We had a wonderful trip in Indonesia and we would like to thank Agate Travel and specially Mrs Emily Xin for arranging this high-quality itinerary. The days spent in Bali, Java and Komodo National Park are already part of our dearest travel memories. Bali is a paradise, Borobudur is a marvel and navigating the semi-phinisi boat around the Komodo National Park was a pleasure. Our visit was perfect to every small detail and we were really pleased with the high standart services offered by Agate Travel. Mrs Emily Xin is highly professional and her support and care with our trip was highly appreciated. She took care with very small detail and really did everything in her power to make sure we had an unforgettable stay in this corner of paradise.

Superb Java Bali Tours: Private Tour

The itinerary was great and covered most of the worth doing sight seeing I would have preferred to have included the Merapi tour which we managed to do because of our guide who pointed it out to us. I didn’t enjoy the Ijen experience. I did not know what to expect and it was my worst experience of being frozen due to inadequate clothing( something the tourists need to be warned about) and also the exaggeration of the blue light. It was nothing like the photos and quite a dangerous expedition to walk up and then down into the crater in the dark. Again advice should be given to carry torches for people who are keen to go. I did take the chair which cost me quite a lot but well deserved by the people who took me up but a complete waste of time and money. The Jiwa Jawa hotel in Mount Bromo unfortunately was not the greatest. The bathroom was tiny and I could barely squeeze in (I am only a size 12 London size) so you can imagine the discomfort for someone larger. The bathroom had a bad smell and the room was very basic. The surroundings were nice and facilities adequate I would re think about accommodation in that hotel unless there are better rooms. Every thing else about the trip was great and thoroughly enjoyed. As far as including meals are concerned I would hold back as the allowance was not even enough to cover my meal and I have quite a small appetite. The fare was basic with a main meal and dessert .

In addition to DPO, the airline utilizes One Engine Taxi, where only one engine is operated during the taxi phase, and Idle Reverse Landing, which involves using idle engine thrust upon landing.
  • After landing at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), passengers from Jakarta can conveniently travel to other cities near the airport by bus, taxi, rental car, private car, and domestic flights. Mataram, Jember, Malang, Surabaya, Kediri, Surakarta, Yogyakarta, and Semarang are Indonesian cities located within different distances from the airport.

Would be better if kayak could track this flight. No update and tracke for the gate in kayak for this flight

Due to very heavy rain in Jakarta which caused bad floods on the highways the captain kindly delayed the departure to allow many passengers to reach the plane with almost 2 hours delay. Otherwise the flight was smooth and uneventful. I was disappointed that given the long delays the passengers were not even treated to a free bottle of water. I had to buy a packet of salted peanuts and bottle of water since I missed lunch.

They don t offer even a glass of water need to buy a drink if you are tursty they can save money and timeby cancel the food offer for 1 hr fly both fly nobody buy and try sale on boad thinkthe we can buyduty free store

Compared with other LCC, Air Asia is a lot better

AirAsia is running a bait scam by listing a lot of flights to get as much booking as possible but ending up merging the flights to fill the seat. They will change the schedule as much as they would like. Just beware when booking their flights and if you are tight on schedule. Prepare to be disappointed.

We had an emergency seat to more comfortable and more leg room. It was good for a budget airline

Liked the food. It’s was delicious! The cleanliness was average.. we saw dried liquid stains on the seat head in front. The flight was delayed. My experience with other airlines is that the flight crew usually announces an apology for the delay . Maybe air Asia doesn’t deem it necessary.. In summary the only positive that stood out was the food.

My flight got cancelled 7 days before departure, the the replacement flight was cancelled again and I was not notified, but found out during check in.

Delayed by 2 plus hours and utter chaos at the boarding gate. Boarding gate changed twice. People were stuck at the boarding gate with no access to food water or medicine.

The seats are not great and there is no entertainment. However, it is a discount line, the people are great, check in was easy, the food options were decent and inexpensive, the flight was on time, and we arrived safely. No complaints for the cost. Would fly again!

Efficient turnaround, flight on-time. Pre-ordered food arrived hot and was pretty good for the price.

Lion Air aircrafts always switch off A/C while parking in the tarmac and let its boarded passenger feel "the sauna". I believe modern aircraft has what so called APU to power the AC while waiting for boatding procesd

There was a stopover and they didn't tell us we had to deplane, our ticket didn't show this stopover and there was no time for a layover, just 10 minutes to run from one plane through security to another plane with the same flight number. They don't serve even water on the plane, it was awful.

One hour Late to board. An additional hour later to arrive at our stop. Not running A/C while boarding so even the cabin crew were sweating profusely. My knees were into the next seat for the first time in my life. Cabin seemed in okay condition.

Flight was delayed by 2 hours, there was a pack of biscuits and water included as compensation. It seemed to happen a lot as some people knew it was going to be delayed..

Boarding was delayed by a quarter hour but take off was delayed about half an hour from the scheduled time. But the longest delay was in the waiting time for delivery of the luggage after arrival at Jakarta International Airport which took an hour after passengers disembarked into the terminal.

The trip canceled and transferred me to another flight after 1 hour

8 Days in Indonesia: A Travel Itinerary From Jakarta to Bali

trip jakarta bali

Indonesia might induce a bit of analysis paralysis in even the most experienced traveler—after all, the archipelago has over 17,000 islands—but the beginning Indonesia traveler can get the most out of their visit by limiting their trip to the two neighboring islands of Java and Bali.

Java is one of the most densely populated islands in Southeast Asia , and its long heritage of indigenous Javanese culture makes the place a must-see for any traveler visiting the region. Our itinerary's Java leg will include stays in  Jakarta (Indonesia's bustling, engorged capital) and Yogyakarta (a center for Javanese culture) before jetting over to Bali just over the Bali Strait.

Our Bali leg will involve a day in South Bali , before taking a short drive up to Central Bali and Ubud , where you can experience the indigenous Balinese culture at its proudest and most refined.

However, before undertaking any trip to Indonesia, you should review the following travel basics:

  • Indonesia travel information : Learn all about Indonesia's visa requirements, currency, and safety guidelines for foreign travelers.
  • Money and money changers in Bali : Learn about the local currency, how to change dollars and pounds to the Indonesian rupiah (IDR), and where to have your foreign currency exchanged while on the island of Bali.
  • Drug laws in Bali and the rest of Indonesia: Drug possession and trafficking in Bali and the rest of Indonesia can get you in deep trouble so it's wise to understand the laws.

Day 1: Jakarta's Historical Sites

On your first day, you'll fly into the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta, at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Nicknamed the "Big Durian,” this sprawling megalopolis covers over 290 square miles in the western part of Java. Once you've checked into your hotel, either in Central Jakarta or in North Jakarta—budget travelers will love the cheap and plentiful budget hotels in Jakarta—your tour of the "Big Durian" can begin.

Jakarta's reputation as a polluted, traffic-choked city has, unfortunately, preceded it, but nobody should miss the chance to tour this unique city. Jakarta is an interesting study in Indonesia's modern history, as it used to be the center of the Dutch colonial presence in the "East Indies,” as Indonesia was called at the time, and entered the postwar years under the sway of the charismatic but ultimately doomed President Sukarno. The Dutch colonizers and the strongman that replaced them shaped Jakarta's most popular landmarks.

Visitors should start with a visit to Fatahillah Square in the north of the city, the crumbling former Dutch colonial capital. The vast square used to be a venue for public executions, while the former statehouse behind it is now a museum dedicated to Indonesia's colonial history.

Next, move south to Central Jakarta, and you travel in time from the 19th to the 20th century, where Indonesia's first president Sukarno solidified his place in Indonesia's history with several notable buildings.

The Monas (short for "national monument" in Indonesian) towers over Central Jakarta, the navel of a plaza that is itself surrounded by government buildings and the Presidential Palace. Book a tour to the very top of the Monas to get a bird's eye view of Central Jakarta. Then, just a short distance away, you can visit Istiqlal Mosque —the biggest mosque in Southeast Asia, whose size is very appropriate for the biggest Islamic nation in the region.

Make a retail detour to Jalan Surabaya Antique Market , where you can look over a treasure trove of Indonesian antiques, old shadow puppets, salvaged ship parts, used luggage, and vinyl LPs, before finishing off your day with a visit to a Padang restaurant , where you can try a vast range of Indonesian dishes served on little plates, along with all the rice you can eat.

Day 2: Bandung

Head to just a little south of the city of Jakarta is the city of Bandung , another Dutch-immigrant-created town nestled among mountains along a river basin. You should be able to drive or take a bus between the two fairly quickly, but we recommend departing early on your second day to make the most of the daylight hours.

Bandung is highly influenced by Dutch visitors who had hoped to make the city the new capital of the nation. This immediately inspired an influx of residents when it was first established, which eventually resulted in the creation of the sprawling city full of fine dining, European-inspired custom boutiques, and arts and cultural spots visitors enjoy today.

Once you arrive in Bandung, you can head over to Tangkuban Perahu, a volcano just north of the city (pictured above). Although the last time this volcano erupted was in 2013, the volcano is still considered active and you should check before planning a visit to this beautiful location.

After the volcano, you’ll not want to miss checking out some of the many, many tea plantations in and around the city of Bandung, most of which have existed and been in use since the Dutch immigrants first tried to claim power over the region.

You’ll then want to make it back into the city before nightfall to check into your hotel—we recommend the Dusun Bambu’s Room Facilities—and grab a bite to eat at any number of great restaurants in the area—ask your hotel concierge or consult TripAdvisor’s list of “Best Places to Eat in Bandung” to plan your dinner or simply wander around until something suits your tastes.

Day 3: Bandung

Whether or not you decide to stay at the Dusun Bambu Family Leisure Park, you’ll want to make your way there to start off your second day in Bandung to fully immerse yourself in Sudanese culture in a fun and environmentally friendly eco-tourism spot.

Here, you’ll be able to dine in a birdcage-inspired restaurant held aloft on stilts or in any number of great Sudanese establishments. Fun for the whole family includes rowing around on the waterfront, riding horses, petting rabbits, or playing on the uniquely designed kid’s playground.

You can easily spend the whole day at Dusun Bambu, but we recommend moving on to explore another great cultural venue: Saung Angklung Udjo, a one-stop workshop that teaches children of all ages about the music and culture of Indonesia. Here, you can experience a live concert, or even learn to play one of the traditional instruments taught at this unique center for art and culture.

Once you’ve finished with Saung Angklung Udjo, we recommend getting another great meal from one of Bandung’s many great restaurants before heading back to the hotel and calling it an early night—you’ll need to be awake quite early for another day of travel on day four of your trek.

Day 4: Borobudur & Prambanan

Early in the morning, board a bus or a hired car to take you to the massive Buddhist mandala known as Borobudur, more than an hour's drive from Yogyakarta. The walkways leading up to the top levels are decorated with 2,672 relief panels that tell stories of the Buddha's life and traditional Buddhist parables.

After you return from Borobudur, spend the noontime hours chasing the shade and pursuing retail therapy in Yogyakarta: buying silver at Kota Gede or watch batik being made in many workshops across the city, prior to buying your favorite swatches.

Not far from Yogyakarta's city borders, you can visit Candi Prambanan, an ancient Hindu temple complex that keeps coming back from the dead—several earthquakes have shaken the temple apart, but the local government keeps putting the pieces back together.

After exploring the temple grounds, book a seat to watch the Ramayana dance performance at Prambanan, performed on an open-air stage in front of the majestically-lit Prambanan temples.

Day 5: Yogyakarta's Kraton

First things first: You'll want to visit the very center of Yogyakarta, the Kraton , an expansive palace compound that is the home of Indonesia's only ruling Sultan, Hamengkubuwono IX.

Yogyakarta's social, cultural, and spiritual life revolves around the Sultan and his palace: Daily Javanese entertainments take place at the palace's Bangsal Sri Manganti pavilion, and the massive Alun-Alun Utara field north of the main residential area of the palace hosts the yearly Pasar Malam (night market) that accompanies the Sekaten , a week-long celebration of the Prophet Muhammad's birth.

Exploring the Kraton will take about two hours to complete; afterward, you can explore the museums and tourist attractions around the Kraton, which are all accessible via becak (Yogyakarta's rickshaws) from the palace gates.

Start with a lunch of gudeg at Sentra Gudeg Wijilan , a clump of eateries located east of Alun-Alun Utara along Jalan Wijilan. Gudeg is Yogyakarta's signature dish: a jackfruit-based savory preparation served hot with rice, crispy beef skin, and hard-boiled egg.

Afterward, explore the other attractions nearby: the Museum Kereta , which collects the Sultan's 23 ornate carriages; the Taman Sari, a former swimming, and bathing complex built for the Sultan's use; and Masjid Gede Kauman , Yogyakarta's Westminster Abbey equivalent, immediately across the Alun-Alun Utara.

Day 5: South Bali

Fly in early from Yogyakarta to Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport (compare prices on flights from Adisucipto Airport in Yogyakarta to Ngurah Rai in Bali) to get a head start on the Bali leg of our Indonesia itinerary.

For your first night, stay in South Bali, the tourist epicenter of the island. You have plenty of accommodations to choose from in these parts.

There's plenty to do within an hour's drive of your South Bali resort, but for your first day, we suggest you hit the following spots:

  • Visit the world's biggest statue of Vishnu (as yet unfinished) at the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park.
  • Go shopping at one of South Bali's many shopping centers.
  • Drive all the way to Pura Luhur Uluwatu and watch the area's Kecak and fire dance .
  • On the way back from Uluwatu, stop by Jimbaran, Bali to dine right on the beach.

