St. Petersburg, FL Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit St. Petersburg is from March to May, when the weather is comfortably warm and a plethora of outdoor events make the city come alive. You'll find more affordable room rates from June to November, but the threat of hurricanes is imminent and the weather can often be scorching. The temperature cools down significantly for the winter months.

What You Need to Know

Dogs are welcome  Feel free to bring your four-legged friend when visiting St. Petersburg. The city features six dog parks, a lengthy dog beach at the  Fort de Soto Park  and a dog-friendly  Saturday Morning Market .

Theme parks are a short drive away  Don't fret – you can still enjoy Florida's thrilling theme parks while visiting St. Petersburg.  Busch Gardens  (near Tampa ) is about 30 miles northeast and  Walt Disney World  is about 70 miles northeast.

Enjoy the wildlife  The Sunshine City is home to an abundance of wildlife, so keep an eye out and enjoy the scenery. Dolphins are seen year-round, while manatees appear in the wintertime. Beachgoers should do the "stingray shuffle" as they wade into the surf to avoid stepping on buried stingrays. Plus, the city features the most diverse water bird colonies in North America.

Call before you go  Some attractions will close completely for major city events – such as the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in March – so you'll want to double check the attractions' hours before you visit.

How to Save Money in St. Petersburg, FL

Invest in a GO Card  If you plan on getting around the city by bus, you may want to use a reloadable GO Card. These can be purchased on the bus with exact change. Regular fares cost $2.25. You can also pay for fares with exact change.

Pick the right beach  Sunshine City features plenty of beaches but almost none of them offer free parking. Municipal lots, such as those offered by Treasure Island, often offer the best prices. If you'd rather not bring your own set of wheels, the Suncoast Beach Trolley is an inexpensive shuttle that runs between the area's beaches and offers connecting service to downtown.

Indulge in free events  The city hosts more than 1,000 events each year. Check the St. Petersburg Calendar to take advantage of the ones that are free while you're in town.

What to Eat

As a city on Florida's Gulf Coast, seafood is a must in Sunshine City. Make sure to visit 400 Beach Seafood and Tap House and The Maritana Grille (at The Don CeSar ) for exquisite seafood dishes like fresh oysters, coconut shrimp, tuna tartare and crispy calamari. And if you're not a fan of fishy food, there's plenty else in the city to eat as well. Beach Drive and Central Avenue feature alfresco dining. If you'd like a change of scenery, the Saturday Morning Market is a great place to pick up fresh produce, and food trucks all over the city offer fantastic street fare.

Getting Around St. Petersburg, FL

The best way to get around St. Petersburg is by car. The roads are easy to navigate and parking is inexpensive, except in downtown lots during sporting events. Within the downtown area, many attractions are within walking distance of one another, so if you're staying in the city, getting around by foot is another easy way to see St. Petersburg. You can also explore with the help of public transportation – buses and trolleys run throughout and the fare is relatively inexpensive.

To visit St. Petersburg, you can fly into St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE), located about 12 miles north of downtown, or larger Tampa International Airport (TPA), located about 20 miles northeast of downtown. Though buses run between St. Pete-Clearwater airport and the city, the travel time can be more than triple what it is by car. So, the most convenient way to reach St. Petersburg (from both airports) is by either renting a car or taking a cab.

Fort De Soto Park features 7 miles of waterfront that provides breathtaking views of the sunset.

VRBO rentals in St Petersburg are another popular option, especially with larger family gatherings. For some rentals, you can literally walk out your door into the action. This top-rated 2-bedroom VRBO rental is a favorite in the area for its walkability to all the St Pete shops and restaurants.

Downtown St Pete Pier

View from the St Pete Pier of downtown showing some of the most fun things to do in St. Petersburg - strolling by the water.

A visit to St Petersburg is only complete with spending some time at the iconic St Pete Pier. Close to the water’s edge of Tampa Bay, St Pete Pier is a bustling place thanks to its abundance of shops, restaurants, parks, and museums.

If you have the time and opportunity, you should visit the stunning waterfront because there are lots of events and activities to do there.

This glittering new facility on the city’s waterfront promises endless entertainment from frequent travelers to locals. The 26 gorgeous acres effortlessly blend Tampa Bay’s calm waters with the vivid greenery of the city’s parks to create the ideal location for strolling, biking, dining, jungle gyms, shopping, swimming, attending concerts, and more.

While the St Pete Pier has free admission, there is a fee to see the museums, as well as metered parking.

Visit the World Class Museums

I love museums and have spent countless hours in them. If you’re a museum fan, you definitely need to make this a priority on your St Pete vacation.

You’ll also want to check out my article about the  best museums in St Petersburg , which offers information on how to get free tickets.

Here is a short guide to some of my top favorite museums in the area.

Great Explorations Children’s Museum

Great explorations childrens museum photo of inside jungle gym

The Great Explorations Children’s Museum is an excellent place for kids to explore, learn and have fun. With its interactive exhibits, exciting activities, and engaging educational programs, it’s the perfect spot for younger visitors to get curious and engaged with the world around them.

The museum offers a broad range of topics that can be explored through hands-on learning. This is one of our favorite places to take to my toddler. Great Explorations Children’s Museum also has a separate area for babies and toddlers to play safely. Check out my article below on how locals can get free admission .

The Salvador Dali Museum

The Salvador Dali Museum in St Petersburg

The Salvador Dali Museum is a must-see when visiting St Petersburg. Not only does it boast an impressive permanent collection of Salvador Dali’s works, but it also offers visitors the chance to experience the surreal world of the artist. It features masterpieces from every stage of Dali’s career, allowing guests to gain a comprehensive understanding of his unique talent.

The Salvador Dali Museum itself is a work of art. Drive around back along the waterfront, and you’ll see what I mean. There is a beautiful garden and sitting area you can enjoy. Don’t miss the gift shop, where you can find unique gifts to take home. The Mahaffey Theater is located next door if you decide to stay for a show.

Plus, you are traveling with young children, one of the hidden gems in St Petersburg is Albe rt W hitted Park , directly behind the Dali Museum. It has beautiful views of the waterfront and it overlooks the airport. Kids can climb on the playground equipment designed to look like airplanes, while you enjoy watching the sailboats. There are also shaded gazebos for a picnic.

🤑 Pro Tip: There is metered parking along the water and sometimes easier to find rather than Central Avenue or Beach Drive.

James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art

The James Museum in St Petersburg

The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art is perhaps one of the most beautiful western art museums I’ve ever been to. From the time you enter the museum, you’ll be awed by the flawless layout with massive bronze sculptures of Native Americans and depictions of the old west.

Visitors can take part in many educational programs or even arrange guided excursions. I was surprised at how kid-friendly this museum was, offering classes and other things to do.

I also found some unique items in their gift shop, such as beautiful jewelry and kid’s trains, etc. It’s definitely well worth a visit to see this permanent collection of the old west.

Museum of the Arts & Crafts Movement

Museum of the Arts & Crafts Movement exterior

One of the newer museums in St Petersburg is the Museum of the Arts & Crafts Moment. This massive 40,000 square feet of gallery space has a retail store, an upscale café and restaurant, a children’s gallery, a theater, a graphic studio, and more!

Here you will see fine arts examples by Gustav Stickley, Frank Lloyd Wright, William Grueby, Newcomb Pottery, Charles Rohlfs, Margaret Patterson, Louis Sullivan, plus many other gifted women and craftsmen.

Beyond the artists, you will see a variety of original pieces from handmade furniture, pottery, tiles, lighting, photography, fine arts, textiles, metalwork, room installations, and other artwork.

Chihuly Collection at Morean Arts Center

Chihuly Collection at Morean Arts Center

The Chihuly Collection is a unique exhibition at the Morean Arts Center that houses a long-term collection of the unique glass works of Dale Chihuly, an internationally renowned artist.

Dale Chihuly’s artwork has been seen throughout Paris and London, along with Seattle’s spectacular Chihuly Garden. Here you can see his sculptures, plus glass-blowing demonstrations.

One of his most famous pieces is the ruby red icicle chandelier at the Morean Arts Center. The Ruby Red Icicle Chandelier is a spectacular studio glass piece that truly stands out with its pointy red droplets.

The Florida Holocaust Museum

The Florida Holocaust Museum with photos, of many of the families affected

Located in downtown St Pete, The Florida Holocaust Museum has been providing education for over 30+ years on the travesty that occurred during World War II.

Here you will find one of the best museums on the Holocaust, with many authentic artifacts such as clothing, photography, eating utensils, handwritten notes, etc. This permanent collection really leaves you with a deeper understanding and appreciation for our freedom today.

The Florida Holocaust Museum also has a small, but reasonably priced gift shop with donations that support the museum.

