Keeping safari updated, how to update safari in system preferences.

It's a good practice to keep your web browser constantly updated for security reasons , but Apple Safari on Mac doesn't have an update button. Here's how to keep Safari updated.

Every year, Apple releases new features for Safari, and you usually install them without realizing it because they're linked to macOS updates that you get in System Preferences.

But because Safari is a browser, Apple often lets you update to the latest version of Safari without installing the next big OS release. For example, while Safari 14.0 came bundled in macOS Big Sur , macOS Catalina users can still update to it. Apple also provides regular security updates to older versions of Safari, which is the main reason why  we recommend that you keep it updated .

To update Safari, you'll have to use the Software Update feature in System Preferences. To get there, click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen.

In the menu that appears, choose the "System Preferences" option.

In System Preferences, click "Software Update."

The Software Update panel will show you whether there are any software updates available for your Mac. If there are, you have two choices.

If you want to install the latest operating system along with the latest version of Safari, just click the "Update Now" button and follow the process.

Related: Why You Should Update Your Web Browser

If you only want to install an update to Safari, click "More Info" under the list of available updates to see a detailed list of all updates.

After clicking "More info," a panel will appear listing the updates available for your Mac. Make sure that the "Safari" update is selected, and uncheck "macOS" if you don't want to install a system update along with it. When you're ready, click "Install Now."

After a while, the Safari update will be installed on your Mac.

Once the update process is finished, you can safely quit the System Preferences app using the red Close button in the corner of the window.

Since this process is somewhat confusing and non-obvious, we recommend enabling the auto-update feature to keep Safari and your Mac updated. Good luck!

How to update the Safari browser on your Mac

Tyler Lacoma

Apple has been consistent in updating Safari with new features in the past years, including performance enhancements and some whopping privacy upgrades . The MacOS Monterey update is also giving its browser a new look with Safari 15, a version that includes new web code support for more advanced pages, Passkey support for the iCloud Keychain, highlights to emphasize important information, and a whole lot more.

Step 1: Head to the App Store

Step 2: check your updates, step 3: update safari if available, step 4 (optional): add safari extensions.

If you don’t have automatic updates turned on or are delaying certain updates for your Mac, you may not be able to benefit from the latest features right away. The solution is to manually update Safari itself — and fortunately, it’s quite easy to take care of. Here’s how to do it.

Log into your Mac and go to the App store. You can easily open it by selecting the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the MacOS screen and then select App Store .

  • Don’t download the latest macOS Ventura update just yet
  • MacBook Pro 16 vs. MacBook Pro 14: The important differences

When the App Store first opens, look to the left-side menu. Toward the bottom, you should see a section called Updates . Navigate there to check on the status of available app updates.

The Updates section is divided into several parts depending on the status of your apps. There may be a Pending section for apps that are in queue to be updated but need authorization or more time to complete. There could be an Updates Available section for apps that have available updates that haven’t been started yet. And you may also see a Recently Updated section to check on updates that have been recently applied.

Look for Safari in the Pending or Updates Available sections. If you see it look for a blue Update button to the right of the app. If available, select this to begin your Safari update.

Troubleshooting note: If it looks like something is wrong with Safari, such as a pending update that can’t complete or a notice that says something like Unable to Update Safari , then you should try rebooting your Mac and updating again to see if this helps. If it does not work, you should check on your MacOS updates. If your version of MacOS has fallen behind the latest updates for Safari, it may not be available until you complete a more comprehensive upgrade.

Remember, you can typically use this full MacOS update method to update Safari at any time. However, since a MacOS update requires backing up your data and logging out of everything beforehand, it’s not always a feasible option if you’re in the middle of some long-term work. Updating Safari by itself may be a better option.

If you are excited about a new extension that has recently come to Safari, a standard update won’t include it — you’ll have to add it yourself. In the App Store, select the Categories option in the menu. In the list that appears, select Safari Extensions .

Here, you will be able to view the latest extensions and add them to Safari as you prefer. If you want some ideas, check out our list of the best browser extensions .

