Jingle Bells has already been playing on the radio for a little while now and the smell of mulled wine is constantly in the air. If Europe is the place to head to for Christmas markets, then Paris is the crème de la crème. The name ‘City of Light’ really lives up to its name come Christmas time: enter the best of Christmas Markets in Paris !
Please note that ‘Christmas Market’ is known as a ‘Marché de Noël’ in French.
Things to know before visiting the Paris Christmas Markets
The city is decked out in all things Christmas to the extent that you half expect Santa to pop out from the interior of a Parisian café at any moment. Although there are multiple Christmas markets throughout the city, notably the one close to the Champs Élysées, while the largest Christmas market in all of Europe is situated at la Défense.
Situated at the end of metro line 1 (the yellow line), it’s just 20 minutes away from the Parisian city centre. The largest Christmas Market inside the Paris Peripherique itself is that of Jardin des Tuileries, in the 1st arrondissement of Paris.
For several years now, there’s been no market along the Champs Élysées due to a dispute between the organiser and the city of Paris.
Otherwise, it’s worth noting that other festive fun to be had in Paris includes checking out the window displays of the ‘Grands Magasins’ or going in search of some of the biggest and most decorated ‘Sapins de Noël’ ( Christmas Trees ) in the city.
While traditional Christmas Markets typically make you pay a deposit fee of €1 to rent a plastic cup (and more for a mug) for your vin chaud, none of the Christmas Markets in Paris that I’ve been to have required this. Though some stalls accept cards, it’s always good to bring some extra cash along, just in case!
Christmas Markets in 1st Arrondissement, Paris
Christmas market dates: Saturday 18th November – Sunday 7th January 2024
If you’re looking for a truly French Christmas Market experience, then the festive event at the Jardin des Tuileries is the perfect place to begin. Please just note that this is probably the busiest Christmas Market in Paris and you’ll definitely find yourself in large crowds if you visit during the weekends and evenings!
Situated in the 1st arrondissement and not far from the Louvre Museum, the Jardin des Tuileries Christmas Market event is held where the summer funfair is held during the warmer months of the year.
The largest market inside the Paris peripherique, in 2019 the 500 metre squared area hosts a selection of stalls selling everything from handcrafted goods to traditional Christmas market food (raclette, vin chaud, hot cider, and the like).
There’s also a wide selection of funfair rides, including a giant Ferris wheel where you can enjoy views of the Tuileries Gardens, and all the way to the Eiffel Tower. Most vendors at this Christmas Market accept card payments, though it’s always worth having a little bit of cash handy.
Christmas market dates: In 2023, there unfortunately doesn’t appear to be a Christmas market at Les Halles.
A smaller Christmas market is held at the largely underground complex of Les Halles shopping complex. Situated on the right bank of the River, the Bavarian-style chalets at this Christmas market number just a few dozen.
Visit the Canopée des Halles Christmas Market during opening hours and you can expect to find a wide array of gifts and souvenirs for sale, as well as several food stalls selling various winter-themed food.
Though the Canopée des Halles Market is a delight to pass through if you’re in the area (particularly considering the oversized Christmas tree in the middle of Les Halles), I would personally prioritise other Parisian Christmas over this one. Nearby, rue Montorgueil annually hosts some of the best Christmas illuminations that the city has to offer.
Christmas Markets in 4th arrondissement, Paris
Christmas market dates: Friday 1st – Saturday 30th December
Though one of the smaller events in the city, the Hôtel de Ville Christmas Village is organised by the City of Paris and is one of the more magical events in Le Marais district of the city. It’s one of my personal favourite events in Paris as there’s always free activities.
Featuring a multitude of carousels and Christmas trees, there are also a select handful of stalls selling products specifically made in Paris! Please note that while once upon a time there was an ice skating rink at Hôtel de Ville, this has since been replaced with the Christmas Village.
There aren’t a huge number of stalls at this Christmas Market stalls here, though the ones that do exist have a particular focus on artisanal goods. Every year there’s an annual free activity and this year is sledding and rock climbing.
I particularly recommend checking out this market at night time as it is incredibly gorgeous when bathed in the light of all of the illuminations.
Christmas Markets in the 5th arrondissement, Paris
Christmas market dates: Friday 8th – Monday 25th December
One of the prettiest public squares in Paris is that of Square René-Viviani. Situated in the Latin Quarter and not far away from the world-famous Shakespeare and Co English language bookshop, in 2019 this is where the annual Notre Dame Christmas Market is to be held.