The Museum of Fine Arts

The Museum of Fine Arts

For art lovers, you’ll want to make a stop at the Museum of Fine Arts in the heart downtown on Beach Drive.

The museum features an extensive permanent collection of decorative arts along with folk arts artwork from African Art, American photography, and European paintings.

Imagine Museum

While I could keep going with the amazing art museums, The Imagine Museum is my last one for this article. If you are into contemporary glass art you’ll have to visit the Imagine Museum.

Just a few years ago, the Imagine Museum was not yet opened, but within a short time has gained popularity. It is the first museum in the US to focus solely on contemporary glass art and shares vital details about the movement and studio glass artists.

You’ll be blown away by what magnificent glass masterpieces. Plus, if you’re needing a little motivation, there are inspirational quotes throughout the 2-story building. The Imagine Museum has a little scavenger hunt that makes it a lot of fun for the whole family.

St Pete Boat Tours: Make Time on the Water!

boats in downtown St pete

There are many different tour types available, depending on what type of adventure you are looking for. If you really want to see dolphins, you can sign up for one of the dolphin boat tours . These tours are very reasonably priced for a day out on the water.

In Tampa Bay there are beautiful sunset cruises , tiki tours , night kayak tours , which are great activities for couples. They also have family snorkeling tours to Egmont Key or Shell Key, which are ideal for families with children.

Take the Cross Bay Ferry to Tampa

Cross Bay Ferry

Taking the downtown ferry to Tampa is a fun way to explore Tampa especially if you’re staying at downtown St Pete hotel. You can easily walk from Straub Park and jump aboard. Avoid the traffic and enjoy some time on the water!

Tampa has so much to offer! From fun things to do for couples or families , you won’t run out of interesting sights. If you only have a day to explore, I highly recommend the ferry. Otherwise, Tampa really deserves more time and stay the night in downtown Tampa hotel .

Explore Historic Landmarks in St Pete

Bike rentals or scooter rentals are available. Photo at Straub Park of bikes to rent.

St. Petersburg is home to several historic landmarks and buildings that are worth exploring. Downtown St Pete is super easy to navigate whether you go for a bike ride or stroll. From the breathtaking Vinoy Renaissance Resort & Golf Club located right by the waterfront (which was built in 1925). In recent years, they have been doing a lot of construction to bring it back to its glory.

Whether you book a hotel night stay here or visit for a drink, it’s one of the most iconic hotels similar to the glorious pink palace in St Pete Beach, The Don CeSar .

St Petersburg offers self-guided audio tours if you have interest in seeing the Historic Outdoor Museum of Roser Park, African American Heritage Trails, and Downtown Waterfront Walking Tours.

Eat at the Best Restaurants in Downtown St Petersburg

Try out some of the numerous cafés, restaurants, and bistros while in St. Petersburg. You will surely get hungry in downtown St Petersburg whether your favorite meal is an American sandwich or a Swiss dessert.

Parkshore Grill

Outdoor seating area at Parkshore Grill St Petersburg

The Parkshore Grill is one of my long-time favorite restaurants for consistent quality meals with a gorgeous setting. I recommend booking in advance on OpenTable.

It’s also no surprise that this restaurant is always busy, given the wonderful scenery just outside the restaurant. You can choose to eat al fresco while overlooking the city’s waterfront.

It also has a great weekend brunch menu in addition to lunch and dinner.

Steaks, fresh fish, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and paninis are just some of the options. Some of my favorites: the scallops, salmon, parkshore salad, and the decadent mac and cheese.

The Ceviche St Petersburg has a luxurious and grand feel to it, and it’s a great place to relax and spend time with friends and family. Brussels, fresh salmon, oxtail, and churros are just a few delicious things you can order from its menu. Don’t pass on their red sangria (I prefer it the standard way).

For a fun date night, order a variety of tapas for your table to share. If you like the outdoors or people-watching, ask for a table outside. This is a prime location on Beach Drive just to enjoy the scenery.

On less than desirable weather conditions, they have a gorgeous interior with bright colors and beautiful tiles that make you want to stay longer.

Urban Stillhouse

The Urban Stillhouse is a great place to eat an expensive steak and drink whiskey (sounds like Yellowstone!).  This 2-story restaurant has a dark interior with a high-end industrial vibe.

The Urban Stillhouse offers novel and traditional American foods that are grilled to order. It’s best to book a table in advance on OpenTable.

The Library Restaurant

The Library Restaurant is one of my favorite brunch locations. While it’s not near the heart of downtown, it’s just a short drive away.

The Library provides an escape from daily stresses with a unique atmosphere and delicious entrees.

Casita Taqueria

Casita is orange building on Central Avenue with bikes out front.

Casita Taqueria on Central Avenue is a go-to casual spot for locals who like a wide range of tasty tacos! If you’re craving Shrimp, Carnitas, or Slow Roasted Pork, you’ll be delighted by their savory options.

All of their corn tortillas are prepared in-house, and they only use the freshest available local produce. They also have delicious chips and queso, and a cute patio outback for guests to utilize.

Pub Trolley Tour

You need the trolley pub tour when you want to go from bar to bar in a city. Why not get a tour and drinks while on vacation? It’s truly a win-win.

With this tour, you can go to different breweries and drink their incredible, one-of-a-kind drinks without a care in the world. Along the way, you can also meet new people who like the same things you do and take pictures going to and from each checkpoint.

Grand Central District

Salty Nun is a good place for brunch

As a local, I’ve seen the Grand Central District really take off in the last 10 years. It’s gone from bland to fabulous as more local restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, and artsy boutiques continue to flock here.

Take time for a stroll, and enjoy the scene! Anyone that travels with dogs, must make time at one of my favorites, The Dog Bar . Plus, you have the Hatchet Hangout Axe Throwing , antique shops , and more. Three Daughters Brewing is located in this district.

Visit Local St Pete Breweries & Distilleries

Green Bench brewing, best breweries in St Petersburg FL

If you enjoy drinking, St. Petersburg won’t let you down. Here are a few in the downtown area that are excellent choices.

3 Daughters Brewing

A couple of my personal favorite breweries are the 3 Daughters Brewing and Green Bench Brewing. Both have a lot to offer and are good for the entire family.

At the 3 Daughters Brewing, you could stay most of the day since they have other things to do, such as live music events, food, games, and local vendors selling their handmade items.

Green Bench Brewing Company

Green Bench Brewing Company specializes in a family-friendly beer garden serving IPAs, ales, and ciders. From dogs to children, everyone is welcome! It has a spacious interior and friendly staff. If you like good beer, this is one of the best breweries in St Petersburg.

Kozuba and Sons Distillery

As far as distilleries, Kozuba and Sons Distillery is a fun place to stop and sample (try the lemon vodka). The distillery has a great atmosphere, like a speakeasy during the prohibition era.

St Pete Distillery

St Pete Distillery has a delicious coconut rum, and the orange liqueur is particularly good. While it’s at the end of town, it’s a good take-home gift idea to remember your time in the area.

Stopping at these places for a while will give you and your friends new things to do. Visiting these places will not only allow you to have unique and fine wine but also find out how they brew their alcohol. Who knows, you might even start your brewery one day.

Beautiful Outdoor Parks & Gardens in Downtown St Pete

Beautiful parks and gardens in the center of St. Pete St. Petersburg, Florida, are surrounded by trees and plants that are very healthy and full of life. This means that people can enjoy the peace and greenery that the area.

You can unwind as you spend hours touring the many parks in the city. So, here are my top favorite parks in downtown St Petersburg.

Sunken Gardens

Sunken Gardens one of the older attractions and things to do in St. Petersburg FL

The Sunken Gardens are home to the region’s oldest tropical plants, some of which are over a century old. Here, you can enjoy the beautiful display gardens, horticultural programs, flowing waterfalls, flamingos, and a live collection of more than 6,000 plant species.

The gardens are attached to the Great Explorations Children’s Museum , which makes it an ideal stop for families. You can easily see both on the same day. While I like Sunken Gardens, I seem to spend more time in the local parks.

Since it is one of Florida’s last remaining roadside attractions, Sunken Gardens visitors should be prepared to stay on the paved trails and avoid touching the plants. There is also an admission fee to tour Sunken Gardens.

Glazer Family Playground at St Pete Pier

St Pete Pier Playground

At St Pete Pier, you’ll find a large playground for the kids (toddlers to older children), concessions, and a splash pad. They also have Spa Beach, which is a nice place to cool off on a hot day. This is a popular spot, and best to come early if you want to avoid crowds.

Vinoy Park has gorgeous views of the waterfront in st pete. Showing boats and tall buildings.

Looking for that perfect photo to take of downtown St Petersburg? Make a quick stop in Vinoy Park.