Reinstalling Safari

Keep in mind that you can choose to delete Safari entirely. If it looks like Safari has a bug or performance issue, deleting the app and reinstalling it is one method of getting everything up to date while fixing your issue. However, the only way to reinstall Safari this way is to reinstall MacOS altogether. You won’t lose any data, but it will take longer to do, so always be careful when deleting Safari.

A note about Safari on Windows

Yes, you can technically download Safari on Windows. However, since Safari 5, Apple has stopped working on this Windows version of the app, so no updates will be available for it. That also means that security and performance for the Windows version have fallen by the wayside, so we don’t suggest using this app at all.

Not everyone builds their home office around video calls. And if your home office also doubles as your bedroom, kitchen, or is tucked away in a cluttered corner of your basement, you'll be glad to know that Zoom lets you hide your surroundings from your co-workers. One way the software does this is by letting you change your Zoom background, allowing others in the chat to see you while swapping out your environment for something more professional.

Want to make use of the cool feature? In this guide, we'll go over how to change your Zoom background using both built-in images and custom images uploaded by the user. We also cover how to blur your Zoom background, in case you want something a bit more low-key, along with how to add filters for something more fun. Step 1: Access your Zoom settings

While DVD and Blu-ray dominate today's world, VHS tapes ruled supreme in the '80s and '90s. It wasn't uncommon for families to document birthday parties, holidays, sporting events, and other big moments in life with their handheld camcorder, recording the footage onto a trusty VHS tape. Unfortunately, playing those VHS tapes is challenging nowadays, as it's unlikely that you still have your old VHS player (or that it's even still in working condition).

That means you'll need to look into converting your VHS tapes to DVD, Blu-ray, or digital formats to take a trip down memory lane. Even if you're not interested in checking out the footage today, it makes sense to get the film converted – after all, those VHS tapes are slowly deteriorating, and if they go bad, all that footage will be forever lost.

Apple has just released a software update for the Vision Pro headset that launched just over a week ago -- and it’s an important one.

That’s because it offers a simpler way to reset your device if you forget the passcode that you created for it.

How To Update Safari On Your Mac: A Step-By-Step Guide

The buttons of the Apple internet browser app Safari

It's no secret that Safari is the go-to browser for many Mac users . Sure, other browsers like Google Chrome have their advantages , especially if you're deep into Google's ecosystem, but using third-party browsers other than Safari on your Mac has downsides. Safari is optimized for macOS and integrates seamlessly with your other Apple devices like your iPhone and iPad by using Handoff.

If you've been a part of the Apple ecosystem for a while now, you're probably aware of Handoff, a very convenient Apple feature that allows you to begin a task on one of your devices, and pick up where you left off on another device.

Safari is no exception — Handoff allows you to start reading or watching something on your iPhone or iPad, and pick up where you left off on your Mac. This not only saves you the time of looking for a webpage but also makes jumping from one task to another extremely simple. Like any application, keeping Safari up to date is extremely important. Not only do new Safari updates come with newer features, but Apple also frequently rolls out updates to address security threats.

Now that you know it is a good idea to install Safari updates whenever they're rolled out, the real question is: How do you update Safari? Strangely enough, if your Apple device is updated to macOS Ventura or later , the only way to update Safari is to update your Mac itself.

How to update macOS

While you can't update Safari without updating macOS, you can check which version of Safari you're currently using. To do so, open the Safari app on your Mac and click on Safari from the menu bar. Now, select About Safari from the dropdown menu. Once you do so, a dialogue box will appear. The version of Safari you're currently using should be mentioned below the "Safari" text.

If you'd like to update Safari, follow the steps below to update macOS:

Click the Apple menu in the menu bar and select System Settings from the dropdown menu.

Select General from the sidebar on the left.

Click Software Update and wait for a few seconds.

Now, if a new update is available, click Update Now next to Updates Available.

If a Safari-specific update is available, you can click More Info and select Safari from the "Updates are available for your Mac" section.

To avoid having to update macOS manually to update Safari, we recommend enabling automatic updates. This way, you won't miss out on new features and can rest easy, knowing that Apple has fixed any known security threats . To do so, click the info icon next to Automatic updates and toggle on the switch next to Download new updates when available, Install macOS updates, and Install Security Responses and system files.

