Best Time To Visit Delhi

It’s easy to decide when to visit Delhi ! The city is the kind of holiday destination you definitely want to visit in the shoulder seasons, spring and fall. Spring (February – March) is sunny and pleasant without getting too hot. Fall (September – December) is similarly lovely!

Like most places you’ll encounter while backpacking India , Delhi doesn’t even really have a winter. It has a monsoon season (July – mid-September) and in this period, the weather is wet, humid and hot. Unless you’re used to this kind of weather, we recommend you avoid traveling during this time, as it can get very uncomfortable!

Still, most of the year is very hot and full of sunshine. Tourists travel to Delhi anytime between October and March, when all the heavy rains are gone, temperatures are milder, and the land is lush and beautiful.

Weekends in Delhi are little different to the rest of the week, and more attractions are closed on a Monday than over the weekend.

Deciding where to stay in Delhi can be tough as the city is so damned big. If you want to be right in the middle of the action, find accommodation in Lajpat Nagar. This colorful neighborhood is where you’ll find the sprawling, busy, brightly colored Central Market, one of Delhi’s greatest markets and one of the stops on our Delhi itinerary!

Situated in South Delhi, this is a great place to have as your home-base. It’s close to everything, and you’ll never be more than a few steps away from some great restaurants and bars, as well as family-run eateries and unique stores. It’s not for the faint-hearted, as it’s always busy! But if you’re looking to meet people and have loads of fun, you’re sure to do that here.

For something a little more secluded (a tough feat on any day in Delhi), the best place to stay in Delhi, is Lodhi Colony. This neighborhood is a little more upscale, as well as quieter! This was the last residential area built during the British reign and has a unique and special atmosphere. There’s a lot to see and enjoy here but in a more peaceful environment.

Other great neighborhoods are Old Delhi, where you can connect with the city’s history and enjoy quirky shops, beautiful architecture, and Hauz Khas Village. This neighborhood is where you can experience Delhi’s medieval history!

So, as you can see, there are a great many fantastic options for your vacation in Delhi. Just be sure to stay central if you only have 3 days in Delhi!

Best Luxury Hotel in Delhi –  The Imperial

Beautiful decor and luxurious facilities, The Imperial is one of Delhi’s top hotels. Relax in the pool or with the world-class spa facilities! The hotel has seven restaurants, yoga classes, a book shop, and babysitting services. It is the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate while remaining close to all the action.

The best way to get around the city is with the Delhi Metro. It’s quicker than every other mode of transport, and cheaper too. The trains come every 5-10 minutes, and the first coach is always reserved for women. So if you’re a woman traveling Delhi alone, you can chill comfortably here.

Be prepared for crammed coaches during rush hours, which differ according to the day! If you want to avoid the coach at these times, Delhi also has that handy world-wide app, Uber. If you don’t want it to get too pricey, you can even get an Uber Pool.

Of course, one of our favorite ways to get around any city is by walking. Stroll between the stops that are close together, and experience much more of the city than you would any other way! You’ll see so many interesting and exciting things as you explore by foot.

You can grab a city map at your accommodation, and plot out your Delhi itinerary stops before you set off. And if your feet get tired at any point of the day, hail a rickshaw, and experience another of Delhi’s cultural icons as you head for your next stop!

Wondering what to do in Delhi? We’ve got all the best for you. The majority of day 1 in Delhi is spent in the most historic part of the city, Old Delhi! Explore the structures which have formed Delhi, and enjoy the vibrancy of markets and mosques.

Day 1 / Stop 1 – Stroll through Old Delhi

• Why it’s awesome: It’s where you can enjoy the epitome of traditional Indian culture and liveliness!
• Cost: Free!
• Food nearby: One of the many great eateries where you can enjoy some local favorites is Jung Bahadur Kachori Wala

Founded in 1639 as a walled city, Old Delhi is a treasure trove of historic attractions and beautiful little details. It’s always bustling and colorful, the streets winding through gorgeous architecture and urban areas!

One of India’s best-known traditional urban environments, you’ll learn more about India, both contemporary and historic, right here. A number of our stops are in the area, but we suggest you start day 1 in Delhi strolling through and having a look around! It’s chaotic and jam-packed, loads of fun, as long as you’re ready for a crowd.

Once named Shahjahanabad and the capital of the Mughal empire, it was filled with mansions, mosques, and gardens. It remains Delhi’s symbolic heart, and there’s always something going on.

Day 1 / Stop 2 – Do some spice shopping at Khari Baoli

• Why it’s awesome: It’s one of the world’s biggest spice markets
• Food nearby: Grab something from the incredible street food stalls

After exploring the greater Old Delhi, head over to Asia’s best and biggest spice market! If you’re spending more than 2 days in Delhi, and you plan on doing your own cooking, you should definitely try a few spices! Many of these you will find nowhere else. You can also grab some dried fruit and unusual snacks to enjoy on the rest of your two days in Delhi.

It’s an immersive experience and a sensory overload, you’ll want to smell everything! You’ll want to taste everything too, but don’t try that. You can, however, take lots of photos, and barter with the tradespeople. Many of whom have run these stalls for generations.

This vast market has been operating since the 17th century, a historic part of Delhi culture. It may be just a market, but it’s an authentic Indian experience you won’t forget anytime soon!

Insider Tip: The market is closed on Sundays, and runs from 10 am to 8 pm. We’ve made it our second stop so that you’re here before the crowds and the heat of midday!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Visit the Tomb of Safdarjung

• Why it’s awesome: Peaceful, monumental and lovely, it’s the perfect stop after all that exciting busyness
• Cost: $2 USD
• Food nearby: If you don’t feel like street food, visit the nearby Sugar Blossoms for sweet treats and a boutique feel

Displaying the grandeur of the Mughal era, this iconic tomb was built in 1754 and houses Nawab Safdarjung. It was the last monumental tombs and garden from the Mughals, a sandstone and marble mausoleum!

One of the things we love about this tomb is how relatively small the crowds tend to be! It’s beautiful and historic, but it was only recently renovated, leaving it rather unknown to tourists. So you can stroll slowly through and admire the artistry without the crowds you’ll find at most Delhi attractions! This makes it the perfect stop after the bustling market.

The tomb itself is nestled in a square garden with a lovely garden, a library, and pavilions. Catch your breath here and relax on the grass before setting off to the next stop on your Delhi itinerary!

Day 1 / Stop 4 – Explore Qutub Minar

• Why it’s awesome: It’s one of the most famous Delhi points of interest, and for good reason!
• Cost: $7 USD
• Food nearby: For something a little different, enjoy a late lunch at the Armenian restaurant, Lavaash By Saby!

Built in the 13th century, this curious tower dominates the nearby skyline. 73-meters high, the tower is made up of alternatingly angular and rounded flutings. It’s surrounded by two historic mosques, one of which is the oldest in Northern India!

It was built as a victory tower and is made up of red sandstone recycled from various temples. It’s one of the most popular Delhi points of interest, and an absolute must-see.

A lot has happened with this unique tower. Three floors were added years after its construction, and at one point, lightning struck and broke off the top floor!

There is not even certainty about who it’s dedicated to – a Sufi saint, the father-in-law of the man who commissioned it, or the muezzins who used it for the call to prayer. But whatever it’s dedicated to, it’s a beautiful and impressive monument to India’s rich and colorful history!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – See the presidential palace, Rashtrapati Bhavan

• Why it’s awesome: It’s the presidential palace, with so much to see and famously beautiful gardens
• Cost: $1 USD per circuit
• Food nearby: Grab some Indian comfort food at the nearby MP Club & Canteen South Avenue

For something a little more modern but just as ornate and beautiful, visit the Rashtrapati Bhavan! Built for the Viceroy of India, this massive mansion is an experience of Indian stateliness and wealth – something you may see little of in contemporary Delhi.

The mansion has a full 340 floors! It also has 190 acres of curated garden you could get lost in. you can join tours in 3 circuits of the mansion – one of the main building, one of the museum, and one of the extensive gardens. You can choose what you’re most interested in and enjoy a tour of that, or join them all!

The gardens, in addition to curated spaces, include forest, parks, wilderness, and water bodies! You’ll see peacocks sauntering about, and other small animals and birds.

The museum includes invaluable artifacts of Indian heritage, art and culture! The mansion, of course, includes ornate halls, a massive library, and drawing rooms. There’s just so much to see!

If you’re spending the weekend in Delhi, you can even watch the changing of the guards, a tradition that remains from British rule. Timings for this change, so ask at the desk when you arrive or check for your dates!

Insider Tip: The three circuits are closed on Mondays, and with the exception of the museum circuit, on Wednesday too. Be sure to plan your Delhi itinerary around this!

Day 1 / Stop 6 – Marvel at India Gate

• Why it’s awesome: It’s an impressive monument in a lovely area
• Food nearby: Enjoy some fantastic Indian and Mughal cuisine at Gulati Restaurant

The perfect place to end off your first day in Delhi is India Gate! This war memorial is lit up at night – which is likely when you’ll see it, considering how full your day is! It stands as a memorial for the British Indian Army soldiers who died in WWI and the Second Anglo-Afghan War.

There are over 13,000 names inscribed on the gate. There is also a flame continuously burning as a memorial to the unknown soldier, all the men who died in battle, whose names are not marked down. It’s a beautiful memorial to a difficult time in human history, and one everyone will appreciate and respect.

Reflecting the styles of the Arc de Triomphe and older Greek memorial gates, the India Gate has put a unique twist on the style and is something all its own. Watch the sunset behind it and the lights go on to illuminate the structure!

Chhatarpur Temple | Akshardham Temple | Hauz Khas | Humayun’s Tomb | Lotus Temple | Red Fort | Chandni Chowk

On the second of your 2-day itinerary in Delhi, explore both modern and historic landmarks in the newer part of the city. End the day off with a visit to one of the world’s biggest market roads! Many of the stops can even be explored on a self-guided Delhi walking tour.

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Visit Chhatarpur Temple

• Why it’s awesome: It’s an icon of Delhi, massive, calming and impressive
• Food nearby: Get a casual, cozy breakfast at Dilip Momos

Dedicated to the Hindu goddess Katyayani, this magnificent temple is the perfect way to start day 2 in Delhi! It’s surrounded by trees and greenery, with a terrifically peaceful atmosphere – particularly, first thing in the morning!

There are many beautiful statues of the Hindu gods and goddesses in the temple. Walk through the temple grounds and enjoy the scenic calm.

The structure is very unusual, made almost entirely from marble. It is also one of the largest temples in the world! A full 60 acres with over 20 temples. You can spend hours here, but we recommend limiting yourself to 2-hours.

Be sure to explore the surrounding area a little! It’s an important biodiversity area, with lakes, exotic vegetation, and season waterfalls.

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Walk through Akshardham Temple

• Why it’s awesome: This is the biggest and best temple complex in India
• Food nearby: You can find something yummy at the Akshardham Complex Food Court

Akshardham sits on the banks of the river, an extensive complex with much more than a temple. The name means ‘divine abode of god’, and that high title is certainly reflected in the temple’s perfection and massive expense.

Spend hours here, exploring the themed gardens, a boat ride that takes you through the cultural history of Delhi, and watching a water show.

The main attraction, of course, remains the temple. Incredibly decorated, the pink sandstone and marble are carved with dancers, deities, animals, and plants.

You’ll also find over 100 life-sized elephant statues on the temple grounds! It’s an experience totally unlike any other temple pilgrimage, unique and wondrous.

Visit the hall of values to see life-size robotic displays of the life of Swaminarayan (the temple’s main deity). Stroll along the lake and explore Bharat Upavan, a garden filled with bronze sculptures of deities and others.

Insider Tip: Like many of the stops on our Delhi itinerary, the dress code here requires covered legs till the knee, and arms to the elbow. But if you aren’t dressed appropriately, a free sarong is available, so you don’t have to miss it!

Day 2 / Stop 3 – Enjoy the peace at Hauz Khas Complex

• Why it’s awesome: It’s an enchanting medieval village and mosque, completely different from the more contemporary stops
• Food nearby: Get some tea and cake at the quaint, kitsch Elma’s teashop and cafe

For a greater feel for historic India, visit the Hauz Khas Complex! This 13th-century village is the perfect place to see how people lived here during Medieval times. It’s relatively unknown, so you’re likely to spend your visit exploring with only a few others in a peaceful environment.

The complex includes a medieval seminary, a mosque, and a stone water tank. The lush wild garden compliments the historic structures, and makes you feel like you’re walking somewhere magical.

Insider Tip: The complex is closed to visitors every Monday, so if you’re here on this day, give this stop a skip. It’s better to visit over a weekend in Delhi.

Day 2 / Stop 4 – Stop at Humayun’s Tomb

• Why it’s awesome: It’s gorgeous, the inspiration behind the Taj Mahal!
• Cost: $9 USD
• Food nearby: Get some tasty late-afternoon kebabs at Yaseen kabab Corner

Built in 1570, this tomb has a great deal of cultural significance in India! It was the first garden-tomb in the country, and had a huge influence on architecture and style throughout the centuries.

The tomb is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has undergone extensive restorations to ensure that we can still visit it and admire the historic splendor for generations!

This is such a great place to take photos, and at the time you’ll be visiting (late afternoon), it is relatively quiet. You can join a guided tour to learn more about the history and influence of Humayun’s Tomb. Or just explore the grounds on your own and admire the beauty!

If you later visit the Taj Mahal, a stop here is even more important. You’ll really be able to see how this mausoleum inspired the later one. It’s the beginning of the Mughal architectural style that culminated in that iconic place!

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Pray at the Lotus Temple

• Why it’s awesome: A really unique design and joyful environment
• Food nearby: Enjoy a good meal and drinks at The Flying Saucer Cafe

This impressive and unique place is a wonder to visit! 27 marble flower petals make up the unusual structure, designed after the sacred lotus. It is a religious worshipping grounds for all faiths, so you can choose to pray there with people from all over the world and all religions!

If you do choose to go inside, you’ll get a quick brief on what to do – primarily, be quiet and respectful. You’ll also leave your shoes behind in a secure room. If you don’t, just take it in from the outside, and get a few shots!

