lr3 cruise control not working

StreetsofCompton

First off, I'm sorry to say I have no idea about the issue you've presented. However, I wanted to say that you took a sick pic. Also, are you running the KO2's?

I'd guess you have the same problem as me. I suspect it's the clock spring (not cheap)... Other possibilities but unlikely would be the buttons, but I doubt it. One of these days someone will come out with a reasonably priced one. I notice your profile says UT, and your picture is UK plates??

I've only ever seen the switches cause the cruise control not to work on LR3's. Do you have any kind of diagnostic tool that will allow you to monitor live data from the switches?

It was under the warranty when it was replaced. I believe it is in the steering wheel. Other than that I am not sure what it takes to replace. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

medicfernando said: What exactly are the clock springs and where are they located? DIY? Thanks! Click to expand...

I wouldn't say it is a DIY for the novice anyway. To remove it, you need to disarm the air bags. That involves a process of putting the baby to bed, and a tool to release the cap. I am not saying it cannot be done, just something I'm not willing to do. I also had my clock spring replaced under warranty, but it didn't take long for it to fail. The reason I suspect it is less likely to be the buttons is because the radio buttons take a beating and have never missed a beat. Be nice for all the buttons to work though.

There is nothing special for removing the airbags. If you want to be extra safe, disconnect the battery for 15 minutes. The hard part for a DIYer would be removing the air bag which requires a special tool. I've also never seen radio switches on the steering wheel fail, just cruise control switches. I've probably replaced a dozen or so of them.

Thanks all. It seems unlikely to be the switches because One drive it works, the next time it doesn't. When it stops working i can usually turn the key off, re-start it and it will work most of the time.

Would be as someone mentioned either the buttons themselves or possibly a bad wheel speed sensor. Sometimes people have had theirs rubbed since it snakes down with the brake wear sensor in that wiring harness. Yeah GAP would be a good help here. Possibly go to dealer and ask them to reflash the ECU for that system. That or have them diagnose.

Cruise Control Not Permitted

  • Add to quote

I have owned four Range Rovers and two Discoveries and am familiar with their electrical/software system quirks, but this one has stumped the dealer. On my RRS (with over 35,000 miles), the "Cruise Control Not Permitted" message appears in the dashboard message center from time to time in a random fashion, either with the cc engaged, or not. (I do not have adaptive cc). If the cruise control is in use when the message appears, it automatically turns off, without the ability to re-engage it, unless the engine is turned off and restarted, resetting the computer (although it will not reset every time). This system fault automatically should occur when the low gearbox range or the Terrain Response System is engaged, but should not occur under normal driving conditions - which is exactly when it does. The dealer re-loaded the software, but to no avail - the faults still occur randomly. The dealer believes that it is a software glitch, but I'm thinking perhaps the cruise control mechanism itself has some sensor that is picking up the low range/terrain response condition erroneously. Any similar experiences or suggestions?

lr3 cruise control not working

A while back, every blue moon, my cruise control would not engage. Usually I would have it on, hit the brakes or use the button on the steering wheel to momentarily cancel it and then there would be no response when I hit the "resume" or "+" button to enable it again. Like you, I would have to recycle the ignition and then it would work fine again. I never saw that message on my message center though. It happened so rarely - and I don't use CC much to begin with - I never bothered telling the dealer back then. Since the "Vehicle Enhancement Program" campaign was performed on my car (a July 05 build) the problem has not reoccurred, don't know if it is coincidence or something in the software upload fixed it.

Thank you, Umberto. I've gone through the Vehicle Enhancement Program (and all other software upgrades). It simply may be a defective control. Are you aware of any other meltdowns after 35,000 miles?

lr3 cruise control not working

Oh ****...another bug to look forward to! Thanks guys...

