Merlier wins UAE Tour stage 1 photo finish as echelons blow-up GC

Belgian beats Ewan and Cavendish as Evenepoel gains time on key rivals

Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) beat Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Dstny) by the tightest of margins to win to stage 1 of the UAE Tour , while his teammate Remco Evenepoel stole an early march on his GC rivals on an opening day of racing blown apart by crosswinds and echelons.

Ewan threw his bike at the finish line at the same time as Merlier as they sprinted for the win from the 13-man break. The Australian was initially convinced he had taken the decision, raising an arm in celebration after he crossed the line. The photo-finish image instead suggested a rare dead heat but after lengthy deliberations, the UCI commissaires eventually gave the verdict to Merlier.

Mark Cavendish (Astana-Qazaqstan) took third ahead of Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma), while Evenepoel stole a march by placing eighth and gaining 51 seconds on the bulk of the overall contenders. Tuesday’s stage 17.3km team time trial will surely give the overall classification a further shake-up.

The decisive split of stage 1 took shape with 29 km to go, with Soudal-QuickStep and Lotto-Dstny combining to force an echelon.

Evenepoel, inevitably, was safely aboard, and he found allies of circumstance in the group, including Luke Plapp (Ineos Grenadiers) and Pello Bilbao, who had three Bahrain Victorious teammates for company.

Their combined efforts saw the break enter the final 20 km with 40 seconds in hand on the chasers, and they would extend that lead beyond a minute as they hurtled towards the finish. By then, Movistar were leading the chase in the main peloton on behalf of Fernando Gaviria, but theirs was a forlorn effort, with the escapees now firmly out of reach.

Evenepoel was the break’s driving force on the run-in and with two kilometres to go, he even briefly pulled Plapp and Bilbao clear with him, before Ewan’s teammate Jarrad Drizners restored some order.

Bert Van Lerberghe (Soudal-QuickStep) led Merlier into the final corner but the Belgian champion had Ewan parked on his wheel as he kicked for the line. Ewan drew level in the closing metres, but he couldn’t get past Merlier and both threw their bikes at the line in desperation. Cavendish was further back after struggling to find a clear run at the line in their slipstream.

Merlier and Ewan sportingly shook hands and stood together beyond the finish. They both rode to the podium area and reviewed the photo-finish image, as race officials seemed unable to reach a decision and perhaps considered deciding on a dead heat.

After an interminable wait, however, the jury gave the nod to Merlier, who commiserated with Ewan before making his way to the podium.

“I was not sure,” Merlier admitted afterwards. “I know I did a good jump in the end, and I knew when I started my sprint that it was a good sprint, but Caleb was coming from the wheel and you know he’s a dangerous guy if he is in the wheel. In the end it was really close, I had to wait for fifteen minutes to decide who won.”

The general classification picture looks a little clearer after the all-action opening stage, with Evenepoel, Plapp and Bilbao firmly established as the men to beat after they picked up 51 seconds on the peloton.

Above all, it was a most disappointing start for UAE Team Emirates in their home race. With Tadej Pogacar preferring to start his season in Spain, new signings Adam Yates and Jay Vine line out as leaders but they will rue handing Evenepoel a head start like this ahead of Tuesday’s team time trial.

Plapp, however, gently rejected the idea that the list of potential winners was already down to just three names.

“It’s a long way to go, and there’s a lot of crosswinds,” he said. “Of course, UAE are on the backfoot, and they’ll try something, so anything can happen.”

How it unfolded

Remco Evenepoel rode in the UAE Tour echelons like a veteran

With the wind gently gusting up to 30 kph and exposed roads all the way, vigilance was the byword at the start at Al Dhafra Castle.

“You have to be always awake,” Evenepoel warned before the start. “It’s 150k of 200% focus.”

The world champion was as good as his word, present and correct when the race split up in the opening kilometres, with the fissures in the peloton forced by a combination of crosswinds and crashes.

Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) was among the unfortunate fallers and though the American was able to remount and continue, the incident left him on the back foot for most of the stage.

He wasn’t alone. Within 10km, the race had been sundered into three distinct and very spectacular echelons, with Evenepoel, Plapp, Bilbao and Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) among the 20-strong group in front. Cavendish was initially there but then hit a stone and dropped to join Ewan, Merlier and Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) in the second group on the road.

UAE Tour

The Evenepoel group’s lead over Yates et all oscillated between 30 seconds and a minute for much of the next 100 km, while the third group on the road, which included Jay Vine, seemed irretrievably distanced at some four minutes.

Plapp and Bilbao picked up bonus seconds at the first intermediate sprint, while Evenepoel claimed a pair of seconds for himself at the second, but that looked set to be the sum total of their gains when the front two groups merged with 50 km remaining.

