figueres day trip

Planning a Figueres day trip from Barcelona is one of the best choices you can make when deciding where to visit from Spain’s second-largest city.

Though Barcelona day trip destinations like Montserrat and even Girona often outshine this petite Catalonian gem, Figueres is an excellent place to explore for those who want to experience a smaller city or are fans of the famed surrealist Salvador Dalí.

sFigueres is small in size but nevertheless a lovely city to visit and has a lot to offer tourists. From a number of interesting historic sites and museums to the countless tributes and allusions to Dalí, Figueres is a great destination for all those who choose to visit.

There are lots of things to do in Figueres, however, it’s recommended that you at least have some interest in Salvador Dalí before planning a trip to this city. As the artist’s hometown, there are lots of sites and things to do that have to do with the surrealist.

If this doesn’t deter you and you’re still keen to plan a day trip to Figueres from Barcelona, then look no further. Here I’ll outline how to get the most out of this small city in just one day.

Table of Contents

How to Get from Barcelona to Figueres

Figueres is located about 140 kilometres north of Barcelona and is actually situated quite close to the French border. Because of its proximity to the Catalonian capital, there are lots of ways that potential visitors can get to Figueres for a day that will suit almost all travellers needs and styles.

By Organised Tour

If you want to take the stress of route planning and itinerary mapping out of your trip from Barcelona to Figueres, then going on an organised tour from Barcelona is a great idea for you. There are countless options to choose from that will suit all kinds of travellers.

This full-day tour or this full-day tour will pick you up from Barcelona before taking you to Figueres, the coastal town of Cadaqués along with some other highlights of the Costa Brava.

Alternatively, if you aren’t interested in the Costa Brava but want to see more than just Figueres on your day out, this all-day tour will first take you to the lovely city of Girona before heading onto Figueres.

Though I would honestly recommend spending at least 2 days in Girona , this can be a good option for those who don’t have a lot of time but also want to see as much of Catalonia as possible.

Another option is this private tour if you prefer to not join an organised group.

Outside the Dali Museum in Figueres

If an organised tour isn’t for you, then getting to Figueres by car is one of the best options out there – especially if you’re keen to stop at the Castell de Sant Ferran at the beginning of your Figueres day trip.

You can reach Figueres in about 1.5 hours driving from Barcelona meaning that it is definitely an accessible distance for a day trip. Driving yourself also gives you the flexibility to tailor your own itinerary rather than having to be at the whim of a tour or bus and train timetables.

For instance, if you don’t care to visit the Castell de Sant Ferran, you can opt to spend the morning in the beautiful town of Besalú before heading onto Figueres and exploring the Dalí museum. Or you can head to the Costa Brava on your way back to Barcelona. The options are really endless.

If you need to rent a car while visiting Catalonia or for your day trip to Figueres, then consider booking through Rentalcars.com to find great deals across many major car rental companies.

Walls of Castell de Sant Ferran

If you don’t want to rent a car then going by train is an excellent option and is going to be the quickest way to get there. There are numerous connections between the two cities that leave at all different times throughout the day, so you are sure to find something that fits your schedule.

The journey time will take just under an hour and you can book train tickets online in advance . In fact, this is recommended as it can be a lot more affordable than if you book on the day of or at the train station.

Another option for getting to Figueres from Barcelona is by bus, however, it isn’t the best choice if you want to go independently. This is mostly because it is the longest option and can take over two hours to get from Barcelona to Figueres.

Buses also aren’t as frequent as trains and will end up costing roughly the same amount as a train ticket anyway. So if you want to use public transport then I would recommend taking the train to Figueres.

Figueres Day Trip Itinerary

If you’re only interested in visiting the Dalí museum and don’t care to head to the first stop on this itinerary (the Castell de Sant Ferran), then consider heading to the town of Besalú and/or Banyoles Lake before visiting Figueres in the afternoon.

This is easier to do if you have your own vehicle, but it can be a great way to visit some sites that many don’t take the time to in Catalonia.

Castell de Sant Ferran

The first stop on this itinerary is at the Castell de Sant Ferran. This 18th-century castle is located a bit outside of the Figueres centre and is really worth visiting if you want to explore a fascinating castle with very few other visitors. In fact, I believe if this castle were situated closer to Barcelona, it would be packed with tourists far more than it already is.

The castle was used for the military when it was originally constructed in the mid-18th Century. Now, it has been historically restored and operates as a museum.

The castle is open for visitors at varying hours throughout the year, so be sure to check when it is open before you plan to visit. Note that it is closed on Mondays except during the summer season. You should plan to spend at least an hour here.

Castell de Sant Ferran

After spending time exploring the castle, it’s time to head into the beautiful city centre of Figueres and wander down the main thoroughfare of the city – La Rambla.

This is not to be confused with La Rambla in Barcelona, in fact, you will likely notice that major streets in the vast majority of Catalonian towns and cities are called La Rambla. It simply means “the boulevard” in English.

We visited Figueres in the winter months just ahead of Christmas and this is where the main Christmas market was set up. There are lots of shops and cafes lining the street where you can pop into and spend some time people-watching.

You can also spot the Dalí portrait on La Rambla which is as unique as the eponymous artist. Basically, it is a spread out portrait of Dalí on the ground that is then reflected in a mirrored pillar that looms over it. It’s quite interesting.

Christmas market on La Rambla in Figueres

Església de Sant Pere

Moving more into the old town (and make sure you take the time to wander around a bit in the beautiful side streets), you will inevitably find your way to the imposing Església de Sant Pere or Saint Peter’s Church.

