15 Best Things to Do in Bouillon (Belgium)

On its meandering course through the Ardennes the Semois River has carved out some of the most iconic landscapes in Belgium.

The views over the long loops at Bouillon, Frahan and Le Tombeau du Géant are timeless.

For many centuries the peninsulas created by the river were ideal for defence, good news for a city at an important strategic crossroads between Reims, Liège and Aachen.

The Castle of Bouillon on the rocky neck of Bouillon’s river loop has more than a millennium of history to tell, recalling the crusader and King of Jerusalem Godfrey of Bouillon, and adapted for 17th-century warfare by the French mastermind, Vauban.

1. Castle of Bouillon

There has been a fortification defending Bouillon’s ridge at the narrowest part of the peninsula since time immemorial.

The first mention of the Castle of Bouillon was in 988, but you can add a few hundred years to the age of the site, in chambers and tunnels hewn from the rock.

As we see it now, the castle is mostly the work of French military engineer Vauban during Louis XIV’s wars of expansion in the 17th and 18th century.

Visiting you’ll discover just how well the fortification could withstand sieges, with access to a water source and a sophisticated network of tunnels 30 metres deep bringing in food from the riverside.

There’s a warren of tunnels and passageways to investigate, beckoning you down to dungeons, chambers lined with antique weaponry and up to the scenic parapets.

2. Bouillon Belvedere

On the right bank, north of the meander you can either drive or hike up through the forest to reach an observation tower for a knockout view of the city.

You’ll see Bouillon and the castle hugged by the Semois, and can look into the distance over the wood-cloaked Ardennes.

The tower is more than 30 metres high, reaching a total elevation of 385 metres above sea level, and 180 metres over the river.

There are 161 steps to the upper platform, but you’ll forget about your exertions at the top.

It’s also interesting to remember that this upper lip of the valley was vital for communication in Medieval times, receiving signals from the north and west via the church towers on the plateau at Paliseul and Bertrix.

3. Musée Ducal

With a satisfying view across the Semois, the Ducal Museum is in a pair of listed buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The older of these is the Maison du Gouvernement Bouillonnais, a residence for officers of the castle.

Looking over another bend in the Semois you can marvel at one of the most treasured views in all of Belgium.

Le Tombeau du Géant can be seen from the north bank of the river outside the village of Botassart.

Here you’ll behold a wooded scene, with grassy meadows along the apex of the river loop and few signs of human habitation in any direction.

The name “Tombeau du Géant” (Tomb of the Giant) comes from the wooded ridge extending for 30 metres along the spine of the peninsula.

This has neat triangular contours resembling a coffin.

There are benches at the viewpoint and the scene is always extra special under a layer of typical Semois mist.

5. Archéoscope Godefroid de Bouillon

A descendant of Charlemagne, Godfrey of Bouillon (1060-1100) was Count of Boulogne and educated here in Bouillon by his uncle Godfrey IV (The Hunchback), Duke of Lower Lorraine and Lord of Bouillon.

When Godfrey IV died in 1076 his nephew inherited his titles.

He was one of the commanders of the First Crusade, and led the recapture of Jerusalem and the Holy Sepulchre, supposedly building a siege tower from ships’ timbers.

He became the first King of Jerusalem in 1099 and died in the Siege of Acre a year later.

In the old Convent of the Sépulcrines there’s a multimedia presentation and exhibition, about Godfrey of Bouillon, the First Crusade and the Ducal Castle.

Tickets for the Castle of Bouillon and the Musée Ducal will also be valid here.

6. Abbaye Clairefontaine

Follow the Semois downriver and in a few minutes you’ll arrive at a Cistercian monastery in a bucolic riverside setting.

Abbaye Clairefontaine, originally located near Arlon in Belgium and suppressed in the French Revolution, was re-founded in 1845 near Chartres and relocated to this spot in the 1930s.

The complex, designed by architect Henri Vaes, is a remarkable synthesis of modern and Gothic.

Vaes also designed Orval Abbey, another monastery dissolved in the late-18th century.

The church is open to the public, and you can take part in the Trappistine sisters’ prayer.

