6 best cycling tours in Italy

Italy is an amazing country for a holiday, so planning an Italian bike tour is especially exciting.

However the truth is that there are a lot of Italy bike tours to choose from – and comparing them when you’re bouncing from website to website isn’t easy. In fact it can be pretty frustrating!

So, we’ve picked out six of the best Italian cycling tours that we know of from both working with cycling tour operators in Italy and our own research, and we’ve put together this article. We hope it will make it much easier for you to plan your getaway.

Before you dive into this, make sure you’ve read our destination guide for Italy as well as our pick of favourite places to cycle in Italy , so you know where you want to go. And we’ve got a separate article on self-guided cycling tours in Italy , cycling hotels in Italy – and also a different guide for luxury tours if that’s more what you’re looking for.

Otherwise, here are the top cycling Italy tours that we’ve come across.

This article includes details of services that we have used ourselves or which we would consider using. Some are paid adverts. Please read our disclosure policy for further information.

The information in this guide is based on each tour operator’s website. We’ve done everything we can to make sure it’s accurate, but please double-check any details with them when you book, as something may have changed or the website may be inaccurate.

Prices are typically based on two people sharing a room, and a single supplement may apply if you travel alone. We’ve summarised what is normally included but individual tours may vary.

Since 2023 we have worked with Gusto Cycling on our guide to cycling Tuscany .

Italy cycling tours – a comparison

Gusto cycling.

gustocycling.com

Where do the tours start?

The company runs a number of tour of Italy cycling options, some of which are based around races/events including Maratona dles Dolomites, Strade Bianche, and L’Eroica. The main cycling holidays are 7-night self-guided tours of Tuscany beginning in either Lucca or Siena.

Just Italy or other destinations too?

Gusto Cycling purely focuses on cycling tours in Italy (and Tuscany to be precise!).

How many years have they run cycling tours in Italy for?

The website states that Gusto Cycling has “over 10 years” experience in running tours.

How many tour dates do they offer each year?

There are no set dates, except for those based on cycling events/races. You can choose whenever you wish to book.

What’s the maximum group size?

The biggest group size that you can select when making an online enquiry is eight, although it’s worth emailing the team if you have a bigger group as they may be able to accommodate you.

How much does a 4 day trip cost?

A 4-day trip around Montecatini Terme starts at £417 per person, based on two sharing a room.

How much does a 7 day trip cost?

A 7-day trip around Tuscany starts at £1,359 per person –  the prices are the same whether you book the Tuscany North or Tuscany South itineraries.

What’s included?

On every tour you’ll enjoy quality accommodation, carefully chosen by the Gusto Cycling team. Each hotel will include a buffet breakfast. You’ll get a hybrid bike to use for the duration, including helmets, water bottles and repair kits. A luggage service is included, and you’ll be given tailored GPS routes. Every day you can check in with Marco, who runs Gusto Cycling, for tips and guidance.

Do they offer bespoke trips?

Every trip offered by Gusto Cycling is bespoke – there are no set days, and if you have any special requests then Marco will do everything he can to cater for you.

Any other notes?

There are a number of special one-day tours available if you happen to be in Italy and want to go exploring, or you could add them onto your itinerary when you plan a longer cycling break.

Marco, the owner of the website, was born in the UK but his family are from Montecatini Terme and so he has a deep understanding of the region.

If it’s a Florence bike tour, you’re after, you’ll need to go bespoke – the Tuscany itineraries stick to smaller towns nearby.

Despite the company name, they do offer cycling breaks around the rest of the world too, including the French and Austrian Alps, tours of Slovenia, and a Colombia cycling tour.

Trek Travel

trektravel.com

Final thoughts

If you want to tour Italy by bike, these companies offer some excellent choices. However, we’re conscious that most of the companies on our list aren’t based in Italy – and many are focused on the North America market.

One of our most popular bike tours in Italy, this coast-to-coast cycling adventure showcases some of the country’s most important monuments. We’ll have a challenging climb to see the Monastery of Fonte Avellana, discover the medieval town of Gubbio with its outstanding amphitheater, and explore Assisi and Spello, home to the famed Roman Gates, the Temple of Minerva and the Basilica of St. Francis. Along the way, we’ll have a wine tasting at a family winery, observe the medieval art of paper-making, and learn the culinary secrets behind the incredible regional cooking you’ll enjoy throughout the trip. Each day highlights Italy’s best and most scenic bicycling routes, from the incredible ascent to Orvieto to the grand finale of the Tombolo di Feniglia.