This is the main church in Figueres and it is a gorgeous building. It is also the church where, you guessed it, Salvador Dalí was baptised! There are very few stops on this Figueres itinerary that don’t involve Dalí and this Church is not one of them.

Església de Sant Pere

Monumento a Salvador Dalí

Just a bit further down from the Church and not far from the Dalí museum is the interesting Monument a Salvador Dalí – or the Salvador Dalí Monument.

This is not to be confused with the portrait of Dalí located on La Rambla, however, as this monument is a sculpture designed by Dalí himself and not a monument of Salvador Dalí. Nevertheless, this is another great testament to this influential surrealist and is very much worth spotting out when in Figueres.

Monumento a Salvador Dalí

Now that you’ve seen quite a number of incredible sites in Figueres, it’s likely that you’ve worked up quite an appetite. Lunch is the biggest meal of the day in Spain and there are countless great restaurants in the Figueres where you can get some delicious, local food at reasonable prices.

If you’re visiting on a weekday, have a look for a place offering a menú del día or a daily menu where you can get a starter, main, dessert and drink all at an affordable set price. Even if you happen to be in Figueres on a weekend or public holiday, there are still countless options available for lunch.

We ate at the delicious La Taverna del Barri Vell and had a wonderful meal for a reasonable price – especially considering the atmosphere and the portion sizes!

Fideua from La Taverna del Barri Vell

Museu del Joguet de Catalunya

After you’ve eaten lunch, take the time to head to one of Figueres’ famous museums – the Museu del Joguet de Catalunya or the Toy Museum of Catalonia.

This is an especially good place to visit if you’re travelling with children. Here you will see a number of different displays of toys and games from different eras throughout history.

The museum is open from Tuesday through Saturday (it is closed on Sunday and Monday) and general entry is €7 per person. There are reduced prices available for students, seniors etc.

Museu del Joguet de Catalunya

Teatré-Museu Dalí

Make the final stop of your day a visit to the top attraction in the town – the Dalí Theatre-Museum. The reason I list this museum as the final stop and not an earlier one is that, in our experience, the museum is a lot less busy in the afternoon when a lot of organised tour groups have left the city already.

This museum is something that needs to be entered with an open mind, as it was put together by Dalí himself and very much seems like that.

Filled with fascinating and interesting artwork (some that involve coins to be inserted so that they move and do bizarre things), you do need to devote a bit of time to exploring this bizarre treasure trove of this influential modern artist. Plan to spend about 1.5-2 hours here.

Entry into the museum is on the pricier end at €17 per person for general entry. There are reduced prices available for those who qualify and you can purchase tickets online in advance.

If you would like some guidance when visiting the Dalí museum, then this guided tour of the Teatré-Museu Dalí will help you make the most of your visit to the museum. Alternatively, this small-group tour also includes a walking tour of Figueres as well as a guided visit to the Teatré-Museu Dalí.

Inside the Dali Museum

Planning a Figueres day trip from Barcelona is one of the best places you can visit from the Catalonian capital. Especially for fans of modern art and the surrealist movement, Figueres makes for an excellent day out from the hustle and bustle of Barcelona.

Thank you for your post! I had thought about checking out Girona in the morning (although I know it’s worth a few days, we don’t more time to spend this trip) and the Dali Museum in the afternoon. But it’s good to know there is plenty to fill a day in Figueres if we opt for that. It’s certainly the less complicated option, in terms of booking trains.

We will also be visiting in December close to the holidays. Do you find the museum to be fairly busy/crowded that time of year?

Hi Erika – the museum may be a bit crowded close to the holidays but they do limit entry so it’s not too packed inside. You can book your tickets in advance if you’re concerned about this 🙂

What I Wish I’d Known Before Spending A Day in Figueres Spain

Posted on Published: January 15, 2020  - Last updated: February 26, 2024

Categories Europe , Honest Reviews , Spain

Figueres is an interesting Spanish city to visit to say the least. It’s by no means the prettiest, or the cutest, Spanish city I’ve seen ( like Girona Spain views !).

There’s also really only two things to do in Figueres : visit The Dalí Museum and The Castell De Sant Ferran. But ! if you’re interested in Salvador Dalí, then a day trip to Figueres Spain is a must-do!

If you aren’t such a huge Dalí fan, then I’d read my honest review about Figueres Spain before booking train tickets to visit. This is what I wish I’d known before spending a day in Figueres Spain…

Psst! This blog post contains affiliate links in it which sends me a bit of extra money if you use them… at no extra cost to you!

Where Is Figueres Spain?

Figueres Spain is in the province of Girona in Catalonia Spain. It’s about 137 km away from Barcelona (about an hour and a half drive). It’s also about 50 minutes passed Girona, the city, which is a must visit from Barcelona !

Figueres Spain has easy day trip potential from both Barcelona and the South of France and you don’t really need to spend any longer in this Spanish city than one day. Figueres is actually closer to the South of France than it is to Barcelona. This means that it actually has a very strong French speaking community in Figueres.

It’s also in the Catalonian region in Spain which means they speak primarily Catalan over Spanish.

How To Get From Barcelona To Figueres

Visiting Figueres from Barcelona is a very easy day trip to do. There are four ways to get from Barcelona to Figueres: train, bus, drive, or go on an organized tour.

The easiest way to get from Barcelona to Figueres is to take the train. It’s relatively cheap and the train leaves a few times throughout the day. The train also isn’t much longer than driving, just under an hour. Once you arrive in Figueres, the train station is located a short walk from the city centre.

