About the authors

Anne howard.

Born in Hollywood, schooled in Amish Country, and trained in New York City, Anne Collins Howard followed her childhood dream to be a writer (when rock star didn't work out.) She worked up the ranks in magazine publishing going from an intern at InStyle to managing editor of ElleDecor.com, only to trade her stable day job for an indefinite honeymoon with her volleyball-partner-turned husband, Mike Howard. Anne and Mike started HoneyTrek.com in 2011 to share their global adventures with family and friends, but as the years went on and stories of the “World's Longest Honeymoon” spread to international news outlets, they've since grown their HoneyTrek family to over 275,000. HoneyTrek.com is an acclaimed travel site for hundreds of the world’s most spectacular destinations across seven continents, and a trusted resource for insider recommendations, practical tips, and inspiring stories. Ultimate Journeys for Two takes their six years on the road and culls it down to their favorite 75 destinations and best advice for couples travel. Their second book Comfortably Wild has sent them on a 56,000-mile and two-year quest for the best glamping destinations in North America.

Firm believers that love and travel make the world a better place, the Howards seek to inspire others through their books, public speaking, magazine writing, and travel agency, HoneyTrek Trips. Connect with Anne and Mike across social media @HoneyTrek.

Mike Howard

A serial entrepreneur since the age of eight, Mike Howard went from starting a button business in his basement to launching one of the world's first social networks. After growing Kiwibox to 2.6 million members, he took the company public in 2009 and left to become a digital marketing consultant working with Fortune 500 companies. A fateful trip to Munich for Oktoberfest got him thinking more about world travel and exploring with his true love. He proposed to Anne Howard and in 2011 they started their new life together with a honeymoon around the globe. HoneyTrek.com was created to share their adventures with family and friends, but as the years went on and stories of the “World's Longest Honeymoon” spread to international news outlets, they've grown their HoneyTrek family to over 275,000. HoneyTrek.com is an inspirational travel hub for hundreds of the world’s most spectacular destinations across seven continents, and an acclaimed resource for insider recommendations, practical tips, and inspiring stories. Ultimate Journeys for Two takes their 5+ years on the road and culls it down to their favorite 75 destinations and best advice for traveling with the one you love. Their second book Comfortably Wild has sent them on a 56,000-mile and two-year quest for the best glamping destinations in North America. You can follow Mike and Anne's ongoing adventures across social media @HoneyTrek.

Ultimate Journeys for Two - Adventure travel guide

Book Review | Ultimate Journeys for Two: A Refreshingly Different Adventure Travel Book

Ultimate Journeys for Two is the adventure travel book we’ve been waiting for. Through their refreshing, keep-it-real style, Mike & Anne Howard deliver unique perspective that’s both entertaining and informative, effectively revealing the true essence of over 75 remarkable destinations.

The book offers insights into many elements of travel, reminding us that people are mostly good, the world is most definitely beautiful, and that sometimes, when you plan less , you get more out of your travels.

While you can put a price on a trip, the opportunity cost of not going is far greater. And if you’re given the option, choose the adventurous path. After all, the authors remind us, today is the youngest you will ever be.

But most importantly,  Ultimate Journeys   for Two   reinforces the idea that experiences are almost always made better when shared with the person you love most.

Meet the authors

As a professional traveling couple, Mike & Anne have pretty much nailed it. They left for their Honeymoon in January 2012…and have kept it rolling ever since. For the past 7 years, they’ve visited over 50 countries across all 7 continents, chronicling the epic journey through their website HoneyTrek: The World’s Longest Honeymoon . Most recently, the multi-talented team turned to the printed page with  Ultimate Journeys   for Two , published by National Geographic.

Ultimate Journeys   for Two represents a milestone for the authors and a new category for National Geographic: couples adventure travel. Since the outset of the project, Mike & Anne have been humbled by the opportunity to serve as pioneers for the iconic travel brand.

Having had the opportunity to meet and speak with the couple during a recent travel conference in Austin, we were struck by the humility and down-to-earth nature of these self-described serial adventurers . We love their style, and we’re confident you will too!

