How to Get From Interlaken to Mürren

Interlaken  is a world-famous town in Switzerland’s  Bernese Oberland.  Interlaken serves a great purpose as a  base  for visiting various tourist attractions in this region, including the nearby mountains. Specifically, you are close to Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau among many others.

From Interlaken , many people go to Mürren . Mürren is a romantic, car-free mountain resort in one of Switzerland’s most beautiful regions, the Bernese Oberland.  From its altitude of 1,645 meters, it provides a bird’s eye view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley below.

It is quite easy to get from  Interlaken  to  Mürren .

There are two ways to get to Mürren starting from Interlaken. The first and easier trip is via Grütschalp cable car. The second is a longer route via the Stechelberg cable car. However, the second option does allow you to travel through the Lauterbrunnen Valley, and see Staubbach Waterfall and Mürrenbach Waterfall before continuing to Mürren.

Let’s cover both options below.

How To Get From Interlaken to Mürren via Grütschalp

To get from Interlaken to Mürren via Grütschalp , you’ll have to take the following connections:

• First, in Interlaken Ost, take the regional train to  Lauterbrunnen .
• In Lauterbrunnen, follow the signs to transfer to the cable car heading to Grütschalp .
• In Grütschalp, transfer to the small train that leads you to Mürren .

How To Get From Interlaken to Mürren via Stechelberg

To get from Interlaken to Mürren via Stechelberg , you’ll have to take the following connections:

• In Lauterbrunnen, transfer to the bus that goes in the direction of Stechelberg . At Stechelberg, Schilthornbahn , get off the bus.
• In Stechelberg, transfer to the cable car that leads you to Gimmelwald .
• In Gimmelwald, you will take the connecting cable car to Mürren .

Is the Train From Interlaken to Mürren Scenic?

Although the trains do not have big panoramic windows like the Bernina Express and Glacier Express , the scenery going to Mürren is very picturesque.

Other Scenic Trains

In case you would like to check out other scenic trains, then there are three recommended below. These are the  Golden Pass Line ,  the   Glacier Express ,  and   the   Bernina Express .

Your other options in detail are the following:

• Golden Pass  – The Golden Pass departs from Lucerne. You would take a train from Zurich to Lucerne, then change to Interlaken. This is sometimes referred to as the east end of this route. The Golden Pass has panorama coaches and is scenic.
• Glacier Express  –  Glacier Express  is a long journey that starts from Zermatt, home of Matterhorn. It then traverses 291 bridges and 91 tunnels before stopping in St. Moritz. Both Zermatt and St. Moritz are beautiful mountain resorts worthy of a longer stay. The  Glacier Express  passes by several idyllic mountain villages.
• Bernina Express  –  Bernina Express  is another train route that begins in  Chur . Chur is the oldest alpine city in Switzerland and is worth visiting. This train route spans 196 bridges. It goes through 55 tunnels and passes 20 beautiful villages in Switzerland.

Yes, there are currently no restrictions for traveling from Interlaken to Mürren .

Can You Drive Into Mürren?

No, you cannot drive your car into Mürren . You will have to park your car in the Lauterbrunnen Valley Terminal or the Schilthornbahn Parking Lot . If you park at the Lauterbrunnen Valley Terminal, you can take the cable car to Grütschalp, and then the train to Mürren. If you park at the Schilthornbahn Parking Lot, you can take the cable cars to Gimmelwald, then Mürren.

Mürren is a car-free village accessible by public transportation.

Is Mürren Car-Free?

Yes, Mürren is a car-free village similar to Wengen and Zermatt. As you cannot take your car, you will have to park it at the Lauterbrunnen Valley Terminal or the parking lot near Schilthornbahn .

If you park at the Lauterbrunnen Valley Terminal , you can take the cable car to Grütschalp, and then the train to Mürren. If you park at the Schilthornbahn Parking Lot , you can take the cable cars to Gimmelwald, then Mürren.

How Do You Get Around in Mürren?

As Mürren is car-free, you cannot bring your car. However, if you need help with getting around, you can contact your hotel and they can arrange a small emission-free taxi for you. If you would like to arrange it yourself, you can call Stäger Transporte (Phone: +41 33 855 24 80 ) and Feuz Transporte (Phone: +41 33 855 18 70 ).