The cheapest but longest option to is to take the bus from Barcelona to Figueres.

You can also rent a car and drive to Figueres, but don’t forget about parking once you arrive and dealing with driving in a foreign country.

Finally, if you don’t want to deal with transportation and getting lost in a new city, you can also go on an organized tour from Barcelona to Figueres . It’s typically the most expensive option, but it’s also the most stress free.

Need A Place To Stay? Figueres Hotel Recommendations

I didn’t stay overnight in Figueres, we went back to Barcelona. But if you’re looking to enjoy some of the nightlife, book a place to stay the night in Figueres Spain. Here are some recommendations I found in the city centre.

Apartment With Views & Location : The Museum Apartments is next door to the Dali Museum – it doesn’t get better than that! You can book a room with either a private terrace, patio, or balcony or a view! This is also ideal if you’re travelling with family or friends, rooms can sleep up to 7 people! See room rates & availability .

Hotel : If you’re looking for a more classic hotel, stay at the Duran Hotel in Figueres Spain. You also have the Duran restaurant downstairs where Dali himself used to eat! See room rates & availability .

What Is Figueres Known For? Connection To Salvador Dalí

The main thing figueres is known for is being the birthplace of Salvador Dalí. He wasn’t just born there though, he lived and breathed Figueres. He lived there with his wife and was buried there.

But today, it’s mainly known for the museum that Dalí opened up in Figueres. It’s also where he set up his museum – The Dalí Theatre-Museum – with the largest collection of his work.

PSA: Only Visit If You’re Interested in Salvador Dalí

I can’t stress this enough! If you visit Figueres with this in mind, then you won’t be disappointed. There are a few other museums you can visit, but realistically, how many museums can you visit in one day?

There’s also a fortress on the edge of town which is interesting, don’t get me wrong, but again, it’s nothing that you can’t see in other European cities (shoutout to Namur and Dinant in Belgium ).

And other than that… the rest is all focused around Salvador Dalí.

Dalí Attractions To See in Figueres

There are the two main Figueres Spain Dalí museums to visit, but there are also some hidden gems that you should see.

The Dalí Theatre-Museum is the main attraction that you should be going to Figueres for. It’s the main museum that’s really unique to the town. Of course, you can find Dalí originals elsewhere, but this is one of the largest collections. The museum itself is also a Dalí masterpiece, it was designed specifically to showcase his work.

You can also visit the Dalí Jewels Museums to see a collection of the jewellery he designed. Attached to the museum (in the red part of the building) is where Gala (his wife) and Dalí lived. Make sure to find the plaque next to the tower it’ll answer all your questions about the building (like why there are eggs on top of it).

Figueres isn’t just where Dalí lived as an adult, if you walk a bit further down Las Ramblas you can see his childhood home where Dalí lived until he was 12. On the way there’s a cool monument to Dalí in the centre of Las Ramblas that you shouldn’t miss!

Tips For Visiting The Figueres Spain Dalí Museum

As I said, the Dalí Theatre-Museum is the main attraction in Figueres Spain and because of that, it’s PACKED. I swear the town feels like a ghost town until you walk inside and realize this is where everyone is.

You’d think the number of people they let inside would be more controlled because you have to buy a timed ticket. This isn’t the case. It’s absolute chaos inside (even during low season), most of the rooms and passageways are small and there are just too many people to fit.

Unfortunately, this made the museum a bit less enjoyable for us because we weren’t used to this many people. If you want to try to avoid the chaos don’t book a morning ticket. The museum was busy all day, but I noticed the morning was completely sold out. So if you want to try and avoid the crowds, book an afternoon time slot (or book a guided tour of the museum with a pre-booked ticket with Viator here ).

I also recommend grabbing a seat in the outdoor space of the museum (the first section in the centre). There are seats all along the wall. It’s a good way to get some space from everyone to be able to take your time appreciating all the detail in the space.

Tips For Visiting Figueres Spain Dalí Museum #2: Dalí Jewels

Dalí Jewels is another Figueres Spain Dalí museum to visit. It’s the complete opposite of the Dalí Theatre-Museum though. You don’t need timed entry and no one seems to visit, so it’s also way less crowded. You’re actually able to take your time admiring his precious jewels.

Heads up though, it’s quite dark inside the museum and getting inside is only a bit terrifying. You have to go through windowless revolving doors and for a second it becomes pitch black… but it’s worth it!

Tips For Buying Tickets To Figueres Spain Dalí Museum

If you’re interested in visiting both the Dalí Theatre-Museum and the Dalí Jewels, buy a combined ticket.

You can buy your tickets  online in advance  or at the door. If you need to go in the morning I recommend buying online because those are quicker to sell out. But, if you’re a student they offer discounted rates at the door that they don’t show you online.

You can also book tickets in advance with a guided tour through Viator here .

Tickets are timed for entry every 30 minutes. I recommend buying for 30 minutes before you think you’ll want to go (i.e. if you want to go at 3:00 buy for 2:30). You have the full 30 minutes from your ticket entry to go in but they won’t let you in before it. It was annoying when we arrived 15 minutes before our ticket entry time and had to wait outside in line.

In order to avoid some of the crowded chaos, I recommend arriving 15 minutes passed your entry time.  Everyone is arriving at the same time otherwise, and there’s always a line up to get in. Arriving 15 minutes later gives people time to get ahead of you, so hopefully, there will be fewer people when you get there.

Figueres Spain Things To Do Not Related To Dalí

There isn’t much else to do in Figueres Spain that isn’t connected to Salvador Dalí. There are a few other museums you can visit, or the second largest attraction in the city, The Castell De Sant Ferran.

