This road trip traverses the overseas highway, where 43 of 1,700 islands are connected by bridges, to the southernmost tip of Florida. You can drive from Fort Lauderdale or Miami to Key West in 4 hours.

Make the trip over a few days and stop at the 16 best stops from Miami to Key West .

The north end of the Florida Keys has Biscayne National Park with crystal clear blue water and the world’s 3rd largest coral reef system with lots of outdoor activities.

16. Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona

There’s no place like the Grand Canyon. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a first-time visitor, there’s no wrong way to experience this natural wonder.

For the truly adventurous, a hike to the bottom of the canyon is a must. The trailhead for the Bright Angel Trail is located near the visitor center, and hikers can choose between a day hike and an overnight camping trip.

There’s no better way to appreciate the scale of the canyon than by spending some time at its bottom.

For those who want to stay closer to the top, there are plenty of vantage points from which to take in the incredible views. Yavapai Point and Mather Point are two of the most popular viewpoints.

Art enthusiasts will enjoy Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, the largest in North America. Sports lovers should catch a Red Rox game at Fenway. Finally, don’t forget to get a peek of the Charles River, where you might see some collegiate crews rowing.

Plan an extra day or two when you visit because there are plenty of great day trips from Boston too.

37. New Orleans, Louisiana

With major events like Mardi Gras, the Jazz Festival, and others, New Orleans is one of the best places to vacation in the United States.

Watch street performers at Jackson Square and admire their impressive skills. Hop on a streetcar and discover all the fun and wild parts of New Orleans, including St. Charles Avenue, the Garden District, and Uptown New Orleans. 

Visit the French Quarter, packed with museums, art galleries, restaurants, and of course notorious bars. Since New Orleans is a foodie paradise, you have to try beignets from Cafe du Monde!

Other yummy favorites – the original Muffaletta from Central Grocery Deli, and hot dogs from Dat Dog. Don’t leave the Big Easy without meals at Commander’s Palace and Jacques-Imo’s.

Those who don’t mind venturing outside the city (approximately 1-hour drive) should discover some of the best southern plantation estates in the country, such as Laura Plantation, New Orleans Oak Alley Plantation, and San Francisco Plantation.

An airboat tour in the Bayou is another great day trip and one of the most memorable, super fun things we’ve done in Louisiana.

38. Miami, Florida

Dreaming of a beach getaway? Miami’s blend of different cultures creates the ultimate destination for entertainment. Loved for its spectacular beaches and vibrant art scene, the coastal metropolis has something to offer for everyone. 

Stop by South Beach – the most iconic area in Miami. Wander through its beautiful Art Deco District to enjoy a sprinkle of 1930’s nostalgia.

Spend the day soaking up rays and cool beach vibes. Whenever hunger kicks in, stop by Bayside Market has a lively atmosphere while enjoy views of the bay. 

To get your daily dose of culture, plan a visit to one of Miami’s greatest treasures – the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, which offers a little taste of Europe with its elegant furniture. 

Other great Miami beaches include Surfside for postcard-worthy vistas and Sunny Isles Beach to be in the midst of all action. There is no doubt the coastal metropolis is one of the most fun USA places to explore.

39. Charleston, South Carolina

From charming cobblestone streets and antebellum architecture to world-class restaurants and lively nightlife – Charleston is surely one of the best US destinations.

Take a ghost tour in the oldest and most haunted city in America, with over 100 recognized otherworldly beings.

A trip to the Lowcountry would be incomplete without shopping for antiques and visiting high-end boutiques on King Street, which also has fantastic restaurants and bars. 

Join the locals for seafood at Chubby Fish or rev up your taste buds with a delicious cheddar and jalapeno biscuit from Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit.

Stop by the Charleston Farmers Market, which is considered one of the best in the South. Not only will you get your hands on amazing produce, but you may even catch a live performance.

Sullivan’s Island beach should be on your itinerary too. Although it is the smallest of Charleston’s beaches, it is the most pristine.

40. Seattle, Washington

Consistently ranked among the ten best places to live in the United States, Seattle’s coffee culture, grunge music scene, and lush evergreen forests will charm you too.

Visit the top of the Space Needle – an iconic part of Seattle’s skyline with 360 degree views. While in the area, have crispy pancakes at Paju or delicious ramen at Cafe Goldinblack.

Set aside some time to explore one of the country’s most famous public markets – Pike Place Market. Then, take the commuter ferry across Puget Sound to Bainbridge Island and discover the stunning city from a new perspective.

For culture freaks, paying a visit to the Museum of Pop Culture – MoPop – is a must. One of the most beautiful libraries in America can be found at the University of Washington’s Suzzalo Library, which feels exactly like Hogwarts.

With endless opportunities to have fun, there is no doubt Seattle is one of the coolest USA places to visit.

The type of accommodations you choose for your trip can actually be part of the adventure all on it’s own. Rent a converted Sprinter van or RV to be your home AND transportation on a USA road trip.

Stay in a luxurious Glamping tent to add extra pizazz to your vacation. Or enjoy nature and pitch a tent. It’s more rustic but super fun with your friends and family.

41. USA Glamping Trips

Accommodations range from luxurious to rustic in permanent tent structures, cabins, teepees, chuck wagons, dome tents, yurts and tree houses. We LOVE glamping!!

Glamping in Big Sur under massive redwood trees in a king bed with an electric blanket and a push button campfire is right up my alley.

It’s one of the coolest glamping destinations in California . There are a ton of options!

We’ve glamped in Sonoma near vineyards, at El Capitan near Solvang , at Autocamp in a airstream trailer and more. Glamping with kids is really fun too!

42. Tent Camping Trips in the USA

I was so nervous to do our first tent camping trip at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon but it was a blast.

We took the dogs and piled in with an amazing 4″ memory foam mattress that made our inexpensiv e awesome tent so cozy! Obviously you can only have that much gear when you’re not far from your car.

We did it again on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land to watch Speed Week on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. That was even better because the ground was hard packed salt (basically no dirt).

If you’ve never been to Crater Lake or Bonneville Salt Flats , get them on your USA bucket list. They are both jaw droppingly cool! There are incredible places to tent camp all over the USA.

43. Backpacking Trips in the USA

Backpacking, as the name implies involves a hike to a remote area, where you carry everything you need on your back – like food, water and shelter.

Since you are carrying everything, you have to really conserve on the amount of weight. It’s also important to follow the leave no trace behind principles .

We planned our first backpacking trip to Havasupai and we can’t wait! That amazing blue water at Havasu Falls has been on our USA bucket list for years now.

In addition to Havasupai, the other beginner backpacking trips that are on our USA bucket list are the Lost Coast Trail and John Muir Trail in California, the Point of Arches Trail in Olympic National Park, Washington, and the Golden Cathedral in Escalante, Utah.

44. Rent a Converted Sprinter Van

Campervan photos on Instagram make everyone swoon. There’s something about the idea of opening up the door to an incredible view and living life completely free.

A sprinter van allows you to have a mini RV that goes anywhere and off the grid if there’s solar power.

45. RV for a USA Road Trip

I have a friend that goes RV camping and I’ll be honest, I thought it was 100% not for me but I’m starting to rethink my position.

There’s so much space and some of them are seriously luxurious. The obvious benefit to an RV is that it holds more people, so it’s better for a family trip than a campervan.

We live in Los Angeles so it’s really easy to feel like you’re going on vacation 30 miles away because it can take 2 hours to get there. Haha!! For us, staying in a hotel across town would open up a world of possibilities we never touch.
• Go hiking , take a long bike ride, or take advantage of an exercise class you’ve heard about. Take up a new sport you’ve wanted to try like rowing , stand up paddle boarding (SUP), surfing or a boot camp and kickstart your fitness regime.

Big Sur to San Diego is the most incredible road trip you will ever take. Or if I would say it correctly, it’s actually… San Diego up to Big Sur! I live in San Diego and I’ve personally done this before and the PCH and all the views up the coast is absolutely incredible. Totally amazing and probably one of the best ‘drives’ you will ever take. I can’t think of a better road trip you could ever possibly take, if you visit San Diego, consider taking a drive up the coast on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) up to Big Sur. What Makes Good Tourism?

