Universal Studios Japan: the ever-evolving theme park

I'm not what you'd call a theme park nut. I've been to a few - mostly in Europe. I'm not a fan of stomach-churning rollercoasters designed to push you to your limits, but pretty much everything else I'm up for and enjoy.

But, if you do like stomach-churning rollercoasters, Universal Studios Japan has those . If you don't, there's still loads more worth visiting for.

I first visited Universal Studios Japan in 2002. Just past the 1st anniversary of its opening in March 2001. Here's my wife and I during that first visit - with Rocky the Flying Squirrel from Rocky and Bullwinkle .

Developers teamed up with key big names to ensure the reality matched their dreams for the park, including Shigeru Miyamoto creator of Mario and Creative Fellow at Nintendo and Mark Woodbury, President of Universal Creative.

Super Nintendo World comprises expansive and multilevel environments filled with state-of-the-art rides, interactive areas, restaurants and shops selling an array of gifts and souvenirs as brightly coloured as they are bountiful.

Latest Update: Jurassic Park closed for renovations until early 2025

USJ has announced major renovations to Jurassic Park - The Ride . These began on Monday, September 4, 2023, when the ride closed and it isn't expected to reopen until early 2025.

3.) Timed-Entry Tickets (The Wizarding World of Harry Potter/Super Nintendo World)

Have someone from your group take the Studio Passes of all the members of your group to the Timed-Entry Ticket booth in Central Park. Select you desired time of entry on the ticket machine to receive your Timed-Entry Ticket (one per group).

4.) Single Rider

By riding separate from your party, you can reduce waiting times. This service is not available on certain days or at certain hours during the day. For availability and other requirements, please ask a crew member at the attraction.

5.) Child Switch

A handy system allowing you to take turns to enjoy attractions that children cannot ride. It enables guests with children/companions who do not meet an attraction’s height or other requirements to take turns and enjoy the attraction without waiting in line again. Ask a staff member at the attraction for details.

No need to queue with special pass at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka.

Ever fantasized about spending a day at a major global theme park without having to queue or get lost amidst the sprawling labyrinth of breathtaking rides and other attractions?

Add unlimited refreshments, professional photographs and a private guide and you have the VIP Experience at Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka. In September, I excitedly hung around my neck the VIP pass that grants me free access to all attractions as my private VIP Experience tour guide Roberto greeted me with a beaming smile and whisked me to the luxuriously plush VIP lounge.

Some families were already there being briefed by guides as they sipped complimentary cool drinks and coffee among colorful movie posters, comfy sofas and spectacular views of USJ’s waterways, attractions and excited visitors.

Roberto explained everything, offered suggestions and then wrote a flexible bespoke schedule based on his expert advice and my preferences—I was feeling like a VIP even before the tour started.

It was a humid morning, and the park was bustling with energy. Keeping my comfort in mind, Roberto stressed to me that I should pace myself, take breaks, skip or repeat rides and take photos at any time.

All-Access to Attractions

universal studios japan studio tour

First was The Flying Dinosaur. As with all stops, my VIP pass allowed me to walk briskly past dozens of visitors straight to the front. A crazy, out-of-control Pteranodon seized me from behind and pulled me high into the sky to swing me 360 degrees, with nothing between me and the ground! The white-knuckle ride was exhilarating, to say the least. The loud screams and raised hands from start to finish said it all.

Similarly, Hollywood Dream—The Ride was like flying through the sky, with background music, an unbelievable thrill for adrenaline junkies.

After all the excitement, I was ready to relax—in San Francisco! USJ has recreated Fisherman’s Wharf and Chinatown. Located just off the lagoon, the area smells of fresh sea air and features Lombard’s Landing, where I relaxed for 90 minutes and perused the VIP restaurant’s excellent buffet of starters, mains and desserts along with soft drinks and alcohol. Thanks, Roberto, for arranging the rides before lunch!

