Are you looking at how to get to Lake Toba from Medan in North Sumatra, Indonesia? If so then you’re in the right place!

We enjoyed our time at Lake Toba and found its tranquillity, Batak culture and stunning landscapes wonderful. If we ever make it back to Sumatra (hopefully), it’s on the “return list”.

However, getting to Lake Toba from Medan on public transport was a challenge! We actually came straight from Bukit Lawang thinking we could make it in one day, we didn’t, but since we had to pass through Medan, we know exactly how it’s done! If you need a transport guide to Bukit Lawang, it’s here.

Since it took every type of transport for us to reach Lake Toba, we thought a comprehensive guide to walking you through the various methods of transport available would be helpful!

This Lake Toba transportation guide is going to ensure you a smooth journey to this breathtaking destination.

From there you should be able to secure yourself transport to Lake Toba.

How To Get To Lake Toba: Exploring Your Options

If you’re heading for Sumatra, the most popular airport is in the city of Medan (Kualanamu International Airport) . It’s a large(ish) airport and does have a number of international flights in and out.

Therefore, it’s possible to fly direct to North Sumatra, bypassing internal transfers through Java or Bali – depending on where you’re coming from.

There is also a smaller airport – Silangit Airport – located 2 hours from the port town of Parapat at Lake Toba, (this is where you’ll want to go to catch the ferry over to Samosir Island). You can fly from Medan to Silangit in 30 minutes.

However, we came from Medan and so I’ll be taking you through our journey.

Whether you’re arriving at Medan Airport or from Medan city centre, there are multiple transport options to take you to Lake Toba. This guide covers the three main modes of travel: train, bus, and private car.

Looking To Book Your Holiday Soon? Check Prices Below.

How to get to lake toba by train.

In total, you’re looking at a minimum of 6.5 hours to complete the journey from Medan Airport to Parapat, Lake Toba, plus any transfer/waiting time.

The best way to get to Lake Toba is to jump on the train at Medan.

Amazingly, since it was the only time we experienced a railway line in Indonesia, Lake Toba is connected to Medan by train, or at least halfway.

There’s a rail line running from Medan Airport to Medan Central Station . At Medan Central Station, you’ll need to jump onto another train to Pematang Siantar Station.

Since we came from Bukit Lawang we arrived at Medan Central Station but it was on our initial arrival we used the airport rail link. It’s pretty great and means travel is a lot more comfortable.

I recommend you take the train too! However, the only train departing to Pematang Siantar Station is at 2 pm. This means you will miss the last ferry to Samosir Island and so you’ll need to arrange accommodation in Parapat for the night.

✔️The fare from Medan Airport to Medan Central Station is IDR 80,000 p/p, one-way. (£ / $) ✔️The fare from Medan Central Station to Pematang Siantar Station is IDR 22,000 p/p, one-way. (£ / ) ✔️You’re looking at around 35-40 minutes of travel time to get from Medan Airport to Medan Central Station (these leave regularly enough) and then 4 hours to Pematang Siantar Station, traffic dependant – it’s quite a slow-moving train.

Pemtang Siantar Station To Parapat

Once we arrived at Pematang Siantar Station there was supposed to be a bus outside to Parapat, however, no bus was to be found! Luckily we had met two Indonesian lads who were heading there too and together we managed to find the way.

Making new friends as we try to find our way to Lake Toba

If there is no bus when you step off the train, follow these instructions:

✔️Don’t jump in the first taxi/becak which comes running over, they always cost more! ✔️Instead, walk out of the station a little bit and jump in one on the main road.  ✔️The fare should be IDR 10.000 and you’re going to Intersection 2 (which is the bus stop to Parapat) ✔️The bus fee is IDR 25,000 and will take you to Parapat in about 2 hours, traffic depending.

Jack squashed inside a becak!

Remember, you’ll be reaching Parapat after dark and so it’s best to have your accommodation sorted before you arrive.

It’s not really somewhere you’ll want to spend much time and the accommodations aren’t great, but for one night, these three will do:

These Are Our Suggested Hotels

📍 valencia homestay redpartner.

Valencia Homestay Redpartner is a 1-star property located in Parapat. This 1-star hotel offers a 24-hour front desk. The hotel also provides free WiFi and free private parking.