Confirmed tours are dates that have been selected by us that have a very high probability of reaching the minimum group size for us to run the tour and for you to receive the best Ciclismo Classico experience. These tours are confirmed as much as a year in advance, compared to our regularly scheduled tours which are confirmed around 90 days prior to departure.  When you place your deposit for a confirmed tour, you have the green light to make your pre and post travel plans and even book your flight with our personal guarantee that your tour will run!

If you are traveling alone, this optional single supplement will guarantee you a room to yourself at each hotel. The cost of a single room is often more than half the price of a shared room, so this additional supplement reflects that increased cost for each night over the course of the trip.

Nun Assisi Relais

Located in the highest part of the old city, guests can enjoy spectacular views of Assisi from the terraces of Relais Nun. This exclusive 5-star resort came about from a careful restoration of the ancient Saint Catherine monastery, which was originally constructed in 1275 for a community of Benedictine nuns, which in turn was built on top of a Roman bath house from the 1st century AD, right near the site of the Roman amphitheater. While the hotel rooms are designed with a modern style, each room and area of the structure incorporates many different elements of the original structure. Descending into the Nun’s award-winning Spa is like traveling a couple of thousand years into the past as you bathe amidst the Roman pillars (rediscovered during renovation) surrounding the hydro massage pool.

It was built on top of preexisting medieval buildings, and a recent restoration has given the different age-long structures new splendor. From the refined facade overlooking Piazza Ranieri to the underground rooms cut into the tufa mass, the hotel is a magnificent sight to behold.

Sovana Resort

Our accommodation for the night is the elegant and intimate Sovana Resort, a 4-star hotel. Recently modernized and renovated, the rooms feature simple furnishings with antique furniture. You can enjoy the splendid ruins of Sovana while having breakfast in the breakfast room or the large outdoor garden. The hotel has a swimming pool amidst the open Tuscan countryside.

Hotel Capo D’uomo

Capo D’Uomo is a hotel situated on the cliffs of Talamone, a picturesque village of yachters and fishermen. It is a round building, nestled in the rock and surrounded by terraced gardens that lead down to the sea of Cala Regina. Every room offers spectacular views, and the summer winds carry the sounds and smells of the sea. Step out onto your balcony, relax with a drink, and immerse yourself in the mesmerizing blue Mediterranean Sea.

Most travellers and vacationers flock to Italy for its notorious big cities: Florence, Rome, and Venice, where hustling, bustling culture meets crumbling, ancient history. And don’t even get us started on the cuisine and wine! But what if we told you you could explore more remote areas of Italy, meandered by fewer crowds than the popular tourist cities? Don’t get us wrong; you’ll still pass through some famed metropolises and dabble in Italy’s rich, historical culture! Trekking through Italy is an ideal way to experience all the significant aspects of the country at a slower pace.

Trekking in Italy

Italy boasts a diverse range of treks. Want remote and rugged? Give the Alta Via Trek or hut-to-hut adventure in the Dolomites a try. Dial it back with a breezy seaside trek in Cinque Terre. You can complete this route in half a day, but why not spend a few days soaking up the five villages overlooking the sea? Some treks in Italy might keep you on foot for almost a year—the Grand Italian Trail, for example—while other routes only have you hiking for a few days.

Which type of adventure fits your trekking style? Take a look at eight of the best treks in Italy below.

8 Best Treks in Italy

1. Grand Italian Trail

Let's begin our list of Italy's eight best long-distance treks with a grandiose adventure: the Grand Italian Trail. This bucket-list-worthy trek travels more than 6,000km through Italy, bypassing some extraordinary imagery en route. Travel through the ever-imposing Dolomites and Gran Paradiso National Park. On top of that, you'll discover Mount Etna, the most active and tallest volcano in Europe. Then, enjoy the less-crowded, natural beauty flanking Abruzzo. Expect a beautiful fusion of Italian culture and spectacular scenery as you trek through the country! Check out all the different walking tours in Italy , and spend your next holiday exploring Italy on foot.

Location: Lazzaretto - Chiesa del Buon Cammino Distance: 6,166.0 km Time: Around 350 days When to do: Between May and October

Grand Italian Trail

2. Cinque Terre

Regarding distance travelled, Cinque Terre opposes the Grand Italian Trail, as it only takes a few hours to hike from village to village.

Why not spend as much time as possible soaking up the five villages speckled by the seaside? If you want to explore the entire route in one day, you can always spend more time meandering the 120km trail network spanning the area.

Explore tours so you can explore Cinque Terre on your next vacation. You can marvel at the views and food on this self-guided Cinque Terre trek , or find other Cinque Terre walking tours in Northern Italy .