Insider Tip: Like many of the stops, the Lotus Temple is closed on a Monday – when planning a trip to Delhi, we suggest you book your dates around this day. A weekend in Delhi is much better.

Day 2 / Stop 6 – Admire the Red Fort

• Why it’s awesome: It’s one of the top Delhi landmarks, massive and ornate
• Cost: $4 USD
• Food nearby: Enjoy a laid-back meal at Abdul Ghani Qureshi Kabab

Also called Lal Qal’ah, this Mughal fort complex is one of Delhi’s top attractions! It’s been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and should not be missed when touring Delhi!

Stroll through palaces and canals, baths, entertainment halls, ornate gardens and a beautifully decorated mosque – all in the Red Fort Complex! It’s a beautiful fusion of cultures and architectural traditions and is considered the peak of Mughal creativity.

It’s the perfect next stop, just a short walk away from the Tomb! You could spend the whole day here, exploring the different structures and gardens and admiring the little details. But since there’s so much to see in just 2 days in Delhi, we recommend a visit of 2-3 hours!

Day 2 / Stop 7 – Shop and eat at Chandni Chowk

• Why it’s awesome: It’s a massive, exciting market you could spend hours and hours exploring
• Food nearby: Get some traditional Indian ice cream at Kuremal Mohanlal Kulfiwale

End off day 2 in Delhi on the perfect note. It’s one of our favorite stops on the 2-day itinerary in Delhi! Right opposite Red Fort you’ll find this long busy street, one of the oldest and greatest markets in the city.

Chandi Chowk is a full-day market, but we love it in the evening when the atmosphere shifts and the bustling daytime visitors give way to the nighttime crowd.

This massive outdoor market has some of the best and most well-priced fabrics and Indian clothing you’ll find in Delhi! In fact, it has everything. It’s the perfect place to shop, eat, and enjoy the vibrant local culture.

It’s always crowded, so be prepared to nudge through some people when necessary. You’ll find huge bargains here, and some incredible food! Many of the stalls have been run by the same family in the same place for over 100 years. It’s an experience in tradition and changing culture.

Insider Tip: Keep cash on you! You’re not likely to find a card machine here, and you don’t want to miss out. Just make sure your bag is always closed and on the front of your body.

There’s still a lot to see in Delhi! So if you’re spending more than 2 days here, that’s wonderful. Our 3-day itinerary in Delhi has got you covered, to see everything possible!

Lodhi Gardens

• The gardens stretch for 90 acres!
• Historical monuments and ruins dot the extensive park
• The monuments are from the 14th-17th centuries, and everything is well-maintained

Developed by the British as a landscaped setting for the various monuments within it, Lodi Garden is gorgeous! It was once named Lady Willington Park but was renamed Lodhi Garden, after one of India’s great dynasties, when India gained its independence.

The garden is a lovely place to stroll and enjoy a picnic! Flowers line the walkways, and a great many trees stretch up to compete with the tall monuments.

The monuments in the garden are open to visitors, so you can explore them and admire the historic architecture and detail. You can even join a tour, and learn about the various structures from a local guide.

Be sure to bring your camera, and try to go early or late in the day! At these times, hardly anyone will be here. You can enjoy the monuments in silence, and get some exquisite photos with no one in sight!

The garden feels like an oasis in the middle of the city. It is located squarely in one of New Delhi’s busiest areas, but once you step in that green expanse, it feels immediately as if you are in the countryside. A countryside dotted with precious monuments and tombs!

Old Delhi Street Food Tasting Tour

• Experience the city in a unique way, tasting local street foods and snacks
• Travel by rickshaw and explore Delhi’s winding streets
• Enjoy a trip to the spice market and try new things

The best food tour in Delhi is definitely a street food tour! Indians enjoy many of their meals from street food stalls – they’re a huge part of the culture here. As such, it’s a great way to experience and learn about local life!

You can either tour the street food stalls yourself and give everything that looks exciting a go. Or you can join a guided tour and try what’s considered the best of the Delhi street food scene! Either option is great, and very different.

It’s a fully immersive experience, and you’ll move through the bustling market tasting sugary jalebis and famously good Dahi Vada ! Learn about the neighborhood’s history and traditions, both food-related and otherwise. India has such a unique and unusual cuisine history!

Thankfully, there’s just as much for vegetarians to enjoy as meat-eaters. However, if you do choose to tour the market yourself, consider avoiding meat, as food poisoning can occur. If you  join a tour, rest assured they choose their stops carefully with hygiene in mind.

Jump on a rickshaw and explore the area, traveling through the narrow streets with your enthusiastic local guide and a small group!

Or, if you go it alone, we still recommend you jump on a rickshaw! Just ask the rider to take you around the old walled city while you do a bit of digesting.

Old Delhi: 3-Hour Tuk-Tuk/Rickshaw Tour

• Explore all the main highlights of Old Delhi
• Ride past bazaars and temples in a tuk-tuk or bicycle rickshaw
• You’ll even participate in a community kitchen where you can get back and learn more about contemporary India

This is such a great way to see the city! Explore the historic Old Delhi on a rickshaw/tuk-tuk . The rickshaw has been a part of Indian transport for centuries and is one of the absolute best ways to experience Delhi.

Sit back and relax while your tour guide and rider shows you the sights and tells you a bit about their history and importance! Stop and find something beautiful at the market, and enjoy how your guide navigates the busy crowd to bring you comfortably through.

You’ll want your camera on this tour!

Visit Jama Masjid, Delhi’s largest mosque and a stop not yet on your itinerary for Delhi! This beautiful structure was built in 1650, and has remained one of India’s most massive mosques all these centuries. You’ll have time to tour the mosque a little before setting off to your next stop.

Ride through the largest spice market in Asia (and an earlier stop on your Delhi trip itinerary), Khari Baoli. You’ll even get to volunteer, if you choose to, at the langar, community kitchen service.

It’s a great way to experience India. Not only will you experience more of the local culture and way of life. You’ll also learn about Delhi’s history, and about the tenets of the various religions in this city, like Sikhism and the Jain religion!

National Museum of New Delhi

• Brilliant displays of historic artifacts, artworks, statues and sculptures
• The museum covers Indian history from ancient times until now
• Carefully curated, with great facilities and helpful staff

We’ve saved this incredible stop till now because you’d be best served by spending a full day here! The museum is a wonderful experience, with so many exhibitions, and all well-maintained.

India’s history is so vastly different to the more commonly known western societies. The art, cultures, religions and belief systems that have thrived here are unique, complex and beautiful. Celebrate and learn about them here, where you can find a wealth of knowledge in all fields!

Experience the artifacts at the museum’s Tactile Experience display! Created specially for the blind, the gallery has tactile replicas of some of the museum’s most interesting artifacts. So for once, you can touch what’s on display!

The jewelry display is exquisite, and the arms and armor gallery has so many artifacts, the like of which you’ll find nowhere else! The Central Asian Antiquities has over 12 000 objects from the 3rd to the 12th century AD – gathered from the Silk Roads.

India has such a rich history, with so many empires and dynasties holding power and influencing the culture and way of life. The opportunity to actually see the things used in war, and in everyday life back then, is truly wonderful. Especially after seeing the many incredible structures on your 3-day itinerary in Delhi!

Sri Bangla Sahib Gurudwara

• A beautifully peaceful place in the heart of Delhi
• Delhi’s most impressive and stunning Sikh religion temples
• Open 24/7, you can visit here at any time of day

Famous for its unique spirituality, hospitality, and gorgeous architecture, Sri Langa Sahib Gurudwara is a wonderful place to visit. Particularly for spiritual people. You can join the Sikhs in prayer at any time of day, or simply admire the beauty of it, and the friendliness you’re faced with.

The atmosphere here is incredibly warm and friendly. The people are always happy to help in any way. You can even enjoy some free halwa!

While Sikhism is a relatively unknown religion, it’s the fifth-largest religion in the world, with about 28 million followers! This means that this temple is often very busy, as it is a holy site of pilgrimage.

Sikhs believe in one God, but also in karma and reincarnation! It’s a fascinating religion, and one you can learn a lot about here. This stop isn’t for everyone, but anyone interested in spirituality and religion, as well as human kindness, will love it!

Of course, you can also simply admire the unique architecture, the marble facade, and the golden minarets! It’s a beautiful structure that emanates warmth and can always be relied on to bring a little peace.

Is Delhi Safe? Well, Delhi has a few safety issues to keep in mind so that you can be sure to enjoy your holiday to the fullest! Firstly, the very crowded areas are places where pickpockets thrive, like in every city. Delhi just has more crowded areas than many others.

So keep your bag closed and in front of you. Keep your wallet in your front pocket rather than the back. Don’t wear flashy jewelry or anything too expensive-looking that can easily be grabbed!

Another issue is the congestion on the roads. This is one of the reasons we recommend using the metro, as traffic is a serious problem! More than that though, you need to be very careful when crossing the street.

Unfortunately, Delhi is not an especially safe place for women traveling alone – rape and sexual assault is pretty common. If you do choose to travel alone, avoid empty streets even during the day. At night, take extra care. Make sure your transport home is safe and reputable. Also be sure to watch your drinks.

If you arrive in Delhi and your taxi driver says the hotel you ask to go to is dangerous or closed, get out or ask to be taken to the place you said. Known as touts , these men are almost always trying to take you to a hotel where they earn commission on your stay.

10 Delhi Travel Tips For Tourists to See & Enjoy Delhi in 2024!

Delhi is a chaotic city. It’s huge, it’s busy, it’s loud, it’s often very polluted. Yet most backpackers, travellers and visitors to India will start their India itinerary in Delhi.

And that makes sense because Delhi it’s centrally located to Rajasthan – a popular area of India for tourists to explore, Agra which is home to the Taj Mahal and just an overnight train or short flight away from one of the oldest cities in the world-  Varanasi .

I don’t think that starting a trip to India in Delhi is a bad thing but to really enjoy Delhi and to leave not feeling scammed, overwhelmed and with the opinion that you’ll never go back (as some tourists to Delhi do!) there are certain Delhi Travel Tips that you need to know and that’s what I’m going to share with you in this Delhi Travel Blog and Delhi Travel Guide . Here are 10 Delhi Travel Tips for Foreigners !

Delhi Travel Tips

Best time to visit Delhi

Before we get into some top Delhi travel tips , it’s worth thinking about the best time to visit Delhi or any city of India, as the country get’s very hot and wet in the middle of the year. November to March are the best times to visit both North & South India . As Delhi is in north-central India , consider the colder months of the year to visit here so you don’t have to deal with the scorching sun.

South India will be warmer than North India in the winter months of December and January, Delhi and further North actually get cold in these months but are still enjoyable to visit with the right clothing.

Outside these months, you can still visit but you’ll find that the heat and humidity will be much higher, especially as you go further South.

SIM CARD FOR INDIA

I really recommend having a sim card in India as it makes travel in India so much easier! You may have heard that it’s hard to get a sim card in India but you can get a sim card in Delhi Airport, read this post to see how to buy a sim card in Delhi Airport or if you fly in elsewhere 3 ways to buy a sim card in India and you’ll be connected in just a few hours!

WHAT TO WEAR IN INDIA

If you are a woman, here’s what I recommend you pack and wear in India . Technically you can wear what you like in India in most places but to get fewer stares and feel more comfortable, read my post!

DON’T GET SCAMMED IN DELHI

Most people arrive for the first time into Delhi and get scammed within a few hours! Read my Delhi Travel Tips to help you enjoy Delhi, and the best places to stay in Delhi which is so important!

1 – Go with an Open Mind

I’m sure you’ve been told horror stories about Delhi and I’m sure you’ve read horror stories about Delhi!

My top Delhi travel tip is to forget all of that! Firstly because you’re going to arrive in Delhi with a bad and negative mindset whereas arriving with an open mind will enable you to enjoy Delhi much more.

Secondly, Delhi and India in general, has changed so much in the last few years , if you know someone who had a bad experience in Delhi 10 years ago, chances are, if they went back now they wouldn’t even recognise the city.

The city has modernised and the generations of India have modernised too making Delhi tourism that bit easier. Read this post if you’re questioning, is Delhi Safe? ?

2 – Stay in a Good Area of Delhi

It took me 3 visits to Delhi to realise this important Delhi travel tip so I’m going to tell you now, so you don’t make the same mistake.

There’s an area in Delhi called ‘ Paharganj ‘ which is located close to New Delhi Train Station. This may seem like a popular area of Delhi to stay in because it’s well located to the train station and it has a huge concentration of accommodation on the likes of Booking.com , in fact, it’s known as the backpacker area of Delhi . However,  Paharganj isn’t a nice area .

Paharganj has a busy main bazaar with many shops aimed at tourists but it is too overwhelming. It has budget accommodation and from my experience, the hotels are budget quality and will leave you disappointed. Therefore, I really do not recommend you stay in this area of Delhi.

Old Delhi is another popular area of Delhi to visit (more on that below) but staying here is a big mistake too.

So where is the best place to stay in Delhi in a safe hotel in Delhi? Well, either Central or in South Delhi.

Central Delhi is a good area of Delhi to stay in for tourists  because it’s well located to Delhi monuments like the India Gate and the Jantar Mantar but it’s also close to Connaught Place (CP as it’s known to the locals) which is pretty much the very centre of Delhi.

Lots of metro stations meet here meaning it’s easy for everyone in Delhi to get to, Connaught Place itself has a nice park to sit in, and there are higher-end shops and restaurants here too.

I have stayed at Bloom Rooms Hotel Janpath  in Central Delhi  which I love and really recommend to you. It’s in the area of Janpath which has its own metro station, Janpath Market is close by which is a nice place to shop, it’s two stops from Khan Market (more on that below) and a short walk from Connaught Place.

Not only that but the hotel is beautifully designed, the staff are welcoming, it has a great cafe on-site and generally, it’s a nice place to recuperate in after sightseeing in Delhi whilst still staying in Central Delhi.

It’s also located next to the Shangri-La Hotel and Le Meridein Hotel in Delhi so it has the same fantastic location as these five-star hotels in Delhi but it’s a lot more affordable.