You know what good tourism feels like. When you are visiting a great place, like Fogo Island, Luang Prabang or Sisimiut, you can feel the healthy balance that good tourism creates.  That balance is the result of (mostly) everyone being happy with the tourism industry – firstly residents, but also tourists and governments. 

Let’s call these places ‘ successful destinations. ’ This, by the way, is not a life-time appointment. You’ll remember Prof. Butler’s tourism lifecycle model, and you’ll have seen great destinations of your 1996 gap year disintegrate into the overtouristed destinations of 2019.  Good tourism takes good governance, management and oversight – day after day, year over year.  

When we look at successful destinations, we can see that there are specific strategies they pursue, year after year, to ensure long-term, good tourism: 

1. They measure value:  Successful destinations base their strategies on the value of tourists, not the volume.  Good tourism isn’t necessarily expensive or elitist, but it is quality.  To do this, destinations need to measure beyond just the number of arrivals.  In addition, they  track the progress of indicators like:  

• Spend per tourist
• Length of stay
• Dispersal around the destination
• Year round employment in tourism (vs seasonal employment)
• Tourists visiting in the off-season

2. They ensure the community is pro-tourism: Tourists need to feel welcome – and people will welcome tourists when they feel that tourism is a positive force in their communities. It is a positive force if it’s improving their way of life, not harming it.  Infrastructure should not be built only for tourists; it should consider the needs of locals first. Tourism is a positive force when all voices are heard, all cultures celebrated, including those from minority communities. Additionally, the community needs to feel like they have a say in tourism development and that there are effective mechanisms to participate in the conversation. New Zealand surveys its population once a year, in a survey called ‘mood of the nation’ to measure how people are feeling about tourism.

3. They have clearly articulated limits of acceptable change: Destination managers (with stakeholder participation) have clearly defined how much they are willing to see their place changed. This changes the focus away from numbers to impact.  Limits of acceptable change focus on qualitative factors, not just numbers. There’s no scientific method for this – it comes from dialogue amongst all the parties.

4. They are safe: Good destinations are safe places. They are safe from political or military conflicts and they ensure that tourists are safe by requiring guides to be certified, have regulations related to rescue or equipment, etc.

5. They are four season: Successful destinations are able to spread tourism across the year to ensure consistency for the industry.

6. Government prioritizes sustainable tourism: Governments that understand the value of tourism will prioritize it and create policies that increase competitiveness, spur innovation and support the industry. Destination managers have a lobbying role to ensure that tourism is understood and prioritized at the highest levels. They ensure that qualified and trained teams lead the government bodies on tourism.

7. Charge a premium: Tourism is a price-sensitive industry, but fighting on price is a race to the bottom. Successful destinations don’t do it. Tourism suppliers should seek to add value to their products and charge accordingly.

It’s that time of year again to ask ourselves, “What’s new, cool, and innovative in tourism?”. We’ve compiled a list of new, innovative tourism business ideas for 2023 so you can find your niche. 

The travel and tourism industry is in a state of constant flux, never more so than in the last few years. Every change and new trend brings with it an opportunity for tour operators to deliver what their customers old and new want—as well as add new tours and experiences they don’t yet even know they want. 

  As countries began to ease restrictions, 2022 saw the travel industry rebound from 2021 and 2020. Despite new global challenges appearing during 2022 and continuing into 2023, including the Russian-Ukraine war and the global economic fallout, the most important trend of all is that people still want to travel and are even budgeting for more travel.

As one travel professional interviewed for TravelAge West ’s article on travel trends put it: “It’s almost like travel went from a discretionary spend to an essential spend for a lot of people.”

Despite all that is still happening in the world, around the industry there is a continued air of optimism in 2023. Travel Pulse noted that “ while 2022 was the year of recovery [recovered almost 60 percent of its pre-pandemic levels], 2023 is poised to be the year of reinvention.” Booking.com research prompted them to label 2023 as a year of “creative imagination of travel.” Skyscanner’s Travel Trends report concluded that “Post-COVID restrictions, travellers continue to prioritize adventures abroad and embrace travel freedoms with relish.”

Here are some of the latest major trends and innovative tourism business ideas to keep an eye on and potentially incorporate into the tours and travel experiences you offer. We’ll also highlight a few of the more unusual and niche trends that could take off during 2023 or in the longer term, or just inspire some “out of the box” thinking when looking at your own products and services.

1. Transformational trips

A buzz phrase you’ll hear a lot in 2023 is “transformational retreat.” This refers to travel experiences that cater to people who want to undergo a significant personal or spiritual transformation. Retreats and activities include meditation, yoga, therapy, workshops, and other experiential practices. Most promote self-awareness, personal growth, and positive change, typically taking place in a secluded and peaceful setting and led by experienced facilitators or coaches. 

Booking.com’s Travel Predictions 2023 report called these trips “peace and pleasure pilgrimages.” The report found that 42 percent of travelers want to focus on their mental and physical health, including retreats to smooth the processes of pregnancy and menopause.” A large proportion of travelers are interested in meditation or mindfulness retreats. Some retreats even take the word “trip” literally, catering to people interested in the potential therapeutic benefits of the controlled and supervised use of “magic mushrooms” and other psychedelics.

2. Forest bathing and digital detoxing

Not everyone is looking for a transformational outcome from their vacation; many simply want to unwind and enjoy some quality “me time.” Wellness vacations have been a growing tourism business trend for some time, with demand accelerated by the pandemic. Tours that offer people the chance to pamper themselves and generally recalibrate are likely to be extremely popular for the foreseeable future.

Two specific innovative tourism business ideas that look likely to be especially popular in 2023 are “forest bathing” and “digital detoxing.” 

Forest bathing, or Shinrin-yoku , originated in Japan. It involves becoming immersed in nature to enhance physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It can be as simple as going for a long walk through a forest, or sitting by a lake and taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the natural surroundings. Research has shown that forest bathing can reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, and even boost the immune system and reduce blood pressure and heart rate. After the last few years we’ve all been through, it’s no wonder it’s proving popular with travelers.

In a similar vein, many people want to unplug and undertake a “digital detox” where you never need to ask for the Wi-Fi password because there is no Wi-Fi. They could be seeking respite from “doom scrolling” through social media and news feeds on their digital devices, or they just want a break from the glowing screens so prevalent in their day-to-day. Trips that encourage travelers to leave their devices at home will be popular, whether to wellness retreats that ban or discourage digital devices or an out-of-the-way destination that makes electronic communication extremely difficult.

3. Off-grid and “survival” travel

One way to both commune with nature and unplug from your digital life is to go where no signal can reach you. Booking.com’s report found that 55 percent of travelers want to spend their vacations off-grid, resulting in an increase in tour operators offering trips to places where you can’t easily be reached. This could be a lodge in a remote part of a country or backcountry camping.

A related trend is the opposite of “glamping.” A growing number of travelers want to challenge themselves to survive in inhospitable conditions (you know… just in case), while learning new skills at the same time. In Booking.com’s report, 58 percent of travelers want to learn survival skills on holiday—everything from fire lighting and food foraging to the more full-on prepping for societal breakdown. Zombie survival camp anyone?

4. Hush trips, workcations, and micro-cations

Shhh, don’t tell anyone (especially your co-workers and definitely not your boss), but “hush trips” are on the rise. A hush trip is a secret trip taken by an employee without their employer’s knowledge. It’s all linked to the huge rise in remote working. People who work in a different city and country from their employer can theoretically do their work from anywhere. However, a hush trip can be slightly different from a “workcation,” another popular trend in the age of remote working, when an employer’s permission is often sought. On a hush trip, no actual work might be done; the employee wants a real holiday to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and recharge, but they may not use their vacation days to take it. They complete their work and take a day or two off without anyone knowing (they hope,) perhaps logging in now and then for appearances’ sake. Or, they may travel somewhere and continue to work, while enjoying their downtime in a new place, again without telling anyone. 

