Doha allows Qatari and GCC citizens to travel to and fro using IDs

GCC nationals, residents, EU nationals, residents exempt from online registration

Dubai: The Qatari Ministry of Interior has announced that Qatari and GCC countries citizens can use their ID cards to travel to and from the country and other GCC countries as of Friday, local media reported.

“As of Friday, April 29, 2022, Qatari citizens and citizens of other GCC countries can use their ID cards to travel to and from Qatar and other GCC countries,” the Ministry of Interior said in a statement on social media.

Qatari citizens travelling to other Gulf countries shall consider travel requirements for the countries to which they want to travel, the statement added.

This measure will facilitate the movement of citizens of the GCC countries and is in line with the gradual lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.

Qatar has also announced an exemption from online registration for GCC nationals, GCC residents, EU nationals and EU residents, who meet the immunity criteria, for entry into the country.

As per the Ehteraz website, where travellers arriving in Qatar have to pre-register, it is mentioned that GCC nationals and GCC residents who meet the immunity criteria COVID health apps (mentioned below) used in any of the GCC countries shall be accepted in Qatar and shall be exempted from online registration and are required to proceed to any authorized private clinics for Rapid Antigen Test within 24 hours of their arrival in Qatar.

Due to risks to civil aviation operating within the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman region, including Qatar, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued an advisory Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) and/or a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR). Embargoes & Restrictions

• Children under 12 years of age are not allowed to travel in Business class, even if accompanied by an Adult.
• All QR flights operating to and from Dubai “Al Maktoum Airport (DWC)” are not eligible for Staff rebate tickets . Due to this, listings cannot be done on DOH- DWC -DOH QR flights.
• QR flight series QR3500-6999 is excluded (subject to change/modifications). 
• All flights not operated by QR. 

Checked baggage

For rebate tickets issued thru Myidtravel , Check-in baggage will be as mentioned in ticket. 

For tickets issued manually as per ZED Agreement (IET), check-in allowance to be mentioned in ticket as below.

Economy Class

• For weight concept sectors - 30kgs/per pax.
• For piece concept sectors - 2 pieces, each not to exceed 23kg and a maximum dimension of 158cm (62in).

Business class

• For weight concept sectors - 40Kg / Per pax.
• For piece concept sectors - 2 pieces, each not to exceed 32kg and a maximum dimension of 158cm (62in).

Cabin Baggage

• As per Qatarairways.com
• As per industry practise ZED passengers will have lower priority over QR revenue passengers.
• QR staff will have a higher priority over other airline staff holding ZED tickets.
• For Confirmed Bookings: QR web site www.qatarairways.com.qa
• For Standby Bookings: Report to Check-in counters with listing.
• Not available for Standby (or "Space Available") passengers.
• QR Stations have obligation to refuse improperly dressed ID passengers.
• Staff and their families are required to wear “Smart Casual”. Clothing should be neat, free of damage, well maintained, appropriately fitted, and in good condition.

Acceptable attire as below:

• Smart jeans/denim and chinos that are neat, plain and appropriately fitted are acceptable in any cabin.
• Polo shirt, collarless plain T-shirt, collared shirt, blouse, smart dress or skirt (knee-length or longer).
• Sneakers/trainers/boots that are plain, color neutral and overall presentable are acceptable in any cabin.
• Smart Casual ladies' sandals (flat or heeled) similar to those that would be worn to the office.
• Full professional national dress (male & female Qatari, GCC or other nationalities) including appropriate sandals.
• Children aged 12 years and below traveling in any cabin are allowed to wear more casual clothing (i.e. shorts, T-shirts, running shoes).

Strictly not allowed for all cabins is shown as below:

• Jeans that are dirty, or too distressed, with any holes or rips.
• "Overly revealing" clothing, sweatpants, sportswear attire, beach clothing, and any kind of shorts or athletic or athleisure wear.
• Flip-flops, sliders, beach slippers, croc-style shoes/sandals, Birkenstock-style sandals.
• Clothing that is vulgar or violates community standards or decency is never appropriate, including items that have words, terms, or pictures that may be offensive to others.
• Hats of any kind, including caps.
• Any tight, short skirts or dresses above the knee, see-through, revealing and sleeveless clothing (shoulders must be covered).
• Tip: To avoid last minute inconveniences owing to dress code issues and unnecessary debates during boarding time, please refrain from using attire that may be misunderstood as restricted.

  Special service requests

Special meals

• It is not possible to pre-book special meals for rebate/standby passengers.

Seat requests

• Seat requests not permitted on Staff Travel. However, if the flight is wide open, the check-in staff may ask your option for an isle or window seat, but this is subject to availability.
• Even if you are assigned a specific seat at check-in, this may be changed to accommodate commercial requirements, if any.