Other Museums To Visit

There are so many museums aside from the Dalí-Theatre-Museum but there are three main recommendations. The  Toy Museum of Catalonia ,  Museu de l’Empordà   (art museum), and  Technical Museum of the Empordà .

I think they’re all very well done, but after visiting two Dalí museums, we were kind of museum-ed out for the day!

What To Do In Figueres? Visiting The Castell De Sant Ferran

When researching what to do in Figueres, the Castell de Sant Ferran was always suggested. It looks like it would be a lot further than it actually is so I originally didn’t think it was doable in a day. But the Castell de Sant Ferran only a 20-minute walk from the Dalí Theatre-Museum.

Other than exploring the grounds on your own, you can also go on a guided visit underground and to the exterior parts of the fortress (you have to  book in advance  for those tours though).

Our plan was to visit the Fortress in the afternoon, but unfortunately in the winter, it closes at 3:00 P.M. ( and Google isn’t aware of this ).

If this happens to you, it’s still worth walking up to the fortress. Even if it’s closed, you can still walk around the grounds, there’s a path that takes you all around the fortress. You can sort of peak inside, and you also get some skyline views of Figueres and the Province of Girona.

Tips For Spending A Day Figueres… What To Know

There are a few things that I wish that I’d known before I visited Figueres for the day. I was thrown off guard by quite a few things that I wasn’t expecting.

English is Useless!

Figueres is a 45-minute train ride from Barcelona, ( stopping at Girona along the way ). But, more tourists actually visit the city from France. How do I know that? Well, I noticed a lot more people were speaking French than Spanish or even Catalan, and NOT ONE person spoke English.

If you don’t know either French, Spanish, or Catalan (i.e. only English) it’s going to be very hard for you to get around here. This was a total shock to us. In every restaurant (even in the main tourist area), our English was useless and we had to resort to French (which is good because it could use the practice!). We only wanted to know if they accepted card and the employees had no idea what we were saying.

Don’t Trust Google When Visiting Figueres Spain!

Another thing to watch out for when visiting Figueres for the day are the opening hours. Because it’s not exactly a big city, Google isn’t on top of their game with their information.

Most stores have a 4-hour lunch break in the middle of the day from around 12:00 to 4:00 P.M.. But the bigger issue comes up when you’re visiting in the low season. Most attractions have different hours for fall, winter, and summer . Google won’t be aware of the change in hours so be sure to double-check the websites and not to rely on Google.

It’s Far From The Prettiest Spanish Town

On most day trips, once I’ve visited all the main attractions I’m able to fill my time photographing the more picturesque parts of town. Unfortunately, there isn’t much to see in Figueres Spain.

First off, the town is so small that you end up walking in a circle most of the time. There aren’t any hidden streets to discover or beautiful architecture to admire.

On my exploration of the city, I managed to find some nice fountains and a sculpture of Saint George! Plus make sure not to miss a really cool Salvador Dalí monument in the middle of Las Ramblas!

st.-george-legend-in-figueres

Not The Place To Come For Local Shopping

At the end of the day, I also usually like to check out the local shopping… from what I saw it was all bigger chain stores. I guess the city is so small that in the limited space they have they want the name brands.

If you’re looking for local shopping, you know, stores you can’t find back home (or even back in Barcelona), then don’t rely on Figueres for that. There were very limited boutique stores that I wanted to go into.

Where To Eat in Figueres Spain?

We managed to eat a lot of food on our day trip to Figueres. It was a good way to pass the time (because there isn’t much to do there and all the stores close in the afternoon).

In the main city centre you can stop at either Calid Café or El Cafito for a quick coffee break. We saw Calid Café serving a delicious Spanish style lunch but they understood the least amount of English out of anyone here, and they won’t start serving lunch a minute before their lunch break starts.

Lizarran For Lunch

After we tried to eat at Calid Café for lunch, we ended up at Lizarran for some traditional tapas. They serve pinxtos, the ones with the toothpicks.

It’s a fun scene because they announce when they bring out new pintxos and they’ll come around offering it to each table. You have to be careful here because the bill can really add up. You keep the toothpicks from each pintxos you take, they’re about €2.00 – €2.50 each.

I’d try a few tapas but also order a plate to fill up. You also have to order their patatas bravas – delicious!

Pau For Coffee/Tea Break

I love this place! It’s a bit out of the touristy zone but not too far out of the way. They have everything here from coffee and tea, alcohol, to simple (but tasty) sandwiches. Our favourite though was ordering Spanish hot chocolate and melindros (sponge cookies)!

thank you very much for your comments and pictures. i think i read that some other spots in Spain won't let you in past the time on your ticket so i'd be concerned about showing up 15 minutes late at the Dali museum.

Very interesting article with good insights. I will be staying in Figueres for three nights as a jumping off point for the Dali museum and environs, including Cadeques, Besalu, and Barcelona. Do you have a reliable taxi service to recommend? We will be in the center of town (Carrer Monturiol) and want a taxi to take us to Figueres Vilafont train station for a morning train to Barcelona--without being late. Thanks for any advice!

Tuesday 28th of February 2023

That sounds like a wonderful trip! Unfortunately, I don't have a taxi company that we used. When we visited Figures we walked to and from the train station to the city. Sorry I couldn't be more help

Really interesting but I think it's important to write that the majority of people are speaking Catalan, not French or Spanish.

Yes! I'll update the post with this info! Thanks!

It seems you missed the well known restaurant at Hotel Ampurdan. A different league from the ones you mention.

