“Travel Man,” Richard Ayoade’s Travel Show for People Who Hate Travel

travel man original host

By Sarah Larson

A still from Travel Man 48 Hours In...

There are many kinds of travel shows—just as there are many kinds of travellers—and many ways in which they can intrigue or repel us. This summer, I watched quite a few, as I was taking an uncharacteristically ambitious trip and wanted a sense of what I was in for. I set my DVR to auto-record shows about Copenhagen, the Faroe Islands, Tuscany, and France, and then marvelled at the breadth of its harvest. There was “ The Wine Show ,” in which the actors Matthew Goode and Matthew Rhys bopped around Tuscany, sampling vintages and rolling a wine barrel up a hill; the peppily question-and-answer-filled “ Curious Traveler ,” with Christine van Blokland, punctuated with “Huh?” and “Ah!” sound effects; “ Parts Unknown ,” Anthony Bourdain ’s singular cultural reconnaissance via food; and the ubiquitous Rick Steves , bringing his bountiful tips and deflatingly Stevesian sensibility to every corner of Europe. All of this was informative but alienating: these travellers were nothing like me, and I wouldn’t travel like them. It was hard to imagine myself in their shoes. Then I discovered “Travel Man.”

“ Travel Man: 48 Hours in . . . ” is a British series in which the comedian, writer, actor, and director Richard Ayoade spends forty-eight hours in a city, accompanied by various friends—“some of the most available and affordable names in light ent,” as he puts it—and tells us about what to do there. “Mini-breaks are a swirling nebula of nonsense!” he says at the top of “ Copenhagen ,” during a brisk montage of him in Venice, Copenhagen, Vienna, and Moscow. “How can anyone go somewhere new and be expected to enjoy themselves without a decade to decompress?” Exactly , I thought. This is the show for me. Ayoade is perhaps best known from the beloved British sitcom “ The IT Crowd ,” in which he and Chris O’Dowd co-starred as I.T. guys, and for his films “ Submarine ” (2010) and “ The Double ” (2013), which he wrote and directed. “Travel Man” began in 2015, as a spinoff of a show called “ Gadget Man ,” which Ayoade had taken over, as host, from Stephen Fry . He’s far more ubiquitous in the U.K. than he is in the States, but he seems due for an American embiggening .

On “Travel Man,” Ayoade is fun to look at (snappy suits, thick-framed glasses, expression of amused diffidence) and fun to listen to. (Of a monastery turned hotel in Naples, he says, “As well as modish guff, like a rooftop pool and a spa, it retains attractive old shiz, like staircases dug into the hillside.”) His persona is warmly amused, broadly skeptical, and gently astringent—i.e., British. He’s not a joiner. His intros conclude with him saying, in that episode’s particular city and with that episode’s particular guest, “We’re here, but should we have come?” It’s a refreshing tone for a travel series—somewhere between jumping in with both feet and looking askance at everything on earth, including the notion of fun on a weekend getaway. Where Rick Steves adopts an attitude of agreeable derring-do—in Siena, while wearing a Drago contrada neckerchief at a Drago contrada feast before the inter- contrada horse race, Steves says, “Even if I don’t fully understand what’s happening, the excitement is contagious and the wine is delightful!”—Ayoade does things like approach a toboggan on a snowy Norwegian hillside while muttering, “Generally, anything that requires a helmet, I avoid.” He makes it known that he’s happiest in bookstores, not in pre-vomit scenarios or places where lots of people are screaming, and then dutifully boards a hundred-year-old wooden roller coaster in Tivoli Gardens, looking apprehensive.

“Travel Man” is helpful, too. Ayoade gives practical information up top, such as the city’s population, the annual number of tourists, and historic cultural distinctions—which include, for Copenhagen, “Hans Christian Andersen, Sandi Toksvig , Lego, the pedal bin, and my old adversary, the pH scale.” Little price tags pop up onscreen to indicate how many pounds things cost—flights, hotels, food, handy gear. Whether it’s relevant to you or not, the practical information helps create a vivid impression. Ayoade and his guest tend to stay in hotels that are unusual and fancier than I can afford, but pleasing to vicariously enjoy. “The luxury Belvedere suite offers a well-wide view of Vienna, as well as a display hammock,” Ayoade says, entering his hotel room. “But I have no time for display hammocks!” He bats aside the hammock as he breezes past it. “Unpacking squanders time and is a bourgeois indulgence,” he says, briskly hanging up his clothes rack-cum-duffel bag (“£90 approx”). He sometimes claims the fancier lodgings for himself, part of an amusing recurring tactic of being discourteous to his companion. (His comic rudeness can remind me of Jemaine on “ Flight of the Conchords ,” if Jemaine were not such a dim bulb.) In Vienna, Ayoade has “arranged something bespoke,” outside, for Chris O’Dowd: an Airstream trailer from 1952. (“I know how much you like to be near a major highway,” he says.) In Marrakech, when Stephen Mangan, trying to navigate them out of an alley, says, “My map says that way, but my heart says that way,” Ayoade, beaming, replies, “Let’s go with the map, rather than your rotten heart.”

Having a companion join in, besides providing “the illusion of bonhomie,” as Ayoade says, is a smart way to offset the slightly embarrassing explanatory nature of a travel show—there’s less of a false intimacy between viewer and host. Instead, we see Ayoade and friend in action together, bombing around town via bicycle, funicular, hot rod, tank taxi, horse-drawn carriage, camel, Vespa, or tuk-tuk (“Lisbon’s steep slopin’ need not ruin your scopin’,” he says). The show’s editing of their adventures is energetic, occasionally near-Eisensteinian; it feels efficient and encourages the notion, however accurate, that travel is bracing and jolly. Ayoade and friend combine visiting attractions that we would expect, like the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul (“It calls for a brief pause in glibness”), with the less expected: golfing in Tenerife, a doll hospital in Lisbon , a cave tour in Slovenia. The show’s most famous scene is undoubtedly its hair-raising trip to a Vienna snow-globe museum —I’ll let you discover it for yourself—but that episode features an equally funny scene at the Sigmund Freud Museum, during a conversation involving Darth Vader’s helmet.