The cloisters leading to the church has lovely frescoes, and the church’s stained glass by the noted glassmakers Eugeen Yoors and Florent-Prosper Colpaert.

7. Point de Vue Frahan

If you can’t get enough of the Semois river’s beautiful, elongated meanders there’s another staggering viewpoint in the village of Rochehaut, looking south to the hamlet, Frahan.

This listed settlement is encircled by the river loop and then defended to the south by a wooded hill at the base of the loop.

In medieval times the hill was crested by a castle, Château de Montragut, traces of which are still visible.

You can survey the scene and its dramatic wooded backdrop through a coin-operated scope, picking out old tobacco dryers and little farms.

8. La Ferme des Fées

One look at the countryside around Bouillon and you’ll understand how the Semois Valley could inspire all sorts of legends and folklore.

This is a land of fairies, dryads, witches and elves, and you can get to know them at this twee attraction close by in Les Hayons.

The couple, Marie-Laure and Michel invite you into their workshop, inhabited by scores of hand-carved and painted 1/4 scale figurines.

The agricultural heritage of the Semois Valley is the subject of this museum a short drive away in Rochehaut.

Among the many scenes brought back to life are a dairy, the interior of a farmhouse and typical festivity in this region.

All of these spaces are furnished with original costume, tools, machines and appliances from the 19th and 20th century, most in working condition.

On the grounds is an animal park for domestic and wild species found in the Semois Valley, like Ardennes sheep, Belgian draft horses, Ardennaise roosters, Belgian blue cattle and mouflons.

10. Le Musée du Tabac de la Semois

Semois is a byword for the tobacco industry that cropped up along the river in the second half of the 19th century.

Thriving in the poor, acidic Ardennes soils, Semois tobacco is brown, with a highly distinct aroma caused by the valley’s damp climate and the unique way the tobacco is processed.

By 1910 there were 400 hectares devoted to tobacco, and more than nine million individual plants.

Production has since dwindled to just a few planters, but travelling through the valley you’re sure to see the old dryers, still standing in villages like Frahan.

If it’s an industry that you want to delve into, you can make the short trip to this atelier museum in Corbion.

This has implements dating from the early 1900s and still in working condition, and will guide you through the traditional stages of tobacco production, from seed to pipe.

At the heart of old Bouillon, the town’s parish church is a Neoclassical construction built in 1848 from sandstone, schist and limestone.

Up the slope to the east of the town there’s a zoological attraction laid out in hilly countryside.

Here, in wooded paddocks and enclosures, are more than 500 animals from a big diversity of species, among them zebras, tigers, wallabies, white lions, reindeer, pygmy goats, mandrills, llamas, ostriches, highland cattle, baboons, emus and capybaras.

You can see the park’s residents along a two-kilometre walking trail.

Especially for kids there’s a large adventure playground laid with soft woodchips and adapted to the hilly terrain.

The park’s restaurant comes with a relaxing outdoor terrace, for a meal, drink or sweet treat.

Although the Semois has gouged a spectacular valley through the Ardennes, the river itself is placid, especially during prolonged dry spells in the summer.

So even if you’re a kayaking newbie it’s worth paddling downriver to contemplate the valley and its verdant banks and deep wooded slopes.

A couple of rapids will inject some adrenaline into your voyage, but are more fun than daunting.

Semois Kayaks has a choice of itineraries, with two options departing the city: Bouillon to Poupehan-sur-Semois (roughly 3h30) and Bouillon to Frahan (around 5h). After you reach your destination, a free shuttle bus will be waiting to take you back to Bouillon.

A day-trip to Bouillon in the belgian Ardenne

Bouillon, this picturesque village in the belgian Ardennes, is a main tourist attraction in the area. It is famous for its beautiful and majestic castle overlooking the river. When spending a day in Bouillon, you can walk through its small alleys, visit the castle and its panoramic viewpoint, enjoy the river promenade of the Semois river and follow Godfrey of Bouillon all the way to Jerusalem.

With the city pass you can visit the three main tourist attractions. The pass costs 11€, includes the castle, the ducal museum as well as the Archéscope and can be purchased at any of these attractions.