Ultimate Journeys for Two - Adventure travel guide

Ultimate Journeys for Two: format & flow

Ultimate Journeys   for Two artfully blends the informative elements of a guidebook with the esthetic appeal of a coffee table book. The book also introduces a different approach to the traditional country/region/city format of most guidebooks.

The chapters are organized by destination type : beaches, jungles, deserts, snow & ice, road trips, history & architecture (to name a few). This approach allows you to explore based on interest, then discover amazing new places—across the world—that match your style.

If a past trip to the Swiss Alps leaves you yearning for more cowbell, turn to the Mountains chapter and find alternative mountainous beauty across the ranges of Nepal, Rwanda or The Philippines.

Ultimate Journeys for Two - Adventure travel guide

Ultimate Journeys for Two features more than 75 destinations, spread across these 11 chapters. Each destination is covered by a 2-page spread that includes a concise, easy-to-read profile: history, culture, when to go, places to stay and other useful tips.

Recommended activities include an adventure rating to indicate level of intensity. Nice!

Ultimate Journeys for Two - Adventure travel guide

The people behind the places

As you turn the pages of  Ultimate Journeys   for Two , it’s hard not to feel as though you’re along for the ride with Mike & Anne. Each destination includes a brief personal anecdote that paints a vivid picture in your mind and transports you to that place.

Re-live their epic sunset feast in the majestic Urubamba Valley of Peru. Join a pickup game of volleyball in Vietnam. Paraglide over the cascading travertines and turquoise pools of Pamukkale, Turkey. Or find yourself suddenly recruited off the street (as they were) to carry rocks on your head and help build a home for a couple of Indonesian newlyweds.

Ultimate Journeys for Two is built on a foundation of Mike & Anne’s experiences. But as quickly and effortlessly as their writing pulls you into each of their stories, the couple smoothly fades back behind the scenes, allowing the spotlight to re-focus on the place, its people, and the possibility of inspiring your adventures and memories.

Universal travel wisdom

In many ways,  Ultimate Journeys   for Two  offers truly universal wisdom and advice that can lead to more fulfilling experiences for any traveler.

One level deeper, the book explores concepts that will appeal to specific niche audiences:

  • Give-back opportunities for the positive-impact traveler
  • Extreme adventures that’ll fuel any adrenaline-junkie’s fire
  • Affordable destinations and cost-cutting strategies for the budget traveler
  • Helpful commentary on remaining culturally conscious, for the less-seasoned traveler

But in the end, the book is called Ultimate Journeys for Two for a reason.

Finding balance. Reaching compromise. Conquering fears. Embracing the unexpected. Adding a bit of romance. These are all important dynamics of couples travel, and they’re common themes throughout the book. After all, the authors have been on the World’s Longest Honeymoon, and they offer a wealth of knowledge for those interested in wandering the globe and cohabitating as a team of 2.

Give the gift of Ultimate Journeys for Two

This holiday season, give your favorite globetrotting couple a copy of  Ultimate Journeys   for Two  on Amazon Prime or have it personalized by the authors .

For the other travelers in your life, just tell them to close their eyes during the romantic parts! Or better yet, tell them to take copious notes, and prepare to sweep their next international romantic encounter off his or her feet 😉

How to spend a perfect weekend in Moscow

Feb 11, 2020 • 5 min read

ultimate journeys for two travel book

Moscow enjoyed the status of capital for most of Russia’s history, except for a relatively brief period (about two hundred years), when the Tsar and the government relocated to St Petersburg . But the Bolsheviks moved the capital back to Moscow in 1918, and today it’s an extremely diverse city. It can easily take a couple of weeks to see all of its sights, but if you've only got a weekend to explore, here's how to have two perfect days in Moscow.

Exterior of St Basil's Cathedral at Red Square on a sunny autumn morning.