A trip to Interlaken isn’t complete without venturing up the magnificent Schilthorn mountain for close-up views of the Monch, Eiger and Jungfrau. Along the way , explor e the charming mountainside villages of Murren, Gimmelwald, and Lauterbrunnen . This epic day trip from Interlaken is logistically complicated, and includes a mixture of hiking and different forms of transportation. It may seem complicated at first glance, but we’ve outlined everything you need to know for a perfect day filled with adventure.

Day Trip from Interlaken: Schilthorn, Murren, Gimmelwald & Lauterbrunnen

This epic day trip from Interlaken culminates in a gondola ride up to Schilthorn, a peak rising to an elevation of 2,970 meters (9,744 feet) with unparalleled panoramic views of Switzerland’s big three: the Monch, the Eiger and Jungfrau.

The roundtrip journey to Schilthorn will take you through three charming Swiss villages: Murren, Gimmelwald and Lauterbrunnen, and through the stunning Lauterbrunnen Valley, home to 72 waterfalls.

If you are looking to escape the crowds and explore an authentically Swiss region with unbeatable alpine views, this is the adventure for you!

Day Trip from Interlaken | Detailed Itinerary

In the following section, we’ll provide details for the 11 steps (yes, 11 steps!) for the day trip from Interlaken to Schilthorn, Murren, Gimmewald, and Lauterbunnen. Please don’t let the number of steps discourage you – we promise it’s easier than it seems and totally worth it.

Step One | Train to Lauterbrunnen

• Travel time | 30 minutes
• Ticket cost | 8 CHF ($9) OR free with Swiss Pass

If you are staying in Interlaken, take the train from the Interlaken Ost station to Lauterbrunnen. If you are staying in Unterseen, take the train from the Interlaken West station.

The trip to Lauterbrunnen takes about 30 minutes, and trains depart every 30 minutes . If you have a Swiss Pass , the train tickets will be covered. Otherwise, tickets cost around $10

Step Two | Gondola to Grutschalp

• Travel time | 5 minutes
• Ticket cost | 9 CHF ($10) OR free with Swiss Pass

From the Lauterbrunnen train station, walk up the hill to the cable car station. Cable cars depart to Grutschalp every 30 minutes and the trip takes only 5 minutes.

You’ll return to Lauterbrunnen at the end of the day, so you have the option to explore the little town now, or when you come back. We chose to hop right on the gondola to Grutschalp to make sure we had enough time to complete the journey.

Step Three | Hike to Mürren

• Total time | 1 – 1.5 hours
• Distance | 2.8 miles
• Elevation Gain: 695 feet
• Difficulty | easy

To get to Mürren from Grutschalp, take a flat, easy 2.8 mile hike through rolling green farmland with stunning alpine views.

Along this hike, you’ll pass by happily-grazing cows and vibrant wildflowers while enjoying fresh mountain air and peaceful solitude that is disrupted only by the faint sound of cowbells ringing in the distance, all with the stunning backdrop of the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

To reach the trailhead, take a left out of the station when you arrive in Grutschalp and follow the gravel path.

If you prefer not to hike or are short on time, you can also take a tram from Grutschalp to Mürren . However, we would strongly recommend against skipping this hike. It was one of our favorite parts of the day and rewards you with an experience you just can’t get from a tram.

Picture in your mind an image of a quintessential Swiss village. Do you see dark brown chalets with shutters on the windows and colorful flowers perched on overhanging balconies, quiet streets with red Swiss flags hanging proudly, a glimpse of snow-capped mountains peeking out from behind the buildings?

If yes, you’re envisioning Mürren , a quaint, car-less Swiss town with a population of 450 permanent residents, situated at the base of Schilthorn Mountain and accessible only by cable car.

Step Four | Gondola to Birg

• Regular | 85.6 CHF ($96)
• With Swiss Pass | 42.80 CHF ($48)
• Travel time | 15 minutes

After you’ve explored Mürren, head to the gondola station located at the far end of town to begin your journey up to Schilthorn. You can purchase tickets in person at the station or in advance online.

The roundtrip ticket from Mürren to Schilthorn, stopping in Birg, costs $96 or $48 with a Swiss Pass. Gondolas depart every 30 minutes and the trip to Birg takes less than 15 minutes.

If you’re afraid of heights or claustrophobic, the gondola rides to Birg and Schilthorn may be unpleasant for you. People are packed like sardines into the gondola with standing room only, before being hoisted high into the air above the Schilthorn valley.

