Celebrity Moveup

Bid On A Stateroom Upgrade

You can upgrade your stateroom in a few simple clicks.

Welcome to Celebrity MoveUp - our new program that allows you to bid on a cruise stateroom upgrade after you purchase your cruise.*

*Eligible reservations on all Celebrity Cruise ships within 30 days of departure date. When entering your information below, please make sure to use the first / primary guest last name and valid booking number for your reservation to avoid errors.

Check if your Cruise is Eligible for Upgrade?

How can you upgrade it’s simple..

Browse through the stateroom options and put in an offer based on the amount you're willing to pay for an upgrade for each stateroom option. Making offers on multiple rooms will increase your chances of getting upgraded, but you'll only ever pay for one upgrade.

We'll notify you via email if your request for an upgrade has been approved. If your offer is accepted, you'll be automatically charged for the upgrade. If not, you pay nothing and enjoy the stateroom you’ve already booked.

Offers are priced per person, based on double occupancy, for the length of your cruise—only the first and second guest in your stateroom will be charged. Additional guests beyond the second guest are upgraded with no additional cost.

Is the offer amount per person per day or for the entire duration of the cruise?

The offer amount is per person for the entire duration of the cruise. Offers are based on two occupants per stateroom - only the first and second guest will be charged.

Does the upgrade include any additional promotions?

The upgrade does not include any additional promotions. However, you get to keep whichever promotions you already have.

What happens if I am part of a group or traveling with another reservation?

Each offer is considered individually, Celebrity Cruises cannot guarantee that all reservations traveling together will be upgraded. Under the circumstance that all reservations are upgraded, Celebrity Cruises cannot guarantee that all the upgraded cabins will be close together.

Can I reject the upgrade after it is accepted?

No, once your bid is accepted, your card will be charged immediately and the upgrade amount paid is final and non-refundable.

What happens with the promotions I already have?

You get to keep the promotions you already have. However, no additional promotions will be added to your reservation.

Can I choose the location or specific features of the upgrade cabin?

No, your cabin location and attributes will depend on availability. Celebrity cannot guarantee a specific cabin number assignment within the upgraded category.

How much do I pay if my reservation includes more than 2 guests?

If your reservation includes multiple guests (between 2 and 5 passengers), the offer amount submitted will be per guest but only for the first and second guest on the reservation.

Can I modify or cancel my offer after I submit it?

You may modify or cancel your offer up until 2 days prior to departure, provided that your offer has not already been accepted by Celebrity Cruises and provided your credit card has not been charged.

When will I know if my offer got accepted?

Your offer can be accepted anytime from the moment it is submitted up until 2 days prior to voyage departure.

If I have two reservations can I bid only once and if accepted, cancel the second reservation and move the guests into the upgraded cabin?

No, if you have two cabins you will need to submit two separate bids and they will be considered independently. Celebrity Cruises cannot guarantee that both reservations will be upgraded. In the case that one of the reservations gets upgraded, you cannot move the other guests into the upgraded cabin. All reservations cancelled within the penalty period will be subject to cancellation fees.

What happens if I am a single guest?

You will be charged based on double occupancy.

Why did I or someone I’m traveling with not receive an invite to bid on a stateroom upgrade?

To receive an email invitation to bid on a stateroom upgrade guest must be opted-in to Celebrity Marketing e-mails. To opt-in, to receive emails guests can sign up on our website, opt-in through the online check in process or within My Reservations section of website.

If I upgrade to a higher category stateroom, will I have to pay a gratuity amount based on the new upgraded category?

Yes, by upgrading to a higher stateroom category, each guest in the booking may be subject to a higher gratuity amount. The Offer Amount does not include the higher gratuity. If the Offer is accepted, the difference between the originl and upgraded stateroom gratuities (if applicable) will be automatically applied to all guests (the "Additional Charges").

Will I earn Captain’s Club points based on my upgraded category?

No, you will earn points based on the original category paid for.

Terms & Conditions

Celebrity Move UP℠ – Upgrade Program T&Cs The Celebrity Move UP℠ upgrade program provides booked guests with an opportunity to submit an offer (an “Offer”) to Celebrity to upgrade from the original Celebrity Cruises stateroom category purchased to a higher stateroom category (the “Program”). The Program applies to cruises, sail dates, and stateroom categories selected by Celebrity in its sole and absolute discretion. Not all cruises, stateroom categories, or bookings will be selected for participation, regardless of availability.

Eligibility Only a stateroom that has been purchased by either the guest or someone authorized to make an Offer on guest’s behalf is eligible for the Program (the “Guest”). If Celebrity selects a booking to participate in the Program, Celebrity will email an invitation to that booking to submit an Offer. Celebrity makes no representation to any person that an invitation to participate will be issued, an offer or upgrade will be reviewed, accepted, made available or processed, regardless of stateroom availability.

Valid Guest Email Required A valid email address must be associated with the booking. Celebrity will send an invitation to the most recently updated email address that is associated with the booking. An email address may have been provided to Celebrity at the time of booking or by any guest on the booking who uses the online “My Cruises” pre-cruise planner tool. Only the Guest named in the email invitation or someone over the age of 18 who is authorized to make an Offer on Guest’s behalf is eligible to submit an Offer. By submitting an Offer, Guest represents to Celebrity that he or she has the authority to act on behalf of and to bind the person or persons named or included on the Offer to these Terms and Conditions and those persons named in the booking.

Submitting an Offer Only one Offer may be submitted per eligible stateroom category. Guest may submit Offers for more than one stateroom category. Offers may be modified in accordance with the terms below. The amount of the Offer consists of the total per person amount that the Guest is willing to pay for the opportunity to upgrade from the original booked stateroom category to a higher stateroom category (the “Offer Amount”) and is separate and in addition to the amount paid for the original booking. The Offer Amount applies to only the first and second guests in the booking (in other words, the Offer Amount will not be charged to third and higher guests if the Offer is accepted). For single occupancy guest bookings, the Guest will be charged the double occupancy Offer Amount.By upgrading to a higher stateroom category, each guest in the booking may be subject to a higher gratuity amount. The Offer Amount does not include the higher gratuity. If the Offer is accepted, the difference between the original and upgraded stateroom gratuities (if applicable) will be automatically applied to all guests (the “Additional Charges”).Prior to submitting your Offer, the Offer Amount and any Additional Charges will be displayed (the “Total Amount”). If Celebrity accepts an Offer, the Guest who submitted the Offer will be obligated to pay the Total Amount. During the Offer submission, Guest must provide credit or debit card information (the “Credit Card”). If the Offer is accepted by Celebrity, the Total Amount will be charged to the Credit Card.