Location: Riomaggiore to Monterosso Distance: 11.0 km , but it’s normal to stretch it over a few days When to do: March to June or September to October

Cinque Terre

3. Tratturo Magno

Travel through the Gran Sasso mountains, where low-hanging mist can't help but highlight these mountains' true height and grandeur. After marvelling at the never-ending natural wonders speckling central Italy, head to the farmland in Tavoliere delle Puglie. This long-distance trek always impresses, thanks to the history and uninterrupted beauty along the path. The Gran Sasso is a classic destination for an Italian walking vacation, combining great scenery, history, and wonderful food. Make your own memories and find an Italian Walking Tour for your next holiday.

Location: L’Aquila to Foggia Distance: 244.0 km Time: 10 days When to do: May to October

Tratturo Magno

4. Via degli Dei (Path of Gods)

Walk through the shadows of ancient history on the iconic Via degli Dei (Path of Gods). Some sections hark back to 187 BC! Hikers can expect a natural blend of Italian culture—such as through Bologna, punctuated with the final destination, Florence—and history. Overall, the Via degli Dei ranks as a moderately challenging adventure, making it accessible to most, but worth training and preparing for! The Via Degli Dei walking tour is a classic vacation option. Explore other walking tours in Tuscany , or these trekking tours in Northern Italy .

Location: Bologna to Florence Distance: 125.0 km Time: 5 days When to do: April to June or September to November

Via Degli Dei

5. St Francis Way

Want to traverse Italy's "green heart"? The St Francis Way awaits! While the trail is 520km, you can also look into completing one of the four stages instead. For example, you can stick with stage one and go from Florence to Sansepolcro—travelling 138km instead of 520km. The first stage captures the wonder of Italy's lush, rolling countryside. The following two sections take you deeper into the country, introducing walkers to ancient hilltop villages and vineyards. Dip back into a more hustling, bustling civilization during the final stage, ultimately leading you to one of the most significant cities in the world: Rome. Want to do this walk, one great option is the St. Francis tour from Florence to Verna , that takes you through the beautiful Tuscan countryside as you walk. You can find more St. Francis walking tours in Southern Italy

Location: Florence to Rome Distance: 520.0 km Time: 28+ days When to do: May to October

6. Alta Via 1

The dramatic scenery sweeping the Dolomites possesses the power to lure and inspire any avid hiker. You won't grow bored meandering by alpine lakes, layers of peaks, and grassy valleys hugged by jagged slopes. And one of the best ways to soak in the mesmerizing highlights is to trek the challenging Alta Via 1. Newbie trekkers will also enjoy this route, thanks to the limited technicalities underfoot. The trail is also well-marked! Join an Alta Via Trekking Tour on your next vacation, or find other great walking tours in the Dolomites .

Location: Lago di Braies to La Pissa Bus Stop (Val Cordevole) Distance: 120.0 km Time: 8-10 days When to do: June 15 to late September

Alta Via

7. Via Francigena

The stunning Via Francigena pilgrimage actually goes from Canterbury to Rome, stretching 2,000km.  While the complete route is spectacular, many feel the final stretch, from Lucca (near Florence) to Rome is the real highlight.  This 420 km stretch takes 2 to 3 weeks depending on your speed, and combines the best of Italy. You start in Florence, and then train to Lucca, where you start walking, savouring the best of Tuscany and Lazio, before ending up in Rome.

Want to be a pilgrim, check out this partial Via Francigena Tour from Lucca to Siena . You can also find more Via Francigena walking tours in Tuscany .

Location: Lucca to Rome Distance: 420.0 km Time: 14-21 days When to do: March to November

8. The Mining Trail of Saint Barbara

Revel in over eight thousand years of stories spanning this path. Miners travelled this trail way back in the day, and now it has been revamped! Walk past old mine towns and cultural delights tucked by natural wonders along this impactful long-distance trek.

Don't expect to walk through dry conditions for the entire journey! You'll also pass by gorgeous water beauties, such as the 5 Faraglioni and the Sugar Loaf and the Waterfalls of Sa Spendula.

Find other great tours in Sardinia , and if you are interested in similar tours, these wonderful walking tours in Sicily would make a fine walking holiday.

Location: Iglesias, Italy Distance: 498.7 km Time: Around 30 days When to do: Year-round, but it might be best to avoid during the hot summer months

Italy Bike Tours

Anyone who’s been to Italy and tasted the pasta (or olive oil, or wine, or truffles) will insist that words fail to capture the nuances of flavor. “It’s just different,” they say. If the most treasured souvenir from an Italy vacation is reaching culinary enlightenment, tasting your way through this country reveals that it grows ever bigger with delightful discoveries instead of smaller.