Vinoy Park, a two-mile stretch of shoreline in the heart of St. Petersburg, provides picturesque views of the city, the breathtaking waterfront, and the nearby historic Vinoy Renaissance Resort . The park is a nice spot to unwind in the shade while reading a book or to spend time with friends and family in the open green areas. Many of the top events held in the city each year take place there as well, like Florida’s Largest Pride Parade .

It’s one of the hidden gems in St Petersburg since it’s not something most still know about.

North Shore Park & Aquatic Complex

North Shore Aquatic Complex with lots of swimmers in the pool.

North Shore Park is a 30-acre waterfront park with a North Shore Aquatic Complex , a kid’s playground, a dog park, beach volleyball courts, softball fields, and more!

It is located next to Vinoy Park and offers an array of activities, low-cost or free things to do. While in North Shore Park, visit the free gardens and enjoy a walk along the waterfront.

Dell Holmes Park

Dell Holmes Park

Dell Holmes Park is one of my new favorite parks in St. Petersburg, Florida. If I’m honest – finding a park that checks all my family’s boxes is challenging, especially if you want to avoid crowds like at the St Pete Pier. In fact, I would drive all the way up to Tarpon Springs Waterpark to find something similiar.

Dell Holmes Park is just south of downtown St. Petersburg and is free to use. The park is situated on Lake Maggiore which is ideal for boating, fishing, and walking trails. My husband especially appreciates the driving range and putting green. At the same time, my son loves the massive playground area and waterpark. You’ll find plenty of picnic areas and covered space so you can enjoy the park year round.

Crescent Lake Park

Crescent Lake Park

Crescent Lake Park stands out from the rest of St. Petersburg’s parks because of its stunning scenery. People are calmed by the trees, plants, and water as they walk around the perimeter of the pond.

Crescent Lake Park is surrounded by lovely banyan trees and is a popular spot for a range of activities. Bring a blanket or sit on the grass and participate in Healthy St. Pete’s Free Yoga in the Park program.

Additionally, The Huggins-Stengel Sports Complex, TASCO’s Center for Teen Technology, a playground, a dog park, and recreation paths are all located in this park.

👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 Pro Tip:   If you have young children, Crescent Lake has a nice shaded playground that’s close to downtown and less busy than the St Pete Pier (with free parking).

Check Out the Adorable Boutiques & Bookstores

Sundial Shopping

Unique souvenirs are simple to find in downtown St. Petersburg, thanks to the abundance of boutiques and unique bookstores downtown.

Check out Jackie Z Style Co. in the Sundial Mall for unique high-end clothing. Afterwards, you can grab dinner or a movie, since AMC Movie Theater entrance is steps away.

Tombolo Books, off 1st Avenue S, is a cute shop full of delightful reads. Or if you like a book with your wine (or a coffee), you must stop in at Book + Bottle .

Best Coffee Shops in Downtown St Pete

A cup of steaming coffee is ideal for waking up and preparing for the day ahead. There are numerous cafés in downtown St Petersburg where you may purchase their best coffee. The best coffee businesses have inviting décor and delectable beverages, like Bandit Coffee Co. and Black Crow Coffee Shop. My personal favoirte is Bandit Coffee Company, and it’s next to Wild Child (another one of my secret hidden gems for Sunday brunch)!

Tampa Bay Rays Game

The Tampa Bay Rays, a major league baseball team from St. Petersburg, are worth checking out if you enjoy a ball game. Check out the schedule for the Tropicana Field prior to your visit.

During the off-season or away games, they have other events at Tropicana Field, such as Enchant ( Christmas Lights ), Boat Shows, and more! For years, Tampa Bay Rays talked about moving their stadium to Tampa or even out of state! Locals like myself are glad to see they are staying put while they build a brand new stadium on the property!

Spend Time at Unique & Local Markets in St Petersburg

Florida’s St. Petersburg is home to numerous unique and local markets. Flea markets, farmer’s markets, and Saturday morning markets are important locations where you can easily buy household goods, food, and souvenirs.

Mazzaro’s Italian Market

IMG 1694

Customers and tourists can purchase a variety of delectable items at Mazzaro’s Italian Market. For those that love fresh coffee beans, cheese, homemade pasta, meat, and wine, you’ll have to make a stopover on 22nd Avenue North.

My personal favorite is getting their fresh homemade to-go lasagne and caesar salad. The portion is large enough for sharing, and it’s delicious! Plus, don’t miss the dessert area – I have had so many amazing things here.

Saturday Morning Market: Downtown St Pete Farmer’s Market

Downtown St Pete Farmer's Market showing green beans and fresh produce.

Travel is sometimes exhausting and enjoyable. A great chance to breathe in the air while preserving the local culture is to visit the Saturday morning market.

With more than 100 vendors that sell everything from fresh food to artisan desserts made at local farms. They also sell outstanding handmade crafts, goods, and other products.

The Saturday morning market is the best place to go when planning a picnic – pick up a few things and then stroll over to Vinoy Park or the St Pete Pier.

Corey Avenue Sunday Market on St. Pete Beach

Corey Avenue Sunday Market on St. Pete Beach

St. Petersburg has a boatload of fantastic markets, but another one of my top things to do in St. Petersburg is visit the Corey Avenue Sunday Market. The whole street is shut down as live music, fresh produce, locally made crafts, and 75+ unique vendors come together every Sunday. We usually like to walk around and then pop over to Upham Beach and grab a pasterie and coffee at CocoAddiction .

Enjoy the Performing Arts & Live Music in St Petersburg

Elle King on stage in St Pete at Jannus Live. Jannus has a beautiful outdoor patio, and it's one of my favorite things to do in St. Petersburg at night.

You’ll be amazed as to why music is such a significant component of the events planned in St. Petersburg, Florida. Well, it’s because the locals love music, and they enjoy listening to rock, jazz, and other genres of music, resulting in numerous live music performances.

Mahaffey Theater

The Mahaffey Theater (Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts) is a sophisticated performing arts and concert hall located in the same complex as The Dali. It has over 2,000 seats with beautiful views of Tampa Bay.

The Mahaffey Theater is where you will see headliners or see a ballet or other large-scale event. I’ve seen a variety of performances over the years, from Lorretta Lynn to performing arts shows. The Mahaffey Theater often has shows for the whole family – such as the popular, Big Red Dog Musical.

See a Show at Jannus Live

Located in downtown St Pete, Jannus Live is one of the premier outdoor music venues in St. Petersburg. With a variety of genres spanning rock, pop, hip-hop, and jazz, there’s an eclectic offering of musical talents. Get ready for an unforgettable night of live music!

Floridian Social Club

Because of its well-known, distinctive exteriors and interiors, this area stands out from other places. It hosts public concerts, private events, and open-to-the-public social gatherings. Additionally, there is an open lounge where food and drinks will be served to attendees of a certain event. Check out their upcoming events page to hopefully catch their performing arts while you’re in town.

Unique Bars in Downtown St Pete

Stillwaters Tavern is a nice option for a beer with lighter fare. Showing outdoor seating and beautiful views of highrises.

There are numerous bars in St. Petersburg’s downtown where visitors may have a good time. Going to the local taverns is a great opportunity to learn about the history of the community and how hospitable the people are. Additionally, you have a variety of options to select from, allowing you to try something new.

Canopy Rooftop Lounge

Located far above the streets, The Canopy is a rooftop bar where you can have a drink and take in the amazing view. The stylish lounge is situated on the roof of the Birchwood Hotel and offers private cabanas, cozy fire pits, and comfortable lounge seats with unobstructed views of the downtown St Petersburg waterfront.

The Full-Service Bar offers patrons a choice of handcrafted cocktails, fine wines, and an assortment of spirits, while birchwood’s upper-level cuisine serves a seasonal menu for casual dishes, including sandwiches, flatbreads, and appetizers all prepared in-house.

This is my favorite rooftop bar in downtown St Petersburg. Come at happy hour, which runs from 4-7 pm, and take in the sunset. Enjoy the drink specials(such as red or white sangria for 5 bucks). They have a very nice charcuterie board with a great mix of meats, cheese, fruits, and nuts. Late night hours, this becomes more like a nightclub with a DJ or live music.

If you are looking for a unique atmosphere and fun cocktails, check out The Saint. This speakeasy requires a password to get in (it’s on their website and Instagram), so you’re bound to have a great time. It is located in St. Petersburg’s Grand Central neighborhood. Keep in mind, the drinks are expensive.

Bacchus Wine Bistro

Bacchus Wine Bistro

If you like charcuterie and small plates with wine, check out Bacchus Wine Bistro . While it’s not as unique as some of the other bars, its quaint atmosphere is nice for conversational seating with friends or couples.

For those that enjoy wine, they have an extensive list. I prefer their outdoor seating when it’s available for a carefree hour or two!