Wednesday 15th of December 2021

Thanks for your comment, I tried looking it up and and couldn't find anything about it.

Sunday 19th of January 2020

What a great guide to Figueres! I have to be honest, I haven't visited Spain outside of Barcelona and Malaga, so I was excited to read more about this interesting place. Fortunately, I'm a huge Dali fan, so it sounds like a great city for me! I also really appreciated your tips -- I ran into the same thing in Chile, where my English tended to be useless. It made me regret not brushing up on my Spanish before going (I took French in school and maybe one quarter of Spanish, but I wish I had taken more!).

Monday 20th of January 2020

You'd love Figueres then! Dali is everywhere and it's amazing! Oh no! It's always a shock when someone doesn't speak English but definitely makes you want to improve your other language skills.

Figueres is a small city in Catalonia that’s well known as the birth place of Salvador Dalí. Unsurprisingly, due Dali’s worldwide fame and strikingly bizarre art, Figueres is a very popular day trip from Barcelona.

And I didn’t want to miss Figueres either!

When I was in Catalonia, I took an independent Figueres day trip from Barcelona, and over all, I had a wonderful travel experience wandering the narrow lanes and the “trippy” Dali Museum.

As a traveler, I always like seeing smaller cities that are within reach of the larger, more popular international cities. I love big cities, of course, but at the same time, having a “break” from all the hustle and bustle is important to me.

Furthermore, I feel like diving into these gems is intellectually rewarding. In any European itinerary, a mixture of large and small cities offer a broader knowledge of the region as a whole.

No doubt, small cities are still worth the time and energy for a visit.

figueres day trip from barcelona is worth it for these lovely streets

Not going to lie, I even looked at real estate for Figueres on my day trip, because I thought the city was so cool! (And if you’re also guilty of checking out real estate in all the cities that you visit, I promise that you’re not alone).

So, if you’re planning a Figueres day trip from Barcelona, this post will help you with some good ideas and jumpstart the brainstorming process. Although small, even in comparison to nearby Girona, Figueres has a lot to unpack, and I want to make sure that you don’t miss anything or exhaust yourself like I, unfortunately, did.

Is Figueres Worth Visiting?

First I want to answer a question that I’ve seen on Google and Reddit. Is Figueres worth visiting at all? You paid a lot of money to visit Spain (and Catalonia), so you want to make sure that you’re getting a true “bang for your buck,” so to speak.

Now, personally, I think Figueres is worth visiting if you’re already spending ample time in Barcelona.

Barcelona has so much to see and do. No joke, I was overwhelmed reading about all the attractions in Barcelona, and already know that I need to plan my return to see even more sites. You want to give Barcelona the love it deserves as a city. It’s one of my favorites in all of Europe.

So. Do you have 5 days in Barcelona to spare? Sure, hop on a train to Figueres. On the other hand, are you only in Barcelona for one weekend? Then take your time enjoying the city and save Figueres for another trip.

figueres day trips are so much fun

A Figueres day trip from Barcelona is relatively easy if you have the time and plan in advance. I love traveling solo to Spain and never have any issues with their public transportation system.

You can opt to go to Figueres on a train, or reserve a spot on a guided tour if you prefer to have transportation taken care of for you. I will cover both options in this post.

figueres day trip from barcelona involves taking the train

Train from Barcelona to Figueres

For independent travelers, the easiest way (by far) to go from Barcelona to Figueres (and back again) is on a train.

Spain’s trains are frequent and comfortable. I have no complaints.

My suggestion is to board the high-speed AVE train to go to Figueres. Might tickets cost more? Sure, but you will reach Figueres is only 53 minutes, and your time is worth just as much, if not more, than your money. The train is direct. You can board the train at Barcelona Sants station or Passeig de Gracia.

Take care to validate your tickets at the machines if you don’t purchase them online with a barcode. Not validating your tickets will cost you. The fines are steep. Always, always validate the tickets.

figueres has gorgeous palm trees

Figueres has a small train station, especially in comparison to Barcelona. It is only a short (ten or fifteen minute) walk to the main attractions, including The Dali Museum.

One final piece of advice. If you’re independently traveling to Figueres, perhaps go to Girona on a different day. A lot of guided tours bundle these two cities together, which is totally fair if someone else is doing all the driving, but as an independent traveler, visiting both cities in one day turned out to be a lot running around and exhaustion.

Of course, I don’t regret visiting either place, but I do wish I had another day built into my trip.

exploring spain's museums alone like the dali museum is a wonderful way to pass the time

A Guided Tour to Figueres

A Figueres day trip from Barcelona isn’t challenging, but travel takes up a lot of “mental battery.”

So, if you don’t want to travel to Figueres on your own, then you have nothing to fear, because plenty of guided tours exist that will take you right to the town. Keep in mind that there are a lot of tours available, so it’s important to do your own research ahead of time. Reviews are important.

To help you, I’ve listed a couple of options for you.

peace and quiet in the dali museum

Options for a Guided Day Trip to Figueres From Barcelona

  • Girona, Figueres and Dali Museum Day Trip: This in-depth and fully guided tour takes over 11 hours! Perfect for travelers who not only want time in Figueres, but Girona too!
  • Girona and Dali Museum Small Group Tour:  Girona is another wonderful small city that is usually paired with Figueres. This small guided tour will take you to the Dali Museum, as well as the best sites in Girona. A two-for-one deal!
  • Immersive Dali Tour: If you want to learn all about Dali, this organized day trip not only takes you to Figueres, but also includes excursions to Port Lligat and Cadaques.