If you are not phased by tight crowds or heights, this will be a thrilling experience offering incredible views. Personally, I am a bit claustrophobic and started having a bit of a panic attack on one of these rides.

The only advice I can offer is to close your eyes, try to find a spot on the edge, and remember that it’ll be over in a few minutes – the views are worth it!

Birg Thrill Walk

Before continuing to Schilthorn, hop off the gondola in Birg, which is not much more than a gondola station, a small restaurant, viewing platform, and the Birg Thrill Walk.

Looking to get your adrenaline pumping? Take a walk on the Birg Thrill walk, a platform built right into the side of the mountain that has sections of glass floor, mesh tunnels to crawl through, and a wire net to climb across, that look hundreds of feet feet straight down.

It’s definitely worth the 20-30 minute detour!

Step Five | Gondola to Schilthorn

• Ticket Cost | already purchased
• Travel Time | 5 minutes

After exploring the Birg Thrill Walk, hop back on the gondola to continue your journey to Schilthorn. The trip is included in the tickets you bought in Mürren. This gondola ride is even shorter, taking only about 5 minutes to reach your final destination: Schilthorn.

Rising to an elevation of 2,970 meters (9,744 feet) above sea level, Schilthorn is one of the tallest peaks in the area and offers stunning 360 degree views of the Swiss Alps, most notably the Monch, the Eiger, and the Jungfrau.

Schilthorn is also famous for being the filming location for the 1969 James Bond movie, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

At the top of Schilthorn, there is a panoramic rotating restaurant, a viewing platform, and a Bond World 007 exhibit showing scenes from the movie and providing details about how the film was made.

This is also a popular spot for paragliding, so be on the look out for paragliders flying overhead.

Tip : Skip the restaurant and pack a lunch instead. As with most restaurants high on a mountain, the food is lackluster and overpriced. While the idea of a rotating restaurant may be cool, you can get all the same views by simply walking around the platform outside.

Step Six | Backtrack to Murren

Once you’ve had time to appreciate Schilthorn (you’ll probably want at least an hour), backtrack to Mürren by taking the gondola through Birg.

Step Seven | Hike from Mürren to Gimmelwald

• Distance | 1.7 miles
• Elevation Gain | 16 feet
• Total time | 1 hour

When you arrive back in Mürren, take an easy 1.7 mile hike to Gimmelwald , another charming small Swiss village. This hike features striking views of the steep mountainside and glacial waterfalls flowing down towards the floor of the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Similar to Mürren in many ways, Gimmelwald is a small, car-free village perched just above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Be sure to stop into the Honesty Shop, where there is no clerk and you’re expected to simply leave cash for the items you purchase – be honest!

Step Eight | Gondola to Stechelberg

• Ticket cost | 6 CHF ($7) OR free with Swiss Pass

After exploring Gimmelwald, take one last gondola down to Stechelberg. Stechelberg is located on the floor of the Lauterbrunnen Valley. From here its an easy walk back to Lauterbrunnen, with a brief stop at Trummelbach Falls – ten glacial waterfalls inside a cave on the side of the mountain.

Step Nine | Hike to Trummelbach Falls

• Ticket cost : 14 CHF for adults, 6 CHF for children
• Operating Hours | daily 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM from April to November, daily 8:30 AM to 6:00 July, and August
• Hiking Distance | 1.8 miles

The walk from Stechelberg to Trummelbach falls is 1.8 miles, and adds less than half a mile to the entire walk back to Lauterbrunnen. The walk is flat and should take around 30 minutes. Tickets to Trummelbach Falls costs 14 CHF, and the falls close at 5:00 PM so be sure to leave enough time at the end of the day if you wish to visit.

Also be on the lookout for base jumpers taking off from the cliffs surrounding the Lauterbrunnen Valley. This is a popular area for thrill-seekers to hone their skills, sometimes resulting in tragic consequences (our Airbnb host warned us of the perils of base jumping!).

Step Ten | Hike to Lauterbrunnen

• Hiking Distance | 1.7 miles

From Trummelbach Falls to Lauterbrunnen is another flat and easy 1.7 mile walk. If you choose to skip Trummelbach Falls, the entire walk from Stechelberg to Lauterbrunnen is 3.2 miles. While there is a bus that runs between Stechelberg and Lauterbrunnen, we recommend walking, as the entire journey through the Lauterbrunnen Valley is beautiful with huge cliffs and waterfalls on all sides.

