunity to get off the train, even though there are stops. However, there are vendors that come to the window and sell some food items, so don’t panic if you forget some food or find yourself hungry.

As for the rest of the items, you’ll have your luggage / backpacks with you so you should be set but a few essentials to pack are….

  • Toilet Paper  (there is none on the train)
  • Sleep sheet (the beds are super dusty)
  • Deck of cards (to help pass the time)
  • Motion sickness medicine
  • Sleeping mask
  • Headphones + downloaded content

What’s First Class Like On The Sleeper Train to Bagan?

Being completely honest in order to set your expectation…This first class sleeper car is far from what Western societies define as first class.

The train from Yangon to Bagan is old, and well worn to say the least, but it’s full of adventure and character. The sleeper cars themselves are dusty and we question if they’ve ever been cleaned outside of the occasional walkthrough to pick up trash.

There big metal bodies that shake and rattle the entire 17-hour way to Bagan…and trust us when we say, you hear ever rattle and feel every shake.

So now that’ve we’ve set the stage a bit, let’s talk about the layout of the sleeper cars themselves….

Sleeper Car Layout

First understand that the first class sleeper car is a separate car from the rest of the train cars – meaning, once you’re in your car, you cannot get up and walk around to other cars.

We enjoy sitting and talking with locals and other travelers so this was a bit of a bummer for us. We digress, continuing on..

The sleeper car is shared amongst 4 people – 2 people to each side. Each side of the car is the same layout, two cushioned benches with a table in the middle and a raised bunk bed above.

The table folds against the train wall and the cushion seats fold out to make the second bed.

Each sleeper car comes equipped with a bathroom , and by bathroom, it is a rusty toilet with a hole in the ground where you could see the tracks run by as you squat to relieve yourself.

There is two windows to each side of the car – a total of 4 all together. The windows have a metal/tin pull down so you can block air from coming in. There are no screens on the windows so it’s either windows open or closed, no in between.

In addition, there is no A/C in the train but you do have a rotating fan on the ceiling. Luckily, we took this trip in February when the nights were cool so AC was not needed – we just opened the windows to get a cool breeze.

About The Sleeper Train Ride From Yangon To Bagan

Okay, now that you understand how the sleep cars are set up and laid out, let us talk about the ride.

For us, we 100% knew what we were getting ourselves into. We were prepared for what some bloggers referred to as “ an agonizing ” journey. But dammit, we wanted to experience it!

From what we’ve read, the train ride seemed to be far from pleasant but nothing short of an adventure. We decided that if our travel hero Anthony Bourdain took the sleeper train from Yangon to Bagan, hell, we are doing it too !

About the Ride

The train itself sits on the British rail lines that were originally laid in the late 1800’s and have yet to be updated. The train jerks and jumps the whole way 17 hour way to Bagan and there are times that you think, “this is it, we’re going off the tracks!”

There were several times that we were lifted out of our seats from the jerks but you just laughed and took another laaaarrrggge swig of Myanmar beer you bought from the local vendors that visited your train window during stops.

Sleeping, in all honesty, was the worst part . It’s nearly impossible to sleep when your body is being thrashed around all night, but you manage to get some shut eye in.

Our advice is whoever is the “lighter” sleeper sleep on the bottom bed and not the top. The top bunk you feel everything way more and get tossed around more than the folks sleeping on the bottom.

In all honestly, it wasn’t nearly as bad as we thought it would be. We made this ride to be so awful in our heads that when we were chugging along, we really ended up enjoying it.

Now, let us clarify “enjoyment.” By no means are we going to jump on this train route again anytime soon, but we are totally glad we took the train from Yangon to Bagan versus a bus.

You pass by villages and get a peek into the countryside and lesser seen areas of Myanmar . The sunset and sunrise are beautiful. You sit back and watch the world go by as you play a game of cards with your sleeper car roommates. It really is a ride you’ll never forget.

Yangon to Bagan Train or Bus?

So after reading this you may be asking yourself if taking the sleeper train from Yangon to Bagan is worth it? Our answer to this is “ it depends .” It 100% depends on the type of traveler you are and your threshold for new experiences and being a little uncomfortable.

For us, the sleeper train from Yangon to Bagan was 100% worth it. Yes, the ride is long. Yes, the ride is jerky . And yes, the ride can be tiresome but we wouldn’t have traded those 20 hours for anything.

If you have the time, we highly suggest you travel from Yangon to Bagan by train . It’ll be a trip … er… experience you wont soon forget!

If you’re thinking “meh”, I want something more comfortable and something shorter , then look into booking a bus from Yangon and make a bus ride your transportation method on how you get to Bagan.

Overnight Bus from Yangon to Bagan, Myanmar

yangon to bagan overnight bus myanmar cover

There are a few options to get from  Yangon to Bagan  in Myanmar , famous for its thousands of temples and beautiful sunrises and sunsets. There are busses that leave in the morning, more frequent overnight busses, and a daily overnight train.

The overnight train from Yangon to Bagan is probably the more ‘local’ experience, which takes 16 hours. Taking the overnight bus from Yangon to Bagan was a bit more plush and tourist-oriented. While there are multiple, frequent busses, the one night train sells out of sleeper seats quickly.