On a bicycle tour, you’re even closer to the land that generously gives forth Piedmontese hazelnuts, Nebbiolo grapes, Sicilian lemons, and Arborio rice. From the snow-capped peaks of the Austrian-influenced Dolomites and the terraced vines of the Cinque Terre to the olive groves of Tuscany and the inviting coast of Puglia, Italy is teeming with unique landscapes, dialects, and culinary traditions. But one thing is universal across these regions: an inherent sense of hospitality rooted in living well and a kind of culinary reverence that every Italian—and every visitor—can appreciate.

A Comprehensive Guide to the 2024 Giro d’Italia

[table-of-contents] stripped

It’s late April, which means it’s almost time for one of the sport’s hardest races in one of the world’s most beautiful locations: the Giro d’Italia , the first of pro cycling’s trifecta of three-week “grand tours.” While not as prestigious as the Tour de France , the Tour of Italy is considered by many to be the hardest grand tour of the season, a race known for its challenging terrain, stunning scenery, and the iconic maglia rosa , the “pink jersey” that’s awarded each day to the leader of the Giro’s General Classification.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Giro d’Italia:

Dates: Saturday, May 4 - Sunday, May 26

How to Watch

If you’re a Max subscriber ($9.99/month), then you have access to the streaming platform’s B/R Sports package, which is the only legal way to stream the Giro d’Italia in the USA. For now, the package is free to all regular Max subscribers, but at some point, it will cost an additional $9.99 each month. That’s not as affordable as GCN+ used to be, but considering everything else you get with the B/R Sports package (such as MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer, and 24 Hours of Le Mans coverage) it’s a pretty good deal.

Max has a user-friendly app for smartphones, streaming devices, game consoles, and smart TVs. There’s also an easy-to-navigate website, which is a helpful option for streaming the race from work. (Don’t worry, we won’t tell your boss.)

You could cancel your monthly subscription at the end of the race, but remember that Max will be offering live streams of many road, mountain, track, and cyclocross races throughout the rest of the year. If that floats your boat, consider getting an annual subscription for $99.99 (or $149.99 for ad-free streaming).

The 107th edition of the Giro d’Italia covers 3,386.7K (2,138 miles) over 21 stages, with two individual time trials, seven stages with uphill finishes, and six to eight stages expected to end with field sprints.

This year’s Grande Partenza takes place in Piemonte, near the French-Italian Alps, with two challenging road stages that will force the Giro’s GC contenders to be at their best right away. Stage 1, a 136K stage from Venaria Reale to Torino, features three categorized climbs–including the Superga and the Colle Maddalena–but it’s a short, punchy, uncategorized ascent just before the finish that could determine the stage winner.

Stage 2 begins in San Francesco al Campo and ends after 150K with this year’s first summit finish–on the Category 1 Santuario di Oropa, the climb on which deceased Italian legend Marco Pantani took one of his most famous stage wins in 1999. By the end of the first weekend, the GC battle will already be in full swing.

The race then begins working its way south, and Stages 3, 4, and 5—which finish in Fossano, Andora, and Lucca, respectively—should be days for the Giro’s sprinters. (Although the finishes of Stages 3 and 4 feature ramps inside the final 10K that could thwart the fast men.) Stage 6 brings the race from the coast into Tuscany (it finishes in Rapolano Terme) and features 12K of the strade bianche (“white gravel roads”) that give March’s Strade Bianche road race its name. If there’s one stage during the first week that has the potential to cause a few surprises, it’s this one.

Stage 7 is the first individual time trial of the Giro, and it’s a tough one: beginning in Foligno, the 37.2K race against the clock starts with over 30K of flat roads. But there’s a nasty sting in the course’s tail: a 6.5K climb to the finish line that starts steep and then ascends more gradually to the line. Riders who don’t pace themselves on the flat part of the course could explode on the final climb. There could be large time gaps here.

Starting in Spoleto, Stage 8 brings the second summit finish of the first week–on the Category 1 Prati di Tivo, a 14K climb in the Umbrian Apennines with an average gradient of 7%. With a field sprint expected in Napoli at the end of Sunday’s Stage 9 (after a 214K stage that starts in Avezzano), Stages 7 and 8 will determine which rider will wear the maglia rosa into the Giro’s first Rest Day.