Infant safety seats

• Use of safety seat for an Infant is not permitted on board.

Unaccompanied minors

• Not permitted.
• No other Special service requests is permitted when travelling on Standby / Space Available tickets.

Upgrade policy

• Please do not ask any QR staff for an upgrade.

Flight deck

• Acceptance of any person in the flight deck of QR Aircraft is prohibited.
• Comprehensive Travel Insurance recommended for passengers own benefit, as QR shall not compensate for any injury, illness or loss of money, documents or other personal possessions etc. during the passengers stay away from home.

Class difference refunds

• Class difference refund is not given, if staff passenger traveled on a lower cabin than the ticketed cabin.

  Back-up tickets

• QR expects all interline employees and/or their eligible nominees to carry back up tickets issued by their respective employing carrier.

A Brit travel addict who has spent thousands ticking off 35 countries in the past two years has warned others of a disastrous mistake in one which nearly cost her her freedom.

Blogger Laura Kemp spends £30k a year feeding her wanderlust, having recently visited the likes of Bora Bora and Fji. But in one less-than-blissful experience, the 33-year-old found herself detained after a bottle of rum was confiscated from her at Qatar .

Laura, originally from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, made the careless mistake in forgetting the country's strict alcohol laws on a recent trip. People in the Middle Eastern country face up to six months in prison and a £600 fine for violating its laws around alcohol, whilst foreigners also face deportation.

She spoke out to warn other travellers after the bottle of coconut Takamaka rum she'd bought in the Seychelles as a souvenir was spotted as she went through customs. “Immediately, multiple staff took me away for questioning, a process that felt both surreal and intimidating," she said.

“Although the staff were respectful, I was completely in the dark as to what was happening, and my boyfriend had to wait for me for hours while I was going through the ordeal. I remember feeling so nervous about what was going to happen - would I be deported? Would I get a criminal record?

“The officers explained the seriousness of alcohol -related offences in Qatar, emphasising that I could have faced much harsher consequences, including a longer period of imprisonment or even deportation, had they not considered the circumstances of my case and my lack of intent to break the law. In the end, they kept the rum, and I was permitted to leave, but this experience was a stark reminder of the importance of understanding and respecting local customs and regulations, especially concerning alcohol. I'll never make the same mistake again".

In 2011, Irish citizen Conor Hayes was sentenced to one month in prison in the country after being convicted of drinking without a licence and public obscenity. He spoke out ahead of the 2022 Qatar World Cup warning Brits of its strict drinking and marital sex culture .

‌As well as far-flung exotic locations, Laura has also visited numerous places against Foreign Office advice, such as Palestine , Kosovo and North Korea . “I've been obsessed with seeing as much of the world as I can and am forever organising my next trip if I'm not already overseas,“ said Laura, whose travel bug began in 2012 while living in Vancouver.

“I never had the opportunity to travel when I was younger, so I was always intrigued by stories of childhood friends who went away." She has now visited 58 countries, including South Korea, Japan , Fiji, North Macedonia, Serbia, Azerbaijan , Armenia, Georgia, Canada and USA.

Posting about her travels on TikTok , she also admitted she's received backlash from some calling her "spoilt" for spending so much money on travelling, which she estimates has cost her about £30,000 a year. “I've always self-funded my travel and worked incredibly hard along the journey, so these comments make me laugh," she said.

A Qatar ID number is a unique number issued to every citizen and resident of Qatar. It is an 11-digit number that stores an individual’s details in the government database. A valid Qatar ID is essential for an expatriate resident’s entry and residence rights in Qatar.

What is Qatar ID Card?

A Qatar ID card (QID) is a photo identity card that each citizen or resident of Qatar is issued and required to carry and display under certain circumstances. The card contains the person’s details, including photo, name, QID number, date of birth, nationality, signature, sponsor details etc.

Each time the expatriate’s visa is renewed, the QID card’s validity will be renewed, and a new card will be printed. Since Qatar has stopped issuing visa stickers for residents, the QID card is the official document for entry at airport and land borders.

For a resident to be allowed entry to Qatar, he/she should have a valid QID. Here is how you can check the validity of the Qatar ID (QID status) using the QID number :

Step 1: Go to MOI Website

Here is the link to Qatar’s Ministry of Interior (MOI) website .

Step 2: Click on the “Inquiries” button

This is the first icon with a magnifying glass. You can also get this from the “MOI Services” drop-down menu.

Step 3: Click on the “Other Inquiries”

The “Other Inquiries” tab is on the left side of the “MOI Services” page.

Step 4: Click on the “Official Documents”

The “Official Documents” link is the first one with a Qatari passport icon.

