Escorted tours: what you need to know

Whether you’re short of time, have never driven abroad or just want the company, escorted tours can be a stress-free option for getting away from it all

By Claudia Dowell Published: June 7, 2017

Ask any motorcaravanner what they love about our pastime and they will doubtless cite “freedom to explore” as one of the major reasons for motorhome ownership.

So why even contemplate an escorted tour? There are several reasons for their popularity.

Camaraderie for one: it’s an opportunity to form friendships and share experiences with like-minded people.

For those new to the pastime, it removes some of the anxiety of driving abroad and there’s the reassurance that you can call on someone to help should something go amiss.

For others, it’s about leaving the planning to those with more experience of the area, and having a guaranteed pitch; you get to see the best of a place, without spending hours poring over maps and researching sites.

What are the options on escorted tours?

Of course, motorcaravanners are an adventurous lot: some of the more popular escorted tours are very far away.

New Zealand, with its spectacular scenery and English-speaking people, is a place that many have as their bucket-list motorhome holiday destination.

It’s worth remembering, however, that these far-flung trips usually require a minimum number of people to book before they go ahead.

We’ve spoken to several operators bent on expanding the experiences of British visitors, to give you a flavour of what’s out there.

Each provides a pack with maps, GPS co-ordinates, site addresses, ideas about what to see en route and essential tips about driving in that specific country.

While their offers may differ slightly, built into all programmes is the freedom to explore – an important consideration, because it’s your holiday after all!

Caravan and Motorhome Club

  • Call: 01342 316 101
  • Go online

The former Caravan Club’s rebrand is designed to encourage motorcaravanner membership, and its Worldwide Tours should certainly add to the appeal.

You can sample an escorted trip to New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the US – and if you want to extend your holiday beyond the tour, you can. The Club will look after flights, hotels and excursions, in effect acting as your travel agent.

The Club’s 32-day escorted tour to New Zealand includes two nights in Christchurch and Auckland, starting on the North or South Island, and 27 days’ motorhome hire .

The Club organises all flights, ferries, hotel stays, motorhome hire and premium insurance with unlimited mileage, plus a full tank of fuel, a sat-nav unit with Wi-Fi hotspot and pre-booked campsites all with electric hook-up.

Meanwhile, if enough people are interested, the tour guide can organise ad hoc boat trips and vineyard tours on a pay-as-you-go basis. The tour cost is £6000 per person, but you should also budget for fuel, food and attractions.

“Our Slovenia /Croatia tour has sold out twice over,” says Alex Hayes, who looks after the Club’s European escorted tours. “We’ve had to run two dates.”

These tours are open to both caravanners and motorcaravanners, and have a programme and social side more akin to rallies. Members make their own way to the start of the tour, so ferries are not included – and neither is the Club’s Red Pennant insurance.

As well as Slovenia/Croatia, destinations include Rome and Sorrento; Venice and the Islands; Spain ’s Costa del Azahar; the Algarve and Andalucía; Switzerland; Austria ; The Netherlands ; and several French excursions.

For first-timers who have never driven in France there are two tours, Normandy and Picardy. Both start in the UK and include a course for driving on the Continent and dealing with the tolls, so you are prepared before you board the ferry.

Camping and Caravanning Club

  • Call: 02477 670 638

“Participants will have to not mind communal bathing,” says the C&CC’s Lisa Addleton of the Club’s escorted tour to Japan. “The facilities – or onsen – are single-sex and bathers enter naked, and many campsites offer these rather than showers.”

Don’t think you’ll be using your motorhome’s shower, either: none of the hire vehicles have them. In fact, of the two types of ’van on offer – a campervan and compact motorhome – only the motorhome has a toilet.

This tour is designed for the more experienced motorcaravanner and it’s sold out for this year, with only one place left for 2018 as we went to press.

The Japanese, it seems, are keen campers and have aire-type stopovers called ‘michi no eki’, which have toilets, shops and a restaurant.

The pace is relaxed; Japan’s speed limits are low, so you’ll be tootling along at a sedate 30-37mph on the left-hand side of the road through gorgeous scenery.