Step Eleven | Train back to Interlaken

When you arrive back in Lauterbrunnen, spend some time exploring the town if you haven’t already. Then hop back on a train to return to Interlaken.

Planning Your Interlaken Day Trip

In the section below, we’ll cover all the logistics to help you plan your trip to Schiltorn, Murren, Gimmelwald and Lauterbrunnen from Interlaken.

How Much Time Do I Need?

This trip can easily be done as a day trip from Interlaken. Depending how much you hike versus take public transportation and how long you spend at each location, expect the entire trip to take between 5 and 8 hours .

We completed the entire trip as described in this article in about 6 hours.

The gondolas to Schilthorn run year round, so its possible to do this trip at any time. However, temperatures at Schilthorn were chilly even in the middle of June so the trip wouldn’t be quite as enjoyable in the winter.

Even in May, there is likely to still be snow covering the hiking trails. For best weather and hiking conditions, we recommend going between June and September.

Modifications to the Trip

If you aren’t interested in hiking, you can take a train from Grutschalp to Murren, a gondola from Murren to Gimmelwald and a bus from Stechelberg to Lauterbrunnen.

If you would like to hike more, you can hike from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp and Gimmelwald to Stechelberg.

Skip Trummelbach Falls if you are pressed for time.

Tips for a Great Trip

• Lines for the Schilthorn gondola can be very long. To save time, you can start early in the morning or schedule a boarding time for an additional 5 CHF.
• Pack lunch to enjoy on Schilthorn . This will help save money by avoiding eating at the Schilthorn restaurant.
• Get a Swiss Pass . If you are traveling in Switzerland for at least a few days, its probably worthwhile. On this trip, the gondolas to Schilthorn are 50% off with a Swiss Pass and the rest of the transportation is completely covered.
• Pack layers . It may be warm and sunny in Interlaken, but plan for cooler temperatures and strong winds on Schilthorn.

Schilthorn or jungfraujoch.

Another popular day trip from Interlaken is to take a train up to Jungfraujoch, the top of the famous Jungfrau and the highest train station in Europe. While Jungrfraujoch offers great views, we recommend skipping it in favor of Schilthorn for a couple reasons:

• Visiting Schilthorn is significantly cheaper. Most of the journey is covered by the Swiss Pass. The entire round trip from Interlaken to Schilthorn, including all intermediate stops, will cost only 42.80 CHF ($48) with a Swiss Pass or 108.6 CHF ($120) if you don’t have a Swiss Pass. While this may seem costly, the round trip from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch will set you back 159 CHF ($179) even with a Swiss Pass or 210 CHF ($237) without a Swiss Pass.
• Schilthorn offers the best views of the Monch, Eiger, and Jungfrau. Even better than being on top of Jungfrau is seeing it towering over the Monch and Eiger in the distance.
• The hikes through the countryside alone are worth the trip. The tiny villages of Murren and Gimmelwald are so perfectly Swiss. The waterfalls of the Lauterbrunnen Valley are simply breathtaking. Schilthorn aside, this day trip is still incredible.

Thanks for this wonderful and informative post. I, my wife and 10-years old daughter are visiting Interlaken in June and will definitely likely to try this tour. I have some questions and need your guidance: 1. The tour involves 4 hikes (1 hike for 1 hour and rest three for 30 mins each). We may not be able to take all hikes and may opt for train/ bus for some of these. Can you please suggest which hike we should prefer and which one we can skip. 2. If we take a bus from Stechelberg, will the bus stop at Trummelbach Falls so that we can disembark there and take another bus after visiting Trummelbach Falls. 3. How to schedule a boarding time for Schilthorn gondola and in case we are not able to reach there at the scheduled time, what will be the consequences.

4. Also, can you suggest some our place around Interlaken which can be done in 5-6 hours through train (not hiking). 5. If we are taking the tour suggested by you, does it make sense to go to Grindelwald. Not interested in Harder Kulm. 6. I found this article on internet, but could not select one.

If I had to pick one more, I’d probably say Trummelbach to Lauterbrunnen. 2. Yes, there is a bus that runs from Stechelberg to Trummelbach Falls. It departs every 30 minutes. If Lucerne isn’t already on your itinerary, it’d be a great option, especially if you don’t want to like! It’s about 1 hour by train from Interlaken. It’s a really pretty little town. Hi Nilesh, we’re so jealous you’re headed to Switzerland! Our all time favorite place. It’s amazing. I’m pretty sure you’ll need to show your Swiss pass at every station but I can’t 100% remember. The Swiss are usually very organized so I’d expect you will and it easy enough to carry around in your wallet or pocket anyways. Definitely better to be safe than sorry. I’d definitely recommend bringing it with you.