Has your dealer looked at the ABS/TC/HDC sensors ? The HDC system is linked into the cruise control +/- buttons and a fault on HDC could also have an effect on the CC. I had a problem with the ABS sensors when my car was new (mine is a March 05 build, 3 months before delivery began) which occassionally activated the HDC, new sensors cured the problem

I had that happen to me about a month ago. I just pulled over and restarted the car and it hasn't occured since. I've also had the experience where I couldn't put the cruise on at all. Did the same restart and all was fine.

Thanks, fellows. I'll check the ABS/TC/HDC sensors and keep you posted.

Problem (hopefully) solved: The dealer spoke with Land Rover's national tech representative who suggested replacing the circular cassette rotary coupler and clock spring found in the steering column (which handles all switches on the steering wheel and is a waranty item that had to be replaced on one other vehicle to date in North America). So far, so good...

Gents I am now being to have this issue with my 06, but only when driving on wet roads. I think it may be those sensors ..

5 Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

Magnus Sellén

  • Updated: March 15, 2023

Cruise Control Not Working

It would be difficult to find a vehicle on the road today without cruise control. This invaluable feature makes driving long distances easier but can also cause trouble when it malfunctions. Understanding the reasons your cruise control stopped working ensures that you can get the problem fixed quickly for a more enjoyable ride.

While this fault can cause issues with the cruise control system itself, there could also be an effect on the acceleration of your vehicle. That’s why you want to have it looked at as soon as you notice a problem. Let’s take a quick look at the reasons your cruise control may have stopped working.

Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

The most common reason a cruise control stops working is due to a blown fuse or a defective brake pedal switch . It can also be caused by issues with the throttle control system or the ABS. In older cruise control systems, it can be caused by a broken vacuum line.

Here is a more detailed list of the possible reasons your cruise control is not working:

1. Blown Fuse

broken fuse

All electrical systems in the vehicle are controlled by fuses. Your cruise control system is attached to a fuse that can blow if there is a short circuit or fault. Without a good fuse, the cruise control system can’t work at all.

Thankfully, it’s not difficult to find and replace a blown fuse. Look in the owner’s manual to find the fuse that corresponds with the cruise control technology.

2. Defective Brake Pedal Switch

push brake pedal

The brake pedal switch is responsible for turning the brake lights on and off based on the pedal position. Cruise control systems are designed to disengage whenever your brake pedal gets pressed.

Because the cruise control is wired into the brake pedal switch, any fault can cause it to stop working. When the brake pedal switch malfunctions, the car believes the brakes are engaged, causing the system to turn off automatically. Not only that, but your car’s brake light might also be stuck on, leaving confused drivers in your wake.

3. Malfunctioning Speed Sensor

abs sensor close

Speed sensors are located on every wheel or differential. The purpose of these sensors is to monitor the speed of the wheels to determine if traction control is needed.

The speed sensors are also part of the cruise control system. When a sensor fails, the cruise control can stop working and the speedometer might act strange as well.

If there is an issue with a speed sensor, it will often show with an ABS warning light or a check engine light on the dashboard.

RELATED: 3 Symptoms of a Bad ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

4. Electrical Issues

cruise control buttons

The cruise control system is electronic, with many components working together to make the system operate. If the cruise control fails to work, you want to check the wiring harness and associated connectors for a fault.

You also need to ensure that the voltage source is supplying enough power to the system. Even the smallest fault can cause defects with the cruise control. In many cases, there can be an issue with the cruise control lever or buttons causing the cruise control to not engage.

If your cruise control buttons are located on the steering wheel it could also be caused by a bad clock spring, which is located behind the steering wheel.

Check the system with an OBD2 scanner to look for any trouble codes related to the cruise control.

5. Damaged Vacuum Actuator, Hoses or Cable (Older cruise control)

If you drive an older vehicle with cruise control, you might have an issue with the vacuum actuator or the cable that connects to the throttle. If there has been damage done to the vacuum hoses or the actuator, the cruise control will stop working altogether.

Additionally, the cable linking the actuator to the throttle must be in good shape. If it has been broken, the cruise control will fail.

