That’s our list of the most innovative new lightweight travel trailers of 2022. These small RV models are big on affordability, convenience, and amenities.

As a bonus, the features are packaged in a small camper footprint. In most cases, you won’t need to purchase a tow vehicle for these trailers. To find out how much weight your car can pull, open your vehicle’s manual. Look for the maximum trailer towing capacity and you’ll find the answer.

Why lightweight travel trailers are in demand

If you’re thinking about buying one of these lightweight travel trailers, you’re in good company. Demand for big and small RV models is soaring.

For example, according to the latest issue of RV RoadSigns , the quarterly sales forecast published by the RV Industry Association (RVIA), RV manufacturers are still scrambling to meet consumer demand that started in 2020. This year, more than 600,000 new RVs will be sold. These figures are all-time high that will exceed the record-breaking RV sales of 2021.

“The remarkable production from the RV manufacturers and suppliers is nothing like we have ever seen before, and our new forecast shows the record-breaking streak will continue,” said RVIA President and CEO Craig Kirby.

Editor’s note: RV manufacturer materials costs are constantly increasing. The current base costs for the small, light travel trailers on our list may have changed since the time of this writing (Q4 2021).

Things To Consider When Purchasing a Travel Trailer Under 3,500 lbs?

If you are considering purchasing a Travel Trailer under 3,500 lbs, we recommend two courses of action.

  • If you have never owned a small camper before we recommend that you rent one before you buy one. Susan and I did this, and it worked out great for us. 15 Best Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 3,500 lb

Some of these travel trailers under 3500 lbs are truly unique and exciting additions to an already massive market.

With the growing popularity of these economical, versatile, and easy-to-tow travel trailers, you can stake out your next adventure in style and leisure while operating on a smaller footprint.

1. Airstream Basecamp

Airstream Basecamp Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

Our Pros and Cons

✅ Airstream maintains its well-known, incredible aesthetic on the inside as well as out

⛔ Off-road packages are not much of an off-road upgrade, especially with sensitive components

  • Length: 16′ 2″
  • UVW: 2,650 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,500 lbs
  • CCC: 850 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 410 lbs

Airstream took its old, classical aesthetic and flipped it around on its head with the Airstream Basecamp . Relaying their classical aluminum exteriors to the interiors is a joy to look at, if you dig shiny walls and a clean, metallic look. The massive, panoramic windows on the front are a huge plus, especially if you take it off-road and find some incredible scenery.

This RV packs everything you need for going off-grid, though you may want to upgrade the underbelly with something a little more resilient to off-road adventures. A standard wet bath, two-burner stove, dining area, bed, counter space, and storage are all packed into a 16-footer.

2. r-pod 171C

r-pod 171C Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Lightweight, highly water-resistant Azdel walls that are lightweight and durable

⛔ Aftermarket options necessary to run the A/C boondocking or off-grid

  • Length: 19′
  • UVW: 2,449 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,725 lbs
  • CCC: 2,276 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 325 lbs

Forest River took the classical, DIY teardrop exterior aesthetic and amped it up a notch with their r-pods , which are really just giant teardrops with more of the features on the inside rather than the outside.

The bathroom is a wet bath, but it’s large enough that you don’t have to sit on your toilet to shower.

The refrigerator is large for the size of the camper, with a large, convertible dinette and a sideways queen bed on the opposite end.

Since r-pods went with the Azdel walls, they are far more durable and long-lasting, with less preventative maintenance throughout the seasons.

3. Rockwood Geo Pro G15RD

Rockwood Geo Pro G15RD Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Dexter Torflex Torsion Axle and indie suspension is standard (Nice!)

⛔ Known for having a loud air conditioner that resounds throughout the RV

  • UVW: 2,883 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,325 lbs
  • CCC: 1,442 lbs

Another Forest River entry on our list is the Rockwood Geo Pro, which sounds pretty bad to the bone for a camper title.

This particular model features a sideways bunk house in the rear and a convertible U-dinette, both of which sleep up to four. It’s an excellent option for short-term family adventures, whether you’re bringing the kids or rocking some big dogs.

The U-dinette fits square against the bunks, with the remainder of the kitchen appliances and furniture continuing with the flow of the U-shape around the RV.

This makes for more room in the center, where all the day-to-day work and activities take place. It’s a smooth idea that really works, keeping you from feeling constrained when indoors for long periods.

4. Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 12FBX

Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 12FBX Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Includes an AlphaPly roof membrane with gutters for catching rainwater

⛔ No bathroom sink

  • Length: 18′ 6″
  • UVW: 2,839 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,910 lbs
  • CCC: 1,071 lbs

The Palomino Puma Ultra-Lite 12 FBX may carry the Puma name, but it has the shape and versatility of a bulldog. It’s lightweight, yet wide enough and long enough to accommodate all the features we expect in travel trailers under 3500lbs these days.

It’s the tiny things that count and the lengthy design of the dinette, sideways queen, and corner bathroom all work to maximize the central living space.

This Puma does it a little differently than the previous entry, but it accomplishes the same level of space and comfort where it doesn’t seem like there should be any.

5. Scamp 13

Scamp 13 Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Multiple floorplans with Standard and Deluxe additions to boot

⛔ Air conditioner isn’t standard

  • Length: 13′
  • GVWR: 1,500 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 150 lbs

The tried and true Scamp 13 is the quintessential travel trailer under 3500lbs. Scamp has been around for a long time and they’re known for constructing fiberglass behemoths writ small, that can take on just about anything you throw at them.

The Scamp 13 features more than one floor plan, with the addition of standard and deluxe models, depending on how bougie you want to get.

The designs are solid and comfortable, and feature the level of customization you want for either long-term use or short and sweet vacations.

6. inTech Sol Eclipse

inTech Sol Eclipse Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Large amount of kitchen space for its size

⛔ No dedicated bed, like the Horizon

  • Length: 17′
  • UVW: 2,775 lbs
  • CCC: 770 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 445 lbs

The inTech Sol Eclipse is one of the most exciting and off-grid-ready travel trailers under 3500lbs on the market. There are multiple models under the inTech lineup, with the Eclipse being one of the more popular variations.

Interior space is maximized and simplified, leaving plenty of room for you to make it your own.

The 32-gallon black and gray water tanks, 35-A converter, Dexter torsion axles, all-aluminum triple tube cage frame, 28-gallon freshwater tank, panoramic windshield, and aggressive tread are all combined for the pinnacle in off-road and off-grid adventures. This is the travel trailer you want to pull when going well out into the boonies.

7. Jayco Jay Flight 195RB

Jayco Jay Flight 195RB - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Includes electric, self-adjusting brakes

⛔ A/C unit is known for being a little too loud

  • Length: 21′ 10″
  • UVW: 2,940 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,750 lbs
  • CCC: 810 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 270 lbs

This Jayco Jay Flight has the interior feel of an RV much larger than typical travel trailers under 3500lbs. The interior is designed with a corner bathroom, a walk-in wardrobe, and a parallel queen, the latter of which features plenty of room to move around.

As a lightweight travel trailer, that feeling of size is an impressive accomplishment. The bathroom is sizeable as well, though Jayco left out a sink next to the shower. It’s a dry bath as well, which is often hard to find in a travel trailer within this class.

8. Venture Sonic Lite SL150VRB

Venture Sonic Lite SL150VRB Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Panoramic automatic window is excellent if you like views and spring breezes

⛔ No dedicated sitting area for dining or entertainment

  • Length: 19′ 11″
  • UVW: 3,180 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,885 lbs
  • CCC: 705 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 480 lbs

This little camper features a massive rear bathroom, which takes up roughly 1/3 of the entire RV. However, the Venture Sonic doesn’t skimp on the remaining 2/3 either.

The remaining space is utilized very well, with a parallel Murphy bed (which features a free-standing table for dining), a two-burner stove, sink, and 8 ft³ fridge.

Thanks to the Murphy bed and lack of a traditional dinette, the space in the center of the camper is large and comfortable.

There’s also plenty of cabinetry and storage, with a passthrough on the exterior, a row of overhead cabinets over the stove, and another row of overhead cabinets over the bed.

9. Wildwood 164RBLE

Wildwood 164RBLE Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ AccessiBelly feature is amazing in terms of protection and accessibility for repair work

⛔ TV mount is at a harsh right angle, over the queen bed in the front

  • Length: 20′
  • UVW: 2,819 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,880 lbs
  • CCC: 1,061 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 380 lbs

One of the most attractive qualities of the Wildwood 164RBL E is the bright and cheery interior. Stepping inside is like stepping into a breath of fresh air, even if it’s not a very large travel trailer. As you can see in the above floorplan, a lot is going on inside as well.

The 11 ft³ fridge is a huge benefit, especially if you need the extra food for a lot of boondocking or going off-grid.

The bathroom takes up the back 1/5 of the RV, though there’s plenty of room to keep it a dry bath with a sink, toilet, and sizeable shower.

10. Travel Lite Rove Lite 16RB

Travel Lite Rove Lite 16RB Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Traditional travel trailer at a mind-blowing sub-2,000lbs

⛔ Black tank size is very underwhelming at 5 gallons

  • Length: 18′ 9″
  • UVW: 2,020 lbs
  • CCC: 1,480 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 154 lbs

Sometimes simple is better and, when it comes to travel trailers under 3500lbs, it’s often a good idea to simplify things. The Travel Lite Rove Lite 16RB is both simple and streamlined while retaining a full-featured RV status.

There are some interesting things to get used to in this model, and some that RVers may not like.

For instance, instead of cabinet doors, the Travel Lite features a strong mesh net across all the cabinet openings. There’s also a small black tank instead of a cartridge toilet, which means shorter periods away from home or a campground.

11. Safari Condo Alto 1723

Safari Condo Alto 1723 Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Nearly half the Safari Condo Alto is a wild array of windows

⛔ This is a very different aesthetic and may not be for everyone

  • Length: 17′ 3″
  • GVWR: 1,867 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: N/A

This is easily the most unique-looking RV on our travel trailers under 3500lbs list. The Safari Condo Alto is a window-full masterpiece. If you like to see everything around you while never stepping foot outside, this is the camper for you.

The lightweight frame, compact design, and interesting floorplans make this RV a lot of fun and an interesting choice for those looking at travel trailers in this class.

You can literally eat lunch underneath a driving rain, and this camper isn’t known for leaking either. There are limitations on storage and holding tanks, but this remains an excellent off-road adventure choice for single occupants, couples, and small families.

12. Coachmen Clipper 15CBH

Coachmen Clipper 15CBH Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Excellent interior space for travel trailers under 3500lbs

⛔ Lack of windows throughout, with the existing ones being fairly small

  • Length: 17′ 10″
  • UVW: 2,644 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,830 lbs
  • CCC: 1,186 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 330 lbs

Coachmen Clippers make for excellent travel trailers under 3500lbs. Unlike most of the other campers on our list, the floorspace on the Clipper is a sideways L-shape, like an elongated hallway that ends in a sizeable bathroom and a very large shower.

The bathroom occupies the corner space while the two bunkbeds take up the opposite corner. All of your typical kitchen amenities are present making this a very complete travel trailer under 3500lbs.

The dinette is a convertible bed with a large shelf above, maximizing the room in the RV while retaining some extra sleeping and storage space.

13. Little Guy Mini Max

Little Guy Mini Max Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Hydraulic life TV is a nice entertainment addition in this class of RV

⛔ No battery monitor

  • UVW: 2,406 lbs
  • CCC: 1,094 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 240 lbs

The Little Guy Mini Max is one of two campers on our list that approach the true teardrop form (the other is next on the list).

The Little Guy is known for its high-quality interiors, with attention to the finest details throughout. The light tans make for an excellent interior aesthetic and, despite its size, it features all of the major amenities of a traditional camper.

