TWICE talks record-breaking US tour, embracing change and an even 'more ambitious' future

twiceyoung tour

Since debut, TWICE has evolved not only as artists but as people. In the beginning, the members were unsure of what the future held, but the last almost nine years have proven to be full of excitement and opportunity.

The group debuted in 2015 and has since become one of the best-selling K-pop girl groups of all time. From chart-hitting music releases to high achievements, TWICE has cemented their spot as top global performers, and this momentum is not slowing down.

USA TODAY spoke with TWICE, using a Korean translator, during the U.S. leg of their READY TO BE tour about their growth over the years, what's next for the group and more.

READY TO BE tour made TWICE 'happy' and 'honored'

On June 10, TWICE embarked on the U.S. leg of their fifth world tour, "READY TO BE." The group has toured in the states before but this time broke records. TWICE became the first female K-pop group to headline MLB and NFL stadiums including SoFi Stadium and MetLife Stadium. Each venue has a concert capacity of over 50,000, and TWICE sold out both.

"We’re very honored," said the group's leader Jihyo.

Since the release of their latest EP, members said it's been very exciting. " READY TO BE " hit the Billboard 200 chart at No. 2 and now holds the biggest pure sales week for an album by a female K-pop act in the U.S. ,  with over 153,000 units sold and 10.28 million streams in its first week.

"I am very amazed and very honored that fans globally can recognize us," said Tzuyu. "They come to see us and love our songs."

New performances bring excitement on tour

In 2022, TWICE played sold-out arenas across the states on their fourth world tour. They also took on two encore performances at the BMO Stadium, making TWICE the first female K-Pop group to play a North American stadium.

This time around, the group wanted to try new things, said Dahyun. "We have a live band for the first time. We have our solos for the first time when we’re very used to doing things in units," she said.

The tour's setlist is filled with a variety of tracks from the group's extensive and lively discography. From the intro with " SET ME FREE " to the excitement of the encore roulette, each performance brought high energy and cheers from fans, who TWICE lovingly refer to as ONCE.

"ONCE completes all our stages and performances," said Dahyun. "Because ONCE is so good at responding and cheering, we are able to also enjoy the stages. Even though the lyrics are in Korean, foreign ONCE sing along to the songs so we are very happy and excited on stage."

Get to know more on the girl group: Here's a guide on TWICE's members, milestones and latest album

Growing since debut days

TWICE was initially formed on the competition show "Sixteen" in 2015. The reality show selected TWICE's final lineup out of 16 trainees. The group went on to debut with with “ Like OOH-AHH " in October 2015.

From their songs and styling to their strength and confidence, many things have developed for TWICE.

"As we become the older generation of K-pop girl group, we are able to perform in bigger and bigger stadiums," said Jeongyeon. "From that, we are able to recognize and see how much we have grown."

Their sound has also changed, said Jihyo, moving beyond the "bright songs" of their debut. "Ever since debut, we’ve been trying many different genres. We are able to prepare a lot of different performances and stages. We can be touching. We can be very cool. We can be cute. We can do a lot of these things."

Through the years, TWICE has become involved in the creative process, allowing them to showcase and highlight their personalities and identities.

"Nowadays, we are able to participate more in discussing about the concerts, albums, even writing our own songs and even the concepts about outfits, hair and makeup," said Dahyun.

Particularly in their performances, the members have further come into their own. "Since this is already our ninth year of being active as a girl group, I am able to have more fun on stage. I’m not as nervous anymore or anxious," said Tzuyu.

"In the beginning when we had our first concert, we were more nervous," said Momo. "These days, we are able to move more freely out and show the fans even more."

Mina and Sana shared similar sentiments on how preparation for performances has become smoother and more in sync over time. "Even though we don’t do as many run-throughs on our choreography practices, we are able to catch up and still have the details very fitting to each other," said Sana.