📍 RedDoorz near Danau Toba Parapat

RedDoorz near Danau Toba Parapat is a 2-star property situated in Parapat. This 2-star hotel offers a 24-hour front desk and free WiFi. There is a restaurant serving Asian cuisine, and free private parking is available.

📍 Khas Parapat

The Inna Parapat is located in the mountains near Lake Toba. This secluded resort is a 3-hour drive from the capital of Medan. Free Wi-Fi and free parking are available.

How To Get To Lake Toba By Bus

In total, you’re looking at a minimum of 4.5 hours to complete the journey from Medan Airport to Parapat, Lake Toba, plus any transfer/waiting time.

Catching the local buses is a great way to get to Lake Toba.

If you want to get to Samosir Island on the same day, then you might want to consider taking the bus. We caught the bus back to Medan from Parapat and lucky for us it was practically empty, nevertheless, it was still hot.

If you’re catching a local bus it’s unlikely it will have air-con and it is usually full. We just visited during a very quiet period post-pandemic.

We had a wild time trying to reach the airport after the bus had dropped us off at God knows where. Supposedly a bus station, but there was nothing and no one around. We had to walk in the sweaty heat with our hefty bags to the main road where we waited for hours for a bus that never came.

In the end, we jumped in a taxi only to have a dispute with them over the cost; it had been agreed before we got in but the driver decided to change his mind saying the cost was for one person!

Anyways, we caught that bus from the main road at Parapat and if you’re happy to pay for a taxi at the other end (it really wasn’t that much), then you’re journey won’t be as stressful as ours.

Abi happy to finally be on the bus from Lake Toba to Medan!

That said, it was at 10:40 AM on a weekday! We did wait on the side of the road, under the umbrella of a local’s food stall, who in the end was helping us to catch the correct bus.

Medan Central To Lake Toba

Moving on, if you’re catching the bus from central Medan to Lake Toba , you’ll want to get to Amplas Bus Terminal.

If you’re coming from Bukit Lawang like us, you’ll get dropped off at Pingang Baris Bus Terminal (if you catch the bus all the way back to Medan – no train). From there, you’ll want the local bus going to Amplas Bus Station.

✔️The fare from Pingang Baris Bus Terminal to Amplas Bus Terminal is IDR 15,000 (£/$) p/p one-way. ✔️The fare from Amplas Bus Terminal to Parapat is IDR 50,000 (£/$) p/p one-way. ✔️From Amplas Bus Terminal to Parapat it should take around 4 hours travel time, traffic dependant. From Pingang Baris it’s about 40 minutes to Amplas.

Medan Airport To Lake Toba

If you’re departing directly from the airport there are a few ways to reach Lake Toba. Exit the airport and turn right outside to find the buses.

From the airport, there is the Damri bus company which will take you to Amplas Bus Terminal, from there you can jump on another bus to Parapat.

✔️The fare from Medan Airport to Amplas Bus Terminal is IDR 15,000 (£/$) p/p one-way. ✔️You’re looking at around 20 minutes of travel time to get from Medan Airport to Amplas.

It’s also possible to take the Paradep bus company to Pematang Siantar and then another bus to Parapat.

✔️The fare from Medan Airport to Pematang Siantar is IDR 55,000 (£/$) p/p one-way. ✔️The fare from Pematang Siantar to Parapat is IDR 25,000 (£/$) p/p one-way. ✔️In total, the journey should take around 4 hours but again, this depends on the traffic.

Or, I’ve also read you can take a coach directly to Parapat via Nice Trans bus company , it’s just more expensive however the information is not so clear on this one.

✔️The fare is IDR 450,000 (£/$). I’m not sure if this is for one person or a group but the takeaway is that there is a direct bus.

Getting to Lake Toba can be an adventure.

How To Get To Lake Toba By Private Transfer

In total, you’re looking at a minimum of 4 hours to complete the journey from Medan Airport to Parapat, Lake Toba, plus any transfer/waiting time.

How to get to Lake Toba and Samosir Island views.

If you’ve got a spare buck then the most convenient way to reach Lake Toba is by private transfer. This mode of transport offers flexibility, comfort and stress-free travel.