If you’d prefer staying in South Delhi, this is possible too. I also stayed at Prakash Kutir B&B in South Delhi in Hauz Khas . Staying here means it takes a bit longer to get into Central and Old Delhi however there are Delhi monuments to visit such as the Lotus Temple and Qutub Minar nearby and from staying here you get a much more residential and local look at Delhi. Prakash Kutir B&B is more like a homestay to be honest as the building is part family home, part hotel.

3 – Know that Delhi is NOT JUST Old Delhi

What do you know about the best areas in Delhi to visit and what to see in Delhi?

Old Delhi is probably what comes to mind first and that’s understandable, as a tourist this part of the city is what we are drawn to and told so much about in Delhi travel guides etc, but Delhi is so much more than just Old Delhi!

By all means, go there, there are things to do in Old Delhi such as the Red Fort, Chandni Chowk street and Jama Masjid- the biggest mosque in India but do not think that this is Delhi . Old Delhi is also an intense area to see alone as a tourist to Delhi, which leads me onto the next point of my Delhi travel tips…

4 – Make Use of Delhi Tours

There are so many tours in Delhi on offer like full city tours, street food tours, slum tours, cycling tours and free walking tours .

Going on a tour of Delhi not only helps you learn more about the area, and ensures you see the key places to visit in Delhi but having a guide to follow is priceless , especially in Old Delhi.

Old Delhi is chaotic, it’s everything you probably had in mind of India and of Delhi, it’s also very old with pavements missing, potholes, wires everywhere, dust everywhere and a whole lot of people!

I went on two tours around Old Delhi that I’d recommend to you to help you enjoy Delhi and therefore this is one of my biggest Delhi travel tips !

Old Delhi Street Food Tour

Last year when I was in Mumbai I went on a slum tour in Mumbai with Reality Tours, they are a company that has been designed with an incredible mission and values to give back to local communities. I left their Mumbai Tour thinking highly of them so I was happy to see they offer a Street Food Tour in Old Delhi .

I met my guide Sagar in Connaught Place before getting the metro together to Old Delhi, we had 5 delicious food stops , visited the Sikh Temple on Chandni Chowk, the Spice Market- Asia’s largest Spice Market and we also took multiple rickshaws throughout Old Delhi from place to place so I could soak up the pure craziness of this area!

Not only did I eat a lot of nice foods but I learnt so much about the area, about life in India and even picked up a few Hindi words. It was so amazing being able to see Delhi like this as well as certain tourist places in Delhi, but not feel overwhelmed about trying to navigate Old Delhi’s little streets and the traffic on my own.

BOOKING TRAINS IN INDIA

India is best travelled by train because its the quickest, cheapest and best way of getting to know the country. For an EASY option of booking trains in India use 12GO to search and book trains really easily. If you’ll be in India for awhile, you can use the local booking system, it’s a bit tricker but possible, here’s my post on how to book trains in India as a tourist .

BEST ACCOMMODATION IN INDIA

I always use Booking.com to book my hotels in India and Hostelworld to book my hostels . India has a great range of accommodation with brilliant hostel chains like Moustache, Zostel and Backpacker Panda as well as homestays to luxury hotels.

GUIDED TOURS IN INDIA

Many cities in India are best seen with a guide , even if it’s just a half day tour on your first day . Cities in India are chaotic and complex and what better way to taste the food and get to know the city than with a local. I recommend Get Your Guide & Viator for the best tours in India!

Old Delhi Cycling Tour

I also love this Cycling Tour of Old Delhi with Spin Monkey , we do it on my India group tours and the guests love it!

You start very early in the morning in Old Delhi while the traffic is quiet, visit some hidden local parts of the area that you would never find alone. Cycle through the maze of small lanes that you would get totally lost in alone, go to the spice market for chai on the rooftop, learn a lot and end by eating a delicious breakfast just as Old Delhi is fully awake!

Old Delhi Free Walking Tour

I also wanted to check out a free walking tour in Delhi, there are a few on offer but I ended up going with Yo Tours Free Walking Tour around Old Delhi , it was just 90 minutes but I considering it’s free with a recommended tip of 400Rs you can’t expect much more.

The guide was lovely, I learnt more about the history and again it was so nice seeing the windy streets of Old Delhi but not on my own and not worrying about where to go.

Plus, being with a guide in Old Delhi really reduces the amount of hassle you get from shop owners etc as they can see you won’t stop as you’re on a tour.

5 – Don’t Be Afraid to Sightsee Alone

With the above being said, don’t be afraid to see Delhi alone either. You can get the Metro, Uber and Rickshaws around the city perfectly fine on your own and very cheaply. Central and South Delhi are good areas to explore alone and you can get to many of Delhi’s most popular monuments by metro.

I’d say a good mix of seeing Old Delhi with a guide and other areas on your own is a good way to do your Delhi sightseeing and one of my top Delhi travel tips .

6 – Use the Metro like a Local

The traffic in Delhi can be crazy and although you can walk around parts of Delhi I don’t suggest you try to walk all day because of the noise, heat and pollution. The best way to get around Delhi is by using the metro!

This may surprise you, it may not, but the Delhi Metro is ultra-modern ! They have a number of lines connecting the city and places to visit near Delhi. The lines are colour-coded, the signs are in Hindi and English and best of all, the platforms and the carriages are air-conditioned which is bliss when it’s hot in Delhi!

As a solo female in Delhi one of my Delhi travel tips is that I felt very safe on the metro in all carriages but just so you know, the first carriage in the direction the train is going is always a female-only carriage !

7 – Keep Your Wits About you at the Airport

Talking of the airport, this is where you may well experience your first scam in Delhi . Delhi Airport is notorious for this, even these days so note these below Delhi travel tips!

Sim Card in Delhi Airport Scam

For example, Delhi Airport now has an Airtel store which you can buy a sim card  and it’s much easier buying a sim card here than in the city (so I’d 100% recommend getting a sim here), however, the staff there are known for not giving the correct change, by a lot!

I’ve had it attempted on me twice and many people have told me it happened, or nearly happened to them too! That’s the worse way to be scammed within 1 hour of landing in Delhi!

Here’s my full post on how to buy a sim card in Delhi Airport . I really recommend you have a sim card or a data device to stay connected in India. If you don’t want to get a sim card, or your phone is locked and you can’t get a local sim, then get a portable device like this instead:

Airport Taxi Scam

Getting a taxi from Delhi Airport into the city is another way people may catch you out by charging you way more than the correct fare.

The best thing to do is to  prebook a taxi from Delhi Airport to your hotel which is a reasonable price, or to go to the mini-cab office outside of the airport, they will give you a set price which is the best rate, you pay the guy then and then get the taxi.

I did this and it was the cheapest option. Just make sure you have the address and phone number of your Delhi Hotel on hand so the driver can call them if they can’t find it.

The other option is Uber but your sim card won’t be activated until 2-3 hours after buying it in the airport and the mini-cabs are not much more expensive.

Tourist Office Scam

Either way, I know it’s hard because you’re tired from the flight and the heat when you step outside will probably hit you but a top Delhi travel tip to avoid scams in Delhi is to try and keep your wits about you and keep a level head at the airport.

Don’t stand for the men trying to confuse you, tell them to leave you alone or walk off never listen to them wanting to take you to a ‘tourist office’ because it’s all a scam . There’s a Costa Coffee in Delhi Airport arrivals so you could grab a coffee, think things through and then start your journey into Delhi.

8 – Be Aware of Scams in Delhi

Let’s touch on more scams in Delhi as knowing these are the top Delhi travel tips! 

Other scams in Delhi to be careful of are around the Delhi tourist monuments , not all the men (and I say men as India is male-heavy and you will come in contact with way more men than women in India) will be trying to scam you, some will just ask if you want a guide, a rickshaw/tuk-tuk or if you want photos taken in front of monuments.

But others may try to get you into their friends or uncles shop if you’re on a tour and others will mention a  government official tourist office   which is a famous Delhi scam , or they’ll talk about government shops.  They’re all in it on commission and you will get charged way more for whatever you purchase. Plus, Indian people can be very convincing so you probably won’t even want what you are purchasing!

I really urge you to speak to the locals in Delhi, after all, part of being in India is to talk to Indian’s as many people are very friendly but don’t let any Indian person pressure you into going somewhere and don’t go until you think about it properly and with a level head so you can avoid scams in Delhi.

With that said I have always felt safe in Delhi and felt like my belongings are safe . Of course, you need to keep an eye on your bag like in every big city in the world but in all of India, I have never felt like I may be mugged or robbed and be part of a scam this way, so don’t let this worry you. Be sensible but don’t be over paranoid.

9 – Dress Appropriately

This Delhi travel tip is aimed at women and what to wear as a woman in Delhi .

Even though Delhi is a modern and cosmopolitan city in some areas you still need to be careful with what you wear in Delhi. For example, as a woman, I have always, and will always, wear long or 3/4 trousers or a skirt past my knees , I’ll never wear shorts in Delhi, even though you’ll see some local younger girls wearing them.

I have worn a tank top in Delhi with a shawl around me but in all honesty, if I compare the experience to that of wearing a t-shirt, I feel much more comfortable in a t-shirt in Delhi .

10 – Visit Local Places in Delhi, Not Just Tourist Places

Finally, that last of my Delhi travel tips, remember there is so much more to Delhi than it’s tourist monuments!

Yess the Red Fort, the Tombs, the Temples are good to see, especially if this is your first stop in India and you want to soak in the culture, but remember you’ll see plenty more during your India trip whether you’re in India for 2 weeks or 2 months , so be sure to head to some local places in Delhi too.

My main suggestion would be to go to Khan Market during the day or in the evening. During the day Khan Market is full of shops and cafes for lunch and come evening it comes alive with restaurants and bars. Sure the shops like MAC, Starbucks and Hamleys may not seem appealing but this is where locals go on a weekend evening so it’s good to see!

Hauz Khas Village  is another great place to visit, again full of restaurants and boutique shops and this is especially good to visit if you are staying in South Delhi.

If you want to get some peace and quiet in Delhi, and you probably will, head to Lodhi Garden which locals visit but it’s also home to some tombs so you can see sights and relax in one go.

Is Delhi Safe? A Solo Female Traveller’s Perspective (2024)

Let’s be honest, Delhi , India’s bustling capital, doesn’t have the reputation of being the safest city in the world. The Delhi gang rape made headlines in 2012, and the city is often described as the most dangerous one in India. So if you’re planning on visiting this city during your next trip, you might ask yourself the question “Is Delhi safe?”.

I visited Delhi a couple of times and am heading back there regularly. After all, this city is an inevitable stop when you’re travelling in the north of India .

You will find my honest opinion about safety in Delhi in this post and my personal experiences travelling here as a solo female.

Is Delhi Safe?

Delhi is famous for its huge population and crime and sexual harassment do occur here. However, this is the case in many cities, and in my experience, Delhi is as safe as any other metropolitan city. I was harassed more times in Brussels, where I’m from, than in Delhi, for example. But then again, I also spent more time in Brussels.

As long as you use your common sense, dress modestly and take some precautions (you can read more about this later), you should be fine (keeping in mind that something bad could happen anywhere).

I won’t lie though – Delhi isn’t a city for everyone . Although it is home to some spectacular historical landmarks and there are many friendly people here, Delhi is also home to plenty of creeps and people who are looking to scam you.

Solo female travel in Delhi

I visited Delhi a couple of times by myself and stayed in Paharganj – the not-so-nice neighbourhood – each time, used public transportation to get around and walked for kilometres alone in multiple areas.

Although I came across some situations that weren’t very pleasant, I never felt unsafe in Delhi.

Most unpleasant situations were linked to people trying to scam me . When I wanted to walk from the railway station to Paharganj, for example, a security guard stopped me and told me I couldn’t walk that way because the street was closed. I ended up taking an auto-rickshaw that brought me to a fake travel agency. I’m not interested in tours, so I didn’t buy anything, but it ended up being a total waste of time.

On another occasion, I found a guy banging his head against the wall right in front of the door of my hotel room in Paharganj. He ignored me when I passed by, but things like this are not uncommon if you stay in this area. So, I would recommend staying in a nicer area, like South Delhi, for a more pleasant visit (this is what I will do too from now on).

Delhi is not my favourite city, not because of the city itself but due to the scams and bad accommodation, but you will read more about this later.

Keeping the negatives aside, I think Delhi is worth visiting ! It’s home to some of India’s most famous landmarks , like Humayun’s Tomb, the Red Fort and the Lotus Temple, after all.

Overall, as long as you use your common sense and stick to some rules, I think Delhi is safe for solo female travellers.

Scams in Delhi

There aren’t many places in the world where people tried to scam me as much as they did in Delhi.

Apart from auto-rickshaw drivers trying to charge me ten times the local price (which is normal in India), they would also try to drop me off at shops or fake travel agencies where they “don’t receive a commission”.

It’s good to know that there are plenty of fake offices selling train and bus tickets , fake travel agencies , etc in this city. Oh, and you can’t trust security guards or the police, as they’re all in it or simply don’t care!

Another common scam is where your taxi or rickshaw driver either tells you that your hotel doesn’t exist or that he can bring you to a better one that’s cheaper (and where he will get a commission).

So make sure to research the most common scams in Delhi before heading there, I’ve written an entire post about them. Although I was aware of many scams, weird things still happened to me in this city.

Accommodation

And then there’s the accommodation… This is my least favourite thing about Delhi.

Reviews on Booking, Agoda and other websites are often fake when it comes to budget hotels, and so are the pictures .

One of the hotels I stayed at in Delhi took my phone to “look at the booking reference” and wrote a fake review. Luckily though, you can adapt reviews later, hah!

So far, I stayed in five different hotels in Delhi, and they were all equally horrible. From dirty, mouldy bathrooms and dirty bedsheets to bedroom doors without a lock and windows that were taped together and falling apart, the accommodation in Delhi is worse than in any other city I’ve ever visited. This includes Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh , where it was surprisingly nice.

If you can afford it, then Delhi is a place where you will want to spend more money on accommodation if you want to stay in a clean place. I paid between 800 and 1400 INR during my stay in Delhi.

Tip : Read the worst reviews before booking a hotel in Delhi (or anywhere else in India), these are usually the real ones when you’re staying at budget accommodation.

Taxis and rickshaws in Delhi

When it comes to taking taxis or rickshaws in Delhi, I never experienced any serious problems, although most of them did try to scam or cheat me.