This has led a sense of joy for TWICE – a feeling of loving what they do. "As we continue to be active as a girl group, I am still able to stay very grateful and humble," said Chaeyoung.

This humble mentality resonates throughout TWICE as each member has a strong devotion to one another and ONCE in order to keep growing together.

"As we continue to have more experiences, I feel that responsibility on my shoulders," said Nayeon. "I feel more ambitious."

Understanding TWICE 'at heart'

With each release and each milestone met, TWICE has been able to refine their identity voice and crush stereotypes.

"We’re singers, not just people who do cute songs," said Jihyo. "As we went on, we were able to find more of ourselves and our identity more smoothly.

The group's most recent single "SET ME FREE" best exemplifies where TWICE is in their careers, said Dahyun.

"I feel that it’s a song that really talks about us right now in this stage where we feel like we’re not decorating ourselves or pretending to be someone else," she explained. "As time goes by, ONCE is really able to see TWICE just as we are."

TWICE has a deep love for ONCE

TWICE has immense dedication and respect for ONCE. The group credits their fans as the reason they love what they do.

"When I hear that ONCE felt very comforted and very encouraged, I feel very proud," said Nayeon. "We get so much energy from ONCE."

For the members, ONCE holds a special place in their hearts as they have spent almost a decade together. "When ONCE says, 'TWICE was in my youth days,' I feel very happy and satisfied," said Jeongyeon.

What's next for TWICE?

Though the U.S. tour has come to a close, there are plans on the horizon for TWICE.

"Recently, we’ve been doing more unit activities and solos," said Mina. "I want to keep making those memories and activities with ONCE from here and on."

This includes the subunit MISAMO (comprised of members Mina, Sana and Momo) whose debut EP is set for July 26 and Jihyo's solo debut set for Aug. 18.

TWICE hopes to continue to perform and meet more ONCE across the global.

"In the future, I want to go to places, countries I’ve never been to," said Momo.

When it comes to their music, TWICE will continue to expand and try new things. "Anything we haven’t done before, we’re willing to try and we want to try," said Nayeon.

"We have so many things we want to show," said Chaeyoung. "We will do our best, so please look forward to everything we have."

TWICE on the Power of Sticking Together

By Kristine Kwak

Kristine Kwak

Since debuting in 2015, TWICE have been going strong as a nine-member group with a bond like no other, which is a feat in itself. We first met in Korea during the pandemic, right before the release of their EP Taste of Love . Since then, TWICE have skyrocketed: They have released bop after bop , and while they’ve always been a force in Asia, these past few years have shown their ability to break through overseas. Along the way, their sound expanded from bubblegum pop into other genres like R&B and house, and they’ve constantly transformed their image. They’ve been on tour for what feels like forever, and each tour stop is bigger and better. In June of last year, TWICE became the first female K-pop group to play SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, and of course, sold it out.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

It’s been two years since we last spoke in Anseong to chat “Alcohol-Free,” and so much has happened since then, but I want to start with the world tour! I was at the L.A. show back in February 2022 and also at your first U.S. stadium show in May — since then, you’ve been busy continuing to tour, with bigger venues each time. What has that been like?

Nayeon : Just going on tour to so many places brings us happiness and was such a good opportunity for us. To go back to cities we’ve been to but to perform at larger venues with more fans is so meaningful.

Are there any fun memories from the Ready to Be tour last year that really stuck out to you?

Dahyun: The Ready to Be tour was special in that we were able to go to countries we haven’t been to, and it was great to see all of the ONCEs there as well. Personally, I really wanted to see the Eiffel Tower during our Europe leg, so I loved that I was able to go and take a lot of photos. And we’re going to South America soon — I think the reaction and atmosphere there is going to be full of passion, so I’m looking forward to that.

Momo : With this concert, for the first time, we’re doing solo stages too, and each time we do our solo performances, the reaction is so great. It’s definitely a highlight from this tour.

Jihyo : And we also had a live band! Working with a live band was also a new challenge.