I felt truly pampered, knowing that everything was taken care of. My favorite ride was the relatively serene Jaws. We got a good soaking as authentic-looking gunfire blew bloodied sharks out the water, and we laughed at the animated commentary. I immediately pledged to watch the movie again, some 40-plus years since its release.

Wizardry and Cuisine

universal studios japan studio tour

We also visited WaterWorld, which is like a real movie set with acrobatic stunts, powerful boats and real actors fighting and causing mayhem with fire, guns and explosions. Getting soaked again was well worth it for the laughs and memories!

Recreated props from my favorite films included stores, barbershops, diners and classic cars from The Godfather, Rocky, The Sting and American Graffiti. We also saw such high-energy performances with movie characters, dancers, musicians and singers as the No Limit! Parade and a 30-minute stage musical of 1970s disco hits, the Universal Monsters Live: Rock and Roll Show.

After a delightful photo session at Minion Park and mind-boggling interactive 3D shelling to score coins with Mario Kart Koopa’s Challenge at Super Nintendo World, we joined the front of the long queue to meet Princess Peach. Then we braced for our last stop: the spookily atmospheric Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Strolling the winding cobblestone streets—convincingly shiny to mimic England’s ubiquitous rainfall—lined by snowcapped shops, eateries, homes and castles felt like stepping into the pages of JK Rowling’s best- selling books.

Adding down-to-earth reality was a battered blue Ford Anglia whose windscreen was smashed after colliding with a tree. A massive steam train with a cheerful bearded driver made loud hoots and whistles, enticing people to come closer. The highlight, of course, was riding Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. I soared through the air past peaks, troughs, people, animals and places weird and wonderful. It felt like I was part of the wizarding world. After the ride, Roberto handed me a glass of cold, non-alcoholic Butterbeer—a deliciously refreshing caramel, butterscotch and cream soda concoction, which served as a wonderful prelude to dinner.

universal studios japan studio tour

After a tasty spread of sashimi, quiche, salad and ice cream served with fine French Champagne, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at the VIP restaurant, I thanked Roberto and told him the VIP Experience had exceeded my expectations.

As we strolled to the exit past zombies celebrating Halloween by scaring schoolgirls, I reflected on the fact that my VIP Experience proved to be a stunning day of adventure, surprises and fun—with no queuing, wasting time or getting lost.

Super Nintendo World

Ultimate guide to Universal Studios Japan in Osaka: top tips and hacks

All you need to know to fully enjoy the Osaka theme park: USJ app, how to avoid queues, Super Nintendo World, and more

Emma Steen

Home to the world’s first Super Nintendo World as well as iconic characters and attractions from Hello Kitty to Jaws is the fun-packed Universal Studios Japan  (USJ) in Osaka. The sprawling theme park is one of a handful around the world owned by NBC Universal, but while it shares some popular rides like Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey with its American counterparts, this Japan location also has its own set of unique thrills.

From limited time pop-ups dedicated to beloved anime franchises like Sailor Moon , to hair-raising attractions like the Jurassic Park ride, here's everything you need to know about Universal Studios Japan and how to get the most out of the mammoth park. So read this before you go.

Download the USJ app before you go

Download the USJ app before you go

With its throng of parades, performances, high-speed rides and 4D experiences, USJ draws enormous crowds every day of the year, which can often result in staggering wait times. You can keep track of how long the queue is for each attraction through the USJ app , which also offers updated information on show times, temporary ride closures and park operation hours.

The app will come in handy especially on busy days as you can use it to register your park admission tickets and obtain a digital timed-entry pass for certain attractions. The app will give you a time frame for when to show up at a specific attraction to cut down your wait time. Note that the number of timed entry passes you can get is limited.

Make sure you get a free timed entry ticket to the popular attractions

Make sure you get a free timed entry ticket to the popular attractions

The park is divided into ten areas: Super Nintendo World, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Minion Park, Universal Wonderland, Hollywood, New York, San Francisco, Jurassic Park, Amity Village, and WaterWorld. You can check out the shops, restaurants and attractions in each of these sections here .