What to See and Do in Figueres

Taking a Figueres day trip from Barcelona will obviously take up a chunk of your time. So what exactly is there to see and do in Figueres?

Honestly, you will find a surprising amount of attractions in this small city that will keep you entertained for a few hours, especially if you take your time studying the art in the Dali Museum.

As a final note, I sadly didn’t have time to see Castell de Sant Ferran , which is a gorgeous castle set in the hills on the outskirts of Figueres. If you have more time, definitely check it out! It looks lovely!

dali's childhood home in figueres

Casa Natal de Salvador Dalí

If you’re very interested in Salvador Dali, be sure to swing by his childhood home right here in Figueres. It’s a beautiful building, and you can read a little plaque with some descriptions about Dali and his family.

Keep in mind, though, that this is a fast photo stop. You cannot enter the building itself. Still cool to see, though.

day trip to figueres from barcelona needs to include the dali museum

The Dali Theatre Museum

Without a doubt, the Dali Theatre Museum is the most popular and important attraction in all of Figueres. The incredible collection of Dali works is inside a municipal theater that was destroyed in the Spanish Civil War. Dali wanted to create a museum from its ruins, and boy, what a surrealist adventure this museum is!

I loved wandering through all the rooms, especially the Mae West Exhibit. The museum was crowded, but if I had more time, I could’ve easily spent well over two hours wandering from room to room, ogling at the bizarre (and fun) imaginative Dali pieces.

Just this museum alone makes a Figueres day trip from Barcelona well worth your effort.

dali's clocks are a reason to take a figueres day trip from barcelona

As far as tips go, make sure to book your ticket in advance for the Dali Museum, especially during peak periods and holidays. I cannot stress this enough.

Time slots sell out and fast. You don’t want to go to the museum and then not see anything inside. For example, the museum actually lets visitors inside according to the time stamped on their ticket, so if the next available time isn’t for another five hours, then you are out of luck, my friend.

Also pack your patience. As a popular museum, crowds flock to the Dali museum, and not all tourists are polite. Do your best to keep your distance from big groups to optimize the experience, as well as visit the museum early or late in the day to avoid the bulk of day trippers.

gorgeous church tower in figueres

Església de Sant Pere

This gorgeous church, which is located right in the heart of Figueres, is where Salvador Dali was baptized. Definitely worth a visit if you have the time to spare.

Feel free to wander inside the church if you need respite from the hustle and bustle of the nearby museum.

la rambla in figueres

La Rambla

You’ve probably heard of La Rambla in Barcelona. Believe it or not, this street in Figueres is quite similar to its much more famous namesake! This pedestrian boulevard is in the heart of the city center. Feel free to wander without worrying about a car honking at you to move. I didn’t have a chance to go inside the shops, but saw some cute and unique window displays that are worth your time and money.

figueres day trip from barcelona has lots of surprises

Other Museums in Figueres

Believe it or not, Figueres is home to some other museums in addition to the Dali Museum.

While Dali’s art collection is understandably the most popular in town, you should also check out the city’s smaller museums, too. For example, the Toy Museum of Catalonia  has three floors where you will find ancient toys and an extensive miniature railway that took eight years to build.

If you want even more Dalí, then you should check out Dalí Jewels Collection on your day trip to Figueres. The permanent collection is home to jewelry created by the artist himself.

dali monument in figueres is impressive

Plaça Gala i Salvador Dalí

This funky square, where the Dali Museum is located, is an attraction in and of itself.

Plaça Gala i Salvador Dalí  has a lot of unique statues, including a monument dedicated to the artist himself, so you’ll have a lot of opportunities to snap pictures. I always appreciate public art in addition to exhibits in art museums.

And while not an attraction, the people-watching in this square is pretty entertaining too. After all, this is where people wait in line to enter into the Dali Museum.

checking out bakeries in figueres spain

Tapas & Treats

Figueres has a lot of yummy treats available for visitors. I took a peak in some of the bakeries, and my stomach was grumbling at the scrumptious window displays of cupcakes and chocolates.

After sightseeing inside the Dali Museum, feel free to stop and eat. And if it’s a beautiful day, enjoy some tapas in the open squares.

figueres is absolutely gorgeous

Believe it or not, Figueres has some unique street art if you know where to look for it. I felt very safe exploring Figueres in the afternoon, so I see absolutely no harm in “getting lost” and discovering some fantastic street art on your own.

Like many other European cities, street art adds splashes of color that make for some stunning photography. Don’t forget to bring your camera.

A Figueres day trip from Barcelona might include a lot of sites, but don’t forget to take even thirty minutes to explore the town without an agenda.

Barcelona to Figueres: A Dali-Inspired Day Trip

For those who are fans of all things unusual, quirky, and downright weird when it comes to artworks, a visit to the town of Figueres from Barcelona is an absolute must.

Barcelona to Figueres: A Dali-Inspired Day Trip and things to know before visiting from the Catalonia capital of Barcelona, Spain

Easily one of the top excursions from the Catalonian Capital among visitors to the region, once in Figueres you’ll soon become enthralled by the charm of the town, not to mention the cultural attractions and many cafés of this fairly sleepy settlement.

Here’s your ultimate guide on taking a day trip from Barcelona to Figueres , including insider tips and the best tours to the area!