TWICE Score First Number One Album in U.S. With ‘With YOU-th’

How to get tickets to twice's 'ready to be (once more)' show in las vegas, twice transform 'fallon' stage with stadium-ready 'set me free' performance.

Momo: I went on a short trip to Phuket, Thailand, with my family. I had such a great time, and I felt so well-rested.

Jeongyeon: Jihyo and I went on a trip with both of our parents, and I was the tour guide. We went on a luxurious trip [ laughs ].

TWICE have been so active with short-form video these days — how do you decide which trends to hop on?

Jihyo: I’ve become quite the short-form fairy these days [ laughs ]. I tend to look through on my own a lot, but I don’t know the trends that well, so I ask our team for ideas, or if I see something I want to try, I might just try it out. It depends. If I see something fun, I send it to our members and ask them to do it with me.

Is there a recent one that you particularly liked?

Jihyo: I recently went on a Korean variety show called I Live Alone — I did one with my friends while wearing hanbok . I think Sana liked that one.

Sana: I liked seeing Jihyo’s excited facial expressions that showed how well she was spending her time off [ laughs ].

So by the time you’re in Vegas for your show at Allegiant Stadium, the new music’s going to be out! Can we look forward to seeing some performances of the new songs?

Momo: Yes.… [ laughs ]

Nayeon: Since the music will be out by then, I think the fans can look forward to the first performances of the songs.

At the time of this interview, we’re just a week from the release of “I GOT YOU.” The teasers, concept photos, etc., are all out — how do you anticipate fans ’ reactions to the song?

Jihyo: We actually had a chance to see the full music video for “I GOT YOU,” and it shows our relationships with one another. I think the fans will really like that aspect of the video. I’m looking forward to their reactions, too.

And you’ve recorded a few songs in English now. I imagine it gets a little easier each time, but what are some of the things you try to pay extra attention to when it comes to recording in English? I saw the Opening Trailer , which was in English, too.

Jihyo: What do you guys think?

Jihyo: We’re not really strong at English.

Momo: And since each song has different lyrics, it remains challenging each time.

Nayeon: Especially if it’s to a fast beat.

Tzuyu: But interestingly the members have told me that the English version sometimes comes out better than the Korean one!

How would you describe the new album, With YOU-th ? Some of the images that have come out so far were reminiscent of your “Feel Special” era, looking at them as a third party.

Nayeon: It’s our 13th mini album, and focuses on how we’re spending our youth with you.

Jihyo: The vibe might be there, but I think the message is a little bit different. Around “Feel Special,” we were going through some hard times and that track in particular was more about how we were able to persevere through all of that. I think this album focuses on our current state of how happy we are in the moment, after everything we’ve been through. I think it also shows our growth and improvement over time.

What are some of the members’ favorite tracks from the album?

Nayeon: Mine is “I GOT YOU.”

Momo: Me too.

Nayeon: I think with “I GOT YOU,” even after we were done with production, it’s a song that I’m still listening to on my own.

Mina: I like “BLOOM.” It has a pretty melody and makes me feel like spring is fast approaching.

Jeongyeon: I like “NEW NEW.”

Sana: You too, right, Tzuyu?

Tzuyu: Yes. I like “NEW NEW.”

Jeongyeon: It has a bright energy that almost makes it sound like a song that we would have put out in our earlier days, with a vibrant TWICE-like energy. But since we’ve grown and our voices have changed, it has a slightly different tone, so I like that.

What about lyrics-wise?

Jihyo: Three of our members participated in writing this time around. Those three members should share their favorite lines!

Chaeyoung: Someone actually was talking about how my lyric was cute! I wrote “RUSH,” and in the hook of that song, the lyric says, “I need you obliviously,” and the members all really liked that. They told me it was cute, so I feel proud.