Many hush trips are “micro-cations,” short trips often taken close to home, often at the last minute. The micro-cation trend has continued to grow for the last few years, as people look for quick, convenient, and often budget-friendly getaways that don’t require a lot of planning. 

When you combine the acceptance of remote working among many more employers with a large number of people who left the office behind and didn’t miss it for a second, you have an opportunity to create workcation and hush trip experiences for digital nomads and remote workers.

5. Traveling for “bleisure”

The travel industry does love a good old word mash-up to describe the latest trend. Hot on the heels of workcations, we have the related trend of “bleisure”—a name coined to describe the trend of business travelers tacking on some leisure time to the end of business trips. Where a workcation is often a longer trip designed around work, the growth of bleisure trips reflects the fact that as business travel bounces back, people still want as much vacation time as they can get. 

Although the economy could affect business travel in 2023 as companies cut costs, it’s worth keeping an eye on the business and conference market to target business travelers who want to carve out some vacation time to explore a destination on their own time.

6. Set-jetting

If you’ve ever wanted to visit the set of your favorite movie or TV show, you’re not alone. A top travel trend for 2023 is “set-jetting,” when travelers visit destinations primarily because they were featured in a popular movie, TV show, or book. According to research, 39 percent of travelers have booked trips to places featured on shows or movies ( Expedia ). While people have long been drawn to iconic movie locations, perhaps the earliest example of mass set-jetting was New Zealand’s tourism industry getting a huge boost after the country played a leading role in the “Lord of The Rings” movies. Fans of the “Outlander” books and TV series have also been making pilgrimages to Scotland to see the country that provides the backdrop for their favorite show.

People don’t just want to visit the actual physical set and filming location, but also just the cities or countries featured in a particular production. Keep an eye out for popular shows where the location is as much the star of the show as the actors, such as “The Crown” (England,) “Emily in Paris” (Paris,) and “The White Lotus” (Sicily), as they could trigger a surge in demand for particular locations and experiences relating to the shows, such as a themed tour.

7. Sustainable tourism and electric travel

“Ecotourism” has been on the rise for several years, and continues to be popular. According to Booking.com’s Sustainable Travel Report 2022 , 81 percent of global travelers say sustainable travel is important to them, and 50 percent are influenced by news reports on climate change when it comes to booking choices. 

So-called “ecotours” let tourists enjoy a vacation while also learning about environmental and sustainability issues in a particular location. Some enable people to do something tangible to help, such as volunteering to plant trees or help to restore habitats. Many travelers these days also seek out “small footprint” or socially-responsible travel. This may not be an eco-tour as such; it could just mean they favor tour companies that take steps to minimize the impact of their tours or incorporate a social responsibility element. 

Many travelers also want to stay in planet-friendly accommodations. According to Booking.com’s report, 57 percent of travelers prefer accommodation with sustainable certification. Another related trend to watch is road trips or other travel using electric vehicles. Some car rental companies are adding electric cars to their fleets, and VW has even built an electric version of their classic camper van, the ID Buzz. Within cities, travelers might want to do tours on electric bikes and focus on other more sustainable modes of transport rather than the traditional taxi and car hire approach. In the not too distant future, electric air travel may even become the norm thanks to companies like Eviation that are developing electric planes.

8. Indigenous experiences

Countries around the world are making an increased effort to reverse past wrongs when it comes to treatment of Indigenous peoples, while also empowering Indigenous communities to take a lead in areas like travel and tourism. Canada is one nation going through a period of reconciliation as it faces up to and attempts to make amends for its colonial past. This has resulted in a huge growth in Indigenous-led travel companies, experiences, resorts, and accommodation options. 

Australia and New Zealand are also seeing a growth in opportunities for travelers to support and learn about Indigenous communities, histories, and cultures.

If you are an Indigenous entrepreneur, you may find great opportunities available with an increase in programs that support Indigenous tourism in these countries. For others, there may be opportunities for partnering with or supporting Indigenous-led businesses and organizations in your region.

Inflation and cost of living rises mean while the desire to travel is still strong, many travelers will still have at least one eye on their budget. This could mean more interest from thrifty travelers in camping, self-catering, and all-inclusive holidays. Activities and vacations that involve renting rather than buying equipment could also be more popular.

10. Luxury cruises and upscale all-inclusive

While there will be a lot of budget-conscious travelers in 2023, there are also plenty of opportunities in the luxury travel market, including two types of travel luxury travelers may previously have turned their noses up at—all-inclusive trips and cruises. The luxury cruise market, as well as the cruise market in general, is set to rebound in style. CN Traveller reported on “ a new breed of luxury yachts from the world’s leading hotel brands,” including  The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection , which boasts  “ the most sophisticated and expensive civilian ship ever built in Spain.” Cruise companies like Scenic and Emerald Cruises are expecting high demand for spots on their luxury ships . If you are on a luxury cruise route, catering your activities to a luxury-seeking clientele, with prices to match, might be worth considering.

Cruises tend to be all-inclusive as standard, but there is also a growth in upscale all-inclusive vacations in general. These experiences offer the best of everything—food, accommodation, and experiences, all for a set (and premium) price. Ikos Resorts will open a new five-star all-inclusive resort in Mallorca in June 2023.

11. Train travel

From the “Flying Scotsman” to the “Orient Express,” there are few more romantic ways to travel than by train. However, train travel is also increasingly overlapping with other trends in our list, as it becomes more popular as a way to travel more sustainably by reducing car and air travel, travel slower (unless we’re talking train travel in Japan) and for longer, and travel to more countries on the same trip.

Train travel can also offer scenic views, comfortable travel with spacious seats, sleeping accommodation for longer or overnight trips, and the opportunity to socialize with other travelers, and convenient access to city centres. Piggy-backing the trend toward more immersive travel experiences, train travel also lets travelers see more of a country while mixing with locals. Many countries and rail companies, especially in Europe, offer passes that let travelers visit multiple places in one trip without leaving the ground. If your tours and activities are near a popular rail route, look for ways to capitalize on the increase in train travel by catering to people who may want something to do for a day or two before they move on.

12. Glamping

During the pandemic, with international travel off the menu for most people,  RV rentals spiked dramatically . Road trips made it easier for tourists to physically distance from other travelers in a post-COVID world, and “glampervan” vacations became popular. Glamping is still on the rise in 2023; the glamping market is expected to reach US$4.1bn in 2028 ( Stratview Research ). Glamping lets people enjoy sleeping and living in the great outdoors, but with a step-up in comfort from traditional camping. Glampers can stay in everything from classic Airstream trailers to yurts and all manner of other non-tent accommodation.

13. Go solo or go social

While “travel bubbles” are no longer required for COVID-related reasons, group travel continues to rise in popularity. Hotels and tour companies increasingly cater to family groups or groups of friends who want to take a memorable trip together. For example, Atticus Hotel  in Oregon’s  Bunkhouse room for groups . It’s not just families making up for lost time with “reunion” or “celebration” travel. Tour operator Contiki noticed an upswing in demand for what they call “social travel” from groups of Gen Z-ers who want to get together on a trip to celebrate birthdays, graduations, and other milestones: “Gen Z want to make up for lost time spent together and get travelling.” Another type of social travel piggybacks the rise of “travel influencers” on social media platforms like Instagram. Some popular influencers are pivoting to provide the opportunity for their followers to literally follow them on a trip. People can go on a trip or do an activity with their favorite influencer and a group of fellow followers.

Of course, not everyone has a posse to travel with or wants to travel with others. Solo travel continues to be very popular and has moved from a niche to a mainstream market. A Skyscanner report found that 40 percent wanted to travel solo for mental health wellness reasons, while singles and divorcees ranked highly for being ready to take a solo trip. The report concludes: “There is no longer any stigma attached to taking a trip on your own, and many tour companies cater specifically to this market.”

In a move that reflects the growing interest in responsible and sustainable travel, hotel company Habitas have opened a number of flat-pack hotels around the world for “like-minded people seeking connection, inspiration and a better future together.”

15. Crypto trips

A number of tour operators and travel companies now offer travelers the ability to pay with cryptocurrency. Some examples include Borrow a Boat , Soneva Resorts  and Get Your Guide . 

