Tour de Romandie 2022 - Route, predictions and contenders
Who will take victory in the 2022 Tour de Romandie, the week-long stage race in Switzerland featuring Giro d'Italia and Tour de France contenders?
Words: Katy Madgwick

The 75 th Tour de Romandie takes place from Tuesday April 26th to Sunday May 1st. Staged in the French-speaking Romandy region of Switzerland, the race has been held annually since its inception in 1947, with the exception of 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The final multi-stage race before the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de Romandie is often used as preparation for the teams and riders that will head to Italy to fight it out for the maglia rosa. In the past it has been be seen as a key indicator of success in the Tour de France – most recently Cadel Evans, Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome won both races in the same year, in 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively, although it has been nine years since this double has been repeated.
The race consists of six stages and offers tests of all varieties, including opportunities for sprinters, punchers and climbers. It’s topped and tailed by rides against the clock – beginning with a short prologue and finishing with an individual time-trial. Whilst renowned for its stunning mountain stages, the race is usually won by a strong time-triallist.

Prologue: Lausanne – Lausanne (5.1km ITT)
STAGE 1 – LA GRANDE BÉROCHE – ROMONT (178km)
The stage finishes with two local loops of the Romont area, each just under 40km and taking in a double ascent of the Massonens climb. It’s a stage suited to a spritely breakaway, and with a summit finish into the town of Romont it might be a day for a puncheur to take victory.
STAGE 2 – ECHALLENS – ECHALLENS (168.2km)
The day begins uphill, and is another day of ups and downs, but with the third category La Praz ascent almost perfectly bisecting the route profile, there is plenty of time for the sprinters’ teams to chase down any hopeful baroudeurs and allow the opportunity for a bunch sprint finish.
STAGE 3 – VALBROYE – VALBROYE (165.1km)
The stage travels around the local hills with barely a suggestion of flat all day. It will appeal to punchy riders and breakaway artists, but with just one mountainous stage left before the final time trial, expect some movement among the GC riders too.
STAGE 4 – AIGLE – ZINAL (180.1km)
With over 3000m of ascent on the cards, the first 55km or so of flat riding would be welcomed, however the breakaway will fight hard to establish themselves with one final chance for the climbers to shine, and the lion’s share of points in the KOM competition up for grabs.
Then the climbing begins in earnest. Five category one climbs and one category two will test the riders and separate the GC contenders from the bunch as they aim to gain as much time as possible going into the final time-trial. The race ascends into the region’s stunning ski resorts and with an uphill finish into Zinal, it’s a true beast of a day befitting the Tour de Romandie.
STAGE 5 – AIGLE – VILLARS (15.8km)
The final outcome of the GC race will not be decided until after the time-trial has concluded – expect a reshuffling of top positions and possibly even a new leader rounding out the week in the green leader’s jersey.
While Ineos Grenadiers have been dominating the headlines following their fantastic Spring Classics performances, they have been quietly amassing strong performances in stage races too. Dani Martínez won at Itzulia Basque Country and Eddie Dunbar at Coppi e Bartali, and they’ve had a range of stage wins along the way from the likes of Magnus Sheffield, Carlos Rodríguez and Ethan Hayter. They bring a young, exciting team to Romandy in support of defending champion Geraint Thomas, including Sheffield and Hayter, along with German sprinter Kim Heiduk, Eddie Dunbar and Lucas Plapp. Whether they opt to work for the veteran or hedge their bets and give one of the young guns a run at the GC, there’s no doubt they will animate the race along the way.
Primož Roglič is a two-time previous winner of the race but he doesn’t attend this year; he has been struggling with a knee injury and in his stead, Jumbo Visma send most of his Tour de France team along to get some racing in their legs. With time-trialling playing an integral part in the GC competition, Rohan Dennis may well be leader for the team, with an in-form Steven Kruijswijk providing another option and Sepp Kuss as mountain super-domestique.
UAE Team Emirates seem to suffer from a lack of leadership without Tadej Pogačar present, as was seen at Volta a Catalunya, and once again they will arrive in Romandy with a number of leadership options. With the likes of Juan Ayuso, Marc Hirschi and Brandon McNulty (above) all showing good form so far this season, it remains to be seen whether this young team can unite behind one leader, or whether they will once again throw everything at the metaphorical wall and see what sticks.
A number of riders who have fared well in other mountainous stage races will offer a stiff challenge to the front runners. Ion Izagirre came second in the GC at Itzulia and is one of a number of riders reanimating Cofidis in the 2022 season. Damiano Caruso won the Tour of Sicily riding for a select Italian squad; at Romandie he is supported by a strong team including super-domestique Gino Mäder. Bora-hansgrohe’s Sergio Higuita won the Volta a Catalunya although he retired from Itzulia so his condition remains to be seen.
EF Education-EasyPost bring a team packed with climbing talent. They are likely to go for GC with Rigoberto Urán but with Neilson Powless, Mark Padun and Odd Christian Eiking among their number, they have chances for stage wins too.
Other contenders include Groupama-FDJ who bring a strong climbing contingent including Thibaut Pinot and Michael Storer, both of whom have ridden well this week at the Tour of the Alps. Quick-Step-Alpha Vinyl will hunt stages with the likes of Mattia Cattaneo and Remy Cavagna for the time-trials and Mikkel Honoré and Mauro Schmid for longer climbing stages. Israel Premier-Tech have a stage winner from last year, Michael Woods, among their ranks, along with Jakob Fuglsang and Chris Froome.
It’s a tough one to call but with the right combination of climbing ability and tim- trialling chops, if his team are able to get their act together and work as a unit, we think UAE Team Emirates’ Brandon McNulty could edge out strong opposition from Jumbo Visma, Ineos and Bora to take the overall victory at Romandie.