“Travel Man” is not necessarily best enjoyed in a binge. (There are nine short seasons and three Christmas specials.) Too much at once can highlight the effort involved in its stars’ banter, and you occasionally worry that Ayoade’s companion won’t be quite as fun as he is, a worry that is sometimes justified. But enjoyed responsibly, the potent, savory series provides what you most seek from a travel show: a sense of a place and an idea of how you might find yourself in it. It combines TV’s particular efficiency in revealing the sights and sounds of a destination with the sense of what an amiable neurotic might experience there. At this point in my year, having long since returned from my adventures in Europe, I am mere months into the decade I’ll need to decompress from even one fjord. Part of that process involves recreational “Travel Man,” where Ayoade adventures so I don’t have to. “This is the sexiest place on the planet,” a Miami skipper tells him proudly, on a boat tour. “People come here to have a good time and let loose and have fun.”

“Sounds like hell,” Ayoade says.

Whatever Happened To Adam Richman?

The following article includes mentions of child abuse and sexual assault.

If you had even the slightest bit of downtime to spare in the years between 2008 and 2012, then chances are you likely enjoyed watching one man's mission to gorge himself on America's largest and greasiest delights via the cultural masterwork of the Travel Channel's " Man vs. Food ." You may have so lost yourself in the monstrous mountains of the show's vast fast food offerings that you also managed to lose sight of the host. So, whatever happened to Adam Richman, anyway? Hopefully you didn't fall foul to the many ludicrous death hoaxes available online about the former "Man vs. Food" host and have remained savvy enough to be at least vaguely, if not actively, aware of his pursuits beyond the food challenges that made his name in the public eye.

"Man vs. Food" was one of the Travel Channel's highest-rated shows, and it remains a huge cultural influence that has arguably helped pave the way for countless other series in which people happily stuff themselves silly with local cuisines — and honestly, we love to see it. But what made Richman want to leave "Man vs. Food" in the first place? And what did he do next after saying so long to the hit show? As it turns out, a heck of a lot.

Here's everything you need to know about what the original "Man vs. Food" host, Adam Richman, has been up to in more recent years.

Adam Richman lost his appetite for Man vs. Food

Though fans were still all too hungry to witness Adam Richman demolish the sort of cartoonish quantities of meat that could have even defeated a human dumpster like Homer Simpson, by January 2012, he announced it was time to hang up his "competitive fork." In a Facebook post that reflected on the 59 eating challenges he bravely digested during the show's original run, the longtime host thanked his fans for their love and support, but confirmed, "I am out of the food challenge game," and was onto new and exciting ventures. He added to his fans, "I now seek to explore, to learn and to share what I've learned about food, places, people and travel itself & make that information enjoyable and accessible to everyone."

In his final season of "Man vs. Food" –- titled "Man vs. Food Nation" –- Richman stepped back from his feasting throne to instead celebrate the locals who made these challenges iconic in the first place. He told The Guardian , "There is nothing like watching a hometown hero being cheered on by his friends in a restaurant that he or she would normally frequent." With that in mind, he added that his decision to leave the show when he did was simply because "the spectacle diminishes over time." Richman explained, "As a producer, if nothing else, I had to be aware of giving my audience something that they wanted to see."

Contrary to the rumor mill, he didn't leave Man vs. Food over health issues

After Adam Richman left the Travel Channel hit, speculation was rife that his decision to abandon the colossal farmyard banquets of "Man vs. Food" was because he worried about what these food challenges were doing to his physical health. However, the former host was quick to shut down such theories in a 2016 interview with  BBC News , in which he bluntly stated that "the rumours about health concerns stopping the show are untrue." Richman added that whilst there was no particular health agenda to his decision to leave, there was regardless a sense of relief to leaving the food challenges behind. "I don't miss the physiological feeling after having a spicy challenge and having that much food in you," he explained.

A year later, Richman divulged to People  (via Yahoo! News ) that he'd lost 60 pounds since tapping out from the extreme eating game . And though he may not have left "Man vs. Food" because of fears that the show was harmful to his health , he did confess that the impact of those food challenges directly affected his self-confidence regarding his physical appearance. "I could see my belly," Richman said. "It was unflattering. It sent me into depression."

Adam Richman was hit with some serious internet backlash

By 2014, Adam Richman appeared to be on top of the world. In addition to enjoying a healthier body, he was also due to premiere his new show, "Man Finds Food," on the Travel Channel. In June of that year, he shared a (since-deleted) celebratory Instagram post showing off his 70-pound weight loss with the caption (via Time ), "Had ordered this suit from a Saville Row tailor over a year ago. Think I'm gonna need to take it in a little." Unfortunately, Richman also included the controversial hashtag, "#thinspiration" — a term with such a loaded history of encouraging unhealthy modes of weight loss and of glorifying emaciated bodies that "thinspo" content had been banned by Instagram in 2012.

Commenters immediately piled in to chastise and correct Richman's error, and the food star didn't exactly respond well to it . As reported by Jezebel , he allegedly lashed out at his critics with a variety of crude and sexist responses, including telling one commenter to die by suicide.  The Guardian noted that his most damaging of remarks were eventually deleted and replaced by (also later deleted) apologetic posts. "I've responded to internet hate recently with vile words directed at those hating me," Richman tweeted. "I am sorry, I should know better & will do better."