For a seamless experience, a bit of pre-planning is helpful as you’ll want to ensure you book with a reputable company.

If you’re looking to pre-book online , make sure you do your research and look for comfortable vehicles with air-con, experienced drivers and positive customer reviews.

We like to use Viator to book our transfers and tours, they have a highly reviewed private car transfer service here.

Once you’ve made your booking I would contact them in advance and confirm the date and pick-up. Provide them with your flight details if you have them. I’d also reconfirm a couple of days before and then the day before, just to be sure!

Make sure you’re clear about where you’re getting picked up and at what time. If they can meet you at the arrival gate with a sign, all the better! Ensure that you have your luggage ready and communicate any special requirements you may have.

✔️You’re looking at around £95.00 / $120.00 for a pre-booked service through online platforms like Viator. ✔️If you pick up a private car from the airport the fee should be around IDR 500,000 to 800,000 (£25.00 / $32.00)

Shared Taxi

It’s possible to find a private car at the airport although rates are not set and you’re likely to get bombarded by drivers when you exit the airport. You can also get a shared taxi although I wouldn’t recommend this as in our experience it’s not comfortable and takes forever as it will make multiple stops.

If you’re thinking to do that, better catch the local buses/train.

How To Get To Lake Toba By Rental Car

How to get to Lake Toba and stunning views

Embarking on a road trip to Lake Toba by rental car offers you the freedom to explore at your own pace and discover the hidden gems of Indonesia’s landscapes. Jack and I would absolutely love to do a road trip around Sumatra, we did one in Bali and it was epic!

That said, before setting out make sure to research and book a reliable rental car company that offers vehicles suitable for your travel group and needs. Ensure the rental car is equipped with GPS for easy navigation!

Keep in mind that driving in Indonesia is on the left-hand side, with the driver’s seat on the right-hand side. Familiarise yourself with local traffic rules and road signs before starting your journey.

In most cases, a driver’s license issued in your home country is valid for driving in Indonesia . However, it’s a good idea to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your local license for added convenience and compliance.

Consider breaking up your journey to Lake Toba with a stop in Berastagi. This charming town offers a chance to rest, explore local attractions, and enjoy the picturesque surroundings before continuing your drive to Lake Toba.

✔️Rental Price for a 7-day rental is estimated at £550.00 / $700.00 . ✔️The journey direct can be done in 4 hours.

Pro Tip: While Google Maps works well in most areas, be prepared for possible gaps in coverage, particularly in isolated or mountainous terrains. Remember to plan ahead, prioritise safety, and embrace the spontaneity of the open road.

How To Get To Samosir Island

Jack walking from our hotel in Parapat to the Port to get to Samosir Island.

You’ve made it to Parapat, finally! Parapat is a popular port town of Lake Toba and the closest port to Medan. It’s where you’ll get dropped off and where you’ll catch the ferry over to Samosir Island.

Samosir Island is the main tourist hub of Lake Toba and is filled with Batak-style architecture, markets, tourist attractions and fantastic hiking opportunities. It’s a beautiful and tranquil island and somewhere you should absolutely be visiting!

To get to Samosir Island head to Port Tiga Raja in Parapat , which is the departure point for the ferry to Samosir Island. The ferry ride offers a picturesque experience of Lake Toba’s beauty.

How to get to Lake Toba? You'll have to go on these colourful ferries!

Ferries from Parapat to Samosir Island are a convenient and cost-effective mode of transportation. Unlike buses, ferry timings are generally reliable although hiccups do occur and the last ferry is often cancelled.

Apart from that, you can trust that the ferry will depart…eventually!

✔️The fare is IDR 15,000 per person.  ✔️The ferry should run every half hour on the hour starting from 8:30 am onwards. The last ferry departs from Parapat at 7 pm, giving you ample time to plan your trip.

The ferry journey across Lake Toba to and from Samosir Island typically takes around 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your drop-off point. Use this time to soak in the breathtaking views and appreciate the tranquil surroundings.

Lake Toba: Travel Guide to Samosir Island

' src=

We’ve already covered things to do in Lake Toba in another article. It covers some of the highlights including the waterfalls on Samosir Island, kayaking and a host of other things. Our Lake Toba travel cover the more practical things you need to know for your trip. Let’s get started!