Acceptance and Rejection of an Offer

Celebrity reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to determine if an Offer is accepted or not, regardless of stateroom availability.  Celebrity may review and make a decision about an Offer at any time after the Offer is submitted, up to 48 hours before the cruise departure date. If Celebrity accepts the Offer, Guest will receive an email confirming the acceptance of the Offer and the details of the upgraded stateroom booking (the “Upgrade”). Celebrity will assign the location of the stateroom in its discretion. The Upgrade will have the same number of berths as the original stateroom. Immediately upon Celebrity’s acceptance of an Offer, the Total Amount will be charged to the Credit Card and becomes final and non-refundable. Refunds, credits, or changes may be issued only in the following circumstances: 1) Celebrity cancels the cruise, or 2) Celebrity cancels the cruise and re-books the guests onto another cruise in a stateroom class that is lower than the upgraded stateroom class. Any refund or credit will be limited to the Upgrade charge and credited back to the Credit Card in the same currency of the original charge; no other charges or fees of any type or nature will be refunded or credited.  If Celebrity does not accept the Offer, the original booking will continue and persons associated with the booking will travel in the original stateroom category. Celebrity will not offer and guests will not receive any compensation, consideration, or other benefit as a result of the Offer not being accepted.

Modifying or Cancelling the Offer

Guest may modify or cancel an Offer up to 48-hours prior to the cruise departure date, but only if the Offer has not been accepted by Celebrity and if the Credit Card has not been charged (the “Offer Period”). If Guest modifies or cancels the Offer during the Offer Period, the original Offer will be voided, and if applicable, replaced with Guest’s modified Offer. Voided or cancelled Offers will not be reviewed.

Modifying or Cancelling the Offer or Booking by Guest After Celebrity Accepts the Offer

If Celebrity has accepted the Offer, the Offer cannot be modified or cancelled, and Guest must pay the Total Amount regardless of whether Guest subsequently modifies or cancels the booking.  If Celebrity has accepted the Offer and Guest modifies or cancels the booking, the Upgrade and the Offer will be cancelled. Celebrity will have no obligation to invite the Guest to submit a new Offer on the modified or new booking or to apply the Upgrade to the modified or new booking or to issue a refund or credit of any kind.

Modifying the Booking by Celebrity

If Celebrity for whatever reason re-books the Guest or any person associated with the booking to another cruise departing on a date that is different from the original booking date, Celebrity, in its sole discretion, may transfer any Offer made in relation to the original booking to the new booking, subject to availability of the upgraded stateroom category.

General Terms

By submitting an Offer, Guest agrees to the terms and conditions of this Program. Offer to participate in the Program is non-transferable and applies only to the Guest and booking identified in the email invitation. Any promotions associated with the original booking will remain in effect. The Upgrade will not be eligible to receive any promotions or benefits that are applicable to the stateroom had it been originally booked at that stateroom category. Each offer is considered on an individual Offer basis, meaning that Celebrity may not invite or accept Offers of staterooms traveling together. If bookings that are traveling together are upgraded, Celebrity does not guarantee that the upgraded staterooms will be close together. The terms and conditions of your original cruise booking will remain in effect following the acceptance of an Offer or if an Offer is not accepted. This includes terms and conditions pertaining to cancellation, penalties, changes, the Captain’s Club program.  Accepted offers will earn Captain’s Club points at the original stateroom category purchased, and not the category of the upgraded stateroom. Upgrade does not include any additional promotions. If you purchase an Upgrade Celebrity Cruises cannot guarantee a specific cabin number assignment within the upgraded category. Your cabin number will depend on space availability.  Celebrity reserves the right to modify and change these Terms and Conditions in its sole discretion at any time without notice. These Terms and Conditions apply in conjunction with Celebrity’s cruise ticket contract, website terms of use, privacy policy, all of which are incorporated into and form a part of these Terms and Conditions. Celebrity reserves the right to cancel the Offer at any time, correct any errors, inaccuracies or omissions, and change or update fares, fees and surcharges at any time without prior notice. ©2020 Celebrity Cruises. The Ultimate Guide to Bidding for Upgrades on Your Cruise

Everyone likes the idea of getting a good deal on an upgraded cabin, and a lot of cruise lines now offer this opportunity through a bidding process.  There are a lot of mysteries about how this works and what the secret to winning an upgrade bid is, so we’re going to help clear this up.  We’ll explain the bidding process, share some reasons cruise lines like this system (and they’re not all the reasons you’ll expect), and tell you what to do and what not to do in order to maximize your chances of winning an upgrade on your next cruise.

the ultimate guide on bidding for cruise upgrades

Bidding for Cabin Upgrades: The Background

Not long ago the way to get an upgrade was to either call your travel agent or cruise line and ask for the price, or hope for some magical upgrade surprise.  This wasn’t ideal for cruise lines, because it meant that there was a chance they were leaving money on the table when people didn’t know to ask about upgrades.

A few years ago, however, most cruise lines switched to a bidding system.  In fact, most of them use the same system - a product called Premium Upgrade from a company called Plusgrade.  They provide the website (branded to look like the cruise line) and logic that ties into the cruise lines and helps drive this.  In fact, if you’ve ever bid for an upgrade on a flight, train ticket, or hotel room, you’ve probably used Plusgrade’s product before.

plusgrade logo on virgin voyages site

Which Cruise Lines Let Guests Bid for Upgrades?

Most, but not all of the big name cruise lines in North America offer this as an option now.  This includes Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, MSC, Princess, Virgin Voyages , and others.  One big name that’s missing?  Carnival.  Carnival Cruise Line actually has their own process where, weeks or days before a cruise, they email guests with a link to a special upgrade offer for them.  Guests can take it or leave it.

After you’ve booked a cruise, you may see references to upgrade programs on the website, in an email, or in the cruise line’s app.  While many cruise lines have their own names for this, such as Level Upgrade, MoveUp, or Royal Up, it’s all the same idea, and it’s all driven by Plusgrade.

