What to Watch out for

A lonely trail to the ruins of visapur.

  • Visapur Fort was built between 1713-1720 CE by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire. In 1818, Visapur was attacked and occupied. Considering the strategic importance of Visapur, both the north (Konkan) and the south (Deccan) gateways were blown up. Except for a few huts, nothing was left standing.

This trek begins in Bhaje village. Follow the mud trail out of the village. This is mostly a flat walk. The fort walls are clearly visible from the trail.

After 4 km, the trail splits. The one to the left goes to Visapur, and the one to the right leads to Lohagad. Take the trail to the left.  From here, the trail begins to ascend gradually. You'll notice arrows marking the path through the forest; follow these till you reach a hut. A stone placed here acts as a marker; it has the image of a horse painted in orange. Turn left here.

The trail through waterfalls (in monsoon) begins behind the green overgrowth at this turn. You will find water gushing down the stones as you trek up. In the summer, this part of the trail will have dry rocks. The trail here is shaded with tall trees.

Continue on this trail for 30–40 minutes, and you will reach the plateau on top. This is covered with lush greenery and moss in the monsoon and is barren in other months.

Explore the plateau to find small water tanks in caves and large water storage tanks, the flag, canon and bastion, Hanuman temple, various buildings ( wadas ), grinders used for construction, and other remains of the fort. Also catch views of Lohagad, Tikona, and Tung Forts, and the expressway. Walk on the inner edge of the fortification wall.

Descent is on the same path.

Patan village trail

Patan village is close to Lonavla. This route to reach Visapur is a little tricky. But for those who wish to do it on their own, keep certain landmarks in mind. First, when starting out from Patan village, keep the village to your left. You will see a number of trails here, so ask for help. Locals are approachable and will readily give directions.

This trail initially goes through a small forest and then comes to a dried up waterfall - if you are trekking post monsoon. Stick to this waterfall for the rest of the route. After 15-20 minutes, there is a bifurcation. The trail to the right goes to Visapur, and the one to the left goes to Lohgad. Take the one to the right.

After hiking for close to 40 minutes on this trail, you will come across a broken staircase. This staircase leads up to one of the entrances of the fort.

The total time you will take to reach the fort from Patan village should be 2 hours.

Apart from the view of lush green surrounding in the nearby region, Visapur also holds an outstanding view of Tikona Fort , Tung Fort, Lohagad Fort and the Pawna Lake. If you start your day early, you can easily cover both Lohagad and Visapur fort on the same day (3-4 hours trekking in total).

How to reach Visapur Fort base village from Mumbai/Pune

The cheapest and convenient way to reach the fort is via railways. The nearest railhead to Visapur Fort is Malavli station (approx. 5 kms) which is well connected to Mumbai, Lonavala, and Pune via local trains. From Malavli station shared auto/taxi are available for the base village of Visapur Fort. You can also opt to walk all the way as it would hardly take an hour to reach the base village. For train bookings visit IRCTC .

What I would suggest is to rent a bike from Pune/Mumbai/Lonavala (around 300 INR/per day). The road trip would add more fun to your entire journey.

Various trek routes for Visapur Fort

There are mainly 3 trekking routes to reach the top of Visapur Fort.

1)The Patan Village trail : Trickiest among the 3 routes, it generally takes about 2 hours to reach the top from this route. For the start, take help of the locals who will show you the correct trail. Remember, you must keep Patan village to your left. Once you come across a waterfall, stick to it for the rest of the route.

After 20 minutes you will reach a fork, take the right one for Visapur Fort as the left goes to the Lohagad fort. Also, you can take help of arrows marked in the stone at a few places. After hiking for about 30 minutes, you will come across a broken staircase which will lead you to the entrance of the fort. This route is most exciting as you walk on different terrains on the same trek.

2) The Bhaje Caves trail : Bhaje caves are situated on the midway of Malavli station and Visapur base village. After climbing a few steps of Bhaje caves, look towards your left where you will see a huge mango tree. Follow the trail and you will reach a small plateau where you will see 2 abandoned huts.

Now keep to the left-hand side of the hill as you climb up along the walls till you come across a small waterfall. From here a small trail will lead you to the start of stairs way, the route eventually meets the route from the Patan Village.