Your route to Mürren

However you choose to travel to the region, Mürren is a car-free village that can only be reached from Lauterbrunnen by public transport, on foot or by bike.

From Interlaken Ost station, it takes 53 minutes to get to Mürren. The blue and yellow Bernese Oberland Railways (BOB) train will take you to Lauterbrunnen. You need to board at the front of the train, because the back section splits off at Zweilütschinen and heads to Grindelwald. You then have two options. Via Grütschalp (gondola cableway and train): at Lauterbrunnen station, you take the gondola cableway to Grütschalp. Here, you’ll transfer to a small train that will take you to Mürren. The journey from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren takes about 20 minutes. Alternative route via Stechelberg (bus and gondola cableway): in Lauterbrunnen, take the bus towards Stechelberg as far as the Schilthornbahn station. Then take the gondola cableway to Mürren via Gimmelwald. This journey takes about 30 minutes in total.

Mürren is a car-free village. If you are travelling by car, you must leave your car in Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg and take public transport from there. The journey from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen takes 20 to 30 minutes (depending on the season), and it takes 25 to 35 minutes to get from Interlaken to Stechelberg. In winter, expect snow-covered roads and black ice.

In Stechelberg, there is a car park directly at the bottom station of the Schilthorn cableway. There is also a multi-storey car park below Lauterbrunnen station. Alternatively, you can use the car park at the church. There is a bus from here to the station every half hour. There is also a free-of-charge ski bus that runs in winter. On foot it takes 10 to 15 minutes to arrive.

How to get to the Jungfrau Region

The Jungfrau Region in the Bernese Oberland has excellent public transport connections for whichever mode of transport you use to get here. Mürren is a car-free village that can only be reached from Lauterbrunnen by public transport, on foot or by bike.

Zurich Airport There are direct trains from Zurich Airport to Interlaken Ost every two hours. There are also various other connections with changes in Bern to choose from. Travel time: approximately two hours

Basel Airport A bus will take you to Basel train station in about 15 minutes. Direct trains depart from Basel train station to Interlaken Ost five times a day. There are also various other connections with changes in Bern or Spiez to choose from.

Travel without lugging luggage Want to make your journey a little more relaxing? If you are flying to/from Zurich or Geneva, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) can transport your suitcases, bags or skis from the airport directly to your hotel or holiday apartment – and back again, of course. Here's how!

Situated at the heart of Europe, Switzerland boasts one of the world’s best railway networks, with direct international train connections from more than 12 countries. Within Switzerland, you can take direct trains from Zurich and Basel to Interlaken Ost, giving you access to the Jungfrau Region. If you’re starting from Geneva, you’ll need to change trains at Bern. Interlaken Ost is also the final stop of the ICE line Frankfurt-Braunschweig-Berlin, and of the EC line Karlsruhe-Mainz-Cologne-Düsseldorf-Amsterdam.

There are also buses in Grindelwald ( Grindelwald Bus ), in the Haslital ( PostBus and Engstlenalp Bus ) and in Lauterbrunnen ( PostBus ).

In the summer, you can buy a Bernese Oberland Travel Pass to use public transport for 3, 4, 6, 8 or 10 days. It is valid on almost all public transport in the Bernese Oberland and gets you discounts on trips to Valais, Central Switzerland and even as far as Lake Geneva. You can purchase a Bernese Oberland Regional Pass at tourist info centres and train station ticket counters.

For unlimited travel throughout Switzerland, we recommend the Swiss Travel Pass . For families, the Junior Travel Pass is of interest, It’s available at train station ticket offices, post offices and tourist offices.

The SBB Luggage Special is an option for having your luggage picked up at any address in Switzerland and transported to select hotels (and back again) within two days.

You can relax and be environmentally friendly by travelling on public transport. Then you can discover the Jungfrau Region by bike. Want to take your own mountain bike or road bike with you? No problem. SBB will transport your bike from station to station. You can also take it with you on the train and on many buses. You can find all the information here .

You can reach the Jungfrau Region by car from Basel/Zurich/Geneva via Bern or from Lucerne via the Brünig Pass (open in summer and winter). Approaching from the south, you can reach the Bernese Oberland via the Grimsel or Susten Pass (only open in summer) or via the Simplon Pass (followed by the Lötschberg car shuttle train).