The wet bath is large enough to accommodate both the toilet and shower so as long as you’re not against wet baths it’s a great option.

The entire galley is in the front, which is an interesting change of pace. One of the things people really love about this camper is the number of hidden storage places scattered throughout. If you need to store it, there’s a place for it.

14. Aliner Ranger 12

Aliner Ranger 12 Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Very easy to set up as a hybrid pop-up camper

⛔ Dinette bed is not the most comfortable, an understandable lacking in a minimalist design

  • Length: 15″
  • UVW: 1,450 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,000 lbs
  • CCC: 1,550 lbs

The Aliner Ranger 12 is another of the teardrop-esque travel trailers under 3500lbs on our list of 15.

Its unique, triangular shape is definitely a conversation starter in any campground get-together. However, it’s more of a pop-up camper, in reality, than it is a teardrop.

The interesting triangular roof creates a spacey-feeling interior that other campers in this class struggle to achieve. However, as cool as it looks, you’ll have to go with an exterior shower or only camp at campgrounds where showers are available.

15. KZ Sportsman Classic 180RBT

KZ Sportsman Classic 180RBT Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Tent beds are well-built and maximize the living space within the travel trailer

⛔ Storage options could be better

  • Length: 21′ 9″
  • UVW: 3,370 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,500 lbs
  • CCC: 1,130 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 360 lbs
  • Sleeps: 4 to 6

Last on our list of travel trailers under 3500lbs is the KZ Sports man Classic 180RBT. Unlike the other 14, this RV saves space, and expands it, in an entirely different way, by utilizing fold-out tents for beds. Not only does this save space, but it also opens up the interior to a higher sleeping count.

Thanks to three fold-outs, the interior space is enormous for a travel trailer this size. There’s a full, corner dry bath, a sizeable dinette across from a long bench seat, a fridge, a pantry, and a full kitchen amenity range on opposing walls.

There are also plenty of storage options, though this RV uses a large storage door on the exterior, rather than passthrough storage.

Should I Buy an Extended Warranty for My Travel Trailer?

Yes — but not from a dealership! Unfortunately, your odds of suffering a major mechanical breakdown go up with every passing year. Based on RV Warranty claims records, more than 3 out of every 10 RVs will need major repairs in only their second year on the road.

This skyrockets to 8 out of 10 in their fifth year, and virtually ALL of them in their eighth year! Today’s RVs are increasingly more complex, and with more things to go wrong, the need to protect your investment is more important than ever.

Our RV Warranty plans allow you to change your mind! If you’re looking to sell your RV to a private party, you can absolutely transfer the policy to the new owner. Additionally, if you are trading in your RV, you can cancel your policy for a pro-rated refund.

We bought a warranty through Wholesale Warranties for several reasons:

  • We can cancel the warranty at any time and get a pro-rated refund
  • We can transfer the warranty to the new owner if we decide to sell our RV
  • There are no mileage caps on our policy
  • We can use repair shops all across the country
  • We can use a mobile repair company right at our campsite
  • The price is way better than most dealerships
  • We could finance the cost of the warranty
  • With parts and labor prices increasing all the time, we have peace of mind

You owe it to yourself to at least check out a warranty and get a free quote to see if it is right for you. It just takes a few minutes, and you will learn a ton about protecting your investment. We only recommend products we use ourselves, and we highly recommend you get a free quote from Wholesale Warranties .

Are Travel Trailers Under 3500lbs Big Enough For Families?

Some of them are, depending on your definition of family size. Some travel trailers under 3500 lbs will accommodate a single-child family, while some will accommodate two. If they are particularly energetic and rambunctious, it may take a class-A motorhome to accommodate them.

It’s safe to say that maybe one or none are fit for extremely long-term family use. Homeschooling kids in an Aliner Ranger 12, which will sleep up to 4, is doable but not the most envious task in the world.

If it works for you, then by all means. At the end of the day, the thing that works and works well is what you should go for.

Final Thoughts About Travel Trailers Under 3500lbs

Travel trailers under 3500 lbs are extremely versatile and much easier to tow. With the improving technologies and truly unique offerings on the market, they’re exciting for off-grid living, off-roading, regular camping, boondocking, and more.

If you’re in the market for a small, economical travel trailer, these 15 travel trailers should be high on your list.

Most extended warranties start after the regular warranty ends BUT the prorated amount includes the time under the regular warranty. Our original warranty was for 12 months and we got another 12 month extended warranty. After a year we traded for a larger trailer and only got 1/2 of the cost of our extended warranty back, even though it wasn’t going to kick in for another few weeks.

Which of these under 3500 lbs come insulated for cold temperatures 5,500 ft above sealevel? I only have a Subaru Outback turbo that can haul up to 3,500 lbs

I have been looking for an ultra lite trailer under 3500lbs that I can tow with my Nissan Frontier. I would prefer one with bunks and no bed. Also I would like a slide out. Double axle would be great also, but that may be asking for too much.

Good information for one looking for a small trailer. With all of my research, for one looking for a light trailer, the LANCE 1475 is a good one deserving of review. it’s more $$$$ than the afore mentioned unit’s, but it’s really nice.

Good to very good quality used 3500 pounds trailer for a 2018 Chevy Equinox diesel to pull well over the Rockies?

Hey Mike, good article. Did you come across Jayco? …2 full years of warranty. Full shower & tub. This is my third Jayco and I’m happy. I’m cruising in a Jayco Jay flight SLX Baja Edition, 145RB. Dan

Ps: I keep my weight down so I can pull with my Jeep. If I ever get out of a Jeep and into a truck, I’ll keep this article in mind. Thanks.

This was a great grouping of nice smaller trailers! The size is just what an older couple like my husband and I are drawn to. The biggest surprise was the Puma ultra light. It didn’t really stand out from the exterior, but the interior was surprisingly good looking and very functional. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen one before. The Casita, Oliver and Nest are also stunners IMO, but I bet you will have to put your name on a waiting list to get one. I recently camped next to a young couple and their dogs staying in a Wolf Pup that was probably even smaller than the 16FQ and it had a rear entry. It had the same big picture window on the passenger side though. That seems like a really great detail to carry across their floor plans. Thank you for the ‘eye candy’. Happy Travels from Michigan

Kz sportsmen classic 181bh.

Best Travel Trailers Under Feet scaled

KZ strives to produce low-cost RVs with traditional appeal in a variety of floor plans. Their Sportsmen Classic line is one of the company’s top travel trailer lines, and it is designed to be towed by most SUVs.

Another appealing feature of KZ is the free KZ RV app (available for both Android and iOS), which allows you to manage your trip from your phone.

The Sportsmen Classic collection is available in nine different floor plans. Three of these have tent beds, and the remaining three have at least two bunk beds. The 181BH model is our choice for this list because of its simple functionality.

The Sportsmen Classic 181BH is ideal for those who enjoy spending time outside. This travel trailer’s entry has a friction hinge door with a solid step system that relieves stress on the trailer’s side while your family runs in and out.

The largest sleeping space is a 54 x 80 bed in the open living space at the front of the trailer. The master bed features overhead storage, touch lighting, a 12V charger, and 110 plugs on both sides.

A set of 28 x 75 bunks is located just past the dinette slide. Because the dinette converts to a sleeping area, this small travel trailer can easily sleep six people.

KZ Sportsmen Classic 181BH Specs:

  • Hitch weight: 370 lbs
  • UVW: 2,840 lbs
  • CCC: 660 lbs
  • Exterior height: 9’4″ (without roof A/C)

Venture RV Sonic Lite SL169VBH

Best Travel Trailers Under Feet

One of our best picks for the best lightweight travel trailers under 24 feet. The Venture’s Sonic line was created to provide consumers with a travel trailer that is capable of towing without sacrificing comfort and style.

The Sonic Lite models are built with the same solid construction as the Venture Sonic line, but with a single axle frame for lighter weight and easier towing.

The Level Mate Pro system, which uses smartphone technology to level Venture RV’s towable RVs, is one of its distinguishing features. This means you can level your travel trailer on the first try, regardless of the time of day or night.

The Sonic Lite travel trailer is available in seven-floor plans and three decor options. Two of these models have bunks, and we’ve chosen to highlight the SL169VBH model because it doesn’t have any slides.

Slide-outs are great for adding extra space to an otherwise cramped trailer, but they can also be a pain to set up and maintain, which you may not always have time for.

The master bed in the SL169VBH is a 60 x 75 Murphy bed. During the day, this area serves as a dining area, complete with a free-standing table and fold-away chairs.

Venture RV Sonic Lite SL169VBH Specs:

  • Hitch weight: 410 lbs
  • UVW: 2,990 lbs
  • CCC: 1,010 lbs
  • Exterior height: 9’11” (with A/C)

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 174BH

Best Travel Trailers Under Feet

Jayco is one of the most well-known RV manufacturers, and their Jay Flight line is a best-seller. The Jay Flight SLX 7 line is intended to be a fun towable travel trailer with a smart design that allows for plenty of creative storage, functional lighting, and durable features.

Jayco is perhaps best known for its incredible two-year limited, three-year structural warranty, which means that investing in their travel trailers also provides you with peace of mind because they stand behind their product.

The SLX 7 line has six-floor plans to choose from, three of which (154BH, 174BH, and 184BS) include bunk-style sleeping.

The 174 BH model appeals to us because it provides both bunk sleeping space and a queen bed without the use of moving parts such as slides or the need to convert a space such as a dinette or a sofa.

The galley and dinette are direct across from one another, with the dinette having overhead cabinetry for storage and the kitchen having both cabinets and a full pantry.

The rear bunk beds are located along the dinette wall and have 4-inch-thick mats for a more comfortable sleeping surface. The top bunk folds up and out of the way, making this space ideal for extra storage.

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 174BH Specs:

  • Hitch weight: 305 lbs
  • UVW: 2,935 lbs
  • CCC: 815 lbs
  • Exterior height: 8’11”

Can A Normal Car Tow A 24 Foot Travel Trailer?

Yes, It can but there are a lot of factors to consider like Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR).

This is basically what you need to determine if your average everyday car can tow your travel trailer:  The power of your vehicle (this tells us how powerful your engine needs to be)

The length and width of the vehicle (this will tell us if your vehicle has enough space in between the axles for all of the required components) The type of hitch that you’re using (we’ll get more into this later)

Where to find your vehicles axle information

Another way is to look at the back of your car where all of the license and registration information is located (normally under or around the window). When you’re looking at this area check for two pieces of vital information:

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)

The first number tells you the overall weight rating of the vehicle while the second one will tell you how much your individual axle is rated to handle.

You’ll need both of these numbers in order to determine whether or not your car can tow a travel trailer . Let’s use the example below so we can see exactly what I’m talking about.

Whether you’re doing some serious off-road traveling or just looking for an economical way to spend a weekend at the lake, a small travel trailer may be just what you need.

These trailers are lightweight and relatively easy to tow, which is why the majority of campers who buy them tow them behind their daily drivers. They’re also compact enough that they can fit in nearly any driveway.

Lightweight travel trailers under 1,500 pounds are easy to tow, which spares you from having to invest in a large truck to enjoy the RV lifestyle.

They are especially handy for people who already drive a  mid-size SUV  or a car with a towing package. Though finding the right one for your family’s travel style can be a little bit of a challenge.

If 1500lb is the maximum amount of weight your can or SUV can safely pull, finding the right camper for your family’s travel style can be a little challenging.

This included looking for models that matched different travel styles and niche interests, as well as material build quality.

Here are 10 of the best camper trailers under 1,500 lbs. excellent choices for people who have light-duty tow vehicles.