Whilst the Travel Channel didn't acknowledge the incident directly to the public, it released a statement shortly after the headline-making scandal, stating its decision to postpone the July 2014 premiere of "Man Finds Food." The show eventually debuted in the U.S. in April 2015.

The Travel Channel host kept reworking a familiar format

Since the end of "Man vs. Food," Adam Richman has continued to host a variety of food-related shows that play on his former fame as America's beloved purveyor of localized food challenges, whilst also pushing forward with new approaches to his overall schtick. In 2012, "Adam Richman's Best Sandwich in America" did exactly what the title suggests, while "Secret Eats with Adam Richman" and "Man Finds Food," both from 2015, explored similar premises of the star uncovering the best kept food secrets — restaurants and dishes — that are hidden away throughout the USA and the world at large. Basically, Richman kept it simple in the years following "Man vs. Food," and by all accounts, it paid off.

Speaking to the Chicago Tribune in 2012, Richman shared that he had no desire to become an "inaccessible, effete food douche," noting that the process for coming up with "Adam Richman's Best Sandwich in America" very much pushed against him ever turning into this type of person — and you can see that same theme within many of his shows since. Richman told the newspaper, "I was talking to my co-(executive producer), one of my best friends, Dan Adler, and said, 'Dude, let's just get back to basics.' People tell me they use 'Man v. Food' for a travel guide. I said, 'Dude, let's just show the best sandwiches in America. Every culture has got a sandwich, every income bracket has a sandwich.' And that's how it was born."

Hey, why mess with success?

Adam Richman discovered new opportunities in Britain

After finishing "Man vs. Food," Adam Richman's well-established love for travel took him over to Britain, where the self-proclaimed " 1/4 English " foodie was seemingly embraced by the country almost immediately. In June 2014, he notoriously posed naked for Cosmopolitan UK with little more than a soccer ball to keep him from going "The Full Monty." But the cheeky "Man vs. Nude" centerfold wasn't just for sex appeal, it was also to help raise awareness for Cancer Research UK.

When Richman wasn't stripping for charity, he was spending a great deal of time finding new ways to do what he does best: celebrating great food. In 2015, he hosted a British competition show called "BBQ Champ" for ITV, and found a comfortable kinship with the country. Explaining to  Foodism why he was proud to host a celebration of U.S. food in the U.K., he said, "If it brings more flavour and more enjoyment to the nation that's given me an unbelievable career boost, second home and increased vitality ... I'm all for it."

Richman also went on to enjoy a variety of appearances on British talk shows, including "This Morning" and "Sunday Brunch," as well as the comedy panel series, "Celebrity Juice." In March 2020, it was announced that Richman would host " Supperman " — a show in which he would talk about, transform, and serve up the favorite meals of a different celebrity each episode — for UKTV network Dave. Sadly, the new show was derailed by the global COVID-19 pandemic and remains in hiatus, as of this writing.

This fan-favorite foodie got super into soccer

Being in Britain also gave Adam Richman time to indulge in another one of his great passions: soccer (better known as football pretty much anywhere outside of the U.S.). He's such a huge fan of the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club that in 2016, he told  BBC News  that he even exchanges texts with Spurs' manager Mauricio Pochettino. But he's also grown from being a fan to being an active beneficiary of the sport, becoming the sponsor of the small Sunday league team,  Broadley FC , in 2016 and giving money to pay towards pitch fees, soccer kits, and club jackets. In 2020, Richman became a shareholder of Grimsby Town FC, sharing in a Twitter  post that the action "means so much as a fan of the game."

Prior to this, Richman took part in Soccer Aid 2014, where he played for the "Rest of the World" team against England, alongside celebrities like Jeremy Renner and Michael Sheen. Richman's team won the match with a score of 4–2, and the annual British charity event raised £6,525,072 for UNICEF . But it also helped Richman get healthy and find confidence, as he told Cosmopolitan , "Taking part in [Soccer Aid] was a big motivation to stay fit. I actually cried when I was asked to take part."

As Richman wrote for Men's Health  back in 2013, the TV foodie played the sport for the love of it, but also to enjoy better health without the tedium, suggesting he did so to "combat the monotony of gym workouts."

Adam Richman mixed his love of soccer with his love of food

It seems only inevitable that Adam Richman would eventually find a way to marry his love for soccer, food, and travel into one delicious format — with a side helping of his love for championing everyday people — and in 2019, he did exactly that. "Matchday Menus" was a Facebook Watch show produced by London football channel COPA 90 , in which Richman traveled across Europe and North America to explore the traditional meals that soccer fans enjoy as an accompaniment to a match.

Each episode was a snappy six to eight minutes long and saw Richman highlighting the "communities that have brought their own flavours to the game," as well as "the origins of stadium food in some of football's most emblematic cities" (via COPA90). The online show featured Richman celebrating such varied culinary endeavors as the fish tacos and tzatziki tailgate traditions of Los Angeles FC, the fish and chips that typically warm up a Morcambe FC match, and the decadent Italian dishes that power the Napoli Champions League. Food and soccer? Truly a match(day) made in heaven.

He now cooks food on TV, instead of eating it

When "Man vs. Food" first debuted in 2008, viewers responded enthusiastically to the fresh format of the show, which saw host Adam Richman going against food programming tradition to celebrate the eating side of meals, rather than the cookery side of it. But as Richman continued to distance himself from the competitive eating that made him a household name in later years, he also began to explore the more technical side of preparing food, too. In 2015, Richman released his first cookbook, "Straight Up Tasty: Meals, Memories, and Mouthfuls From My Travels," which he described to Love Food as being "a non-cookbook cookbook" full of "irreverent but fun stuff." This includes recipes that are inspired by friends and family, as well as personal anecdotes regarding his life and trips around the world.