See the Historic Neighborhoods of St Petersburg

The Vinoy Golf Club on Snell Isle

I’ve often seen Historic Kenwood listed as the most charming neighborhood because of its bungalows designed in the 1920s.

While I enjoy seeing Historic Kenwood, my preferred historic sites include the Historic Old Northeast, Coffee Pot Boulevard NE and Snell Isle.

If you want to see some of the finest houses where local politicians such as Charlie Christ live. Then you’ll want to drive along N. Shore Drive NE to Coffee Pot Boulevard to Snell Isle. This short drive from downtown won’t take you more than an hour roundtrip, so you could possibly fit in Historic Kenwood too!

Watch the Tampa Bay Rowdies Play

If you enjoy soccer, you should watch the St Petersburg squad, the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

This professional soccer team goes under the radar for most people on vacation, but it’s definitely a lot of fun to watch. Check out their schedule for a full list of upcoming games.

Check Out the Beautiful Murals

St Pete Mural with hand reaching out

St. Petersburg, Florida, is also known for the murals you can see all over the city, especially on walls in public places. There is also the Grand Central Arts District, which is filled with murals.

In St. Petersburg, there probably is a daring and magnificent piece of art covering any outdoor surface. The murals that decorate the city’s walls are renowned (in fact, there are more than 150). There is even an annual mural festival called SHINE that takes place in St Petersburg in October and invites artists from all over the world.

Beyond Downtown | Other Amazing Things to Do in St Petersburg FL

Bellwether Beach Resort has amazing views of the gulf of Mexico being directly on the beach, St Pete Beach.

While I listed a lot of amazing places in downtown St Petersburg. St Petersburg is more than just a city of fascinating exhibits.

There are many things to see, especially outdoors in Pinellas County in St Pete Beach , Madeira Beach , Treasure Island, Indian Rocks Beach , Gulfport , and more!

Fort De Soto Park

Fort De Soto Park showing an old cannon

If you’re looking for one of the best things to do in St Petersburg FL, for nature lovers, you have found it.

Fort De Soto Park was built on Mullet Key under the direction of Robert E. Lee. It is now largely known for having some of the best award-winning beaches, boating, fishing, and wildlife, with over 1,100 acres to explore. Make sure to spend some at the picturesque white sand beaches (I especially like North Beach).

There are miles of paved nature trails, camping and picnic spots, two fishing piers, bird watching, ferry rides to Egmont and Shell Keys, and a dog area. Of course, you can’t leave without seeing the historic fort and museum.

Camping at Fort De Soto Park is truly the best way to experience all that this park has to offer. There are a total of 236 campsites with facilities that also include access to electricity, washers and dryers, restrooms, playgrounds, and campsite stores.

You can also bring your dog. Fort De Soto Park has one of the best dog beaches in Florida.

Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge

Egmont Key State Park

Egmont Key State Park is a secluded private island only accessible by boat. Since there’s no admission fee (only transportation cost).

Island Ferry of St Pete Beach is one ferry option, or you can visit through For De Soto Park. Keep in mind, you’ll need to bring your own beach or snorkel equipment.

One of the best ways to see Egmont Key State Park is on a boat tour. They provide the equipment and you can relax and enjoy the island! This 4-Hour Egmont Key Boat Tour provides snorkel equipment, bottled waters, and an indoor cabin with air-conditioning when it gets hot. Plus, they take you by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge for gorgeous photo opportunities.

You can spend time at the white sand beach, go snorkeling or swimming in crystal clear waters, or enjoy the nature trails. The blue-green water is shallow and clear at Egmont Key, so it’s easy to see the beautiful shells and fish swimming around you.

Keep your eyes open for old structures that have since been submerged in the Gulf of Mexico. You can also see (and we often do) manatees, dolphins, and other marine life while snorkeling around this island.

Take a break from snorkeling and see some of Egmont Key by walking the nature trail. The brick paths will lead you to several structures and a lighthouse that are historic ruins of Fort Dade that date back to 1858.

Before you visit, make sure you have good weather. Egmont Key State Park is a distance by boat and you don’t want to be out there in a storm.

Enjoy a Round of Golf in Pinellas County

Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club in St Petersburg

With gulf coast breezes and sunny weather, a day on the golf course is another one of the fun things to do in St Petersburg FL. Check out our article on the best golf courses in Pinellas County .

If you prefer a miniature golf course, Smugglers Cove has a couple of locations in Tampa Bay. Some even have live alligators and pirate ships!

Weedon Island Preserve

If you’re not yet oversaturated by beaches and parks, Weedon Island Preserve is another beautiful spot in Tampa Bay. With 3,1900 acres of nature trails and green spaces, you have plenty of bird watching opportunities. Plus, you can enjoy a paddling trail with canoe or kayak rentals available to rent.

Weedon Island Preserve offers guided tours which are great for the whole family. One of the most interesting nature hikes is an active archaeological dig site on Weeden Island Preserve. Here you can learn about the early inhabitants of Weedon Island thousands of years ago.

Observation towers are another great way to see wildlife. At Wheedon Island Preserve, their observation tower provides visitors with an excellent view of Tampa Bay and the cities of St Petersburg and Tampa .

Make Time for Day Trips in St Petersburg Area

Sunset photo was taken on the water of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge

Tampa Bay really has a boatload of places to see! You’ll definitely want to make time for some day trips. I have an extensive list of favorite places, but here are a few to mention:

Bradenton Florida Marina showing boats

Head over the beautiful Sunshine Skyway Bridge to the city of Bradenton, Florida. Before you get there, some people like to stop at the Skyway Fishing Pier State Park for beautiful views of the Gulf of Mexico. The fishing piers are the location of the old bridge which has great fishing, such as Spanish mackerel, tarpon, and sea trout.

In Bradenton, you’ll find a nice laid-back waterfront town with a beautiful riverwalk. One of my favorite science museums, The Bishop Museum of Science & Nature , is located downtown with manatees in their aquarium. Check out my full list of fun things to do in Bradenton .

Clearwater & Clearwater Beach

Clearwater church of scientology

Beyond the Church of Scientology, Clearwater is famous for the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of suffering marine animals. They provide public education, including dolphin boat tours and conservation efforts in a hands-on experience.

The aquarium gained worldwide recognition for being where the Bottlenose Dolphin, “Winter” lived. Winter was the main character in the 2009 book Winter’s Tale and, more notably, became the 2011 film, Dolphin Tale .

Downtown Clearwater Beach is also worth visiting, and one of my favorite staycations! Read more about deciding between St Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach for vacation here !

💰 Local Tip: If you are here on vacation get a Tampa Bay CityPass to save 53% off! The CityPass includes Busch Gardens, The Florida Aquarium, Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, The Tropic Boats Tour, and the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI).

Dunedin Museum

If you love quaint towns on the waterfront, Dun edin has a lot to offer! Some of the best local breweries in Pinellas County are in the charming city. You’ll be impressed by the many restaurants , shops, and the parking is usually free. However, it is a drive from downtown St Petersburg, so you’ll definitely want to plan for being there all day.

Madeira Beach

Madeira Beach

Come to the land of the pirates! As legend has it, Madeira Beach’s first resident was a pirate which helped shape its unique history.

It is widely known for its 2.5 mile long white sandy beaches and the historical John’s Pass Village. This beautiful shopping district has over 100 unique shops and many restaurants, bars, and watersports equipment available to rent.

John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk has been ranked the #1 attraction in Pinellas County.

Tampa Florida Waterfront view

If you’re looking for world-class thrill rides, zoos, concerts, and a big-city feel, you can’t miss Tampa . As I mentioned earlier, you’ll definitely want to make time for this fantastic city on your trip itinerary.

Tarpon Springs

Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, photo of boat with sponges

Tarpon Springs is a city located on the Gulf of Mexico. Known for its Greek eateries that line the waterfront of Dodecanese Boulevard, it has a rich Greek heritage. In the early 1900s, Greek sponge divers settled here and the town was famous for selling sponges.

Enjoy a leisurely walk to see the Historic Sponge Docks are a reminder of the once booming industry. If you get time for a meal, try Hellas Restaurant (they also have a delicious bakery on the property).

Safety Harbor

Safety Harbor downtown

Safety Harbor wasn’t one of the first cities in St. Petersburg to attract my attention. However, it’s been one of my more frequent places to visit in the last year. This quaint town is also located on the water with a super laid-back vibe, with local breweries, antique shops, and golf carts replacing cars for locals. While the city is most known for it’s famous healing springs, there’s plenty to do here on a day trip from St Pete.

Final Thoughts on Things to Do in St Petersburg FL

I hope my favorite things to do in St. Petersburg list are helpful to you! Whatever you do, make sure to spend some time on a boat or near the water. Our gorgeous white sand beaches and crystal clear water are one of a kind. I always feel rejuvenated after spending a couple of hours walking the beach or on a boat.

