These similarities make it easy to know what to do and expect when you first visit a site. Typically, you enter your destinations, dates, and number of travelers. After you click search, you can further filter based on price range, airlines, and departure times for flights; amenities, hotel stars, and location for hotels; and type of car and rental car company for cars. 

So what makes one site better than another?

It all depends on your priorities and preferences. Everyone travels and plans for that travel differently. Here are seven travel sites and the factors you should consider when choosing a site.

Booking.com is a huge bank of information, offering more than 1 million properties in 117,000 destinations in 225 countries and territories. Wherever you'd like to go, you'll find it through this site. It offers booking for flights,  hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars.  Clicking  restaurants will take you to OpenTable. 

Highlights:

I found their desktop homepage to be cluttered and a lot to look at compared to the homepages of other sites, but their app experience was noticeably simpler, which makes sense as travelers increasingly turn mobile. 

One feature on the homepage that stood out to me (shown above) was the "Are you traveling for work?" option. Clicking "Yes" will present popular business travel options like WiFi and breakfast.

Another feature was its flexible date suggestions if your chosen destination is a popular choice and accommodations are more than 50% reserved during your selected dates.

The "My Trips" section is helpful for managing your entire itinerary in one place, so you don't have to search through endless emails and accounts to figure out your vacation plan. 

If you sign up as a member, you can earn Expedia+ points to use toward future trips. Use the mobile app to earn 2x Expedia+ points. 

Like Booking.com, Expedia also offers suggestions for date shifts, date extensions, and route changes to get you to the cheapest deal.

TripAdvisor is the most experience-driven travel site. You are not just booking somewhere to live — you're signing up to experience and explore a destination.

CheapOair offers booking for  flights, hotels, and rental cars.  Clicking on its cruises  tab takes you to another site, Cheap Cruises.  

The "Travel by Interest" section offers special deals for senior , military , student , and last minute travel . The military and student discounts emphasize keeping costs low, while the senior discount focuses on senior friendly destinations at an affordable price. 

Whether you're coordinating a reunion, wedding, or corporate event, a Group Travel Request is a good option. You can work with an agent on your travel needs. 

• Specific travelers like senior citizens, military, students, and large groups
• Higher than usual service fees (e.g. $32 per night per room for hotel bookings)

Book a trip with CheapOair

Hotwire offers booking for  flights, hotels, and rental cars.

Hotwire gives you all the filters and options you need but maintains the balance of not giving you too much. It keeps its sections simple, so you don't need to worry about something you may be missing out on. 

Thanks to partnerships with other travel sites like Hotels.com and Expedia, Hotwire can offer extremely low prices. There is also a free 24-hour cancellation policy on most flights. 

• Focused searchers who do not want to be distracted or overwhelmed by too many options, things to do, and city guides. Destination guides and inspiration can be found on a separate blog page.

Travelocity.

Travelocity offers booking for  flights, hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, cruises and things to do.  And no, you're not seeing double. Expedia owns Travelocity, which may explain why the two homepages look almost exactly the same. 

From what we can tell, the most noticeable difference is Travelocity's Roaming Gnome, which represents the inspiration and wanderlust of traveling. The "Inspiration" section contains interesting articles like "Best Foodie Finds in Airports Around the World" and themes like "Luxury" or "Romantic." Expedia's travel blog, on the other hand, is relegated to an easy-to-miss link near the bottom of the page. 

• All the benefits of Expedia but with a more exploratory inspiration angle 
•  Single bookings. The site is best utilized for its bundle packaging.

Book a trip with Travelocity

Priceline offers booking for  flights, hotels, rental cars, and cruises.  

The " Express Deals " option rewards flexible travelers with up to 60% savings on hotels. The site will give you the location and star rating, but not the name of the hotel. You can still choose the bed type for many of the options. 

Another way to save is the Name Your Own Price feature where you input the location, star rating, and price bid for a hotel. 

For car rentals, you can also Name Your Own Price and bid for a car. If you don't have big preferences on the car brand, you'll be able to find a car for a price less than the search listings give you. For example, I was able to get an economy car with unlimited mileage for $30 a day, while the general search yielded cars that were all at least $37 a day. 

The cruise section is clear and easy to navigate. The search option is similar to searching for flights, with more dropdown selections than other sites. This feature is ideal for travelers who know exactly what they want for their cruise experience, and are not merely shopping around.

