 Usually, the first question I receive when talking about traveling for one week in the Dominican Republic with a rental car (or any other duration) is if it is safe to do so in the country. The clear answer to this is yes! There are particular things you have to take care of, but most of the security recommendations apply to all Latin American countries. Don’t flash any jewelry, avoid visiting obscure places in cities at night, be careful when approached by strangers and – particularly important when traveling the Dominican Republic with a rental car – don’t leave any valuables in the car, particularly not visible from outside.

One issue might be driving in the Dominican Republic, which is particularly crazy sometimes, especially in the city. If you have never rented a vehicle abroad, you might be better off with a private driver, but otherwise, you shall be fine. Just remind yourself to drive defensively and always watch what’s happening around you, so that you are not going to overlook any motorcycles, dogs or villagers which always might pop up to the left, right or in front of your car.

Dominican Republic 2-week itinerary

 Let’s start straight with the Dominican Republic 2-week itinerary. Note that 2 weeks aren’t a fixed duration. Throughout this road-trip itinerary, you will find plenty of options mentioned to shorten or extend this trip to the Dominican Republic, hence you can use this as a draft as well for your vacation lasting 10 days, 3 weeks or even if you just have 1 week in the Dominican Republic. Day 1: Arrival in the Dominican Republic

 This day marks the start of your Dominican Republic vacation. Especially when you are not interested in the plenty of all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana , you can fly straight into Santo Domingo as this is the best starting point to explore the Dominican Republic on your own. There are plenty of direct flights from the United States (including New York, Miami, Charlotte, Atlanta, Dallas, Boston, Philadelphia, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Washington and Newark) and other countries, such as Canada, Colombia, Spain, France, Mexico and Panama.

 Alternatively, if you have already booked your flight to Punta Cana or if flight connections from your departure airport are significantly better to Punta Cana, this is also not a problem, as Punta Cana is only 2.5 hours away from Punta Cana. If you arrive there, just take a shuttle to Santo Domingo, either from your hotel or directly from Punta Cana International Airport .

 It doesn’t matter if you arrive at Punta Cana Airport or Santo Domingo Las Américas International Airport , I would not recommend picking up your rental car right after your flight. First of all, you might be overwhelmed arriving in a new country and driving your own car immediately, and second, you absolutely won’t need a rental car in Santo Domingo, hence it is better to pick it up when you leave the city.

 When booking your hotel in Santo Domingo, I’d highly recommend a hotel in the Colonial Zone * as this is where most of the things are happening in the city. You will spend at least 90% of your time in the Zona Colonial , hence with booking accommodation right in this area, you save yourself a lot of time and money by avoiding taxis, Ubers and the notorious traffic jams of the city.  This day in this ultimate Dominican Republic itinerary is completely reserved for Santo Domingo , the bustling and multi-cultural capital of the Dominican Republic.

After breakfast in your hotel or one of the multi-faceted coffee shops in the Colonial Zone , you can explore the unique history and colonial vibe of the area. The Zona Colonial or simply “La Zona”, as Dominicans are calling them, can be explored entirely by foot, as its size is less than a square mile.

 If you’d like to know more about the history, you can also explore the area with a guide. They are usually available on spot in the pedestrian zone El Conde, even though if you are looking for a guide with proper English, it might be recommendable to book a tour respectively a guide in advance.

 In the afternoon, you can continue exploring the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo at your own pace. Visit the most famous attractions such as Alcázar de Colón, Basilica Cathedral of Santa María la Menor, Calle Las Damas, Fortaleza Ozama or Plaza de España, and soak in the vibe of the Caribbean’s most important historic center.  Once leaving the city you head towards the Cordillera Central, the central mountain range of the Dominican Republic. Peaks here reach up to 10000 feet, which results in a majestic natural backdrop and amazing sceneries.

 You have the choice between Constanza and Jarabacoa, which are the main towns in this area. While Jarabacoa is famous for its outdoor activities, such as rafting, paragliding or ATV adventures, Constanza is the highest city in the Dominican Republic and features a mild climate, much fresher than the tropical heat at the Dominican Republics’ beaches and coastal towns.

 In case you decide on the Dominican Republic 10-day itinerary, you can pass the Cordillera Central and head straight to Punta Rucia (as described on day 5). From Santo Domingo to Punta Rucia it is a 4.5-hour drive, covering a distance of 160 miles.

 On the way to Jarabacoa or Constanza (and also on the way to Punta Rucia), you can make a stop at Saltos de la Jima, one of the many waterfalls in the Dominican Republic. It is located pretty close to the highway (the Autopista Duarte), hence it marks a good stop on your way north.