How to Get to Lake Toba From Medan

There are several options to get to Lake Toba from the city of Medan. The most convenient option is to fly direct to Medan. From there you can travel overland to Prapat, before hopping on the ferry for the final leg to Samosir Island. The cheapest option to get from Medan to Prapat is by public bus.

The public bus to Parapat, bus 64, leaves from the Amplas Bus Terminal in the center of Medan. The bus is usually crowded, but it’s a good way to adjust to the local culture. Make sure you buy your ticket in the bus and not from people who approach you at the bus terminal. A bus ticket from Medan to Parapat should cost between Rp. 20,000 to Rp. 40,000, no more. The ride takes 4 to 6 hours.

If you’re travelling as part of a small group I’d recommend arranging a shared taxi. You can arrange a shared taxi in Medan. A minivan taxi seats 7 people. If you have less than 7 people in your group then you can pay for the additional free seats to leave early (otherwise you will have to wait). The price of a seat is Rp. 80,000.

Medan to Pematang by Train

Taking the train is a great way to travel comfortably and take in the surroundings. I’d definitely recommend it. You can catch a train from Medan to Pematang Siantar. It leaves once a day and costs Rp. 40,000 for a one-way ticket. The train ride takes around 4 hours and from Pematang Siantar. From Pematang Sinatar you can take a becak (local transport) to Parapat where you can catch the ferry.

Arrange a Private Car Rental

The most convenient way to get from Medan to Parapat is with a private car rental. You can arrange a private car rental from Medan to Parapat for around Rp. 400,000. You won’t have to worry about unnecessary stops along the way with a car rental, but you’ll still get to see the views. The rise from Medan to Parapat takes around 4 hours.

Ferry from Parapat to Samosir Island

To get from Parapat to Samosir Island you need to take the ferry. The ferry runs every half hour. It costs Rp. 7,000 per person. On Samosir Island you can get off at either Tuk Tuk or Tomok, depending on where you want to stay. Tuk Tuk has the most guesthouses and hotels. The last ferry leaves at 7:30 pm during peak season and 6 pm in low season. Buy your ticket on the boat to get the right price.

Where to stay in Tuk Tuk

Tuk Tuk is a charming little town by the lake. It’s home to lots of guesthouses, restaurants and bars. The most popular hotels are along the shoreline and many are built in the traditional Batak style. You can find choices for all budgets. Below are a few recommendations for nice places to stay.

If you are on a budget I’d recommend Laster Jony’s . The rooms are basic, but who cares when you are treated to such wonderful lake views every morning. Laster Jony’s offers traditional Batak-style bungalows with little balconies overlooking the lake. The hotel has its charms.

Best Mid-Range Hotels in Tuk Tuk

A nice mid-range option is Gokhon Guest House . The rooms are comfortable with en-suite bathrooms, hot showers and free Wi-Fi. Like Laster Jony’s you get mesmerizing lake views. Another nice option in the same price range is Horas Family Home . The hotel has private bungalows, which is super convenient for families.

Best Luxury Hotel in Tuk Tuk

The closest thing to a luxury hotel on Samosir Island is the 3-star Lake Toba Village Inn . The rooms are comfortably furnished with balconies offering views over the lake and Pusuk Buhit Mountain. Guests get a complimentary western breakfast and there’s a swimming pool overlooking the lake where you can relax after your travels.

Getting around Samosir Island

Samosir Island is quite large. The best way to explore the area is by motorbike. You can rent a motorbike at most hotels and/ or guesthouses. A day rental costs between Rp. 50,000 to Rp. 100,000, depending on the season, fuel and your bargaining skills. Road conditions aren’t the best though, so drive carefully, wear a helmet and take is easy. It is also a wise decision to be back before dark.

If you don’t want to drive, but still want to explore Samosir you can take a public boats between towns. It is cheap (around Rp. 10,000 one way) and a relaxing way to explore. Alternatively, you can rent a bicycle to see some more of the surroundings orrent a kayak and paddle away on the lake.

