Visit Carlsberg: A Tour of Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen

guided tour carlsberg brewery

There are three certainties in life: death, taxes, and Julianne visiting a brewery in whatever country she’s in. Since touring both the Heineken Experience and the Guinness Storehouse last year, I’ve become, shall I say, *really* into beer tours. So it should come as no surprise that Visit Carlsberg was one of the first stops we made on our trip to Copenhagen in February 2018.

Without further ado, here’s the 411 on how you can take part in this fantastic Danish ex-beer-erience.

But Before We Get Started…

I want to be honest and upfront here: as I was writing this post, I discovered that Visit Carlsberg is set to close temporarily on December 22, 2018 for rebuilding, and they’ll be closed through 2019 as they continue with renovations and modernization. They’re currently set to reopen in 2020.

So why am I writing this post? Because you still might learn a thing or two about Carlsberg beer, no matter where in the world you’re sipping on it. Our mission here is to educate just as much as to entertain, so we hope you’ll stick around and grab a pint.

What it *really* means, though, is you’d better haul your beer-lovin’ self over to Visit Carlsberg and sip on their delicious brews while you still can. If you’re a procrastinator who leaves things until the last minute, this post is tailor-made for you!

Visit Carlsberg is a great addition to any first time itinerary in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Your exbeerience at Visit Carlsberg awaits.

Where is Visit Carlsberg?

Visit Carlsberg is located in Denmark’s charming capital city of Copenhagen. More specifically, you can find it at Gamle Carlsberg Vej 11, 1799 Copenhagen V.

Hint: Zoom in or out to see where Visit Carlsberg is relative to other Copenhagen landmarks.

How To Get to Visit Carlsberg: Or, Trains, Bicycles, and Shuttles, Oh My!

There are a number of ways to get to Visit Carlsberg, and the one you choose will likely depend on a multitude of factors: Is it cold enough outside that your tongue will freeze to a flagpole? Are you uncoordinated and fall over when riding bicycles? Do you really just want a beer in your hand ASAP and need to take the fastest route, dammit?!

(You get the picture. And yes, all of these were factors in our transportation choice.)

We elected to walk 10 minutes to Copenhagen Central station from our hostel , and take the B and/or C trains to the Carlsberg St stop. From there, it was a quick 5-minute walk uphill to Visit Carlsberg.

Alternate Routes

Here are some alternate modes of transportation, should you prefer something different or have an excellent sense of balance:

  • By Bicycle: Copenhagen is known for being a bicycle-friendly city, so if you’re up for it, you can bike over. It takes 10 minutes via bicycle from Copenhagen Central station.
  • On Foot: It’s a 4-kilometer walk (2.48 miles) from Copenhagen Central station to Visit Carlsberg.
  • Free Shuttle: There’s a free bus (yay!) to and from Visit Carlsberg. Pick it up at Vesterbrogade 6, right by Copenhagen Central station, at 12:00 PM, 1:00 PM, and 2:00 PM. It departs from Visit Carlsberg at 12:25 PM, 1:25 PM, and 2: 25 PM.

Visit Carlsberg Review: A True Copenhagen Exbeerience

First: to tour or not to tour.

When my friend Brianne of “A Traveling Life” and I arrived at Visit Carlsberg, we immediately zipped into the Ticket Center (which is also the original brewery of J.C. Jacobsen).

Visit Carlsberg is one of the best places for beer in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Step inside to get your admission tickets!

We discovered that we had *just* missed the 1:00 PM guided historical tour by 4 minutes and 37 seconds. (Yes, I checked.) We were initially disappointed, but rather than wait around for an hour, we decided to do a self-guided tour.

In the end, this was a great choice for us; we moved at our own pace and spent more time in the areas we found interesting. We overheard positive remarks from tour takers when we were tasting beer later on, though, so it’s too bad we missed it!

20,000+ Bottles of Beer on the Wall…

I like my brewery tours to start with a bang, and on this front, Visit Carlsberg certainly delivered.

We walked in, and…. Oh. My. God. Beer nerds, behold the wonder and the glory of the l argest unopened beer bottle collection in the world !