Indeed, such was the drop in intensity that the Vine group began to close in rapidly on the leaders, with their deficit quickly shrinking from four minutes to less than one.

However that lull created its own risks.

“We raced full gas for 100k and then it came back, and I think everyone got a false sense of security and thought the race was finished,” said Plapp, who was wise to the danger when Soudal-QuickStep and Lotto-Dstny wound up the pace with 29 km to go.

The Australian joined Evenepoel, Van Lerberghe, Merlier, Cavendish, Cees Bol (Astana-Qazaqstan), Kooij, Bilbao, Nikias Arndt, Phil Bauhaus, Matevz Goveka (Bahrain Victorious), Ewan and Jarrad Drizners (Lotto-Dstny) at the front, and their smooth collaboration would carry them all the way to the finish.

The stage ended in a close sprint but so much else happened on the first day of racing at the UAE Tour. It was a breathless day of racing, with similar crosswinds expected for Tuesday’s team time trial and the rest of the week.

Close-up official photo finish shows Merlier beat Ewan by tiniest margin at UAE Tour

uae tour stage 1 photo finish

This official close-up image from the photo finish camera at UAE Tour stage 1 shows just how close it was between Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) and Caleb Ewan (Lotto Dstny), with Merlier winning by a whisker.

Merlier’s wheel, at the top of the image, just about touches the red finish line before Ewan’s, though it was incredibly close at the end of 151km of racing to Al Mirfa today.

Both men were in the 12-rider group that stayed away to contest the stage victory. Ewan believed he had won the stage and celebrated, with Merlier initially congratulating him. However, it then became clear neither rider was absolutely certain who had won once the euphoria of the finish had passed.

TV viewers were left waiting for a very prolonged period before Merlier was declared winner. Many social media users were unable to call the outcome based on the first photo finish image released from the race and circulated online. However, this close-up image settles it.

“I’m really happy with this win,” said Belgian champion Merlier after being confirmed winner and the first race leader of UAE Tour 2023. “I recently became a father and that gave me a lot of motivation.

“When the race is hard, I’m one of the strongest in the end and I believe I can win. We did a good job as a team, and also for the general classification. We were also racing for Remco (Evenepoel) today,” he added of his world champion team mate who was in the winning breakaway that gained 51 seconds on the peloton.

“He was the strongest. He brought us to the win. Last year I had to wait for Tirreno-Adriatico to get my first victory, now I already have two victories this season – one the road and one in cyclo-cross.”

uae tour stage 1 photo finish

Ewan said he was pleased to get back to the front of the race after an early puncture; flatting in the opening 2km as Bahrain Victorious was already driving the pace and the race was splintering in the crosswinds.

“I wouldn’t do anything different, really,” the Australian said of the final sprint after making the breakaway. “I was almost fast enough but apparently not quite enough.

“Obviously, it’s disappointing to miss out on the stage win with such a narrow margin. But the main thing to take away is the fact that I was up there, which shows the good form I’m in and it’s only promising for the next sprint stages this week.”

2024 UAE Tour Stage 1 | Results and Report

In a display of sheer sprinting dominance, Tim Merlier of Soudal Quick-Step claimed his eighth victory of 2024 at the opening stage of the UAE Tour. The seasoned Belgian rider left no room for doubt this time, crossing the finish line with several bike lengths to spare, unlike last year’s tight photo-finish.

The stage, stretching from Al Dhafra Walk to Liwa, remained relatively tranquil until the final kilometers, where the pace surged on the wide roads leading to the finish. While crosswinds were anticipated throughout the day, they only made a decisive appearance in the closing stretch, challenging riders to time their moves effectively, especially as the road inclined in the last 500 meters.

Despite losing some of his lead-out support, Merlier maintained composure amidst the chaotic finale. As other sprinters launched their efforts prematurely, Merlier powered down the right side of the road, executing a breathtaking acceleration that saw him effortlessly surge past his rivals and secure a commanding victory. This triumph marks Merlier’s third win of the year, following successes at the Saudi Tour.

Reflecting on his performance, Merlier expressed satisfaction with his first victory in a World Tour race this season. “The UAE Tour is a prestigious event, and securing a win here is always special,” he remarked. “Although the race was chaotic, I trusted my instincts and chose the right moment to make my move within the final 500 meters. I had the confidence in my legs and the speed to make it count.”

Merlier’s triumph not only clinched him the stage victory but also propelled him into the overall and points classification lead. With this 14th victory donning the Soudal Quick-Step jersey, Merlier looks ahead with anticipation, already eyeing the next opportunities that lie ahead in the UAE Tour.