Start your weekend in Moscow by acquainting yourself with top-notch Russian cuisine at Grand Cafe Dr Zhivago . Located on the first floor of the historical hotel National and overlooking the Kremlin, it’s definitely one of the best breakfast spots in the city. Try millet porridge with crawfish, pearl barley porridge with oxtail or traditional cottage cheese with raisins and candied fruit.

Set aside at least half a day for Russian capital’s major attractions: the Red Square and the Kremlin . To reach the Kremlin, cross the street from Dr Zhivago and walk through the Alexander Garden to the main entrance at the Kutafya Tower . Check out all the cathedrals, including Archangel cathedral with all the tsars’ tombs and Uspensky cathedral with medieval icons. Pause to look at the famous Tsar Bell and climb Ivan the Great Bell Tower to enjoy some great views.

Zaryadye - a landscape and architectural park. Many people stroll over concrete walkways surrounding a rounded building in parkland.

Exit and walk to the Red Square through the Alexander Garden, where, if lucky, you can see the change of guard. If you’re feeling hungry, stop by the food court at Okhotny Ryad shopping complex to pick up a snack.

The Red square is dominated by four buildings of equal historical importance: the Kremlin's most famous Spasskaya (Saviour) Tower , with a clock and fourteen bells that chime national anthem four times a day (6am, noon, 6pm, midnight), St Basil's Cathedral , Moscow's best-known symbol with its multi-colored domes, Lenin’s Mausoleum , the resting place of the leader of the 1917 October revolution, and GUM , Moscow's oldest department store, topped with a glass roof, designed by one of Russia's most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov.

A guide to shopping in Moscow

Right behind the St Basil’s it is the relatively new Zaryadye Park , designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, famous for its work on the High Line in New York City. Zaryadye showcases flora from all the climate zones of Russia, which is the largest country in the world. The floating bridge at the edge of the park is one of the biggest selfie magnets in Moscow, providing spectacular views of the river and the city skyline as the background.

Another Zaryadye attraction is a glass pavilion that hosts restaurant Voskhod  (Sunrise) – a perfect spot for your lunch or early dinner. Voskhod focuses on dishes from all fifteen former Soviet Union republics and its inside looks like a Soviet-made spaceship with great views of the Moscow river. Try Azeri home-made pasta or trout from Lake Sevan in Armenia.

After all that walking and exploring you need some quality downtime and what better way to spend it than relaxing for a couple of hours at the famous Sanduny  traditional Russian hot bath. Make sure to get a massage with birch sticks!

You might still have time to go to Winzavod Center – a creative cluster with galleries housed at a former wine factory. Galleries like XL , pop/off/art and Ovcharenko always have something on, most likely a cutting-edge Russian contemporary art exhibition. Finish the evening hanging out at one of the best Moscow bars – try socialites’ paradise Noor Electro , co-joined with one of Moscow’s avant-garde theatres or Powerhouse Moscow , located in a 19th-century mansion, which is famous for live indie and jazz band performances. Both serve great food, too.

Young people sit on a bench looking at a large painting on the wall. It's by Russian artist Alexander Ivanov, called 'The appearance of Christ to the People' and is displayed in the Tretyakov gallery

Power up for a busy day ahead at one of Moscow’s trendiest coffee/breakfast spots,   Nude . Located in the upscale, well-heeled neighborhood of Patriarch’s Ponds, Nude offers a wide range of breakfast dishes, including scrambled eggs, toast, porridge and banana bread. Book ahead as it might be busy on a weekend morning.

After checking out the Patriarch's Ponds, which features prominently in Mikhail Bulgakov’s perennial novel The Master and Margarita , devote the rest of the morning and early afternoon to exploring Moscow’s best museums. Depending on your tastes, pick one of the following: Tretyakov Gallery for traditional Russian art, from medieval icons to the early 20th century;  New Tretyakov for 20th century and contemporary art as well as great temporary exhibitions;  Pushkin Museum for one of the greatest collections of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art in the world; and the Garage Museum for some eye-opening modern-art exhibitions.

A blurred train travelling at speed through a station with a tiled wall and a station guide.