3)The Gaimukh Khind trail : This is probably the fastest way to reach the top of Visapur Fort (1 hour). On the route to Lohagad from Malavli, take a left once you reach Viraj Farms Lohgad (search on Gmaps). Continue walking for 10-15 minutes, once you reach a point where the road divides into two. Take the left trail; after walking for a few meters, you will see a board where it’s written Visapur Kade, take that trail. Now the trail is pretty straightforward passing through jungles and then the waterfall.

What I would suggest is to ascend from the Gaimukh Khind and descend from the Bhaje caves trail.

The difficulty level of Visapur Fort Trek

I would rate Visapur Fort trek as an easy to moderate level trek and would highly recommend it to beginners. It generally takes around  1 – 1.5 hours to reach the top depending on the route which you are choosing. Also, there are many shelters all along the trail, which will help to catch your breath. If you are doing the trek in monsoon, just be extra cautious as the route becomes little slippery.

My Journey to Visapur Fort from pune

It was my second visit to Visapur fort; I wanted to explore the other trekking routes to get to the top of the fort. I started from Pune around 6:00 am and took the village route to reach the base of the Visapur Fort.

The village route passes through Kolvan, Hadashi, Javan, Tikona Peth, and Lohagad. Riding all along the Pawna Lake with a view of Tung Fort in the background is a moment to cheer about.

After parking the bike at the base village, I headed for the Visapur Fort by taking the Gaimukh Khind trail. The fort was entirely covered under clouds, with water gushing out from the various points of the fort wall. It was raining heavily and owing to heavy fog, visibility was almost zero. As I knew the route, finding the correct trail wasn’t an issue for me at all.

After walking through little forest cover, I reached a point where the further trail ahead was all along the waterfall. It was very exciting to trek through the waterfall trail. At the top, it seemed that clouds were just walking along with me. Hurray!! The scenery of clouds surrounding the fort certainly needs to be captured on your camera.

If you are visiting a fort in the monsoon in Maharashtra, most probably you won’t be able to explore its surroundings owing to the prevalent foggy weather for the entire day. As I had already explored the fort on my previous visit, hence I was just interested to descend down taking the staircase way.

Foggy conditions at Visapur Fort trek top

I was a bit lost on the vast plateau of Visapur Fort and was unable to locate the staircase way owing to heavy fog. After wandering around for half an hour and using Gmaps, I finally made it the point from where I needed to descend. The water falling from the staircase was definitely a moment to capture.

Walking along the waterfall and passing through few lush green plateaus, I reached the staircase which leads to Bhaje caves. The caves are a group of 22 rock cut caves having a number of stupas.

Near to the last cave, there is a waterfall which falls in a small pond during monsoon season.  There is a little entrance fee of INR 10 for the Bhaje caves. You should not miss visiting this cave.

From Bhaje caves, a 10 minutes’ walk will take you to the Bhaje waterfall where you can take a bath to put an end to the exciting journey. If you have time and strength left, you can also trek to the top of Lohagad Fort as it would hardly take 2 more hours in total. I had already explored Lohagad thrice, so was not at all interested to trek again. For the return, I took the Old Mumbai Pune highway.

The top of the fort is a vast green plateau and you can walk along the perimeter and enjoy the breathtaking view of the surroundings including Tikona Fort, Tung Fort, Lohagad Fort and the Pawna Lake. There are few water storage cisterns, temples of Hanuman, a decorated arch and old house also at the top which you can explore.

Food and stay options at Visapur Fort

Generally, no one stays overnight due to lack of proper accommodation options. Also, the fort can be visited on a day trip from Pune/Mumbai. But if you are planning to stay, there is a village at the base of Visapur – Lohagad where you will find few stay options. Viraj Farms at the start point of trek do have accommodation options available.

Also you can set up you tent at the top. The tent that I carry during the treks is Quechua Arpenaz 2 Tent . It has enough space for 2 people.

Best time to visit Visapur Fort

Undoubtedly, the monsoon months of July to September is the best time to trek to the Visapur Fort as the surroundings are lush green and there are many waterfalls all along the way. Though one needs to be little extra cautious as trails become little slippery during monsoon. If you want to explore the top of the fort and the surrounding regions, October to February would be an ideal time to have a visit to the fort.