Optional: Southwest of the Dominican Republic

Instead of heading straight north, you can also start your Dominican Republic itinerary with a road trip to the Southwest. This area is one of the most undeveloped areas in the country and therefore has its particular charme, especially as it features many top natural attractions of the Dominican Republic, such as Bahía de las Águilas , Laguna Oviedo, Bahoruco Cloud Forest, Los Patos, Arroyo Salado, Trudillé and Cabo Rojo.

Barahona is the gateway for this area and it isn’t too complicated to get from Santo Domingo or Punta Cana to Barahona .

If you are a nature lover, you definitely won’t regret traveling to the Southwest of the Dominican Republic, but it is only recommendable if you can add at least 4 extra days to your itinerary from Santo Domingo . I might publish a separate itinerary for the Southwest in the future. Until then, you can check out the following recommendation options in this region. For this area, it is sufficient if you base yourself in 1 or 2 spots and explore all the things to do from there.

Day 4) Exploring the Cordillera Central

Today you have the full selection of different activities in the Cordillera Central. If you decide for Constanza I’d recommend the following things to see, of which most are easily reachable with your rental car : – statue Diviño Niño right next to Constanza with a spectacular view of the city’ – Cascada Aguas Blancas, an impressive waterfall in the Cordillera Central (the road is pretty bad, an SUV is recommendable) – several fruit and vegetable plantations – make sure to try the Caribbean strawberries (you even can pick strawberries on your own at the Ranchito Fresas Ariyama) – the bar and restaurant “La Esquina” with its mountain chalet vibe

Day 5) Cordillera Central – Punta Rucia

Until now this Dominican Republic itinerary had a lack of beaches, but this will change today (and for the upcoming days as well) as you will approach the North Coast of the Dominican Republic. Actually, Punta Rucia is one of my favorite beach towns in the entire Dominican Republic, particularly if you are looking for peace, relaxation and a Caribbean vibe like 20 years ago. There are no big hotels in Punta Rucia, just a lot of guesthouses and a premium resort with around a dozen rooms *.

On the way to Punta Rucia, you can either stop at the 27 Charcos of Damajagua, a pretty cool family activity consisting of hiking, canyoning and water sliding down a canyon, or you head to San José de las Matas, a region completely off-the-beaten-path and usually only known to local tourists. When visiting this area, you can stop at the thermal springs of Aguas Calientes Parque de Agua, the waterfall Salto de Anacaona and the famous D’Leonora Empanadas, a food stall with local delicacies made out of yucca.

Day 6) The best snorkeling in the Dominican Republic

 Your 2-week itinerary for the Dominican Republic not only includes Punta Rucia because it is a nice beach town, but it is also particularly worth visiting because it features the best snorkeling in the Dominican Republic, called Cayo Arena.

 To reach Cayo Arena, you simply take a boat from Punta Rucia to this beautiful sandbar. It not only has a fantastic reef, but it also offers amazing views especially when going there very early in the morning. The boat can be organized by your accommodation in Punta Rucia. Alternatively, you can head to the harbor and just negotiate with a fisherman to bring you there. The whole excursion, including snorkeling time and visiting the mangroves on the way back, usually takes around 2-3 hours.

In the afternoon, you can either relax at the beach or visit the Parque Natural Santuario de Mamíferos Marinos de Estero Hondo, a sanctuary for huge sea mammals, which you can observe there with a bit of luck. It is super close to Punta Rucia, with your rental car you are there in less than 10 minutes.

Day 7) Puerto Plata & the North Coast

Today you are going to leave Punta Rucia, your next stop on the Dominican Republic travel itinerary is Puerto Plata. The 6th biggest city in the Dominican Republic (or the 3rd biggest city if you count Santo Domingo as one city) features a couple of activities that should be on your list of the things to do in the Dominican Republic.

First of all, you should visit the Montaña Isabel de Torres, the most prominent mountain of Puerto Plata. You can drive up there with your car rental , but it is even more beautiful if you take the cable car up there. Views during the ride and from the peak are amazing and with a fee of just 10 USD, it fits nearly every travel budget.

Second, you should visit the historic old town of Puerto Plata, which is the second most beautiful after the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo . Check out the historic streets with their colorful buildings, incl. the market area and the Parque Central.

 For a nice stroll and a beer with an ocean view, I’d recommend the Malecón of Puerto Plata, the oceanfront promenade.