How to Bid for Cabin Upgrades

Some time before your cruise you’ll have the opportunity to go onto a website and see a list of stateroom types that you can bid on.  There’s usually a short description of the room, some photographs, and a slider that lets you adjust your bid.  The minimum bid varies on the sailing, the room type, and what you’ve already paid (or your existing room type). Once you decide how much you’d like to bid, you put in your credit card or other payment information.  Prices are usually per stateroom - not per person (but check the fine print).

__alt__

Sometime before your cruise, maybe weeks, maybe just minutes, the cruise line will pick the winners.  They may not all happen at once, and you can usually go back to the website to check the status.  If your bid says ‘expired’ or something similar, then you didn’t get that upgrade.  If it’s ‘pending’ then there is a chance you could still win.  You can bid on as many types of rooms as are presented - they won’t let you win more than one type.  Also, you’ll only pay if you do win.  Usually, cruise lines email you if you’ve won a bid (some also notify you if you don’t), but many guests find they notice a credit card charge for their win even before they’re otherwise notified.

Mistakes When Bidding for Upgrades

Paying more than necessary.

Humans are kinda funny (I’ve yet to have AI write an article on CruiseHabit, you can tell by my typos).  We sometimes get so caught up in a process we forget there are better ways.  For example, I’ve seen guests bid more than they could pay for the room outright.  If you’ve paid $2000 for your inside cabin, and now you’re thinking of trying your luck at getting upgraded to a balcony room, think about what it’s worth to you, but make sure you can’t get it for less!  The cruise line or travel agent may have balcony rooms available for purchase.  If the prevailing rate is $2700, then you’ll just pay the $700 - no bidding needed!  Do keep in mind that anytime you adjust your rate, you’re actually adjusting your fare, so other parts of the promotion, such as how much onboard credit you get, may change.  A good travel agent can help you navigate these waters.  Read more about the importance of using a good travel agent.

__alt__

Letting the Excitement of a Bid Get to You

Auctions, even asynchronous ones like this, can be exciting.  Anytime something is gamified we can get so excited that we lose sight of the goal.  Don’t forget to stick with what you are comfortable spending.  You may think your bid is a longshot, but if you do get it, that money is being charged to your credit card right away, and there is no going back (you can’t get a refund and go back to your previously booked room). This also means not getting tricked by the gauges showing how likely your bid is to get accepted.  They serve absolutely no function beyond trying to get you to put out more money.

__alt__

Bidding for an Upgrade is Like Getting a Guarantee Room

Cruise lines often let you book a guarantee room, where you pay to get not a specific room, but a type of room - and you don’t get to choose the exact room number or location.  You can learn more about that in this video about cabin types .  One of the downsides of guarantees is also a downside to bidding for upgrades, in that, unless there is only one of the room type you’re bidding on, you could get ANY of those rooms, so if you’re worried about being next to a loud club, or too far forward or aft (which can be hard for those prone to motion discomfort), then bidding for a room may not be for you.

Common Misconceptions about Bidding for Cruise Cabin Upgrades

What’s included with your upgrade.

Generally, if you win a bid for a new room category, it’s just like you booked that room to begin with - you get all the benefits that come along with it.  There can be exceptions.  For example, on Celebrity, booking a suite generally comes with a premium beverage package.  If, however, you booked a standard stateroom and don’t have a drink package, or have only a classic drink package, you’ll not receive the deluxe package if you win an upgrade to a suite.  While this is somewhat of an exception, you should always check to be sure that anything you expect to get, beyond the room itself, is actually included in the price when bidding for an upgrade.

__alt__

Whoever Bids the Most Will Win the Stateroom Upgrade

This seems logical, but there are at least two reasons that it’s wrong (maybe more - we don’t always know all of the factors cruise lines may be considering).  First, if I paid $1000 for an inside room, and you paid $3000 for a balcony, it’s generally the case that these differences are taken into account when bidding.  If I bid $500 for a suite, but you, having paid three time what I did for the cruise fare, bid $400 for the same suite, you’re probably at an advantage - which makes sense, as you’d potentially get that suite for $3400, instead of my winning it for $1500.

__alt__

Another reason the highest bidder doesn’t always win is because no one has to win.  In fact, this comes up as a question frequently, when guests see that a sailing is sold out, or is out of a certain type of room, but then they’re able to bid for upgrades on that cruise, or for that sold out type of room on the cruise.  Is this a mistake?  Not at all!  Things happen, people cancel cruises at the last minute sometimes, and when that happens, the cruise line will want to put someone in that room, and they want that someone to pay for it, so they’ll take someone who bid the most (or who is willing to pay the highest net cost between their fare and their bid).  I’ve twice won bids for upgrades where just days before, the room type I bid on was completely sold out - and this is a common situation.  It also relates to why cruise lines love this bidding system…

How Cruise Lines Win When People Bid for Upgrades

Cruise lines are businesses, so of course, they’re happy to have guests offer money for nice rooms, where they then get to pick if they accept that money.  That, however, is just one step in the process for the cruise line.  Let’s say, for the sake of simplicity, that there is one guest in an inside room who bid for an ocean view, one in an ocean view who bid for a verandah, and one in a verandah who bid for a suite.  Should a suite become available, the verandah guest moves up, and now, a verandah is available.  That means they can then award the ocean view guest their bid to a verandah, and award the inside room guest their upgrade to the ocean view.  That’s pretty great for the cruise line - but it goes even further.

In the scenario above, there is now an empty inside room - and if you’re a cruise line trying to fill a ship with only a couple weeks or even days to go, you want a good lead price.  A lead price is the lowest price you can advertise for a cruise and that the cruise line is willing to accept at the time an ad runs. “Cruise the Caribbean for just $399!”  That’s a lead price.  If they can move guests up (while charging them money for it), and end up with a lower lead price (since the inside rooms would generally be the most affordable), that helps fill those final spaces on the ship.

Tips for Winning a Bid for Your Cruise

Let me start by telling you that none of these tips guarantee you’ll get upgraded - because as I mentioned previously, above all else, there has to be a room to be awarded.  If there is space, however, these tips may help you, as they’ve helped me.