Whichever museum or gallery you choose, be sure to go to LavkaLavka for lunch, certainly one of the best places to try new Russian cuisine, which is a contemporary reading of centuries-old recipes. It’s one of the few places to try polugar , which is, allegedly, what Russians called vodka in the 19th century.

When you talk about Russian culture, literary giants usually pop into mind: the likes of Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Anton Chekhov. There are plenty of literary museums in Moscow, but if you had to pick one, visit Tolstoy Estate Museum , located just opposite the headquarters of Yandex, the Russian equivalent of Google. Every little detail has been restored just the way it looked when Tolstoy lived here in the 1880s–90s.

Leave some time for exploring the Moscow Metro : every station is an architectural masterpiece in its own right. Our favorites include Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya and Kievskaya. Later, unwind at one of dozens of Moscow’s craft beer places . Try  Jawsspot , named after one of the leading breweries in Russia, Jaws from the Urals region, which also serves decent pizza and salads.

You can get stuck in a traffic jam if you travel by car, taxi or bus, that won’t happen if you take the train. The Aeroexpress commutes between Belorussky Station in the city and the railway station at the airport, located on the south side of the airport at Terminal E. An automated people mover (APM) runs between this station and terminals A and B. The Aeroexpress departs every 30 minutes, travel time is 35 minutes.

From metro station Belorusskaya at Belorussky Station, you can travel by metro to the city centre and other parts of Moscow. The journey time from metro station Belorusskaya to metro station Teatralnaya close to Red Square is only 5 minutes.

Aeroexpress tickets The prices are listed below, an Aeroexpress ticket including a ride with the metro, tram or (trolley) bus costs 560 RUB, the price for a subway ticket is 55 RUB. You can buy tickets for the Aeroexpress at the stations, but it is cheaper to do this online. Please consult website and timetable Aeroexpress for more information.

Aeroexpress

SAVING TIPS: Tickets can be bought at the airport, but online it is easier and cheaper (450 RUB one way, 900 RUB return). A group ticket can be used by four people and costs 1,100 RUB for a single journey and 1,800 RUB for a return (valid for 30 days). The price is the same online and from the ticket machine. Aeroexpress trains run without stopping, besides you can use free WiFi aboard since early 2015.

Bus and metro to Moscow

It is more economical to travel by bus and metro to the centre of Moscow. Needless to say, taking a direct train is easier and faster. With bus 817 and bus 948 you can get in 35 minutes to metro station Planernaya (northernmost station metro line 7). With bus 851 and bus 949 it takes 25 minutes to metro station Rechnoy Vokzal (northernmost station metro line 2). The price of a bus ticket is 57 RUB or 80 RUB.

From both stations you can take the metro to the centre of Moscow, station Kuznetskiy Most for metro line 7 (travel time: 31 minutes) and station Teatralnaya for metro line 2 (travel time: 23 minutes). Metro station Kuznetskiy Most is a short distance from the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre. The total journey time is at least one hour. If the bus ends up in a traffic jam, the journey can take a lot longer.

Tickets for the subway priced 55 RUB are available from the ticket vending machines. You can also buy a day ticket (yediniy) for public transport in Moscow for 200 RUB, it is valid for 24 hours. During the night you can travel by bus H1 between the airport and the city every half hour. Please consult buses to and from Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport and  website Moscow Metro for more information.

“The metro stations with the most central location in Moscow are Okhotny Ryad (M1), Teatralnaya (M2) and Revolution Square (M3), at a short distance from Red Square, Kremlin and GUM.”

The Kremlin and Red Square in Moscow, Russia

The Kremlin and Red Square were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990.

Russian secrets? Here’s the ultimate Moscow itinerary

Tour architectural wonders, discover Soviet history, and savor local flavors in this gold-domed city.

Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here you will find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers. Moscow’s spirit mirrors its uncontainable size. Muscovites, the city’s approximately 12 million residents, are always on the run, so be prepared to keep pace with their energy. Here’s how to make the most of three days in Moscow .

