My Other Bike: Classic Trek USPS 5200

Back in 2000, an up-and-coming country cyclist by the name of Gareth Fuller made the Nationals as an Under 15. His parents celebrated by buying him a replica Tour de France-winning Trek 5200. More than two decades later he still owns it—and rode it to finish sixth overall in the inaugural 170km Mudgee Classic back in May.

Strolling around the Glen Willow Regional Sporting Complex at the end of the 2021 Mudgee Classic, carbon bikes are a dime a dozen. There are literally hundreds of them everywhere you look, mostly of similar vintage and styling.

But on closer inspection, one stands out. Resplendent in a decidedly retro livery of blue and white with red ‘Trek’ decals, it belongs to local Mudgee rider Gareth Fuller who has just piloted it to finish sixth place in the inaugural 170km Maxi Classic, with an average speed of over 40kph.

Hand-built in the USA, and no doubt considered an absolute rocket ship in its day, Gareth Fuller’s replica 1999 US Postal Service Trek 5200 instantly conjures images—historic and contentious—of Lance Armstrong, George Hincapie and Co smashing the peloton across the countryside and mountains of France.

Gareth explains his parents bought him the bike new from Sydney’s iconic Clarence Street Cyclery back in 2000, just after he’d made the U15 Nationals.

Considering he still rides it some 21 years later, it’s no surprise to learn the frame and handle bars are the only original parts left, with several modifications initially required to keep pace with his growing body, as well as numerous other component upgrades along the way.

“As I got the bike so young, I pretty quickly outgrew the seatpost and the head stem,” he says explaining the Trek 5200 isn’t an actual team issue, rather a team replica.

“It’s a full carbon (OCLV) fibre frame with alloy drop-outs. It was originally running an Ultegra 6500 groupset with Rolf Vector wheels, but these days it has Dura Ace 7800 with Dura Ace WH-7800 wheels. The current headset was actually changed the day before the Mudgee Classic as the bearings were buggered!”

Casting an eye over Gareth’s pride and joy from close quarters, it’s clearly been very well used and certainly carries a few battle scars. But, as he points out, it’s also spent its fair share of time off the road over the past two decades.

“I’ve ridden it, on and off, ever since I got it,” Gareth says. “Unfortunately, not long after we first bought it, I had glandular fever—for about five years I barely rode it at all. Then I had a short stint of racing in my early 20s, before I decided to go travelling. I actually took the bike with me to Italy with the idea of doing some riding and racing over in Europe. But it didn’t make it out of my mate’s shed!

“…I just love riding it in big bunches and testing myself against all the new carbon bikes…”

“It literally sat in his shed for a couple of years, before I finally brought it back home to Australia,” he continues.

“In my late 20s, I took it out for a few celebrity appearances here and there. But it was when I hit my 30s and started doing triathlons that I really began to ride it again. Would you believe it’s actually been my only road bike? I’ve become very attached to it.”

Gareth reveals he even has nickname for his beloved Trek. “I call it ‘Lance’ and always joke that I’m channelling his climbing ability when I ride it!” he laughs. “After all, thinking your bike climbs well is 90% of the struggle, right?”

Clearly, cycling technology has come an enormous way during the past 20 years. Does Gareth ever envisage a time when they’ll have to part ways?

“No, I don’t think so. I just love riding it in big bunches and testing myself against all the new carbon bikes. That said, I will probably be getting a new bike soon as I begin to race again. But I will definitely keep this one as a special occasion and classics bike.”

Trek 5500 full carbon fiber road bike.

US Postal Service Team colors (special edition)

Full OCLV 120 carbon frame and fork

Same exact bike ridden in two Tour de France victories.

This bike was $3800 new.

Mostly Shimano Dura Ace components.

Fork:  ICON Air Rail (full carbon) Headset: 1 1/8″ threadless Cane Creek S-2 Wheels: Bontrager Race Lite  (newer than the frame) Tires: Bontrager Derailleurs: Shimano Dura Ace Shifters: Shimano 105 Crankset: Shimano Dura Ace Cassette: SRAM 11-26 (brand new!) Saddle: Bontrager Handlebar: Bontrager 440mm Brake Calipers: Shimano Dura Ace Chain:  brand new!

Bike is clean and perfectly tuned and ready to ride… but cosmetically a little rough from normal wear and tear.  Just replaced the chain and cassette so those have zero miles.  Also just wrapped the bars in new black tape.  Cables and housings also newer.

Stem was slammed–with a 17 degree stem–but we’ve reversed it to bring the bars back up to a comfortable position.  Easy to flip back over if you want to get super aero.  We also have other stem options available for dialing in the fit.

Excellent bike for the MS-150, Tour de Houston, Katy Flatlands, Bike Around the Bay… or just the occasional weekend bike ride.  We’ve bought / sold / owned / ridden many many many USPS Team bikes like this one–in their various color configurations–and we always questions and comments on those bikes when we do group rides.  Even with Lance’s dramatic fall from grace, that era still influenced a lot of riders; I can still remember staying up all night here in the states to watch live Tour de France coverage to see what amazing feats Lance would manage to pull off next.

The saddle isn’t original–it’s newer and a bit more comfortable than the factory USPS team saddle… but I think we still have a couple of those in the saddle box… so I could swap that out if so desired.