Exploring the different areas of the park is fairly straightforward. However, accessing the Wizarding World or the new Super Nintendo World can be tricky on busy days as they have limited capacity. To guarantee access to all areas, you can purchase a Universal Express Pass online or on the day of your visit (more on this below).

Alternatively, you can get an area timed entry ticket for free via the USJ app or from one of the timed entry booths within the park. This will give you a specific time slot to access either the Wizarding World or Super Nintendo World. Availability is limited, so aim to get one early on in the day. Plus, be sure to hold on to your park admission ticket as you’ll need it to get your timed entry pass.

Super Nintendo World

Super Nintendo World

The world’s first Super Nintendo World is easily USJ’s most sought-after attraction. The section houses rides like Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge and Yoshi's Adventure, but with its careful attention to detail and cleverly designed interactive elements, the Super Nintendo World area is an attraction in and of itself.

Aside from the Nintendo-themed shops and eateries, the area also has a host of side quests and mini games for you to enjoy. Annoyingly, this requires yet another expense in the form of a ¥3,800 Super Nintendo World wristband sold at the kiosks within the area. But there’s more to this toy than meets the eye.

The wristband can be synced to your smartphone via the USJ app, which you can then use to keep track of the points you score in the mini games and see where you rank among other players. One main way to score points is by earning ‘keys’ from the three mini games in the area. Once you’ve completed all three challenges, you’ll be able to enter Browser’s castle for a showdown with the big boss.

Look through your stamp collection on the app and you’ll see that there are dozens of other ways to score points besides ‘key’ games. These include punching yellow boxes for coins the way Mario does in the video games, racing in Mario Kart, unlocking Bowser Jr's toy chest, and finding 8-bit characters, among other things. Every time you hit a yellow block or unlock a new achievement, you’ll see your points go up on your app.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

You've read the books, you've seen the films, and now you can explore the Wizarding World in real life. Complete with an impressively detailed model of Hogwarts Castle, the Hogwarts Express and an array of shops to explore in the Hogsmeade village, this area in USJ will make you feel like you’ve stepped into the magical universe of Harry Potter.

While Tokyo is anticipating the exciting launch of the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo next year, the upcoming facility will feature a different set of attractions as it’s modelled after the one in London. This means the Wizarding World in USJ will still be unique to Osaka come 2023.

If you have yet to be kitted out in your house colours, you might want to shop for a set of school robes before heading up to the castle, where adventures like the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride await. Edible treats on offer range from Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans (try at your own risk) to frothy butter beer, while wands of all shapes and sizes can be found at Ollivanders for sorcerers in training.

You might need more than just an entry ticket

You might need more than just an entry ticket

Studio Passes (general admission tickets) can be purchased online or at the park entrance. Rates for adults (age 12 and over) start at ¥8,500 while children (ages 4-11) can enter from ¥5,400 – prices vary depending on the day. If you're entering the park after 3pm, you can opt for the Twilight Pass, which starts from ¥5,900 for adults and ¥3,500 for children.

If you want to skip the long queues for popular rides, or guarantee access to areas like Super Nintendo World, you should consider buying a Universal Express Pass bundle for a few extra benefits. Different Express Passes offer different perks, ranging from prime parade viewing spots to shortened wait times for certain rides, so be sure that your bundle includes access to the attractions you want to experience most. Note that Universal Express Passes are supplementary; you still need to buy a standard park admission ticket to enter USJ.

You could also get tickets via our affiliate partner .

Universal Studios Japan (USJ) was the first theme park under the Universal Studios brand to be built in Asia. Opened in 2001 in the Osaka Bay Area , the theme park has been expanded over the years and is the most visited amusement park in Japan after Tokyo Disney Resort .