 For the upcoming nights, you can either stay in Cabarete or Puerto Plata. For most individual travelers, Cabarete is more recommendable, as it offers more restaurants, bars and other infrastructure for tourists. It has a pretty cool surfer vibe, but you will also enjoy the town if you are not surfing. Together with Las Terrenas and Punta Rucia, Cabarete is my favorite beach town in the Dominican Republic. Particularly the strip of restaurants and bars with its lounge vibe right at the beach is one of the coolest areas in the entire country. Puerto Plata is the better option if you are looking for an all-inclusive resort for a couple of days ( check here the difference between Punta Canas’ and Puerto Platas’ resorts ) or for one of the few luxury hotels along the north coast.

Day 8 and 9) Explore the ocean and the spectacular North Coast mountain range

 In terms of activities, it hardly is important if you decide to base yourself in Cabarete or Puerto Plata. You can reach all of the following things to do from either place. This area is particularly worth visiting and spending a couple of days at due to its vast array of outdoor activities – unparalleled in the Dominican Republic. Some of these activities include:

• take windsurfing, kitesurfing or (wave) surfing lessons in Cabarete ( check here for a beginner offer *)
• have a walk at the miles-long beaches between Puerto Plata and Cabarete
• take part in the most exciting Canyoning Tour in the entire Caribbean ( check here for details *)
• rappel down a spectacular and otherwise inaccessible waterfall in the Cordillera Ceptentrional ( check here for details *)
• visit Puerto Plata, the rum distillery, the old town and the cable car (in case you haven’t had time the day before) ( check here for details *)
• book a mountainbike tour in Cabarete
• go hiking in the Cordillera Septentrional

 As you can see, there are tons of options in this area and you can fill a full week with this Cabarete and Puerto Plata itinerary. Therefore, if you have more time, feel free to book additional nights than the 3 proposed in this Dominican Republic itinerary for 2 weeks.

Day 10) Road-trip along the North Coast of the Dominican Republic

Today you can continue your journey through the Dominican Republic and explore the fascinating north coast of the country. The road is one of the best ways to enjoy a road trip in the Dominican Republic , as scenery changes between the ocean on the one side and mountains on the other side. Furthermore, plenty of options to stop along the way are giving you the perfect road-trip feeling. Some of the highlights and things to do on the road from Cabarete to Samaná, your next destination in this 2-week Dominican Republic travel itinerary, are (sorted from west to east):

• Playa Magante and Playa Rogelio, a local’s favorite among the beaches in the Dominican Republic with plenty of local bars and food stalls
• Rio San Juan with its iconic Laguna Gri-Gri (which can be explored by boat)
• Playa Caleton, another locals favorite
• Playa Grande, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic

 Sometimes it is difficult to find remote and romantic beach huts in the Dominican Republic to stay a couple of nights, as beaches are either fully developed or absolutely pristine. Day 11-13) Explore the Samaná peninsula

You have reached the last amazing destination of your vacation in the Dominican Republic: Samaná.

You have the choice between staying in Las Terrenas, Las Galeras or El Valle.

Las Terrenas is the main tourist place in Samaná, but it is by far not as touristic as Punta Cana. It offers the perfect mix between touristic infrastructure (beach bars, restaurants, accommodation, etc.), beautiful beaches and authentic local experiences.

Las Galeras is quieter than Las Terrenas and therefore is perfectly recommendable if you prefer peace and relaxation. Las Terrenas and Las Galeras likewise are the perfect getaway to explore the marvelous beaches of the Samaná peninsula .

 El Valle is the adventure destination on the Samaná peninsula. It just features a few eco-lodges, some at the beach, some in the jungle, including the famous Dominican Tree House Village *. El Valle is a perfect getaway for 1 or 2 nights, but for a longer stay, it lacks local options regarding bars, restaurants or shopping opportunities.

 All three destinations are perfect to explore the several attractions of the Samaná peninsula, such as Los Haitises National Park (by boat), whale watching excursions , the several pristine beaches of Samaná and Salto El Limón , one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the Dominican Republic.

Day 14) Head back to the airport area

This day of your Dominican Republic itinerary is kind of optional as it depends on when your flight is leaving. If your flight departs in the morning or until noon from Santo Domingos Las Américas International Airport (2-3 hours away from Samaná) or if you are flying back home from Punta Cana International Airport (a 4 to 5-hour drive from Samaná), you might want to head to the airport area already today, so that you can return your car without any pressure. Especially flights to the United States sometimes leave pretty early, hence staying the night close to the airport might not be the worst idea. On the other hand, if your flight departs late enough, you can easily extend your stay in Samaná by one night.