Visit Carlsberg in Copenhagen, Denmark is home to the largest unopened beer bottle collection in the world.

Have you ever seen this many beer bottles in one place?!?

It’s completely mind-boggling, and reminded me of my time at the Scotch Whisky Experience (which has the world’s largest collection of Scotch whisky).

So how did this boozy collection come about? Well, a Danish engineer named Mr. Leif Sonne had the brilliant idea to collect unopened beer bottles in 1968. In 1993, he transferred the collection to Carlsberg; by 2007, the collection stood at over 22,000 bottles and was certified by Guinness World Records to be the largest collection of bottled beer on Planet Earth.

In sum: this gallery is worth the price of admission alone!

The History of Carlsberg

After we (sort of) got over the shock of thousands of beer bottles, we moved on to the next part of our journey: learning about the history of Carlsberg and its beer.

You’ll learn some fun facts here about Carlsberg, like:

  • Carlsberg was founded in 1847 by J.C. Jacobsen.  The first brew was finished on November 10, 1847.
  • The name “Carlsberg” comes from two words.  J.C. used his son’s name, Carl, and the Danish word for “hill.”
  • For a while, there were two competing Carlsberg breweries.  Jacobsen’s son Carl opened a brewery in 1882 named Ny (New) Carlsberg, so Dad had to rename his brewery Gamle (Old) Carlsberg. The companies merged in 1906.
  • Carlsberg employees got a sizable beer allowance back in the day. Yep — men were given an allowance of 8 pints… PER DAY. Crikey!
  • Carlsberg was the first brewery in the world to purify yeast.  They also made another integral contribution to science: the concept of pH was first introduced by a Danish chemist at Carlsberg Laboratory in 1909. Carlsberg Laboratory was created by — you guessed it — Mr. J.C. Jacobsen in 1875.

Meanwhile, Outdoors: Sculpture Garden & Carlsberg Stables

Tired of being indoors? Swing through the Sculpture Garden, which houses a small part of Jacobsen’s art collection. If you’re visiting in February like we did, your “leisurely walk” through here will probably turn into more of a frenzied run so your fingers don’t freeze off.

You can also check out Carlsberg’s stables, where you can see a four-legged piece of Carlsberg’s history. The large draught horses played a major role in Carlsberg’s beer deliveries.

Brand Store & First Beer Tasting

We deftly navigated through all of the Carlsberg merchandise with one thought on our minds: trying our first sample of Carlsberg beer, which was included in the admission price.

I’m here for the beer, so it wasn’t too hard to skip past the merch.

Step right up for your Carlsberg beer!

There’s something I like to call Julianne’s third law of beer: “Beer always tastes better straight from the source.” Guinness tastes better to me in Ireland; Heineken tastes better to me in the Netherlands; Sam Adams seems to taste better to me in Boston.

It’s five o’clock in Copenhagen! Brianne (right) and I sip on some Carlsberg beers.

The same held true for Carlsberg: boy, oh boy, did it taste awesome in Copenhagen. We settled on the Carlsberg pilsner for our sample, and it perked up our taste buds with its crispness and malty character.

Visit Carlsberg in Copenhagen, Denmark is an ideal fun activity for beer lovers.

After our “freebie” beer, we realized that our stomachs were grumbling audibly, so we hauled ourselves over to Jacobsen Brewhouse and Bar.

C’mon, you’re here for the beer, right? So zip on over to the bar for some beer flights.

Beer flights cost 80 kr ($12.15 USD) for four 0.15 L draught beer samples. From left to right in the photo above, we drank:

  • Grimbergen Blanche – 6% ABV; a fruity wheat beer
  • Jacobsen Yakima IPA – 6.5% ABV; a full-bodied West Coast-style IPA
  • 1883 – 4.6% ABV; a malty amber lager
  • Jacobsen Brown Ale – 6% ABV; a malty, intense brown ale

We also had a glass of the Brewmaster IPA to wash down the rye bread with hop-smoked salmon that we had for lunch. All in all, it was delicious. Skål!

** Temporarily closed for renovations ***

With whiffs of the old Carlsberg brewery pervading the air, tours of this beer mecca cover the history of brewing and beer consumption in Denmark.