I would recommend using the Ola app when you’re travelling in India. It works just like Uber and will allow you to book an auto-rickshaw, bike or taxi for a fair price. This way, you won’t need to haggle and it will be less likely that the driver will try to scam you.

If you need to take a rickshaw at night , it’s also safer to book one with the Ola app.

Tips to Stay Safe in Delhi

It’s important to use your common sense , especially if you’re travelling in India solo (or anywhere else for that matter).

You will find some of my best tips on how to stay safe in Delhi below.

Don’t trust strangers

As I mentioned in the “Scams in Delhi” section, people will try to convince you that your hotel does not exist, that you can’t book bus tickets yourself and a million other things. Don’t trust just anyone and research things online if you want to be sure.

Don’t tell anyone where you’re staying either. You don’t want them showing up at your hotel or stalking you (this happened to me in Yangon, Myanmar).

Another thing I was told multiple times is not to accept food from strangers. I can’t find anything about it online (and I don’t know if it’s true), but according to a story, some men offered a tourist a drug-injected banana on the train and robbed him once he was out.

This being said, there are plenty of nice people in Delhi too, and chances are they will want to take many, many selfies with you.

Be aware of your surroundings

Stay alert, be aware of the people around you and keep an eye on your belongings at any time. There is petty crime in Delhi, and you don’t want to be the victim of pickpockets, for example.

It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on the water bottles that you buy. There have been reports of people selling water bottles filled with tap water in cities like Delhi and Bombay .

If you feel uncomfortable or if something doesn’t feel right, trust your gut and leave. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Act confident

People will be less likely to scam or bother you if you act confident. Walk as if you know exactly where you’re going, even if you haven’t got a clue, for example.

If someone is bothering you, firmly say “no” or tell them that you’re not interested and ask them to leave. I usually do this two times, then ignore them. People can be very, very pushy in India, and being polite does not do the trick here.

The pictures above were not taken in Delhi (obviously) but at the Taj Mahal and Patrika Gate in Jaipur . The outfit that I’m wearing, however, is something I would typically wear in Delhi too.

Dress appropriately

Although Delhi is one of the few places in India where you will see some women wearing shorts and spaghetti tops, I personally cover my shoulders and legs (especially in Old Delhi).

When you’re travelling in India, you will already stand out. I can’t recall the number of times that I was surrounded by dozens of men asking for a selfie. If you’re wearing revealing clothes, you will only attract even more (unwanted) attention.

On top of that, you will have to pack a more conservative wardrobe if you’re planning on visiting the rest of India, and you will also have to cover up if you want to visit temples and other religious sites.

So, if you’re asking me, in Delhi, maxi skirts, maxi dresses, loose pants, t-shirts and scarves are your best friend.

Buy a local SIM card

Having a local sim and being able to access the internet is so handy when you’re travelling.

A local sim won’t only allow you to research things online and stay in touch with friends and family, but it will also allow you to call for help if necessary.

You can buy local sims at the Indira Gandhi International Airport or the provider’s shops. Airtel, Jio and Vi (Vodafone) are the most popular ones. However (if what they told me is true), Jio doesn’t sell SIM cards to foreigners anymore.

Don’t walk around dodgy areas at night

I think this one speaks for itself. Walking around dodgy areas at night is not a good idea in any city, let alone in a metropolis like Delhi.

This doesn’t mean you can’t go outside in the evening, though. Just be extra careful and stick to well-lit places with people around.

If you need to take a rickshaw later in the evening, I would order one via Ola.

Prepare yourself for culture shock

If it’s your first time in India, you might experience culture shock. The best way to handle this is to have an open mind and accept that things will be different as they are back home.

I love India, but I’m the first to admit that this is not a country for everyone. India can be overwhelming at times, it is dirty , overpopulation is a problem and travelling here can be uncomfortable .

On top of that, it’s not uncommon to be surrounded by dozens of men asking for a selfie. Most people are sweet and respectful, though, but not everyone.

This being said, India is also famous for being steeped in culture and tradition, and it’s incredibly varied too. Not many countries have beaches, mountains and deserts, after all!

Is Delhi safe? Final Thoughts

All in all, I think Delhi is as safe as any big capital. However, overall, more people will try to scam you here.

Therefore, it’s important to come prepared. Research the most common scams in Delhi, use your common sense, dress modestly and trust your gut. It might be useful to learn some basic Hindi too.

Don’t let any of this stop you from visiting India’s bustling capital, though. Delhi has a lot to offer, from spectacular landmarks to delicious food (do make sure to read my tips on how to avoid Delhi belly )!

Top things to do in Delhi

Delhi is huge – the second largest urban area in the world, after Tokyo – and having been continuously inhabited since around 600BC, its heritage is comparable only to Rome , Istanbul or Cairo . It is both one of the most forested capitals and one of the most polluted. Home to clubbing socialites and Sufi masters, medieval ruins and glittering shops, it is a thousand contradictions at once, held together by ramshackle concrete and tarmac.

Many travellers stay here for less than a day on their way to Rajasthan or the Himalayas , but it’s worth spending some time to explore what the city has to offer.

THE WORLD'S LARGEST BIRD HOSPITAL AT SRI DIGAMBAR JAIN TEMPLE

One of the oldest, and definitely the most beautiful, of its kind in Delhi, this Jain temple has hundred-year-old frescoes and an entire hospital dedicated to healing 15,000 wounded birds a year. The place is steeped in legend, and it is said that when the Mughal emperor banned music in the temple, the walls continued to emanate drumming of their own accord.

DRISHYAKALA ART MUSEUM

Although this former British barracks was restored and converted into an art gallery only a year ago, it has quickly grown into one of the capital’s most popular museums. Situated in the heart of Delhi – the famous Red Fort – the Drishyakala overlooks some of the greatest Mughal architecture in the city. Highlights include rare sculptures by Amrita Sher-Gil, a series of Jamini Roy works and the early colonial landscape paintings of William Daniell.

LODHI COLONY STREET ART

The broad avenues of Lodhi Colony have been transformed into India’s first open-air art museum following the recent Street Art Festival. Pop-surrealist murals by more than 30 artists examine topical issues from climate change and women’s empowerment to rural folk tales.

WILDLIFE WATCHING IN THE HIDDEN JUNGLES OF SOUTH DELHI

It’s easy to see Delhi as a giant concrete jungle, but scattered through the city are dozens of sprawling jungles. Don’t forget to take mosquito repellent and keep your eyes peeled for monkeys, vultures, painted storks and jackals. In the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary to the south you might even spot a leopard.

CYCLE THROUGH ASIA'S LARGEST SPICE MARKET

Prepare for sensory overload and take a cycle rickshaw through Khari Baoli, Asia’s largest spice market. The pace here is frenetic as street vendors vie to sell towers of turmeric, ginger, tamarind and chilli, all trying to be heard over the cacophony of motorbike horns and torrent of explosive sneezes. The best way to experience it is via cycle-rickshaw. If you ask, you might even be able to steer it yourself.

VINTAGE BOLLYWOOD IN HAUZ KHAUS VILLAGE

This trendy neighbourhood in South Delhi is known for its eclectic fashion boutiques, galleries and clubs. Cottage of Arts and Jewels is the undisputed gem of the Bollywood poster shops, a small underground vintage store selling thousands of old Bollywood posters and vinyl records.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY IN MEHRAULI

Until a few years ago, Hauz Khas Village was the undisputed centre of Delhi’s nightlife, but recently a swathe of hip restaurants, bars and nightclubs have opened up in the southern district of Mehrauli. On weekends, socialites dine on Armenian food at Lavaash or wood-fired pizzas at Olives, before heading to Dear Donna to dance until dawn. Turn up on a Saturday night to experience Delhi nightlife at its most buzzing.

MEHRAULI'S HAUNTED SHRINE

Avoid the crowds of the Qutb Minar and take a stroll through the Mehrauli Archaeological Park opposite. At its centre is Jamali-Kamali, the tomb of two male Sufi lovers. Considered one of the primary residencies of the city’s djinns and spirits, this complex now has a rather absurd dual identity as both haunted spot and icon for the city’s LGBTQ community.

GO HAVELI HUNTING IN OLD DELHI

This may just be my favourite pastime in Delhi. These opulent mansions once dominated the streets of the Old Town, their carved façades the subject of poetry and music. Today most lie in varying states of decay, their lavish carvings and bejewelled interiors largely forgotten. Sip on a lassi in the beautifully restored Haveli Dharampura before exploring the alleyways in search of more forgotten palaces.

WATCH A PIGEON COMPETITION FROM THE ROOFTOPS

In the alleyways of Shahjahanabad, pigeon flying, or kabootar bazi, is an art. A player will steer a flock of up to 50 birds with a complex series of whistles. The aim is to confuse the opponent’s pigeons into abandoning their own flock and joining the other side. Residents train their pigeons throughout the year, but competitions only happen in winter, and this is your best chance to catch the games. The best spot to watch them is from Haveli Dharampura.

TRY DELHI'S TASTIEST NIHARI

Nearby Karim’s is the most famous restaurant in Old Delhi, having been founded by royal chefs of the Mughal court. But venture deeper into the backstreets, and order a nihari at Hotel Hilal (which is notably not a hotel ). This succulent mutton dish is stewed overnight with green chillis, lime and ginger and is traditionally eaten at sunrise, although these days it is available throughout the day.

GROOVE TO JAZZ AT THE PIANO MAN

One of the best additions to Delhi’s music scene in recent years has been the Piano Man. Regularly hosting some of Delhi’s top live acts, this jazz bar has grown into one of the most influential entertainment venues in the capital.

SIP WHISKEY AT THE IMPERIAL HOTEL

The Imperial Hotel was built during the final years of the Raj, and the hotel remains a time capsule. Order a whiskey at the bar , and gaze at its incredible collection of colonial and post-colonial art – the largest in the city.

THE BOTANICAL GARDENS OF THE SUNDER NURSERY

Just around the corner from the famous Humayun’s Tomb are the sprawling botanical gardens of the Sunder Nursery. Over the past decade, an urban renewal project has turned this abandoned necropolis into a modernist Persian garden – the city’s largest arboretum containing rare species of plants, hundreds of rare birds and 15 Mughal tombs.

LISTEN TO DEVOTIONAL MUSIC AT THE NIZAMUDDIN DARGAH SHRINE

Every Thursday evening, hundreds of pilgrims from every religion gather around Delhi’s most sacred shrine for qawwali, some of the most powerful devotional music anywhere in the world. Although the shrine is dedicated to the Muslim saint Nizamudin Auliya, the nearby tomb of Amir Khusrow – the man who invented the qawwali genre – attracts almost as much attention. Expect dancing, rose petals and maybe an exorcism or two.

WANDER THROUGH THE RUINS OF INDIA'S COLONIAL PAST AT CORONATION PARK

After the British left India in 1947, Delhi came up with a unique way of dealing with its colonial statues. In the north of the city lies the small and overgrown Coronation Park. Here the city’s marble statues of King George and Queen Victoria sit outside – open to the elements – slowly fading away under a towering Indian flag. It’s a powerful statement about the country’s past.

New Delhi is a colorful and vibrant world of its own in the North of India. The mesmerizing capital boasts millions of faces, scents, sounds and things to see. It is one of the oldest cities in the world with stunning monuments that tell tales of long-gone empires.

At the same time, it displays some of the most enticing features of a modern city, like the irresistible cuisine and sprawling parks. The metropolis is a must-visit, one of the undisputed Indian highlights. It will help you understand what made India the country it is today.

New Delhi has a reputation for overwhelming first-time visitors, and yet millions of people fall in love with the city every year. Many even choose to travel India solo , something I plan to do one day myself.

If you haven’t been to India before, be prepared for Delhi’s vastness, the horrendous traffic, intense heat during the summer/monsoon season (April-August) and the large number of people that seem to want something from you. And despite the Prime Minister’s mission to clean up India, most Delhi neighborhoods are still extremely dirty.

But the worst part for me was witnessing so many people living in extreme poverty. I tried to prepare myself prior to the trip but it was so much worse than I could’ve ever imagined. Young girls sleeping on the streets with newborn babies, handicapped people living in cardboard boxes and emaciated elderly people everywhere. Heartbreaking!

Most of the city’s poor, about 33% of the population, are migrants. They came to Delhi attracted by the promise of secure jobs and a better life, but more often than not their dreams never came true.

I wish I had done some more research on organizations helping the less fortunate before we got to India because then I would have known about the walking tours such as this educational and ethical walking tour through the Sanjay Colony slum area.

You also have to prepare for the staring, which is what drove me to the breaking point several times. (Yes I’m very easily agitated, especially when it’s 45°C out.) Some Indian men will openly stare and stare and stare and stare. And then sometimes make unwanted advances, often including groping and photographing you without permission.

I tried my best to ignore it, but coming from Norway where people look down most of the time in fear of making eye contact, and you are considered to be a crazy person if you sit down next to someone on an empty bus, I just couldn’t help myself.

I raised my voice and asked “What are you staring at?!?!?” quite a few times and even then they just kept on staring.

So in light of all of this, you might wonder why you should even bother to visit Delhi. But I promise, despite all the mayhem, there are peaceful havens and incredible historic sites waiting to be discovered. You just need to know where to look and what to stay away from.

How to get around New Delhi

The traffic in India is pretty bad in general, but no other city can prepare you for the sheer traffic anarchy you are about to experience in the country’s capital. I would not recommend trying to navigate the chaos by yourself. It is easy and convenient to grab a taxi, rickshaw, metro or train.

When arriving in the middle of the night I always like to arrange for the hotel I’m staying at to pick me up at the airport so I don’t waste any time driving around looking for my accommodation. This is especially handy in India where scams are a part of everyday life.

However, after we had booked our hotel in Delhi we discovered that they didn’t offer this service, after all, so we opted for the next best thing, a private driver.

🌟 I highly recommend that you book a private, hassle-free door-to-door airport transfer ! You will be greeted by your driver in the arrival hall of Indira Gandhi International Airport and he will assist you with your luggage.