On the way from Samaná to Santo Domingo , you have a few more options of stopping along the road. Especially Salto Socoa marks a nice road-trip stopover, as it is a beautiful waterfall with swimming opportunities just 10 minutes away from the highway.

 Once arriving in the airport area, you don’t necessarily need to stay right at the airport, even though this is an option if you have a very early morning flight. Alternatively, you can stay in Boca Chica or Juan Dolio, which are the beach towns closest to Santo Domingo. Boca Chica is closest to Las Américas International Airport with a great lagoon to swim and to SUP, Juan Dolio has a wider beach and is better if you are looking for a quieter experience.

 Today marks the end of your road trip through the Dominican Republic . You can return your rental car at the airport and check in for your flight.

 Of course, this Dominican Republic 2-week itinerary is just a proposal with lots of ideas on where to stay and with things to do. Dominican Republic 10-day itinerary

 If you don’t have time for a full 2-week holiday in the Dominican Republic, you can also shorten this travel program into a Dominican Republic 10-day itinerary.  This is easier as it sounds, as the 2-week travel itinerary described above presents some options to cut the one or other day.

 First, you can leave out the Cordillera Central (Constanza or Jarabacoa) on days 3 or 4. Even though the central mountain area of the Dominican Republic is gorgeous, it is the less spectacular option of all the places involved in the Dominican Republic trip plan presented above – at least according to my opinion. Of course, if you are a mountain buff and don’t want to snorkel, you can alternatively leave out Punta Rucia.

 Assuming you decide for skipping the Cordillera Central, which saves you two days, you can head straight from Santo Domingo to Punta Rucia. The stop proposed on the road – Salto de la Jima on day 3 – would still be possible. Also, the area around San José de las Matas is along the same way, even though it will be a bit tough time-wise, considering that you just pick up your car rental in the morning in Santo Domingo.

 A further reduction of 2 days to get a 10-day itinerary for the Dominican Republic can be achieved by reducing the time you stay in Cabarete and Samaná by one night. Even though this option would mean a pretty short stay in both places, it is still possible. Alternatively, if you don’t want to be that rushed, you can also skip the 2 nights in Punta Rucia and therefore have the number of nights left as initially proposed (3 nights Cabarete and 4 nights Samaná).

7-day itinerary for the Dominican Republic

 If even this 10-day Dominican Republic itinerary is too long for you and you only have 1 week in the Dominican Republic, you can further shorten this travel plan to still experience the country super authentically.

However, in this case, I would recommend skipping the days 4 to 9 completely.

 If you are only planning for a 7-day itinerary in the Dominican Republic, you would take over your rental car as described on day 3, but then head straight to the north coast. My special recommendation would be to stay the night at Playa Magante, a local’s beach with romantic and rustic beach huts right at the ocean *.

 Day 4 in a Dominican Republic travel itinerary for 1 week would be the same as Day 10 in a 2-week road-trip itinerary. Day 5 to 7 would also be the same as days 11 to 13 in the longer travel itinerary above.

 If you indeed only have 7 days available, you would need to head back to the airport area in the afternoon of day 6 or the morning of day 7, depending on when your flight is starting. If you have 1 week in the Dominican Republic, you can enjoy the full amount of time in Samaná and head back to the Santo Domingo area as described in the 2-week itinerary.

 With these changes, you can still experience some of the most amazing things to do in the Dominican Republic within your 7-day itinerary.

How much approximatey does the boat cost from Punta Rucia to Cayo Arena? The cheapest version arranged by the hotel or by the local fisherman, no tours!?

Hi Barbara, usually, if you catch a boat from Punta Rucia to Cayo Arena with the local fishermen it shall cost around 3000 to 4000 Dominican Pesos. However, I can imagine that they charge a bit more now due to enormous increase in fuel prices. Cheers from Punta Cana Chris

You may also see toddlers in the street on their own or with their elder siblings.

9 Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana

W ith over 1,000 miles of coastline and some of the prettiest beaches in North America, the Dominican Republic is a popular beach destination. With convenient flights from the U.S. and Canada, Punta Cana is one of the most popular areas in the Dominican Republic. Most travelers head to an all-inclusive resorts during their trip to DR, making for an easy beachy getaway. However, there are several things to keep in mind. Here are the top things to know before visiting Punta Cana.