Why Is Safari Not Updating on Your Mac?

If you’ve tried updating Safari on your Mac and encountered issues, several factors could be preventing the update. Let’s explore some common reasons for Safari failing to update on your Mac:

  • 🖥️ Outdated macOS : Safari is deeply integrated with macOS. If your operating system is outdated, it might not support the latest version of Safari. Ensure your macOS is up-to-date before attempting to update Safari.
  • 🌐 Internet Connection Issues : A stable internet connection is essential for downloading updates. Check if your Mac is connected to the internet and that the connection is stable.
  • 💾 Insufficient Storage : Updates often require free storage space. If your Mac is running low on space, it might not be able to download or install the update. Consider freeing up some storage.
  • 🚫 Server Issues : Sometimes, Apple’s servers might be overloaded or down, especially if a major update has just been released. If this is the case, try updating later.
  • 🛠️ Software Conflicts : Other software or utilities on your Mac might interfere with the update process. Consider disabling or uninstalling any recent apps or utilities and then try updating again.
  • 🔄 Automatic Updates Disabled : If you’ve disabled automatic updates, Safari might not update on its own. Check your settings to ensure automatic updates are enabled.
  • 🚧 Beta or Developer Versions : If you’re using a beta or developer version of Safari or macOS, you might face update issues. Consider switching to the stable release.

If you’ve checked all these factors and still can’t update Safari, it might be a good idea to contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for assistance.

The default browser for macOS, Safari is one of the most popular choices for its privacy. It has improved a lot over the years, including features like reading mode, storing passwords, and prevent websites from tracking you . However, to run the browser smoothly, it is essential to update it.

In comparison to other apps, updating the Safari browser on Mac is a little tricky. Read on to learn how to install the update and why you need to do it.

Why do I need to update Safari in macOS?

Safari doesn’t receive as frequent updates as other browsers. Moreover, Apple releases updates for Safari alongside major macOS releases. Therefore, they include several improvements, new features, and bug fixes.

Additionally, an older version of Safari may not be fully compatible with the latest macOS and could potentially become a slowpoke.

Keeping the Safari browser updated means access to the latest features and protection against new security threats.

How to update Safari in macOS Sonoma and Ventura

As mentioned earlier, the update for Safari is included with the overall macOS update.

  • Go to Apple menu → System Settings.

Go to General, select Software Update

Further, you can toggle on options in Automatic updates to automatically download Safari updates.

Turn on Automatic Safari update on Mac

Depending on the options you chose, you might have to install the update and restart your Mac to use the latest version of Safari.

How to update the Safari browser in macOS Mojave or later

  • Tap the Apple logo in the menu bar.

Go to the Apple Menu, select System Preferences

How to update Safari on Mac running macOS High Sierra or earlier

Unlike macOS Mojave or later, you don’t get the option to update Safari separately. Hence, you’ll have to install the macOS update to get the latest version of Safari.

  • Look for the App Store in the Dock, or search for it in Launchpad.
  • Click the Updates tab.

Check for macOS updates from App Store on Mac

  • If available, select Update now to download it.
  • Wait for the Mac to install it.

The latest version of Safari for Mac is 14.0.3, and it’s available on macOS Big Sur.

You can’t. Although an older version of Safari for Windows is available for download, you cannot update it as Apple stopped developing the browser for Windows back in 2012.

The latest version of Safari for Windows is version 5.1.7, which was released back in 2012. There has been no update since then. Many users claim that the best version of Safari for Windows is 5.0.

Sometimes, the browser may not work properly if the latest update hasn’t been installed. See if the update is available. You can also try to Force Quit the Safari browser and relaunch it to check if it works.

There you have it. Wasn’t that easy? If you have any further queries, share them in the comments section below.

How to Update Your Web Browser

Keep your online experience fast and secure.

' src=

Updating your browser to the most recent version gives you access to the newest features, but most importantly, it protects your computer from attacks. Most browsers update automatically by default, but if your browser is out of date for any reason, you can manually update it by doing the following:

  • Open your browser menu.
  • Find your browser’s About page and select it.
  • Click the update button.
  • Close your browser and relaunch it.