Tour de Romandie: Bevin wins stage 3 ahead of Hayter
No change in GC with Rohan Dennis in lead
Patrick Bevin secured a key victory for Israel-Premier Tech on Friday in stage 3 of the Tour of Romandie as the New Zealander launched a devastatingly powerful late acceleration to win a small group sprint.
Bevin's faultless timed charge for the line left the recent Tour of Turkey winner well clear of stage favourite Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) and race leader Rohan Dennis (Jumbo-Visma) in the first WorldTour victory for Israel-Premier Tech this season.
During the hilly 165 kilometre trek starting and finishing in Valbroye, Hayter's Ineos Grenadiers team had successfully re-applied their stage two strategy of whittling down the peloton, with two late third category climbs helping the British team wean out their rivals.
But when Bevin jumped away after a late right-hand corner, he seemingly caught Hayter on the back foot. His victory simultaneously propelled the 31-year-old into second overall, 14 seconds down on Dennis, now race leader for a third straight day.
"It's been a really long time since I've even sprinted, I got a bit pushed around yesterday in the big tailwind sprint and kind of dusted myself off today and thought I would give it a go," Bevin said afterwards.
Bevin said his reasoning to himself for having a go at the sprint was that "It's going to be reduced, it's going to be tired legs and I'm going to be one of the fastest guys left." As for how it felt to take such an important victory, Bevin's reply was "While it was nice to win in Turkey, it's amazing to win here."
How it unfolded
With the week's warm, dry weather continuing for the hilliest stage of the 2022 Romandie so far, Ineos Grenadiers were once again determined to set things up for a possible third win in four days for Hayter.
A three-man move by Nans Peters (AG2R-Citroën), Krist Neilands (Israel Premier Tech) and French National Champion Remi Cavagna (Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl) was thus only given a scant four-minute margin of freedom before the British team began piling on the pressure behind.
The trio's lead quickly crumpled and on the first of late two third category ascents, the Dompierre, a brief attempt by Peters to go solo was quickly crushed. By the summit, just 70 riders remained in the front group.
Jumbo-Visma picked up the pace with Steven Kruijswijk doing a lot of the work on the final climb, the much steeper ascent of Sedeilles. Yet when Carlos Verona (Movistar) made the most determined attack, tellingly it was Ineos Grenadiers riders Luke Plapp and Andrey Amador who quickly marshalled the pursuit of the rider from Madrid.
An interesting-looking attack by local Swiss star Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) and Ben O'Connor (AG2R-Citróen) over the summit of Sédeilles was met with an even shorter shrift from Ineos Grenadiers. Equally, a powerful lone late surge away by Estonia's Rein Taaramae (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) was summarily crushed by Ineos' defending champion Geraint Thomas.
But having put in all the hard yards, a sharp right-hand bend in the last kilometre and Bevin's stunning late acceleration undid all Ineos' previous efforts in an instant and simultaneously netted the New Zealander his third win in less than a fortnight.
After the opening prologue and three hilly stages, Romandie now moves into the mountains with a vengeance on Saturday with a crunch stage including five first category climbs, running from Aigle to a near-summit finish at Zinal.