• Punta Cana International Airport PUJ is one of the largest airports in the Caribbean with service in-between 26 international destinations.
• Cabs can be expensive so arrange for a transfer before arriving
• Spanish isn’t necessary, though it’s nice to use some common phases.
• Changing money isn’t necessary however cash for tips is necessary.
• There are several resort areas in Punta Cana, like Bavaro, Cap Cana and La Romana.
• DR boasts 200 Beaches
• Nude Sunbathing Isn’t a Thing in DR
• The Dominican Republic features a National Park, perfect for an all-day excursion.
• Bottled Water is a Must in DR

How to Get to the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is the second-largest island in the Caribbean. It offers several international airports. After several trip to DR over the years, I am sharing the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

The Punta Cana International Airport

With service from several international carriers, including direct flights from Britain, France and South America. U.S. travelers will find American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines.

WiFi is available, and restrooms are located near the immigration line.

A valid passport with more than six months before expiration is required for your trip is required. e aren’t required to enter the country. A 30-day tourist visa will be stamped into your passport upon entry. The Dominican Republic Entry fee is included in your flight.

The Dominican Republic requires U.S. Passengers to fill out an online Immigration form before they arrive. Before my last trip in December 2023, my airline sent me a link (Delta Airlines).

On departure, U.S. residents can opt for the automated immigration lines. You will just scan your passport and pass through a gate.

The Punta Cana Airport features enhanced security measures with pat-downs. A TSA pre-check line isn’t available.

The departure area is fully air-conditioned and features a duty-free shop and another shop specializing in Dominican Republic products, like rum and cigars.

Find American fast food in the departures area, like Wendy’s, Sbarro, Nathan’s, Cinnabon and Baskin-Robbins. Also find a bar for pre-departure cocktails.

Find a small play structure for younger kids. The Punta Cana International Airport also features a nursing room.

Other International Airports in The Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo International Airport (SDQ) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

Santiago International Airport (STI) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines and Jet Blue Airlines.

Airport transfers.

When leaving the arrivals hall at the Punta Cana International Airport, a line of cab drivers will greet you. I recommend arranging transportation with your resort or hotel before arriving. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

There are several transportation and tour counters in the area. I usually check in with my transportation company to find my driver. Often they are waiting a short distance from the airport and pull up after you arrive.

Most cars in the Dominican Republic are air-conditioned.

What Language is Used in the Dominican Republic

The Dominicans speak Spanish though most understand and speak some English. Knowing some basic Spanish is helpful, especially the basics.

Hola = Hello

Buenos Días = Good Morning

Buenos Noches = Good Night

Muchas Gracias = Thank you very much

What Money is  Used in the Dominican Republic

The official currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso (RD$). Though the U.S. Dollar is widely accepted. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Change will most likely be given in U.S. dollars. For those who want local currency, ATMs are located in hotel lobbies as well as the airport.

Credit Cards are widely accepted throughout the Dominican Republic. It’s advised to use a credit card for large purchases like lodging. Though use cash for souvenirs and small purchases. Tips are accepted and appreciated in DR from spa services to daily maid service.

Phone Service in the Dominican Republic

Since I travel internationally, I have a global plan through my U.S. carrier. When I land I just switch over to the local service provider. I just use my data to check email and messages. The provider I used throughout my trip to DR was Altice.

Most all-inclusive resorts offer extensive WiFi for their guests. Most of the time this service is included. This is one of the top things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Where to Stay in Punta Cana

Most resorts in the Punta Cana area are all-inclusive resorts. Travelers will find everything from luxurious and laid-back adult all-inclusives to family resorts with waterparks.

Some resorts are divided into an adults-only side with an adjoining family side, each with separate restaurants, pools and gathering places. Other resorts offer buildings dedicated to adults or families.

With several different resort areas in Punta Cana, visitors will choose from laid-back La Romana to buzzy Bavaro. Cap Cana boasts Juanilla Beach, one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean.

Near Punta Cana, Cap Cana boasts wide white sand beaches with lots of palm trees. A resort community, Cap Cana features the Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana and the Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana. Both of these properties opened in 2021 and offer a luxurious all-inclusive resort experience.

Nearby is Sanctuary Cap Cana, another luxury all-inclusive resort. Located on Juanillo Beach, it offers pristine white sand with mature palm trees.

Cap Cana is located just south of the Punta Cana International Airport. The Cap Cana Marina offers boat excursions. This area is ideal for watersports like kayaking, SUP boarding and sailing.

La Romana offers a quieter resort experience. It’s located west of the Punta Cana International Airport and along the Chavón River.

I stayed at the Hilton La Romana, an all-inclusive resort with tropical landscaping. It is close to Bayahibe, a resort town with shopping and dining. It is also the departure point for boat excursions to Isla Saona, part of the Parque National Cotubanama.

Bavaro features the largest concentration of all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic. It’s north of the Punta Cana International Airport and on the Atlantic Ocean.