Day 1: Mosaics and metro stations

9 a.m. Navigate the labyrinth of the Moscow metro , a living, breathing work of art crisscrossing the metropolis. Expect marble arches and pillars, gilded mosaics, and sparkling chandeliers. Each station is unique. Some of the most beautiful stations are Kievskaya and Prospekt Mira (brown line); Mayakovskaya (dark green line); and Ploschad Revolutsii , Arbatskaya and Elektrozavodskaya (dark blue line). Getting lost on the metro is a rite of passage. However, ahead of the 2018 World Cup, most trains introduced route maps and announcements in English to make navigation easier for outsiders.

Three stations take you to Red Square, but Ploschad Revolutsii is ideal. Its platforms have numerous bronze statues of soldiers with their dogs. Locals often stop by to rub the dogs’ noses as they make a wish. ( See pictures of Moscow’s surprisingly elegant subway stations. )

9:45 a.m. Head to the iconic Red Square to see the red-bricked towers and the eastern wall of the Moscow Kremlin, Vladimir Lenin’s mausoleum, the State Historical Museum , and the psychedelically colorful domes of the St. Basil’s Cathedral . Queue early outside Lenin’s mausoleum for a spooky date with the man behind the Russian Revolution, who has rested in this tomb, preserved in chemicals, for almost 100 years .

The postcard-perfect St. Basil’s Cathedral was built in the 16th century to commemorate Tsar Ivan the Terrible’s victory over the Khanate of Kazan and the transformation of Moscow into a major center of power. Drop in for a quick visit or keep walking south towards the Moskva River and the Bolshoi Moskvaretskii Bridge for spectacular views of the Kremlin and the Red Square.

a woman in the rain in central Moscow, Russia

Another structure that will catch your eye is the golden-domed Cathedral of Christ the Savior , just southwest of the Kremlin. Unlike St. Basil’s, this Cathedral did not survive the communist persecution of religion. The original was destroyed in 1931 and the area was converted to an open-air swimming pool, the largest in the world. The fall of communism brought with it religious freedom and the Cathedral was rebuilt in the 1990s. If you turn around, you will see one of the “Seven Sisters,” the Stalinist monoliths that command Moscow’s skyline .

11:45 a.m. Head back towards the Red Square for a shopping trip at GUM (pronounced goom ), the largest department store in Russia. Much like Russia, the store has undergone many changes. Built in imperial times as a massive trading center, GUM’s Soviet-era badge of honor was being relatively better stocked than other stores. Today, it’s a glittering mall that houses Hermès and Louis Vuitton. Even if you don’t shop, the long, arched galleries and concave glass roof make it an architectural delight. Next, make your way to the third floor for Stolovaya No. 57 (Canteen No. 57), a Soviet-style restaurant with local dishes and a laid-back vibe. Try the syrniki (roughly translated as cheesecakes), buckwheat with mushroom sauce, or meat cutlets.

2 p.m. The Moscow Kremlin , the seat of the Russian Government, was built in the 15th century and houses cathedrals, museums, and unique objects from imperial Russia. Start with the Armory Chamber , a treasure trove of Fabergé eggs, imperial dresses, and gifts presented to the Tsars. Don’t miss the Diamond Fund inside the Armory where guests can marvel at the crown of Tsarina Catherine the Great.

The Bolshoi Theatre hosts ballet and opera performances, including classics like Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

Take a stroll around Cathedral Square to admire the golden domes that mushroom from Orthodox cathedrals. Look out for the 19-foot-high bronze Tsar Bell for great photo ops. The nearby Tsar Cannon is also worth a look. Wrap up in the Kremlin Garden and see if you can spot Cosmos, the lone oak tree that was planted by Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, two days after his extraordinary flight in April 1961 . ( Trees that traveled to space now live on Earth. Here’s where to find them. )

7 p.m. Finish your day with a ballet or opera performance at Bolshoi Theatre , one of the strongholds of Russian theatrical excellence since the 19th century. If you are lucky, you might be able to catch Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece Swan Lake on the stage where it premiered in 1877. Performances sell out so book in advance, and arrive early to enjoy the neoclassical building. Russians take theater seriously so wear your best outfit.