The Club also offers tours to New Zealand, Australia, the USA and Canada, with especially challenging tours to Argentina and South Africa, where running water at campsites is not guaranteed, motorhomes are the best available and roads can be dirt tracks – so the ability to change a wheel is highly desirable!

All tours are designed to give a flavour of the countries and their people, and a sense of adventure. And when the tour is over, the Club can act as a travel agent to help you extend your stay.

Closer to home, the Club’s European Escorted Tours offer 19 destinations, including the Faroe Islands and Iceland, and Morocco. Some are suitable for first-timers, and most include some excursions and meals, which make them more like rallies than the worldwide offerings.

Tours do not include ferry crossings or personal insurance, which must be organised either independently or with the Club – plus it can arrange sites en route and motorhome hire if you don’t want to take your own vehicle, or are travelling with friends who don’t own one.

The brochure lists tour-only mileage, mobility ratings, and whether or not the tours are suitable for taking pets.

MandA Tours

  • Call: 0049 6081 9191212/0049 170 355 1765

MandA Tours likes to keep its groups small, with a maximum of 12 ’vans, and because its tours are for motorhomes only, it allows more flexibility in where you stay.

It may be a vineyard or a lake shore, so you need to be self-sufficient for one or two nights, although hook-up is usually available.

MandA can also cater for large motorhomes – up to 10m long, 3.5m high and 7.5 tons – and ensures that facilities are available for discharging fixed waste tanks.

The firm likes to focus on a small region to keep mileage and fuel costs low. Tours for 2017 include Provence; Germany’s Rhine and Moselle Rivers; the Black Forest; and the Romantic Road.

A welcome dinner is included in the price, and for those lasting 10 days to two weeks there will be one or two highlights, such as a river cruise or wine tasting.

These escorted tours will always run, even if they are not fully booked, and early-bird bookings receive a discount.

The guides have lived in France, Spain, Germany and the UK and can speak the languages – useful if you get into trouble.

GB Motorhome Tours

  • Call: 07481 479 057

At GB Motorhome Tours, the trips are researched, arranged and escorted by its team of ‘tour directors’.

A tour can start in or near the destination country or, for those new to travelling abroad, there’s the option to start in the UK with the tour directors.

This package includes a fully flexible return cross-Channel ferry ticket, plus additional campsite nights from the UK to the start of the tour, and the services of the tour directors travelling with the group. Group sizes range from seven to 15 units, and often include single travellers.

Tours range from one week to three months in duration, and its programme for 2018 includes the Canary Islands; the Côte d’Azur; Germany’s wine rivers, the Rhine and Mosel; Denmark; Ireland ; France’s Atlantic coastline; Poland; the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary; Croatia; and Sicily.

“Our tour directors travel in their own motorhome, and are on hand throughout to oversee smooth running and provide assistance,” says GBMT director Kevin Griffiths.

“We use sites close to attractions and incorporate excursions with all transport, a local guide and entrance fees, plus include a number of group meals. We often include a night at venues not available on an individual basis, such as wineries where we have tastings followed by dinner and overnight parking.”

Crossings Motorhome Tours

  • Call: 01522 861 715/07545 611 327

Bob and Wendy Reeves spent two years full-timing in a motorhome, and during that time they covered thousands of miles – from the Arctic Circle to the costas of Spain – discovering the best that Europe has to offer.

They now offer tours that cover France, Belgium , Holland, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Italy, Croatia and Slovenia.

All start in the UK and include flexible return ferries. The group sizes are small, typically between six and 10 ’vans, or 12 at the most.

These escorted tours are aimed at both first-timers and the more experienced, and durations are between 14 and 25 days.

“It gives newcomers reassurance that there is someone there to guide them through any problems,” says Bob, “and people really like the camaraderie. Two-thirds of our clients rebook.”

Crossings has a three-countries tour designed specially for less-experienced motorcaravanners. It visits France, Belgium and Holland over 14 days, but still keeps the mileage low.

The tours are launched in July the previous year, and most bookings are made from October through to December – early birds get a discount.