Top Websites for Getting There

Step one of planning a trip is figuring out how to get there. Whether you are looking for a flight, train or bus, these sites are worth looking at!

1. Skiplagged

Skiplagged helps you find the cheapest flights possible, even if that means booking a ticket that has a layover in your destination city and not getting on the second flight. For example, say you wanted to fly from Boise, ID to Los Angeles, CA. Skiplagged found that a flight from Boise to San Diego that has a layover in Los Angeles is cheaper than flying from Boise to Los Angeles. While there are many cheap flight websites out there, Skiplagged is one of the only one that takes layovers into consideration. The only downside to this is that passengers can not check baggage since it will continue on the flight without you!

2. RocketMiles

This website allows you to earn a large quantity of Frequent Flyer miles for many different airline rewards programs just by booking certain hotels. Simply enter which Frequent Flyer program you are a member of and which city you need a hotel in, and RocketMiles will return results that will help you earn no less than 500 airline miles. Depending on the rules of your rewards program and how many other points you have, use the additional points to get there!

If flying isn’t your thing, check out WanderU. The website uses buses and trains to get you from point A to point B. It gives you the options to sort by distance, travel time, arrival time or price, and will show you exactly how to get to each station needed during the travel. WanderU saves you from having to search through the websites of countless discount bus websites and immediately pulls up the least expensive options and provides you with links to book each leg of the journey.

Jetsetter is a members only travel booking website. You can find some of the best hotels along with “flash sales”, all organized by region in the world. The hotels have either been personally verified by Jetsetter corespondents or meet a certain set of criteria. The website also has apartment and home rentals and travel planners to help members plan a personalized vacation.

Stayful is a wonderful alternative to your run-of-the-mill hotel deal websites. Like Priceline, it allows you to either bid for hotel rooms up to 30 days in advanced, or to use the deals the website has found for you. However, unlike the other hotel deal websites, it features only independent boutique hotels, so you will get a unique experience.

This website allows you to book hotels online with a best price guarantee. Agoda also allows you to sign in and manage your bookings right on their website. The site is easy to use and many of the hotels offer the “book now, pay later” feature. You can also sign up to receive promotional emails with great deals and special offers from Agoda.

Booking.com is interesting because it allows you to search destinations by what you may be looking for, whether its a top destination for beaches or fine dining. It also offers the “book now, pay later” feature and free cancellation on many of its rooms. Search by price range or type of property to find your best stay.

This website will pull up the top 10 hotels for whichever city and date you are looking for. The website will also give you the best deal based on what other websites, some listed here, are offering. For example, the best price for one of the hotels may be on Agoda, so clicking on the link takes you to Agoda’s page for that hotel.

If you prefer the comfort of home rather than hotels, these sites are worth looking into!

9. Kid & Coe

If you are traveling with kids, this site is not to be missed. On Kid & Coe, you can book apartments and houses that are family friendly. You can contact both Kid & Coe and the property owners easily on the site. Upon booking, you are given an online city guide and a list of things to do in the city during your stay, all compiled by local parents. This website is one of the best for planning a great family friendly vacation!

10. Villas.com

Villas.com is great if you need a little more space. You can book lavish villas and chalets all around the world on the site, with properties ranging from single family homes to resort properties. If you enter a country as your destination they will help you narrow it down to find you ideal location. Some fun facts about the properties? Nearly half of them accept pets, 89% of reviews rave about the stunning views for the properties, and there are over 5,000 private swimming pools on the site!

11. House Trip

They have discounts on hotels that you can book at any time, sales, and also “impulse” rates. The “impulse” hotels are those that you can search for on Thursday to travel that weekend. As it is a luxury hotel site, there is a separate category for day and overnight spa vacations. Some deals even include flights!

14. Holidify

Holidify is the website to use if you want to take a trip to India. You can search hotels and things to do by location (“Explore”), or you can search for weekend getaways by distance from your current location in India. Holidify also has a blog for all the information you could need for your trip. The coolest feature, in my opinion, is the “surprise me” function that will pick a random place for you to go to. The informational page that comes up is the same as the one that would come up had you used the “explore” feature, but you don’t have to search for anything in particular. This website is not to be missed for a vacation to India.

Top Websites for Vacation Planning

If your main concern is what you will do while you’re on vacation rather than where you will stay, these websites are for you!