Most modern browsers follow similar steps, but there are some minor differences in the menus and buttons. To learn more about the how and why of updating your browser, read on as we go into specific details.

Why should I manually update?

Ideally, you probably don’t want to be doing updates manually. In general, it’s a good idea to set your browser to download and install updates automatically in order to keep it protected from any recently discovered vulnerabilities or exploits. There are, however, a few situations where you might want more control over when these updates are downloaded. For example, some satellite plans give you extra data during low-traffic hours that you can use for downloading software updates and other large files.

Users might also want to manually update their browser proactively. Some browsers make new updates available days or weeks before they roll them out as automatic updates. If you want to know about updates as soon as they become available, you should follow your preferred browser’s developer blog, such as the Chrome Dev Blog .

See our guide to the best web browsers to make sure you’re getting a better, faster, more secure experience while using the web.

In any case, find the method that works best for you to keep your browser as current as possible to avoid security threats online.

If any site you visit needs Internet Explorer, you can reload it with Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge.

Update Safari Step 1

  • Select System Preferences .

Update Safari Step 2

  • Click on Software Update .

Update Safari Step 3

  • Click Upgrade now to update your OS, including Safari, or select Automatically keep my Mac up to date to turn on automatic updates to keep it updated in the future.

Stay one step ahead of threats

Keeping your browser up to date is one of the easiest things you can do to stay safe online. Automatic updates are the best way to keep on top of new versions, but it’s good to keep an eye on updates and manually update if you have to.

Follow these steps to update any other third-party web browser on your iPhone or iPad:

  • Press the App Store icon and choose  Updates .
  • Pull down the Account screen to refresh it.
  • Tap  UPDATE  next to Google Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or another browser you use.

Like iPhone and iPad, Safari updates on Mac are handled by macOS updates. To ensure you have the latest version of Safari on your Mac, go to  System Preferences  and click  Software Update . From here, download and install any pending macOS update.

Tip: Sometimes, you might see a standalone update for Safari. For this, go to System Preferences  >  Software Update  and click  More Info .

Most popular browsers, including Chrome, update automatically in the background when you close the browser and open it again. However, if you haven’t done so in a while, you will see the word “ Update ” at the top right of your Chrome window. Simply click it, and you’re done.

Besides that, you can also follow these steps to ensure Chrome is updated on your Mac:

  • Open Chrome and press the  Command + comma (,)  keys.
  • Click  About Chrome  from the bottom left.
  • Select  Update Google Chrome .

Note:  If you don’t see the Update Google Chrome button, that means your browser is already up to date. In such cases, it will say “ Chrome is up to date ” and the version number.

This is how you can have the latest versions of web browsers on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Even if you use any other browser not mentioned in this post, the steps to update it should be almost identical.

Updating web browsers on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS

Third-party browsers on Mac do an excellent job and update themselves periodically in the background when you quit and reopen them. This ensures a safe browsing experience with little to no manual labor.

Similarly, if you enable auto app updates on your iPhone or iPad, your third-party browsers will stay up to date with all the new features and security updates.

However, the trouble starts with keeping Safari updated , as its updates are handled by updating the entire operating system – iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Compared to regular app updates, full software updates take a lot of time to download and install. Not to forget, your device is unusable when the update is being installed. Plus, some people who have limited or slow internet connection or little free space may not bother to update their operating systems as regularly.

Still, to ensure Safari is always up to date, you can enable a setting that automatically updates your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Here’s how:

  • iOS and iPadOS:  Go to Settings > General > Software Update >  Automatic Updates  and enable  Download iOS Updates . Next, turn on  Install iOS Updates .
  • macOS:  Go to System Preferences > Software Update and check the box for  Automatically keep my Mac up to date . Click  Advanced  to get more control over downloading and installing macOS updates.

I'm always curious about these Safari Tech Preview posts. Are they just a quick way to add another headline? I suspect so, as I don't see many people trusting these builds as their daily driver. I've tried that in the past, but it never stuck.

Update Apple’s Safari Browser in Windows

They make it so easy to do

Author avatar

Every web browser provides a different way of checking for updates, most of them fairly easy and found within the browser itself. Firefox allows you to easily check for updates through the Help menu.