You can start your visit at the huge car park behind the football fields only 5 minutes walking distance from the city. If you are travelling in a campervan, there are some free 24h places for campers so that you can spend the night without any problem.

Bouillon castle

The Bouillon castle is the biggest castle in Belgium and one of the most impressive in Europe. It was first mentioned in 988 but it was almost one hundred years later, in 1082, that Godefroy of Bouillon, the most famous Lord of Bouillon and leader of the first crusade, inherited the castle.

During the visit you will walk through its dark and humid alleys, path the citerns, tortue chamber and dungeons and climb all the way up to the 16th century Tour d’Autriche where you can enjoy the most breathtaking panorama over the village and the Semois river.

Several times per day, a Fauconnary show is taking place in the main courtyard. Don’t forget to look up the timetables when entering the castle in order to organise your visit accordingly.

At the entrance you can also buy a leaflet with further explanations on the castle. Even though this is a quite old-fashioned way to visit a place, we would still recommend to spend the 1,50 € extra because there are not many explanations inside the castle and it would be a pity to miss the citerns or dungeons because you simply don’t know they exist.

When leaving the castle, there is a huge arrow that shows you the way right to the ducal museum, the next place on the list. However, you can also take your time and follow the walking tour (see below) in order to discover the village on food. Don’t worry, the tour will lead you just in front of the museum situated in a house of the 18th century.

The museum is seperated in two different places and exposes a bit of everything: paintings of the belgian painter Albert Raty, several objects from the everyday life in the city, a room fully dedicated to Godefroy of Bouillon with a model of the castle and last but not least a room dedicated to the famous ironwork of Bouillon, which was once the main economy of the city.

After this diverse range of historic objects, you can continue your walk down to the river, cross the bridge and walk to the Maison du Tourisme (House of Tourism). On its first floor, you can discover the next and last attraction for the day, the Archeoscope Godefroy of Bouillon.

Archeoscope

This is where you will learn the story of Godefroy of Bouillon, this French nobleman who inherited the Bouillon castle in 1082 before selling it to the bishop of Liège in 1095 in order to lead the first crusade all the way to Jerusalem where he refused to be crowned king but accepted to be become ruler. Godefroy of Bouillon died in 1100 when his younger brother Baldwin I of Jerusalem was crowned king.

The visit consists of a video show with some special effects. Headsets with different translations are available (French, Dutch, English). After the show, an exposition of the Crusades from an islamic point of view complete the visit.

Walking tour

The city also provides you with a map for a self-guided walking tour. Every here and there you get some interesting facts and figures of the different places to see.

The tour gives you a great overview of the city which is much more than just the attractions I have cited before. Enjoy a walk along the Semois river, discover the narrow alleys and buy some groceries in the local shops in the city center.

Château de Bouillon

Top choice in The Ardennes

Slouching like a great grey dragon high on Bouillon's central rocky ridge, Belgium’s finest feudal castle-ruin harks back to AD 988, but it's especially associated with Crusader knight Godefroid de Bouillon , the first 'Belgian' ruler of Jerusalem. The super-atmospheric site has everything you might wish for in a castle: dank dripping tunnel passages, musty half-lit cell rooms, falconry displays, rough-hewn stairwells and many an eerie nook and cranny to discover. Plus there are off-beat surprises like maturing cheeses and a caligraphy mini-museum.

Audio guides (€2.50) or guidebooks (€1.50) offer extra historical background in four languages. Access is across crag-spanning stone bridges from the car park at the castle's upper northeastern tip. Between March and October, time your visit to include the 45-minute open-air bird shows (11.30am, 2pm and 3.30pm; no extra charge), when trained ‘wig-snatching’ owls, hawks and eagles swoop low over spectators’ heads. In July and August there's an extra 5pm show. To really get the heebie-jeebies prebook a night-time torchlight tour (adult/child/torch hire €10/7/2.50, 10pm Wednesday to Sunday in July and August).

Travel to Bouillon

Getting to Bouillon is easy, as the town is located just off of the E25 motorway.The closest trainstation near Bouillon is located in Libramont. From there, bus line 8 will bring you to Bouillon in 45mins.