As I mentioned, I continue to find new things I adore about the Sunshine City. Please feel free to message me anytime if you see new things I need to add to my list!

So much to do and see. I had no idea there was a holocaust museum there. I would definitely want to visit it.

Oooh nice! I had no idea there was so much art in St Petersburg! The Salvador Dali Museum (and the others) sound really fun to explore.

It may be named after the city in Russia, but this couldn’t look much more different!! So much sunshine!

The Dali Museum is awesome. Next time I need to do a boat tour and also visit some breweries.

Wow, Erin! This is an awesome list of things to do in St. Petersburg. I can’t believe that we have yet to visit. I would love to check out some of the restaurants you mentioned. I mean, you had me at tacos!!

Why You Really Need to Visit St. Petersburg, Florida

Florida's historic St. Petersburg invites you to its vibrant downtown and gorgeous beaches.

travel st petersburg florida

All About the Arts

Sunken gardens and surreal experiences, international flavors, beautiful beaches, the best of both worlds, hotels in st. petersburg.

Once a sleepy coastal city where retirees congregated on green benches lining the streets, Tampa's neighboring town now draws entrepreneurs, painters, and travelers—from beach lovers to art aficionados. (Retirees have a lot more fun too.) "My parents told me, 'You're too young to move to St. Pete,'" said Emily Elwyn, who relocated anyway, along with scads of other Gen-Xers and millennials who've helped invigorate this town. "So much of what people want is what we already have: a walkable downtown, front-porch neighborhoods, funky old buildings, and access to the arts, parks, and recreation." Not to mention the fact that beaches are minutes away.

A 12-year resident, Elwyn now serves as president of the board of directors at Preserve the "Burg, a nonprofit that leads city tours for locals and tourists every Saturday. From the Historic Old Northeast neighborhood, with its inviting bungalows, to the business center along the marina, where new additions and million-dollar condos are popping up, St. Petersburg feels both historic and emergent.

Locals say the recent boom has centered along Beach Drive (facing the bay) and Central Avenue (lined with galleries, bars, and boutiques).

"The town has only been this exciting for about 15 years," said Jeri Gammage, who volunteers at Florida CraftArt, a gallery and store, that's also a statewide nonprofit. Gammage attributes the city's evolution to the arts community. "Some might argue it's the baseball team," she said, nodding toward the Tampa Bay Rays' Tropicana Field on the downtown fringe. "But most people in the baseball shirts go straight to the stadium."

For Gammage, it was the Morean Arts Center , where locals can take classes and tourists can watch glassblowing demos, that sparked many changes downtown. She said that once the Morean joined Florida CraftArt on Central Avenue a few years back, the businesses, restaurants, and warehouses-turned-studios followed.

Adding to the cachet of Central Avenue, the Morean's Chihuly Collection (a trove of fantastical blown-glass creations by Dale Chihuly) moved inside a new gallery designed to help the viewer appreciate every curl and spire. The artist reportedly chose St. Petersburg because of its commitment to art and arts education. Gallery owner and multimedia artist Chad Mize even designed a popular T-shirt that proudly proclaims, in bold lettering, this city's place among the world's biggest cultural hubs: "Paris, London, Tokyo, St. Pete."

"Originally, it was tongue-in-cheek, but we actually are kind of in that league," said Mize, who has sold more than 60,000 items with his World Tour design. "We are definitely an arts city in terms of culture and desirability."

Shoppers along Central Avenue can browse through the curated housewares at ZaZoo'd, snag affordable handmade jewelry at SaltLight Art, and find on-trend fashions under $60 at Misred. Stroll past the murals that decorate refurbished buildings, some of which Mize painted after he moved to St. Pete, attracted by its heritage and potential for growth. "I loved the kitsch of it, the neon signs, the roadside-attraction aspect, and also the water," he said. "Now there's just so much—new restaurants and more stuff to do."

Like Central Avenue, Beach Drive has done its part to spur the city's renaissance. The Museum of Fine Arts , which anchors this thoroughfare with neoclassical grandeur, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015. Its handsome interiors are reminiscent of a grand, old estate, one where there just happens to be a Monet hanging on the wall. (It's one of his Houses of Parliament paintings, just in case you're wondering.)

Only a few blocks away, a botanical wonderland that's called the Sunken Gardens hides right in the middle of downtown. This landscape—more than a century old—will lure you into a maze of paths through towering palms and past fountains of pink bougainvillea and manicured gardens. People come from all over the country to admire the fluttering tops of bamboo stalks that grow as tall as palm trees.

Visitors can get so entranced with the plants that they might not have time to stop by one of St. Petersburg's most amazing jewels: the stunning home for works by Spanish Surrealist Salvador Dalí.

The Dalí Museum overlooks the marina and faces the renovated Duke Energy Center for the Arts-The Mahaffey Theater, which hosts world-class concerts, ballets, and more. Worth a trip for the architecture alone, The Dalí invites visitors to climb an elegant spiral stairway to see masterworks housed on the third floor and to enjoy water and sky views through an undulating window on the way up.

Take in the Dreams of Dalí virtual reality experience, where you will join other headset-wearing visitors "walking" amid stark and startling landscapes. In the Avant-garden, you can pose with a mustache sculpture or sit on an oozing green bench that looks like it came straight out of a Dalí painting.

"The Dalí has made us a destination for people from around the world," Gammage said. Have dinner at Tryst Gastro Lounge on Beach Drive, and you might hear Spanish, French, or Italian accents coming from nearby tables.

Enjoy the ambiance as well as Tryst's frequently changing menu that promises fresh surprises every time you visit. Order a cocktail, and join couples lounging beneath umbrellas at sidewalk tables. (Try the Tryst: Deep Eddy vodka, muddled strawberry, raspberry, lemon, and elderflower liquor.) Relax under the indoor twinkling light strands. They complement the illuminated facade of the Museum of Fine Arts, located just across the street, where banners highlight the current exhibit.

It's a happening spot. Clusters of diners bustle by to meet friends at Tryst and other eateries, such as Red Mesa Cantina just a few blocks away; locals take their dogs out for nightly walks, and places like Ocean Blue Galleries stay open late into the evening. St. Petersburg seems less like a typical resort town and more like a bayside neighborhood where visitors can take up residence and feel at home, if only for the weekend.

Despite the city's charms, the sand and surf of St. Pete Beach will eventually lure you away. The flamingo-hued Don CeSar hotel, known as the Pink Palace, has been welcoming guests to this barrier island since the 1920s.

On a perfect day—temps in the low 80s, no humidity, fluttering palms— it can be tough to find a parking spot on Gulf Way, which runs along the beachfront in the historic Pass-a-Grille neighborhood. The powder-soft white sand and turquoise-streaked water are worth enduring a momentary traffic jam. Across from Eighth and Ninth Avenues, a happy, banana yellow hole-in-the-wall called Paradise Grille serves sunbathers from breakfast until dinnertime. It's flanked on Saturdays by the Suntan Art Mart, where you can find beach-themed creations and estate jewelry.

Take a seat at the rooftop bar at Hurricane Seafood Restaurant for a seagull's view of the beach scene. The nearby Brass Monkey also offers an impressive Gulf vista, along with a tangy Grouper Reuben.

On the pastel-colored row of beachy Eighth Avenue shops, check out Bamboozle and Etc., which are both brimming with stylish coastal wares. This short street dead-ends into Merry Pier, with an old bait shop where you can book fishing charters. Hop on the shuttle to Shell Key, an undeveloped barrier island. After a 10-minute boat ride, the captain will drop you off where you're free to snorkel, sunbathe, dolphin-watch, and collect shells until the shuttle picks you up a few hours later. End the day with dinner on historic Corey Avenue at Chill Restaurant & Bar. (Order the espresso-rubbed beef tenderloin.)

Don't leave St. Pete without swinging back downtown for a drink along Central Avenue, which pulses with live music at a string of bars where tables spill onto the sidewalk. Check out The Mandarin Hide, a sophisticated speakeasy-style place, or head to Mastry's Bar, a local landmark. They're both great spots to toast St. Petersburg while planning your return.

St. Pete has no shortage of cool hotels, including some classic coastal spots.

The Pink Palace is the centerpiece of St. Pete Beach. Opened in 1928, The Don Cesar celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2018 but still feels updated, with a new lobby and room renovations completed over the past decade.

Hollander Hotel, Downtown

With its restaurant (The Tap Room), a spa, and the stunning courtyard pool and terrace, this affordable gem is within walking distance of Beach Drive.

Avalon, Downtown

The Hollander Hotel's sister property offers access to the Hollander's pool as well as complimentary Champagne and wine every evening.