Along this strip of beach, often called the Coconut Coast, resorts are shoulder-to-shoulder. The white sand beaches are the draw though some resorts offer bigger beaches than others so research is key.

Bavaro is quite busy. The resorts tend to be louder and the beaches busier.

Best Beaches in Punta Cana

With about 200 beaches in the Dominican Republic, it can be hard to choose. DR boasts 25 Blue Flag Beaches (more than the U.S.), known for their conservation and recycling efforts.

Macao Beach –Known for its surfing area.

Bavaro Beach –This beach extends for 30 miles and features many all-inclusive resorts. It is a favorite.

Juanillo Beach- -Exceptionally wide beach with mature palm trees. Since there are fewer resorts and many are gated, this beach is less crowded.

Bayahibe Beach –Located in the village and a frequent departure point for excursions to Soana Island.

Note : Nude sunbathing isn’t a common in the Dominican Republic. Even topless sunbathing isn’t a thing in DR. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Saona Island

Part of the Cotubanama National Park, Saona Island is a pristine tropical escape. With a lack of development, including hotels, it is an ideal day trip.

Christopher Columbus discovered the island and named it after a friend. It was the location for the Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

The easiest way to reach the island is via a catamaran tour. Most trips stop at Palmilla Swimming Area, a shallow area that adults can touch the bottom in the turquoise water.

Most trips depart from Bayahibe and take 8 to 10 hours. Lunch and drinks are usually included in the tour.

Is the Water Safe in the Dominican Republic

While visiting the Dominican Republic, drink bottled water. The tap water is NOT safe to drink. So drink bottled water exclusively during your visit. I even brush my teeth with bottled water or mouthwash. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stay away from the following:

• Tap or well water
• Ice made with tap or well water
• Drinks made with tap or well water (such as reconstituted juice)
• Unpasteurized milk

Complimentary bottled water should be available in your room during your entire stay. Water fountains are not the norm in the Dominican Republic.

What to Wear in the Caribbean

Beach Packing List 

Liquor safety.

Practice some basic precautions during your stay. The drinking age in the Dominican Republic is 18.

• Make sure all bottled beverages are sealed with their factory seals in your mini fridge.
• Don’t drink from open liquor bottles in your room.
• Watch bartenders make your beverages.
• Before drinking, smell your cocktail.
• Drink slowly.
• Eat before and while you are drinking.
• Drink bottled water while drinking alcohol.

Food Safety

According to the CDC, stay away from the following:

• Food served at room temperature
• Food from street vendors
• Raw or soft-cooked (runny) eggs
• Raw or undercooked (rare) meat or fish
• Unwashed or unpeeled raw fruits and vegetables
• Unpasteurized dairy products
• ”Bushmeat” (monkeys, bats, or other wild game)

Insect Safety in DR

According to the CDC, protect yourself by doing the following:

• Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
• Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
• Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on your skin.
• Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
• Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

Make an Appointment at Travel Clinic

I headed to CDC.gov for Caribbean travel information, including required immunizations. My family practitioner advised me to make an appointment at a travel clinic.

At the travel clinic, my nurse practitioner advised a Typhoid vaccine, along with Hepatitis A and a booster vaccine for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis since it had been five years since my last shot. I was covered for the MMR vaccine, or measles, mumps and rubella.

The nurse practitioner also discussed mosquito safety since dengue fever is sometimes an issue for the Caribbean. I packed a 3 oz. container of insect repellant and used it when I walked through a shady area and in the evenings.

Along with vaccines, she discussed traveler’s diarrhea (TD). She advised I start taking probiotics before and during my trip. I also drank a dose of Emergen-C daily, especially after long international flights. I packed some over-the-counter medications for TD symptoms since it’s the most common illness during travel.

Fear of TD–Traveler’s Diarrhea

I have a fear of TD. Who has time for that? I didn’t want to find a Dominican pharmacy, so I packed all the supplies I might need. Here’s what the CDC recommends.

• Antiacid—like Tums
• Pepto-Bismol tablets
• Imodium tablets
• Oral Rehydration Salts—available at REI
• Prescription Antibiotics—prescribed by a doctor or nurse practitioner based on your itinerary.

If you get seasickness, here are the top tips and products to reduce the effects .

First Aid Supplies

Accidents happen so pack a basic first aid kit to be prepared, even for minor scrapes and blisters.