Overlooking the grand ecclesiastical building itself (which sadly can’t currently be visited due to a terrible fire in April 2019 and is currently undergoing renovations) , around a dozen artists and creators’ stalls will be set up.
Selling everything from handcrafted jewellery to macarons, pretzels, and plenty of vin chaud, the festive event is widely regarded to be one of the best Christmas Markets in Paris.
Christmas Markets in the 6th arrondissement, Paris
Home to a handful of Bavarian style chalets and lying in the shadow of the illustrious Saint Michel Fountain, one of the more beautiful Christmas Markets in Paris is that which is held in Place Saint Michel , just a stone’s throw away from the River Seine.
Christmas market dates: Saturday 25th November – Sunday 31st December
Situated in the 6th arrondissement of the city and under the shadow of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés Abbey (i.e. the oldest church in Paris) , there’s no denying the magic of this smaller Parisian Christmas market, particularly come nightfall when the entire area is illuminated with thousands of twinkling lights.
In total, there are a few dozen Bavarian style chalet stalls selling all kinds of goods from eat-on-the-spot foodie products (think tartiflette, churros, crêpes, and vin chaud) , as well as a whole host of artisanal and luxurious gifts and handcrafted goods.
As of 2023, the stalls of this Christmas Market have been switched from white ones to traditional wooden chalets, thus making the market even more aesthetically pleasing. Read more: How to visit the Saint-Germain-des-Prés Christmas Market
Christmas Markets in the 7th arrondissement, Paris
Christmas market dates: To be confirmed, last year’s dates were November 19th 2022 – January 8th 2023
One of the most iconic Christmas markets in Paris is that held in the 7th arrondissement beneath the Eiffel Tower, i.e. La Tour Eiffel. Taking place right up until the beginning of January each year, this fun and festive event can be found along Quai Branley, in the shadow of the famous Parisian monument. Winter chalets can be found selling everything from traditional Christmas market foods to unique and unusual gifts.
Christmas Markets in the 10th arrondissement, Paris
Christmas Market dates: December 1st – December 17th 2023
Steps away from the entryway to Gare de l’Est train station, in the 10th arrondissement of Paris , the very first Alsace-themed Christmas market outside of the Alsace region has been held annually for well over thirty-five years.
Set underneath a covered marquee (making this the perfect rainy day Christmas Market), just over a dozen stalls sell all kinds of foodie related produce originating from Eastern France are present at the Gare de l’Est Christmas Market in Paris .
Included in this is Munster cheese, plenty of gingerbread, as well as a whole host of other sweet delights. Other highlights include plenty of stalls selling Alsatian wines and other liqueurs.
It’s worth noting that while there are plenty of foodie gifts for sale, there’s no hot food for sale, nor is there little by way of products to buy that aren’t food or drink!
Christmas Markets in the 14th arrondissement, Paris
Christmas market dates: To be confirmed, last year’s dates were December 3rd to December 5th 2022
One of the most charming and off-the-beaten Christmas Markets in Paris is that of Alésia-Leclerc, which is tucked away in the very heart of the city’s 14th arrondissement . Known as Marché de Noël Alésia-Leclerc, the event takes place over just one weekend, typically the first weekend of December.
Christmas Markets in the 18th arrondissement, Paris
Christmas market dates: November 25th – December 31st
One of the smallest Christmas Markets in Paris takes place on the Place des Abbesses, directly in front of the garden where the I Love You Wall is located. The annual event takes place from the end of November to the end of December and sees around 15 stalls erected around a central carousel.
As well as food stands, there are a number of wooden chalets selling ‘Made in France’ products such as jewellery and clothing. Discover more about the Abbesses Christmas Market here.
Christmas market dates: To be confirmed, last year’s dates were the weekends of the 26 and 27 November, 3 and 4 December, 10 and 11 December, 17 and 18 December 2022
Those who enjoy eco-friendly and sustainable Christmas Markets will be delighted to discover La REcyclerie, a festive event which takes place on the former railway tracks of La Petite Ceinture (an abandoned railway system that once looped its way around Paris) .
In the festive period, La REcyclerie offers a few different themed weekends where you can buy cool and quirky gifts and souvenirs. The first weekend is on the first weekend of December and will cover a themed event, the second weekend is a Japanese themed market, while the third weekend of December will see an eco-feminist event hosted at La REcyclerie.