I do not recommend using the regular pre-paid taxis at the airport as I’ve heard quite a few disheartening stories. The most common scam revolves around the driver taking unknowing travelers to a remote location in the middle of the night, claiming not to be able to find your hotel or that the hotel has closed down and instead of taking you to one that pays a commission. More on common scams to look out for at the end of the post.

If you’re a female solo traveler or traveling with a group of girls,  Sakha Cabs  could also be a great option for both airport transfers and day trips, etc. In partnership with Azad Foundation, a nonprofit organization, Sakha provides jobs in professional driving to resource-poor women in India as part of “Women on Wheels (WOW)” initiative. What a great cause to support!

It’s also quite easy to grab an Uber or Ola from the airport as there are designated areas for your driver to pick you up. You can read more about which transportation apps you should download prior to your trip and other great advice for travel in India here .

The rickshaw is probably the cheapest and most authentic way to get around the city. You sit in a converted, open-air tricycle behind the driver. There are both bicycles and motorbike/auto rickshaws. Remember to agree on a price before you get in.

New Delhi’s metro system is air-conditioned (which, during the intense summer heat is a lifesaver), cheap, and reliable. Within just 20-30 minutes, you can get from the airport to the city center. 

Don’t be afraid to use it during the day, even if you’re a woman traveling alone. There’s a ladies’ car at one end of every train, clearly marked with pink signage so you can’t go wrong.

I didn’t try it myself because our time in New Delhi was so limited, but  here’s a guide that will help you master the metro system in no time. And here’s an overview of all the metros in India with maps .

Joining a guided tour on your first day in New Delhi is a good idea to get the lay of the land and some tips from the local guides. As mentioned, while it is absolutely possible, the city can be very overwhelming to explore on your own.

This was my favorite tour we did in Delhi , we covered so much in a day and saw places we would never have discovered on our own. You can choose between a half-day tour of New Delhi or Old Delhi, or do both on a full-day tour. I can’t recommend this one enough!

For women, it is important to cover up shoulders and legs as a sign of respect, especially if you plan on visiting a mosque or temple. One of the things not to do in India is wear very short skirts or tight-fitting clothes while you’re out and about in the city as it will result in stares and maybe even groping as mentioned above.

Wearing loose, cotton clothing is a better idea because it will keep you cool and at the same time help you fit in more. I swore by basic cotton maxi dresses and colorful kimonos during our two weeks in India. Super comfortable and at the same time a little bit stylish for the photos.

I also noticed that I got a lot more unwanted attention when I wore my long hair down instead of up in a bun.

You should also be aware that pickpocketing is extremely common in Delhi. So don’t flash your valuables around and make sure you carry them safely in an anti-theft backpack or a bag you can lock.

Where to stay in New Delhi

Paharganj, also known as the Main Bazaar, is one of the most popular budget/backpacker areas in Delhi. Here you’ll find chaotic markets, hostels and many restaurants serving both Indian or Western food.

Smyle Inn is a great accommodation option if you’re on a tight budget. It’s small but modern and the New Delhi Railroad Station is only a five-minute walk away. Other affordable areas close by are Karol Bagh to the West of Paharganj and crazy busy Chandni Chowk to the North.

Connaught Place with its spacious, tree-lined streets and roundabouts is the modern business district of Delhi. Connected by numerous Metro stations, taxis, and auto-rickshaws, this is the place to stay if you want to zip around the city very easily.

Apart from high-rises and office buildings, you will also find fancy hotels like the Oberoi New Delhi and the five-star The Park New Delhi .

South Delhi is vast and very different from the crowded market streets of Old Delhi. The somewhat peaceful atmosphere and the fact that so many of the tourist attractions are located here are why this is my favorite area in New Delhi.

If you stay here, you can easily access highlights like the Lodhi Gardens and the tombs of Mughal Emperors (e.g. in the Nizamuddin district). The different districts look more like oversized neighborhoods with huge streets and lots of trees.

You will also find plenty of food stalls and shops. There are some luxury hotels, as well as comfortable guest houses, such as G49 Bed & Breakfast .

Delhi has much more to offer than meets the eye, which is also true for the food. In this foodie haven, you will never go hungry. Join this street food tour of old Delhi where you get to taste local on-the-go snacks. Travel from location to location by rickshaw and experience the city like a local!

Just at the entrance of the National Crafts Museum, you’ll find  Cafe Lota  – a beautiful, Instagrammable cafe that feels like a calm oasis compared to the chaos of the streets outside. We had lunch here and it was one of the best meals of our India trip, so I can definitely recommend this place.

AnnaMaya , a food-hall-style restaurant filled with stations for every cuisine you could possibly imagine, is another one of my favorites in the city.

• Old Delhi: One of the most iconic areas of Delhi, the old part of town boasts buzzing markets and some of the best food stalls in the city. You have to come here if you’re a street food lover like me!
• North Campus : This area is one of the best places to find cheap and delicious meals. After all, students always know where to get the best value for their money. Some great spots: Bamboo Hut, Shagun Asian Eatery, Momo’s Point, Bille Di Hatti and South Indian Cafe.
• Hudson Lane : Not far from the North Campus area, you will find great cafés and restaurants, which also offer international cuisine. Some of the best places are Big Yellow Door, Mad Monkey, QD’s, Woodbox Café, Indus Flavours and Rico’s.
• South Campus/ Satya Niketan : This is a great area to find quirky cafés and chains like Chowringhee Lane, Echoes, Kev’s, and Vadapav Junction.
• Jama Masjid & Bazaar Matia Mahal : This is not only a favorite for hungry locals but also a great foodie and traveler destination.
• Nizamuddin : This iconic area is a must-visit for any foodie, with one great eatery next to the other. Some great options are: Ghalib Kebab Corner, Karim’s and Gulfam Kashmiri Wazwan.
• Fine dining : Pandara Road and Safdarjung Enclave offer some excellent fine dining options.

Promise me that you won’t leave the city without trying Chole Bhature, Paranthas, Chaat and of course my favorite, Paneer Butter Masala.

Traveling in India is not always easy. Despite the kindness of the people and the country’s incredible beauty, you will probably experience some lows. You should always stay alert and be aware of your surroundings as scams are kind of a daily routine. Here are a few examples of popular scams for you to avoid:

• Fake train ticket: Only buy your tickets from an official ticketing office. Do not trust strangers who offer to take you to their alleged friend’s ticket outlet.
• Apparently closed or canceled:  Do not believe somebody telling you that your train has been canceled. They will try to sell you alternative transport options like a car or bus. A similar scam is also popular at tourist attractions. The driver will claim that one site is ‘closed,’ in order to offer to take you to another place, often a store or somewhere that gives the driver a commission like the hotel scam I mentioned earlier.  Stick to your plan.
• Altered taxi meters: Find a legal taxi, be direct about where you want to go and keep an eye on the meter. If it is running unusually fast, it may have been altered to claim a higher fare.
• Pre-paid taxis:  Many people have experienced pre-paid taxi drivers who suddenly ‘forgot’ the way and suggested another hotel. Stick to your plan and do not hand the pre-paid voucher to the driver until you have arrived.
• Keep an eye on your money:  People will often try and short-change you. If you notice this, confront the person authoritatively to solve the issue. Also, watch out for fake currency.

Yes, New Delhi is definitely worth visiting for its rich history, vibrant culture, and delicious food. It is the capital city of India and has plenty to offer for tourists. If you’re a history buff like me you’re going to love it!

You can cover most of the major attractions in New Delhi in two days, but you may not have enough time to fully experience the city.

I would say that the ideal time in Delhi for tourists is 3 or 4 days. After that, you’re probably tired of all the craziness and ready to move on.

The best time to visit New Delhi is from October to March when the weather is pleasant and comfortable. The temperature during these months ranges from 10°C to 25°C, making it the perfect time to explore the city. I visited New Delhi in August, it was HOT and humid, but totally doable.

New Delhi can be expensive, but it depends on your budget and the type of activities you plan to do. Accommodation, food, and transportation are generally affordable, but entrance fees to some of the major attractions can be expensive.

No, it is not recommended to drink tap water in Delhi. It is advisable to drink bottled water or use a water purifier to avoid any health issues.

Delhi is not a very walkable city due to its vast size and heavy traffic. However, some areas like Connaught Place and Old Delhi are pedestrian-friendly and great for exploring on foot.

The best way to get around New Delhi during a 2-day trip is by using the metro, rickshaws, or taxis. The metro is the most convenient and affordable way to travel around the city.

If you are limited on time I recommend booking a private tour of the city to get the most out of your time.

Lovely introduction to Delhi! The street food is great! There are numerous historical and architectural monuments around the city. We usually take the metro from the airport…it is cheaper and quicker!

Best (and Worst) Times to Visit Delhi & Places to Go in Each Month

The best times to visit Delhi are from October to March when the weather is cool and dry. It is also the peak season for India travel. Crowds and higher prices are usual.

April to June is the hot season in Delhi. Monsoon rains occur from late June to September. It is still possible to tour Delhi in these months, but get ready for the heat or (heavy) showers. Lower prices and less-crowded attractions are rewards.

• Festivals are the highlights of Indian life. If you want to experience Delhi's festival atmosphere, you should consider traveling during Holi (usually in March) or Diwali (in late October or November), which are the two grandest festivals in Delhi and also in India.
• April to June (the hot season) is the best time for low prices in general, when you should find the biggest discounts and more promotions on accommodation, flights, and tours.

July and August see the heaviest rainfall. If you don't like the rain, you should avoid this period. If you cannot stand the scorching heat, you'd better avoid May and June.

However, some travelers choose to visit during these times, because there are fewer tourists and great discounts.

Delhi in January — Coolest

• Average low–high temperature: 8–20°C (47–68°F)
• Key festivals: New Year's Day, Lohri (a harvest festival)

Although Delhi is located in the tropics, Delhi's winter can be chilly (due to its continental location). Bring winter clothes especially in the evenings.

Although January can be a little cool, it is a good time to travel to Delhi compared with its scorching hot summer.

On New Year's Day, you can celebrate together with local people. They dress colorfully, sing, play games, dance, and attend parties.

January is good for outdoor sightseeing like visiting Delhi's Chandni Chowk Market and Qutub Minar complex. Temple visiting is also a good choice, like Gurudwara Bangla Sahib for Sikh culture and Laxminarayan Temple for Hindu culture.

Delhi in February — Sunny and Cool

• Average low–high temperature: 11–24°C (53–74°F)

It can still be a little chilly in February. But the sunny and clear weather is suitable for all kinds of activities like visiting historical sites, going to the parks, and taking part in special activities like an Indian cooking class .

With no holidays to boost numbers in this high season month, there is less crowding, so February is a good high-season time if you want to enjoy the weather and relatively quieter attractions.

Delhi in March — Nice Warm Weather

• Average low–high temperature: 17–29°C (62–85°F)
• Key Festivals: Holi (March 27, 2024), Ramadan (April 2 – May 1, 2024)

It is comfortable to travel in Delhi in March. The weather is great, and you can experience one of the grandest festivals in India — Holi . People seemingly have color flights in every street.

Traveling during Ramadan may cause some inconveniences, such as many restaurants and shops being closed. But you could have a different cultural experience.

Popular attractions such as the Red Fort, Qutub Minar, and Jama Masjid are also great to visit in March.

Delhi in April — Hot and Dry

• Average low–high temperature: 22–36°C (72–96°F)
• Key festival: Eid al-Fitr (May 2, 2024)

The temperature in April starts to rise rapidly. Visiting indoor buildings and water parks are a good way to avoid the heat, like Jama Masjid Mosque and Adventure Island.

Eid al-Fitr is one of the big festivals in India for Muslim. It falls on the day after the end of Ramadan.

Delhi in May — Hottest Month

• Average low–high temperature: 26–39°C (80–102°F)

May is the hottest month in Delhi. The scorching heat deters many tourists. You can enjoy quieter temples in May.

Remember to prepare sun protection for daytime sightseeing. Evening sightseeing could be a good option. The sunset view at the Red Fort and the night view of Indian Gate are beautiful in May.

Places with air-conditioners like museums and shopping malls are also good places to visit.

Delhi in June — Still Hot

• Average low–high temperature: 28–38°C (83–101°F)

The temperature in June is still hot. Try to arrange outdoor visits as early as possible.

The monsoon rain begins to fall in June, but usually not very much.

June afternoons are more suitable for indoor tours, like at India National Museum and Sulabh International Museum of Toilets.

A sunset visit could be also fantastic. Some temples hold religious rituals at dusk, like Laxmi Narayan Mandir.

Delhi in July — Rains Increase

• Average low–high temperature: 28–35°C (82–95°F)

Most sightseeing in Delhi involves visiting temples, tombs, or forts, which are less affected by rain. Taking a cooking class, visiting some interesting museums like Sulabh International Museum of Toilets, and going to the landmarks of Delhi like the Red Fort are still good options on rainy days.

Delhi in August — Rainiest

• Average low–high temperature: 27–33°C (81–92°F)

August is the rainiest month in Delhi. Delhi's rainy season is characterized by short thunderstorms several times a day.

You will meet less crowding if you travel in the monsoon months as India's summer vacation ends earlier than many other northern hemisphere countries' (usually mid-April to mid-June). You will also find many promotions from hotels and airlines.

Like in July, it is still good to visit the popular (indoor) attractions like Humayun's Tomb and Jama Masjid. Delhi in September — Rainy Season Ends

• Average low–high temperature: 25–33°C (77–92°F)

The rain eases up in September. Late September could be an ideal time to travel, when the rainy season is (mostly) over, the temperature starts to cool, and it's not yet crowded.

All three of Delhi's World Heritage sites are great places to visit, the Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb, and Qutub Minar.

Delhi in October — Dry and Warm

• Average low–high temperature: 20–32°C (67–89°F)

The cool and dry weather in Delhi in October is suitable for visiting all kinds of attractions.

If you are interested in Indian religions culture, you can visit Qutub Minar, Jama Masjid, and Lotus Temple. If you like Indian history, the Red Fort and Humayun's Tomb are good to visit. If you want to learn about Delhi's local life, Chandni Chowk Market or a home visit is a good idea.