  • The InTech RV Flyer
  • The LG My Pod
  • The Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro 12RK
  • The 2020 Jayco Hummingbird 10RK
  • The 2021 NuCamp Tag

1. The InTech RV Flyer

The InTech RV Flyer

  • Dry Weight of 1,450 – 2,020 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 240 – 410 lbs.
  • Sleeps up to 2 to 3 people or more

The InTech RV Flyer is an impressively customizable RV that can be set up with a dry weight as low as 1,450-pounds, though you can still deck it out with optional extras which can tip the scales as high as 2,020-pounds.

With this level of customization available it’s best to work directly with the manufacturer as they can walk you through your options to make sure that you get the travel trailer of your dreams with the technical stats that pair perfectly with your preferred tow vehicle.

One of the great things about the InTech RV Flyer is the fully welded cage frame and rugged tires.

It gives it the durability to go off-road when towed behind a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Other optional extras to consider include the double rear doors, a slide-out kitchen, an awning, a roof rack, and an air conditioning system with heat.

It can also be engineered to serve as a functional toy hauler with enough storage room to bring a pair of dirt bikes or perhaps a small ATV.

You will also appreciate the storage space offered by the InTech RV Flyer. The front tongue box provides you with a place to keep boots and other soiled items so you don’t end up bringing dirt into the main living area.

The interior also has a lot of thoughtful storage areas. Just make sure that when you are loading it up, that you don’t push the overall gross vehicle weight above the maximum towing capacity of your tow vehicle.

2. The LG My Pod

The LG My Pod

  • Dry weight of 760 lbs.
  • Hitch weight of 110 lbs.
  • Sleeps 2 people
  • Made from molded fiberglass

A lot of boxy travel trailers feel like you are towing a brick behind you, which can have a major impact on smaller tow vehicles.

The LG My Pod is a teardrop travel trailer with impressive aerodynamics that makes its already impressively lightweight frame feel almost feather-like behind your car or SUV.

The interior of the My Pod is admittedly a little small. Though it is well-appointed.

There’s enough room for two people to sleep comfortably, and it even has an entertainment center to let you watch a movie on a rainy day.

You can also appreciate that it comes with a built-in air conditioning system as part of the standard model.

This isn’t always the case with the My Pod’s shoulder-to-shoulder competitors.

If you want a little more living space, or just somewhere to take off your dirty boots before climbing into the sleeping area, then you should select the upgraded optional tent. It gives you a veritable porch and essentially doubles your living area.

3. The Pika

The Pika

  • Dry weight 1,025 lbs.
  • Fully welded frame

The Pika is a heavy-duty yet lightweight teardrop travel trailer. It starts out with a base dry weight of just 1,025-pounds with a wide range of optional extras that can add weight or keep it light and lean.

One of the things you might appreciate about the Pika is the optional suspension system.

At your preference, it can be equipped with a Standard suspension package, All-Road package, or Off-Road suspension package to pair with just about any tow vehicle you want.

It gives you enough water storage to do basic things like wash dishes and clean your hands without having to haul water in your tow vehicle.

Just keep in mind that the water tanks will increase the gross weight of the Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro.

A single gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds, so a full fresh water tank can add 168 pounds when pulling it down the road.

Just double-check the towing capacity of your vehicle before packing it to the gills, as this trailer fully loaded can have a gross vehicle weight rating of up to 2,000-pounds.

Assuming your tow vehicle can safely handle towing this much weight, you’ll be treated to a teardrop travel trailer that feels surprisingly spacious.

The bed inside can sleep a couple comfortably, and has a lot of thoughtful net bags to let you store and grab personal items.

The kitchen in the rear hatch of the 2020 Jayco Hummingbird 10RK is nicely decked out.

It comes with a microwave, as well as a single basin sink, and a sturdy RV absorption refrigerator.

6. The 2021 NuCamp Tag

NuCamp Tag

  • GVWR of 2,020 lbs.
  • 8 gallon fresh water storage tank

The 2021 NuCamp Tag is a compact teardrop travel trailer with an ultralight dry weight of just 1,284-pounds.

Just bear in mind that when fully loaded the gross vehicle weight can get as high as 2,020-pounds.

One of the things to love about the NuCamp Tag is that it has a ton of great optional extras and different configurations.

If you like to camp off the grid, then you’ll want to invest in the special “Boondock” package which beefs up the travel trailer with the kind of special features you need for off-road performance.

  • Hitch weight of 127 lbs.

This means you will want to be careful not to overpack if you have a tow vehicle with a limited maximum towing capacity.

What you get on the inside is innovative durability. The Tiger Moth has a powder-coated steel frame that adds to the long-term value, as well as enough sleeping space for two.

Though it can be reconfigured to sleep up to 5 people with the inclusion of the upper tent portion.

Optional extras to consider include a 5,000 BTU air conditioner, as well as heavy-duty loading bars and additional cargo space.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can i safely tow.

Start by checking the maximum towing capacity of your intended tow vehicle.

Then multiply that number by .8. By reducing your effective towing capacity by 20% you will have power in reserve for doing things like merging onto a highway pulling the travel trailer up a steep hill.

Staying within 80% of your vehicle’s maximum towing capacity also reduces the risk of developing a dangerous trailer sway problem.

How Much Can A Mid-Size SUV Tow?

The average towing capacity of a mid-size SUV sits around 3,500 to 3,700-pounds.

Though there are certainly some robust models that can tow over 5,000-pounds and some lesser models that can only tow up to 1,500-pounds.

If you have a small SUV or a mid-size SUV with limited maximum towing capacity, sticking to the models on this list will give you the best chance of finding a travel trailer that you can safely pair it with.

There certainly are a lot of great lightweight travel trailers under 1,500-pounds. Just keep in mind that the more cargo you load into a compact travel trailer the more the gross weight goes up.

If you aren’t sure how much your intended tow vehicle can pull, you can always check the owner’s manual.

Many automotive manufacturers also post their tow statistics online, just make sure you are factoring in the make, model, and trim level of your vehicle.

Once you have your towing statistics in hand and you’ve limited yourself to a maximum weight limit of 80% of the maximum capacity, you can start to sort through the best travel trailers on this list based on your preferred camping style.

If you are looking to get off the grid for a few days of rugged boondocking, then the Taxa Outdoors Tiger Moth and the Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro 12RK might be two of the best travel trailers under 1,500-pounds for you.

Just bear in mind that if you overload them the gross vehicle weight can push upwards of 2,000-pounds.

If you are looking for a lightweight sleeping compartment with some optional outdoor living space, then the LG My Pod with its expandable tent might be the best travel trailer under 1,500-pounds for you.

It has sleek aerodynamics towing down the road, which makes its already impressive lightweight feel even lighter.

Yet it’s also comfortable and arguably roomy when you set up camp at the end of the day.

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds (Light Towable Trailers)

travel trailers with light hitch weight

If you’re in the market for a new travel trailer and know just how much your vehicle can tow you want to be sure you choose the right trailer. These trailers all have a dry weight of less than 4000 lbs .

We put together this list because its quite common for future RV owners to look for a trailer under this weight. However before we get to the list of trailers lets go over what you should be looking for in a trailer that weighs less than 4000 pounds.

Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs

Not all cars can pull just any travel trailer, but if you have an SUV or a pickup, there are some fantastic models you can purchase for your next getaway. Are you going alone, with your partner or family?

The number of people a trailer sleeps is equally important given that you want to sleep in comfort if you’re to be able to get up to other activities during the day.

Kids are quite fond of trailers with bunk beds, so if you have little ones, be sure to look out for that. You will find that the bunk beds are often in a corner to give the children some privacy and a ‘cave’ feel.

How much storage space you need

Storage is another aspect to keep in mind when searching for the perfect home away from home for you and your family.

You don’t want to be limited in what you can bring with you to make your experience special. The duration of the trip matters- how much food, clothing, utensils and other gear will be required for the journey?

The modern-day trailer maximize on space by having overhead cabinets and drawers in the kitchen area. A good design has storage space under the bed, by a door or under the dinette- companies have found some creative ways to make the most out of the space.

Master bedroom

Though the trailer is an open plant, the size of bed can make the difference between feeling at home of feeling as though you’re camping. A queen size bed (or king size, though those are rare) for a good night’s sleep in comfort helps you feel rejuvenated after a long drive or a day outdoors exploring.

Most designs have LED lighting above the bed screwed into overhead cabinets to let you do some light reading before dozing off. Some trailers come with a closet and a bedside table on each side for added luxury.

The kitchen and dining area

Standard travel trailers come with a refrigerator, a cooktop with a kitchen hood, a microwave oven and dinette that converts into a sleeping area. Standard trailers come with a two-burner cooktop.

There are some great layouts that factor in a sink cover to give you full use of a counter top when making preparations for a meal. Though not quite common, a freezer is a great addition to have if you’re taking frozen foods or even ice cream with you.

These spaces are often quite small, but considering the time you spend in them, they are a fair compromise. A standard trailer will feature a foot-flush toilet and a shower.

Larger trailers will have a mirrored medicine cabinet and a sink with storage space underneath.

If your in the market for something smaller but still want the basic necessities such as a bathroom I would recommend reading this post here.

Water storage capacity

Don’t want to worry about water and waste during the trip? See what works for you, keeping in mind that a person can use up to 1.5 gallons for a 12-minute shower from a low flow shower-head. All trailers on this list, with two ore three exceptions, have a three water talks; a fresh, black and grey water talk. The grey tank contains the water that get used in the trailer- whether cooking, washing dishes or showering, while the black tank only holds what gets flushed down the toilet.

Safari Condo Alto F2114 Travel Trailer

The Safari Condo Alto F2114 is lightweight and can be easily towed by small SUVs. The frame and floor are made of aluminum.

The Alto is also a green travel trailer- most parts of it are recyclable, and the lightness of weight means that the car uses less gas to tow it around. The furniture mainly consists of aluminum as well as composite materials.

This series provides trailers with a more spacious interior and more storage space than the previous F17 series by Safari Condo. It, however, maintains the large windows and the durable material the brand used for their travel trailers.

The impressive feature that those who mainly love comfort when it comes to having a good night’s sleep are the king and queen size beds that you find in the travel trailer.

The water and propane tanks are also more enormous, as is the fridge.

The latter is a six to seven cubic feet three-way fridge. The heater and water heater system is equally compelling, guaranteed to keep you warm in the chilliest of nights and still let you have a rejuvenating hot shower.

The dining area is at the front and features huge curved window.

The seating allows for people who can comfortably share a meal, play games or look out the window at the scenic view outside. The table is detachable and can be fixed to the trailer’s side to create an exterior dining area when the weather is pleasant, or you just want to watch the stars.

The bathroom is quite spacious and comes with a shower and toilet cabinet with an exterior shower outlet. The king size bed also acts as two single beds that you can leave as is during your entire trip.

The dinette converts into a queen bed but can remain as is when two people are sharing the trailer. Some cabinets have sliding shelves and wardrobe to store items in. The trailer has LED lighting, with rear reading lights and exterior light as well.

Conclusion on Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs

There are plenty of travel trailer options to choose from in the market today. Most of the designs features on the list are traditional, with some breaking away to add a touch of modernity.

This list only comes to show that there’s no reason to put off your travel plans to travel the country.

Whether you want to go solo because you enjoy solitude or are soul-searching, or you’re young family eager to take your young ones on a road trip they’ll never forget and cement good memories in their mind, travel trailers offer a great balance of convenience, affordability, and comfort even for longer trips.

You don’t have to worry about hotel bookings or the cost of eating at a restaurant during every meal. With groceries and a few kitchen items from home, you can make any meal or snack you desire.