A brief history of Bouillon

Bouillon is a historical town located in the Wallonia Region of southeastern Belgium, nestled on the Semois River in the Ardennes. It has a rich and intriguing past dating back to the Middle Ages when it was a lordship within the Duchy of Lower Lorraine, serving as the primary seat of the Ardennes-Bouillon dynasty in the 10th century. Bouillon became famous for its ducal title, which was connected to the town.

In the 11th century, Bouillon was held by the counts of Ardennes, who were invested by the German kings with the dukedom of Lower Lorraine. Because Bouillon was their primary stronghold, they were often referred to as the dukes of Bouillon, although Bouillon was not yet a duchy at that time. The town was later acquired by the bishopric of Liège in 1096, and the bishops subsequently styled themselves as dukes of Bouillon.

In 1482, Bouillon was received by Guillaume de La Marck. Despite Liège taking it back twice during the following century, Bouillon eventually became a formal dukedom, which passed down by marriage to Henri de La Tour d’Auvergne in 1591. The duchy remained in this line until 1794 when Bouillon declared itself a republic, ultimately being annexed by France the following year. Following the Napoleonic Wars in 1815, the duchy was incorporated into the newly established Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Subsequently, when Belgium was formed in the 1830s, Bouillon became part of it.

This castle is a must-visit for history buffs, as it dates back to 988 and offers a taste of the medieval history of the region.

To reach this marvelous piece of architecture, you’ll have to hike up the ridge through the small town streets. Once you’ve entered, you’ll make your way through a drawbridge and explore the interior of the castle and its fascinating history. Don’t forget to head down to the basement where you can still take a peek at the former dungeons and torture chamber. You can finish off your visit with a panoramic view over the gardens from the 16th-century tower.

The Bouillon Belvedère

Are you looking for a scenic hiking experience and a breathtaking view of the city? Look no further than the Bouillon Belvédère. This lookout tower stands at a height of 385 meters and offers multiple levels from which to admire the picturesque town below. The hike to the Belvédère starts at the Pont de Cordemoy, where you’ll follow hiking trail number 7. The trail is steep and winds through the forest for about 30 minutes before reaching the bottom of the tower. Be prepared for a workout as you’ll need to conquer a total of 161 stairs.

If you’re unable to hike the trail, it is possible to reach the Belvédère by car. However, be aware that the road leading up to it is rough and rocky and may potentially damage your vehicle. For a truly unforgettable experience and to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the area, it is highly recommended to hike the trail.

Visit the Giant’s Tomb (Le tombeau du géant)

Le Tombeau du Géant, or the Giant’s Tomb, is a must-see destination for those visiting the picturesque village of Botassart near Bouillon. This panoramic lookout point offers stunning views over one of the meanders of the Semois river and is steeped in legend and history. The name originates from a local Gallic hero who, according to legend, was so tall and strong that he threw himself off the cliffs of Rocher des Gattes rather than be captured by Roman soldiers.

To reach Le Tombeau du Géant, you can drive from Bouillon in about 15 minutes. There are free parking spots available, but they can be crowded during peak season. Motorhomes are permitted to park during the day, but overnight parking is not allowed. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Bouillon to Botassart, and then walk for 20 minutes to the lookout point.

For a more active option, consider taking a medium hike from Bouillon to Le Tombeau du Géant. The total distance of the hike is around 13km and offers the chance to experience the natural beauty of the area.

11 must do’s when in Bouillon

Bouillon is one of the most beautiful cities in the Ardennes and is of course known for the medieval castle that glitters above the city. Bouillon, you may know it from the famous knight ‘Godfrey of Bouillon’ as well. Here are my must do’s when visiting the city.

1)  Castle of bouillon

Perched on a massive rock, the Castle dominates the town as the eye-catcher of Bouillon. It is the oldest establishment in Belgium. This castle takes you back in time. It includes a throne room, torture chambers, and forgetting pits. But don’t forget to climb the towers for a beautiful view of the city.