Step 5: Enter your Qatar ID Number

Step 6: Enter the captcha code and click “Search”

After clicking the Search button, you can see the validity of the Qatar ID. It would also show other details like Qatar Driving License validity . If the resident is out of the country, it will show how long the resident has been out of the country.

If you typed the wrong Qatar ID number and received no results, press the “Reset” button and type again.

You can also check the validity of Qatar ID using the QID holder’s passport number. Follow the below steps to check Qatar ID status by passport number :

Step 1: Go to “Other Inquiries” on the MOI Website

Here is the link to the Other Inquiries page on the MOI website.

Step 2: Click on “Official Documents”

Step 3: Enter Passport Number

Step 4: Select Nationality from the dropdown menu

When entering a Passport Number, you also need to select the Nationality. This is not required when searching by QID number.

Step 5: Enter the verification code and click on the “Search” button

The status of all your official documents, including QID and Driving License, will be shown.

Metrash2 , the Ministry of Interior mobile app, has added a helpful ” Wallet ” feature, where you can access digital copies of your personal identity documents for use with Ministry of Interior (MOI) services.

The documents available in the E-Wallet include:

• Vehicle Permit (Istimara)
• Fancy Number Ownership

How To Check Qatar ID on Metrash App

Here is how you can access the Wallet feature from the Metrash2 app:

Step 1: Enter your QID number and PIN code to log in to the Metrash2 app

Step 2: from the main menu on top, select “wallet”, step 3: select the document you want to display.

Using this E-Wallet service , you can access copies of your Qatar ID, Driving License , Vehicle Registration (Istimara) , and fancy number ownership. This can be used for official transactions while approaching various MOI departments or when demanded by police or security officials.

However, please note that this does not replace plastic cards. You still need plastic cards for travelling through international borders (airports, land borders).

How can I check my Qatar ID online?

Qatar ID validity can be checked online on the MOI portal by going to “Official Documents” under “Other Inquiries”. You can use the QID number or passport number to check the QID status on this page.

Hi Arshad, If you let without cancelling the visa, normally there will be a ban for the remaining period of your contract. In your case it will be 20 months. However this may be different in some cases. If you have any friends in Qatar, please ask them to check with Immigration by showing a copy of your Qatar ID card.

How about visit visa extension? Should be ok right as long as he stays inside country?

• Singapore Loses ‘World’s Best Airport’ Crown to Qatar

(Bloomberg) -- The race for the “world’s best airport” crown has been a two-horse affair in recent years, with Doha’s Hamad International and Singapore Changi leading the pack.

This year the title has switched, with 12-time winner Singapore being edged out of the top spot by its Middle Eastern rival in the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2024 .

In a strong showing for Asia, Seoul Incheon bagged third place — also being named 2024’s most family friendly airport — while Tokyo’s twin facilities of Haneda and Narita  took fourth and fifth spots.

Hong Kong airport saw a significant boost, up 22 positions to 11th place after the city shook off its Covid-19 hangover and passenger numbers rose.

Once again US airports were nowhere to be seen near the top of the table, with the highest ranked, Seattle-Tacoma, slipping six places to 24.

Europe continued to have a strong showing, with Paris Charles de Gaulle, Munich, Zurich and Istanbul all maintaining positions in the top 10.

In other moves:

“This year HIA celebrates its milestone 10th year of operations and we are truly honored that passengers have voted us Best Airport in the World for a third time,” said Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer Badr Al Meer.

The Skytrax World Airport Awards are determined by customer satisfaction survey.

Operating since 1999, Skytrax's World Airport Awards are voted by airport customers of over 100 nationalities. The survey evaluates customers' experience across multiple factors including check-in, transfers, shopping and security. This year's survey was conducted between August 2023 and March 2024, and over 570 airports were featured in the survey results.

All entries for the survey are screened, with duplicate or ineligible entries deleted, and no membership subscription or charges are needed to participate in the survey.

Nonetheless, Skytrax has received some criticism over the years with one report in 2015  from a travel industry news site suggesting that the organisation had inflated the figures of its survey participants. Skytrax also received backlash in 2019 after it updated the ratings of certain airlines, including downgrading Turkish Airlines to three stars – prompting those in the aviation community to question Skytrax's ranking methods.

Negara ini memiliki sisi gelap yang tidak banyak diekspos. Kira-kira apa saja? Berikut lima sisi gelap Qatar yang belum banyak orang tahu.

1. Eksploitasi pekerja migran

Sudah menjadi rahasia umum bahwa Qatar kerap menjadi negara tujuan para pekerja migran, terutama dari Afrika, Asia Selatan, dan Asia Tenggara, termasuk Indonesia. Para pekerja migran tentu berharap gaji yang tinggi di negara makmur tersebut. Kemudian, dapat memperbaiki perekonomian pribadi maupun keluarganya di kampung halaman.