Christmas Markets in Île de France (close to Paris)
Christmas market dates: Thursday 16th November – Wednesday 27th December
Cheers! Pick up a glass of mulled wine and portion of churros as the largest Christmas market in Europe and one of the best Christmas markets close to Paris. The la Défense Christmas market has everything.
From Canadian maple syrup goods to Hoverboard testing to small jewellery gifts, there’s no shortage of unique gift ideas. There’s even a Quebec themed chalet selling Canadian foodie stuff such as poutine and beavertails!
In fact, with over 300 traditional wooden chalets providing all manner of gifts, foods, and experiences, I can almost guarantee that you’ll find something to interest you!
And if you’re looking to experience some truly unique vin chaud or traditional Alsatian food while at the Market, there’s plenty of opportunities to eat at the market itself (including chic mulled wine and Cuban mulled wine)!
Christmas market dates: To be confirmed, last year’s dates were December 12th & December 19th 2022
Lying in the shadow of the illustrious Saint Denis Basilica, where many Kings of France are now interred, the Foires de Saint-Denis is a traditional Christmas Market. There are dozens of stalls selling unique and handmade gifts, as well as an ice skating rink.
Christmas market dates: Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th December
One of the most magical Christmas Markets in the Île de France region is that of the Provins Christmas Market. The town of Provins itself is one of the most magical towns close to Paris and is characterised by its timber-framed houses and medieval architecture.
Every December (typically on the second week of December), there is a Christmas Market held in the town. The Christmas Market is for only one weekend and, once there, you’ll discover a number of food and drink chalets, as well as stalls where you can purchase unique gifts and souvenirs.

When do these Markets typically close for the season? Are they open between Boxing Day and Epiphany?
Sophie Nadeau
Tuesday 16th of November 2021
Thank you for your message! In Paris, the Christmas Markets tend to run right through up until the first few days of January. Boxing Day is not a public holiday/ celebrated in France. Instead, most people celebrate Christmas on the 24th and 25th December (the main meal and present opening is usually on the evening of the 24th). I'll update this guide in the next few days with the 2021-2022 Christmas Market dates. :)

Eiffel Tower at Christmas: Everything To See and Do
Paris has long been referred to as both “the City of Love” and “the City of Light.” As a city that’s full of love and light, it may come as no surprise that a visit to Paris during the holiday season is as romantic as it is festive.
Its most iconic landmark, la Tour Eiffel (or the Eiffel Tower in English) is the ultimate place to visit during the winter months, especially around Christmas. So if you’re planning to visit Paris and the Eiffel Tower in winter, there are plenty of festive experiences you can enjoy during this most wonderful time of the year.
Christmas at the Eiffel Tower
The Iron Lady celebrates the Christmas season in the most spectacular way! While there’s something magical and awe-inspiring about seeing the tower at any time of year, it’s especially so around the holidays.
In winter, both the Eiffel Tower and its gardens turn into an enchanting winter wonderland filled with festivities, merriment, lights, and holiday spirit. And it’s something we should all experience at least once in our lives.
Here are a few of the Eiffel Tower festivities I recommend.
1. Eiffel Tower Christmas market
Set along the Champs de Mars, the Eiffel Tower Christmas market is a place where locals and tourists alike can peruse vendor stalls, sample treats at the food stands, and sip on hot mulled wine, all while in the presence of the Eiffel Tower. Visiting this festive Christmas Village is the epitome of a Parisian Christmas. It’s held from early until late December.
Guests at the Christmas market can also go ice skating and, most exciting of all, do so at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. If you happen to be here at night during the holidays, you can also enjoy a special, dazzling light show — but more on Christmas lights in Paris below.

2. garden of lights at the eiffel tower.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by La tour Eiffel (@toureiffelofficielle)
Make sure you set aside some time to stroll through the gardens around the Eiffel Tower . The trees will be aglow with lights that make the whole place look like a storybook, and it’s the perfect place for a wintry stroll.
If you need to warm up after your walk, head inside the cozy transparent dome you’ll find at the base of the tower. You can also order some snacks, sweets, and warm beverages at the terrace bar.
3. Santa at the Eiffel Tower
Santa Claus, Kris Kringle, Saint Nick — there are so many names for Santa. In France, he’s called Père Noël, which translates to Father Christmas. When you visit the Eiffel Tower during the holidays, don’t be surprised if you see this jolly old elf walking around.