VERNIER, Switzerland (AP) — Carlos Rodriguez protected his yellow jersey through a rain-soaked final stage Sunday to win the six-day Tour of Romandie for the biggest race victory of his career.
Four previous winners in the French-speaking region of Switzerland went on to win that season’s Tour de France, including Chris Froome in 2013. Rodriguez placed fifth in cycling’s marquee event last year and won a stage.
Rodriguez started Sunday’s flat stage that looped round the suburbs of Geneva — won in a sprint finish by Dorian Godon — with a seven-second lead he took by placing third in a mountain stage Saturday.
The 23-year-old Ineos Grenadiers rider kept that winning margin over runner-up Aleksandr Vlasov, the 2022 Romandie winner. Third-placed Florian Lipowitz was third, trailing Rodriquez by nine seconds.
Godon sealed his second stage win this week, edging Simone Consonni with Dion Smith third.

Rodriguez wins Tour de Romandie as Godon edges final stage
Leysin (Switzerland) (AFP) – Ineos Grenadier rider Carlos Rodriguez won the Tour de Romandie on Sunday as Dorian Godon took the sprint in the fifth and final stage in Vernier, near Geneva.
Issued on: 28/04/2024 - 16:39
It marked a first World Tour stage race victory for the 23-year-old Spaniard who finished seven seconds ahead of Alexandre Vlasov in the general classification.
The Russian was a further two seconds clear of German rookie Florian Lipowitz, his Bora teammate.
Rodriguez took the overall lead when he finished third in Saturday's mountainous 'queen' stage and had little difficulty in maintaining it in the straightforward 150.8km final stage.
He was content to stay in the peloton, surrounded by his Ineos team-mates, including Colombian Egan Bernal.
Rodriguez showed his potential last year by winning a mountain stage of the Tour de France in Morzine and then finishing fifth overall in Paris on his first appearance.
In early form this season, he won the final stage of the Tour of the Basque Country three weeks ago and took second place overall.
Sunday provided a second stage win of the race for French rider Godon (Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale), who had already won the opener on Wednesday.
"Cycling is all about spirals and confidence," the 27-year-old told L'Equipe. "My team-mates did a great job for me."

Rodriguez falls short of compliments after grueling work by Arensman, Bernal and INEOS: "Winning Romandie would be amazing"
Carlos Rodriguez is now a serious contender to win the Tour of Romandie. The 23-year-old Spaniard from INEOS Grenadiers took the lead during the fourth stage on Saturday, by finishing third on an uphill stretch, surpassing Juan Ayuso of UAE-Team Emirates and claiming the leader's jersey.
It was clear from the start that Rodriguez had plans. INEOS Grenadiers took advantage of all five categorized climbs to push the pace and put everyone to the test. Among others, Thymen Arensman led the way for a long time. On the final climb to Leysin, Ayuso had to drop back when Egan Bernal went for a first acceleration. Once INEOS realized this, Bernal ceased his attack and went all out to set the pace for his teammate. Rodriguez then held his ground, although he had to leave the stage victory to Richard Carapaz.
"I'm really happy, and super proud of the effort and commitment of the team throughout the stage," Rodriguez said afterwards on Eurosport . "We didn't know how things would turn out, but they had trust in me. I'm really happy with that trust and that I could in the end deliver a good result. It's not over yet, we still have one more day to fight. I will give everything to try to keep this jersey."
Rodriguez not yet celebrating his first overall victory in a stage race
The fact that the final stage is likely to end in a sprint is of no concern to INEOS Grenadiers at the moment. "We can't relax yet, we will only do that tomorrow after the stage is done. Hopefully, then we can celebrate something. Winning the Tour of Romandie would be amazing. I have won some races before, but never a general classification. That would be really important for me to achieve."
Indeed, Rodriguez has never won a stage race before, although he has certainly proven himself capable in such competitions. In his very first grand tour in 2022, he finished seventh in the Vuelta a España, and in his Tour de France debut in 2023, he secured fifth place in the general classification. His achievements include stage wins in the Tour of the Basque Country (2022 and 2024), the national title in 2022, a stage win in the 2023 Tour de France, and a stage victory in the Tour of Britain that same year.

The Tour de Romandie visited Romont in 2019 with a similar finish. Back then, David Gaudu powered to triumph ahead of Rui Costa and Primoz Roglic.
The race kicks into gear on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel and after 37 kilometres on the flat the riders enter the hills. The first climb is 2 kilometres and the average gradients sits at 6.1%. The sprint for KOM points is in Sunchy, but there’s no ensuing descent, as the route continues to climb at shallow gradients.
The race is straightforward. Although the route is far from flat, the climbs are neither long nor tough in itself. De ascents to Esmonts (7 kilometres at 4%) and Massonnens (twice, 2 kilometres at 6.1%) stand out.
Since the riders enter the finishing circuit after approximately 80 kilometres, they’ll have ample time to take in the finish. In fact, they will have crossed the line twice before it’s for the win.
The parcours includes a total elevation gain of almost 3,000 metres.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.