Best Restaurants on Samosir

Food is always very important! The Batak people have their own cuisine and their kitchen is ruled by fresh fish, pork and delicious Andaliman spices. Of course there’s also lots of fish. The best place to go for freshly caught fish is Jenny’s Restaurant. They serve seasoned, steamed or grilled fish. There is also live music every night for you to enjoy after dinner.

If you want to try pork I’d recommend Horas Shugary. The food is delicious and the views are amazing. Make sure you try the traditional Batak Dish Pork Sak Sang. Another popular place to eat on the island is Today’s Cafe. The service is friendly, the food is affordable and do some great vegetarian dishes as well.

Final Thoughts

Now you are all set: you know how to get to Lake Toba, where to stay on Samosir Island, what to eat and how to get around. I think this should be enough to get you going. I hope you enjoy your time at Lake Toba and come away from your holiday with great memories and some beautiful photos.

Medan to Rantau Prapat by train (North Sumatra)

December 14, 2023 By James Clark Leave a Comment

Medan to Rantau Prapat by train

The train from Medan to Rantau Prapat is the longest railway journey in North Sumatra (266 km). It’s not a route that is useful from a tourism perspective, but if you are curious to take a trip then here is what to expect.

I bought my ticket at Medan station on the morning of travel. I tried booking online on the KAI website but it was not user-friendly in English.

I was offered Bisnis or Eksekutif seats. I was surprised there wasn’t an “Ekonomi” option, so I went with Bisnis and decided to try Eksekutif on the way back.

A Bisnis ticket from Medan to Rantau Prapat cost 155,000 IDR ($10 USD).

Ticket to Rantau Prapat

Medan to Rantau Prapat

There are three trains a day in each direction. The stations have easy-to-read timetables for every service. If only the website was designed as user-friendly.

Medan-Rantauprapat Timetable

Each service has a service number and name. I got the morning service KA Sribilah (KA U52).

This service departs Medan at 8:15 and arrives at Rantau Prapat at 13:57.

KA Sribilah Medan-Rantau Prapat

The platforms are not aligned with the trains, so steps are wheeled to the door.

Steps at Medan

The Bisnis Class carriage.

Bisnis

I was wondering if I entered the right carriage as the seats were bench seats. At least they were padded seats.

Bisnis seats

The carriages are air-conditioned, and the A/C units appeared to be household air conditioning that are just bolted to the ceiling. The carriage had an ideal temperature (not set to freezing as I have experienced in Malaysia).

Bisnis carriage

Food and drinks

A drinks cart goes through the carriages, so I got a coffee (instant coffee) for 13,000 IDR ($0.84 USD).

Coffee cart

There is a little table by the window for everyone to share. There are power outlets by the window, but no wifi.

Coffee

I had the mie goreng for lunch (20,000 IDR / $1.29 USD), and they were selling chicken rice for breakfast. If you have dietary restrictions then you probably already know to come prepared when travelling in Indonesia.

Mie Goreng

Toilets onboard have the option of squat or seat toilets.

Squat toilet

If you’ve never been to Sumatra, your image of Sumatra might be of jungles with Sumatran tigers roaming around, and plantations would be of the coffee variety. The reality is that most of the scenery along this route is palm oil plantations (and the tigers are critically endangered).

Palm plantation

Rice farms are also a common sight along this route.

Flooded rice fields

There are some big river crossings as well, which I kept track of when we were crossing on my mobile map.

River crossing

The windows of the train were tinted with this unnatural purple colour, which spoiled the view. I took some photos at the door windows.

Tinted window view

Rantau Prapat

Rantau Prapat (or Rantauprapat) is the last station on this line. The platforms are low here as well, so stairs are wheeled to the train doors.

Train platform at Rantau Prapat

There was a swarm of motorbike taxis waiting out the front. The station is not far from the city centre (by my standards at least) so I walked into the city (about 20 minutes). I got a motorbike taxi to the station when I left for 20,000 IDR.

Motorbike taxis at Rantau Prapat

There is a plan to extend the line to Pekanbaru, which would eventually form part of the Trans-Sumatra Railway . This is years away from being a reality, so don’t wait up for it.

I spent two nights in Rantau Prapat, and I didn’t see any foreigners while I was there. I always figure that I can spend a day in any city, but two days was more than enough. I will have a separate trip report for Rantau Prapat ( subscribe to my travel newsletter to get updates on my latest posts).