Universal Studios Japan currently has ten sections: Hollywood, New York, San Francisco, Jurassic Park, Waterworld, Amity Village, Universal Wonderland, Minion Park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World. Visitors are able to enjoy many amusement rides, ranging from child-friendly carousels to thrilling roller coasters and simulators based on popular movies such as the Minions, Shrek and Jurassic Park.

In addition to rides, the theme park offers many opportunities to take pictures with popular characters' mascots such as Snoopy, Hello Kitty and the Muppets. There are also various shows put on every day, including a night parade featuring illuminated floats.

Just outside the park's gates is Universal Citywalk Osaka , a shopping mall with multiple hotels and many restaurants and shops, including stores selling Universal Studios merchandise and Osaka souvenirs. Furthermore, the Osaka Takoyaki Museum, which is essentially a collection of several popular takoyaki vendors, is located on the mall's fourth floor.

Getting there and around

The park's entrance gate is located a five minute walk from Universal City Station on the JR Yumesaki Line (also referred to as JR Sakurajima Line). From Osaka Station , there are several direct trains per hour (15 minutes, 190 yen) and many more connections that require an easy transfer at Nishikujo Station. From Kansai Airport , take a JR airport rapid to Nishikujo Station and transfer to the JR Yumesaki Line to Universal City Station (75 minutes, 1210 yen).

Universal Studios Japan is connected by bus to Kansai Airport (50-70 minutes, 1600 yen, hourly) and Itami Airport (45 minutes, 940 yen, hourly). Some overnight buses from other cities across Japan also stop at the Universal Studios Japan.

A ferry service named "Captain Line" connects the Universal Studios Japan with the Osaka Aquarium (10 minutes, 800 yen one way, 1500 yen roundtrip, 1-2 ferries per hour). A combination ticket for the aquarium and the ferry ride can be purchased for 2900 yen (one way) or 3600 yen (roundtrip).

  • Which Universal Studios Japan Attractions To Visit Based on Your Kind of Adventure

Whether you’re a first-time or repeat traveler to Osaka , a visit to Universal Studios Japan is definitely a must. The amusement park, which opened in 2001, is one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions, housing 10 themed ‘worlds’ inspired by movies, games, and filming locations associated with Universal Studios.

Universal Studios Japan

Universal Studios Japan definitely has something for everyone. But with an array of attractions to explore, it may be hard to know where to go first. So, here’s a list of the best activities to add to your Universal Studios Japan must-do list based on your personality.

1. For the gaming fan: explore Super Nintendo World™

Universal Studios Japan - Super Nintendo World

As the newest area in Universal Studios Japan, Super Nintendo World™ is a must-visit for all game lovers. The area transports you to the Mushroom Kingdom of Super Mario with familiar elements and characters from this world-famous franchise.

With a Power-Up Band™ that you can purchase in carts and shops in Super Nintendo World, you can interact with various objects in the area and collect coins — making you feel like you’ve really jumped into the game. You can also experience what it feels like to be a Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge™ racer or just have a relaxing tour of the kingdom with Yoshi’s Adventure . Lastly, don’t forget to check out Kinopio’s Cafe™ for some treats and buy some souvenirs at the merchandise shop to complete your experience!

2. For the adrenaline junkie: go for a round at Jurassic Park - The Ride

Universal Studios Japan Jurrasic Park The Ride

Following the concept of its namesake film, Jurassic Park - The Ride takes you on an exciting boat ride along Jurassic Park. The relaxing trip takes a sharp turn when one of the park’s aggressive T-rexes escapes, leaving guests on a blood-pumping chase against the raging dinosaur. Aside from the realistic effects and animatronics guests will encounter during the ride, the boat also hits a thrilling 25.9-meter drop, marking the end of the ride and a successful escape from the dinosaur. Pro tip: There’s a big chance you’ll get splashed with a lot of water, so bring a raincoat or extra clothes!