Exhibits range from the first known Danish beer to a comprehensive overview of the history of the company, with models of old workers’ quarters and antique brewing machinery.

At the end of the tour, treat yourself to a few rounds at the bar (two beers are included in the ticket). One compelling display features Egtved Girl, the preserved body of a child from prehistoric times found in a Danish bog. A small pot at her feet contained traces of beer.

Founded in Copenhagen in 1947 by J C Jacobsen, and named after his son, Carlsberg has become pretty much a trademark of Denmark, so a visit here is a history lesson in cultural iconography.

Getting there & doing it

The museum is an enjoyable cycle ride from the centre, west from Vaernedamsvej along Vesterbrogade then a left turn along Pile Alle. You can also walk (20 minutes) or take a taxi (5 minutes) from downtown Vesterbro.

Head to the visitor centre, and pick up a self-guided tour, which takes about 1.5 hours. Private guided tours may also be requested (additional charge).

When to do it

It’s open all year round, Tuesday-Sunday. Closed Mondays.

A Tour Of The Carlsberg Brewery

carlsberg brewery copenhagen

The Carlsberg Brewery was founded in the mid-1800s and is located just outside of the city center of Copenhagen. Now a beer known worldwide, the small beginnings of the beer and brewery are really quite interesting. Before venturing to the brewery I wouldn’t have been able to tell you much about the beer, except that I’ve had it and liked it ( groundbreaking I know) .

When Ben and I started planning our trip to Copenhagen the small brewery was listed as a must to see so we thought why not. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Carlsberg Brewery if I’m being honest. We are the type to love to partake in tours when we travel, it’s the best way to learn more history about a city from the locals. However, the last brewery tour we did was the Heineken tour in Amsterdam and found that to be wildly overrated and incredibly commercial. Hesitant, to do another we decided to go for it and am I ever glad we did – this was one of the best city experiences I’ve had. It was arguably our favourite part of our Copenhagen trip ( excluding the food of course ).

carlsberg brewery

Getting there:

The Carlsberg Brewery is located in the Vestboro district of Copenhagen. You can get there by bus, the 8A or 26 buses take you the closest so you don’t have to walk too far. Being an avid walker, Ben and I had actually walked there from our hotel, the Absalon , which didn’t take too long at all.

One of the tour guides we had explained that a couple of years ago the brewery actually sold off a bit of the land and buildings they no longer used for brewing to developers. In the next 5-10 years the whole area will be turned into a retail and residential area. From the promotional photos I was seeing the area is going to look really cool and worth touring around once it’s done as well!

The Experience

The only time of day we could really fit the brewery in was probably a bit earlier than I would have liked but it worked out. We got tickets for the general museum, the beer tasting and a guided tour. We arrived just after 11 so we were on the first beer tasting of the day at noon and then a guided tour just after at 1pm.

carlsberg brewery copenhagen

The general museum was quite a interesting. It’s small and shouldn’t take you more than half an hour to walk through it on your own. The first place you get to visit is the beer collection on the floor just above the ticket booths. This was one of the coolest things I’ve seen. It’s one of the biggest beer collection in the world!

There are about 5 rows stacked with beer bottles, all full of course. At first I thought the collection was limited to beer just from Denmark or at least the Scandinavian countries. Looking closer though I realized the beers were from all over the world including Asia! It was really quite amazing to just walk around the outside of the case and try to see the different beers that were in there. I couldn’t spot a Canadian beer though!

After leaving the beer collection you were brought through the rest of the building where you learned more about the history of Carlsberg and how the beer is made. This could be the history nerd in me talking but I found it really interesting learning about the workers at Carlsberg back in the day. Apparently the single men were housed and fed by the brewery in exchange for working. Even married men would hide the fact that they were betrothed so they could get free room and board! Obviously after a while the Carlsberg caught on and families were eventually welcomed as well.

I also learned that the men were given an allowance of 8 pints a day.  8 PINTS A DAY . Could you imagine drinking that much at work (or hopefully after) every day? You’d never have to worry about a hangover I guess!