Our top tip: Park your car at one of the approximately 600 SBB P+Rail stations and then simply hop on a train to the Jungfrau Region. In winter, you get 50 per cent off the weekend parking fee.

Interlaken to Murren

Our family needs to be in Murren by 2pm and our train will reach Interlaken Ost around 12:49. Will we have enough time to make it? Any helpful hints are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Train (1) is too early. (2) looks like the train which is the official connection from your incoming train. But it arrives in Mürren at 13:58. Technically you have made it, but where do you have to be in Mürren? How far is it from the station?

The train from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen where you need to go to catch the gondola to Grutschlapp and then the train to Murren currently leaves at 13:05 arriving at Murren at 13:58.

We are hoping to take the Golden Pass from Montreux that morning (we are landing in Geneva late the night before). We can get to Interlaken much earlier if we don't take the Golden Pass.

What will be missing if we take a regular train from Geneva - Interlaken? Would it be better to skip the Golden Pass and give ourselves some cushion getting to Murren?

Why do you need to be in Mürren by 2:00 pm? What happens if you are 5 minutes late?

If it is important, take an earlier train from Montreux. You can ride a regular regional train over the same tracks as the Golden Pass train. It just won't have the special cars but the scenery is the same.

All rail routes in Switzerland have at least one train per hour, including the Golden Pass route (Montreux - Zweisimmen - Spiez - Interlaken). When you look up train times on the SBB or any other rail planner, it always finds the quickest route (not necessarily the shortest, but the quickest). If you look up Geneva to Interlaken, it will route you through Bern, going round the Alps and taking approx 2h50. If you want to follow the Golden Pass route (either in the named tourist train, or on one of the normal hourly trains), you need to add "via Zweisimmen". I did a search Geneva to Mürren via Zweisimmen:

So yes, there are earlier trains if you are prepared to leave Geneva earlier. Or, you can go by the quicker route via Bern, instead of the scenic Golden Pass route. The slow scenic Golden Pass route is costing you an extra 2 hours.

When are you taking this trip? On the SBB website it says:

Construction work: Montbovon - Château-d'Oex Between Montbovon and Château-d'Oex, no train services are operating. Replacement bus services are operating Montbovon - Château-d'Oex. The transportation of bicycles and of wheel chairs is not allowed. The connections are not guaranteed. Duration from 13.03.2018 05:00 until 02.06.2018 05:00.

I'm re-waking this post... Thank you for all the help so far.

We decided to take our chances with the Golden Pass route, so we'll have 15 minutes to make our connection in Interlaken OST. Is it worth purchasing our tickets for Interlaken to Murren ahead of time or can we get them when we arrive? Thank you!

Why wait until Interlaken Ost to get those tickets? There's a chance of a long line for tix at that station, and then you'd miss the next train. (They go every half hour to Lauterbrunnen.)

If you are buying your Golden Pass tix in Geneva, just ask them to add on the Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen "any time" tickets. They speak perfect English there so they'll know what you mean. (Most Swiss tix are "any time" that day tix, except for the few that are on sale and pre-bought.Those sale tix, or reserved seats, are only good for the time specified.)

14 Epic Things To Do In Interlaken, Switzerland

S witzerland is amazing. I know that seems simple but listen it is unreal. We have traveled a lot – full time for 8 years and it takes something special to wow us now. Well Switzerland did it, over and over again! There are so many epic things to do in Interlaken, Switzerland!! Let’s get into it.

Interlaken is a great location for exploring the Bernese Alps area of Switzerland (also known as Bernese Oberland), which includes the magical town of Lauterbrunnen . When you are planning a trip to Europe you will want to add Interlaken to your list of stops.

Interlaken Overview

Interlaken is located between 2 stunning lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. And by stunning I mean water color that is so blue it looks like it was colored with dye! Plus waterfalls and mountains. I mean it is magical!

Interlaken is by the Jungfrau region of the Swiss Alps. Like I had mentioned we have been to some pretty epic mountains but the Swiss Alps are AMAZING. In the Jungfrau region you will find the famous 3 sisters: Eiger, Mönch and Jungrau peaks.

Story Of the Mountains

There are a variety of legends around these mountains and some will say it is actually a Father, Son and Daughter. In any case the base of the legend is that these 3 mountains were actually giants that were rude to a mountain troll. The mountain troll cursed them and that turned them into the mountains covered in ice and snow.