Day 2: Fine art and food

10 a.m. The extraordinary entrance to Tretyakov Gallery welcomes guests to Moscow’s most definitive collection of fine arts spanning almost a millennium. You can explore 12th-century icons and mosaics or get lost in the brushstrokes of 19th- and 20th-century Russian heavyweights such as Ivan Shishkin and Ilya Repin. The New Tretyakov wing showcases artists from the Soviet period.

1 p.m. Soak up some summer sun in one of Moscow’s most dynamic open spaces: Park Gorky , a hipster paradise that underwent a major makeover from a Soviet relic to the center of cultural life. Grab some food on the go or sit down for a meal at Grill Bar Zharovnya or La Boule . Wander through the open-air sculpture museum, Muzeon , the home of countless statues and symbols from the Soviet times. Muzeon runs next to the Moscow River and offers a great view of the almost 322-foot-high statue of Tsar Peter the Great.

7 p.m. One place you must dine in Moscow is White Rabbit . The restaurant, which has been featured among the top 50 in the world, owes its success to chef Vladimir Mukhin, whose culinary prowess was featured on Netflix’s Chef’s Table . White Rabbit serves Russian food with innovative twists; think sea urchin caviar and beetroot hummus. Quite fittingly, there is also rabbit on the menu. Did we mention the restaurant’s glass dome offers spectacular views of Moscow City?

Day 3: Markets and museums

10 a.m. If the Moscow Kremlin is stately, then the colorful Izmailovo Kremlin cultural center has a bit of a Disneyland feel to it. Built in 2007, Izmailovo is a great place for a stroll before bargain-hunting at Vernisazh , a flea market with stalls selling Cold War memorabilia. You will find stamps, banknotes, pins, propaganda posters, and even steel mugs from Soviet times. Score great deals on matryoshkas , Russian nesting dolls; khokhloma , hand-painted wooden handicrafts; and Baltic amber jewelry. Don’t miss contemporary twists on traditional Russian gifts, such as nesting dolls of modern politicians and music boxes shaped like Orthodox cathedrals. For a market of its popularity, Vernisazh prices are a steal and you can haggle without hesitation. Saturdays and Sundays are the best days to visit.

Russian nesting dolls in Moscow, Russia

Russian nesting dolls make the perfect souvenir, and are sold throughout Moscow, including at the Vernisazh flea market.

1 p.m. By now, you have probably got the sense that there is more to see in Moscow than time to see it. So pick what you crave most. Want more of Orthodox churches? Head to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Novodevichy Convent , which was once used by the women of the Tsar’s family. Still looking for souvenirs and gifts? Make your way to Stari Arbat (Old Arbat), a historical cobblestone street of shops and restaurants. Want to delve deeper into Russian history? Visit the State Historical Museum on the Red Square. A Cold War buff? The Bunker 42 Museum located 18 floors below Taganskaya metro was a strategic command center and an anti-nuclear shelter. A fan of Russian literature? Check out the Gogol House and the Bulgakov Museum . Want another serving of art? Try the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts or the Garage Museum .

8 p.m. End your stay in Moscow with a nice meal. Café Pushkin offers antique interiors, delicious Russian dishes, and five-star service. Even if you don’t eat here, grab a cup of the Pushkin chai, a signature Earl Grey blend with citrusy overtones. For casual fare, go to Varenichnaya (multiple locations), which has an extensive menu of Russian dishes and decor straight out of a Soviet poster. Mari Vanna (multiple locations) is another choice Russian chain.

Moscow is also a great place to try the food from other Soviet states. Head to Khachapuri to try the namesake khachapuri , Georgian stuffed-cheese bread. For authentic Uzbek plov , make a reservation at Uzbekistan . Want to keep enjoying the outdoors? Bar Strelka is a trendy spot with great views, excellent food, and a dance floor to keep the night going .