Dahyun: In “YOU GET ME,” the song has a connection with “I GOT YOU,” and the lyric says “Come run to me and hold me tight immediately,” and it fits well with the drum, beat, and bass, so I personally like how that came out. And there’s a part that we all sing “You already know!” and because it has the meaning of understanding one another without having to explicitly say something, I really like it.

Can you share anything from the production process of the new album that stood out to you?

Sana: With “ONE SPARK,” we actually had recorded this song a while ago with assigned parts. And this time around, the lyrics changed a little and the division of parts also shifted along with that, with a rerecording, to finalize the song. I think we all wanted it to be even better, so we had separate meetings about the new version, so the rerecordings and meetings stood out to me.

Jihyo: There’s a song called “BLOOM” that Jeongyeon wrote, actually. That song came up in meetings when I was preparing for my solo album a while back. It was going to be a side track on my solo album, but I was having a hard time bringing it to life with my voice, so we ended up moving forward with another track, but funnily enough, the part that I was having a hard time with became my part this time around [ laughs ]. So I worked really hard to record it!

It’s been so long since we’ve connected, and even aside from all of the shows you’ve put on, Nayeon, Jihyo, you had your solo promotions, and of course the MiSaMo (Mina, Sana, Momo) sub-unit was a success, too. How was that?

Jihyo: Nayeon, you’re my senior when it comes to being solo! When I was preparing for my solo release, I wanted to participate in production as much as possible. Trying to fit that in with TWICE’s group schedules was challenging, but I’m proud of how it all went.

From an outside perspective, it really does feel like you’ve been touring forever! What are you most looking forward to once this tour wraps?

Sana: I want to put my carry-on luggage away. I keep having to take something out once and just putting it back in — we’re always packing and unpacking. I’m really looking forward to that, right everyone?

And I wanted to check in on some of the things we discussed back in 2021. Jihyo, you mentioned wanting to surf, and, Sana, you mentioned picking up horseback riding despite your allergies. How has that been going?

Sana: Yes, I actually did once!

Jihyo: Really?

Sana: Last year during our break, I did it once in Japan and wanted to continue. But then didn’t do it for a whole year again after that [ laughs ].

Jihyo: Last fall or winter, I went with Jeongyeon to surf at sunrise. But it was freezing, and I thought to myself, “Never again!” and I quit [ laughs ].

Since it’s still early in the year, what do you want to try for in 2024?

Nayeon: I have one. I totally have one. I want to become the best driver [ laughs ].

Momo: I’ll look forward to it!

Nayeon: I want to master driving this year.

Jihyo: I’m really looking forward to that.

Jeongyeon: I have one, too. I want to get a license for operating larger vehicles. [Editor’s note: Korea has separate licenses for trucks, trailers, etc.] For camping. And I want to try operating a forklift [ laughs ].

Sana: For a future career opportunity.

Jeongyeon: I want to learn a trade. For my future.

I’m sure you won’t need to!

[ Laughs .]

Anyone else?

Chaeyoung: I want to become better at guitar.

Nayeon: Don’t lie! [ laughs ]

Chaeyoung: I’m taking lessons. I had two lessons during this break [ laughs ].

Sana: That’s a lot!

Chaeyoung: I want to work hard at it.

Jihyo: Tzuyu, what about you?

Tzuyu: I want to get my driver’s license, too.

Chaeyoung: Should we go together?

Tzuyu: I want to get better at English, too.

True crime podcasts are popular in the U.S., particularly among women and those with less formal education

True crime stands out as the most common topic of top-ranked podcasts in the United States, according to a new Pew Research Center study . So who, exactly, listens to true crime podcasts?

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to explore U.S. adults’ views of and experiences with podcasts as a part of the news and information landscape.

To examine the ways Americans get news and information in a digital age, the Center surveyed 5,132 U.S. adults from Dec. 5 to 11, 2022. Everyone who completed the survey is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the  ATP’s methodology .