VISAPUR FORT, VISAPUR TREK

Visapur fort is a hill fort located near Lonavala and is just a kilometre away from Lohgad. The height of the fort from sea level is 3,556 feet. Visapur is larger than it's twin fort Lohgad. If you like going for small treks, then a trek to Visapur is highly recommended. Please check below for more information about the fort and the trekking involved in getting to the top.

Located just besides Lohgad. A must visit even if you are just planning to visit Lohgad.

How would you rate this place on a scale of 1-5? Vote Below!

  • Winter Treks near Pune
  • Night Treks Near Pune

What to see on the fort:  Within the fort are caves, cisterns of water. These look super cool during the rainy season.

  • Hanuman Carving: There is a huge Hanuman carving on the fort which is a popular sightseeing spot. In addition to the carving, there are also a few temples dedicated to Hanuman.
  • Well on the fort: The locals say that the well is very old and was built by the Pandavas.
  • Iron Gun: There's a cannon gun on the fort which seems to be from the British Era.
  • Walls of the Fort: The walls of Visapur are still intact and give us an insight of the construction during the 16th century.

Route Information : If you start from pune on the old Pune Mumbai highway (NH4) take a left turn when you reach kamshet from the highway to pavanagar village.  Ask the locals if you are confused when to take that left turn, the same road will lead you to Lohgad fort base. Along the way you have awesome view of pavana dam and its backwaters. The road is not bad…..but could be difficult and dangerous in monsoon. There's a paid parking at Lohgad base where you can park your vehicles. From here, the base of Visapur is just 10mins away.

Difficulty Level and Other useful tips:  Difficulty level is Medium. It will take approximately 1 hour to reach to the top. For an experienced trekker it should take just 30 mins. During the dry season, the trek is considerably easy and safe. However, one needs to be careful during the rainy season as the trek gets kind of slippery.

Camping and Food : Visapur is not ideal for camping. There are no proper shelters where you can stay. It's particularly difficult during the monsoon season.

For food, there are plenty of stalls at the base of Lohgad from where you can buy Pakodas or traditional Indian snacks. These small stores also keep water bottles, chips, biscuits and other eatables.

Where is Visapur Fort located?

Visapur Fort is situated near Lonavala, a popular hill station in the Pune district of Maharashtra, India.

  • How long does it take to trek to Visapur Fort?

The trek to Visapur Fort typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the starting point and the trekker's pace. The trail is moderately challenging, with steep ascents and rocky terrain.

Visapur Fort History

Visapur Fort was established between 1713 - 1720 CE by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire. It was built following the construction of Lohagad Fort, with the histories of the two forts intertwined. In 1818, the British East India Company made strategic efforts to capture Lohagad, a stronghold where the famed treasury of the Maratha Kingdom was kept. This led to the overwhelming of Visapur Fort by British forces on March 4, 1818.

Utilizing its elevated position and proximity to Lohagad, the British stationed cannons on Visapur to bombard Lohagad, compelling the Marathas to retreat. Despite its significance, Visapur Fort underwent substantial destruction under British control. The Deccan and North Konkan gateways were demolished, and many principal buildings were razed.

In contrast, Lohagad Fort, with its well-preserved Maratha architecture, remains largely intact, boasting intricately carved gates that stand as a testament to the region's rich history and craftsmanship.

Nestled amidst the lush Sahyadri mountains of Maharashtra, Visapur Fort stands as a testament to history and adventure. With its rugged terrain and panoramic views, it beckons travelers seeking a unique blend of trekking, camping, and exploration. Recently, I embarked on a memorable journey to Visapur Fort, embarking on an exhilarating night trek, followed by a peaceful camping experience under the starlit sky.

Our adventure commenced with a train journey from Mumbai to Lonavala, a scenic route that set the tone for the adventure ahead. As we arrived at Lonavala station, anticipation filled the air, fueled by the stories of the majestic Visapur Fort awaiting us.

Under the blanket of darkness, we set off on our trek to Visapur Fort, guided only by the light of our torches and the camaraderie of fellow trekkers. The trail was steep and challenging, yet every step was rewarded with glimpses of the surrounding wilderness bathed in moonlight.

As we ascended higher, the fort's silhouette emerged against the night sky, a hauntingly beautiful sight that spurred us onward. Guided by our experienced trek leaders, we navigated through rocky paths and dense foliage, each twist and turn adding to the thrill of the adventure.