Checking for updates in Firefox

Opera also provides an easy method of checking for updates using their Help menu.

Checking for updates in Opera

Even Google Chrome makes it easy by automatically downloading and installing updates. However, if you are using Apple’s Safari browser, how do you check for updates? The update mechanism for Safari is not found as an option in the browser.

When you installed Safari, Apple Software Update was also installed, and it provides an easy way to update Safari.

It’s worth noting that the last version Apple released for Windows was in 2012, so it’s really old!

There is no shortcut created for the Apple Software Update program, so navigate to the following directory containing the .exe file in Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\Apple Software Update

Double-click on the SoftwareUpdate.exe file.

Apple Software Update executable file

Apple Software Update starts checking for new software available.

Checking for new software dialog box

Once the check for new software is finished, the Apple Software Update dialog box displays. Updates to any Apple software you have installed is listed in the first list box. The program also informs you of any new software available that you don’t have installed in the second list box.

Select the software you want to update and/or install by selecting the appropriate check boxes. Once you have made your choices, click the Install button at the bottom, which also informs you how many items will be installed.

The License Agreement dialog box displays. Read through the license agreement and click Accept .

If the User Account Control dialog box displays, click Yes to continue.

NOTE: You may not see this dialog box, depending on your User Account Control settings. See our post, Windows – How to configure UAC (User Account Control) , for more information.

A dialog box displays showing the progress of the downloads.

Downloading the update

Once the downloads are finished, the updates and/or new software are installed.

Installing the update

When the installation is finished, a dialog box displays the status of the installation. Click OK to return to the Apple Software Update dialog box.

Software has been successfully installed

You can set the Apple Software Update program to automatically check for updates and notify you when updates are available. To do this, select Preferences from the Edit menu.

Opening Preferences

The Apple Software Update Preferences dialog box displays with the Schedule tab active. Select the radio button that corresponds with how often you want the program to check for updates.

Setting the update schedule

You can also check what updates have been installed by clicking the Installed Updates tab. The date, the name of the software, and the version to which it was updates is listed.

Click OK to close the Apple Software Update Preferences dialog box.

Checking list of Installed Updates

When you click OK on the Apple Software Update Preferences dialog box, the User Account Control dialog box may display again, depending on your settings (see the note earlier in this post). Click Yes to return to the Apple Software Update dialog box.

To close the Apple Software Update dialog box, click the Quit button at the bottom. You may also select Quit from the File menu.

You can easily check which version of Safari is installed. To view the current version of Safari, click the gear button in the upper, right corner of the Safari window, and select About Safari from the drop-down menu.

The currently installed version of Safari displays on the About dialog box. To close the About dialog box, click the X button in the upper, right corner.

What private browsing does in safari, how to use safari private browsing on iphone and ipad, how to use safari private browsing on a mac, how to disable safari private browsing on iphone and ipad, how to disable safari private browsing on a mac, key takeaways.

  • Private Browsing in Safari hides browsing history, autofill details, downloads, and locks tabs after inactivity.
  • Safari on Mac groups private and non-private tabs, while on iPhone it shows all tabs regardless of mode.
  • To use Private Browsing in Safari, identify it by a dark address bar, "Private" indicator, or "Private" next to the site URL.

Most browsers offer a private browsing mode that aims to keep the websites you view off the record. But what exactly does it do in Safari and how do you get the best out of it?

First and foremost, Private Browsing keeps the website pages you visit out of your History . The aim is to prevent someone else from seeing which pages you have visited if they have access to your phone or computer.

In Safari, Private Browsing does a lot more than just hide URLs. It also:

  • Prevents recent searches from showing up in your history.
  • Stops remembering details you enter in forms for autofill.
  • Keeps downloaded items from appearing in your Downloads list.
  • Locks private tabs after a period of inactivity.
  • Adds tracking and fingerprinting protection.

However, it’s important to note that Private Browsing does not stop you from being tracked altogether. Websites you visit will still be able to use various methods to track you, and will still have access to all data that you send them.

On macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, Safari groups private tabs together, and separates them from non-private tabs. On Mac, each Safari window is either private or non-private, and can have as many tabs as you want.

On iPhone, you can switch between private and non-private modes, each of which shows all tabs belonging to that mode.

You can spot when you’re viewing a private tab with these signs:

  • The address bar has a dark background. This may be less noticeable if you’re using Dark Mode .
  • On Mac, you’ll see a prominent Private indicator in the title bar.
  • On iPhone, you’ll see Private alongside the site URL at the bottom of your screen.

The steps to enter Private Browsing mode are nearly identical on an iPhone and iPad. The only difference is that the tab icon is at the bottom of the screen on iOS and the top on iPadOS.

  • Long-press the tab icon (two overlapping pages) on the bottom-right (iPhone) or top-right (iPad) of your screen.
  • Tap the New Private Tab menu item.
  • If locked, enter your passcode to unlock Private Browsing.

You can enter Private Browsing mode on macOS using either a menu item or a keyboard shortcut:

  • Open the File menu and choose New Private Window .
  • Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Cmd + n .
  • Use the browser as you normally would. Any tabs you open from this window will open in the same window, in private mode.

You may want to prevent users of an iPhone or iPad from using Private Browsing mode at all. To do so:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap on Screen Time .
  • Under RESTRICTIONS , click on Content & Privacy Restrictions .
  • If not already enabled, press the toggle next to Content & Privacy Restrictions to enable.
  • Tap Content Restrictions .
  • Change the Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

The option to enter private mode will now be gone.

On macOS, the wording of certain options differs slightly, but the overall process is near-identical to iOS:

  • Open System Settings via the Apple menu.
  • Click on Screen Time in the left panel.
  • Under the Restrictions section, click on Content & Privacy .
  • Click Content Restrictions .
  • Change the Access to Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

Private Browsing will now be unavailable in Safari, although any existing private windows will stay open.

Of course, anyone can re-enable Private Browsing using the same process, in reverse. However, you can use Screen Time’s Lock Screen Time Settings option to set a passcode and enforce the setting permanently.

Google issues ‘critical’ chrome update for all windows users.

If you are a Windows user with Chrome installed on your PC, then this latest warning will impact you—it’s critical you update your browser as soon as you can…

Another critical Chrome update has just been issued

Updated 04/29; originally published 04/26.

Another Chrome security update has just been issued, with the Stable channel updated to 124.0.6367.78/.79 . This release includes a critical fix to the underlying graphics engine of the type that has allowed attackers to execute code on target machines in the past—albeit no news yet as to any exploitation this time around.

The update also includes two high-severity memory fixes—the kind typically seen in such updates. Google has acknowledged that such memory vulnerabilities in its core engine are the most frequently discovered and exploited. As usual, there is no further information “until a majority of users are updated with a fix.”

Given that Google has designated the first fix—essentially a vulnerability to potential code manipulation—as critical, it seems highly likely it’s a credible threat. And once the fix becomes public, it’s important that users update as soon as they can—the clock is ticking for any exploitation.

The giant grey ghost lizard went extinct 100 years ago or did it, amazon prime video s best new show arrives with a perfect 100 critic score.

Usually, a critical fix might have been the biggest Chrome news of the week, but not this time. The other news is that the death of Chrome’s dreaded tracking cookies has been delayed once again—this time into early 2025, at least.

The issue is Google’s need to balance the privacy of its users with the seemingly fair treatment of its advertisers, especially when it essentially plays both gamekeeper (as owner of the browser) and poacher (as the world’s largest ad machine).

“We recognize that there are ongoing challenges related to reconciling divergent feedback from the industry, regulators and developers,” Google said in a post mid-week, “and will continue to engage closely with the entire ecosystem.”

That’s a critical update of an entirely different kind.

The update comes as Google’s ongoing engagement with the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) tries to carve a path through this messy situation. “We will not complete third-party cookie deprecation during the second half of Q4,” Google confirmed. “Assuming we can reach an agreement, we envision proceeding with third-party cookie deprecation starting early next year.”