Richman has also been no stranger to hustling a little TV chef business for himself, having enjoyed various appearances on popular talk shows, whipping up wholesome, home-cooked food. The focus of many of his recipes are on meals that are easy and accessible for anyone to make, such as his mom's cheesy spinach pie recipe , which he shared on the "Today" show in 2019, or his homemade "healthy spin" on prawn alfredo and cheesy breadsticks, as seen on a "Takeout Fakeout" segment of "Good Morning America."

Clearly, Richman's passion for food is a personal one — or, as he told Love Food, "There's a beautiful language spoken between people through food." And this foodie is most at home speaking it.

The Man vs. Food alum started exploring the stories behind mass-made food

Not content with simply eating and cooking food for other people's entertainment, Adam Richman has gone on to explore the origin stories of some of America's most beloved mass-made foods from some of the biggest brands. He delved into these tales for the History Channel in 2021 with his own season of "Modern Marvels," as well as "The Food That Built America."

With "Modern Marvels," Richman did fascinating episodic deep dives into how mass-produced snack foods are made, and told Page Six that the impetus for the show came from how we take "for granted" how many of these culinary treats are created. "We know that, when we pop open that bag of chips, it's going to be crispy and delicious," he said, "but there's a lot of people and a lot of work and a whole lot of modern marvelous technology to make that happen."

Meanwhile, "The Food That Built America" threw Richman into storyteller mode, with the show covering the innovative turning points of popular American companies like McDonalds and Hershey's, as well as major food rivalries — such as Pizza Hut vs. Dominoes — and the culture-changing showdown between major cola brands of the 1970s. Speaking to Mashed , Richman said he wanted to remind the American public about the real lives behind these household names, saying, "We think about brands. We don't think they're people."

Adam Richman started his DJ career

Yes, you read that correctly: Adam Richman is now a legit DJ and has been spinning tunes for the public since 2020. Serving beats instead of food, the multi-talent debuted this new notch in his career belt by DJing at the "unofficial" closing party of the South Beach Food & Wine Festival that February, where he set up shop in the DJ booth of Sweet Liberty and spun "everything from Lizzo to the Beastie Boys," per the Miami New Times .

When the global pandemic hit, Richman continued to DJ from home and streamed live sets for fans on Instagram. A post from April 2020 had Richman promising that he'd be "spinning gossamer webs of eargasms, and dropping bangers" throughout "most evenings," with some fans commenting that his live sets were a light in the dark of lockdown. "I really do need to say thanks," one person  wrote . "These have been a great way for me to break up the day and just chill for a bit."

This wasn't a new development, however. As early as 2011, Richman was publicly pouring his love for music into a guest-DJ set for KCRW , where he chose tracks from artists like Drive-By Truckers and Sam Cooke. In the accompanying interview with the Los Angeles-based radio station, Richman hinted at the beginnings of his musical passions whilst talking about U2: "I had played guitar in my youth ... And it wasn't until high school that, obviously, I saw that, well, girls dug musicians. So I wanted to pick my guitar up again."

This foodie returned to his theatre roots

It may not be of college pedigree becoming someone who once attempted to eat the world's biggest burger on television, but Adam Richman has a degree from Yale's drama school. So, he's actually a legit theatre kid. In 2014, the multi-talent returned to his roots to co-produce the Off-Broadway play, "Stalking the Bogeyman." The show was a hit, earning a rave review in The New York Times and receiving an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination , before enjoying subsequent productions in London and Sydney.

Written by journalist David Holthouse and originally broadcast as a story on " This American Life ," Richman explained the play to the  AV Club . "It's the true story of a man stalking and plotting to kill the man who raped him when he was seven," he said. Since becoming involved with the show, Richman has become an advocate for sexual abuse survivors as a spokesman for RAINN.

Speaking to Everything Theatre  in 2016, Richman divulged that the story opened his eyes to "the scope of this awful crime," and shared that he hoped the play would have a positive impact. As well as wanting to raise awareness on the "surprising frequency" of child abuse, he also said, "If any in the audience are affected by this tragedy, and have been silent and carried this painful burden for a long time, I hope it gives them courage to speak out and speak up."

If you or someone you know may be the victim of child abuse, please contact the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-4-A-Child (1-800-422-4453) or contact their live chat services .

If you or anyone you know has been a victim of sexual assault, help is available. Visit the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network website or contact RAINN's National Helpline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673).

He formed a partnership with Alamos Wines

Further elevating Adam Richman's profile beyond being "that dude with the insane bottomless gut" was his partnership with Alamos Wines in 2015, which he once described to the  AV Club as being one of the most interesting opportunities he'd encountered in his career, admitting that people "might not necessarily anticipate" that "the dude from 'Man vs. Food' is doing pairings for fine wine." The company brought Richman out to Argentina to understand and oversee the basics of their wine production. "It was really amazing," he told the website. "They actually flew me to Mendoza to let me learn the viticulture and walk around the vines, learn about it down to the calcium table, the water content, the runoff."

As part of the "Dare to Pair" contest, Richman and Alamos Wines encouraged consumers to come up with their best wine and meal pairings, with the winner enjoying a trip to New York City and dinner with the "Man vs. Food" star. Whilst attending The Daily Meal 's kitchen for the event, Richman himself curated a set of meals with which to be paired with specific wines as part of the contest. Reminding guests at the event that you don't always have to splash out to find great taste, he said, "I really like that idea of 'you don't have to spend a lot to get a lot'" — confirming that he is indeed a man after our own hearts.