Day 6: Central Bali

Early in the morning, take the hour-and-a-half drive up from South Bali to Ubud in Central Bali, where Bali's magnificent culture lives a charmed life. As you arrive, make sure you have your accommodations lined up.

In the daytime, check out the many art galleries & museums in Ubud, and see why Ubud's reputation as an art and culture hub is so richly deserved. The Museum Puri Lukisan presents modern 20th-century artwork produced by native Balinese while the Blanco Renaissance Museum showcases artwork created by an expatriate artist whose creative juices ran wild as he settled into Ubud.

Before 12-noon strikes, queue up at the Warung Ibu Oka to secure a table early; this open-air restaurant serves babi guling , or Balinese roast pig, for an extremely small number of diners every day. The restaurant is only open for lunch and closes as soon as the last pig is chopped up and served.

From Warung Ibu Oka, walk down Jalan Monkey Forest to do an afternoon tour of Ubud's Sacred Monkey Forest at the very end of the road, at the bottom of the slope. The forest and temples within will take about an hour or two to see in full.

Afterward, trudge back up to the Ubud town center to watch a traditional dance performance at Ubud Palace; the performances in town re-enact classic Hindu legends, performed by dancers in colorful, traditional costumes.

Day 7: Taking it Easy in Ubud

After the excitement of the past few days, it's now time to take it easy—and where better to kick back than infamously laid-back Ubud?

Ubud's many spas and meditation centers perform all types of Eastern and Western wellness techniques, from massage to reiki healing to acupuncture to herbal medicine.

Your last day in Ubud is also a great time to sample Ubud's shopping scene: Beginning from the Ubud Art Market across the street from the royal palace (pictured above), you can explore the many boutiques, shops, and stalls radiating from the center of Ubud to the periphery. Jalan Monkey Forest, in particular, has plenty of interesting upscale shopping finds .

Day 8: Tanjung Benoa

For your return engagement to South Bali, go to the eastern part and stay in Tanjung Benoa, the aquasports center of the island. The beach off Tanjung Benoa is no good for surfing, but it's encouraged a more laid-back tourist scene compared to more hectic Kuta on the other side of the island. Spend the morning learning a new aquasport, then tuck in at one of the restaurants in Tanjung Benoa before enjoying a spa break at the Thalasso Bali Spa.

In the evening, catch the Devdan performance at the Bali Nusa Dua Theatre, to see Indonesia's rich dance heritage condensed into a single, spectacular two-hour show: An excellent way to end your long week in Indonesia.

Road trip Jakarta Bali 2023 pastilah melewati jalan tol, oleh karenanya siapkan e-toll dengan saldo yang cukup. Jangan sampai, tidak membawa  e-toll jadi penghambat kamu di perjalanan.

Fisik Pengemudi Harus Prima

Road trip Jakarta Bali

Gerbang Tol Cikampek

Lalu berapa tarif tol Jakarta Bali?

  • Tarif Tol Gempol-Pasuruan: Rp 36.000
  • Tarif Tol Pasuruan-Probolinggo Timur: Rp 30.000

Biaya Penyeberangan Kapal Ketapang – Gilimanuk

Road trip Jakarta Bali

Pelabuhan Ketapang, Banyuwangi. Foto: Istimewa

  • Golongan I (sepeda): Rp 10.050
  • Golongan II (sepeda motor (< 500cc)): Rp 29.050
  • Golongan III (sepeda motor (>= 500cc)): Rp 42.500
  • Golongan IVA (mobil/sedan (<= 5 m)): Rp 199.850
  • Golongan IVB (mobil barang (<= 5 m)): Rp 172.150
  • Golongan VA (bus sedang (<= 7 m)): Rp 392.000
  • Golongan VB (truk sedang (<= 7 m)): Rp 291.650
  • Golongan (bus besar (<= 10 m)): Rp 593.350
  • Golongan VIB (truk besar (<= 10 m)): Rp 484.900
  • Golongan VII (truk trailer (<= 12 m)): Rp 598.500
  • Golongan VIII (truk trailer (<= 16 m)): Rp 843.100
  • Golongan IX (truk trailer (> 16 m)): Rp 1.167.650

road trip jakarta bali - mitsubishi xpander

Total Biaya Road Trip Jakarta Bali Pulang Pergi (PP)

Road trip Jakarta Bali

Biaya road trip jakarta bali pulang pergi mencapai Rp 4,55 jutaan

Hanya saja memang waktu tempuhnya cukup lama. Dari Jakarta ke Bali saja butuh 20 jam. Maka ditambah perjalanan pulang jadi total 40 jam.

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO?

Bali to jakarta by train, bus and ferry | traveler’s guide.

Posted By: Renegade Travels | Posted in: Bali , Banyuwangi , Denpasar , Gilimanuk , Indonesia , Jakarta , Java , Ketapang , Surabaya

For those of you who are looking to get from Bali to Jakarta this year, I thought you might benefit from reading my experience taking the train, bus and ferry to travel between the two.

For this part of our trip we decided to take the scenic route from Bali to Jakarta . The journey involved a series of transportation changes that can be boiled down to the following:

  • A taxi from our hotel to the bus station in Denpasar
  • A bus from there to Gilimanuk
  • A ferry to Ketapang/Banyuwangi (Java)
  • A train to Surabaya
  • Finally, a train to Jakarta.

We’re going to walk you through this process step-by-step with pictures that should help give you an idea of what to expect (similar to how I did helping you to get from Denpasar airport to Ubud, Bali ). This journey can be done in one go, but we decided to break it up and stop along the way.

From Our Hotel to Ubung Bus Station

We got a taxi for the first part of the journey, and after chatting with some locals we opted to take a Bluebird Taxi , as we were told that this was the most reliable and honest taxi company in Denpasar. We booked the taxi via email, and found this to be a very efficient way to book.

*Note : Since our trip, Uber has also become available in Bali, Indonesia. I’ve heard they’re possibly much cheaper, so it’s worth checking it out.

World Nomads Travel Insurance

The taxi arrived a few minutes early, and the driver was very polite and professional, which is usually not the case in SE Asia. It took around 20-30 minutes to get to the bus station and cost around 42,000 IDR (~US$3). Click on their website link above to get their email and phone details.

Finding a Bus | Denpasar To Gilimanuk

Our Bus From Denpasar To Banyuwangi via Gilimanuk

Our Bus From Denpasar To Banyuwangi via Gilimanuk

After such a pleasant taxi ride, I suppose it was too much to ask to also have a good bus experience. When we arrived at Ubung Bus Station, we were instantly surrounded by a group of men who wanted to know where we were going. This is never a good sign.

They insisted on carrying our bags the very short distance to the buses – for free, of course. Also usually not a good sign. Of course, they had the ideal bus for us – the most expensive one there. They wanted 180,000 IDR (~US$13) each for a ticket to Gilimanuk.

We had read that it was less than that to get a combined bus and train ticket all the way to Surabaya, so we declined their offer. We then asked around to see if there were any other options. The problem was that there were so many people that wanted to “help” us that is was all very confusing.

Finally, we asked at the small ticket offices and were quoted 50,000 IDR (~US$3.70) for a local bus and 100,000 IDR (~US$7.40) for an air conditioned bus with toilet.

View From Denpasar To Gilimanuk Bus

View From Denpasar To Gilimanuk Bus

While we were discussing which bus to get, another “helpful” person said that the 100,000 IDR bus wasn’t in fact going to where we wanted to go, but that another bus was. So we checked that bus, and it was 75,000 IDR ($6.70) including the ferry crossing to Banyuwangi. This apparently had aircon and toilet, but looked a lot older. We were now thoroughly confused, but still kept getting hassled to get the various buses.

What decided it for us was that the 75,000 IDR bus was actually about to leave, so we got on that. It left at 13:15.

It was a  bit chaotic to begin with, because leaving meant driving around the corner and then stopping to wait for more passengers. Then driving around another corner to wait for a few more. It eventually got going at 14:00.

Taking the bus to Gilimanuk

The 4-hour journey was mostly along very hilly and winding roads, and the bus kept overtaking lorries at what didn’t seem like very safe places. I’d consider the bus driving fairly dangerous, but it’s what I’ve come to expect in many parts of SE Asia.

After a couple of hours we needed to use the toilet, but discovered that the section at the back that looked like a toilet was in fact a small storage room . It looked like it might have been a toilet in the past, but not any longer. So what to do? We asked the assistants and the driver, but their English wasn’t good enough to understand.

Eventually we stopped at an area where a building had been knocked down, but still had an outside toilet, so we had to use that. But it was a squat toilet without a door.

This wasn’t mentioned in the brochures I read about beautiful Bali.

Important Note:  We had read that there is a new bus station in Denpasar called Mengwi, and that all large buses now depart from there and not Ubung. But that isn’t the case at all. There were about 10-15 large buses in Ubung station, and lots of passengers. Our bus stopped at Mengwi station, but there weren’t any other buses there, and we only saw a few people sitting around. I think these were the bemo drivers and not passengers. So despite what you read, I suggest you use Ubung bus station.

Gilimanuk To Banyuwangi By Ferry

Upper Deck Of Gilimanuk To Banyuwangi Ferry

Eventually we got to Gilimanuk and onto the ferry. The bus ticket included the ferry crossing, so we didn’t need to buy a ticket for the crossing. The ferries cross every 15-30 mins, 24 hours a day, and the crossing takes around 45-60 minutes.

Gilimanuk To Ketapang & Banyuwangi Ferry

The upper deck of the ferry is fairly small, and many people there were smoking. But there was a smaller aircon room that was a no smoking area. Being on the water here was quite different than our time scuba diving in Bali !

There was also a small cafe on the upper deck that sold tea, coffee, pot noodles and other snacks. Quite a few food sellers also came onto the bus as we got on the ferry. There was also a man with a guitar that sang and collected money. He played when we got on the bus and again when the ferry arrived in Ketapang, which is the ferry terminal next to the small town of Banyuwangi.

Ferry Arriving in Ketapang/Banyuwangi - With Ijen Volcano View

As the ferry arrives, you have a view of Ijen volcano. We did a tour of Ijen which included walking down into the crater of this active volcano. It’s definitely worth looking into!

We got off the bus at the ferry terminal and got a bemo to our hotel, the Ketapang Indah Hotel , where we stayed for four nights. The hotel is about 2-3 km from the ferry terminal. Banyuwangi train station is about 100-200 meters from the ferry terminal. Just turn right as you leave the harbour exit, and the station will be on your left, a little further along.

Banyuwangi To Surabaya By Train

There are two trains a day on this route. We got the 08:30 train, which arrived in Surabaya at 14:56. The other train leaves at 22:00 and arrives at 04:20. One thing that you need to know is that you have to show your passport when you buy a train ticket.

If you don’t have your passport with you, you’ll get turned away. You will also have to show your passport when you arrive at the station to get the train.

You can either travel Eksekutif class (1st class) or Bisnis class (2nd class). The ticket prices vary depending on when you buy them and what tickets are left. We paid 100,000 IDR ($7.40) each for Bisinis class tickets. Eksekutif class tickets were 140,000 IDR (~US$10.30). You can get up-to-date train times and ticket prices at Kerati Api .

Banyuwangi Baru Train Station

This train is the best we have traveled on in our trip around SE Asia. It’s not up to European standards, but the train was very clean and the staff helpful and well-presented. We even had a porter who carried our bags onto the train and showed us to our seats.

Bisinis Class Carriage

The Bisinis class carriages have double seats, which I’ve never seen on a train. The seats are fairly comfortable and have a small shelf to the left to hold cups. But there’s no seatback tray like on other trains.

Double Seating In Bisinis Class Carriage

Also next to the seat is an electrical socket, which is useful for charging your cell phone or laptop. Even most European trains I’ve been on didn’t have one of these.

Electrical Socket Next To Seat

As with many SE Asian trains, there was a squat toilet. These can take some getting used to for some people.

Squat Toilet On Indonesian Train

During the journey, food and drinks were brought around often, and the food was served on proper plates. This is also something that you don’t usually see on trains. You could also order other food and drinks which they then brought to your seat.

Noodles For Sale On Train

The train arrived at Surabaya Gubeng station on time.

Surabaya Gubeng Station

We wanted to use a Bluebird Taxi to take us to our hotel, but couldn’t see one at the station. So we got a Nurimas Taxi instead. Big mistake. The driver told us that he would use the meter, but then claimed the minimum charge was 35,000 IDR ($3.10), and didn’t bother using the meter. So he lied just to get us in the car.

I later found out that the cost should have been around 20,000 IDR ($1.80). I don’t really care about paying the extra but don’t like feeling that I’ve been ripped off and lied to. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this taxi company. I asked one of the women at the hotel about this taxi company, and she said “N o, no, no, don’t use them. Very bad “.

I’ve since found out that the Bluebird Taxis are parked just outside the station exit, so I’d advise getting one of those. We used them while in Surabaya and they always used the meters. I’ve found them to be very reliable and honest, and many locals have told me that they are the best taxi company.

For our two nights in Surabaya, we stayed at Family Guest House , which turned out to be a great choice.

Surabaya To Jakarta By Train

We bought our tickets for this train from Surabaya Gubeng train station (which was near our hotel), but the train left from Surabaya Pasarturi train station. So make sure you’re at the correct station, because trains to Jakarta depart from both of these stations. We paid 450,000 IDR ($40) each for our Eksekutif class tickets. The journey is usually around 10 hours, so we wanted to travel in comfort.