A Free & Self-Guided Figueres Walking Tour (& Dali Tour) in Catalonia, North East Spain

Introducing Figueres: The Spanish birthplace of Dalí

Teatro museo dalí, sant ferran castle, museu del joguet de catalunya, església de sant pere, explore the attractions of the town on a self-guided walking tour, how far is figueres from barcelona how to travel from barcelona to figueres, from barcelona: girona, figueres and dalí museum day tour, girona and figueres full-day tour with hotel pick up, from barcelona: figueres 5-hour dalí museum tour, salvador dalí tour from barcelona with hotel pick up, barcelona: full-day costa brava and dalí museum tour, enjoyed reading this guide on taking a day trip from barcelona to figueres pin this article now, read it again later:.

Situated just half an hour from the Spanish border with France, Figueres has its own distinctly unique vibe. After all, though the birthplace of Dalí is still technically situated in Spain, I soon found the weather  (as well as other nuanced details) to be entirely different from those of other nearby destinations, such as the Catalonian capital city of Barcelona.

Figueres itself is nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenées mountains, a magnificent landscape that has long been associated with fantastic castles, and of course, as being Cathar Country.

Easily explored over the course of a day or two (more on that later), you can’t go wrong by dedicating at least a day or two to exploring all that this small town of just under 50,000 residents has to offer.

Barcelona to Figueres: A Dali-Inspired Day Trip and things to know before visiting from the Catalonia capital of Barcelona, Spain

Top things to see and do in Figueres

Hands down, the number one thing to do in Figueres is the Dalí Theatre-Museum. Situated close to the church and in the very heart of the old town, where the maze of cobbled lanes and little brasseries are largely pedestrianised, this complex of buildings is sure to surprise and amaze you in equal measure.

If you’re not taking a guided tour to Figueres, then be sure to book your tickets in advance (full details here) as the queues to purchase entrance tickets can soon become hours long!

Presiding high above the rest of the town (in a position which once limited the way in which Figueres could expand), Sant Ferran Castle is one of the best-preserved 18th-century forts in the entirety of Europe. And at a cost of just €3,50 to enter (and even less for those with concessions), the quality of the experience is well worth the nominal fee!

Castell de Sant Ferran, Spain

One of the more whimsical things to do in Figueres during your visit to the town would be a trip inside the toy museum. A trip down memory lane for some, this fantastic cultural space boasts a collection of over 4000 pieces, with some toys dating as far back as 3000 BCE!

One of the most beautiful Romanesque churches I’ve been lucky enough to see on my travels can be found in Figueres, in the form of Saint Peter. Situated steps away from the Dalí Theatre-Museum, this church dates back to the 14th-century, though its roots date back several centuries prior.

If you’re looking to enjoy the best of Figueres, then my free walking tour will show you all of the main attractions the town has to offer over the course of a few hours. See the full walking itinerary here.

Casa natal de Salvador Dali, Figueres, Spain

Since Figueres is a little bit further away from Barcelona than some of the other day trips you can take from the city, I recommend visiting for one of three reasons; firstly , if you’re an art lover and a fan of Dalí, then this is an absolute must, next , if you’re en route to elsewhere (i.e. into the Pyrenées) then a stop here makes sense, and finally , if you enjoy slow travel like myself, then be sure to book an overnight stay in the town!

To visit the town as a day trip to Barcelona, you’ll need to set aside an entire day of your trip. The train journey takes just shy of two hours each way, and the cost of a ticket is around €10 each way. You can check ticket prices, times, and book them in advance here.

For those who love independent travel and seeing the attractions of a city at their own pace, taking a self-guided excursion from Barcelona is the best option. This way, you can enjoy all of the Figueres attractions at your own pace, not to mention the fact that you can return later or earlier depending on how much you wish to see!

A Free & Self-Guided Figueres Walking Tour (& Dali Tour) in Catalonia, North East Spain

Figueres day tours, trips & excursions from Barcelona

Of course, if you’re looking for a stress-free way to enjoy the Dalí Theatre-Museum as a day trip from Barcelona , then a guided day trip or excursion from the city is an absolute must. For those looking to see the best of Figueres in one day, then there are several tours and options available;

If you wish to see both Girona and Figueres, as well as the Dalí Museum, then this tour from Barcelona packs plenty into the 11-hour excursion. As well as a visit to the medieval town of Girona (where some of Game of Thrones was filmed), this excursion includes a guided walking tour of Girona, as well as fast-track entrance into the Dalí Museum. Check prices and availability here.

For those who are looking to visit both Girona and Figueres as a day trip from Barcelona, then this guided tour also includes a hotel pick up option. The tour lasts for eight hours and includes highlights such as the historic sites of Girona, as well as Figueres (i.e. the birthplace of Dalí) .

Groups are capped at 8, so as to enhance the personalised experience. Please note that, unlike the above ticket, this ticket does not include entry into the Dalí museum. Check prices and availability here.

If you’re short on time, then this half-day tour from Barcelona may well be the excursion for you. Unlike the above tours (which also visit Girona) , this day trip is focused solely on Figueres. Included in the visit is a guide, hotel pick up, high-speed train tickets, and admission to the Dalí Museum. Check prices and availability here.

If you’re looking to see a little more Dalí then simply Figueres, then this tour from Barcelona is for you. On this full-day trip, you’ll soon discover the ‘golden triangle’ of Dalí. Included is a visit to Figueres, a trip to the picturesque village of Cadaqués, and the fishing community of  Portlligat.  Check prices and availability here.

As well as a trip from Barcelona to Figueres, this tour from the Catalonian capital offers the chance to enjoy some of the prettiest ports and fishing villages that the Costa Brava has to offer.