Delhi in November — Nice Weather

• Average low–high temperature: 13–27°C (56–81°F)
• Key festival: Diwali (in late October or early November)

November is the peak season, not only because of the cool weather, but also due to India's most important festival — Diwali (Festival of Light). It is the best time to experience an Indian festival and learn about Indian culture. As many fireworks are set off during Diwali, hazy weather may occur in the days following Diwali.

Besides the festival events, any sightseeing is very pleasant in the mild/warm and dry weather: historical sites, local markets, food hunting, gardens, amusement parks, and more.

Delhi in December — Cool

• Average low–high temperature: 9–22°C (48–71°F)
• Key festivals: Christmas Day, New Year's Eve

Delhi has a big day/night temperature difference in winter. It can get a little cold at night. Bring some warm clothes when traveling in December. December is also one of the peak months in Delhi. Some Westerners go to India for their Christmas holidays.

Christmas is celebrated locally and traditionally in Delhi as there are some Christian churches there. December is also a good time for shopping. There are big discounts in many shopping malls around Christmas.

In a city like Delhi where new restaurants open day after day, it's hard to tell the good from the great.

These 10 restaurants made the cut at the Condé Nast Traveller and Himalayan Sparkling Top Restaurant Awards 2018:

Indian Accent, The Lodhi, Pragati Vihar (#2 on Top Restaurant Awards 2018 list)

Indian Accent is one of New Delhi's, in fact India's most prized restaurants. Chef Manish Mehrotra expertly crafts Indian dishes so that they retain their original charm but also have a touch of modernity. Known for its butter chicken kulchas, melt-in-your-mouth naans, delicious dals and exquisitely plated, inventive desserts, Indian Accent is the place to be for a dinner to remember.

Wasabi By Morimoto, The Taj Mahal Hotel, India Gate (#7 on Top Restaurant Awards 2018 list)

Morimoto's second Indian outpost is now more than 10 years old, but under the watchful eye of Arun Sundararaj, the executive chef at the Taj Mahal Hotel Delhi, its food continues to be inventive, seasonal and full of the subtle, layered flavours that one expects of the cuisine. Japanese food demands a light touch and at Wasabi by Morimoto, the sushi, sashimi and maki rolls showcase just such a touch in the finest ingredients.

Artusi Ristorante, GK2 (#8 on Top Restaurant Awards 2018 list)

For those craving the bitter, creamy hit of tiramisu, the smokiness of salmon or the smoothness of chicken liver pate – a trip to Greater Kailash is in order. The food at Artusi encompasses northern Italian favourites (after all the owners and chef are from the Emilia Romagna region) in all its authentic glory. We're partial to the spaghetti cacio e pepe and grilled lamb chops, but with a kitchen as uncompromising as this, you can be sure that everything on the menu is bound to impress.

Bukhara, ITC Maurya, Chanakyapuri (#11 on Top Restaurant Awards 2018 list)

Lentils be known—this iconic restaurant can stride into the top 50 purely on the basis of its slow-cooked Dal Bukhara. But it has so much more going for it. The sikandari raan, for example, with meat so juicy it falls off the bone; or the tandoori prawns, or the assortment of breads hot off the tandoor. The Bukhara presents fare from the rugged North-West Frontier, and you're encouraged to dine like a desi—with your hands. Chef JP's kebabs bring some of the world's top heads of state to the restaurant, so you may want to dress your best.

Megu, The Leela New Delhi, Chanakyapuri (#12 on Top Restaurant Awards 2018 list)

Opened in 2012, this restaurant has, over the years, earned its reputation as one of most authentic Japanese dining experiences anywhere in India. The restaurant's menu is a union of the finest ingredients from as far as Japan, the US, Canada and all over Europe. The menu is populated by time-honoured hits such as the oriental salad, hamachi carpacio, salmon tartare, crispy asparagus and kanzuri shrimp. The tidy selection of sake perfectly complements the dining experience.

Chinese street food meets fine dining at this establishment. And what a meeting it is. Think classics such as Peking duck, dim sum, mapo tofu, wok fry chilli prawn and clay pot chicken given a modern update. And that is exactly what Chef Zhang Hongsheng and his team of six chefs from China bring to this restaurant. The food is simple but authentic—the sauces are brought in from various provinces all around China. But the produce is grown at an organic farm owned by the Hyatt Regency Delhi.

Annamaya, Andaz Delhi, Aerocity (#20 on Top Restaurant Awards 2018 list)

This upscale foodhall offers loads of Instagram opportunities, but it's the flavours on your plate that really wow. With its focus on mindful eating, the restaurant champions produce that is sourced from India with a socially conscious bent where possible. As a result, under chef Balpreet Singh Chadha, you'll find dishes that include basil naan accompanied by burrata and Himalayan honey, lotus root curry and confit duck leg cooked in a tandoor with ginger and tomato. Annamaya's philosophy extends to the goods on sale, so guests can take artisanal products home with them at the end of a meal.

Olive Qutub, Mehrauli (#24 on Top Restaurant Awards 2018 list)

Since opening 15 years ago, the food at Olive has delighted those looking for clean flavours that emphasise fresh ingredients. It's evolved, with new initiatives like ‘ingredient of the month' that has been spearheaded by head chef Dhruv Oberoi. It allows him to build a couple of dishes around unusual produce, like jamun and amaranth earlier this year. Alongside these innovative specials, you'll find familiar dishes like a slow-braised ossobuco or New Zealand lamb chops. In the kitchen, the eatery is working to go zero waste, with measure such as using egg shells as fertilisers, redoubling its commitment to the environment.

Delhi Club House, RK Puram (#32 on Top Restaurant Awards 2018 list)

Nostalgia is an integral part of the Delhi Club House experience. The idea behind this cheery South Delhi spot was to elevate the food one has eaten at colonial-era members-only clubs and defence messes across the country. So the menu offers such wonders as cheese balls, fish fingers, chicken stroganoff, railway mutton curry, chilli paneer and, of course, a kabab platter, all presented in a delicious, modern, chilled-out avatar. And if this isn't enough of a nostalgia kick, there's the retro playlist, starring 80s and 90s pop hits.

Diva – The Italian Restaurant, GK2 (#50 on Top Restaurant Awards 2018 list)

At a time when authentic stand-alone Italian restaurants weren't really the norm in the capital, Ritu Dalmia, one of India's most celebrated chefs, decided to take a chance. You can expect the sharpest cheeses, richest wines and softest breads on your table, accompanying food made with a whole lot of TLC. The ravioli with slow-cooked pork ribs and roasted celeriac jus is just what every meat lover needs on their plate.

How to Choose the Best Accommodation in Delhi, India – for Travellers

As the first stop on arrival in India for many international travellers, deciding on where to stay in Delhi, India can be an overwhelming task, especially if you’re visiting New Delhi for the first time. 

As a sprawling city of over 20 million people, Delhi extends on and on into suburban cities – making where you choose to stay in Delhi really important – especially if you don’t want to spend most of your visit stuck in a big traffic jam! The answer to where is the best place to stay in Delhi is fortunately not that difficult to answer, once you know where to look.. So read on! 

One of the problems of working out where to stay in New Delhi, is that not all areas of the city are safe or good options for tourists. Unfortunately, some of the best known tourist ghettos are just that, and are distinctly seedy – so in this blog I’m going to guide you through finding the best hotels in Delhi – but also where NOT to stay in Delhi. 

After 8 years of visiting Delhi, many as a solo female traveller, I’ve learned a thing or two about where the best accommodation in Delhi is and where the best place to stay in Delhi for tourists is. 

So for all you need to know about how to find safe hotels in Delhi, which New Delhi neighbourhoods are the best, and how to find the best Delhi hotels and guest houses, read on! 

Delhi – Where to Stay – Quick Comparison Chart

Where to stay in delhi for tourists – area guide.

When looking for a safe place to stay in Delhi , choosing the right area to stay in is super important. Different areas of Delhi have their own unique vibes – some are relaxed, easy-going and relatively green with lots of eating and shopping options, while others are not safe to stay in. 

• Paharganj / Area next to New Delhi Railway station – Unfortunately perhaps the best known backpacker enclave in Delhi is also one of the really not great areas to stay in Delhi. From touts who surround you from the minute you exit New Delhi railway station or approach this area and try to direct / misdirect you to hotels that will give them commission, to dirty small box rooms with no windows, the worst thing about this area is it is also New Delhi’s red light district, littered with brothels, and as such it is not safe to walk around at night alone in for women. Despite the temptingly cheap budget hotels in Delhi here, I really do not recommend staying in Paharganj unless you have a super early/late train you are catching from New Delhi railway station and you don’t mind somewhere very basic to rest your head for a few hours. 
• Connaught Place (CP)  – Located right in the heart of New Delhi, CP is one of the first options you’ll probably come across when searching for where to stay in Delhi, India. If you want to be in the thick of everything, this is a good option – with lots of shops and restaurants around, and access to Rajiv Chowk metro station on your doorstep for quick access around the city. However, the downsides are some not great hotels (check reviews before booking – with the better options being a couple of blocks away from CP itself), a lot of loud traffic, and there are also touts who approach tourists here so beware offers of help, and of course the dreaded “shopping tours” by tuk-tuk/auto. 
• Old Delhi – If you want to soak up the ancient atmosphere of Delhi and the thought of being surrounded by twisting lanes and spice markets is your thing, then consider staying in Purani Dilli – arguably the true heart of India’s capital city. There are some beautiful Havelis (restored traders houses) which you can stay at.You’re also just a stones’ throw from the Jameh Masjid, Red Fort and Old Delhi sights at Chadni Chowk. The downside to this area is access at night – you’ll have to walk dark narrow lanes so it’s not necessarily ideal for solo female travellers – although the locals are pretty friendly and used to tourists. 
• Karol Bagh – A favourite area with tour groups (in case you’re wondering where do foreigners stay in Delhi) because of the plentiful options for mediocre, cheap hotels, Karol Bagh is a step up from Paharganj in terms of accommodation, but far from the best area to stay in Delhi. The main advantage to staying here is its location right on the metro and plentiful accommodation options, however I have never felt safe walking around this area of Delhi at night by myself, and would advise female travellers to go with other areas of Delhi instead. 
• South Delhi – If none of the above options sound appealing with avoiding touts and dodging seedy hotels along the way – I have better news! South Delhi may just be the place for you. Dotted with parks, ancient tombs and green space, wide streets, trendy restaurants, bars and cafes, South Delhi is hands down my favourite place to stay in Delhi and the best location in Delhi for safety as well as the general vibe. Although you’re a little further from the city centre here, the rest of town is easy to access via the super efficient Delhi metro. 
• Delhi Airport – Unless you only have an overnight or a few hours between flights, not many people choose the airport hotels for their stay in New Delhi, as the city is well connected to the airport and it is not a long drive (around 40 mins). However, if you want to be right next to the airport, then there are a couple of decent chain options in the AeroCity complex which is just a 5 minute drive from the airport terminal. Check if your hotel offers a shuttle service. If you’re searching for where to stay near Delhi airport, then recommended options include the Pullman AeroCity International Airport or the Aloft AeroCity .

Best Delhi Hotels – Accommodation Reviews

The imperial new delhi, connaught place.

Best for – Grand Dame on Connaught Place

While rates certainly aren’t cheap, The Imperial is a real Grande Dame that’s a must visit if you want the traditional Delhi experience in all its glory. Accommodation in Delhi doesn’t come any finer, and you get a lot for your money. Including tons of history, a beautiful pool and a position in the city centre at Connaught Place (CP). 

Stay here and you won’t have to venture far for anything. There’s a restaurant on site for every day of the week, plus a health club, a spa and that gorgeous outdoor pool. It’s a great way to beat the heat in balmy Delhi, and you won’t want to miss the amazing bar with its cocktails, either.

High ceilings, classical furnishings and crisp white linens give all accommodation here an elegant, luxurious feel. Forget hotels in Delhi near CP when you could stay right on the famous square – where better to begin or end your Indian adventure?

The Oberoi New Delhi, South Delhi

Best for – Second-to-none style and service

I highly recommend choosing hotels in South Delhi, India. The Oberoi is also one of the biggest names in Indian hospitality, so you can expect five star style and service here. It’s the ultimate in opulence and luxury. You also get a glorious green outlook, and a location very close to Humayan’s tomb and Nizamuddin train station. 

This travel sustainable hotel offers both indoor and outdoor pools, plus a wellness centre and spa. There’s also a gym, a range of restaurants and bars, and even a cigar lounge. Dining and drinking options include Chinese and Indian eateries and an open-air rooftop bar. 

This is the finest of all hotels in Delhi South, and for service and facilities it’s second to none. Deluxe rooms are good value when you compare them to the eye-watering rates you’ll pay for a suite here. Not that it isn’t worth the money.

Prakash Kutir Bed & Breakfast, South Delhi

Best for – Safe, peaceful and family-run accommodation

Not all good hotels in South Delhi cost a fortune to stay at. My personal favourite is Prakash Kutir, and I highly recommend it for solo female travellers in particular. It’s a family run homestay with lots of comfort and charm, and is situated just a few steps from Hauz Khas market. 

A yummy breakfast is served here each day. It’s Asian-style, so it’s a great chance to try something new. Vegan and gluten-free options are available too.

All accommodation at this welcoming homestay has a flatscreen TV and private bathroom, and some rooms also offer an outdoor balcony or terrace. The rooftop patio is also a great place to soak up the sights and sounds of South Delhi. Guests – like me – love the clean accommodation, helpful staff and peaceful neighbourhood here. For safe places to stay in India, this is a top pick for sure.

Zaza Stay , South Delhi

Best for – Elegant rooms at pocket-friendly prices

This is another family run option for those choosing a hotel in South Delhi by budget. It’s slightly more expensive than Prakash Kutir, but does have a really elegant feel. The Indian owner and his Scottish wife run a tight ship at this nice bed and breakfast, located just a few steps from Nizamuddin train station.

The best rooms here have balconies and garden views, and all are equipped with air conditioning, a private bathroom, free WiFi and soundproofing. This hotel is also great for solo female travellers seeking a safe, comfortable place to stay. 

A good breakfast is served here each day and the staff are very welcoming and helpful. The location is quiet, and the fact that rooms are soundproofed also guarantees you a good night’s sleep at this accommodation in New Delhi.