The second week begins in Pompeii with Stage 10, a 142K stage that features a summit finish on a new climb, the Category 1 Bocca della Selva, a 20.9K climb with a deceiving 4.6% average gradient. The first few kilometers are actually downhill, so the climb is actually harder than its statistics suggest.

We expect Stage 11 (207K) to end with a field sprint in Francavilla al Mare, and Stage 12—with a jagged 190K stage through the Marche region (an area known for its muri or “walls”)—looks like the perfect day for a breakaway filled with puncheurs and riders who perform well in the spring classics. Friday’s Stage 13 is the flattest stage of this year’s race, which is probably a good thing considering the next two stages. This 179K stage from Riccione to Cento will be an active rest day for much of the peloton.

And they’ll need one because the third weekend begins with Stage 14–the Giro’s second individual time trial–a generally flat, 31K course from Castiglione delle Stiviere to Desenzano del Garda. This is a day for the Giro’s time trial specialists; the pure climbers will struggle to stay within shouting distance of their more powerful colleagues.

But they’ll have a chance for revenge on Sunday, when the race heads into the Alps for Stage 15, a 220K monster stage (the longest in this year’s race) with five categorized climbs, including back-to-back 2000m summits (both Category 1 ascents) at the end of the day, with a summit finish at the Mottolino ski resort just above Livigno. This weekend should blow the Giro wide open, leaving just a handful of riders still in contention to win the race overall.

The third week begins the same way the second week ends, with a 200K, high-altitude mountain stage. Stage 16 features the granddaddy of them all: the Stelvio, this year’s “Cima Coppi” as the highest summit in the race. Topping out at over 2700m, the climb comes early in the stage but will nonetheless offer a rude awakening to a peloton that’s coming out of the second Rest Day. After a long ride down into and through a valley, the day ends with the Category 1 Passo Pinei and then a summit finish on the Category 2 Monte Pana, in Santa Cristina in Val Gardena.

At “just” 159K, Stage 17 is much shorter than the previous two mountain stages, but it’s jammed with five categorized climbs, including the Category 2 Passo Sella and the Category 1 Passo Rolle. The day ends with two ascents of the Category 1 Passo Brocon, which the riders climb for a second time on their way to the finish line. This will be an intense stage, and it could pose a challenge for the team defending the pink jersey to control. The riders will be either climbing or descending from start to finish and if someone’s going to stage a third-week ambush, it could come here.

The next two stages offer a break from the mountains. Stage 18 brings a 166K downhill ride from Fiera di Primiero to Padua that should end with a field sprint. Stage 19 looks like the perfect chance for a small group of opportunists–who have likely been saving themselves in the high mountains–to escape and fight for a breakaway stage win in Sappada.

The 154K stage begins in Mortegliano and climbs steadily throughout the day, culminating with three categorized climbs in the second half stage, the last of which the riders summit just 7K from the finish. After so many days of intense climbing–and with one more day in the mountains still to come–the peloton could just sit back and let the break go all the way to the finish.

That sets the stage for Stage 20, the last chance for anyone hoping to steal the 2024 Giro d’Italia from whoever's been leading it. And–as the last two editions have shown us–that’s a realistic possibility. Starting in Alpago, the stage rolls along for about 85K before the first of two ascents of the Monte Grappa, an 18K climb with an average gradient of 8.1%–that’s steep . This isn’t a stage with a summit finish–the race finishes in Bassano del Grappa after a long descent from the top of the Monte Grappa down into the valley below–but even without one, the stage should still provide a dramatic conclusion to the Giro’s GC battle.

The race concludes Sunday in Rome with a 122K road stage featuring several circuits through the Eternal City. The day will begin with clinking glasses of prosecco, and end with one last chance for the sprinters to grab some glory.

You can find the elevation profiles and course maps for each 2024 Giro d’Italia stage here .

What Happened Last Year

For the second year in a row, the 2023 Giro d’Italia was decided on the grand tour’s penultimate day. In 2022, Australia’s Jai Hindley (BORA-hansgrohe) took the pink jersey from Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz (INEOS Grenadiers) on Stage 20. Hindley won a mountain stage at the end of the grand tour’s first week, then hung around near the top of the General Classification before seizing his moment late in the Giro’s final mountain stage and winning the race overall.

In 2023, Slovenia’s Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) followed the same formula, albeit without an early-stage win. After Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step)—who had won two stages and was wearing the pink jersey as the Giro’s overall leader—was forced to abandon the race after testing positive for Covid-19 on the eve of the Giro’s first Rest Day, Great Britain’s Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) took the maglia rosa . With the exception of the two days straddling the second Rest Day, Thomas held the jersey for much of the second and third weeks.