If the rush of Jurassic Park - The Ride not enough to get your blood racing, hop aboard The Flying Dinosaur , where a Pteranodon takes you for an exhilarating ride through a steel-flying rollercoaster that goes through the entire Jurrasic World area in 360 degrees.

3. For the Potterhead: have a magical time at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™

Universal Studios Japan - Wizarding World Of Harry Potter

Pull out your wand, dress in your House colors, and unleash the Potterhead in you at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ .

Join Harry, Ron, and Hermione in Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™ — an immersive ride that will take you all around  Hogwarts. You can also explore the magical stores in Hogsmeade™ and grab your own interactive wand at Ollivanders™ wand shop. These interactive wands can actually cast spells around the village, letting you experience what it feels like to be a witch or wizard. Before you leave, don’t forget to have your fill of (non-alcoholic) Butterbeer like a true Hogwarts student.

4. For the pop-culture super fan: catch your favorite characters at the No Limit! Parade

Universal Studios Japan - No Limit! Parade

Get ready with your cameras, special Bubble Wand, and character headbands to celebrate your love for pop culture characters in the No Limit! Parade . The parade features crowd-favorites like Super Mario, Pikachu and other Pokemon, the Minions, Hello Kitty, Snoopy, and more. Bright, colorful floats and exciting performances are the highlights of this parade, with the parade music inviting you to move to the beat.

5. For the kids and kids-at-heart: playful mayhem at Minion Park

Universal Studios Japan - Despicable Me! Minions

Kids and kids-at-heart will love this Universal Studios Japan attraction that’s inspired by the playful and lovable Minions. Win a stuffed toy featuring Despicable Me! characters like Agnes at arcade games like Space Killer or Banana Cabana , where you need to collapse coins or flip bananas. Unleash your inner mastermind by competing against Minions and their schemes in Despicable Me : Minion Mayhem and Freeze Ray Sliders . Don’t forget to take home delicious treats and cute memorabilia featuring these chaotically cute creatures from the merchandise shops and stalls like POP-A-NANA and Sweet Surrender .

Upcoming Limited Time Events You Can’t Miss

Aside from the familiar attractions seen in other Universal Studios, Universal Studios Japan features seasonal themed attractions unique to Japan. Previous time-limited attractions included famous works such as Spy x Family , Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba , Attack On Titan , and Sailor Moon . Here are some of the themed attractions you can’t miss if you’re visiting Universal Studios Japan in the latter half of 2023:

  • Monster Hunter World: Iceborn XR Walk: January 21, 2022 - August 31, 2023
  • Jujutsu Kaisen: The Real 4-D: September 16, 2022 - November 2023

Tips to Make the Most Out of Your Universal Studios Japan Experience

Booking Tickets

  • Try to schedule your visit during regular weekdays instead of weekends and public holidays (like Golden Week) to avoid congested crowds.
  • For smoother entry, you can also reserve tickets in advance online at https://www.usjticketing.com/ .
  • Universal Express Passes can also be purchased beforehand to cut the waiting time in lines for certain attractions inside the park. Note that this pass requires separate payment from the Studio Pass (for entry to Universal Studios Japan). For more information, visit https://www.usj.co.jp/web/en/us/tickets/express-pass#howtouse .
  • For popular attractions like Super Nintendo World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™, area-timed entry tickets are occasionally required to avoid congestion. These tickets can be secured in designated areas inside the park and are free of charge. Area-timed entry tickets can also be secured through Universal Studio Japan’s official app.

Park Attraction Tips

  • Universal Studios Japan’s official app is a must-download! The app provides useful information on how timed-entry ticketing for certain attractions work; a live update of the estimated waiting time for each ride; detailed information about the attractions, shows, restaurants, and shops; the Universal Studios Japan park map, and more. For more information, click here .
  • Make sure to check the app or the website beforehand for the park’s show and parade schedules so you don’t miss them.
  • Some Universal Studios Japan rides tend to focus on solo experiences (i.e. Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, to name a few) so it’s advised to go for the Single Rider lines instead of the group lines to shorten your queue waiting time.
  • There are many unique food items available at Universal Studios Japan (mostly themed around your favorite characters) so it is best to dine in the park’s in-house restaurants and food stalls.
  • Wheelchairs and strollers may be rented within the park for a certain fee.