Excursions are not bundled into the price, but are booked on demand and are pay-as-you-go.

The Reeves accompany all of their tours and, if their testimonials are anything to go by, it’s that personal touch which makes them special.

What will it cost?

Charges depend on the location and length of tour, but don’t forget to budget for fuel, food and insurance.

The C&MC’s European escorted tours start at £589 (two people plus unit) for a four-day Paris city break, while its 32-day New Zealand tour is £5999 per person.

The C&CC’s nine-day tour of Holland costs £860 (unit+2), rising to £4265pp for its 20-day tour of Japan.

Crossings charges £2300 (unit+2) for a 25-day Swedish break, while GB Motorhome Tours’ 70-night Canary Islands extravaganza costs from £2749pp. MandA charges £1150 (unit+2) for a 15-day tour of Germany.

While their offers may differ slightly, built into all programmes is the freedom to explore

We have looked at Crossings tours but are favoring the C&CC tours as they seem to also include organised trips to nearby visitor attractions, which are very useful when in a motorhome

I can see it being attractive to newbies as you have the security of the guides, we've a couple of trips under our belt so maybe we just have to do more research and try and be more organised next time! The thought of an organised tour horrifies me! It's half the fun for us not knowing where we're going - we make decisions on a day to day basis so sometimes we end up zigzagging around France or Germany. The only organisation we do is book the tunnel! Denise

We have booked their Rhine and Moselle tour for next May. We have driven in France quite a bit but never Germany. We thought we would try it and see what we thought, the ferry tickets are flexible so we will add a week or two in France at the end. The owner Wendy phoned us to double check that we were still happy to go despite the fact that she and her husband were not leading this one. It might not be our cup of tea but we will only know if we try it. We didn't think rallies would suit us but we have thoroughly enjoyed them.

Difficult thing to predict what the mix will be like. We've had loads of holidays with friends, sometimes with surprising results especially when loads of kids are involved. Just dipping our toe into adult only hols. You find out a lot more about people when you're travelling together. Brave @carolyn please report back and let us know how you get on?

She did tell me but I have to admit I can't remember their names. The chap was stationed there for 15 years as a Major so I think it should be well organized! Wendy and her husband are still doing most of them but need to expand a bit.

Wagonmaster

Most RV caravans have a Wagonmaster who heads out first ensuring all reservations for RV Parks or excursions are ready for their customers when they arrive.  The RV owners are given advice as to what direction, the best route, sights to see along the way and given a suggested arrival time at that days destination.

Following the group is a tail gunner who follows along to ensure anyone with any difficulty whether it is regarding breakdowns or accidents are given the services they need to continue with the tour.  The tail gunner is most often an experienced mechanic or Rver with tools and skills to assist as much as possible.  This ensures no one in the group is left sitting along a highway with a breakdown and not able to communicate their need to the group.

Price Includes

Of course each RV caravan tour company is different but for the most part RV Park fees and reservations are included in the tour price.  Some other features usually included are:

  • Trip logs (maps)
  • Services of Wagonmaster and Tailgunner
  • Emergency medical assistance insurance
  • Fees for border crossings and visas
  • Side excursions (pre-arranged)
  • Organized social hours at the end of each day
  • Trip preparation packet and check list

They do NOT include the cost of the RV if you are renting one, fuel, food and personal expenses.  When booking your trip ask questions and be sure you know exactly what you are getting for your money.

Although we have not utilized the services of the following companies my research has indicated that they are reputable and reliable.  Do your own research also and see if they offer what you may be looking for.

how or where do I get information on renting a motorhome for a trial run for retirement and join a caravan for an initial experience

Hi Joel, Thanks for your inquiry – here’s a link to a few articles I’ve written on renting an RV. I hope you find them helpful. If not, please email me again with specifics and I’ll do my best to help you. Renting an RV Carol Ann

We are planning to travel to New Zealand to rent motorhomes with another couple in March 2016. Tracks to Adventure no longer seems to exist as a separate entity and that leaves only Fantasy, however their tour includes Australia, not a problem for us but our friends have not shown any interest in that part.