On the return journey I went in “Eksekutif” class (Executive). I booked the ticket at the station and there was no problem in getting a seat.

Rantau Prapat ticket office

I like how the stations display the distances to each station.

Distance from Rantau Prapat

Given the name, I was expecting that Eksekutif would be a single seat (which can be found on train services in Java). This seat configuration looks more like a regular economy.

Eksekutif seats Medan - Rantau Prapat

The tickets are cheap so I wasn’t complaining, it is just an odd naming convention. It’s always nice to be on a train instead of a bus when you have legroom like this.

Eksekutif foot rest

The seats in Eksekutif have a tray so you don’t have to eat on your lap like in Bisnis.

Eksekutif coffee

On this section I got off at Tebing Tinggi so I could get the train to Siantar (and then bus to Lake Toba) .

Thoughts on the Medan to Rantau Prapat service

This was an interesting experience as this is not a well-known train service. It’s a better travel option than getting the bus, so I hope they continue to expand the network.

My concern is with how slow the service is. The trip takes 5h 42m to travel 266 km. That works out to be 44.91 km/h. If this is going to be part of the Trans-Sumatra Railway, then what’s the point of building it if it’s going to take days to travel from one end of Sumatra to the other.

Itinerary Tour Medan Parapat Samosir 3 Days 2 Nights

Laketobatour.com – Maimoon Palace has proven to be an integral part of the Indonesian culture and heritage.

The majestic palace, built in 1888, showcases the perfect marriage of western and Islamic architectural design.

Spanish, Indian and Italian influences are evident throughout the palace’s exterior and interior designs. It is just one example of the attractions in Medan that you will visit.

About 5 hours from Medan lies Lake Toba . It is the remains of a supervolcanic eruption that dates back to 74,000 years ago.

The caldera that forms the central part of the volcano collapsed and was gradually filled with water to become the biggest crater lake in the world.

Similiar Tour : Tour Medan Lake Toba 3 Days 2 Nights

Due to rising caldera floor, an island known as Samosir emerged at the center of the lake. It is now home to many traditional villages.

Ambarita is perhaps the most visited village on Samosir Island due to its intriguing cultural history.

The Toba Batak people who lived there used to practice cannibalism. Hence, stone furniture used to sentence and behead criminals is here.

Hi, I will take Medan airport bus to P. Siantar bus terminal and transfer to Perapat. May I know the name of Bus/Mini bus terminal of Pematang Siantar to Perapat Ferry ? Thank you.

The last time I did that route on public transport I used one of the travel/7 seater/ mini van type vans to take me from the airport straight down to the jetty at Parapat. Organised at the desk just as you get to where the buses sit (out terminal and take a right for 30 seconds). Much better and saves you a transfer at Siantar.

Dear JbGan,

The name of the Bus/Mini bus terminal of Pematang Siantar is Parluasan.

Having said that I fully agree with Donnie that it is much better to head straight to Parapat.

Your options are:

1. Shared taxi from Airport to the Parapat Jetty

2. DAMRI bus to Amplas Bus terminal Medan.

From Amplas Bus or Mini bus to Sosorsaba Bus terminal in Parapat

Angkot to Parapat Ferry

Hi Horas, is it worth for a short (1 to 2 hours city tour) in Pematang Siantar? Is it convenience to get a bus/van/public transport

to Perapat from Pematang Siantar?

Siantar is well worth a 1 to 2 hrs stopover, especially if you are interested in Traditional Local Shopping (Pajak Horas Market) and /or would be interested in a visit of Vihara Avalokitesvara with Kwan Im Temple.

From any place in Siantar take an angkot to drop you at Simpang Dua where you find the shared taxi services to Parapat.

Thank you Horas.

You are most welcome. Any elucidation on why and now this ‘thank you’ will be appreciated.

  10. Medan to Rantau Prapat by train (North Sumatra)

Thoughts on the Medan to Rantau Prapat service. This was an interesting experience as this is not a well-known train service. It's a better travel option than getting the bus, so I hope they continue to expand the network. My concern is with how slow the service is. The trip takes 5h 42m to travel 266 km.