Adam Richman's net worth proves he's come a long way

If all of this chatter about what happened to the former "Man vs. Food" star has still left you scratching your head and wondering, "Yes, but how much is Adam Richman worth these days?" — then fret not, because as it happens, he's got a net worth as fat as one of the burgers he would have demolished on TV back in the day. According to Celebrity Net Worth , Richman is estimated to be worth a tasty $10 million and was receiving $35,000 an episode during his "Man vs. Food" heyday.

It's no surprise that he's amassed such an impressive fortune when you consider that Richman has maintained a steady flow of work since leaving "Man vs. Food" behind. Between cookbooks, hosting duties, TV appearances, and various product endorsements, this popular foodie has continued to hustle hard throughout his career following his rather humble beginnings in the industry. As Richman mentioned in the introduction for his 2010 book, " America the Edible: A Hungry History, from Sea to Dining Sea ," he was once a "struggling actor" who "supported [him]self" between a handful of bit roles on shows like "Law & Order: Trial by Jury," "Guiding Light," and "Joan of Arcadia" by "working in the restaurant industry."

These days? Adam Richman's flexing like a millionaire, meaning that in this battle of Man vs. Money, man has clearly won.

Joe Lycett and Bill Bailey in Iceland

Travel Man: 96 Hours in Iceland review – farewell Richard Ayoade, hello Joe Lycett

The Birmingham comic is joined by Bill Bailey to eat tomatoes and form a punk band in his debut as the new host of Channel 4’s holiday show. But Ayoade fans may miss his trademark quirks

R ichard Ayoade brings a strange sense of dislocation with him everywhere he goes – as a presenter on The Crystal Maze , a panellist on quizshows and in characters such as Moss in The IT Crowd and Dean Learner and Thornton Reed in Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace. It jibed particularly well with his stint as Channel 4’s eponymous Travel Man, a role from which he has stepped down. His detached oddity added a much-needed freshness to the travelogue format and gave his weekly companion a challenge to which to rise, lending each episode of the nine series he hosted a bit of bite.

This episode welcomes the new presenter, Joe Lycett , with what is effectively a Christmas special. Travel Man: 96 Hours in Iceland follows the usual format, but the participants – Lycett’s companion here is the suitably trollish Bill Bailey – get double the usual 48 hours to sample the delights of their destination.

It is a perfectly enjoyable hour in their company. They journey – partly by husky-drawn sledge – around a country that spreads 200 active volcanoes and a population the size of Coventry’s across nearly 100,000 gorgeously frozen square kilometres. They visit geothermally heated waters, eat in an all-tomato restaurant (within an enormous greenhouse that produces one-fifth of Iceland’s annual fruit production), watch the aurora borealis from a transparent hotel pod and jam as “Rancid Minibreak” in the sound booth of the Icelandic Punk Museum, which is housed in a repurposed public toilet.

They travel to Dimmuborgir, where the earth is said to meet the underworld, and to the Cave of the Yule Lads. These are 13 mischievous figures (with names such as Sausage Swiper, Door Slammer and Spoon Licker) of seasonal folklore. They put toys in the shoes of good children on Christmas Eve and leave potatoes in those of the others. They are – at least for the purposes of cameras and/or December – embodied by 13 men who seem very happy making believe in their rustic-elf costumes. Lycett looks discomfited by it all. Bailey looks as if he has come home.

It is a busy but essentially soothing 96 hours. As ever, the sights are captioned with salient facts and labelled with prices, giving us the total cost of the trip at the end of the show, in case we wish to get off our bums and – pandemic permitting – emulate it.

Lycett is a perfectly good presenter and Bailey a perfectly good guest. They alternate as foil and comedian while felting miniature troll-Baileys, boiling eggs on the ends of fishing lines dropped into thermal vents (“That’s what I got into showbiz for”) and gazing up at Guðjón Samúelsson ’s extraordinary concrete church, Hallgrímskirkja, which towers over Reykjavik.

There are moments when the pair stray into strained banter territory, but there is also plenty of good, easy stuff. Emerging from a tiny earthquake simulator in a shopping centre after an underwhelming seismic simulation, Lycett says thoughtfully: “I would say, in a shopping centre, this would be a space a Timpson could take.” As they fly in a tiny plane along Iceland’s longest fjord, Lycett notes that he is hoping to see a whale, but there appear to be none. “They’re famously very hard to book,” Bailey says, with the air of a father eager not to assuage a child’s disappointment. There is profound, visceral truth in Lycett’s comment that the stark, brutal Sun Voyager sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason, overlooking the glittering sea, looks like one of the Loose Women.

This is all fine – and may improve further with different guests bringing different energies to proceedings. Lycett is a sufficiently flexible and generous performer to embrace them. But if you were an Ayoade fan, you will miss his quirks, eccentricity and scalpel-sharp wit. The new version does not have the snap and crackle of the original. The change occasioned in me the kind of mild sorrow that discovering your favourite cafe has been take over by Starbucks might. We will all survive, obviously. Life will go on. But just a bit – a very little bit – flatter than before.

Mawaan Rizwan and Joe Lycett wearing Dry Robes in Dublin for Channel 4 series Travel Man

Since 2015, there’s been no need to go on a minibreak to a cultural European destination. Richard Ayoade and Joe Lycett have gone for us. They’ve waited at airport security lines displaying their miniature toothpaste tube in a clear plastic bag. They’ve bought mystery crisps from railway vending machines. They’ve been to the museums, tried the local delicacies and gone on the sightseeing tours, so that we could stay luxuriously put.