Best Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds: Our Top Picks

Published on March 26th, 2019 by Ray & Tammy Roman This post was updated on March 19th, 2024

Lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds are easy to tow by some sport utility vehicles and most all light trucks. You won’t need a heavy duty truck to take these travel trailers out on the road. We have researched most of the popular travel trailer manufacturers to see which of their models can meet the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)  of under 4,000 lbs. Here is what we found during our research. The ones listed below are our personal favorites but many of these travel trailers have creative floor plans that meet our criteria.

Our List Of Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 LBS

Coachmen viking (17bh).

When it comes to lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds, it’s hard to beat a Coachmen Viking. These travel trailers are affordable but do not compromise or quality and comfort. Most of the Viking Ultra-Lite models come in under our 4,000 lbs threshold. Towing a Coachmen Viking is a breeze with a typical full-size SUV or light truck. Outside speakers, aluminum rims, power awning, and outside shower are just some of the features.

This ultralight camper features a Norco NXG chassis, double-steps, electric brakes, four scissor-style jacks with pads, a heavy-duty tongue jack, and either single or dual 20 lbs liquid propane tank.

The exterior also has lots of great features such as a diamond plate on the front and rear wall for added protection. An aerodynamic front profile, tinted glass safety windows, power awning, a walk-on Alpha Superflex roof, bathroom skylight, back-up camera prep just to name a few.

Inside you’ll find residential grade linoleum, dark ash cabinets, laminated countertops, 4-inch high-density cushions, 12 volts LED interior lights, stone cast sink, a 2-burner stove, powered range vent, microwave, and lots more. There are some optional packages that add more features.

The 17SBH includes bunk beds and a 54 x 74-inch bed. It has a dry bath (separate tub and toilet) and a dinette and pantry.

17SBH Specifications:

  • GVWR – 3,716 lbs
  • UVW – 2,694 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 33 gallons
  • Gray Water: 25 gallons
  • Black Water: 25 gallons

The example above is just one of many that weight less than 4000. Check out their website for the latest information and specification.

Coachmen Clipper Cadet (14CR)

Like the Viking above the Coachmen Clipper is another lightweight travel trailer under 4000 lbs. Designed with fuel-efficient tow vehicles in mind the Clipper has floor plans that start at a GVWR of 3,634 lbs and go up from there, some heavier than 4,000 lbs. The floor plan selected here is the 14CR which has a GVWR of 3,803 lbs.

Being small and lightweight is not an indication that it is short on features. It too has many features like the Viking above just in a slightly smaller package. Since it has the same features as the Viking above I’m not going to repeat them, but suffice it to say both are very capable lightweights.

Clipper Cadet 14CR Specifications:

  • GVWR – 3,803 lbs
  • UVW – 2,335 lbs

Venture RV Sonic Lite

Venture RV is not a name I am personally familiar with, however, my research on lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds indicates they make a very well designed camper. Venture’s parent company is K.Z inc which happens to be a subsidiary of Thor Industries. K-Z got started with truck campers back in 1972 so there is lots of experience in this company.

On the construction side of things, the Sonic Lite has several features worth noting. For example, the roof is a one-piece seamless fiberglass roof. It extends from the profile to the rear bumper. The insulation R-value is 14 which makes for a very comfortable environment in most everyday scenarios. The roof rafters are made is aluminum and there is a diamond plate protecting the aerodynamic front profile.

Like the Coachmen above this camper also has an NXG frame . you get a standard manual awning but can upgrade to a powered awning with LED lights.

The sidewalls are 5-sided ivory infused fiberglass. Not sure what makes the ivory infused so special but apparently it’s important enough to Venture RV to mention it.

On the inside, you will find a host of features such as a spacious 60″ x 75″ bed that has USB chargers, as well as storage on the headboard. You also have overhead storage and the bed platform is on hinges allowing you to store more stuff underneath the bed.

The kitchen area features a dual-burner cook-top with a range hood. You also get a full-size convection oven which is pretty nice to have. There is also a pantry for even more food storage.

The bathroom is well laid out and has plenty of space and there is a skylight above the shower.

Added bonus features include backup camera prep, marine-grade detachable power cord, cable, TV and solar prep, and the LevelMate Pro system (optional). The LevelMate Pro calculates and displays the height required to achieve a perfectly level position. There is a lot more than you can view on their website.

Venture RV Sonic Lite Specifications:

The Venture Sonic Lite comes in 7-floor plans so you are bound to find one that meets your needs. It has many of the same features as its bigger brother the Sonic but in a more compact package. The GVWR ranges from 3,500 lbs to 4,000 lbs making this ultralight travel trailer super easy to tow.

  • GVWR – 3,500 – 4,000 lbs
  • UVW – 2,210 – 2,940 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 38 gallons
  • Gray Water: 30 gallons
  • Black Water: 30 gallons

Winnebago Minnie Drop (1710)

A unique design, excellent use of interior space make the Winnebago Minnie Drop one of our favorite lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds. You can read our review of the Minnie Drop right here.

With 4 floor plans that all have a GVWR of fewer than 4,000 lbs you are sure to find a layout that works for you and can be easily towed.

Like all Winnebago’s the Minnie Drop comes standard with lots of features. The exterior design has a nice collection of colors to please just about any RV enthusiast. The construction consists of an NGX engineered frame, aluminum floor structure, and plywood decking.

Night-shades, custom bedspread, carbon monoxide, and LP detector, as well as a 2-burner stove are included in their list of standard features.

Winnebago Minnie Drop Specification:

  • GVWR – 4,000 lbs
  • UVW – 2,760 – 3,160 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 31 gallons

Airstream Basecamp

Airstream’s entry weighing in at 3,500 lbs GVWR is the Basecamp. The Basecamp is small but it is very well-design like all the other Airstream travel trailers. It is not by any means inexpensive starting at $37,400 but it does, for some, warrant the price

A panoramic front window makes the Basecamp a cool looking travel trailer that is also extremely functional for its small size of 16-feet in length. In 2017 the Airstream Basecamp was voted RV of the year by RV Business Magazine.

There is only one-floor plan available but it is a well-laid out design that is both economical in space but very functional.

The exterior of the Basecamp is a riveted aluminum structure with a very aerodynamic shape. Tammy and I both love the panoramic window and the shape increases fuel efficiency. It also sports a rear hatch door which is usually not found on campers.

There is both an air-conditioning unit and a heating system available that are both optional. The interior decor comes in three options Red Rock, River rock, and Glacier Lake.

Two benches can easily be made into a bed, the rear hatch lets you load up your bike easily. In the kitchen, you have a two-burner stove, a sink with a tempered glass cover, a microwave, and a fridge as well. There are also two removable tables and bench storage.

A pop-up charging station in the kitchen area has two USB ports and a 110-volt outlet. On the exterior, you get a solar pre-wire kit and an outdoor shower. The outdoor shower is really a pass-through from the bathroom.

Airstream Basecamp Specifications:

  • GVWR – 3,500 lbs
  • UVW – 2,585 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 22 gallons
  • Gray Water and Black Water (Combo Tank): 29 gallons

Happier Camper

If you have never looked at a Happier Camper we suggest you do. When it comes to a unique design that is both lightweight and functional we don’t think you will find one better in this weight range. The Adaptiv modular cubes allow you to design the interior of the Happier Camper just about any way you want.

The retro styling and colors make the Happier Camper stand out from the crowd. Check out the Happier Camper here .

The Happier Camper is not your typical travel trailer. As a matter of fact, I’ve not seen any other camper designed like this one. It has a retro look with very modern features. The interior comes with what they refer to as an Adaptiv modular design.

It allows you to easily and quickly configure the interior pretty much on the fly. For example, the sleeping arrangement can be configured to up to five people. Storage and counter-top option can also be arranged any way you like with the modular component cubes. An added bonus of the cubes is that some of them can double outdoor furniture.

This modular configuration is achievable due to the honeycomb fiberglass modular floor design. IT lets you insert cubes into the floor just like Lego. Pretty cool engineering.

Some of the components available include, cooler icebox, kitchenette with sink, patio table, serving bar, toilet cube and many more.

Happier Camper Specifications:

  • UVW – 1,100 lbs
  • Fresh Water: N/A
  • Gray Water: N/A
  • Black Water: N/A

Can you tell we like Lance? Here we are again with another Lanlightweightght travel trailer. This time it’s the Lance 1475 . This is the smallest travel trailer in the Lance line-up.

Even at this small size, it has a separate shower and toilet which is something we always look for in a small travel trailer. We are not big fans of the wet bath (shower and toilet in one).

It is quickly becoming one of our favorite lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds. Lance has added more flexibility to the floor plan with an optional sofa bed slide out feature. The construction of the Lance 1475 is aluminum-framed sidewalls, floor, and ceiling. The interior panel walls are made from Azdel , and block foam insulation.

The floor and ceiling are laminated and insulated and the roof is a one-piece crowned PVC roof. More standard features on the outside include aluminum wheel and Goodyear radial tires, double-entry step with LED step lighting, exterior wash station, LCD mount bracket, manual tongue, and manual stabilizer bars , skylight, and roof vent in the bedroom and living room area.

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 7 (154BH)

The Jayflight SLX 7 offers plenty of room in a small travel trailer. Due to its lightweight, it is very easy to tow. This model is the bunkhouse model that sleeps 3-4 people comfortably. Not one of my favorite models but it is lightweight and affordable. The floor plan is well laid out and does have a separate toilet and shower.

This camper offers a Magnum Truss Roof System, Goodyear Tires with galvanized steel, impact-resistant wheel wells. The construction of the Jay Flight seems to be better than most of its competitors in a similar price range. For example, Jayco offers custom-manufactured frames that offer higher strength and durability according to the company.

The Magnum Roof Truss System uses screws rather than staples, they use oversize nail plates, 2 x 2 vertical wood studs, 7″ header beams. According to Jayco, their roof system can withstand 4,500 pounds which are 50% heavier than their competition. The frame is a fully-integrated A-frame, on a 3-inch cambered, steel box tube frame.

There is quite a bit of standard equipment including but not limited to, maple cabinets, pantry storage, acrylic sink, 2-burner stove, 3-cubic feet refrigerator, microwave oven, fancy-looking brushed nickel faucets, and 8,000 BTU A/C wall-mounted, high-quality vinyl flooring, premium sound system and much more.

Jayco Jayflight 154BH Specification:

  • GVWR – 3,250 lbs
  • UVW – 2,580 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 10 gallons
  • Gray Water: 19.9 gallons
  • Black Water: 19.9 gallons

Livin’ Lite is no longer in business. You can access the owner’s forum which is still active.

Like many Livin Lite campers, this one offers a collection of very nice features. • UVW – 2,430 lbs

K-Z RV Escape Mini

K-Z RV Escape Mini is another travel trailer with a GVWR of 3,500 lbs. The Escape Mini is affordable and lightweight but not light on style. One of the things I like about this ultralight travel trailer is its got a queen-size bed and a power awning. The Escape Mini comes in 4 different floor plans.

Additional standard features include storage above the bed which is always good to have. In the kitchen, you will find a two-burner stove, a convection microwave, seamless countertops, and a 4 cubic foot refrigerator.

Gross Vehicle Weight or (GVWR) as it is commonly abbreviated is, the maximum allowed the weight of the travel trailer and all of its content. It included the weight of the travel trailer, all fluids, cargo, optional equipment, and any accessories as well.

If you would like to calculate GVWR here is an easy to use trailer GVWR calculator.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)

The typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)

The amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment, and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the freshwater tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity.

Tip For Buying Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds

When you are ready to buy or even just looking at lightweight travel trailers under 4000 pounds, there are a few things you can do to help you make a better purchase decision. Here are some tips.

  • Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) is the maximum weight of the vehicle and travel trailer combined.
  • Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) is the maximum weight the rear axle can support.
  • Talk to other owners of the model or models you might be interested in. Ask questions, ask to see the inside if possible. Ask them about their towing experience with the camper. Does it sway? Is it steady on the road?
  • At the dealership go inside the model, open cabinets, feel the materials, look for flaws, etc. Be very critical as this is not a cheap purchase.
  • Ask the dealership if you can talk to past customers, ask questions about service, warranty, etc.

Average Weight Of A Travel Trailer (With 35 Examples)

Average Weight Of A Travel Trailer (With 35 Examples)

G. Yoganand

Travel trailer weight is a significant parameter if you are about to buy either a new or used one. So, how much do travel trailers weigh normally? This is an important thing to know if you want to know all options for your car or truck.

The weight of trailer camper is generally mentioned by the manufacturer, but they also mention many other ratings which should not be overlooked.

A trailer weight is not only the weight it carries when build, but will also include all other things you pack in.

Their weight depends on length, and many other factors. Lets see some examples and draw conclusion on the weights of travel trailers or campers.

How much do travel trailer weigh on an average

Many people buy travel trailer due to their cost and size. A travel trailer is very popular option in rv’s. One question that many people often have is how much do the travel trailers weigh.

Travel trailer weight varies widely and on an average it is between 1000 lbs to 8800 lbs.

Most of the popular travel trailer have lengths between 15 feet to 35 feet.

Comparing several travel trailers and their wights below is the average weight of travel trailer for different lengths.

The weight of travel trailer depends on the size or length. When understating the weight parameters in pounds there are multiple thing that you should understand rather then just going by the weight called out by the dealer in manual.

In this post, we will see average weight of travel trailers and various other terminologies related to travel trailer weight.

Understanding the weigh of a travel trailer is important because you are supposed to pull it using a car or suv.

A car will have certain limit and if your trailer exceeds that limit then that could be a problem. Towing a trailer initially can be tough but following the tips that i gave in my previous article can make it super easy, do check it out.

When you head out for camping, you end up packing lots of things and with a full gas tank plus a full water tank, will mean lots of weight. Thus, it becomes more important that you have fair idea of where the weight is heading. Apart from understanding the dry weight of travel trailer, get a fair idea of other weights related to it.

In case, you want to know how to find dry weight , do check linked detailed guide.

A hitch should also be good enough to handle the overall weight. Also, with a rv, you are supposed to follow certain rules related to weight. Once you cross certain weight limit even the drivers license requirement change in some states.

Read : 17 Tips to reduce RV Weight

One thing many people try to check is if they can find smaller travel trailer that have less weight. A smaller less weight travel trailer lets you pull it easily.

We will also see how travel trailer weight varies by length. Once you have that idea, it can be helpful to determine the approximate weight based on length.

Travel trailer weight variation on the basis of length

Main reason why people want to know about the weight of their travel trailer is to determine if their car or truck can tow the trailer or not. A travel trailer has length that ranges from 17 feet to 40 feet.

More the length, more is the weight of travel trailer. A 15-18 feet travel trailer will obviously weigh less than a 30 feet one. That is to say, we can almost say that weight of the travel trailer is proportional to its length. This however, may not be always be correct as with new models, construction type material the weight is varies.

New year models released and built are less heavy and thus, we can also say weight is inversely proportional to year make of the travel trailer. On an average a 16 feet length travel trailer will have a unloaded weight of around 2200 lbs to around 3400 lbs. A 30 feet travel trailer can weigh around 7000 lbs to 7800 lbs.

This may however, be not true for all makes and brands, it will always vary. But, on an average you will find the numbers to be very close. A 20 feet travel trailer can be as heavy as 2700 lbs to 2900 lbs. With advances in the way travel trailers are manufactured, you will also find a 15 feet travel trailer weighing just above 1500 lbs unloaded or even an 13 feet long travel trailer weighing below 1200 pounds.

Travel trailer are smaller rv’s, they sleep 2-3 people at times and can also be lengthy about 40 feet long. A travel trailer weight also depends on the floor plan, kind of dinner built in, position of the bath, kitchen positioning, entry exit doors, window positioning, bed style (this things require changes, adjustments then lead to weight variations).

How much do small travel trailers weigh

Lets see some examples of travel trailers along with their weight and length. This should give a fair idea of relation between length and weight of a travel trailer. These are some of the smaller travel trailer that are popular under the weight of 4000 pounds.

  • Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro 12RK – 11 feet long and weighs around 1150 lbs
  • ALiner Ascape camp travel trailer – 13 feet long and weighs around 1495 lbs
  • Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro 14FK – 14 feet long and weighs around 2010 lbs
  • ALiner Ascape plus travel trailer – 13 feet long and weighs around 1150 lbs
  • KZ Sportsmen Classic 130RB travel trailer – 15 feet long and weighs around 2126 lbs
  • ALiner Ascape MT travel trailer – 13 feet long and weighs around 1170 lbs
  • ALiner Ascape ST travel trailer – 13 feet long and weighs around 1575 lbs
  • Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro 16BH – 18 feet long and weighs around 2870 lbs
  • KZ Sportsmen Classic 150BH travel trailer – 17 feet long and weighs around 2260 lbs
  • Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro 17PR – 20 feet long and weighs around 3160 lbs
  • KZ Sportsmen Classic 151RB travel trailer – 18 feet long and weighs around 2530 lbs
  • Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro 17RK – 20 feet long and weighs around 2930 lbs
  • KZ Sportsmen Classic 180BH travel trailer – 20 feet long and weighs around 2620 lbs
  • Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro 19FBS – 20 feet long and weighs around 2960 lbs
  • Jayco Hummingbird 16FD travel trailer – 18 feet long and weighs around 2535 lbs
  • KZ Sportsmen Classic 160QB travel trailer – 22 feet long and weighs around 2740 lbs
  • Jayco Hummingbird 16MRB travel trailer – 19 feet long and weighs around 2780 lbs
  • Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro 19FD – 20 feet long and weighs around 2825 lbs
  • Jayco Hummingbird 17BH travel trailer – 19 feet long and weighs around 3015 lbs

We can determine a fair idea of weight based on travel trailer length. But that may not be always true. A length cannot be the ultimate decider to figure out the exact weight of a travel trailer, as seen from examples a 20 feet long travel trailer (of not only different make, but even same brand) weighs differently. Thus, it also depends on the floor plan, amenities and many other things packaged in the trailer.

How much do longer travel trailers Weigh

As we already saw a longer travel trailer will weigh much more and it is almost proportional to its length. A 40 feet travel trailer will have enough weight to make you think if the car you have, is good enough to pull it or not.

Even a 25 feet or 30 feet long travel trailer is much heavier and you need to be sure about the capacity of your pulling car. Lets see some of the examples to understand better and draw some conclusion on length-weight relation for heavier travel trailers.

Examples here in are also some of the best travel trailers you could buy in the range of 28 feet and 30 feet with weights under 5000 pounds and so on. While some are quoted just to see how the best and average travel trailers weigh in different segments of lengths.

  • Keystone RV Passport 175BH Express travel trailer – 22 feet long and weighs around 3250 lbs
  • Keystone RV Passport 195RB Express travel trailer – 23 feet long and weighs around 3805 lbs
  • Forest River RV Flagstaff Classic Super Lite 831CLBSS travel trailer – 35 feet long and weighs around 8105 lbs
  • Forest River RV Flagstaff Classic Super Lite 832FLBS travel trailer – 35 feet long and weighs around 8621 lbs
  • Keystone RV Passport 195RBWE Express travel trailer – 23 feet long and weighs around 3812 lbs
  • Keystone RV Passport 2200RBWE Grand travel trailer – 25 feet long and weighs around 3805 lbs
  • Forest River RV Flagstaff Classic Super Lite 831BHDS travel trailer – 34 feet long and weighs around 7970 lbs
  • Forest River RV Flagstaff Classic Super Lite 31BHWSS travel trailer – 34 feet long and weighs around 8386 lbs
  • Keystone RV Passport 234QBWE Express travel trailer – 25 feet long and weighs around 3870 lbs
  • Keystone RV Passport 239ML Express travel trailer – 25 feet long and weighs around 4140 lbs
  • Prime Time RV LaCrosse 2911RB travel trailer – 31 feet long and weighs around 6516 lbs
  • Prime Time RV LaCrosse 318BHS travel trailer – 36 feet long and weighs around 8022 lbs
  • Keystone RV Passport 2400BH Grand Touring travel trailer – 28 feet long and weighs around 4840 lbs
  • Keystone RV Passport 2670BH Grand Touring travel trailer – 30 feet long and weighs around 5344 lbs
  • Prime Time RV LaCrosse 324RST travel trailer – 37 feet long and weighs around 8334 lbs
  • Prime Time RV LaCrosse 329BHT travel trailer – 37 feet long and weighs around 8815 lbs

From the examples we could see that a 26 feet long travel trailer on an average weighs around 3800 lbs to 4150 lbs . A 28 feet long travel trailer weighs in the range of 4300 lbs – 4900 lbs. A travel trailer between the length of 32 feet to 38 feet weighs 7200 lbs – 8500 lbs .

This should be enough to paint a fair idea of how a length of travel trailer is related to its weight. But, the weights are unloaded weights and should not be confused with the overall weight of travel trailers

Understanding the travel trailer weight terminology

A travel trailer weight or weight of any other rv need to be understood correctly. The numbers that you get from the manufacturer or dealer could be misleading and misunderstood.

The weight details of various sized travel trailers that we saw are the unloaded weights. You basically need to do the math properly to see if the travel trailer weight is within limits for your car to pull.

Weight understanding in case of travel trailer is much more important than motorhomes which drives themselves (which is not the case for travel trailer or fifth wheel or pop up campers or any other towable trailers). Its important you understand the rv weight terminology .

A rating provided by manufacturer cannot be changed. Normally weight and load are same when you talk weight of rv’s. Basically, a weight of rv puts load on rv tires, axles and hitches.

This load is used to calculate various rating like GAWR (gross axle weight Rating), GCWR (gross combination weight Rating), GVWR (gross vehicle weight Rating). Lets, try to understand what exactly these things mean and how you should interpret values for these.

Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)   – This rating basically is the maximum load that the axle of the trailer can support. Trailer manufacturer provides this rating and it basically depends on axle, tire, wheels and the rating is based on the weakest link.

Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW) – This is the weight of the RV or travel trailer when it is fully unloaded without any extra things on it. Usually the weight that you see when it is at the dealer and not yet sold.

The weights that we saw above were unloaded weights. Most times people are confused with this weight, and assume the unloaded weight as the final towing weight. But, in reality the weight increases when you actually pull the trailer with all the things packed in.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)  – This rating means the maximum weight that is allowed on the RV including all the things like the passengers, driver, water, fuel. The trailer and the towing vehicle will both have their own GVWR.

Gross combination Weight rating  (GCWR) – Unlike GVWR, the GCWR is the combination rating for both the trailer and the towing vehicle. It gives the maximum combined limit for the tow vehicle and the travel trailer.

Cargo carrying capacity (CCCC) – This basically means the weight of the trailer without the optional accessories, equipment in the trailer.

Net carrying capacity (NCC) – This is the weight of all own or personal things included on the trailer or rv. For example, the combined weight of fuel, water, food, gas, equipment tools etc

Sleeping Capacity weight rating (SCWR) – This basically gives the maximum weight limit depending on the number of sleeping positions designated by manufacturer. Each included person is assumed to be around 154 lbs and thus, a 2 sleeping travel trailer will mean its SCWR will be 208 lbs and so on.

Importance of Weight distribution in travel trailer

In case of travel trailer, the weight distribution is significant. An un-even weight distributed can be dangerous and the towing hitch and the trailer can be impacted.