But he cracked on Stage 20, an 18.6K uphill time trial from Tarvisio to the summit of the Monte Lussari. Roglič, who entered the day just 26 seconds behind Thomas on GC, won the stage by 40 seconds, taking the pink jersey–and the 2023 Giro–by a slim margin.

Thomas held on to finish second, and Portugal’s João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) finished third. Italy’s Jonathan Milan (Bahrain-Victorious) won the Points Classification, France’s Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) won the King of the Mountains Classification, and Almeida was the Giro’s Best Young Rider.

Riders to Watch

Tadej pogačar (uae team emirates).

With most of the sport’s best grand tour riders (including Roglič) racing the Tour de France this summer, this year’s Giro has a short list of overall contenders, a list that’s headlined by one of the sport’s true superstars: Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).

The 25-year-old has never raced the Giro, and he takes the starting line this year as the favorite to win and dominate it. Then he’s planning to head to the Tour, where he’s hoping to become the first rider since Italy’s Marco Pantani in 1998 to win the Giro and the Tour in the same season.

Geraint Thomas (INEOS-Grenadiers)

Pogačar’s biggest challenger will likely be Geraint Thomas, who’s coming back to the Giro after last year’s disappointment. The 37-year-old (he’ll turn 38 during the race) will have a strong and experienced team supporting him–and the course suits him–but he’ll have a hard time overcoming Pogačar.

Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike)

We’ll also be keeping an eye on Belgium’s Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike), who made headlines last December when it was announced that he was breaking his contract with BORA-hansgrohe (who had recently signed Roglič away from Jumbo) to join the Dutch superteam.

The winner of the Tour de l‘Avenir in 2022, Uijtdebroeks just turned 21 and is widely considered to be a future grand tour contender. Without Belgium’s Wout van Aert, who’s skipping the Giro due to injuries he sustained in a crash at a race in Belgium a few weeks ago, Uijtdebroeks becomes the focus of the team’s Giro plans. And with a strong squad alongside him, he could finish on the podium and is the easy pick to become the Giro’s Best Young Rider.

Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale)

Other GC contenders include Australia’s Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), a former fourth-place finisher at the Tour de France and Giro stage-winner; Italy’s Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious), a former Giro podium-finisher; Colombia’s Daniel Martinez (BORA-hansgrohe), a former fifth-place finisher at the Giro; Great Britain’s Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost), a two-time top-10 finisher; and France’s Romain Bardet (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), a former Tour de France podium finisher who was seventh at the Giro in 2021 but might be more of stage hunter this year.

Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek)

Other stage hunters include Italy’s Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), a three-time stage winner who was the Giro’s King of the Mountains in 2019; France’s Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), who’s riding his first Giro; and Canada’s Michael Woods (Israel-PremierTech), who’s hoping to complete a hat-trick of grand tour stage victories with a win in Italy.

Nairo Quintana (Movistar)

One of the most controversial riders in this year’s Giro will be Colombia’s Nairo Quintana (Movistar), winner of the Giro in 2014. But the 34-year-old hasn’t raced since finishing sixth overall in the 2022 Tour de France and then having his results disqualified after testing positive for tramadol, a painkiller that’s banned by the UCI (but not banned by WADA). He’s now back in the WorldTour with the team that made him famous. His return has not been a popular one , though, and it will be interesting to see how he’s received in Italy.

The Giro also offers several stage win opportunities for field sprinters, and that–plus the fact that the Tour de France is very not sprinter-friendly–means there will be lots of them taking the start, including Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek); Belgium’s Tim Merlier (Soudal–Quick Step); Dutch sprinters Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), and Australia’s Sam Welsford (BORA-Hansgrohe), Caleb Ewan (Jayco AlUla) and Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck); and Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty).

Last but not least, the Giro will see several North Americans taking the start, with Americans Larry Warbasse (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Magnus Sheffield (INEOS Grenadiers), and Will Barta (Movistar) joining Woods on the starting line, with more expected to join them as teams finalize their rosters.

With a clear favorite, two time trials, and majestic mountain passes, cycling’s most beautiful Grand Tour promises a spectacle at its finest.

Is innsbruck europe’s new summer fun capital.

Hosting the Winter Olympics in 1964 — and again in 1976 when Denver backed out after originally securing the games — transformed Innsbruck into a superstar for snow and ice sports.

It’s still a great place to downhill and snowboard, ski touring through the backcountry, fly off the end of the colossal ski jump, attempting a figure skating spin on a local ice rink or — if you dare — flying off the legendary Bergisel (“Ice Mountain”) ski jump.