The Beer Tasting

One of my favourite things to do is a wine or beer tasting. It’s always learning the thought process and workings of what goes into creating some of these drinks. Our tasting guide for the day was Yannik. He was very knowledgeable, and funny.

The tour really began in the tunnels underneath the brewery where Yannik explained that in World War Two the tunnels were actually used to help the military. With over 10km worth of tunnels, there was plenty of room for people to hide or have important meetings in private. The room just before the beer tasting room was actually a real military room with extra concrete incase there had been a bomb. In the middle was a large table like you would have seen in the movies where they recorded the whereabouts of the enemy.

The beer tasting consisted of three beers; Jacobsebn Weissbier, Jacobsen Extra Pilsner and the Jacobsen Dark Lager. I can be really picky with my beer but I actually loved all three of these. The Weissbier was my favourite being a wheat beer, unfiltered and tasting almost fruity. The Extra Pilsner is an organic beer that requires a special kind of hops to be made. In fact the hops is so special to this beer they stopped making it for 3 or 4 months because they couldn’t find it. Last was the Dark Lager which is actually the original Carlsberg recipe. They stick to it so strictly that they even replicate the water to what it would have been back in 1850 in order to make it.

Yannik also explained that Carlsberg was the first brewery in the world to purify yeast. They shared this secret for free to other breweries – most notably Heineken! The PH scale was also invented by Carlsberg. The lesson? Beer would definitely not be the same without this small Danish brewery.

The Guided Tour

If you plan on doing the guided tour and the beer tasting on your visit to Carlsberg (I strongly suggest you do) I would recommend doing the tour first. After a few beers first thing in the morning, it can be a bit .. hard to pay attention! However I tried my best and did learn some interesting facts about the brewery.

Our tour started in the main square, the same spot as the beer tasting. This time however we walked around the outside of the buildings to admire the original buildings (or at least where they would have been) and the family home. We also learned about the tumultuous relationship between Jacob Christian Jacobsen and his son, Carl Jacobsen. The two never saw eye to eye on how the brewery should have been run and the relationship between the two was very stilted.

Carl grew up on the grounds of the brewery in their home nearby but once the home came into his possession after his fathers death he refused to live there. His childhood wasn’t the best apparently. He decided to donate the home to the best scientists of Denmark and so whoever had the privilege of living there would do so rent free for as long as they wished! What?

carlsberg brewery copenhagen

Even though the brewery is now owned by the Carlsberg foundation, it still very much feels like a family business. Everything from the grounds, to the tours or the taste of the Jacobsen beer gives off the impression it’s made and produced by a family.

Feeling a little buzzed from all the delicious beer we were off to explore the rest of what Copenhagen had to offer!

Visiting Carlsberg Brewery: Denmark’s Beer Giant

guided tour carlsberg brewery

Visiting Carlsberg Brewery was high on my list of things to do while spending 72 hours in Copenhagen. If you haven’t noticed by now, I love a good brewery tour , even more so when admission is included in the local tourism pass as it is with the Copenhagen Card.

From its widespread history and massive footprint to its mindblowing beer bottle collection, visiting Carlsberg Brewery is a unique one to say the least.

Visiting Carlsberg Brewery – How to get there

Visiting Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen

Visiting the Carlsberg Brewery from Copenhagen is easy, especially if you have a Copenhagen Card. Not only is admission to the brewery included but transportation on the well-connected transit system is as well. The Carlsberg Brewery is located in the newly developed Carlsberg neighbourhood and can be reached on the A or B metro line from Nørreport station. Once you get off at Carlsberg station it is a short 7-minute walk to the brewery gates.

22,000 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

Turns out, Carlsberg has a thing for beer bottles. Since 1968 Leif Sonne, a Danish engineer with unthinkable willpower, started collecting unopened beer bottles from around the globe. In the 1990’s his massive collection caught the attention of Carlsberg who offered to store his bottles at their brewery. In 2007 it was officially titled with the worlds largest collection of unopened beer bottles by Guinness World Records. This was a cool surprise to me and the first thing you see on the self-guided tour while visiting the Carlsberg Brewery.