• Pain Reliever
• Motion Sickness pills, like non-drowsy Dramamine
• Cough Drops
• Cold Medication—I prefer a separate Day and Night version.
• Anti-Histamine—like Benadryl
• Triple antibiotic cream—like Neosporin
• Anti-Itch Cream
• Anti-septic wipes
• Inspect Repellent

Restroom Supplies

When traveling away from resorts, pack some restroom supplies. You will need them outside restaurants and hotels.

• Toilet paper, off the roll in a plastic bag
• Hand sanitizer
• Bleach wipes

DO NOT USE shuttle central

DO NOT USE shuttle central. Had a confirmation for picked up from resort to airport, driver never show up and never call to let us know if will be late. Wait and wait still no show, call customer service. "Oh the driver at the gate and can't get it", at that ime we already had to called for another taxi to the airport. Again, DO NOT USE them!!!

We booked Shuttle Central for our return shuttle to the airport. We hadn’t received prior communication so when we got to the lobby early we texted the number provided that we were ready to go - no reply. When our scheduled time arrived with still no communication, I called the support number and they said they would contact our driver and give us a call back soon with an update - she never called us back. After waiting 10 more minutes, we called the # again to ask for an update - the person said they would call our driver and then call us back in 5 minutes. We said we had already gone through this process and never got a call back so we asked if they could send another driver - they let us know they needed to call our driver and then would call us back in 5 minutes - they never returned our call. After waiting ANOTHER 10 minutes I called the support # again and waited on hold (now almost 25 minutes after the scheduled pick up time), they said the driver was at the main entrance and wasn’t being let in. The hotel staff took us to the main entrance and we looked everywhere for our driver based on the vehicle description provided - there were no vehicles anywhere in the area. I asked the Shuttle Central agent on the phone if he could connect me with the driver so that we could find out his location and arrange a spot to meet - the agent said that he would connect us and that the driver would call us soon. The driver NEVER called us. Now running 35 minutes late, we had no other options but to take an expensive taxi to make our flight. This experience caused immense stress and an unnecessary expensive taxi fee. Our support agent said to get a receipt from the taxi receipt and that we would be reimbursed for the taxi expense due to their error but after submitting the receipt, they said that we would not be reimbursed because it was a “miscommunication.” I would not recommend Shuttle Central to anyone - they’re unreliable and dishonest.

SUPER UNRELIABLE!! We went to Punta Cana as a Bachelor and Bachelorette party from March 21-27. Guys and Girls stayed in 2 different resorts. We purchased this Shutte service for both groups, since it 2 different resorts. The shuttle from airport to resort was fine, no issues there. This shuttle service is also a tour company, so the person that met with us at the airport said he is calling our shuttle and it will arrive in 10 minutes. In the meantime, he showed us all the tours/excursions they offered - which is fine. We declined and both the guys and girls got to our resorts without any problems. However, near the end of the trip, the girls reached out to them to book transportation to a restaurant and they told them its $50 USD (25 each way) which was fine. The girls agreed and told them the location they would need to be at, and agreed on a pickup time. On the day of, the girls confirmed with them again. The shuttle didnt show up at the time agreed on and the girls tried contacting them about it after 15 mins passed. They said someone will be there in another 15 minutes and the girls just cancelled and took an Uber instead. Very unreliable. Now with my experience, for our shuttle back to the airport. They have a reminder to confirm the pickup at the hotel...which you cannot adjust the time or make any modifications. So I messaged the rep the day before my flight at 11am to tell them to please change the pickup time from 16:07 to 17:30 as our flight was a little delayed. He told me to send the voucher I purchased, which I did (I deleted the pic from the chat - see my chat convo). He didnt respond after that, so i messaged again later and he didnt respond til 2:00AM saying my pickup time is 16:07. When i woke up on the day of my flight, I messaged him asking to have it changed and he said no changes 24 hours before. I told him THATS RIDICULOUS because I messaged him YESTERDAY @ 11am and he didnt respond. He said he sent the info to the office but now he said they can't change anything. Such poor customer service!!! so they came at 16:07 and I had to sit at the airport and wait because they can't honour their own mistakes. Now for the girls, they had a different rep for their shuttle. So their pickup time that couldnt be modified on the confirmation they sent, was for 16:30. The girls also messaged the day before the flight and asked if it could be changed to 17:30, the rep said sure 17:30 is okay. So on the day of the flight, they were sitting at the beach, but needed something from the lobby. They were in their bathing suits and walked to the lobby and found out that their driver was already there waiting for them and it was 16:10!!!! Luckily they pleaded with the driver to stay for 20 minutes so they can run back to their hotel room and grab their suitcases! The driver was nice and agreed after some pleading. So the girls got driven to the airport in their bathing suits and had to change at the airport. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE with this SHUTTLE CENTRAL!! Save yourselves the headaches and trouble and book with someone else!!!