Sayangnya, isu eksploitasi pekerja migran di Qatar semakin santer setelah gelaran Piala Dunia 2022. Dilansir dari France24 , pada Agustus 2022, Amnesty International menyatakan lebih dari 15.021 orang asing dari segala usia dan pekerjaan telah meninggal di Qatar antara tahun 2010-2019. Namun, penyebab kematiannya tidak jelas.

Para migran juga menjadi korban sistem eksploitatif dengan kafala sebagai pusatnya. Sistem ini memberi majikan banyak kekuasaan atas pekerjanya, bahkan seringkali menyita paspor mereka pada saat kedatangan. 

2. Sistem hukum yang kerap dianggap tidak transparan

Layaknya mayoritas negara-negara di Timur Tengah, Qatar juga menganut sistem hukum syariah Islam yang terbilang ketat. Bagi negara-negara dengan penduduk mayoritas Islam, hal ini akan dianggap lumrah dan mudah untuk beradaptasi selama di sana.

Namun, bagi negara-negara Barat, Australia, dan penduduk muslim sebagai minoritas, hal tersebut bisa menjadi tantangan tersendiri, bahkan sisi gelap lain dari Qatar.

Contohnya, dilansir Daily Mail , obat-obatan terlarang memang tidak boleh dibawa maupun digunakan. Hukumannya tentu penjara yang lama. Lebih parah lagi, pihak berwenang Qatar juga bisa menahan dan mendeportasi wisatawan asing yang membawa obat HIV dan hepatitis. Hal ini juga bisa terjadi pada mereka yang memiliki hasil tes positif mengidap salah satu penyakit tersebut.

Jika ada orang asing yang ditahan atau ditangkap, pihak berwenang Qatar bisa jadi tidak memberi tahu pemerintah negara asal. Sistem hukum di Qatar sering dianggap tidak transparan dan rentan terhadap pengaruh politik.

Politik di Qatar memang cenderung stabil, tetapi cukup dipengaruhi negara-negara Timur Tengah lainnya. Pengadilan juga kerap dianggap tidak adil, terutama dalam kasus-kasus yang melibatkan warga asing.

Tingkat keamanan di Qatar cukup tinggi, sehingga banyak solo traveler yang gak ragu liburan ke sini sendirian. Negara ini juga dianggap ramah bagi wisatawan perempuan. Meski diberlakukan aturan berpakaian, tapi mudah dipatuhi.

Namun, ketidaksetaraan gender masih sering terjadi dalam beberapa aspek sosial dan pekerjaan. Perempuan di Qatar akan menghadapi berbagai batasan dalam hal perjalanan dan aktivitas tertentu.

Misalnya seperti perempuan dilarang keluar sendirian hingga usia tertentu, pemeriksaan ginekologi invasif tanpa persetujuan juga pernah dialami turis asing di bandara, dan perempuan masih kurang terlindungi dari kekerasan, termasuk dalam keluarga.

4. Biaya hidup tinggi

Sebagai negara yang kaya, tentu berbanding lurus dengan biaya hidup di Qatar. Harga makanan, akomodasi, dan transportasi di sini tergolong mahal bagi wisatawan maupun warga asing yang tinggal di sini. Apalagi saat digelar acara internasional, biaya hotel bisa melonjak lebih tinggi.

Biaya sewa akomodasi di Qatar termasuk 10 besar termahal di dunia. Kamu bisa menyewa hotel biasa dengan harga minimal Rp500 ribu per malam. Namun, rata-rata harga hotel yang cukup baik dan layak minimal Rp1 juta per malam, jika dikonversi dalam rupiah. 

Demikian pula dengan makanan di Qatar yang gak kalah mahal, meski dianggap relatif lebih murah dibanding negara-negara dengan biaya hidup sepadan. Makanan cepat saji harganya sekitar US$6,50 atau US$7,50 yang berarti minimal Rp100 ribu. Sedangkan, bahan makanan seperti, tepung, saus, keju, bawang, harganya rata-rata US$8.

5. Cuaca panas yang ekstrem

Suhu udara di Qatar bisa mencapai 46-50 derajat Celsius yang bisa membuat kondisi tubuh tidak nyaman. Pemerintah sudah melakukan berbagai tindakan untuk menghadapi kondisi tersebut. Misalnya, jalanan di Kota Doha dicat dengan lapisan biru, pemasangan AC tepi jalan, dan menggunakan pigmen pemantul panas khusus.

Cuaca panas dapat berpengaruh pada kesehatan, terutama bagi orang-orang dari belahan bumi utara dan selatan. Hal ini dapat menyebabkan dehidrasi parah, muntah-muntah, bahkan pingsan. Sejumlah perhelatan olahraga internasional juga mengalami perubahan jadwal, saking panasnya.