The History of Carlsberg

Visiting Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen

Past the hoarding of beer bottles, the self-guided Carlsberg tour continues through not only the history of its  beer but the history of beer itself.

Dating back 3000+ years, the massive circular display walks you through the creation and celebration of beer in the most informative way possible. Literally placards for days.

Visiting Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen

Carlsberg’s story picks up in 1845 when a young J.C. Jacobsen began studying (drinking) Bavarian brewing in Munich. He returned home to Copenhagen armed with yeast and a head full of ideas. After perfecting his first batch in his mother’s tub, Jacobsen built a brand new brewery to share his creation with the world.

Pulled from his son’s name (Carl) and the Danish word for “hill,” Carlsberg is born. Years of pitfalls are followed by success and in 1868 Carlsberg begins exporting to the world with awards and accomplishments following suit.

Today Carlsberg is one of the biggest beer brands out there, an impressive feat coming from such a small Scandinavian country.

Fine Beer Calls for Fine Art

Back outside in the expensive brewery grounds, the tour continues through Jacobson’s personal art collection. Turns out he was a lover of the arts and is even the man behind Copenhagen‘s famous Little Mermaid statue, something he gifted to the city. A replica of such is on display in the gardens just outside the Carlsberg stables.

Carlsberg Stables

Aside from the factory, a highlight of visiting Carlsberg brewery is strolling the stables. To keep with tradition, on-site you will find Jutland horses and all their beer hauling glory. Carriage rides and tours are included with admission but only at allotted times. You can refer to the activity board in the ticket office or your handy itinerary. I missed out by the time I strolled through but was able to check out the stables and meet the horses up close.

Thirsty Yet?

Visiting Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen

The true highlight of visiting Carlsberg Brewery is, of course, tasting the brew. There is something about sampling a famous beer straight from the source that makes it so much better. Visiting Carlsberg is no exception. It could’ve been the unseasonably warm Copenhagen weather or the beer history I was steeping in for the past hour, but this Pilsner rivals even the original I sampled at the source in Pilsen .

Beyond Visiting Carlsberg Brewery

Visiting Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen

Equal parts tasting and local construction led me to an end extended tour through the Carlsberg campus. I was trying to get to the nearby catacombs and got turned around. As I stumbled around the grounds I got a sense of just how big Carlsberg is in the beer world. The brewery grounds extend far beyond what you see at the brewery tour. Spread out over several blocks, the Carlsberg neighbourhood includes the Scandinavia School of Brewing , shops, and it’s in by the looks of the construction, very cool condos in the near future.

Visiting Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen

Although I would live next to a lot of breweries, Carlsberg is appealing with its close proximity to Søndermarken   Park. Copenhagen being listed as one of the best cities in the world to live in doesn’t hurt either.

Skål!

Visiting Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen

Later that day while watching the sunset from a patio in Nyhavn I was able to appreciate my beer that much more. Looking down the busy street I spied countless people doing the exact same thing. This made me wonder, without J.C. Jacobsen’s grand vision and clean tasting Pilsner, would these people even be here? Where would Copenhagen be?

After visiting Carlsberg Brewery it is undoubtedly clear that Carlsberg has been huge for Copenhagen and the country of Denmark. Looking around now was living proof. Cheers to that Carlsberg.

Visit Carlsberg

Vesterbro & Frederiksberg

Set to reopen in 2020 after a major refurbishment, Visit Carlsberg explores the history of Danish beer from 1370 BC (yes, they carbon-dated a bog girl who was found in a peat bog caressing a jug of well-aged brew). The centre is adjacent to the architecturally whimsical Carlsberg brewery and its exhibits offer insight into Carlsberg's history, the brewing process, as well as access to the brewery's stables and famous Jutland dray horses.

The self-guided tour ends at the bar, where you can knock back two beers (or soft drinks), included in the admission price. Guided tours are also available.

From April to September, a free shuttle bus service runs between the Visit Carlsberg and the Royal Hotel at Vesterbrogade 6 (right beside Central Station). Buses run hourly from 11am to 5pm; Visit Carlsberg tickets can be purchased on board.