16. Dark tourism

There has been a rise in so-called “dark tourism,” when people travel to places or sites associated with disasters and darker historical events. Famous examples include Pearl Harbour, Alcatraz, and Hiroshima. If this is the first you’ve heard of this term, it can sound a bit ghoulish. However, travelers who explore these sites generally do so to pay their respects or learn more about important historical events that hopefully will never be repeated.

17. Sober travel

Sober travel has been around for a while, but it mostly catered to people in recovery. In 2023, sober travel is a subset of wellness travel. Travel companies like Travel Sober and  Sober Outside have pivoted to target anyone who wants a sober vacation.

18. Virtual travel

Forbes Magazine thinks 2023 will be “the year that tourism in the metaverse takes off.” Travel companies can use VR to give potential customers a taste of the experience they can expect from a tour or location. VR can be accessible through web browsers or people can enjoy a much more immersive experience using VR headsets.

19. Nostalgic travel

Booking.com’s 2023 travel predictions found that 88 percent of travelers want to go on a “nostalgic getaway,” whether that’s theme parks we went to as kids, nostalgic movie locations, or other trips down memory lane. 

20. Sleep tourism

Everyone likes a good night’s sleep, especially on vacation, and the travel is waking up to the opportunities offered by a rise in “sleep tourism.” The Park Hyatt New York now offers a stay in their  One Bedroom Sleep Suite by Bryte , while Swedish bed brand Hastens opened a branded Sleep Spa . Good night, sleep well.

It's best to visit during the summer months since Lake Superior is quite cold and foggy throughout the rest of the year. My family heads to this park in the summer months in hopes of spending a few days backpacking , canoeing, and hiking through the near-untouched environment—admiring the nature and wildlife along the way.

Where to stay: While the actual park is best experienced through camping, those who aren't interested in totally roughing it can stay at the Rock Harbor Lodge , centrally located on the main island. Catalina Island, California

Just a hop, skip, and a jump from Los Angeles , Santa Catalina Island is quite literally heaven on Earth. 8 tourism ideas that teach about Washington’s fragile wonders: Travel For Good

From wineries adapting to climate change, to rivers recovering from dam removal projects, to mountaintop scavenger hunts that gather data on threatened species – these trip ideas help us ponder human impacts on the environment.

he weather’s getting warmer, Covid restrictions are easing, and tourist destinations throughout Washington are preparing to welcome summer visitors.

Travel looks different in the pandemic era, according to Michelle Thana with State of Washington Tourism, a nonprofit marketing group. Outdoor recreation areas – like state and national parks, beaches, and islands – are seeing a huge influx of visitors.

“Some of these areas, like the Olympic Peninsula, have already seen visitation recover to greater than 2019 levels,” Thana said.

But the state of the pandemic remains volatile, and many people might be hesitant to plan travel. While Washington saw more visitors last year than in the pandemic’s first year, the number of tourists was still 13% fewer than pre-pandemic, and tourism revenue was down 19% from 2019, according to new research published by Tourism Economics.

Those who are ready to resume travel are seeking experiences that leave them with more than a pretty post on Instagram. They increasingly want trips with purpose, Thana said. They want to learn about how human activities affect the natural world, and they want to help give back where they can.

So KUOW is spotlighting local travel ideas that teach about our state’s natural wonders and contribute to conservation efforts.

Most of the locations on this list are outdoors. They’re all currently open, with some Covid restrictions in place. Check out all eight travel ideas below. And tune in to KUOW to hear our dispatches from each location.

1) Olympic Peninsula: Explore a riverbank recovering from dam removal projects

The Olympic National Park attracts a steady flow of visitors to Washington’s western peninsula. The area’s well-known spots – like the Hoh Rainforest , one of the largest temperate rainforests in the country – tend to overshadow lesser-known attractions. Along the Elwha River , for example, recent dam removal projects have transformed swaths of the riverbank. The forest is reclaiming areas where concrete structures once stood, and salmon now nest in new channels carved by the river.

Local resident and biologist Carolyn Wilcox leads groups of adventurers into the park and along the Elwha for her ecotourism company Experience Olympic .

“The Elwha has regional fame due to the amazing restoration and comeback of fish and ecosystem services,” Wilcox said. But, she added, “first-time visitors don't hear much about it.”

2) Wine Country: Tour vineyards adapting to a warming planet

Washington state is the second-largest wine producer in the U.S., behind California. Many vineyards are adapting their farming practices to make grape crops more resilient in the face of a changing climate.

At Two Mountain Winery in the town of Zillah, east of the Cascade Mountains, vineyard manager and co-owner Patrick Rawn is one of a handful of Washington growers with a new sustainability certification from the state agency that oversees this industry. One of Rawn’s latest experiments involves allowing mustard grasses to grow under his grape vines.

In the past, he told KUOW, he’d mow down these grasses, but he hopes that by letting them flourish, they’ll keep pests away from his grape buds. The grasses might also keep the roots of his vines cooler, to protect against extreme temperature swings. Last summer’s record-breaking heatwave stunted Rawn’s harvest by 20%, he said.

3) Northwest Washington: See how a local tribe helps manage a young state park

At different points in its history, the Kukutali Preserve was slated to become a summer resort and even a nuclear power plant. But those plans didn’t come to pass. Instead a unique partnership now safeguards the area for conservation and public use. It opened to visitors as one of the state’s newest parks in 2014.

Located on the Swinomish reservation, Kukutali Preserve is technically part of Deception Pass State Park . According to the Swinomish Tribe, it’s the first park in the country to be co-owned and managed by a federally recognized Indian tribe and a state government. The park’s logo depicts a traditional hand tool (a cattail mat creaser, used by tribal members to make cattail mats for temporary shelter or bedding) adorned with a two-headed bird, representing the partnership between the state parks department and the tribe.

Visitors can walk the preserve’s two miles of trails and explore its southern beaches -- just be aware that the trail connecting Fidalgo Island with the main part of the preserve on Kiket Island is underwater at high tide.

4) Cascade Mountains: Search for real-life Pokémon on a mountainside

The American Pika, sometimes likened to Pokémon's Pikachu, is a furry member of the rabbit family that’s about the size of a baked potato. They rely on cold temperatures, snowpack and meadows of fresh flowers – and they’re extremely vulnerable to climate change.

For the last few years scientists have encouraged people in Washington state to document pika encounters. Local pika researchers say citizen scientists are actually providing most of the data on pikas in the wild. But they still need help. The state wants a clearer picture on where exactly pikas live and how many are out there, according to Taylor Cotten with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. With more data on pikas, scientists can better determine how they’re faring with rising temperatures and shrinking snow fields. Despite the rugged habitat, hikers cross paths with pikas regularly and may not realize it.

One of the best-known habitats for pikas is the Goat Rocks Wilderness , a popular hiking destination in the Cascade Mountains, south of Mount Rainier. Hikers can play citizen scientist on their next outing by listening and looking for pika, then documenting it in an app used by wildlife researchers .

5) Seattle: Unlock the secrets of the mysterious Miller Seed Vault

Seattle is home to the largest seed collection in the Pacific Northwest: the Miller Seed Vault . It’s tucked away in a small building, surrounded by public gardens , on the edge of University of Washington campus. The vault holds seeds from more than 100 species of rare native plants from across the state. The seeds are used for research and restoration work.

“It’s kind of a Noah’s Ark,” says Wendy Gibble, who manages the Washington Rare Plant Care and Conservation program this vault is a part of.

Stepping inside the vault is like walking into a restaurant freezer – it’s cold and clean, and there’s a constant hum of the climate control system that protects the seeds from the world outside. You might see volunteers hunching over a desk, where they clean, count and sort seeds. They set aside half of the seed samples to send to the National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation in Fort Collins, Colorado, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the largest seed bank in the country.

6) North Bend: Visit the source of Seattle’s drinking water

The Cedar River Watershed has been the largest source of drinking water for the greater Seattle region since 1901. Today, 1.5 million people rely on the area for water to drink, eat, cook and bathe. The watershed is located about 35 miles east of the city. It covers a little over 90,000 acres and includes the popular Rattlesnake Lake Recreation area.