You can take photos with Père Noël and let him know what present you want for Christmas. It’s a great memory for the whole family, especially the little ones.
4. A festive Eiffel Tower Guided Climb
An Eiffel Tower Guided Climb is the best way to get the most out of your experience at the city’s most enchanting landmark, especially during the holiday season. You’ll be led up to the first and second levels where you can enjoy the exhibits, visit the gift shop, and most importantly, learn all about the tower along the way from your expert guide.
If you choose to visit the Eiffel Tower summit , you’ll be treated to some of the best views of Paris. Just think of all the Christmas lights you’ll be able to view from the top as the City of Light sparkles even more over the holidays.
While the Eiffel Tower is a must-visit attraction in Paris, there are many other wonderful sites you should see around Christmastime.
Where to find Christmas lights in Paris
The City of Lights is the most decked out in lights during the holiday season. Everywhere you go, you’ll see spectacular displays illuminating the streets. As you stroll down the Champs-Élysées , for example, your eyes will be treated to the glow of over a million twinkling lights. You can catch the display along Paris’s most famous avenue between late November and early January.
From the Champs-Élysées, take a detour down Avenue Montaigne, which is also transformed with lights. While this Parisian street isn’t as colorful as the Champs-Élysées, you’ll still enjoy the elegant white lights all around you. It’s truly a special experience!
Be sure to head to the banks of the Seine for the one of the best views in Paris. Here, you can see the Eiffel Tower twinkling after sunset. You can catch the Eiffel Tower light show every hour from dusk until 11:45 p.m.
Looking for more to do in Paris for the holidays?
There are plenty of holiday activities around Paris beyond the lights and the Eiffel Tower. You can see a ballet, even though it may not be the “Nutcracker.” There are several Christmas concerts at cathedrals around Paris. And, of course, you’ll want to pick up something festive from a local pâtisserie — the bûche de Noël is the classic Christmas dessert in France, a large cake shaped like a Swiss roll and coated in hazelnutty chocolate.
But if you don’t have time to do everything, here are my top three things to do in Paris for Christmas besides the lights and the Eiffel Tower.
1. Shopping in Paris
If you enjoy shopping, then you will love shopping during the holiday season in Paris. Find a one-of-a-kind gift for that special someone (or yourself) at one of the many department stores, shops, or boutiques around the city.
Tip: If you’re looking for discounts, the word to keep an eye out for is “soldes,” which means “sales,” and is often posted outside stores in bold, large letters.
2. Christmas window displays
As you shop, don’t miss the cheerful window displays at department stores like Galeries Lafayette , the Printemps store on Boulevard Haussmann, and Bon Marché. The over-the-top Christmas windows are absolutely delightful.
Even if you’re not much of a shopper, it’s worth checking out the Paris window displays at Christmas — this is very much a “bucket list” holiday activity in Paris. Best of all, it’s free!
3. Christmas markets (Marchés de Noël) in Paris
No trip to Europe during the holiday season isn’t complete without a visit to a Christmas market, and that is especially true for Paris. Sip some mulled wine, get a few fresh roasted chestnuts (they’re really popular here), and browse among the many stalls. Each is festively decorated, and you’ll find unique items you won’t find anywhere else.
Don’t know where to start? Here are some of the best Christmas markets in Paris:
- Marché de Noël Paris Notre Dame
- Abbesses Christmas Market at Montmartre
- La Defense Christmas Market
- Tuileries Garden Christmas Market
- Christmas Market on Place de La Bastille
How to prepare for winter weather in Paris
While planning what to pack for your trip to Paris in the winter, you’ll want to bring plenty of layers as well as hats, gloves, boots, and a warm jacket. Additionally, consider packing an umbrella for any rainy winter days, or you may need to buy one here.
The average temperatures in Paris can range between 36 degrees Fahrenheit as a low and 46 degrees Fahrenheit as a high during the winter months. The chilly air can be a bit uncomfortable to walk in, especially on a windy or rainy day.
If you’re climbing the Eiffel Tower in winter (or taking the elevator up), remember that it’s colder the higher you go, and there’s wind up there, too. Please check the weather forecast, and bring a jacket to stay bundled up.