See the website for updates on Visit Carlsberg's refurbishment and scheduled reopening.

guided tour carlsberg brewery

The history of Carlsberg beer, founded in 1847, is interwoven with the history of Denmark. A can of Carlsberg pilsner is the symbol of the every day – simple and traditional, and available everywhere from 7-11 to restaurants.

If you’re travelling to Copenhagen for the first time, or just really like beer, Visit Carlsberg is a great way to learn about both the brewery and the Danish beer culture. Located in Vesterbro, the old Carlsberg city ( Carlsberg Byen ), houses the old Carlsberg Brewery, the world’s largest bottle collection (do NOT play frisbee in there!) and offers tours and tastings.

But if you’d like to go a little deeper into the nearly 200 year old factory and brewery, there are hidden rooms that aren’t part of the usual tour. We were lucky enough to get a peek into those rooms and brought our camera along too.

Take a look behind the scenes at the old Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen:

Visiting the Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen

The Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen is one of the most interesting in Europe. If you do it right, you could be there for hours.

The tour through the brewery is self-guided unless you pay for a guide. The map takes you through a mini historical museum and production, a sculpture garden, the stables where they keep the keg-carrying horses of the brewery, and the bar. There you can use not one, but two vouchers for a beer. This is nice because most breweries include only one drink with the price of admission. And the price of admission is just a wee cheaper than buying two beers anywhere in the city.

Unbeknownst to us, the guided tour, which we intended to take, was not part of the cost of admission. It was an additional fee, around $7.50. No one told us this until we waited for the tour to start and the guide asked for our tickets. By the time we realized, it was too late for us to book another one because it would conflict with the other two activities we wanted to do: the free carriage ride and the beer tasting (which also costs an additional $7.50). But you can take yourself through the exhibition and check out the world’s largest bottle collection .

After missing our guided tour, we went and played with the horses in the stable. They’re chunky Scandinavian horses, which is a sight to see if you’ve never seen a horse that looks prehistorically large. So we waited at the designated horse meeting point according to the map they had given us and according to the sign posted in the area. We had just made it in time for the last ride of the day.

But when the start time came and went and no horse carriage came to retrieve us, we realized something wasn’t right. So we went and asked. Apparently, the horse meeting point had been moved this week. No one bothered to tell us and we didn’t think to ask, so we missed it. So we wasted 30 minutes waiting around for this ride and missed it anyway.

But the great thing about being really angry at a brewery is that you can be drunk and happy in 10 minutes. We went and got our second free beer and then we did a beer tasting. The tasting was led by a charming guide named Kasper, who told us all about the history of different beers. We tried three bottled beers from their production line: a porter, a pilsner, and a blonde ale. He knew what we were about, so he gave us the half-full bottles of beer leftover from the other tables doing the tasting. He even gave us tips on where to go drink in Stockholm, where we were headed.

In the end, we had a fantastic time, because we managed to get wasted and forget that we missed almost everything we wanted to do. But if you want have a more successful experience at the brewery, here are some tips:

  • Many of the activities conflict with each other (like the tour, the tasting, and the carriage ride), so you either have to spend several hours there or choose between them.
  • If you’re interested in the carriage ride, know that they end early and they’re first come first serve. The last one is usually at 2 pm, and on the day we went, at 1:30 pm. Ask to make sure that the time and the meeting point have not changed.
  • Do the beer tasting before you go to the bar so you can get a better idea of what you want to drink from their extensive selections on tap.
  • Not everyone loves tours full of history and fun facts about beer brewing, so drink before it starts so that everyone has a good time.
  • They offer a free shuttle back to Tivoli, because the brewery is in the middle of nowhere. The shuttle runs on a limited schedule and the last one is also fairly early, before 3 pm.
  • This is the cheapest place to get drunk in Copenhagen. So to quote the cab driver who dropped us off there, cheers!

How to spend a day in Carlsberg City District, the industrial-chic area of Copenhagen with a brewing past

C avernous redbrick storehouses and the green copper roof of Elephant Tower are among the heritage landmarks of Carlsberg’s original brewery, which now forms the foundation for what’s become one of Copenhagen ’s most exciting neighbourhoods. New architectural development has risen around the converted brewery buildings on the edge of Vesterbro .