Whatever the real story is their grandeur and beauty is unmatchable!

The Eiger is the easternmost of the three peaks and is known for its steep north face. The peak stands at 3,970 meters (13,025 feet) and is often covered in snow and ice.

The Mönch is located in the center of the group and is slightly lower than the Eiger, standing at 4,107 meters (13,474 feet).

The Jungfrau is the highest of the three peaks, standing at 4,158 meters (13,642 feet). There is a popular train that takes visitors up to the Jungfraujoch, a saddle between the Mönch and Jungfrau peaks that is often referred to as the “Top of Europe”. More on that below!

From Interlaken you can take scenic train rides, get into all sorts of adventure sports with paragliding being a top choice. Or just spend your time taking in all of the natural beauty. There is also a

Jungfrau ski region that is pretty epic.

Getting Around

The city of Interlaken is a great base location for exploring this part of Switzerland. The trains in Switzerland are well run and were some of the nicest trains we went on during our time in Europe.

Interlaken has the Interlaken Ost Railway Station and the Interlaken West Train Station. It is a quick train ride from one to the other in Interlaken. We took the train from the Ost station to get to Lauterbrunnen.

You can easily walk around Interlaken but if you want to get out to some of the mountain towns you will have to take a train, taxi or bus and to get there plus some trams. It seems like a lot and seems confusing but once you are there it really isn’t and people are helpful at the train/tram stations to help!

We always found it was best to go to the train station to ask the workers what pass we needed or what train we should book. Ok not just train but also cable car or funicular or cogwheel train – ha! It does take some effort to get up into the mountains but it is totally worth it.

If you are coming into Switzerland from Italy we recommend taking the Bernina Express . It is the coolest train ride we have ever been on!

Things To Do In Interlaken

Here we will cover things to do in Interlaken and also things that you can do in the surrounding area. From epic boat rides to the amazing views it is time to visit Interlaken!

Lake Brienz

We had a 3 month unlimited Eurail pass. With this pass we were able to get on the Lake Brienz boat tour for free! Sweet! We made a stop at the boat dock to confirm this and to secure the time we should come back to go on the boat.

We had 2nd class Eurail passes which meant we had to sit in the 2nd glass part of the boat. It was fine. But the 1st class part was right at the front of the boat and would have been a sweet spot to sit!

We headed out on the boat and couldn’t get enough of the bright blue water of the lake!

Giessbach Waterfall

Or plan was to go to the Giessbach Waterfall . That meant we would get off the boat at the Grand Hotel Giessbach stop and take the funicular up the side of the mountain to get to the historic hotel.

From there we would walk over to do the Giessbach Waterfall trail. You don’t have to go on the trail to see the waterfall you can see it from the hotel. But if you want to walk up and over the waterfall and have epic views back down at the hotel and lake you need to walk up to the top of the waterfall.

It is about a 1.5 mile hike and you are going uphill pretty much the whole way in switch back style. It is worth it so just do it!! The views were unreal and some of the prettiest we have ever seen.

After that walk back down to the hotel and make a stop to grab a snack before either getting on the funicular to head back down to the boat dock. Or walk down from the hotel. It is pretty walk and not that hard.

It is a half mile hike and also means you don’t have to wait for the funicular.

At this point you can either wait for the boat to come or you can take the 3.5 mile walk along the lake shore to the town of Iseltwald and pick up the boat there. We opted to do the walk.

Note you have to be aware of the boat times. They only stop at certain times and they end for the day pretty early. Be aware so you know how much time you have for walking!! We were a bit stressed and did a pretty quick walk just to be sure we got to Iseltwald in time for the boat.

This was a super cute town and if we had known how cute it was we would have planned to spend more time here or even stayed overnight!

It was hard to decide between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun. In the end we picked Lake Brienz because I always go for the blue water and waterfalls! But I would 100% go back to visit Lake Thun.

Funky Chocolate Club

If you love chocolate you won’t want to miss the the Funky Chocolate Club! It is a chocolate workshop and café that offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the history and production of Swiss chocolate while also creating your own chocolate creations.

The workshop includes a guided tour of the chocolate-making process, where you can see the different stages of chocolate production and learn about the various types of chocolate. After the tour you can try your hand at making your own chocolate creations, under the guidance of a professional chocolatier.