2023 UAE TOUR STAGE 1 RESULTS

Soudal-Quickstep’s Belgian rider Tim Merlier won the first stage of cycling’s UAE Tour on Monday, pipping Lotto Dstny’s Caleb Ewan in a sprint finish. The two riders finished shoulder to shoulder prompting a 10-minute delay as the race organizers pored over the photo finish in a bid to split them. They opted against calling it a dead heat and gave Merlier, 30, the win by the slimmest of margins.

“I was not sure,” Merlier said afterwards.

“I know I did a good jump in the end, and I knew when I started my sprint that it was a good sprint.

“But Caleb was coming from the wheel and you know he’s a dangerous guy if he is in the wheel. In the end it was really close.”

Astana Qazaqstan Team’s Mark Cavendish was third after a windy ride of 94 miles on the United Arab Emirates’ northern coast. It was a poor day for home side UAE Emirates as their team leader, the newly signed Adam Yates, had his chances of winning slip away in a cross wind. Instead Merlier’s team-mate and compatriot Remco Evenepoel is now hot favorite to win this Tour after his power led an attack that dropped the entire peloton with a 51 second gap.

A forlorn-looking Yates blamed the desert wind.

“We were actually the only guys in front which means we had to use a little bit more energy fighting for position and fighting the wind. In the end, we didn’t have the legs,” said Yates after other teams refused to join the bid to catch up.

Evenepoel is both world champion and Vuelta a Espana title holder and is sixth overall, thanks to 51 seconds plus a bonus after finishing eighth on the day.

“That was a windy and good start of the week here,” said Evenepoel. “Strong teamwork finished off by @MerlierTim!

“Focus on tomorrow’s TTT,” he added before Tuesday’s second of seven stages, referring to the team time trial over 17.2km up the coast in Khalifa Port.

UAE Team Emirates’ double Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar is sitting out his outfit’s home event. The 24-year-old Slovenian chose instead to start his season by winning the Vuelta a Andalucia over the weekend.

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

PREVIEW | UAE Tour 2024 stage 1 - Sprinter battle between Cavendish, Kooij, Merlier, Groves, Jakobsen, Groenewegen, Bennett, Welsford, Gaviria,...

Preview . Stage 1 of the UAE Tour can see echelons, but without a doubt will see a mythical sprint battle including the likes of Mark Cavendish, Olav Kooij , Tim Merlier , Sam Welsford and many more who seek the first race lead.

The desert stage. The first part (north-south direction) is approximately 45 km long, on one wide and straight road. After reaching Liwa, the race enters a zone of very steep dunes, which make up most of the stage. A series of climbs and descents leads to the Moreeb Dune, where the race will make two laps of the Moreeb Dune circuit (18.1 km each lap), marked by fairly steep climbs and descents with double-digit gradients. Then it's back to Liwa for the finish. The stage is on wide, straight roads with good pavement.

PREVIEW | UAE Tour 2024 - Echelons forecasted; four bunch sprints and GC battle led by UAE's Adam Yates, Brandon McNulty and Jay Vine

PREVIEW | UAE Tour 2024 stage 1 - Sprinter battle between Cavendish, Kooij, Merlier, Groves, Jakobsen, Groenewegen, Bennett, Welsford, Gaviria,...

The finale however is not the typical UAE Tour dash to the line. This one will not be fast, the final 500 meters average 6% and it does rise up a little more than that to the line. An explosive and difficult sprint, in which the best will have to make quite a long effort to take the win.

The Weather

PREVIEW | UAE Tour 2024 stage 1 - Sprinter battle between Cavendish, Kooij, Merlier, Groves, Jakobsen, Groenewegen, Bennett, Welsford, Gaviria,...

Strong wind from the northeast. Exposed cross-tailwinds right from the starting line and over the first hour of racing has the potential to decimate the peloton. There will be no relaxing here and echelons are, dare I say, likely. However they may be discouraged by the fact that the riders then enter a hilly dune area, and return to face headwind. The finishing straight should have a crosswind, it can be tricky to manage specially with the uphill grades.

Profiles & Route UAE Tour 2024

The Favourites

Sam Welsford - The man of the moment - in January. Sam Welsford's time with BORA started off on the right foot with three victories at the Tour Down Under. With Danny van Poppel and Ryan Mullen in front of him he may find himself in the head of the peloton at the right time. The flat sprints he can handle, but I do have questions on whether he'll hold a one-minute effort with the best.