You need to make sure the overall weight is properly distributed. The idea is to make sure weight is properly distributed along all sides, front to back and from both right and left sides.

Rv’s and travel trailer are originally designed with proper weight distribution, and when you tow the travel trailer you need to follow same when putting in more weight through other things.

The weight of both the tow vehicle and travel trailer should be properly distributed. Technically speaking, you also need to make sure the Gross Vehicle weight Rating and gross combined vehicle weight rating is not crossed at any time.

To understand the proper rules of weight distribution, you can read the manufacturer provided manual for your travel trailer or camper.

In most cases, the idea is to keep 60% of the weight ahead of the center of gravity of the travel trailer. To understand the correct weights of your travel trailer, its better to weigh it after it is fully loaded with all stuff.

An uneven distributed weight is notable with naked eyes, but may not always be visible hence its better to keep the weight within limits and properly distributed.

One can also use weight distribution systems to make it properly distributed. Weight distribution systems work using spring bars which correct uneven weight distribution.

What affects Weight of travel trailer  – which things put on extra weight

Lets try to understand how the weight of the travel trailer is affected. What all things put on that weight.?  An unloaded weight will be less but when you head out finally, the weight of the overall travel trailer could go out of limits and that’s what we should try to limit.

Water  –  Camping need lots of water. And water adds weight to your travel trailer ? yes, do not underestimate the power of water weight. It weighs almost 8 lbs per gallon. A 50 gallon water in a travel trailer will mean you already have put on 400 lbs extra on travel trailer.

Generator – A generator is a necessary thing in you rv. You get portable generators that weigh less but even then, they can be best weighted at 300-400 lbs and that is much to add to the limited capacity travel trailer.

More watts will generally mean more weight for the generator. Thus, getting the right size generator can be a wise thing to do. But, it may not be a simple calculation for many of us and that’s why i wrote this detail guide on how to choose the right size generator for your RV (You AC is mostly the deciding factor, check out how!)

Construction material affects weight  – A travel trailer construction material type is also responsible for its weight. A fiberglass made trailer generally weigh less as compared to aluminum ones.

This however, should not be your problem as this will be included in the unloaded weight which is not in your hands anyways. But, understanding the material type of your travel trailer can be helpful as choosing the right one will mean your travel trailers unloaded weight itself is less.

Slide outs Increase weight  – A slide out for your rv increases the overall weight. Its extra space but extra weight too. A slide out normally adds upto 1000 lbs on an average. Pop up are less heavy and that can be a good option as compared to slide outs if you are looking to reduce the overall weight on your travel trailer.

How to reduce weight on your travel trailer – tips to stay light

Weighing your rv often is the best thing you could do (in case you are confused on how to weigh your rv, here is a article that i posted about  it). Regularly checking the weight helps to plan and you will stay within the rating limits. Lets see some of the things you could follow to reduce the weight and stay in limits

1. Get rid of extra things on your rv. Extra tools, extra equipment, unused personal belongings like shoes, clothes, books etc. Unused kitchen items, bedroom, bathroom accessories you don’t use more often should be kept out. All smaller things add up to put on those pounds which add-on to become a big number.

2. Weigh the travel trailer separately with car and without car. This gives great picture of what is happening and where the weight is distributed.

3. Get good weight distribution system to make sure weight is properly distributed.

4. While heading out for camping make sure you pack things which are absolutely needed and do not pack out of limits

5. Have only number of people allowed as per manufacturer manual. A human weight of around 150 lbs can be more than enough to cause the imbalance of weight distribution

6. Make sure tires are properly inflated. Maintain correct tire pressure for both travel trailer and car at all times.

7. Use aluminum in case you want to do any repairs or modifications to your travel trailer. Aluminium is light weight and thus will not put on extra weight on your travel trailer. Many times, people do patch work like filling in holes, cracks or structural changes to the travel trailer. All these smaller things should be done with materials that are less in weight and should not add on weights.

8. Get rid of things that are not in use for months or have become old. A ladder that you hardly need, an awning that is broken or things like kayak that you occasionally need. Remove things that you don’t use often or things of past that need replacement, just go ahead and replace them. This will not only save space but also reduce the unnecessary weight.

9. Get the sliding doors replaced with curtains. Doors that aren’t used for privacy and are in place just, can be removed and replaced with curtains or any other such fabrics used instead of heavy doors.

10. Replace old heavy things with new lightweight ones. Drawers, bins, shelving that are heavy and old, could be putting in weight unnecessarily and you should try and get things that are new and less in weight. You will find lots of innovative products specially designed for RV that are compact and lightweight.

Travel trailer weight comparison with Other Rv’s (Class C RV and class A RV)

A mini motorhome or a class C rv on an average weighs around 10,000 lbs to 14,000 lbs. That is almost double than an average weight of a travel trailer.

Class C motorhome are also longer than travel trailers, they tend to be around 18 feet – 30 feet long. Class A motorhomes on the other hand are the heaviest ones, they weigh much more.

On an average class A rv’s weighs anything between 15,000 lbs to 30,000 lbs. They are really heavy, and much more than a travel trailer. With so much weight they tend to intimidate you on road. Remember, with weight also the license requirement changes.

Read : How much weight RVs roof are capable to support

There is limit on weight up-to which you can drive using normal non commercial license but if the weight goes beyond certain limit then you need special license.

The rule of weight is different for all states. Like in California, a weight more than 26,000 lbs for a non towable RV will need a class B Non commercial license. Most states have similar requirement but could be little different for some states (need to check with each states rules and regulations).

A travel trailer to be towed has a weight limitation of around 10,000 lbs in most states and beyond that you will need class B Non commercial license. Looking at these numbers of pound for travel trailer, most of the times you will be okay with the normal license unless you have that very big trailer weighing more than 10,000 lbs.

If you are ready to tow your travel trailer and start the RV adventure then do start by getting all the essentials for your trailer (this is a complete list that you will need)

A travel trailer weight measurement is of much importance since it has the power to affect many other things in the camper trailer.

Apart from getting to know just the unloaded weight of the trailer, knowing all the other ratings help in  towing car-trailer system smooth. A travel trailer weighs less as compared to other bigger rv’s however it is more important to know the weight in case of travel trailers. A travel trailer weight unloaded should not be your only way of judging the capacity of your car to tow.

Understanding overall weight when fully loaded and with full water/fuel tanks is more necessary. Going through manufacturer manual, weighing your trailer often are best practices to follow.

Keeping the travel trailer as light as possible can come good for your towing car or suv. Keeping the weight distribution proper is also important and proper hitches or distribution system can come handy. One should fully understand the towing capacity of the car and then manage the weight on travel trailer. Owning a very heavy trailer also needs special license requirements and thus better to make sure the weight is within limits.

Small fifth-wheel campers, on the other hand, allow you to venture further off the beaten path more efficiently. They are also compatible with a broader array of tow vehicles, meaning you might not need to upgrade your truck to pull your new home-away-from-home.

In this article, we’ll dive into some of the smallest fifth wheel campers available and discuss why opting for a smaller model could be a smarter choice than going big.

<p>My personal favorite part about the Palomino small 5th wheel trailer is that it comes with plenty of options for <a href="https://thewaywardhome.com/campfire-cooking-tools" rel="noopener"><strong>outdoor cooking</strong></a>. As someone who likes to take advantage of good weather as much as possible, outdoor cooking is essential for me when I am camping. </p><p>While it doesn’t come with these as standard options, you can add a micro kitchen with a cooking griddle at one of two locations on the passenger side of this camper. 10. KZ RV Durango Half-Ton D230RKD

To finish things out, we are stepping back up to a couple of slightly larger floor plans. That said, the Durango Half-Ton D230RKD is still short enough to fit in most state and national parks, as well as county-owned and private RV campgrounds.

Coming from someone who probably has too much outdoor recreation gear, I love the pass-through storage compartment at the center of this 5th wheel. By locating it in that spot, the manufacturer also kept a lot of the storage weight in front of the trailer’s axle.

That will allow for safer towing, but when you are not towing, here are a few interior amenities you can enjoy:

  • Maple-Glazed Cabinetry with Seamless Solid Countertops
  • LED TV and Multimedia Stereo with DVD, Bluetooth, and Wireless Connectivity
  • Standard Tri-Fold Hide-a-Bed Sofa with Optional Freestanding Dinette Table
  • Deep Undermount Stainless Steel Sink with Residential Faucet and Sprayer
  • Double-Door Gas/Electric Refrigerator with Temperature Controls

<p>One of the absolute smallest fifth wheels from KZ RV is the Sportsmen 231RK. This trailer is light enough to be towed by most mid-size trucks, but it still includes the kind of luxury amenities that you would want if you were a full-time RVer. </p><p>The first thing that caught my eye about the 231RK is that the kitchen is located in the rear. This is something I look for more and more nowadays because of the ease and convenience it provides to your day-to-day lifestyle. </p><p>In trailers with central kitchens, traffic can get in the way of your ability to cook comfortably. Most front kitchen small 5th wheel trailers also have a lowered kitchen ceiling that makes them less comfortable for taller individuals. You don’t have to worry about either of those problems with a rear kitchen travel trailer. </p><p>In addition to its rear kitchen, the other features I like in this small fifth wheel include: </p><ul> <li>Cooktop with Recessed, 3-Burner Work Area, Glass Cover, and LED Accented Oven Knobs</li> <li>Theater Seating with Cup Holders, USB Ports, and Heat/Massage Functions</li> <li>Stainless Steel Sink with High-Rise Faucet and Pull-Down Sprayer</li> <li>Optional 4-Point Auto Electric Leveling</li> <li>Fully Enclosed, Heated, and Insulated to Protect Tanks and Pipes</li> </ul>

11. KZ RV Sportsmen 231RK

One of the absolute smallest fifth wheels from KZ RV is the Sportsmen 231RK. This trailer is light enough to be towed by most mid-size trucks, but it still includes the kind of luxury amenities that you would want if you were a full-time RVer.

The first thing that caught my eye about the 231RK is that the kitchen is located in the rear. This is something I look for more and more nowadays because of the ease and convenience it provides to your day-to-day lifestyle.

In trailers with central kitchens, traffic can get in the way of your ability to cook comfortably. Most front kitchen small 5th wheel trailers also have a lowered kitchen ceiling that makes them less comfortable for taller individuals. You don’t have to worry about either of those problems with a rear kitchen travel trailer.

In addition to its rear kitchen, the other features I like in this small fifth wheel include:

  • Cooktop with Recessed, 3-Burner Work Area, Glass Cover, and LED Accented Oven Knobs
  • Theater Seating with Cup Holders, USB Ports, and Heat/Massage Functions
  • Stainless Steel Sink with High-Rise Faucet and Pull-Down Sprayer
  • Optional 4-Point Auto Electric Leveling
  • Fully Enclosed, Heated, and Insulated to Protect Tanks and Pipes

<p>Originally designed for off-road racers (and those supporting them), the Platform Camper from Go Fast Campers is arguably the lightest and cheapest truck camper you’ll find on the market today. It’s perfect for rugged adventurers and those seeking true solitude at off-grid destinations that many others wouldn’t even attempt to reach. </p><p>Like many of these cheap truck campers, you’ll have the freedom to customize your ideal unit with Go Fast Campers. That starts with choosing the standard 90” x 50” sleeping area or upgrading to the XL 90” x 56” area. It continues with options to include automotive front and rear windows, side tent doors, and more. </p>

For those interested in getting into truck camping on a budget, starting your search with the best cheap truck campers is natural. I started my truck camping journey by installing a camper shell on a Tacoma and sleeping in the bed, but I couldn’t help but feel a little envy every time I passed a true truck camper on the road.