Bloomrooms @ New Delhi Railway Station, Paharganj

Best for – Late arrivals and early departures by train

If you’re arriving late or departing early and need to stay in Paharganj, Bloomrooms is the pick of the bunch. It’s just across from the train station, and also only a couple of miles from city attractions like Connaught Place. This place offers cheap accommodation in Delhi, and the white and yellow colour scheme inside and out looks very attractive. 

Rooms here have all you need for a pleasant stay, including air conditioning, an en suite bathroom, a flat screen TV and a work desk. The front desk is open 24 hours, and with luggage storage, a tour desk and a safe deposit box it’s well set-up for those on the move. 

There’s a good range of single, twin and double rooms to choose from, and all are soundproofed for a restful stay in this hectic part of the city. For New Delhi accommodation by the station, this is my top recommendation.

Hotel Sopan Heights , Karol Bagh

Best for – Metro access and park views

If you need to stay in Karol Bagh, then Sopan Heights is a decent option to go for. This area is often a tour operator’s idea of where to stay in India. Though I don’t think it’s the best part of town, it is very convenient for the metro station just 250 yards away. 

The rooms here are what you’d pay so much more for in the likes of Europe and North America, and there are some triples as well as doubles. All come with satellite TV, air conditioning and soundproofing, and a bonus of staying here is that there’s a restaurant on site with a terrace. 

The hotel overlooks a local park, which makes for a more pleasant view. For three star accommodation in New Delhi, the standard here is hard to beat.

Dharampura Haveli, Old Delhi

Best for – History, heritage and Indian culture

For a real sense of heritage and place, stay at this beautiful Haveli in the heart of Old Delhi. The ancestral home has been painstakingly restored to its former glory. Not only that, but Old Delhi has an authentic Indian ambience. With a spice market nearby, this is arguably the best place in Delhi for shopping too. 

The hotel is the deserving recipient of a UNESCO award for heritage and cultural restoration, and the setting is the main reason to choose this place. Expect stunning marble floors, sumptuous silky fabrics and pretty feature windows at every turn. 

There’s a restaurant on site here, and couples can also wander the lanes of Chandni Chowk to find a good local eatery. At weekends, you can experience a traditional Kathak show here, and as well as Hindu dancing a seven course chef’s tasting menu is served. Particularly recommended when you’re visiting Delhi for the first time.

Bloomrooms @ Janpath, Connaught Place

Best for – A budget stay near Connaught Place

Affordable hotels near CP in Delhi can be hard to find – but I’ve tracked down this budget friendly option in an incredibly central location. Like my recommendation by the train station, this is a Bloomrooms property, so it’s bright, clean and comfortable. 

You can expect four star facilities when choosing Bloomrooms at Janpath (which is the name of the lane it’s situated on) – and can even park a car on site. Other amenities include a communal guest lounge, a restaurant, currency exchange and a concierge service. 

King and twin rooms are offered at this place, and each comes with air conditioning, a private bathroom, free WiFi and a flatscreen TV. For good hotels near Connaught Place in Delhi without a high price tag, you won’t find anything better than this.

Let’s Bunk Poshtel, South Delhi

Best for – Remote working or a sociable stay

Let’s Bunk Poshtel is one of the top hotels near South Delhi’s Deer Park. In fact it offers more than just accommodation, as it also has co-working space and a gourmet cafe. I recommend this one if you want to work remotely from your accommodation, or when you want to meet fellow travellers while staying somewhere more luxurious than a hostel. 

The hotel can be found in one of the best parts of South Delhi, and there’s more of a party vibe here at weekends than during the working week. Book in here and you can enjoy stylish four star accommodation, a great breakfast and access to the on site bar and restaurant. 

This is also one of the best ​​places near Delhi city centre for those who want to explore by bike. A good range of cuisine is also a highlight, and you can sample Chinese, Belgian and American specialities at the eatery here.

Lutyen’s Bungalow, South Delhi

Best for – High-end shopping & family stays with a pool

If you’re wondering where to stay in Delhi with a family, then add Lutyen’s Bungalow to your shortlist. This Colonial style bungalow close to Khan market has a pleasant outdoor pool for kids to splash around in, and there’s also a children’s play park in the grounds. The garden is also beautiful and very spacious, so they can run around freely here. 

You can book single or double rooms at this hotel. Kids’ high chairs are supplied for guest use, and accommodation also has tea and coffee making facilities, satellite TV and air conditioning. A good breakfast is available daily, and Indian food can also be served upon request. 

When you want to know where to stay in New Delhi, India and you’re travelling with kids, this lovely property in one of the city’s safest areas has to be a contender. Just book as soon as you can as rooms fill up really quickly. As it’s arguably the best guest house in Delhi for families, it’s easy to see why that’s the case.

I did a lot of research prior to this trip and one name kept coming up time and time again: Oberoi hotels.

This is a chain synonymous with Indian luxury, with some very highly regarded resorts dotted around the country. However, in Delhi, the Lodhi had always appealed more, as a result of some rooms having private pools and the fact that the property was formerly part of the Aman chain.

However, local friends informed me that the Lodhi lacked character and that the hub of the Delhi social scene was to be found at the newly remodelled Oberoi.

I figured that in a city environment, I’d prefer a buzzing local favourite over a quiet, resort style hotel (of which we’d see plenty elsewhere in India).

What clinched the deal for me was that I booked a multi city itinerary with Oberoi, and in selecting the Oberoi in Delhi, it significantly reduced the cost of my stays in more expensive Oberoi properties elsewhere in India.

I booked this via the Virtuoso booking program. Virtuoso bookings always match the best rate on the Oberoi website but ALSO extras such as:

A perk of booking a Premier Plus Room is that complimentary, return airport transfers are included.

Either way, I would always recommend using the hotel car service when arriving in a new country, especially one as renowned for its chaotic driving as India!

At the airport, we were greeted by a very courteous and smartly dressed Oberoi employee. He was extremely helpful in helping us to find an ATM and even hot spotted our phones so that we would have access to data within the airport.

The vehicle was very spacious and comfortable, with water, wifi and newspapers provided.

As first impressions go, this was truly excellent. The level of polish and professionalism was notable.

Despite a rather late arrival (thanks to the delay of our flight on Lufthansa First Class ), we were met by the deputy GM upon arrival, who warmly welcomed us to the property as staff draped flowers around our necks.

This is the kind of arrival ceremony you’d expect at a relaxed resort location, but it immediately set the tone for a property that aims to be so much more than just a business hotel.

The hotel building has been around since the 1960s and isn’t much to look at from the outside:

Once inside though, the effects of the spectacular $100M redesign, completed in 2018, were readily apparent. Aside from the striking visual design, a major part of this refurbishment involved the installation of high capacity air purifiers to the hotel.

This was originally done to combat the problem of pollution and smog in Delhi, but now also serves as a fantastic selling point during the COVID era.

The lobby area was very impressive; understated yet elegant.

The hallways leading to our room were less modern, although the butler button outside each door was a great touch.

Premier Plus Room

We opted for the Premier Plus Room category and paid in advance to guarantee it, since it is the lowest room type eligible for access to the hotel’s Residents’ Lounge.

As of 2021, Virtuoso bookings no longer permit upgrades beyond this category. For the minor increase in cost over a Premier Room, I feel that we received exceptional value.

Upon entering our room, the first thing I noticed was the view. Not the typical scenes of bustling traffic that one usually imagines when picturing Delhi:

There was parkland almost as far as the eye could see and even on the 7th floor, we witnessed an almost constant display of circling birds of prey.

The design was modern, unmistakably Indian and very clever. The beautifully carved door surround served to neatly close off the sitting area, as well as amplifying the perception of space in the walk in wardrobe, immediately adjacent.

Speaking of which, the wardrobe had ample room in which to open two suitcases and provided more than enough space to hang clothes for 5 days or so.

The bed was very comfortable and featured integrated reading lights as well as foolproof light switches, USB, universal power and…another butler button! There was also an extensive pillow menu, which could be easily ordered from using the aforementioned butler button.

We were more than happy with the standard goose down pillows though.

Opposite the bed was a 55″ TV, which sat above the minibar area. Although tea, coffee and bottled water were included in the room rate, other soft drinks weren’t. This seemed incongruous given that the Residents’ Lounge, to which we had access, provided these throughout the day – at no extra charge.

Beneath the TV, there was an iPad which could be used to control all of the electronics in the room. It could also be used to access hotel data, order room service, book spa treatments and even served as an intercom camera whenever the butler came to deliver anything.

In terms of technological integration, this is one of the most intuitive and seamless interfaces I’ve seen in any hotel room.

Full turndown service was provided in the evenings,  with slippers, breakfast menus and water placed around the bed – with curtains drawn and mood lighting switched on.

The overall footprint of the bathroom was rather compact, but the full length window and white walls, together with the oversized mirror, ensured that the space was bathed in light.

The deep soaking enamel bathtub was perfect for relaxing in after a long day of sightseeing, and the Oberoi branded toiletries had a wonderful scent and consistency.

Technology was even incorporated seamlessly into the bathroom mirror, in the form of a hidden TV screen (much like the setup at the Ritz Carlton Kyoto ).

The toilet and shower were located in separate glass fronted cubicles at the far end of the bathroom.

Aside from all of the above features, not only do all rooms face out towards an expanse of greenery, they all have wonderful sunset views too!

Leisure facilities

The sunset view above leads us smoothly on to the property’s small but serene pool. Located on the ground floor, it is accessed by passing through a spectacular courtyard…

From here, we passed a garden path, along the front of the main restaurant…

The pool was surrounded by greenery and the service was fantastic, with staff eager to help the moment they caught sight of you.

The electronic call buttons placed at every table ensured that any poolside orders would be taken at a moment’s notice, too.

However, I couldn’t help feeling that given the abundance of space, they could have designed something bigger and more opulent…like the breathtaking pools at the Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra or Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur:

The gym was very well equipped, featuring a full range of brand new Technogym equipment.

Towels, water and even raw charcoal lemonade were provided.

Residents’ Lounge

Over at the Residents’ Lounge, the drinks provisions were even more generous. Access to the lounge is granted to all hotel guests staying in room categories from Premier Plus upwards.

Staff were unwaveringly friendly, courteous and proactive. They made it their personal mission to ensure that we felt like royalty the whole time that we were there. Every time we entered or departed, we were also greeted by name.

The room was decorated in an understated and modern style, whilst still retaining something of the feel of a member’s club from a bygone era.

Seating was plentiful, and even during cocktail hour it felt exclusive and relaxed. Something that can never be said of the lounges of hotel chains that offer lounge access as a status perk.

Menus were provided whenever we sat down; in practice the prices were irrelevant. Soft drinks are complimentary at all times for residents with access (and chargeable for accompanying guests). Alcohol is only chargeable outside of cocktail hour (and at all times to accompanying guests).

Although a rather wonderful drinks trolley was wheeled around during cocktail hour, drinks choices were not limited to what was on display.

In addition to the free flowing Taittinger, we also enjoyed some expertly made cocktails as well as a variety of canapés and bar snacks.

Small snacks like biscuits and nuts were also available free of charge throughout the day, alongside the soft drinks.

Food and Drink

Elsewhere on the property, the food and beverage service was every bit as impressive (if not more so).

Breakfast at 360°

360° is open from 8am until 1am and during our stay, there was a constant buzz here. During breakfast, it was clear that not only hotel guests but also well heeled locals were in attendance. Plenty of people were dressed to impress, even in the early morning.

Given the beautiful decor, crowned by a glowing bar and an enormous, glass walled wine cellar – the elegance of the clientele was well in keeping with the surroundings.

Staff were remarkably attentive, and despite the palpable energy of the room, the tables were spaced in a way that made things feel luxuriously uncrowded.

Servers took drinks orders immediately once we took our seats, and upon promptly delivering our coffees, would take our orders for any a la carte dishes. After the first morning, staff remembered both our names and our drinks orders.

I also loved how staff noticed my camera or Kamara’s handbag and would bring leather side tables to accommodate them.

The breakfast buffet was very extensive indeed, and the food on offer was clearly of a high quality . Pastries and bread were baked on site, and the fruit selection was both varied and very fresh.

…as well as hot dishes from around the world, presented in Le Creuset stoneware.

It was great to be able to explore different regions of India on the a la carte section of the menu, too.

I can eat Eggs Benedict anywhere, but to have freshly made curries and dosas, accompanied by a variety of side dishes, is a rare treat indeed.

Breakfast here was not only delicious, it felt like a cultural experience too. Staff were unwaveringly patient and eager to explain to us in detail the history and provenance of all the dishes that we ate.

Room Service Lunch

Although the Oberoi New Delhi has a number of very highly regarded restaurants, we didn’t have a chance to eat in any of them during our brief visit to the city.

We did however order a small room service lunch one day and this was delivered very promptly, well presented and absolutely delicious. I’d take a kati roll and curries over a boring club sandwich any day!

The Oberoi’s biggest draw for non-residents of the property is Cirrus 9 bar. We visited with a local friend on a Saturday night, and the place was absolutely heaving with revellers. The views and atmosphere were great and the drinks made to the highest of international standards.

If you’re not staying on-property, you will definitely need to make a reservation on weekends (and probably weeknights too!)

The Oberoi New Delhi is a property which we almost stumbled onto accidentally, but ended up loving. The room hardware and public spaces are thoroughly modern, and service is as good as any that I have encountered in a city hotel.

I was initially hesitant to book this over The Lodhi, but having visited that former Aman property for dinner, I was very happy indeed with our choice. The Oberoi strikes a wonderful balance between feeling comfortable and residential, whilst also being busy enough to keep you feeling energised.

All too often, service can suffer at very popular hotels, but the Oberoi New Delhi handles its enduring success remarkably. It is a luxury property in the truest sense, and a similar experience in Europe would unquestionably cost many multiples of a stay here (and deliver no better an experience).

The location is wonderful too. The views of the golf course and Humayun’s tomb (a UNESCO world heritage site) provided the perfect counterbalance to the chaos of the more central areas of Delhi; sitting on the rooftop and sipping a cocktail at night, I felt a sense that I was somewhere very special indeed.