Upon reaching the summit, we were greeted by the ancient ruins of Visapur Fort, standing as silent witnesses to centuries of history. Our campsite was nestled within the fort's walls, offering a surreal setting for a night of tranquility and camaraderie.

After setting up our tents, we gathered around the crackling bonfire, its warmth casting a cozy glow over the rugged terrain. As we shared stories and laughter under the star-studded sky, the fort seemed to come alive with echoes of the past, enveloping us in its timeless embrace.

The night was young, and our spirits soared as we indulged in a myriad of fun games and activities. From impromptu talent shows to friendly competitions, every moment was infused with joy and laughter, forging bonds that would last a lifetime.

As the night wore on, we retired to our tents, lulled to sleep by the gentle rustle of the wind and the distant chirping of crickets. In the embrace of nature, surrounded by the echoes of history, we found solace and serenity, a testament to the transformative power of adventure.

The journey to Visapur Fort was more than a mere trek; it was a voyage of discovery, where the past met the present in a harmonious dance of adventure and introspection. From the thrill of the night trek to the tranquility of camping amidst ancient ruins, every moment was a testament to the beauty of exploration and the richness of human connection. As we bid farewell to Visapur Fort, our hearts were filled with gratitude for the memories made and the friendships forged, carrying with us the spirit of adventure into the dawn of a new day.

This fort was not much accessed and hence till today it has some remains of the ancient architecture and Peshwa empire ruins that attract history buffs every year.

Things to do at Visapur Trek:

  • Like most people trekking to this fort, the best part is to walk via lush green forests to reach this preserved treasure of ancient history.
  • The Bhaje Buddhist Caves are a piece of art and are worth exploring since they are on the way to the Summit. By climbing around 200 steps you can reach into these 22 rock-cut caves that date back to the 2nd century BC.
  • The remains of the old Mahadev Temple serve as a window into the rich history of the Maratha and how they worshipped Lord Shiva and followed his preaching.
  • There is a vast horse-driven flour mill with its grinding stone still in place reminding us of how many people lived in this kingdom indicating the amount of food required to be ground.
  • The magnificent Lohagad fort conquered by The Great Chhatrapati Maharaj Shivaji but was given during a treaty is a massive structure and can be visited via a small detour on the same path.
  • While climbing Visapur Trek one can see the Pawna Lake and Dam and upon reaching the top a beautiful view of the sun is all one needs to relax after this hectic trek. Availability of Food and Water: Since it is a small village fort there are simple Maharashtrian dishes like Misal Pav, Vada Pav, and Puri-Bhaji available only till Bhaje Village. After that, it is a mountainous trek and hence no food is available. There are no resources for water and hence you have to carry your own 2 Litre water bottle.

How to reach Visapur Fort:

The Fort located closest to Malvali station is easily accessible by train, road, and air. It is well connected to the Mumbai-Pune route and can be easily accessed via road as well.

  • By Rail : The closest railway station, Malvali is about 10 km from the fort and one can easily get autos to get to the fort from the station. There are daily trains from Pune, Lonavala, and Mumbai stations to reach Malvali. This is the easiest and safest way to reach the fort and is opted for by most trekkers. The nearest major train station is Lonavala and one can also travel from there.
  • By Road: Its proximity to the Mumbai-Pune highway makes it easily reachable from Paud via Kolvan and Dudhiware Khind. Those who want to enjoy a long drive on their two-wheelers or four-wheelers can also reach here via their vehicle which is an easy-to-find route. It takes about 1.5-2 hours to reach Visapur fort from Pune and 2-2.5 hours from Mumbai via major highways.
  • By Air: For trek enthusiasts willing to travel from different cities to this unique waterfall trek the nearest airport is Pune airport and you can hire a personal taxi or vehicle from Pune. 'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 5 'Mirrors' is a quality installment, but weighed down by another anchor of nostalgia

This entire episode was more than likely written for the sole reason that the sets from "Strange New Worlds" could be utilized.

And this week's throwback to "Discovery"-past to add to the season-long epilogue is to the Mirror Universe

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 5

The chase across the galaxy for the Progenitors MacGuffin continues, offering chances to insert stand-alone, episode-length adventures along the way. And this week's installment, entitled "Mirrors" features a brief and very random reminder that the Mirror Universe exists.