When we bought our train tickets in Banyuwangi, we both had to show our passports. But this time we had to fill in a ticket reservation form, which seemed a little strange. We didn’t have to show our passports when buying the tickets, but we did have to show them when we arrived at the station to catch the train. So there’s no consistency in buying tickets at different stations. So all I can advise is to be prepared.

Ticket Reservation Form

The train left Surabaya Pasarturi at 08:15 and arrived at Jakarta Gambir station at around 19:00, although it was due to arrive at 17:56.

Jakarta Train About To Leave Surabaya Pasarturi Station

The  Eksekutif  class coaches have seating that’s more comfortable than the  Bisinis  class coaches, and the seats also have a little extra leg room. These are comparable to the standard of European trains, and we were quite impressed with both the comfort and standard of service.

Eksekutif Class Seats On The Surabaya To Jakarta Train

The arms of the seats have trays that fold out, so you’re able to eat any food you buy quite easily.

Socket To Charge Cell Phone Or Laptop

Each set of seats has a socket on the window side, just like the Bisinis class seats have.

Inside An Eksekutif Class Carriage

The coaches look a little like the inside of an aircraft, with the individual overhead space for each seat.

Menu On The Eksekutif Class Carriages

Just like in Bisinis class, the staff come around often with food and drink. But on Eksekutif class there is also a printed menu that you can choose food from.

Train Timetable

On the back of the menu, the train times are printed. I was quite amused to find out that the train was due to arrive at Cirebon station at 14:55, and depart at 14:60. Yes, 14.60!

View From Our Train

The journey itself was fairly uneventful, with the train mostly traveling through countryside that was planted with various food crops. We did however pass alongside the sea at one point.

A Porter Carrying Our Bags

There are always porters available to carry your bags on and off the train if you want them to. The previous two times we used them they didn’t ask for a specific tip, but just accepted what we gave them.

However, when we arrived in Jakarta, the porter carried our bags to the station exit before he mentioned that he wanted 20,000 IDR ($1.80). This seemed a bit excessive, but we paid and smiled. We were quite impressed with how he coped with carrying three bags, including my 20 kg suitcase on his shoulder. He carried the bags like this from inside the train, all the way down the stairs to the exit.

Arriving At Jakarta Gambir

And so we had finally arrived in Jakarta after setting off from Bali six days ago. All in all we much preferred traveling this way than by plane, as it gave us a chance to see some interesting things along the way.

Taxi From Jakarta Gambir Station

To get from the station to our hotel we took a Bluebird taxi from outside the station. Leave the station via the north exit and then turn right. You’ll see a Bluebird taxi stand about 20 meters away. You need to pay 5,000 IDR ($0.45) to book the taxi. You’ll then be given a ticket with a queue number. Once your taxi arrives you’ll have to pay another 5,000 IDR to get out of the station, and then the metered taxi fare at the end of your journey. It cost 18,000 IDR ($1.60) to get to our hotel, which was around 2-3 km away.

There are other taxis outside the station, but I’d advise sticking to the Bluebird taxis, as these are the ones that most Indonesians trust, and the ones that I’ve always had a good experience with.

Conclusion | Bali to Jakarta

Hopefully this overview describing how to travel from Bali to Jakarta has been useful! As with any sort of in southeast Asia, it’s quite possible that parts of this journey (and the costs of travel around Indonesia ) have changed. Hopefully, these change are for the better!

However it turns out, any travel like this requires you to be flexible and patient. It’s far too easy to get frustrated in Indonesia or other such countries not only because it’s a different culture but because it’s not nearly as easy to get from point A to point B.

Enjoy your trip and let me know how it goes!

Indonesia Itinerary for 10 Days: Jakarta to Bali Route

' src=

Are you planning a trip to Indonesia? If so, then this Indonesia Itinerary can help you plan an amazing trip to this beautiful country.

I first visited Indonesia in 2017 and completely fell in love with the country. The beaches were amazing, the waterfalls are beautiful, and it was fun (almost!) to include both Jakarta and Bali in our Indonesia 10-Day Itinerary.

After coming back from this gorgeous country, I wished to have stayed longer there but my job stopped me from pursuing this thought and so, I had to make do with a short but memorable 10 days in this country of volcanoes and islands.

If you are also short on time and wondering how to make the most of the short duration, then this itinerary is perfect for you.

Indonesia Itinerary for 10 Days

If you are just like me and don’t have a lot of time to spare in this country, then this 10-day Indonesia guide will help you plan a short but amazing trip to this paradise.

Day 1: India to Jakarta (Indonesia)

My Indonesia trip started from India, from Hyderabad to be precise. I had my flights booked for Jakarta – the capital of Indonesia and had a 2-hour layover at Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

Since I had chosen an Air Asia flight, it was budget-friendly and cost me only 18000-20000 INR for a return trip to Indonesia.

Note : If you are planning to book an AirAsia flight, then book it from the official website. Your PNR number should be the same for layover flights so that you don’t need to check in your bags again during the layover.

Day 2: Jakarta to Yogyakarta

On the second day of my Indonesia trip, I reached Jakarta around 12 p.m. and was really struggling to understand how to go to Yogyakarta. Since it was the week of the Eid holiday in Indonesia, all the trains were full and I only had the option to take a bus to reach Yogyakarta.

For this, I had to reach the Pulo Gebang bus stand from where I could book an onward bus to Yogyakarta . Since I was on a budget trip, I chose to take a local bus from the airport to Pulo Gebang . It cost me around 40,000 Indonesia Rupiah (190 INR)  a person and it took around an hour to reach the bus terminal.

From Pulo Gebang, I got an A.C bus to Yogyakarta which took around 8-10 hours to reach and cost me 425,000 Indonesia Rupiah (2050 INR) per person. The bus was quite comfortable and had an attached bathroom that was decent enough to be used. I reached Yogyakarta around 2 a.m. and had to take a cab to reach our homestay.

In Indonesia, Go-Jek App is quite famous and cheap but I didn’t have the app installed so we had to hire a taxi on the road which cost us 80000 Rupiah (380 INR) , a little more than the gojek car. I finally reached our homestay ( 50000 Rupiah (250 INR) per person) around 3 a.m. and hit the bed because we were too tired from the 24-hour journey.

Day 3: Yogyakarta Sightseeing and then Transfer to Kuta, Bali

Borobudur temple and prambanan temple (yogyakarta).

The next day, I planned to visit the famous Borobudur   Temple and the Prambanan Temple which Yogyakarta is quite famous for. So, we left the homestay with our luggage since we had a night flight to catch for Bali.

We left around 11 a.m for Borobudur and spent around 30-45 minutes looking for a bus or a cab. Finally, an Uber arrived and we boarded it to head out to Borobudur which was situated around 50 km from Yogyakarta.

Luckily, our Uber driver was really friendly and nice and since he knew English, we were able to talk to him and learn more about the history and volcanoes of Java and the rest of Indonesia. He told us many amazing stories and also offered to take us from Borobudur to Prambanan and then leave us at the airport.

So, we traveled the whole day in an A.C SUV for 470000 Rupiah (2300 INR).  We certainly could have reduced the cost if we knew the area well and had a clue about the bus routes but alas, we were blindsided there.

We first went to Borobudur and reached this place around 2 p.m.

Let me just say that, it was definitely love at first sight. We have always been to historical and nature-friendly places and Borobudur is one such marvelous place. You see so many Stupas here, arranged so beautifully together and you can see volcanic mountains surrounding this place which provides an amazing view.

The sunrise is said to be really exceptional here and you could easily spend a whole day just gazing around and walking through this architectural beauty.

trip jakarta bali

We spent around 2 hours here and didn’t even realize so much time had passed when it struck us that Prambanan stays open only till 5 p.m. So, we ran to find our car and start for the other amazing site, we stopped at the pharmacy but we got lost on our way out (Yeah, the exit from Borobudur can be a little confusing). Although if you have time in hand, we would definitely advise you to not miss the sunrise in Borobudur.

Thankfully, our driver was waiting just outside the exit so he guided us to the car and we sped toward the Prambanan temple to witness the sunset over there. On our way, our guide told us an amazing story of the Prambanan princess and how the 999 temples of Prambanan came to exist.

We finally reached the famous Prambanan temple around 4.45 p.m and then we just strolled around marveling at the beauty of it all. The temples here resemble the Angkor Wat temple and you can also see the Merebu volcano from here. We were completely mesmerized by the beautiful sunset here and wished we had a little more time.

Finally, we started for the Yogyakarta airport for our flight to Bali ( 3200 INR ) and said goodbye to the cultural city of Indonesia.

Note: Entrance tickets (770000 Rupiah – 3700 INR per person) to these UNESCO Heritage sites is quite expensive and valid for 2-3 days so make sure that you make the most of it and spend at least a day at both the sites.

We reached Bali, the most popular place in Indonesia,  around 11.30 p.m. and so we headed to find a hostel for the night. The cabs are pretty expensive over here so we walked the whole way from the airport to Kuta. It took us around 1-1.5 hours to reach the hostel and to know that it was already full.

So, we went in search of another hostel that might be within our budget and that is how we stumbled upon Legion street and the Kayun Hostel Downtown which is 100000 Rupiah (500 INR) per person for a night.

Day 4: Kuta Sightseeing

The next day, we started for the beaches and the famous Uluwatu temple of Bali . We hired a scooty from the beachfront side for 130000 Rupiah (650 INR) .

Kuta beach was too crowded and more a place for surfers and families so we didn’t spend too much time here.

Jimbaran and Pantai Pandawa Beach

We headed to the Jimbaran beach which was actually more peaceful and spent an hour or two here. We had our lunch on the beach on a sunbed which cost me about 2150000 Rupiah (650 INR) .

Then, we headed to the Pantai Pandawa beach which was on the other side. It took us about 45 minutes to reach the place but it was so worth it.

The route to Pantai Pandawa goes through a hilly road so there are a lot of twists and turns which really make the whole adventure so much more fun. And the view near the Pantai Pandawa beach is just too gorgeous with the blue sea and the bright blue sky.

Uluwatu Temple

Next, we headed to the Uluwatu temple which was another 40 minutes through the hilly terrain. And it was certainly both exciting and scary. Driving in the Kuta region is a little scary as people speed a lot and the roads are too hilly so you have to be extra careful.

By the time we reached Uluwatu temple ( Entrance price: 30000 Rupiah – 150 INR per person), it is almost dark and the temple was about to close but we hurried a little and were able to look from the inside.

This temple on the cliff is really beautiful and there are regular shows held here which you can watch to learn a little more about the Balinese culture.

Finally, we headed back to our hostel as we had planned to party a little in the streets and so, we went back and dressed up.

We danced with random strangers in different clubs and really enjoyed the vibe here and has a really expensive meal (98500 Rupiah – 500 INR per person) at Sky Garden Bali on Legion street but the entire night was completely worth it.

Day 5: Kuta to Ubud and Sacred Monkey Sanctuary

On our 5th day, we were heading for the Ubud region which held the main attraction for us. We had booked a van through our hostel itself which cost us 80000 Rupiah (400 INR) per person and took 2-3 hours to reach the place.

There, we checked in a hostel named The Joker Hostel ( 100000 Rupiah – 500 INR per person) and then we made our way to the famous Ubud Monkey Sanctuary .

Ubud Monkey Sanctuary

It was within walking distance from our place so it took us just 20 minutes to reach and take the ticket ( 50000 Rupiah – 250 INR per person).

The thing about Ubud is that it has a completely opposite vibe to Kuta. It is not a party place and most shops close down here by 10 p.m. but it has a much cleaner and cooler atmosphere. Also, there are many amazing temples, waterfalls, and other attractions here than in the Kuta region.

The Monkey Sanctuary was one which is actually huge and filled with numerous monkeys (as the name suggests). It is a great place to just chill and relax and roam about.

Also, there are many exit points here so you have to be careful and always beware of the monkeys, they can snatch away any interesting items from you. 😛

Then, we headed back to our hostel from another gate which took us about 45 minutes. We relaxed for some time in the hostel. In the evening, we just strolled around the shopping street and had a delicious Pizza meal at one of the places.

Day 6: Ubud Sightseeing

Tegalalang rice fields (unesco heritage site).

This was our D-day when we were going to cover the most important spots in Ubud. We started with the famous Ubud Tegelalang   Rice Fields and were met with a slow downpour of rain. However, on the way, we witnessed a really pretty sunrise which absolutely made our day.

Once we reached the Tegelalang rice field, we were just blown away by its beauty and its vastness. We didn’t even realize how big this place actually is so we just walked deeper into the place and spent a greater part of our morning here. Also, there is no entrance fee for this place so don’t fall for anyone’s trap.

Teganungan Waterfall

Next, we came back to our hostel to have some breakfast, and then we made our way to another famous attraction, Tegenungan Waterfall . The entry ticket to the waterfall is about 20000 Rupiah (100 INR) per person. But make sure you visit this place in the morning because, by the afternoon, it gets really crowded.

So, we spent a couple of hours here just splashing in the water and then hiking to the top of the waterfall.

Balinese Massage and Swing at Zen Hideaway

Then, we headed back to the city to try the famous Balinese massage. ( 100000 Rupiah – 500 INR per person)

Now, this was our first time so we weren’t sure how it would be and how embarrassing it might turn out to be. But I must say, both of us were completely satisfied with our experience.

Our entire body felt completely loose and languid after it. Gosh, I can still remember how great it felt to just relax and let yourself get massaged.