Cobbled streets once navigated by horse-drawn carts laden with barrels are now replaced with cyclists and pedestrians meandering between the district’s growing collection of trendy cafes, restaurants, bars and boutiques.

For visitors to the emerging neighbourhood, insight into Carlsberg’s brewing history and exploration of the architecturally rich area – which came even more into focus in 2023 as Copenhagen was crowned Unesco World Capital of Architecture – is paired with discovery of the district’s creative spaces and the exciting food and drink scene.

Discover the brewery’s past

The Carlsberg brewery visitor centre entered a new era in summer 2023 as it reopened following a complete reimagination. Elsewhere, you can explore heritage sites, such as the Elephant Tower and lighthouse, using the on-site maps.

Beer-infused spa therapies

Taking over a section of the brewery’s storehouse, Aire Ancient Baths now provides a subterranean sanctuary home to spa facilities inspired by ancient bathhouses. Drawing on its location, the spa has a signature beer experience with beer tasting.

Urban squares and gardens

A number of squares and gardens are scattered throughout Carlsberg City District. Among them is the tree-filled oasis, JC Jacobsen Garden, once the private garden of Carlsberg’s founder, which has now been revived by the Carlsberg Foundation.

Heritage meets contemporary art

Late 2021 saw the district’s landmark Carlsberg Lighthouse, a distinct part of the original brewery, open to the public as the Copenhagen offshoot of Swiss art gallery Von Bartha made its debut. Contemporary exhibitions now occupy the intriguing space.

Philipp Inreiter, the chef behind Copenhagen’s celebrated ramen shop, Slurp, opened this Japanese izakaya in the Carlsberg City District at the end of 2020. You’ll find a Slurp Ramen Residency at the U-shaped counter downstairs.

Aamanns Genbo

The Michelin-rated restaurant known for its reinvention of the traditional smørrebrød open sandwich, Aamanns , recently made its Carlsberg City District debut on Kildepladsen. A set menu is served in the evening and the drinks list features Aamanns’ own IPA and schnapps.

Relocated in 2022 from its previous harbourside location, this restaurant comes from the recipient of the 2021 Michelin Young Chef Award, Christoffer Sørensen. Sustainably sourced ingredients are used in tasting menus representing his interpretation of modern Nordic gastronomy.

Kaffekilden

One of three coffee bars from the local Kaffekilden brand (translating to ‘the coffee source’), this cosy art-filled cafe serves top-quality coffee made from a blend of Ethiopian, Guatemalan and Brazilian beans, along with cakes they’re equally as acclaimed for.

Carls Øl- og Spisehus

Carlsberg’s own Nordic brasserie and beer bar offers around 100 different beers, including the speciality brews of other brands like Jacobsen and Tuborg, from a 70-metre-long bar in the brewery’s former malt silo.

The man behind the neighbourhood’s popular pizza place Surt , Giuseppe Oliva, has now opened this brand-new natural wine bar – launched at the end of January 2023 – right by the JC Jacobsen Garden. The wine list focuses on Italy’s 20 regions.

Fashion and design

Among several shops catering to design afficionados across the district are the concept stores of Danish homeware brands, Stillark, Encoded and Carl Hansen & Søn. For Danish fashion, check out the boutiques of Henrik Vibskov and Haastrup.

Music and art

Browse everything music-based at the flagship store of Borg Sound and window-shop the pianos on display at the Copenhagen home of Pianoteket. Art supplies are sold at the district’s outlet of 150-year-old Copenhagen art specialist, Stelling.

Fresh produce and flowers

Call into the Tapperitorvet square store of family-run florist Gamst Blomster, which has been going since 1903, for fresh flowers and pick up produce that’s been sourced from local farms at Økoskabet (translating to the eco-cabinet).

Hotel Ottilia

Named after Ottilia Marie Jacobsen, the wife of brewer Carl Jacobsen (Carlsberg founder JC Jacobsen’s son), this unique hotel has transformed a section of the old brewery. The interiors pair original architecture with modern Scandi style, and highlights include a panoramic rooftop restaurant and bar.