In addition to the chocolate workshop, the Funky Chocolate Club also features a café where you can sample a variety of chocolate treats, such as truffles, pralines, and hot chocolate.

St Beatus Cave

St. Beatus Cave is a natural cave system that has been open to the public since 1904 and is named after Saint Beatus, an Irish monk who, according to legend, lived in the cave and fought a dragon that terrorized the area.

The cave system consists of a series of underground chambers and passages. You can explore the cave with the help of a guide, who will provide information about the geology, history, and legends associated with the cave.

The cave has stunning rock formations, underground waterfalls, and deep pools of crystal-clear water. There are also a variety of stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over thousands of years and create unique shapes and patterns.

You can also take a boat ride on an underground lake!

Lauterbrunnen

You can take the train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen. Let me just say this – do it!! Lauterbrunnen is amazing.

When you are here you can stop at one of the many restaurants and get some cheese fondue. You can also walk the trails here to see the waterfalls that are located right outside of town.

Lauterbrunnen is situated in a deep valley surrounded by towering cliffs. There are also 72 waterfalls in the area cascading down the walls.

You could spend a day in Lauterbrunnen enjoying the shops, restaurants and scenery or use it as a base to explore the mountain villages and the famous mountain top locations.

We took a tram up to the mountain village of Murren and didn’t have a plan besides walking around the village. We found a playground for the kids to play on and a cute coffee shop where we got coffee and a pastry while the kids played a giant chess game.

The views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains and the Swiss Alps all around us were gorgeous and we loved the fresh mountain air!

Grimmelwald

From Murren we walked to Grimmelwald. It was a 30 minute downhill hike to get there from Murren and it was a gorgeous walk with the mountains and paraglides all around us.

When we got to town we found that they had honesty shops all over the town where you could check out the properties products from cheese to meat and sometimes souvenir type things. You pay what they have for the prices by just leaving your money in a box (with all the other money other people have left!). We loved this concept and that people here trust people!

We got some cheese and meats and were so excited to try everything.

Mountain Hostel

Next up we came to the Montain Hostel. They served delicious pizza and drinks and we sat at a picnic table with epic views out over the mountains.

We all said the next time we come to Switzerland we are going to stay in Murren or Grimmelwald!

It takes a minute to get here and multiple trains and trams but it was worth it! You get to the top of the mountain – at the location where one of the James Bond movies was filmed. There is a museum and experience there all about the movie and how it was filmed there.

There is also a restaurant that rotates. So you can sit and eat while the restaurant slowly rotates around and gives you all the epic views with the floor to ceiling windows. The kids said it was one of the coolest things we had ever done!

There is also a lookout platform where you can walk out to take in the mountain views and to walk the skiers going down the hill.

On the tram on the way to the top you can stop at Birg to get out and do the Thrill Walk! This is a walk that takes you around the mountain on a walkway and some other fun things like a tunnel to crawl through and a tight rope walk.

It was an amazing experience and we loved every minute of it. Take note that we did need to make reservations for eating – and almost missed it! So be sure to book early. You also need tickets to get up here so make sure you do all of your research so know when you need to book everything.

Jungraubahn Train

Take a train ride on the highest railway to the highest train station in Europe. You will have epic views on your way up but will also go through a tunnel for part of it where it will be dark. The ride is long from the bottom to the top. For this reason we opted to do the Schilthorn instead.

Ideally I would have liked to do both! So we could compare them. Once you reach the top there is a snack bar and a variety of activities if the Snow Fun Park is open. There are also a variety of hiking options when you are at the top.

Tummelbach Falls

You can walk here from Lauterbrunnen and we recommend that since it is a gorgeous walk in the valley. Once you get to Tummelbach you will take an elevator up to platform 6 and walk a few more platforms up before turing around and making the walk back down. Following the roaring falls through the mountain!

Walk Around Interlaken

Another option is to walk around the town of Interlaken. When we were there in April there were gorgeous flowers all over the place. There are also nice shops and restaurants all over town. Plus the epic mountain views!! You can also walk along the Aare River.

Harder Kulm

If you are into epic views you will want to make it up to Harder Klum. You can get there quickly on a funicular ride or take a hike to reach the top.

Where To Stay

This is where we stayed . It was a very budget friendly option and was right by the West train station. It worked out well for us since we weren’t in our room much at all! Bring by the Ost train station would have been a bit more convenient. But given the cost of the rooms we made it work!