Google is in something of a bind here, given its unique role in the industry. As web users become ever more privacy savvy, the gap between where Chrome is today and Apple’s Safari remains too wide. Chrome is an excellent browser, and its users rightly want to see it line up more closely with the alternatives.

Google seems to agree—notwithstanding its awkward Incognito Mode stumble—but it needs to find a compromise that doesn’t kill its ad model as well as those cookies.

Meanwhile, the bigger open question is around AI, of course, and just what this will mean for browser searching and advertising in the coming years. All told, by the time these cookies finally disappear, we may be in new territory anyway.

04/29 update: To be fair to Google, Chrome’s regular security updates—whether addressing vulnerabilities discovered by external researchers or by Google itself, front-end an ongoing program to improve the security of the world’s most popular browser.

As a recent example, the forthcoming Device Bound Session Credentials (DBSC) update should materially resolve the plague of session cookie theft, “by binding authentication sessions to the device... to disrupt the cookie theft industry since exfiltrating these cookies will no longer have any value.”

But these security advances are not always smooth running—and another such update, Chrome’s foray into post-quantum cryptography (PQC), seems to have hit a teething issue.

Put at its simplest, PQC aims to protect today’s data from tomorrow’s more advanced threats—the theory being that while today’s defenses are largely good enough, new quantum computing advances will likely break the best cryptography available today.

And while Google points out that “it’s believed that quantum computers that can break modern classical cryptography won’t arrive for 5, 10, possibly even 50 years from now,” the issue is the threat from “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later, in which data is collected and stored today and later decrypted once cryptanalysis improves.”

Google says that “the sooner we can update TLS to use quantum-resistant session keys, the sooner we can protect user network traffic against future quantum cryptanalysis,” and that “we are updating technical standards, testing and deploying new quantum-resistant algorithms, and working with the broader ecosystem to help ensure this effort is a success.”

But as Bleeping Computer reported over the weekend, “some Google Chrome users report having issues connecting to websites, servers, and firewalls after Chrome 124 was released last week with the new quantum-resistant X25519Kyber768 encapsulation mechanism enabled by default... The issue also affects security appliances, firewalls, networking middleware, and various network devices from multiple vendors (e.g., Fortinet, SonicWall, Palo Alto Networks, AWS).”

For now, “affected Google Chrome users can mitigate the issue by going to chrome://flags/#enable-tls13-kyber and disabling the TLS 1.3 hybridized Kyber support in Chrome,” but the option to disable PQC defenses will be removed once the technology is considered stable.

PQC hit the headlines earlier this year, with Apple’s announcement that it was updating iMessage to protect against the same threat. And while Apple presented this as a competitive advantage for iMessage over alternatives, the reality is that such technology is likely to become much more standard over the next few years.

But such tech is still fairly deep inside the rabbit hole, and you can expect many more unexpected issues as wider rollouts begin.

How this browser extension is friendlier on my budget and the environment

  • Beni is a free browser extension for Chrome & Safari making sustainable clothing shopping easier.
  • It matches current items with secondhand options from over 40 online stores for budget-friendly prices.
  • Beni works by adding the extension, then selecting items to find exact or similar thrifted options.

While I'm not writing about the newest, most fashionable earbuds and headphones , I spend a lot of time shopping for clothes online. Admittedly, I'm one of those people who claim I have nothing to wear whilst staring at a closet full of clothes.

Finding the Beni extension was the perfect compromise that made shopping sustainably for my favorite items even easier while performing some much-needed online resale therapy.

As a dedicated clothing shopper, however, I've never been one to discriminate against a good brand or good deal, even if the item was pre-owned. In fact, I do a lot of my shopping via online or physical thrift stores in an attempt to do some good for the environment, combating the fast-fashion industry, and protecting my wallet.

So, finding the Beni extension was the perfect compromise that made shopping sustainably for my favorite items even easier while performing some much-needed online retail therapy -- or rather, resale therapy.

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on-device intelligence to help prevent cross-site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your usernames, passkeys, passwords and credit card numbers, and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favourite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Designed for developers.

Deep WebKit integration between Mac hardware and macOS allows Safari to deliver the fastest performance and the longest battery life of any browser on the platform, while supporting modern web standards for rich experiences in the browser.