Indeed, for a good chunk of 2020, staying put was the only option, which is when Travel Man: 48 Hours In… really came into its own. During lockdown, you could spin the globe, choose a location, load up All4 (as it was then known), and have a packed weekend there from the comfort of your sofa. All the experience of short haul travel with none of the having-to-mime-migraine-symptoms-to-a-Hungarian-pharmacist. Bliss!

Now Travel Man: 48 Hours In… is back with four new Joe Lycett-fronted episodes starting on Friday March 22 at 8.30 p.m. on Channel 4 and Channel 4.com. Joe’s guests this time around are comedians Alan Davies, Desiree Burch, Adam Buxton and Jessica Fostekew. While Davies, Burch and Fostekew are all Travel Man first-timers, this is a repeat visit for Adam Buxton, who also went with Richard Ayoade to Lisbon back in 2016.

Respectively, the new travel guests are being taken to Italy’s Trieste, Finland’s Rovaniemi, Czechia’s Prague, and the Canary Island of Lanzarote. Expect a visit to the wind museum, scenes of eating sausages out of skulls, volcanic wine and some sleigh-riding (not necessarily in that order).

To celebrate the show’s return, let’s salute some of its most entertaining trips from previous series.

10. Hamburg with Bob Mortimer

Adding “…with Bob Mortimer ” to anything makes it better. (Try it. The One Show… With Bob Mortimer. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire… With Bob Mortimer. Year 10 Parents’ Evening… With Bob Mortimer.) That’s definitely the case on this 48-hour stint in Hamburg, the high point of which has to be the visit to the German Food Additives Museum. It starts off niche, and just gets more niche from there as Mortimer encourages Ayoade to ingest out-of-date E numbers. A solid best-of list entry.

9. Amsterdam with Joe Lycett

Here’s the point at which Travel Man ’s producers must have scribbled down the note ‘ Joe Lycett – new host if Richard leaves?’ The two have more in common than you may think – they’re both sardonic clothes horses who run on irony – but while Ayoade’s persona leaves little room to express genuine delight, Lycett is a joy machine. We see it here when he’s confronted by a Dutch street organ that plays Wham. Immediately, he starts to jig, hands held aloft screaming “I feel so alive!”, while Ayoade nods along barely perceptibly. A strong audition for the main part.

8. Moscow with Greg Davies

Worthy of celebration solely for the local outfit Greg Davies wears at the traditional steam bath: a kind of toga worn with – as the Taskmaster describes it – a hat that makes him look like a sinister children’s character. Add to the outfit the ‘being whipped by two men using birch branches’ treatment that Davies volunteers to undergo, and we are entertained. See also: space food.

7. Split with Aisling Bea

This is Aisling Bea’s second time as a guest on the show and both are good fun, but this pips the other because it features what is officially the most adorable Travel Man sequence of all time: Bea and Joe Lycett walking extremely sweet rescue dogs from a local animal shelter along a dedicated dog beach. As Lycett puts it, “it’s the cutest day I’ve ever had and that’s saying a lot.” If a tiny puppy stand-up paddle-boarding doesn’t do it for you, then there’s also strudel-rolling, a fish cookery class, and a museum of frog taxidermy that genuinely makes you worry for humanity. Clearly mates who get on, these two are great company.

6. Copenhagen with Noel Fielding

The happiest Goth on Earth in the happiest place on Earth? That’s what you get with Noel Fielding in the Danish capital. The Mighty Boosh star giggles his way through open sandwiches, bakery windows, a beer museum and a tiny rollercoaster. They both love the fairground, and both appear to provoke genuine antipathy from their cycling tour leader Mike the Bike (he doesn’t like trouble), who makes every effort to ditch them mid-tour. The chemistry is good, the mood is… as relaxed as Richard Ayoade appears to get (key quote from Fielding: “I thought this was going to be a holiday, not one of your weird, anally retentive fright-fests.”) And they’ll always have Galoppen.

5. Berlin with Roisin Conaty

In which: they travel in a jazz lift, very much almost die on the road in what was voted the World’s Worst Car of 1975, improvise a blues jam session, and go to a bowling alley. Not a bowling alley but a kegelbahen, where Richard Ayoade appears to reveal genuine anger and a surprisingly intense competitive streak (plus a serviceable Daniel Day Lewis impersonation) when he refuses to leave until he gets a strike.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

Comedian, writer and actor Roisin Conaty makes an excellent audience for Ayoade’s patter, awkward Kula Shaker jokes, and the break’s Cold War theme in general. He’s great, she’s great, and it just works.

4. Hong Kong with Jon Hamm

An extended-length Christmas special, this is a joy of an hour. Watch as the former star of Mad Men and the former host of The Crystal Maze take a ludicrously short journey in a Rolls Royce, have their portraits ripped out of paper by an artist named “Uncle Man”, and get a foot massage – or, as Ayoade describes it, “an onslaught of unparalleled brutality”. (Squirming and grimacing under the touch of his masseur and telling him to stay the heck away is as aggressive as you’ll see the man). The best bit? When they get measured for dandy bespoke suits with which they are clearly – and rightly – overjoyed.

3. Ibiza with Jessica Knappett

Companionable banter is all very well, but sometimes it’s fun to witness a clash of personalities so extreme you wonder if it’ll end in violence. And that clash isn’t just Ayoade (sardonic, reserved) vs Knappett (wahey-the-lads! ‘BEEFA), but Ayoade vs Ibiza itself. Put simply, the party island/hippy hangout is his nightmare, and this episode features genuine appeals to camera for rescue. From what? From a gong bath, a surfing machine, the hotel where Wham’s Club Tropicana video was filmed, and from a hotel manager who insists on taking them to a place “where membership is a smiling face.” Despite Knappett’s appeals for Ayoade to have an open mind and go with the flow, his mind remains resolutely closed and stressed, and it’s quite a lot of fun to watch.