Cruise lines can decide to award a bid at any time.  While often, they wait until the last minute, this isn’t always the case.  You can’t win if you don’t bid, so if the option is worth it to you, don’t delay.  Someone else may be the top bidder today and win a bid, simply because you hadn’t taken the two minutes to offer a bid yet.  So, as soon as you get an email telling you that you can bid, go for it.  In fact, some lines don't even make you wait, and there may be upgrade links available when you log into the website.  In the case of Virgin Voyages , you can go right to their upgrade page .

__alt__

You’re Most Likely to Win Bids for Balcony Rooms

On most modern cruise ships, 70-90% of rooms have verandahs, or balconies.  Because they’re by far the most abundant type of room, they’re also the most likely to free up - either because the cruise line didn’t sell them all as quickly as expected, or because someone cancels.  Think about it this way, if 850 out of 1000 cabins are balconies, and someone cancels, which type of room most likely just freed up?

Bid on Multiple Room Types You Like

This tip is especially true for suites, and relates to our tip above.  Let’s say I’m in a standard room on Scarlet Lady , and I’d like to stay in a suite.  Those Cheeky Corner Suites look cool (seriously, watch this tour! ), so I’m going to bid on one, and I see the option to bid on a “Cheeky Corner Suite - Even Bigger Terrace”.  Well, there are only two of those - so while possible, it’s not likely I’ll get one of them.  Keep looking and you might see you can bid on a “Cheeky Corner Suite- Biggest Terrace”, at the same time.  If those are neat, but just having any suite is really what’d be neat, then bid on a Seriously Suite, too - there are dozens of those, and thus, a better chance one may become available.  Bidding on all three of those types, if you’d be happy with them, greatly increases your chances of success.

__alt__

Don’t Bid a Round Number

This one is purely conjecture on my part, I’ll admit, but it’s easy, and seems logical.  Most of us have a budget, and I’m not saying to pay more than what it’s worth to you - but, well, maybe $5 or $10 more.  If two people bid on a suite, and they both paid $3000 for their current room, and they see the minimum bid for a suite is $750, maybe they’ll both bid that, or maybe they’ll think, “I’ll bid just more than the minimum - $800.”  A lot of people will stop at big round numbers like that.  Me, if I’m comfortable with $800, then I’ll be fine with $805 or $810, in hopes I might beat out someone with a similar budget, even though I’m not spending materially more.

__alt__

The Most Important Tip When Bidding

Remember, you paid a price for your cruise that was worth it to you.  Don’t let the hype of bidding, or the gamification make you lose sight of that.  I hate seeing folks upset they didn’t get an upgrade when, before they knew it was an option, they were perfectly happy with the room they initially booked!

You chose your vacation, and odds are, you’re going to have a pretty great time.  If you don’t win an upgrade bid, you’ll have a pretty great time for even less money than you were willing to part with.

Who doesn’t like getting more for less? For avid travelers, that’s especially true for travel upgrades.

Not that long ago, upgrades on cruises were a matter of loyalty and luck. However, an increasing number of cruise lines now offer guests the chance to bid on superior unsold cabins at a lower rate (much like how airlines auction off business and first-class seats at a discount). It’s a scheme that allows the cruise company to earn additional money (and free up some of the easier-to-sell lower-priced cabins) while giving travelers a chance to enjoy upgraded accommodations for a below-the-shelf price.

Here’s what you need to know about bidding for discounted cruise cabin upgrades.

How does the cruise upgrade bidding process work?

While the various cruise lines have different names for their bidding programs (like Level Upgrade, RoyalUp, and MoveUp), they all operate the same, as they’re all managed by a company called Plusgrade (the same bidding company that airlines use).

In the weeks and months leading up to a sailing (usually before the final payment deadline), cruise lines may send guests an email notification inviting them to bid for an upgrade. However, if they don’t receive an email, cruisers can go directly to the upgrade bidding page on the cruise line’s website and input their reservation number to get the ball rolling.

Upgraded cruise cabins may come with other added perks—for instance, if you book into the Retreat on Celebrity ships, the suites include access to a private restaurant, lounge, and sundeck.

Usually, the cruise line will have short descriptions and photos of the room upgrades available, and you can bid on as many categories of rooms as you want—don’t worry, you can only win once. From there, you’ll be asked to provide your credit card information. If your bid is accepted, the funds will automatically be withdrawn.

Once you’ve submitted your bid, keep an eye on your email for any updates from the cruise line. It might come right away, or it may not come until the day of departure. Most cruise lines allow you to modify or withdraw your bid within a specified timeframe before the bidding window closes (which varies by company), but you can’t change your mind after the bid has been accepted.

There’s usually a minimum bid the company will accept, so unfortunately you can’t offer five bucks and get an upgrade. Remember, bidding for an upgrade is essentially a gamble. While many passengers have successfully secured upgrades at a fraction of the retail price, there’s no guarantee that your bid will be accepted. If your bid is unsuccessful, you’ll still be accommodated in the cabin you originally booked.

How much does it cost to bid on a cruise upgrade?

There’s no magic number that will score you an upgrade—it all depends on what other people bid.

When placing your bid, consider factors such as the current availability of higher-tier cabins (the more available, the better your chances), the popularity of your sailing date, and the likelihood of other passengers bidding for upgrades. Typically, even bidding slightly more than the minimum can greatly increase your chances.

While you want to be competitive, avoid bidding more than the upgraded cabin is worth to you. It’s important to note that if you’re not careful, you could end up bidding more than the room originally sold for, so be sure to check the current price of that category before placing a bid.

Cruise lines that offer upgrade auctions

Most of the cruise companies that offer bid-to-upgrade programs are larger brands, including:

  • Royal Caribbean
  • Virgin Voyages

How to get a free or cheap cruise ship cabin upgrade

Fran Golden

A real score for cruise passengers is a free or cheap cabin upgrade. Just like with airline seats, you can't count on an upgrade — but it sure feels great when it happens. Several methods will help improve your chances of landing in better cruise ship accommodations.

Before I get into details, let's start with some facts: On a typical ship, the basic categories of cruise rooms are inside (no view), outside (with window or porthole), balcony, minisuite and suite. It's rare to get more than a one-category upgrade, so don't think you can book an inside cabin and wind up in a fancy suite. More common is that you might find an upgrade to a better inside cabin . Make sure you have realistic expectations.