Olav Kooij - Kooij in my opinion is the ideal candidate for this opening sprint stage because believe it or not, most sprinters in the race cannot climb. The Dutchman is one of them, proven several times in the past, and done so very well at the European Championships for example. I do not doubt for a second that Visma will be caught out in the winds even with a modest lineup, Kooij has the speed but also the punchiness to finish off a sprint like this.

Mark Cavendish - On the other side we've got Mark Cavendish. Michael Morkov is here, but I think they'll aim more for the pan-flat sprints. Uphill I think he will struggle and the leadout may not help too much. In Colombia he won a stage but it was not convincing, but I do not discard a win later in the week.

Final startlist UAE Tour with Mark Cavendish, Adam Yates, Brandon McNulty, Sam Welsford, Ben O'Connor, Jay Vine and Tim Merlier

Tim Merlier - Merlier is known to start off races very strong on the first day and was the winner of the opening day last year. At AlUla he sprinted to victory in a similar effort, quite well. A good mix, the Belgian can certainly continue Quick-Step's successful run through the Middle East.

Dylan Groenewegen - Groenewegen is in the same scenario as Cavendish, but last year at the Tour de France he proved to improve on the climbing. Certainly he's climbing as best as he's been ever, if he has the same form he can certainly sprint to victory here.

Fabio Jakobsen - Jakobsen is another pure sprinter who will not fancy the rise to the line. A strong contender for victory but mostly for the flat sprints. DSM have him and Tobias Lund Andresen who can fight for a result, if there is full commitment and the pieces fit into place, the two can work together for a strong result no doubt.

TV Guide - Where and when to watch UAE Tour 2024

Kaden Groves - The first of Alpecin's four leaders begins his season. Kaden Groves proved his status last year with some quality victories. None was this early in the year however. With no racing in the legs and likely the classics as a big focus, the Australian may not have his best form. If he does however, he will enjoy such type of sprint.

This is a highly strong sprinter field and honestly there are victories contenders even outside of all the names above. The likes of Juan Sebastián Molano, Phil Bauhaus, Fernando Gaviria and who knows... Sam Bennett who is looking to start off his time with AG2R in a good note. Four days for these men to succeed but the earlier the better.

Expect also the likes of Arvid de Kleijn, Simone Consonni, Arne Marit, Stanislaw Aniolkowski, Elia Viviani, Pascal Ackermann and Jakub Mareczko to also be eager to perform. The uphill sprint can open up space for surprises.

Lennert Van Eetvelt wins the final stage of the 2024 UAE Tour

Lennert Van Eetvelt ( Lotto Dstny ) took the biggest victory of his career to win stage 7 and the final overall standings at the 2024 UAE Tour .

The Belgian attacked on the final slopes of Jebel Hafeet with 1.7km to go and finished clear of the chase group that included several pre-race favourites. Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) finished second on the stage at 22 seconds, with Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) in third.

In the final overall standings Van Eetvelt finished just two seconds clear of O'Connor, with Bilbao completing the podium at 11 seconds in arrears.

It was a stage to forget for UAE Team Emirates . The home team came into the stage with hopes of taking the title and sat first and second overall through Jay Vine and Brandon McNulty but the American cracked on the final climb before Vine slipped out of contention soon after.

Van Eetvelt, 22, came into the final stage of this year's race sitting in ninth overall at 37 seconds and few recognised the Belgian as a potential GC winner before the final climb began. However the young Belgian timed his move to perfection, allowing the likes of Bilbao and O'Connor to trade accelerations before latching onto a key attack with 2.1km to go.

With 1.7km to go and leader on the road O'Connor starting to suffer and fixate on Bilbao, Van Eetvelt struck for him. A late chase from the remnants of the front group failed to make an impression with Van Eetvelt taking the win, and the bonus seconds to take a well-deserved but surprising win.

"Unbelievable, I cannot be believe it. This morning everyone was telling me just go for everything, try to win GC, you can do it and I was like 'come on guys we have to stay realistic. I'm still far behind, a lot of the world's best guys are still there'. But this was the plan, this was what I had in my head and I cannot believe that I pulled it off," the stage and GC winner said at the finish.

Crosswinds and break provide early entertainment

The final stage of the UAE Tour was always destined to come down to a dogfight at the summit of Jebel Hafeet, especially with 14 riders separated by under a minute and vital WorldTour points up for grabs.

The early break was formed by veteran Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) alongside Jonas Rickaert and Silvan Dillier (Alpecin - Deceuninck), and Mark Stewart (Team Corratec - Vini Fantini).

The quartet built up an extension of close to nine minutes before the GC teams began to chase but several sections of crosswinds saw the gap drastically tumble to a more manageable four minutes inside the final 50km.