12 Awesome Things To Do In St. Petersburg, Florida

By Lisa Wells September 20, 2019 Updated: December 8, 2023 · This post may contain affiliate links · 2 Comments

Things To Do In St Petersburg Florida - Coastal Wandering

If you're dreaming of warm summer sunshine and beautiful white sands then St. Petersburg, Florida might just be your perfect beachside destination. Here are 12 fun things to do, including a guide to the local beaches, water adventures, historic sights, and fun restaurants (plus accompanying day trip itineraries).

Things To Do In St Petersburg Florida - Coastal Wandering

You'll find St. Petersburg between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, on the Pinellas peninsula. Some know it as The Sunshine City, others know it as St. Pete, but no matter what you call it, you're sure to have a fantastic beach getaway when you vacation in this U.S. destination.

With an average of 361 days of sunshine each year, you're likely to have fantastic weather during your stay. This makes it particularly great for snowbirds and other winter getaways. But no matter when you visit, there's plenty to do and see in the area.

Your Guide to St Petersburg, Florida Beaches & Surrounding Area

While you'll have plenty of sand and sunshine to enjoy, these 12 places and activities are spread across four key areas in and around St. Petersburg:

Fort De Soto Park & Beach

  • Saint Pete Beach
  • Pass-a-Grille
  • Downtown St. Petersburg

Each spot could be a day trip on its own, but these destinations are all close to one another, so you can easily combine parts of these itineraries for a little beach-hopping weekend getaway.

To search for the best hotels in St. Petersburg, click here .

This popular county park spans five islands and covers over 1,000 acres along the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay. Pack your beach bag, because here are the best things to do during a day spent in the Fort De Soto area.

Fort De Soto Beach Birds - Coastal Wandering

1. Kick Back On The Fort De Soto Beach

This is a favorite of mine. Aside from the (obvious) attraction of sandy shores and coastal views, my husband grew up going here with his grandparents. We always make a point of going whenever we're in St Petersburg.

Recognized by the likes of USA Today and Parents Magazine, Fort De Soto Beach's beautiful sandy shores and kid-friendly tidal pools, it's no wonder that it regularly wins prizes for "Best Family Beach." This beach is great for more than just families though. Lounging, people-watching, and even finding seashells (perfect for crafts and coastal decor). These are all perfect ways to enjoy an afternoon at Fort De Soto Beach.

It's also a great place to visit if you're traveling with a furry companion. Fort De Soto is the only local dog park that has a designated area where dogs are allowed on the beach. Perfect if your pup enjoys splashing around.

2. Kayak (Or Canoe) The Local Waters

If you're up for an oceanside adventure, try renting a canoe or kayak. You could even take a unique look at the local wildlife with a clear kayak tour of the nearby Shell Key Wildlife Preserve. This area is well-traveled by pelicans, herons, osprey, manatees, rays and even dolphins!

3. Walk the Fort De Soto Trails

If you're feeling the need to get out and stretch your legs, Fort De Soto Park offers seven miles of multi-purpose trails. Whether you're out for a long run, casual stroll, or bike ride, you'll enjoy beautiful scenic views of the park.

4. Visit the Fort

No stop at Fort De Soto Park is complete without a look at the historic fort. Take a self-guided tour of Battery Laidley and the ruins of Battery Bigelow.

Battery Laidley offers a glimpse at the final remaining 12-inch M 1890-MI mortars in North America. If you want to see the other remaining mortars, you'll have to travel to the Philippines! And while Battery Bigelow was swallowed up by the Gulf of Mexico in 1932, you can still spot the ruins in the surf just a little southwest of Battery Laidley.

You'll pass the Fort as you head towards the North Beach area, so save a little time for a quick look as you head towards the beach.

Key Details For Planning Your Visit To Fort De Soto Park & Beach

Parking: Daily parking fees of $5, though there are also annual parking passes available. You are not required to pay a fee if you have a valid Disabled Parking Permit. You are not required to pay a fee if you're entering the park on foot or by bicycle.

Hours: 7 am until dusk

Accessibility:  Fort De Soto Park offers a 2,200 ft Barrier-Free Nature Trail , which includes access to rest areas and water fountains.

Suggested Fort De Soto Park & Beach day trip itinerary:

  • 9 am - 10 am: visit the Fort
  • 10 am - 12 pm: rent a kayak
  • 12 pm - 1 pm: picnic lunch
  • 1 pm - 4 pm: kick back on Fort De Soto's North Beach
  • 4 pm - 5 pm: take a stroll along the nature trail
  • 5 pm onwards: head home for dinner

St. Pete Beach

This is probably the first beach that visitors think of when they think about St. Petersburg, and it doesn't disappoint. With a great selection of water fun, boutiques, restaurants, and (of course) a beautiful beach, this is one of my favorite day trip destinations in the area.

5. Lounge On Saint Pete Beach

Here's another noteworthy and award-winning beach to check out. It was actually named the #4 U.S. beach on TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice Top 25 U.S. Beaches in 2019. (Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island and Coligny Beach on Hilton Head Island also made the list).

St. Pete Beach is well known for its wide sandy shores and clean white sands. It's great for shelling or simply lounging, and even though it's popular with locals and travelers alike, there's always room for everyone without the beach feeling over-crowded.

6. Plan An Action-Packed Water Adventure

If you're looking for a water adventure that packs a little more adrenaline, look no further than St. Pete Beach. Whether you're in the mood for stand-up paddle-boarding, windsurfing, kiteboarding, or even parasailing , you'll have a variety of high-octane water sports to choose from.

7. Visit the Don CeSar

While not technically a day trip activity, if you aren't staying at the Don CeSar then you at least need to go take a look at it! This historic hotel , fondly known by many as the Pink Palace, is truly a sight to behold. Think Great Gatsby meets tropical paradise! Built in the late 1920s, this popular beachfront property has been hosting travelers for almost a century!

8. Enjoy A Drink And The Sunset At Our Favorite Restaurant in St. Pete Beach

Cap off your day with a cocktail at Salty's Tiki Bar and Beach Lounge. I love sitting on the sofas on the beach around a fire pit table, kicking back as I watch the sunset. Toes in the sand and maybe even a little live music – what could be better?!

St Pete Beach Sunset - Coastal Wandering

Salty's is a particularly great choice if you're in the mood for a frozen cocktail, though they also serve beer and wine. Snack on some appetizers as you enjoy the end to a perfect day at the beach.

Key Details For Planning Your Visit To Saint Pete Beach

Parking:  You'll find a mix of permit and metered parking in the St Pete Beach area.

Hours: Dawn to dusk

Suggested St. Pete Beach day trip itinerary:

  • 9 am - 10 am: stroll along the shore and take a look at Don CeSar
  • 10 am - 12 pm: rent a stand-up paddle-board to get out on the water
  • 1 pm - 4 pm: lounging with a book on the beach
  • 4 pm onwards: relaxing at Salty's for snacks, drinks and a sunset view

Pass-a-Grille Beach

While Pass-a-Grille is officially part of St. Pete Beach, this hidden gem offers a distinctly different vibe. Head to Pass-a-Grille for a relaxing day away from the hustle of downtown St. Petersburg.

9. Enjoy the Pass-a-Grille Beach

You'll find these four beautiful miles of undeveloped public beach where Gulf Boulevard meets the Don CeSar. Pass-a-Grille is recognized as a National Historic District, this beach is quieter and calmer compared to its neighboring Saint Pete Beach.

These sandy shores are perfect for shelling and enjoying your surroundings – dolphins playing on the shoreline, spectacular sunsets, and snorkeling – without the crowds of the main Florida beaches .

10. Watch The Sunset at Hurricane Seafood Restaurant

A day in Pass-a-Grille isn't complete until you've enjoyed a grouper sandwich at the Hurricane. For us, it's a family tradition. We've gone to the Hurricane for years!

You'll find this restaurant at 9th Avenue and Gulf Way, situated perfectly for spectacular sunset views. If the grouper sandwich isn't for you, you'll also find classic Southern recipes like boom boom shrimp and crab cakes. And you'll want to try your best to get yourself seated on the rooftop bar – it's the best sunset view in Pass-a-Grille!

Key Details For Planning Your Visit To Pass-a-Grille

Parking:  Try the North and South Ends of Pass-a-Grille Beach for the easiest parking options. Meters typically start at around $1.25 per hour.

Hours: Dawn to dusk.

Accessibility: Limited accessibility.

Suggested Pass-a-Grille day trip itinerary:

  • 9 am - 10 am: pack a breakfast sandwich for breakfast on the beach
  • 10 am - 12 pm: shelling along the beach, beginning (or ending) at Don CeSar
  • 1 pm - 5 pm: kick back on the beach with your favorite book
  • 5 pm onwards: grab a cocktail and grouper sandwich on the Hurricane's rooftop bar

Downtown St. Petersburg, Florida

Make sure to save a little time to enjoy the heart of St. Petersburg, Florida. You'll find plenty of wonderful restaurants and attractions nearby. Perfect for a morning or afternoon away from the beach.