We have more tips for visiting the Eiffel Tower in winter — and in spring, summer, and fall — in our guide to visiting the Eiffel Tower in every season .
Is the Eiffel Tower at Christmas worth it? Yes!
Despite the possibilities of colder temperatures during your visit, Paris is one of the best cities to explore during the winter months, and spending the holidays here, with the Eiffel Tower glowing and chestnuts roasting, will be as festive and romantic as you could ever imagine.

La Défense Paris Christmas Market
Le Village de Noël

La Défense Christmas Market: Le Village de Noël - 2024
Despite being the biggest Christmas market in the Paris area and boasting arguably the tastiest and most extensive food options, the La Défense Village de Noël qualifies as a true "hidden gem," little known to most Paris visitors.
Why? This market's location in La Défense , the Paris business district filled with glittering high-rise office buildings about a mile beyond the Périphérique ring road, means you're not going to happen to stroll by it as you explore the city.
But getting there is fast and easy. Just hop on the Paris metro's Line 1 at the Charles de Gaulle/Etoile station by the Arc de Triomphe, and in 7-8 minutes later, get off at the La Défense station next to the district's Grande Arche - a modern (and much larger) version of the Arc.
Is the La Défense Christmas Market worth visiting, with so many other wonderful holiday markets located in central Paris? Absolutely! La Défense's Village de Noel, which dates back to 1995, typically welcomes about 1.5 million visitors during the holiday season.
Three things set this market apart: 1) seriously great shopping opportunities for a wide range of well-made, unique, and gift-worthy items, 2) delicious food, and 3) the stunning architecture of La Defense's surrounding skyscrapers, especially dazzling at night when their lights glitter like huge sparkly Christmas tree ornaments.
Not only will you discover wonderful artisan "Made in France" items as well as a vast selection of gifts not typically seen in other Paris Christmas markets, but you'll love the steaming plates of delicious Alsatian fare, Spanish-style paella, traditional French specialties .
Plus, you can enjoy La Defense's lovely holiday lights along its Esplanade, a wide pedestrian-only walkway stretching over half a mile (1k) between the Grande Arche and the Seine River.
So plan to spend more time here than you might expect!

What Should You Expect at the La Defense Christmas Market?
As you step off the "up" escalator from the La Défense metro station, you'll be on a broad plaza, with the enormous Grande Arche behind you and the Christmas Market straight ahead.
On your right is a large enclosed shopping mall, Les Quatre Temps, and on your left, the distinctive arch of CNIT (Centre of New Industries and Technologies) where you'll find another shopping mall with a Fnac electronics store, a huge Decathlon sporting goods store, a bunch of other shops, and a Hilton Hotel.
But for now, ignore them, and walk through the Christmas Market's entrance across from the metro station and the Grande Arche. There's a quick security check, but never much of a line or delay getting in. The market also has two other entrance/exits - one on the the opposite end of the market, and another on the side across from CNIT.
As soon as you're inside the "village," you'll see paths lined Swiss-style wooden chalets, smell the tempting aromas of Alsatian sausages, gingerbread , and other holiday favorites, and perhaps even enjoy a visit and photo op with Santa.
The La Defense Christmas Market has a new organizer who is bringing lots of energy and some exciting new entertainment to this year's event. Look for these traditional favorites and fun new additions:
- 150 Swiss-style chalets featuring creations by local, French, and international artisans and makers, as well as specialty food products and wine
- A large food court where you can get made-to-order casual food such as raclette (melted cheese on bread), crepes, waffles (gaufres) , and tartiflette (creamy cheesy potatoes, with optional ham), plus three restaurants with well-equipped kitchens for more substantial fare
- Five festive Christmas scenes, including a "Maison du Pere Noel" (Santa's House), staged to be the perfect background for your selfies
- A "Village Square" where well-known DJs entertain you with their holiday music mixes every Thursday evening (6pm - 7:45pm) and musical theme parties on Friday evenings (6pm - 9:45pm)
- Entertainment by performers on 10 afternoons: November 25, 26, 27, and December 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24
- Opportunities to meet and photograph yourself with Father Christmas (Santa) between 2:30pm-6:30pm on November 20, and December 3, 4, 7, 10, 11, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23
- Special events for children, including crafts, face painting, and story time
Festive Christmas Shows
What to do, eat, & drink at la defense's village de noël christmas market.
With 150 chalets overflowing with mostly high-quality artisan crafts and gift items, delicious food, mulled wine, and hot chocolate to sample, and festive decorations and entertainment, you can easily spend many hours soaking up the holiday ambiance here.
But keep in mind, La Defense offers even more: fantastic skyline views (and during some years, ice skating) from the top of the Grande Arche, an outdoor sculpture museum, even more shopping opportunities nearby, and lovely holiday decorations along the length of the Esplanade.
Here are 8 festive things to do during your visit to the La Defense Christmas Market:
1. Check Out the Artisan Creations at the Village de Noël
If you need only one compelling reason to come to the La Defense Christmas Market, it might be the high-quality artisan products on offer here (although the food could be a close second).
Perhaps because of the large number of chalets, you'll see special items here that you won't find at other Paris Christmas markets.
Behind the scenes, the market organizers give strong preference to artisanal, local, and original products during the vendor vetting and selection process, and even require disclosure of the origins of raw materials and sustainability criteria.
In addition to local and "Fabrique en France" (made in France) items, you'll see hand-made products from other Francophone countries in Sub-Saharan and North Africa, as well as other areas.
What's special at the La Defense Christmas Market? Check out these categories:
- Leather items such as wallets, bags, slippers, gloves, even book covers, often from Morocco, Spain, or Italy
- Jewelry made in France and other European countries
- Unique handmade ceramics, pottery, decorative glass
- Nativity scenes and figures, including hand-crafted sets in a variety of styles and colors
- Hand-knit wool sweaters, hats, gloves, and scarves
- Artisan soaps and perfumes
- Christmas ornaments and decorations
- Special regional foods such as holiday breads, cookies, candy, and nuts, wines, and liquors
Pro Tip #1: Prices on everything from gift items to food and beverages to be consumed on the spot tend to be lower at the La Defense Christmas Market than at some of the Paris Christmas markets
Pro Tip #2: If you plan to shop at the market, bring your own reusable bags if possible
Pro Tip #3: Most, if not all, of the vendors here accept Visa (and usually MasterCard) credit cards
Special Christmas Cruises
2. savor the tartiflette, raclette, crepes, hot mulled wine, & other tasty treats at the la defense christmas market food courts.
Although almost all of Paris's Christmas Markets include stalls serving some sort of ready-to-eat-food, the ones at the La Defense Christmas Market offer the best and most mouth-watering selections, almost all of it freshly made on the spot.
To sample cold-weather favorites, head straight to the market's Food Court, where each stall offers a different specialty.
You'll find steaming pans of tartiflette (a regional dish from Savoy made with potato chunks swathed in a creamy, cheesy sauce, sometimes with bits of smoked bacon, ham, or sausage), raclette (melted cheese) served on a baguette with optional chicken, ham, or sausage, aligòt (cheesy mashed potato dish popular in L'Auvergne), waffles (gaufres) and crepes with nutella or other delicious toppings, Spanish paella, Bavarian and Alsatian sausages, North African couscous with merguez, chicken, or lamb.
Just walking past the stands is a mouth-watering experience, thanks to all the delicious aromas.
Good luck with trying to limit yourself to just one serving!
And don't forget about the beverages. Head for the hot mulled wine (vin chaud), hot cider, and hot chocolate when you need to warm up, or sample the Champagne, local beer, and wine.
Coca Cola is also popular but it's regarded as a special treat in Paris because of the price. Don't be shocked when it costs more than the wine.
Sparkling Christmas Lights
3. visit the pop-up restaurants at la defense's village de noël.
Head to the pop-up restaurants at the La Defense Christmas Market to enjoy a meal featuring casual brasserie favorites: charcuterie or cheese platters, steak-frites, burgers, sausages, salads, mussels, and more.
Many offer crowd-pleasing regional specialties, such as the one in the above photo. It feature favorites from the Auvergne region: truffade aux lardons (potato/cheese pancakes with smoked bacon, cooked in duck or goose fat), entrecote au bleu (rib eye steaks with blue cheese from Auvergne), burgers with blue cheese, and saucisse au couteau (sausage made from pork and maybe 1-2 other meats chopped up by hand with a knife instead of by a machine).
As a bonus, the restaurants provide chairs and tables where you can sit while eating.
Pro tip: You won't find restrooms in the restaurants. Instead, they are located in the market's northeast corner - so if you enter through the gate closest to the Grande Arche, look for them on your left.