Taking place over eleven hours, highlights of the excursion include the medieval village of Pals, the quaint village of Calella de Palafrugell, and of course, a visit to Figueres. Check prices and availability here

A day trip from Barcelona: Girona and Figueres

Last updated: January 16, 2019 . Written by Laurence Norah - 2 Comments

When I was in Barcelona I was offered the opportunity by the nice folk at Barcelona Tourism and the Catalunya Bus Turistique to take a day trip. A whole variety of destinations were on offer, but I chose the tour that went to the pretty looking towns of Girona and Figueras.

I mostly chose this tour because Figueras was the home of Dali, and is where the museum that he put together to house his works can be found. The museum also happens to be where he’s buried. Being a fan of Dali, I was keen to see what a museum created by him might look like.

Generally, I’m not really a tremendous fan of your standard coach tour. This is largely due to memories from my childhood of the odd bus tour to seaside towns with my Mum and funny smelling old people. Weird how that can put you off. Plus there’s something about being part of a managed group that just, well, doesn’t work so well for me.

On the plus side, a tour like this is a handy way to see a fair amount of stuff in a short amount of time, with lots of information thrown in to boot. And this one was no exception. Our guide, who chatted to us as we drove between destinations kept us entertained and informed with stories of the Catalonian regions admittedly fascinating history, as well as with titbits about both Girona and Figueres. He was also very good at shutting up the noisy crowd at the front of the bus. All round, a jolly chap.

The bus ride from Barcelona to Girona, the first stop, was about an hour, and the view along the Costa Brava coastline was very pretty from the windows, with the sound of our guide burbling away happily in the background. The hour flashed by in comfort, and it wasn’t long before we were arriving in Girona itself, where we set off on a guided walking tour of the highlights.

A quick tour of Girona

Girona back streets

I knew essentially nothing about Girona before I got there. I quickly learnt that it’s one of those cities, like so many in Europe, that has had its fair share of conquerors, rulers and invaders. Everyone from the Romans to the French have had a go at conquering the place, with an impressive 25 sieges to date. Presumably your average Gironian back in the day was fairly au fait with basic siege warfare tactics. The overall result of all of this is a town that consists of a fascinating pile of cultural collisions.

These days the only sieges the locals have to deal with are the army of tourists, of which we were but a small bastion. Our guide whisked us around the main highlights, including the crumbly old Jewish quarter, the spectacular cathedral, the Arabian baths, the colourful river frontage, the statue of the lion that you have to kiss for luck (and, presumably, to also contract a variety of fascinating diseases from other lucky folk) and myriad winding back streets. Our brains were filled with all manner of information, most of which I failed to heed as I was too busy glued to my camera’s viewfinder.

Girona church

Because Girona is, if it’s anything, a magnificently pretty place, and if you’re obsessive about trying to capture beauty and bottle it, then it’s the sort of place you might find yourself being excited about. As I was. We finished our time there with a rather fine lunch (Spanish food is both excellent and great value), before heading back to the bus.

In conclusion for this part of the tour, we saw just enough of Girona to get a taste of the place, but I’ll certainly be needing to go back.

For now though, let’s head on to Figueres.

Tourist kissing lion Girona

Figueres – it’s all about Dali!

The town of Figueres is a little further away from Barcelona, requiring another ninety minutes of coach action. Again, the tour guide burbled as the scenery flashed by, with the foothills of the mighty Pyrenees mountains hoving into view.

Before we knew it, we were arriving into Figueres, which is mostly famous for being the home of Dali, the worlds greatest surrealist artist. The main draw is the Dali Theatre and Museum, created by the artist, and home to the largest collection of his works, as well as the remains of the artist himself.

As it was designed by Dali, the whole museum can be treated as one of his pieces. There are giant eggs all over the place, a huge dome over the top of the main stage, and seriously weird stuff throughout. It was also possibly the busiest place I’ve ever visited. Clearly there are a lot of people with a passion for Dali. Or a lot of people on bus tours carefully checking off destinations. One of the two.

Dali museum Figueras

It was certainly an experience. The museum was fascinating, and I was able to see a lot of Dali’s work that I hadn’t previously been aware of, including some of his later styles.

Unfortunately, the incredible press of people meant that it wasn’t the worlds most enjoyable visit, and I have to admit to being a little glad it was over and not having to battle for elbow room. Vera and I escaped into the late afternoon rain and ate croissants instead. I would love to go back, perhaps at a quieter time of the year. If the TBEX people are reading this.. a late night private opening would be lovely. Thanks!

In conclusion

We managed to pack a great deal into a day that we would otherwise not have not done, and it certainly opened our eyes to what is available outside of Barcelona. If you’re on a tight schedule, and want to see some highlights and get some knowledge, a bus tour might be just for you.

Alternatively, you could roll your own experience, and grab a train from Barcelona out to Girona. It’ll take about an hour, too, and may give you more time to explore if that’s what you need. Whichever you choose, I can definitely recommend spending time in Girona. Also, If you’re a Dali fan, and can find a quiet time, then the museum is also totally worth the visit. But I do implore you to find a quiet time!

Girona houses river

Thanks to both Barcelona Tourism and the Catalunya Bus Turistique for providing us the opportunity to take in these experiences during our trip down to Barcelona. Whilst the trip was complimentary, all the thoughts above are entirely my own. Do share your experiences in the comments below!

Thanks for your message. This reminds me I need to update this post with some recommendations 🙂 In the meantime, we’re always happy to recommend the Take Walks tours, we’ve taken tours with them in cities around the world and always had a positive experience. Groups are kept to a manageable size and their guides are always good. You can see their tour here:
