Trailspace: Outdoor Gear Reviews

Vasque Talus Trek Mid UltraDry

rated 5 of 5 stars

Relatively light; comfortable from day one; good grip; waterproof.

  • Reasonably priced
  • Wearing well
  • None to date

My regular hike has a fair amount of talus, so these are appropriately named! With a 12yo and a 10yo as hiking companions, I'm not breaking any distance records. Nor am I—yet—on really challenging terrain. I think these would be fine in either scenario, though. They're certainly more than enough for Connecticut's mostly benign trails, even the aforementioned talus.

They show a few scrapes and other signs of wear, but I didn't buy them for Park Avenue. They fit well, with no real break-in needed, and have been comfortable and dry in thigh-high snow. They can get a little warm in the summer, but that's to be expected and it certainly wasn't unpleasant.

I had in mind to buy a heavier pair for more challenging routes once my kids are older. But I think these might suffice.

  • Comfortable fit
  • Feels broke in right out of the box
  • Have not discovered any cons yet

From day 1 the Vasque Talus Trek Mid UltraDry fit and felt like I had been wearing them and they were fitted to my feet. I have worn them on steep terrain with various conditions and have yet to have any problem with traction, even on loose gravel. The speed laces work well, but standard laces are also provided in case you don't like the speed laces.

Very well made and extremely comfortable right out of the box.

Vasque Talus AT UltraDry Review

View this post on Instagram Checkout our review of these Vasque TALUS AT ULTRADRY hiking boots below! These boots have accompanied me on almost every backpacking/hiking adventure for the past 3.5 years. They were originally bought at REI for a multi-day hike of the AT when I first started to get into hiking and backpacking. These boots feature a quality leather upper that conforms to your foot the more you hike in them, which allow for a much more comfortable fit than synthetic upper boots. They also feature Vasque’s ULTRADRY waterproofing technology which let’s these boots perform just as well as any other GoreTex boot on the market. (I have stood in a stream with water up to the top of the boot and have not had any water seep into the boot). The boots also feature an extremely durable Vibram sole, which after 3.5 years of hard hiking and backpacking, still seem to have lots of life left in them. The boot also breathes very well and is perfectly suited for fall and spring trips. These boots have also been worn extensively in the summer and winter, however I would recommend wearing a very thin wool sock for the summer months, and a thick wool sock for the winter months. This boot is recommended for anyone who wants a boot that can do it all and won’t break the bank. The main concern for most hikers and backpackers is finding a boot that is breathable, comfortable over many miles, is light and is waterproof, and the Vasque Talus AT ULTRADRY checks all of those boxes! Are there any specific features or technologies in the waterproofing of the vasque breeze iii and vasque talus trek ultradry that set them apart from each other.

The main difference between the waterproofing technologies used in the Vasque Talus Trek UltraDry and Vasque Breeze III hiking boots is the specific membranes used.

The Vasque Talus Trek UltraDry utilizes the UltraDry waterproofing technology , which consists of a waterproof membrane integrated into the construction of the boots. This membrane is designed to prevent water from penetrating the boots, making them fully waterproof. This technology is highly effective in keeping your feet dry even in heavy downpours or when standing in water.

On the other hand, the Vasque Breeze III features the Gore-Tex Extended Comfort Membrane . This membrane is also highly effective in keeping your feet dry in wet conditions. It provides excellent water resistance while still allowing for ventilation and breathability. The use of Gore-Tex in the boots ensures that they are not only waterproof but also breathable, thanks to the combination of a mesh and leather upper.

In terms of performance, both technologies are highly effective in keeping your feet dry in wet conditions. However, the specific membranes used may have slight differences in terms of breathability and overall comfort. The UltraDry membrane in the Vasque Talus Trek UltraDry boots may provide a more focused emphasis on waterproofing, while the Gore-Tex Extended Comfort Membrane in the Vasque Breeze III boots may offer a balance between waterproofing and breathability.

Ultimately, the choice between the Vasque Talus Trek UltraDry and Vasque Breeze III will depend on your specific needs and preferences. If you prioritize maximum waterproofing, the Vasque Talus Trek UltraDry may be the better option. If you value a balance between waterproofing and breathability, the Vasque Breeze III with its Gore-Tex Extended Comfort Membrane may be more suitable.

Breathability

The Vasque Breeze III hiking boot is better for breathability in warm temperatures or during intense physical activity. Its mesh vents and combination of materials allow for ample airflow and ventilation, keeping your feet cool and preventing overheating. This makes it a suitable choice for summer hikes or for those who tend to sweat a lot during outdoor activities.

On the other hand, the Vasque Talus Trek UltraDry hiking boot may be better for breathability in varying weather conditions. While it may not have the same level of airflow as the Breeze III, it has a mesh liner that helps wick away moisture and a leather upper with panels of breathable mesh fabric.

This allows for some air passage and promotes airflow, making it a good option for hikes in different weather conditions where moisture management is important.

In summary, if breathability is a top priority and you are hiking in warm temperatures or engaging in intense physical activity, the Vasque Breeze III is the better choice. However, if you need a hiking boot that offers some breathability while also providing moisture-wicking properties and versatility for varying weather conditions, the Vasque Talus Trek UltraDry would be a suitable option.

Breathability | Table of contents

How well do the materials used in each hiking boot allow air to circulate.

In terms of air circulation, the Vasque Breeze III seems to have an advantage over the Vasque Talus Trek UltraDry . The Breeze III features mesh vents that allow air to flow through, keeping your feet cool during hikes. This is mentioned in a product review on gearinstitute.

On the other hand, the Talus Trek UltraDry, being fully leather and waterproof, may not be as breathable according to a review on utahoutside.com . The waterproof feature of the Talus Trek UltraDry may hinder air circulation and result in sweaty feet, especially in warm temperatures.

If breathability is a crucial factor for you, the Vasque Breeze III may be a better option. However, it is important to consider that the lightweight mesh used in the Breeze III may be more susceptible to sharp sticks or thorns poking through, which could affect the overall durability of the boot.

It also has mesh panels in the leather uppers that provide support, breathability, and strength. Additionally, the Breeze III GTX model has ventilation ports in the head and toe areas to keep airflow moving along the footbed and prevent overheating.