Peek allows you to search and book activities, tours, and day trips within the city you are traveling to, many times offering a best price guarantee. It also enlisted the help of celebrities who have planned out their perfect day in the city and shared it with the Peek users! These perfect days also include lists of favorite spots for each of the celebrities. This is a great site to check out if you already know your destination or are looking for something different to do in your hometown.

After more than a decade of booking travel online, I’d like to share all of the best ways on saving money.

You can jump straight to the list of the best travel websites below if you’d like, but I’ll going to share a few tidbits that may help you save a little extra money.

**Use A Shopping Portal!**

This is a must do!

What’s a shopping portal? Well, basically you sign into a particular cash back shopping portal site (which is free to use by the way), search for your travel website or service, and then get forwarded to that webpage. By using the shopping portal, you’ll earn cash back into your account.

These shopping portals get incentives for referring you to travel companies, so in turn you get a cut of those incentives! A win-win for everyone! Did I mention it costs you NOTHING to use?

I’ve always used Rakuten ( sign-up bonus here ) for all of my travel and general online shopping needs to earn cash back, but find all the top options here .

I typically earn 1-3% cash back or more when I book through Priceline.com using Rakuten, and almost all of the other popular travel sites and companies are listed there also.

• Airlines : I’ve found booking through the airlines’ websites will sometimes be exactly the same price as a travel website, and sometimes there’s a $1 difference. After you’ve narrowed down an exact flight on a travel website, look at the pricing directly through that airline’s webpage for a comparison. Booking through the airline’s website will make it more streamlined when choosing your seats, and sometimes the refund/change policy is voided/restricted when using a travel website. If you actually have an airline branded credit card, you’ll usually have to book directly through the airline to accrue points/miles as well.
• Hotels : Just like for airlines, compare pricing directly through the hotel’s website once you’ve narrowed it down on the travel website. Hotels many times will offer promotions available only through their own website. If there are no promotions going on, I almost always find the price on the travel website to be a better deal, especially when you use features such as Priceline’s Name Your Own Price or Express Deals. You’ll typically have to book directly through the hotel’s website to get points with your hotel branded credit card here also.

You’ll come to discover there are a lot more users and user reviews for hotels abroad. I cannot believe that you put Priceline on your recommended list. They have an impossible, in fact not reachable, customer service or any phone or online service, if you want to cancel. I have been trying for many days to understand their cancellation reference number and to reach anyone to make a cancellation. They make it impossible for you to cancel. As the competition heats up between travel sites, everyone's coming out with new booking, reviews, and rewards tools to win your trust — and transaction. But which ones make your life easier? We name a few that solve common travel problems in a way other, better-marketed websites don't.

Flash-sale clubs The problem: Sure, the discounts on sites like Jetsetter and LivingSocial are solid (50 percent off is common), but how good are the actual properties?

The fix: Incorporate real-world ratings. A year ago, TripAdvisor launched an invitation-only sale site, SniqueAway, that only promotes hotels with a minimum four-out-of-five-star TripAdvisor user rating. Each week, three new hotels are typically offered at discounts of up to 65 percent. A recent example: The Restoration on King, a luxury hotel in Charleston, S.C., had rooms at $189 a night, up to 43 percent off regular rates.

Customized search The problem: You trust your friends' opinions on restaurants, hotels, shops, and more. So what are their favorites and how can you find them easily?

The fix: Enable like-minded linking. One-year-old Hotpot, by Google, is a mapping tool that combines the best of Yelp, Facebook, and Foursquare. Rate the places you've recently visited on a scale of one to five, and then invite your friends to do the same. When you next trawl Google, the site uses your network as a filter, retrieving related results from the Web and putting the most relevant recommendations first.

Getting trustworthy travel advice The problem: Reviews are only as useful as the users who generate them. And who knows who they are?

The fix: Amp up reviewer transparency. The dozen-year-old travel community IgoUgo isn't new — and its 1 million user reviews don't come close to TripAdvisor's 35 million — but a new interface emphasizes trustworthiness. Reviews are written only by IgoUgo members (with clickable profiles) or come from larger online travel agents such as sister site Travelocity, which allows posts only by hotel guests, not anonymous commenters.