11. Visit The Dali Museum

If you need a little break from all the sun and surf, try spending an afternoon at The Dali . Offering a comprehensive overview of the life and work of Salvador Dali, this museum boasts the largest collection of Dali pieces found outside Spain. Among the 2,400+ works, you'll find everything from oil paintings to sculptures, manuscripts, and even some book illustrations.

12. Wine & Snacks at Annata (One of the Best Restaurants in St. Petersburg, FL)

There are plenty of great restaurants in downtown St. Petersburg, but the best restaurant (in my opinion) is Annata. You'll find this gem of a restaurant and wine bar on the harbor, near North Straub Park. We love this restaurant so much we visited twice on our last trip!

St Petersburg Florida Restaurants Annata Wine Bar - Coastal Wandering

While Annata's menu offers a nice mix of Italian and international dishes made with local ingredients. My favorite? The charcuterie. You'll find everything from duck prosciutto and shrimp chorizo to truffle ham and sriracha lomo. Not to mention a wide and varied selection of cheeses from all over the world.

St Petersburg Florida Restaurants Charcuterie - Coastal Wandering

Bottom line: Wine? Check. Good eats? Check. Annata is a must-visit when you're in the area.

Key Details For Planning Your Visit To Downtown St. Petersburg, Florida

Parking: There are time restrictions on most street parking spaces. Look for metered parking garages if you're planning to park for more than a couple hours.

Suggested downtown St. Petersburg half-day trip itinerary:

  • 12 pm - 12:30 pm: drive from a morning at Fort De Soto, St. Pete Beach, or Pass-a-Grille

St. Petersburg, Florida Hotels

There’s plenty of hotel options, and I have highlighted the five best. If you are traveling with kids then I recommend staying by the beach. St. Pete is the perfect spot for a family beach location so relax there in the day and then venture downtown in the evening for dinner.

For an adult-only trip, I think you can’t beat staying downtown. For a cheaper price you will still be a short drive from the beach, but you can fully immerse yourself in the city and experience all it has to offer.

The Hyatt Place is an extremely affordable option for this and is in walking distance to so many cool spots.

  • Avalon Hotel St. Petersburg/Downtown ($) – An affordable boutique hotel in the dowtown area. Prices are usually less than $100 a night, but keep in mind the rooms only sleep 2.
  • Hyatt Place St. Petersburg/Downtown ($/$$) – My personal favorite is this brand new Hyatt hotel centrally located near all the best restaurants and breweries. On average, it’s about $150-$200 per night, but check out this blog post for details on getting it much cheaper!
  • Hotel Indigo St. Petersburg Downtown ($$) – Another good, trendy downtown option, especially if you have IHG points to use. It is in the same price range as the Hyatt Place, but look for deals on the Hotels Tonight App.
  • Sirata Beach Resort ($$) – A family friendly beachfront resort with pools and hammocks throughout making it feels like paradise! I prefer the laid back styles of the Sirata over its gigantic neighbor Tradewinds, but they are both good options. Expect nightly rates up to $300 during spring break months and less than $150 prices in the off season.
  • The Don CeSar ($$$) – The crown jewel of St. Pete is the glamorous, pink Don Cesar Resort. If you want to splurge, do not hesitate to stay here! Expect to be treated like royalty while staying here, since it costs well over $300 per night.

This should be everything you need to know before you visit St. Petersburg, Florida! Of course there are so many other great restaurants and breweries that could be on here, but you won’t be disappointed visiting any on this list.

Keep in mind that Clearwater and Tampa Bay are only a short drive away and also have tons of things to do, so you will never be bored. St. Pete is where you can really have a quintessential Florida vacation, complete with beaches, great food and sightseeing.

I’ve included this city guide below to screenshot and reference on your trip!

Let me know in the comments if you have been to St. Petersburg or if I missed any of your favorites. I plan to roll out some more Florida travel guides soon so stay tuned for my next one about the Space Coast.

We want to share this 4 Days in St Petersburg FL itinerary so you can discover the uniqueness of this fun city.

If you visit St. Pete and stay for 4 days you can easily walk or rent scooters downtown, and uber to any of the nearby beaches if you don’t want to rent a car. The main hub for activity in downtown St Petersburg FL is Central Ave. There are bikes and scooters everywhere making it super easy to get around if you are tired of walking and don’t want to uber!

GETTING TO ST PETERSBURG FL

There are several airports around St. Petersburg FL, making your journey to St. Pete flexible.

The three main airports are:

TPA (Tampa International Airport) is only 18 miles from St. Pete.

St. Petersburg- Clearwater International Airport which is only 10 minutes from downtown.

SRQ (Sarasota Bradenton Airport) This is the farthest airport from St Petersburg FL, it’s an hour away but a feasible option if you are looking to explore other areas outside of St Petersburg FL.

THINGS TO DO IN ST PETERSBURG FL

St. Petersburg is unique because so many different types of people live here. There is a large artist population here, which has inspired many eye-catching murals spread across the city. In this 4 Days in St Petersburg FL itinerary, we will highlight all the top things to do and see. There is something for everyone including the LGBTQ community, artists, families, partiers, and more. I will be sure to highlight places to eat, drink, and where to stay.

Soak up the sun at St Petersburg FL beaches

There are multiple options for beaches around St. Petersburg FL, each has a different vibe so there is definitely something for everyone. There is only one dog-friendly beach, check it out below.

This beach is one of the most popular beaches for locals and tourists alike. It’s 15 minutes from downtown St. Petersburg FL, making it easy to access. There are multiple restaurants, shops, and bars to check out while you are there. There is even a beachfront bar that serves alcohol, burgers, snacks, and more.

st pete fl beach

Fort Desoto beach

If you are looking for a beach that is secluded AND has a dog-friendly beach, this is the perfect spot! It’s about a 25-minute drive from downtown St. Pete, with plenty of room for campers, RVs, and tents! The daily parking fee without a trailer is $5! We loved it because a short walk from the parking lot is the dog-friendly beach. There are signs after you enter the park that will lead you to the correct parking lot for the dog-friendly beach.

Treasure Island beach

Treasure Island beach is also a popular option for visitors and locals as it is only 20 minutes from downtown St. Pete. There are multiple bars/ restaurants to try in this area. Some popular choices are Caddy’s, Ricky T’s, Buoys. Caddy’s is waterfront and a great place for day drinking or sunset drinks. It usually draws a younger crowd. Ricky-T’s draws an older crowd. It still gets pretty packed and has sports bar vibes with an outdoor section. Buoys have a waterfront view of the bay, with a more sophisticated menu.

Pass-A-Grill beach

Pass-A-Grill is at the southernmost point of St. Pete’s beaches. The drive is beautiful and gives you a more scenic look at the area surrounding St. Petersburg FL. It’s located 25 minutes away from downtown St. Petersburg FL, and while you have to drive a little longer to get here you’ll enjoy the peace and tranquility this area has to offer.

Visit the Dali Museum  in St Petersburg FL

The Dali Museum is beautiful, modern, and Salvador Dali is anything but boring. You can easily spend 2-3 hours here looking at all the art and enjoying the cafe. They also have another room dedicated to another artist or photographer that they rotate out periodically. It’s next to the waterfront so you are surrounded by a view. The museum is only a 10-minute walk from St Pete Pier, which is also something everyone should check out. Try to book online before going, tickets can sell out quickly.

Kayak with Manatees

Crystal River and Three sisters springs are less than 2 hours of driving and it makes such an awesome day trip. You can rent clear kayaks and kayaks in the river among the Manatees and their babies! Manatees begin to migrate into the warmer waters in mid-November and stay up until around April. We went in November and saw so many manatees, and the weather was perfect, none of us got sunburnt!

If you want, you can sign up for a group kayaking tour and have a professional show you around all the hot spots for manatees. We preferred the kayaking tour versus a boat tour simply from a sustainability standpoint. The boats often come too close to the manatees and I don’t want to encourage any more injuries to these majestic animals. Even though they were going slow they would often come very close to them. Check out the Small-Group Kayak Tour here .

Walk the St Petersburg Sunken Gardens

Sunken Gardens is a short 5-minute drive from downtown St. Petersburg. These gardens were built 100+ years ago to showcase exotic plants and flowers from all over the world. You can easily make your way through the entirety of the gardens in an hour. It’s a beautiful maze of trees, plants, flowers, and even flamingos! This is a great place to have a picnic, or just enjoy the sunshine.