Your best course is always to book the nicest cabin you can afford. Here are some tricks to scoring a free or discounted cruise ship cabin upgrade and landing better cruise rooms without breaking the bank.

Look for an upgrade sale

Cruise line sales are the easiest way to score cheap or free upgraded accommodations. Various mass-market brands will run periodic promotions, especially during the fall and winter "wave season" sale periods. You might also see discounted upgrades offered on cruises during shoulder seasons, such as immediately after children return to school in the fall.

upgrade my cruise

Free or discounted promotions encourage upgrades from inside cabins to ocean views and from ocean views to balconies. One tactic during these sales is to list outside and balcony cabins at the same price. If you can't find a deal on moving up a category, you might see a free upgrade to a bigger or better-located cabin within the category you originally planned to book. (Even within categories, the sizes and prices of cabins vary.)

Book a 'guarantee' cabin

When you book a cruise, you typically choose a cabin in your desired location. With a "guarantee" cabin , you leave it up to the cruise line to assign you accommodations either in the category you booked or a better one. The bet is that your category will sell out, and the cruise line will have to move you up for free — say, from an outside to a balcony cabin.

In the worst-case scenario, you end up in the category you booked; in the best case, you get your dream cabin. There is a catch, though. Since you still can't choose your specific cabin, you could end up in a noisy or otherwise undesirable area of the ship — even if the room is technically an upgrade from what you booked. For example, that great view you think you snagged may end up being blocked by lifeboats.

Join a loyalty program

Cruise lines naturally give upgrade preferences to frequent cruisers who are members of their loyalty programs . It's easy to join. In fact, you might be a member without even knowing it if your name was added to a cruise line's email and mailing list after your first cruise with the brand.

As a loyalty program member, look out for promotional deals you'll receive. Targeted emails and newsletters will alert you to members-only discounts or offers or inform you about upgrades before nonmembers get word. The cruise line might also send you invitations to bid for upgrades or offer discounted upgrades on cruises you've already booked.

Additionally, you can rack up points for perks that might eventually include free or discounted upgrades. For instance, if you reach the top Diamond status with Carnival Cruise Line's Very Important Fun Person loyalty program , you get a one-time free cabin upgrade.

Work with an experienced cruise travel agent

Travel agents, especially those who do a lot of business with a particular cruise line, have a certain amount of pull. Your agent might be able to snag you an upgrade by contacting the cruise line and asking for a favor. You might not know you have been upgraded until you get to the ship, as it will be based on whether or not cabins are available at the last minute.

Related: 5 reasons to turn down a cruise ship cabin upgrade

Your travel adviser can also steer you toward specific cruise lines or sailings where you stand a better chance of an upgrade. Also, your agency could have access to special group rates, meaning you'll pay a discounted price for that upgraded cabin you desire.

Bid for an upgrade

A few years ago, Norwegian Cruise Line , Royal Caribbean , Celebrity Cruises and MSC Cruises were among the cruise lines that took a page from international airlines (such as Qantas and Aer Lingus) and began offering bidding programs for upgrades. Luxury river cruise line Uniworld also offers bidding.

upgrade my cruise

These online programs are basically silent auctions that only select cruisers (preference is given to loyalty club members) are invited to join. The cruise line sets a minimum bid, and you can go up in price from there.

Your chance of an upgrade might be based on luck, skill or both. The advice from successful bidders is to go up from the minimum, but how much is a personal choice. Some people snag better accommodations for less than $20, some for $100 or more. You don't pay anything unless your bid is accepted.

Ask once on board

The hotel director on any cruise ship has a certain amount of discretion in moving guests to different cabins. Being bold enough to ask for an upgrade once you are on the ship could pay off.

To try your luck, you'll want to ask about an upgrade at guest services. Since the crew there will spend embarkation day fielding many questions and complaints from grumpy, travel-weary cruisers, your best bet may be to head to your assigned cabin. Then, wait until the second day of your cruise to ask for an upgrade.

Put on a big smile, be super friendly and ask if there is any chance a better cabin is available. If they don't offer you an upgrade for free, you might suggest you are willing to pay a small fee.

Mention your special occasion

If you're celebrating a special occasion — such as a birthday, anniversary or honeymoon — on board, the cruise line or your travel agent can find ways to fete you, including by upgrading your cabin.

When you book your cruise, note in your reservation (or remind your travel agent to note) that you're celebrating a special event in your life. Whether you are a loyal customer or a first-timer that the cruise line hopes will become a repeat cruiser, you might be rewarded with an upgrade.

This sort of upgrade would typically be a "surprise" that occurs when you check in at the pier, so you can't plan for it in advance. It never hurts to remind the staff how excited you are to be celebrating on the ship and ask if there is any chance for an upgrade.

10 Ways to Get a Cabin Upgrade on Your Next Cruise

upgrade my cruise

Choosing a cabin on a cruise ship can be a complicated task. Some ships have 20 or more categories, all with different prices, decks, and locations on the ship. When discussing cabin options, one frequent question travelers often ask of their travel agent or cruise representative is, "how do I get a free upgrade on a cabin?"

It's important to remember that there's no magic, secret, or guaranteed way to get an upgraded cabin. Like with hotels and airlines , it's often luck or being at the right place at the right time. However, there are a few things you can try to improve your chances of getting an upgrade.

Book the Cruise Early

Booking a cruise early will sometimes result in an upgrade. Cruise ships usually sell out the most expensive cabins and suites first, but the cheapest cabins come next. If you are one of the first to book a cheap cabin, you might get upgraded as the cruise date gets closer if demand is high for your cabin category.

Be a Frequent Cruiser

Like with airlines and hotels, cabin upgrades often go to members of the cruise line's frequent cruiser programs. If you are a frequent cruiser, you might also get free Internet access, free laundry, or other perks, depending on the number of days you have sailed with the cruise line.

Unfortunately, sometimes being a frequent cruiser can be a disadvantage. A cruise line might not upgrade someone who already loves sailing with them.

Be a First-Time Cruiser

Sometimes, a cruise line will upgrade either new experienced cruisers or first-time cruisers in order to get them "hooked" on cruising with their cruise line. There are two scenarios. Let's say you have always sailed with Cruise Line A, but decided to try Cruise Line B. The new cruise line might give you an upgraded cabin in order to encourage you to sail with them again.