Universal Studios Japan Address: 2-1-33 Sakurajima, Konohana Ward, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture 554-0031  Access: From JR Umeda/Osaka Station take the Osaka Loop Line until Nishikujo station. At Nishikujo station, ride the JR Yumesaki Line until Universal City Station. From here, take a five-minute walk to Universal Studios Japan. Operating Hours: Please check the website for the park’s updated daily schedule. Official Website (English): https://www.usj.co.jp/web/en/us

Universal studios japan.

Universal Studios Japan (USJ) was the first theme park under the Universal Studios brand to be built in Asia. Opened in March 2001 in the Osaka Bay Area, the theme park occupies an area of 39 hectares and is the most visited amusement park in Japan after Tokyo Disney Resort. Universal Studios Japan currently has eight sections: Hollywood, New York, San Francisco, Jurassic Park, Waterworld, Amity Village, Universal Wonderland and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Visitors are able to enjoy many amusement rides, ranging from child- friendly carousels to thrilling roller coasters and simulators based on popular movies such as Spiderman, Back to the Future, Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park. Just outside the park's gates is Universal Citywalk Osaka, a shopping mall with multiple official Universal hotels and many restaurants and shops, including stores selling Universal Studios merchandise and Osaka souvenirs. Furthermore, the Osaka Takoyaki Museum, which is essentially a collection of several popular vendors of the local dish gathered under one roof, is located on the mall's fourth floor.

Book Your Flight

I use Google Flights & Momodo to find affordable flights. Another great way is to sign up for Scott’s Cheap Flights to get notifications of cheap fares, which happens often in Japan. You’ll sometimes stumble on cheap flights to Kansai International Airport.

Buy Your Shinkansen Tickets (Bullet Train)

Getting around Japan by the world-renowned bullet train, known as the Shinkansen, is incredibly fast, reliable, and affordable for visitors. You can travel from Tokyo to Osaka in just over 2 hours. Get the JR Rail Pass to save a ton of money on the bullet train for your trip.

Book Your Hotel

Universal Studios Japan has affordable accommodations that are steps away from the park and have easy access to Osaka. I recommend checking prices through Booking.com followed by the hotels directly. Sometimes you’re able to score some incredible deals. Here’s a short list of hotels at Universal Studios Japan I recommend.

  • The Park Front Hotel at Universal Studios Japan – You’re directly in front of the Park gates and have instant access to Universal CityWalk Osaka. The rooms are gorgeous, with restaurants and even a Lawson (Japanese convenience store).
  • The Singulari HOTEL & SKYSPA – Attached to the train station is a fantastic hotel for those who want a comfortable, clean, and stylish place to sleep. After a long day at Universal Studios Japan, the rooftop sento (public bath) is excellent for unwinding and relaxing.
  • Hotel Universal Port – This is an excellent hotel for the Minion fan in your family, only a 5-minute walk from Universal Studios Japan. It also boasts the largest breakfast buffet in Japan, a must during your visit.

Buy Your Tickets & Express Pass

In advance, save time and stress by buying your tickets and Express Pass for Universal Studios Japan .

Stay Connected

Universal Studios Japan only offers free Wi-Fi at the entrance to the Park. That’s not enough to stay connected and share your day with everyone back home to give them FOMO on Instagram . Here’s how you can stay connected while travelling in Japan.

  • Pocket Wi-Fi – If you’re travelling with a group or have multiple devices, this is your best and most affordable way to stay connected to the internet. Pick up and drop off at the airport. Easy.
  • Japan SIM Card – If you have an unlocked phone and need a Japanese phone number, this is the best and easiest way.