The Best Travel Trailer Hitches for Your Camper Vehicles

travel trailers with light hitch weight

Writen by Tom Hank

Fact checked by Joseph Varney

best travel trailer hitch

A receiver hitch for travel trailer helps provide an anchor to secure towed loads. Installing a reliable travel trailer towing hitch can help prevent many on-road vehicle-pulling accidents. But what is the best travel trailer hitch on the market?

Buyers should know that no ‘end-all’ model is classified as the one-and-only best tow hitch. Instead, it is important to take a look and think about the different factors associated with searching for an ideal travel trailer hitch system for specific demands.

Some of the things to consider are:

  • Unloaded Vehicle Weight: The weight of the towing vehicle from its manufacturing. This reading does not include the weight of any add-ons after the vehicle’s initial purchase development.
  • Trailer Towing Capacity: The maximum towing limit of the pulling trailer’s tongue. The pulled load should not exceed the maximum trailer tongue weight. Otherwise, the hitch may fail and release the towed vehicle, even while on the road.
  • Towing components: A standard hitch setup for a travel trailer generally uses the following parts: ball mount, trailer ball, safety cables (or chains), a pin, and clip. A reliable RV hitch kit should come with these components. However, these items might also be available as aftermarket purchases.

Remember that the factors mentioned above are not the only elements to consider when shopping for the right travel trailer towing hitch. Keep reading to gain more insight about these elements in greater detail.

First, here is a look at different yet excellent choices for travel trailer hitches.

Top 11 Travel Trailer Hitch Reviews

1. eaz lift 48059 weight distribution elite kit.

travel trailers with light hitch weight

Although travel trailer hitches usually have prices that can break banks, I was content to see this particular model’s costs to be at a mid-range point. Thankfully, the manufacturer did not sacrifice the durability and strength of this model.

It has a 1,200-lb maximum tongue weight with a maximum gross trailer weight rating of 12,000 lbs. I find it surprising that this weight distribution hitch kit can achieve such a feat while maintaining a relatively compact design. That reasonably small frame also made it convenient during removal and storage.

Moreover, the high-quality engineering on the steel construction made this hitch more rugged than other options, especially when compared to the low-quality units I tried.

I would also like to mention that this steel build is a top-notch chrome-molybdenum-grade variant. It means that this kit’s construction can withstand high heat without the significant risk of breaking. It also means that it ensures passengers in the towed motorhome or trailer experience a stable and comfortable ride.

The next feature I adored is the built-in U-bolts. Coupled with the safety chains, I am relieved that this kit has the necessary hardware for a proper and safe installation.

  • The mid-range price tag should fit many budget allowances
  • Tongue weight capacity and Gross trailer weight rating limit are fairly high
  • High-quality chrome-molybdenum-grade steel construction
  • Built-in U-bolts enhances convenience and safety during and after installation
  • May not be compatible with some travel trailers without modifications

2. Husky 32218 Center Line TS Hitch

travel trailers with light hitch weight

While other trailer hitches only provide secure couplings between towing and towed vehicles, this Husky Center Line TS with spring bars brings weight distribution and built-in sway control in one device.

Furthermore, just about everything I needed for the installation to work is in the kit. In turn, it did not require me to spend time going back to the store.

I also like to mention that this hitch maintained a secure connection after many trips. I tested it for about 17 days while making 26 total camping and road trips. This model performed as intended. I would even go as far as to say it provided me with flying colors for its overall performance.

Initial installation was also a breeze. It took me less than an hour to install it to a 2015 Ford Expedition. But additional testing presented me with some problems with certain towing vehicles possessing uniquely designed pulling tongues. Modifying the kit slightly solved this concern.

  • Weight distribution and anti-sway control in one travel trailer hitch
  • Complete hardware included in the kit
  • Able to withstand strong winds
  • Quiet and secure performance for short- to medium-length trips
  • Only takes less than an hour to install
  • May creak or squeak during long road trips
  • Might not fit some towing tongues well without modifications

3. Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Kit

travel trailers with light hitch weight

I can safely say that this Equal-i-zer hitch is one of the top-rated weight distribution hitches I have tried. It presented my camper with many benefits, such as the lack of the need to disconnect or disassemble the hitch assembly when backing up my vehicle.

Moreover, this model is also an anti-sway hitch for camper vehicles. It uses a 4-point stabilizing system to help reduce friction and sway during tows. This model also has linear friction at two points, allowing it to provide similar stability as compared to using an add-on 8-point sway control accessory.

Its stability was also on point, seeing that the friction sway control feature also provided a proper weight distribution across my vehicle’s towing tongue. The result is a more convenient and safe ride, including improved steering and braking.

One shortcoming I noticed is that this kit is not the quietest setup in my books. This hitch setup for travel trailer makes a creaking sound while towing a trailer. Additionally, it is not advisable to lubricate the contact area. Doing so will reduce the anti-sway function, increasing on-road risks of accidents.

  • No need to disconnect or disassemble the kit while reversing the vehicle
  • A 4-point sway weight distribution hitch that removes most side-to-side motions
  • Excellent weight distribution to the towing vehicle’s tongue
  • Top-notch compatibility for it can fit many vehicles, including utility trailers
  • The immutable creaking sound might be an issue for some users

4. Fastway e2 Weight Distribution Kit

travel trailers with light hitch weight

Although the price of this model falls within the average cost of many trailer hitch receivers, it has features that I found to provide me with more value than its overhead. For instance, the traditional spring arms provided my towing setup with an optimal distribution of the weight of both the towing and towed vehicle.

Take note that this setup uses a round bar and a trunnion. The latter component provides towing vehicle users like me with better ground clearance than many other choices on the market.

I also approve that the manufacturer decided to develop a hitch design that does not require disassembly while backing up my vehicle. However, I should mention that this setup that does not require a disconnection should be on a flat surface. Otherwise, attempting it on a steep uphill will still require me to take the system apart.

The install process is also unique as compared to other similar products. I can set this kit up as a front-mounted hitch or connect it to my vehicle’s rear axle. This design also supplies vehicle-pulling options for many users.

Also, this unit has a cohesive anti-sway system. This feature uses friction within the brackets and spring arms to reduce trailer sway from the trailer during tows. It does fairly well in removing unwanted side-to-side motions. But I wish that it does better in eliminating up-and-down movements as well.

  • Traditional spring arm design offers optimal weight delivery
  • Excellent ground clearance, thanks to a trunnion
  • Does not require disassembly when backing up a vehicle on a flat surface
  • Can be installed in either the front or back of a towing vehicle
  • Anti-sway system efficiently removes side-to-side movements
  • 10-year limited warranty
  • Might still demand taking the kit apart if the vehicle backs up on a steep hill

5. Andersen Hitches Weight Distribution Hitch

travel trailers with light hitch weight

While many hitches with weight-distributing features focus on using the traditional spring bar setup, this Andersen weight distribution hitch revolutionized how these components work. The company removed the conventional spring bar design and created a relatively simpler chain system.

This chain design results in a lighter and quieter towing hitch for campers. In comparison, many other hitches generally weigh more than double what this model has to offer. Its lightweight construction also made it possible to make the install and removal setup easier than others.

Installation is also a reasonably straightforward task, thanks to the detailed instructions. But individuals that wish to purchase this kit should heed my warning: it can be easy to bend the triangle plate and ruin the urethane springs. Therefore, make sure to pay extra care when setting up these parts.

Additionally, I liked that this hitch has two ways to attach and detach from a tow vehicle. First is the use of the provided ¼-in. nut; tightening it will secure the connection, whereas loosening this component undoes the attachment. I can also use an electric trailer tongue jack to do this process faster and with less hassle than before.

  • Uses a chain design to make the system lighter and quieter than others
  • Straightforward installation, thanks to the detailed instruction manual
  • Two options to attach and detach the tow vehicle through this hitch
  • Self-lubricating system that does not require extra grease or lubricant
  • Requires care not to break some parts during installation

6. CURT 17500 TruTrack Weight Distributing Kit

travel trailers with light hitch weight

I find this CURT adjustable RV trailer hitch to be one of the more expensive units on the market. But the bump in its price tag is justifiable because it offers a myriad of functional features. One example is its weight rating.

With a 10,000-lb. maximum tow weight rating, along with a 1,000-lb maximum tongue weight rating, this vehicle’s towing capacity exceeds most of its competitors. However, its compatibility limits this tow vehicle weight rating because this unit only fits 2×2-in. trailer hitch receivers.

Moving forward, another feature that I liked about this weight-distributing hitch kit is its five adjustable locations. With it, I can tow multiple vehicles, provided that the maximum trailer weight of all pulled objects does not exceed the system’s allowable load.

I should also mention that distributing the weight is customizable on this kit. This adjustable hitch has a movable shank. Coupled with spring bars that move 30 to 70 degrees, this model can fit many tow vehicle tongues, as long as they have 2×2-inch receivers.

  • Maximum tongue weight rating and tow weight rating exceeds many competitors
  • Five adjustable locations for towing multiple vehicles
  • Adjustable shank to enhance compatibility and flexibility
  • Carbide black powder coating provides weather resistance to the system
  • Might not be compatible with hitch receivers that are not 2×2-in. in size

7. Ultra-Fab 35-946403 Travel Trailer Hitch Receiver

travel trailers with light hitch weight

The 53-lb weight of this trailer hitch receiver triggered my skepticism. But this lightweight model is a solid performer on and off the road. Its performance can even outshine some of its heavier competitors.

Starting with the installation, it only took less than 2 hours to complete. The installation process could be faster, but I was chatting with my friend at that time. I should mention that some welding might be necessary to enhance the hitch’s stability and strength.

Furthermore, this trailer hitch is a good choice for towing fairly light objects. I tested it on pulling things like generators and bike carriers. However, anything heavier than about 3,000-lbs will compromise this hitch’s structural integrity.

Still, it can be quite difficult to complain about its shortcomings after seeing its price tag. It is one of the least expensive models on the market for a product of its class. I tried searching for even more inexpensive hitches. The outcome of my search is that I mostly found options that are lacking in quality features.

  • Lightweight 53-lb. construction without sacrificing overall performance
  • Installation is reasonably quick and easy to complete
  • Ideal for towing sufficiently light objects, such as generators and bike racks
  • Available at an inexpensive price
  • Might not be good for towing anything with a weight heavier than 3,000 lbs.
  • Some welding might be necessary to achieve a stable finish

8. CURT 17063 Weight Distribution Hitch

travel trailers with light hitch weight

Perhaps the most likable aspects of this weight-distributing trailer hitch are its installation and removal. These procedures did not demand a significant amount of time and effort from my experience.

First, I would like to go about the install process; it starts by mounting the ball and plate onto the trailer frame. Then, I secured these parts using the included self-tapping screws. As for the sway control ball, this component came pre-installed, thus cutting the installation time by quite a bit. Finally, attach its bar to the balls and install the clips.

The removal process is also reasonably straightforward. It only required me to unclip the bar. Then, I followed the install process but in reverse. When I found myself getting stuck with the setup, I can consult the detailed instruction manual for help.

This kit also includes a snap-up lever, which provided my tow vehicle with extra leverage. This feature, it adds extra security for the setup’s assembly.

I should also mention that if I had the hitch head at the highest setting, the maximum extended length is going to be 7 in. At that point, it is a reasonable height to give the tow hitch’s tongue extra ground clearance.

Moreover, I like the build quality on this trailer hitch. Its construction has a corrosion-resistant carbide black powder coating that can also protect the system from harsh weather.