The second scenario applies to first-time cruisers . A cruise line might upgrade someone who has never sailed on any cruise ship in order to improve their overall cruise experience.

Ask Your Travel Agent

Check with your travel agent at the time of booking and again throughout the time before your cruise. Some travel agencies purchase blocks of cabins, and your agent might upgrade you if a higher level cabin is left unsold. The travel agent might also know from past experience which cruise lines, cruise ships, and cruise itineraries are more likely to upgrade. It never hurts to ask!

Book a Guarantee Cabin

Booking a "guarantee" cabin means you are only reserving a particular category, not a specific cabin. The "guarantee" from the cruise line is that you will get either the category you have reserved or a higher one.

The disadvantage of a guarantee cabin is that you might not get either the specific area of the ship you prefer or even the specific deck. The advantage is that you will be more likely to get an upgrade than someone who has booked a specific cabin since the cruise line will not need to ask you before the upgrade.

Monitor Price on Cabin Before and After You Book

Just because you've booked your cruise does not mean you should quit checking the advertised prices as the time gets closer to your sailing date. Many cruise lines and travel agencies offer "low price guarantees" to encourage cruise travelers to book early. With a low price guarantee, you will get a refund or a shipboard credit if the price falls below what you paid. These extra funds could be used to upgrade if a higher level was available. For example, a family of four travelers once booked a 12-day cruise over a year in advance of sailing. When the price dropped $700 per person, they inquired of the travel agency and got a credit. That $2800 paid for all of the shore excursions and onboard expenses. What a pleasant surprise!

Inform Cruise Ship of Problems Early

Most cruises go smoothly and the passengers have a wonderful cruise vacation. However, sometimes stuff happens. If you have a problem with your cabin, inform the customer service staff on the ship immediately. If the problem can't be resolved quickly, you might get an upgrade or a credit on a future cruise.

Sail in Off-Season or to Less Popular Destinations

You are more likely to get an upgrade on a ship that is not full. If you plan your cruise vacation in the off-season or to a less popular destination, you will either get a great deal on the price and/or an upgrade to a higher cabin category. Savvy cruise travelers who love the onboard experience have long recognized the bargains in repositioning cruises  because they feature more sea days and fewer ports.

Look for a Cruise Ship With Relatively Few Inside Cabins

Since the cheapest cabins sell out the quickest, booking an inside cabin on a ship with only a few such cabins might result in an upgrade. Cruise ships like to sail full, and if demand is high for the lower grade cabins, passengers holding reservations for those cabins might get an upgrade. One caveat—don't count on this happening. Be prepared to sail in that small inside cabin.

Book a Sold-Out Cabin Category

This tip is the opposite of booking early. If you book a cabin in a sold-out category, you might be the one upgraded rather than the passenger who booked early. Sometimes, it's just a matter of luck.

Introduction

Embarking on a cruise vacation is an exciting experience filled with relaxation, exploration, and indulgence. After booking your cruise, you might start wondering if there’s a way to upgrade your room to enhance your onboard experience. Whether it’s a larger cabin with a balcony view or a suite with added amenities, a room upgrade can add a touch of luxury to your cruise vacation.

In this article, we will explore various strategies and tips on how to secure a room upgrade on a Carnival Cruise. From researching upgrade options to timing your request and building rapport with the staff, we will guide you through the process of increasing your chances of getting that coveted upgrade. So, buckle up and get ready to sail towards a better room onboard.

Before we delve into the details, it’s important to note that room upgrades are not guaranteed. Cruise lines often have limited availability, and upgrades are typically granted based on various factors, including availability, special occasions, loyalty programs, and more. However, with the right approach, preparation, and a bit of luck, you might just secure that desired upgrade for your upcoming Carnival Cruise.

Researching Room Upgrade Options

Before you embark on your Carnival Cruise, it’s essential to gather information about the different room options available. This will allow you to have a better understanding of the potential upgrades you can request.

Start by visiting the Carnival Cruise Line website or reaching out to a travel agent specializing in cruises. Familiarize yourself with the various cabin types offered on the ship you’ll be sailing on. Carnival offers a range of room categories, including interior cabins, ocean view cabins, balconies, and suites, each with different amenities and price points.

Take note of the specific perks and features of each room category that catch your interest. Consider factors such as the square footage, location on the ship, proximity to amenities, and additional perks like priority boarding and access to exclusive lounges. Having a clear understanding of the possibilities will help you make a more informed decision about the type of upgrade you want to aim for.

In addition to Carnival’s website, you can also find helpful information and tips on online cruise forums and communities. These platforms allow cruisers to share their experiences, including successful room upgrade stories and strategies.

Keep in mind that while researching room upgrade options, it’s important to have realistic expectations. Cabin availability can vary greatly based on the ship, sailing date, and demand. So, while it’s always worth aiming for an upgrade, it’s also wise to be prepared for the possibility of not getting one.

Armed with knowledge about the available room options and having realistic expectations, you’re now ready to move on to the next step: timing your request for a room upgrade on a Carnival Cruise.

Timing Your Request

Timing is crucial when it comes to requesting a room upgrade on a Carnival Cruise. Making your request at the right time can increase your chances of securing an upgrade.

One strategy is to make your room upgrade request as early as possible. When you initially book your cruise, inquire with the cruise line or your travel agent about the possibility of upgrading your room. By doing so, you’ll be among the first to be considered if any upgrades become available closer to the sailing date.

Another opportune time to request a room upgrade is during the final payment period. This is usually around 60 to 90 days before your cruise departure date. During this time, cruise lines evaluate the booked cabins and may have a better idea of availability. Contact Carnival Cruise or your travel agent to express your interest in an upgrade and inquire if any options are available.

It’s important to note that if you decide to wait until the day of embarkation to request a room upgrade, your chances may be limited. Cruise lines often finalize cabin assignments in the days leading up to the cruise, and most upgrades are processed beforehand. However, it doesn’t hurt to inquire at the check-in desk to see if any last-minute upgrades are available.

Remember, timing is not the only factor that determines whether or not you’ll get a room upgrade. Availability, special occasions, loyalty programs, and other factors also come into play, which we will discuss in the following sections.