After that, we headed for the highest swing in Bali at Zen Hideaway which was about 45 minutes from our hostel. The way to this place is absolutely picturesque and you can witness a gorgeous sunset from here too.

When we reached Zen Hideaway, the sun was about to set but we still had enough time to enjoy ourselves. So, I paid 520000 Rupiah (2500 INR) and then first tried my luck at the small swing to myself acquainted.

Once I was comfortable, I moved on to the bigger swing, and God, how lovely it felt. It felt as if I was just flying in the sky with no tension or fear.

Truly, that was one of the most freeing experiences of my life and I am so glad that I gave it a shot.

Day 7: Ubud to Kuta to Denpasar (Bali) to Probolinggo

Early morning, we started for the famous Campuhan Ridge Walk.  The place was barely 2 km from our hostel and then stopped at the Water Palace on the way too.

Both of these places are really amazing and great places to explore in the morning. We witnessed a beautiful sunrise from the Campuhan Ridgewalk although it took around 30-40 minutes of hiking on the path.

Kuta to Denpasar (Bali)

Next, we endured a series of misfortunes that incidentally made our Indonesia itinerary even more memorable. We accidentally booked the wrong flight tickets for Surabaya which was near our next destination.

As a result, we had to figure out some other way to reach Surabaya from Bali. After a lot of searches, we found a bus that would be leaving in the evening so we booked it for our journey.

We had some time to kill so we asked about the Scuba Diving cost and how much time it would take. The tour guide said it would barely take 2 hours and the cost would be 400000 Rupiah (2000 INR)  per person which was quite cheap.

Alas, we forgot to counter the fact that traffic in Kuta is unimaginable and so, we missed our bus.

Thankfully, the owner of the tour guide returned our money. We headed to the Denpasar bus in a taxi ( 115000 Rupiah – 560 INR ). All this drama certainly added the cost but we hoped to reach Bromo on time and be able to visit the famous volcano.

Denpasar to Probolinggo

We found a bus for Probolinggo for 320000 Rupiah (1600 INR) per person which took 12 hours.

The most interesting part about this journey was that the buses are transported to the other island via a ferry. So, they get loaded into the big ferries where you can go on the deck and stretch your legs for a while.

Day 8: Probolinggo to Mount Bromo to Yogyakarta

Probolinggo to mount bromo.

We reached Probolinggo at 5 a.m. in the morning. Then, we walked to the bus stand where we would find vans for Bromo.

Sadly, there weren’t any vans going so early because there weren’t a lot of passengers. Usually, you have to pay just 20000 Rupiah (100 INR) per person for reaching Bromo. However, since we were alone, we had to hire the entire van for 325000 Rupiah (1600 INR ).

After an hour, we reached Bromo and here we took a room for 100000 Rupiah (500 INR) . We freshened up and then headed to Bromo on a bike (for two people).

Mt. Bromo is an inactive volcano and looked like some alien planet. You can climb the steps to the mountain to reach the top which can take about 30 minutes. There is a lot of dust flying around but once you reach the top, the view looks spellbinding.

We spent some time on the Bromo and then we headed back to our room. We also wanted to watch Bromo from afar and climb other peaks.

So, we hired two motorbike drivers to take us around. It cost us 225000 Rupiah (1100 INR) per person for the entire trip. And, they dropped us back at the Probolinggo bus stand so that we could head back to Jakarta.

So we climbed the mountain on the bikes and it got so damn cold that we were freezing by the time we returned. But it was so amazing. We watched Bromo from afar and it looked lovely. But that’s not all, we witnessed one of the gorgeous sunsets too.

trip jakarta bali

Mount Bromo to Surabaya to Yogyakarta

After having the time of our lives, we returned to Probolinggo. Then, we took a bus to Surabaya ( 30000 Rupiah – 150 INR per person ). We reached in 2-3 hours but we still had to reach Jakarta from here which was around 18-20 hours away. So, we took a bus to Yogyakarta for 138000 Rupiah (660 INR) per person.

Day 9 and 10: Yogyakarta to Kuningan to Jakarta to India

Yogyakarta to kuningan.

From here, things went a little downhill for us. We reached Yogyakarta early in the morning around 6 a.m. but Jakarta was still 12-14 hrs away.

So we were waiting for a bus to Bandung which would have ideally left us closer to Jakarta. However, since we were in a hurry, we took a bus to Kuningan ( 180000 Rupiah – 860 INR per person).

Now, Kuningan is a small town that is 3-4 hours away from Jakarta. Unfortunately, we confused it with Jakarta’s Kuningan. That was a huge mistake. By the time we reached Kuningan (3-4 hrs away from Jakarta), it was 1 a.m. Our flight was at 7 a.m. in the morning.

Kuningan to Jakarta to India

Somehow we got a local bus to Jakarta for 150000 Rupiah (720 INR) per person, but we reached only by 8 a.m. so we ended up missing our flight to KL.

Thankfully, we got another flight to KL leaving at 2 p.m. so we booked that and reached our destination (Additional cost of 4400 INR  per person which we could have saved 🙁 ).

trip jakarta bali

There were a lot of other mishaps even after reaching KL but let’s keep them for some other time.

Overall, the Indonesia trip was a memorable one and I learned from the blunders that we made. I hope that you learned something too and will now be able to plan a successful Indonesia itinerary for yourself.

An excellent train system links all the main cities on Java, including Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Solo, Surabaya, Probolinggo (for Mt Bromo) and Ketapang (for the ferry to Bali).  Trains are cheap, comfortable and air-conditioned, an ideal way to get around.  Indonesian trains run on narrow-gauge 3' 6" tracks, but are fast and usually punctual, with efficient computerised reservations.  The Indonesian for train is Kereta Api - literally fire carriage.

How to check train times & fares.

The easiest way to check times & fares is to use agency site en.tiket.com/kereta-api , see the advice in the how to buy tickets section below .

Alternatively, you can use the official Indonesian Railways site www.kai.id , but it's currently only in Indonesian (and you may find it 403 forbidden ).  If you click Reservasi you'll get onto their sales site booking.kai.id and can use the journey planner to check train times and fares.  Google's Chrome browser will translate anything you don't understand.

These online systems are for long-distance trains, they don't cover suburban trains around Jakarta or Surabaya, or the local trains to Merak or local trains between Yogyakarta & Solo.  The website for Jakarta commuter trains and Yogyakarta-Solo local trains is www.krl.co.id (Indonesian only).

How to buy tickets

Option 1, buy at booking.kai.id , only indonesian bank cards accepted.

booking.kai.id is the official Indonesian Railways (Kereta Api Indonesia or KAI) ticket sales website which has offered online booking since 2012.  However, it's of little use to overseas travellers as it's only in Indonesian and only accepts Indonesian credit cards.  Use options 2 or 3 instead.  At the time I write this it's also geo-blocked and only accessible if you use a VPN set to an Indonesian IP address (because hackers don't have VPNs , right?)

Option 2, buy at www.bookaway.com , overseas cards accepted

www.bookaway.com is a reliable western agency that enables online ordering of Indonesian train tickets for popular routes.

It offers the most popular trains & routes on Java, with instant confirmation, but not every train or route.  You can book in multiple currencies including £, €, $, Au$.  Naturally, they charge a booking fee.  Feedback welcome.

Booking opens around 6 weeks ahead .  Tickets can be bought up to and including the day of departure.

How to use bookaway.com :  Run an enquiry.  You can specify stations if you know them, for example Gambir Station to Tugu Yogyakarta , rather than searching in general terms from Jakarta to Yogyakarta as generic searches bring up all sorts of secondary trains to/from secondary stations.

In the search results, first look for the class you want:  EKS for Eksekutif, BIS for Business, EKO for Ekonomi.  Read more about classes .

Look closely at the specific departure & arrival stations, using the timetables on this page as a guide.  For example, if you searched from Jakarta to Yogyakarta instead of specifying stations, you'll see options from Gambir to Tugu Yogyakarta, from Pasar Senen to Lempuyangan and from Pasar Senen to Tugu Yogyakarta.  In this case, the best trains go from Gambir, and Yogyakarta (listed as Tugu Yogyakarta) is the main station in Yogya, Lempuyangan is a secondary station.

Then look at the letter between the class code and 'train', for example the 'H' in EKS H train. The letter is simply a price bucket code, select the cheapest price you can find for the class you want that brings up the train you want.

Option 3, buy at en.tiket.com/kereta-api , can also be used

en.tiket.com/kereta-api is a reliable Indonesian agency which connects to the Indonesian Railways (KAI) ticketing system to sell train tickets online for all routes and trains.  en.tiket.com/kereta-api can be used by overseas travellers to buy tickets or just check Indonesian train times & fares.  It'll work on your mobile, or you can download the Tiket app.  They charge a small booking fee.

Booking opens around 6 weeks ahead .  Tickets can be bought until the day before departure, but not on the day of travel.

For English, click the red & white Indonesian flag at top right and select English .  Then click Trains .

Before you start, make sure you have passport numbers and exact names for each passenger.  If you want them to get a text alert, have their mobile number handy too, or you can use your own contact number for all passengers.

Any passenger 3 or over counts as an adult.  Children under 3 travel free, but they don't get their own seat.

Which station to select in which city?

Jakarta:   Type Jakarta and select the Jakarta all stations option.  Jakartakota is the historic 1929 terminus that's now only used by local trains, station code JAKK.  Gambir is Jakarta's modern central station used by the best Eksekutif class trains to most destinations, station code GMR.  If trains from Gambir are full or the times don't suit you or you want to travel in Ekonomi class, try typing station code PSE and selecting Pasar Senen which is the second most important station in Jakarta and also pretty central.

Yogyakarta:   Type Yogya and select Yogyakarta or enter station code YK .

Solo (Surakarta):   Type Solo and select Solobalapan or enter station code SLO .

Surabaya:   Type Surabaya and select the Surabaya all stations option.  Surabaya Pasar Turi (SBI) is the station for travel to/from the Semerang & Jakarta direction and Surabaya Gubeng (SGU) is for travel to/from Solo, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Probolinggo or Ketapang (Banyuwangi).

Use the filter!   To simplify the long list of train/class/price level combinations in the search results , use the filter on the left to select only the class you want, let's say Eksekutif.

Which class to select?   KAI trains have 4 classes, Luxury Eksekutif, Eksekutif, Bisnis & Ekonomi.  Most trains just offer Eksekutif & Ekonomi, though some of the best trains are Eksekutif class only.  Eksekutif is the most popular choice for western visitors though Ekonomi class is perfectly acceptable.  Read more about classes .

Which price to select?   You should always select the cheapest price level shown for the train & class you want.

First-timers get confused here, so I'll explain:  You'll see each train listed multiple times, the same class on the same train may be repeated several times with different prices.

For example, you might see Jakarta to Yogyakarta on train 10 in Eksekutif class repeated 4 times with 4 different fares, Rp.490,000, Rp.510,000, Rp.550,000 and Rp.570,000. What's the difference, and which one should you select?

Answer:  There is no difference, you get exactly the same seats in the same carriages whichever price you pick, so always pick the cheapest.

What you're seeing here is a primitive attempt at airline-style dynamic pricing, with various 'price buckets' on offer.  An airline would of course only show you one price, the cheapest that's available, with all the other higher-priced fare buckets hidden away behind the scenes.  But Indonesian railways rather unhelpfully show you all the possible price buckets, not just the cheapest.

Which seat to select?   See the Travel Tips section for advice on choosing a seat .

Credit card rejection:  Important!

At the payment stage, try using your non-Indonesian credit card - it may or may not work.

If it's declined, don't worry.  Some users report that they send you a Whatsapp message with a link to make payment.  Feedback appreciated !

Or use the online chat to ask how to proceed.  They may send you a link to pay.  Or they may tell you to email them a photo of your credit card & passport both in the same photo (but do not include the back of your card or tell them the card's CVV security code), and they will then reply usually quite promptly with confirmation that they have white-listed your credit card.  You will need to start the booking process again from scratch, but once white-listed online booking is a breeze however many tickets you want.

Booking confirmation :  After payment you'll be sent an email with a printable booking confirmation attached.  This has an alphanumeric booking code and a QR barcode.  Print this out and take it with you.  If you can't access a printer, don't worry as the alphanumeric Indonesian Railways booking reference is all you need to print a boarding pass at the station.

You still need a boarding pass:   You cannot board the train with the Tiket.com confirmation, you must get a boarding pass at the station.  Getting the boarding pass at the station is easy, read the advice below about boarding passes .

Feedback if you use en.tiket.com/kereta-api is always welcome.

Option 3, buy tickets at Indomaret convenience store s

Option 4, buy tickets at the station.

It's not usually difficult to buy tickets at the station a day or two before departure or even on the day of travel, although trains are busy so be prepared to travel in another class or train if your first choice is fully-booked.

Busy periods:   There are certain times of year when trains get fully booked many weeks ahead so early online booking is a must.  These include the period around Chinese new year and especially the Islamic national holiday of Idul Fitri (Eid) at the end of Ramadan.

Remember to take your passport .  If you're buying more than one ticket you'll need the passport number for each passenger.

Fill out an order form first.   At most stations you'll find a desk with pens and blank booking forms near the ticket windows.  Fill in a form with your required journey, date, class, number of passengers and passenger names & passport numbers.  This will save time at the ticket window, indeed they may send you away if you haven't filled one out.