Godfrey of Bouillon

Most know the city from ‘Godfrey of Bouillon’. The famous knight Godfrey inherited from an uncle the principality of Bouillon and the margraviate of Antwerp. Since then, he has been inextricably linked to the Castle. He got the title of Duke after helping the German emperor. He sold his duchy to the Prince-Bishops of Liège to pay for his expedition to the Holy Land (first crusade). Today you can still see the statue of the legendary knight against one of the castle walls. A beautiful tribute to this legendary knight.

Attend the bird show

Thanks to the Falconer you can enjoy an enchanting spectacle where various owls, eagles, buzzards, vultures, and of course falcons come to you. Performances take place at 11:30 am, 2:00 pm, and 3:30 pm.

2) Bouillon belvédère

Belvédère de Bouillon is the place to be to enjoy a magnificent view over the city. This location used to be a signaling place in old times to get signals from the north and west of the city.

3)  Le tombeau du geant

The Graf van de Reus (Tombeau du Géant) is a beautiful nature walk near Bouillon. You can do the 5km or 13km walk! 

4) Museum Ducal

This museum is housed in two buildings from the 18th century and is located near the castle of Bouillon. The museum houses a beautiful collection of Islamic and Medieval art. You can also admire a copy of the tomb of Godfrey as well as the souvenirs of the Crusades such as weapons and religious objects from that period.

5) Archéoscope Godefroid de Bouillon

The Archéoscope Godefroid de Bouillon takes you in the footsteps of the Crusaders with an impressive performance. The spectacular course uses state-of-the-art technology and lets you relive the First Crusade in the footsteps of Duke Godfrey and thousands of other warriors on their way to Jerusalem.

6) Stroll through the Breton quarter

This quarter, also known as the “quartier du Brutz”, is today seen as the heart of the old town. The district is gradually being restored and is now one of the oldest and most diverse in the city.

7) Bouillon Brewery

If you are a real beer lover, you should pay a visit to the charming brewery of Bouillon. You can enjoy a blond beer, the Cuvée de Bouillon and an amber beer, La Médiévale. Would you rather have a seasonal beer? That is also possible!

8) Pont de Liège

Walk across the Bridge of Liège (Pont de Liège), the oldest bridge in the Semois and also the first building over the river. In 1069 it was a wooden bridge that served the traffic between Germany and France. The charm of this bridge was increased in 1939 by the placement of two impressive statues on the right bank. One is in memory of the famous knight Godfrey of Bouillon and the other is dedicated to St Arnoldus.

9) Pont de Cordemois

Another important bridge is the Pont des Cordemois. An ideal stop for a cozy picnic. You can see this bridge from one of the towers of the Castle of Bouillon.

10) La Passerelle du Moulin de l’Epine

La Passerelle du Moulin de l’Epine is a unique suspension bridge hidden in the green forests of Bouillon. The bridge is no less than 55 meters long and dangles above the Semois. 

11) Canoeing or kayaking on the Semois

Go canoeing or kayaking on the Semois! The great thing about this activity is that anyone can do it. Ideal for a fun day trip with the entire family or friends group!

Bouillon is a small town located on the southern edge of the province of Luxembourg in the Wallonia region in Belgium . The Semois river cut out the beautiful valley in which the town was built. The town is located merely 2 kilometers from the border with France .

In the past Bouillon functioned as a lordship within the Duchy of Lower Lorraine and the principal seat of the Ardennes-Bouillon dynasty.

By public transport [ edit ].

Bouillon does not have a train station. The closest train station is in Libramont . Line #8 of the TEC company has the most frequent connection between the train station of Libramont and the town of Bouillon. It is advised to check the schedule in advance, since the schedule is rather infrequent.

By car [ edit ]

A private car is the best way to visit the Bouillon area since public transport is sparse here. Bouillon is crossed by the European road E46, which leads to Sedan (in France the road is labeled N58). A crossroads located a few kilometers to the south of the town allows you to take the N83 towards Arlon and Luxembourg. The European route E46 also provides access from Dinant and Namur (via the N95 national road) as well as Libramont and the E411 motorway. Finally, the N810, to the west of the city, leads to the Semois valley.

The historical centre of Bouillon is very small and easily covered on foot, though there may be some steep inclines.