CityHub Copenhagen

This affordable urban hotel is just a 15-minute walk from the Carlsberg City District in Vesterbro. Capsule-style accommodation is offered in a trendy, tech-filled space encompassing shared facilities such as a sauna, cosy hangout area and self-service bar.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Proud mom Madonna says her kids have put ‘blood, sweat and tears’ into Celebration Tour performances

Madonna with kids David, Mercy, Estere and Stella

Madonna is proud of her children for working hard as performers in her ongoing Celebration Tour.

“I think what my children learned the most in this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you want to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them,” the pop superstar, 65, said in an interview with W magazine published Wednesday.

“And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears.”

As Madonna prepared to hit the road for the concert series — a spectacle that honors her four decades in the spotlight — she tapped her four youngest kids, David, 18, Mercy, also 18, plus 11-year-old twins Stella and Estere, to showcase their unique talents on stage.

Madonna

“Because the Celebration Tour is a retrospective of my life, I thought it made perfect sense to include all of my children still living with me in the show; they all dance and play musical instruments, and have been doing so for years,” the “Ray of Light” singer told the publication.

“David has played guitar since he was a child. Mercy has played piano since she was 8 and she’s been classically trained most of her life. Eventually, when I adopted the twins, they started to play piano and dance as well.”

Madonna noted that there is “always an endless parade of dancing and [performing arts] teachers coming and going in our house,” so it only made sense to give her children a bigger platform to shine on the Celebration Tour.

A show highlight for the Grammy winner is when daughter Mercy accompanies her on piano during a powerful rendition of her 1993 ballad “Bad Girl.”

“I saw a strange, poetic juxtaposition of hedonism and exploration emerging into the light of Mercy, sitting stoically at her grand piano playing Chopin as she beckoned me towards her, making me think about the choices I have made in my life,” Madonna said, explaining how that specific moment came to be.

“Singing ‘Bad Girl’ was kind of my confession to her, and I felt we had an unspoken understanding of what was happening.”

Meanwhile, David duets with his mom on “Mother and Father” from her 2003 album, “American Life.”

“‘Mother and Father’ is one of my favorite moments in the show because it gave me a chance to not only honor my mother and her memory but also to honor David’s mother and her memory,” she said of the young creative, whom she adopted from Malawi in 2006.

Madonna and son David

“He has always wanted to sing and play guitar. He loves being on stage — this is nothing new. Much of the show is about motherhood, family, and the importance of that in my artistic life.”

As for Stella and Estere, the girls dance their hearts out when Madonna sings her 2000 smash “Don’t Tell Me,” and also during a section in the show that pays homage to ballroom and the art of vogueing.

“While Estere was learning how to DJ, she became interested in ballroom competitions. Just by luck, one of my choreographer’s assistants, Ivy Mugler, has her own ballroom house called House of Mugler,” she says of how the two became interested in that sect of dance.

Madonna and others onstage

“She started taking Estere aside during rehearsals to another room—and within a couple of weeks she was doing death drops and spins and surprising us with her ability. So, of course we had to turn that section of the show into Estere’s Ball.”

Madonna is also mom to Lourdes “Lola” Leon, 27 — whom she shares with ex Carlos Leon — and Rocco Ritchie, 23 — whom she shares with ex-husband Guy Ritchie. Her eldest have also participated in her tours, including 2012’s MDNA Tour, for which Lourdes worked in the wardrobe department while Rocco performed on stage.

“I have always been blessed with children who are interested in music, dance and art. Starting from the top with Lola, who was not only an incredible ballet dancer and a rhythmic gymnast, she also switches to musical theater and contemporary dance,” she said.

Madonna with her kids

The eternal hitmaker acknowledged that “nothing brings [her] more happiness” than collaborating with her kids.

“It would be boring if they were just traveling from hotel to hotel, and occasionally coming to watch the show,” she elaborated. “Of course, I am their mother so sometimes we get on each other’s nerves. We are a family of artists but we are also a family, and that’s what happens.”

The Celebration Tour’s next stop is Friday in Mexico City, followed by a final — and free — show in Rio de Janeiro on May 4.