  • Installation and removal are reasonably quick to complete
  • Snap-up lever provides the setup with extra leverage
  • Hitch head offers additional clearance at the highest setting
  • Superb corrosion-resistant build quality
  • Customers may need to buy compatible sockets for the assembly

9. Husky 30849 Weight Distribution Hitch

travel trailers with light hitch weight

This weight distribution hitch does not only provide optimal balance and stability to tow and towed vehicles; it is also a workhorse. With a weight rating of 1,200 lbs, and a gross trailer weight of 12,000 lbs., this hitch can help pull many objects without the worry of them detaching in the middle of a road trip.

I would also like to circle back to this kit’s stability because this trait is one of this product’s highlights. Using a 2-point anti-sway mechanism, it manages to even out significant rocks or sways that might otherwise come from pulling a heavy load. The manufacturer also gives the option to buy two more sway control balls for extra stability.

After taking the items from its box, the next step was to install this hitch onto my tow vehicle. The installation was reasonably easy because it only took about three major steps to finish the process. First, I ensured that both vehicles were level. Then, I attached the ball. The final step was to secure the chains.

This kit also shines from its built-in pivoting. I managed to pivot the hitch to about eight inch vertically. That pivot range is generally more than what the typical weight distribution hitch can usually offer.

  • Above-average 12,000-lb. gross trailer weight and 1,200-lb. tow weight rating
  • 2-point anti-sway system for optimal stability
  • Option to purchase additional sway control balls for additional stability
  • Fairly easy installation
  • Able to pivot with an 8-in. range
  • The retainer pin might need to be sturdier

10. CURT 13703 Adjustable Trailer Hitch

travel trailers with light hitch weight

I found this adjustable trailer hitch to be quite the contender in the midrange category. It has a 3,500-lb gross trailer weight and a 350-lb tongue weight. It contends well with other similar products in its class with those measurements.

That vehicle pulling prowess resonates with the kit’s durable steel build. I found the construction to have a black powder-coated finish to help prevent the unit from corrosion and rust. This coating also aids in preventing damage to the system from the elements, especially from the sun’s UV rays.

Next, I admire this hitch’s versatility. It can accommodate trailer tongues with widths between 22 and 72 in. At that range, this product’s compatibility is reasonably excellent across the board. It can even work on different frame applications, including box, C channel, and I-beam variants.

I also found out that this particular hitch passes the Detroit engineering facility SAE J684 standards. In turn, I am at peace, knowing that this hitch system supplies me with top-rated performance and longevity.

Moving forward, the installation is also fairly easy to finish. One of my test vehicles for this product is the 2008 Jayco fifth-wheel trailer. Installing this hitch onto that RV was not a laborious ordeal.

  • Competitive gross trailer and tongue weight
  • Durable steel built with black powder coating is resistant to damage
  • Versatile hitch that can fit different applications like a box frame
  • Easy to install on many compatible vehicles
  • May need to buy the hitch clip, pin and lock to complete the installation

11. PSAUTO Adjustable Trailer Hitch

travel trailers with light hitch weight

Although it seems that weight distribution hitches dominate the market heavily, I found this model with a trailer ball hitch design can compete with other similar products. I can safely say that previous statement because of this hitch’s many top-notch features, especially its 20,000-lb tow weight capacity.

With this trailer hitch, a compatible towing vehicle can pull more objects than a typical weight-distributing hitch. It even has a distinct channel-style shank, allowing the setup to appear or disappear for convenient use and storage. Also, this system’s weight limit allowed me to say that there might be no such thing as too much weight for towing.

That durable nature also comes with a weather-resistant construction. I left this hitch outdoors for a while to expose it to the elements. Its build withstood the harshness of rain, sleet, and dirt. Even dirt and road grime were not enough to damage the kit’s rugged parts.

But in case this hitch becomes damaged from natural causes, it comes with a limited lifetime warranty. The manufacturer also offers a money-back guarantee to its customers if this product proves to be defective upon purchase.

  • Maximum tow weight capacity of 20,000-lbs.
  • Unique channel-style shank allows convenient use and storage
  • Weather-resistant construction repels damages from the elements
  • Limited lifetime warranty and money-back guarantee
  • Might do better in removing sways

Travel Trailer Hitches Buying Guide

camper-hitch

Buying a travel trailer tow hitch without taking the time to research can lead to wrong purchasing decisions. Interested buyers should start their shopping journey by looking at a trailer hitch compatibility chart.

After that initial step, think about these factors while shopping for the most favorite trailer hitch on the market:

Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW)

Also known as a travel trailer’s real weight, the UVW represents the weight of the RV with only the load brought by the equipment installed from manufacturing. It does not take into account additional parts like extra hitch accessories.

A tow hitch for travel trailer should support the vehicle’s UVW. Otherwise, installing a mounted hitch with a low lifting capacity can put the trailer’s tongue and the towed vehicle to crash.

Trailer’s Towing Capacity

Trailer owners can find their vehicle’s maximum towing limit by checking their owner’s manuals. If that piece of information is missing, towing vehicle owners can figure out their RVs’ pulling limit by understanding certain elements.

First, it is important to know the different weight ratings of the vehicle. If these details are absent in the owner’s guide, it might be possible to search for the information online. Make sure to use the right key phrases if you need information for specific models, like a bumper pull trailer hitch for a particular vehicle.

Also, the weight ratings required for calculating the towing capacity are:

  • Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)
  • Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR)
  • Gross Trailer Weight Ratings (GTW)
  • Tongue Weight (TW)
  • Curb Weight

Then, contact the trailer’s maker and give them those numbers. Aside from pulling up information about a travel trailer’s tow capacity from the weight ratings, the manufacturer may also disseminate the correct details about the vehicle’s precise pulling weight limit.

Tow Components

Ideally, the top-tier hitch for towing travel trailer comes as a complete kit. But some manufacturers also offer extra parts for reasonably inexpensive replacements.

A good tow hitch for travel trailer setup usually uses the following parts:

  • Ball mount: Often comes with a hitch ball inserted into a trailer hitch receiver and secured with a pin-and-clip assembly.
  • Trailer ball: Also called the hitch ball, this component is the attachment point for the trailer and the towing vehicle.
  • Tow hitch pin and clip: A small metal bar or rod holding the ball mount and the tube for the hitch receiver.
  • Safety cables or chains: Restrains the towed trailer from separating if the coupler or hitch fails.

Additional Features

When looking for the right hitch for travel trailer, it might be tempting to buy a unit with extra functionalities. However, make sure that these add-on items comply with safety regulations.

Some of the relatively common additional features included in some hitches are:

  • Extra mirrors: Also called towing mirrors, these pieces of glass allow drivers to gain a better viewing angle than the built-in mirrors on their vehicles.
  • Brake control: A feature that connects the towed vehicle’s brakes with the towing automobile’s brake system.
  • Rearview camera: Helps drivers avoid obstacles while reversing their towing and towed vehicles.

Another extra feature that many towing vehicle owners often consider is a sway control bar. With it, the trailer can maintain a reasonably straight orientation despite hazards like bad weather or high winds.

What Kind Of Trailer Hitch Do I Need For A Travel Trailer?

Camper trailer towing hitches come in different types. Understanding the distinct features and traits of the various camper trailer hitch types will help buyers purchase the correct model for their specific needs.

A camper hitch can fall under one of the following categories:

  • Front mount hitch: An ideal choice for towing travel trailers at their fronts. It has a similar design to a rear-mounted design, but for the front.
  • Gooseneck hitch: Mainly designed for pickups only and has an average weight capacity of 30,000 lbs.
  • 5th wheel hitch: Similar to a gooseneck hitch kit, a 5th wheel hitch mounts over or at a slightly forward location of the vehicle’s rear axle. But hitches for 5th wheels can often only hold up to 24,000 lbs.
  • Bumper hitch: As its name implies, this camper receiver hitch attaches directly to the vehicle’s bumper.
  • Pintle hitch: It can be easy to mistake a pintle hitch with a model with a ball mount design because of their designs. But a pintle trailer hitch for camper has a hook with the same name as this hitch category.
  • Weight distribution hitch: It is possible to mount a weight distribution system to either the front or rear of the vehicle. As its name dictates, this type of tow hitch distributes the trailer’s tongue weight across the towed trailer and the towing vehicle.

Buyers may use specific keywords like Hensley weight distribution hitch to look at the different models on the market. Precise key phrases can also aid in filtering search results, streamlining the online shopping experience.

Which Is Better Class 2 Or Class 3 Trailer Hitch?

Class 2 and Class 3 trailer hitches supply users with benefits often unique to each travel trailer tow hitch class. The following list is a quick look for some of the relatively common characteristics of Class 2 and Class 3 trailer hitch accessories:

Class 2 Trailer Hitch Receiver

  • 350-lb. maximum tongue weight capacity
  • 3,500-lb. maximum gross travel trailer weight capacity
  • Ideal for hauling a bike rack or a small boat
  • Fairly inexpensive

Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver

  • 800-lb. maximum tongue weight capacity
  • 8,000-lb. maximum gross weight rating
  • Ideal for pulling medium boats and campers
  • Reasonably more expensive than Class 2s

What Is The Strongest Drop Hitch?

A steel drop hitch for travel trailer will generally outperform other hitch accessories, such as those made from aluminum, when talking about durability and maximum weight capacity. With steel, it can provide a sufficiently long serviceable life for its users, thanks to its rigidity.

This sturdiness generally also comes with optimal support. Steel weight distribution hitches work well in flat and uneven terrain, reducing unwanted movements from the trailer’s tongue.

Does Weight Distribution Hitch Help With Sway?

Some weight distribution hitches have sway controls to help reduce side-to-side motions. Certain models may also perform better than others by supplying towing and towed vehicles with up-and-down motion reduction features. In the case your hitch trailer happens to shake and cause an annoying rattle. I recommend owning an anti rattle hitch device. Click here to lean more an article about them.

How Do I Know If My Hitch Is Class 1 Or 2?

Aside from consulting the product’s owner’s manual or asking the manufacturer, figuring out if a towing hitch for a travel trailer is Class 1 or Class 2 is possible by understanding the distinct features of each class.

Here is a quick look at the fairly common traits in Class 1 and Class 2 travel trailer hitches:

Class 1 Travel Trailer Hitch

  • Often designed for domestic and foreign passenger cars
  • Typically has a gross vehicle weight rating of 2,000 lbs.
  • It is generally a small trailer hitch made for towing light-duty trailers

Class 2 Travel Trailer Hitch

  • Often designed for passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks
  • Generally has a tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs.
  • Usually built for towing a boat or camper and mounting a cargo carrier.

Using the best travel trailer hitch presents users with different benefits. Some of these advantages may include (but are not limited to) enhanced durability, stability, and long serviceable life.

It is possible to get the most out of a hitch if buyers choose my suggestion, which is the CURT 17063 Weight Distribution Hitch. This model is easy to install and remove, provides great clearance, leverage and has a top-rated corrosion-resistant construction.

How to choose the right trailer hitch

When choosing a trailer hitch you need to consider how the weight of what you will be hauling, the towing limit of your vehicle and how often you will tow with it. It’s also essential to find out if the hitch you choose is compatible with your vehicle. If you plan on hauling around a small trailer or flatbed then a hitch with a light-duty weight capacity of around 5,000 pounds or less should be enough. If you have a truck or large SUV and you need to haul a medium-sized trailer or another vehicle then you should aim for a weight capacity of around 10,000 pounds. If you have a heavy-duty truck for work or if you have an RV or large travel trailer to tow around, then you should aim for a gooseneck hitch with a larger weight capacity.

How do I find my vehicle’s towing limit?

Information about your specific vehicle’s towing capacity and how much weight it can handle can be found in your owner’s manual.

Bumper hitch vs receiver hitch

According to CarParts.com, “A step bumper can function as a towing hitch, but that is not its primary function. On the other hand, a receiver hitch is specifically designed for towing purposes, making it the better choice of the two if you plan on doing a lot of heavy towing”.