Now that you understand the importance of timing your request, let’s explore how building rapport with the staff can make a difference in securing a room upgrade on a Carnival Cruise.

Building Rapport with the Staff

When it comes to requesting a room upgrade on a Carnival Cruise, building rapport with the staff can work in your favor. The staff onboard the ship have the power to make decisions regarding upgrades and can potentially advocate for you.

One way to build rapport with the staff is to be friendly and respectful from the moment you step onboard. Greet the crew members with a smile, engage in polite conversations, and show appreciation for their hard work. A positive and friendly attitude can go a long way in creating a favorable impression.

Another effective strategy is to get to know the staff by name and establish a connection with them throughout the cruise. Take the time to have conversations, ask questions, and show genuine interest in their role and experiences. Remembering their names and acknowledging their efforts can help create a positive relationship.

You can also consider leaving a small gratuity for the cabin stewards and waitstaff. While it’s not a guarantee for an upgrade, it showcases your appreciation and may be seen as a gesture that could potentially influence their decision-making process.

Participating in onboard activities and events can also provide opportunities to connect with the staff. Attend cocktail parties, social gatherings, and interactive activities, where you can interact with crew members on a more personal level. This can help establish a friendly relationship and potentially make them more inclined to assist with an upgrade request.

Building rapport with the staff is not a foolproof method to secure a room upgrade, as it ultimately depends on availability and other factors. However, it increases the chances of your request being considered and potentially adds a personal touch to the decision-making process.

Next, let’s explore how special occasions and celebrations can play a role in obtaining a room upgrade on a Carnival Cruise.

Special Occasions and Celebrations

Special occasions and celebrations can be a significant factor in securing a room upgrade on a Carnival Cruise. Whether it’s a honeymoon, anniversary, birthday, or any other milestone event, highlighting the special nature of your cruise can increase the likelihood of receiving an upgrade.

When booking your cruise, be sure to mention any special occasions or celebrations to the cruise line or your travel agent. They may note it in your reservation and make a note for the onboard staff to take into consideration. Additionally, some cruise lines offer special packages and amenities for those celebrating specific occasions, so be sure to inquire about any available options.

Once onboard, don’t forget to inform the guest services desk about your special occasion. They may be able to provide you with a complimentary upgrade or other perks to enhance your celebration.

Another valuable tip is to bring documentation or proof of your special occasion. For example, if you’re celebrating an anniversary, bring a copy of your wedding certificate or a photo of the two of you on your wedding day. This documentation can serve as evidence of your special occasion, making your request for an upgrade more compelling.

Keep in mind that while special occasions can increase your chances of securing an upgrade, it’s not guaranteed. Availability and other factors still influence the decision-making process. However, by highlighting the significance of your celebration, you may be one step closer to that coveted upgrade.

Now let’s explore how loyalty programs and previous cruises can factor into the room upgrade process on a Carnival Cruise.

Loyalty Programs and Previous Cruises

Loyalty programs and previous cruises can significantly impact the room upgrade process on a Carnival Cruise. Carnival offers a loyalty program called “VIFP” (Very Important Fun Person), which rewards loyal guests with various perks and benefits.

If you are a frequent Carnival cruiser and have reached a certain loyalty level, you may receive priority when it comes to room upgrades. Higher loyalty levels are often associated with a higher likelihood of being considered for an upgrade. Therefore, it’s important to enroll in the cruise line’s loyalty program and maintain your membership by consistently sailing with Carnival.

When booking your cruise, make sure to provide your loyalty program information or mention your past cruises with Carnival. This will help the cruise line identify your loyalty status and potentially prioritize your room upgrade request.

Additionally, if you have sailed with Carnival in the past and had positive experiences, be sure to mention it when making your upgrade request. Expressing your loyalty and satisfaction with previous cruises may demonstrate your value as a customer and increase your chances of receiving a room upgrade.

It’s important to note that loyalty programs and previous cruises do not guarantee a room upgrade. Availability, demand, and other factors still play a role in the decision-making process. However, by showcasing your loyalty and positive experiences with Carnival, you increase your chances of being considered for an upgrade.

Next, let’s explore the option of paying for an upgrade on a Carnival Cruise.

Paying for an Upgrade

If securing a complimentary room upgrade proves challenging or unavailable, another option to consider is paying for an upgrade on a Carnival Cruise. While this involves an additional cost, it allows you to choose a specific room category that suits your preferences and desires.

Carnival Cruise Line often offers upgrade options during the booking process or even after you’ve already made a reservation. These upgrades may include moving from an interior cabin to an ocean view or balcony cabin or upgrading to a suite with additional amenities and luxuries.

To explore paid upgrade options, visit the Carnival Cruise Line website or contact your travel agent. Take note of the available upgrades and their price differences. Consider your budget and the value you place on the enhanced features and benefits of the upgraded room category.

When considering a paid upgrade, it’s important to weigh the cost against the benefits and amenities you will receive. Assess if the additional space, view, or access to exclusive areas justifies the extra expense.

It’s also worth mentioning that paid upgrades are subject to availability, so it’s best to secure your desired upgrade as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Keep in mind that prices for upgrades can vary based on demand and sailing dates.

If you decide to proceed with a paid upgrade, follow the instructions provided by Carnival Cruise Line or your travel agent to make the necessary arrangements. Also, ensure you understand any terms and conditions associated with the upgrade, such as cancellation policies or potential restrictions.

While paying for an upgrade means an additional cost, it guarantees you the room category of your choice, allowing you to tailor your cruise experience to your liking.

Finally, let’s discuss the importance of following up on your room upgrade request.

Following Up on Your Request

After making your room upgrade request on a Carnival Cruise, it’s important to follow up to increase the chances of your request being considered. Following up shows your continued interest and enthusiasm, and it may remind the cruise line of your request.

One way to follow up is to reach out to the cruise line or your travel agent a few weeks before your sailing date. Politely inquire about the status of your request and ask if there have been any updates or availability changes regarding room upgrades.

If you receive a response that your upgrade request is still pending or there is no availability at the moment, don’t be discouraged. Politely express your continued interest and ask if there is a waitlist or any other opportunity to be considered for an upgrade closer to the sailing date.

It’s also a good idea to check the Carnival Cruise Line website periodically. Sometimes, last-minute upgrade opportunities may become available, and being proactive by monitoring the website can maximize your chances of securing a room upgrade.