Pick the right ticket window.   These words above each ticket window may help you find the right one:

Loket = ticket counter

Pemesanan = Ticket booking = ticket window, often followed by the classes sold at that window..

Pembatalan, pengembalian = window for cancellations & refunds.

Penujalan haru ini (Go Show) or Penjualan langsung (Go Show) = tickets for today including Go Show tickets.  Go Show tickets are discounted tickets only sold within 2 hours of train departure, if seats remain available.

Tutup = closed!

Some major stations have separate booking windows for long-distance tickets.  At Surabaya Gubeng there's a reservation centre for long-distance tickets on the left side of the station, separate from the short-distance ticket windows near the entrance to the platforms.  Jakarta Pasar Senen has a reservations centre for long-distance tickets closest to where you drive or walk into the station driveway.

Self-service machines.   Major stations may also have one or more self-service touch-screen ticket machines.  They may only be in Indonesian, but they are easy enough to use as the process is straightforward and almost identical to using the touch-screen terminals in Indomaret convenience stores - so if you read option 4 below you'll know how to use the machines at stations too.  You pay with rupiah banknotes.

Important :  Orange boarding pass es

At all the most important stations such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Solo, Bandung, Semarang, Purwokerto, Jember, Malan & Ketapang (Banyuwangi Baru), a boarding pass system has operated since 2016.

If you buy a ticket online at Tiket.com, Bookaway.com or from an Indomaret mini-market or a travel agency , you'll get a booking reference or QR barcode. You cannot board the train with this booking confirmation, you must use it to get an orange boarding pass at one of the self-service check-in counters at least 10 minutes before departure.

If you buy at a station more than 3 days before departure , they'll give you a blue ticket.  You cannot board the train with the blue ticket, you must use it to get an orange boarding pass at one of the self-service check-in counters at least 10 minutes before departure.

If you buy at a station less than 3 days before departure , they'll give you the orange boarding pass and you can board the train.

To get a boarding pass , go to one of the touch-screen computer terminals marked Check-in counter at the station entrance and either scan the barcode or type in the booking reference.  Your booking will appear on the screen.  Touch print and the paper roller printer will print your boarding passes.  No ID is needed.  You can do this at any time between several days before departure right up until a few minutes before departure.  Originally, you could only print off a boarding pass at the station where your journey starts, now you can print them off for any journey at any station.

ID check before accessing the platforms:   You will be asked to show the boarding pass and your passport at the ID check desk at the entrance to the platforms, it's all part of a drive to eliminate ticket scalping.

At smaller stations where they have not introduced the boarding pass system, you can board the train with the blue ticket.

On board Indonesian trains

Eksekutif, bisnis & ekonomi class.

Eksekutif class (EKS) is air-conditioned with individual reclining seats, usually reclining to a good 30 degrees, arranged 2+2 across the car width.  Seats normally face forwards, but can be rotated to face either direction by depressing the foot pedal on the aisle side.  There's a small drinks table on the wall by each pair of seats with two power sockets underneath, European 2-pin type.  The best trains are Eksekutif class only.

A handful of the very best trains have Eksekutif Luxury class with individual flatbed seats in addition to normal Eksekutif class seats.

Bisnis class (BIS) is air-conditioned with non-reclining padded seats, 2+2 across the car width.  Seats normally face forwards, but have a walkover back that can be pulled from one side of the seat bottom to the other so the seat can face either way.  There's a small drinks table on the wall by each pair of seats with two power sockets underneath, European 2-pin type.  Bisnis class is a perfectly acceptable alternative if Eksekutif class is fully booked or if you want to save money.  Bisnis class is getting rare, available on relatively few trains.

Ekonomi class (EKO) is air-conditioned with non-reclining padded seats, usually 2+3 across the car width.  Seats are usually arranged in face-to face bays of 4 or 6  There's usually a small drinks table on the wall by each pair of seats with two power sockets underneath, European 2-pin type.  Many trains are Ekonomi class only, and it's perfectly safe and comfortable to use Ekonomi class trains if the timings suit you better, or if other classes or trains are full.  A few Ekonomi trains are now equipped with modern cars with 2+2 reclining seats, notably on the Jakarta-Semarang-Surabaya route.  These are not dissimilar to Eksekutif class but with significantly less legroom.

Eksekutif Luxury classes

In addition to normal Eksekutif class cars, three types of Eksekutif Luxury Class are now available on a few key trains, usually just one luxury car per train.

Eksekutif Luxury

This is available on the Argo Dwipangga between Jakarta Gambir, Yogyakarta & Solo.  A cut above the normal Eksekutif class seats, these luxurious seats have leg-rests and a significant recline, although with a 140 degree recline they don't go completely flat.  They are arranged 2+1 across the car width, instead of 2+2 as in normal Eksekutif class.  A blanket is provided, although not sheets.   Courtesy of www.discoverbyrail.com , click the images for larger photos.

Eksekutif Luxury Sleeper

This is available on the Argo Bromo Anggrek & Sembrani between Jakarta Gambir & Surabaya.  Introduced in 2018, these are flatbed seats like you find in business class on an airline, with a 170 degree power-recline with surround walls for privacy and individual flat-screen TV entertainment.  They are arranged 1+1 across the car width.  Headphones, bottled water and a blanket are provided, although not sheets.  The fare includes a complimentary packed meal and soft drinks, served by a hostess.  Courtesy of www.discoverbyrail.com , click the images for larger photos.

Eksekutif Luxury Compartment Suites , see video guide

This is the latest luxury offering, only available between Jakarta Gambir, Yogyakarta & Surabaya on the Argo Semeru & Bima .  It consists of fully-enclosed private compartments either side of a corridor running down the centre of the car, reminiscent of Singapore Airlines or Emirates first class suites.  In the middle of each private room in glorious isolation is a flatbed seat with a 170 degree recline, lightweight sleeping bag provided.  The fare includes a complimentary meal and soft drinks, served by a hostess.  I can't help feeling that someone with an airline background has tried to reinvent the railway sleeping-car and failed, never having seen one!  Courtesy of Nonstopeurotrip , click the images for larger photos.  See video guide .

Luggage allowance 20 Kg

Luggage arrangements on Indonesian trains are simple:  You take your bags with you onto the train, and stick them on the overhead racks above your seat.  These take anything up to backpack or medium suitcase size, see the photo below.  If you have larger cases or you have difficulty lifting your bags up, you can put your bags in the gap behind the rearmost seats at the rear of the carriage in Eksekutif or Bisnis class cars, see the photos below.

Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) introduced a 20 Kg luggage allowance per person in all classes in 2016.  KAI are reasonably serious about the 20 Kg limit, and luggage may be weighed before boarding if it looks heavier than 20 Kg.

If you have more than 20 Kg of luggage, don't worry.  You can take up to 40 Kg per person if you pay an excess baggage fee at the departures gate.  The cost is Rp 10,000 ($0.68) per excess Kg in Eksekutif class, Rp 6,000 in Bisnis class, Rp 2,000 in Ekonomi.  Indeed, at Jakarta Gambir you may find a little desk with electronic scales next to the departure gate for payment of excess luggage fees.

KAI apply the 20 Kg per person limit to the total of all passengers travelling together, so if there are two of you and one has a 15 Kg bag and the other 25 Kg, that's fine as you're within the 20 Kg x 2 = 40 Kg limit in total.  They also seem to apply the 20 Kg limit to your main bags, without worrying too much about handbags or the 6 Kg daypack you're wearing on your back.

In theory KAI also have a maximum size limit for luggage and you may see airline-style does your bag fit in here displays near the departure gate, 70cm x 48cm x 30cm.  Fortunately they don't seem to bother with this, as long as you stay within the 20Kg limit.  So there is absolutely no problem taking backpacks or suitcases onto the train, indeed I have travelled with people who took two large 23 Kg hard-sided suitcases that were well beyond KAI's theoretical size limit and we were never stopped or questioned about our luggage on any journey.  Although of course they may simply go easy on overseas visitors!

Food & drink

Every long-distance train has a catering car in the centre of the train with a counter selling tea, coffee, bottled water, soft drinks, crisps and various types of microwaveable tray meals, typically with rice and chicken (chicken = ayam ) or fried rice (nasi goreng) and meatballs (bakso) .  The catering car usually has one or two bays of seats with tables.

However, there's no need to visit the catering car as a refreshment trolley passes up and down the train so you can buy all of these things at your seat.  Orders for tray meals may be taken and delivered later once microwaved back at base.  A typical tray meal costs around Rp 30,000, about $2.50.  Go for it, they're tastier than they look!

You are of course free to take your own food and drink.

Travel tips

Toilets:   All cars have one or two toilets, sometimes basic but usually reasonably clean and I have yet to find any KAI toilet without toilet roll, soap & water.  The most modern cars have two western-style toilets or one western and one squat toilet.  Only the oldest cars have two squat toilets.

Smoking is not allowed anywhere on a KAI train, although you can smoke briefly on the platform at station stops.  As the on-train announcements warn, "The passenger who carry smoke onto the train, we will carry off you at the next station...".

Car numbers:   Cars are numbered by class, usually starting from the front.  So car 1 is usually the first car behind the locomotive, car 8 at the rear.  If the train has two or more classes, numbers are repeated in each class, with an Eksekutif car 1, 2 & 3 and a Bisnis car 1, 2 & 3.  So don't mistakenly board Bisnis car 1 if your seat is in Eksekutif car 1.

Seat numbering:   Seat numbering is similar to planes, with the rows numbered typically from 1 to 13 in Eksekutif or 1 to 17 in Bisnis and the seats in each row lettered A, B, C, D across the car width, where A and D are the window seats and the aisle is between seats B and C.

In most Eksekutif cars there are a couple of exceptions to this rule.  In the first & last rows the seats are reduced to 2+1 or 1+2 across the car width to make space for the access door and in these rows seat B (where seats shown are B, C & D) or seat C (where seats shown are A, B & C) is a 'solo' seat that is both window & aisle.

Choosing a seat:   If you book online at Tiket.com or use a self-service ticket machine or Indomaret ticket terminal you can choose an exact seat from a highly-simplified seating plan, see the picture below.  Seat numbers appear if you hover over a seat.  The plan doesn't show the aisle, this is between seats B and C.  Remember that A and D are normally the window seats on either side.

Remember that Eksekutif class cars typically have 13 rows of seats and Bisnis class 17 rows.  The plan you see may not show all the rows, only those seats & rows which are available to book online (although the example below does show all rows 1-13).  So if you only see rows 7 to 11 on the plan, it doesn't mean rows 1-6 and 12-13 don't exist, only that they are not bookable.  Also note that you cannot tell whether row 1 or row 13 will be at the front as the car could run either way round, although all seats will be turned to face forwards.

I recommend choosing mid-car seats, avoiding rows 1-2 in any class, rows 12-13 in Eksekutif or 16-17 in Bisnis, as the ride is smoother on any train in mid-car and you get a better view of the scenery if you're not right up close to the forward bulkhead and (in Eksekutif class) the distracting bulkhead TV screen.

Jakarta Soekarno–Hatta airport train

A rail link from Jakarta's Soekarno–Hatta International airport to BNI City (formerly Sudirman Baru) station in central Jakarta opened in December 2017, now extended to Manggarai station.  Trains now run every 30 minutes from around 05:00 until around 23:00.  The fare is 70,000 rupiah ($5) and the journey takes 55 minutes from the airport to BNI City.

For times, fares & tickets, see reservation.railink.co.id .

Jakarta to Semarang & Surabaya

A range of trains links Jakarta with Surabaya, but the best train is the Argo Bromo Anggrek with Eksekutif Luxury & Eksekutif classes, clean, modern and powerfully air-conditioned.  It has comfortable reclining seats with footrests and a catering car.  There is both a daytime service and a time-effective overnight service.  The overnight train doesn't have sleepers (these disappeared from Indonesian trains in the 1990s), but the Eksekutif Luxury class car (shown as Lux in the timetable below) has flatbed seats that go completely flat, blanket provided.

Jakarta to Surabaya is 725 km, 450 miles.

Children under 3 travel free, no ticket required.  Passengers 3 and over count as adults.

Prices vary significantly, with cheaper fares if you pre-book, for example Eksekutif class from 400,000 rupiah.

How to buy tickets:   At the station , at Indomaret minimarkets or online at Tiket.com as shown here .

A journey on the Argo Bromo Anggrek

The Argo Bromo Anggrek (the Bromo Orchid ) is Indonesia's premier train, linking Java's two largest cities in 9 hours at a creditable average speed of 80 km/h (50mph) start to stop on its narrow gauge tracks.  The train keeps up a relentless 110 km/h (75 mph) between the few stops it makes, hooting ceaselessly at each level crossing, speeding non-stop through most smaller stations on its 9 hour dash - the same journey would take 15 hours by road.  As you pass through each station, look for the station master in his red and gold hat, standing to attention outside his office watching the train pass through.  The countryside is largely flat, rice paddies, villages, towns, palms and the occasional mosque.  After Semarang there's a brief stretch where the train skirts the Java Sea, and around Cirebon you'll see the vast shadow of Mt Cereme in the distance to the south, its summit usually hidden by cloud.  It's an active volcano and the highest point in west Java.

Jakarta to Bandung

Option 1, by regular train, city centre to city centre, option 2, by 350km/h high-speed train called whoosh.

A new high-speed line opened on 17 October 2023, linking Jakarta with Bandung at up to 350 km/h (217 mph) and taking just 46 minutes.

The trains have economy, business and VIP class.

The high-speed trains are operated by a company called Whoosh , separate from KAI Indonesian Railways.  For tickets and info see ticket.kcic.co.id .