When I was in Yangon and went to book tickets for the overnight train, I was told the sleeper-class seats were sold out for the next three days! Plan B was taking the overnight bus from Yangon to Bagan .

Where to Book Overnight Train Tickets from Yangon to Bagan

Overnight train tickets from Yangon to Bagan office in Myanmar

Yangon’s train ticketing office is on Bogyoke Aung San Road , a couple blocks down from Bogyoke Aung San Market . There are several ticket windows but very few people, so I walked to the first one to ask where I can buy train tickets to Bagan.

Unfortunately they let me know that the sleeper seats were booked for the next three days. There were upper class seats available, but I opted out of that to avoid being crammed in an upright seat for a 16-hour ride.

Tip: If you want to take the train from Yangon to Bagan in a sleeper seat, be sure to book your tickets many days in advance.

Tickets for the Overnight Bus from Yangon to Bagan

There are countless travel agencies in Yangon that can assist with purchasing tickets for bussing from Yangon to Bagan. Some bus tickets can also be purchased online at 12GoAsia and printed.

Search for Yangon to Bagan bus tickets here:

I went to the travel agency Dana Moe across the street from the train station, to purchase my tickets for the night bus from Yangon to Bagan.

The company I was booked with,  JJ Express, is an expensive bus company, but it’s well vetted and is a favorite among tourists to ride with for long bus rides.

This specific night bus ride I took can be found on 12GoAsia as well.

travel from yangon to bagan

The night bus from Yangon to Bagan I was booked on departed from  Aung Mingalar Bus Station  at 8pm, with check-in starting at 7pm. The bus is supposed to take around  10 hours , with an arrival time in Bagan of 6am. It cost  $19 USD per person  for a first-class seat on the JJ Express bus.

Before leaving, I was warned that rush-hour traffic in Yangon starts around 6-7pm, so I should budget an hour and a half to get from downtown Yangon to the Aung Mingalar Bus Station.

Tip: When searching for tickets for the night bus from Yangon to Bagan, set your destination to “Bagan” or “ Nyuang-U”.  Nyuang-U is the town where the Bagan bus station is actually located.

Day of departure - bus from yangon to bagan.

A Grab from Yangon’s Chinatown area to the Aung Mingalar Bus Station took one hour and cost 10,500 kyats ($7) when Marty and I left at 5:30pm. The Grab pulled into the bus station and in front of the JJ Express office at 6:30pm. Upon showing JJ Express desk attendant our tickets, she gave us each a sticker with the bus number and our seat numbers written on it.

JJ Express bus station Yangon to Bagan overnight bus Myanmar

Aung Mingalar Bus Station is massive, with dozens of night busses lined up. Luckily, our taxi driver knew where the JJ Express bus company office was, and dropped us off right in front! There are several little shops and street food vendors where you can pickup a last minute meal or some snacks for the road.

At ten minutes before the 8:00pm departure time, JJ Express workers came through the waiting area telling those of us taking the 8:00 pm night bus from Yangon to Bagan to board. When we put our big bags under the bus, we received small number tags that identified us as the owners of our bags.

The inside of the bus was very comfortable. The seating arrangement is 2+1, so the seats are king-sized with lots of foot space. 6’4” Marty had plenty of space to stretch out his legs without impeding my space, which was a travel first!

Each of us had our own water bottle and blanket waiting for us on our seats. The seats are also complete with a foot rest and little TV monitor with three whole channels on it! The AC was a bit strong at times, so I was glad to have packed my warm socks and jacket on board with me.

When the bus pulled out of the station in Yangon, the bus attendant distributed a box of snacks to each passenger. She used a handheld speaker (karaoke machine?) to tell us about the safety rules of the bus.

KFC stop on overnight bus from Yangon to Bagan, Myanmar

The dinner rest stop was large, with many clean toilets with toilet paper provided . There was a shop to buy takeaway snacks, a KFC, and two local food places where I was able to buy some vegetable samosas for cheap (3 for 1000 kyat, or 65 cents). We had 30 minutes there before departing again.

Sometime around 2am the bus stopped again for a restroom break.

Arriving at Nyuang-U Bus Station (Bagan)

At 5:15am I was woken up by the bus attendant’s speaker/karaoke machine, saying we are about to arrive at Nyuang-U bus station . Nyuang-U is the town where most of the restaurants and  hotels  for tourists are located, near to Old Bagan and New Bagan.

The bus station is a couple kilometers away from Bagan town, meaning everyone has to take a taxi from the station to their accommodation.

Bagan bus station, Yangon to Bagan overnight bus in Myanmar

Taxi from Nyuang-U Bus Station to Nyuang-U Town, Old Bagan, or New Bagan

Luckily there is NEVER a shortage of taxi drivers in Southeast Asia . Drivers started yelling “Taxi! Taxi!” before the bus even came to a complete stop at the station.

There was a board with the set prices for driving to each town: Nyuang-U, Old Bagan, and New Bagan, with taxis to Nyuang-U starting at 6,000 kyats ($4) . This price isn’t for a whole taxi though… We shared a taxi from the station with two others who were going to Old Bagan, who paid 10,000 kyats ($6.50) together.