During the check-in process on embarkation day, it’s worth mentioning your upgrade request to the staff at the check-in desk. While it may not result in an immediate upgrade, it can make them aware of your interest and potentially increase your chances if any last-minute cancellations or changes occur.

Ultimately, following up serves as a courteous reminder to the cruise line of your request and shows your enthusiasm for a room upgrade. While there are no guarantees, it’s always worth checking in and staying proactive to seize any potential opportunities that may arise.

Now that we’ve explored the strategies for requesting a room upgrade on a Carnival Cruise, let’s summarize what we’ve covered.

Securing a room upgrade on a Carnival Cruise can add an extra touch of luxury and enhance your onboard experience. While upgrades are not guaranteed, following the strategies outlined in this article can increase your chances of obtaining that coveted upgrade.

Start by researching room upgrade options to familiarize yourself with the various cabin categories and amenities available. Timing your request, whether it’s early in the booking process or during the final payment period, can also impact your success. Building rapport with the staff by being friendly and respectful, getting to know them by name, and participating in onboard activities can make a difference in the decision-making process.

Special occasions and celebrations can be influential in securing a room upgrade. Remember to mention them during the booking process and bring documentation as proof. Loyalty programs and previous cruises with Carnival can also play a role in increasing your chances of receiving an upgrade. Make sure to highlight your loyalty and positive experiences.

If complimentary upgrades are not available, consider the option of paying for an upgrade. Review the available choices, their cost, and the benefits they offer to determine if it aligns with your preferences and budget.

Finally, following up on your upgrade request shows continued interest and enthusiasm. Contact the cruise line or your travel agent to inquire about any updates or changes in availability. Stay proactive and check the Carnival Cruise Line website periodically for any last-minute upgrade opportunities.

Remember, while the pursuit of a room upgrade adds excitement to your journey, it’s important to approach the process with realistic expectations. Availability, demand, and other factors come into play, and upgrades cannot be guaranteed. However, by using the strategies outlined in this article, you’ll increase your chances of obtaining a room upgrade on your Carnival Cruise and creating unforgettable memories aboard your floating paradise.

4 Expensive Disney Cruise Options That Are Worth the Cost (and One That Isn’t)

T aking a Disney  cruise  lets you be the prince or princess of a Disney story. Everything from your meals to onboard entertainment is taken care of, leaving you free to explore everything the ship offers.

Find Out:  How To Get $340 Per Year in Cash Back on Things You Already Buy

Understanding  what’s included  in your package can help you decide where it might be worth splashing out a bit more cash for an even more enchanting experience.

While every Disney cruise comes with its share of pixie dust, some experiences are so spectacular they justify the extra investment. From princess makeovers to adult-only fine dining, prioritizing the right upgrades can elevate your cruise from memorable to once-in-a-lifetime.

Magical Makeovers at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique/Pirate’s League

The  Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique  offers an opportunity for your children to transform into their favorite characters, whether that’s a prince, princess or pirate. Since you likely chose a Disney cruise for the unique Disney experience or because you or your children are fans of a character or two, it makes sense to take part in this one-of-a-kind makeover option.

Princess makeovers range from $100 to $450, with the basic “Deluxe Carriage Package” including hairstyling, shimmering makeup and face gem, princess sash and cinch sack, nail polish, and t-shirt. Pricier packages also include princess gowns, accessories, tiaras, and more. To give your princess a special experience at a lower cost, you could pack a princess dress rather than paying for the more expensive package that includes one.

For those who would like to become knights or captains, you can select a package that includes a costume, sack or backpack, hairstyling and gel, confetti, and either a sword and shield or a captain’s hat and an autograph book. These packages cost $100 for the knight and $120 for the captain. Pirate makeovers are available on special Pirate Party nights.

Beer Mug or Drink of the Day Savings Package

Although Disney Cruise Line doesn’t offer an all-inclusive alcohol drink package, they do have alternatives that could be a good value if you plan to drink on your cruise. You can purchase a $17 souvenir glass beer mug that allows you to buy 21 oz of draught beer or hard cider for the price of a 16 oz beer or hard cider. This will pay for itself if you have more than around a half-dozen drinks, and you get a nifty keepsake that you can use on future cruises.

There is also an option to purchase a Drink of the Day cocktail souvenir cup that you may refill at a discounted price (and drinks of the day are already discounted). You can use these cups for drink discounts at Disney Castaway Cay as well, so don’t forget to pack your cup when you go ashore. Speaking of going ashore…

Port Adventures

A big part of cruising is going ashore during the port stops along the way. You may want to upgrade your trip by opting for  port adventure packages . These packages can include equipment rentals like bicycles, snorkels, and water tubes. They may also include cultural experiences, sightseeing, or even nature experiences like swimming with dolphins.

Booking your port adventures through Disney also offers the convenience of pre-set pricing, saving you the hassle of haggling or currency exchange. Not all the experiences are super expensive, and even splurging on a mid-range adventure will be a memorable upgrade to your cruise that reduces stress during port days.

Adult-Exclusive Dining

Every Disney Cruise ship offers dining options for adults only, so you can have a peaceful date night with your spouse while sailing. These dining options are only available for people 18 and older. The restaurant options include (depending on your ship) Palo, Palo Steakhouse, Remy, and Enchante.

After recent price increases in 2023, brunch and dinner at Palo and Palo Steakhouse will cost $50 per person for a fixed menu. Base dinner prices at Remy and Enchante are $135 per person. A la carte options are available for an 18% charge on top of the price of each item. While these meals are fairly pricey, especially considering other meals in the Dining Room are included in your ticket cost, you can’t put a dollar amount on an amazing adult-only date night.

Skip This Upgrade: Royal Court Royal Tea

One upgrade option you may have heard about is the Royal Court Royal Tea. While it’s a charming idea, especially for fans of Disney princesses, the cost is steep at $220 per child and $69 per adult.

While the description makes the Royal Tea sound charming, attendees have found it an expensive disappointment. Although it’s a popular add-on, popularity isn’t always synonymous with value. Besides, there is a completely free Princess Gathering where you can meet and greet your favorite Disney Princesses.

U.S. tourist faces 12 years in prison after taking ammunition to Turks and Caicos

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.