The bad news is that the standard-gauge stations are not in the city centre:  Jakarta's Halim station is a 14 km 48-minute taxi ride from Gambir station, see location map and Bandung's Tegalluar station is a 23 km 52-minute taxi ride from Bandung's centrally-located normal station, see location map ).  You might consider a 3h10 journey on the regular trains more convenient, cheaper and not that much slower if you want the city centres as most tourists do!

The high-speed trains stop at Padalarang about 12 minutes before arriving at Tegalluar, a feeder train runs from Padalarang to Bandung station in downtown Bandung.

Jakarta to Yogyakarta & Solo

Jakarta may be Java's capital, but Yogyakarta, known locally at Yogya, is its heart.  Solo, also known as Surakarta, is Yogya's long-standing rival an hour to the east.  Both cities should feature on any sensible trip to Java.  It's easy to travel from Jakarta to Yogya or Solo by comfortable air-conditioned train, indeed it's the best way.

Jakarta to Yogyakarta is 522 km, 326 miles.

A journey on the Argo Dwipangga

Approaching Cirebon you'll see the vast shadow of Mt Cereme in the distance to the south, its summit usually hidden by cloud.  It's an active volcano and the highest point in west Java.  The nicest part of the journey from Jakarta to Yogya or Solo comes beyond Cirebon, where the train slows right down and snakes through gentle hills, past rice paddies nestling in narrow valleys amongst the jungle.

Watch the video

Yogyakarta to solo.

These two Javan cities are only an hour apart by train.  Both are key stops on the tourist trail, Yogya is a must-see and Solo is well worth visiting.  You can see Solo as a day trip from Yogyakarta by train if you like.  There are two options for travel between Yogya & Solo:

Option 1, mainline express trains:   These take less than an hour between the two cities, but must be reserved in advance, they are less frequent and cost significantly more than the KAI Commuter local trains.  Check times & buy online at Ticket.com as shown above .

Option 2, KAI Commuter local trains:   This is the easiest option.  Comfortable air-conditioned electric commuter trains link Yogyakarta & Solo every hour or two through the day, journey time 1h10.

The fare is only Rp 8,000, less than $1, but there are no simple one-trip tickets, you have to buy a rechargeable Kereta API kommuter card for Rp 30,000 and load it with value in multiples of Rp 10,000.  So in practice your first ride costs Rp 40,000 and your second 10,000.  Isn't smartcard technology wonderful?  The same smartcard can be used for other KAI commuter trains, such as those around Jakarta.

These electric trains took over from the Prameks diesel trains in 2021 and operation was handed to KAI Commuter.

You can check times at the KAI Commuter website, commuterline.id/perjalanan-krl/jadwal-kereta ( please let me know if that link stops working).  It's in Indonesia, but easy enough to understand:

For Yogyakarta to Solo , select Yogyakarta as the starting station, enter a timeframe (00:00 to 23:00 if you like) and click Lihat .  All departures shown in red go to Solo's main Solobalapan station, whether the final destination is shown as Solo or Palur.

For Solo to Yogyakarta , select Solo as the starting station, enter a timeframe and click Lihat .  You want a departure shown as going to Yogyakarta, departures to Palur head in the opposite direction.  Solobalapan is Solo's main station.

Tickets cannot be booked in advance, just buy at the station.  Until 2021, the old Prameks service used to have its own dedicated ticket windows, feedback on the new arrangements or photos of these new trains would be appreciated.

Bandung - Yogyakarta - Solo - Surabaya

Trains 115 & 116 are the Wijayakusuma , Eksekutif & Ekonomi classes, air-conditioned.

A journey on the Ranggajati

Surabaya - probolinggo - ketapang (for bali).

The railway linking Surabaya with Probolinggo (the usual jumping-off point for Mt Bromo ) and Ketapang (the ferry terminal for Bali) is a treat, snaking through eastern Java's rice fields and jungle.  For the ferry connections to Bali, see the next section .  Also see the video below .

Shaded = recommended trains.

Banyuwangi Baru station was renamed Ketapang in 2020, station code KTG.

Trains 111 & 112 are the Ranggajati , Eksekutif & Bisnis class, runs to/from Solo & Yogyakarta.

Trains 115 & 116 are the Wijayakusuma , Eksekutif & Ekonomi class, all air-conditioned, recommended.

Trains 183 & 184 are the Mutiara Timur (Eastern Pearl) , Eksekutif & Ekonomi class, all air-conditioned, sadly suspended post-pandemic .

Trains 237 & 238 are the Blambangan Ekspres , Eksekutif & Ekonomi class, all air-conditioned.

Trains 287 & 288 are the Sri Tanjung , Ekonomi class only, air-conditioned.

Trains 317 & 318 are the Probowangi , Ekonomi class only, air-conditioned.

Fare:   Surabaya to Ketapang costs around 105,000 rupiah (£8 or $13) in Eksekutif, 75,000 rupiah (£6 or $9) in Bisnis.

A journey to Ketapang

Java to bali by train & ferry.

It's safe, comfortable, cheap and easy to arrange.  The train needs a reservation, but you can buy the ferry ticket at the ferry terminal and just find a bus or taxi on arrival at Gilimanuk.  With great scenery on the train ride through eastern Java, this is the best way to travel from cities on Java to anywhere on Bali.

Surabaya & Probolinggo ► Bali

Step 1, take a comfortable air-conditioned train from Surabaya or Probolinggo to Ketapang, see the timetable above .

There used to be a convenient daytime express with Eksekutif class called the Mutiara Timur ( Eastern Pearl) leaving Surabaya Gubeng at 09:00 and arriving Ketapang at 15:25, but this did not resume post-pandemic, so currently you'll need to use one of the two ekonomi-class trains shown in the timetable above - but these are fine.  There's great scenery as the train curves around the rice fields and jungles of eastern Java.

You can also travel time-effectively overnight, leaving Surabaya Gubeng at 22:44 arriving Ketapang 04:40, or at leaving Surabaya Gubeng at 23:35 and arriving at Ketapang at 05:45.  Both those trains have Eksekutif & Ekonomi class, but they only have reclining seats, no sleepers.

Step 2, take a ferry from Ketapang to Gilimanuk.

Ketapang railway station is just 350m from Ketapang ferry terminal, a 5 minute walk, see walking map .

Walk out of Ketapang station exit and look for the main station approach road leading directly away from the station.  It's across the forecourt in front of you, a little to the right.  Walk 150m down this station approach road to the busy main road, turn right and walk another 150m, and Ketapang ferry terminal is on your left on the other side of the road.

The passenger entrance is marked Passengers .  Walk down the narrow retail passage, and buy a prepaid smartcard where you see these sold, then add a ferry ticket to it at the little ticket office at the end.  You must fill in a little paper slip for each passenger with name, age, sex, passport number and address and take them to the ticket office to buy ferry tickets.  You then use the smartcard ticket to go through one of the two turnstiles, sliding your luggage underneath.  You can then catch the next available ferry.

Ferries sail from Ketapang to Gilimanuk every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, the crossing takes about 45 minutes.  The fare is 9,650 rupiah for an adult foot passenger, less than $1.

The main ferry operator website is www.indonesiaferry.co.id , in Indonesian only.  You usually board the ferry via the vehicle ramp onto the semi-open car deck, you climb stairs to the passenger deck above where you'll find shaded seats, toilets, and a kiosk selling drinks and snacks.  If you can't get your bags up the stairs, leave them on the car deck against the side.

If you arrive at Ketapang by train at 12:30 you can easily be on a ferry leaving at 13:15 arriving at Gilimanuk on Bali at 15:00 Bali time - remember that Bali is one hour ahead of Java.

If you arrive at Ketapang by train at 20:05 you can be on a ferry leaving at 21:00 and arriving in Gilimanuk on Bali at 22:45 Bali time.

Step 3, take a bus from Gilimanuk to Denpasar or use a taxi.

Gilimanuk Bus Terminal is right outside the ferry terminal, just walk out of the ferry terminal exit onto the road and turn right.

Local buses link the ferry terminal at Gilimanuk with Denpasar's Mengwi bus terminal, distance 125 km or 78 miles, journey time 3 hours, fare around 60,000 rupiah (£4 or $5).  You'll need to change at Denpasar Mengwi bus terminal for local buses to places like Ubud, Bali's cultural and tourist capital - there are no direct buses from Gilimanuk. Long-distances buses were moved from the former Ubung bus station to the new Mengwi bus terminal in 2017.  Feedback appreciated .

Alternatively you can take a taxi direct to your destination on Bali, which will be a lot quicker but more expensive.  You're looking at 750,000 rupiah ($57) for a private taxi from Gilimanuk to Ubud, for example.  Or your hotel on Bali may also be able to arrange a transfer from Gilimanuk.  Feedback appreciated .

Bali ► Probolinggo & Surabaya

Step 1, travel to Gilimanuk on the western tip of Bali by bus, taxi or private transfer.

Regular local buses link Denpasar's Mengwi bus terminal with Gilimanuk bus terminal, 125 km, journey time about 3½ hours, fare around Rp 60,000 (£4 or $5).  Long-distances buses were moved from the former Ubung bus station to the new Mengwi bus terminal in 2017.  In Gilimanuk the bus terminal is right next to the ferry terminal.  Starting in somewhere like Ubud, you'll need to take a local bus to Denpasar first.

A taxi direct from Ubud to Gilimanuk will take about 3½ hours and cost around Rp 750,000 ($57), not too bad if there are two or three of you to share the cost.  Your hotel may be able to arrange a private transfer.

Step 2, take a ferry from Gilimanuk on Bali to Ketapang on Java, ferries sail every 15 minutes 24/7, crossing time 45 minutes.

The ticket office is at the passenger entrance to Gilimanuk ferry terminal.  You must fill in a little paper slip for each passenger with name, age, sex, passport number and address and present them at the ticket office to buy ferry tickets.  You then use the smartcard ticket to go through one of the two turnstiles, sliding your luggage underneath.  You walk up the stairs and over the walkway to the next available ferry.  Staff will tell you which that is.

The fare is 9,650 rupiah for an adult foot passenger, less than $1.  The ferry operator website is www.indonesiaferry.co.id , in Indonesian only.

On arrival at Ketapang, walk off the ferry and out of the ferry terminal following the exit signs.  Turn right onto the main road and walk 150m.  Turn left and walk another 150m up the station approach road to Ketapang station (formerly known as Banyuwangi Baru), there's a blue and white sign to the station at the road junction.  See walking map .

Remember that Java time is 1 hour behind Bali time.

Step 3, take a train from Ketapang to Probolinggo or Surabaya Gubeng, see the train timetable above .

Depending where you're starting on Bali, if you left early enough you might make the 11:30 Wijayakusuma to Probolinggo & Surabaya, arriving late afternoon.  Otherwise there's the mid-afternoon Ekonomi class Probowangi arriving in Surabaya in the evening, see the timetable above .

Alternatively, you might prefer to travel from your starting point on Bali to Gilimanuk and across on the ferry to Ketapang on day 1 at your leisure, stay overnight in Ketapang then take a train to Surabaya next morning.  You'll find more places to stay in Ketapang than in Gilimanuk, although the choice is still limited.  For something reasonably nice try the Ketapang Indah Hotel , 1.7 miles south of the ferry terminal, with rooms set in gardens, a good swimming pool, free WiFi, bar & restaurant.

There's also a night train leaving Ketapang at 19:30 but it arrives at Surabaya Gubeng at silly o'clock.  But it's an option, if you've a hotel room waiitng!

Book the train online at en.tiket.com/kereta-api following the advice here , buy at the station in Ketapang, or buy at an Indomaret convenience store including many on Bali.

In Denpasar, the Indonesian railway website lists the 'Rama Duta Bali' agency as selling train tickets, at Jl.Diponogoro Pertokoan Gontong Biru, No.150 Blok B No.04, Denpasar, Bali.

Java to Bali in pictures

Java to sumatra by train & ferry.

It's easy to travel between Java and Sumatra by train  & ferry, it's incredibly cheap, safe, a real experience, and no prior reservation or planning is necessary.

You take a train the 151 km from Jakarta to the port of Merak from where ferries sail to Bakauheni on the southern tip of Sumatra every 20 minutes around the clock taking between 90 & 120 minutes.  A local bus or taxi will then take you the 94 km from Bakauheni to the main southern Sumatra town of Bandar Lampung in about 90 minutes.  Once in Bandar Lampung, there's a twice-daily train to Palembang .  Here are the details, feedback would be appreciated .

Jakarta ► Bandar Lampung (Sumatra)

Step 1, travel from Jakarta's Tanah Abeng station to Rangkasbitung by air-conditioned electric suburban train.

These run every hour through the day, increasing to half-hourly at busy times.  The fare is Rp 8,000, less than $1.  No prior reservation is necessary, just turn up, buy a ticket to Rangkasbitung (they can't sell tickets to Merak) and hop on the next train.

You can check times at the KAI Commuter website commuterline.id/perjalanan-krl/jadwal-kereta (please let me know if that stops working).

Step 2, travel from Rangkasbitung to Merak by air-conditioned local train, these run every few hours, Ekonomi class only.

The fare is Rp 3,000, again no prior reservation is necessary, buy a ticket at Rangkasbitung station and hop on the next train.

You can check train times using Google, just search for 'Rangkasbitung  to Merak' and select public transport.  You can also check them using the KAI Access app.

Step 3, take a ferry from Merak to Bakauheni on Sumatra.