A watershed education center opened in 2001 to teach visitors about where their fresh water comes from. Near the center is an elevated viewing area that offers a sweeping vantage of the surrounding forest. Most of the vast swath of forest that makes up the watershed area is off-limits to the general public. (The city of Seattle, which owns and manages the area, does this to keep the drinking water supply clean and safe.) Treaty rights allow the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe special access to most of the watershed land. Members of the tribe can hunt, gather berries, and practice other cultural traditions on the property.

7) Issaquah: Hang out with growing salmon, some of this town’s most famous residents

Salmon are an important part of culture and nature in Washington state. But humans have polluted and destroyed much of their watery habitats. The Issaquah Salmon Hatchery , just a half-hour drive from downtown Seattle, is one of many hatcheries in the state that aim to boost local salmon populations.

Though there’s debate among scientists and conservationists about hatcheries, the facility in Issaquah is home to 5 million fish (mostly Chinook and coho salmon) for much of the year, and it draws thousands of visitors to this suburban downtown. The fish live in a series of inground-concrete pools on the property. In the spring, the hatchery releases its larger salmon into Issaquah Creek, which runs through the property. If they survive in the wild, they’ll return to the creek in a few years to spawn.

Fall is the busy season – there’s lots of fish activity on the property, and there’s even a salmon festival here in October – but the hatchery is open all year too. Visitors can learn about the delicate lifecycle of salmon and explore the gardens and art exhibits on the hatchery grounds.

8) Various Locations: Hit the trails with the Disabled Hikers Guide

Syren Nagakyrie is an avid hiker. They also have multiple disabilities and chronic illnesses, and they say they’ve felt excluded from outdoor recreation for much of their life. So, in 2018, Nagakyrie set out to document trails and natural attractions they say are truly accessible for people with a variety of conditions -- physical, psychological, developmental, intellectual. Nagakyrie founded Disabled Hikers , a nonprofit organization and guide that highlights dozens of accessible trails across the Pacific Northwest , California and even parts of the Midwest .

“The entire length of the trail, I need to know: the surface and how wide the trail is, if there’s any sharp drop-offs, the elevation, the grade, the cross-slope,” Nagakyrie said, ticking through the typical list of things to consider. “Will there be any confusing intersections or where I may need to navigate something? Will there be benches along the way?”

Nagakyrie’s ratings also include clear directions for getting to a trail, amenities available at the trailhead, and whether visitors will have to navigate breaks in the trail, too. They said that this information is rarely found online, yet they and many other hikers with disabilities require it to pre-plan hiking trips.

Should You Try 'Dupe Travel' For Your Next Trip? Experts Have Thoughts.

From “hush trips” to “slow travel,” there’s no shortage of new travel trends and terminology these days.

But one that has taken particular hold on social media and IRL is the concept of “dupe travel” or “travel dupes.” Indeed, Instagram and TikTok are flooded with inspiration and information about this increasingly popular approach to choosing a destination.

But what exactly is a dupe travel, and how does it work? Below, experts break down the benefits and downsides of this trend.

What are travel dupes?

“Travel dupes are a current trend where folks are seeking out cheaper, less-crowded alternatives to popular destinations, but where they can still enjoy many of the same attractions or cultural activities,” said Eric Rosen , the director of travel content at the website The Points Guy.

In recent years, we’ve seen airfare, hotel rates and other travel expenses increase significantly , so it’s only natural people would pursue more cost-effective options that allow them to get a taste of the wanderlust magic that’s all over Instagram and TikTok without breaking the bank.

“I define [a travel dupe] as a location with a similar aesthetic look to a famous city or tourist attraction,” said Gabby Beckford , the founder of travel site Packs Light. “Like visiting the Philippines for stunning Southeast Asian beaches instead of Thailand or the beaches of Turkiye instead of Greece.”

The idea is to avoid overpriced hot spots and discover destinations that offer similar vibes without the massive crowds and high prices. Think Slovenia instead of Italy, Quebec City instead of Geneva or Liverpool instead of London.

“Some examples are going to Portugal instead of Italy, Antwerp instead of Paris, or a slightly different variation is going to smaller, lesser-known islands in Greece instead of Santorini or Mykonos,” said Wendy Diep, the co-founder of group travel app Let’s Jetty .

She noted that millennial and Gen Z travelers tend to be more flexible when it comes to travel, which helps them pursue their goal of exploring new places while saving money.

“They’re not necessarily saying ‘Hey, I really have to go to X, Y, and Z,’ but rather looking to sightsee while experiencing local culture,” Diep said. “And they aim to visit places that are off the beaten path, so it’s also part of the appeal.”

What are the benefits of this kind of travel?

“There are multiple benefits to dupe travel,” Diep noted. “One of the biggest is obviously cost savings. You can save money on accommodations and airfare, particularly since prices at hot spots are usually set at premiums because of demand.”

“And even more, when you visit destinations where the costs of living might be lower, or things aren’t marked up because of heavy tourism, you’re able to stretch your money further, which allows you to do more, or even have luxe experiences you wouldn’t necessarily be able to afford everywhere,” she added.

Diep also touted the ability to have a more authentic travel experience and get a real feel for the place when you choose a less touristy destination.

“Among the benefits of dupe travel are discovering exciting, under-the-radar destinations that you might not have considered otherwise ― Albania for its beaches, forest-covered mountains and fabulous wines instead of the French or Italian rivieras, or the sleepy beaches of 30A along Florida’s Gulf Coast instead of the crowded club touristy shores of Miami Beach ― all while saving money compared to more well-known hot spots,” Rosen said.

In this day and age, social media is filled with travelers sharing new destination ideas and money-saving travel hacks, so you don’t even have to put in too much effort to get creative and savvy with your next vacation.

Connor Smith, vice president of masterbrand strategy at IHG Hotels & Resorts noted that the #dupe hashtag on TikTok has more than 6.5 billion views, reflecting the wealth of information available to travelers and consumers looking to avoid the sticker shock of shopping and vacationing in recent years. He recommended checking out Krakow instead of Rome, Chattanooga instead of Asheville, Belfast instead of London and Memphis instead of Nashville.

“These alternative destinations tend to be more budget-friendly, so your travel budget can stretch further in terms of accommodation, dining and activities,” he explained. “Dupe travel also encourages travelers to push their boundaries and explore new destinations and cultures that they might not have considered otherwise. Going off the beaten path can offer a more immersive cultural experience, as these destinations may have more opportunities to connect with locals.”

What are the downsides?

“Because they might be less popular, dupe destinations might not offer as many transportation options, including flights, trains or easily available rental cars as bigger cities,” Rosen said.

And although you can find great social media posts about pretty much any destination these days, you will likely have to do a bit more digging to find reliable, up-to-date information on places to stay and things to do.

“Finally, once these destinations do start to permeate the consciousness of avid travelers, there’s always a danger that they can become as overrun as the places to which they were providing alternatives ― without the well-established tourism infrastructure to handle the swelling crowds,” Rosen added.

Keep in mind that no two destinations are exactly alike, either.

“Tourists should be realistic that it won’t be a true replacement,” Beckford said. “There’s no way to replace a country’s culture, language, experiences, or even ambience.”

Be honest about your vacation goals and whether you’re gravitating toward a popular destination for specific cultural elements or if you’re just looking for a pretty beach and nice sunset. Dupe travel should really be about travel alternatives, rather than replacements.

“Before you book one of these trips, be sure to ask yourself: What is my priority?” said Adam Duckworth , the president and founder of the travel agency Travelmation. “If you want to see the Eiffel Tower, then you have to go to Paris. If you want to cruise the Venice canals, there truly is no alternative. These smaller cities may also have much less to do.”

If you’re avoiding Paris due to costs, he recommended going during the off-season instead.

Erick Prince , a travel blogger and founder of travel site Minority Nomad, believes the travel dupe movement implicitly casts a negative light on the “dupes” in question.

“It’s relegating alternative gems to second-class status, as if they’re merely backup plans instead of destinations worthy of their own spotlights,” he said. “Instead of celebrating them for the wonders they are, they’re relegated to the role of understudies.”