Experience the African American Museum

This museum is named after the man who inspired Black History Month and gives a unique insight into local African American culture St. Pete. It showcases the incredible Dr. Woodson, an African American civil rights activist, and historian. Step into this museum with a different lens, one that is unique to the African American experience, it’s a powerful museum and really gives a personal insight into the lives of so many. Be sure to check out the large Black Lives Matter mural that was created by local artists who are passionate about equal rights for all.

Food Tour Downtown St Petersburg FL

There are tons of food options to explore in downtown St Pete, but with this bicycle food tour , a local guide takes you to all the hidden gems that St. Pete has to offer.

Spend time at the St Petersburg FL Pier

St. Petersburg Pier is one of my favorite spots to take visitors as it is not like any other pier I have experienced. There is a large pathway that sports restaurants, a beach area with chairs, Saturday farmers markets, concerts, and more. Once you make it to the pier itself you’ll find that it is 2 stories tall and on the second floor there is a restaurant/ bar that turns into a club vibe on the weekends! There is also a beach area with chairs, and spacious common area with fountains kids can play in a walkway, and a beach area.

Keep walking past all these cool things and you’ll find small walkways with beautiful views of the water and the pier! This is definitely a place you can spend an entire Friday afternoon/ evening at.

st pete pier FL

Explore the Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

Take a quick trip outside the city to enjoy this extensive nature preserve. This preserve is massive (over 200 acres), and just 15 minutes from downtown St. Petersburg FL. The preserve is set up so you can walk or bike around the trails and boardwalks. I had no idea so much diversity existed this close to the city. There are alligators, birds, fish, and more. If you enjoy running, this is an awesome place to run with a view!

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK IN ST PETERSBURG FL

Of course, we couldn’t leave out the best part of the 4 days in St Petersburg FL Itinerary, food and drinks! Central Ave is where you will find the majority of bars and restaurants, with so many options it can feel overwhelming. Courtney and I have narrowed down the top favorites that we just keep going back to.

Black Crow Coffee: Favorite coffee in town, there are two locations in St Petersburg

Central Coffee Shoppe: Family-run diner with some classic hangover food, it’s been around since the ’70s and is a must while in town.

Brunch & Lunch

Wild Child: New brunch spot that offers craft cocktails, mimosas, and a delicious food menu.

The Lure: A sushi spot that does brunch right.

With several museums and art galleries, the city has all it takes to give vacationers a lengthy bucket list of things to do during their visit. Consider this the ultimate guide to vacationing in St. Petersburg, Florida.

1 St. Pete Pier

One fun spot to check out while in St. Petersburg is the all-new St. Pete Pier. Here, people can look out onto the beautiful blue Gulf of Mexico and enjoy the city's picturesque skyline. This pier extends into Tampa Bay from downtown St. Petersburg and is one of the more popular things to do while here.

The St. Pete Pier recently underwent a massive renovation, giving tourists an all-new property to check out during their vacation. There are also beaches nearby, so this is the perfect spot to spend a few hours during the afternoon.

Furthermore, St. Pete Pier recently underwent a reconstruction and renovation, meaning those who see it moving forward get to experience the all-new property. On top of the pier, there are also beaches nearby, making this a great stop before or after tanning and swimming.

Florida has some of the best beaches in the United States, making St. Petersburg the perfect place to enjoy them.

One thing to remember when visiting this pier and the beaches nearby is that parking can be difficult during weekends and holidays. Therefore, it might be a better idea to take a taxi/Uber/Lyft to the St. Pete Pier and then walk to the beach. This could end up saving the group trouble at the start or finish of their day in the sun.

2 Tropicana Field

Anyone wanting to watch a sports game while in St. Petersburg, they will likely be heading over to Tropicana Field. This is a multi-use sports arena located within the city of St. Pete. Here, people can experience a world-class stadium with drinks, food, memorabilia, and on-site parking.

According to the MLB , Tropicana Field's 1.1 million square feet include unique design features and fan amenities found nowhere else in the Major Leagues. This sets the venue apart from others in Florida, making it a hub for sports lovers near and far.

What makes this stadium nice is it is domed, meaning people in Florida can escape the summer heat and humidity while inside. There are many sports stadiums and arenas in Florida that are open to the natural elements, which can make watching a sports game uncomfortable during hotter months.

Therefore, if someone wants to see a baseball game, for instance, while in St. Pete, they want to come here.

3 St. Petersburg Saturday Morning Market

  • For the hours of this market, tourists can expect it to be open every Saturday from 9 AM to 2 PM.
  • Address: 230 1st St SE, St. Petersburg, FL 33701

Of course, there could be weather restrictions or other holidays to be aware of, which could affect the market hours. It's a good idea to keep a close eye on their website before heading out.

The St. Petersburg Saturday Morning Market is open weekly from 9 AM to 2 PM. This could be a nice way to support local businesses and creators and should be a few hours of fun. It's worth noting that because of the 2 PM closing time, people may want to head over here earlier than later in the afternoon. During peak seasons, the market can become heavily crowded, so that is another detail to remember.

Red Mesa Cantina

Take a trip to Red Mesa Cantina if you need to satisfy your Mexican craving while on vacation. From shredded beef tacos to burritos with steak-tips, Red Mesa has Mexican food down to a science.

The view from the newly renovated rooftop bar is also a great reason to eat at Red Mesa for lunch while in St. Pete. Both indoor and outdoor dining will suit your liking at this local favorite. On the weekends you can hear live music playing while you take one bite after the other out of your Sirloin Chorizo Burger, another classic Red Mesa dish.

Tapas and flatbreads? Some of the best sushi rolls? You’ll find a mix of everything at The Lure in downtown St. Pete. The laid-back atmosphere draws in the crowds during the weekends. And who can forget about all-you-can-drink $11 mimosas on Sundays? The Sunday brunch specials are especially fit for out-of-towners eager to try some new food!  You can also play a round of pool with your pals while you anxiously await a taste of The Lure’s mouthwatering staples.

Home to St. Pete’s best burgers, you can’t make a stop in the city without checking out the delicious menu at The Ave .   This place is also conveniently located next to Park and Rec which is one of the hottest late night bars in town. It’s easy, try one of the best burgers at The Ave and then stay a while until you walk over to Park and Rec a few hours later where you can play skee ball at this cool arcade bar.

St Pete isn’t just a place for old folks anymore, it’s a lively city packed with activities for young people, too. The Avenue considers itself to be a hip spot– always keeping up with food trends. The dishes definitely live up to their reputation.

Ah, Cuban food. If you want to escape the noisy and hectic streets of Miami to find authentic Cuban eats, just come to St. Pete instead where you can munch on a really good Cuban sandwich at Bodega.

The fresh made-to-order meals at Bodega are always complete with a sparkling glass of sangria. Make your way over to Bodega and walk right up to the window to order your lunch. Authentic plantains, rice, beans, a lot of flavor are all things to expect at this Latin American spot. The prices here are also reasonable if you are sticking to a budget on your trip.

Urban Brew & BBQ

Homemade barbeque = Urban Brew & BBQ.  Chef Chris whips up gourmet mac & cheese and smoked meat at his restaurant, Urban Brew & BBQ.  Definitely try “The Thing”.   It includes cornbread waffles, smoked pulled pork, cheddar cheese, slices of bacon, an egg, topped with bacon gravy!

You can’t have comfort food without mac ‘n cheese.  The Best of the Bay award was granted to Urban Brew for the best mac & cheese around as they host southern home cooking at its finest. Their in-house dishes will not disappoint.

True Italian food can be tasted at Il Ritorno. The menus are seasonal and Chef David puts his culinary background to the test in every new dish he brings out.  Pasta in this contemporary restaurant keeps guests satisfied because of the changing options. Flavorful Italian cuisine from scratch! Try the Mezze Rigatoni or the Roasted Duck Breast for dinner.

Birch & Vine

Another outstanding contemporary American restaurant to dine at is Birch & Vine. Located on bustling Beach Drive, Birch & Vine continues to be a top-rated evening restaurant for couples and families. If you need a spot for a date night, Birch & Vine makes the list.  Try the steak or salmon.

The ultimate tapas bar can be found at Annata Wine Bar. The atmosphere at Annata embodies elegance and sophistication and the meals always impress guests with their level of richness.

The extensive wine list will have you pleasantly surprised upon arrival. The cheese boards are what make Annata so famous, too. Expect a wide variety of appetizers to split among friends at Annata .

Mini Doughnut Factory

We take our doughnuts very seriously in the Sunshine State. Mini doughnuts, to be exact.  One of the newest dessert places to pop up in downtown St Pete is the Mini Doughnut Factory. You can stop in to pick up a handful of gourmet mini Donuts ranging from traditional birthday cake flavor to gooey chocolate peanut butter.

Each doughnut is homemade and fresh. Your custom creations will be ready to eat in seconds as they are dipped in sweet icing and topped with funky fruity pebbles, coconut flakes, or cotton candy pop rocks.