Get Yourself Travel Insurance

While travelling aboard, having travel insurance protects you against injury, cancellations, illness, and other things you can never predict. Whenever I travel, I always budget for travel insurance to protect myself. I’ve used it, and I’m so glad I had it. My recommended companies are SafteyWing and  World Nomads for travel insurance.

Final Notice: Universal to Finalize Permanent Closure Within Weeks

in Universal Orlando , Universal Studios , Universal Studios Japan

Jaws at the entrance to the ride at Universal Studios Japan

Universal is, once again, saying goodbye to Jaws forever.

Jaws at the entrance to the ride at Universal Studios Japan

If you love the Universal theme parks and grew up visiting Universal Orlando Resort, then you likely had the luck of being able to ride Jaws, based on the Steven Speilberg film of the same name.

Visitors boarded small tour boats that traveled through a lagoon, encountering various scenes and animatronics depicting the terror of a giant man-eating shark. The ride featured explosions, water effects, and even a dramatic finale where the shark would lunge out of the water toward the boat.

The attraction closed for several reasons. One significant factor was the maintenance and operational costs required to keep the aging animatronics and special effects functioning correctly. Additionally, the ride’s popularity had waned over the years, leading to decreased guest interest. Moreover, Universal Studios wanted to make room for new attractions with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter that would appeal to modern audiences. Now, in Diagon Alley, there are even some small Easter eggs for the extinct attraction.

Jaws Ride

As a result, Jaws closed permanently in 2012. There have been sightings of Florida Bruce in the past after the ride shut down, but he was not looking in too good a shape. The animatronics for Bruce have been found abandoned and decaying , which is a sad thought considering how iconic the ride once was at Universal Orlando Resort.

While Orlando lost Bruce, Universal Studios Hollywood’s Universal Tram Tour still takes guests to Amity Island, where the bloodthirsty shark pops up out of the water and terrorizes guests. For those who loved the ride, however, there is still a remaining Jaws attraction at Universal Studios Japan.

The ride in Japan is similar to what was once in Orlando, except in this case, it hasn’t been knocked down to make way for a Harry Potter expansion. Universal Japan also has a ride and a quick-service dining location called Amity Landing Restaurant, which serves food themed to Jaws .

There was also a gift shop, but now, it has been confirmed that the gift shop is closing permanently.

According to their website , Amity Island Gifts will close on May 6, 2024. The space will still be Jaws-themed, as it will be used for extra seating at Amity Landing Restaurant. The store has a lot of unique and location-specific Jaws merchandise. However, it will likely be relocated to one of the other gift shops at Universal Studios Japan.

Before this Jaws closure, we also shared that The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man has also shut down permanently. The licensing deal to use Spider-Man in Japan was coming to a close, so the theme park had no choice but to take down the ride. At the moment, we do not know what will take over the location; however, Universal Studios Japan (USJ) teamed up with The Pokémon Company back in 2021. However, this collaboration has so far been limited to character appearances and interactions within the park’s NO LIMIT! Parade.

This has fueled speculation among fans. Many believe a Pokémon-themed dark ride might be taking over the existing building once the Spider-Man attraction exits the park.

There will likely be some more Jaws presence at Universal Orlando Resort in the future, with a major announcement coming next Monday, April 29, 2024.

Universal teased what was to come in this “time capsule” style video, which hinted that there was going to be news surrounding E.T., Back to the Future, Jaws, Ghostbusters, Nickelodeon, as well as the new DreamWorks land.

Today, Universal shared the next hint while using the Shark Tank pitch trend that has been going on online. Bruce is the second character in the skit, further pushing the Jaws return narrative. TikTok highlighted that the new announcements would encompass not only the DreamWorks land opening date but also new shows, parades, the summer tribute store, and more, which will likely contain all the IP listed above.