Do not go with shuttle central punta cana. Stay away. Scam. Scam. Scam. We booked our trip as I always do with Expedia for TD. This shuttle was part of the package I booked. They emailed to verify pick up- and it seemed like a legit company. Upon arrival at airport I was greeted at kiosk desk with my name. Then had to spend over an hour at the airport being hammered on purchasing an excursion before they would take me to my hotel Which we begrudgingly did just to get out of there The guy told us to use what’s app to communicate directly with him as he was our personal assistant through shuttle central Excursion day- this private tour was not private. The dude driving us dropped us off at a bus where we spent 4 hours of driving picking up other individuals Cue returning home. We messaged 48 hours before our flight on what’s app to inform when we would like to be picked up. An agreement came that 445 pm would work. We found out our flight was delayed. Followed up immediately asking to get picked up an hour later if possible. No response. We attended the lobby of our hotel for 445. No driver. Waited until 5pm he still wasn’t there. We then needed to book a taxi. Presently following up with shuttle central who are doing nothing. Refused to give us a refun because they claimed we no showed. Don’t refund for part of the excursion either. I’m now going above to TD for Expedia with a complaint to get shuttle central taken off their provider list, and will be again asking for a refund. Not happy!

The service of Shuttle Central is terrible. We were suppose to leave to the airport at 6:30 and no one was around. I tried to contact my representative and no one was getting back to me. I paid the service ahead of time and no one was answering me. It came to 7:30 and the bellhop got me a taxi since my flight was leaving at 9:15. They never answered me through out the process. Around 8:30 pm when I was pass security the first contact from shuttle service was given. The representative mentioned that they would reinburse me since it was there error. Which would have been fine. It’s been 3 weeks and I’m still waiting for the reimbursement. The customer service is terrible. I understand errors happen but you try to fix them. It has been a terrible experience and I would not consider to go ahead with this transportation service. Very unprofessional.

Our flight was delayed which meant we would not make our pick up time. We were in contact with the driver who replied 'see you tonight'. When we arrived driver was no where to be found and would not answer messages. On the return trip the driver came to the resort but refused to come through the security gate so we were forced to take our luggage all the way out to him. Just be aware that if there is any delay to your flight you're out of luck and there is no refund. Would not use again.

Transportation | avelo airlines to test miami-to-orlando route for $46 one-way — faster and mostly cheaper than brightline.

This is only a test. But could it be long before airlines start competing with Brightline’s high-speed rail service with high-volume discount flights between Central and South Florida?

Up-and-coming discounter Avelo Airlines announced Wednesday it is taking a flier on the high-volume Miami-Orlando travel market with “seasonal” Boeing 737-800 flights on Fridays and Sundays, between June 7 and Aug. 18.

Avelo’s first-day one-way fares: $46 for a one-hour, five-minute flight.

The Brightline SMART fares posted for June 7: $39 to $89 for its three-hour, 30-minute train rides, depending on the time of day during the course of the railroad’s 16-train schedule.

Based in Houston, Avelo previously operated charters before becoming a regularly scheduled carrier in 2021. It serves 52 U.S. destinations in 23 states and Puerto Rico. The airline operates at 10 Florida airports, including South Florida’s three international airports in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Miami.

Courtney Goff, the Avelo communications manager, said the cheap fare idea arose because the airline is operating charters between Miami and Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic , and is moving an Orlando-based plane to Miami to cover those flights starting June 8.

Low-fare experiment

“We thought, ‘Maybe those in Central Florida want a quick, affordable trip to Miami for the weekend,'” she said. “We’re also the only low-fare carrier on this route.”

“If you look at our flight dates and times compared to theirs, we are almost $100 less and have a shorter travel time,” Goff added.

About 20% of the plane’s 160 or so seats will go for $46. But the other seats will be priced slightly higher as the airline is keeping all of its fares at low levels, she said.

In a monthly financial report covering March, Brightline said demand is on the rise for its 235-mile rail service between Miami and Orlando, which has station stops at Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and West Palm Beach. That’s despite a rise in the average fare per passenger to $57.96 from $26.23 in March 2023.

Although Avelo is unlikely to see the passenger volumes enjoyed by Brightline, the airline believes the Orlando-Miami route is worth testing as a bargain proposition.

“While this is only scheduled for summer due to the charters, it is similarly a test to see if the demand is fully there,” Goff said. “Having a base of operations in Orlando makes it easier to try out new options for travel and see what resonates with travelers.”