Trek 5200 US Postal Carbon Road Bike 2002

Description.

Trek is one of the most influencing brands of the last decades. Starting as a little company with 5 employees, the company from Waterloo, Wisconsin became one of the biggest players on the market. Probably the biggest brakethrough in the company's history was the introduction of OCLV carbon frames in the early 90s combined with the partnership with the U.S. Postal Service Pro Cycling Team . Trek bikes became famous worldwide and reached a tremendous rate of success.

The Trek 5200 road bike we present you here is based on the same frame USPS team rode in the 2002 season and it also sports the same team color scheme. Trek advertised this heavily with slogans like "now USPS Team can ride the same stock frame you do". As the 5200 model, it is equipped mostly with Shimano Ultegra parts, with an exception of the Dura-Ace crankset. Even some of the parts are the same spec as the team version such as the Deda Newton bars. This bike is further equipped with Mavic red anodized rims, FSA stem, Selcof seatpost or Selle Italia saddle.

This already classic US made bike is a great ride and with the team color scheme, it certainly looks sharp too. Regardless of how we think about the famous / now infamous American squad, only humans are riding bikes - bikes themselves remain innocent.

Project Postal: Bringing an old Trek back into service!

Two thousand and two. Nelly was getting Hot in Herrrrrre, Christina Aguilera got Dirrrrrty and the first mobile phone with a built-in camera was released in the USA. Meanwhile in the world of pro cycling, US Postal were dominating the scene on their carbon fibre Treks and Lance Armstrong was the undisputed king.

I’ve been on the hunt for a “classic” Trek 5200/5500 for some time now. It’s been fuelled even more so by  Big Jim of Fit Recovery’s beautifully restored Trek 5200 . They’re getting rare in general, even rarer to see in Tasmania, rarer still to see one for sale! So when one popped up on a local buy and sell group, my interest was peaked.

Unfortunately I was looking down the barrel of a 700km (440 mile) round trip to look at it, so when the owner said he could get it down to Hobart for me, I jumped at the chance! You don’t have to ask me twice! I said I’d take it. Cash. Sight unseen. I didn’t even haggle over the (already very reasonable) price he was asking.

Above was the photo from the ad. If you ever want a masterclass in how NOT to photograph a bike for sale, take a good look at the photo and that basically covers all of it.

It was a gamble, but I think it’s paid off. The fact it’s got full US Postal team paintwork made the find even sweeter! From my research and the paint, I make it a 2002 model Trek 5200 (the 5200’s were Ultegra and the 5500’s Dura Ace, frames identical). He even threw in a pair of new cycling shoes which just happened to be my size! #winning

The frameset is in great condition for it’s age. It’s certainly been ridden but it’s a well cared for single owner bike from new. It’s even got frame wrap to protect against cable rub. Running gear is currently the original full Shimano Ultegra (9-speed) with a properly old school hard man’s 53/39T big dog!

My first job will be to strip it down for a full clean and inspection before I decide what direction I’m going to head. Do I keep it original? Or update to modern 11-speed components? It’s going to get ridden so it’s got to be good! More to follow as I get stuck into this beauty. Oh how I do LOVE a good project! :-)

I actually can’t believe my luck! It’ll be a while before she’s “road ready” but I can’t wait to ride it with modern parts!

i have this bike in near mint 58cm if interested.

The woman who is the driving force behind my Monday rides actually rides this bike. It belongs to her father and is not a perfect fit for her…but it looks awesome. She is planning on getting something at the end of the season. As for you…Awesome find. Enjoy the rehabbing of the bike and the rides you are going to have with it.

This is not a bike for me…cool though it is.

Need to get the valves lines up at 6 o’clock and the cranks at 3 o’clock and send it in to the GCN show for ‘Nice’ or Supernice’. It’s a Supernice from me. Since it’s rare and in such good condition my vote would be to keep it original because that’s got to be more exclusive than most of the the other 5200’s out there.

Thanks Steve! I’ve taken a “proper” lined up photo of the bike, but the previous owner didn’t line up the tyre logos with valve stems. How rude! I’ll clean up the original parts and see what takes my fancy.

I say get the 11-speed on the back, but keep the “Big Boy” crankset, please, for the love of all that’s holy, don’t put a compromise set of chainrings on the front! Very nice find indeed!

Haha nope the 53/39 has GOT to go! It’s way too hilly round here for that! Okay, so maybe it’s because my little legs are just too weak… 😅

i have this bike in 58cm. i love riding it but its a bit big i need a 54. willing to sell or trade. i really havent tried selling it. its just beautiful to.look at

In 1999 Trek Bicycles became the first bike manufacturers outside of Europe to win the world’s most prestigious bicycle race, the Tour de France , with US Postal Service leader  Lance Armstrong ‘s triumphant performance. Armstrong and his unrelenting teammates race on stock Trek 5500 OCLV carbon frames, making them the only team in the Tour de France to race on frames identical to those that are available to consumers around the globe. Thanks to Optimum Compaction, Low Void ( OCLV ) technology, the 5500 was the world’s lightest production frameset, weighing in at a scant 912g .

We are offering  a very very similar bike to TDF 1999 winner’s bike Lance Armstrong . Same frame and size, same groupset, same saddle and handlebar type, same wheelset. Needless to say that this bicycle is a unique piece. Very good condition , with Octalink computer included.