But over the past few decades, the Austrian city has emerged as a summer fun capital too, one of the best places in Europe for hiking, biking, climbing, river sports, and even motorized off-roading.

Here are a few ways to get your adrenaline pumping this summer in and around Innsbruck.

Hike To Your Heart’s Content

Those who want to hike Innsbruck are confronted with a huge problem. Not the altitude or the steepness of some paths, but deciding exactly which trail you’re going to follow. The choice is mind blowing.

The popular AllTrails hiking app describes and maps 55 trails in and around Innsbruck and more than 400 walking routes in the surrounding region.

A great way to start is riding the double Nordkette cable cars to the summit of Hafelekar mountain (a.k.a. the “Top of Innsbruck”), where a short walk from the top station leads to panoramic views of the Inn Valley and the Austrian Alps, with southern Germany and northern Italy in the hazy distance.

From there you can continue along the Goetheweg trail along the crest of the Nordkette range to the Pfeishütte mountain hut, a roundtrip of roughly 8.4 miles (13.5 km).

The Goetheweg forms a small part of three far more challenging hiking routes that you can hop onto from Innsbruck: the new Karwendel High Trail (43 miles/70 km) through the Alpine wilderness north of Innsbruck and the epic Europe E4 hiking path that runs more than 7,500 miles (12,090 km) from southern Spain all the way through the Alps and the Balkans to Greece.

The iconic walk south of the Inn Valley is the 70-mile (120-km) Stubai Hohenweg trek through the Alps between Innsbruck and the Italian border.

Design Your Own Tour de Alps

Whether you’re a leisurely biker or an adventurous cyclist, Innsbruck offers two-wheel choices for just about everyone.

Regular and e-bike rentals for road and off-road cycling are available at numerous outlets in and around the city. Routes range from flat, easy bike paths on both sides of the River Inn in the city center to marathon Innradweg road cycling route that meanders 320 miles (520 km) through the Alps.

Once the snow melts, Bikepark Innsbruck takes over the Muttereralm snow sports area on the valley’s south side. The park features seven forest and mountain trails, a pump track and dual slalom course, a special area for kids and beginners, and access to a 13-mile (21-km) long-distance mountain biking route to three Alpine huts with food and drink.

Innsbruck’s public transport and cable cars convey cycles and the many biker friendly hotels provide secure storage and bike washing areas. The city also hosts the Crankworx gravity-fueled mountain bike festival in June, an event that attracts top riders from around the globe.

Alpine Mountain Highs

Avid peak baggers use Innsbruck as their basecamp for conquering the many Alpine summits that bookend the city on north and south. Among the region’s 90 multi-pitch routes is the intimidating and often snow-topped Hohe Munde (“High Mouth”), a gigantic peak that towers 8,733 feet (2,662 meters) above the Inn Valley.

More than two dozen sports climbing areas include cliffsides pitches besides the River Inn and precipitous rock faces near the middle Nordkette cable car station. Veterans and beginners can perfect their technique at four indoor climbing centers that operate year-round.

In addition, there are 10 do-it-yourself Via Ferrata routes in the Innsbruck region — high-altitude routes that include permanent steel ladders and cables to assist climbers.

Après Sweat

Post hiking, biking and climbing, Innsbruck offers a lot of cool spots to refresh and refuel.

A half-hour hike through the woods from the bottom Nordkette cable car station, Umbrueggler Alm mountain hut restaurant complements its panoramic views with hearty Austrian dishes like wiener schnitzel and frittatensuppe (pancake soup) on a sun-splashed outdoor patio.

Down in the old town, drink in the awesome views and the craft libations at the 360° Bar, a spectacular glass-enclosed café/lounge on the roof of the RathausGalerien on Maria-Theresien-Straße. The prosecco and Lillet blends are especially tasty.

For a slice of history, dine at the Weisses Röessl (“White Stallion”), founded around 600 years ago and the only remaining of four restaurants that once graced the old town’s Vier-Viecher-Eck (Four Beasts Corner). Many of the dishes are also oldies-but-goodies: schöps pfannenbratl (lamb stew), hauspfandl (pork medallions with spaetzle noodles), and Tiroler ghröstl (roast potatoes with a fried egg and bacon cabbage salad).

If you’re staying two or more nights in Innsbruck between May 1 st and October 31 st consider investing in a Welcome Card , which includes free public transportation in the city and region, 24 hours of free rental bike, free guided hiking and e-bike tours, and discounts on many activities and attractions.