The main road leading from Nyuang-U bus station to the other towns has a checkpoint , where all foreigners have to pay to enter the Bagan Archeological Zone. The fee is 25,000 kyats ($16) per person, and the ticket is valid for five days from the date of purchase. At 5:45 am the taxi pulled into our Bagan hotel at the same time that current hotel guests were getting ready on their electric scooters to leave to see the sunrise.

Although the room that we booked was still occupied, the owner let us know that most people leave around 8am to bus or train to their next Myanmar destination , so we’d be able to check in by 9. If our room had been unoccupied, we would have been able to go right to sleep at 6am!

Tip : Book a hotel that will let you check in early (5-6am) if the room is open! Bonus points for if they let you eat breakfast when you arrive too. Our hotel in Bagan, Sunrise Bagan Hotel , did both of these for us.

Yangon to Bagan

Yangon to Bagan

Best options, other options, yangon to bagan schedule, how to get from yangon to bagan.

One of the undeniable highlights to any trip to Burma, Bagan lies 620 km north of Yangon. No wonder that the route between Yangon and Bagan is well travelled. You can either fly or opt for an overland trip depending on your budget and overall preferences. Buses, trains and planes allow you to take your time, save a couple of bucks in your pocket and put up with a long journey and bumpy road or travel fast and part with some USD100+ and get closer to the mysterious temples of Bagan is just one hour. Whichever way you choose, it is always an adventure in Burma.

Buses to Mandalay take 5 hours and cost MMK10,000/USD9. Train to Mandalay takes 7½ hours and departs daily at 7am. A much more scenic way to get to Mandalay from Bagan is to take a ferry going upstream along Irrawaddy River. Ferryboats take longer – from nine hours up – but let you avoid a bumpy bus ride. Note that there are different types of boats – from very slow ones (USD10) to more luxurious and speedy options (USD50). Opinions vary: some travellers rave about this boat journey between Bagan and Mandalay, others consider it too expensive, not so spectacular and boring.

Monywa , half way between Bagan and Mandalay, can also be reached by direct bus or via Pakokku.

There are buses to Kalaw and Taunggyi (for Inle Lake) from Bagan, too (from MMK12,000/USD10). The ride is extremely bumpy and winds its way through mountainous area in certain parts. If your bus has a lot of locals on board, do not be surprised to find half of your fellow passengers vomiting constantly. At the stop you will then find them dining with great appetite, though. ...And vomiting again afterwards! If you can afford flying, taking a plane is your best bet for travelling between Bagan and Inle Lake.

There are no direct buses for Sittwe or Mrauk U : you have to change at Magwe.

The British School Yangon: A Global Education

The British School Yangon (BSY) is a leading international school in Myanmar that offers an exceptional education to students from all across the world. We had the pleasure of speaking with Alison Fox, the Principal of BSY, to learn more about the school’s values, approach to education, and commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive learning environment.

Q: What, in your opinion, makes a great teacher, and how does the British School Yangon prioritise these qualities in its faculty?

A: There’s no doubt in my mind that a great teacher holds two essential ingredients: an absolute passion for their subject and a genuine and unwavering commitment to working with children and making a difference. Our interview process plays a crucial role in ensuring the selection of such passionate teachers, those committed to making a positive difference in the lives of children.

Q: Can you share your perspective on the value of an international school education, particularly in preparing students for a globalised world?

A: Being exposed to different cultures, beliefs, and contexts provides invaluable cultural enrichment. This, along with a diverse, inclusive and holistic approach to teaching and learning, opens students’ hearts and minds to the wider world. In an international school, we are all part of a community with diverse perspectives, languages, and traditions from around the world. This fosters a deep appreciation for different cultures and promotes tolerance, respect and cross-cultural understanding, all essential skills in today’s interconnected world.

Q: Recognising the diverse student body at BSY, how does the school facilitate the integration and academic success of students with very little or no English proficiency?

A: Integration is the key word here, and, as a truly inclusive school, we have always welcomed students with differing levels of English proficiency. We commit to a personalised learning experience for all our students, and our teachers are experienced and skilled in adapting their teaching to each and every child. With such personalised provision, dedicated class and form tutors, as well as high-quality English language acquisition platforms and resources, we find that those students progress incredibly with their English in a surprisingly short space of time.

Q: How do you believe school facilities contribute to the overall learning experience?

A: I believe that exceptional learning environments go hand in hand with exceptional teachers to make for outstanding learning experiences. Here at BSY we are blessed with being able to learn in an incredible purpose-built school with state-of-the-art facilities. With a campus like ours, designed to inspire learning, our students have access to the best resources to enable them to be the best they can be.

Alison Fox’s insights on the BSY’s values, approach to education, and commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive learning environment demonstrate the school’s dedication to providing an exceptional education to its students. With a focus on fostering an international mindset, promoting cross-cultural understanding, and providing personalised learning experiences, BSY ensures that its students are equipped with the adaptability and resilience needed to succeed in an ever-changing global landscape.