In Merak, the ferry terminal is just 100m from the station, see walking map .

Ferries sail every 15-20 minutes around the clock, the crossing takes around 2 hours.  The foot passenger fare is around 14,000 Rupiah, around $1, see www.indonesiaferry.co.id .   Just turn up & buy a ticket at the port, no reservation necessary.

Here's a summary timetable:

Bandar Lampung (Sumatra) ► Jakarta

Step 1, take a bus from Bandar Lampung to Bakauheni ferry terminal.

The 94 km (59 mile) journey takes 90 minutes by bus or taxi and there's always lots of local transport available.  A bus from Bandar Lampung's Rajabasa bus station to Bakauheni costs around Rp 20,000, roughly $2.  An angkot shared taxi will cost around Rp 35,000 ($3).

Ferries sail every 20 minutes, 24 hours a day, the crossing takes between 1h30 & 2 hours.  The foot passenger fare is around 12,000 Rupiah, less than $2, see www.indonesiaferry.co.id .   Just turn up & buy a ticket at the port, no reservation necessary.

Step 3, travel from Merak to Rangkasbitung by air-conditioned local train, these run every few hours, Ekonomi class only.

You can check train times using Google, just search for 'Merak to Rangkasbitung' and select public transport.  You can also check times using the KAI Access app.

The fare is Rp 3,000, again no prior reservation is necessary, buy a ticket at the station and hop on the next train, no reservation needed.

Step 4, travel from Rangkasbitung to Jakarta's Tanah Abeng station by air-conditioned electric suburban train.

These run every hour through the day, increasing to half-hourly at busy times.  The fare is Rp 8,000, less than $1.  No prior reservation is necessary, just turn up, buy a ticket and hop on the next train.

Here is a Sumatra to Jakarta summary timetable:

Train & bus travel on Sumatra

There are a handful of train services in Sumatra, but no system covering the whole island.  See map of Sumatra .  There's a daily train to Palembang from Bandar Lampung, although just to confuse you the station at Bandar Lampung is known as Tanjungkarang , its former name, even though it's been known as Bandar Lampung since 1983 - and Palembang station is usually referred to as Kertapati .  See the timetable below.  You can travel by bus from Palembang to Padang.  It's 900km, one bus daily, probably overnight, but no information is available on the bus times.

Trains S11 S12 = comfortable Ekonomi class seats, air-conditioned.

Borneo , Sulawesi & Papua

Ferries between java and borneo.

Ferries run by www.pelni.co.id link Tanjong Priok (near Jakarta) with Pontianak on Borneo, also Semarang (Java) with Ketapang, Kumai & Sampit (Borneo), and Surabaya (Java) with Sampit, Kumai or Batulicin (Borneo), with each route operating on a handful of dates each month, see www.pelni.co.id .  Here is a Pelni ferry route map, dating from 2006 but still useful today:  upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ commons/a/a6/Pelni_Schifffahrtsnetz_2006.png .

Ferries between Java and Sulawesi, Java & Papua

Ferries run by www.pelni.co.id link various ports on Java with various ports on Sulawesi and Papua, see www.pelni.co.id .  This Pelni ferry route map dates from 2006 but is still useful today:  upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ commons/a/a6/Pelni_Schifffahrtsnetz_2006.png .

Singapore to Jakarta by ferry

You can travel between Singapore and Jakarta by PELNI ferry, with a change of ferry at Pulau Batam, an Indonesian island just off Singapore.  The service operates once a week.  This Penli ferry route map may be useful, even if outdated!  It's also possible to by-pass Singapore and travel by direct ferry between Pulau Batam and Johor Bahru in Malaysia, from where trains run to Kuala Lumpur.

Singapore ► Jakarta

Step 1, take a local ferry from Singapore to Pulau Batam, an Indonesian island just off Singapore.

Ferries shuttle regularly from Singapore Harbour Front terminal to Pulau Batam, journey time is around 45 minutes, fare S$29 (£15 or $23) one-way.

There are several operators on this route, see www.sindoferry.com.sg or www.batamfast.com .  You can also arrange tickets through ferry agency www.wowgetaways.com/ferry.html .

There is also a regular hourly ferry from Johor Bahru in Malaysia to Pula Batam running 07:30-18:30, journey time 90 minutes, fare 69 Ringgit one-way, see www.batam-island-info.com/stulang-laut-ferry-terminal .

Once on Batam, transfer from the Sekupang ferry terminal to Batu Ampar ferry terminal by taxi or cheap but infrequent trans-Batam bus.

Step 2, sail from Pulau Batam to Jakarta on Java by weekly Pelni ferry.

The ferry m/v Kelud usually sails from Pulau Batam's Batu Ampar ferry terminal on Wednesdays at 15:00, arriving Tanjung Priok (Jakarta) at 15:30 next day.

The schedule can vary.  Tanjung Priok is a ferry port 13 km north of central Jakarta.  You should be at the port at least 2h before the scheduled ferry departure.

Fares start at USD 24 in ekonomi, USD 41 in klas 2B and rise to  USD 76 in klas 1A.  Ekonomi class = deck space.  Klas 2B = berth in 8-bed youth hostel-style cabins.  Klas 1B = berths in 4-berth cabins.  Klas 1A = berths in 2-berth cabins with shower & toilet.  Feedback appreciated .

The ferry company is Pelni, short for PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia, a state-owned ferry company.

You can check times for this ferry (but not book, if you're non-Indonesian) at www.easybook.com .  Select Ferry ticket then book from Pelabuhan Batu Ampar to Jakarta .  Make sure you are looking on the right day of the week.  You can also check dates at www.pelni.co.id .

Foreigners can only book Pelni tickets in person at a Pelni office or at nearby local travel agencies with perhaps 15% commission on top, or if all else fails, at the port, and only within 3 days of sailing date.  However, there is usually plenty of space.

There are plenty of buses between Tanjung Priok and central Jakarta, these buses run 24h/7.

Jakarta ► Singapore

Step 1, sail from Jakarta to Pulau Batam by weekly Pelni ferry.

The ferry m/v Kelud usually sails from Tanjung Priok (the ferry port 13 km north of Jakarta) on Thursday or Friday nights at 23:59, arriving Pulau Batam Batu Ampar ferry terminal at 05:30 on Saturday or Sunday, though the schedule can vary.  You should be at the port at least 2h before the scheduled ferry departure.

Fares start at USD 24 in ekonomi, USD 41 in klas 2B and rise to  USD 76 in klas 1A.  Ekonomi class = deck space in shared rooms.  Klas 2B = berth in 8-bed youth hostel-style cabins.  Klas 1A = berths in more private cabins.  Feedback appreciated .

The ferry company is Pelni, short for PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia , a state-owned ferry company.

You can check times for this ferry (but not book, unless you're Indonesian) at www.easybook.com .  Select Ferry ticket then book from Jakarta to Pelabuhan Batu Ampar .  Make sure you are looking on the right day of the week.  You can also check dates at www.pelni.co.id .

Foreigners can only book Pelni tickets in person at the Pelni office at Jakarta Tanjung Priok port, and only within 3 days of sailing date.  However, there is usually plenty of space.  You'll need to take a taxi the 13km out of central Jakarta to buy the tickets a day or two before sailing day.

Once on Batam, transfer from the Batu Ampar ferry terminal to the Sekupang ferry terminal by taxi or cheap but infrequent trans-Batam bus.

Step 2, sail from Batam to Singapore.

Once on Pula Batam, ferries shuttle to Singapore Harbour Front regularly, journey time around 45 minutes, fare S$29 (£15 or $23) one-way.  There are several operators on this route, see www.sindoferry.com.sg or www.batamfast.com .  You can also arrange tickets through www.wowgetaways.com/ferry.html .

There is also a regular hourly ferry from Pulau Batam to Johor Bahru in Malaysia running 07:30-18:30, journey time 90 minutes, fare 69 Ringgit one-way, see www.batam-island-info.com/stulang-laut-ferry-terminal .

Ferry fares & accommodation

The fare from Pulau Batam to Tanjung Priok (Jakarta) or vice versa is:

999,000 Rupiah (£76 or $118) with a bed in a 1st class cabin with 2 beds and en suite shower & toilet, the fare includes 3 meals a day in the buffet restaurant.  For sole occupancy you must pay for two tickets to get both beds.  Soap, towels & toilet paper may not be provided, so take your own.

556,000 rupiah (£43 or $66) with a bed in a shared 2nd class cabin with 4 or 6 beds, also including 3 meals a day in the buffet restaurant

There are also 3rd class dormitories, meals not included.

The 14,716-ton m/v Kelud was built in 1998 and has a restaurant, and cafeteria.  You'll also find other ferries from Batam to Belawan on Sumatra, and frequent ferries to Bintan (another Indonesian island not far from Singapore) from where there are yet more ferries to Java.  Watch the video, a voyage to Java on the MV Kelud .

How to buy ferry tickets

Option 1:   Foreigners can book Pelni tickets in person at a Pelni office within 3 days of sailing date (not before!).  But there is usually plenty of space.

In Jakarta, go to the Pelni office at the Tanjung Priok port.  There is no easy public transport from central Jakarta to the port, so take a taxi the 13km out of town a day or two before sailing day.  In Batam, book in person at the Pelni office within 3 days of sailing date to book passage.

In Singapore, try contacting the Pelni office in Singapore at 52 Teluk Blangah Road #02-03 City Port Cebtere Singapore 0988229, 001. 65-62726811.

Option 2:   You can try booking on the Pelni app on your phone.  The problem here is that the app doesn't accept credit cards so you can't pay.  However, after booking on the app it's reported that you can go to an Indomaret supermarket (main branches only) to make payment as they have some sort of arrangement with Pelni, similar to the arrangement they have with Indonesian railways.  Feedback appreciated .

Option 3 : You can book the Batam-Jakarta ferry in either direction by emailing Andy on [email protected] , the same rail expert that runs www.discoverbyrail.com .  He can arrange ferry bookings via his contact in Indonesia.  Only 1st class cabins are booked, with 2 beds, shower & toilet.

Travellers' reports

Travellers Stephen Choi and Chloe Rayfield have written an excellent blog with photos about the ferry journey, read their blog here .

Traveller Christoph Kessler reports (2016):   "The ferry between Batam island (for Singapore) and Tanjung Priok (for Jakarta) currently leaves every Wednesday at 13:00, arriving at 18:00 next day. There are considerable changes during holiday periods like Eid Al Fitr. On our trip (Oct 19 2016) they hit both the departure and the arrival time with unbelievable precision - the difference could be measured in seconds rather than minutes. The Pelni office in Singapore is unable to issue tickets even if these have already been paid for.  The correct place here is the Pelni office in Sekupang (Jl Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo 4, Sekupang, Tel. +62 778 321070), a 10 minute walk from the Sekupang ferry terminal. Pelni allows Internet bookings from about 3 weeks before sailing. However this does not help incoming tourists because the only payment method is at an ATM of bank BNI, to be completed within 24 hours of booking (aaarrghhh!!!). I had an Indonesian travel agent do this for me, and they sent me a jpg of the payment slip. This was sufficient to then retrieve the ticket at the Sekupang Pelni office. Looking back the whole exercise was not really necessary - there were plenty of vacant 1A class cabins on that day."

Traveller Antti Kukka reports "Travelling on Pelni ferries can be an enjoyable experience even in the cheapest class - but it's best to avoid the Idul Fitr (Lebaran) holiday at the end of Ramadan, when A massive surge of people travel to their ancestral home (trip known as mudik) and all of the ferries are going to be absolutely full of people, sleeping on deck, in lifeboats, in hallways."

Feedback is always appreciated!

Penang (Malaysia) to Medan (Sumatra, Indonesia)

Although the Langkawi-ferry website still shows this service, they in fact no longer operate a ferry on this route.

Europe to Indonesia by Trans-Siberian Railway

You can reach Indonesia overland from Europe using the trans-Siberian Railway - or could until Covid and the war in Ukraine intervened, it's currently not practicable.

You take a train from London, Paris or Amsterdam to Moscow, then a Trans-Siberian train from Moscow to Beijing, the twice-weekly train from Beijing to Hanoi in Vietnam, train to Saigon, bus through Cambodia to Bangkok, and trains south to Singapore for the ferries to Java.

To piece together such a journey, start with the Trans-Siberian page .  Then see the Russia page for London-Moscow, and the Vietnam page for Beijing-Hanoi and Hanoi-Saigon.  The Cambodia page covers Saigon to Phnom Penh and on to Bangkok.  The Thailand page covers Bangkok to Singapore.

There are no ferries between Indonesia and Australia.

Recommended hotels

Java has some classic hotels, below I recommend some of the best places to stay in each city.

Jakarta:  The Hermitage

Strangely, all the tourist sights in Jakarta (for example, Old Batavia) are north of Merdeka Square, when all the decent tourist class hotels are to the south, with nothing you'd want to see within walking distance.  But until someone opens a decent place walking distance from Old Batavia, I recommend the wonderful Hermitage in the popular Menteng district just south of Gambir station.  It's a fabulous hotel which only opened in 2016, with great staff, great food, free WiFi, free gym, a cigar lounge and an excellent rooftop pool & bar.  The front building has been converted from a lovely Dutch colonial PTT (Post, Telephone & Telegraph) office built in 1943 with a new 9-floor building behind it containing the rooms and rooftop pool.  The art deco design has been carried through the hotel with acres of white marble, this place is utter luxury but as this it's Indonesia a stay here is more affordable that you'd think.