And that alone would've made an genuinely enthralling episode, but...Alex Kurtzman et al could not resist the temptation for an utterly pointless and thoroughly unnecessary throwback to the USS Enterprise. Honestly, these people have a serious problem, they should seek help.

To put all of this into context, the crew of the USS Discovery continue their pursuit of Malinne 'Moll' Ravel (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) and that chase leads them to er...well, you know, a giant, space-time swirly orifice that fills the viewscreen. Apparently, it's some sort of wormhole that's spectacularly unstable because of the constant matter/anti-matter reactions that are taking place at the opening. It's actually more than a little reminiscent of the inside of the V'ger spacecraft from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and that's just fine.

But it's what they find inside that grinds gears. Since the Discovery is too big to squeeze through the constantly opening and closing orifice, Capt. Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Book (David Ajala) take a shuttle through only to find...the ISS Enterprise. Yes, indeed, last seen (and only seen, actually) in the epic "The Original Series" episode "Mirror, Mirror" (S02, E04).

While beaming back to the USS Enterprise during an ion storm, Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and Uhura materialize aboard a almost-identical Enterprise in a parallel universe. Here, the United Federation of Planets has been replaced by the Terran Empire and its inhabitants are violent and cruel. Their only hope is to artificially reproduce the effects of the storm to facilitate a return to their own universe. (" I mperial S pace S hip replaces the traditional " U nited S pace S hip.")

And while the idea of finding a derelict, 900-year-old starship from the latter half of the 23rd century is a great idea, in the name of the Great Prophet Zarquon, why-oh-why did it have to be the Enterprise? There are — at least — 10 other Constitution Class starships that could've been potentially chosen and thus still allowing the updated sets from "Strange New Worlds" to have been used.

The USS Cayuga (NCC-1557), USS Constellation (NCC-1017), USS Defiant (NCC-1764), USS Excalibur (NCC-1664), USS Exeter (NCC-1672), USS Hood (NCC-1703), USS Intrepid (NCC-1631), USS Lexington (NCC-1709), USS New Jersey (NCC-1975) and the USS Potemkin (NCC-1657). And those are just the ones that are canon. Another new vessel could just as easily have been introduced as it's not unknown for Nu-Trek to bring brand new ships to the line.

And of course Burnham makes reference to the fact that her brother, Spock, served on this ship, which is probably another reason why the Enterprise was forced upon the writers. And according to some extremely rushed exposition, most of the crew escaped the weird wibblywobbly wormhole and went on to lead peaceful and productive lives — we assume somewhere not too far away given how long ago it happened and the current location in deep space — in a somewhat Space Seed scenario. Another interesting throwaway remark from Burnham was, "Crossing between universes has been impossible for centuries now," which shuts down that potential story avenue rather abruptly.

But let's also focus on why this episode could've been near-faultless if only someone could counsel Paramount showrunners on how to ween themselves off of nostalgia addiction. This week we get to see the whole Moll and L'ak backstory...and it's rather good and to add to that, Book and Moll confront the fact that they're distantly related. You know, because that makes things much more absurd orderly. (See how Burnham had to be related to Spock.)

The pacing of this episode, and with the exception of using the Enterprise, when any other Constitution Class starship could've worked — and served to expand the Mirror Universe a little bit — this is an enjoyable episode. It's a shame though that this is following the same cookie cutter seasonal storyline template by relying very much on a quest to follow while having standalone episode-long adventures to fill in the gaps, but hey, it can't be much worse than last season. So, there's that.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" and every other episode of every "Star Trek" show — with the exception of "Star Trek: Prodigy" — currently streams exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US, while "Prodigy" has found a new home on Netflix.

Internationally, the shows are available on  Paramount Plus  in Australia, Latin America, the UK and South Korea, as well as on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. They also stream on  Paramount Plus  in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In Canada, they air on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on Crave.

When Scott's application to the NASA astronaut training program was turned down, he was naturally upset...as any 6-year-old boy would be. He chose instead to write as much as he possibly could about science, technology and space exploration. He graduated from The University of Coventry and received his training on Fleet Street in London. He still hopes to be the first journalist in space.