2. Miami with Rhod Gilbert

There’s no personality clash here. Ayoade and Gilbert are like two complementary grape varieties blended into the same refreshingly dry wine. It’s a wine that you’d think would be too acerbic for Miami’s brand of relaxed Cuban cool, but you’d be wrong. Humidity aside, they both have a great time on the Florida coast. They eat crab meat lollipops that cause Ayoade to break out in a spontaneous smile, and which Gilbert describes as the most amazing meal he’s ever had in his life. They wear crab bibs, are rubbish at beach yoga, nervous of alligators, live it up at a domino game and sip drink thick, sweet coffee and freshly squeezed juice you feel like you can taste. A beautiful combination.

1. Vienna with Chris O’Dowd

The best Travel Man episodes are the ones where chemistry between host and guest really chimes, and here, it’s unimprovable. This trip to Vienna with his The IT Crowd co-star Chris O’Dowd is the happiest Richard Ayoade has ever looked on screen – possibly the happiest he’s ever been in life? Perhaps that’s down to the relief of not having been the one to have accidentally smashed a snow globe in Vienna’s national snow globe museum (O’Dowd is now banned from Austria). Or perhaps he’s just relaxed, having fun and enjoying making his pal laugh over partially fermented grape juice and cheesy sausage. They eat apple strudel, drive hotrods, explore the sewers and ride a Ferris wheel as part of a locations tour for The Third Man , and generally have a lovely, lovely time.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Dublin with Mawaan Rizwan who is cute as a button and really did not enjoy wild swimming.

Milan with Morgana Robinson whose superior pasta-making skills leave Ayoade humiliated.

Iceland with Bill Bailey for boiling eggs in a geyser, the Icelandic punk jam and the hot tub hats.

Stockholm with Sally Phillips for Ayoade’s obvious discomfort and Phillips’ obvious joy at the ABBA museum.

Porto with Nish Kumar for Nish’s excitement about his religious wax buttocks.

Dubrovnik with Stephen Merchant for them going on the Game of Thrones locations tour without having seen Game of Thrones .

Travel Man: 48 Hours In… airs on Fridays at 8.30pm on Channel 4. All episodes are available to stream in the UK on Channel4.com . Series one to seven are available to stream on Plex and Prime Video in the US.

Travel Man viewers surprised over big change to show

"Mummy's gone to Iceland!"

preview for Joe Lycett explains why he stormed off Stephs Packed Lunch

Travel Man has returned for a new season, kicked off by a festive special with new host Joe Lycett.

Taking over from Richard Ayoade — who hosted all seasons of the travel docuseries between 2015 and 2019 — Lycett spent 96 hours in Iceland with "comedy legend and Viking impersonator" Bill Bailey.

In tonight's (December 27) special, Channel 4 viewers got to follow this dynamic duo as they explored Reykjavik, Europe's most northernly capital, and its environs.

travel man joe lycett bill bailey

Despite Lycett being announced as Ayoade's replacement back in 2019 , some Travel Man fans had to take a moment upon realising the series now has a different host. 2019 feels like a lifetime ago, after all.

"Did not know Richard Ayoade wasn't #TravelMan anymore and I am BEREFT," one viewer wrote on Twitter.

"Jo [sic] as travel man aye, a Christmas plot twist," another commented.

"As much as I like Jo [sic] lycett generally, travel man just ain't the same without Richard Ayoade!!!" one person added.

Others, however, were happy with Lycett's stint on Travel Man , leaving the show's deadpan *almost* untouched.

"Joe Lycett is the only person who could take over #travelman from Richard Ayoade and it feel like absolutely nothing has changed. Great choice of replacement," one fan wrote.

In the episode, Lycett and Bailey bonded in between an entirely tomato-based three-course meal in a greenhouse and a night in a bubble hotel to catch a glimpse of the northern lights.

Their four-day Icelandic getaway continued with eggs boiled in a hot spring, paired with buttered brown bread that’s been cooking underground for 18 hours.

"The bleakest breakfast outside of Wetherspoon’s," Joe said, before his bread got swept away by Iceland's unforgiving wind.

Later on, the pair visited the Icelandic Punk Museum, located in repurposed bathroom stalls, where they gifted viewers a wannabe riotous performance, and immediately promised to repay any damages.

Lycett and Bailey also tried their hand at a felt troll-making workshop and an adorable husky sledding session, before chilling in a hot tub with a Christmas beer promptly dubbed "liquid tinsel". It doesn't get any more festive (and chilly) than this.

Having conquered the world of technology in Gadget Man, acclaimed Director, Author and BAFTA-winning actor Richard Ayoade deserves a break. But there’s a problem; he hates going on holiday. For Richard, travel is boring and stressful and takes far too long. Surely there must be a way to make it more fun, more efficient, and less tedious? ‘Travel Man’ is Richard’s chance to show us where we’re going wrong by having the most culturally efficient holiday possible, with all the boring bits taken out.

2. Istanbul

Richard and Adam Hills charter a yacht to cross the Bosphurus into Asia but decide they prefer the ferry back. They dine out on raki and tripe soup, which they decide is perhaps a little ‘too Turkish’. Adam tries his hand at bartering when he buys a carpet in the grand bazaar and Richard subjects himself to a traditional Turkish shave with a cut throat razor.

Despite the cold and the lack of daylight, Iceland is a popular destination in the winter but can Richard see the appeal? Jessica and Richard use a helicopter to cram 10 hours of sightseeing into 3 before dining out on rotten shark. Suitably refreshed they set out to go whale watching, see the Northern Lights and cast a clinical eye over the famous Blue Lagoon spa.