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise control is a feature that is used when you are traveling at a consistent speed. Cruise control was first introduced for automobiles in the 1950s. However, it took many years before it became a staple in the modern vehicle.

This electrical system allows you to set a predetermined speed and take your foot off of the gas pedal. If you are on a long drive, there is less fatigue because you don’t have to try to maintain your speed. Cruise control can also benefit fuel economy because the vehicle uses less fuel when traveling steadily.

In newer cars, you might be able to find adaptive cruise control , which is a smart technology. Adaptive cruise control allows you to travel at a predetermined speed, but it also helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you with the help of sensors. With conventional cruise control, you need to take over when the car in front of you slows down, but that’s not the case with adaptive cruise control.

There are also vehicles nowadays with not only cruise control, but fully self-driving vehicles . We will most likely see much more of this in the future.

Cruise Control Repair Cost

The cost to repair your cruise control system depends on what caused it to fail. If you need to replace a cruise control or brake switch, you might spend between $125 and $350, including parts and labor. However, the cost to change a fuse is only a few dollars and you can perform the replacement yourself in just a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, when something major fails, such as the actuator, you could be looking at a much higher repair bill. In some vehicles, the cost to replace a cruise control actuator can cost more than $700. These costs rise if you drive a luxury vehicle or one that is difficult to get parts for.

It might not seem immediately important for you to fix the broken cruise control, but this defective system can affect other performance aspects. You could start to notice issues with acceleration or have trouble with the speedometer. To play it safe, it’s always best to have the cruise control repaired as soon as you notice a problem.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Yes. If the cruise control is installed from the factory, you should check your car’s owner’s manual for the fuse location. If it’s an aftermarket cruise control, you’ll need to follow the wires to find the fuse.

Does the brake switch affect the cruise control system?

Yes. The brake switch affects the cruise control system. The brake switch sends a signal to the cruise control system to let it know when the brakes are being applied for the engine to know when it should stop accelerating.

Will the cruise control work if the check engine light is on?

The cruise control function will be disabled when the check engine light is on in most car models, even if the cause of the check engine light is not the cruise control itself. This is mainly due to safety reasons.

Can a vacuum leak affect cruise control?

Older vehicles use vacuum to control the throttle for the cruise control, and in this case a vacuum leak can heavily affect the cruise control. However, modern cruise controls are fully electric and in most cases will not be affected by a vacuum leak if the check engine light is not illuminated.

Although many people may think that the cruise control system is unimportant and not worth spending money to repair, the problem can be caused by a faulty part that will affect the engine’s performance or durability. Therefore, it is best not to ignore the problem if your cruise control is not working without first diagnosing the car properly.

If your cruise control still isn’t working after trying all the tips in this article, it’s probably time to take it in for a professional opinion from a mechanic. It may be a more serious problem that requires replacement parts or repairs. In the meantime, drive safe and enjoy the open road!

coolant and cruise control

  • Add to quote

last week i started getting a warning that my coolant was low, usually came on when i would really give it some thottle then go away, so this past weekend i popped the hood, noticed it was a little low and topped it off. however i am now getting the message that its low all the time, even though to actual level is above the fill range. Also im now getting a cruise control error. Cruise control not available. Ive had this message before and it went away after replacing my battery but the was less than a year ago. I wouldnt think i would need a new battery in less than a year? any help?