As a result of this wonderful but brief stay, I was even more excited about the stays to follow at Oberoi’s flagship Amarvilas and Udaivilas properties…

London’s Vibrant Soho Neighborhood Gets a New Hotel — With a Rooftop Bar, Maximalist Rooms, and a Great Restaurant

Of the hundreds of artworks scattered across the Broadwick Soho in London’s Soho, the most valuable might be those by Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, and Bridget Riley. But the most precious is easily overlooked. To the side of the onyx-topped bar counter at rooftop cocktail spot Flute, there’s a photo from around 1980 showing a family of three dressed as sparkly showmen, ready to perform a magic trick. The parents were the proprietors of Mon Ami seaside hotel in England’s Bournemouth, which would later go bust when budget air travel allowed Brits to sun themselves in the more reliable heat of southern Spain. Despite growing up in penury following his family’s bankruptcy, their son, Noel Hayden, made a fortune in tech. This newly opened hotel — his first hospitality venture — is a love letter to his dad, Noel Senior, and mom, Jackie. 

I was predisposed to the place as soon as I heard that story, but even without it, I would have quickly warmed to this distinctive property. Designed by locally based Swedish fantasist Martin Brudnizki, it emphasizes maximalism and English eccentricity. For the opening, two colossal, besuited, bipedal elephants were placed on plinths on the front of the property. Every color and pattern has its place: pastel pinks predominate; bathrooms might feature bright-blue leopard print. Over a drink by the fireplace at residents-only lounge The Nook, the hotel’s manager David Monson told me Hayden had asked Brudnizki to create “a timeless home from home.” The result may be more kitsch and quirky than such a brief would typically indicate, but then again, Monson explained Broadwick Soho’s figurative homeowner would be someone suitably outré and fabulous — when we discussed possible occupants, Iris Apfel came up. 

That sense of theatrically sits easily here: the hotel is minutes away from much of the West End (London’s Broadway), and Soho has always sheltered the city’s creatives, gay scene, and alternative communities. Alongside Flute, with its Mary Poppins views of the city’s rooftops and other more touristy attractions such as the London Eye, those guests will have access to basement-dwelling Dear Jackie and street-level Bar Jackie. The former is an Italian restaurant named for Hayden’s mother while also paying tribute to other powerhouse women with the moniker (in Britain, as in the U.S., that typically infers Ms. Kennedy Onassis and Ms. Collins, alongside Ms. Stallone — Sylvester’s mother came to prominence in the U.K. after appearing in a popular series of Celebrity Big Brother ). The latter venue is an all-day bar and café that serves unpretentious sharing dishes for lunch and cocktails, which at £12 a pop are refreshingly accessibly priced for a high-end hotel in central London. 

Where Broadwick Soho does fall short is its lack of other facilities. There’s no spa, pool, or gym, although the team can arrange access to nearby venues. And while the newly opened property is yet to finalize what it will offer guests in terms of privileged local experiences and activities, head concierge Alba assured me there are plans to create imaginative connections between Broadwick Soho guests and the neighborhood’s many exciting businesses and creatives: “Soho is our playground, we’re proud to be part of this community.”

The hotel’s unconventional design seems to be stage one of a broader plan to ensure its long-standing impact in a district where quirks have always been appreciated. Here’s more about what you can expect at Broadwick Soho .

• Minimalists aside, most guests will delight in the hotel’s aesthetic — it feels like there’s some cute little detail to discover in every corner.
• This is the first hotel I’ve visited stocked with Sicilian brand Ortigia’s pretty toiletries, packed in recyclable aluminum tubes and intended for guests to take away.
• Alongside being homely and buzzy, Dear Jackie serves consistently delicious dishes.
• Flute’s cocktails are pitch-perfect, and the engagingly eclectic setting makes the bar very date-friendly.
• The Soho setting means you’re a short amble from many of London’s best theaters, bars, and restaurants.

A touch more aesthetically restrained than the hotel’s boisterous public areas, the 57 bedrooms feature unique artworks, jazzy prints, and, occasionally, gorgeous brass drinks cabinets that Jaipur artisans have handcrafted to resemble cutesy elephants. Sometimes with standalone tubs, tiled bathrooms are pristine and deliver fantastically invigorating water pressure — though some indeterminate, ambient noise emanating somewhere from mine, in room number 402, was occasionally irritating. Other little touches, like free on-demand movies, a jumbo bowl of gummy bears (irresistible) as a welcome amenity, and minibars stocked with interesting goodies, combine to encourage cozy nights in.

Given the hotel’s broader lack of facilities, the Broadwick Soho team goes all out to ensure the F&B offering wows guests. It looks gorgeous with its intimate snugs, walls decorated with handmade crockery, and colorful ceramic table tops custom-made in Positano. Our unfussy but punchy puttanesca pasta was superb (and good value at £14); big as a fist and full of flavor, a serving of monkfish came with a kick of ‘nduja. Bar Jackie feels a bit more perfunctory, with its menu of quick and easy sharing dishes (arancini with walnuts and puffy pinsa romana pizzas, for example), and tables are squeezed together tightly, so expect every word of your conversation to be heard by others if it’s busy. During breakfast, I could barely focus on my pillowy buttermilk pancakes as I endured the tech bro beside me droning on ceaselessly about his latest triumphs and investments. A nicely edited snacks menu is on hand at Flute if you fancy something light (say tuna tostadas or spring rolls) to accompany your cocktail. 

Guests have access to The Nook residents-only lounge, but beyond enjoying the bedrooms themselves and availing of preferential restaurant and bar reservations, that’s pretty much the only client benefit. It is a lovely, busy space, though, with a flickering fireplace on the go and an unpretentious light bites-style menu. Plus, anyone’s welcome to choose a tune to spin on its integrated record player — the selection on offer includes options from British music titans such as Sade and The Rolling Stones.

Despite the endearing family-friendly backstory, this is a hotel for adults.

A number of accessible rooms have been adapted for guests with limited mobility and also feature visual, sound, and vibrating alarm systems. Sustainability-wise, the hotel makes the same "we care" claims as every other new property. There’s a notable avoidance of single-use plastics. Still, I doubted a statement asserting the business pays “careful consideration” to where produce is sourced when I saw they import their bottled water from Italy.

You’re right in the middle of Soho, once the center of London’s night-time economy and a den of iniquity packed with sex shops and brothels. Things have quietened significantly in recent decades, but there’s no shortage of pubs nearby. Strict licensing laws mean they’re not open all hours, and Broadwick Soho is also very well insulated — I didn’t notice external clamor during my stay. You’re close to various tube lines for public transport, including Tottenham Court Road, which now offers super-speedy Elizabeth Line train connections to Heathrow.

As an independent property, Broadwick Soho isn’t part of some global loyalty scheme — but it feels like the proprietors want to provide good value. Its restaurant and bar prices are commendably accessible compared to other luxury hotels in London. Plus, Soho itself is more accommodating than nearby Mayfair and Knightsbridge. For some low-cost, high-brow culture, you’re an easy walk from the superb National Gallery — and like London’s other major museums and galleries, it’s free entry. Including breakfast, room rates at Broadwick Soho start from £595 a night.

Legendary talk show host and hot wing evangelist returns to television with hilarious new Max travel show

The key to understanding Conan O’Brien’s comedy is knowing that it comes from a point of kindness. Yes, I know in this age of comics punching down , this kind of compliment may leave you with a neon “Must Avoid!” sign flashing in your bleary eyes — but stay with me.

Conan’s three-decade run as a talk show host ended in 2021 under less-than-optimal circumstances , as he wound down his TBS show during the pandemic year. He talked to longtime sidekick Andy Richter , who sat among dozens of cardboard cutout fans. O’Brien quipped that they were last in line for the vaccine because the CDC had looked at the shows and “they said ours is the least essential of pretty much all the non-essential shows.”

There was some truth in that, but Conan had already started his move to other outlets , starting with his “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast in 2018.

The podcast is funny and sweet, especially the pre-interview segments with longtime associate Sona Movsesian and producer Matt Gourley. Conan mocks Sona’s legendarily bad work habits. and Gourley’s flea market predilections, but any kind of comedic acid is reserved for the self-lacerating O’Brien. (On a recent episode, Conan runs down his own looks, and it is cruel and hilarious, but part of me is thinking, “Dude, cut yourself a break.”). The only time things get contentious is when Conan visited by longtime friend Kevin Nealon — perhaps the podcast’s best episodes.

The podcast had an offshoot called “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan,” on which O’Brien would talk to a fan, often in a faraway land. That led to O’Brien traveling to Norway, Thailand, Ireland and Argentina to meet them. Why? Well, a dour and ominous narrator, aka Werner Herzog, offered this rationale at the beginning of each episode: “Once a proud talk show host, he’s been driven by a changing ecosystem to a drier and harsher climate: the weekly podcast. Here , without the nourishment of his studio audience, this clown with dull , tiny eyes, the eye of a crudely painted doll , is forced to feed on that meagerest of morsels: the random call-in fan. Unhinged by the feral scent of their mild enthusiasm. He scavenges in distant lands uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition , and the occasional selfie.”

It’s a self-deprecating bit, but it’s also the truth. Conan has been doing travel shows for years, most notably one to Movsesian’s native Armenia , as well as a chaotic trip to Finland where O’Brien is treated as a god because of his physical resemblance to the Finnish president who happens to be a woman. He clearly loves the journey. And he loves the comedy set piece–see his classic “Old Timey Baseball” opus — which has always been an essential part of his appeal.

The encounters work because O’Brien doesn’t treat his new friends as fools — rather , he revels in the fact that he is the fool. (See his instant-classic appearance on “Hot Ones,” the show where interviews are conducted while the celebrity consumes increasingly acidic chicken wings. Conan rhapsodizes on comedy being all around us as green-yellow mucus drips down his nose.) Of course, there are exceptions made for old friends. Conan goes out for asada in Buenos Aires with the effete and erudite Jordan Schlansky, a longtime producer and frenemy. Schlansky and Conan are the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon of American cable , and on his TBS show and podcast the two have tangled over Japanese customs, Conan hosting Schlansky’s bachelor party in his own office, and Schlansky hiding an expensive Espresso machine in an inaccessible part of their offices. (As with the Courtney Thorne-Smith segment, Conan’s visceral malice toward Schlansky works because it is so out-of-character).

During the Argentina episode, they get into a fierce argument about the proper pronunciation of the word “tango,” Conan then licks Schlansky’s favorite cut of meat — wait, that came out wrong. After, they go on an ill-fated trip to the Pampas, where both fail spectacularly at gaucho life.

Not everything works. O’Brien does a self-referential bit about the expensive drone he is using on the first show , and for the next four episodes I am distracted every time I see a beautiful shot thinking about the drone’s specifications and capabilities. Some of the stuff goes on a bit long, but so does my writing.

These are minor quibbles. If you’re a Conan fan, you’ll treasure the trips, just like his completists treasure encounters with a masturbating bear. The series ends with Conan tracing his family’s roots in Ireland. He comes across his ancestor’s land, makes a few jokes, but then looks at the land, clearly moved. Conan O’Brien has played the fool long enough; we grant him this moment of humanity with all our hearts.

'Conan O'Brien Must Go' is side-splitting evidence of life beyond late night TV

To be honest, when I first heard Conan O'Brien was ending his TV talk show in 2021, I assumed news that he might turn to variety shows and online programs to continue his career was some combination of face-saving and wishful thinking.

But after watching the four episodes of his new Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , it's now obvious — even to a thickheaded critic like me — that leaving late night TV really was liberating for O'Brien. He's leveraged his unique sensibility into several different podcasts, a deal with Sirius XM , specials featuring other stand-up comics and now this travel series for Max — which resembles jokey specials he did for cable channel TBS back in the day.

And as the late night TV genre crumbles under sagging viewership and the decline of traditional media, O'Brien's renaissance also provides an example for the future — where fertile comedy minds and talented performers can spread their work over a much larger canvas.

O'Brien already made a splash recently with his brilliantly maniacal appearance on the interview-while-eating-hot-wings show Hot Ones , slobbering over hot sauces while claiming, as he was checked over by a fake doctor, that "I'm fine! I'm perfectly f*****g fine!"

This is the place where O'Brien shines — he's called it "this strange phantom intersection between smart and stupid" — and it's on full, freakish, super silly display in every episode of Conan O'Brien Must Go .

The conceit of the show is pretty simple. O'Brien heads overseas to visit average folks in Norway, Argentina, Thailand and Ireland who had once Zoomed in to speak with him on the podcast Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan . Sometimes the visits seem like a surprise — he catches one aspiring Norwegian rapper in shorts and Crocs after popping up on his doorstep — and others seem a bit more planned, including his visit to a radio show with about four listeners in Buenos Aires.

Each episode begins with a solemn monologue which sounds like it is delivered by the film world's most eccentric voice, German filmmaker and actor Werner Herzog (he's not credited in the show and when asked, a publicist at Max shared a quote from O'Brien: "I can neither confirm nor deny the voice in question.")

The torturous accent by "Herzog" makes every line sound absurdly hilarious, describing O'Brien as "the defiler ... with dull, tiny eyes ... the eyes of a crudely painted doll ... he scavenges in distant lands, uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition and the occasional selfie."

Now that's smart. And oh so stupid.

Fans of O'Brien's Conan Without Borders specials on TBS already know what his style is when he tackles a travel show — throwing himself into outrageous reactions and situations while working his quirky brand of improvised conversations with hapless bystanders.

In the Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , that includes O'Brien offering screechy vocals onstage during a performance of a Norwegian emo/rap band. Or asking provocative questions of a couple therapist/sex expert. Or getting beat up in a "fight" with a 10-year-old boy in a bar.

It's all an excuse for O'Brien to unleash his energetic wit, taste for silly absurdity and skill at drawing laughs from sympathetic — if often befuddled — strangers. Whether you enjoy this special will depend on how you feel about O'Brien's style, which can feel a bit like the world's best class clown doing everything possible to make you crack a smile.

(Rent a family in Norway so they can say goodbye when he gets on a SeaCraft? Check. Get local artists to paint a mural of O'Brien, a soccer star and The Pope on the side of a building in Argentina? Double check.)

But what amazes in a larger sense is how O'Brien has turned his sensibility into a comedy brand to fuel work on many different platforms. Leaving late night TV as late night left him