In the questionnaire, U.S. adults who said they are currently listening to at least one podcast were asked in an open-ended question to write in the name of the podcast that they listen to most. If respondents answered with the names of more than one podcast, only the first one was coded. In total, 1,563 open-end responses were coded.

Here are  the questions used  in the survey, along with responses, and  its methodology .

As part of the study, the Center also took a close look at key characteristics of top-ranked podcasts. Researchers identified these top podcasts by analyzing daily lists of the top 200 podcasts on Apple Podcasts and Spotify from April 1 to Sept. 30, 2022. The average chart position of each podcast that appeared on either list was calculated, and the top 300 podcasts from each site were included as top podcasts. Researchers identified 451 top podcasts by combining these lists so that podcasts that were among the top 300 on both sites were not counted twice.

A team of trained researchers then analyzed these 451 podcasts to determine podcast affiliation, topic, format and other key characteristics of each podcast. Additional data on episode length and frequency was analyzed after collecting data on all episodes published in 2022 through the Spotify and Apple Podcasts application programming interface.

Here are the detailed tables for this analysis of 451 top-ranked podcasts, and the methodology .

A bar chart that shows demographic profile and party identification of true crime podcast listeners.

Overall, 34% of U.S. adults who have listened to a podcast in the past year say they regularly listen to podcasts about true crime, according to a 2022 Center survey . But some demographic groups are more likely than others to do so:

  • Among U.S. podcast listeners, women are almost twice as likely as men to regularly listen to true crime podcasts (44% vs. 23%).
  • Podcast listeners with less formal education are more likely than those with higher levels of education to listen to shows about true crime. Looking at podcast listeners who have a high school diploma or less, 45% regularly listen to true crime podcasts. A third of podcast listeners with some college education say the same, as do 27% of those who have at least a bachelor’s degree. This pattern persists even when accounting for age.
  • While women are more likely to listen to true crime podcasts overall, women with lower levels of formal education are the most likely to do so. A majority (57%) of women with a high school diploma or less say they regularly listen to true crime podcasts, compared with 34% of men with the same education level and 36% of women with a college degree.
  • Younger podcast listeners are more likely than the oldest listeners to report tuning in to shows about true crime. Among U.S. podcast listeners ages 18 to 29, 41% regularly listen to true crime podcasts. This compares with 15% of listeners ages 65 and older.

A bar chart showing that across education levels, women are more likely to listen to true crime podcasts than men.

The Center’s new study finds that true crime is the most common topic among top-ranked podcasts – defined as those with the highest average daily rankings on Apple’s and Spotify’s lists of top podcasts in a six-month period in 2022. Almost a quarter (24%) of these top podcasts are primarily about true crime.

True crime podcasts are often investigations into murders, scandals and other criminal events. Serial, which helped to popularize the genre , is a series that provides in-depth investigations into particular crimes or events. Due to its popularity, Serial is often credited for drawing national attention to the conviction of Adnan Syed.

Other top-ranked podcasts in this genre include 20/20, Crime Junkie, Dateline NBC, and My Favorite Murder. Crime Junkie and Dateline NBC are among the most popular podcasts cited by podcast listeners who gave a name for the show they tune in to most – 1% named each of these podcasts.

While true crime is the most common topic among top-ranked podcasts, it is not the most popular topic Americans report listening to, according to the Center’s recent survey . About a third of podcast listeners in the United States (34%) say they regularly listen to podcasts about true crime.

Other topics – such as comedy (47%) and entertainment, pop culture and the arts (46%) – are more popular than true crime.

While the Center’s survey did not specifically ask why podcast listeners turn to specific topics such as true crime, we can look at the reasons that people said they listen to podcasts in general – and among those who said the podcast they listen to most is true crime.

Of those who said their main podcast is about true crime, the most common major reasons for listening were for entertainment (85%) and to have something to listen to while doing something else (84%). They were less likely to cite reasons like learning, hearing other people’s opinions, or staying up to date about current events.