And no, consumer reviews don’t solve it. I recently stayed at a top rated hotel on Trip Advisor that was one of the worst customer service experiences I’ve had in the last year. And given that I spent about 30 weeks in hotels in the last year, that’s saying something. Among other issues, the hotel-in-question “accidentally” charged me nearly $700 mid-stay, let alone my final bill was supposed to be under $200. It took hours out of each day to resolve. The hotel wound up refunding us, but the trip was already ruined.

That’s what makes booking a hotel online such a risky proposition: A bad flight you can forget, but a hotel necessarily sticks with you during a trip, making or breaking it. A good flight is more of a commodity product, defined by price and route and, of course, being on time the day of travel. And aisle seat is an aisle seat, and a window seat is a window seat. There’s a shared vernacular of what things mean for that period in the sky, even across international carriers. On a domestic flight in China, the flight attendants required that everyone do calisthenics half way through to prevent bloodclots, but we still got the same beverage cart, same reclining seats, same overhead bins and same bathrooms I’d get on a United flight to New York

With hotels there are a host of intangible variables, and that makes booking a core problem of trust. I’ve stayed in more than 20 hotels in the last year. In almost all cases, a personal recommendation from someone I trust has scored me the best experience, anything booked online or with an agent has been acceptable to bad—no matter what the photos looked like online.

Finally, one site seems to have solved a piece of the problem: Jetsetter . Yes it’s part of the much-written-about Gilt Groupe . But while most of the group-buying trend is about convenience and saving money, for me Jetsetter actually solves a core problem. Not only do a get a great discount on top properties, this is the first online travel site where I actually trust the recommendations.

While mass-market travel sites compete on bigger inventory and “virtual room tours,” Jetsetter comes the closest to replicating what happens in the real world: They are picky. They curate the best properties. The pictures are visually stunning enough that browsing the site is actually fun. (Have you ever said that about, say, Hotels.com?) Someone has clearly stayed at each property and writes up the unvarnished good and the unvarnished bad. And of course, being part of Gilt, it has great deals. Most the hotels I have looked at or booked through Jetsetter hovered around or under $200 a night for some amazing $300-$400/night properties.

So curating itself is a big part of why I trust Jetsetter, but equally as important is that the site, so far, curates incredibly well, at least according to my preferences. Just using the site a few months, Jetsetter has offered specials by three of my all-time favorite hotels: The Opposite House in Beijing (above), The Sonoma Mission Inn in Wine Country and The Royal Palms in Phoenix. It’s as if the site is reading my mind—the pinnacle of a good user experience.

I’ve stayed at all three of these hotels and the room, food, customer service and amenities were all impeccable. I was already planning to go back to the Opposite House in May, but thanks to Jetsetter I got a great rate. As for The Somona Mission Inn and the Royal Palms, I had stayed at both in the last few years as part of speaking gigs where my rate was included in my fee. I never thought go back, even though I enjoyed the experience because the rates were out of my normal writer-salary price range. But the Sonoma Mission Inn for less than $200 a night is suddenly a do-able weekend getaway. What’s more: Because Jetsetter has picked three of the best hotels out of the 40 or so I’ve stayed at in the past few years, I just trust its recommendation on nearly any property they show me in a way that I don’t on any other site. Like a friend, I feel like we have the same taste.

The clear problem here is scale. Right now, Jetsetter can’t solve all my travel problems because of what makes them great: They are picky and rely on special sales. It’s a site that I may only book through a few times a year mostly for weird cases when their specials happen to overlap with my schedule (in the case of the Opposite House) or when I have a week off for a Holiday and want to go somewhere but don’t quite know where (in the case of the Sonoma Mission Inn) or if I know I need to get to, say, New York for work at some point, but exactly when is flexible.

A Jetsetter customer doesn’t have to spend a lot—most of these properties aren’t much more than a basic Marriott or Hilton Express and what you get is frequently over-the-top amazing. But you do have to be a frequent, spontaneous or somewhat random traveler to use the site consistently.

My fear is that Jetsetter will try to be a site for everyone, instead of continuing to do what it has done so well: Curate, editorialize and get stellar deals on truly amazing properties. This is the difference between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0—the market is big enough you don’t have to be all things to all people, you can serve a part of the population better than anyone else and win. I would rather the site didn’t solve all of my travel problems, and solve a few this well than become a high-end Hotels.com for the masses.

Please, Jetsetter, don’t follow the classic Web playbook and grow so big you strangle something great.