He emphasized that popular destinations are popular for real reasons, whether it’s the amazing street food of Bangkok, breathtaking sunsets in Istanbul or incomparable energy of Carnival in Rio.

“It’s downright unfair, and frankly, a bit disingenuous, to pit places like Chiang Mai, Izmir, or Salvador against these heavyweights as if they’re contestants in some sort of travel showdown,” Prince said. “Each of these destinations has its own unique allures, their own stories to tell, and their own merits for exploration.”

Although the dupe destination trend doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, he challenged travelers to reframe the way they see these alternatives.

“At the end of the day, travel should be about bringing people together, not drawing lines in the sand,” Prince said. “It’s about embracing the rich tapestry of cultures and experiences that this world has to offer, not picking winners and losers. So let’s ditch the exclusionary mindset and open our arms to the diversity of this beautiful planet we call home.”

No Eclipse Plans? Try These Last-Minute Strategies.

On April 8, parts of 13 U.S. states, Mexico and Canada will plunge into midday darkness. Miss this spectacle and you’ll have to wait till 2044 for the next one so close to home.

On April 8, a total solar eclipse will blot out the sun for roughly 4,200 miles stretching from Mexico to Canada — a cosmic show that so much of North America won’t see again for about 20 years. Many made their plans to view it well in advance.

And then there are the procrastinators, who just realized they’re about to miss out. If that’s you, you’ve still got options, but not as many.

“At this point, your goal is just to get to the path of totality and see the eclipse for the longest possible time,” said Melanie Fish, the head of global public relations for Expedia Group Brands . “You’re not trying to find the best party. You’re not trying to make it into your dream vacation. You just want to get to the path of totality.”

So first, get your hands on some eclipse glasses so you can safely watch . Then find a way to get yourself into the path of totality, the strip running across 13 states where the moon will fully eclipse the sun. You’ll be competing with people who have already spiked the demand for flights and accommodations, so be ready to pay more.

And take off the next day, too, if you can. Otherwise, you may spend hours caught in traffic, as many discovered after the 2017 eclipse .

Here are four strategies for a last-minute foray into the total-eclipse zone.

The Path of the Eclipse

On April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross North America from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada. Viewers outside the path of the total eclipse will see a partial eclipse, if the sky is clear .

Drive toward the darkness

If you have access to wheels and live within a few hours of the path of the total eclipse, you can always jump in the car. You might even find relatively inexpensive accommodations just outside the zone, and then drive in from there.

But if you’re hoping to rent a car, you might have some trouble.

The rental car company Hertz reported a 3,000 percent increase in advanced bookings for car rentals in cities along the eclipse path compared with the previous year. The highest demand so far has come in places like Dallas and Austin, Texas, as well as Cleveland and Indianapolis.

If you want to try anyway, book your car as soon as possible and focus your search for rental agencies outside of high-volume areas like airports, advised Isabella Sawyer, a Hertz spokeswoman. Neighborhood locations, she said, may have better availability.

Whether you rent or own your ride, be prepared for gridlock. “People arrive at different times, but everybody leaves at the same time — and that’s the problem,” said Aixa Diaz, an AAA spokeswoman. “Let’s say you have about five million people looking at an eclipse, and everybody leaves at the same time . That’s like the equivalent of 71 sold-out football games all getting out at the same time.”

Taking off the extra day could help you avoid traffic. Data from the 2017 total eclipse, which also took place on a Monday, showed about 41 percent less traffic leaving destinations on Tuesday, compared with Monday, Ms. Diaz said.

Fly into the zone

You could also book a last-minute flight to a city in the path of the total eclipse, preferably one where you won’t need a car. Searches for flights along the eclipse path have quadrupled compared with the same time last year, said Katy Nastro, a spokeswoman at Going.com .

“What is unique about this event is that people are not bound to fly to just one place to be able to experience the eclipse,” she said, “which means they can look at multiple cities in the path, or even cities near the path,” and then, provided you can find a rental car in your destination, drive into the path.

“For example, you could fly into and stay in Toronto, then drive to the border to view the eclipse from the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, just a two-and-a-half-hour drive away,” Ms. Nastro said. (As of Wednesday, Toronto’s main airport still had rental cars available, starting at about $40 a day.)

Go where the hotels are

The path of totality crosses not only small towns but also plenty of hotel-rich urban areas stretching from Texas through the Midwest and upstate New York — places like Dallas-Fort Worth, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo and Rochester, N.Y., and Montreal.

But even in cities with more available rooms, you’ll still most likely have to pay a premium.

“I saw a two-star apartment hotel in Nashville going for $900 all in,” Ms. Fish said of one of the accommodations she found (Nashville is a couple of hours’ drive outside the total-eclipse path), “and a Super 8 in Indianapolis going for $500 the night of the eclipse. So if you’re booking last minute to go see the eclipse, yeah, you are going to pay more.”

Packaging a flight and accommodations on a travel booking app could help save money, as well as headaches, Ms. Fish said. But don’t forget that you may need some sort of ground transportation, so look for packages that include it.

If you’re set on traveling to an area where there are fewer hotels, consider a short-term property rental. As of March 20, Airbnb, which has experienced a 1,000 percent surge in searches along the path of the total eclipse , still had about 40 percent of its inventory available in that zone, according to Haven Thorn, an Airbnb spokesman.

Keep an eye on the weather and stay flexible

Clouds are the eclipse chaser’s nemesis. You can pick a place with the highest likelihood of clear skies and check the forecast obsessively, but the weather is fickle. If you’re driving, be prepared to take a detour at the last minute. And when the big moment nears, pull over safely in a park or a parking lot — not on the side of the road — turn off your car and prepare to be dazzled.

Even if you decide not to go anywhere at all, you may still be able to break out those glasses and feel some of the accompanying environmental changes. Many major cities will still see a partial eclipse: 94 percent in Chicago, 90 percent in New York, 82 percent in Atlanta and 49 percent in Los Angeles.

As Ms. Fish of Expedia said, “The party’s in the sky, so all you’ve got to do is look up.”

On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will be visible within parts of North America. If weather is permitting and there aren’t cloudy skies, total visibility will start along Mexico’s Pacific Coast. In the United States, the path of totality, which is the narrow ribbon of places where the full eclipse can be viewed, goes from Texas to Maine. NASA is offering a map that shows the path of totality as well as a timetable of when the eclipse should appear in some of the major locations where it can be viewed.

If you have never experienced a total eclipse but want to do so, it’s not too late to schedule a last-minute trip to enjoy it. After all, we’re not expected to have another total eclipse that’s visible in the U.S. for nearly a decade , and that one will only be visible from the U.S. in the state of Alaska. Beyond that, the next one is in 2044.

This 2024 eclipse will be the first time a total solar eclipse is visible from Ohio in 208 years. Some places booked up for the eclipse months in advance. However, you can still plan a last-minute trip to some cool and sometimes overlooked destinations in the path of totality in Ohio that are just as much fun the most known cities.

One spot to consider is Mansfield, a charming city in the foothills of the Allegheny Plateau of the Appalachian Mountains. Spectrum News 1 reported that the eclipse will start in Mansfield at 1:57 p.m. EST and plunge the city into darkness when it reaches totality at 3:12 p.m. That cover of darkness should last for about 3 minutes, 16 seconds as the moon passes between the sun and Earth. It will conceal the sun from view completely during that time. The overall eclipse should be over at 4:27 p.m.

While thousands of visitors are already expected in this north central Ohio city and its neighboring Richland County villages for the eclipse, there is still some availability, and you’ll find dozens of fun ways to celebrate the eclipse while there. Many local venues have planned events and crafted special menus.

Here are some places in Mansfield where you can view or celebrate the total solar eclipse.

Yoga at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary

If you want to start your celebrations early in the day, the Ohio Bird Sanctuary will kick things off with Total Eclipse Yoga at 8:30 a.m. This class is led by the center’s director and will cost $10 per person.

Luminous Solar Eclipse Gathering at Mankind Murals Inc.