At one point Bilbao and several other GC riders found themselves in a second chasing group after one particularly strenuous crosswind section but with 37km to go the main field regrouped. Out front, the leaders ploughed on but with the final climb approaching their advantage dipped to within two minutes with 20km to go.

The Jebel Hafeet climb, 10.9km in length with a steeper gradient at 6.7%, blew the break to pieces almost immediately with just Buchmann and Buchmann clear as Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team set the pace for the peloton in a bid to dislodge UAE Team Emirates from the leader’s red jersey.

The French team could hardly believe their luck with McNulty, who started third overall, cracked almost immediately and within just a few minutes Vine followed suit. In between those two instances, Mikkel Bjerg briefly set the pace, but when he was called back by Vine the writing was on the wall, with the Australian succumbing to the relentless pace with 7.2km to go.

That left O’Connor as the virtual leader on the road and while Buchmann still held a one-minute leader after dropping Dillier, it was clear that the fight for the stage and the GC would come down to the dozen or so riders still left in O’Connor’s group.

However, just as with UAE Team Emirates, O’Connor’s team quickly began to falter with Bilbao shredding the GC group with his first of many accelerations. A volley of attacks soon followed, with Bilbao striking out for a second time with 3.7km to go. Another 400m up the road and the Bahrain rider kicked again but each move was quickly nullified by O’Connor. Max Poole had his attack wrenched back soon after and with 3km to go Buchmann was eventually reeled in.

Several more attacks followed with Carlos Verona making two digs before Bilbao went for a third time on the steepest section with 2.8km to go. O’Connor was slow to respond this time and wisely waited for the climb to ease before catching his main rival but with 2.1km remaining Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal Quick-Step), Michael Storer (Tudor Pro Cycling), and Van Eetvelt jumped clear. Just when it looked as though the race was still in the balance Van Eetvelt kicked again and soared away with 1.7km to go.

Storer, O’Connor and Bilbao all took turns leading the chase but there was no denying Van Eetvelt the biggest victory of his young career.

Olav Kooij clinched Stage 5 in a thrilling sprint to the finishing line to deny Tim Merlier back-to-back and a third win in five days at the UAE Tour on Friday.

The Dutch rider from Visma-Lease A Bike reversed the previous day’s result over the Belgian rider in a photo finish to the 182-kilometre Fujairah stage from Al Aqah to Umm Al Quwain.

Kooij sprinted off the wheel of Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), who had a strong lead-out from Michael Morkov but was unable to take it to the line, leaving Kooij to surge past the Manxman on the right-hand side of the road.

Kooij’s closest challengers initially appeared to be Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Sam Welsford (Bora-Hansgrohe) until winner of the first and fourth stages, Merlier, came out from further down the pack and into the open road on the left.

The Soudal Quick-Step rider threw everything at it in a tight finish with neither rider totally sure who had won.

“I didn't know that I was the winner so I was very happy to be declared the winner from the photo finish,” Kooij, 22, said soon after result was announced.

“After the first two sprints I got better but you need everything right to win. I tried to not get too much wind in the finale and a good position at the last roundabout.

“I thought I was maybe a bit far but I managed to follow Mark Cavendish on the right. Luckily there was a little gap and I could pass everyone.

“My stage win at Paris-Nice last year was very nice but the field of sprinters here is very strong so it makes it another very nice one. Now I'm excited to see what I will be able to do at my first Grand Tour, the Giro d'Italia, after this good start of the season.”

Team Visma-Lease a Bike's Dutch cyclist Olav Kooij, left, wins the fifth stage of the UAE Tour. AFP

Welsford joined them on the podium, while the likes of Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco-AlUla) and Fabio Jakobsen (dsm-firmenich-PostNL) had to settle for minor places. Cavendish slipped outside the top 10, from which more big names were absent, including: Sam Bennett (Decathlon-AG2R), Fernando Gaviria (Movistar), Sebastián Molano (UAE Team Emirates) and Pascal Ackermann (Israel-Premier Tech).

UAE Team Emirates’ Jay Vine finished safely in the bunch – and even did a stint at the front in the finale – to retain the red jersey as overall leader, with the only general classification (GC) change being Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto Dstny) hopping into the top 10 via the breakaway.

“I came to the UAE Tour with a lot of training in the legs. Today it wasn’t super stressful but always something can happen,” Vine said at the post-race conference.

“Passed the last corner, everyone was rushing to the front. I enjoyed being in the lead today even more than yesterday. Riding at the front in the last 10 kilometres is the less scary place and it’s always exciting to race ahead of bunch sprints.

“I was trying to keep myself safe and me being safe, it also helped our two riders set to go for the sprint. It’s good to be in the red jersey for another day.”