4. Marrakech

Richard and Stephen Mangan immerse themselves in the culture of the city as they visit its famous 'horrific smelling' tanneries and try eating sheep’s head. They also attempt to negotiate the desert terrain outside the city by balloon and camel, before explore the Saadian tombs and try their hands at traditional storytelling.

Fox News Host Rips Apart Colleague's Claim That Trump Isn't 'Afraid Of Anything'

Ben Blanchet

Fox News ’ Jessica Tarlov shut down her “The Five” co-host Jeanine Pirro after she claimed former President Donald Trump is “not afraid of anything” on Wednesday.

The liberal commentator argued that it’s “complete insanity” to call Joe Biden a “threat to democracy,” a label that Trump recently put on the president before his Democratic rival launched the description back at him .

Tarlov noted that Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 election and many involved in the plot are still facing trial, adding that he is doing “his darnedest” to not show up to the courtrooms as he’s “definitely afraid of what’s going to happen there.”

“He’s not afraid of anything,” Pirro interjected.

“Oh, big man, not afraid. Whatever,” Tarlov shot back.

“I know him, he’s not,” Pirro replied.

“OK, I’m sure you do know him and I don’t know him, but I don’t think that that man who doesn’t even want to sleep in a hotel bed wants to go to jail,” said Tarlov in a nod to a report that Trump often flew back to New York to sleep in his bed after rallies during the 2016 campaign.

Jessica: Trump is definitely afraid of what is going to happen there   Jeanine: He’s not afraid of anything. Trump —who is facing a total of 88 felony charges across several cases — has privately wondered about what would happen if he was convicted and his appeals fail, according to Rolling Stone.

The presumptive GOP presidential nominee told “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker in September that he doesn’t “even think about” going to jail when he goes to bed at night.

“I’m built a little differently I guess, because I have had people come up to me and say, ‘How do you do it, sir? How do you do it?’ I don’t even think about it,” he told Welker last year.

Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle: Chomp Champs launches May 9

Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle: Chomp Champs launches May 9

Full details on the 64-player multiplayer that lets you travel to and interact with other players’ mazes.

travel man original host

Pac-Man fans have been eating dots and chomping ghosts for years and there’s no sign that our collective appetites will be satiated any time soon.

But what happens when Pac-Man fans challenge each other to find out whose hunger reigns supreme? This is the question we can finally answer in the arena of competitive eating, offered by Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle: Chomp Champs coming to PS5 and PS4 with cross-play on May 9. Early access starts May 2 for those who pre-order the Deluxe Edition.

Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle: Chomp Champs is an online-only 64-player Pac-Man game, played across just as many interconnected mazes. Eat everything in your own maze

The developer behind the title is Amber Studio, an incredibly diverse team with Pac-passion and excited by the challenge of bringing this gameplay to a wider audience.

In Chomp Champs, every choice made was geared towards bringing more players into the action. For example, a tutorial maze was added at the start of the game to help new players ramp up and get comfortable. Different game modes are included so that hard-core competitive players and casual fans can all find a mode to enjoy.

While there have already been multiplayer Pac-Man games where players compete to be the last Pac standing, what sets Chomp Champs apart is that you can directly travel to other mazes and interact with other players. There’s a variety of mazes like the Autumn maze, showing how Pac-Man’s world changes throughout the seasons, or you can feel some nostalgia with the Mr. Driller maze.

In each match there are 64 players, each with their own maze laid out in a grid connected to neighboring mazes by Mega Tunnels. When the tunnels open you can take the action to your neighbor which opens up a world of crazy gameplay possibilities.

As the match goes on, the lowest-scoring mazes get slowly eliminated from the playing field. The maze border flashes as a warning, so players know to get out of that maze before it’s too late. Each time a maze is eliminated the remaining mazes click together.

The development team even included a classic visual effect used here which is a tribute to the 256 glitch from the original Pac-Man arcade game. This lets you know that the board has changed, and you have a new neighboring maze to explore. As mazes get eliminated, players have fewer places to go, eventually bringing all remaining Pac-Man players together for the final showdown until only the Chomp Champ remains.

There are seven Power Items in Chomp Champs – some are straightforward easy-to-use boosters, while others will take some practice to truly master. Get more lives with an Extra Life or protect yourself with the Pac Shield. Use Speedy Pac for a burst of speed to escape danger or win the race to a Power Pellet. Use Ghost Attract strategically to set up a big ghost chomp combo or lure ghosts to other Pacs. Speedy Ghost can be a double-edged sword because it makes the ghosts faster for you and your opponents in the same maze. But if players combine it with other powerups they can keep safe while making opponents struggle in the chaos. These strategies are possible because you can hold up to two Power Items. Use them at the time of your choosing to turn the tables!

The customization system in Chomp Champs gives you so many ways to express your personality. You can select your home maze, your player icon, and your Pac-Man’s outfit to create a ton of unique combinations. You have several customizations available as soon as you load the game for the first time. But there’s more to be unlocked by redeeming Tokens earned in Elimination mode.

There are also six exclusive customization items available as part of our Chomp Challengers Pac pre-order bonus and more than 20 customization options available via the Deluxe Edition, including seven-days early access.

In playtests, we’ve seen players who love to eat their neighbor’s Power Pellets, steal their Power Items, or even eat their neighboring Pac-Man. Others team-up and help other players by eating ghosts and saving them from trouble! Some players just really enjoy showing off their cool customizations and funny reactions. We tried to give players as many ways as possible to express their Pac-Man personalities in the game.

Since mazes are interconnected players can explore the arena, visit or check out their neighbor and continue from there. Each match plays out a bit differently, so expect the unexpected in Chomp City!