A pop-up art gallery and eclipse viewing party combine in a fun way in downtown Mansfield for this event at the Luminous City studio lot. Hosted by Mankind Murals Inc., the gathering at 88 North Diamond Street will showcase the eclipse-themed artwork of over a dozen local artists. A DJ will be playing fun music. There are planned patio games and selfie stations. A limited number of solar eclipse glasses will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. They’ll also serve beer, wine and signature eclipse-themed craft cocktails with names like the Twilight Eclipse and the Screwball Eclipse.

Eclipse Viewing and More at the Snow Trails Ski Resort

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., you can hit the slopes, relax on the decks or patios, or tailgate at the Snow Trails Ski Resort to view the solar eclipse from this gorgeous resort. There are no overnight accommodations or parking here, so just plan to atten between the scheduled hours. They will have live music at The Snowflake Loft, and their onsite Lucky’s Cafeteria will be serving breakfast and lunch. The price of admission is $25 per car or $50 per larger RVs.

Eclipse Garden Party at the Kingwood Center Gardens

Eclipsed at the Estate is a celebration planned to take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Kingwood Center Gardens. With its 47 acres of formal and woodland gardens, this viewing party will certainly remind you of the beauty of nature on earth and in the skies. A limited amount of certified viewing glasses will be available to guests. Educational activities are planned during the event, too.

Mansfield and Richland County offers dozens of other terrific spots for viewing the eclipse, too. Many are free to the public. Go to the Richland County eclipse viewing page for many of the sites you may want to consider.

If you want to plan a last-minute trip to view and celebrate the eclipse in the Mansfield area of Ohio, it’s a good idea to book hotels and other activities as soon as possible. Keep in mind that some events will sell out, so it’s important to call to confirm your attendance and whether you need a reservation and ticket.

When planning how and when you will attend different festivities, consider that there will likely be extremely heavy traffic on April 8. Rather than planning to leave your viewing location immediately after viewing, it’s a good idea to come early then hang out late. Make a day of it and enjoy yourself for a while to avoid the worst of the traffic jams.

This week’s episode of Subpar offered a change of pace from the usual lineup of Tour players: Ryan Whitney and Paul Bissonnette, also known as Spittin’ Chiclets, were in the house for a lively chat with hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz .

Whitney and Bissonnette have gained a massive following over the last eight years, thanks their hockey podcast, Spittin’ Chiclets, which showcases their outspoken and irreverent opinions. But Bissonnette, a former NHL player and current TNT host, is also a personality in the broader sports world — including golf! — evidenced by his role at the most recent iteration of TNT’s The Match, which featured Rory McIlroy, Rose Zhang, Lexi Thompson and Max Homa .

Bissonnette served as a special contributor from an on-course cart alongside DJ Khaled, so he was privy to an insider’s perspective on how The Match operates. And for future iterations of the made-for-TV format, he and Whitney have some ideas for TNT to consider.

“Have them get buckled beforehand,” Whitney suggested.

“Shout out to Capital One, they spared no expense on putting those on,” Bissonnette said. “They did the night one this year. I think the whole thing was like over 10 in production. So it, it was just a real cool event.

“I think that maybe moving forward, they obviously want pro golfers ’cause the shots are nice, but I don’t think maybe the people would care as much about that as they would maybe hearing like old-school guys sling stories,” he continued. “Like, imagine having, like Wayne, Brett Hall and like a couple other old-timers out there. I would love to do it with Whit against Charles and Wayne Gretzky. I think that that would be a fun foursome.”

“I don’t think the golf world is gonna be tuning into that one,” Whitney replied. “That’s the problem.”

“Here’s the thing though,” Bissonnette countered. “The last one they had the biggest golfer in the world currently, aside from Tiger, the biggest draw, Rory McIlroy. And I think that they got about 650,000 in viewership . So you’re telling me if people are saying Wayne Gretzky is gonna be the next match, but they ain’t gonna get that many people watching?”

“I don’t think it’s Wayne, I think it’s me and you that can bring the viewership down,” Whitney joked.

“But that wasn’t the sell,” Bissonnette replied. ” I said the foursome. We’re coming as a package deal here, baby. C’mon!”

“I would watch, it’d be great,” Knost offered. “And Charles is just, I mean, it’s hilarious. He’s not scared of s—.

“They need you in there, like chirping guys a little bit,” Whitney said. “Get ’em goin’, bust some balls.”

“I would say, turn it even more into a circus,” Bissonnette said. “ Let’s get DJ Khaled back for a three-hole in the midst of it all against Wayne and Charlie.”

Premier Inn guests who faced ‘spider army’ fail to claim good night refund

Couple among those who say they have struggled to redeem on hotel chain’s ‘guarantee’ promising decent sleep

P remier Inn’s adverts say that a good night’s sleep is “guaranteed”, but a couple have claim that any hope of that went out of the window when a “small army” of spiders began marching across the ceiling of their hotel room.

Jonathan Rees, who filmed what he claimed was an “epic gathering” of arachnids, is one of a number of readers who have contacted the Guardian after they attempted to claim on Premier Inn’s “Good Night Guarantee” but failed to get their money back.

Britain’s biggest hotel chain is famous for the promise, which was launched more than 20 years ago and has in the past been promoted with ads featuring the actor and comedian Sir Lenny Henry.

It says: “We’re so confident you’ll have a great night’s sleep that if you don’t, we’ll give you your money back*.”

However, that asterisk is important: it would seem that many people who claim on the guarantee are falling foul of the exclusions contained in the terms and conditions (T&Cs).

It appears one of the main reasons why people have their claims rejected is that they decided to lie there hoping that the alleged problem, be it a noisy extractor fan or drunk people in the corridors, would go away rather than going down to reception to demand it be sorted out.

Premier Inn said all three cases flagged by the Guardian “fall outside the terms of our Good Night Guarantee”. However, it declined to share any data on the pledge – for example, how many people claim on it, or what proportion get their money back.

Rees and his wife, Yunis, who live in Swansea, spent £208 on a two-night stay at a Premier Inn outside Cardiff. He said that “only after settling down on a comfy and perfectly clean pillow” did he notice a cluster of spiders making their way across the ceiling.

“Only the video does it justice,” he said. “My wife has a phobia of spiders, but there was no way to hide this from her. We were given a new, properly cleaned room, but my wife couldn’t sleep for the two-night duration.” In an email to Premier Inn, Rees said it was a “traumatising event to see a small army of spiders crawling across the ceiling”.

A Premier Inn spokesperson said the couple were immediately transferred to a new room after notifying reception of “the issue”, adding: “Guest relations declined a refund on the basis that the problem was reported and resolved immediately, and the guest opted to continue their stay.”

Another customer, Paul Howell (not his real name), had a three-night stay at Premier Inn’s London Euston hotel “at an eye-watering £228 a night”. He said that on arrival the room was very hot, and that the temperature reached 28C, resulting in him sleeping for “around three or four hours a night”.

He attempted to claim on the guarantee but received a reply, saying that particular hotel “does not offer air conditioning as a facility. Therefore, this falls under our exclusions.”

The company told the Guardian: “Our T&Cs do specify that claims are rejected when the complaint arises due to the lack of a facility that we do not offer – for example, when A/C is not provided.” It added that as a goodwill gesture, unconnected to the guarantee, one-third of Howell’s accommodation costs were refunded.

A third customer claimed her night was ruined by a noisy extractor fan. Alison, who declined to give her surname, said she booked a stay at a Premier Inn in Nottingham at a cost of £257 for two nights.

She settled down to sleep but soon realised an extractor was still running somewhere. “It was low-level but loud enough to be irritating. I lay awake feeling upset ... I tried to grab sleep by covering my ears, still hoping it would go.”

She said that next morning she told reception about the annoying noise and her lack of sleep.

Alison was later told that the Premier Inn would not be able to offer a refund. A spokesperson told the Guardian: “This was reported the next morning, while the apparent disruption occurred throughout the night. T&Cs do specify that any internal noise must be reported within a reasonable period of time that allows the team the opportunity to rectify the issue.”