Are you aware of any NZ only caravan packages offered there that we might look into. Web search is daunting as there are so many offers that it is confusing. As an alternative we might consider just doing it the way we travel the US – on our own.

Hi Paul, Nice to hear from you. I am not aware of specific caravan companies in NZ but will see what I can come up with. Maybe one of our readers may be able to help us. Will let you know if I find anything.

crossings motorhome tours reviews

Paul, my husband and I rented RV’s in New Zealand for 6 weeks and traveled both islands on our own. Even though we had never experienced a motorhome before, we found it very delightful. The people there are so very friendly and helpful, and we felt very safe. I had written an extensive blog on the journey if you care to read it http://www.TravelTalesOfNormAndAlison.com Click the Tab on New Zealand 2009, then Click on the down arrows on the right, and read the blog from the bottom up. ( The blog is posted most recent entries on top ). Don’t be afraid to do this on your own.

Are you still traveling? If you are interested in writing a post about your travels I may post it on my blog with a link within your bio to your own blog. If interested let me know. Thank you.

We are planning 2 longer (54 days & 82 day)Mexican caravans this season (2014/2015), both will include Copper Canyon & the Monarch Butterfly preserve. Itinerary is at http://www.mexicorvbuddies.com/itinerary.php

Thanks for the information Paul, I would be interested in learning more about your tours – why don’t you put together something telling us about Mexico and we can share it with those readers who are interested in learning more. To everyone, I have not participated or have any affiliation with this tour group but am willing to learn more. Anyone else?

crossings motorhome tours reviews

First of all, Baja & Back is now out of business. Barry Monkman tragically died of a heart attack, & his wife, Vonda, decided not to carry on.

This spring a new company is doing a 71 day tour of Mexico’s west coast as far as Puerto Vallarta. It includes tours of Copper Canyon & much more. Starts Jan 12, 2013. See http://www.mexicorvbuddies.com . The caravan will be escorted by The Green Angels and led by an experienced Wagon Master couple. Since this is the first trip for this company (They have organized caravans in Quebec for 25 years), the price is only $3350 per rig, about 1/2 the cost of other competitors.

Thanks for the update Paul. I knew that Barry had passed away and am really sorry for his wife and family. I will remove their link from my list since Vonda has decided not to continue with the business.

Thanks for the link to your site – I have no problem sharing it with my readers. Good luck with it and please keep in touch and let us know how it is doing.

Yes it was a shock, Vonda & I grew up in the same small town in northern BC (Smithers) and I knew both of them well.

Sorry I missed read your article and thought you offered catalogues.

Have you ever visited eastern Canada in the Atlantic Provinces in particular Nova Scotia.

I know the folks at Adventure Caravan-Ron and Juanita Khon-the owners. They do a beautiful job of advertising the Atlantic Provinces with their tours.

Everyone in this area of Canada are always welcoming to those folks and any others that visit.

In this area in particular there is a new campground coming to life -Parkville Campground,Noel, Nova Scotia-with very enthusiastic young owners.I am trying to spread the word and be of any assisstance that is possible.

Appreciate your response. Have been traveling the loop this summer and are gathering a lot of good information for the benefit of the RVers joining our caravans. Have signed up to follow your tweets and will continue to follow the website as you provide insightful information.

We are a new RV company. This summer we are traveling our proposed route, lining up campgrounds, activities and adventures. In other words, putting together our package. As our website says, we will be covering a specific route in the southern Colorado Rockies and are only interested in small caravans so more personal attention. We will be offering our tours starting in May 2012 and hope to run 5 tours a season.

Think you sum up RV caravan touring perfectly. These are the things we hope our customers realize are important. Can you offer any ideas for marketing or any general suggestions?

Thanks Sheryl, I visited your site and your caravans definitely sound interesting. I like the idea of smaller caravans for some because of the personal attention and there are people who are more comfortable in a smaller group. Good luck with your new company – I look forward to hearing from you again. Please feel free to sign up for new updates on my blog – I try and update it often and will be putting out a newsletter in the near future.