Yogyakarta:  The Phoenix Hotel

The venerable Phoenix Hotel is the place to stay in Yogyakarta.  A landmark since 1918, the main building was originally the home of a wealthy merchant which became the residence of the Chinese consul after World War 2 before being converted into a hotel.  The hotel has bags of quirky character, friendly staff and is excellently located, 15 minutes walk or 5 minutes by taxi from Yogyakarta station.  There's free WiFi and an excellent swimming pool - it's worth paying a little extra for the pool-view rooms which have balconies overlooking the pool.

Surabaya :  The Majapahit Hotel

In Surabaya, the place to stay is the historic Majapahit Hotel .  Don't argue, trust me on this.  I'll give you three reasons.

First, it's easily the best place in town, a true oasis amongst the tower blocks with elegant suites opening onto colonnades surrounding gardens with fountains.  They simply don't make hotels like this any more.  Great staff, two great restaurants, free WiFi, spa, and a good swimming pool.

Second, this old-world charm is no accident, this is no ordinary hotel.  It's a genuine Sarkies Brothers hotel like Raffles in Singapore, the E&O in Penang and the Strand in Rangoon, opened in 1911 as the Hotel Oranje by Lucas Martin Sarkies, son of Martin Sarkies, co-founder of Raffles.  But Raffles costs upwards of £400 a night, a similar suite at the Majapahit can be yours for £80.  Like I said, don't argue, even if you're on a budget, splurge here .

And there's a third reason.  There is major Indonesian history here - the Flag Incident of September 1945 is a key event in the history of Indonesian independence and it occurred right here at the Hotel Majapahit (at that period called the Hotel Yamato) in Room 33 and on the left-hand lobby flag tower, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Surabaya .  I couldn't resist staying in a bit of history - on our way back through Surabaya I contacted the hotel and upgraded our room to the Merdeka Suite, the famous Room 33.  Though I still don't know if Dutchman W.V.Ch.Ploegman met his end inside or outside that room.  The Sarkies Suite next door (room 32) is the room that was reserved for the Sarkies family when they stayed.

Hotels in Ketapang, Gilimanuk

If you want to stop overnight on a journey between Java and Bali, you'll find more hotels in Ketapang on the Javan side of the Strait of Bali than a Gilimanuk on the Bali side, though the choice still isn't great.  For somewhere half decent with free WiFi, a good swimming pool and (albeit somewhat characterless) rooms set in gardens, try the Ketapang Indah Hotel about 2km south of Ketapang ferry terminal, just off the main road.

Hotels on Bali:  Bloo Lagoon Eco Village

There are many resort towns on Bali, some better for surfing, some for diving.  Padangbai is on the southeast coast of Bali, family-friendly, good for diving, day trips to Ubud, fast ferries to the Gili islands and conventional ferries to Lombok.  If that suits you, the place to stay is the Bloo Lagoon Eco Village on the headland just above the town with views over the bay.  The village consist of self-contained bungalows with small kitchens, there's free WiFi, a good pool with water slide, a spa, and an excellent restaurant serving truly wonderful home-cooked food.  Staff are great.  The Bloo Lagoon Village was opened in 2009 by English architect Tony Gwilliam who has written a book about it, Far from boring .

Flights to Jakarta

Overland travel by train & bus around Indonesia is an essential part of the experience, so once there, don't cheat and fly, stay on the ground!  But a long-haul flight might be unavoidable to reach it in the first place.  For flights to Jakarta, compare airlines at Skyscanner .

Travel insurance & other tips

Always take out travel insurance.

Never travel overseas without travel insurance from a reliable insurer, with at least £1m or preferably £5m medical cover.  It should also cover cancellation and loss of cash and belongings, up to a sensible limit.  An annual multi-trip policy is usually cheaper than several single-trip policies even for just 2 or 3 trips a year, I have an annual policy with Staysure.co.uk myself.  Here are some suggested insurers.  Seat61 gets a small commission if you buy through these links.

UK flag

Get an eSIM with mobile data package

Don't rely on WiFi, download an eSIM with a mobile data package for the country you're visiting and stay connected.  Most newer mobile phones can download a virtual SIM card so you don't need to buy a physical SIM, including iPhone 11 & later, see device compatibility list .  Maya.net is a reliable eSIM data retailer with a 4.5 out of 5 Trustpilot rating and a range of packages including unlimited data .

Get a Curve card for foreign travel

Most banks give you a poor exchange rate, then add a foreign transaction fee on top.  A Curve MasterCard means no foreign transaction fees and gives you the mid-market exchange rate, at least up to a certain limit, £500 per month at time of writing.  The money you spend on your Curve card goes straight onto one of your existing debit or credit cards.

How it works:   1. Download the Curve app for iPhone or Android .  2. Enter your details & they'll send you a Curve MasterCard - they send to the UK and most European addresses.  3. Link your existing credit & debit cards to the app, you can link up to two cards with the free version of Curve, I link my normal debit card and my normal credit card.  4. Now use the Curve MasterCard to buy things online or in person or take cash from ATMs, exactly like a normal MasterCard. Curve does the currency conversion and puts the balance in your own currency onto whichever debit or credit card is currently selected in the Curve app.  You can even change your mind about which card it goes onto, within 14 days of the transaction.

I have a Curve Blue card myself, it means I can buy a coffee on a foreign station on a card without being stung by fees and lousy exchange rates, just by tapping the Curve card on their card reader.  The money goes through Curve to my normal debit card and is taken directly from my account (in fact I have the Curve card set up as payment card on Apple Pay on my iPhone, so can double-click my phone, let it do Face ID then tap the reader with the phone - even easier than digging a card out).  I get a little commission if you sign up to Curve, but I recommend it here because I think it's great.  See details, download the app and get a Curve card , they'll give you £5 cashback through that link.

Get a VPN for safe browsing.  W hy you need a VPN

When you're travelling you often use free WiFi in public places which may not be secure.  A VPN encrypts your connection so it's always secure, even on unsecured WiFi.  It also means you can select the geographic location of the IP address you browse with, to get around geoblocking which a surprising number of websites apply.  See VPNs & why you need one explained .  ExpressVPN is a best buy with a 4.7 out of 5 Trustpilot ranking which I use myself - I've signed up as an ExpressVPN affiliate, and if you go with expressvpn.com using the links on this page, you should see a special deal, 3 months free with an annual subscription.  I get a small commission to help support this site.

Carry an Anker powerbank

Tickets, reservations, vaccination records and Interrail or Eurail passes are often held digitally on your mobile phone, so it's vital to keep it charged.  I always carry an Anker powerbank which can recharge my phone several times over if I can't get to a power outlet.  Buy from Amazon.co.uk or from Buy from Amazon.com .

11 Reasons You Should Visit Jakarta Over Bali

Ancol Beach, Indonesia

Perhaps a megapolitan city with sprawling skyscrapers and busy streets isn’t what comes to mind when you think about Indonesia. If you’re interested in a different side of Indonesia other than Bali’s nature and beaches, the capital Jakarta might be perfect for you. Here’s 11 reasons you should visit Jakarta over Bali.

The diversity.

Metropolitan as it is, Jakarta attracts people from across the archipelago to live and make a living there. That makes the city a melting pot of diverse cultures and ethnicity, although most locals in Bali are Balinese and Javanese. Bali’s local culture is fascinating to observe, but Jakarta’s diversity creates a unique dynamic that offers you plenty of different things to try and see, from people, food, customs, even houses of worship to visit.

When people from different localities migrated to Jakarta, they brought with them authentic recipes. From fancy restaurants to street food vendors, tourists can enjoy an extensive range of food to choose from. Coming from different parts of Indonesia there are many unique takes on popular foods like satay , soto , even the prized nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice).

The Shopping Scene

Bali has its share of fabulous art market, boutiques and traditional marketplace, but Jakarta still dominates in terms of mega shopping malls and the modern shopping scene . There are over a hundred malls packed closely together in this urban jungle, making it one of Southeast Asia’s shopper’s paradise. Shoppers can find both local and international brands, authentic handcrafted goods and luxury items. Even better, once a year, the city hosts a huge discount event, the Jakarta Great Sale, where prices are slashed up to 70%.

The Public Transportation

Jakarta has one of the most reliable public transportation services in Indonesia, while in Bali, tourists have to rent their own bike or car to get around. The city’s Transjakarta covers virtually every area in the city, and it costs about $0.3 per ride. Jakarta is also building an MRT line that will be completed in 2018.

Transjakarta stop│

The Cityscape

While Bali’s natural charms — beaches, waterfalls, mountains and more — are absolutely mesmerizing, Jakarta offers different but equally stunning scenery. The concrete jungle presents an energetic landscape that turns into a breath-taking skyline at night. And that means endless choices of rooftop bars and romantic dinners overlooking the city lights.

The Contemporary Art and Culture

Bali can pride itself in being a home selected by many international artists to live and create. We’re talking Antonio Blanco, Le Meyeur, and more. But Jakarta’s art and culture scene are also gleaming with mind-boggling contemporary artworks by youthful artists, both local and international. The city has numerous art spaces to visit, where tourists can admire different works of art — paintings, sculptures, installations, and more.

The Historical Beat

As the capital city and center of civilization, Jakarta has been through a lot of seasons and episodes. The Jakarta Old Town is one of the must-visit attractions that still has old colonial buildings repurposed as museums and cafés, including the old historical harbor that once serves as the city’s major port.

The Museums

If you’re interested in learning about Indonesia’s history and culture, Jakarta is the place to go. The museums in Jakarta holds stories and artifacts from different parts of era and localities. In this city, tourists can visit all kinds of museums, from the National Museum, Textile Museum, Bank Indonesia Museum to many more. Often, the collections from Jakarta’s museums represent cultures from across the nation, including, of course, Bali.

The Islands

Bali is certainly not the only stunning island in Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago, and Jakarta’s area covers some of the most beautiful small islands in its own string of Thousand Islands. Among the hundreds of islands, about a dozen of them are open to tourists, presenting a tropical coastal beauty with plenty of activities to enjoy. The nearest island from Jakarta takes only a half-an-hour boat ride to visit and some of them are located close to one another so you can cover two or three islands in one row (that’s actually the Indonesian version of killing two birds with one stone).

Pulau Bidadari

The Nightlife

As the sun goes down, parts of the city transform into a large party ground that accommodates the city’s upper class and executive crowd, along with its many expats. Jakarta’s nightlife is notorious and still one of the liveliest in Asia. While the bars and clubs are also lively in Bali’s hip neighborhoods , in Jakarta you can actually party with locals.

The Day Trips

Not that you’ll ever run out of things to do in the city itself, but Jakarta’s strategic location as a heart of development and civilization puts it near other charming cities and attractions worth visiting. Bogor, for example, was the Colonials’ favorite getaway , a small lush city just an hour away. There’s also Bandung, with its perfect balance as both a modern city with hotels, boutiques, and cafés while accentuating its natural charms —mountains, magical crater, jungles, and more.

Mount Ruang Erupts in Indonesia, Spewing Lava Thousands of Feet Into the Sky

Hundreds of earthquakes were detected in the weeks preceding the eruption of the volcano in North Sulawesi province. Hundreds of people were evacuated.

Video player loading

By Christine Hauser

Mount Ruang, a volcano in Indonesia, erupted on Tuesday, spewing fiery lava and ash thousands of feet into the night sky and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people in the North Sulawesi province, according to the authorities and local news reports.

The volcano erupted at about 7:19 p.m. local time, Antara, the national news agency, reported. The country’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency said on Wednesday that more than 800 people in nearby villages were displaced by the eruption, many using ferries and taking shelter in churches and community centers.

A large cloud of ashes rises from a volcano into the clouds, illuminated by the orange flames from the lava. The light is reflected on the waters.

The authorities said supplies such as mats, blankets, cleaning materials, and tents were needed, and that more shelters might be opening for people fleeing the volcano.

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago nation. It is spread across what is known as the Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates clash under the surface of the Pacific Ocean and spawn earthquakes and eruptions from volcanoes.

Mount Ruang is a stratovolcano , or a steep, conical volcano that has built up over years in layers from explosive eruptions of lava, rock fragments, ash and other properties.

“It is in a part of the world where there are a lot of active volcanoes,” said Dr. Tracy K.P. Gregg , who chairs the geology department at the University at Buffalo.

Its last major eruption was in 2002, when the column of lava and ash that it spewed reached up to 17 miles, Dr. Gregg said.

She said the volcano in 2002 measured 4, a “large” volcano on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, a scale used to measure the strength of an eruption by looking at several factors, such as duration, ash volume and plume height. Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991 measured 6 on the index. Mount St. Helens in the United States in 1980 measured 5.

“So it is a little bit smaller than that,” she said of Mount Ruang. Right now, it is not as violent as the previous eruption, she added, but the volcano cannot be fully assessed while it is in progress.

More than 300 volcanic earthquakes were detected over a period of at least two weeks preceding the eruption of Mount Ruang.

It is not immediately clear why the volcano erupted when it did. “Every volcano has its own personality,” she said.

In the past few years, several volcanoes in Indonesia have erupted. In December, 2023, the bodies of 11 hikers were found on the slopes of Mount Marapi on the island of Sumatra, after an eruption that spewed an ash column of nearly 3,000 meters — about 10,000 feet high.

In December 2022, more than 1,900 people were evacuated from the area surrounding Mount Semeru as it erupted. In an eruption there the previous December , more than 50 people were killed and hundreds more were injured.