This exclusion relating to internal noise appears to have caused a number of claims to be rejected. Internet forums on websites such as MoneySavingExpert feature a number of alleged cases similar to Alison’s. In a post on Mumsnet in 2022, one person wrote: “They only guarantee a good night’s sleep if you’re willing to report issues to them in the middle of the night.” Another from that year said: “If you are disturbed by internal hotel noise, you have to report it to reception at the exact time during the night if it is ‘safe’ to do so.”

However, in both cases, reader polls on Mumsnet suggested most voters thought these two customers were being “unreasonable”. Premier Inn said it could not comment on these cases without more information.

Premier Inn also said the guarantee did not apply if your sleep was affected by circumstances beyond the company’s “reasonable control”, such as extreme weather, fire alarms going off and “third-party building works”.

The Good Doctor star reacts to shocking exit in final season

The Good Doctor star Noah Galvin has spoken out about his shocking exit from the final season of the ABC show.

The actor, who starred as Dr. Asher Wolke since the fourth season of the medical drama, was killed during the fifth episode of the season in a brutal antisemitic attack.

While reconnecting with Judaism, Dr Wolke was driving a rabbi back to the synagogue when the pair discovered two thugs vandalising the building. A confrontation led to the vandals killing him.

The death shocked The Good Doctor viewers, with Galvin paying tribute to his beloved character in an emotional Instagram post .

"I spent the last four years in Vancouver working away from my fiancée and dog and family. It was hard but these people made it really worth it. I love you @thegooddoctorabc thank you for everything!!" he wrote alongside a selection of pictures on set.

The Good Doctor page penned a sweet message to the actor in the comments, writing: "Always our Asher 💙."

It was confirmed the show would be ending with its seventh season earlier this year, with creator David Shore opening up on the reasoning why in a recent interview.

"We’ve been lucky enough to plan the ending we want to do. This has been a weird year. Only doing 10 episodes is unfortunate. But being able to go out on your own terms is a blessing," he told Collider .

He continued: "I love [Dr. Shaun Murphy]. You want to throw him into any situation and see what he has to say about the rest of us. We always talk about that. When you live with the character as we’ve had, it does make you a better person. I hope so."

The Good Doctor airs on ABC in the US, and on Sky Witness and NOW in the UK.

If you don't like Mondays, this one may especially be grating. It's April Fool's Day , when you should trust no one and question everything.

The roots of April Fools' Day may date back before to before the 15th century. But the modern-day April Fools' Day has become a day to prank a friend, family member, co-worker − or your customers.

Even though some companies have had April Fools' pranks backfire , marketers continue to issue spoof products in attempts to get some laughs and attention.

Already ahead of April Fools' Day, 7-Eleven has hinted at a possible prank product: In addition to new Lemon Lime, Green Apple and Sweet Orange flavored 7-Select sparkling waters, out now with partner Miracle Seltzer, there's a fourth flavor coming April 1: Big Bite Hot Dog.

The hot dog-flavored water "combines the mouthwatering experience of 7-Eleven’s iconic Big Bite Hot Dog into one refreshing beverage – ketchup and mustard included," the convenience chain says in a press release . "Say goodbye to the days of alternating bites of a hot dog with sips of a beverage, now those on the go can swap the bun for bubbles."

Krispy Kreme: A special doughnut deal for April Fools' Day

Will Big Bite Hot Dog sparkling water be sold? Its availability will be announced April 1. However, some reporters were sent a can of the drink. USA TODAY can confirm that it definitely smells like hot dog water and has a smoky aftertaste.

Custom stuffed animal maker Budsies already makes selfie plush dolls with a built-in voice recorder. Its April Fools' spoof: Artificial intelligence-enabled dolls that "come programmed to learn everything about you and to become your new best friend."

A 50-pound Bearabuddy

Sorry to the 3,500 or so who have already signed up to buy Bearaby's Jumbo Benji plush toy, which is four times the size of its regular weighted plush toys and twice as heavy as its heaviest weighted blanket . This isn't actually going to be sold. But it is real and will be making its home in the lobby at The Child Mind Institute in Harlem to welcome children and their families. More weighted plushies are due the day after April Fools' Day, the company says.

A sleeping bag to go bananas over

The Dole Banana Peel Sleeping Bag, conveniently promoted as being available on April Fools' Day only, is made from actual banana fiber and "allows parents to escape into their own cocoon of sensory deprivation."

A full-body cleaning suit

Outrageous clothing company Tipsy Elves has a special product for April Fools' Day: The Mopsie. You don't need paper towels anymore, you can use your body to clean up those messes, with this "innovative, wearable microfiber towel jumpsuit" for "effortlessly soaking up spills and messes with ease." There's also a Baby Mopsie for "hard to reach places."

Korean BBQ deodorant

Kevin's Natural Foods , which has paleo- and keto-certified ready-to-cook and easy-prep entrées, is touting a new line of personal care products inspired by its food dishes including Korean BBQ Deodorant, Cilantro Lime Toothpaste, Lemongrass Basil Shampoo and Tikka Masala Sunscreen.

"These new face, body and hair care essentials will help fans prioritize self-care inside and out," the company says. 

Omaha Steaks' meaty sprays

Omaha Steaks has its own personal care prank product: Meaty Spritz sprays with flavors such as Omaha Fog, Hog Haze, and Cock-a-Doodle-Dew.

Need some less powerful toothpaste? Sweetgreen offered these fanciful personal hygiene products as part of its Sweetgreen After Salad Kit, which is "designed with your pearly whites in mind … offering everything you need to freshen up post-meal."

Dating app Tinder announced a new April Fools' Day hiring quest for a Vice President of Ghost Hunting to help combat "one of dating culture’s most prevalent vices – ghosting," a practice inflicted on 78% of singles already in 2024 (an untrue fact from Tinder).

Patrón's bringing back a beloved liqueur. No kidding.

Patrón patrons get some good news today. The premium tequila maker chose April Fools' Day to announce the return of its Patrón XO Cafe tequila-based coffee liqueur, which was discontinued in 2021. Since production ceased, devotees took to social media and signed a petition asking parent company Bacardi to bring it back.

Made with Patrón Silver tequila and Arabica bean coffee – the dry liqueur can be sipped straight, in cocktails and as dessert topping – Patrón XO Cafe will begin arriving in stores again later this month.

New merch from Dunkin', bonus points in app

Dunkin' announced it is going back to its roots and rebranding to just "Donuts'" on Monday, April 1. To celebrate the rebrand, the company is selling "Donuts'" merch, including sweatshirts that read "DONUTS," on ShopDunkin.com .

Additionally, Dunkin' Rewards members will receive 3x bonus points on any donut order through the mobile app on April 1.

Urban Outfitters launches 'Name Three Shirts' movement

Urban Outfitters said it is launching a global movement to "stand in solidarity against band-tee-shaming" by launching a new collection called "Name Three Shirts."

The t-shirt line "playfully mocks the gatekeeping attitudes of older generations who insist that band-shirt wearers should be required to name songs by those artists," the company said in a news release.

The line, which features revamped logos from bands such as The Grateful Dead, Joy Division and Led Zeppelin, is a "playful jab at the attitudes of older generations, and fights back against the misogynistic undertones of the infamous ‘name three songs’ line of questioning," Urban Outfitters said in the news release.

The collection of shirts is available online and in select Urban Outfitters stores starting April 1. You can shop the collection online here .

Auntie Anne's, Frontier Airlines collaborate on Pretzel Plane

Auntie Anne's pretzels and Frontier Airlines announced they have collaborated on the newest addition to Frontier's fleet: the Pretzel Plane.

According to a news release, the plane includes new in-flight entertainment featuring Auntie Anne's pretzels rolled seat-side, the "luxurious" smell of hot, fresh pretzels throughout the cabin and airplane-shaped pretzels if you're feeling hungry.

Moe's Southwest Grill, Sonic team up to introduce a Queso Slush

Two popular fast food chains announced a collaboration that is sure to be polarizing.

Moe's and Sonic announced a new beverage, the Queso Slush, a queso-flavored slushie. "The frozen goodness of a Sonic Slush meets the delicious flavor of Moe's queso."