Lidl-Trek out on the Vuelta Femenina TTT course

Lidl-Trek won stage 1 and took control of the Vuelta Femenina by Carrefour.es with victory in the team time trial in Valencia, despite a crash on the final corner of the course that saw Elynor Bäckstedt and time trial specialist Ellen van Dijk come off their bikes.

The American team set the fastest time of the day, pipping Visma-Lease a Bike by just two hundredths of a second and gaining a single second on their main GC rivals, the third-placed SD Worx-Protime .

The margin of victory, and the general classification gains, might not have been so tight were it not for the crash inside the final kilometre, which saw Bäckstedt and Van Dijk slide out on a 90-degree right-hand bend.

The crash cut the group in half, leaving the remaining riders scrambling to gather themselves and drag GC leaders Gaia Realini and Elisa Longo Borghini to the line.

Realini, who spent much of the TTT on the back of the line given her diminutive frame, was duly ushered through and crossed the line first to pull on the red jersey as the first overall leader of this year's Vuelta.

"I’m really happy about the result for me and the team, but I’m not happy because in the last corner two of my teammates crashed," Realini said. "But we will focus for the next stage. For sure we will take this jersey and defend for the next stage."

On a day that featured strong rides for a number of teams, the final standings saw just 10 seconds separating the top seven teams, with Canyon-SRAM in fourth at eight seconds despite starting with just five riders - two short of the maximum seven - due to illnesses.

As such, it did not turn out to be a hugely signifcant day for the general classification, and while Lidl-Trek may regret the fact they could have put a few more seconds into the race favourite Demi Vollering (SD Worx) they'll be glad to have averted disaster by salvaging the stage victory.

How it played out

Spain’s third largest city Valencia played host to the first stage of the second edition of the revamped Vuleta Femenina, sponsored by Carrefour.es. Just as in 2023, and in line with tradition in the men's Vuelta, stage 1 featured a team time trial, showcasing some of the city’s most striking architectural features. Beginning in front of the L'Àgora building, the pan-flat profile took the teams out along the CV-500 coastal motorway before heading back to the finish line, in front of the unique Oceanogràfic aquarium.

With the running order predetermined by Vuelta organisers in order to maximise entertainment value, it was unsurprising to see the Continental-level teams heading off first, with the biggest WorldTour outfits following later on in the day.

Norway’s Team Coop-Repsol were the first team to take to the 16km long course and under cloudy skies they headed out along the coastal road and back again, as the teams behind rolled off the start ramp at three-minute intervals. Coop-Repsol set a solid time of 20:48.65 and held onto the lead for a short while, until Lotto Dstny Ladies and VolkerWessels Women’s Pro Cycling Team set new fastest times in quick succession.

EF Cannondale set the first big benchmark time

EF Cannondale set the first big benchmark time

None of the early teams could come close to the time set by EF Education Cannondale though; they cut over 50 seconds off the time of VolkerWessels and were the first to go under 20 minutes, setting the new fastest time at 19:29.39.

EF’s time held firm in the face of serious challenges from Liv-AlUla Jayco, who fell short by just one second, and FDJ-SUEZ who came even closer, missing out on taking the lead by just seven hundredths of a second.

It took last year’s team time trial victors Visma-Lease a Bike to break the American team’s hold on the lead, and they did so by nine seconds, as the final teams left the start ramp to take on the course.

Visma would miss out by the finest of margins

Visma would miss out by the finest of margins

Two of the final teams down the ramp were arguably the two favourites for the race, Lidl-Trek and Team SD Worx ProTime. In Ellen van Dijk and Marlen Reusser respectively, both of these teams contained former World Individual Time Trial champions and it was clear from the intermediate splits that both teams would push Visma-Lease A Bike’s time close.

Lidl-Trek were first to come to the line, but disaster struck as they rounded the final corner heading toward the finish line, with Backstedt and Van Dijk crashing, leaving the rest of the team in disarray as they raced for the line.

They were still able to take the lead by just 0.02 seconds, which was enough to seal the victory despite their misfortune, as Team SD Worx ProTime arrived one seconds behind the winning time of 19:20.

SD Worx out on the TTT course

The final team down the ramp were the home side Movistar, team of last year’s champion – though Annemiek van Vleuten, having since retired, does not return to defend her title. They were unable to beat the time posted by Lidl-Trek though, posting the eighth fastest time overall.

The times set by the teams determine the order of the general classification going into the rest of the week, so those teams who lost time will have some work to do to make up the differences. All the major leaders maintained close order though, with just 10 seconds separating the top seven teams, meaning the gaps are far from insurmountable heading into the first road stage beginning in Buñol tomorrow – a day that looks likely to end in a bunch sprint.