perhaps charge battery anyway This post may not be of much help but ... I was wondering if you have one of those CTEK type battery maintainers? Regardless, you might try to put the battery on charge overnight at some slow charge rate for a few days. I do this every spring with my CTEK, (both batteries actually), as a less than fully charged battery can cause strange error indications. I do not suppose you have a ScanGauge II so you really do not know what sort of water temperature readings you are getting. The temp needle on the dash gauge does not tell one much so .... Also my favourite first fix attempt to all error message concerns relates to the tail lights. Did you change any bulbs lately or are any burned out? A defective tail/brake/reverse light bulb or brake light switch can appear as any number of big sounding troubles but are nothing but the Can-Bus following its twisted logic path. Below is a link to some brake light and switch files on my disco3 gallery. DISCO3.CO.UK Photo Gallery - Brake Light Switch Replacement I did look at a wiring diagram related to the cruise control and there does not seem to be any fuses related to it. The rocker switch signals seem to go directly to the engine control module; also I think the cruise not working is a result rather than a cause. I doubt that there is some big air bubble in the cooling system - there can be, and a no cruise available signal is sort of a reaction to some call from somewhere for reduced engine operation to protect the engine - but I assume all seems to be running normally. Air suspension failure or any number of things will shut the cruise control down but not necessarily reduce engine performance.

Todd- I have had this happen about 3 times. You are right, it usually happens when I am doing alot of messing with the cruise, turning it on and off frequently due to driving conditions or downshifting descending a hill to control speed while the cruise is on. Like you, the cruise won't work again until the computer reboots after being shut down. I've had to wait longer than 30 seconds for that to happen. Also, sometimes my "off button" won't work and I have t o tap the brake to disengage it. I plan to ask my dealer next time I need to go in for something else. Let me know if you find this is a TSB issue or just a LR quirk.

In a Volvo I owned, I got this message when the vacuum pump was breaking down. It apparently couldn't keep up the pressure for certain aspects of the "cruise control" controls.

Similar issues with my '05 HSE. After long periods of not using the cruise control, the computer "forgets" that it's there. If I go a couple of months without using it, the cruise control wont turn on. Pull off the road, turn off the the key and restart and it works again every time. After this experience, I make it a point to use every electronic gizmo at least once a month. Once, the Bluetooth stopped working. To fix that, I had to disconnect the battery. Worked fine after that. I've come to believe the computer in my LR3 is named HAL and to keep him on his best behavior, every now and then I pull into Toyota dealership and park so that HE can see me talking to a salesperson.

i had this happen. brought into the dealer. there was a post where someone said the contacts needed to be cleaned. however, if my case, i think the dealer replaced some part. it fixed the random "cruise not permitted" issue. but, my "off" button periodically still does not work. i have chalked it up to the same gremlin that randomly possesses my window controls.

in my knoweledge air bag rotory coupler(spiral cable) it is connected to cruise switch and wiring may be open circuit,if u go to dealer they will check with IDS and trays fault in engine system, fault may chance( speed control switch cicuit.) [email protected]

Okay, just picked my car up and was told that there was a SW Update available to address this problem. I haven't driven it long enough to know if it worked, but it was apparently a known issue. Interesting piece of information I found out, though, was that software updates are NOT covered by the LR extended warranty. I found this odd and asked some pointed questions...even if a system on my truck is not operational and it will be fixed by a SW update, this will not be covered because there is not a defective component. So, in my case I was charged 1/2 hour labor (not bad, and he reduced it from an hour) to update the SW. My service manager told me that even if the truck had a SW issue the prevented it from starting, I would still have to pay for the SW update as a physical module has not failed. I found this interesting since I was led to believe that the LR extended warranty was pretty much an extension of the factory bumper to bumper, minus wear items (like leather, carpet, trim, etc.). Anyway, I had "outdated SW" and they updated it. Maybe it is worth checking that all of your SW is up to date before you go out of warranty. ?

  • Aug 22, 2008

That's the dumbest thing I've heard this week. "it's not broken, it just doesn't work" and "the software update that costs us virtually nothing will cost you" Thanks for the tip.

  • Aug 24, 2008

Yeah, that sounded pretty cheap and stupid to me too. If a system is failing, fix it. That's why people buy the f*&king warranty!

Similar issues with my '05 HSE. After long periods of not using the cruise control, the computer "forgets" that it's there. If I go a couple of months without using it, the cruise control wont turn on. Pull off the road, turn off the the key and restart and it works again every time.