4. Enjoy Festive Decorations, Seasonal Music, Photo Ops, DJs, & Other Entertainment at the Village de Noel
As in previous years, you'll see plenty of Christmas decorations including Christmas trees, larger-than-life-sized Santas, and plastic reindeer, and hear holiday music playing fairly softly in the background.
But this year brings a number of new types of entertainment:
And if you're visiting the market with children, be sure to take them for a ride on La Defense's charming vintage carousel.
You'll find the carousel just past the CNIT building on the east side of the Christmas Market, near American artist Richard Calder's enormous "Red Spider" sculpture, one of La Defense's 69 artworks.
Find Christmas Market tours & other favorite Paris Christmas activities
5. Do More Shopping at the Adjacent Malls
Need to do more shopping for items not offered in the La Defense Christmas Market?
For clothing, home decor, gifts, books, jewelry, and much more, you might check out the 200 or so French and international stores and boutiques in Les 4 Temps shopping mall.
In the CNIT building on the other side of the Holiday Market, the enormous Fnac electronics store and huge Decathlon sporting goods store just about everything you might possibly want in their respective categories, plus you'll find a variety of other stores.
Of course, you'll also find most if not all of these stores in Paris, but perhaps not so conveniently located in one spot. So if you still have energy left after your stroll through the Christmas Market and don't mind lugging your purchases back to to Paris on the metro, go for it!
6. Stroll Along the La Defense Esplanade to See More Holiday Decorations
Once you leave the Christmas Market, head down the Esplanade in the opposite direction of the Arche (in other words, toward Paris) to see La Defense's magical display of holiday lights draped around the limbs of the bare trees. Find more places to see dazzling Paris holiday lights & decorations
Instead of being just one long path, the Esplanade features multiple paths surrounding gardens, art displays, and occasional reflecting pools. Each section features different decorations.
At intervals, you'll see much larger light displays which are often interactive. As you walk through or around them, motion detectors will trigger music, lights, or other special effects.
La Defense displays different decorations and illuminations (lights) each year, and like the holiday displays the windows of Paris's large department stores, highly anticipated by visitors.
As you walk along the Esplanade, you may also spot part of La Defense's collection of contemporary sculpture, some with brilliant lighting, such as the 49 brightly colored Signaux lights placed by sculptor Takis over a reflecting pool.
Once you reach The Takis light installation, you'll spot the Esplanade de La Defense metro station on the other side of the pool. If you're ready to head back to Paris, you can the metro from there.
Map Showing La Defense Christmas Market Location
As you can see in this map, La Defense's Village de Noel Christmas Market occupies a sizable portion of the Esplanade.

Getting to La Defense Christmas Market
- Location: La Defense
- Métro stations: Take the Metro's Line 1 to La Defense (by the Arche) or Esplanade de La Defense (at the end of the Esplanade near the Seine River). RER A also goes to La Defense but you must have an RER ticket or a weekly or monthly Navigo pass - a normal t+ ticket will not work and might cause you to be fined. If in doubt, just take the Metro.
3 Interesting Facts about La Defense
- La Defense is Paris's business district, deliberately constructed outside of the city's historical core but close enough to be part of the Paris metropolitan area; its first buildings opened in 1958 but most of the glitziest ones date back to the 1980s and later.
- La Defense is not actually a city. Instead, the district is composed of parts of three congruent cities: Nanterre, Courbevoie, and Puteaux.
- Although about 180,000 people work in La Defense (although not everyone has returned post-pandemic) and another 45,000 students attend classes in the district's 5 business and other schools, the district has only about 25,000 residents.
Best Places to Stay near La Defense Christmas Market
Choosing a hotel near the La Defense Christmas Market can be a smart move if you're on a budget because you'll often find significantly lower hotel rates (and somewhat larger rooms) than you will in Paris, especially when you're staying on the weekend when most of the district's business visitors have departed.
And with Paris only 8 minutes away on the Metro, you don't give up much in terms of convenience.
Here are a few hotels close to the Esplanade to consider:
- Hilton Paris La Defense - Located in the CNIT complex, across from La Grande Arche
- MGallery Nest Paris La Defense by Sofitel - 5-star hotel with a fitness room near the La Defense Esplanade and Les Quatre Temps shopping mall
- Melia Paris La Defense - Designer hotel near the Esplanade with panoramic Paris views including the Eiffel Tower from its 19th floor bar
